I CANT DO ANYMORE CLASSIC ROCK!

It seems they were trying to decide whether to be prog rock, classic rock or heavy metal. The transitions mid-song might be important in musical history but that didn't make them enjoyable to listen to

This is probably a result of playing it in the background while I worked instead of sitting with it more intentionally, but it was just alright. Nothing really stood out. Not bad at all, just not "WOW".

Not bad, not mind blowing. Needed to hear before I die? Sure, but only once. Some of the 4 and 5 star albums need to be heard much more, and there's a LOT of albums missing on this list that need to be heard more than this one. 2.25 / 5 stars

This is the worst edition of Guitar Hero yet. I think about how Led Zeppelin and Hendrix and Black Sabbath already existed at this time, but I guess the appetite was for more? Fun fact, Christopher Cross filled in for Ritchie Blackmore at Deep Purple's first US concert in 1970 which I presume was for this album. If this album is on here but Sailing isn't then I would like to speak with the manager.

This is an album from the English band Deep Purple, and as far as I know they were not popular in the USA until ‘Smoke on the Water’ was released. All tracks on this album I would classify as hard rock, none of which I am familiar. Hard rock was novel when this album came out, but now it seems mundane. Good guitar work on some of the tracks.

This album cover is sending me. It's like a LiveJournal icon I would have made in 2003. All I know about Deep Purple is 'Smoke on the Water', which is the only song we learned to play on guitar in middle school music class. To be fair, I liked playing it. But as expected, they are pretty "70s rock"y, with a surprising amount of metal-y vocals. I do like the organ(?) part on 'Speed King'. I also like that they had a super messy history as far as membership, kinda like Destiny's Child. But that's pretty much where the liking ends... Highlight: the lyric "Take the trouble to decide the things you do / will not be things that don't appeal to you" (good advice, bizarre syntax) Lowlight: rhyming "lovin'" and "movin'"? Absurd.

This is what my head sounds like when I don't take my medication. Noisy and discombobulated. 2 stars.

This is mostly just noise to me. Rough vocals, those high notes are piercing in an uncomfortable way.

Classic Rock group... classic rock album... just a little too psychedelic for me.

Clearly, a important album in the history of hard rock and heavy metal but not really many good songs

Dreadful really.

No thanks. 1970 was a tough year.

A bit dramatic.

Just can’t hear the appeal.

Kinda cool jam band noodling vibes, but ultimately something I wont come back to. Lots of the same it felt like. Deep Purple has done better in my opinion.

I didn't find that one very good. Left me bored and uninterested but I respected the solos.

Maybe a little boring, no bangers. Easy to listen to though

Horrible 70s jam rock, didn’t make it past the third song which was 10 minutes by the way. fuck off

dad music

I can appreciate its importance and I actually quite enjoyed the beginning but it got very tedious very fast for me. Much prefer a Black Sabbath over this.

Boringgggggg. Okay. Child in Time is pretty cool. Hard lovin man is fine too. I don’t hear the “heaviness” people praise this album for having. It’s definitely hard rock but I guess im just not too knowledgeable abt this genre. Meh. 2/5⭐️

Old school rock n' roll, but that doesn't mean I like it.

Never heard of these guys, though the 120 million YouTube Music plays on “Child in Time” made my eyes bulge out of my skull in a cartoonish fashion. Guess this is another instance where I’m the uncultured swine. Understandably uncultured, however. I’ve never been one for metal. This album is about what I was expecting, though I can admit it succeeds at being competently predictable. If I were a fan of hard rock or metal, I could see myself getting along well with this album. However, from a milder perspective there was little going on in these songs which hooked me and many of them were way longer than they ever needed to be. Can’t say I enjoy the blown-out sound, either – especially with the organs on Hard Lovin’ Man. In any case, Speed King is a pretty alright opener. The breakneck speed of the song works quite nicely, and I enjoy the groovy guitars in the second half of the song. It’s interesting that the English appear to have pioneered metal. I was always of the impression that it was started by the Americans, though I guess it makes sense the more I think about it. Christianity is much more of a Seppo thing than a Pommy thing, which metal is kind of a direct antithesis to. That being said, I’ve encountered way more American metalheads online than British ones. Strange. In any case, I get the impression that this album is a solid inclusion for the book. I’ll check just to make sure. “A hard rock milestone.” A whole lot of nothing specific beyond that quote. Wikipedia has more to say in favour of this album, being an early innovator of hard rock and heavy metal. There’s a lot of praise for this album without it entering “greatest of all time” territory. Regardless, as an early predecessor to some popular and acclaimed genres, I think there’s merit to this one. I shall graciously spare it from the album shredder, even if I liked very little of it.

This album sounds like Guitar Center on Saturday afternoon. Everyone in there has the spirit and two good ideas but it doesn't gel. Machine Head is the only Deep Purple you need and that is a stretch of the term "need"

I appreciate their spot on the list but I never found Deep Purple to be particularly engaging. Always felt middle-of-the-road-not-quite-hard-rock-not-quite-metal stuff. It's...alright.

Meh, it's Deep Purple

Too heavy, I cannot cope. But I did almost appreciate Child In Time...

One tune was a rocker.

Rainbow better

I really like rock from this era, but did not like this album.

Okay...won't even listen to again. A lot of the same sound over and over again.

tough amount of 7+ minute songs

very, very raw - most tracks are a hit or miss for me.

Nope. Not for me.

Bit classic rock for me

Not for me at all.

Pre-listening thoughts: who the hell are deep purple Post/during listening thoughts: my question remains unanswered. I did not recognize any of these songs. This was like if you asked Chat GPT to spit out a classic rock album. So so mid. 4/10 DID I NEED TO HEAR THIS BEFORE I DIE: no Fav tracks: could not distinguish these from one another Least fav tracks:

This is kind of just the most average/stereotypical rock album. It doesn't really stand out and ventures into hair metal territory with some of the screetching vocals and guitar. Meh. 4.5/10 (2.25/5)

Not my fave

I had mixed feelings about this. I SHOULD like it. Indeed, I *tried* to like it. But mostly I didn't. So much screaming.

I just don’t like this sound.

I could defenitely hear how this inflenced metal bands for decades after, but damn, it didnt age well.

Laaaaaaaaaaargo. Un poco entretenido pero no lo suficiente para engancharme.

Name one Deep Purple song. No, not that one, a different one. Exactly. A lesser Black Sabbath intercut with a lesser Yes (Maybe?) and just as long, without being terribly interesting. The album cover puts them on a Rock Mt. Rushmore. Sure, in the Superman II universe.

Deep trash. It doesn't rock, tho it is dense, it doesn't roll, tho it careens off a cliff of its own bullshit. 'Good Golly, said little Miss Molly'; 'Tutti Frutti was oh so rooty.' This doesn't remotely approximate Little Richard, neither the attitude nor the voice. And then it gets strangely racist w/: 'Got black breast Chinese eyes / Got an English brain that's gonna make me wise.' I don't want to be a moral policeman, but that literally translates as: non-white women are good for their bodies, white women for their smarts. Can they play? Sure, and the central guitar solo on 'Child in Time' is their best thing going. But Ian Gillan's yelping is pathetic, and the gist of the record substantiates the truism that there's nothing worse than aimless rocking.

Previous attempts to listen to Deep Purple have left me cold, but today I enjoyed this. That said, I've still never heard a riff or solo from Richie Blackmore that I've remembered - apart from the obvious ones. None of them are on here. 2 Chunky oul balls, too loud at any volume. 1.5

don't like it, a bit "noisy"

I'm sure this is cool to whoever its cool to, but this was whatever.

Too deep for me

Too early...

Some pretty crazy guitar skills. Eerie church. Preach.????

“Aaahhhhhh!!!!” from the lead singer was a highlight as well as the drummer but that’s about it.

Organs, organs everywhere. Middling.

I knew pretty much nothing about Deep Purple aside from SotW so was def interested in hearing more. The first song didn't set the stage well, it lost me before the third line with "tutti frutti was ohhh so rooty." I was surprised they had this heavy of a sound, some parts of the album were ok but a lot of it felt pretentious with lots of pointless solos and shrill vocals. I can see how this was maybe big at the time but it really didn't age well. It's a decent launching point for better music to come but it hits all the tropes and feels like self-indulgent stadium rock. I did like the organ at times and can appreciate some good shreds but it doesn't land for me. 1.95 for repetitive and a few too long songs.

Deep Purple is known for 1 song and we all know it so I welcomed something else by them. In Rock is not the best but it does have some good guitar shredfest...particularly on the top track "Child in Time." It's grungy hard-ish rock and for the time I can see the appeal; however, I was a little unimpressed overall with the album. I listened to the original version (as intended) and went back for the remastered and it was better. Cleaned up...the guitar work does shine but I'm rating this on the original so 2.28 stars.

I appreciate the incred guitar solos but I don’t think I’m a deep purple gal

Fully aware this was way ahead of its time and has some incredible riffs guitar but not really my cuppa chai but did like more than I thought I might?

That organ knocked it down to a 2 for me. I could definitely hear lots of metal roots on this on though.

A fairly tedious rendition of 70s rock. I just can't understand how deep purple are held in such esteem. 2.5*

Not for me but now I understand 80s hair bands a lot more

Not a fan. Not sure why.

Feels like 40 minutes of wanky guitar being substituted for a small peepee

My 3rd Deep Purple album was alas, not the charm. The vocals make my skin crawl, the prog keys make my eyeballs hurt. Not for me.

Not as intolerable to my ears as I was dreading, as at this point in my life I’ve had enough of most classic rock. This is my first listen to this album of heavy rock with some interesting flourishes like a conversation back-and-forth between a guitar and keyboard. Ian Gillan is a legendary singer and has range within the rock god confines. I appreciated it in parts, don’t need to listen to again.

Some fun, high-energy, classic rock and roll tracks on here that are really stand-out for their time. Whole album is defintely marked by a turn of the decade psych rock feel that makes for some good sunny-day smoking music. Musicianship is great, but production wasn't my favorite and the tracks didn't really pull me in like I wanted them to. Still real fun tho! Fav track: Speed King

A big no thanks to this album. Long jams in any style of music just tend to get on my nerves.

I like some deep purple stuff, but this album, except the excellent Child in Time, is a bit overwhelming.

I’m bored, boss. 4/10

Bit too much wailing

The album has a lot of instrumental parts, which I find rather boring for the most part. The long intros to the songs are really meh. Child in Time has the most listens and is the song I dislike the most for mostly being slow and instrumental and over 10 minutes long. The songs themselves aren't bad, if only they were compressed to 1 minute. After listening to the album a second time, I think I only really like Speed King, and only when cutting the long intro. It's not a 1, because some parts are really nice. But I can't bring myself to rate it better than 2.

I like Child in Time (though it goes on too long). I like Ian Gillian in Jesus Christ Superstar (though I prefer John Legend). My husband really likes Deep Purple. I tried, honestly. But I just can’t.

Too many Deep Purple albums on this list. They sound like The Doors and Black Sabbath had a baby, and he turned out uglier than both parents. You've got all the cheese of early '70s metal, without Ozzy Osbourne's lyrics and original style, and you've got the random organ solos and overly long songs of The Doors in all the wrong places, not pairing well with the rest of the band's feel or the singer's voice. I have no idea if they are good songwriters, since all I can hear is the instrumentals, and the vocal stuff I do hear makes me cringe. The only thing saving them from a 1 is the instrumental quality of the album and the catchy hooks throughout. Songs Saved: 1/7 Does it belong on this list? One Deep Purple record would have been enough. Certainly not this one. I did like Child in Time, even though it drags on a little too long. Worst song: Hard Lovin' Man.

No. Not my thing at all.

Just ok - no memorable songs for me

Hard rock parody

Pffffffft

Pretty much the definition of meh, British blues rockers that don’t really do much with the genre. A couple of the longer songs, where they jammed a bit further out were at least interesting, but otherwise nothing much to recommend here.

A bit too much emphasis on the "hard" part of hard rock. I didn't dislike this like other proto-metal albums, but it's just not for me.

Eh, not a fan of long solos. Just not my style. I need some funk, maybe some kind of emotion.

I tried - I just wasn’t feeling it. I have never been a huge metal fan which certainly doesn’t help but I really didn’t enjoy this at all. I’ll give it a 2 because it was no doubt an album that helped inspire an entire genre.

Pretty one trick pony

The songs and lyrics are really lacking here. I didn't find them to offer much more than some sweet guitar. The only stand our track was Child in Time but wow is that a long song....

Kind of bland. Album doesn’t do anything impressive. 2.5/5 Won’t listen again

Fine, but got a little samey

There were a couple tracks that I thought were really good, but overall this album felt like a mess. Too many solos, too much wailing, and no cohesion in to making a song good. I get they were trying to go for a live feel, but it just didn’t work for me as a studio album. It comes across forced.

Please stop screaming to my ears.

A time machine that transports me to my aunt's high school boyfriend's basement in the 1970s in London, Ontario

Fine and well written. Another rock album that just isn’t my speed. Wish there was more soloing/improvisation like the first track.

Thankfully short, even with some long ass songs. Sounded derivative of lots of other bands of the era. Kinda rockin, but I wouldn’t revisit it.

Not the greatest album, and none of the good Deep Purple songs are on it, would not listen again.

I did not like that. I am not entirely sure why, it seems adjacent to many other albums I have enjoyed. But something about it really just rubbed my the wrong way.

Dorky like Yes, gross like KISS, cringe performances like Van Halen

Better than I expected, but not to my taste.

Meh...pretty lame actually. 1.5/5

Not my type of rock

Not for me

Solid rock

One really shitty song kinda ruined it

Cut to Skinner Meme - Panel 1: "Am I out of touch?" Panel 2: "No, it's the classic rock who are wrong" I just don't think I get classic rock. I get why people CAN like it, I just don't.

2 out of 5

They do a good job capturing a "live show" sounding vibe. I'm just not sure if that's a great choice. It just doesn't really stand out to me. It feels like any generic rock album from this era. I will say, they do go very hard. I can't think of a better way to word this, but the whole band is overplaying, if that makes sense. It's a fine album. I'm not convinced it's particularly good, let alone great. They're showcasing their obvious talent, but they're not doing anything particularly interesting, like it's just crazy guitar licks and drum fills. Favorite Song(s): Into the Fire

Not a fan

Just not great

Mediocre classic rock album with one god awful song.

Leaving the 1 star open for the truly terrible — but this sucked. Child in Time truly excruciating. Boooo

I can't

Band is not for me, feels like a metal version of the dead.

Respectable but forgettable

Really wish I cared.

Ok but a bit repetitive, rocks hard!

It was nice to hear something from them other than “Smoke on the Water,“ or “Space Trucking.“ But that doesn’t mean I liked this any better.

Really disappointed in this

Didn't like, too much

It was okay. I listened to it on my way to work yesterday but nothing stood out enough to remember.

Child In Time is een banger maar verder werkt het op de zenuwen

Unremarkable

70's have never been my vibe a little too repetitive and uninteresting, good to listen as a background

Not very chill and not my fave

Just all around not that good. Child In Time is a decent song, but the rest is borderline unlistenable.

Hard rock

-well it sort of just reminds me of Rush and a lot of other prog rock music from that era to me, even though it’s technically considered metal i guess -it’s not bad. i can’t really connect with as well though -some of the shorter songs were interesting -Favorites are Flight Of The Rat and Into The Fire

Never really been a Deep Puple fan. Only know and like Child in Time and I don't even like that track that much. So it can't save this album from getting only 2 stars.

Quite liked the organ but tired of everything else quite quickly.

honestly not to my taste at all, not musically inclined enough to catch the nuances between songs, all of it sounds pretty much the same to me. favs: child in time (i guess)

Has Child in Time, which I really enjoy. Not much else stood out though.

2 STARS

Unclean records..

I'm not into the whole hair bad heavy metal thing. Sounds just like all the others...

Like I said with the previous Deep Purple album, I think the teen me would have liked this album more than the current me. I'm getting the vibe that this band's concerts were most likely sausage fests with a lot of attendees smoking weed and driving vans with a mattress in the back. 2.5/5

For starters, points for an album cover that directly influenced Spinal Tap. That's why this gets two stars. Beyond that, there is little of interest to me here and I have no idea why this made the list.

This didn't impress, though I do like Deep Purple's earlier stuff. Sure, the guitar work is great but the lyrics seemed stupid and I didn't get much of a sense of rhythm.

Overblown and pretentious. Just no need for it, I’m sure they have it in their locker to do better.

Not my type

agreeing with the group on this one. i’d rather listen to other things

Not bad but I’m deducting a star on principle because I disagree with the idea that out of all the music in the world that TWO Deep Purple albums should be required listening

Unremarkable. This is the 2nd Deep Purple record on this list I'm not sure their catalog merits the inclusion of 2 records

This album is about 10% psych/garage rock and 90% hard rock/proto-metal. The longer, trippier sequences I could tolerate. I can't stand the wanking and the riffing and the vocals.

ii ama o kdr deil

crazy organs, I’ve never heard sounds like that. Very Jack Black / School of Rock, face melting stuff. Kinda like it but not a whole albums worth. Thought they were American before learning they were 1/3 of the ‘holy trinity’ of British hard rock/ metal music pioneers with Led Zepplin and Black Sabbath. Guitar skills are mad.

I didn't hate it, which is a pleasant surprise in itself

i kept saying maybe? but no not really could i write poetry to this? n

Unfortunately not my favorite! Fear the age of the album shows and don’t love the singer. Cool rock tunes but nothing more to me.

Decent old school hard rock just not for me

Kind of psychedelic rock. Not really my thing

STANDOUTS: nope OVERALL: 1.5/5

Better as it went. Definitely good musicianship, music is cool but it is also clear why Zeppelin, Sabbath get all the acclaim. Overall- meh.

How to frighten the horses: a cut-out-and-keep guide.

Boring again. 2.1 from fatigue

I think I always knew that deep purple utilised the organ…but not this much.

Dios sálvame del prog rock

Ok but I’ve heard it before even though I haven’t heard it before

More blues/jam inspired than I expected, still reductive - doesn't do anything better than Zepplin II even

Some albums are timeless, some are of their time. Unfortunately, I think if there was a time for me to get into this, it was 50 years ago. Interesting to hear the beginnings of metal. But Christ, there's even a drum solo. 2.5 🌟

Cardinal sin of being boring idk. I wasn’t offended I guess. Just bored, gomen.

Good hard rock band out of the 70’s. Some classic songs.

I find it charming that a bunch of hard rock guys (Lemmy, Deep Purple apparently) just adored Little Richard. Mt Rushmore is one of the dumbest things ever. 5 guys on a rock Mt Rushmore on a first album is very funny. A bit too much like a Led Zeppelin with more keyboards. hated. (⌐■_■)

Never really been grabbed by Deep Purple, now I take the time to listen not much has changed. Driving but directionless fast hard rock. Shrieking. Not going to listen again.

Oh dear. Dear me, no. It's my problem, not theirs, but I kept expecting them to break into Stonehenge or Big Bottoms and I couldn't take it seriously.

First track seems to be several different songs fused together. Verses have nothing to do with the chorus and are mashed-up lyrics from rock & roll classics. Don't mind the singing, hate the prog guitar noodling and the tappy cymbals. Very little light and shade. Is this Ian Gillan? It is. He can sing a lot better than this. Track two is whiney/shrieky and a bit monotonous. Don't think I can listen to all of this.

I imagine this is was Tool of its era with significantly more stoned fan base.

Not even the best Deep Purple album let alone generally

Hate when something so influential to hard rock sounds like dog ass.

I think the impact of this album has been lost over the last fifty years. So many bands were influenced by it that we can no longer feel the original impact. That said, there is fat on the album that was common with studio indulgence at the time. But if I were asked to describe early 70s FM album oriented rock.... This album is a great place to start.

Listened to a few tracks at work too heavy

Enjoyed this more than the Metallica album, but still not really my cup of tea

This album rates as a 2 or D- for me. There are several Deep Purple songs I like but there are none of those here.

pass. smoke on the water or bust for me

When a band as old as Deep Purple has an album on this list without their main radio songs, I may have over hyped myself before starting it. I've always heard DP as being one of "your favorite bands favorite bands" kind of thing, and I'm fan of prog rock, what could go wrong? I'm not sure what went wrong exactly, but it sounded kind of a mess. Often I'll say keys are a common missing ingredient for classic rock that doesn't hit the spot, but this had keys. Some songs reminded me of ELP in a way that has prompted me to dub it Carnival Rock, which ends up being a negative. A lot of musical flair with any reason other than to be flashy, and I wasn't in a circus mood today I guess. There were some good qualities, particularly in "Child in Time" but over 10 minutes left too much time for nonsense. Favorite track: (parts of) "Child in Time" 2/5

Tulen harmittavaan lopputulokseen: ei toimi. Minäkin kaipaan musiikkiin enemmän romantiikkaa kuin pelkällä riffittelyllä ja kiljunnalla on mahdollista saada aikaan. Tosin Child in Timen vastustamaton meemiarvo takaa 2 pistettä.

The birth of butt rock? Not for me.

I'm a big fan of songs that have intros and nontraditional structures as it reminds of development techniques used in classical music. Even in the context of rock instruments, not knowing what will come next keeps me engaged. That's something I do enjoy, but this style of punkish forwardness really isn't my favorite. Just personal preference.

Never enjoyed Deep Purple all the much.

Very Deep Purple

I can appreciate the technical proficiency of Deep Purple but I sort of prefer the odd live version for the skills to really shine through. Other than that it's all a bit much undeniably talented just not my thing.

It was nothing remarkable at all to me

An example of a solid 70's rock album. Drums and guitar were incredible, but I wish the vocals kept up with the production value. I don't think I'll ever be a huge fan of most 70's and 80's rock albums.

You can tell these are very talented musicians. That being said, they lack when it comes to songwriting. There was nothing engaging about these songs. It seemed like the songs were a vehicle to show off how good they are at solos.

Stolen from my pintage post: Never have I been so conflicted by an album in my life - equal part pretentious prog rock of the worst kind and deep driving organ and guitar riffing which had me toe tapping like there was no tomorrow.

I didn’t really like this.

I enjoyed parts of songs. The parts I liked were usually Richie Blackmore guitar sections.

Fuck off with the Brit Rock. It's like this list is 90% BritRock

Not a fan. Before my time.

I found this really hard to finish.

Some decent guitar solos but not so great songs

Early 70's rock. Not my jam at all.

Not a fan of jam bands or being yelled at. They do "rock out" though in between droning. It's probably better to be high.

Pre album thoughts - ugh I am really not looking forward to more classic rock. This could be a problem for me to get through the rest of this list. Child in time - really impressive guitar skills It’s not really my kind of music, but it’s creative and I see why people would be really into this.

The first two songs are typical 70s tripe. Child in Time is nice. Back into 70s tripe on track 4. There was an extreme penchant in the 70s to think people wanted to listen to albums full of nonsensical instrumentals. No one cares about your self-indulgent interludes. Please make your songs shorter. To top it all off, the album ends in... whatever that was. A star for Child in Time, but really, that's the only thing worth listening to.

Could only listen to a few songs but there was a killer 10 minute track on there.

Child in time is a masterpiece but after that the album is going down fast. And the last song was horrible..

Awwm K..amok.m9 M ,Er

it's a No from me-too many wailing "aaaah-ha's", not a fan of metal genre, and a 10 minute long track

Not my type of rock

I think I like the songs. I can get over the muddy production, breakneck transitions that don't feel natural, and endless soloing, but I really can't stand the vocals. They completely ruin it for me.

How much purple can you get? The answer is none. None more purple

Utter lyrical garbage. This is incoherent nonsense. Probably the most 70s of the 70s rock I've ever heard. This feels like it's where ridiculous falsetto wailing began and it should have died here.

Not for me

He's guys certainly can shred and drum but how about song writing??

Screaming and headbanging

É um bom álbum, mas não é muito minha vibe

There’s a reason you’ve heard the “Smoke on the Water” riff played in every guitar shop you’ve ever been in—it’s primitive and there’s not much else to it. Such is the music of Deep Purple. Their music hasn’t faired well outside of the ‘70s; they never ended up with the broad, visionary appeal of a group like Zeppelin, and this record is evidence of that. Nobody rushes home, eager to blast “Deep Purple in Rock,” hoping to transform their cares and worries into ecstasy through air guitar (or air organ?) antics. It may sound like Rock n Roll sacrilege, but there’s too much of everything on this record—the excess kills the vibe. And there’s not nearly enough of the basics. Overblown guitar and organ workouts without memorable riffs or singable choruses dominant.

4.5/10 Second DP album, liked this more than the last But this was another hard rock 70s album in a list that seems stacked with them Competent but boring Best: Speed King

Very silly, but I have a soft spot for Deep Purple ever since The Fall covered Black Night.

I mean this is what I think if when I think of classic rock. It's the epitome of the most generic classic rock sound I could even imagine.

p205. 1970. 2.5 stars. So! This is the genesis of all those 70s heavy metal bands! Well of its kinds but suffers from ridiculous lyrics and excessive early 70s wankage. Nobody needs multiple tracks >7 minutes long, regardless of how well or fast you can play.

Were there even any lyrics in "Child in Time" it was a lot of screaming and finishes with what seems like it might be a screamgasm.

Probably not.

Not my vibe but appreciated all the instrumental work

Heavy with some great songs and some that almost hurts to listen to. This mix could work out to be a great album but it does not do it for me personally. Hit: Into the fire Miss: typ resten lol

Good for people in the 70s looking to hang while taking drugs. There are catchy bits, but they are overshadowed by long music intervals that, while technically impressive, bore me and kill my desire to listen more. Lead singer has a great voice and when there are hooks, it’s bangin’. Unfortunately, I just don’t think this is my kind of music.

I'm actually not able to stream this album. Deep Purple is a hole in my music knowledge, particularly for this early rock period.

Was just okay. I am a big fan of many rock bands from this era, many inspired from what my Dad listened to. Deep Purple was never one I heard and now I understand why.

Wasn’t great, other bands around the time or slightly later are much more my taste

Not really my vibe

This one's not for me. I enjoy some deep purple songs but overall I wouldn't go out of my way to listen to it again

Good early 70s metal. Respect what they did. Not my thing. 2.75

Viel Rock, wenig Melodie

Didn’t complete it.

its rock but child in time is insane

There was nothing in particular that stood out to me about this album.

70s rock that does not seem to have much to offer in 2023, for me.

This is Spinal Tap...but without the funny bits.

There are good things about this record. The vocal performance and the stands of classical that Lord and Blackmore bring is compelling. It's just so bloody 'rock' though. And so English. There's no swagger or sex. It makes you realise how funky and American Led Zeppelin were.

I do indeed love all the guitar here. It's an embarrassment of guitars, which would be a great Deep Purple album title. Is there much that's memorable? Not a ton, no. Nothing that gives me that Smoke on the Water vibe. But when they launch into the numerous guitar solos herein, I have fun with it.

Turgid.

2.4 - thought child in time was great, love a good guitar solo. Felt it just nose dived and stressed me out

Not for me.

My music player was malfunctioning and I was generally annoyed that I had to listen to the first half of Child in Time three times. The guitar work was fine, but even then, any of the songs that were longer than 5 minutes I found myself looking at the time remaining bar seeing when the song would end.

Boring, noodly 70s rock.

Nothing special

Please something different than rock

Clearly influential on future bands but the songs are largely forgettable.

1.8/5 - in 1970 this might have blown my mind, in 2023 i found it quite boring Update - went back to listen to Hush and Highway Star after listening to this album, those songs hold up so well in comparison. Strange to me that this album is on the list, generic nothing rock

it sounds just like every other 70s rock band, idk, nothing super special to me. Too much weird screaming and guitar riffs for me. 2

Classic rock album, very deep album. Not really my thing but definitely relevant to the time and genre.

Not really sure how song rights work for streaming services, but Spotify only has the rights to 2 tracks on this album (in Canada)… That said, I do like the more popular Deep Purple songs, these aren’t them. I consider it pretentious when the lead singer (who does have a great voice) screams and moans more often than deliver lyrics in a 10 minute song. The other song is 7 minutes in length. Hmmmm…. The musicality is fine, if not great (guitars and keyboards rejoice!) but I will not be listening to this one again. High 2

Spotify doesn't have the whole album so maybe this isn't fair but it's good for what it is I guess. The screaming on one track was a bit much....

Nothing says metal wire like a bitchen Hammond organ solo...

Not for me really. Find it just a bit too cheesy. Overly long and pointless keyboard solos and maniac wailing just isn’t my bag. Music to gallop on a horse to maybe.

The cover is funny, i like the concept of mount rushmore with the faces of the band members. Its their fourth studio album and their most hard so far, ish heavy metal, the kind of music that would make them legendary in the same categorie as Black Sabbath and Leds Zep. Speed king is a good riff and it have a good organ solo Ian Gilligan vocals are impressive on bloodsucker With only 7 songs the album lengt is like 45 minutes, so the songs are very long, and a lot of them like flight of the rat or child in time are repetitive. Hard lovin' man is one of the fastest and more "heavy" on the album With all that said, i have to say that i'm a big fan of Machine Head their best album and the most sucessfull and i really think this album, nevertheless good, is a bit of a lesser good version, a rehearsla for Machine Head. The best riff here are not in the same league as Smoke on the water, the best solos does not come close to Highway star ect. So yeah not bad but not as good as we know they are

Only 2 songs available on Spotify

This album should not be in the top 1001 albums.

It doesn’t include their biggest hit, but it is a very cool statement from a classic band from the hard rock era.

I understand why people would like it, but to me it's just an attempt to be cool, instrumentals are cool and drums are nice, it just lacks the idea of tension and release imo

on the one hand, pretty innovative and impressive for 1970. on the other hand, I'd pay good money to never hear ian gillan sing again

What you’d expect really. Some decent melodies, but some nonsense too.

gets an extra star for Jesus on vocals otherwise ugh bloated and boring

One of the hardest working bands in history, Deep Purple still just doesn't do it for me.

There is some INTENSE guitar sounds on this album for 1970! Other than that I found it to be pretty repetitive.

Good but a bit too samey as the album goes on. 2.5

Some ok moments here, for the most part it's pretty much just generic 70s hard rock though. Not for me.

Spotify only had two songs available for me to hear. Neither one made me feel this album should be on the list. However, I always liked the band name so....

I'm not a big fan of metal and this album does nothing to change that opinion. I can handle loud, prolonged guitar riffs but they start getting gratuitous and excessive when 80% of the album is loud guitar solos that sound way too similar to each other.

Langweiliges, generisches Hardrock-Geknatter. Das Songwriting bei Deep Purple ist bestenfalls mittelmäßig. Ich ziehe die im gleichen Jahr (etwas später) erschienene Paranoid von Black Sabbath tausendmal vor.

This has been on my “albums to listen to” list so I’m excited to see it here! After listening, there was really nothing that stood out to me as special. Sounded like I was just listening to 70s rock radio. I was actually a little disappointed! Listen again: probably not Purchase for my collection: no Favourite Song:

Bit meh but I enjoyed it

Understand why this is on the list, godfathers of metal and all, but this isn't great. The needless screaming on every track really put it over the edge.

Pretty basic rock album it got a bit boring as i got deeper

Not the one I like the most

I'm sure it sounded better in the 70's!

For a hot second this was a 3 because I really like Child in Time but unfortunately everything else is a massive bore

I just can’t get behind this style of butt rock.

Feels underwhelming when compared to their other stuff

Not really my cup of tea, but not bad.

Alright just annoying synth

I guess you had to be there at the time. Through modern ears it's just too generic to give a shit about.

So over the top that I have to dismiss it. Too much banshee screaming. Never been a fan and this listen confirms my aversion to Deep Purple and the like

Inte min typ av musik märkte jag.

I like a few Deep Purple songs but I wasn’t familiar with any of these songs. Was excited to see what this was going to be like. Then the songs started……… Every time I think I’m about to like one of these songs, they do something to screw it up. I don’t like any of the leads. If the singer is singing, it’s annoying. If there was an organ solo, it was annoying. If there was a drum solo it’s annoying. The guitar solos were annoying. It was just all annoying. Some of the songs weren’t bad if the vocals were better and the solos weren’t so awful. If I could strip the shit and add good stuff to the base that I like, we might be talkin’ ‘bout something. As is……..Every song sounded like a Black Sabbath discarded song with a little organ blandly overdubbed on it. And that’s that.

Ikke lige så catchy som Machine Head.

Generic hair band vibes

Meh. I'm picky with metal and this wasn't the one for me.

Don't like rock much

It reminded me a lot of the Van Halen album, only not as good. Nothing stuck with me - the music had the sound of generic rock, with stereotype lead vocals and riffs. Excellent musicians, but I didn't think the material was up to their abilities, like actors doing their best with a mediocre script.

2/5 some great riffs but they don’t sustain my interest. definitely a harbinger of what hard rock and metal would become.

Didn't really connect with it. Seemed like a dollar store version of Led Zeppelin. Not awful, just not great.

Niet voor mij weggelegd dit album. Begin van Child in Time vind ik leuk klinken maar daarna wordt het wel een langdradig nummer.

I always thought of these guys as a one-riff wonder joke, there’s a reason every record store in the country has their albums in the dollar bin, they aren’t that interesting. Technical chops might be there, but these songs are pretty lame. The singing is particularly mediocre.

Too many falsettos. Felt like I was listening to Dennis Reynolds by the end of Child In Time

They really know how to rock 2.7/5

Ja, Tief Violett halt. Briten mit Ami Sound. Kein Ausreisser nach oben, aber solid.

Child in Time is great - te rest of the album, decidedly meh. 2.5 stars

I just listened to made in japan yesterday... I cannot express how much I do not want to listen to more rock and metal and the most boring music that all sounds the same. Idk how people will say all rap sounds the same and then bob their head for hours listening to this and all other music that sounds like it. It's not bad, but it's not my type of music and oh my lord am I done with it. I don't want to hear rock for another month, idk why there aren't any other genres of music to explore in this. Almost fully caught up now thank the lord.

Help me understand why we got more Deep Purple. Is it that the first album wasn’t boring enough? Is it to make us appreciate the other albums, perhaps to soften the blow of the “trash can noises” album? I don’t get it. Please. No more Deep Purple, I beg of you 1001albumsgeberator.com have mercy

This process has certainly dulled the allure of rock n’ roll. F*** Deep Purple. “Child in Time” was fantastic though, I just say. This was honestly better than I expected, but still not good. Great album cover though.

Speed King, feels familiar, like the organ. Bloodsucker, wasn't paying attention, boring. Child in Time, fake epic, another miss. Yeah songs too long, album is trash.
