Reviews (page 10 of 12)
I love the purple but this wasn’t my favourite album by them it was honestly just a lot of screaming and not as much instrumentals or actual singing
It's rad man.
Didn’t really listen to to it that much it didn’t grab me enough for me to care out of the gate.
Solidt rockalbum. I modsætning til motorhead, synes jeg stadig det har relevans i dag.
Ægte rock n roll, catchy, lækre riffs, lange soloer
70s rock such as this one tend to have a particular formula. Yells, screaming, the kind where the tongue comes out the hand gestures in tow --- it's all here. In particular "Child in Time" in its near epic conclusion you can feel the vessels in your brain sympathetically strain with Deep Purple. The album is otherwise not super exceptional, but it does usher in rather effectively the classic sound of the 1970s, where things got a bit rougher around the edges, where the flowers and brightness of the 60s got muted with browns and oranges before settling into the darker acts which eventually gave us bands like Black Sabbath, and Alice Cooper. It can be said that Deep Purple is a safer version of 1970s metal, the kind you can enjoy without feeling gruesome.
I used to love Deep Purple much more than I do now, a fact I attribute to their simple brand of rock music that got replaced by better stuff since. Still, Child in Time is a great song.
7/10
Beetje veel, maar toch best tof.
Mmmmmm. Gritty.
Deep Purples Classic break through album. The Classic 'Purple line up, some good music on this and not just head's down hard rock. Good example of the development of heavy metal "Old Wave" and you can see the links with Led Zep, et al on this album. Favourite track has to be "Black Night" I have "Made In Japan" as my favourite DP album as it gives a much clearer view of the band's live capabilities than any studio album could. When you look at what this bands members went on to achieve.. Wow
Didn’t really listen tbh but I can tell by skimming through it is white as fuck.
The blueprint of 70s and 80s British heavy metal. Amazing how iron maiden wound so similar 10 years later! Great riffs!
Ovaj album ima žestine. SHREDDING BORTHER!! Uglavnom, dobar album.
Enjoyable but in the middle for me. Thankful I didn't have to listen to Smoke on the Water again (but I'm only twenty albums in)
Only two tracks available on Spotify. Noodly prog rock with the occasional headbang.
High-energy rock with tons of cool organ, but the screaming?
Love the guitar riffs but the vocals alternate between completely lacking tone or melody and shrill hair band screams (while consistently remaining devoid of harmony). I would love to hear someone with great musical instincts perform these songs at karaoke; they could be really special if the vocals sounded musical.
Really skilled platers but nlt the best music

Favourite track: black dog
Goed maar niet mijn stijl
Pretty good album, and I get these guys were pioneers, but its the psychedelic part of their hard rock I don't really dig. Some great songs, some really bad songs.
I thought this album was cool for roughly one minute. I can see why this would have blown people's minds in 1970, but it sounds a little self indulgent today, like when Dennis from It's Always Sunny pretends to be a rock star. Seriously, Flight of the Rat is at least a minute longer than it needs to be so that the drummer can fit in a song-ending solo. That's fine for a live show, but completely unnecessary for an album. I'm only halfway through this album, and I'm mad about the fact that I'm going to listen to the whole thing 3/5
Meh
5/10 mehh
This is very in your face. Some fine guitar work. Maybe the model for shrieky vocals which are probably more suited to a live show than a record.
Great musicianship and I enjoyed the guitar work especially, but the songs are more like jams and they lose the novelty after a few songs.
mount rushmore looks a bit different here boys!
Solid rock album that will queue up a day of rock music on spotify.
Definitely Deep Purple.
This album kinda makes me want to go out and break something; it has that kind of energy. It's a pretty fun energy when you're feeling it, but I wouldn't really listen to this otherwise. Apart from that, it's one of their earlier works, and although it's a pretty good album, their later works are definitely better. Favorite track: Child in Time
This one is kind of average. Deep Purple did better on pretty much all of their other albums. This probably only made the list because of Child in Time which is admittedly a banger. Highlights: 1, 3, and 7.
Not bad. Nothing super exciting though. All songs sound the same
Deep purple I know from a famous riff. They have plenty of hard riffs but the album doesn’t feel like much more than that. The songs themselves aren’t anything special. 6.3/10
Some great classic rock tracks, but that said, it sounds a bit dated now and the production is a little weak.
Thoughts: Not much, it’s just kinda boring. The music feels a bit empty the majority of the time. Maybe I need to give it another listen but it’s just not my type of thing I guess Favorite songs: Hard Lovin’ Man, Child in Time
I generally like the Deep Purple sound, but it's a lot to take in on a whole album. Not bad at all though.
All right.
1 - terrible, can't stand. 2 - not for me but doesn't hurt my ears. 3 - decent, could stick on again. 4 - enjoyed it, will listen again. 5 - absolute belter
Funky. Old sound, reminds me of an old B-movie, moved onto fireball automatically after the album finished and was feeling that more so than this one
Easy listening. Nothing stood out but I enjoyed it
The roots of 80s metal. Great to hear the thread.
Good album
Some good heavy rock songs. I didn't get through the whole album. But its enjoyable.
Sounds like a Led Zeppelin tribute band, but with more prog and less blues. Still, this is a raucously good time overall, an all-out assault on the eardrums. What it lacks in majesty, it makes up for in effort, sheer heaviness and slam. Play this loud.
Wow this is not what I thought Deep Purple would sound like. This is almost like hair metal classic glam rock. This is fuckin hilarious. Not bad the more I listen to it
No. ❤️
Despite its classic status it’s more of an important album than a classic in my opinion, although there are some great tunes on here (Speed King, Black Night). Child In Time is just mad though.
A band still quite some way away from reaching their peak but clearly all the ingredients were their. Richie Blackmore’s blistering playing is breathtaking and Ian Gillan really shines on the epic Child in Time, which is undoubtedly the album’s high point.
eh - it's alright and passed the time, but it sounds like generic rock. Not really my cup of tea.
it was good but nothing special. prob wouldn’t listen to again
Listened
Didn't remember it being this heavy. Child in Time is epic.
Often regarded as Deep Purple's best album but it doesn't quite hit for me. Blackmore rips it up as usual, though. Best track: Speed King
Had a Deep Purple not long ago. Seems similar, classic rock, really upbeat, enjoyable. Sounds more classic than I ever thought these guys to be. Sounds Led Zep-ish. 3/5
Enjoyed this. High energy guitar rock. Sounds more modern than 1970. Best track: Child in Time.
Some bangers on there (Speed King!) but missing Black Night which came out around the same time. Still some over-the-top prog-rock sounding stuff that I really didn't like (Child in Time), so limits the replay value for me vs just a greatest hits album.
A couple of good tunes. Felt like a poor man's Led Zep. 'Hard Lovin' Man' gave me a headache.
Very good.
Enjoyed more thank Rush but still a bit sameynot for me
Good fun, nothing to write home about
Rockprog. BT: Speed King, Bloodsucker, Flight of the Rat
Good rocking album
Did not know this one. Definitely a window into a era.
Good 70s rock album, Emil loves them
pretty solid album, but ngl I miss the raw intense energy of Live in Japan
Good rock album but nothing super noteworthy for me
I was pretty pleased to see this album, because I’m a fan of Deep Purple. Hadn't listened to the entire album in over 35 years - it wasn't all of what my nostalgia had hoped for. That said, it wasn’t bad either - there were some brilliant moments - Ritchie Blackmore’s guitar work in the nondescript songs “Bloodsuckers” and “Into the Fire”. there were also not so brilliant moments - e.g. vocal screeching from Ian Gillan. // The final track, “Black Night”, has been a longtime favorite (mainly due rob some great live versions). Overall solid 70 s rock.
Surprisingly enjoyable - very cool riffs.
Hit and miss. Liked the heavy stuff. Bit long.
enjoyable, not really my thing
"Hard headed woman and a soft hearted man They been causing trouble since it all began" (Speed king) "In my mind I had to fin A kind of new way Of being oh so cool Like a blue blooded Well studded English fool" (Flight of the rat) Es posible que sea la persona del mundo a la que menos le interesa Deep Purple. Cómo que diez minutos de canción, señor, a dónde va usted.
Alright album. Lots of guitar driven songs, minimal vocals meaning lots of so gs sound very similar.
I mean this just rocked. These were a bunch of dudes that wanted to rock super hard, and did exactly that and nothing else. I wasn't shocked by anything out of the ordinary here. Wasn't really blown away by anything, except for some top notch screaming. These guys wrote "Smoke on The Water," the song thats apparently the easiest song to play on guitar, so I can't say they were necessarily rock innovators. But hey I enjoyed head banging to this, and honestly will probably rock to it again.
True to its name, this album really rocks. I like the dueling solos between guitar & organ which became their trademark. Ian Gillan has a great hard rock voice, like Robert Plant. Lyrics are lame.
This one fell flat for me. lots of guitar shredding, but just felt bland. maybe because all of the classic rock i listened to when i was younger
The music in "Bloodsucker" is actually pretty good.
With a stiff upper lip, reckoned I would’ve scored this high before listening... but the [impressive] solos dragged on for so long. If your epic song changes dramatically halfway through, then turn it into 2 songs. Black night a ripper
hört sich ned schlecht an, aber die fans waren damals den musikerinnen egal - 3
Alright. I find Deep Purple less interesting than some of their contemporaries. 6/10
Very generic sounding tbh 2.5
The organ is spectacular.
good for a classic rock album, i like mix of long songs and shorter songs. they all started to mesh together though in theme, it seemed like they were trying to hard to be macho rock n rollers.
I don't know. It was fine.
Best lekkere gitaar maar ook wel wat nare nummers
Fast and fun. Nothing too crazy
Yeah, tvättäkta gubbrock, det e najs blir sugen på att spela guitar hero. Dock inget jag skulle lyssna mycket på.
Very good hard rock album. Child In Time is amazing, Bloodsucker is also pretty great. The rest is ok. I just don't feel like there's a lot of substance here. Good listen but not something I will often come back to.
This rocks! Songs meander a little too much sometimes. Favourite was Child in Time.
Standout tracks: 1, 3, 4. Nice to hear a good Purple record without any of the usual radio fare. 3 stars
They really got to jammin it seems. Good shape for things to come
Child in time kida, ostalo ok
Is kiss and sabbath had a baby. Fun listen 3.5
Chile in time bekannt, sehr schön
Weird.
This was exactly what I expected.
Classic classic rock. Again, cool to hear the roots of stuff but not super into it.
3.5 stars
Didn’t really enjoy
My Uncle Paul is watching me today because this was his favorite band ahah
Nothing particularly special
Okay so historically hard rock/heavy metal doesn’t do much for me, and this record didn’t push the needle too far from my established opinion. However, I can recognize the merit in it. I liked when the songs deviated from the traditional gritty, gravelly vocals of hard rock and went somewhere a littles softer—something it dabbled in, but ultimately never pursued beyond a song like “Child In Time” (which is arguably its best track). It’s ultimately a solid, undeniable rock album, but its pockets of experimentation and slow-burn growth held my favorite moments. STAND-OUT TRACK: “Child In Time” HONORABLE MENTIONS: “Into The Fire”, “Living Wreck”
They’re at their best when they’re jamming and not screeching…but even then it gets old fast. Likes: Child in Time
If I were 13, I would give it five stars.
Meh did not like it. It’s the kind of rock I don’t vibe with. I reserve my 1 star for worse things
Can’t say I enjoyed this
It was ok but I wanted it to be finished by the end
So dated. And pretty fundamentally uninteresting. The songs don’t land, and they show far too little sonic variety. Bah. 2.5?
Not something I would choose to listen to
ok
Solid, if cheesy. But really just okay.
It's not bad, but I'm just so bored listening.
below average
Spade, energi og langt hår Men den der vokal........ Jeg er glad for, at der ikke er ligeså uproportioneret mange, der lyder sådan længere Highlights: into the fire 2.6
not as good as Joni Mitchell’s Blue
more heavy/progressive rock from deep purple. Not nearly as good as machine head. Just a couple of good songs on here. I like the band overall, but this album just did not do much for me
³cd 4
Could never take to Deep Purple. Rock pioneers with good guitar work sometimes, sure. But it all feels a bit try hard.
Disappointing.
About as early 70s hard rock as early 70s hard rock rocks. Features all the widdly, widdly wah of a Zeppelin record, but none of the stuff that makes those albums worth listening to. Not to say Deep Purple ripped off Zeppelin (it seems Deep Purple came first) but the same people commenting that they miss "real music" under Zeppelin live performances will do the same here and have a good time. I am not inane and boring enough to believe that music stopped being an artform after David Crosby got sober, so I'm acutely aware that white guys goin' at it for 10 minutes is not the be all, end all. Bonus points for a keyboardist who's usually doing something weird, bonus points lost for the amount of high notes our leading man squeals out.
this is worse than the doors…
Best: #1 Speed King
The other one was better
Some may say that the excessively long instrumental solo is a lost art, I am not one of them. Yet more indulgent and ultimately very samey 70s rock. A generational sound that, for me, does not span the ages.
Appreciated some of the guitar riffs, but not much else. Not for me
Machine Head is such a better lp. This LP feels like they wrote it in a day
This felt like what that Andy Warhol soup can painting would sound like.
This probably fucked if you heard it live but this album was kinda boring :x Bloodsucker was good tho
Early heavy metal
Not a big fan of this over the top heavy metal. Made me think of leprechauns dancing around a scale model of Stonehenge…
Grandpa rock. Not terrible but not for me.
This was bad
Has potential, not my vibe
Peñazo. No me he guardado nada y me he aburrido bastante.
I can see how this rocks, not in the mood. Too much squealing and extended guitar/keys for me today
This is probably a very unpopular opinion, especially with the recent addition of one of these tracks on Stranger Things... But I just didn't like it. I am not really a fan, full stop, of this genre of music, and I really don't think I ever will be. There was nothing 'wrong' per se with any of the album or any of the tracks, they just were not my taste at all. This was one of those albums where I was just sitting, waiting for it to finish, because I didn't want to listen to any more of it. Heavier music really just kind of puts me off a bit because I struggle to connect to it in any way. Again, I understand that this opinion will be unpopular to most, but it is just my preferred styles of music that have made me form this opinion. As I said, there was nothing specifically wrong with this. I think that it is an album that knows its sound and achieved what it wanted; unfortunately, it just really wasn't for me. I couldn't really think of any that stood out to me, as I had very similar feelings towards all of the tracks.
Du rock un peu trop old school à mon goût
ça y est j'en ai marre
Technically proficient but not very memorable otherwise
Lots of keys. Nothing that stood out from anything else during that time.
Does nothing for me. 2/5
lo mejor fue el studio chat muy divertido
At least it's not Robbie Williams
Was pretty average overall never finished it
not for me
Too rocky
Haven’t heard any of these songs before this as far as I know. It’s not my thing though, this style along with those vocal wails I can’t do.
i literally don't care bro alternate review: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LnLs19iXEWg
Why are there so many Deep Purple albums on this list?
Deep Purple in Rock Child in Time is a brilliant bit of hokum, and probably the only time when the bombast of the music and their silly pretentiousness creates a sense of dramatic interest. Otherwise it generally either feels more Spinal Tap than Spinal Tap, the organ solo in Speed Master is pure Viv Savage for example, or its feels more Kula Shaker than Kula Shaker, particularly on Flight of the Rat. It’s by no means a bad album, and its unintentional silliness is fun, but I don’t think it will bear a great deal of repeat listening, so I’ll go for a high 2. 🟣🟣 Playlist submission: Child in Time
Familiar with band but this just didn't grab me
Not too bad but also generic dad rock.
me gustó el disco. pero poco más que agregar la verdad. por decir algo, me atrapó desde el primer tema (o la intro a mi criterio) y se siente la continuidad entre canción y canción
Not quite my jam. The psychedelic stuff was more fun, but this leaned a lot towards stadium rock/hair metal of the 70s/80s which I do not particularly enjoy. Not terrible, but I would not listen again
I feel like it's not that special. I did not finish it. It just seemed okay. Maybe it's praised because they were the first to sound like that. I didn't feel for it.
You need to be in the right mood for this album. It’s powerful, intense, but can at times it can just be awful cacophony, screeching, repetitive bars to make you go insane (I’m looking at the keyboards and synth on Hard Lovin’ Man here). PROCEED WITH CAUTION AND KNOW WHAT YOU ARE GETTING YOURSELF INTO. Ian Gillan undoubtedly has a great voice and some of these songs are great, I tended to prefer the beginning to the breakdown chaos of the end, but hey maybe if I wasn’t a regular city commuter trying to bring peace into my morning routine as I listen and instead a punk cruising down a coastal highway with a cigarette over my window I would be totally in the mood for this.
Vhg
Probably great when it came out
Pretty alright. Flight of the Rat was my stand out. Not a lot else did tho. 4.5/10
didn't listen - just can't w deep purple - giving a symbolic 2
50 % genius (the guitars), 50% parody (vocals/lyrics - really?). 100% ridiculous. Ill stick with Space Trucker thank you very much. At least that song keeps it under 5 min.
Songs would get almost kind of funky, bluesy and fun - and then that dude would start screeching like his nuts were caught in his zipper and I couldn't hang.
Disappointing album, not at all what Deep Purple we’re about. Lacked groove.
It's not my thing. The singer screams too much in the songs for me, and I just don't see myself vibing with the music. The songs are too long and too repetitive for me, and the screaming is something I can't really get over. It's not even the metal or punk kind of scream singing, which I have an appeal for. The guitar solos are nice, but they happen so often I feel like they're not special, and it makes me appreciate the less. I wouldn't listen again, but I understand how other people would like it though, I'm not here to yuck someone else's yum.
I only knew these guys as the "Smoke On the Water". Now I know why. 42 minutes of uninspired rock. "Child In Time" wasn't too bad tho
No soy muy fan de la música instrumental, ya lo decidí
Pretty boring... A lasting feeling that the songs were made on improv' and never improved. Child in Time is great at first, but the solo just ruins everything. It serves no purpose, breaks the rhythm, the mood, everything, for 2:30 minutes before getting back to the song. This solo is like putting add for another track inside Child in Time. Perchance. Exception of the album, Black Night was really great.
Band that I know of, and album which I have definitely listened to before. From the intro, you know what you're going to get and it is a good dad rock ol time. Loving the selection of instruments and solos. Thought I would enjoy but not really enjoy as dad rock is a weird genre for me, but 3 songs I was having a good time but then it all became a bit samey and bit predictable. It's okay to listen to as background 'dad rock' music, but the interest dies out once you stop being enamoured by solos and lack of substance.
I guess now I've listened to more than just Smoke on the Water and Highway Star. Legitimately heavy shit.
Nope, not for me, I know a lot of people like this but I dislike the organ, and the dirty old recording studio sound. It's not bad but it's just not for me.
It has a few scattered moments of greatness, but it's really hard to drag them out from the mess surrounding them.
Ian Paice is a darn good drummer, and I would love to sound like Jon Lord on organ, but I've never wanted to revisit DP even if I got immense respect for most of them as musicians. Child in Time is a banger but the rest of the album is forgettable and Ian Gillan's high parts irritate me on every song.
The organ in this was kind of fun, but overall it was pretty generic stuff. Maybe more groundbreaking in 1970
114. idk
This is definitely rock music, nothing special
Turns out I'm definitely a Mod not a Rocker.
Once is enough of this! Not as bad as Guns n Roses.
I thought I might be able to tolerate this because it was so early that maybe it would sound like Zeppelin or Sabbath, but nope. This sounded too much like heavy metal of the type that I cannot abide in the slightest, and therefore I hated it. I am sure that 16 year olds in 1970 had a really bitchin’ time jumping their dirt bikes over piles of broken refrigerators to this album but when I was 16 I was sitting inside by myself reading sci-fi and listening to Billy Joel, so I have no nostalgia towards this type of music and think it is terrible. That high pitched heavy metal scream is the single lamest thing in the world other than this album cover. Ugh.
4/10
Ok
Nothing really memorable
1/3. Not bad by any means (actually pretty well recorded and produced), just not a standout in any way. None of the riffs really grabbed me, and with the billion other great rock records out there, this would never be in the top or even middle of my mind to reach for or recommend.
Normal
Didn't enjoy this one really. First song was a Little Richard medley and the rest was just fine. Cool album cover, though.
These guys are better than Spinal Tap at keeping a straight face while making absurd music with ridiculous lyrics.
Was ok. Not sure if I just wasn’t in the mood for it.
Maybe it's the long jams, maybe it's listening to this right after the more obvious musicianship of Led Zeppelin, but I found myself impatiently waiting for the end of this so I could move on to the next one.
still talking?
The first album here that I’ve found truly boring
Good rock sound but really couldn’t get into this album.
Like Led Zeppelin but worse in every way. Drumming was pretty good though.
Nope, I've never been a Deep Purple fan. Bloated is the word that comes to mind listening to this album.
Not bad, but not good. Machine Head is the only Deep Purple record that should be on this list. Also one of the dumbest album covers ever.
Another one that is not my vibe. Child in Time I added to my list but Im thinking im not a fan of most old school rock music.
This was decent. Some good guitar work and some head-bangy passages.
1.5
Not remotely awful, but simply Not My Thing in any way.
This was my first deep purple album and I’ll be honest I thought they were supposed to be a mellow kind of band. So this was a shock. I didn’t dislike it, but I didn’t like it. I think expectations might have interfered with that because the music was pretty good and with a nice raw sound.
This was a joyless exercise in listening for the sake of listening. I like rock, but I didn’t like this at all.
That was a lot.
not my type of music really
I could listen to this album 10x, then be shown a 20 second snippet and I would have no idea what song it came from.
Very ok. Very not memorable.
I did enjoy this album. Some amazing guitar solos on some songs. However it didn’t really grab me like I thought it would after the first 2 songs
Ne zamee ... istko k back to black
Heavy on noise and not much else 2-3
Not their finest hour. Guitars and organs are fuzzed out and a little meandering. More psychedelic than much of their catalog, but they are at their best when swinging the metal hammer.
Stand-out tracks: Speed King, Into the Fire, Living Wreck I'm not a fan of the longer tracks on this album which turns out to be most of the album. Leaving me only to a enjoy a few tracks to a certain degree which is why I consider this a bit of a dud. I'm not super familiar with metal and how much metal this is, but there are certainly a few moments where the tracks ramped up, sometimes to an unpleasant degree. Not a fan of intentionally unpleasant sounds thrown into the mix, and not in a dissonant sense, rather a "make your ears hurt" kind of sense. Overall, the few tracks I like aren't enough to save this album from a bad grade.
Highlights: Speed King, Bloodsucker, Living Wreck First time listening to the record, but I was aware of its existence because of a Jojo reference (Speed King) and a Let 3 song with the same name as Child in Time but nothing else in common (wasn't a cover but it was a reference). Love me some 70's rock with organs, so it was nice to see them make such a grandiose appearance - to the point where the record could be named Organs in Rock. For some reason Child in Time didn't click with me. It's a bit too much for my taste - both because of its length but also braggadocios solos. Actually, a good number of the tracks overall are quite long for no reason and that is a bit off-putting. I lean toward their faster tracks like Hush, Highway Star and Space Truckin', and these drawn out songs with solos feel like a whole different thing. I guess I'll like Machine Head better. The record, however, does deserve respect for being one of the foundational hard rock records, just not as much as Led Zeppelin's contemporary output. Won't be revisiting this record anytime soon, but the highlights will remain in my hard rock rotation.
Nothing special
What is this shit?
Better than the Otha shit. 2!
Back to more artists my Dad adored when I was a kid. This feels very Hendrixy and very Led Zeppeliny but then also a bit Yesy. It's precisely the type of thing he was destined to love. I think this is alright but it didn't really click with me in the way something like Black Sabbath did when I first heard it. I think the prog parts are the bits I struggle with - in general I like the metal parts much better. Too much guitar noodling and keyboard noodling for my patience overall, particularly on the longer songs. They even managed *drum noodling* on Flight of the Rat. I do want to briefly call out the album cover: it looks like something Terry Gilliam might have made for Monty Python and I love it. Should be a 2.5 and was on for a 3 until the last few tracks, but I really lost patience with it so: 2/5
Yuck. Okay… I can understand why people like this so much. The musicianship is fine. It’s a rock album that sounds a bit different to what else was on offer in 1970. The drumming is good, sure. However, horrible singing, horrible lyrics. Guitar solos where there doesn’t need to be a guitar solo. The songs seem to last forever even if they’re sub-5 minutes. I genuinely abhor songs like Child in Time; people really love to cherish a song like this. I don’t get it. But like what you like, I don’t care. Personally, this has fallen in a generated slot close to Led Zep II and Superunknown by Soundgarden, both of which blow this out the water on every single level, particularly the vocals and guitar playing. It didn’t stand a chance. I don’t think Deep Purple will ever be for me but I’ll give it a 2/5 based on understanding why it would appeal to other people and I enjoyed some of the drumming. Male, pale and stale. Best: Speed King Worst: Child in Time
I mean. It's metal.
This is that kind of dated hippie rock which only boomers with zero cultural or self awareness might enjoy. Album cover sucks — riffs go kind of hard though. —Noah Not my thing. I could see how at a time when this genre hasn’t been pioneered this would be cool. But not to me in this contemporary moment… -Ruby
Needs more purple.
Good early heavy metal, the singer's voice turned me off though.
It’s fine
I had a dilemma: what to spend my free time on, this or femboy futa house. I regret my choice
Annoying but not terrible
Just not for me. Dissociated while listening mostly.
Bem hard rock e vibes mais heavy metal, oq nao é mt a minha cena Não gostei mt nhe
Bit much for me.
Did I know prior: No Favorite song: Speed King More instrumental than I expected. Fun at times, but didn't move me. Found it to be repetitive and some of the guitar & organ solos were grating.
I don't love the screaming and the voice really but the tunes go quite hard and it's not bad but I don't think I'll want to listen to that again really.
This the THIRD Deep Purple album I have had in under 200 days and folks I am sick of it
This album was probably great for early heavy metal fans. It probably was awesome while high. It probably was great live. But to my 2026 ears, it sounds dated, meandering, and forgettable. Also, this has to be one of the dumbest album covers I’ve ever seen. And the hard panning at the end was nauseating.
Definitely too hard rock for me. A lot of this album just sounds like noise (derogatory). When the vocals weren't screaming and the guitar and organ got solos, it was tolerable. I hear the 70s Led Zeppelin influences for sure. Listened twice
Bestimmt voll wichtig und so. Aber warum muss der denn immer so schreien....
I wanted To Enjoy it more
This album would be enjoyed more by my parents than me. Some cool instrumental solos.
Were any animals harmed in the making of this album? Those anguished howls passed off as singing had me worried.
In order to make a great hard rock album, there’s a very simple trick - pull together a band and make sure that one person is named Ian. Don’t believe me? Ask Judas Priest, The Cult, Fugazi, Jethro Tull, Minor Threat, hell even Joy Division, Europe and The Stone Roses used the Ian trick to take their styles of ‘rock’ to the charts with an Ian on board. The Rolling Stones original lineup featured an Ian. True story. But, with the release of this album, Deep Purple took it too far and broke the rule - you can never have MORE than one Ian in the band. On this album, there’s one Ian singing and another Ian on drums. This can ever work. The Ians cancel each other out. In fact, this is the only time in the history of rock where two Ians have attempted to exist in the same band at the same time. King Crimson had an Ian who left the band and was replaced with another Ian. Jen’s favorite troubadours, Fairport Convention, did the same, no doubt because they were aware of the need to keep an Ian in the band. These facts demonstrate what should be abundantly clear by now - Deep Purple went one Ian too far with this album and the result is an uneven, screamy mess - organ riffs galore, guitar screeches to the tune of a manatee in the middle of an unnatural birth, and an Ian viciously howling for no apparent reason throughout most of this noise fetish. Please learn from their mistake. Never gather with more than one Ian at a time. Nothing good can come of it.
A mix of 70s hard rock and stoner music.
Of course I already knew the one song. That one that’s universally mandated to be the first song every guitar student learns. Based almost entirely on that song alone I decided long ago that a deeper dive into this group’s catalog was not necessary. Having now listened to *this* album (which does not include *that* song) I stand by my decision. It’s fine. In fact if I had taken that deeper dive way back when, I likely would have quite enjoyed it. They absolutely fit the mold of what I was into back then & in no way are they any worse than any of the others I was into. There were absolutely parts where I thought “ok, this is not bad.” Those vocals tho—I’m out. 2stars plus a tip of the cap for being significant & influential in their scene.
not my favourite and doesn't stand out to other albums similar in genre like nirvana but great instrumentals
Prehistoric (hard) rock. A bit of a snoozer for me
is this the GREAT Deep Purple everybody talks about?
Bitter
too much going on.
Electric guitar solos are not something I generally enjoy.
I enjoy deep purple but this was a painful listen.
I used to appreciate this type of music more when I was a teenager.
they had some epic drum solos but besides like the hits from classic rock i’m just finding it not to be for me.
Every time they sang it made it worse. Talented guitarists for sure, but it’s not my thing.
This is fine (despite an overly long song or two) but it is not as good as the other Deep Purple on this list — and really that means it shouldn’t be on this list.
I couldn't do it. Listened for 30 seconds and just wasn't willing to give it a shot. It isn't you, it is me.
Never listened to Deep Purple other than their hits. I was not expecting to like it much but Child in Time was good. Not a huge fan of the vocals otherwise
Get organs out of rock.
Boring, trying too hard to be prog that it fails as classic rock, not quite good enough to be prog rock, just a bit of a slog of noodling nonsense.
boy i really didn't care for this thing at all 1.5/5 probably. i didnt skip tho so lets round up to 2
Favorite song: Child In Time Notes: most of it sounded like those random hard songs in guitar hero. There wasn't much that got me excited about it. Score: 6/10
Too many guitar solos and songs just took forever to build up. Couldn’t get into it. Favorite Song(s): Flight of the Rat
Gar nicht meins 2/5
Was ok, never really got into Deep Purple or any of the heavy rock stuff, it has been copied so many times that I can't listen to it objectively, I think of a million shit bands playing Desertfest
Deep Purple has all the makings of a band I would love, but it just never clicked for me.
Heavy riffs. Hear a lot of influence in early Nirvana and grunge. Just not for me.
Found this really uninteresting, but it seems like an album that would start to hit by listen #5
This kind of music sounds goofy as hell to me, its truly hard to imagine that anyone took this seriously. If it's a joke I like the joke, but I would never actually listen to this for like, pleasure or to feel things.
Only 27 albums in and this is the 2nd Deep Purple already! I like to focus on the positive so…I'm getting them out of the way and there’s only one left. This was more tolerable than Made in Japan or whatever it’s called. Quick recap: I LOVE many albums and bands from this era and genre but the Purps ain’t one of them. I tried as a kid and I’m trying again now, but sorry they just aren’t doing it for me. This one gets a better score than the previous one because Bloodsucker and Flight of the Rat annoyed me less. I know they can play but what they do with those abilities I find futile.
I like all the playing, love the organ when it shows up, and I'm a fan of singer Ian Gillian ever since Jesus Christ Superstar (If you only know the movie version, Gillian on the original Broadway leaves that poor imitation in the cave. Way better Judas and Pilate on the movie one though. I digress.) But these songs just sounds like it all occupy the same comfortable safe hard rock niche give Machine Head a listen for way more passion, fun, and range.
Loved Deep Purple when I was in high school. Was ready for this album to be over though.
I still don’t get the 70s
It's acid rock and never much did much for me.
I'm sorry to all my fan out there, but I don't like :(
I was expecting seizure :/
2 stars
appreciate deep purple for inspiring so many bands is like, but they'll take it from here
Hmmmmmmmmmmmm this went on forever. None of it was bad but it was so much. So much guitar.
It’s not bad, but I didn’t like it
This album artwork is atrocious
De fundal. Rock
2.8: Some cool riffs and organ, a few cool tracks, guitar and organ collabed well, but overall I didn’t like it too much. Genre of rock I am not drawn to
Not horrible, but didn’t really get the penis erect
Deep Purple is so boring
Ok
non
Ah, meh!
Deep Purple has so much talent. Ian Gillan’s voice is unparalleled in the rock pantheon. But their talents did not include songwriting or restraint. Even their occasional really great songs (Sweet Child in Time, for instance) are unnecessarily bloated. There’s no need to have 3 crescendos in one song, much less four!!?! I love some of what they have to offer, in limited doses. But as an album, this is a 2.
Not my genre, but appreciated the blend of rock and slower percussion/psychedelic interludes. Definitely feels very 70s.
Molt de solo de guitarra, m'agrada que es disc obri amb un molt top. Pero no m'ha matat, en general molt guitarra
Apart from Child in Time I can't rate this album
Ned so mis… All in all intressanti time capsule aber jez ned eppis woni wieder wird lose
psychadelic hard rock is just not my bag. Also wayyy too much distortion and muddy sounds here, I checked the write-up and supposedly its intended to emulate a live performance, in which case, why? It burdens the whole listening experience, dont get me wrong, great instrumentals at times, but man do they just wander aimlessly a lot.
Not my bag, but certainly not bad. Loved the drum solo on “Flight of the Rat”. Got queasy on the last track from the left and right panning of sound.
liked child in time but I didn't really enjoy listening to any of the other songs
Like…. It’s okay. There’s some fun riffs. Great great great opener that then just sort of keeps going a bit too long. And at one point there’s a drum solo that just did absolutely nothing. The Joe jonas of drum solos. Why did everyone have to do a drum solo at one point what was that all about? 2.5/5.0 No best song they were all pretty much the same.
Kjapp instrumentjokking.
Dissapointed to get another rock album, but the instrumentation was really good so I enjoyed it enough.
meh
A little bit to heavy
Machine Head is Deep Purple at its best with classics such as Smoke on the Water and Space Trunkin’, this album not so much. The songs are more aggressive and discordant. They lack in melody and restraint. Not a favorite.
Meh
This is all fine but it’ss a bit Spinal Tap for me.
