Reviews (page 9 of 12)

Tight musicianship, not always inspired, the tracks are good but I don't like how it sounds 3.5

Good album, with child in time. Like the vibe, although it isnt for an everyday listen.

If this album had a smell it would be BO and beer farts. Some major riffage but overall drab. More of a light beige than a deep purple

This album rocks hard but gets old and boring fast. The lead singer and lead guitar both can whale. The production on this album SUCKS. Also, the guitar work (while technically awesome) has that hollow 70's sound and I wish there was some crunch and more full chords in there. I like the rawness of the songs and I can see a lot of thrash metal being influenced by this band. I do not think that many of the songs are very catchy however and this isn't an album that I see a lot of replay value in. The song "Child in Time" has a very cool melody and amazing guitar work. This is a good album that really encapsulates the early 70s hard rock scene. 3/5

Liked the guitar and percussion on this album. A lot better than I was kind of expecting.

It would have been higher, but two songs could have been cut in half. The first halves of both were instrumental which is fine, but the second it ended the whole song changed into another song. It was 2 songs in 1 but it didn’t work

I was expecting it to be a bit worse.

Not listening I refuse

Right from the first notes, the influence of this album is very noticeable. One the first 2 heavy metal albums (Black Sabbath beat it by 4 months). It’s definitely more metal than Zeppelin I When it blends back towards classic rock or even Prog rock, can be very good. Child In Time is a great song, builds into intense peaks. 6.6/10

Generic classic rock album with good music and simple lyrics. 3 stars

Cha ta cool pero no biggie

It was a fine rock album. Speed King is the best song and I liked the organ.

Sounds like something spinal tap would write. I’m sure it’s a great live gig but all the songs just flounder and have no cohesion. Still enjoyable to listen to just nothing special for me. Rating: 2.7

Generally good stuff

Child in time is great.but parts of the 'Bloodsucker' riff perilously close to Whole Lotta Love.and 'flight of the rat' is Communication breakdown. Also, I don't like the organ - it doesn't belong.

It’s alright.

Massive JC Superstar vibes from the lead singer, which turned out to make more sense once I realized it was the same guy. Good album. Nothing stands out but all of it was very enjoyable.

This needed some follow up albums or sequels exploring the theme: “Deep Purple in Jazz?” “Deep Purple in Pop?” “Deep Purple in Hip Hop?” “Deep Purple in Electronica?” So much potential there. Instead we just get rock. It’s good rock. Classic, even.

Deep Purple may be the most obvious evolutionary link between classic rock and heavy metal I have ever heard.

I enjoy this quite a bit at times. Side two drones on a bit too much. 3.5

Bastante rollo.

This album is really what pushed Deep Purple from psychedelic rock into hard rock or metal, but it’s also one of their least interesting albums I’ve heard. Their earlier Concerto for Group and Orchestra was a wonderfully weird prog-rock romp, and the later Machine Head and live Made in Japan set the standard for what hard rock should be. In Rock was a transition, and it has some cool elements of prog-rock (the 7-10-minutes each “Child in Time” and “Flight of the Rat”) and metal (“Speed King” and “Bloodsucker”). A deluxe version of this album contains “Black Night” which was recorded in the same sessions but only released as a single. I can’t really see why that was left off the album, it’s as good or better than most of the rest of the stuff on the album.

This is what a non-farcical Spinal Tap would sound like. A bass guitar that weighs a ton, drums that bash into the earth like a meteor, a singer with bombastic bell-bottom jeans, and guitar spitting volcanic magma. So I was also wondering what is meant with the purple euphemism... either a colorful acid trip or the dank exhaust from an obscenely jacked up muscle car lurching along a side street with the driver blazing on a fat blunt.

Didn’t scratch the surface I’m afraid.

Solid. Makes me want to grow a big moustache

Some great instrumental sections here, but some overly long solos and irritating vocals bring it down as a whole. Can hear this had a lot of influence afterwards.

I cant believe I used to love this band. It kinda sucked all these years later.

Just not my kind of rock

This is ok for me, I liked Bloodsucker and Into the Fire.

Meh...OK, I guess. Wouldn't go out of my way to listen to this again

Not quite the right rock opus that Machine Head is, but still solid. A little more sprawling and all over the place. I can see how these guys inspired a lot of early metal. I have gained knowledge and respect for them beyond the Guitar Hero 3 smoke on the water band

Jon Lord is one badass keyboard player. Got to see their original lineup in 1988. Great show and at the time wasn't a big fan. This is "I'm on LSD playing early heavy metal at its finest.

Child in time ist gut. Rest ok, bin aber kein Fan.

Not a bad classic rock album, but a lot of the songs went on way too long. The organ solo especially were a little much.

This just reminds me of my dad! It's great rock music, but it’s not for me.

Raaaack

Redeemed Deep Purple (I never liked Smoke on the Water), but a little too much organ for me.

Standout Tracks: "Speed King," "Child in Time" Lyrics/Vocals- 3/5 Instrumentals- 5/5 Vibes- 4/5 Overall- 3/5 This was a good album, but truthfully nothing really stood out about it to me. Nothing left a lasting impression, but it was a good listen, especially for acid rock fans. You can see where a lot of classic rock musicians got inspiration from this album.

Expected to like this a lot more than I did

It's aight.

Great guitar work. Kind of generic as far as rock goes. Didn't really speak to my tastes.

It was a decent album. I did not recognize any of the songs, but I listened to it without any issues. I would not have guessed that Deep Purple warranted three albums on the list though.

Early metal. Little bit of psychedelic influence

Time for some more classic metal! This time, I'm looking at Deep Purple In Rock. Deep Purple has never been the biggest name in metal, but I think they served as an important stepping stone for the early foundations of metal. Obviously they weren't quite as important as a band like Black Sabbath for instance, but they've got some well known songs and albums, like this one! Anyways, this album's pretty alright. I like the sound. It's cool and the guitar solos are even cooler. I love a good guitar solo, and Ritchie Blackmore delivers some great ones in this album. The songs focus more on quality than quantity, with there only being 7. Fortunately, they're quite good. There's some variety in the writing, which is practically a godsend for early albums like these. The singing isn't bad. Overall, this is a fun album that serves as a good representation of early 70s metal. High 3/5. Barely misses that spark it needs to be a 4.

Favorites: Speed King (awesome keyboards). Classic Rock

Loved the guitar. The singing was awful.

As I don't always love this genre with its long guitar solos, this one had moments when I was truly enjoying it. Followed by more long ass solos. If I try to average my rating dial, it was more often in the three zone, but I would like to acknowledge those moments that really rocked!

This one kind of missed me today. There were moments in many of the tracks that were attractive, but overall, it was just not all that appealing.

I did not much appreciate this today. It came through as just so much noise. I didn't find any tracks particularly attractive or catchy. Could just be me today.

Good tone and feel to this, but no stand-out tracks for me

Was like listening to whole lotta love by led zeppelin over and over

A bit of everything

Bastante rollo.

Very much not my kind of rock music.

These tracks sound better live than in the studio, so Made in Japan has to get a higher rating than this.

The sound of driving down the highway in a car with hand crank windows rolled down. The falsetto screaming around track three got my attention in a bad way.

Really liked some parts of this, others not so much

*smokes a fat reefer in 1970*

I loved Deep Purple as a kid so there’s a lot of nostalgia. Musically it’s a great band. Lyrically terrible.

Typical 70’s rock. Not overtly impressed.

Love Deep Purple. This album, not my favorite.

grow out your hair & sideburns, put on some bellbottoms, belt out a long "AAAAH" as high as you possibly can, & keep on truckin'.

Gitaarkunst, vooral bij Child in Time. Helaas hou ik niet zo van gitaarkunst.

Rough and edgy, very early D.P. I hadn't heard most of the songs.

It rocks. But like, not enough.

Machine Head was better

Solid rock album but nothing special.

This one’s all about “Child in Time.” If you dig that song then the odds are good you’ll remember it and remember this album. If not, then the whole thing probably falls into the category of a collection of overlong rock tunes that never quite compete with Led Zeppelin. I like “Child in Time” and still think the other songs are mostly too long and lacking in melody and lyrics that really stick in the brain. “Into the Fire” stood out on this listen and I really like a lot of the guitar playing throughout. But yeah - Deep Purple continues to be one of those bands that means more to other musicians I like than they mean to me.

Didn't really catch my attention.

I tend to find a lot of ‘70s hard rock pretty boring, and while this doesn’t really escape the limitations of that genre for me, it does have a lot of energy.

Its certainly not bad music. Its just not really a genre I care for most of the time

some really great sounds throughout, unfortunately I think too many songs are too long to be listened to casually

literally only 2 of the songs are available on spotify lmfuckingao. i mean theyre okay

Blind album, know the artist. Good listen but maybe no all the time. Very similar style across all the tracks and maybe a bit cleaner would've been better?

Another one that I liked well enough, but not quite enough to grab my attention. Fun hard rock. I admittedly didn’t devote a whole lot of attention to it, playing it on my phone while driving. Not bad, not particularly memorable.

Not really my thing, but good for what it is

Stressig.

Paar leuke nummers erop

Would be a 3.5

they like to jam out. Usually not a fan of extended guitar/drum sessions with little words but this was good. Nothing amazing, but good.

Best song - Child In Time

Rather meh, but good for background music

Ehh, ok, kinda like 1984 van halen

Child in time probably my favorite but overall an okay album

Half the tracks on the linked Spotify 2018 remaster of the album are not playable. Listening to the 1995 anniversary edition instead.

Very good. I see a lot of influence here that’s shown in other more recent alt music

I love Deep Purple, but haven't heard this album before. Not as good as Machine Head, but it has the sound. Rod Evans' vocals are as powerful as always, but I don't enjoy the 60s inspired trippiness as much as the hard rock sound they carry to future albums. Solid album, but not genre defining.

Child in Time is a masterpiece of a song, the rest of the album is all right.

It's loud, and the guitars are blaring, but it's just... too... dad rock for me.

I like this blend of heavy metal and hard rock, even though those are two genres I generally don't care for. There's enough variance and skill here to keep someone like me interested, even during 5+ minute songs. More of a 3.5.

Not quite prog, not quite hard, mountain as soil rather than edifice. It's very nice to hear a seven-track album that's this much fun.

I only knew this band from Smoke on the Water, so this album surprised me in a good way. It is the exact sound I think of when someone says classic rock n roll. If you love guitar riffs you will love this album. Outside of the guitar though this album didn't stand out to me. My favorite track was child in time.

Kind of rock that makes me yawn. I just don’t get it.

Good rock and roll from people who I didn't think shredded so hard.

Deep purple, a bit too much of the same for this album. Doesn't have Smoke, highway star but a good cohesive album. Not my favorite.

Is Deep Purple prog rock? Or proto prog rock?

Pleasantly surprised by this. The ethos of turn everything up is noticeable and works in a not unpleasant way. Not a prog or a metal fan, but this early 70s stuff is growing on me. I think I might prefer this to Led Zep? The guitar work is very intricate in places and do like the heavy sound when Blackmore isn't fiddling around. Not sure about the keyboard stuff, but is a product of the time with the tech available. But generally very good. A high 3.

Everyone needs a ten minute song like Child in Time every once in a while. Not a regular listen though.

Enjoyable but didn't stand out much to me

Old school rock, niet (meer) voor mij

Was Machine Head this prog-y? I like this one a lot more because of it, it feels way more earned when something aggressively happened, as it comes to be a payoff rather than only a simple hook. Still a three, as it feels a little generic biker rock at times, but this is at least cool, especially for 1970.

This record was fine. Solid early 70s hard rock record, but nothing stands out as special to me.

Solid rock album from a 70's icon.

Deep Purple is definitely some very rowdy and some very rockin' Rock and Roll. No denying that. Yeah it's good to listen to and check it out, but it is that great? Tough to say.

Solid listen, but not my thing

Strong guitar, not my favorite singer

classic late 60s, early 70s. The album art though is off the chain!!! I think i could do better w/ my iphone today

Hadn't listened to much of their music outside of the millions of times they run on Classic Rock radio due to stuff like Smoke on the Water, but I think always had a good appreciation of where they stood within the rock/metal pantheon. I think this is a good entry point into their music. Fairly economical songs, and a great guitar record.

Very good Rock Album! Some great tracks but not all hits.

A lot heavier than I thought it would be, some great riffs and guitar work, no songs stood out though but quite liked the album

Child In Time крутая, остальное не особо запомнилось

Starts up fast and never stops until the end. Not a bad listen.

I can get the quality of these songs, but they will always sound a bit dated for me. Deep Purple is one of the few classic rock bands that almost never catch me and always sound like old grandpas trying to be cool.

Not as sold on this one compared to machine head. Decent listen overall, but nothing to go crazy over.

Genres: Hard rock, heavy metal Formed: London, England in 1968 Run time: 7 songs, 43 min, 25 sec The fourth studio album by the English rock band. The lyrics are often thought provoking and the topics and references are varied. For me though, it can sometimes get a little self indulgent. Spotify: Least popular song: >33k Most popular song: almost 80M. \"Speed King\" is a nod to 1950s rock and roll with hard rock elements. It references/name checks Little Richard and Chuck Berry, both trail blazers in Rock ‘n’ Roll. The second part of the song refers to the working man’s practice of taking his weekly wage, then blowing it all while enjoying life. “Bloodsucker” is about a mysterious man who wants to give love and live life to the fullest. The lyrics clearly show he’s more into living life to the fullest than giving love, so I think he's hoping to have his cake and eat it. “Child In Time” is about innocence in a chaotic world. It’s about good vs evil. It is a warning that actions have consequences, but it warns that the innocent may get caught up in the misdeeds of others. I cannot stand the screaming in this track and generally press skip… “Flight of the Rat” is about breaking the chains holding us back and making us miserable. We can then live and grow and become what we want. It’s about failing, trying again and succeeding. We look at the rat leaving (the sinking ship) as a negative, but the fact is the rat is a survivor. It doesn’t hang around when something has failed, it moves on. “Into the Fire” is about being honest with yourself. It’s also about taking responsibility for one's actions and the consequences. “Living Wreck” is about the singer feeling repulsed by a woman who he has been taken in by. Her appearance isn’t what he thought, and neither are her thoughts and actions. Presumably she is repulsive for exhibiting the characteristics that would be acceptable as a man would. Had she been a man the singer would no doubt have patted him on the back and said “Well done”. “Hard Lovin’ Man” seems to be about the lust the singer feels for a woman. It’s not a particularly clever or well written song and the music is often on the edge of discomfort. Nothing to redeem this one star track. Listen Again?: No My Rating: ***

Not really my thing, but I can recognize the skill that went into it.

Speed King - (3) heavy metal guitar to start, then pipe organ? Lots of instrumental sections Bloodsucker (4) - sounds like the original hair band, makes me wonder why I have never really listened to Deep Purple. Some screamy sections, nice, also a little synthesizer Child in Time - (3) rock ballad? Lots of hair band hollerin’ - several of the songs have “jam-band” sections in it which is kind of unusual for hard rock/metal. Lots of shrieking Flight of the Rat (3) - - fast driving rock - nice drum solo at the end Into the Fire - (3.5) more of a creeping tempo Living Wreck (3.5) - loved the start - vocals really different than the others Hard Lovin' Man (3) - synthesizer jam band section didn’t work for me There was certainly a time in my life when I would have loved this record - I liked it a lot, but I’m not as much of a metal/hair band guy anymore.

not as good as Machine Head but still nice

Deep Purple might be the most generic 70s metal band, but jeez sometimes you need a palate cleanser like this to remember that generic doesn't equal bad. A bit samey, but not in an annoying way. "Child in Time" was especially great, really wasn't expecting it to go full on prog rock. Gonna go with a 3/5, not as good as "Machine Head" but still a nice listen.

Probably important for the history of hard rock and metal, sadly not my cup of tea

Not bad. A bit too much DP on the list though!

Liked it

grungy blues/metal that probably sounded great at the time, highlight is the awesome psychedelic Child In Time which is as good as anything else they've done

I love Smoke on the Water but this album is too rowdy for me

Classic rock album; essential for Purple lovers.

Literally nothing about this album stands out to me. It's not bad, but they just did better.

Well, my birthday album. It’s insane that I got two albums in a row by a group with only 3 albums in the book on my birthday. Anyway, this is nowhere near as good as Machine Head. Firstly, the production is kind of shoddy. Not like it sounds atrocious or anything, but this could do with a remaster. Second, the songs aren’t as memorable. Aside from ‘Child In Time’, I probably wouldn’t be able to name a song from this album if you played it for me. Finally, it’s simply not as fun to listen to. I had a good time with Machine Head, but a part of me felt like I was just waiting for the album to end. A lesser effort than its successor on this list (chronologically speaking).

Besides Smoke on the Water, I was basically unfamiliar with Deep Purple. The first half of this album was surprisingly good. The musicianship is impressive throughout.

Probably a bit too metal for me to really enjoy, but this is decent. Nothing as catchy as Smoke On The Water or Highway Star on this album, but it's consistently good without being great. Awesome energy to it, maybe overstretched on a few of the tracks. 3/5.

Time is worth 10 minutes of attention every day but rest is too much of the same and I do not see a reason for the songs to go on and on and on and on and on and on. And on. Without anything interesting happening. 3 stars,

It has a good start and there’s some bangers on there but there are a few too many proggy movements/solos. The rock organ is a complete joke. I’ve included Black Night even though it wasn’t on the original release, which gives it a star in its own right. It’s groovy but I can see why punk happened after this.

Perfectly fine to mow my grass while listening.

Good stuff. Bit Zeppelin-ish with some early NWOBHM thrown in. Really liked Child in Time, reckon Iron Maiden took a lot from that. Some songs were good but just dragged on too long, e.g. Flight of the Rat. Could go back and listen to again at some point. 3.5*

A classic. It's alright, but not my thing.

Alright!

Child in Time best song. Deep Purple pretty solid 70s rock band

Rock in a pure form

Was alright

Producer - “we need to make this track a little longer” Ian Gillan - “maybe I could just shriek for a bit to fill the time?” Producer - “great idea”

thought this was going to be total wank but then it got going and i was like 'actually this is badass' but then after a while it did indeed become total wank. but it wasn't bad

I loved the live album of theirs but this one didn't hit quite as hard. "Child in time" is an amazing song. Album was ok.

3/5 Best: Child In Time Worst: Into the Fire

nao ouvi mt preguica

Could use a little more structure but it's a jam.

purple

This was better than I expected. I wasn't very excited for it, but I liked it. The organ was pretty neat. Some of the songs felt kind of prog-like, which is a big appeal to me. I wasn't crazy about any of the songs in particular, but this was solid. My favourite song was Child in Time.

Incomplete in Spotify, but good stuff.

Classic rawk

Second part of the album fell slightly flat for me

Solid album, and it must have had a pretty huge impact in 1970. Child in Time is a masterpiece and Into the Fire and Living Wreck both have fantastic riffs. The musicianship and vocals are great throughout but the songwriting is a bit weak in places and it does take a while to get going, and not as strong as Machine Head a couple of years later

Could only access two of the songs...

3 Deep Purple albums, 3 3-star ratings. Child in Time slaps. The rest are forgettable

Hell yeah, but of absolute Rock! Average rock mind, but rock nonetheless.

Hard to listen to.

This isn’t their best work. Our great great list curator overlords have selected a Deep Purple album at a time in their career when they sounded like a garage rock band with something a little special going on. This album is certainly better than just garage rock, but the long instrumental bits aren’t good enough to justify themselves, which take away from the album. The lyrics are very cool and I enjoyed the whole thing. I just know they have much more to offer, which makes the album feel boring comparatively. 3/5

Not really what I was expecting.

This record is very much of its time, and isn't far off from other albums I've heard from Deep Purple. Still a classic though, because no matter how many decades pass, you're always going to find something to smile about when listening to '70s rock. Standout was Living Wreck.

A good but not great album with a couple awesome songs...

Speciellt lyssna mer på mina vinyler me dem.

Most deep purple songs lull me to sleep but then some wake me up in a psychedelic dream state

gritty

I liked some of the riffing but overall not really for me

Something classic-rockish

I see what they did there.

Not mad at all about the grooves and licks on this one, but the vocal styling of hard rock of this (any?) era grate me, technically impressive though they might be. Luckily they are most present on the shorter, more straightforward tracks, and I could settle into the jammier cuts where the band shines. Fave track: Child in Time

I felt like this album was really close to the kind of music I like but also really close to the kind of music I don’t like. For 1970 I’m sure it was a bit ahead of its time but didn’t really sound like anything all that special. Fave track: child in time

Child in Time - One of the best rock songs ever. The rest of the album is nothing compared to that. Standouts: Child in Time, Black Night (Bonus) Others: ummmm? 3/5

If there was a musical color gradient with The Doors/Led Zep on the left in white and AC/DC / Motörhead on the right in black I would put Deep Purple's "Deep Purple In Rock" somewhere in the gray zone. So wild hearing this kind of sound come out of a band that recorded this back in 1970 (perhaps even a year earlier in 1969). Even crazier, still, is that this album came out a year after LZ1 and only 3 years after The Doors self-titled. I am honestly surprised by how listenable and interesting this album was. I always thought of Deep Purple as somewhat of a one-hit wonder churning out one of Guitar Center's greatest hits (and many a guitar player's first song, myself included). The combination of organ and silky smooth vocals with shred and mayhem makes for an extremely intriguing listen. Songs like "Into the Fire" just have this simple back and forth, waddling rhythm with some Hendrix chords thrown in there. It's in your face. It's heavy. But it's not obnoxious and it isn't boring. It hits. Dare I say this is proto-metal? Possibly. Had a great time with this record. Glad to have been introduced to another side of Deep Purple via this list! Feeling a 3/5 for this one. It was great but not something that really made me feel something deeper.

I guess in my estimation of pre-1970 bands that Van Halen would draw on and 80s-ify in the latter half on the decade, I did not consider bands like Deep Purple. To be perfectly honest, all I knew about Deep Purple going into today’s selection was “Smoke on the Water,” and how it IS the guitar riff for all beginners everywhere. Honestly, this album kinda slaps. I love when mix quits on “Speed King,” to make room for the organ solo. Very Doors, very heavy, and very prog-rock all at once. The extended jam on “Child in Time” is great too. Like the Allman Brothers Band turned British and made a prog record. Though, the vocal soloing and circus-vibe in the latter half of the song lays it on a little thick. “Flight of the Rat” is probably my favorite. Just the right mix of raw, proto-heavy rock and prog. I don’t really care for the last three songs. Probably for no better reason than that I can only stomach this sound for so long. Hard to believe this is from 1970. However, I don’t think this album really rivals those it begs to be compared with. Like not even close. Deep Purple in Rock—great tongue-in-cheek album title and artwork—is fun and almost more fun because it’s less self-serious than some of those prog-ier bands, even if it is less impressive. The mixing and mastering could definitely be better. But I don’t see a remaster. All in all, for 1970, pretty solid. But nobody needs to hear this before they die, and I have a feeling we’re going to get more Deep Purple. 3/5.

I liked this! It was raw. This kind of thing I’m really warming up to. Something about it felt like it got this kind of thing right. Like Bloodsucker, which is pretty choreographed, well rehearsed. Just felt more like a complete experience, vs other albums like this we’ve heard. I dunno! All the early, proto-metal, rock albums are kind of blurring together for me. But this one felt tighter than others. Also I looked up some music videos of Deep Purple and loved what I saw. 3/5

Pidin tätä bändiä aikaisemmin ihan turhana, mutta oon alkanut lämmetä tälle jytäkaahaamiselle. Ei huono. 3/5

Yläastevuosien suosikkeja ja ihan hauskaa menoa edelleen.

En oo koskaan Deep Purplesta niin innostunut. Ihan jees mut kolmoseen jää.

Definitely more pleasant to listen to than most classic rock albums. However, I still don't think I will be seeking this out for another listen in the future

Loud and fun, with Richie Blackmore really excelling on his solos. That being said, Machine Head is the more cohesive album.

This is standard Deep Purple fare - fun/mindless rock music to cruise around to. Some cool organ sounds; guitar solos feel sloppy at times. Ultimately it ends up as forgettable.

I think I actually like this more than "Machine Head." It's way more intense and heavy.

Some interesting things going on instrumentally but it didn't quite grab me enough over other similar bands of the time. Deep Purple are always just "good" but never "great" for me.

Classic 70s hard rock.

Pretty solid album. I enjoyed side 2. Side one has some good solos though. I guess the lead singer bugs me a little. Not my taste, but a good overall album.

had always assumed deep purple was super cheesy glam rock. enjoyed this more than i anticipated, but probably wont revisit. iron maiden scratches this itch for me.

3-27- Driving to School

This is REAL ROCK N ROLL! Got a little silly at times but I was having fun with it. 3.2/5

Great playing, technical, epic but left me kinda empty

Not really my thing but I can see the appeal. The keyboard solos made me laugh.

I enjoyed it, but not as much as Machine Head

grungy blues/metal that probably sounded great at the time, highlight is the awesome psychedelic Child In Time which is as good as anything else they've done

Talented musicianship marred by the bothersome "ooh baby yeah" type of vocal approach. The extended instrumentals are all ace.

A bit confused why this album was chosen to be on here. There’s really nothing in particular that made this album too special. Maybe the guy making this list just really liked the song Child in Time? Beats me. It’s a decent album overall, but just feels unnecessary to listen to before I die. It’s a low 3 because I like the genre, but the Live in Japan album was much better. Also I’d like to say for reference there are 3 Deep Purple albums on this list, which is equal to the number of Queen albums on here and 1 more than the number of AC/DC albums and Fleetwood Mac albums. Even if you know nothing about music, you’d think that’s strange. I know 0 people who would name a Deep Purple album or song in their top 20, maybe even top 50. I’m not mad, just disappointed.

Let's give this a chance! Child In Time, everybody knows that one! It's just pretty inoffensive hard rock, it's alright. This is all very Iron Butterfly at the moment!! Decent record, nothing mind-blowing but a solid rocking time.

Enjoyed this much more than their other one. Some good blues rock baby.

Classic 70's rock, is a little generic-sounding.

Hard driving music, Child in Time is especially good. Really enjoyed but -2 stars for the horrible keyboards/ organs.

The guitar and organ are quite cool. The vocals are quite uncool.

Child in time is an amazing song. Otherwise this music and the pathetic screaming sound rather outdated.

Wait, I’m supposed to believe Deep Purple had other songs beside Smoke On The Water? Songs I already knew: none Favourites: Child In Time This was not at all what I was expecting a Deep Purple album to sound like. It opens with shredding guitar, and demonstrates Halford-esque vocals at times. It’s certainly prog at its core, but you can easily draw parallels between this album and power metal (although I don’t think power metal had started existing yet when this came out). As groundbreaking as this all is, it is still 2022 when I’m listening to the album, so listening to it for the first time today isn’t quite as revolutionary as it may have been in 1970. They may have put the building blocks in place for various genres yet to come, but others have since perfected this which makes Deep Purple In Rock unfortunately somewhat dismissible now. Not a bad album, by any means, but if I wanted to listen to music like this, I’d likely go elsewhere.

Not bad, sounds like they are trying to hard to be Led Zeppelin. No tracks really stand out but guitar work/riffs are tight

after the first minute of the album i thought i was gonna hate it but i didn’t! i think the vocals are the weakest part of this album and sometimes take away from some super cool things happening musically.

kinda cool ig but nothing special

Grew up listening to this because my parents like this album

Loads of fun, have me a terrible wired energy though and I scrubbed the kitchen til 3 am. I'm not a metal guy but this was very listenable for the most part. Not too cheesy, a few really good solos which sounded accomplished, rhythmic and satisfying. Almost like some early hippy prog stuff. You know, when it just goes. Other times, a bit like early hippy prog stuff, it falls if a cliff but those moments are few and far between.

Word boos of verdrietig.

I like a lot on it except for that damn keyboard.

3.5/5. This was alright. Very heavy rock, but it's from a time where heavy rock is good.

proper old school rock. I liked it and will likely listen again

Loved this band as a teenager. I played Child in Time so many times. Now I find them overly showy. I know that's the point. The Blackmore solos, the screeching of Gillan, the almost classical keyboard riffs. Its psyche heavy rock and it does little for me. The simplistic riffs of Sabbath and the purer blues of Zep trump it. This sounds like a band pulling in diff directions.

I hadn't heard this album before (had a copy of Machine Head on cassette when I was a kid). There are some great riffs in here, possibly a track or two I would go back too - eg Into the Fire.

Surprised myself about how much I enjoyed this. More varied than I anticipated. Best song Black Nighy.

Deep Purple reminds me of that time I was repeatedly kicked in the cock and balls by the entire Chelsea first team and backroom staff. It was shortly after they had all jizzed on my face and chest.

Hard Rock doing what Hard Rock does. And look at them being literally carved into rock on the cover, how very clever.

Pretty typical 70s drug-rock. Well executed drug-rock, though - the genre at its best.

Pretty hype but a bit repetitive, 3stars

I can see how this album has influenced a lot in the genre, not my type of music though

It was pretty cool. I could see listening to it again. Just didn’t quite do it for me. Huge spinal tap fan

Classic rock group from that era.

Listening to this album made me check my earlier review of Machine Head, but sure enough, I feel this album just isn't quite as good as that one. To me, it feels more basic, with fewer defined themes and more generic metal "filler", including for example, super fast but not-necessarily-inspiring guitar segments.

Nothing special but never a great experience listening through YouTube

Some good ol' fashioned rock. Really dope instrumentation; every solo ripped and the drums at the end of Flight of the Rat give me life. The keys gave an interesting texture to the overall sound, leaning a little gospel-y in places- not sure I was ever a fan of that too much but it fit here and there. One thing I for sure ended up not liking is Ian Gillan's voice. It sounded pretty good until Child In Time's constant ceaseless caterwauling... That really wore me out on his whole style, such that he was consistently my least favorite part of any following track. Which is a shame, because again most of the music ripped. Highlights: Speed King, Flight of the Rats, Child In Time (the parts w/ no vocals) Lowlights: Child in Time (the rest of it), Living Wreck, Hard Lovin' Man

Not what I usually listen to but enjoyable. Not much else to say for me.

solid classic rock album. Not my tastes though

I really wish I could hear this in context, it’s hard not to listen with modern ears. In 1970 this was probably great but it just sounds so generic to me. The keyboardist sounds very educated It’s hard not to compare any 70’s rock to zeppelin. I’m sure I’m gonna say that a hundred more times over the course of this activity. Child in time hits remind me of Achilles last stand. Really wild journey of a song. I love the insane ending. It sounds like they spliced the final hit. Organs are sick, but the organ-heavy rock sounds so generic and dad-rock. ( granted they were probably some of the first to do it)

Speedking, dang. This albums banger after banger. Child in Time is amazing, that screeching is haunting. Fantastic album not perfect but pretty dang good.

Classic rock, hard rock, possibly one of the first metal albums. Reminiscent of led zeppelin from the same time period. Overall enjoyable.

Good riffs. Dumb lyrics. DP for everyone!

Third Deep Purple album out of around 50, gives around 6% on my list so far! And similarly, as on other albums, I think that this band is enjoyable and interesting, but a little bit outdated. I am honestly surprised, that Deep Purple is regarded so high in terms of cultural impact. There is a chance that I am missing the context again, that in late sixties this type of music was non-existent and they revolutionized the pop/rock genre forever. But if you look, for example, at Led Zeppelin, making music during the same time, there is no comparison between the bands in my opinion. Also, nowadays DP is fairly forgotten, and I really think this is not a coincidence. Deep Purple In Rock is a good album, that has couple strong moments, especially on Side A with songs Speed King and Child in Time. Interesting guitar and organ solos, long compositions and fairly entertaining rhytm section makes those songs tantalizing and hypnotizing. However I would argue that those are just moment on this album, whereas Side B is extremely bland and forgettable. This record is a really nice piece to listen to during a long, winter night, with a fireplace close-by and a drink in hand. But personally, I am pretty sure this won't happen anytime soon, so the way I enjoyed this album surely has to be reflected by the rating.

Living wreck has a bridge that sounds like the 100 volt ghost very cool

Deep purple in cock

Streit dad rock

Ngl it went kinda hard though it was repetitive.

Good enough

Wasn't too excited when this album popped up so it was fighting an uphill battle from the off, but it was fine really. Probably more forward-thinking at the time than it sounds now. Good vocals & lots of Doors-y organ bits that I didn't expect. Child in Time is textbook OTT rock and I dig Living Wreck too.

These son’s-a-bitches are still touring (I guess, so are the Stones). “Into the Fire” a rip-off, I mean a borrow, of King Crimson’s riff “21st Century Schizoid Man”.

Whilst I was surprised to see even two Deep Purple albums make the list, In Rock was the more enjoyable of the two. And whilst they never quite shake the feeling they are having more fun planting than you are listening, there are a few moments here that show the band giving some good rock.

Man I love 'Child In Time'.

Deep Purple is certainly at their best when they allow for their songs to build up. They possess a skill for grandiose songs but unfortunately they only really showcase it on the magnificent Child in Time. Apart from Gillan’s singing, Blackmore and Lord are the absolute highlights of the record. Blackmore seems to overshadow Lord on this record, but when the organ gets to shine it’s always a joy. While a shocker in 1970 for sure the more classic blues and jam heavy parts don’t quite hold up today. In the end, while having some excellent and timeless moments, it just doesn’t hold my attention throughout.

Cracking drumming and some great riffs but we’re edging into prog territory here with the extended jazzy solos and keyboard interludes. So ultimately not my thing. But fun for a listen.

Long hard rocky songs

Rockin!

Good classic rock

On essaie d’innover.

Einu sinni fannst mér þetta æðisleg plata, nú finnst mér hún fín. Child in time er mjög gott, Speed King er góðu lagi. Hitt er filler fyrir mér. Mun nær fjarka en tvisti, en ég mun ekki setja hana á fóninn í bráð.

In Rock (1970) was a transitional album. 2-3 really good rock songs, the rest rather average. (6/10) FT: Child in time, Speed King

It's pretty good, but it's also pretty Spinal Tap-like. From the Mount Rushmore album cover to the hard, simple riffs, to the silly lyrics, I have to believe Christopher Guest and the guys listened to a lot of Deep Purple as they came up with the music of Spinal Tap. 3 stars.

Better than expected

3.5 I really liked Speed King, Child in Time, the distorted white noise-like organs in Living Wreck; also sometimes dragged in ways Machine Head didn’t

Bit too much noodle

It was alright. A lot of early stuff I've never heard before

Sounds just like an album titled ‘Deep Purple In Rock’ from 1970 should

Turn that music down, dad.

Not my cup of tea as something that I would normally listen to, but I get why some would love it. The energy is palpable and engaging, both from the vocals and the rhythm section. Favs for me were Bloodsucker, Child in Time, Living Wreck, and Hard Lovin' Man.

I kept waiting for smoke on the water. Some pretty screamy singing and beefy guitar.

This is some pretty standard early 70s hard rock. A bit samey but some grinding organ

I should have liked this a lot but I much prefer Rainbow which covers roughly the same sound but just rocked better. 3.5/5

Some bands release debut albums fully formed: Led Zepplin and Black Sabbath, for example, who were exploring similar (to a certain extent- everyone calm down, I know the differences between the two) heavy sounds at around the same time in history. Zepplin was the first out of the chute in January of 1969, then Sabbath, who were literally recording and releasing their debut at the same time as Deep Purple were recording and releasing theirs. While this is not, technically, Deep Purple’s debut, it is the first with vocalist Ian Gillan and organist Jon Lord, who along with guitarist Ritchie Blackmore are really the Deep Purple everyone knows. Listen to Zepplin’s debut and then their next two LPs, doing the same with Sabbath, and while there is certainly musical development, the debuts are still pretty damn strong. Then, listen to 'Deep Purple In Rock,' and skip ahead to 'Machine Head' (I’m not familiar with the one in between, but it doesn’t matter for the sake of my argument) and hear the difference. The performance (particularly drummer Ian Paice) and most definitely the recording are far superior on 'Machine Head' than they are on 'Deep Purple In Rock.' In retrospect, the boys should’ve composed, performed, and recorded this whole thing, then threw it away, gigged some more, and moved on to 'Machine Head.' If I were a member of Deep Purple, I would wince a bit every time I heard 'Deep Purple In Rock.' Come to think of it, though, I don’t believe I’ve ever heard it played at a bar or a restaurant or at the grocery store, or anywhere. Which is good, because its not very good. At least, parts of it. Drummer Ian Paice is the weak link in the chain, which surprised me because of his terrific work on 'Machine Head.' Obviously, he got a lot better as time went on. By the way, his drum solo at the conclusion of ‘The Flight of the Rat’ is lame and unnecessary. Ringo Starr and Charlie Watts did not do drum solos. Even Neil Peart didn’t do drum solos, for crying out loud! Hey, rock n’ roll: leave the drum solos to John Bonham and jazz drummers, ok? Then there’s the lyrics- oof. They’re just awful: ‘In my mind I had to find a new kind of way of being so cool. Like a blue-blooded, well-studded English fool.’ And that might be the best one of the bunch. These lyrics are bonerfide cock rock, best sung with no underwear, tight jeans, and unbuttoned shirt. Barefoot or boots, your choice. ‘Hard Lovin’ Man,’ ‘Into the Fire (with its silly reference to the Mandrake root),’ please. On the positive side, at least, is the one singing ‘em: Ian Gillan, one of the best voices to emerge from the dawn of metal. No one, and I mean no one, could yowl a falsetto like Mr. Gillan. He’s in rarefied air with Ronnie James Dio, maybe the greatest metal vocalist ever. But even Gillan’s vocals are a mere prelude to the two deepest shades of purple, guitarist Ritchie Blackmore and organist Jon Lord. Their individual solos, harmonizing solos, dueling duets are a wonderful thing to behold. Just skip ahead through the tedious first three minutes of ‘Child In Time’ (what’s a 1970s LP without the mandatory anti-war song, right?) and get to around the 3:20 mark when they start a rockin’. (Yeah, we get your little clever little military drum cadence bit, Paice.) And then about thirty seconds later when they double-time the tempo, sit back and enjoy the ride. In fact, that might be the best advice throughout, to just skip over Gillan’s lyrics, and then once he starts howling, you’re safe from there. Blackmore and Lord are soon to follow. Hey, it’s still Deep Purple, and they still outplay a lot of other bands. But it would probably be more accurate to call this first one Deep Lavender. Thankfully, they got good n’ purpler as time went on.

Old school heavy rock

Watered down Led Zeppelin wannabes. Meh.

6/10 some parts shred but it just drags on

5/10. Definitely glad that I got a Little Richard earlier in the challenge, made hearing Speed King more interesting, and it's always fun to see albums in the list referencing each other. That said, this music is not interesting enough to have 7-10 minute tracks, and just feels frantic.

This would've been a 4 if not for some very grating parts of this album.

Was NOT in the mood for this, but it get pretty damn good starting at track 3.

I guess I just don't quite get Deep Purple. I feel like I should like them more than I do. Some stuff works for me, some is just meh. I appreciate their influence on some of my favorite artists but I just can't enjoy it that much. I think if I had grown up in the 70's I might like them more.

this is really interesting. You can hear and feel the foundations of metal in this album but the vocals still sound more like late 60s rock'n'roll. Definitely breaking through into something new. I will listen to more Deep Purple

These guys rock!! Craaazzy vocals, extreme speed, power chords, hot damn! We start off with a radical ode to Little Richard; I like that feedback that closes the song. "Bloodsucker" has cool screeches, and a nice proggy guitar solo in the middle, but otherwise forgettable. "Flight of the Rat" has a really sick extended solo segment, but I'm not a fan of the beginning or end. "Into the Fire" and "Living Wreck" are pretty forgettable. "Hard Lovin Man" has the coolest heavy metal instrumentals, kinda reminds me of Black Sabbath. The star here is the classic "Child in Time," a prog-rock 10-minute masterpiece that strongly borrows from classical genres. The song is so great that all the characteristics I enjoy are perfected here, causing the other tracks to pale in comparison in every way. Love how the song just gets crazier as the minutes pass into a heavy metal frenzy until the 6 minute mark just resets us to the beginning, closing with a climatic finish. "Child in Time" carries the album, but it's the only track besides maybe the first and last to be great from start to finish. Two duds and the rest have their highlights. Nevertheless, this album was huge influential in the emerging heavy metal genre at the turn of the 70s and should be looked in that perspective where they had few contemporaries to base their work off.

not my tasse de thé mais sympa

Classic but not outstanding.

Pretty standard deep purple

Not as bad as I was expecting, clearly an influential rock record just not my jam

Full on rock. Whilst I won’t be listening to this again, I have to admit it’s good music for the genre so 3 stars it is!

I liked it when I first heard it but it did not leave much of an impression on me afterwards

Speed King is a hard rockin opener. The rest is pretty typical Purple with that prog/hard rock mix, soaring vocals, etc. Good record. Not necessarily for me, and certainly no Machine Head.

Oh boy. Another standard 70s rock album. Woohoo. Bloodsucker was cool tho
