Reviews (page 3 of 8)
Whoa, this was super cool! I loved all of the unique combos of tempo and phrasing, the vocal harmonies were amazing, and even the guitar parts that had tones which kind of pierced my ears found a way to sit in the mix as a whole in a way that I enjoyed. New to me, but great stuff!
Great album, but I was already a fan. I love the guitarwork, the weird time signature changes, dude's wacky voice, and all the melodic vocal layering. I think I prefer Swing Lo Magellan, but only slightly. 4.25/5
This album is unclassifiable. It is known for breaking out of what people thought of as indie. The experimental nature of this album, especially in terms of vocal arrangement, time signature changes, and instrumentation, make this a challenging but rewarding listen. While I understand why people are put off by this record, it certainly takes a very unique approach and synthesizes a lot of music into one strange whole. Though this album often seems meandering and mostly concerned with making noise, there are moments of beauty and melody throughout that make it worth the listen.
A nice indie rock album, creative songwriting. Although there are many similar things like this from the last 10-15 years, I'm not sure how they pick one.
I am pleasantly surprised by how good an album by a band I’ve never heard of is. It feels original, unique, experimental, and fun, but, for some reason that I can’t explain, fails to excite me. There is no spark to it, at least not for me. Not to say I don’t like it. I really enjoyed it and hope to hear it again, but I may not remember it is all. 4/5
Pretty good. I never heard them before, at least not consciously - But this is a decent album. Its not AMAZING or anything, but its pretty good. 4/5
👍
Fíla þetta vel.
There’s a lot going on on this record musically. It makes me think a little bit of The Flaming Lips meets Elvis Costello.
Experimental yet cohesive and polished. It's something of a marvel, really, in that it defies characterization. Other than to say it's an all around joy, and better than awesome.
"Bitte Orca" by Dirty Projectors is a mind-bending journey through indie rock's most innovative corners. Released in 2009, it's a striking blend of intricate harmonies, unconventional song structures, and David Longstreth's unique falsetto. Tracks like "Stillness Is the Move" and "Cannibal Resource" showcase the band's genre-defying approach. The album's production is a sonic kaleidoscope, with layers of instruments and voices colliding in beautiful chaos. While its experimental nature might not be for everyone, "Bitte Orca" is a testament to Dirty Projectors' fearless creativity and their ability to push the boundaries of what indie rock can be. It's a challenging yet rewarding listen that continues to intrigue and inspire.
4.0 + This isn’t a “chill vibes” kind of record - you’ll need to give it some attention. You’ll likely spend the first half feeling like the rug is constantly being pulled out from under you. “Oh, this is pretty. I get this,” you’ll think. Then, boom - the song turns into something entirely different. It gets annoying. But then you get 2 songs in the middle - “Stillness is the Move” and “Two Doves” - that actually settle into their groove, and that’s about as stable as the record gets before things go topsy-turvy again. There are sublime moments, such as the dueling female call-and-response chirps on “Remade Horizon”, or the fluttery African-sounding guitar licks on “No Intention.” This is a restless, uncompromising record that squirms in and out of colors and moods and refuses to be pinned down.
4/5. Very funky and danceable, the end of the album does feel like b-sides of the first side. Definitely just sounds like slower versions of the better songs. Falls off but still the first few songs are bangers.
Have really enjoyed this album over the years, probably their best and most accessible record, I'm going to enjoy revisiting this one!
Like an amalgamation of bands I like, and delightfully weird in places
I enjoyed the inventive harmonies and complexity of the compositions. Will seek in the future.
I am going to lean into this one and say it was great and unique and I enjoyed it. The female vocalizations were odd but mostly worked.
How else can I describe this album other than overwhelming? Not in the same way that shoegaze can be, but more so due to this albums lack of focus or any sense of normal song structure? Lots of random things thrown into the songs to make it feel less like a natural progression and instead something where you're jumping up, down, and all around. This can be a negative on the album, with it being pretty poor listening music at points, but it can also make the album stick out, especially compared to other pop of the late 00s. It, at points, reminds me of a Vampire Weekend jam session, and that is both a blessing and a curse. I think that when I give this album a four, it doesn't necessarily mean I think it is on equal standing with some of my other ratings, but rather does enough to stand out and have bright moments that the oddities of the album don't bring it down too much. I do, however, totally understand the relatively low average score. I struggle to put into words how I feel about this, but despite my middling review, I did enjoy this, and that's what matters here, I suppose.
Liked a lot
Interesting choice from the dirty projectors, 3.5
This is something I would not normally choose to listen to but I was pleasantly surprised and found it weird but enjoyable and calming to listen to
First time listener. This is really interesting. Hard to describe. Like a mixture of Vampire Weekend and Maps & Atlases. Catchy and familiar but also weird and almost experimental. Very cool stuff. 7/10
Some very interesting rhythms and harmonies throughout. I'll probably need to give it another listen to see if it sticks more the second time. Definitely a good listen.
Almost! Good!
Never listened to this album full through. Very much a time capsule of that late aughts early 2010s vibe. Two doves was my favorite.
Experimental rock? I don't really think so per se, Indie rock trying hard to be different with some odd chords and tempo changes is more likely. In spite of that there's some good music on this album and I'll go back this album for sure. It's a 3.5 but perhaps over time I might think more of it.
I really like some of what is being done on here. But some of it doesn't quite click with me either. It's a good album though and I do think you should listen to it.
First, the music surprised me since the cover doesn't match with the sound IMHO. As for the sound, it's pretty odd - sometimes it sounds like Andrew Bird, sometimes like crazy 60s cult. Anyway, that was interesting experience!
A pleasant indie work. Loved the colors and textures. Loved the harmonies and musical progressions. Definitely will listen to it again.
Pretty meta, saved a bunch
Really interesting sound and not at all what I expected to see on here. Don't know if I would go back to this but their sound is definitely unique. Cool instrumentals. I wonder how these songs are performed live. Fave track(s): Stillness Is The Move, Useful Chamber, Remade Horizon
this album is indie af and fits the time. good timing and guitar solos. maybe too clean at times, maybe too sweet at times. its good tho. its real good. love me some acappella vocals that lead to wild guitar solos and symphonic and anthemic head banger moments. kicks. hard.
What an absolutely uncompromising album. By no way a clean and easy listen but it’s overflowing with complexity, ideas on the verge of collapsing under their own pretentiousness (a few exceptions actually falls flat) and creativity. Dirty Projectors are fighting to keep their avant-garde thoughts inside the framework of ordinary pop structures - and somehow they manage to get away with it. One of the few exceptions is the middle break of “Useful Chamber”, which consists of a weird beat and misplaced spoken words. The rest of the song is just explosive. This really had a hold on me from start till finish even though I never fully knew where I was about to be taken to next.
4.6/5 Such a great album - the vocal stylings of the three leads are incredibly original and match arrangements that are fun and hard to predict. My favorite DP album, for sure
Interesting, spacey, pretty and nice
HL: Useful Chamber, Stillness is the Move There were moments where the album’s frequently-changing nature almost lost me. Overall though this was a great listen. September 2, 2022
Good album, weird riffs that were fun to listen to
Surprisingly fun and delightfully eclectic. Good for another listen someday
I was worried that this would be too cutesy-fartsy for my taste. While it did occasionally veer into cutesy-fartsy territory, it had enough substance that kept it really interesting and not annoying at all to me. I plan to listen to this again and explore more of their music. 4 stars.
If there's a such thing as progressive indie, it's this. I was pleasantly surprised! Every song interested me because they were constantly surprising me by changing in ways I didn't expect. It was very impressive and felt very creative and fresh. This one could definitely grow on me more, I will return
I was way into this kinda stuff in college. The name of the band and the album cover are very familiar to me. Listening to it, I don't believe I have heard it before. It takes me back to '09 for sure. It feels sort of dated in a "very much a product of time/place" sort of way, but I still really enjoy it. Unique vocal stylings. You know what? Bitte Orca IS fun to say!
Super original futuristic retro sound, already a modern classic. 7/10
Was very very decent. May need to relisten again very soon.
7/16/2022 - ALBUM #170 https://open.spotify.com/album/2Geg4mwE8z9DO5BSSUoMKz?si=36887e03a2324980 Today's Album: "Bitte Orca" by Dirty Projectors - This is an album very unlike most albums I have heard before, and it is for the very best reasons. The opening song, Cannibal Resource, introudces the listener to everything that makes this album great, from the thoughtful lyrics, to the jangly and echoey guitar effects, to the tight drums and bass, and of course the fantastic female vocal harmonies. This album somehow captures a very youthful spirit to it while maintaining a pretty rocking core to it’s overall indie sound. The production of this album is pretty great, if not maybe a tad sterilized and clean, but that is pretty easily forgiven given when it came out. I really appreciate some of the odd rhythms this band uses in the verse structure and melodies of these songs. It reminds me to some of Bob Dylan’s experimental songwriting techniques if they were revamped for a modern, slightly more hipster, audience. The song Temecula Sunrise is a beautiful example of this with some incredibly jarring and unsteadying rhythmic changes that somehow sound beautiful in their janky, offcenteredness. I think part of this warmth and cheeriness to their sound comes from a fairly melodic bass guitar and what sounds like an incredibly skilled drummer when it comes to timing. There are of course other factors to this like the bright guitar sounds and beautiful harmonies, but the rhythm section of thi band really strikes me as what is keeping the core of the sound together. I also think this album flows together pretty nicely and it feels like one of those projects where the songwriters are very tuned into how the record should flow as a musical journey, which is something that I appreciate. I do think there are moments where the scattered and syncopated rhythms become a bit samey throughout the tracklist, but I also think there are a ton of interesting risks being taken to change up that sound, like on the track Stillness Is The Move. This song also shifts the background female vocalists to the foreground and drops the usual main male vocalist and I think this really helps to diversify the vocal feel of the record. Overall, this is an incredibly creative and colorful rock album that no-doubt inspired countless indie musicians for years to come (let alone most modern female vocalists!). Give this one a listen if you like indie music with a fair dose of quirkiness to it and enjoy a lot of interesting auxiliary instrumentation. Super fun! Highlights: Cannibal Resource, Temecula Sunrise, The Bride, Useful Chamber, Remade Horizon, Fluorescent Half Dome Score: 8/10 One of the most sonically adventurous indie albums I have heard
Well this was a splendid surprise. Had not heard of the band before. The album contains plenty of thrills. The harmonies complement the lead so well. Plus the album manages to extend time. It appeared much longer than reported timing. Maybe those odd time signatures did the trick.
While songs lack depth and substance - sonically and melodically it’s a quite interesting and varied album.
A new band for me. Really enjoyed this album. Got an Arcade Fire vibe about it.
Another casualty of my “I wasn’t paying attention to ‘mainstream indie rock’ at this time that I definitely would’ve liked” era
4/5. Pretty experimental/out there indie. Lots of cool highlights 🤙
Un disco con popurrí de canciones, parecen inconexas. Pero las canciones están bien. Folk, africano, inde, Rufus... popurrí. 4
Euphoric Pop. Great Production.
Too much for me, but great rhythm
Reminds me of Tune Yards and Vampire Weekend in parts, that sort of 'New York, we all went to music college' indie. That said its got some really interesting bits particularly vocals wise and the album flowed nicely. Probs a 3.5 but will round up
Rating: 7/10 Best songs: No intention, Remade horizon
Somewhere in the early 2010's, a "facts" page in Facebook once boasted: Japanese scientists have created an MRI machine that can record your dreams and reconstruct them for you to watch while you're awake. And that made me think: considering the illogical and very, very weird stuffs that we see, do, and experience in our sleep-worlds, what could we watch if such MRI machine exists. And more importantly, how will we REACT? But apart from images, our brains actually created SOUNDS too. And of course, the sounds isn't any less weird. A lot of people are probably aware of those non-existent symphonies and synths and voices screaming random words like opera singers. I experience such music when I am about to sleep or about to wake up. And thinking about the fact that my skills in music stuff is zero, I guess that EVERYONE'S brain creates unique music too. My point is, what if instead of recording what we see in our dreams, we record what we HEAR in our dreams? What would we hear? Well, in 2009, some people who call themselves "Dirty Projectors" made a pretty convincing impression of those weird dream-music. They called this album "Bitte Orca". Please killer whale. And hearing those while awake? Weird. Weird. And weird. And perhaps I would have the same reaction if I saw my dreams in that MRI machine. I would see all the eccentric adventures and the illogical stuffs in it. I would find it weird. And this is how I describe "Bitte Orca". Surreal lyrics, unpredictable sounds, and tense yet fun overall atmosphere. It's dream music (no, not the Minecraft YouTuber). It reminds me why I love dreaming. It is where we temporarily throw logic and rules aside, and just have fun and face the chaos and surprises of human imagination.
A defining sound of the late 00s, much like Vampire Weekend, Acade Fire etc
What is this? And how can I get slightly more but not a lot more than this?
Lots of melodic and rhythmic unpredictability on this one. Interesting vocals and instrumentation, too. Sometimes it's really interesting and fun and sometimes it's hard work to listen. I loved Cannibal Resource, particularly the backing vocals and the guitar in the instrumental section mid-song. I loved Stillness is the Move, including the title (this is a band that likes a juxtaposition I think). Two Doves sounds like contemporary musical theater (that's a compliment coming from me) and contains the line, "But our bed is like a failure." And Remade Horizon is really great, again with the hooty backing vocals that I find so charming. Most of the rest didn't really work for me. Temecula Sunrise has extremely pedestrian, extremely depressing lyrics. ("Definitely you can come and live with us. I know there's a space for you in the basement, yeah. All you gotta do is help out with the chores and dishes." Poetic in its banality? Actually, kind of yes.) In The Bride, the handclaps after the line, "no one has any good reason to live," were...surprising. I'm giving this one a 4 because the songs I love, I really love, and I am giving them each a star.
The first album and group that was completely new to me on this list. I enjoyed it as something fresh and different.
Didn't like temecula sunrise, but the rest of the album turned it around for me.
Flaps around more than an erotic bat, yet somehow appealing. Most songs went places unexpectedly, which I like. One song in particular had off-key singing, was not a fan
I've heard of the Dirty Projectors, but I wasn't sure if I've heard any of their music. I've probably heard at least one of their Tiny Desk Concerts. I wasn't sure if "Stillness Is the Move" was a track I've heard before, or if some of the sounds used on the record just remind me of other music. Most of the album felt that way - new music to me but with hints of sounds I've heard before. This isn't bad. The album was put together in a way that I think that it qualifies as a potential re-listen of the whole album.
Chaotic eclectic sporadic fun. Build ups followed by sudden drops. Smooth guitar work interrupted perfectly by the crash of a cymbal then followed by intentional offbeat drum solos and it all works. Wonderfully unintelligible cannons and echos and dynamic duets between two strong vocalists. Bold new sound seems right here and I will definitely seek them out for more like this. Very unique sound. Cannibal resource, Temecula sunrise, remade horizons, stillness is the move
Good indie music
Funky style, I really enjoyed it.
Truly a first listen for me, probably my first album on the list that I really didn't have much context on. Like, heard of the band before, had some sort of indie rock context, but that's it. And, I'm liking it - a good surprise. Not sure how much I'll want to stick with it over time, but I could see it growing on me (the way Of Montreal's "Hissing Fauna.." did, or could see it getting old. But, for now, I like the layered vocals, the mix of soft and hard, the general feel of orchestration to the whole thing.
а ниче прикольно так
This really captures a particular area of indie pop for me. I've heard it before and will listen again.
even the most accessible dirty projectors is probably fairly niche. regardless, i think i probably love this album. i love the weird time shit he does.
Surprisingly good album from a band I've never heard of!
Klinkt als wat ik al luister. Leuke rock :)
"I think you're more than a terrified witness Behind the arbitrary line" (Cannibal resource) "On top of every mountain There was a great longing For another even higher mountain In each city longing for a bigger city" (Stillness is the move) Pues bastante bien, me gustan mucho las letras y el arte es muy bonito.
Experimental music can be very very good or can miss the mark completely. This is the former. Reminiscent in places of a Zaireeka-era Flaming Lips and a more polished Deerhoof, which is very much my jam. I'd never heard of Dirty Projectors before, but enjoyed this enough to want to check out more of their back catalogue. If it is as good as this, I will be in for a treat, but suspect 'hit and miss' may go with the genre... 4/5.
Un disco con popurrí de canciones, parecen inconexas. Pero las canciones están bien. Folk, africano, inde, Rufus... popurrí.
Wonderfully quirky and inventive. I think The Dirty Projectors and Grizzly Bear were two of the best indie acts of the early 2000s. Like any offbeat and complex works it’ll take a few lessons to grow on me but then it’s gonna stick for a long time, unlike the formulaic pop on mainstream radio
Great album, always fun to listen to this unique band.
Very chill and soothing. Not an every day listen.
didn’t really need to be on this list but cool. liked it more when listened twice.
REALLY COOL MAN
Very into this. Cool indie vibe with catchy melodies and pretty vocals.
Another great album from an indie rock band I didn't know. Keep them coming!!
Excellent album by Dirty Projectors. Some people say the vocals are like soap, but I love this dude, and the abstract sounds they're putting out.
Very cool freak folk record
Some quirky unpredictable tunes but wasn’t mega fond from the first listen
I kept trying to like this album but most of the times that I was close to getting into it something would happen and I was turned off. But there was a few times where it all clicked and it was great. 5/10
Interesting enough. Some fun bits.
Before today, had two songs liked: stillness is the move and no intention. As I remember it, this album is never quite fun enough or interesting enough, but it tries to be both and ends up unsatisfying on both counts.
Kind of impossible to describe, but I enjoy it. The album crams in so many ideas and moves in so many directions that it should be annoying, but instead becomes fascinating. “Stillness” is the best track, certainly, but especially the first half has compelling moments. Yet this is something I would not ordinarily select for my listening, so I can’t honestly rate it that highly.
It takes a little time to grow into itself, but it became pretty enjoyable as it went along. Not something I'll probably revisit, but interesting enough.
Have I listened to this album before No How familiar am I with this album Unfamiliar How do I feel about this artist? I don’t know them at all Pre-Listen Thoughts: I’m guessing this is gonna be a little experimental Favorite track(s): Cannibal Resources Post-Listen Thoughts: Interesting, not my favorite but OK
Not the sound I was expecting, the album set reminded me of something else I guess. Sounded familiar, as in I think a few other bands that came a little later have a similar but improved upon sound
Super catchy and a little wild
instead of "potential saviors of rock and roll" today we get "pretentious indie classics loved by pitchfork". but in general im so confused. i dont know what a score shall i give to this. maybe a 3?
I groaned when I saw this was my album for the day because I was definitely hitting up Stereogum on the daily in 2009 for my music news. I had memories of not liking Dirty Projectors and I was ready to hit the 1-star button. I listened all the way through again and I've softened my stance a little bit after almost 20 years. I think at the time there was a lot of music covering some of the same ground that probably made me less receptive. There was Animal Collective, Tune Yards, Grizzly Bear and Dirty Projectors all putting out music but now in 2026 I can conveniently forget all of the minorly overlapping elements. 'Stillness is The Move' is definitely the standout track for me. If there is anything worth hearing or remembering about this album it would be that one. There are interesting parts in a lot of the songs I just think maybe they needed to be worked over more. We're far enough away from 2009 that I feel like there are tropes and recording sins of that era that make me cringe now. It's kind of like when you hear a song from like 1987 that has super gated snares and chimes that could otherwise be pretty great. I don't know if this would go on my own 1001 list but I do feel like I need to go back through their albums and see if I missed anything I would like.
Yeah it’s weird. Weird is cool. This is fine
Better than Coldplay
Quirky, progressive indie pop. Interesting and occasionally moving, but ultimately a bit too intentionally odd for me.
IDK I kinda like the whimsy!
Hadde likt dette mye bedre hvis det ikke var for han kisen som synger.
I only listened to half of it. It was fresh and fun and the musicality was interesting.
No Intention was a pretty sweet song. The rest was fine, but nothing really stuck with me.
Grabs your attention but too clever for its own good by Stillness. Really a 2.5 but I'll bump up due to its newness to me.
Eyuugh
It reminded me a bit of foster the people. But it went off the rails really fast. I don't know if I like it or dislike it. An interesting album nonetheless
Had never heard of this until today and I quite enjoyed it. Nothing groundbreaking but it did contain some interesting parts. I will have to give it a few more listens I think, it’s one of those albums that’s hard to rate with just one listen
I enjoyed this overall, though the female-led songs were generally stronger (and I understand that this is largely one man's project with a revolving cast of band members). Maybe a bit Pitchfork-y but overall I enjoyed it.
Wie Tropical Fuck Storm ohne das "Fuck". Also weniger wuchtig, aber mindestens genau so schräg. Hat mich stellenweise ganz gut unterhalten.
Definitely a creatively strong and opinionated album, which I appreciate. Not really my cup of tea.
6/10
I really didn’t want to like this but oddly I did.
Caught between two states my friends will not recognise in me: honesty and generosity. I'm going to plump for generosity in that the creativity here isn't completely alienating and there's enough of interest that I might give it another spin. 3*
This is an interesting art rock/indie hipster album that kind of reminds me of Grizzly Bear with female singers. Fine in its own way, very angular, but without much in the way of hooks or melodic sensibility. I really like "Stillness is the Move" and the female singers contributions but, overall, found the whole thing kind of lackluster. And it definitely dies not deserve to be on this list.
There are a lot of albums on this list, and this is definitely one of them, that feel silly to give a simple star rating. I appreciate how brimming with ideas it is, and that sometimes leads to great results like on Stillness is the Move. Other times songs go on way too long for my taste and feel like a botched experiment. Definitely appreciated more than enjoyed this one
Having flashbacks to this being played everywhere I went back in college... Nonstop hipster praise. Honestly, wasn't as bad as I had remembered.
Surprised this one passed me by as I am the perfect age to have fucked with this first time around
Weirdo pop music. Abrasive in an unconventional way. It's not noisy or distorted or anything, but the way vocals blend with each other makes them sound very sharp. But that's about the only bad thing I can about it. It's a very creative record, with very interesting and unusual songwriting that never gets dull. It's definitely an album of its time (the late-00's), but that was a better time, at least for me. Key tracks: Temencula Sunrise Stillness in the Move Two Doves
Počúvateľné, ale vzťah sme si nezískali...
Some really cool arrangements and syncopations on this one. Not what I was expecting, but really enjoyed it. Highlights: "Stillness is the Move" and "Two Doves"
Indie nonsense. Like if Vampire Weekend couldn't write a beat.
Hearing this within two days of a pod of Orcas off the Northumberland coast is surely kismet. I thought i remembered Dirty Projectors music and not in a positive way. I was wrong however and actually enjoyed this. It’s nothing special but a good solid album.
I knew absolutely nothing about the album or the artist going into this. This was an extremely odd album, but I found something about it weirdly engaging. Some of the rhythms felt a bit traditional African in places, despite nothing else on the record fitting into that category - I was reminded of Ladysmith Black Mambazo a lot. I liked the female vocals generally more than the male, but I was pretty good with all of it. Also, so many handclaps. I like handclaps. This is getting a surprising: 3/5
Hadn't heard this one before, but I found it pretty catchy and creative. "Stillness is the Move" was a standout track.
Weird, but entertaining!
nice enough
Never heard of this band at all. This is the best thing about doing this list, encountering things I would have never come across otherwise. This wasn’t bad. Quirky, somewhat innovative, and always striving to be original. Like many such albums on this list, it started to grate towards the end. Wouldn’t revisit, but was good for what it was.
I liked the first part of the album, with its irregular, ethereal rhythms & instrumentals, but the album lost my attention in the 2nd part
Nouveau… peut-être 2 ou 3 écoutes nécessaires
This album is so bizarre, but it definitely held my interest. I thought it was strange and unique and I didn't skip through any of the songs like I thought I would. I’m so confused by it though. I can’t tell if I love it or hate it.
Some interesting beats on this album and the vocals worked well with the slower, soft tempo of the tracks. These songs kinda faded into the background while I was working and listening at the same time. There wasn’t much that grabbed my attention, but when I was engaged it was fine.
Different for certain, definately not boring. I don't understand what they are doing, or why, but I don't object. Songs are grounded by familiar elements but then the band goes nuts with all sorts of outrageous sounds and harmonies that transform the songs into something quite different. Pretty impressive and cool. I'm not entirely sure...but I think I liked it.
Was alright, quite liked it.
I was really into Stillness Is The Move when it came out, but didn't really get into the rest of the album. I haven't listened to this in many years, and while I have a better appreciation for this work, the album as a whole isn't a favorite.
Nice little album
This one's alright. From the looks of things, 2009 wasn't the best year for albums considering this is the last one I have for the project and none of them have been masterpieces. The closest one got for me was Merriweather Post Pavilion, which was great, but not quite excellent. Is this Dirty Projectors album close to being that good? No. Not really. It's not bad at all, but it's not on that level. This album's kinda weird in some ways, but in a way that I think is kinda good? It's not in a bad way, that's for sure. The album's production feels modern, but it's got this... fragmented style or something like that? It's on the quirkier side of albums. The vocals aren't my favorite, but they're not always bad. You've got some neat experiments here. "Stillness is the Move" is pretty solid. I could see someone really digging this, but I could also see someone else not caring for it at all. I'm in the middle. I respect this album quite a bit, though I can't see myself listening to it or any of its songs much in the future. It's good, but not great. Strong 3/5.
Interesting music. Complex structures, nice vocal melodies. The other negative comment I can make is that I think it's the kind of music you need to be focused to really capture and enjoy. I wouldn't mind listening to more albums, but I wouldn't internationally revisit.
Without being insulting, this is interesting. Not so much Whale please - more like I hit a bit of a Narwhal, couldn’t see the porpoise and long term it’s Dolphin, no thank you.
I honestly barely remember that I listened to this album. I'm sure it was fine otherwise I'd probably remember it more, but clearly not interesting enough that it made a impression Standouts - 3/5
Simultaneously uneven and repetitive, but I didn't hate it. I like the vibes if not the song writing.
Bueno
Dość ciekawe, ale w sumie mocno w stylu indie zespołów tamtych lat. Zestarzało się równie dobrze jak tatuaże wąsa na palcu. 6/10.
I’m afraid ultimately the music is too kooky for me.
From reading the reviews and description, I was convinced I was going to like this. On first listen, I didn't. The second listen was much better, but I'm not sure it'll become a favourite. It's ok
I am much more interested in the female vocalists than Dave Longstreth's stuff here. The strings are cool. "Stillness is the Move" is undoubtedly a fantastic song. I find myself humming that chorus a lot (thanks NBA 2K13 for introducing me to that one). The production really cranks up the space in between the instruments and the vocals which makes it feel somewhat tense and intimate. Liked it, did not love it.
сама битте орка заводная, напомнила ту песню где в конце кричат Мэээтт альбом разный, это интересно. но в целом не завлёк
Another album of ok music where I got bored half way through and stopped paying attention.
2 tracks in and I don't know where I stand with this album... his voice is decent enough and compliments the haphazard instrumentals. It's possibly these that are the issue; the instruments change course so often that there is nothing to hold on to. It's experimental at best and just a total mess at worst. I appreciate when a band tries to do something like this, to push the norms of musical structure that we've come to create, though really, it's rare that it's ever pulled off. Some songs get close, like "The Bride" and "Stillness is the Move", but others like "Temecula Sunrise" are just a frustrating jumble. Then there's "Two Doves", which was incredible, following a more traditional musical flow and with Deradoorian's absolutely gorgeous voice cradling the guitar riffs. "Useful Chamber" was something else too... with it's twin female vocal harmonies rising and falling in unison. This is where Dirty Projectors experimenting has paid off. It was saddling a 2 for the first half, but these two songs alone bring it to the 3.
Favorite Track: Temecula Sunrise
A lot of music packed into each song.
This was a pretty interesting listen. I was pretty disteactwd with personal issues while listening to it, but I did enjoy what I was hearing.
Fine nothing special
Pretty and strange, but not memorable. Gotta relisten at some point.
This was better in college
Temecula sunrise Stillness is the move
A bit all over the place. Lots of different influences....one had a Jeff Buckley feel, another a Nico feel, etc.
They were talented, sure, but I did not find that distinguishing factor that earned this album its spot on the list. It seemed quite similar to the other navel-gazing indie acts of that time.
Much better than expected. 3
The first songs of this album powered my 2009
Idk Not much here for me
Never heard of this. Let's head to Wiki for some essential context: <<The word "bitte" is a German word for "please", and "orca" is another name for a killer whale.>> Oh, word? Now I get it. So from the era & album cover I was hoping this would be some HAIM-ish indie girl pop. But alas! The main singer is a guy! (who sounds a little like the Mars Volta guy.) It is indie pop, though; sort of Arcade Fire-y. It's fine, but nothing struck me. Maybe I should have given that last Kinks album a 4 after all... Highlight: 'Stillness Is the Move' (girl singer! or impressive falsetto)
hey that was pretty cool - interesting and unique sound - reminds me a bit of Vampire Wknd
These guys really had their moment, didn't they? Dirty Projectors were widely admired by music industry people and other well known bands. They collaborated with the likes of David Byrne and Bjork around this time. They were critical darlings and had a respectable following. In some ways I can kind of see it. They sounded very different and hard to classify, which can be pretty exciting. But for many people, this will just come off sounding pretentious. The kind of thing that the Williamsburg hipsters would have laughed at other people for not "getting". It's music for people for feel like Animal Collective are too mainstream. I think the truth is a little bit of both. I'm ok with weird for weird's sake. It can be fun and it can influence other artists. It's like people creating new paint colors a few centuries ago. It's not high art in itself but it creates the tools for the other artists. I like some parts of this album, but probably not enough to spend much time with it.
This is an indie pop album that is really neither indie or pop. It’s hugely ambitious and whilst there is an indie guitar aesthetic at the heart of it it throws in jazz, African polyrhythms and complex vocal arrangements. As a result it’s not songs the milkman can whistle but it is engaging and exciting
so remarkably 2009
This was an album I liked more when it came out and has a couple great tracks but the vocals are too grating to me now to want to relisten.
pretty good indie album
Definitely was ok. Nothing groundbreaking, but it was alright.
Took some adjustment to get my head in this space. I loved some, liked some and some just didn't hit for me. Two Doves was lovely. Averaged as a 3 with wide dispersion.
Weird and discordant, painful but there is beauty to it. Sometimes reminded me of Björk. Might be worth a second listen. Not sure if I like the mixing and mastering, sounds like everything is compressed and doesn't have much space to breathe
Cohesive album. Joyful

My first thought upon listening to Dirty Projectors' Bitte Orca was that it was a 2010's hipster/alt-pop time capsule, and, lo and behold, it came out in 2009, so towards the beginning of that era. My second thought was that they "have to be from New York" (correct again; Brooklyn). There are so many sounds here are endemic of that specific time and place. Having never listened to them before, I didn't mind them. The Dirty Projectors' sound made me feel kind of nostalgic, and are pretty good, but I honestly don't know how often I'd return to this. Still enjoyable though!
Bjork-esque in lyrical oddness. Good background music but equally funky. Some good tunes but incoherent
I love how everything about Dirty Projectors reeks with ambition. From the ambiguous cover art to the nonsensical title. Being a little familiar with Dirty Projectors, but not a whole lot, I kind of knew what to expect, yet I was bemused by how close I was with the 'pretentious ambition' cliché. There are spindly guitars, the tempos shift, and everything sounds unsteady, as if it was deliberately artsy. Usually, I would enjoy this more. I'm vibing with Everything Everything, an equally ambitious indie band -- and I'd actually argue that they would need to be on this list more so than 'Bitte Orca'. Because they have tunes -- and Dirty Projectors do not. Well, not always, at least ...
Really liked the ending of this album. I don't agree with others that it was "needlessly complicated" or "disorganized." Mostly I am feeling like this was a fun break from the other stuff on this list. Probably won't ever come back to this, but it's interesting enough and I'm glad I listened to it.
From Wiki: "The word "bitte" is a German word for "please", and "orca" is another name for a killer whale. Frontman David Longstreth states that he liked the way the words sound together." Lmao that's the most pretentious 2010s hipster thing I've ever heard. It perfectly encapsulates the messy, disjointed chaos on this album (to what end?) whose sound is so 2010s indie it hurts. I won't go as far as to say I hate it, like a lot of other reviewers, because taste is subjective and I always salute artists for being bold and getting real weird with it. That's how music moves forward, after all. But as a young millennial who was in high school in 2009 - when this type of indie alt-pop was truly inescapable - I now know how GenX feels when they're subjected to bad albums from their heyday that failed to age well (and have that stereotypical sound). Again, I respect the effort. However, I'd recommend Hiatus Kaiyote's 2015 record 'Choose Your Weapon' if you want something similar to this that actually sticks the landing.
I was ready to hate this after looking at the reviews, but I kind of enjoyed it.
a strange album - it started quite good and then transitioned into i don't really know what
I mean really, What’s that?? Strange.
Pretty cool, kinda Bjork-ish (she sang with them a bunch of times)
Kind of a weird album. A good mixup after listening to so many of these albums now, so at least it’s got that going for it. Credit earned where credit is due for having a pretty creative sound but nothing was jaw dropping for me.
Interesante indie rock. Me hizo acordar por momentos a Radiohead, pero claramente peores. Estuvo entretenido. 6/10
Cool!
Interesting and well done, but nothing terribly noteworthy. Pitchfork: 9.2 Rolling Stone: n/a Best Songs Temecula Sunrise Stillness Is The Move No Intention
Honestly I enjoyed it. Total surprise, but it kinda weird and at times eclectic but the variety kept things fresh and the sudden tempo changes made sure I was paying attention
Took a few listens to get into the groove for this, but turned out quite a good listen. Quirky vocals, strange rhythms but melodies were catchy.
Kind of gentle and discordant without ever being particularly interesting. It was perfectly okay as background music.
Really interesting album. Id love to come back to it at some point and give it a bit more time Good, high 3
Straight off the bat you can hear the quality in the production value of this album. All the instruments are very precise in there unique playing styles. It does slightly remind me of a more recent band, Black Country New Road. Which is a compliment to say the least as there discography is very impressive. As always love the proggy elements of this, nice to hear that in a more indie sounding track. I think the standout of this album is probably the unique voice of David Longstreth. It perfectly compliments what else is going on in each track, especially with that twangy acoustic guitar being picked at throughout. I love the addition of Amber Coffman on ‘Stillness Is The Move’, and specifically the placement of the song in the album. I think it breaks up the record nicely and was most definitely intentional. Favourite tracks are: ‘Cannibal Recourse’, ‘Stillness Is The Move’, ‘Two Doves’ and ‘Useful Chamber’.
pop-rock tranquilito, buenas voces, musicalidad, alegre, está bien de fondo, mood tranquilo pero de buen humor, chill, 3/5 solido
Solid
Pretty nice music.
Interesting. good
i don't think i've listened to this album, but I may have heard other songs from this group in passing (i think it was the album they did with Bjork?) i remember sort of enjoying it, so i have high hopes Cannibal Resource - 3/5 Temecula Sunrise - 1/5 The Bride - 3/5 Stillness Is the Move - 3/5 Two Doves - 4/5 Useful Chamber - 4/5 No Intention - 3/5 Remade Horizon - 3/5 Fluorescent Half Dome - 4/5 Average score: 3.1/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️ as someone who is usually a huge fan of art pop, i'm afraid i didn't enjoy this nearly as much as i hoped i would there's just too much going on both instrumentally and vocally in my personal opinion, especially in the beginning. are we trying to be folk? math rock? i'm all for experimentation and combining genres, but here it's all clashing and it lowkey giving me a headache on the bright side, their sound seems to be a little more focused and easier on the ears in the last half. there's interesting ideas happening here, but it could've used some refinement
I liked it more than I thought I would. Some of the songs towards the end grew on me.
Top Songs: Cannibal Resource Stillness is the Move
Gave me sprinkles of Jeff Buckley vibes.
This was pretty standard indie fare, I really didn't find a ton to be super attached to in this. It was good no doubt, but it is sort of the type of album that makes me question why it was included. I don't get how this is some unskippable album everyone should hear, it was like super normal. Favorites: Cannibal Resource, The Bride, Useful Chamber
Album is okay but not something I'd listen to again. I did enjoy their popular song 'Stillness is a Move'
3.5/5 Okay this was looking like a typical good on first listen 3 star album but Useful Chamber just earned it a relisten. And they remind me so much of BCNR.
Nothing struck me during one way or the other
Tough listen on a Monday morning, but cool to listen something from them other than the björk collab
3/5
3.2 2x enjoyable indie but i dont see revisiting
I was not in the proper mood to focus on this properly. I can say it is interesting and different without being inaccessible. I think I might like it even better after more listens but for now it is a 3/5.
I'd heard of the Dirty Projectors and they were featured a lot in the NYC indie music book Meet 'Me in the Bathroom' so this was a fun listen. The album and best song were both ranked #2 behind Animal Collective's 'Merriweather Post Pavilion' and "My Girls," which I love. Super creative and love that they make interesting music rather than radio-edited pop hits. Not my exact favorite songs but liked a couple. Glad to move on knowing more about them.
Not really my type of music
I admire the attempt but ultimately nothing really stayed with me.
Þetta var áhugavert, aldrei heyrt um þessa hljómsveit. Fílaði nokkur lögin betur en önnur. Erfitt að segja samt að þetta eigi heima á þessum lista.
What an odd album. There are moments of pop greatness and moments of awful falsetto. The female vocals are much better than the male vocals. The instrumentation is hit or miss as well. Just enough to maintain a 3
I'll probably never listen to this album ever again but having said that, it's not bad.
Assuming this has some connection to the +Bjork EP, due to the orca theme. I like the EP quite a bit, and was disappointed this wasn’t as good. I guess that’s the +Bjork factor. This doesn’t grind my gears the way a lot of semi-cutesy indie rock does, but I’m not writing home about it either.
Too flowery and atmospheric for my taste. Excellent vocals. Well written, just not by bag.
I don’t hate it, but it sounds like a slightly less annoying pared down Andrew Bird to me and I’m a little perplexed about this standing out as a must add to the list
An unexpectedly pleasant modern indie rock while staying unique
I imagine this is what indie sounds like to people who don't like indie.
Interesting group. With 3 different lead singers it really changes the dynamics of the music from song to song.
I kept coming back to this one and listening to it again on accident and I think I think it’s pretty cool
Stillness is the move is een prachtig nummer holy shit. Toch 3 sterren. FAVO: Stillness is the move, No intention
Sounds like my college radio station's playlist for indie. Right up my alley, but nothing too crazy to write home about. Cannibal Resource ★★★☆☆ Temecula Sunrise ★★★☆☆ The Bride ★★★☆☆ Stillness Is the Move ★★★★☆ Two Doves ★★★☆☆ Useful Chamber ★★★☆☆ No Intention ★★★☆☆ Remade Horizon ★★★☆☆ Fluorescent Half Dome ★★★☆☆ Average Album Rating: 3.1/5.0 ★★★☆☆
This sounds like a modern progressive rock. Kinda good.
trip and a half sounds like songs that would be played in midsommar
There are parts that I like. Most of it seems contrived and ”artsy” for the sake of being ”artsy”. That might be a reason as good as any, but for me it doesn’t seem genuine.
This is very 2009. I don't think I am the target audience - but I'm sure the indie/emo hipsters back then had a great time with this.
solid album. not my favorite but not bad
Like Grizzly Bear and Vampire Weekend had a baby and decided as a family to raise that baby without choruses. Had a great time, did miss the choruses, though.
I remember liking this when I first heard it but it feels dated now. Very late 2000s Indie Rock, everything is staccato. Still kinda fun but I don’t think I’ll go back to it often.
6.5/10
I had low expectations after reading the reviews… but I thought it was great 👍
A lot of alternative sounds, very diverse, but overall a bit meh. 3/5
2.5

ha s erste lied cool gfunde. aber s isch wiedermol e indie "band" wo s projekt isch vomne guy. has bim ufruume glost und find immer wieder sache meeega geil und sache chli seltsam. fluorescent half dome het zb en merega geile beat.
Nothing special
3/5
What a weird album (not a bad thing). It's a type of alternative music that I really don't like, but it has so many wacky guitar moments that I've loved here. All in all, it's a boring album for me, but it has incredibly fun moments. 3/5
Meh. I didn’t hate it as much as others seemed to, but I can’t say I loved it either. 3* at best.
Zu kompliziert für Unterhaltungsmusik.
Interesting. I think a unique sound/style overall. Was not greatly moved by it but parts ere intriguing.
While I didn't love this, at least it was different without being just obnoxious. It was somewhat poppy but also was quite different than just straight pop.
I discovered Dirty Projectors through the NPR Tiny Desk Concert series. They have a super unique sound, it doesn't always work, imo, but I thought it worked really well in Stillness is the Move.
Interesting for a listen, on the verge of something grander. Not my thing this time around, but musical quality is good. I feel singularly un-hooked.
Maybe 4
This album was really nice
Strange, random, sometimes a-melodic music. Once was enough.
They say they want something original but they can't even handle this album
It was okay. There’s a lot of eclectic sounds. Think I listened to about 70% of the album. Could finish it - but fancy the next album.
later
Listened Before? N Sorta a unique sound here. Almost acapella in places. Lots of voices contributing. I liked this one. Added to Library? N Songs added to playlist: Stillness Is The Move
The hipster in me is still alive.
Primera recomendación 25/10/25
A solid alt/indie/pop album. I have no idea why its taking up space on this list. Infinitely forgettable but not the worst I've heard. 3/5
I really don’t know how to rate this. Loved a lot, hated the rest. But I do appreciate the originality! This took some effort to come up with, do sure.
Groupe inconnu. =>3/5
Oddly my opinion hasn't changed much in the decade+ since this came out: some amazing moments but too ornate most of the time.
Cannibal ressource - this is very fun, like i just smile the whole time haha 4/5 (fav) Temecula sunrise - like the guitar in the beginning, the singing and instrumentals dont sound so good together i find, a jit better in the chorus 2/5 The bride -3/5 Stillness is the move - 3/5 Two doves - so soothing 4/5 (close 2nd fav) Useful chamber - liek the vibe, feels like multiple songs just out behind each other, bitte orca orca bitte🕺🕺 3,5/5 No intention - 3/5 Remade horizon - it gives dancing in the golden hour in the living room with a loved one and orange curtains filtering the sunlight 3,8/5 Fluorescent half dome - chill vibe but a bit too long for my liking 3/5 —->3/5
This seems like something I would like, but I didn’t really get it. It’s unusual, but somehow also pretty bland. I was disappointed. Favorite: Two Doves 3?
The frontman said this album felt like colors interacting. That context helps. It's like they took every musical idea they had over the previous year, put it into a kaleidoscope and turned the tube. Shifting layers, sounds randomly coming and going, rarely any of it repeating. Thats cool, but it takes so much effort to track; you've really got to engage to keep up. Whole album at once was too much, like sitting next to someone who is very nice but talks too much.
sounds a bit like arcade fire probably shouldnt be on the list, but i liked it
Ok so on one hand, the large contingency of british people on this website HATE this album. On the other hand, /r/Indieheads adores this album. I fall somewhere in the middle. It seems like it's really trying hard to be unique and weird, and it doesn't always work. It's not an unlistenable pile of crap, 1001. It's not amazing, reddit. 3/5
This one was fine. Didn't love it didn't hate it. I do think I liked the second half of the album better. 3 stars
I think this would've been my jam in my twenties. A bit too all over the place for me now.
I liked much of this. Nothing mind blowing, but interesting and quirky. Good clean family fun. 3.4
Short review I guess. It's a strong 3.
Extremely vivid flashback to being a sophomore in college. I thought I liked this album but halfway through I remembered I only really like Stillness Is The Move and how the guy says “bitte orca orca bitte.”
I feel like I should have found this one more interesting. But it really didn’t catch me. Fine as a listen but wasn’t intrigued for more.
Hadn’t heard of this band or this album before. Was better than I thought it might be, but still a little forgettable.
Pretty good album with a nice variety of voicing.
They have a nice sound, but the falsetto and the mandolin (?) phrasing gets old after a while.
Meh.
Temecula Sunrise // Stillness Is The Move // Two Doves //
It was definitely different! But a bit odd.
Bitte Orca This really takes me back to circa 2009, a guy I worked with loved this album and was always putting it on in the office. I wasn’t massively into it back then but it’s definitely a bit more interesting than I recall, even if I’m still not totally into it. It very much feels like late 00s indie, a bit of Vampire Weekend, a bit of Bloc Party, a touch of math rock and experimental guitar-noise squiggles, which is not my favourite type of music, and despite some good stuff it is a bit patchy, not all of it working, Fluorescent Half Dome being the least successful probably. Cannibal Resource is a good opener though, and Temecula Sunrise takes a western sounding intro and makes it into a pleasantly wonky bit of indie. I really like Stillness is the Move, the female vocals work a bit better than the male vocals, the guitar line is nice, as is the bass and No Intention is good too, a similar type of track with the guitar and bass doing the same sort of thing as Stillness is the Move. And Remade the Horizon is decent, particularly the outro section. I’ll go 3, I’d listen again, even if it isn't that satisfying overall. 🐋🐋🐋 Playlist submission: Stillness is the Move
Reminds me a bit of Field Music: similar math-rock-adjacent playing?
I kept tuning it out while I was listening, so it must not have been annoying. Pleasant and melodic.
I'm not sure wahht to make of this quirky, slightly prententious, Art Pop album that reminds me of Robert Fripp. Is it bad - no, but should it be in this list - probably not.
Kinda pretentious, but I liked this. In my Goldilocks zone of weird but not too weird. Listened before: no Will listen again: probably
It's a weird album for sure, but I quite enjoyed it. The guitar playing is quite random and erratic and reminds me of Captain Beefheart at times. The playing and singing is all quite varied and the album doesn't wear out its welcome. There's intricacies and interesting tempo changes all throughout here. Not really my music but I enjoyed it.
This what imagine trout mask replica sounded would've sounded like if the band was being tortured. And that somehow makes it worse?? It has its moments but its overall a bit annoying to listen to
Enjoyable album. This is the reason why I wanted to do this project- to discover stuff like this!
Pretty good. The singing is very unique to hear although it sounds rather simple and I quite like that quality. The lyrics are good and the backing for the tracks are both peaceful and enjoyable. Unfortunately no one element stands out particularly well.
It started off okay. Then, I started to lose interest.
I liked this more than I thought I would, and evidently more than a lot of people do. Granted, the millennial experimentalism eventually kind of wore me down. But also, it’s very neat, and there are some beautiful tracks here. Happy to have listened to it. Fave songs: - Cannibal Resource - Temecula Surprise - The Bride - Two Doves - Remade Horizon
raar album met rare stemmetjes en rare tempo wisselingen... maar toch ergens niet zo goed als andere rare albums
I've heard of this band but I don't believe I have listened to a track of theirs. Definitely reminds me of all the music that was being released in the early 2010s. I can see why this album would fall in this list. 3-stars for me though.
They’re calling it the most millennial-coded album of all time
Ein wenig verwirrende Klangkompositionen in Mischung aus Beat, Lounge und Ounk.
This wasn't too bad, but the man has an irritating voice
Fun in a quirky way, but not sure I would relisten.
3.5
Creative, pretty, and chaotic. Some of the intentional off-beat loops can get uncomfortable before resolving into a melodic pay-off.. on some tracks though, it can be so frequent that it demands too much attention and patience of the listener (e.g. Temecula Sunrise, the opening of Useful Chamber, Remade Horizon). Still, when the record was released -- during the height of Pitchfork-era indie quirk -- it stood out as a bold experiment. The result was a fun and melodic indie-jazz album that remains worth appreciating. Also what makes the record so strong and worth coming back to are the near-R&B hit Stillness Is The Move and beautiful Two Doves.
This sounds very 00s to me. You can hear the influence of "freak folk" and electro-acoustic acts like The Books, Caribou and Four Tet.
6/10 Favorite: Stillness Is The Move
Bitte Orca – Dirty Projectors (2009) | Experimental Pop / Indie Rock | Avg: 7.06 | Favorite Song: “Stillness Is the Move”* Bitte Orca is one of those albums that feels like it’s constantly shifting under your feet; it's inventive, intricate, and occasionally polarizing. “Stillness Is the Move” stands tall as the crown jewel, where the band’s off-kilter rhythms and vocal layering suddenly snap into something deeply catchy and emotionally resonant. Your scores show a solid appreciation across the board, with most tracks falling in the mid-6 to 8 range, suggesting that while not every experiment lands, the record succeeds more often than it stumbles. There’s a cerebral quality to this album, and at times it does ask for a bit of patience. Tracks like “Temecula Sunrise” and “No Intention” show how the band balances complexity with bursts of groove and melody. But it’s also easy to see how the slightly lower scores reflect moments where the eccentricity overshadows accessibility. Still, the album’s ambition is part of its charm. Bitte Orca doesn’t aim to please everyone; it aims to push boundaries, and in doing so, it creates some stunning highs and a genuinely original sonic world.
súper mid con algunas secciones más entretenidas y supongo que profundas. no me causó nada. nota: 3/5
Interesting
Different, kind of catchy. Might need a second listen
Tykkäsin itseasiassa aika paljon vaikken osaa oikeen selittää ees miks.
Girls singing was fairly nice. I didn’t need the man.
