People's Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm
A Tribe Called Quest
Reviews (page 8 of 13)
It was a lot of fun. Saved a lot of songs from the album and was vibing
Enjoyed very much. 9 year old son gave most songs 3's and 4's
Overlong and there's better tribe albums, but this is pretty great still.
It’s fascinating hearing what they could do with vaguely familiar beats. A great album even for casual hip-hop listeners.
a classic

Can I kick it?
Nearly 5 stars. A fun, enjoyable listen
A fantastic rap collective, I really enjoyed this album a ton! They brought a very unique and distinct style to the rap genre that I can greatly appreciate.
It's 'da bomb!
Quality throughout!
I like this hip-hop album, great rhythms, great writing, great production, all the songs flow so well together, from one song to another. It was a fun listen to. 4.25/4.5.
Tribe can kick it with me.
Tribe were for me nearly the best of everything about hiphop - jazzy beats with no trap-drums, actually good rhythmic verses and mellow-ish voices trading off verses. Can't find anything specifically negative, but the big negative: it runs too damn long. It ends up sounding repetitive. Partially as a result, it's not quite at the level of their followup album to come but a hell of a debut; cut this down to 45-50 minutes for near-perfection. 7/10 4 stars.
love this 90's hip hop where sampling ruled supreme
Old school hip hop, driven by lyrics and wordplay. Clean, simplistic instrumental elements. Self aware and funny at times. Definitely can feel it’s influence elsewhere. Have to be in the right mood for it, sit and nod music.
Really great beats and supremely fun vibe. But too many pedestrian rhymes that make me cringe. Very cohesive album that rewards listening to it all in one or two sessions
Nice album with "Can I Kick It?" probably being the most known song on the album. I did notice throughout that TCQ sampled a bunch of well known songs; that's not to say that hip hop groups don't do that, but I guess they go with lesser known songs so it flies under the radar and becomes less of a distraction. Overall the album is fine, maybe a little too long. 8/10.
Chill hip hop
that beginning with the baby crying is like that grim level on Max Payne where you have to follow the blood trail to the sound of your screaming dead baby. pretty good rest of the album and it's nice to see young men taking cholesterol seriously.
I've been knee'd in the dick enough times to know if I enjoy it or not. The truth is, I find this genre of music hard to stomach most of the time, but this little record caught my ear hard and had me dancing round the kitchen all morning. A ray of light on an otherwise gloomy day. You could say it's a real knee to the dick. Yes, I enjoy it.
Truly groundbreaking stuff. This is hip hop.
Damn is this better than The Low End Theory or am I losing my mind? Why do I never hear people talking about this album and Low End Theory gets all the glory? Awesome. Insane samples - these guys could turn the MeowMix ad into straight fire. Yet again too bloated for a 5/5 though. What's up with hip hop artists and their inability to release albums shorter than 60 minutes?
This is solid 90s hip-hop and I regret that I didn't listen to it more in the 90s (oh, if only I could go back in time and toss the RHCPs and Dave Matthews and substitute Tribe and the Fugees - alas). This album is everything you want in 90s hip hop - peppy, fun, political, great beats. Was bopping my head happily along.
I’m a big Tribe Called Quest fan and I’ve somehow never listened to this album so I’m glad this list inspired me to. A lot of the production on this album sounds a lot less similar to Tribe’s jazz production (except for a few songs) which took a way from my enjoyment a good bit. Overall this is a good album that I’m glad I listened to, not top 3 Tribe though 7.5/10
A more laid back offering from them, if such a thing were even possible. All the things I loved about the other album I had on the list (Low End Theory) are in this too, so I'm happy. Hope there's more on this list as I'd happily listen to another half a dozen of these.
I was really not looking forward to listening to this one... But, DAMN. That was awesome. A Tribe Called Quest is from Brooklyn NY, USA. This was their first album and they have two albums on the 1001 albums list. This is a GREAT hip hop album. Can they Kick it? Yes they can! One of the best albums in the Genre. Up there with Three Feet High and Rising by De La Soul. Love it. Standouts: Can I Kick It? Others: Everything else on the album! Rating: 4/5 (Outstanding)
I was surprised by how much I enjoyed this. The beats and samples were very cool.
Very, very good.
the beats absolutely rip, drums go hard throughout
It was weird since I didn't recall it like I though. Solid album but it took a while for me to get into it. Listening with a sub helps a ton.
This would be the music played at a trendy, millennial gastropub in the South End called the Gallows. You can’t hear the lyrics, but it’s Thursday night, the lights are low, and your exorbitant Negroni tastes sophisticated because you don’t know any better, so it’s a damn good beat. Anytime now, the man perched next to you at the bar will emulate passion of William Wordsworth’s acute depiction of the human condition in The Prelude and how sobering an effect the recent profile of Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie in the New Yorker will have on the next generation. Oh how I love taking comfort in the annals of American expressionism. 3.5/5
A personal favorite so I was stoked to listen. It never gets old
Nice sampling. Really picks up towards the end of the album.
Blast from the past. College day’s frequent play.
Man, I love Tribe. Never really listened to this record, but it definitely makes sense as a precursor to The Low End Theory and Midnight Marauders, which I've listened to a ton. Great record. Standouts: Push it Along, After Hours, Footprints, Can I Kick It?
Some of the compositions overstay their welcome but overall this is smooth AS FUCK hip hop and I needed it today
Neat album
So good, very evocative of the early 90s too
This is a great feel good hip hop album! Some amazing sample work and lyrical flow in here. Very good debut that set up the stage for even greater records! 7.5 out of 10
After Hours is chill as hell I love the scratching on it. The few seconds sampling ‘All You Need is Love’ and ‘Sir Duke’ in ‘Luck of Lucien’ and ‘Footprints’ are cheeky and show how more liberated sampling laws were then (they wouldn’t be so lucky with ‘Can I Kick It?’). First 8 tracks are an incredible run, especially ‘I Left My Wallet in El Segundo’ where the storytelling reminds me of Paul Revere by the Beastie Boys. 4 of the last 6 tracks lack the presence, earworms and fun of the first 8, enjoyable in the background though with the exception of ‘Ham n Eggs’ which I’d wager influenced DOOM’s ‘Beef Rapp’ if not all of Mm…Food. Description of a Fool packs a great message and groove.
Not quite Midnight Marauders but still excellent jazz rap
Awesome predecessor to old school West Coast Gangster Rap. Jazzy backing tracks with heavy synth drums. The Beatles sample caught me off guard. Simultaneously unfamiliar and nostalgic album.
Good
I liked this one! It’s very funny and voicey. I have to go back and read some of the lyrics someday
Loved this Album. Has a nice cruisy flow to it and easy to listen to.
This is good because it is upbeat and happy, but also pretty chilled.
No bar is wack as all bars are pre-wack
A refreshing journey with funky hip-hop beats pushing forward positive vibes.
Biitit, flow, mmmm. Enpä ollu varmaan kuullu juuri muuta kun "Can I Kick It", ja sehän oli lopulta ton levyn massaan hukkuvimpia biisejä.
YES
Shines a light to todays rap music.
Man Q-Tip is just so much better on a project than he is in his solo work. Also when he is in the booth he thrives, man can produce the hell out of an album. This is an amazing hip-hop album and I look forward to listening to their second album when it comes up for me. The bass on this album was amazing. My top tracks were "Push It Along", "Luck of Lucien", "I Left My Wallet in El Segundo", "Can I Kick It?", and "Youthful Expression" the second to last of those being my favorite. Great Album!
Classic
4.0
I don’t know much about rap but this has been great. It’s my second album by the group (after Low End Theory) and its definitely less artsy and influential but at the same time feels much more authentic and fun. I particularly enjoyed the tracks with snarky and funny verses (the parts with nonsense in French are just perfect). Definitely one of my favourite rap albums of all time, which is not that impressive my lack of knowledge in the field, but still! 4.5/5

Great debut from the group that helped set the stage for alternative hip-hop. It still holds up considersbly well even now 30 years on. Could’ve used more Phife though
Varmt, dammigt och mysigt.
Insane beats. The sampling is on an amazing level. Everything flows so well and it just feels like you're floating along on their lines.
Good stuff
Good album, absolutely love this. Love their stuff. They have such a good vibe.
Cool and clever and smooth.
Smooth from start to finish.
I liked this; some of the lyrics were funny or thoughtful, or just a unique amalgm of words
Pretty good hip hop sort of beats. I like it for studying and just general fade out music
I listened to some more recent a tribe called quest stuff, but couldn't really get into it. So it was a pleasant surprise when I did enjoy this one. I like the jazzier style of hiphop
Great rhythms, tracks and rhymes. Not my favorite Tribe album, but number 3 for the one that launched us into Tribe’s orbit
Absolute masterclass of hip-hop delivery and production. The beats are minimal yet demand toe-tapping, allowing the delivery to take center stage while propelling each track along an undeniable groove. The bars themselves are the perfect mix of tongue-in-cheek, witty, and drop-dead serious that allow the words to flow right on top of the mix while packing a serious thematical punch. Overall, this LP is a great reminder of what focused, uncluttered hip-hop can be
Vibin
Some classic songs on this one mixed in with some I really enjoyed but had never heard. A very fun listen
Wish I’d had more time with this one.
Tribe. Enough said
Great I liked it a lot but again a bit long for my tastes
Not my kind of music in general, but a good album from what I could hear. Some interesting samples and lyrics!
Just a wondrous joy all around. Makes the idea of losing one's wallet in El Segundo seem downright giddy.
8/10, headbopping tunes Favs: Can I kick it? Ham N Eggs Mehs: Start of the intro song
Oude hiphop.
This gentler, funky jazzy hip hop is always a pleasure to hear (as opposed to testing aggressive gangster rap). Well done Tribe, Jungle Brothers, De La Soul. This one has Can I Kick It and Left My Wallet In El Segundo. It samples Stevie and Curtis and other cool cuts. 3.5 out of 5
can I kick it?
really enjoyed this, it’s VERY good for a debut album! lots of nostalgia vibes too.
Top 3 Tribe albums for me. Smooth, witty, and funky. This was a big tile in the groundwork of jazz samples in hip hop and gave whole new flavor to the sound. Lyrically intelligent and great storytelling. 4/5 stars.
Jazzy beats, playful laid back lyrics. Ali Shaheed Muhammad is a legend. Needs more Phife Dawg. 4/5
Dope
It’s got can I kick it on and some other classic tracks like I left me wallet in El Segundo and others, this a vibrant exciting tribe still trying to find their groove and sound. Still a must listen alternative rap album 👍
Fantastic album from a period of great albums from them as well as De La Soul and Arrested Development. Intelligent, positive and fantastic music too. So many great tracks on here - Bonita Applebum, Left My Wallet in El Segundo, After Hours, Can I Kick It of course. Highly recommended
So far every song is good to listen to. The beat production is good. I forgot Q-tip is part of the group. He has good rhymes. I’m hoping the rest of the album is just as good.
And for my first hip hop album since making removing the genre filter… The album opens with push it along and my god the sample work at the start is good! I’am I’am surprised by how great this is as an opener Q-tip is essentially introducing himself as an artist with the sharp inelegant lyrics that fill throughout the song.He introduces the others with this wired echoey chat with his group, nice interlude bit. Well luck of lucien does start with part of all you need is love by the Beatles which heightens the song a bit making it sound of a higher level and there’s some jazzy bit too throughout that gives it a much needed personality. This song is more energetic then the last song the beats are better, the rapping is very on point and the samples used are great! Ooh, my first turn table noises came in after hours. The song is good as unlike the last two songs the beat is backed up by other noises ( by what partly sounds like synth and then it goes into drums). The Frogs are wired though. I’am not great with my hip hop knowledge but these guys seem like the masters of the samples making an otherwise okay song into a masterpiece ( oh yeah that’s footprints for you). I left my wallet at el Segundo actually had some guitar parts in the samples which works well! The lyrics tell the story of loosing a wallet ( of course at el Segundo) in a surprisingly lyrically sharp way. Love the angry Spanish/ Mexican men sample at the end. I really don’t like the shaky beat in Pubic enemy but the lyrics are somewhat good especially for the subject involved. I love the samples in Bonita Applebum as they aren’t overused unlike some of the others. The lyrics are okay not they’re sharpest but at least the chorus is kinda catchy. The album slows for it’s best song and biggest hit can I kick it, the it’s probably got the best sample beat of the album and some of the best strongest rapping. A good thing to note though are how cool the turntable spins are in headphones. Anyway good song! Youthful expression also has a decent groove to it and probably my favourite line so far with “ politicians are magicians make your vote they hope you’re wishin” yeah this is the best lyrical track for me in general! Then we have rhythm ( devoted to the art of moving butts) the verses are good but wait are those sex noises before the chorus; also the chorus is weird because it’s proper whispery, not a favourite but good try. Mr. Muhammad is probably the the most “rhythmic” sample filled song of the whole album, it’s a track without personality but I wouldn’t miss it if it wasn’t on the album. Ham n eggs is actually quite interesting for it’s time as it’s a pro vegan song ( so something not common in the late 80’s/ early 90’s times it was written and released in. It’s done in a very of it’s time goofy way but I like it. And the rhythm keeps the same sorta energy of Mr Muhammad. The album’s penultimate track is the rather groovy go ahead in the rain straight up solid beat but it’s one of the worst songs on this album. That last song does flow perfectly into description of a fool though it’s a great closer sharp lyrics, good beat, great rapping. Making most of the song instrumental was a good way to kill of the album slowly, but yeah a banger to end a banger of an album. Well this was a great (yet slightly over bloated) album (even though like 70% of rap albums are over bloated) will definitely revisit!
The vibes flow but still not my favorite Tribe album
Not as good as the low end theory but still great. Great 90s hip hop.
Listened Before? N This is a good album! I really enjoyed it. Good flow, nice production. It feels like the 90s to me. Good nostalgic feeling. This is especially wonderful for a debut album. That being said, it's not really something I'll probably just put on and listen to. Maybe occasionally. Added to Library? Songs added to Playlist - Can I Kick It?
A fantastic album from a fantastic era in hip hop. Has a great flow throughout and hearing Tribe always lifts my mood. As does Q-Tips distinctive voice. It did feel a bit long towards the end, but better too much than not enough. A classic.
bem bom o som, hip hopzao diferenciado vários sample massa
Oh boy. It's been a while since I listened to this. Back when I first got into hip-hop, I really loved early De La Soul, probably at the expense of some of their peers (though I did have a copy of this album). In retrospect, this hangs together as an album way better than the first few De La records. As much as I admire Prince Paul, all the fucking skits and interludes are irritating. "People's Instinctive Travels" has such a great vibe. It's positive but effortlessly cool as well. The production is peak early 1990s hip-hop. The lyrics and the vocal delivery are instantly recognisable. I love how they describe the life of NYC young people hanging out, but they make it almost into a nomadic mythology. I'm not a huge fan of the intros/interludes, and "Pubic Enemy" gets pretty old. Otherwise, almost perfect. 4.5*
A crazily strong debut and from such a young group. This kind of hip hop is so established now but back in the late 80s it was represented by a tiny number of acts, and well against the mainstream grain of the times. Although not all the tracks live up to the standard of the greatest ones, it’s a full and coherent album - slightly ostentatious extra long title and all.
Excellent stuff, loved it
An incredibly important album from the Jazz rap pioneers. I don't enjoy this one quite as much as their two following records, but there are some fantastic songs on here and it's a remarkably solid and confident debut
Easy going, great samples, a pure pleasure
Q-Tip has one of my favorite voices in the genre. His raps are light and fun, smooth and groovy. Topics are diverse: there's a lot of funny stories to imagine and keep engaged. Production is tight, although there are rough edges and transitions that will be fixed in later albums. It's certainly innovative, combining hip hop with jazz and afrobeat better than anyone else in history. Samples do repeat a bit too long at times but there are dramatic changes that grab your attention. I would prefer less famous samples. Everyone knows "Sir Duke" and "Walk on the Wild Side" and it's a bit distracting. That being said, I do like most of the samples, the breaks are clean and it's a chiller vibe than other hip hop albums I'm used to; I wish more albums like this existed. Album could be significantly shorter, with relatively few tracks that stick out, especially on the second half, but they're all solid.
Love these guys. Pretty much my favorite hip hop. Jazzy and well written.
Love the trumpets. Everything is so conversational. It all starts to blend a bit as the album goes on.
This was fun and joyful. It was funky and groovy. A good time!
A great easy listening hip hop album
It says something about an album's quality when a song is repeated three times and I do not mind it at all. People's Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm is a great representative of it's genre, I was positively suprised by it's beats, lirycs, messeging, all of it. A decisively pleasant listening experience and one I will be revisiting in the future for sure. Highlights: Description of a Fool, Can I Kick It?
A surprising discovery for me. I really liked the vibe coming from this record. It can be enjoyed either absent-mindedly while doing other tasks or by actively focusing on the music. Didn't focus much on the lyrics, but it didn't affect my reception. Bits are well thought out and help solidify the pleasurable experience. Highlight: Can I Kick It?
Mocne 4/5
its nice, a step up from classic rap while not falling into the pretty standard gangsta rap variant
Vibed to this while studying for my driver's permit test. It slaps. I got distracted by it though a lot because it changed up a lot. 83/100 Yeye
Left my wallet in El Segundo!
A delectable squirt of early 90s hip hop that is really easy to listen to. Can I Kick It? an obvious stand out track, but all pretty good
I really dig it
Best Song: Can I Kick It? There's a reason this song is so popular. The laidback, slow-drip lyrical flow is about as good here as it is on the rest of the album, but the backing instrumentals here stand above. Worst Song: Mr. Muhammad. The beat is most obtrusive on this track, getting in the way of the flow. Sounds almost Beastie Boys-ish (in a bad way). Overall: Groove personified. This album isn't right for all situations but it's perfect for some. Phife and Q-Tip are on their game for the whole album. The beats are solid, predictable head-nodders, which provide the best canvas for the vocals layered over top.
Was good fun listening, very funky 7/10
Great album. Really enjoyed this
Simple and chill, don't know what else to say about it. But a great album to just have on while working on something else. "Can You Kick It" and "Youthful Expression" my favourite tracks.
Fire, but not as quite as good as TLeT or MM
Incredible beats and production. Though not quite as good as low end theory or midnight marauders. Can I kick is is a top song of all time
Fun album. Lots of recognisable samples and carefree, laid back vibes. 90s hip-hop can be a bit of a time capsule but this feels like it's aged well, and I'm intrigued to listen to the follow-up someday. It has put me right off my ham and eggs though. 3.5.
Really excellent. I already new the singles / hits but the rest of the album was new to me. My kind of hip hop tbf.
That's some GOOD shit man. Mmmm. Tasty.
This album was a sampler's dream. Great beats and lyrics.
Very ahead of it's time. Still has elements of old-school hip-hop, but that's to be expected from a '90 album. Overall, very cool album. A bit repetitive at times, but I enjoyed it.
* Cracking
Classic 4
Pretty solid hip-hop, plenty of groove, though the lyrics are a bit lacking to me.
3.7 - honestly thought I’d like this one more, as I listen to a few of the tracks off of it pretty regularly. It’s got great beats, lyrics and fantastic samples. It’s influenced offspring runs far and deep. That said, falls a little short of classic status, for me and this listen made me realize I probably like Midnight Marauders more for an overall Tribe listen.
Can I Kick It and the first song, loved how chilled it was.
Nice, chill hip hop. Definitely one I would return to.
There are more songs than tracks on this thing; That was clear in just a few minutes and is one of many strengths. Tribe's debut influenced much, and it's impossible to listen without that filter on. The beats, while varied, fade into the background while the runtime stretches. But the vast majority of tracks are strong, the record flows, and the mood set is unique and entirely pleasant.
Not their best but I still like it.
Great old school album. Bunch of sampled songs over the years. Very influential
I don’t love this genre of music, I am simply trying to listen to things I haven’t heard before. I can appreciate the quality of the production and lyricism but personally I wouldn’t listen again. Phenomenal samples, “Can I kick it?” is a great song.
Great debut from tribe. They have a distinct style that flows nicely with solid beats. A couple classics in this album. The beats are unique and sample from some great older songs. 7.8/10
I like this album, not my favorite hip hop I've been introduced through this process, but very good. The rhythm is a bit same throughout with very little tempo change. I like a lot of the sample choices especially of course Walk on the Wild Side. 3 75 🌟
this is the debut album of A Tribe Called Quest and it made great impact. This record is full of jazzy and laidback hip hop. "I Left My Wallet in El Segundo" and "Can I Kick It?" are classics.
A good introduction to Tribe for those who don't know them. Not flawless but a strong and enjoyable album, even for someone who casually listens to hip hop but isn't necessarily a regular fan.
Rating: 7/10 Best songs: Can I kick it?
yeah just lovely very chill, fun and inventive
Surprised to know who had sung the hits
Inventive sampling. There's always something going on. This is a party I want to be at. Really enjoyed it. It's going to stick around
Favorite tracks: - Luck of Lucian, Footprints, Left My Wallet in El Sugundo, Bonita Applebum, Can I Kick It?, Youthful Expression, Rhythm (Devoted to the Art of Moving Butts) Least favourite tracks: - Pubic Enemy, Ham 'N' Eggs, Go Ahead in the Rain Pros: - Super memorable songs and storytelling - Incredible production throughout - Absolutely banging beats - Really creative sampling choices - Love how songs flow into each other - Rhymes sound so effortless and ooze style - So many quotable's throughout Cons: - Maybe feels too much like a Q-Tip project at times, would have loved more verses from Phife and Jarobi - Some goofy lyrics and songs I can't connect with as strongly - Second half doesn't feel as strong as first
The pinnacle of laid-back rap. Best track: Can I Kick It?
Strong album, I love their laid back style.
Really miss hip hop like this. Love it's eccentricity and humanity. So inviting and warm.
Really like this style. I've heard a few tribe songs and this is my fav style of 90s hip-hop.
A Tribe Called Quest! One of the best groups in hip hop history, no question. This is the only of their albums of which I don’t own a copy. It’s a great album, a little bit before their masterpieces but some fantastic, groovy hits on here. This is well before Phife got his fair share of lyrical contributions. The crazy thing about Tribe is even if this isn’t in their top 3 or so albums, it’s still really really good. Q-Tip sounds so great. Favorite tracks: Can I Kick It, Bonita Applebum, Push It Along, Footprints, Go Ahead in the Rain. Album art: Not their best, but still pretty great. The one shown on this website is an anniversary release or something with all the color sapped out of the surrounding art. Really weird choice. 4/5
I'm feeling this one way more than I exspected. Cool!
Can I kick it, youthful expression and to a lesser extent i left my wallet are great tracks. The rest have good samples and decent production but the lyrics are average. Definitely not their best album, The Low End Theory would suit this better.
Really good album. I've never listened to a Tribe Called Quest before, but have been trying to learn more about hip hop and its history. This album is accessible, and features a smooth flow, and beats full of jazz, funk, and rock idioms. This album does run a bit long though. However, I've listened to other albums that are way shorter but feel longer. I hope to listen to more of this group in the future. This album made me excited to delve more into hip hop.
Never listened to A Tribe Called Quest before, unsure as to what genre they even are at this point. First track seems to be starting with a sort of noise collage of windchimes and a baby crying. This is clearly a rap album, and I'm not really into rap. I've enjoyed Push It Along (the first track) and I'm looking forward to what comes after. Luck of Lucien starts with a sample from All You Need Is Love, which I'm pretty sure is also the French national anthem. And also some of Gonna Fly Now. I've always enjoyed mashups and this is no exception. The grooves on this album are incredibly catchy so far. Bonita Applebum's intro is very Ween in my opinion. Oh, I've heard Can I Kick It? before and I never knew it was by A Tribe Called Quest OR on this album. I think it was in Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 + 2. In retrospect I should've known it was A Tribe Called Quest because they basically say it. This entire album has some tasty basslines all over it. Would I buy this album? No. Would I turn it off if it came on the radio? Also no. Favorite tracks: Can I Kick It?, Push It Along, Description of a Fool Least favorite tracks: Mr. Muhammad, Bonita Applebum
Good one - lot of classics here, plus a song about South of the Border?
Im not a hipp hopp head, but this was realy cool
Thoroughly enjoyed this album.
Album didn’t have a lot of songs I added to my liked songs but a great album with a vibe I enjoy
yo what's wrong with snails? FABULOUS it's WITTY and funny, and the beats are *chef's kiss*
A good rap album with a clear and understandable voice.
As far as debut albums go, this one is up there. So many classic Tribe singles, and it really establishes some of the West Coast hip hop and rap of the era. This was the first album in the three album streak of exceptionalness.
Good samples and flow, mellow and smart
Already listened
Saved Prior: None Off Rip: Push It Along (despite the intro/outro), Luck of Lucien, After Hours, Footprints, I Left My Wallet in El Segundo, Pubic Enemy, Can I Kick It?, Mr. Muhammad, Ham 'N' Eggs, Description of a Fool Cutting Edge: None Overall Notes: A very good album. I don't think it ever transcends into a classic album, but it's a very good and very consistent album. All of the songs are good and have good vibes, but I couldn't round up this 4.5 to a 5 despite the amount of songs I saved.
all day vibe
foundational and better than I expected for some playful moody non-swearing old school rap
Brilliant ! Really enjoyed listening to this, gonna have to give it ****
When you sample a song you don’t always necessarily improve on the original but I suppose you do create something new. This album was wholly of its time and enjoyable for me listening today.
7/10. Very solid album throughout, I especially liked the guest appearance of a chorus of frogs.
Classic
I thought this was a cool album. I don’t think I enjoyed it as much as the other album of theirs that I’ve gotten, but it’s not too far off. It’s the same sort of thing though, the music would be fun to just jam to and as a non rap fan I actually could dig what they were putting down. Fun record. Favorite tracks: “Luck of Lucien,” “Can I Kick It?,” and “Youthful Expression”
i love their jazz influenced production. they know how to put a record together. this is about a 3.7 for me so i'll give it a 4
Don’t hold me to this as I’ve never fully delved into the dude’s music, but every time I hear Q-Tip I think to myself, “That’s it. That’s my favorite voice in hip-hop.” Something about the ease of his delivery is so pleasant to my delicate white ears. Anywho, I enjoyed this. And I don’t want no ham & eggs, ‘cause they’re high in cholesterol (except yes, I do).

Well put together, again, very unpretentious. You could see how it inspired a whole genre and how there were no expectations so they were able to experiment and make it their own.
One of their many masterpieces.
Fun, funky, deep, catchy. Love all the samples. Hardly notice the length.
Fun!
Solid r&b album. Pretty simple rap cadence throughout but no mumbling so I enjoyed it. Also not a sex/drugs album.
Not my favorite ATCQ joint, but still an ATCQ joint.
This is such a great classic hip hop album. Obviously Can I Kick It is a banger but Push It Along is just as high on my bangerometer.
Always left wondering whether I love the song because the opening few bars remind me of a the original sampled song and kick my enjoyment neurons off. Nonetheless enjoyed this
not my regular jam, but understandable lyrics and interesting, layered music in a laid-back style
Much of this list has been listening to albums that are predecessors to other good music. This album makes me sad for what has become of rap and hip hop. This album is really good.
Groovy, despite being over 30 years old the beats are still choice. If I have one complaint, this album is very, very Q-Tip heavy (think Phife only got like 2 verses?). It inspired a lot of my favorite rappers, it's nice to hear this album still held up. Favorite tracks: "Can I Kick It?", "Luck of Lucien"
É um bom álbum de Hip-Hop. Possui samples bem legais, batidas divertidas e impacto sonoro. QKZXHBB.
Starts fairly plainly but gathers steam fairly quickly. At first I thought that this wasn't for me. Never been into early 90s hip hop, but the songs crept under my skin throughout my listen. Favorite song: Pubic Enemy.
okkk
kind of conflicted about this one, love the beats and the energy but i am a bit thrown off by the rapping, especially q-tips there are some really good wordplays and lyrics, but the flows and delivery just dont click with me; i feel like they end up being repetitive and predictable the album is ultimately sustained by the production and the choice of sounds, with samples of iconic melodies over hardcore funk beats
Well this was definitely a whole vibe in the early 90s and on through the decade. I honestly never found it all that compelling which is such a shameful thing to say. I did like Arrested Development a lot more for whatever that is worth, but their influence seems to have very much faded. Some fun tracks and whenever El Segundo comes up (I live in LA) I do make the dad joke that I think I left my wallet there, which lands about 15 percent of the time. So rounding up for that.
Great album!
sunshine, rainbows, women and friendship
Not their best album but that doesn't say much - an important, impressive, highly enjoyable early jazz rap album.
Ihan ok, hivenen liian ”laid back”. Tykkäsin sampleista.
i love bonita applebum but that is one of the ones i already knew. i also liked the footprints remix
Not an album or group I had heard of before, but an experience for sure. Catchier than I expected and an enjoyable listen overall.
Meh
Amazing use of samples and rhythms. A mix of old school rap with RnB beats makes for a very good listen. Much more upbeat lyrically than modern rap and ruminations on society are delivered in carefree ways.
For modern ears the beats and rhymes are a little primitive.
Just a tad long at 65 minutes but I definitely was digging the rhythms.
Like a lot of the samples.
The question is still remains can he kick it?
guddd
3.07
A fine hip hop album of the era. Not so annoying like most.
Some great tunes, but the album unfortunately goes on too long and ends up blending together. Alas, the trap of the rap album... At least there are no skits. I love the funk and soul vibes.
My rating 3.4
Would never have listened to this without this challenge and I’m super glad I did ! Very eclectic which I love, I will be giving it more listens as I’m sure it will grow on me even more.
nicht schlecht nicht wirklich krocha
Cool hip-hop album. Immediately distinguished itself from its peers with its jazzy instrumentals and very chill delivery, particularly Q-tip's smooth flows. Their following albums is their all-time classic, but I think this one is just as good. Key tracks: I Left My Wallet in El Segundo Bonita Applebum Can I Kick It?
Great album with a lot of great songs. Not necessarily a ton of variety here but it fits nicely together as a cohesive album. I remember listening to some of their music when I was young and was impressed. I also remember seeing them on MTV back then and always enjoyed their work. I'm sure they inspired a generation of artists that followed shortly after.
Interesting and solid beats throughout, but nothing groundbreaking. As somebody who's not so young anymore I'm glad A Tribe Called Quest was out here years ago talking about eating low cholesterol foods.
Was a chill listen
Decent 3,5
Immaculate storytellers. Can I kick it?
Great beats. Amazing rhythms and flow. Not quite my style but still great non the less
Very interesting beats, especially for 1990. They have definitely made better albums later on, but this is a solid and interesting foundation. My main complaint is that it just kinda lacks the finesse and attention to detail of their later work. The songs also drag on at times. Except for Can I Kick It? there is not a song that hits the groove as well as something like Jazz or Electric Relaxation. It's clear that they've improved a lot after, both in terms of rapping and production.
It’s really a great vibe and I understand why it’s been so influential. I like the samples and it’s just very smooth and easy to listen to. No annoying interludes or intense lyrics. It’s fun! Top Songs: Push It Along, I Left My Wallet in El Segundo, Bonita Applebum, Can I Kick It?
Not necessarily my cup of tea, but crazy production for the time
Intelligent rap worth listening to.
I’m just not that into rap and hip hop
Mä ihan diggailin tästä hipitihopista ⭐️⭐️⭐️
Ok rap
One of the more interesting hip hop albums despite the overuse of the annoying balloon rubbing sound. Voluntarily listened several times. Could have been in the running for a 4, but too much of That Sound.
I apparently forgot to rate this. IIRC it was fine, nothing special but more interesting than most hip hop.
This ain’t really my thing. I enjoyed the first few tracks but lost interest and was ready for it to be over. I can appreciate that’s it’s probably very good at what it does, but no, wasted on me.
You can see where modern hiphop is influenced by albums like this. It was a great listen, but suffers from its length I think. Too many tracks, should have been around 8-10. A lot of the beats start sounding too similar towards the end. Still though, the hits make this a classic.
This was very smooth and easy to listen to. Sounds way ahead of its time. Glad I heard it, but not something I’m likely to return to often.
Rap is not my thing but this was some pretty good shit
Despaired at getting another East Coast rap album of the early 90s period but when I saw it was The Tribe I was interested, since they are my favorites in the genre. Didn't care for it on first listen but listened again with the lyrics out and enjoyed it a lot more until I realized how LONG this album is. You could cut four or five long songs out of this and lose nothing and for that reason I don't think it will enter my rotation.
Really good overall, though some parts (some of the rhymes and beats) stick out as being dated and not very sophisticated.
Fun. Can I kick it! Heard of this one before! Loved the hip-hop and jazz. Always a good combo.
I breath of fresh air after guns and hoes and testosterone. Beautifully produced, great flow, great samples, some good hooks and bounces along nicely. My only complaint are its a bit long and maybe a too sedate.
The first part was not that good. But the second part was really good
good stuff
Since I don’t look anything up about the albums before listening or reviewing, I would guess this is their first one. It’s not bad, some good stuff, some meh. It was an easy listen. Also, some very interesting subject matter for the songs. Can I kick it, dietary suggestions, And always remember to grab your wallet. All in all, it’s not bad.
Have never listened! Is there a genre of hip hop called “cutie?” Will need to relisten and dive into the lyrics. I think I read at least some of this was written when Q Tip was in 10th grade? What. Incredible. Fun breezy vibe for my drive to the beach. Can I Kick It the same week as Lou Reed is funny. Woah reading they didn’t clear the sample so Lou Reed got all the royalties? What.
More hiphop should sample frogs. I recall first coming across ATCQ and groking them as some sort of hardcore gangsta rap group. I was a child, so I knew literal nothing. It wouldn't have been something my family would have said. Who knows. I was pretty surprised when I actually heard them years later. Quest have always been pretty synonymous with groove, and this is true even in this, their first foray. Not a surprise that Ali would be instrumental in the recent Jazz Is Dead series, reintroducing the world to forgotten greats. It's what makes a silly song like “I Left My Wallet in El Segundo” still fun to listen to. That's something the guys got from the very beginning. These guys were so good at this that they literally found the riff that made the Fugees “Killing Me Softly” relevant. Lyrically? This feels a bit like Licensed to Ill, inasmuch as this was made by literal teenagers. It's a good flow, it's relaxed and conversational, which carries over later on. It is intentionally aware of its inspiration and calls out the music it is pulling that inspiration from. But it's also a diamond in the rough still, in need of a little maturation. It's like drinking grape juice instead of wine. This was probably pioneering at the time, but the seams are easier to distinguish now, looking back. Sure, we have Can I Kick It, which is as iconic a song as there was in the genre at this point, and there's a lot of good stuff here, but it needs a little time and polish. 3* but a respectable 3.
Interesting early 1990s hip-hop. Perfect decent but I'm not as keen as I was on Public Enemy from the same era. Some great uses of sampling which I really enjoyed.
In fairness, this isn't my typical listening genre, but I did really enjoy the sampling on this record, and there were quite a few moments of lyrical/rhythmic genius - however, this album did struggle to keep my attention for the whole time. I don't know if I would go out of my way to put this album on again, but I wouldn't skip it if it appeared in my shuffle.
feels like getting submerged in the music, and then pulled up. not to get pretentious but it's so good. meandering in a lovely way.
3.5
Was alright actually, enjoyed the samples on some songs
3.5 stars Good rhymes throughout and a unique flow for the time. But as an album there are too many tracks I’m not interested in, and the recurring interlude adds nothing to the album that’s already overlong. But some great jams of course.
Cool group!
As with the previous ATCQ album, this flows really well but just doesn't do a lot for me. I can appreciate the talent in the rhythm and lyricism. However, nothing stands out and it just passed me by.
This was alright. I liked the range of samples and it flowed nicely but it struggled to maintain my attention and lacked a bit of bite.
I might need to sit on this one for a little bit, it didn't catch me on the first listen but I hear something in it that's cool.
Mítico album, mítico grupo. Cultura.
There's a mellowness to the delivery of this album, it's somewhat laid back and grooves along nicely. Hip-hop is not music that I typically listen to but this is a good listen. I can recognise some of the samples too! The album art is great. An aficionado of hip-hop would probably rate this album much higher than me. Three stars. 1 "Push It Along" (3/5) 2 "Luck of Lucien" (3/5) 3 "After Hours" (3/5) 4 "Footprints" (3/5) 5 "I Left My Wallet in El Segundo" (4/5) 6 "Pubic Enemy" (3/5) 7 "Bonita Applebum" (3/5) 8 "Can I Kick It?" (5/5) 9 "Youthful Expression" (3/5) 10 "Rhythm (Devoted to the Art of Moving Butts)" (3/5) 11 "Mr. Muhammad" (4/5) 12 "Ham 'n' Eggs" (3/5) 13 "Go Ahead in the Rain" (3/5) 14 "Description of a Fool" (3/5) Total -46 Average - 3.29 307/1001 168/307 albums reviewed were new to me
It was fun and upbeat but not my favorite
I like the rhythm and beats on this album. Definitely some kool grooves and upbeat tempos.
Having not listened to this in the 90s, it's so obvious how this became the root/inspiration to much of the genre that followed. Effortless, timeless beats and production. Not my cup of tea when it comes to lyrics and rhythm, but is a project you have to recognize as consequential based on everything that came after.
Another group I've been meaning to check out at some point, as I've known the name for years but never listened to them. I really enjoyed this album, it got catchy lines and funky sounds, what more could you want?!
Good album. Second album that I heard from A Tribe Called Quest and in my opinnion this wasn't as good as The Low End Theory but still a solid album. Liked the groove and rhythms.
no es mucho mi estilo pero god
As rap/hip hop albums go, I didn't hate this.
Me ha gustado bastante, aunque solo me guardo "Can I kick it?".
I've heard bits and parts of this since then, but never really digested the entire thing. Good stuff from a genre I don't normally listen to with a ton of music. The slow, lackadaisical, delivery of rhymes fits well with the groove, but it gets very repetitive throughout the full record.
Canción: Can I Kick It?
Not my tipe but my sister liked it very much
okay not exactly my vibe but that’s what’s great about this website, wouldn’t have heard of this album if it wasn’t for this. overall some songs were fun but in the end a bit overwhelming and i just got tired
Pior que achei divertido o início, gostoso ouvir as rimas batendo. Os caras meteram o hino da frança do início da All You Need is Love.
3.5
Yeah, this is early hip-hop. I like hip-hop because it is on the edge of my techno/ beats world and it can be great. This is ... Okay. I think I don't love the singer's voice and it is ... For ME it is not really outstanding on its own, like there are lots of artists that crowd that room that I would choose first. Nothing here is to hate or bad-mouth, just ... it falls into my "meh" category.

It was okey very repetitive beats but it was given 90's new york so thats what i liked from it
Good album.
Very monotonal but decent. I usually don't focus much on the lyrics so I might be missing something. Anyways, a full hour for this kind of record is way too much.
One thing I've learned from 1001 Albums is that I like hip hop a whole lot more than rap. The beats are good, the rhymes are fun, and although this kind of music just isn't really up my alley, I appreciate the art. Plus, the samples on this album are all of songs that I like.
This is pretty good stuff. Not my genre at all but has a lot of styles mixed in.
Funky Motown Rap.
*Cool record with the sampling and amazing lyrics *I like this era of hip hop but its not an all time favorite genre for me
Didn’t know much of their work, so I was excited! They have such bars. Fav song is ‘Can I Kick It?’.
Not as good as what came after, but decent rap.

3.5 absolutely banging album, would go 4 stars but I have a bias against new school rap 🤣
Not really my thing.
6/10 - It’s a 3 but a great indicator of where the band is going. Love how Tribe pivoted from what was happening in Hip Hop to put their own spin on it. I would hope LET and Marauders is on this list as well.
This is less consistent than future ATCQ albums, but there are glimpses of what's to come. There are a few slightly grating beats (Rhythm and Mr. Muhammad), but for the most part, it's a really solid album. Can I Kick It? is the stand out. 7/10
It had been a while since I listened to A Tribe Called Quest, and I had forgotten just how different and good old hip hop was. This album was good, it didn't feel repetitive and it was fun to listen to, that's something I can say about hip-hop/rap from recent years. 3.9/5
Bra, men ikke helt for mæ
groovy beats, pretty minimalist production, all the songs had a very cohesive vibe, interesting sounding, good flow, rap isn’t really my thing but was still interesting
Made me want to learn more about Q-Tip. Summer Album
Ikke for mæ
