Well-made by talented musicians, but I guess it‘s just not my style. Would kinda slap at a renaissance faire though.

The Pogues – Rum Sodomy & the Lash (1985) On Day 102, I appreciated the vibe this album set—it felt like being in an Irish pub or on a pirate ship. I admire that it was grounded in its roots and focused on cultural storytelling. It clearly seeks to be taken seriously and succeeds in showcasing that culture, similar to how I feel about certain traditional Chinese music. However, while the production is honest, it doesn't guarantee a revisit for me. The "gravelly" vocals and folk-punk energy are interesting as a one-time experience, but they didn't provide the soul or high-energy hooks I need for a 4 or 5. A respectable 3/5 for a solid cultural showcase.

I think the Pogues are good. too much North American Irish cartoon cultural baggage going around to truly appreciate it. music: regarded. (⌐☘_☘)

I have a visceral dislike of Irish music, given how it has been forced upon me for a lot of my life. The screeching violins and whistles, often accompanying the worst excuse for dancing known to humankind, and it's the only type of music which makes my physically ill. Then again, I love Fairytale For New York and i appreciate any lyric which is a middle finger to the British establishment, the Monarchy, and which speaks of rebellion and defiance. Oh yes, I'm also Irish. No, not the fake American Irish, let's wear kilts and ginger wigs in Boston on "Patty's Day", while we sing songs about the 'Ra before heading back to our wooden mansions and lack of healthcare. No, I'm Irish in that I was born in Ireland and have lived here for most of my life. In summary, if you're going to have one Irish flavoured album on this list, it makes sense that it's this. However, this album would be much better if all the Irish sounds were stripped out.

I like the raw folk-punk energy of Rum Sodomy & the Lash, but it feels very tied to its environment. I can imagine it being much more enjoyable in a London pub than listening to it on my own in Japan.

High 3

3 stars I hadn’t heard a Pogues album before If I Fall From the Grace of God a few months back from this list, and I loved it. I was looking forward to this. It’s not bad, but comparatively it was a let down. The other record is an exhilarating experience from the jump and features one great track after another. This was a decent listen, but I was not excited about revisiting. I relistened to the other record to compare and sure enough it was a great listen again. So I’d keep one of these albums on the list and leave this as a not as good runner up I may not return to.

Hit me a week after St Patricks Day. It's fun, but not something I'd listen to unless the mood called for this specific type of music.

6 days late for St. Patrick's Day which would have earned it an extra star.

I enjoyed the album a good amount. I didn't connect to many of the songs specifically. So good vibes / music, just not individual entries that really light me up within the album.

Well done for what it is, just not my cup of tea.

I hate this album lol

I like the faster/punkier songs more than the slower ones.

Their second album, produced by Elvis Costello, sees a much more focused approach to traditional folk song and the definitive Irish wedding band in their prime. Shane McGowan is also sounding the best he ever did. A real contrast from the pop scene at the time. The title was based on a quote from Winston Churchill….

I enjoyed this quite a bit. Celtic punk in it's prime.

Didn't I listen to this last week? Oh, so you're telling me that The Pogues somehow got 2 albums on the list despite being completely average and a bit annoying and I somehow got both of them a week apart? Ok. Since they sound exactly the same, I'll copy my other review: Too much Irish folk punk. It was mildly interesting for about 3 songs, then mildly annoying.

My first experience with The Pogues was seeing them open for U2 on the Joshua Tree stadium tour in 1987. Shane McGowan had bad teeth and swigged from a bottle between shouting incomprehensible lyrics. Traditional Irish music with an edge that tells a story. The music tends to run together.

I wouldn't listen to this voluntarily, but it was very fun. I started doing Irish dances and unknowingly opened a can of beer. Very fun, but just in this context.

This is basically proto Dropkick Murphys, except these guys mix in more traditional Irish music into their songs. I don’t know who Celtic folk-punk rock is aimed at other than Irish people and maybe Matt Damon and Ben Affleck. I enjoyed more of the traditional Irish music than the punk stuff. Overall it was OK, nothing I’d return to though. 3/5 seems right for this album.

Typically enjoy these kinds of songs, this was fine. Up the RA

像海绵宝宝的歌

Good album. I enjoyed it more than I thought I would. I think overall I like this about as much as the other Pogues album though. Really good, not quite great. 3.49/5

Unexpected, but a nice surprise. Every different performer brings their own energy, and the storytelling is great. Billy's Bones and The Gentleman Soldier were my favorites. Good but not something I'd seek out again. 5.7/10.

Yar har matey

This got much better after doing some research, but the music isn't for me. Then again, I'm not Irish

Lekker iers, zelfs al komen ze uit London

Listening to this I picture myself having a few pints in a pub and everyone around me is singing right along but I don't know the words because I'm the only American there. I enjoyed this. 3.5/5

I mean it's alright

I think I liked “If I Should Fall From Grace With God” more than this offering, but that’s not to say this one was bad. The best work on here is some of the more catchy, life-affirming tracks. “A Pair of Brown Eyes”, “Sally MacLennane”, “Dirty Old Town”, and “The Band That Played Waltzing Matilda” were all great. ‘Period piece’ music done well like this is so colorful! There’s a popular review on here about how this is enjoyed by Americans who strongly claim their Irish heritage despite their lineage living here for 150 years which is probably somewhat accurate. A guy that doesn’t play about Notre Dame Football, rockstar energy drinks, and his labor Union — he probably really likes this record. He is a product of his environment which he more often than not doesn’t care to ever leave, for his views are set in stone. For better or for worse. A good 3/5

Ierse folk bangers, guinnes joepie

The Sick Bed of Cuchulainn - 4/5 The Old Main Drag - 3/5 Wild Cats of Kilkenny - 3/5 I'm a Man You Don't Meet Every Day - 3.5/5 A Pair of Brown Eyes - 3/5 Sally MacLennane - 4/5 A Pistol for Paddy Garcia - 3/5 Dirty Old Town - 3/5 Jesse James - 3/5 Navigator - 3.5/5 Billy's Bones - 3/5 The Gentleman Soldier - 3.5/5 And The Band Played Waltzing Matilda - 3.5/5

This is my 2nd Pogues album, and while I prefer their follow-up, If I Should Fall from Grace with God, this was fun listen as well. The song that stuck with me the most was A Pair of Brown Eyes, but that might change with another listen. For some extra credit I listened to the og The Band Played Waltzing Matilda by The Dubliners. I actually think I like the grit of The Pogues' version more. This is currently sitting at a 3.5 for me.

Got these guys not too long ago, but it was their following album. I was impressed to say the least. Let's see how they started out: This was more of what I was expecting after having listened to the Pogues already. Maybe not the quality they would later produce, but they definitely stick to their roots here and this feels more soulful as a result.

Have you ever started your blender with the top off? That’s this album. Starts slow, but then the contents of the blender shoot to the ceiling, covering everything on its descent down. You clean it up, but now you have PTSD from the experience, and as you toggle between pulse speed settings, you are reminded of the blast of energy. Veggies spin wildly, hitting delicate fruit bits, while ice pierces anything and everything in its way.

lol wtf is this this is actually so funny, it sounds like a circus aw the fourth song is sweet giving like spring festival vibes its a very cute album I'm sure this album means a lot to someone but not me

dans la file d'attente du bateau pirate

Drinking music to be sure. Can handle this for moments but not repeatedly. It's fine but not the classic some have made it out to be.

Kinda samey.

Irische Volksmusik - Folkpunk

There’s sthg here & I’m certain a deeper dive would be worthwhile & increase my appreciation for the band & their work. That said I felt like I was watching every Irish gangster movie montage on a loop for an hour. I don’t doubt these cats were original in their day, but all these years later they’ve been appropriated & turned into a cliche. Or that’s my initial impression anyway. 3 stars

This album appealed to my punk and Celtic tastes, with raw chaotic energy and searing ballads. The type of album you year in a pub late at night and lifts the room with its ballads.

Is it St. Patrick’s Day already? I am never annoyed to listen to The Pogues, but I don’t know that they’re a band I ever actively seek out (except maybe in mid-March). I listened to this 3-4 times and found it incredibly compelling. I’m not sure if an Irish band making anti-English music is more punk or folk, really. Either way, I like this version. “A Pair Of Brown Eyes” stood out to me every listen

I quite enjoyed a fair few of the tracks. I was surprised because as a rule I hate tin whistles. Some tracks were a bit crap especially the dirge with the female singer. Nevertheless it wasnt half bad.

The Pogues! Not my favorite band, but damn are they fun. Sometimes this stuff hits in all the right ways. I hadn't listened to a full album of theirs until today, and I'm damn glad I have now done so!

was not mentally prepared for pirate music this morning LMAO 3/5

Mye mer fornøyelig enn jeg hadde antatt, da jeg ikke kan fordra Fairytale of New York, og har derfor unngått The Pogues. Sterk 3'er.

got old after a while but not bad

Another fun album by The Pogues. I can't believe out of 1000+ albums, I get the two by this artist less than a month apart from each other.

I liked it when I was listening to it but then the rest of the day I found it really hard to remember what I had listened to. I had been in between a 3 and 4 for this and that made my decision.

They are certainly in a good mood. Or is it the alcohol speaking?

That was enjoyable! The album cover is deceptive. It was folksy, dancey, and pleasant to listen to.

Pogues gonna Pogue...

Fun album of shanty and folky pub song type tunes.

Enjoyed it more than I thought I would!

Enjoyed the storytelling , especially on the second half

Cheers

Celtic punk, folk punk, new wave. Worth a revisit.

not my cup of tea but I lowkey vibed with this

Dirty Old Town e fin.

Fun sea shanty style

6.5/10

This album makes me want to sit in an Irish Pub and drink a Guinness

This is must be the feeling of getting a score with an Irish girl after getting outta of a bar at 16 in the morning, I don't know.

I thought that parodies of irish pub music must have been exaggerating sone things, but they pretty much nail it compared to the real stuff. Really fun listen, favorite track was Sally MacLenneane

More traditional Irish than I thought it would be - I liked it but not sure I’d put it on in my daily life

Probably fun to experience live in a bar, but otherwise what a load of bollocks

Wasn't as fond as the previous The Pogues album we had. This was more straight up folk rock. Still fun though

I really have a hard time rating the Pogues. I don't really like their music but its oddly catchy.

Previously rated: #112 - If I Should Fall From Grace With God (3/5) ***************************************************** Album #999 More Irish folk rock. It's fun enough, I guess. Just not something I'd choose to listen to again. The best track I think was the one where they had a female singer, I'm a Man You Don't Meet Every Day. I just think this music sounds prettier that way versus a gruff punk sounding dude. He sounds similar to the singer of Social Distortion.

Was ready to write this off but it got better. I liked I’m a Man You Don’t Meet Everyday. Some tracks were just not good but overall it was interesting.

Sea shanties before that brief period when they became uber trendy and commercialised chart fodder. There's a degree of authenticity to these that's more charming than I'd have imagined. They sound a little chaotic, off the cuff, fun and playful.

Strange in a good way

Very Celtic, and I sang Waltzing Matilda with my college choir.

You can sodomize rum? I've got new weekend plans

It was okay. My dad has had this in his playlist for decades. So, I heard all these songs before. Plus, I also live in an area where all the white people think they are of Irish descent on Saint Patrick’s Day. This album just conjures up memories of bring in a bar that’s brimming to capacity after a Saint Patrick’s Day parade.

The fusion of styles here works better than I expected. It’s got a scruffy, drunk-poet charm that keeps things interesting for a while, but it somehow sits somewhere between a history lesson and a bar fight. Spins: 1 Playlist Additions - The Sick Bed of Cuchulainn - A Pair of Brown Eyes - Dirty Old Town

I think there’s a certain cultural gap here that keeps me from fully “getting” this, probably akin to how non-Americans feel listening to country music. Still, it’s a solid album with great energy and a unique sound.

Jaunty Irish tunes

The Pogues are an insanely fun band to listen to. The kind of music that makes want to get up and riverdance while drinking pints and pints of beer. And I don't even like beer! Not sure we needed two of their albums here though, as they sound pretty identical. The other is the better one. Key tracks: The Sick Bed of Cuchulainn Sally MacLennane

Très sympa, très The Dubliners, j’ai kiffé

Fun but too much of this is way too much

Initial first few songs were a lot more lackluster, didn't grip, but playing it through actually gave this some bite, something that was enjoyable. It wasn't mind blowing, or anything, and I don't plan on listening to this again, but it's a good song to get my feet wet in "Celtic" style music.

Pretty solid album. Not really my cup of tea but I can see how this is influential and highly regarded.

Reconvertir el folk irlandés a algo moderno y agradable, disfrutar de estas canciones que suenan a piratas y borrachos no tiene precio. Me guardo "A Pair of Brown Eyes" y "Dirty Old Town".

Some amusing stuff here. A full album (and especially an extended version) is a bit much, but could have been worse.

Enjoyable. Better in smaller doses.

Irish fun.

Aye Captain! First track is pirate-sounding song with I think country pop as its main theme. I like it.

i mean, you cannot deny this album is doing exactly what it sets out to do. the pogues are doing their own thing and i applaud them for it. i did feel sort of mocked by the bawdy rowdiness of it all while i was stuck in traffic on a slate-gray dull work day, but they'd probably think that was funny. won't revisit but go off pogues. alternate review: this album was so poguerrs

Enjoyable but the type of music that I would listen to more than once.

Wasn't sure if would like this but was really fun to listen to.

Haven't heard this for a long long LONG time. Decent, but not as good as "If I Should Fall...." or "Peace and Love" which came later.

No está mal, pero de su estilo me gustan bastante más otros

Elvis Costello & The Pogues seemed like a fun collab and I wasn't wrong. I kinda liked it.

I enjoyed the songwriting overall but although they did a good job keeping it fresh, I guess I'm not a huge fan of the Celtic sound 6.5/10

This was a weird album. I definitely haven't listened to this genre of music before. But, it was still somewhat enjoyable. Definitely not something I'd listen to on the regular. But still a cool style. There was so much energy throughout the album 7/10

I liked it fine, but no way an 80s pirate rock album should be on this list.

It’ll be 1000 reviews that are all the same if I repeat the “runtime is too long” mantra, but I’m sorry, these songs are repetitive and each too long. There’s levels of frustration with the length, & this is a lighter infraction, but it keeps good albums from being GOOD albums.

I nearly cried on the last one, and Dirty old town is brilliant. High 3

Some of my fav pogues songs on here, but as an album... hmm. Someone sort out the production maybe. Was a good shout for Armistice day though.

I started started with low expectations but it was mostly quite good

A pretty good album, I liked A Pair Of Brown Eyes and A Pistol For Paddy Garcia the most.

Third start for "And the Band Played Waltzing Matilda" alone.

I feel like I should be inclined towards this music, but in practice I couldn't really get into it. It was nice background noise though.

Pioneers of one of my favorite subgenres, what I call ethnic punk rock. Yes, the Irish are most people's favorite (Flogging Molly, Dropkick Murphys), but there are many others (Gogol Bordello, Mariachi el Bronx). In true punk style, the winning formula is very simple: infuse a pop-punk band with traditional instruments and the lyrics with your ethnic group's tales of oppression. All that said, this is hardly the Pogues' magnum opus. It's a tic long and lacks any of their bangers. Hopefully, this isn't their only entry on the list; they certainly deserve another. Influence 4. Quality 4. Hits 1. I still love this shit 4.

The Pogues are one of those acts that I know critics adore, but I haven't found myself able to find the same appeal. Like don't get me wrong, Irish Punk has its time and place, but I can't help for some reason shaking a certain gimmicky element. Wild Cats of Kilkenny is wild and wonderful instrumental. Love the distorted echo effect they are throwing on the guitar(?) -- paired with the flute melody it makes for a slightly off balance sounding song. A Pair of Brown Eyes is some solid song writing as is And THe Band Played Waltzing Matilda. Otherwise, this kind of just breezed by without much notice. As I said up front, its not that I actively dislike this, I just don't actively enjoy it either. For me this falls into a soft 3 territory

Just a straight up fun Irish Celtic rock album, well at least until the last song that was pretty sad about what sounded like a guy getting his legs blown off in a battle. Remember this band from about a year ago and I liked that album more, but this one still made me also want to drink about 15 Guinness

Just like the last Pogues album, it makes me want a pint. Really loving A Pistol for Paddy Garcia. The rest was some solid Celtic punky stuff with some good stories sprung in. Not really my cup of tea while sitting working but certainly not bad.

Very well performed and hugely influential. But it was a bit too much for me. Every song that sounds like this kinda sounds the same to me.

A toughie - I appreciate what this album is doing but it's not something I'd see myself listening to again. I can see some similarities to Tom Waits (both are drawing from traditional music styles and have distinctive vocal performances), but I think Waits has a theatricality and uniqueness to his music that draws me in a bit more.

A'ight this made me crack a wee smile. Good entertainment and you don’t have to overthink it.

Interesting album, tin whistles, irish folk and some punk rock. Good album if you enjoy songs about grief and sorrow, and the common folk.

Listened to a 1hour+ Irish Punk album without it getting anoying. That's a win for the Pogues, but they didn't win me over.

Phew. The legacy of the Pogues is huge especially in Ireland but not really for me...

A decent album that mixes trad Irish music with punk. Clearly an influence for bands like Dropkick Murphys and The Real MacKenzies

Fun enough but, like the local wine you drink on holiday tasting far better in France or Italy, I think it would sound much better in a lively Irish pub than at home.

we love irish folk music but only that 1 song about getting wasted in the UK cause a flight got delayed

Love The Pogues. Great sound - vocals and music - wit and vibe. 3+

Very enjoyable.

Great cover, good album: consistently good songs (which is another way of saying they all kind of blend together for me: that must be my English bias)

Esperaba una cagada terrible pero me agrada mucho, muy nostálgico y suena exactamente a su tapa de álbum. Nota: 3.3

It was different

the sick bed of cuchulainn- 5 the old main drag- 5 wild cats of kilkenny- 5 im a man you dont meet everyday- 5 a pair of brown eyes- 5 sally maclennnane- 6 or 7 a pistol for paddy garcia- 5 dirty old town- 6 jesse james- omg sick red dead ref. 7 navigator- 5 billys bones- 5 the gentlemen soldier- 5 and the band playing waltzing matilda- 5 i like the idea of punk retellings of old irish folk songs a lot better than the execution. but it wasnt terrible

For the Pogues, it is good album, just not a great album. Enjoyed the more traditional Irish instruments. While’s the last song was certainly a moving tale, it was a bit long at 8 minutes.

A mix of songs that worked surprisingly well

enjoyed their blend of traditional songs & instruments with contemporary sounds.

Solid album, not a huge fan of the pogues.

What the hell why not Favorite: a pistol for Paddy Garcia

I actually enjoyed this one. It feels like it's got more of the folk side of their sound than the punk side, and despite it being a specific vibe, it doesn't go on too long and get annoying like some of these do.

Fun! I didn't know VeggieTales was a genre of music 😂

Dirty Old Town and 11 lesser songs, to give the album its alternative title. It's very raucous and fun, with McGowan's vocals very much on point - in the sense that they're meant to be. But a lot of it strays too far into trad Irish for my own tastes. And then we have DOT, an ode to Salford, my home town. It's just magnificent as a song, and sends shivers right through me. Obviously the best place to hear it is at 2.58 on a Saturday afternoon at Moor Lane as Salford City come out onto the pitch. I've also got a sneaky feeling it used to play at Old Trafford back in the 90s maybe? Before Gary Neville introduced them to the Roses that is. Anyway, a good but not great album overall, with one transcendental moment.

eh... i'm sure it has a time and place, but this isn't it for me.

Just a classic Irish folk band - not sure I could have picked them out of a folk festival line up 😅

Insgesamt ganz stimmig und man schunkelt oft mit, ohne es wirklich mitzubekommen. Aber es ist mal wieder nicht so wirklich etwas bei mir hängen geblieben. 2-3/5, wobei ich eher zur 3 tendiere.

The highs were high but the lows were low. Highs: The Sick Bed of Cuchulainn, Sally MacLennae, and Billy's Bones.

I enjoy a good jig

Irkku juomalaulua ja kansallis

this is irish as FUCK boy

Good enough for the Navy, good enough for The Pogues

Shane McGowan and The Pogues have found a special place in my heart, a place of imagined nostalgia for joyful, whiskey fueled nights spent in an Irish pub that I've never actually experienced. But to be honest, even the fancy pub is just a run-down dive bar during the day, and this music is not compatible with a hangover.

The lack of a comma between the first two words of this title paints a picture of alcohol misuse to the extreme. Punctuation matters! As for the music, it’s perfectly acceptable drinking music. But with the exception of “Dirty Old Town,” I’ve heard better singles from this band.

Had fun, but got tired

I like these guys more and more every time I listen

Catchy Irish Jigs but not something I would listen to in my spare time.

Day 38 First listen- I am very biased cause I love Ireland. The album was great fun! I NEED to experience this in an Irish pub drinking Guinness. It's a NEED! (3.5/5)

I enjoy Irish music once in awhile, so this was a good listen. But it is what it is, so while I know what I'm getting into, but it's not any more than that.

I know these guys now. I heard another one of their albums on this list. Not my cup-of-tea but I'll listen to some of this.

6.5/10

Not my cup of tea but it was the pouges so what else can I say?

Wish this popped up when we were in Dublin last week

Good at what it does I suppose, just not really my kind of thing. I still think it had a lot of pretty cool and fun moments though.

ren faire music. (i've never been to one, neither do i live in a country where we have ren faires, but i know people who do, and this is the kind of music they listen to...)

I almost really like this but not quite :-) It gets a bit manic at times.

Not too bad! Some lovely instrumental cuts on there as well. No fan of the punky, irish rock style but this grew on me.

Definitely an interesting album. Has a cool mix of a more folky Irish type and also some rock/punk type. I wouldn't revisit it, but I'm glad somebody is/was doing something different for once. Not an upsetting listen at all and overall a good album.

I like The Pogues. The tunes make feel happy and I love the story telling.

This was pretty fun. It's quite Irish sounding for sure which maybe limits frequent enjoyment.

There are a lot of great Irish folk instrumentation on this album. There are also a lot of mid-tempo drinking songs that kind of crawl by. When the band really lets it rip like on "Billy Bones" it's a great time, and even when the songs are slow the backing music and vocals are always great. The highlight is probably the closer, where the story and emotion makes up for the slower pace. With a little more energy this could have been a great album, but as it is there are definitely some songs worth skipping.

I like the idea of the Pogues more than the music. I have two or three Pogues albums, and play each one or two times a year. This one does not tempt me to add another to my collection, despite it being arguably their best. Go figure.

You scumbag you maggot you cheap lousy ahh

Ok 2.5

This was pretty cool, but not sure i’d listen to again. Some beautiful and sad songs tho

pogue mahone

Rarísimo. La música de este álbum de los Pogues es una mezcla entre canciones que suenan medievales mezcladas con algo de folk y dos o tres cosas de rock por ahí. No estuvo mal, pero lo pensaría dos veces antes de volver a escucharlo.

Really energetic and lively, but with a punk delivery, which is not my thing. I’m listening to get away from aggressively cynical, this is that. Still, there are some wonderful moments, and the sound is iconic. The instrumental pieces and songs with female vocals, I will listen to again. High quality recording and mixing — everything is clear as a bell and not a muddled mess (I’m realizing how much pop music suffers when the mix is not right for the music— here, it is). I probably won’t listen to this whole album again (usually a 2). But it gets a 3 for creativity, authenticity, energy, the occasional memorable moment, and the quality of the mix.

I don’t think this is a bad album but it’s not my cup of tea.

*Weird not listening to this on St Patrick’s Day. *These guys are premier Irish punk rock. RATING - 6/10

This is very of out my depth but it's pretty nice! 7/10 Sorry for writing less recently

Oh yes, the Pogues' music immediately transports you to the steamy, maudlin, boozy and homely surroundings of a pub. Not always, but often fun. 3/5

im brand new to this group, and enjoyed most of the album, but found it dragged most of the time. i see this as an album that could really grow on me with more listens - there's a lot of heart.

Another decent album from them. Plus, “Dirty Old Town” was covered very nicely on Rod Stewart’s debut solo album.

On one hand, this is an interesting album that is sometimes funny and sometimes sad lyrically. Musically though, I am less positive. It doesn't feel interesting enough for me. And I in the end I am left with a deep feeling of regret that an Irishman wouldn't be better at imitating an Australian accent. Well, let's call it a very weak 3 to be generous.

I've heard the Pogues before but never the whole album. Wasn't sure at first but it grew on me!

Fine I guess. Sort of interesting vibes but they are overshadowed by an ‘80s sheen that feels too sparkly and brittle to my ears.

I do enjoy the music of the Pogues, but the fact that it’s the same style every song gets a little old. These are pretty good songs but it could use more variety.

As soon as it started, I rolled my eyes. I was very not excited to listen to it. I think it’s my vast overexposure to this type of music, mostly Dropkick Murphys. (A little backstory: my partner’s entire family LOVES Dropkick Murphys and I’ve been dragged to so many concerts, I refuse to go to more. It all sounds the same. Accordion, banjo, Irish accent, growly shout, finger point as you push the growl through your throat. Snarl. Every. Single. Song.) Unfortunately, The Pogues got lumped into my despise. Despite my initial negative reflex, I listened hoping this would change my mind. I guess it sort of did. I was fully ready to give it a 2. When we hit Sally MacLennane, and on through Dirty Old Town, it “won me over” and I decided that I like this just fine. Haven’t we had a Pogues already? Surely this list does not need more Irish folk punk. I still hate this type of music.

Never liked them drunk shanties' shouting much.

good old irish folk. def not what i had in mind going into this album, but it such was a delight on a cold winter morning. esp loved the waltzing Matilda track at the end

Interessant, das ist es auf jeden Fall, aber nichts, was ich mir jeden Tag anhören würde.

Classic

Does indeed sound like an Irish Pub.

I love The Dubliners to death but can't find the same enthusiasm for The Pogues.

Eh, they're no Flogging Molly.

Pogues uten Fairytale of New York??? Alltid gøy med irsk folkemusikk, men krever flere Guinness å høre gjennom hele.

This was all right, it didn't move me but I made it through.

It’s unique for sure. A bunch of Irish folk punk songs that are fairly catchy but get repetitive. It’s not bad, just very specific. 2.5/5 Might listen again

Feels very standard Irish bar music. Perfectly serviceable if that’s what the evening calls for.

This some pirate type songs

I love Shane McGowan's delivery and writing. It's a great album and my wife loves the band in general. Irish punk isn't my first go-to and Irish folk isn't either...but in a pinch it's a great way to start the work day.

Arrrrrr... ey Capt'n! I now feel like an irish pirate 😅 I guess pretty groundbreaking for that time

I'm a fan of bands like Flogging Molly and Dropkick Murphys and I like to drink a pint of Guinness (or 5), but this album seemed a bit bland to me. Nothing really terribly wrong with it, just a bit meh. Still, fav track: Sally MacLennane

not really my thing sorry irish people

I reviewed The Pogues' other album back on Valentine's Day this year, and I gave it four stars. I liked the overall sound of it, and I thought the songwriting was strong too. One quick note about this album title before I jump in: I had to look up the meaning of the title, because without commas, it reads as "rum sodomy" which sound incredibly unappealing. But enough about my punctuation nitpicks, let's fire up another album that's turning 40 with me this year! I didn’t care for this effort from The Pogues as much as I enjoyed If I Should Fall From Grace With God. The songwriting on this album was good, and the overall sound was enjoyable, with a good mixture of upbeat, rocking songs and slower ballads, but I felt like this album relied too heavily on Shane MacGowan’s vocals and on the accordion and tin whistle. The accordion and tin whistle really wore me down over the course of the album, and I would have liked to hear more songs that were guitar or banjo based in their sound. I really liked Spider Stacy’s vocals on “Jesse James,” and I would have liked to hear more of his singing. Even though I wasn’t a huge fan of this album, I still thought it was well made and featured a unique sound. It’s not the sort of thing I’d come back to, but it was an enjoyable experience.

This is music that white Americans who pretend to be Irish listen to. They predominantly live on the East Coast, most likely Boston or Philadelphia. They like pahhking cahhs, and drinking in bahhs. They often get into fistfights and a large part of their vocabulary is racist and homophobic slurs. Most of them are named Tommy (which they pronounce as Towmy), Mikey, Sully, or Marky (Mahhky). They won't shut up about their city's sports teams. They REALLY like fistfights. Anyway, the album is pretty good. I couldn't listen to it all the time, but as a change of pace, I don't hate it. Every song sounds the same, though.

Some great songs on this but some stinkers also.

I don’t think I liked this one quite as much as If I Should Fall From Grace With God. Favorite songs were The Old Main Drag, Sally MacLennane, Dirty Old Town, and The Band Played Waltzing Matilda.

Honestly I didn't hate this album as much as I thought i would. When at a bar after a few drinks would definitely give this a better rating.

The only context I could listen to this album again would be at my local pub working on getting blackout drunk on pints of Guiness and shots of whiskey.

It's fun and reminds me of hanging out at a friend's house drinking and smoking in the early 90's. They are very good at setting a mood and telling a story. It's an enjoyable album.

look its great i really do like it but im not sure we need two Pogues records in here

I'm not sure I would ever choose to listen to it. BUT I found myself quite enjoying it. Maybe it's my Irish blood? It's a 2.5 rounded up.

I've been hearing The Pogues since I was a little girl thanx to my dad and I like all their albums with Shane MacGowan (The Pogues released 5 albums with Shane MacGowan on lead vocals, 2 with Spider Stacy on lead vocals & a live album with Joe Strummer who took over vocals after Shane MacGowan was fired for excessive drinking in 1991) super fun stuff but it all starts to sound pretty same-y to me which is why I'm giving this album a very SOLID 3/5 it's very good just not essential IMO If you love Irish music this is likely a 4/5 for you or maybe even a 5/5. I don't know.

Music for tourists who haven't gone to an actual concert since the 70s, who then take a weekend trip to Dublin, go straight to Temple Bar and are all amazed about there being "authentic Irish live music" and the proceed to drunkenly video-document (with the flash on) a full five minutes of "I drank whiskey and beer, too ra loo ra la."

3.5 - cool Irish punk

Correcto

Fine art british folk

Boisterous, loud, energetic and infectious. The Pogues hurl Irish folk into the 20th century with a shove, seamlessly blending punk and tradition into a superbly original sound. Best Tracks: - A Pair Of Brown Eyes - Dirty Old Town Worst Tracks: - The Old Man Drag Rating: 7.5/10

***A good Irish album

More fun than I'd expected!

I can’t say I relate to the heavy drinking theme explored here, but I can find great enjoyment in the humour of it all, and the surprising earnestness of many sections. Of course the reappearing core is the Celtic rock sound, which is almost always fun, and is only right to appear alongside talk of taverns, rum, barfighting, et cetera. The aforementioned earnestness is most prevalent on the closing track-cum-historical ballad, And the Band Played Waltzing Matilda - but also appears on the standout track for me, A Pair of Brown Eyes, with such lovely lyrics from MacGowan and some fine bittersweet instrumentation to pair it with. How’d I lose my job? Drinking at the pub. How’d I end up in the clink? Had too much to drink.

There is a wonderful kind of melancholy about this record. It sounds incredibly Irish, in a good way. I wouldn't be a huge fan of a lot of the instrumentation of the album. A lot of it is a style that I don't really like, however i can tell that it's very very solid, the playing is great. The musicianship is quite wonderful. I think I'd lean with a 3, which reflects it not really being my thing, but also a good record. I'm not sure how often I would dust it off to listen to it, but it's enjoyable none the less

Twiddle dee doo, twiddle dee dum, this album was a little bit of fun.

Tom Waits yesterday, The Pogues today - the generator clearly won't be happy until I'm swigging whisky in the gutter. I preferred Waits, but this did prove the Pogues aren’t just for Christmas.

At first, when I pressed play, I was like “ahh hell naw!” Then as I kept listening my foot started tapping and a warm feeling arose in my chest lol this shit makes you happy & I can’t hate on that. Not my cup of tea but I enjoyed it nonetheless!

Does not compare to If I should fall from grace with God, but still very pleasant. 6.5/10 Fave: Sally McLennane

Nice album but not something i would listen on repeat since im sober

Definitely one that I need to be in the mood for. A whole album of this in one sitting is a bit much for me. But in doses I like it more than not.

Interesting Irish folk+punk rock, although not something that will be in my regular rotation.

He's a great songwriter/storyteller, and the emotion in his voice makes up for it's roughness. I normally don't listen to this much Pogues at once except on St. Patrick's Day but Rainy Night in Soho is a sentimental personal favorite of mine.

Felt like I could appreciate it more than I truly enjoyed it, but it was a good listen on a chilly Friday afternoon. Maybe I should have downed a few pints of Kilkenny first?

This was a fun irish-sounding punk album. I'd listen to this again. 3/5

Sounds like Flogging Molly. And now that I know this was here before Flogging Molly, I know I have been missing out.

a fun listen absolutely. Only a strong 3 just because i don't think I'll listen to this again in its entirety, but still worth listening to this one.

dirty old town .. lalala ;-)

My friend in high school fucking loved The Band Played Waltzing Matilda.

getting in the spirit for st patricks day i suppose fun listen but that's about it, accents kinda irritated me icl

31/1001 Since I didn’t grow up with Celtic folk music there really isn’t anything, which makes this particularly noteworthy or interesting. Yeah the songs are decent and catchy, but nothing really special. 2,5/5

I always enjoy Irish bands and they are fun to listen to

Good album with some really great songs. I can listen to a few songs a at a time, but the whole album is a little overwhelming.

I'm looking forward to this one! I have memories of hearing the Pogues in a bar in Dublin. It will be nice to revisit with good headphones and while sober(ish? I'm stoned lol). Opening track "The Sick Bed of Cuchulainn" is quite the little bop. The bridge where the chick pukes at the church during midnight mass is really something. I ate dinner so I walked away from the computer for a few songs (was listening on headphones). I definitely like the faster songs than the slower ballads, with "Jesse James" being the example I can think of the most. I love between verses on "Navigator" there's some beautiful finger picking which I think is a mandolin. Maybe I changed my mind about the fast with "Billy's Bones" although Shane MacGowan impresses by being able to say those words as fast as Busta Rhymes. Overall, I enjoyed this album. I really appreciate Shane MacGowan's voice, the character in it is immense. I don't know how much of it I will be returning to, but I'm glad having done it.

Classic, reminds me of childhood. Its a bit much for me to listen to casually though.

Not really my thing, but very clearly good within it's genre

Them’s fighting words

This would have been really good in an Irish pub but felt a bit weird alone in my car.

Pretty fun. 3.5

This album is very straightforward. Irish folky drinking music that is exactly as it's described. Is it good and entertaining? Sure. Does it deserve to be on a list of albums you MUST hear before you die? Probably not.

Good bits are good, sad bits are sad.

Felt like I was on a pirate ship listening to very laid back shanties. Not terrible though, but would have liked a little more spirit.

Chaque pièce est en soi réjouissante, mais, comme genre, je trouve que la fusion musique irlandaise-rock s’essouffle

Was not expecting some Irish st pattys day shit but not bad

A fun album to listen to every now and then

нормалек, вайбово, но специально бы слушать не стал. напомнило фильм монти-пайтон про средневековье. подойдет для вечеринки в средневековом стиле или посиделок в пабе)

Fun, but not something I’d ever choose to listen to again

Lots of fun and energy

A fun listen on a Wednesday morn.

Yes, thank you for making celtic punk a thing but after listening to Flogging Molly and alike bands, this mostly feels frustratingly slow.

A Pair Of Brown Eyes and Dirty Old Town are great songs. Rest are ok 3/5

Þrjú Írlönd í röð. Dirty old town er mjög gott lag, hitt rennur saman ágæta þjóðlagasúpu. Og nú ætla ég ekki að hlusta á Pogues það sem eftir er vikunnar.

Aivan loistavaa irkkufolkkia taas. Osassa kappaleissa myös hyvä länkkärifiilis. Hyväntuulista kamaa. Toinen Pogues levy muistaaksenu silti parempi. Parhaat: The Sick Bed of Cuchulainn, A Pistol For Paddy Garcia, Dirty Old Town

I nailed this the first time we listened to them. Some great fun songs on here. Probably best listened to drunk at a party and not really listening. It does what it wants; sitting listening to this alone, analyzing it doesn't make sense.

Don't really like it any more or less than If I Should Fall from Grace with God. 3.5/5

Fun album, great music. Just will listen to situationally.

Ah, the band with the depressing Christmas song! I find this type of irish-like rock/folk music very fun and cozy in certain settings, especially when experienced live. But a whole album like this wasn't really my thing... perhaps I wasn't in the right mood, I don't know. Admittedly, 'Sally MacLennane' is really catchy when hearing it again now one day after listening to the album first time. Still feels like a 3 for me, but if this really is your jam I can see how it deserves a higher rating.

Was looking forward to this as I love "Dirty old town" and "Parting Glass" but was a bit disappointed. It's mostly just standards of folk tunes. While good it is nothing that marks this as anything special compared to any other Irish folk band really. Maybe they were the first to become popular? Maybe my jetlag makes me not in the mood for jigs but a 3 star is all this gets today.

I feel like a pirate

3.5 stars. The album is at it's best with it's upbeat sea shanty-esque "Billy's Bones", "The Gentleman Soldier".

It's kinda better than a lot of the threes I've given in that musically more is going on but I can't give Shane McGowan more than 3.

Pogues doing what they do best, jolly and sorrowful at the same time but a bit tiring at times

A bit more redundant than the last Pogues album on this list. This was fine, but nothing groundbreaking by any means.

If you like a consistent, never changing sound throughout your whole album, this is the one for you.

I imagine that this would sound amazing live in an Irish pub, while you're drinking Guinness, shouting loudly at your lads, and getting smashed. I can only imagine this since this is not an experience I have personally had. This album wasn't bad - it was admittedly kind of fun - but "vaguely pirate music" is very much not my thing.

Fun and catchy overall. Wild Cats of Kilkenny is a nice atmospheric instrumental. Surprisingly emotional at times, eg the female vocal led ballad I'm a Man You Don't Meet Every Day. Followed by A Pair of Brown Eyes, strong also. The Band Played Waltzing Matilda is a great closer. Not really feeling all of this, but there's always a time and place for Celtic drinking songs. *** 1/2

Opzich wel leuk, maar niet alle bangers

Good, and brings back some memories, but gets a little samey at the end of the album

Mixed feelings. Know it well because my mother had it. Some nice tunes but also very annoying to have to listen to a whole album of it, whilst not in a rough pub or club.

3.....

Good Celtic punk

We got this band's previous record just 20 albums ago. Everything I wrote there still applies, so I'll copy it below. Just another point underscoring that this is a fundamentally backwards-looking subgenre, even when it's well executed, as by The Pogues. Although mixing and production are extremely rough, which costs this album a star - Costello's production is horrible. It's also what makes me unable to enjoy his own work; I saw "punk" and assumed I would hate this - but sometimes you get surprised in a positive way. This was a fun and well-done album. It sounds like a blueprint for what a lot of folk metal and folk rock (especially of the pirate/shanty variety) still sound like today (which may be a testament to my long-held belief that these sub-genres suffer from a fundamental dearth of originality and creativity).
