Reviews (page 4 of 8)

I think this is what “WtF?!” was made for…but in a good way…I think…mostly. Perhaps I’m the twee hipster who falls for this particular type of shit, but I liked this in that way that you like it when a stranger (perhaps a person living with dementia) tells you you’re good looking or that they like your shirt, it looks good on you, that way that makes you go “Huh, weird” , but that pushes a dopamine button on your chemical control panel, and so imprinting a positive feeling memory in your hippocampus.

Can’t say it better than Mike (as usual). Totally agree.

A quirky and pleasant album. Totally new to me.

Far from the worst thing I've listened to recently, I thought the vocals would annoy me but they strangely suit the melodies at play here. This could be one that grows on me, should I find myself returning to it in the future.

Took a while to get started, but once it does it's great

Very interesting electronic instrumentals which work harmoniously with the two vocals which both have their turns in the spotlight. Some experimental reverb and other effects on the guitar makes it a fun listen. “No Intention” is my favourite, hands down, simply for its soulful and lively vocals accompanied by the backdrop of the simple instrumentals🤩.

Nice indie, nothing too revolutionary

A wonderful foray into avant garde art pop containing many interesting textures. I could mull over the soundscapes presented in this album forever; however at the end of the day this album seems so concerned over the landscapes it paints that it overlooks the impact on the listener, which in my opinion not resounding but muted in contrast to the colors this album tries to present

I'm torn between really enjoying this, and being tired of the pop-iness. I can't really decide how I feel about it. I'd give it a strong 2.5 stars.

Less charming than it was on release, still technically incredible

Too hectic for my brain

I was really ready to hate this ... but that is why we listen BEFORE we judge.

Pop structures with some avant garde weirdness mixed in. I can’t shake the “indie sleaze”-ness of the record, though. So so so many people forced themselves to listen to this record because it got buzz from Pitchfork

very weird album NGL but interesting nonetheless

Never heard of this album before - and it was better than I expected but still not going to use up cash on the album. Nice vocals though!

Interesting and eh. But maybe I wasn't in the right mood for it

Starts strong. Goes downhill quickly. Nice guitar playing.

Favorite Track: Stillness Is The Move

Weird without being good or bad

It's never good when I read 'experimental' in the description. This wasn't too bad though.

Did Bitte Orca NEED to be on the list? Questionable... I didn't fall in love with the album, but it's a unique, quirky experience and a welcome breath of fresh air through the usual early rock stuff on here. I put this on the speaker, and looking past the sometimes overbearing vocalizations, it was a decently fun vibe. Standout: Useful Chamber

Nice album art. This is cute artsy music. Lotsa falsettos and acoustic plucking with some rando-sparse electonica sprinkled in. It makes me think of that band from the mid-00's, The Dodos. Dude sounds like Ted Leo without the PR cred.

I like indie rock. But Dirty Projectors is too indie for me. Too off-kilter. Much potential in little bits, but ruined by discordance. The single, “Stillness is the Move,” is by the far the best track, and much of that is due to it sounding very different from the rest of the album, including the vocals from Amber Coffman. Aside from “Stillness,” where does the Dirty Projector sound fit into the indie rock landscape? Ed Droste of Grizzly Bear had an interesting take on it, explaining that “Someone was asking me about what I was listening to and I was saying ‘Oh, Dirty Projectors, I love the new album,’ and they were like, ‘Well what kind of music is it?’ and I just stopped dead in my tracks and literally didn't know how to describe it. At first I was embarrassed because I didn't know how to describe it, but then I was like, this is what's so amazing about a lot of music now. There are so many different things and there's so much going on and Bitte Orca is so distinctly Dirty Projectors that I didn't even know how to begin to describe what genre it is, you know? What would one categorize it as? So I find it hard lately to label things as indie or pop or folk or give it some sort of categorization.” The genre bending and blending can be amazing, but it can also result in a mess that never really clicks. There’s a lot of indie rock that fits Droste’s apt description, and that hard-to-categorize music can be interesting but also has a much lower ceiling for widespread success. While there is more rock music out there than ever before, much of it is not palatable to the mainstream. Not that it has to be. Be artsy. Be avant garde. But a lot of that doesn’t hit for me. That’s the space Dirty Projectors inhabits.

Nice. Haven't listened to this record in a long time, but I remember when it first debuted. Really enjoyed it then and still do today. It's a quirky, upbeat record with some interesting time signatures and rhythms. The melodies are cool and fun, as well as the vocals. This is a cool album.

Everything I hate about indie folk

I read about praise for the album and award recognition and I'm perplexed. It's like anything eclectic and out there we want to anoint as the greatest thing since sliced bread. What if we let the stoners pick award winning music? Likely not ideal. So why do we let the bohemian art students pick the awards? That's what this feels like. I mean, this album is fine and all but it's just another example of indie techno pop (or rock if you want to go that far). I kind of dig David Longstreth's guitar and vocals but the off-time female vocals (I'm sure that was intentional) on Cannibal Resource and a few other songs was a bit grating. So was Longstreth's off-time approach to the title track and a couple other songs. All of it made this feel a bit like a Bjork or Sugarcubes album. And now I get why the critics love it and why it didn't totally resonate with me.

Okay album

Never heard of the group. Ok listen.

Nervous, twitchy caterwauling voice over similarly twitchy yowling sparse indie instrumentation. Unique.

Oddly.. refreshing?

3 - it was decent. Definitely not the worst album some made it out to be. Really weird and at points got a bit too over the top

weird and quirky… but not necessarily in a bad way. i much prefer the few songs with the female singer than with the male singer.

I have no idea what to think if this(It's like a Pop version of "Yeezus", but I won't insult it that much). It was released right after I graduated from high school, and somehow, I missed this one. I guess it's not good, or bad; it's"Bitter Orca", and I'll just leave it at that. Favorite Track: "Stillness Is The Move".

I think my three stars can't capture quite how interesting this record is. My favourite aspects of this record bring to mind the Animal Collective album released in the same year. There's a lot more to it than that though, they are far more fragmented, a lot more abstract, happy to hinge a whole songs off of a series of non-sequiturs. A patchwork album of patchwork songs. Its fascinating. I'm just not sure my brain can make it completely work for me.

Interesting. I didn’t mind listening to it once, it can’t see ever revisiting it.

Again completely unexpected, but I grew to like it. It was both like the calm and the storm.

-very interesting music… super anachronistic early Obama administration indie sound -I first became aware of Dirty Projectors through their collab with Björk and a YouTuber I liked mentioning them. I thought this was really cool… some songs were better than others but overall it had a great sound. Stillness Is The Move is sooo good I will be playing it on repeat -Favorites are Cannibal Resource, Stillness Is The Move, and Two Doves

I gave this a couple of listens and it didn't make a huge impression on me. It wasn't bad, but it was definitely erratic, with several different styles that sort of alternated... not really mashed together so much as happening in sequence one after another. This seems like a very niche pick for the 1001.

Nice enough. But not a stand out.

A perfectly tolerable listen but not a memorable track or emotion in sight. A bit too aware of it's own "quirkiness" to pakc any kind of punch for me. I think I would have loved this in 2009 but unfortunately I heard it in 2025.

Sounds totally 2009 and still different from 2009 at the same time. I last dipped my toes in their music a few years back (because frontman Dave Longstreth’s brother Jake co-hosts the digital radio show Time Crisis with Ezra Koenig and I was having an extremely strong Vampire Weekend phase) but still not entirely sure what I think of it. The bits I like best do remind me a lot of Vampire Weekend but there’s definitely a real uniqueness to their sound too. Not something I find myself particularly excited by though but again I’m not sure why. Favourite tracks are The Bride and No Intention. (3.5 stars)

This was so lovely I remember listening to two doves years ago idk where I heard it but I completely forgot about it until today!!! Beautiful

Not that interesting. Someone should have told him that the weird female vocals needed to go where dreams go to die.

1. Cannibal Resource - 8/10 2. Temecula Sunrise - 6.5/10 3. The Bride - 7/10 4. Stillness Is the Move - 7.8/10 5. Two Doves - 8/10 6. Useful Chamber - 5/10 7. No Intention - 5/10 8. Remade Horizon - 5.5/10 9. Fluorescent Half Dome - 7.5/10 6/10

Olipahan kummallista. Rumpali yritti ja onnistuikin soittamaan väärään tahtiin. Kai tämä jotain taidetta on

It was meh nothing amazing it wasn’t groundbreaking

Parts sounded really good but the dudes voice is no bueno. Liked the female artists more. Overall sound was good but could’ve been a whole lot better. A lot better than I was expecting though, was expecting some sort of artsy prog rock, so this was a pleasant surprise.

cool, definitely different and experimental, most of it sounds good

Interesting use of different time signatures throughout the album. The use of voices is very hypnotic, kind of reminds me of Lorde. The music gives me hints of Yes, Rush and Zappa with some nice guitar work. Nice find.

Fun album good supports

Fine enough. Had some ups and downs. Probably would have listened to this if I knew about it when it came out

This was going to be a 4, but caught me on the wrong day where the angular and spiky songs hit wrong and annoyed me. Ultimately the instruments and vocals sounded so distinct from each other, rather than helping into a coherent sound.

Quite interesting, touches of pop and folk psychedelia, mixed up with Lo Fi indie experimentalism. Not sure this will make me a big fan but it was definitely worth a listen

This is a good album! I like the opening track "Cannibal Resource". They have a bit of a Sufjan Stevens feel. 3.6/5, so I'm going 3/5. Don't think a 4 is warranted.

They have a unique sound and plenty of interesting ideas, but it rarely results in a memorable melody or hook.

A decent indie rock album. Sounds fresh. Even the songs that didn't particularly interest me were kind of good. Lyrically just dreamy narratives about love and life. Liked the songs that had a burst of heaviness amid the general slow tempo of the album. Temicula Sunrise,The Bride and my favourite from the album Useful Chamber. Good vocal performances too. Not only lead, but the background vocal harmonies were also very gorgeous. Still many songs from the album failed to impress me. Maybe just not my taste. A 2.5 or 3.

Chat, am I old? This is a time capsule that reminds me of a time when hipsters were hipsters before hipsters were cool. I usually resent that sound these days (reminds me of my cringiest self), but this band is super talented which redeems the album a little. It’s got the crispy indie-pop sound from Vampire Weekend, bud sadly mixed with the annoying soulless vibe of Jacob Collier. I’ll never listen to anything on this again, but I guess I get why it’s on this list. SOFT 3 *** For the record I made a mistake scoring that doodooass Timeless album as a 3/5. For posterity, know I’d give it a 1/5. Still getting a feel of my rating system. Apologies for fucking up the stats. ***

Unique, I’ll give you that.

If David Byrne had a baby with Vespertine-era Björk. 3.5

i do have some nostalgia for this sorta sound but it wears down sorta quickly, which is how i feel about a number of this style's albums, idk if it's burnout from how much this sound was in indie pop at the time. i do like the crunchy percussion and splashy chords and the rhythmic density.

To be honest Bitte Orca by Dirty Projectors is a bit of a mixed bag for me. While there are moments where the album shows some creative flair, overall it just doesn’t really hit the mark and leaves me a tad underwhelmed There’s no denying the ambition behind this record. The production is pretty interesting. layers of off-kilter melodies and inventive arrangements that, at times, feel like a breath of fresh air. Some tracks have a quirky charm, with unexpected twists and a sense of experimental brilliance that can really catch you off guard. The vocals, when they’re on point, add a unique character to the tunes, and there are bits where the instrumentation is downright impressive. However, for me, most of the album ends up feeling overly messy and a bit all over the place. The experimental nature of Bitte Orca is clearly there, but it often comes across as unfocused, making it hard to latch onto a consistent vibe. The lack of cohesion means that despite some decent ideas, the overall listening experience feels disjointed. I found myself drifting off and thinking, “This isn’t really doing it for me,” more times than not. It’s a shame because there are flashes of brilliance, but they’re buried beneath a load of convoluted arrangements that just don’t gel. In my perspective, Bitte Orca is an album that tries hard to be innovative, but it ultimately falls short of being truly engaging. While I can appreciate the effort and the occasional moment of creative genius, the overall experience left me rather lukewarm – a proper 2.7/5 stars. It’s one of those records that might work for some, but for me, it just didn’t manage to keep my interest for the long haul.

It sounds so much like the music they play at milenial burger places. Besides that it's pretty nice, not that for me but I can imagine being in the mood for it when having a moment in the inevitable situation in which I become a podcaster in brooklyn

Unusual, original sound. I think that the more I listened, the less interested I became. I don't particularly like David Longstreth's vocals here. I do really like the album cover though; it's simple but I find it striking. I'm not sure I could have guessed how they were going to pronounce the words "Temecula Sunrise" in 20 guesses.

Interesting, but more obnoxious than anything. Most songs felt like a “look at me look how avante garde i am” and I didn’t really connect with any of them. I liked the production though and the complexity but meh

Quite enjoyed this. 7/10

3.5 stars. Avante-garde indie rock/pop. Tough to define with it's unconventional sound and stop-start melodies. Beautiful moments at times though. Standout tracks are "Stillness Is The Move" with Amber Coffman's singing and catchy hook, and "No Intention".

13/02/25 I wasn't really a fan and it was quite boring.

fun sound at times

Indie pop that was not derivative or uninteresting. Plus, the title translates to Please Orca. Which starts an entirely different discussion about politeness to sea mammals and what the orca was being asked to do.

Overall cozy album with interesting sound patterns and fun experiments. I found the album to be thematically a bit all over the place and some of the writing a little nonesensical. However this was I think a fine, be it one time, listen. Favorite track: no intention. Overall score: 6.6/10

80s throwbacks, with a dash of Indie

Democrats vs Republicans

I actually enjoyed this even tho it felt like an 0815 indie album

Hadn’t heard of them before and quite enjoyed this album.

Stellar vocal work by the American experimental band, who caught the attention of none other than Björk herself, and led her to perform on the follow-up EP to this album. *Bitte Orca* currently occupies the 26th slot in my own personal ranking of the albums released in 2009. Which is not too bad, I guess. That said, there are so many other pivotal releases from that year that Dimery's book doesn't mention -- including some by acts such as Girls, Fuck Buttons and Vic Chesnutt that could easily be placed in the top 5 positions... You see where I'm heading at here? Besides, I partly share the impression of many casual listeners on this app : *Bitte Orca* is maybe a little too obfuscated and well-mannered for its own good. You can draw all sorts of wonderful doodles if you want, but once in a while, the economy of a straight line is a thing of wonder as well. It's a lesson those admittedly great musicians and performers seem to have lost along the way. And it's maybe why I don't think this LP, as artfully crafted as it is, will ever go straight to my heart. 3/5 for the purposes of this list of essential albums 8/10 for more general purposes (5 + 3) Number of albums left to review: around a hundred, as I've gone over the 1000 line and this generator is including albums from all editions of the book Number of albums from the list I find relevant enough to be mandatory listens: 445 Albums from the list I *might* include in mine later on: 267 Albums from the list I won't include in mine: 324 (including this one)

This initially washed over me, but I thought I’d give it another go and it’s definitely a grower. I do have a thing for lo-fi indie beats with slightly fae vocals, and one of the singers reminded me of Lily Allen or someone in that sort of oeuvre. The standout highlight track for me was Two Doves which had some gorgeous strings and minimal guitar. This isn’t going to set the world on fire, but it might spark an ember somewhere with someone who enjoys it.

I'm a bit torn by this one. With this kind of experimental pop it's sometimes hard to distinguish between genius and intellectual self-gratification. Sometimes I wanted to smash my headphones, sometimes I was enjoying what I was listening to. Might require another listen to fully make my mind.

Up to track 6, this feels not bad but long af. can't believe I'm only like 25 minutes in

They reminded me a lot of White Denim. And much like them it’s interesting stuff but not something I’ll listen to often

Never really got in to this band. They seem kind of like a poor man's Akron/Family to me. It was fine for sure, and I probably would have been more in to this if I had actually heard it closer to when it came out.

very cool album, don’t know if i’d listen again but it is something i very much enjoyed listening to, although at times it was a little creepy or just out of my comfort zone.

Loved that they try to do something different & do some experimentation with sounds .. . But ultimately it's like some drunk dudes in a garage just banging on stuff. A couple of the songs are really enjoyable though. 2.5 for being off the wall.

High 3. I enjoyed this album a lot more than I thought I would. Also sick that one of the songs was in NBA 2k13

Its polyrythmic, poly tonal, and not afraid to let its freak flag fly. not my cup of tea but respect. very vampire weekend feeling.

Really not sure whether this is great or terrible. 'Stillness is the move' is a great song but I think the rest of the album might just be pretentious bollocks. It's probably pass marks but only just. Getting a generous 3/5 here.

Some jams on here but also a few moment where they lean far to hard on weird scream melodies.

I heard elements of Peace and Superfood in a number of the songs, not sure if Dirty Projectors are known for unusual melodies and lyrics but this album seemed full of them. Having said that, I am a fan of Superfood and Peace so in turn I did enjoy those fleeting moments of reminiscence. Initial thoughts were a 4 but the songs kept getting weirder and/or worse. By the time Useful Chambers ended I was really missing the opening few tracks, what a fucking weird song that was or should I say songs because I didn’t know if I was coming or going during the never ending changes. You wouldn’t believe my sheer delight to hear No Intention, I thought it was a resurgence and the album was ending the way it began. Unfortunately, the penultimate song did not live up to its predecessor and i was left pondering if the album would end on a high like I expected or go back to the middle offerings. Lo and behold I was brought back to what I enjoyed about the start of the album… nonsense lyrics and what I can only describe as erratic melodies. Overall it was pretty middle of the road, nowhere near the terrible depths of our dear dead David or the tone deaf Dylan but could not compete with the ever seeing Stevie or club classic Chic. Fair to say this did not get a second listen

Some very cool moments that border on math rock, but also a lot of generic sparkly 00s indie.

A cool project by dirty projectors. I like the vocal and key change experimentations although they can sometimes be grating. 3/5

Weird but it was kinda really good?

It’s fine, totally listenable. I can see how in older times it resonated more for people. Idk the thing with Dirty Projectors is I can’t forget when the main dude made this other wildly pathetic and vaguely misogynistic album after his bandmate/girlfriend left him (they had also cheated on their previous partners to get together). Just very embarrassing and an album that should have stayed in the old brain buddy! Made me think less of everything he does tbh

Ihan kivaa modernia indie rokkia. Parhaat: Two Doves, No Intention, Fluorescent Half Dome

Kind of fun and different. I enjoyed this.

Mids. Just mids.

Didn't like it first, but it slowly grew on me. A bit like a polyrhythmic Vampire Weekend at times.

The songs I liked I really liked, but this was a very inconsistent album.

little too weird

Some nice parts but a little too weird for a lot of it.

This was fine. I don't think it was as bad as others have stated. I think it captures a lot of the culture of 2009. Is it timeless, I'm not sure, but I am happy I listened to it. Best Songs: Cannibal Resource, Stillness Is The Move Worst Songs: Temecula Sunrise

Interesting enough to make up for some of the mis-steps.

Interesting, but not something I'd choose to listen to.

Okay-arty and semi-interesting, but lacks flow and one fails to connect too deeply for the bands' too much jumping around.

Never listened before and not a bad first listen

It was alright

Good album. Reminds me of tune yards. Love the freedom. 3 because I would pull the record out and know what else I wanted to play. Personally 4 because it's fun!

not my cup of tea

Interesting album, although maybe nothing groundbreaking. It had hints of Flaming Lips and Bjork. Enjoyable enough listen, but doubt I'll revisit 3/5

It was weird but it fit the mood as I was having a nightcelwalk stargazing

strano ma stranamente piacevole

Pretty murder whale. This album was pretty not sure where the orca tidbit comes in but solid overall

Nothing too exciting, but not bad either. The album was alright, nothing really happened but we have had far worse ones, so I would say this goes somewhere in the middle.

Cannibal Resource 4 Temecula Sunrise 2.9 The Bride 3 Stillness Is the Move 4 Two Doves 2.8 Useful Chamber 3 No Intention 4 Remade Horizon 2.8 Fluorescent Half Dome 2.9 Score: 3.266666667

8/20/24. Interesting avant-garde style album with multiple vocalists. Couldn't attach to the songs as much, but still enjoyed the album as a whole.

Strong start with first two songs, but gets a little less strong in the middle. Do think the sound is very cool though, and like the band ofc.

Should have been up my alley but it wasn't. It's just fine.

3 out of 5. It's a unique album with beautiful staccato singing but doesn't grab my attention otherwise. Favorite song: Two Doves

Acceptable background music. Won't go back to this

Damn good album. 3.5

full mikið listaskóla krútterí fyrir minn smekk. en inn á milli eru skemmtilegar melódíur með góðum ryþma. 3,5.

It’s okay 🤷🏻‍♂️

Weird, I like it. But the only reason I'm giving three stars is the song Two Doves: it's one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard, and I've heard a lot of stuff.

A little weird, but some interesting parts!

I think I liked this album a lot more before I discovered David Longstreth is a complete knob.

Interesting. Not my overall favorite type but interesting

Chamber-Pop? This was pretty interesting, at least 4 vocalists, lots of skeletal backing vocals reminding me of ‘we suck young blood’ / ‘you and whose army?’ Radiohead. 3/5 and as a new-ish band a solid 0/5 on the yewtree scale

Goes alright. Should listen to more DP

I don't hear anything groundbreaking here. Mostly just late 00's indie rock that was played all over the radio at HMV when I worked there as a teenager.

Enjoyable 3.5

When they sound like the Flaming Lips I like it. sometimes the vocals grated a little

I get and appreciate what they're trying to do, it doesn't work for me, but still getting a 3

Brightened up a dull rainy morning. Not exactly my cuppa coffee but wasn't at all bad.

out of all of the albums on this list, this is one of them

Not going to pretend I'm crazy about this one. I think it's well made and I can see the appeal. Maybe on a second listen I'll connect with it more

This album was on my wishlist for a long time, and when I finally listened, I was a bit disappointed. That’s not to say it’s a bad album, just not really what I was expecting. On further listens, and listens to other Dirty Projectors albums, I think I’ve begun to enjoy this album more, although I much more enjoy their follow-up Swing Lo Magellan.

Somewhat experimental vocals: strange, halting, random trills. Easy to see influence this album has on later music scene. Highlights are Stillness in Motion and No Intentions.

Feels weird to type, but I got "Stillness Is the Move" over a fucking decade ago through some promotional means (CD I got at a festival? iTunes free single? No idea). I always really liked that track, but never really dug further in, and maybe I saved myself some time. The pretentious part of me says this is fine, but the one looking for anything else isn't super satisfied. There's some great guitar work here, and at certain parts it feels like they're going for an orchestral movement rather than your traditional pop song, but at the end of the day, it just feels like Williamsburg's blog-indie response to Captain Beefheart. Favorite tracks: "Stillness Is the Move", "Useful Chamber"

This is interesting and original sounding but not sure if that is a positive thing.

A fine, occasionally interesting, but in essential album. Had some fun stuff with time signatures, but nothing that grabbed me and made me amazed.

Good listen

No thank you

This is the highest level flaming lips could hope to achieve. 3 stars!

Favourite song stillness on the move

This did not feel like 2009 and I liked that. Kind of felt like the Beatles in some ways with voice and simplicity. Other songs were a little more complicated but I enjoyed most of these. These are the kinds of albums I'm looking for on this list. New faces.

3.3/5 Best Track: No Intention

I have heard of this band and remember the album cover but had never heard the actual album. I had no idea what my ears would be hearing but somehow the sound met my expectations. This is very experimental rock and there are so many ideas here that I think it could have used more focus. Of course, I guess that's the purpose of experimental rock. A bunch of ideas thrown together. "The Bride" is a great example of this. It starts off with an acoustic guitar, followed by the female vocals, the song speeds up, slows down and then speeds up again at the end. The whole time, the acoustic guitar dominates my ears. I really find albums like this difficult to judge, because highs like "Stillness is a Mood" is countered by "Cannibal Resource" which blasted my ears with sounds I didn't love. So, here I go again...I'll give this a middling grade because I think it belongs in the book due to the nature of the music, but this is also something I would not listen to it again.

I liked a couple of the songs however the majority of the album was chaotic!

Strange and interesting but good sounding! Strong 3, would listen to this again

C'est fou

Strange, but I kind of liked it. Has some decent grooves and the delivery of the lyrics is unique. 3.5/5 Might listen again.

It was fine, but not interesting to me.

Found it frustrating. Kept almost loving it. Then it would just get a bit too abstract and jarring. Almost like a not so good yeasayer! 2.5

They’re okay. Some interesting sounds and melodies. Sound very early 00s indie so surprised they are from 2010. But that tracks so I guess that’s okay. I liked Temecula Sunrise a lot… wonder if they are local?

This probably needed more than one listen but it didn't get it. Nothing grabbed me though it all seemed very workmanlike. Chamber pop.

It was interesting, not quite what I wanna listen to

If I was to pick a sound of 2009 this specific brand of Indie would be it. Dirty Projectors with their fifth outing were able to perfectly encapsulate this Indie/Art Rock sound. Best: Temecula Sunrise Worst: Fluorescent Half Dome 3.5 stars

This was interesting! Hadnt heard of them or seen this album cover. Released in 2009 definitely had me curious. Not really my style of music but overall I enjoyed it!

*Sigh* I wanted to like this album. I really did. And while I can acknowledge its immense creativity and interesting musical choices, I honestly didn’t really enjoy it. I get its experimental. But I feel like sometimes “experimental” is code for “hipster experimental music the artists think is really clever and makes them look smart.” The song titles don’t help with that. (“Cannibal Resource”? “Useful Chamber”? “Fluorescent Half Dome”? What do these mean?) And that’s what this felt like to me. I hate to reduce an album to that. But I just couldn’t really jive with this album. There’s things to like, but I just didn’t get it overall. I don’t really know what else more I can say. It felt like Vampire Weekend’s first album if that album took like, a step further and discarded some of the common conventions of song structure and rhythm. I will not be relistening and I will not seek more of them out unless presented with more through this project. Not bad by any means, but not worth writing home about. 3 stars. Standout tracks: Cannibal Resource, Stillness is the Move, Useful Chamber

Voice is used very much as an instrument in this album. Rollicking and unpredictable, minimalist at times and insane at others. Feels like the car ride across a state line.

Interesting textures and sounds.

Nothing special. But not bad.

I have always had a hard time connecting with this brand of piercingly optimistic, menacingly sweet yet self-important indie. (like jess day). But, this was definitely interesting musically. Damn I wish I could give half stars here.

I’ve mostly known Dirty Projectors from occasionally showing up on Sirius or a Spotify playlist, and have never listened to an album in its entirety. An oversight by me, because I really enjoyed this. Lots of ear candy and creativity throughout. And I appreciate that it’s a brisk 9 track, 40 min album too.

Not unpleasant but a bit jarring at times. I know I won’t seek them out again.

Some decent songs, overall not bad

Generally wasn't easy to listen to for me. The vocals just didn't sound good on top of their music. But I did enjoy some of the instrumental guitar and strings

Out of the gate this reminds me a lot of Animal Collective and Grizzly Bear in its atmosphere. Vocals appear to be deliberately distressed with a shifty instrumental. Pretty cool song, but not something you can really groove to per se. There were a few songs in the middle that stood out a bit more than the rest: Stillness Is The Move and Two Doves. Other than that, this was fine-to-solid indie capturing that late 2000s experimental layering sound. I enjoyed the listen, but it did not call to me in the same way that Vekatimest or Merriweather Post Pavilion did. For that, I would call this a high 3 / 5.

Really nothing to say on this one, didn't grab or hold my attention

Coherent incoherence. At least it was different. But it’s a different i’ve heard quite a bit. Still great.

Better than expected. Quirky

Very modern, switches between lead singers, lived up to my image that of hipsters living in Brooklyn.

Interesting, poppy indie rock. There are some cool sounds and one really weird but fun track, “useful chamber.” Nice to listen to, might listen again.

1. Cannibal Resource - 4.8 - this sounds terrible. innovation isn't always good. 2. Temecula Sunrise - 5.2 - imagine if jazz had none of the pretext. 3. The Bride - 5.6 - the end of this song is listenable. 4. Stillness Is the Move - 8.3 - actually creative and fun. still not my favorite but I can at least understand people liking this. 5. Two Doves - 8.2 - Again, this is great, creative indie pop. I don't know why they decided to start with something so terrible. 6. Useful Chamber - 8.5 - a bit too long, I see the vision. "Bitte Orca" part goes hard 7. No Intention - 7.4 - feels more standard. not as experimental as previous three good songs. 8. Remade Horizon - 8.8 - holy shit, great song. 9. Fluorescent Half Dome - 6.8 - eh. feel like they returned to the beginning of the album.

it's interesting - feels a bit busy at times, like some sounds/instruments are out of sync, but very chill vibes

I’d never heard of this band before. I’ve only listened to the album once. Wacky, to say the least. I love the harmonies. And I love the musicianship. Impossible to categorise. Constantly surprising. Changing approach from song to song, & often within a track - Useful Chamber is a good example. I really enjoyed this.

Just didn’t excite. Couldn’t recall a single song now

This one breezed by like a guava mocktail at a hipster bar

6/10. Unremarkable

Not bad. Sure sounds like they listened to a lot of Flight of the Conchords.

My opening thought was "oh Jesus" but I oddly enjoyed this. There's some weird stuff, obviously, and some mad syncopation and bad drumming but it's art pop and there's space for that in the world. I wouldn't recommend it to a friend, mind.

A decent album, not a huge fan of this overall. I do really like the song No Intention. I don't believe that I will be coming back to this album very often.

Överlag så gillade jag den. Lyfter inte till riktigt bra. Men behaglig.

By "experimental" he means just making sounds and not following the expectations of music. Oh you want singing that follows a rhythmic pattern? too bad. It is still OK, but I'm not really enjoying David's singing.

A bit too experimental and a-musical to my ears.

Quirky indie pop. Has some interesting sounds.

I mean as far as "experimental indie" goes, this is at least music. But there's not much there. This is the kind of thing I don't mind having on in the background because it's pleasant enough but you don't need to pay attention to it.

A real mixed bag of styles and odd, strange songs that are off-beat and sometimes interesting and overall an adventurous listen. There were a number of songs I liked, but also some that were a bit blah. So I like it, but I can't say yet if I love it. This indie "art-rock" band is trying hard to be eclectic and for the most part it succeeds. I'll listen again and more music from the Dirty Projectors and see if the music sustains itself (lasting impression), so maybe I'll have to increase my rating...? Or not.

I like how chaotic the production can feel while still sounding pretty good. His voice/singing style sounds super familiar, but I can't put my finger on why. Overall pretty alright. A high 3/5

It’s fine. Won’t feel the need to revisit it, probably.

As pretentious as it should be in 2009. I think in the last 10/15 years, it's impossible to be "original" (for any sense of this word) without sounding at least a bit pretentious. It doesn't make this album a good one, but it helps to understand and maybe enjoy it more.

An interesting twist to the indie sound of the late 00's, but not something I will want to return to.

Me : Mom, can we have Grizzly Bear? Mom : We have Grizzly Bear at home. Grizzly Bear at home :

A kind of interesting math/art indie pop that has its own sound. A very unique product for 2009. That said, I'm not so appealed to it.

At the very least, this interests me Might take a few more listens for me to properly get it though Favourite tracks: The Bride, Stillness Is the Move, Useful Chamber

Had it’s moments but think it sent me to sleep at one point.

3 stars

Dirty Projectors have always been one of those bands that come up every so often that have some interesting songs. This album is a good example, most of it is mediocre but Stillness Is The Move is a realy standout for me.

Hmmm, I saw another review call this "Captain Beefheart pop" and I think that's spot on. They're deliberately trying to violate as many conventions at once, which makes this a challenging listen. If you're not in the mood to be challenged... well, just look at all the one star reviews! 😆 I gave this two listens and I'm sure with 2 or 4 more I'd really start to grok what they're doing, but honestly I'm not sure it'd repay the effort - I think if I want indie pop in this vein then I probably want friendly welcoming indie pop, not challenging avant weirdness. Fave track - eh..... "Remade Horizon" maybe?

Decent but hardly life-changing indie rock. I definitely preferred the female vocalist to the main guy, wish she had more stuff here. C

The sound definitely reminds me of a certain time in my life, though I’ve never listened to this before.

I actually kind of liked this album. I don’t know why I’m surprised? I think it’s just been a hot minute since I’ve heard something even slightly good. If I had been able to listen to this a couple more times I could even give it a 4, but I think even a 3 is good. 6.5/10 I think.

I've had this one for years and it's a tough one. Not *awful* tough but more of a challenge. I'm not sure how you describe this music - art pop? There were a lot of "this kind" (all different, so that phrase is kinda meaningless) of artists emerging around this time in the Animal Collective, Juliana Barwick, Grizzly Bear melodic-yet-jarringly-odd camp. That's just it - it's impossible to describe; you just have to listen to it. And after ... 20? listens (i hadn't listened to this album in a decade) I still have trouble judging it. It's fascinating, it's different, it's impeccably-crafted, the instrumentation is unique, the arrangement is completely unpredictable. And yet I cannot connect with it. I don't dislike it at all - it's a mood - but it's that connection that I've never been able to make that makes it a touch frustrating. I often wonder if I need hooks or a killer chorus and sometimes that's the case but ... if I can thoroughly immerse myself in a 20+ minute song like Genesis' Supper's Ready which has no hooks or chorus whatsoever then it's not a mandatory prerequisite. Yes, these are the negatives, if they *are* negative. So while it's certainly a challenging album, it does have its rewards. For instance "Two Doves" is lovely. "Useful Chamber" has a fascinating structure - beautiful and delicate interspersed with brief aggression. ...So. After a 2nd consecutive listen today I think an obvious personal sticking point I've missed is this: I don't like David Longstreth's voice. As soon as that light bulb went off I was able to hear this in a new and different way; I'm certain I'd love this album if it were instrumental or if either of the other vocalists (Amber Coffman / Angel Deradoorian) took over instead. This second listen was me focusing on everything *but* his vocals and I liked it so much more. TL;DR: very dense; at times too much so. But with such creative and atypical chord progressions and dynamics, it's really worth a few listens before judging. I hope to not wait another decade before listening again, but also might check out more of Coffman's/Deradoorian's solo work as a result. 6/10 3 stars *also it means nothing but reading an interview w Longstreth only hurt my view of him - slamming older/incredible musical artists and talents was supposed to go out when Cobain shot himself. Bullshit 90s "my music is cooler than yours but i'm pretending not to be cool" attitude that frosted/s me. Makes me hate his voice even more which is absolutely stupid I admit.

Interesting mix of Indie, Soul, Art Pop and a dash of Prog. I like the shorter and concise albums, but this was almost overstaying to me. There were moments I was really into it, especially instrumentally. Vocally it didn't get me that much. 7 out of 10

A very unique and fun listen. The vocals were so beautiful and soothing. I think it reminded me of Oh Wonder?

This album is the result of combining every acclaimed indie album of the 2000s

I had not heard of this band nor had I heard any of their music. It's interesting; kind of indie pop with a little soul added. Personally, I happen to prefer the vocals by Amber and Angel more than those by David, but that's just my own listening experience. The performances by the instrument players are excellent. Overall, this is a very good album and I plan to explore more of their work.

No Intention sounds like lots of squirrels scratching away over piano strings. Occasionally entertaining but mostly unmemorable. It sort of just washed over me.

vet a faen var helt ok

My heart sank when I saw this was the weekend album but actually it wasn’t that bad. Quite a haunting sound but not unpleasant. A surprising 3*

At certain points I understood what they were trying to do....and then I lost it again. Interesting album but left me with a vague sense of annoyance. 5.5/10 Fave track: Two Doves

meh 3*

One of those bands I've heard the name of for over a decade and probably heard them on KEXP a bunch of times but could name one of their songs. Definitely has an aughts indie-rock sound. Not bad.

Interesting vocal play. I hear the Bjork influence. Different. Don’t really like it though.

Interesting sound

Highlights: "Remade Horizon," The Bride," "Two Doves," "Temecula Sunrise" Not a bad idea to take ideas from Captain Beefheart and sweeten the deal with the thing he lacked the most: strong performances of stronger vocal arrangements, especially the dazzling ping-pong counterpoint on "Remade Horizon". You also get swelling strings in daring modern harmonies and lots of glittering guitar hammer-ons and pull-offs reminiscent of Malian blues with a twist of veering chromaticism. The main problem isn't so much Longstreth's strangled goose voice (again, better than Beefheart any day). It's really his lyrical fishtailing between jarringly stupid banality and megalomaniacal pretentiousness. This guy has himself staring into Nietzsche's eyes in the album art but sings stuff like "what hits the spot yeah like Gatorade? you and me baby hitting the spot all night." The name of the album, "bitte orca," repeated throughout the bridge of "Useful Chamber," is just his response to 'cellar door,' a pair of words he champions as being exceptionally beautiful. Please. Also, Amber Coffman's voice is very mainstream on the surface, but regularly becomes unbearably piercing and harsh, like a grotesque of its first impression. Besides the consistently interesting music, this is a good time capsule for the '00s boom in internet-driven college kid pop: the good, the bad, and the ugly.

Inventive, surprising, and almost unlistenable. This album goes out of its way to create extra tension so the resolution feels much more satisfying - I’m not quite sure if that’s a positive quality or not yet. Certainly unique and hard to describe, so it gets a 3/5 for eccentricity.

Fairly average alternative rock album that does nothing to stand out or warrant any place on this list

Kind of experimental indie rock, but the "experimental" part was on the far end of the spectrum. Some songs were straight up unlistenable, with so many tempo changes, erratic vocals, seemingly having nothing to do with the melody and general lack of flow made it a challenge to stick with the album. It had few high moments as well, where the music suddenly clicks and is very enjoyable, unfortunately I doesn't happen too often. Very interesting and original concept, but maybe a bit too complicated for me. Nice attempt, though!

This was good, but didn't really stand out for me as exceptional.

Decent, but I would have to give it another chance to really appreciate it. Having said that, "No Intention" is just wonderful! The album also ended really well, although I will admit this was not a "one sitting" listening experience for me. 3/5

What can I say, average again, but slightly higher average

Too dissonant and experimental to put into my rotation. Pretty at times, though.

Individual songs I liked but as an album is was just okay. I do hear the influences on other albums, though

Has tenets of something that I don't quite know how to describe, but I'm gonna call it hypermusicality - essentially a lot of intricate, accomplished, often quite clean and shiny musical elements layered over one another, that I'm sure to the more classically trained ear are very pleasing, but for me tend to add to less than the sum of their parts (Jacob Collier is a good example). I also find some of the bands vocalisations pretty grating at times - the frequent use of runs, bright harmonies etc. However nothing truly frustrated me, and there's certainly tracks I can see myself liking more if I came back to them. Not gonna make it anywhere near the rotation, but not a write off. Fave track: Two Doves

Some really unique stylings in the indie genre which makes for some really bubbly and fun listening. It is a style that can grow a bit tiresome and sometimes be challenging - I’m not sure if in a good or bad way. Indie music from this period has sometimes aged pretty badly (at least in my head) but I think there’s still some interesting stuff here I like this album overall and think there are a couple bangers for sure. A solid three-and-a-half; I kept tossing back and forth whether to round up or down and gonna just go with this. Shoutout to Stillness is the Move, but favourite track here was No Intention.

When I read "experimental rock band", I was skeptical. This was not difficult to listen to. It's a culmination of stuff that sorta works.

Interesting but some of it is too lacking in melodies/structure, Some good tracks and worth a relisten though

Not what I was expecting. Descent

Pleasant. Fine. Not great.

Not bad, but it didn’t do anything for me.

Good, but nothing that memorable for me in there

Vampire Weekend from Aliexpress

Did not much care for this one too much as a whole. Useful Chamber was the highlight for me. Very much felt the 2009 in it. Vampire Weekend vibes. I also did really love the auto generated Spotify radio for the album a lot so idk why Bitte Orca wasn’t doing it for me :/

I mean it was a little janky at times, but id still say this is an okay album.

This has a certain oddball charm. Clever, disjointed pop sounds with alternatingly pretty and atonal aspects to it. It starts out rough, but improves by the back half. Fave Songs: Two Doves, Useful Chamber, Fluorescent Half Dome, Stillness Is the Move

Listened to on 12/8/22 2.5/5 Favorite song: Temecula sunrise, fluorescent half dome This album was weird - not necessarily a bad weird but also indescribable. I think I liked it overall but very experimental indie rock made the songs a hit or miss

The sound of Pitchfork circa the late 2000s. Does Pitchfork have the same cultural impact and ability to make a band as it did back then? It's kinda interesting in that it's a weird blend of English folk, that Vampire Weekend Afropop sound, David Byrne-esque new wave, and prog rock. I think I was due to see them at a Brisbane festival that got canned. I did see Deradoorian, the band fronted by their ex-singer/guitarist. Was probably the worst attended show I've been to at a Zoo, not helped by being a Sunday night. I do remember her saying they tried to get food but everywhere was shut. Hooray for the "New World City" that is Brisbane.

Missed entirely. Good but not great.

J'ai bien aimé c'était original mais ca s'écoutait super bien. 3.5

Indoe hipster stuff, kind of disjointed.

My first thought about this is: I know I listened to this album about 15 times in 2009 & 2010. But I can't even remember what kind of music this was. It has left no lasting memory at all. And now that I've re-listened to it a couple of times over the last 2 days that feeling hasn't subsided. It's all pleasant music, I don't dislike listening to it. It's clever enough, musically, rhythmically and lyrically. Musically it's in the Indie style I loved back in the day (Yeasayer, TV On The Radio, the whole Brooklyn scene). But it doesn't do anything for me. It's passing me by. And I don't feel I need to listen to this again.

This was the most 2009 Williamsburg album to ever 2009 Williamsburg

4th October 2022 Listened in the day while working from home. Chilled yoga in the evening. Vintage, angular, intelligent 00s indie.

Used to be a fan of this album, but I feel like it's a bit of a chore to listen to now and David Longstreath is a self-righteous prick.

I really love parts of this and then others get too experimental for my tastes and the noise rock aspects are overbearing. "Two Doves" was my favorite song from the album. Overall the bass was very good throughout the album.

I’d heard of Dirty Projectors but never heard their music. Now I have, and I don’t know if I could describe what I heard. Is that good? Regardless, I enjoyed most of it, especially when it came to the syncopated chorale runs.

Indie vibes

A fun, defiant LP that pushes slightly above the crowded 2010s indie scene. There's some excellent guitar work here, and the arrangements are generally chaotic and absorbing without being too abstruse. There is a fair amount of soft-voiced downtempo generic indie filler, however, and even the most interesting tracks suffer a little from lack of editing when they introduce a fun guitar lick... only to repeat it for four minutes into an eventual fade-out. Longer tracks are fine ('Useful Chamber' is one of those sprawling indie anthems that contains worlds within itself and invites endless relistening), but only when there's a fair amount of variety to keep things from getting stale.

Refreshing, eclectic, lovely harmonies. Not a group or style I am that familiar with, so difficult for me to compare it to anything else. But it did sound like Jeff Buckley may have been an influence? Not bad at all

I really enjoyed the mixing of electronics and strings, the male and female vocals. Very experimental and playful. The more electronic songs reminded me a little of Age of Adz by Sufjan Stevens. 3.5

Not super into the songwriting or the vocals, but there are some super interesting production and mixing choices here that make it feel more substantial than a generic indie pop record.

Weird but I liked it

Second Listen. One of the most interesting (in a bizarre way) albums on the list. I don't think any one song stands out, they are all fairly equal to me. I have a favorable opinion of the album this time around, not sure if I think it is worthy of the list, but I enjoyed it. 3/5

Good album, but like most of the post-2000 additions to this list I gotta ask what makes this a must listen? I've never heard of this album or group. Granted when this was released, I had a four year old running around the house. 3.5/5.

I've heard other Dirty Projectors albums before that I've liked better. I want to like this one, but it's a little too discordant for me to totally get on board withh

Interesante, bueno

Unexpected and easy to listen to.

Tuneyards, anyone?

Pop sin estridencias. Melodías algunas un tanto extrañas. Agradable, pero sin aportar nada

Band name and album art were vaguely familiar but the music was all new to me. Funky fresh, inventive blend of electric, acoustic, orchestral, world music etc. Really picked up momentum at track 4 - would've enjoyed more tracks with the female vocalists. Less exciting second time round once the thrill of the new had worn off, but I still appreciate the creativity.

pretty forgettable

Best Song: Stillness in the Move. Best vocals of the album. Worst Song: Temecula Sunrise. Really don't like the instrumental spasm they do right before the words "Temecula Sunrise". Overall: Fun looping and layered instrumentals that just ultimately wasn't for me.

Upbeat joyous nonsense.

That was fun!

This is pleasant plinky plonk pop but utterly devoid of anything that stands out. I know they are an American band, but it's like listening to bottled Shoreditch at times. Temecula Sunrise is basically 20 songs they didn't know what to do with.
