some good, classic Christmas music
Sheer festive joy. When Phil Spector’s wall of sound plays behind Darlene Love, it’s like twinkling fairy lights coming on. This is my all time favourite Christmas album. In retrospect, Big Phil probably should have stuck to slaying Christmas anthems.

The seminal Christmas album
I listened to this in May to see if it was still good. ANd you know what, it is. There are better versions of a good chunk of the songs on here, but that doesn't mean these are bad versions. The only bad song might be Phil Spector's stupid version of "Silent Night" which is a lot worse once you know about Phil.

Fine album but I’m not a Christmas music fan
Part of me feels like the Ronettes' album would have been a better choice, but right now I'm filled with Christmas cheer and glad for the others that they get to be included. Some of the intros here are a bit syrupy, but if there's a time for being overly sentimental, it's now of course. The main thing holding this back, of course, is when there's a man. Bob B. Soxx is a perfectly serviceable singer, but he's certainly no Ronnie Spector or Darlene Love, or even a LaLa Brooks. Even worse is Phil Spector's rendition of Silent Night, which is just too much. It's even worse knowing what we know now, that *this* man is doing the song about sleeping in heavenly peace.

It’s such a shame that these legendary acts had to work with such a tormented, yet supremely talented, producer. I wish I would’ve been given this album in July… hearing it on Christmas Day when I’m already so sick of Christmas music is skewing my opinion. Fuck Phil Spector, but long live these amazing acts.

I feel like this was an overall solid cover of the classics, the production was not the best songs. There were multiple people choose different versions to listen to over this, I’ve given it.
Christmas songs are weird. You know all the lyrics, but the voices and arrangements are different. Then you come across albums like this where you know it. Like it's ingrained in your head and you had no clue it was because you didn't own this album but you have heard the songs on the radio, or in a store or at a company party. Like you know them so well but you would remember Spector being in the title. So you know it wasn't that you owned it. Christmas songs are a weird cheat. So many bands have a Christmas album that you don't know about. So many songs are simply missed yet years later you stumble across it and go how do I know this?!?!

The same Phil Spector who went to jail for second degree murder of Lana Clarkson, and has a history of violence with guns and women. Judging from the dates of reviews, this album has been shoved under peoples noses since 2020 on or around Christmas day. Some people should be erased from glorification, not from history, so 1001 deems it fit to shove a woman killer and hater under your nose on Christmas day. Fuck you 1001.

For such a violent and weird psycho that Phil Spector was, he sure knew how to inspire The Ramones... They are not on this album though.

Glad we had a Christmas album pushed on us, but I put my list on pause so I only got around to listening to this at the end of January which kind of fucks the vibe a bit. I’ve heard this before though, and it’s a solid Christmas album made better by Phil Spector’s production, even if the man himself was a worthless piece of shit.
341/1089 - I don't like holiday music. It always feels so cynically made. Paired with Spector's lush orchestration which makes me want to vomit and this wasn't a good combo. I don't mean to be a total grinch though. I do like the older church music (esp. on organ!) around Christmas and Vince Guaraldi. I also liked the Nostalgia Critic's weird christmas song and the PilotRedSun Grinch Ultimatum dance. Anyways hope you have the reciept cause I'm returning this.
I’m listening to this after Christmas and usually hate Christmas songs, but this was still pretty good. I didn’t know all those classic songs came from this single album. Better than expected.

Getting excited about a random specific day of the year is a foreign concept to me. I never really cared about any holiday, and since I’m not American, Catholic Christmas is not something that’s celebrated where I’m from. That is all to say that I’m not the target audience of this album. However, this record is still quite enjoyable. It doesn’t fill me with the “Christmas spirit” or whatever the fuck, but what it does is deliver a collection of nicely made pop songs. The vibe is great. The songs are chill, happy, and fun. It really raises your mood even if you don’t care about Christmas. Wall of Sound is also something I’m a fan of (although I would’ve liked it more if it were used somewhere outside of pop). It’s still pop, so you won’t fine something overly unique here (not that they tried; it’s a Christmas album after all), but it’s still fun. 7/10

Release too early to include the best Christmas songs, which as a genre peaked in 1973. Also Phil Spector killed someone, but then he isn’t the only person in this list who has. It’s fine.

I got 2 problems with Phil Spector, 1. Some of his production is atrocious. 2. He literally killed somebody. Putting all that aside this was a nice Christmas album. 4 stars

I'm more of a "A Very Special Christmas" kind of guy. My holiday season doesn't really get into gear until I hear what they are cooking up over on Hollis Avenue. That said, over 60 years after its release, this album still defines the sound of Christmas. That is a pretty incredible accomplishment. Having these songs, or ones that sound just like them, droning on in the background for a couple weeks a year is fine with me.
This album is like being a twelve year old and coming downstairs on a wintery morning to see that your mother has made pancakes. Your dad is home, which in itself makes the morning special. He is a high-flying businessman and normally leaves for work before you wake up. He is late home most nights too, usually arriving after you have been sent to bed. He claims it is because the O'Halloran account is taking longer than expected to lock down and the deadline for settlement is approaching. The reality is he is having an affair with his secretary, and he is late home because he has had her bent over his corner office desk. Your mum knows. Your sister knows. You don't like to admit it to yourself, but even you know something is wrong between your parents. You mum never says anything about it though, because starting a confrontation would mean risking losing the comfortable lifestyle that she has grown accustomed to. To cope with the situation, your mother drinks three or four glasses of a buttery chardonnay with lunch. Sometimes you have to walk home from school because she doesn't show up to pick you up. Instead of confronting your father about his infidelity, your mother takes up tennis lessons, and times her poolside sunbathing sessions with the pool boy's appointments. Pietro the tennis coach and Carlos the pool cleaner used to enjoy the playful cat and mouse games that your mother both played with them, but it has been getting a bit too real lately, and they are nervous about things going too far. Your sister sees what is going on far more clearly than you do. As well as the stress of her parents' marriage falling apart, she has her final exams coming up at school and she doesn't know what she wants to do with her life beyond that. She has started microdosing LSD as a way to get through the day. One time Carlos walked into the garden shed to grab the net and found your sister smoking a joint. He foolishly accepted her offer to share a toke, and now she feels she can blackmail him into keeping quiet about what she is up to. She knows he is attracted to her, so she makes sure to wear her lowest cut tops and shortest shorts whenever he is around, and makes overtly sexual comments to him when your mother isn't around. Carlos hates your family, and he hates his job. But he needs it, as he has bills to pay and limited experience so would struggle to find work elsewhere. Your life feels like it is crumbling around you. There is no support available at home, and your disinterested teachers aren't here to be your psychiatrist either. They aren't paid enough for that. Your only option is to lock yourself in your room and play computer games, longing for future days when you can escape it all. But none of that matters this morning. Because your mum made pancakes, and the whole family is sitting around the kitchen table together, acting like everything is good in life. Merry Christmas, and RIP Lana Clarkson.

Well I fell off the wagon on my 1001 albums challenge back in December and playing some catch up today. And that's why I'm listening to a Christmas album on Valentines Day. Well, these are definitely some of the classics that I like to hear during the holiday season. Ronnie Spector's voice is divine. But it's a various artists Christmas album and it's hard to give it a full 5 stars. I'll go with 4.

The Ronettes, the Crystals, Darlene Love, and Bob Soxx and the Blue Jeans combine to deliver one of the best Christmas albums of all time. An unfortunate album title (and final track), but what can you do.
I guess if there has to be a Christmas album, this one isn’t too bad. But it came on a bad year, where I’ve become more cynical about the holiday than ever.

This album has an absolutely cursed history for a happy jolly Christmas album. From being released on John F Kennedy's assassination day, to the producer being a convicted murderer and apparently a nightmare to work with. Anyway this album absolutely slays and has iconic versions of classics and a very good original. Minus one point for the literal slaying.

Album #13 Phil Spector: A Christmas Gift For You Christmas music isn’t necessarily something that I get too engrossed in around the holidays; that isn’t to say that it doesn’t have its place, however. My only real familiarity with Phil Spector before this was that he murdered something beautiful; of course, referring to “Let it Be” by The Beatles. Oh, and he also killed a woman. So overall, not someone I ever intended to explore further. But the production of this album is actually pretty good, though the vocal performances certainly elevate it. This is a very solid selection of Christmas songs; if this were the only Christmas album in your collection, you would probably be alright. My favourite performances come from the Ronettes and Darlene Love, and I’m not too big a fan of Bobby B. Soxx’s tracks, specifically Here Comes Santa Claus, which comes directly after the beautiful “Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)” and feels quite out of place. As far as Christmas albums go this is probably the best, though I’ve not heard any others; but the album really only has a place in one month, so I can’t rate it too highly. Best Tracks: Christmas (Baby Please Come Home), Sleigh Ride, Parade of the Wooden Soldiers Worst Track: Here Comes Santa Claus Score out of 10: 7
Put this on the upstairs speakers during the morning in Christmas. Very pleasant time. It is Christmas music though and Christmas music does suck unless it’s Nate cole so 1/5

Love, love love. A seasonal favourite. Soooo Christmassy, and reminds me of childhood Christmases. The harmonies, the songs, the sound, the bells, the voices. All rolled into a fabulous snowball of festive fabulousness. (Fuck Spector though...but a Big Five for everyone else that worked on this album).

Anytime I hear a track from this album it makes me feel Christmassy. It's a beautiful soundscape that is the music essence of Christmas.

Look I hate Christmas music and I hope Phil Spector is burning in Hell right now But if you have to give me Christmas music, I'd happily stop being a total scrooge for an hour or so and listen to this. I think this is exactly the place where the wall of sound is unquestionably the right production choice. It can't be 5* because it's Christmas music but it gets a 4.

#219/1001. As I saw this is included in the list, I expecting this present. So I started listening to it - about 20-30 years ago, daily for a week or two before Christmas. But isn't it funny how quick after xmas all the music that has been wassaled on the radio, at home on your albums, streaming playlists and c-tapes and in shopping malls, churches plus schools gets old and out of place. But year after year, this present is opened and delivers such joy to the world that I'm not sure if mankind deserves it.

impossible to talk about this album without talking about phil spector who is A Right Bastard. just like, WOW, is he awful. i loosely knew of him prior to listening but i didn't appreciate the intensity of *how* evil the guy was, so of course he's widely influential on the development of pop because he figured out how to sell records. "what if we made the record sound like dogshit because we're targeting car radios" is maddening that it was effective because frequently people think louder = better, and boy is this loud!!! it's exhausting. it's quite literally wrong to listen to this on headphones, but either way it's an acoustic brick being thrown at mach 10 at your head. the frustrating thing to me about a cruel tyrant like spector is that i do not believe for a second that his sociopathic torturing of musicians was meritful to the creative or financial success of records he produced. it's all smoke and mirrors in purpose of mythmaking about his supposed 'genius' and the false necessity of suffering to produce great art. merry christmas.
Well the name of this album sounds like a threat if I've ever heard one. Phil Spector pulled a gun on 4 different women for not wanting to screw him before murdering Lana Clarkson. Also he did so much abuse to write it here would take more time then their is in the day. Anyhow this is a compilation album and it's not like he sings on it so I'm going to reaaaaally try to block out the thought of who I'm listening to. Then again he does SPEAK on it which activated my fight or flight senses hard. Overall I think its just okay. The issue with the wall of sound is that it sounds better the worse the equipment is, so I'm listening to this in the worst way possible. It was designed for 60s radios afterall. This is the only of The Ronettes and The Crystals on here, which is unfortunate because I think they had songs a lot better then those on here. Sleigh Rides, Santa Claus is coming to Town, and Winter Wonderland are huge standouts though and these recordings have almost transcended the album itself in pop culture. I really can't get over the production though, I've seen it work elsewhere but here it's just too much

Good Songs - Sleigh Ride, I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, Winter Wonderland, and Parade of the Wooden Soldiers. Bad Songs - White Christmas, Frosty the Snowman, The Bells of St. Mary, Santa Claus is Coming to Town, Marshmallow World, Christmas (Baby Please Come Home), Here Comes Santa Claus, and Silent Night.

This is the first non-random album. It's a Christmas compilation album. I don't know how to rate it. Well, it's a really good compilation of holiday music. Some of them are classics, some of them sound like something that's playing in the malls. It was unexpected to get this album today, it's a real good easter egg. This album was released on November 22, 1963. The same day JFK was assassinated. What really went on between Marilyn Monroe and the Kennedys, and who really pulled the trigger on JFK? — Special Agent Dale Cooper, Twin Peaks So, a Christmas Gift that we deserved, I guess. Ironically, Phil Spector killed someone with a gunshot in the mouth in 2003. 4/5🎄 —————————————— No liked songs
I dislike Christmas songs because of the way they are incessantly played in so many places I go to from early November each year. The 'original' songs are bad enough, but re-writes (usually American) that try to improve on the originals and then fail are worse still. I don't care if it's Phil Spector's Wall of Sound - all the fancy production techniques in the world can't improve the content. Bah Humbug!

actually kind of pog. some completely stellar vocal performances here. but also its christmas music so if homie puts this on, 340 days out of the year im ripping out the aux. favorite is Christmas (Baby Please Come Home), I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus also sounds pretty definitive
Rating: 5/10 A collection of rockin’ classic Christmas song renditions. Heard these version of the big hits too many times to count on Christmas radio. 1001 Essential albums, nah.

Was it the best Christmas album, no. Will I play it at Holiday functions in the future, yes. While Phil Spector is a gigantic piece of shit, he was one hell of a producer and the wall of sound he's known for comes through on this album.

Julmusik är ju vad det är, Phil Spector vad han är… Men dåligt är det inte som julalbum.
En tumregel är att aldrig ta emot en julklapp från just Phil spector. Men förutom mord (både av en människa och av flera spår på ”let it be”-skivan) är ju det här någonting gubben var en fena på - köttig 60-talssoul! Att höra Phil i sista låten är spännande. Man undrar hur många i produktionen han mulat in en revolver i käften på när han tappat tålamodet? Julskivor är oftast piss, och denna ska bedömas i sin väldigt specifika genre. Då är den väl en rätt så stark 3a va?

It sure is some Christmas music. Good renditions, a couple of which are in eternal rotation on every Christmas station, but it's still a bunch of covers of Frosty and Winter Wonderland and whatever. Phil Spector is a monster

Spent Christmas at Nate’s and he had one playlist on repeat which featured many songs from this. To then have to listen to those songs again was not ideal.
Phil Spector’s worst crime was establishing on this very album the most unforgivable Christmas music trends—including but not limited to a swingin beat, cheery ringalings, and an overabundance of bells. Notwithstanding his wall of sound innovation, we as a human race are now subject to suffering through these tropes in any retail space for all eternity. Satan himself smiles as we waste away in corporate holiday hell, where we weep, wail, and gnash our teeth, and our bones are ground to powder under the trampling hooves of perpetual “Sleigh Ride”. God help us. Phil Spector’s second worst crime was murder.

Das kickt außerhalb der Weihnachtszeit natürlich nicht so richtig. Gute Songs und Produktionen sind insb. mit Blick auf das Erscheinungsjahr dabei, daher (und trotz Phil Spector als Person) noch gerade so 3 Sterne.
Phil Spector ist ein widerliches Arschloch, aber leider ein fantastischer Produzent. Habs in diesem Jahr nicht gehört, aber in den vergangenen Jahren eigentlich immer aufgelegt. Eine tolle Ansammlung an bekannten und weniger bekannten Weihnachtsstandards, wunderschön orchestriert und gesungen.
Keine Ahnung wie ich ein Weihnachtsalbum außerhalb von Weihnachten bewerten soll. Zur jetzigen Jahreszeit ist es aufjedenfall voll in Ordnung, aber das war es dann auch schon.
Puh da bin ich hin- und hergerissen. Im Endeffekt mag ich Weihnachten und diese Songs ganz besonders. Zudem halte ich diese Versionen der Songs für wirklich gut gelungen. Nach meinen bisherigen Maßstäben muss ich trotzdem was abziehen, weil es am Ende des Tages trotzdem nur Cover sind. In Frage muss ich auch stellen, ob so etwas wirklich etwas auf dieser Liste zu suchen hat (was nicht heißen soll, dass es kein schönes und tolles Album ist, aber ich hab da ne andere Erwartungshaltung). Dennoch kann ich alles in allem nicht weniger als 4 rechtfertigen, weil es mir wirklich gut gefallen hat.
2 Wochen nach Weihnachten entfaltet das hier leider nicht mehr seine ganze Wirkung und das obwohl ich es unter anderem unterm Weihnachtsbaum gehört habe. Mein Problem hiermit ist, dass ich finde, dass sind tolle Songs, toll produziert und alles, aber für ein Album von 1001 ist das einfach nix. Das ist an eine Zeit gebunden, hat nur Cover Songs und ist ja streng genommem eine Compilation. Eine gute zwar aber mehr als 2 Punkte kann ich nicht geben. Für Phil Spector nochmal ein Punkt abzug, dann lande ich bei 1.

christmas is a good time for the wall of sound
Motown Christmas is my favorite Christmas subgenre. I can't help but feel a bit nostalgic when I hear these songs. I'd be hard pressed to find a better true Christmas album than this one. If I can find this on vinyl I'd play it constantly during the Christmas season. I'm not measuring this one on the same grading scale on the others, but rather how much it makes me feel the Christmas spirit.

I always forget that Phil Spector shows up on Silent Night. Not a comforting voice to hear. But what a mind! Ten years ago, we felt so free to live without the spectre of impending doom. Now we have no SOPHIE, no Phil Spector, and no MF Doom! Genuinely great assembly of Spector's various girl and pop groups. The definitive Christmas albums that isn't just timeless piano ballads. All due respect to The Beach Boys and Bing Crosby (& Ringo Starr), this is the Christmas album to end all Christmas albums and it needed a Jewish man's vision to make that happen. This has to be a seminal album, not just for the music, but for the moment when Christmas changed forever. So many enduring songs. Despite his misdemeanours Phil Spector was unquestionably a genius.

If you can overlook the dodgy, not to mention criminal, background of the producer (but hey, which of us is perfect) it's a great Xmas listen. 4*

Nothing says Merry Christmas like convicted murderer, Phil Spector! I love Christmas music, but I prefer the classics - Bing Crosby, Burl Ives, Gene Autry.
I think whomever runs this project has lost sight of what it’s supposed to be about; 1001 albums you must hear before you die. A collection of Christmas carols works today on Christmas but only because I celebrate Christmas. If I came across this album in July, I’d want nothing to do with it. The music is fine but I disagree with the importance of this album for the larger audience.
Ahh, the Christmas spirit! What could be more pure and innocent than an album of timeless holiday classics? Can’t you just picture it? Recorded in the sweltering heat of a Los Angeles August by a domineering megalomaniac who yelled, screamed and cursed his way through the sessions, making everyone involved completely miserable. When he wasn’t screaming orders, this married man was trying to shag one of the female vocalists, so he gave her all the solos and best songs, which pissed all the other artists off. By the way, he was also Jewish, so perhaps he was not the obvious choice for a quintessential Christmas album. Ah, Phil Spector… the man, the myth, the murderer of a woman that he shot in the face because she wouldn’t have sex with him. It’s like a holiday carol come to life! The result of this Yuletide madness is a buffet of force-fed Christmas standards. Much like the holidays themselves, this amounts to a thinly veiled respite from the reality of what is really important and meaningful to real people in their daily lives. Enjoy the mirage and roast those chestnuts, bioch.

My mother has a sick obsession with Christmas carols. This year, I came prepared with a peace offering of 'A Charlie Brown Christmas' by the Vince Guaraldi Trio. It is an excellent wee record, and I had high hopes that it would appease her. It lasted about 30 seconds before it was taken off with force. Little Drummer Boy was then put on. Little Drummer Boy was then restarted half way through because "isn't this a good one?". Little Drummer Boy was then turned up. I went outside with the mosquitoes. Next year, I will try this one. Because if anyone can understand the true meaning of family Christmas, it’s a murderer.

It’s truly amazing how many classics came out of this one album. I knew most of the songs without ever seeking out the record. But even so, there are overlooked tracks that deserve a little limelight. Personally, I’ll be singing “A Marshmallow World” for seasons to come.
A timeless collection of Christmas tracks tainted by the name of a toxic man. Every track by The Ronnettes is perfect. The rest are quite good too, but that Frosty The Snowman rendition always brings me back to goodfellas…

Definitely a Christmas album - I’m a bit behind on albums but couldn’t face listening to this in January. Phil Spector is a bad person but there are some classic bops on here. For all of the above probably can’t rate this higher than a 3

One of the best Christmas albums, gives us possibly my favorite “ding-a-ling-a-ling-a-ding-dong-ding” in any version of Sleigh Ride.
Classic spector sound, wild to think all these standard versions of the songs were form the same album.3.5 rounded down because it's only got 3 weeks of annual shelf life.
Listened on the way to PA a day before getting this as the album draw. I love Phil Spector, the Ronettes, Darlene Love etc and this style of music, many of these are THE version of Christmas songs…not sure if his pervy, self-indulgent over the top speech on “Silent Night” adds to its charm or is a demerit but I’m happy to give a 4. Welp, standard mainstream Christmas music. Really nothing special about that tbh. I personally rather listen to the really classic stuff from Boney M. or a good Xmas Rock/Metal playlist instead.

As a Christmas present, Spector surprised Ronnie Bennet (the singer he used on this album, whom he had an affair with during his first marriage) by adopting twins Louis Phillip Spector and Gary Phillip Spector. Who the ₣ʉ¢₭ thinks kids are a Christmas gift? Exactly the kind of person you'd guess. Spector imprisoned Ronnie and subjected her to years of psychological torment, sabotaged her career, and forbid her to perform until she escaped barefoot with the help of her mother. In their divorce settlement, she forfeited all future earnings and custody of their children because Spector threatened to kill her. With his second wife out the way, Spector decided to re-gift his "Christmas Gift" and in their words, Donté and Gary were "kept captive as children" and were "forced to perform simulated intercourse" with Spector's then-girlfriend. "I was blindfolded and sexually molested. Dad would say, 'You're going to meet someone,' and it would be a 'learning experience'." "He was not a people person… [but] he shows in his own way that he cares." On February 3, 2003, Spector shot actress Lana Clarkson in the mouth while in his mansion. He claimed it had been suicide then as evidence piled up against him attempted to use parkinsons as a defense, blaming a tremor for the trigger-pull, which did little to explain why she was forced down in a chair while he stood above her with a gun in her mouth. That's the sort of person who'd give kids as a "Christmas Gift." So no, I do not want a Christmas Gift from Phil Spector. ...And if all that wasn't bad enough, this album is full of Christmas music. Gross.
Uansett hvor bra julemusikk er, vil det fortsatt være julemusikk. Når det kommer til julemusikk, har Phil Spector produsert versjoner som stiller høyt i sin klasse, men julemusikk er en avart av musikk som jeg også kunne klart meg uten. Joda, det finnes julesanger jeg respekterer, men det finnes egentlig ingen julesanger jeg hører på. Det nærmeste jeg kommer å like julesanger, er Sufjan Stevens' Silver & Gold, og selv det er et album som lider (musikalsk) av å være et julealbum. For en VA-skive kunne den godt vært litt mer variert. Om jeg ikke hadde visst bedre, hadde jeg ikke hatt noen problemer med å tro at alle låtene var utført av samme artist. Det skal sies at den ene originale låta på skiva er en av de bedre julelåtene noensinne.
Fortsatt en av de beste albumene i en vanskelig sjanger. Tror alle versjonene på plata her kunne gått i en juleliste. Så hvorfor ikke bare spille hele plata? Til og med snorkelåta «White Christmas» låter friskt her. «Silent Night» på slutten? Ikke en fullverdig låt, men på et julealbum som er «fra Phil Spector» så er det en naturlig avslutning på denne julepresangen. Glad vi fikk den nå i jula og ikke på sommeren.
Listened to the first 10 seconds of all of these, all solid genre pieces that will happily make their way into my Christmas playlist and never be heard any other time of year. Fun research question for some rainy day : I also clicked each song at about the halfway point, nearly every one of them landed in the midway instrumental break. Is that a Phil Spector standard trick or do all do-wops have the same mid-point break?

This christmas music was good but won't blow your mind or anything... Phil Spector on the other hand... He might just blow your mind... Played this in the car with my family on the way to grandma's house. The fam jam seemed to like it? Although my dad said Darlene Love sounded too nasaly for his liking lol.

I'm getting crucified for this one. Here goes nothing. My problem with most Christmas music is that it all sounds the same and the same 15 songs are played eternally for 1-3 months (depending on the person) every year. I find most of it completely insufferable, and most of this is the same. When I listen to it, I usually listen to more of the niche stuff (Trans-Siberian Orchestra, Mannheim Steamroller, even Christmas Truce by Sabaton). None of this corporate pop crap that gives me homicidal ideations. The music itself is fine, and I know a lot of the most overplayed Christmas music is inspired by this album specifically. What I look for in my holiday music is anything that helps me appreciate everything that I have in life and remind me to help others enjoy the holiday as much as I do. Musically, this album is fine. There's nothing inherently wrong with it. Practically, this album just reflects the ideals that have taken over the Western Christmas season: commercialization, always wanting more than you have. I'm perfectly content enjoying what I have and spending time with the most important people in my life.
So many classics that I had no idea were recorded for the same project. I feel bad for those who get this album any day other than December 25th because it just feels right. You start your day with presents, cookies, family and whatever traditions you have. Then you end your day after all the festivities and put on this album on. Sure it's just a bunch of Christmas songs, but these are really the top tier.
An album of Christmas classics that pleased the family. It has managed to retain its charm and reputation in spite of being associated with a murderer. Like when everyone in Neighbours forgot that Paul Robinson killed someone.
Firstly, it is important to separate the man from the art here as he was a nasty piece of work. That said, the staying power of a number of the songs here is a testament to the musical vision there was. The wall of sound is so evocative of a particular nostalgia. A lot of credit must go to the artists themselves for their delivery too. As Christmas songs go, this is bearable at least.
Probably not best to listen to this just after Christmas. Nothing revolutionary here.
I could probably be reluctantly persuaded to listen to this once a year before swiftly moving on with my life

I find Christmas albums generally somewhat dubious, as few of them achieve any relevant creative depth. “A Christmas Gift For You From Phil Spector” is not one of these commendable exceptions, but rather, in my opinion, one of those arbitrary releases for the Christmas season. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but I don't see why this particular album should be any better than any other Christmas album from the last 60 years. It's fine to do that, but not within the scope of this project.
Fuck you Mariah Carey and Wham. This is what the real Gs listen to on christmas. (Nothing against Mariah and Wham, I was joking. This is still better tho)

Funny, I gave this a listen just yesterday, seeing a Christmas album in my collection that I'd never actually listened to before. After a quick look at the reviews, it's not very random that this album shows up on Christmas day, and it makes sense - who ever is going to listen to Christmas music other than at Christmas? The album itself, is not bad - it has that particular "Wall of Sound" of Phil Spector, and the classic Christmas songs are well performed. Just because I won't play it until next year's Christmas, and I still prefer James Brown's "Funky Christmas" and Bootsy Collin's "Christmas is 4 Ever" more, I'll give it 3/5.

A jolly Christmas from Frank Sinatra, Blue Christmas med Elvis och The Phil Spector Christmas album (som mitt exemplar utgiven 1987 heter) är de enda julskivor jag behöver. Darlene Loves Christmas (Baby please come home) är klarast lysande julstjärnan i den här samlingen, men också hennes båda andra nummer (White Christmas,Winter wonderland), The Crystals Santa Claus is coming to town och The Ronettes Frosty the snowman är värda sina fyra skumtomtar. Detta även om Phil Spector var en hemsk typ i övrigt.
Hmm! Väljs verkligen alltid albumen slumpmässigt? Skivan som på gott och ont förändrade idén om hur julmusik kan och får låta. Självklart ska denna julklapp finnas med i boken. Är för den skull bra? Så klart det är. Och allra bästa är förstås Darlene Love med Christmas (baby please come home).

What a totally random coincidence that this came up on Christmas! Phil Spector's wall-of-sound production really lends itself well to Christmas music. I'll have to add this to the Christmas music rotation (if I remember it a year from now). If I were rating this album on a scale of Christmas music, it would get a 4 or maybe even a 5. But I'm not. And I'm not gonna be spinning this in July.

One of two or three Christmas albums I wouldn’t mind listening to out of season. It’s starts off well enough, but by the time you get to Santa Claus Is Coming to Town, it’s full gas. The drumming is awesome and propulsive, bass lines are without flaw. It’s hard to separate this from Christmas dreck since it serves as the backbone to virtually all Christmas playlists, but you will be rewarded if you can.
Up from 3.5, in the holiday spirit. The Darlene Love stuff is amazing; much of the rest is good, but the Bobby whatever wasn't. And I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Clause is still unbearable.
5/5 - Is there a better Christmas album? No, there is not. I don’t want to hear this in July, but this is a perfect pick for the day.
