Not my personal favourite Beck album, but definitely my favourite Beck album artwork. When I was discovering his music as a teenager I bought Odelay on CD and, harsh critic that I was back then, was slightly underwhelmed. Nowadays I’m more amenable and instead of wondering why it doesn’t play out like a greatest hits album I just hear a string of enjoyably groovy, oddball tunes that are strangely cohesive despite containing a pick ’n’ mix collage of disparate sounds. Still, it could probably be improved by inserting Ramshackle after the first 10 tracks and ending matters there, before it starts to drag.
Beck is all nostalgia for me. Great album
This was such a good week of albums! Really enjoyed this and added four tracks to my faves playlist.
Enjoyed this a lot. A couple of tracks didn’t do it for me but overall a winner. Didn’t realize he played almost all the instruments.
Wow, this was way better then I expected! I now have an appreciation for Neil young, who I had always avoided in the past!
Although it doesn't have some of his most well-known music, I think this album shows a lot of the clever, innovative approach to music that Beck often displays (hit or miss sometimes!).
There are so many different sounds on here. Beck is able to pull together break beats, grunge, harmonicas -- whatever he wants. Really cool how he can just play and it works.
Innovative and time tested. Good and interesting listen. Obvious hits and nostalgia here…
It’s interesting revisiting this album that incredibly is almost 30 years old. And yet if made today I’m convinced would fit right in line with the current music industry. Most likely because Beck has an incredible knack for fusing many genres into one unique style that in some respects cannot be defined or pigeonholed, and yet at the same time remains familiar. Throw in his quirky lyrics and tasteful production and you get really good records. A well deserved 4-spot most likely as I’m holding out hope for more Beck releases that I prefer that much more such as Sea Changes or Morning Phase.
Nice to revisit this after 19 years since Devils Haircut and New Pollution were so overplayed that it prob took me 19 years before I could listen to them again. Overall an excellent album with a lot of creativity while still being accessible and enjoyable.
Middle school nostalgia bomb! It’s interesting revisiting this album now considering the direction his career has taken. Who woulda thunk he’d win a best album Grammy 20 years later for Morning Phase? A fun listen. A good album. But ultimately not great. And admittedly the nostalgia factor is what’s pushing it to 4* land for me. 3.75/5
…in which young rascal Beck Hansen gives folk/pop/rock/hip-hop/country a swaggering, slack-jawed, sampledelic, quintessentially ‘90s make-over. In its brightest spots, “Odelay” is a toybox: idea after idea bouncing over each other, full of flashing lights and fun. My ultimate highlight is the album’s peerless first track, “Devil’s Haircut”. Without warning, a monstrous three-note guitar riff roars itself into existence. “Something’s wrong, cause my mind is fading” declares Beck, oozing a strange and skewed confidence. And we’re away. The songs here are hyperactive and restless, rarely staying in the same place for more than a few seconds. There’s a raga solo out of nowhere in “Derelict”, a brief flash of accordion in “Hotwax”, and confounding false starts to “Lord Only Knows” and “The New Pollution”. In the words of Dust Brother and producer Mike Simpson, “the ultimate goal was to end up with something designed for someone with Attention Deficit Disorder”. Mission accomplished. When I first read about the depth of sampling (i.e: the brilliant “Jack-Ass” is actually a loop of Van Morrison’s 60’s outfit Them covering Dylan), I was disappointed: “I thought Beck had crafted everything from scratch, how lazy can someone be?!” I now appreciate the churlishness of this perspective. The sampling in Odelay is relentlessly innovative, coming from a dusty old record collection dug out from second-hand shops. There are multiple records so niche that nobody has been able to verify their source. Elsewhere, Hansen betrays his other influences with his best Stephen Malkmus impression in “Lord Only Knows” and “Readymade” (it totally works). Even the forays into hip-hop feel endearing and enthusiastic, rather than cringey: “High 5 (Rock the Catskills)” dives completely into scratching and winds up sounding lovably retro. Most artists spend careers aspiring to be so playful or earnest. The biggest flaw in “Odelay” is that there’s little emotional depth here: revelling in the art of play can be a lot of fun, but also risks winding up as a shallow exercise. It also means that tracks like “Ramshackle” come across a little dull and dreary, draining the album of momentum without being compelling enough as ballads. On the whole, though, this is a very endearing, exciting experience. Beck’s reputation has endured very well since, but “Odelay” was exactly what he needed to get him on the way.
Awesome album. Love Devil's Haircut and Where It's At, fun to jam out with.
not the Beck album i wouldve chosen for the list(Guero) but an interesting listen nonetheless
Beck's best album. Slacker rock at its finest.
I was not a fan of Beck when he burst onto the scene in the '90s. But there were several bands that I was not a fan of back then... Listening to it today, I really found myself having a very enjoyable time, and paying more close attention to the influences which shaped Beck's sound: the funk, the rock, the sampling, the groove, the multi-culturist aspect. Am I a Beck fan today? No. But, I know I will listen to this album with a lot more frequency than I've listened to it before... Odaley, cabron!
Poppy, funky, eclectic Beck
Full disclosure: I am a fan of Beck. This album, but Midnight Vultures even more, was a part of my twenties. I was a little late to the Odelay party (shoutout to Hotwax!) due to a hip hop obsession at the time, but on time for MV. Beck's creativity both lyrically and musically are intriguing enough for him to stand out. Not always aestheticly pleasing, but always stimulating. The singles carry this album, but the rest is pleasant enough to warrant a 4.
When it was released did not like it. Several years later re-listen and acknowledge greatness of this album
Kinda went in this ready to hate on it for somreason but nah it's a pretty great album. An all over the place (mostly for the best), good, fun album that really epitomizes what made the 90s alt scene weird, cool, and a littleeeee lame (mostly endearingly) at times. Also somehow never realized the cover was a dog until now. 7, would be an 8 if beck rapping didnt rly annoy me lol
Surprisingly good
I was thinking of giving this a 3 but the second half really saved it for me. It feels very experimental and while it doesn't always work, it makes for a very unique experience and some great ideas. My favorites were sissyneck and Where it's at.
This album is really good. I appreciate all the experimentation and different styles used. Not sure I would call this “folk” but it doesn’t matter. Favorite songs were Devils Haircut, The New Pollution, Jack-Ass, Where It’s At, and Readymade.
A great album with great experimentation. Strangely nostalgic.
Aw Kryst. We’ve all tried to be something better. There have been moments of confusion, detours, off ramps that became weird winding interstates of their own. Sure we have. All of us. And it sounds exactly like we want it to sound, huh? Probably not, actually. It sounds almost exactly like this album, like something you thought it should sound like if it sounded like it should sound like. Perfectly named if you’re the white guy walking consciously slowly somewhere in Southern California.
One of a kind, very creative, at times irritating though. 4.2
Good, but not quite enough for 5 stars.
Artsy, weird and all around good time.
One of my favorite albums that I didn’t know the band.
that was good break
Ramshackle, Hot wax and Jack-ass take the cake. High 5 is equal parts 'I wanna run through a fucking wall rn' and annoying as shit. I wonder if the computer from Fitter Happier listens to Computer Rock ever
Wore this one out when it was fresh. It still holds up.
Great Beck album probably my favorite of his.
Sounds good through headphones. Not bad at all. A bit Eels. A bit lots of things. Like a junkyard of sounds. Nails and bits and bobs shaken up in a tin. I mean this in a good way! Odd bits of this and that joined together to form a colourful, Wacky Races type vehicle of music. Funny and unexpectedly sharp in places, soft and deep in others. I enjoyed it more than I thought I would, Lord Only Knows. Will be listening again.
BEEEECKK!!!! I
Can't say that there are any real bangers on here but the music is interesting and I enjoyed it.
Pretty good Beck album. Some great hit songs and some other less popular but still great songs. His style is very interesting and for some reason that I can't articulate, I like it. I'm sure I will listen to this one again.
A very surprising high 4 from me! Excited to keep revisiting this. Every time I listen to Beck, I realize the guy is super interesting and talented. So many fun influences on this album, just a real pleasure to listen to.
Really experimental, all over the place. Enjoyable and at times grating. Probably good for Beck's fans. Fine for me.
This album sits in that weird place in musical history where you could get more "experimental" music in the radio. I'm not sure "devils haircut" would have been popular at any other time. "New pollution" and "where it's at" were also singles off this album that probably would be considered too wierd at any other time. The guitar effects, voice effects, the sheer amount of instruments on each track its not what "pop" music normally is. Overall great example of mid-90s music
I have so much respect for Beck. Very creative and unique, just grinding it out. Fun album Odelay turned out to be.
I remember my sister buying this album when I was younger. I didn't really get the music but it impacted me somehow. I really loved Where its at then and just seemed different but cool. I get the music now and he is so different and is who he is. It's unique and different and for that he gets props. I love that even if he doesn't get the credit he deserves he just silently keeps going and making his music.
Beck is a masterful musician, playing almost all the instruments and doing production as well. “Odelay,” an alternative rock album, is critically acclaimed for musical creativity and general artistry.
Already listened
Fresh and weird.
Classic fun and Beck's got all kinds of energy on this one.
Listened Before? Y Probably Beck's best work, this album is pretty good cover-to-cover. It was five cuts deep for him spawning several hits and garnered him big critical acclaim. My personal favorites are some of the deeper cuts. Added to Library? N Songs added to playlist: Lord Only Knows
odelay-ee-oo
A good record with some very cool ideas. But somehow it’s still not perfect for me. Unfortunately I can’t name what’s bothering me here.
Solid entry, prefer some of Beck's other albums over this one, but still good stuff.
First time hearing. Good listen
Fantastic album minus the song with the odd dial tones in it .
Devils Haircut hitssss oml (ends a little loud tho) Hotwax FUNKY SOUND <333 Lord Only Knows 10/10 dude its giving Car Seat Headrest going back to houston do the hotdog dance damn every song in this thing hits wtf nv Derelict is just aight Novacane guitar >>>> Novacane ending <<<<< where its at is also meh sissyneck opening>>> Readymade beat is rlly nice High 5 is like if ICP and Gorillaz had a child
Incredibly alternative record with creative sounds. Favorite tracks_ - Jack-Ass, Where It's At, Devil's Haircut, Derelict.
Gibberish never sounded so good.
I was going to give it a 3 but then one of the songs had laser noises so Two turntables and a microphone
Always great songs from this artist.
Yeah this album is pretty fun. Different vibes from another on this list. Definitely more of an upbeat hip hoppy pop rock style. I thought it was pretty fun and listened to a couple times.
Very good album. Hard to define Beck’s weird vibe, but there is definitely a time and place to chill to it.
Classic 90s alt-rock/alt-folk album. Plenty of solid tracks on here.
Great!
Appreciate this even more now than back in the day….
Four
I finally figured out what "odelay" is. Odelay is that feeling when you've written your will on the only piece of paper you could find, which happened to be a three-dollar bill, you try to do the hot-dog dance with a paper bag on your head, but all you can think about is having one last cigarette, but you don't how you're going to hold it when you've only got one finger and it's pointing at the noose hanging over the door, a hemp knot beckoning you to fallow fields where your bankrupt corpse will be laid, but then you're not sure if you can trust that promise when, with your last dying moment of consciousness, you hear a donkey braying outside your window.
Vintage, classic Beck and at least one of the best of his career. Devil’s Haircut and Where It’s At are classic 90’s tracks. Lord Only Knows is a very good tune as well.
Classic album. It’s definitely Beck’s peak cultural relevance so very worth having here. Surprisingly out there for such a popular album too.
Becks follow up to Mellow Gold imo not as great but still great, you know. Actually I think it's better nevermind. Is Guero better than this do I have to listen to Guero again?
You know, Beck is more diverse than I initially gave him credit for. Sea Change was the second album I ever recieved from this list, and the first I rated a 5/5. It's super chill and dreamy, and since it was the only Beck album I was familiar with until today, I thought that's all he did. But wow, this really changes the pace and I love it. There are some moments that are bordering on metal and hip hop, and even blended with the overall folk rock sound of this album, it still sounds amazing.
SOY UN BECK FAN 🤪🤪 devils haircut, hot wax, where it's at
An interesting mix of hip-hop-like sampling courtesy of the Dust Brothers on a few tracks (e.g. the opener and Hotwax) along with taking cues from various subgenres of rock such as folk, country, punk, and grunge makes for an album that sonically is kind of all over the place and some of these attempts are somewhat abrupt or weak at some points, but somehow manages to be a consistently great experience due to Beck's versatility at tackling these different genres as a multi-instrumentalist (seriously check the personnel notes to look at how many instruments he plays on this lol).
Bizarre and a bit nonsense at times but truly unique and risk taking. Deserves some a close listen as even some of the simpler seeming songs genre bend in both subtle and blatant ways. Off the beaten path for sure but worth the trip.
I thought it was pretty awesome I kind of clicked with me
Coherent sound throughout, songwriting is a but repetitive, slightly preferred it to the other Beck album I've had
There is a 2000s sheen im not crazy about, but this album does a lot of cool things. Weird, interesting, but not legendary
Another anthem of my generation A great unique sound that stood out then, and still does today.
One of the great albums from the Everything Alternative Is Signed To A Major Label movement.
Nice. Some good sound5
Iconic cover
The first few songs are great. Slacker Rock + Fatboy Slim. The drums and bass lines are heavy. The song lyrics all sound kinda suicidal, but the melody is poppy and fun. I'm reminded of what David Byrne said about Talking Heads lyrics, they don't make actual sense, they make emotional sense. I think Beck should cut his songs down to 3 mins or so, after that there's not much to be gained.
really weird but I kinda like it?
90's alternative rock. Beck jumps around a variety of genres here, notably hip-hop and grunge, but restrained, melodic versions of them. I liked this album after really only having heard Where It's At before. The music is catchy with clever lyrics and the scope of the record is nothing if not ambitious and experimental. Definitely an album you can get more from with successive listens. Best tracks are Where It's At, Devil's Haircut, Lord Only Knows and Sissyneck.
Oh.. yeah... the shaggy dog album. Good stuff.
Always like Beck but I felt that some of the songs dragged on way longer than they should. I think he has better albums than this
Hey, a good album, quirky lyrics, some interesting musical choices, few instances of scream by Beck, really solid effort. I think I wouldn't be a fan of any particular song when listened to in the vacuum, but altogether Beck created a nice atmosphere and introduced a specific atyle, so that the overall effect is better as a full album. Very good, but not exceptional.
Super cool
It was ok all those years ago and its still ok.
Beck going from country, to hip hop, to nu-metal, to grunge, to folk is obviously enjoyable as heck, albeit slightly dizzying.
A classic
As it has always been, a great album. Haven't listened to the whole thing all the way through in quite a while.
A lot like Frank Zappa
Love Beck, 4/5
Nonsense lyrics, but a fun album
TIL Beck is not Moby
Hard to say if the world was ready for this insanely quality blend of genres when it arrived in 96', but here in the year of our lord 2024, I can say with confidence, it still holds up. This record rules. While it's not Beck's best, it solidified his place in reshaping the way we defined genre.
Even in the midst of considerable stylistic diversity, Beck maintains a singular musical identity that is unmistakably his own.
Yeah it’s eclectic and a bit kooky but, for me, it works. Love the cover too
pleasantly all over the place - not everything lands but enough does to make it not be a fluke
Is this album really cohesive? Well, no. Is this Becks best album? No. Is this my favorite Beck album? Also, no, but I still really enjoy this album. It’s hits that nostalgic for my youth feeling in my middle aged heart.
Sort of have a harder time w Beck these days but this is still a classic.
Good
After I watched "A Life Less Ordinary" in the cinema, I went to buy the CD with the soundtrack. That's how I learned about Beck. I liked Beck's "Deadweight" and the other music, but actually never listened deliberately to any other music by Beck. I should have done. It's great alternative rock. And it's experimental to exactly the degree I like.
Unique for sure. I read the bio on album I thought it was very interesting. Famous producer told him not to release it! At the time he sunk all of his money into it. Most of the time follow your gut!
Pure nostalgia. Love this album.
aprieta mucho abarca poco. 3,8/5
It doesn't all work for me, but there's a lot of great stuff here.
Album 300 of 1001 Beck - Odelay Rating : 4 / 5 Favorite Track : The New Pollution / Where It's At I bought this cd right after he won the grammys for it back in mid-90s. I think I listened once and it has been sitting in my cd case since. I should have listened to it more, as it was a good purchase. I enjoy this album. Some say he should have picked a genre and stuck with it throughout the album. I like the variety. Good stuff.
Pretty slick. I’m having high school flashbacks. Always wondered why new pollution was a not fan favorite but pretty cool memory lane album
Curious and intriguing, makes for active listening
Broke onto the late 90’s scene, with a great new and unique sound. Love his music.
Always loved this album. Ramshackle is my favourite track. Where it's At, New Pollution and Devil's Haircut all great. If the whole album was this quality would get 5 stars from me. The overdistorted sounds, vocals and noise for the sake of noise on some of the other tracks brings this album down to 7/10 for me.
God
tem umas música mt daora, mas só não dou 5 pq acho as partes experimentais pretensiosas demais sei lá
This dude skirts a fine line between a bop and a migraine sometimes. But fuck me if he ain't cool as a cucumber.
My jam! Simple enough and a great vibe
It’s weird. It’s creative. It’s Beck. I loved it. Will listen again.
Reminds me of gorillaz actually. Enjoyed
Not my favorite Beck album, but it’s still an innovative experience and lots of fun.
Great album with nostalgic memories of some of these songs coming on in a club and dancing while singing along.
I can finally see what all the fuss is about. What a great career resurgence. Great to see Jeff Beck do something so forward thinking. Excellent. 4.1
10th Jan 2024
After getting a drum and bass album yesterday where all the tracks sounded the same I love how varied this one was. My fav tracks were Derelict, Jack-ass, and Readymade
A classic 90's angst album that resonates with the rebellious youth in all of us. The tracks show a broad range of experimentation with fusing elements of rap, electro, grunge, and punk into a post-modern marvel that will satisfy almost every listener a little.
An interesting listen with a futuristic sound. Breakbeat and hip hop drums. Borrowing from all genres to create a unique merge. Occasionally misses the mark but overall solid listen.
very impressed about how diverse this album is and still sounding good in any genre
This has some serious nostalgia vibes, came out when I was the perfect target audience for this as a white suburban kid in grade 10. Think it’s aged pretty well, it’s kind of strange music to be honest, I feel like at the time there was better underground music in the same vain. But Beck earned the spot from his previous album smashing it. 4 stars
An album that takes a ton of swings. The best parts are fantastic but it’s an uneven effort. Nevertheless, this will always be an album that I have a soft spot for and don’t mind skipping through the weak tracks.
Close second to Guero for my favorite Beck album, and certainly the most interesting and innovative. It is abrasive and highly experimental, so could take some time to get used to, and a hit-or-miss for many, but I'm absolutely in love with it. Produced by the Dust Brothers, who worked on Paul's Boutique by the Beastie Boys, one of the craziest hip hop records, and they bring that energy and over-stimulation here. Devil's Haircut: a strong dissonant opener with eery country-style singing and random sound effects; establishes the mood of the record while still having a consistent groove and an awesome hardcore ending Hotwax: a parody country song with cool electronic effects, hip-hop beats, and strong raps; great electronic bridge and otherworldly jazzy closer (uses that bongo sample) Lord Only Knows: catchy alt country with memorable chorus and nostalgic guitar; reminds me of Wilco The New Pollution: memorable and catchy indie rock hit; samples are incorporated smoothly in this track Derelict: raga-influenced with nice double-tracked vocals; highly abrasive and messy but entrancing Novacane: country-infused hip-hop with intense vocals, reminds me of Beastie Boys; the messiest and gets really hard to listen to in the second half, but fun nevertheless Jack-Ass: a peaceful alt country catchy track, also reminds me of Wilco; really simple and only gets dissonant in the last minute, which feels fitting Where It's At: an infectious country hip-hop track with crazy samples thrown all over the place; the most memorable but also a bit hard to listen to, and ends a bit oddly Minus: unlike anything on this record, it's a garage noise rock track like Sonic Youth; pretty decent song and a nice break but a bit of an outcast Sissyneck: mostly normal alt country with a catchy chorus but otherwise not much to say Readymade: a mix of country and psychedelia; featuring weird sound effects; decent but again not much to say High 5: abrasive hip-hop, probably the messiest song on the record Ramshackle: a drawn-out peaceful ending; a fairly normal acoustic folk track with some mild dissonance My major beef is that I do feel the quality does take a dip following "Where It's At". They feel more like incomplete ideas that could be expanded upon. "High 5" is out-of-place, coming off really abrasive and rough in between chiller tracks, which is really off-putting at the end. And with a record length of 52 minutes, it does get a bit exhausting at that point. I do think most of this album is among one of the most innovative and impressive that the 90s has to offer, and Beck really displays his talent here. Weaknesses aside, I do consider this to be an essential record, and one that I will revisit from time to time, but I might just cut it at "Where It's At".
So satanic! Love it
Beck can do it all. Album sounds amazing almost 30 years later dimpym due to its originality and Becks unique voice and style.
Listened to it several times back in the day, it's been a long time. The runtime is a tad bit longer than it needs to be, but still great album. 4.5
Manchmal ein bisschen zu experimentell. Aber alles in allem gut.
erst etwas country mäßig, aber dann doch ganz nett, sample artig / repetitiv? ccr? velvet underground / eels stimme? insgesamt ganz brauchbar
endlessly creative project. Beck in general is so impressive in how he presents fresh ideas with every album, yet always seems so cool and himself. A goat TBH.
If I were rating solely on importance and influence this would get a 5. On its own merits it gets a 4 for me. Some of the noise is just a bit too much. But this is something everyone should listen to and the hits are excellent. Really like Lord Only Knows. Where It’s At is a classic.
This is one of my favorite albums from childhood my teen years. I always liked Becks weird lyrics and unique sounding style of rock
I really like this album. He’s able to blend multiple genres really well. I don’t even mind the electronic parts.
Really solid album. I favorited at least 4 songs. Another example of an album I’ve never listened to in its entirety but heard multiple iconic songs countless times.
A quintessential 90’s album: detached, ironic, eclectic. Beck obviously listened a lot to beastie boys and Bob Dylan. Pauls Boutique is one of my favourite albums so as Beck brought in the Dust Brothers for this, of course I like it even if it’s a bit derivative. It doesn’t have the trailblazing feel and energizing rap-interaction of the beastie boys or the lyrical depth of Dylan, but it’s not cat shit either.
Holds up!
Another album that was so much more than I was expecting. I had heard a few Beck tracks before but had never really enjoyed them. I'm not entirely sure why because I thought this album was really good. So many influences that it's difficult to put a label on the genre - some rock, some pop, some soul, some blues etc.
I remember the first time hearing this album and I got Where It's At stuck in my head for about a week. And it happened again and im sure it'll be there for another. Thanks project.
That cover alone gets 5. How cute is that dog? The singles are great and the rest is pretty good too. Not difficult in any way to listen to although I’ll forget most of it in an hour. Solid 3.5.
I love this album so very much that I can overlook Beck's Scientology background. But good news---I don't even have to overlook anything because in 2019 Beck claimed, "I'm not a Scientologist, I don't have any connection or affiliation with it." That's where it's at!
ok han nur loser vo ihm kennt sehr starche ahfang mit devil's haircut lieb de bass wo immer wieder s lied schön zemmehebt mengisch sehr countrytime, zB sissyneck mega vill sache innepackt, rock, rap, immer wieder sochli lo-fi moment, und denn chunnt mengisch plötzlich wieder e verzerrti gitarre hinnefüre musig wo iwie "cool" isch? ich lieb ramshackle sehrsehr fest WTF DISKOBOX KEIN GRUND SO LOS Z GAH WELLE GLEIS??? absolut geile kontrast zwüsche de salonmusig und sim schreie mengisch au sehr kreativi beats, derelict gaht ham
Rappin' Pavement, pretty good. Alt rock with some great guitar sounds, genre-bending songs, warbly off kilter vocal delivery and a very practiced looseness. I both hated this and was intrigued by it when I was like 11 - I always listened closely to figure out why I didn't like it, until I started to actually really like it. One of the the best iterations of the eclictally ironic but earnest postmodern gen-X spirit.
Very experimental and most of it works. Very solid album. Not all of the experiments work but most of them do and I will revisit this album. Good addition to the book.
yeah decent, not bad
88/100
8/10, gentle mood old rock love the drums
The lyrics are mostly random bullshit and it's great artistic expression. The personality of Beck shines through as a laid back loser and it really does sound like it was made by a guy who did way too many drugs and just created an image for himself. Really good and unique. Im Jammin this was a good album.
Futurama reminisce pushing it up to 4 for me!
Coming in hot w the first two tracks, really liked them, the outro on Novacane is the most 90s thing I’ve ever heard. Definitely can see what the apple music summary was saying about the pastiche of styles. And then High 5 is such a vibe shift. Really, the jump from High 5 to Ramshackle to Computer Rock is crazy. Nice parallel between Computer Rock and the Novacane outro tho.
A bit abstract compared to what I normally listen too but it was a pretty relaxed beat. 4/5
I like Beck as an artist—I like that he’s always evolving and experimenting with sounds. I like that for this album, he came in with his acoustic guitar songs and worked with hip hop producers to create this genre-kaleidoscope of an album. Yet it always sounds like a Beck album, perhaps as it’s always paired with his Gen-X apathy. There’s something admirable about creating an album that is intentionally strange and jarring and still managing to make it a hit. “Computer Rock” is one of the most bizarre ways I’ve ever heard an album end. And yet, it works for this album (and probably wouldn’t for most others).
Really quirky. Enjoyed it. Not necessarily my favourite but its modern sounds blended with alternative forms of rhythm and structure made me really appreciate its quality.
fed! beck er en ret consistent 4/5 kunstner for mig. noget af det lyder meget som beastie boys
This has aged really well over the 30 years (omg) that it's been out.
This album grew on me and most of the tracks are fun and the blend of genres is very unique and unlike I had heard anywhere else. I was expecting jt to be more or less straightforward well done indie rock but the sounds on here were really a surprise. However, after a few listens I started really appreciating how these come together. The lyrics aren’t that great on some tracks but the production I guess makes up for it. It’s a light 4.
I really enjoyed this. I haven't ever listened to Beck, but will now explore his work more.
Have always really enjoyed this album. Some of the songs are just a little too strange and don’t really flow well with the rest of the album. But there are some absolutely great songs here. 4/5 Will listen again.
Damn guess I like Beck
Definitely my favorite Beck project, I enjoyed this FAR more than I thought I would. The genre bending is done incredibly well, and there's such an energy behind the hiphop/rock/electronic mixes that borders on a pre-Daft Punk or Justice sound. Loved it. Favorite track: Novacane
Some great tracks and an overall staple to the Beck legacy.
Not at all what I was expecting but I liked it a lot
Always a pleasure. Immense talent.
Nick is scared of Beck but I really like him. The way he can bend genres has always been intriguing to me. It really shows in Hotwax. Derelict is spooky! Where It's At is such a jam. Have never heard High 5 but loving it. Makes me want to Rock the Catskills. Had this on in the background but Beck makes some awesome shit. This is about as close to a 5 without actually getting one as possible. Might get one on a revisit from me. I hope we get some more Beck albums
👍
The 90s encapsulated in an album, doesn't make much sense but damnit it's catchy.
1996: Remembering high school
4/5 banger so good I didn’t like the newer album loved this one.
3.5 rounding up since I rounded the last Beck down
What a decade. Enjoyed this.
Amazing first half, but trails off into average in the second half.
Like weird 60s psych stuff or wild electronic randomness. Some classics in there but I feel like I like it less on this relisten.
goddamn Beck is good. Why don't I listen to him some more??
Cool album. Might be more inclined for a re listen if I did drugs.
3rd listen (2, 4) Beck 1997 Took me a while to get into this one. Now, I'm lovin' it. Standouts: Where It's At, Devil's Haircut, The New Pollution, Jack-Ass, Sissyneck Others: Hotwax, Derelict 4/5
‘Odelay’ hangs together quite well. Beck goes folk, country, rock, grunge, lounge and exotica and the Dust Brothers add beats and production, complementing the album perfectly without ever overpowering proceedings. The Dust Brothers and Beck…what a combo…who knew?
Eclectic sounds fused with familiar grooves. a taste of the future and past. A fun ride.
Very good
its ok for backgroud noise
Countrified hipster funk from the mad folky and the dust brothers.
This album is like candy for your ears.
Pretty darned cool set of tracks. Like what all he put together and added his own touches to.
Rock alternativo. Está bien. Un 4.
Top tier heist movie music. He's got his own sound and tends to lean a little more on the poppy side of the fence although there's some old school hip hop and rock riffs mixed in. I think Beck hits that balance pretty well which keeps the whole album pretty fresh and exciting
Derelict est très bien, Novocane aussi. Globalement je connais peu Beck mais j'aime bien.
jaunty
Lovely indie album, memories of festivals past
Excellent
This is so 90s in the best possible way
Good listen. Not in my top 50
Wonderful unique LP
Great! Sorta eclectic but I can see how its groundbreaking
Great album from the 90's. Beck is quirky and fun. The album is entertaining. Nostalgia of MTV.
Haven't really listened to this album since 1996. Great listen. For the uninitiated, Beck is a mix of cool alt, rock and soul with a little country influence sprinkled in.
I don't really know how I feel about this other than a whole album of Beck feels like a lot to take in. There's just... so much quirk. It's quirkful. Quirkbundant. Just... absolutely stuffed to bursting with quirk. At the end of the day, I guess I enjoyed it more than I was put off by the quirkiness? It's a 4, I suppose. But it's a soft 4.
Always wrote Beck off as being boring dad-rock, but he's made something really out-there with this album. Will deffo come back to it
some very good songs sprinkled in + all in my playlist however there are some moments in songs that dont need to be there but still a good album
Great album! Beck is so creative and it comes through on every track.
Strange music. So catchy.
The eclectic sonic palate of Beck’s Odelay makes this a one-of-a-kind listen that anyone could find something they’d enjoy inside. A great album that symbolizes the diversity of sounds the ‘90s offered.
note to self: pass along this record to boyfriend
Really enjoyed this! knew about half the Songs, either because of Radio or being played in social situations. Was worried 50 minutes would be a little long, but it held my attention well.
Fuller realized version of Mellow Gold. Varied, fun, and creative.
It's okay. I'd listen to it again probably
Just a weird good time, very late 90s Beck.
Favourite tracks: devils haircut; where it's at; new pollution
Some great songs, started to feel a little repetitive. Realized I had no idea what Beck's music sounds like.
An interesting and eclectic collection. I generally liked the mellower numbers the best, in particular Novocane
Pretty ok
The Dust Brothers really gave Beck the platform to properly express some of the ideas he had in his head. I've had this album in my collection since it came out and have always enjoyed it. Now relistening to it, I find the fun that this album exhumes very catchy. It makes me happy. Not all songs are amazing, and it might not be a masterpiece in music history, but it sure as hell is a great album for any collection.
infectious beats interspersed with distorted guitars and beck’s signature weirdness. he makes that quirkiness seem effortlessly cool. so good. highlights: “devil’s haircut”, “hotwax”, “where it’s at”…
Yeah, this is a pretty cherry album. Odelay indeed.
I had this album growing up and I forgot just how good it was.
Uniformly excellent work by the weird little dude
Damn, that Scientologist sure can rock! Great album. "Sissyneck" and "High 5" are highlights.
Cool guy and cool album
Oof, how do I feel about this one. Loved it at the time, and hearing more or less anything on it evokes memories of his band mates horses head mask's manes blowing in the summer breeze across the stage. But oof, it's dated hard, hasn't it? A lot of it is Beck does Big-beat, he's got two turntables and a microphone, which again I loved at the time but man that sound has dated. The more timeless stuff makes less use of this sound and have remained my favourites over the years, Lord Only Knows and the wonderful Jack-Ass. I think I might prefer that to the Them song it samples, wonderfully. I still enjoy the magpieing from all sorts that's going on here generally. There's a lot of Beastie Boys going on, with judicious use of samples in a similar vein. I keep thinking of a Tarantino soundtrack, and that's not helping with the whole 'dated' vibe. Diskobox is still cool though. Why is that not on the 'Deluxe' version? So yeah, played it to death on release, still enjoy a track or two when I hear them, but the album as a whole sounds sort of cringe now, and that's why I'm surprising myself and not giving it a 5.
Really great 90’s alt album. Beck has some really fun hits.
listened
Good vibes
Groovy
I had no idea what was on the album cover until I’d seen it 50X. Lots of hits with that classic Beck variety of sound.
Really liked this!!! Giving that classic “loser” beck sound with some maturity. Thought this sounded great.
Pretty good. I loved how unafraid it was to throw some very experimental sounds and breakdowns into each track, despite the vibe of the rest of it. It's not necessarily that album that you can just throw on whenever, but it executes what it means to quite well. Feels like a less tame version of what bands like Wilco would go on to do with their turn-of-the-millennium work. Favorite tracks initially were Hot Wax and Where It's At, among others.
this is a GREAT album but I think barely not a 5. Some of the 'aesthetic' feels too dated (90s) to me. But it's def fantastic and an easy 4. Oh man right from the first note though - it’s such a beautiful mash up of live/real guitars and drum machine and samples and noise… Like the beat in the chorus of Devils Haircut is the Amen Break right? Such an innovative record.
What an intriguing album, always been on my "To Listen to" list but finally getting around to it. It's great, Where it's at and Minus were highlights for me.
Very cool record! I really liked it. Beck is more interesting than I thought
Some absolutely great tracks... and a few that are much less so. Could lose some tracks for a shorter, more focused album.
Still sounds mostly great. Some bangers in there. Wee bit 'of its time' in places. Have you watched a 90s Tarantino movie recently?
Great album, plenty of variation, some good songs and fuses styles.
Yo soy un disco quebrado Yo tengo un chicle en el cerebro 8+/10
4.3 + I mostly love this rummage through the dankest parts of Beck's musical mind. Especially the whacked-out country-western fuzz rock on "Lord Only Knows" that takes some chaotic detours before ending in a strange hoe-down. "Hotwax" is also fun insanity, as well as the "good-ol' boy" ditty "Sissyneck." But, I don't love everything on here - "The New Pollution" can grate on my nerves and I usually skip "Minus" and "Readymade."
"Odelay" by Beck is an album that defies easy categorization. It's a mishmash of different styles and genres, blending elements of rock, hip hop, folk, and electronic music to create a sound that's uniquely Beck. Overall, I would give the album a solid 4 out of 5 rating. One of the strengths of "Odelay" is Beck's ability to blend seemingly disparate elements into a cohesive whole. Tracks like "Devils Haircut" and "The New Pollution" are built on funky guitar riffs and catchy beats, while "Jack-Ass" and "Sissyneck" have a more laid-back, country-tinged vibe. Throughout it all, Beck's distinctive vocals tie everything together. The production on the album is top-notch, with Beck working with a team of talented musicians and producers to create a sound that's both polished and raw. The album is full of interesting sonic textures, with elements like scratchy vinyl samples and distorted guitar riffs adding depth and complexity to the songs. Lyrically, "Odelay" is a bit of a mixed bag. Some of the tracks, like "The New Pollution" and "Where It's At," are full of clever wordplay and cultural references, while others are more straightforward. However, even the more simplistic lyrics are delivered with enough energy and conviction to keep things interesting. If I had to nitpick, I would say that there are a few tracks on the album that don't quite measure up to the rest. "High 5 (Rock the Catskills)" and "Readymade" are both decent songs, but they lack the same spark of some of the album's other tracks. Overall, "Odelay" is a fantastic album that showcases Beck's unique talents as a songwriter, musician, and producer. Its eclectic mix of styles and sounds make it a true standout in the world of '90s alternative music. If you're a fan of Beck or just looking for something a bit different, "Odelay" is definitely worth a listen.
Beck is such a word-saying guy. He's absolutely obsessed with saying words. Every time I've looked up the meaning to a Beck song, it's just that "this song is gibberish". Good for him and the maggot on his sleeve. This guy could sample a giraffe farting and rap his grocery list over it and I would be like "ah, classic Beck". Classic Beck. 4/5
One of those artists who can keep coming up with new sounds and ideas. And make them entertaining.
Weird and wild, bus coherent still, impressive
See previous day's review haha Still not my favourite Beck album but a good one
I can't pin down what to even call the genre of this album. Splashes of rock, rap, electronica, blues and more. Definitely unique. I'd've ate this up if I was like 19 when it came out. Got a cool factor.
Beck has a ton of 5 star songs, but I don't know if he has any full 5 star albums. 4 rock hard stars out of 5.
Devil's Haircut is brilliant, and there are some other great tracks on here
3.5 stars. Fun and at times wacky. Gets a little experimental-ish at times which I wasn't a fan of, but overall enjoy Beck and this earlier work even if track by track it's hit or miss. Standouts are "Where It's At" and "Devil's Haircut"
Remains great after all these years. His music gets kinda out there sometimes but he’s so listenable.
The album was about the last time I paid attention to Beck. I definitely owned it on CD at one time. It's very good, though like always with Beck (up to the point I was keeping up anyway), there is this pervasive tone of kind of detached intellectualized calculation - what might less charitably be described as smugness, but I think it's more just the typical curse of post-modernism preying on the brainy type. In songs like Jackass this album occasionally transcends this and expresses something with genuine sincerity.
She's got a hand on a wheel of pain She can talk to the mangling strangers She can sleep in a fiery bog Throwing troubles to the dying embers She's alone in the new pollution Good album. I admit that I didnt appreciate it when it released, but in retrospect I understand what some of my friends were making such a big deal out of. 4/5
4.5
Beck is one of my favorite artists.
This is my first time listening to a Beck album. Great 90’s alt rock album, enjoyed how different this sounds and feels very ahead of it’s time.
This Beck built well on the previous Beck and gave me more of what I wanted with less filler. Mellow Gold lost me more than it kept me, though at the time the mix of musical styles really set this stuff apart. Loser and Beercan are all I remember off of that one. Maybe that has something to do with the song titles that had little do with the songs? Whereas on Odelay, somebody sat Beck down and said "Look. Simple titles. Call these songs the same thing that the people who will listen to them will call them." So we get Devil's Haircut, Hotwax, Lord Only Knows, The New Pollution, Derelict, Where It's At, Readymade... Each one of these I can immediately hear the tune in my head. Not as a good as Midnite Vultures and Sea Change, though.
Not every song hits, but I always respect what they're going for. Love the experimental feel, but probably not an every day listen for me
Very odd, in a good way, with a dazzling range of styles and genres. Influences from rock, country, hip-hop, dance, and a bunch of other fields. I already loved the "big" songs, but was pleasantly surprised by how good some of the others were as well. Falls just short of a 5 🌟, but only just!
Not gonna lie, I am not a Beck fan. From time to time I convince myself to listen his discography, but tend to end a little bit bored. Maybe it’s his delivery, that monotone voice, because the music itself rocks big time. Well, turns out that I’m here, listening to the famous Odelay, and did not dislike it. The first 40 minutes ran smoothly, but later was checking how much time left in the album. I guess it’s me, not him with his inexpressive voice. 3.5 / 5
There's something pretty quirky about Beck's sound, a blend of rock with elements of hip-hop, country and other influences and a heavy twist of Americana. The album was a good listen but I'm not sure I would have it on repeat
Beck is pretty cool 7/10
7/10. It was good for a while, then I kinda stopped enjoying it. Overstayed its welcome, I suppose
Geinig album. Klinkt als veel jonko’s en met heleboel tijd over. Benieuwd naar de andere albums van Beck!
Still sounds great after all these years.
Beck is great. A lot of his stuff is inventive and timeless and this album is no exception.
I love Beck. I have for a long time. Beck doesn't always make sense. Musically he is great, like Thundercat, I'm not sure he always takes it seriously, but do you have to? Isn't that part of being an artist?
I enjoyed it. Part Rock, part hip hop, everything there to keep your interest
4.25
great album, original for its time
This is a very fun album. The rock, folk and hip-hop influences are blended together in an idiosyncratic and frankly chaotic way that is charming enough to somehow just work
Definitivno top 3 Beckova albuma. Taj potez: Mellow Gold - One Foot in the Grave - Odelay
This album has so much going on and it all works so well. Every little sound effect adds positively to the record. Has a ton of range and is thoroughly enjoyable. Production, lyrics, instrumentation were all perfect and my only critique is that it isn’t that exciting. I believe it to be one of the rare times when an album is completely realized and executed exactly as the artist intended. 4/5
Beck’s idiosyncratic style finally reaches a wider audience on this, his fifth album. He’s unafraid to experiment, gleefully flitting between styles while keeping his quirks.
Today's album is by alternative rock artist Beck. I am familiar with Beck's singles such as Loser, and Novacane, but have never delved into his stuff too much. Beck is an artist who is great at exploring several genres of music, blending them together, and making it his own. For example, on this one record, there are hints of country, folk, hip hop, rock, and psychadelica. I thouroughly enjoyed the genre exploration, because each song could sound vastly different than the last, and it made it exciting to keep listening to the record. It didn't get stale. I really enjoyed the heavy sludgy guitars in the song Minus, as well as the bluesy folk blended with hip hop sound of Hotwax. By times, the music sounds like the Beastie Boys. Beck's lyrics are hilariously nonsensical, and may only make sense when one is stoned. A few examples of some noteworthy lyrics include: From Hotwax: Sawdust songs of the plaid bartenders, Western unions of the country westerns, Silver foxes looking for romance, In their chainsmoke Kansas flashdance ass-pants Or a few examples from Minus: It's a sensation, A bankrupt corpse, In the garbage glasses, With the crutches of frogs... And... Radiation, Feeling the force, Karaoke, Vomiting morons..... Overall, a great listen today, and one I will definately revisit in the future! Favourite songs: Hotwax, Where It's At, Devils Haircut, Novacane, Minus, Jack-Ass, Sissyneck, Ramshackle, High 5 (Rock the Catskills) Least favourite songs: Derelict, The New Pollution, Diskobox 4/5
Very good album and one I listen to a ton of. Probably due to the who produced it sounds like a stoner version of a Beastie Boys record. Which isn't a bad thing per se. I think his later albums are more interesting even though I'm probably the only one.
I think Beck is fairly brilliant. He blends styles with quirky lyrics and fun, interesting, and contemporary feeling music.
beck is beck
I haven't listened to this since the late 90s, when it was everywhere, all the time, in Sydney. I enjoyed the nostalgia and I think it generally holds up
A large part of me is adamant that Beck is overrated. Why all the Grammys and the notoriety for this guy? Who's son is he? But then, I listen to an album, and I sort of get it. We've had a few now, and every time I enjoy myself. This one's got so many cool, retrofuturistic sounds and touches. Weird synth-y stuff is always enjoyable to me, and while there's not much lyrically to his work (or at least not that grabs me, anyway), he's a sonic virtuoso because I think he does most of it all by himself. Beck is still an enigma to me, but I can dig it. Favorite tracks: Derelict, Devils Haircut, Hotwax, Novacane, Ramshackle. Album art: Always thought it was a creature, but it might just be one of those moppy dogs jumping a hurdle. I like the pic, I like the font. It's a cool cover. 4/5
this is the beck we know and appreciate, not that fucking godawful country version of beck we had on that last absolutely forgettable album of his on this list. genuinely can't remember it's name and i don't really want to try. anyway, yeah this album is good mad beck. some good, some average but the good is weird shit.
I'm utterly in love with a woman called Becky. She eats crabs outside the local supermarket every Wednesday evening after finishing her part time job as a labourer. She produces the most enchanting fanny farts that echo around town. I simply must have her.
Pretty good album. I like pretty much every song. However, I none of the songs really stood out or had any energy. Not the album to dance to. 7.5/10
this has been a "i'll get around to it" album for me for a long time, and I'm pleased to say it is phenomenal and fun as hell
It's probably my least favorite Beck album which is to say still pretty awesome and certainly a portent of the incredible magic which has followed this amazing creature and his band. Beck is a wizard and a joy to see in concert. As an aside, I was pretty impressed when he sided with principles instead of money and cancelled Arcade Fire by leaving the tour.
One of the most sonically interesting albums of the 90s.
I put Jack-Ass on a bunch of mixed tapes I made for people. I always enjoyed that that it was so different from the omnipresent Where It's At. The main draw of Beck is that he is not boring.
While I like Beck's later work more than the stuff that made him famous, there is no doubt that this album is packed with bangers.
Very good album
I really liked this. It was fun, interesting, and every song felt like its own unique piece of a larger puzzle. 4/5
Some great songs on here
Rock alternativo. Está bien. Un 4.
Quintessential mid-90's alternative rock. Nobody combines weirdo oddball hooks and avant-garde bizarre lyricism quite like Beck. A devil's haircut indeed!
Never listened to this before. That was solid.
Truly one of alternative rock’s most precious gems.
I was ready to love this but it’s a bit messy for full marks. Sounds like the worst of The Beastie Boys. Some fun samples and classic cuts but a little shouty for me and a fair amount of nonsense. It’s cool that he’s doing his thing though.
The embodiment of cool. The album just oozes it.
4.7 I love this album. So many great sounds and layers on here. Chaos solo at end of where it’s at is so great Love the steel in sissyneck Great hi hat in readymade Girl from ipanema at the end of readymade?? Lol 😂 Guitar Noise in high 5 so sick, and is that a cuica?? Classic 90s drum sound Classic 90s vocal sound (cake, mike doughty)
I’ve never listened to Beck before and I really enjoyed this. I would have given this a 5 had I understood his lyrics a bit more. Some parts really reminded me of RHCP which is not a good thing because I’m always like…what are they talking about
It's interesting weird. A good listening
