I like \"Lord Only Knows\".

Kuvittelin etten tykkäis tästä kamalan paljon, mut turns out että tää onkin aika jees! Hyvä keveä poppirokkimeno ihan omilla mausteilla 4/5

If jesse pinkman was ever turned into an album I'm pretty sure this is what he would sound like. I like it.

I love Beck. I don't always love what Beck produces, but I love that he always sounds like himself even when every track is so different and genre-distorting.

Pretty good if not a bit long

Liked this one alot

Pretty good at the time.

Guy has amazing range. This is one of my favorite of his.

Interesting music across the album. Appreciate it more now than I did back in my teens. Fun samples and interesting voicings.

Some great songs, others are a bit difficult to listen to. But, undoubtedly, a great work of art.

Some long albums drag (most rap albums). This one is almost like a radio station being flipped from channel to channel, held together by Beck's voice and his marriage of hip-hop beats and blues guitar. His best album still and doesn't drag a bit.

A genre bender, beck is a fabulous artist and this is a great album

Good album. More laid back than I thought that it would be, but good.

was not bad. I would describe this as aggressive country music.

Decent, just a bit formulaic

Beck you big beautiful weirdo. Musically and tonally quite varied, this sets out the palate for much of his later work, albeit perhaps with less focus on any one particular style that occurs in subsequent records. It's a really enjoyable listen that never quite settles, keeping it continually interesting.

"I got two turntables and a microphone". Iconic line for an iconic album. So much creativity and energy. It still feels fresh more than 25 years later.

Did I like this because I love where it's at? Probably, yes. Did I like this because I listened to it on a beautiful summer weekend, exactly the vibe that Beck promotes? Probably, yes. Did I like this because of nostalgia? Probably, yes. Did I like this more than it deserves? Yeah but fuck it who cares

I went into this expecting some sort of 90s Britpop album but this was way better than I could've imagined, great stuff

innovative and original, great use of sampling.

Swag….

An awesome blend of contrasting elements. Commonly featured are hip-hop beats, country licks and electric noise. Even classical music appears for a moment, only to be replaced by a wholly different potpourri of sounds. Also, great-sounding drums

Kännner en... 4

Is he really a Scientologist?

4.1 - this was one of the first albums I ever purchased and has a strong bit of nostalgia for me. Still holds up today - “Where it’s At”, “Novacane” and “Readymade” are all top notch.

Something new, yet a reminder of the past. Lovely.

3.5/5. This album was fun, I liked it. All the songs were enjoyable.

In the time of

Diggaan tyylistä. Pitäis kuunnella useemmin ja tutustuu Beckiin laajemmin

I've had this album for 20 plus years but haven't played it for a decade at least. Its still pretty magical. The genre hopping that annoys some people works well for me. Hes equally good at fast and slow songs. An unpredictable joy. 4

Guero is his album that I really got into. Didnt think I had heard Odelay the whole way through but I knew pretty much all of it. This has some really good tunes; Devils Haircut, Derelict and Where It’s At are my faves

Great album

very enjoyable !!!

This album is a great one to show when showing people Beck. It's a solid representation of him: strong songwriting mixed with outstanding production techniques. Beck is such a stalwart, and I always appreciated his music and the way that he was a gateway musician to a lot of other genres. I think it's easy for a young kid to listen to this album and then get into slightly more abstract sounding indie rock for example, and I love that.

Fun album I actually knew two songs on this album!

This is the record with which Beck Hansen legitimises his charisma as the most representative singer-songwriter of the 1990s, when the wild style of rap was combined with the courtly style of the folk ballad. (7/10) FT: Jack-Ass, Novacane

i give it 4 surprisingly! i usually dont like 90s music but this worked.

A pretty classicly 'strange' 90s album. Beck has always been great at pushing the boundaries of contemporary music, and Odelay is nothing if not a great example of this. While some of the music does not speak to me, a lot of the album is wonderfully creative and showcases Beck's ability to create popular music without succumbing to the norms of the scene. Not only does this album push a lot of boundaries, it is incredibly varied. The songs range from eclectic, short bangers to longer, cozier suites. Although I am not rating this a five, I believe this is an excellent album for this list, and deserves more praise than it probably is getting. Highlights: 1, 3, 4, 6, 8, and 10.

This was an enjoyable relisten. I forgot how many songs were on here that are absolute bangers.

Good, maybe should listen to it more closely though

Not much to say, it's a really good album from a really good artist.

NOW that's what I call 90s indie rock

Very good!

His best

A classic 90s album.

Pretty good vibe. Beck isn't something I'd listen to of my own volition normally but really should change that. 4.5

He has a way with composition, and heading in very unpredictable directions. The randomness of some lyrics sometimes feels like a bleak decoy of words due to running out of ideas. Still some great tracks

Pretty great.

you already KNOW i love me a 90s alternative rock album babyyyyy. Devil's haircut is nostalgic for me. Hotwax is great! the guitar riff in the beginning reminds me of a late 70s classic rock vibe. The vocals are kind of like spoken word. love it.

Enjoyed this one a lot.

This was funky and fun and had some bangers. A totally varied album as well. Much preferred to previous Beck

A good mix, got better as it went on

Solid. Beck has always had good songs but I wasn't sure whether he had good albums from front to back. This one was pretty good. I feel like Kid Rock stole his country rock meets rap alternative approach from this album. Kudos Beck, for shame Kid Rock. The hits are well-known and well-respected (Devils Haircut, New Pollution, Where It's At) but I also thought Hotwax, Minus, High 5, and Ramshackle were particularly good lesser knowns. Overall, the album is full of songs with strange but interesting lyrics and wordplay (like most of his work), unique beats and mixes (including cool guitarwork and basslines), and plenty to keep you guessing about what it's all about. Like I said, solid.

Didn't like the last 2 tracks and considered giving this a 3 star but the rest of it is brilliant.

Good album

Rating: 7/10 Best songs:

Knew a few songs already but all in all pretty good!

I remember downloading this album a long time ago and checking it out. I deleted it from my computer shortly after. Regardless, I decided to go into this with a fresh outlook. Who knows, maybe I'd like it more now. Well, that turned out to be exactly true. This is much better than I remember it being. There are some hit or miss areas, but I admire the diversity of sounds and meshing of genres. Despite that, it still maintains a cohesive sound. This is definitely a record that will grow on me over time., as proven already.

hidden gem of an album!

I enjoyed it

It's fucking weird right? I don't have a lot experience with Beck at all. I know loser, which is a fucking bop and a half. However, with this album, I got nothing. It's weird. The samples are out there, Novacanes ending with the weird spaceship-hip-hop beat. Beck is rapping over this right? As weird as it is, it is equally as fun. Just plain old fun man.

Neat mashup of genres here. Some hip-hop (very Beastie Boys), some hard rock, and some metal elements. I like the samples too.

A very good album - I can see why it is on the list but I could never get fully into it - tried again yesterday after 20 years or so, still the same.

Not really sure how to categorize this album other than, "I dig it". Just some really great tracks.

High points for creativity. There isn't much that sounds like this, and there's enough songs that deliver, that the album is entertaining (though Derelict is certainly a pass).

a weird kind of album with a layed back feel to it that

This is the Beck I know from high school - a mix of live instruments and samples, digital and analog, with the slacker/stoner drawl tying it all together.

This is a mostly fantastic album. There are quite a few duds but the good songs more than make up for it.

Solid album but none of the Beck singles that I’m super familiar with

Cool album. A real kitchen sink full of ideas and styles. 4 🌟

This fith album of Beck is a blast. Great alternative rock songs (Devils Haircut, Where It's At) on an album that's catchy as hell.

Beck at his best It sees all of the ideas Beck put forward with Mellow Gold get fleshed out and expanded upon to create a real gem of an album

Cool album. A real kitchen sink full of ideas and styles. 4 🌟

Kinda sad that Beck's a scientologist

Highly inventive alt-rock. Not really to my taste, but undoubtedly worth listening to.

Genius stuff

Beck I need in small doses. This is a good album, a lot of solid sonic ideas floating around, but after one too many tracks it just becomes a mash. It’s just kind of what happens when “idea stew” is your approach to anything artistic rather than a definitive vision, and I really get that sense from Beck. Favourite track: “Jack-Ass”

Beck ! Odelay - Reminds my of 'The Kinks' meets 'Beastie Boys' at times - Psychedelia sound reminiscent of The Beatles - Hotwax was an instant favourite 'Where It's At' I remember hearing this before, great song Ramshackle a definite favourite, very mellow great closing track

Not bad, this Beck album is pretty good

I enjoyed it much more than I remember. Maybe my taste in music and appreciation of Back has changed over the years

Probably Beck’s best, lots of good songs and not much filler

This is what would pop up in my mind when thinking of a way to describe alternative music. Catchy tunes, great use of samples, an excellent first impression of the artist.

Some of this is great, some of this is hard to listen to. Kelly wanted to stab herself in the neck with a pair of scissors.

Takes me back to 1995-96 (got a Devil's haircut).

The Thetans probably blessed him for this one. I remember listening to this at Brett Dullum’s house way back when. Beck is like the love hold of Hip Hop and Bob Dylan, multisyllabic, long winded flowing over dope breaks. I hear Dan the Automator of Dr. Octagon, Lovage fame, The Gorillas, The Avalanches, Fat Boy Slim; white boy break beat samples both expansive and diverse. I like a lot of his simpler 4 piece songs without samples. There are three more experimental songs on this album that I find nearly unlistenable. But the greatness overpowers some stinkers, and one of the stinkers has a great breakdown. Solid B+. 4 .

Another highschool banger. Blasted this in my cd player while working on the raspberry harvesters. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3iXJFDoKEvI&ab_channel=OxboInternational

classsic psyché rock

just good beck fun and some nonsense. Like all his albums really. It's probably a 3.5 but voting 4 as better than some other 3's..

Album très cool 👍🏻

Beck’s combo of ennui and irony really depresses me but this is one of his strongest albums so I’ll be kind

I liked it a lot! But I like Beck and this was fun

At the time it was hailed as a masterpiece. Not that great in my opinion, but still one of the best records of the ear and a milestone of first part of the 90s

This is good but Loser is not on it

Beck is weird, but it often is good weird. Hard to explain.

I liked it, but I can't explain why...

Quintessential 90s alternative music. I grew up to this.

I loved Mellow Gold and was a bit non plussed with Odelay when it first came out, but I've warmed to it. It's still very very weird, and you gotta admire than weirdness being crammed into such a catchy pop sound. Fave track - "Minus", maybe? Though all the tracks released as singles are banging. Also really like "Ramshackle", as I like Beck in mellow mode...

Liked every other song.

Loved how eclectic it was, lots of different genres being fused together

Defininte 90's feel. Beastie Boys vibe. Okay that's what Beck sounds like

I missed this album. Just great.

Don’t have much to say again but I liked this album a lot, a lot better than the first beck album we had.

I always enjoy a great beck album

Interesting to revisit, can see a lot of the directions that Beck would go later in his career hinted at here. Has a lot of highlights that I had remembered, but these were also contrasted by some abrasive elements I thought didn't age as well. The squelching and yelling through a megaphone that kept popping up were way more jarring than I remembered. This listen probably explains why I don't go back and listen to the full album as often as some of his others. (His other albums with the Dust Brothers like Midnite Vultures and Guero for example) That being said, "Where It's At" is still a classic

Maybe a bit hard rock, but not bad - 3.5

There's a reason he's been around so long. Thoroughly enjoyed this.

One of my fave Beck albums, but y'all now I am addicted to Beck, so.

Strong album from a good rocker with, to my surprise, a couple of big hits that I knew already (Devil's haircut, The New Pollution, Where it's At, ...). I like how he plays with different styles. Sometimes it's a bit too slow/expiremental for me, but that's the only reason I'm not giving 5 stars.

loved it, I need to listen to more beck

Men mange gode sange 3,5

Quintessential Beck. Break Beats and Beatin his own meat

hmm very interesting. Apparently that jumping thing is a breed of dog - the rare Hungarian Komondor? Thought it was just some abstract mop looking object being thrown over a barrier

Pretty close to a 5…. Proper record this; goes all over the place, in a good way!!

average

not as good as Joni Mitchell’s Blue

It always seemed like Beck was cool because some kids started saying that Beck was cool… but really, Beck kinda sucks.

Experimental for the sake of it, but bangers aswell. 3.5

Jag har svårt för Beck.

Världens coolaste scientolog. Får bli favoritbetyget 3 igen, denna gång stark.

i can see how this is for someone but it's not for me. and the final track being random looping beeps felt very stupid. but i will say there's a ton of variety here, every song has its own vibe, which makes it all feel like it's a bit scattered and lacking cohesion as a musical idea

Very uneven, some songs I would rate a 4 some a 2. Some part I loved, some I hardly wanted to listen through to the end. Weird!

7/10 - this is punk. Solid around Fav Tracks: Devils Haircut, Where It's At Heard before? ---–- ❌ Saved a Song? ----- ✅ Saved Album? --–-- ✅ Will Listen Again? -- ❌ Album Cover -------good boy

For a long time, I couldn't figure out what was on the album cover. Some kind of barrier, with either a cloud or hay flying above it... Considering I was listening to the music on an iPod, where the covers were quite small, it didn't make it any clearer. Only later did I realize it was a Hungarian Komondor dog, and once you see that, you can't unsee it. It's the same with music: you can go a long time without getting Beck, not understanding this chaos of country, hip-hop, electronica, folk, psychedelia, and everything else, how he made this music, why he made it... But then something clicks in your head, and you realize — wow! A unique kaleidoscope album, where everything is simultaneously pieced together from a variety of pieces and yet organized. Embracing the immensity and cramming in the uncrowded, so to speak. A good album, just shy of a four star mark.

This album gave me the same impression as most other Beck records - musically competent, wildly creative and original, and yet I feel little to no emotional connection with it. The collage of different genres and the constant shifts between styles are very interesting, and musically more exciting than in his later albums. I really love the experimental pieces, like Derelict and Novacane, but the more melodious, folk-oriented songs like Jack-Ass bore me. Overall, Odelay is probably one of his best ; but nothing particularly grabbed me, moved me or made me want to instantly play it again. Just solid musicianship, certainly enjoyed but also soon forgotten. Beck is definitely one of those artists I respect more than I actually like. 6/10

I usually like albums that jump between styles when it is well done, and Beck somehow makes it work on this one. It’s weird, fun and full of catchy songs. Not every track grabs me, but the best ones are excellent. A really enjoyable album and an easy one to come back to.

Experimental mix of old blues/rock and samples with the cool persona of Beck. The bravery is rewarded with a coherent and fun album.

This was way too much hip hop for me when it came out, but now I’m ready for it and realize this is a good three and a half star album.

Did Cake listen to Beck? This is fine.

I appreciate what Beck managed to do as a creative, blending so many genres in some alright compositions. The sound just sounds muddy and kind of flat. I get Beck being included, this one might not be necessary. Rounded up from a 2 point something.

3.3 I have to say, I dont this is something I would listen to over and over again, and that's probably just what it would need to appreciate the album

Det souliga elpianointrot i Where its at känns som tidlös musikhistoria. I övrigt nickar jag medryckande till Devils haircut, Lord only knows och New Pollution.

I now hear a lot of the influences from some of the more obscure stuff I’ve listened to here. Beck packages it all up into a more listen-able album.

Where it's at, Sissyneck, Diskobox

Hell yeah brother. 2 turntables and a fn microphone! Long time beck listener, what an interesting dude. The epitome of experimentation & throwing stuff at the wall. Some of it sticks. I wouldn’t say this is his best album, or an incredible album, but there’s some good picks on here that became classics of that era. This will be a low rating for some, and I get it. His music is very experimental, his lyrics very imaginative and incongruous or inaccessible at times. It doesn’t always work. But sometimes they click, and you get something super sublime, the stuff he’s known for best.

Vanskelig. Beck har alltid vært litt for kul for meg. Noen av låtene er jo helt der oppe (where it’s at, The new pollution). Snill treer.

Mye bra, mye rart, mye teit.

I've not heard all of Beck's albums but of those I know this my least favourite. While inventive, it's neither wild nor wooly enough to really catch your interest, and sometimes feels crudely cobbled together from different genres in a way that leaves the seams showing.

Ok, interesting but I didn’t love it

Not my cup of tea

The amount of genre-hopping and the growth from his last album is impressive, but considering the rest of Beck's discography, I've always thought of this as kind of bridge album that he made before he got really good.

I enjoyed this more than I thought I would. I only knew Back as the “Loser” guy, and this sounds like great development from the sound of that song. I considered rating it higher, but I feel like this album wears out its welcome as it goes on, though maybe that’s because I was tired when I listened to it. 3/5

An interesting mash up of musical styles and beats but I’m never emotionally drawn in by Beck

Heard of beck, but only because of that one song. I know he’s not my style so low expectations. Devils haircut is pretty cool. Good writing and production. A little goofy which I’m expecting all of this to be. Not a fan of the short guitar bridge. I’ve heard hot wax before I think. This one is pretty good but I hate some of the production choices. No need for the mic feedback, adds nothing and honestly kind of ruins a good chorus. Good lyrics again aside from that. A little too much going on with this one. Nice change of pace with lord only knows, this is what I expected all of the songs to be like. Good pop song. Cool (but short) guitar solo. None of the songs sound the same from start to finish which I can’t tell if I like or hate. The new pollution is really fun, love the sax/keys solo. Catchy aside from that as well. Love what they did with the sound engineering at the end. Highlight the sax. Derelict is choppy and disorienting. Not a fan of this one. I can appreciate the uniqueness and his range, but I just don’t like the song. Really good guitar/production as a whole on novacane. Bullshit lyrics. This is the beck I was expecting. Terrible autotune ruins what’s actually a well written song. Another really choppy one, should’ve ended 3 times before it actually did. I like Jack ass a lot. If he stuck to this style I think I’d like the album a lot more. Awesome harmonica on this one. Where it’s at is a banger. Carried by that guitar riff. Lyrics are whatever. Production is so damn good. Minus is fine. I like the guitar/production again but the vocals are so bullshit. Hate the last 15 seconds too. Sissyneck is better. Pretty good pop song. Good production again. Readymade is forgettable. Fine song nothing special to it. High 5 sucks. This dude should just not be rapping. Skipped this one half way through I just couldn’t. I actually like rmashackle a lot. Couldn’t be anymore different from high 5. Emotional well written song. Did not like computer rock at all. One of the worst outros I’ve ever heard. Kind of encapsulates the album. There’s a lot of good but also a lot of “what was this dude thinking.” Musically it was really impressive, but as an album it was meh. 2.6/5 stars.

I’ve always felt that Beck was quite overrated. I think a lot of the time the added sound effects, drum breaks and other gimmicky instrumental bits are there mainly to cover for the fact that many of his songs aren’t that interesting - as if his answer for writing a mediocre song isn’t to try to improve the writing but to just add “cool” effects on top to distract. It comes off to me as very showy but with little substance. That said, there are a few songs that are catchy enough to grow on me a little.

This is my third Beck album of the challenge and probably the one I was most familiar with before sitting down for the daily listen. Looking back at my previous reviews, I found Sea Change and Guero fairly average overall, so I was interested to see where Odelay would land for me. For me, Odelay contains Beck’s best song — “Devils Haircut”. What a brilliant indie tune. It instantly grabs your attention and perfectly sets the tone for the album. There are plenty of other strong tracks here too, especially “Where It’s At”, “Minus” and “Sissyneck”. What stands out most about Beck is how distinctive his sound is. You know it’s him almost immediately. Odelay jumps between genres in a completely carefree way, blending indie rock, hip hop, blues and alternative music together while still sounding cohesive throughout. The album constantly shifts direction but somehow keeps that unmistakable Beck identity from start to finish. My only real criticism is that the album does feel a little too long at 14 tracks and over 50 minutes. There are a couple of songs early on that could probably have been trimmed without hurting the overall experience. Still, this is comfortably the Beck album I’ve enjoyed most so far in the challenge. Favourite tracks: “Devils Haircut” and “Sissyneck” Least favourite tracks: Everything is worth listening to, although the album could definitely have been shorter Album artwork: Cool album cover

I frequently found myself tapping my foot to the groove here, but I think that's all the further I got with enjoying it. Nothing grabbed me too closely, and there were more internet dialup noises for no reason during the album. I don't understand why bands feel the need to do that. Ultimately, this feels like the type of music you put as background to a travel montage in a movie. Perfect 3.

Damn it, dis is groovy. I'll give it a 3 or 4 tomorrow based off how much pleasant residual funk remains in my system.

this feels like music fallen out of time and context

Some tunes are not bad at all, though it is too inconsistent.

I haven't listened to this one in a long time until now. Some really solid songs, but a lot of boring as well. Probably rank it closer to a three and a half

Like all of Beck’s output, it has fantastic highs and some average stuff. He is an original though. You do you Becky Beck

Fun ride and some of the Beckiest Beck, I wish we could give these half ratings

Like other Beck albums, I really like his style and sound and a lot of individual songs. But it feels really long and has a lot of things I would skip if I were to listen again. He has such a unique style and sound but the album as a whole isn’t perfect to me. Top Songs: Hotwax, Where It’s At, Ramshackle

I was pretty excited but a little let down on full listen. Very unique but it doesn't all hold up too well. When he's on it is groovy but some of it just sounds like noise. 3.8.

Not my favourite from beck but I like the uniqueness of this album and how it plays with sound and genres

This was pretty good! Lots of experimentation that didn’t always land for me, but I enjoyed it overall. 7/10 Quite Likeable

Often good. Often a bit much.

Needed more washboard solo

There’s a lot of spaghetti on the ground that didn’t stick to the wall.

Significantly better than the Beck album about getting dumped but 3 stars is where Beck will always peak

Pretty creative but also bit annoying. Felt like a beastie boys rip off

This is definetly one of the most eccentric albums out there. And its also a whole piece, I cant really pick just some tracks because this whole album is an experience, combining different genres and fusing tastes together, from rock, country, jazz and electro themes. I really appreciate the creative process

yeah ok

It has been a really long time… Yeah, I remember wanting to like this album more than I did. And that remains the case. I would actually count myself a Beck fan, I generally enjoy his genre mishmash. But this album doesn’t… flow. Just when I start to dig it, it takes a hard right, or left, and enter in the video game noises. It’s Brechtian. I’m not a fan of Brecht’s plays and I can’t say I enjoy this album. None the less, I do appreciate it. So 3 stars. Boolean rating: yes, I suppose I am glad to have heard it again. But maybe not again after this.

Starts off really good but it gradually gets to be weirder and weirder. I did like all of the samples and throwbacks Beck used here, the songs he sampled are very different yet work in this scenario as well. It definitely had it's moments but a number of the songs on here made me really wanna turn it off.

Eh, it's okay.

Second of 3 Beck albums in this experience and I think I may be slowly turning into a Beck fan. I don't like this one as much as I liked Guero. I just didn't think the songs were as good on this one as they were on Guero. Maybe that would have changed if I listened to this one first? Who knows? Still enjoyed it though. 3.5 rounded down to a 3/5

Love how weird this is and so happy it exists. Will I ever relisten to the weirdest, more unpopular tracks of this album? Mmmm, no.

There’s a pretty big handful of Beck songs that I really like, and a couple of them are on this album. This is not my preferred back era, however. For some reason, I never really got into this album, so I’m curious to spend some more time with it. I definitely like the idea of what's going on here, but as a whole I don't see myself revisiting too much.

-truly a "mixed feelings" record for me. The highs are quite high, but there's a lot of stuff that aged poorly, doesn't hit right, or is just too dilettante. -the singles are absolute stand-outs. New Pollution sounds great to me and, even though I've heard it a zillion times, Where It's At is still a surprisingly weird song to have become a moderate radio hit. The best parts of the album are the ones that lean away from all the dabbling and posturing, and instead just try to build a steady psychedelic groove. -as a kid, I wondered how the hell Beck wrote and recorded these songs. As an adult I can't help but hear this as a Dust Brothers album with Beck singing on top. -there's so much stylistic hybridity going on here it feels like Beck is being a self-conscious appropriator, which isn't always as cute as he thinks it is. Beck is a pretty good epitome of postmodernism (derogatory). -there are absolutely some songs on here that sound like Kid Rock.

My only exposure to Beck before this was the Futurama episode... Not really sure what to make of it, very mixed feelings. Firstly, and probably most importantly, I'm not a fan of Beck's vocals. His tone just makes him sound bored, and as a result it also makes me feel bored. The album is absolutely all over the place, it's definitely experimental, and deserves some credit for that aspect, but it's also just totally incoherent and well, just a bit odd? There were definitely moments where I started to get into it, and then it would just descend into some gigantic noisy mess with no redeeming features... Overall, "meh" out of 5, which I'll call a very low 3.

I like experimental music, this is experimental, I'm unimpressed. This feels like experimentation for the sake of being different rather than experimenting to make music do more. Cmon guys this is 10 years after sonic youth and MBV's peak, the bar for experimental music is extremely high and you put out a soft rock album with occasional "noise" that doesn't add anything to each track. The layering is barebones and doesn't lend itself to the immersive feeling I tend to get from experimental music. There were a few moments where it all came together and it was REALLY good but then it falls apart. Like Novacane - woah really good guitar section -> lets play the rest of this song with phone dial beep boop beeep beeep. Low 3

ye ol genre hopper

This was definitely a Beck album. Some of it was great. Some was a bit too experimental for my taste and I didn’t find it super cohesive. Still an ok listen when in the mood. 3.5/5

3/5, started strong but couldn’t hold the attention unfortunately

Some fun and good songs and some that i didn't enjoy alot

I liked this album well enough. I think some of the songs were recognizable for me

never really listened to beck much but i liked it. i don't think i realized how hip hop and sample heavy and eclectic this was. i could see this being a 4 with more familiarity

This is cool and different, and a little strange. I don't really vibe with all of it, but I appreciate the effort. At the end of the day I think it's an okay album. 3.3/5

I appreciate Beck’s creativity and genre bending style, but most of his music doesn’t really hold my attention. There are interesting sonic details in every track, but only a few songs stand out.

Some smart songwriting and brilliant production. Not nothing that really stands - don't quite get the critical acclaim with Beck.

Not nearly as interesting as the other Beck album I listened to but still okay. Good variety of songs and production

Some of Becks greatest

3+ ganz okay

Eh not really my thang

1. Devils Haircut 2. Lord Only Knows 3. High 5 (Rock The Catskills)

Would listen again

Best Song: Where It's At This one is tough. Do I listen to it with my 1996, college aged, all that matters is going to class and partying rose colored glasses or do I compare it to listening to it now, in 2026, with a job and responsibilities and a deep rooted sadness that only age can bring. Music should be timeless so I guess listening to it today, I have to be a little more critical than I would have been in 1996. Some of this still holds up while some of this is just a whole big collection of suck. I will be generous and give a 3/5 just because some of the songs are still pretty good but overall, it's pretty mid if I'm being completely honest.

No me pareció buenísimo, pero me gustó

269/1089 this is such a unique mix of genres that i wasn’t expecting at all. i quite like it but i need to adjust there are some sounds (like the awful squeaking in Where It’s At) that i find off-putting but it’s mostly good production and vocals etc i liked the back half more than the front actually faves: Ramshackle!!, Sissyneck and High 5 66/100

Odelay belongs on this list for its innovation and place in the culture. On the other hand it’s never really connected with me emotionally. I’ve occasionally wondered who this music is for. It’s not a unicorn, but nor is it a vital part of any scene. The best I can offer is it is a reflection of the times.

This album is an easy listen. I don't know how Beck gets away with it. So much confidence for a goofy, skinny white guy. Lots of steady jams here. It's a delight, and sounds like Beck made it just so that people could have something fun to listen to. I could do without "Computer Rock" at the end. Could be two tracks shorter for my taste.

In keeping with tradition, I think this is fine. The best moments—"Devils Haircut," "Jack-Ass," "Where It's At"—stand out, and the rest comes and goes. The pastiche Beck and the Dust Brothers create is fun and pleasant enough to listen to, but not something that'd keep me coming back. 3.5.

Quality, but not my jam.

Yeah, I don't get it. Surprised that this one just doesn't overall really do it for me. I like Beck, I like a good amount of his stuff, and I don't love this album. Oh well. Hopefully Guero's on this too. Still can't say it's a "bad" album, I get it, it just never geled with me like his other stuff.

Minus 100 points for Where it’s At (2 turntables and a microphone). Plus 50 points for High 5

Beck is an immensely talented song writer. However, the manner in which he layers his songs with samples and ideas is both a blessing and a curse. This album was huge in the 90’s and I even went to the concert on this tour. I stopped to listening to Beck a few years after that. This album isn’t timeless. It’s a true 90’s gem that feels like a time capsule. Listing to it now just feels strange. What was once new and refreshing seems so antiquated. Like all great artists Beck has his own sound that was uniquely his. That’s a huge accomplishment.

Decent mixing of genres but mostly mid

Vibed with the instruments (mostly), did not enjoy his voice/singing style.

Approval.

Never understood Beck's popularity because his music is just so bland to me, and this album is no exception.

Turns out I don't like Beck as much as I though I did. It's still alright. Computer rock sound like he heard his printer make a noise and thought it would make a good hook, couldn't quite figure out how to incorporate it but by god was he going to use it

This one is very strange; it's a blend of acoustic with a gajillion weirdo sounds and distortion and samples. This is truly on the line between "neat and novel" and "incomprehensible noise."

A bit of techno, a bit of soul, a bit of white boy rap. I just described this album, and every single Beck album under the sun, I think. Not bad, not great. Good background music and chill beats, but wholly unremarkable. Copy and paste for future Beck albums on this poll...

I like how it changes genre basically every song, but there are some songs that were just testing my patience. There were some very exciting songs, and then there were some very repetitive and boring songs. This album is weird to rank, I like it, but I also dislike it.

The Dust Brothers production is excellent. Unfortunately ill still have Beck's dull voice and dodgy country twangs. 2.5 stars

Fine just didn't enjoy that much

A very solid Beck album but not his finest. It was an album I listened to cover to cover for the first time, though I consider myself well versed in Becks overall catalogue. But, when discovering an album like this, one of my tests is does it hold together as a whole album experience? And for this one, apart from the singles (the excellent devils haircut, where it’s at and to a certain extent the new pollution) I didn’t find a whole lot of material that I would return to for repeat listens. Overall I felt this was the same dj rap over a drum machine and samples rather than incorporate real instrumentation. Also not a great deal of light and shade across the album. But I will say I am comparing it to a very high bar some of his later efforts that contained more conventional instruments and showcased some rich storytelling in his improved songwriting writing. I’m still giving this 3 stars but I would give 5 to his excellent Guero as well as Seachange and Modern Guilt (the latter is not in the 1001 albums but probably ought to be).

Very creative!

Sehr divers. 3.5\5

It's okay the sound is a little too crusty for me but i like the vibe

It’s aged well musical, but Beck’s insistence on using surreal similes gets really wearing after a while

I didn't get this at the time, and I'm still not sure I do. It's ok but it's just a bit dull. Outside of the (iconic) production, are there good songs here? Not really.

Some good bits, some a bit dull.

I remember this album from my middle school days. It always just seemed like a lot of nonsense set to good music, but it was always fun to listen to. I still really like the same tracks I liked before and I had a good time reminiscing.

My friend who is a Beck superfan would probably want me to like it more than I did, buuut even she admitted it's one of his weaker works. I was not amused with the hip hop elements, and the rest was alright. The album wasn't dusturbing in any way and had some nice moments. Overall mid to nice. A beautiful 3.

Wonderfully weird. Interesting mix of genres produced with a range of sounds that Beck called “just a little off.” I really enjoyed most of the songs on this album. According to the book editors, Beck is the poster boy for Generation X, I’m Gen X, so I guess I should like it?

not something would usually gravitate towards, but it was such a refreshing and grungy album that i still would recommend if you are looking for something that will surprise you.

Good start, weird second half. 6/10

good, interesting, not something id listen a lot to but completely strange experience from the previous ones

I recall buying this shortly after it came out, though I don't recall why. It's good, but Beck has better. No way is it an album I must (or even should) listen to before I die. It is a fairly unique sound at least. Not typical of most of the popular music at the time, so props to Beck for that. 3 stars

I liked the blend of genres and use of electronic music and mixing different genres together and I can definitely see how he's been influential, however I've heard better albums that have blended genres together with electronica and the album didnt feel as cohesive as I wished. There were a few songs I did enjoy, like 'Devils haircut' 'Derelict' 'sissyneck' and 'high 5 (rock the Catskills)'

Beck is such a quirky weirdo and the music absolutely reflects that.

Some great songs and a few not great ones

favorites: devil's haircut; hotwax; novocane

weird mix, até interessante.

Meh, not great, not dreadful.

Listening session: march 10th, while commuting to internship Listened to before: no Thoughts: I appreciate the variety on this album but everything sounds a bit too polished for my liking Favourite tracks: Devil’s Haircut & Ramshackle

I’m a casual Beck fan. Seen him live a few times. Have some songs in playlists. But I’ve never listened to a full album. All I can say about Odelay is that it is very “Beck” and I wasn’t taken by the non-single tracks. It was fine but I leaned nothing new.

Not my favorite, definitely original, and I remember the hits, but just nothing that I ever really connected with

It started out alright, but after the random telephone noises it got a bit worse

At first I hated it. Random screaming... Kind of hip-hoppy at times. Then I somehow started to like it. I'm also sick right now (and same for the Cindy Lauper album) so maybe I'm not as receptive to new music now HA! Edit: really grew on me by the end. 2 tracks were removed from spotify..

Liked it, nothing memorable

Beck definitely has a very distinct sound and voice and I do enjoy it. Saved some songs for future listening.

à nouveau : éclectique

To so vsi zanri v enem albumu, moje misli

Third beck on here, I think this is the one most point to as his masterpiece. I like two turntables. This thing is like an obvious alt rock classic but it didn’t do a whole lot for me, especially compared to his other albums. It is a little ruined too by about halfway through, still listening to the album, I tried to pull a dead squirrel out of my dogs mouth to no avail before she swallowed it and then proceeded to fight me when I tried to pick her up (she’s 12 pounds). Dog on the cover is probably nicer.

Album #83 Beck: Odelay My second Beck album on this list, and from what I understand, this is meant to be his masterpiece, yet though I agree this is a more consistent album than ‘Guero’, it doesn’t seem to be in an entirely different league. One thing I admire about Beck is his songwriting; he is definitely one of the most unique songwriters that I’ve ever heard, and he certainly knows how to turn a phrase. He has probably created thousands of unique sentences in his songs that are probably nonsensical, but in context seem somehow poignant. This album’s claim to fame is being the epitome of 90s alternative, combining every fresh new musical wave into one album, from rap to electronic, while also incorporating classics like country and folk. And though in a vacuum each song can certainly sound like it is from a different album entirely, for some reason, when listening to Odelay in one sitting, I never received any whiplash. Every song felt definitively ‘Beck’ to me, almost as if they were doused with the same shade of paint. It wasn’t until I started returning to tracks individually that I began to pick up on all the stylistic changes. I think this problem comes down to the gritty 90s production style, which never gives any track room to breathe and establish itself. That said, though, there is a lot more good to this than bad; practically every track is a good time, and Beck is probably at his best lyrically. I found myself gravitating to the more folksy deep cuts rather than hits like ‘Devil’s Haircut’ and ‘Where It’s At’, which didn’t impress me as much. I leave this album a lot more interested in hearing Beck’s singer-songwriter album “Sea Change”, which I am sure is also on this list. Definitely a classic 90s album, just held back a bit by the production for me. Best Tracks: Ramshackle, Jack-Ass, Hotwax Worst Track: High-5 (Rock The Catskills) Score out of 10: 7

buen disco de rock alternativo

I didn't really pay attention to this album much while listening to it. It is very futuristic and unique sounding which is really interesting and fresh at first. However, this album is almost an hour long and at some point I just feel like I am just listening to a bunch of video game sounds and become fatigued. Will definitely give this album another try and actually listen to it.

Fine album. Never listened to Beck before. I can see why this is such a big but to me it just sounds like 5 different genres smashed together with the occasional tambourine thrown in.

There’s a lot of experimentation and contrast here. It didn’t quite captivate me - it’s a bit too intense for my taste - but I think it’s worth taking a closer look at. 6/10

this is not my job

experimental

Very Experimental, Not horrobile. Coule listen to it once in a while.

It was okay. Maybe not an album I’d go to right away but wouldn’t not suggest it to someone with that vibe.

Devils haircut - love the beat. Lyrics are nonsensical. Sounds like drugs. Very rock n roll Hotwax - love the country influence. Ok Spanish? Harmonica jam. Tech sounds introduced. Kind of a love song to music and being on the off path. Otherworldly outro - like a god influenced the music Lord only knows -lyrics seem nonsensical. It’s like abandoning everything cause you have nothing left? The New Pollution - seems to be a statement about the state of the earth and it complacency. Set to funky sounds that give a spacial sound. I imagine a dystopian setting Derelict - love the use of cadence and sounds. Lots of different sound use together. Novacane - sounds like a mission to space? Digital sounds. This sounds like what I think goes on in a boys brain. A bunch of man words and sounds digital/experimental outro Where it’s at - feel like I’ve heard this on tv shows. Sounds like a 90s sitcom in the beginning. Call and response. Ode to performance and connection through music. Jam session. Is telephone plastic about music turning digital and leaving vinyl behind? Minus - 90s grunge about the world falling apart / towns going to shit / punk Sissyneck - country influence. Romanticizes simplicity. Readymade - feels like the world is falling apart High 5 - experimental - with the guy that said “turn that shit of man” kind of calls out the “noise”. Ramshackle - time changes everything and now everything is gone. But end of the day, we are all human and must act as one

Heel gevarieerd, iets te druk vind ik

It's a good album, with several memorable tracks. Beck's style and musicianship is undeniable, being both unique and familiar. Many of these songs and themes I've heard since the album came out in the 90s, so I am at least familiar with the hits. But it's just not something I find myself longing for. I'll listen to it occasionally, but feel no need to seek it out.

I liked how it sounded well within the sound of that time. I feel like if I heard it when it first dropped and then re-listened now, I’d be transported back to that time. I think that’s a special quality few albums possess.

It’s cool

I haven't given Beck much of a chance. I enjoyed the front half of the album. It had some of the songs I was familiar with. He can be a bit too eclectic for my taste.

fun but nothing special, standort: readymade

90s rock

Need to give it another good listen. Was interrupted throughout my first go around. I recognize the album's significance so my three stars may end up being lower than it deserves after listening again.

There's a couple of great tracks on this but I don't love the album overall.

The entire album sounds like a white non-Hispanic man who barely knows Spanish trying to show off his Spanglish via alternative rap-rock. Somehow, this actually isn't bad. Favorite Track: "Where It's At".

(4/7) some normal stuff, some weird stuff, overall fairly listenable

When it's successful at cross-pollinating genres, there are definitely interesting sounds that emanate from the project, but those moments don't materialize into whole songs, let alone an album. I find it more of a respectable experiment than something I would revisit.

as primeiras músicas são boas, as últimas são ruins

Having loved through the entire 90s and through Beck's (I assume) peak period, I think I've only heard two of his songs. Both were fine, I didn't think much of them and didn't care to learn more. He seemed like the male equivalent of the manic pixie dream girl trope, a walking Wes Anderson archetype. I understand this is generally taken to be his most acclaimed album. We shall see. Wait, three songs! I remembered Loser. That was Beck, right? This is fine. Perfectly fine. Average. A typical slacker vibe, if a little try-hard. A precursor to the hipster movement. Cheesy as hell, to the extent that the entire album feels like that Steve Buscemi fellow kids meme. The songs are fine, dull but funky in that slacker way. Very much an example of chucking every instrument you can find at an empty husk and hoping something viable is constructed. It's a good example of that type of music, but when stripped back you realise how hollow (or non-existent) the underlying song is. Sure, what remains is a song, but there's nothing underneath. You can't take the core and make something better, you can't reduce it to a single instrument and vocalist and have something good. All style, no substance.

Devils Haircut - 4/5 Hotwax - 3/5 Lord Only Knows - 3.5/5 The New Pollution - 3.5/5 Derelict - 3/5 Novacane - 3/5 Jack-Ass - 3.5/5 Where It's At - 3.5/5 Minus - 3.5/5 Sissyneck - 3/5 Readymade - 2.5/5 High 5 (Rock the Catskills) - 2/5 Ramshackle - 4/5 There's a lot here to take in with how varied the production is, but I never feel like it hits in any of those areas. Feels a bit weird to have what feels like a polished-up demo reel as your fifth album but to each their own. Overall: 3/5 Favorites: Devils Haircut, Ramshackle

Increíble

Coming from Sea Change and Morning Phase, Odelay feels like Beck in hyperactive‑collage mode. There’s loads of fun ideas, cool grooves, and flashes of brilliance, but it jumps around so much it never settles into anything emotionally grounding. I enjoyed plenty of moments, but the whole thing felt a bit too disjointed for my tastes. Maybe I just prefer Beck when he’s sad and focused.

beck beck

Very unique, especially for its time. A little repetitive and cheesy IMO. Has some good tracks.

Overall better than I expected. A few of the songs in the second half got a bit too experimental for me. The rest of the album was a good smooth listen.

A few bangers, with others sounding a little dated. Didnt really get into it.

This is a pretty dope alt 90s album honestly. However, it isnt quite my taste as I prefer softer, more emotionally driven music. My favorite songs were Devils Haircut and Ramshackle. Artistically: 4 stars Personally: 3 stars

Andreane said: “Oh that’s from your album thing. It’s so unlike you.” I guess I discovered something new, because I really enjoyed it!

A lot thrown at the wall on this one. When Beck hits, he hits and when he misses...well, he was trying something and usually that something was five different things at once. I feel like Ryan Dombal hit the nail on the head describing Odelay as "the world's most accomplished demo reel".

An intresting experimental album that missed the mark in execution. Intresting and artistic but not amazing.

This record feels experimental and daring, but not really to my taste. I appreciate the risks they took and I think there will be lots of people who thoroughly enjoy this album, I just am not one of them.

An interesting listen, I feel like Beck tried a lot here and I gotta respect the effort and vision, that being said I don't feel like he quite stuck the landing. The mashups between styles often felt a little awkward, which was even further exacerbated by the quite poor vocals. Some instrumental parts were actually pretty good, but did not have enough going on to carry an entire song often. All in all I can't say it was bad, but neither can I say I loved it. Maybe I would after a couple of listens but that doesn't really sound attractive to me 5.5/10
