Reviews (page 12 of 15)

It was....okay, I guess. The songs that everyone knows are the best ones. Nothing else jumped out at me. I still don't really get why people love RHCP so much.

I opened this album thinking I’d give it a 2, but in the end I’m giving it a 3. That’s something, I guess.

Nice, but tired of those ballads The best songs sounds like their older stuff (thats good)

Great album but personally listening to the chilli's for longer than 20 minutes gives me listener fatigue and this album fits that category for me.

Some very pleasant, and some explicit rap

Pretty good for RHCP, some classics, some skips

Good Album, I like some of the songs three stars

obviously very different from the beastie boys, but again this record brings back lots of memories with my dad again. however i prefer red hot chili peppers over the beastie boys. that doesn't mean i'm a fan however, i still am not too fond of them. i was really not in the mood for this today, so i got halfway through. standout song: californication. the popular songs on the album were the best opposed to the b side tracks.

Meh, I remember listening to them in the 90s. Handful of really good songs but most of them all sounds the same and are extremely over played

Not bad

It was ok

when the singles are good and catchy they are very that. but i dont really want to hear this Entire album. also it actually sounds really bad, like this mix is really awful

I loved RHCP growing up, but now I can’t stand Anthony Kiedis’ voice. This band has written some iconic hits in this album but on the whole it is enjoyable due to the tight interlock between Flea and Chad Smith.

Californication (song) is ok, but the rest is just meh.

Oddly, this is an album where I mostly enjoyed the hits...Otherside, Californication. It wanders all over the place, some good, some...meh.

I quite liked the Chilli's back in the day, and I liked this album, back in the day. Fast forward 20+ years... and listening to this album again... well I found it to be 15 tracks, but 13 of them are just repetitive variations of Otherside or Californication. This is still an album I would listen to, but it's just lost that point in time edge of really good enjoyment.

Honestly not my favorite. Has some classics but overall feels messy and a little more grungy than i would want

mag ich nicht

Certainly some bangers on this, but a lot of filler too

It’s RHCP, they are what they are. Does anyone else really sounds like them? I guess I like it but it’s a sound I’ve heard so much it didn’t do much for me.

Lots of variety in song intensity, and has plenty of catchy riffs. Second half does kinda just feel like noise though bumping it down from 4 to 3

Red Hot Chili Peppers has this weird thing were they have a few bangers, and those bangers are really good! The rest of their songs are just not good… they are some kind of off in their non-banger songs

Track 1. Changes in tempo throughout song were abit strange, however chorus was decent 6/10 Track 2. Good song, not much to say 7/10 Track 3. More of a laidback vibe to this one, decent yet again 7/10 Track 4. Catchy chorus, good instrumental 8/10 Track 5. Aggressive, almost hip-hop vibe to the track not a fan, reminds me of nu-metal bands like limp biskit. 5/10 Track 6. Effective critique on the dark side of hollywood aswell as a decent song 7.5/10 Track 7. not much to say, decent 6/10 Track 8. Another slower song with a decent melody 7/10 Track 9. Strange lyrics and title. 5/10 Track 10. Nothing special 5/10 Track 11. Bit better, bit of a lul in the album. Song ended strong though 6/10 Track 12. Again, alright song but not really much to say 6.5/10 Track 13. Nice slow finish to the album, ending on a good note 7/10.

It’s not their best.

They are OK. But not my vibe

You know, I never listened to this whole album before. I knew all the radio releases but never sought it out. Overall it's ok but to me nothing special. The radio releases will make it into a playlist but not the whole album.

Production is bad. Songs are OK as are the performances. What listeners should realize is that this album is where the band became its own genre. Previous Red Hot Chili Peppers records represented the bands unique mix of its influences: hip hop, funk, jazz, blues-rock. Californication is dad rock for guys born in the 1980s. The last song sounds like Elliott Smith.

# 128 : This was good, better than I expected. some good songs on here - well at least the first side, then it Kind of went monotonous... I wouldn't buy this, but I'd probably listen to it again if it came up. Favourite Track : Otherside Listened : 11/12/2023

Honestly was hyped for this album but it didn't really deliver up to expectations.

My third Favourite of Them

John Frusciante's return definitely marked a change in the Chili Peppers' sound. But songs such as "Scar Tissue", "Otherside", "Road Trippin'" and even the big hit, "Californication" all sound very similar. It reminds me of the Aerosmith record that had "Crazy", "Amazing", and "Crying" -- they basically sounded like the same song; SNL even spoofed it. The Peppers aren't quite so bad, but the songs are still slow and too similar (not that there's anything wrong with the slower sound, but when the songs sound a lot a like, the slowness just makes them even more boring). I think it makes sense to have RHCP in the 1001 project, and I realize this was their biggest selling album, but I think Blood Sugar Sex Magick would have sufficed. I might give this 3.5 stars, but definitely no more, and maybe even less, so I'm rounding down. I don't think many people who didn't grow up with this would love it.

this albums feels like stale pizza in the best way possible. it's mediocre in the sense that there's nothing new or wowing about it but nevertheless it's a v solid album. i own a rhcp tshirt and tee is cooler than this but still decent listen. wouldn't come back to it as an entire project but maybe a few songs.

Some hits, mostly misses for me. I guess I'm not the biggest fan

The five singles in the first half kind of feel like poor sequencing (or premature ejaculation, if you want a sexual analogy). We all know these songs, they are fine songs, but not great songs. The remaining ten songs are decent enough, no real clunkers, they just lack the hooks of the singles. Guitar and bass playing is top notch throughout, singing is alright, lyrics are generally bad. Like the Hollywood culture this is aiming to criticize, the album is mostly vapid.

I used to listen to the Red Hot Chili Peppers quite a bit when I was in high school and college, but this is my first time listening to this album from start to finish. I remember this album being a pretty big deal when it came out, since it marked John Frusciante's return to the band. Twenty four years later though, I think this album is pretty middle of the road. The Chili Peppers tried to go in a more serious direction lyrically and a more melodic direction musically, and in my opinion, the results are pretty mixed. The shift in tone and melody have some small wins in "Scar Tissue," "Otherside," and "Californication," but even those wins are deflated some by some nonsensical lyrics and Anthony Kiedis's vocals. My favorite songs were when the band didn't take themselves too seriously, like on "Around the World," "Get on Top," and "Right on Time." The best thing that this album has going for it is the return of Frusciante's guitar playing, coupled with Flea's funky bass licks. I don't know if it's because I've been so inundated with their music for most of my life, or if because this album is just objectively 'meh,' but Californication just fell flat with me.

Who hasn't heard of the Red Hot Chili Peppers? To be honest, I grew up listening to this record, when I was a young skater punk.. I haven't given RHCP a serious listen in awhile, but after revisiting this album and listening to Anthony's lyrics man.. There are some amazing songs in this album. I won't go too into detail over this album, or the next few reviews I do, as I have been out of town the past few days and need to catch up BUT I really loved 'Parallel Universe' was just this plucky funky lil diddy that I just loved, 'Get on Top' had this fun manic punk sound and was all about fucking, obviously 'Californication' holds up and the lyrics are still so good but I think my personal favorite track on this album has to be 'Easily' I just loved the sound and feel of this song. Overall: 3.3/5

Undeniably iconic with a few great songs on it. I was tired of it by the last few tracks, the style feels dated (duh). I was also a bit surprised that I still remembered most of the songs, I think this was one of the first albums I had on my iTouch back in the day. I'd be curious to know how I'd like it now if this was the first time I'd ever heard it.

Soft-rock-funk. Meh! Don't see what all the fuss is about.

Ding, dang, dong, dong, deng, deng, dong, dong, ding, dang

I don't like rap sorry

Red hot chili peppers would be so much better if literally anyone else was the lead singer. Flea, john, and chad are all arguable GOATs of their respective instruments.

Rick Rubin will burn in hell for what he did to audio recording standards. Some great pop songs and performances on this one, aside from the lead vocals Aside from the hits, Porcelain and Emit Remmus are standouts. 3.5 stars

Repetitive, a bit boring. Was overplayed on MTV when it was released.

AJ: when it first came out I loved it. Wrote lyrics in my notebook and everything. They’ve lost some shine in my life but some of their songs mean a lot to me. Including a few on here.

divertido, mucho bass pero en la 15ava cancion ya es como estar escuchando all the same.

mmm ta okei 6/10 no me gusta los "antonio y los mas picantes" xd

Some okay music. Didn't hear the lyrics much. No new gems were revealed from this full album listening. The best stuff is played endlessly on the radio already. I guess the lead singer is hot. And I like the bass lines a lot.

Some absolute classics, but some rubbish on here as well.

not bad

3/5 Good for it’s fine but I’ve hard so much it’s tough to get through it

Surprised by how may songs I knew off this album, having never listening to it in full before. Overall, the album is okay, some of the songs I have never heard before were not the best, and the bands struggle to keep its funk roots alive while also making pop music is prevalent. Some lyrics are weird, or even nonsensical, but the album is fun and light. 3/5 Might listen to the hits again

It was probably the timing of this album being right in line with my adolescence, but I've always found this to be the most listenable RHCP album out there. It's a bit long, perhaps a bit formulaic, but I think there's a nice variety of songs. Unfortunately it seems to suffer from a lack of depth - this is the peak of commercial Peppers.

Great album, kinda felt like I was just listening to one long song tho.

Too busy. Heard so many times, doesn't inspire me anymore.

Too many annoying songs, I do not like dirt.

think this where the Chili Peppers started the slide into dad rock/adult contemporary. The funky song to ballad ratio is off compared to other albums, like they fell into the Under the Bridge aesthetic. The singles are damn catchy though. And I recognize that we all mellow as we age; God knows I have. But this is not the dangerous Peppers of earlier days

Eh it's a good album but red hot is not my favorite in general. One of there better ones though.

Hyped, but not my taste

I'm getting a little bored with this site. Some picks aren't even good albums but compilations of good artists. Some others are just very popular albums that aged poorly. I think this is just the case. (I don't like numeric ratings, I give 3 to anyone)

Not bad. Didnt know they had that softer side.

This album is very good and an interesting snapshot of some musical trends from California in the last years of the nineties. This is the best lineup of the band, without qualification and the most vital and tight thing they produced together. John Frusciante is the perfect partner for Flea -- the heart of the band on bass -- to the point where it's often difficult to tell their parts from one another. They are capable of such utter fluidity together as to justify the worth of rock and roll entirely. Chad Smith is a great compliment and support to them on drums, filling out any style they flit to, even briefly. Never obtrusive; always solid. In a band with wild flights of goofy fancy, Smith remains a stable platform from which the others can launch. And then there's lead singer and lyricist, Anthony Kiedis. I'll paraphrase Lester Bangs for this: Anthony Kiedis is a drunken buffoon posing as a poet. Songs like Californication and Scar Tissue are genuine contributions to the modern canon, but his unseriousness as a musician, his frequently silly but uninteresting lyrical choices and his generally lackadaisical affect all hold back not only him but the entire group. The frustrating part about Kiedis is that the great songs suggest there is so much more there. Worth a listen or ten, but this isn't the best music produced in the 90s.

Did you know these guys are from California?

This started off hit after hit and then kinda just faded.

I was familiar with a lot of these songs, so I was looking forward to hearing it. I liked the mix and it was nice to hear the tiny imprecision of people actually playing their instruments. By the end of the album though I was ready to move on. Some lyrics don't age well for me in 2023. A lot of hits on this album though.

Top Songs: 1) Californication 2) Around the World 3) Otherside 4) Savior

First album, but seemed like a good amount of stylistic variety

Meh, some classics but dull album trakvs

It was pretty good. I won't seek it out, but if it is on, I won't shut it off.

Too long and the singles are markedly better than the rest. Still, can’t beat those California vibes.

Some classic singles and a lot of filler.

This whole record was conflicting to me, because there were so many elements I either hated, or liked. For what I liked, it was mostly thanks to Flea and Chad Smith. Together these two make for a hell of a rhythm section, Flea especially and it was fun as heck to really listen to how good he is for an entire album considering I rarely listened to RHCP prior to this. Some songs were highlights, Californication is a classic, loved the energy and vibe Get on Top had, and the cool laid back nature of Road Trippin was also quite enjoyable. On the flip side, I thought a lot of these songs kinda felt like B-sides in a way, especially some of the album tracks. I did not really care for a lot of Anthony Kiedis' vocals throughout, his singing style is just not something I really like at all. But the worst thing for me might have been the production, which felt like all of the elements of each song were just amplified too much to where it felt distracting, similar to the problem of specific albums and the loudness war. I think I enjoyed enough to give this a three.

Quite a few iconic songs on this. Didn’t really love the rest, but did enjoy the song Road Trippin.

This album is overrated. Songs are just ok, very similar, nothing groundbreaking.

3 good songs A few dings were hard to get through. Lots of crazy weird hi pitched guitar sounds.

Favorieten: Parallel Universe, Californication, Road Trippin

Some albums, even some great albums, from the 90s sound like they are definitely from the 90s. This is more timeless.

I listened to this as I walked to coop and it was okay --an album that I ahve never really connected to, but there were a few songs that I really enjoyed! Some awful cheap rhymes tho hahahah

So many singles, I forget about tracks like Road Trippin and I Like Dirt

Favorite Tracks: Around the World, Parallel Universe, Scar Tissue, Otherside, Get On Top, Californication, Easily, Porcelain, This Velvet Grove, Road Trippin'

There were some smash hits on this one for sure. I don’t find they added much to the sound they had years earlier on Blood Sugar…

They are a really good band (besides kiedis) but idk it just doesn’t do much for me. It gets a little boring/annoying at times. So much better than a lot of stuff on this list

Just such an average album that seems to lack any real spark.

Såen ca det gennemsnitlige

Not their best, but a few classics make it a strong album

Listened to this loads when it came out. Relistening now, I'm still enjoying the music - lyrics are as cliché as ever. First half is funky good, second half meh. 3.5

it all kinda blurs together after a while

Rating based on the album quality and not Kiedis-creep level.

Listened Before? Y Half of this album is unlistenable for me. It is not the Chili Pepps' fault, though. It's mainstream rock radio playing all the singles from this one directly into the ground, and then playing them some more. If I have to hear the title track one more time my head may explode! That being said, it's a good album and I'll rate it fairly. Added to Library? N Songs added to playlist: Around the World

good instrumentation, annoying voice and vocals

Just ok

Kindle mid but its definitely not bad so 3/5

They have a sound and it’s unique to them. I like the basics - and the sound and bass/lead interplay are great. It’s just overall it kind of repeats itself. Has some great tunes but not the whole deal.

weak 3. i like dirt best song.

a lot of good songs, but way too tonally inconsistent

I should like this more but I don't. Great pieces of music though

I was pretty bored with this album. I feel very neutral about it but I definitely know I won't be seeking it out.

Classic

I like the guitar and bass work, pretty boppy in places. But I don't care for the lyrics or vocalese.

I don't like saying this but it was actually kinda good. but they have a habit of adding really stupid elements to the songs which drag it down

Disappointed with it, I love John, flea and Chet but that band as a whole I don’t like, the songs are not that interesting one the whole rap rock thing is not that great here

My first album on this list was a RHCP album and shortly after that was an offspring album. Knowing what I do now and what comprises most of this list I will say I underrated both album. This is the RHCP redemption album. In this list and in their actual discography. Californication is a much more chill/poppy album that still delivers hits and deeper cuts. I enjoyed this album quite a bit and would revisit most of the songs. RHCP weren’t as cool in the 00s as they were in the 90s but I feel they are still a solid band that have made some memorable and important music over the years. 7.2/10

I think almost every dude had a phase where they were really into this album. Well, almost every dude. I never could quite get with it much. Like, it has a buncha "good tracks" but they all feel a bit lackluster in the end, it could be something really great but they wanted to stay a bit too safe and commercial. So, it's just average for me.

Great hits, boring deep tracks. I usually don't like the songs where Kiedis raps instead of singing.

Mostly good, but loses a point for round the world

It seems kind of uncool to give this album a good review but it's hard to deny that it sounds unique and has some pretty catchy songs, particularly the singles. It really does seem like it's captures a time and place (California/America just before the turn of the century) perfectly. I might not seek this one out myself but definitely wouldn't mind listening to it again.

RHCP is one of those bands that I feel like I should have gotten into in middle school or high school, but that's not to say that they're a juvenile or amateur band. I really have no problems with this album, other than a complete lack of personal connection to it. There's a lot of good grooves on here and the sound is pretty tight, but to me, this is just a bunch of middle of the road funky alternative rock. Hoping to one day understand what the hype is all about. Worth listening again? I don't see why not Initial rating: 3/5 (I like it)

Definitely had some timeless summery songs, but odd lyrics and out of place tracks hold the album back

I've had an odd on-and-off, hot-and-cold response to the Red Hot Chili Peppers' music over the decades. At times, I don't like the sound overall and find the rap-style delivery of the lyrics by Anthony Kiedis to grate on me. Other times, I hear incredible musicianship in the performances. John Frusciante is an amazing guitarist to my ear, blending so many influences and styles into his own sound, and Flea and Chad Smith groove superbly well. All I can say is this leads me to the same places I usually find myself when it comes to experiencing any art in any form; that is, much as my human mind has its tendency to want to categorize things, label them as "good" or "bad", and so on, I don't have to. I'll experience their music, this album, and any art as I experience it, and there is an infinite universe of possibilities in that act alone. Plenty for this clumsy bumbling human to work with. Today, I enjoyed most of the tracks. I hear such strong musical performances. At times, it got a little too intense for me, but that's all mood-dependent and I know at other times I've welcomed the high energy of some of the songs. And, yeah, at times I've had to pause it for a bit because Kiedis' vocal delivery was a bit much. Overall, though, some really solid music here.

Flere klassiske låter.

RHCP are a favorite. Flea is supreme on bass. Lyrics are thoughtful. 3 stars. Good but not great.

Favorite song: “Otherside”. Overall, it was better than I expected, even though the occasional rapping really didn’t work.

Overinflated score for childhood nostalgia

I honestly don’t get the hype around this album. The funk tones of the bass is good, Anthony Keidis’ voice is okay, but nothing really stood out to me. Despite saying that, the rhythm section was fire. Favorite songs: Scar Tissue, Californication, Porcelain, and Savior.

It gets good and slips into not so good. Never bad, as such. Just very unspecial. I like the sound musically. But there’s just something about it that isn’t right. I want to give it a 2.5, right down the middle

I'm not much of a Chili Peppers fan. This was certainly better than most of the punk stuff earlier in my list, but not worth another listen.

a couple good songs, a couple bad songs, and a lot of okay songs. i didn’t like when everything was super distorted

look, the funk tracks on this album are detractors, sometimes they work, but often its just abrupt between cool riff indie adjacent guitar rock. flea gonna flea. his basslines work well in smart alt rock format as well as slappity doo da daying on their funk shit. the drummer has it. he drives frusciantes guitar and keeps a menacing pace and energy. however, it just feels overloaded with tracks that dont belong. kiedis lyrics are as dumb as ever “look at my spoken word gobbledeegook, im smart” nonsense. but thats what hes known for. so you get what you pay for. this is their album for a new generation and it mosty works. good for them.

Pretty shallow stuff, but it has its moments. Catchy, too. Standout Tracks: Parallel Universe, Scar Tissue, Purple Stain

This was pretty good.

Californication is the seventh album by the American rock band Red Hot Chili Peppers and is the band's most commercially successful - being certified 7x platinum in the US. This alternative rock album was softer and more melodic than their previous albums, showing an evolution of the band. The album's singles - especially its title track - were part of the reason behind the explosion in popularity because they were played so much on the radio. This is an awesome alt-rock album that marked a comeback for the Red Hot Chili Peppers. It's even a little nostalgic for me since the album came out during my childhood. Great music, band, and album. The RHCP need to release another album like this!

The first part is full of hits but the second is just not as good. But it’s still some good stuff.

Surprisingly didn't hate it. I'm not gonna buy it, but it wasn't offensive. I could go the rest of my life without hearing Get on Top and Californication ever again though. Clearly, they had stepped firmly into their elder classic rock statesman role at this point.

Absolute filth

Despite being a ‘hard rockin band’, RHCP best songs are the soft ones. Sot Parallel universe Scar tissue Otherside Californication Porcelain Road trippin 3.5/5

There was a time when I would have given this a 4, and maybe even a 5. But I've grown to find the sound of Anthony Kiedis' voice difficult to handle, especially when the lyrics it's conveying are at the level they are at. That said, RHCP will always be sorta fun. The musicianship is pretty fantastic, and I've gotta appreciate a mainstream funk act. This album is front-loaded with a lot of singles and other popular cuts, but I think "Scar Tissue" and the closer "Road Trippin'" are the only two songs I can still enjoy without rolling my eyes just a little bit. Don't get me wrong, it's still one of their better albums -- top 5 for sure. But the good stuff here has been overplayed.

Hoo boy, another pile of OK. Not to mention another instance of reflecting on teenager me and inquiring to him "what was wrong with you?" While yes, there are still a couple of songs on this outing that I enjoy (namely "Scar Tissue" and "Otherside"), and recognize that Frusciante, Flea, and Chad Smith are talented musicians, Anthony Kiedis is the anti-X factor. Bluntly put, I cannot stand his herky-jerky brand of talk-singing, especially for over 50 minutes. Californication is absurdly uneven in quality, and it unloads mostly all of the choice numbers into the first half and seems to go on forever, with the passable closer "Road Trippin'" signifying the end. I didn't particularly enjoy listening to this for the first time in full since the early college days. Didn't loathe it either. I'd give it 2.5 stars if possible, but rounding up for the musicianship.

Better than the other chili peppers album...but bailed about half way through. Just a lot of the same sound

The lyrics are really indirect. I always assumed i knew what Californication was about, and that it was painfully obvious. Some of these songs might not mean anything but create a vibe. They're certainly about something. The mixture of rapping and singing does feel very 90s california. Like the melodies themselves are part of speech. Some good grooves in here. I like Easily and Scar Tissue best. These are just rock bops. Easy to jam to. Driving and moving forward. Some fun bass stuff in here. None of the lyrical imagery grabs me well. So many lines feel unhinged from the line before them. They're not taking the time to build a scene or story. They create a feeling or a sense of what the song is about.

One of the biggest albums of my teenage years. Didn’t like it much then, don’t like it much now either.

I had to listen to this three times to solidify my rating. I was never into the Chili Peppers, but this exceeded my expectations, which was admittedly not very high, however, that's beside the point. I was this close to giving it a 4, but it really didn't impress me that much and it kind of fell off towards the end. And the only songs I'll probably come back to are 'Scar Tissue' and 'Otherside', so the lack of nuance there should speak for itself.

Favorite songs were Scar Tissue and Quixoticelixer, get why daniel likes RHCP but not my favorite thing I’ve ever listened to, also I Like Dirt is a crazy thesis statement for a song to have and honestly I respect that

Bing-a-bong-a-bong-a-bong Burbank Gigga gigga, gigga gigga-Glendale

Never been able to get into the peppers. I find their swings between quasi-rap and super mellow to be disorienting. Clearly talented musicians and capable of writing good songs, but other than the hits there’s very little in this album that I’d like to revisit. High 3.

This is an album with a bit of an identity crisis. Musically it is less freewheeling and energetic than RHCPs earlier albums, but you can also see how the band is trying to mature into a more refined sound. When it works, it's fire. Like the first half, which boasts several exceptional singles. The rest of the album meanders a bit and is uneven in quality and tone. The lyrics range from surprisingly introspective and honest to inanely horny. For such a vibrant and talented group of musicians, I would have hoped to see a stronger album from them at this point in their career. Fave Songs: Scar Tissue, Otherside, Californication, This Velvet Glove, Easily

I heard it enough as a teenager. Didn't need to relive.

That was a show

A couple of fantastic singles but not consistently outstanding

Strong tracks. Muddy mix.

good and nostalgic but v long

I knew should be brillian and all, but I find it quite boring.

A few good songs here. Not amazing. Just a perfect 3/5, nothing more or less.

For all the new bands and music this project has given me, it has also taught me that some of the music I used to like isn't quite as great as I remember. The hits on Californication still hit but otherwise the album is merely fine, or honestly markedly less than fine in places. Extra star for nostalgia value.

I only like RHCP in small doses and they get repetitive *really* quickly, so Californication has a tough job to tread a fine line and make me like it more than tolerate it. Kiedis' voice and delivery is irritating but it works selectively; Scar Tissue, the title track, Easily, and not really all that often. The back half of the album is poor, the first half holds it up just enough to get a 3 but they're really a marmite sort of band.

First half of this album is really really good (although part of that is probably nostalgia from when I listened to it a lot as a teenager). It's so catchy, mix of some classic indie and more funky stuff, very easy to listen to. Unfortunately, the second half of the album really brings it down; there's nothing there really worth listening to after track 7 (out of 15), which brings my rating down to a 3.

Musically it's pretty great, but that voice and those lyrics really bring the whole thing down.

Big hits. Admittedly, the first half (minus Get on Top) is great, but the album takes a DEEP nosedive after the title track. The Red Hot are just incapable of making an album that is good from beginning to end. This isn't an exception. Great singles though.

Few hits help them gain their popularity, but does good singles make a ''album you got to hear before you die''..

I know, I know for sure Ding, dang, dong, dong, deng, deng, dong, dong, ding, dang

The opening of this album is honestly dynamite, hard to square with my discovered-but-avowed hatred of the Peppers. Some of it's familiarity, as proved by significant sag in the middle. But the band manages to close things out strong. It's pop music, highly of the time and fifteen minutes too long but worth knowing. Intentional listening wasn't too much worse than radio osmosis.

I enjoyed today's album, it had a nice relaxed ending as well

There are some fun hits on this album, and overall, I think was a more mature effort than previous RHCP albums. In my opinion, it has not aged particularly well, however. Another reviewer mentioned the fidelity being terrible, and although I don't remember noticing it at the time, I agree it's a fuzzy mess! And not in a cool lo-fi way. It must have been less noticeable when hearing these songs on the radio in my old 1972 VW bug, flying down the freeway with the windows open ... There are some fun, even good, tracks on this album, especially in the first half, but the second half is boring and unmemorable at least until the last track. It hasn't held up super well over the decades, and what felt subversive in 1999 now feels obnoxious and crude to my (older, more matronly) ears (clutch pearls, lol). Still, I have fond memories, so 3/5.

This album is pretty solid overall, some of the lyrics are a bit goofy, the title track is overplayed/overrated, and I wish it was a little funkier. But despite all that it's got some good singles and a couple good deep cuts. I wouldn't necessarily listen to it in full again, but there are good nuggets here. I dont know why it's become so trendy to hate o this band. There's much better targets for ridicule.

I can take RHCP in small doses. I was quite ready for the album to end a third of the way through. Up to then I was quite invigorated and then I just got an attack of the tediums. Happy to listen to the singles if they appear on the radio. But a whole album is too much. I like the Road Trippin’ song.

Californication. Good, occasionally poor. Around the World, 2 to gale 3, Scar Tissue increasing severe gale 4. Rough or very rough, later. Rain, thundery showers. Road Trippin' Moderate, remainder of album occasionally very poor.

A good album. Frusciante is fantastic, and flea is in great form on this - Kiedis for me is still a cripplingly weak link for the Chillis, and were it not for him this album could potentially be something special

I like the funkier stuff on this album, but to be honest, songs like “Californication”, or “Other Side” fall into the same category as “Jump” or “We Are The Champions”: I’ve heard it so many times on the radio that I no longer feel any joy or positive connection to the song.

I can’t stand the red hot chili peppers

I like a few here, but then a lot of them seem kinda samey.

Two songs already liked on Spotify before listening (Scar Tissue and Californication). Know a few will be liked for sure, like Around the World, Parallel Universe, Otherside and Get on Top. Feels like after the first 6 songs the rest of the album is a write off (except Road Trippin’) Purple Stain would have been better as an instrumental Disliked: Right on Time Hated: I Like Dirt Great band with a terrible frontman

Ehh.. I don't hate it but I don't love it. Like the other RHCP album, it's fine. The good songs are good the bad songs are bad. The album is quite one note and too long and by the 10th song they clearly ran out of ideas. Besides Californication I've already forgotten all the songs. At least it isn't offensively bad like some other albums.

Trudde eg skulle lika da litt mindre

It's hard to review an album you've never heard but heard almost half the songs a million times growing up on the radio. Moving away from their funk sound, these songs appeal to the mainstream audience, with pop structures that align with the dominant alt rock style of the time. Now, I will say I really enjoyed most of the tracks and has a ton of replayability. It's loud and energetic with memorable moments, especially during its most chaotic and melancholic moments. But where I believe this album falls apart is in its production and track ordering. Just like Oasis, this album favors loudness over quality. There's such a large emphasis on the vocals and lead guitar that everything else, especially the drums, sound muddled and often barely recognizable. This is mostly due to the high compression. All the instruments suffer from a fizzy effect which cause it to sound distorted, and combined with the high volume can cause an uncomfortable harshness, especially during the choruses. Another major problem is the sharpness of the cuts between clips, which are really annoying and bothersome one you notice them. From what I hear, most of these problems cannot be fixed by mastering, and so we're stuck with most of these problems, but fortunately due to modern techniques in streaming, they sound a bit better (at least what I'm hearing with Spotify). As for the track ordering, they attempt to put all the massive hits toward the front, and the rest seem to be randomly dispersed. Due to the range of moods and loudness, going from track to track feels conflicting and makes the record sound overall incoherent. The first 4 tracks are fine, but then the mindless dance punk "Get on Top" is placed between two introspective ballads. We get to a fun jam track "Easily" to the dream pop "Porcelain" (sounds straight from Mellon Collie) back to the grungy "Emit Remmus." It continues like this to the very end, and it just feels like a compilation. Despite all, the standalone compositions are amazing, beautiful, and unique, and it is unfortunate to say this is the lowest score I've given where I really enjoyed almost all the songs, even the bonus tracks. There's dream pop in "Porcelain", hip hop in "Purple Stain", disco in "Right on Time", baroque pop in "Road Trippin", and I already mentioned the punk, grunge, and pop rock tracks, making it a very diverse and memorable listen.

classic

FIRST OF ALL mr. flea on the bass??????????/// no further comments ur honour

Really inconsistent albums a lot of the songs are really fun and groovy and then sometimes it deng ding dong dong ding ding and then there's some questionable mixing/production on a lot of the tracks where it's just weirdly loud.

They polarise people don't they! I liked them a lot when I was young - and there are some nice passages here. I can understand the criticisms but aren't going to join in the pile-on

Notes trial, good album

It brings back a million memories of a summer when I was coming of age and weed was plentiful. It's a good album, the last of their imperial phase from Blood Sugar Sex Magic to this, but the warning signs of the bloat and blandness to come are here too. Still, you can't argue with Scar Tissue and Around the World. Hey, did you know they're from California?

As others have said, the first 6 songs + Road Trippin' are pretty good (some of these I even put on voluntarily!), but then the rest of the album all blends together in meh-ness. What are you left with? 3 stars, I guess.

Red Hot Chilli Peppers is a good band. I like "Scar Tissue".

Opening track, Kiedis annoying with his plain-spoken verses with little accompaniment. Like how bass-forward the album is, particularly Scar Tissue and Get On Top. Californication is a great song, well put together. Easily felt messy coming off the back of 4 great songs, but followed up by Porcelain which is a nice reprieve from the album so far. Not a fan of Emit Remmus, lyricism of "animal of California" felt awkward. I Like Dirt was fun and very bass forward, This Velvet Glove and Savior felt forgettable. Purple Stain is funky as hell, probably my favourite song on the album, feels very Hendrix.

Overall solid album. Though it contained many of the classic RHCP songs that I knew from the radio, it's not an album that I'd put on from start to finish. Besides those poppier radio-friendly tracks and a few of the classic-style hard funk tracks later on, the remaining tracks were pretty forgettable. Could have been a really tight, short album maybe.

Identifying the Red Hot Chili Peppers : It’s the Red Hot Chili Peppers

Love-Hate relationship with RHCP. Some great songs followed by all just more of the same. Starting with this album. Inoffensive but unremarkable. I actually find Stadium Arcadium the most interesting post One Red Hot Minute album other than the 2 hour length.

a couple of good hits but Im not a huge fan of their sound

I have this game where I try to figure out how a release from the past will be received today. If it is d genuine classic or not. No idea where californication as a whole would land. Good listening fun though

I can't quite put my finger on what it is about this band I don't enjoy. I appreciate their honesty, but something leaves me flat with this band. As in the case of "Otherside" — I was thinking, "hey, this is a really nice tune," but before the song was over, I was less smitten. Kind of emblematic of how I feel about the RHCP. There are plenty of great moments, and while Anthony Kiedis is a singular presence as a vocalist (and Flea as a bassist), I prefer him when he goes with a "less is more" approach, and that's not usually his style. I also wasn't knocked out by the guitar work. I guess this is just not a band I love. I've had bandmates (bassists, specifically) who love this band, and they've been on my radar from early on (1985's Freaky Styley), but I've never been drawn in. I like them on a song-by-song basis, but not enough to go all in.

Liked some, not so much the rest

This album was such a commercial success I was very familiar with several tracks. I still find the melody of Otherside to be very catchy or ear-wormy anyway. But overall, I’ll not that enamored of this effort. It certainly has plenty of Flea-driven funk and all that but I guess for me it just starts to sound like the RHCP formula at work. I don’t know. Just not as much a fan of this album as of some others.

Some genuinely good stuff on here. Bits I’m not into as well. Dunno if just the Apple Music mastering but wildly different volumes across a couple of tracks.

rhp is hit and miss for me, and this album is more miss than hit. this album could have been half the tracks and under 30m. after easily, you can smash skip until "right on time". i'm not mad at californication being a hit, but it's sooooo long, and for what? my ★★★★☆ cut of this album: Around the World Parallel Universe Scar Tissue Otherside Get on Top Easily Right on Time Road Trippin'

Half good songs. Half lame funk rap. Just buy a greatest hits to avoid the dross.

I think everyone has heard this. This was probably the last album of theirs I truly enjoyed. Full of great songs.

First time of listening to whole album. Enjoyed but not a convert.

I've always had mixed feelings about the Chili Peppers. I feel like I should like them more than I do, but I find it difficult to care about them at all. I feel the same way about he Eagles - like the the whole is less than the sum of its parts. Like, Anthony is a great front man, Flea's amazing, John (and Navarro before him) are solid rock guitarists - but, still, I get bored listening to them after a while. All that to say, this album is probably their best and deserving of being on the list. Unique, recognizable sound that's solidly executed. Put any one of these songs on and I'm rocking out right along with them. Put 2 or more on in a row and I'll zone out.

Some of RHCP’s better work, but its appeal is still limited.

En vrai pas fou fou hein

There are some pretty good songs here but it's about 25 minutes too long

It's more of the same RHCP you know and love, some good some not. Lots of radio hits here, but deeper cuts like Savior are a really pleasant listen. I'm not a huge fan, but it gets the job done.

It's kinda fun but also grating. 6/10

For the most part, a pretty average alternative album, though I enjoyed some of the songs. Didn't appreciate the hip-hop/rap bits in a couple of the songs either.

Best Song: Parallel Universe. Not a full ballad but still slow enough that Kiedis needs to sing, not rap, which I prefer. Also a track that didn't reach the stratospheric heights of the other singles here, so it doesn't feel so overplayed. Worst Song: Porcelain. Why include such a slow, lullaby-style song in the middle of the album? Overall: No one else sounds at all close to how the RHCP sound, but sometimes they don't sound all that good. Despite Kiedis not having a conventionally strong singing voice, I really prefer his singing to the kind of staccato, Beastie Boys-esque rapping that he favours. Although I was a bigger fan of them when I was younger, listening to them now I can't help but feel like they are the musical equivalent of the TV show 'Friends': difficult to hate (unless you're outright trying to be contrarian), but also so strongly of an era that they become less relevant with each passing year.

I propose cutting this album down to tracks 1-7 plus Road Trippin’. There’s too much uninspired sounding filler in between. I would rate that album one star more…addition by subtraction.

3 20+ years later and still not feeling this is somehow their best, notorious as it is for the start of the Loudness Wars in mastering. BSSM and Mother's Milk are so much better. So much padding. It ends well, though... Even so would not miss it for another twenty years.

I use to like the Chili Peppers, Mother's Milk was pretty good, they were funky, edgy and different than most of the stuff on the radio or MTV and they put on amazing live shows. But something happens when you sell a gazillion copies of a record, chart high on the charts and attract the attention of celebrities and a mainstream following of teenage girls and loser hipsters. They're live shows are probably still a spectacle with the help of a much bigger budget and same with their music, big budget, accessible radio-friendly music so another bazillion people can stream it on Spotify or whatever. Kind of makes me sad...

The slippery down slope of a great band. At least it made them some greenbacks

When a legit album starts to sound a lot like a parody of the band, you have to worry for the direction the band are taking. Kiedis’ lyrics are frequently gibberish (sometimes literal gibberish) and the man has nothing to say- all non sequiturs and Dr Seuss rhyming and A level poetry) and renders the whole project a disappointment, despite the talents of Frusciante and Flea. That isn’t to say there aren’t highlights and a lot of it is catchy but for a band with our attention they sure waste an opportunity.

Strong 3, I see the appeal

I knew most of the songs on this because it was so big at the time. Not my thing but I listened start to finish in the cat or the freeway. Enjoyed it but don’t love it.

3/5 nice but not enough.

The guitar riffs are great, the bassplay is amazing, the lyrics are as non-sensical as always. But the whole thing is flat. From production to songwriting, it's safe and a bit empty.

So played out right now

Disappointed

On kyllä kiimaisia äijiä :D Tykkäsin tästä enemmän kuin Blood Sugar Sex Magicista, mutta ehkä jätän silti 3/5. Letkeetä ja onneks muitakin ok biisejä ku loppuun saakka kulutettu nimikko, jota en oo jaksanu moneen vuoteen.

A very good, but very… long record.

Californication by Red Hot Chili Peppers (1999) Incorporating elements of hip hop, prog rock, and funk, this album seems designed to broaden the commercial appeal of the Red Hot Chili Peppers’ well established and diverse musical explorations of sex, drugs and rock ‘n roll. I can imagine that some diehard fans of RHCP’s earlier work might have been disappointed in this development. Anthony Kiedis’ squeaky but clean lead vocals are layered over good, elaborate rock arrangements. Guitarist John Frusciante returns to the RHCP lineup, after a hiatus from 1992-1998 (during which time he had been replaced by Dave Navarro, formerly of Jane’s Addiction). This fundamental change has made a great impact on the sound of Californication. What we get is more mellow, with a predominance of relatively soft grooves—a suitable accompaniment to the widely referential and geographically diverse lyrics, but I’m not sure it improves the art. Solid and melodic bass lines by Flea, and splashy cymbal-heavy drum work by Chad Smith provide musical quality and sonic texture. The album’s diversity sustains interest, but the variety seems aimless. The track “Savior” could be interpreted in a way that inspires thought, but it falls short due to exaggerated ambiguity lack of depth. The sound of the closing track “Road Trippin’” is refreshing, with acoustic stylings and accompanying string ensemble. It almost makes the serious listener want to start the album over again. Almost. It’s good background music, but none of the tracks stand out as immediately gripping (with the possible exception of “I Like Dirt”, which is quite entertaining, with its funky wah-guitar stylings toward the end). I think if one listened to this album a dozen times one could grow to love it, but on first listen, it’s not top shelf. Am I the only one who thinks it’s too long? 3/5

I understand why this album was so popular, but it's just not for me. The songs are good and funky, but end up sounding the same. Some cool bass lines and good melodies.

Starts strong, but loses steam after the title track, and only returns to form at the last one. Funky and a summery vibe, but lower half drags everything else down with it.

3/01/22

While the return of RHCP's impressive guitarist definitely influenced their turning point album, "Californication", I think the irresistible groove and kicks of it should be credited more on the amazing and now one of my favorite bass player, Flea. And of course, I am expecting the single that boasts that infamous video game themed music video. It's as good as I remember (although "Otherside" is personally better). Aside from being a nice title track, the song "Californication" is also the last great song in the entire album. I could consider the closer "Road Trippin'" decent, but anything between it and the title track is personally monotonous and uninteresting. That is disappointing because as I listen to the first five tracks, I thought that I'll have another five star album. Still, I love the unique funky flavor of it. I get the hype around these guys. But if I would listen to it again, I would stop right after the title track.

I'm old enough to remember when this came out, and was absolutely everywhere, and I absolutely hated it at the time. Listening to the whole album reveals it's not too bad; it has a certain ADHD energy and Kleidis is a surprisingly sharp lyricist. But every song relies on the same formula, which wears a bit thin, and it's far too long.

Classic Chili Peppers. I like the harder funk style of BSSM better, but this is a close second

Some songs aged well, others didn’t. The Album as a whole is a good sum of that era.

A whole different album beyond the singles that have been played to death on alternative rock/mainstream radio. Pleasantly surprised by the more hard-driving uptempo tracks on this one, as they push well beyond what's expected from an RHCP song. The slower, ballad-like tracks come out of left field as well, but balance some of the more indulgent energies on the rest of the LP.

This album started off really strong. If this album ended after 7 songs or so it would probably be a 5 star album. It really dropped off pretty hard after that though. Most of the songs in the second half of the album just felt like uninspired filler. First half - 5 stars, second half - 2 stars. 3.5 total.

First half is an 8/10, second half is a 5/10.

Entertaining

A bit long. 3,5/5

De va bättre än ja trodde

Shout out to everyone in the band that isn’t Anthony Keidis… he’s not even that bad

För långt och Anthony Kiedies stinker FR! Dock mycket fler legit bra låtar än på blood sugar sex magik.

Listening to a bunch of RHCP songs back to back made me wonder if it wasn’t for Flea how long they would have been relevant or if they would even be relevant in the first place. The songwriting abilities of the members are…lacking and Antony doesn’t have that great a voice, although I appreciate him trying out a lot of different styles. The distinctive groove of Flea’s bass is really the only great thing about RHCP. He clearly has a lot of funk and disco influences and his skill never fails to shine through. Overall, a listenable album but I don’t think it really holds up that well in comparison to the albums of rock giants they were up against at the time (if I want to hear rapping over a groove baseline then I’ll listen to RATM) Best tracks: Californication/Scar Tissue Worst tracks: Road Trippin’/Get On Top (Also points deducted for Antony being a nonce)

I grew up with California radio so the singles from this are deeply ingrained in me, but boy most of the deep cuts don't work at all to my ears.

Thank god they stopped him rapping on every song. The rapping was so bad as to make any of the songs with raps on unbearable. The slower songs were the highlight for me. A really inconsistent album.

Some great songs on this album but not all.

die rache der hotdogbude

sì i quattro pezzoni, il resto è superfluo. Male le ballatone

It’s alright. Cali pop rock. It’s is very much a classic album with a shit ton of popular songs from very popular musicians. My favorite is “Porcelain” It’s just not my music

I think the non single songs were pretty great. The singles I’ve heard ad naseum so they were def skips for me.

Decent album. I like the hits songs fairly well...Scar Tissue is a top 3 RHCPs song IMO. Feel like some of the album serves as filler. 3/5

Listened to years ago. Not take my bag but some fun

Enjoyed more than expected

Has its moments

I remembered there being more energy in this album than this. Not quite blood sugar sex magic.

White guy funk! Flea is sweet with it.

It was fine, not really sure why it was on a list of albums i need to hear before i die

I<m not a big RHCP fan, this is the first album I listen to from front to back. But it has quite a few high quality moments. My favorite moments are the poppier ones I find their Funk freak outs a little distracting though the skill of the playing is undeniable. Lots of good stuff. Not quite a four but surprisingly close. 3.75 stars

It's a "cleaner" version of Blood Sugar Sex Magik. The music is a formulaic repetition of mainstream stereotypes (that they already used in the previous album). (5/10) Favourite Tracks: Road Trippin', Otherside

I‘m indoctrinated by regular exposure during my teenage years.

This album is very nostalgic to me.

It’s catchy as hell.

The Californication music video terrified me as a child.

Much better than I expected. The good stuff (the singles and a couple of other tracks) are very good, but possibly I'm a little jaded about them due to their ubiquity at the time of release. The weaker elements are pretty good, making an overall pleasing and engaging listening experience. But they really should have invested in a few shirts.

this album is okay. I understand the hype but to me it's alrighttttt

Surprisingly fine. Didn't hate it. A little long.

It aight

It’s no Blood Sugar Sex Magic. I get this is Frusciante‘s triumphant return on guitar after he left back in the early 90s but I dunno. This record is a bit too tame for me. The singles are all ok, but overall the rest of the album is just fine. It’s not terrible, it’s not great. I feel like it’s like the zenith of just regular ass RHCP songs. There’s nothing here that grabs me like their earlier stuff. Probably a good listen for someone just diving in but the old stuff is better. Hate to be that guy but it’s how I feel.

Couple classics, lot of stuff that sounds generically like the RHCP

When The Good Place took a stab at Red Hot Chili Peppers indicating that fandom of this band was a ticket to "The Bad Place" I had one of those moments where I looked around and mouthed "Me?" while pointing at myself. Honestly on this album I think I understand that jab a bit more than when it comes to Stadium Arcadium (an album I'll defend with my dying breath). Nonetheless, Californication and a few other songs are indisputably good jams. His rock rap just threw me a bit at times.

Enjoyable upbeat album. RHCP isn't my favorite but this is their best work I think. I don't know if it's fair for me to ding it for being overplayed but it's my ratings and I will do what I want.

Not sure I've heard the whole album before so didn't know that the chili's were so varied in style, still liked the classic 'californication' type ones the best.

More melodic than I remembered

Liked their style…..good tunes

Saved Prior: Scar Tissue, Otherside, Californication Saved Off Rip: Parallel Universe Cutting Edge: Easily Overall Notes: Other than the three songs I knew already, the other songs kinda sounded the same. I wasn't able to devote full attention to the album so maybe I just wasn't listening close enough, but nothing especially stood out in a positive way. Will probably come back to this one.

weird album. some absolute unforgettable slaps like otherside, californication and parallel universe but some really weird songs that dont work at all like around the world and get on top

Pretty dull really. Should be a 2.5. Plumping for a very generous 3 mainly on thee grounds of the singles on the album. The rest not so good.

Nice album, shame that Rick Rubin clipped it to hell and back.

The beginning actually reminds me a little bit of the Kidrock album from last week. I guess that was a sound for that time period. I like the rest of the album (after the first track) better, though I still wouldn’t buy the album.

For some reason this album really makes me laugh. I want to hate it but I really just can't, its as fun as it is stupid. I wouldn't necessarily call this butt-rock since its just a slight peg up, making this taint-rock. The first song and "get on top" really reminds me of this https://youtu.be/LYjqm9HIGtQ. This album feels like how the band members look, greasy, kind of overtly sexual in a gross kind of way. Maybe I can't shake the fact that this music was made by pedophiles and rapists but I don't feel clean listening to it, even though the music really is pretty fun and kind of hilarious. I did get really tired of the singing after about halfway through the album though, he really does sound the exact same on almost every song. But the album picks up again in the last bit with some unique songs. Still, part of me can't totally get into these songs because they almost sound like a parody of something else with how played-up and samey they are. Overall, the album was good but there are a lot of things that put me off. Favorite track: Right on Time Least Favorite track: Otherside

Listened to this album a ton when I was younger, loved it then, not as much into it now.

rhcp were never really my thing

Not my jam. Their earlier work has inspired me more.

What’s up with the lame white boy rapping over rock? They stink. But I suppose it’s not a horribly produced album, and creatively it’s got some merit. And people really like it. So 3 starts.

Never been a big fan

2.5 rounded up for the sheer amount of singles and Road Tripping. IDK how I ever loved this band. Lyrics are yikes and production is bad (no dynamic range).

listened to about half, its the chili peppers. cant go wrong

I just can't get on board with RHCP. Yes their singles are bangers but it's all the same to me, slappadabass, some fast rapsinging then a bit of slow singing and repeat. I also just don't like his voice. I don't think they are bad but just not what I want from life.

Can't hate these Chili Peps, it's not a crazy-win for me, but an enjoyable listen especially those base-lines. Not as goofy as I remember them being, and with some iconic tracks. All of it sounds similar to me, but not in a terrible way. I will say that Californication itself is overplayed and not my fave song in the world.
