Already know I love this one. Great album.
Very gooooooood
I fucking love My Doorbell. The White Stripes can ring it all day long if they want to. They are at peak weirdo rocking powers here and I dig it. This whole album is a delightful journey of jarring noisy rock oddities that just work; the sum is greater than all of the parts.
i love meg
I mean, it is the White Stripes. No notes.
Not my favorite white strips album, but a great album nonetheless
This is like channel surfing inside Jack White's brain.
From the very jump, masterpiece garage rock. Blue Orchid kicks ass. In the 2000s, I never "got it" with the White Stripes; I "get it" now. They're electric, they're whimsical, and they're unpredictable. What more could you want? The whole album is great, but the acoustic track "As Ugly As I Seem" sticks out to me. A great example of Jack's fine acoustic work.
This is awesome! Especially liked the Little Ghost and Nurse. A bit of horror with a hefty dose of twang.
Almost flawless
LOVE
9/10. Absolutely loved it and was nice to branch out.
I miss some bass.
Gotta love it
One of the greatest albums ever, I don't even need to listen to it AGAIN to give a review. Meg's drums and Jack's mad riffs and perfectly executed harmonies shaped my teenage years.
Solid White Stripes, nice hearing Meg sing and different instrumentation
Just a CLASSIC
I don't believe there exists a White Stripes album that isn't a 5 star album for me. I probably prefer some of the earlier, rawer work, but this is also brilliant.
A million stars. Surely the best band of the century.
Loved this, it’s right up my alley.
4/5
The White Stripes, een band waar je voor moet zijn of niet. En ik hoor Het duo heel graag bezig. Zeer typische stijl van riffs en drumritmes. En de nasale stem van Jack. Topplaat voor mij
Noice
Smooth.
I guess I forgot that I liked The White Stripes.
I love this record. It’s an oddball in their catalog, largely eschewing guitar for a pummeled piano but when it hits, it’s among their best. Not where I’d start you with them, but Denial Twist would be on the mixtape.
Hard to go wrong with the White Stripes for me, although I was a little less enamored with this album than I thought I would be. The relationship drama lyrics got a bit old after a while but I still loved 'Ain't That Lonely Yet', what a great way to end an album. Plus the White Stripes tickle my lizard brain that goes 'ME LIKE CHUNKY DRUMS AND RIFFS' so I was pretty happy with this.
Норм, что-то из детства.
не лучший альбом white stripes, это скорее 3.5
Denial Twist sounds as fresh and vital as ever, My Doorbell's still a whole mess of dumb fun, and there's plenty more to enjoy besides. A low four for the filler, maybe, but a four all the same.
Me gustó! tiene partes en las que suena más como folclórico y eso le da un toque diferente al tipo de género que es, mis canciones favoritas fueron i’m lonely e instinct blues
Album has some nice bangers like "blue orchid" and "my doorbell"
In the first song "Blue Orchid," Jack White sings "You got a reaction, didn't you?" The simplistic driving bass drum and infectious electric guitar riffs certainly got a reaction out of me. The whole album gets a reaction out of me. My foot is still tapping along. It's delightful to hear all the ways The White Stripes play around with such a variety of instruments and sound with the tickling sounds of the marimba, soulful piano, rhythmic shaker, crashing cymbals, energetic mandolin, harmonizing vocals, as well as Jack’ infectious acoustic and electric guitars. The album takes the listener on quite a ride ranging from the upbeat speedy song of "Little Ghost" to the slow mournful piano chords of "White Moon." The lyrical word play of songs like "The Denial Twist" reminds us to listen carefully as Jack White states, "But you were hearin' a different song" and makes us want to listen to it again. I could easily listen to this album again and again.
Great album, what a guy Jack White. Blue Orchid is such a banger. The range within the individual songs alone is wild. No instrument is safe!
Fantastic album 4.4
Pretty cool take on a hard rock blues album with lots of variation
4/5
Kinda cool but not my style
I had recalled this as the Stripes least interesting album, a little too weird and a little off topic. Then I listened fresh. This might be their best record, given that they stripped most of the guitars away and Jack was forced to up his game writing. This one ventures all over the place musically, rhythmically, thematically - it's also dark, ominous, and not a little impacted by whatever tensions Jack and Meg were going through. A real gem of a record that definitely deserves the love it got at the time.
They don't all work, but "My Doorbell" is phenomenal and there are a handful of good songs here, too. The addition of some piano was a welcome injection. Jack White can do plenty with just a guitar, but I get the desire to branch out by album 5 and it worked fairly well. Not my favorite White Stripes album, but still enjoyable. 4.0
01) Blue Orchid - 9,5 02) The Nurse - 8,5 03) My Doorbell - 10,0 04) Forever for Her (Is Over for Me) - 8,5 05) Little Ghost - 9,0 06) The Denial Twist - 9,5 07) White Moon - 8,5 08) Instinct Blues - 8,0 09) Passive Manipulation - / 10) Take, Take, Take - 8,5 11) As Ugly as I Seem - 8,0 12) Red Rain - 8,5 13) I'm Lonely (But I Ain't That Lonely Yet) - 8,0 TOTAL: 8,71 (87/100) Current ranking: 120/947
High-end 4. The Nurse is the highlight but Little Ghost, Ugly as I Seem and White Moon all bangers too
Not the best White Stripes album but still very good.
Good album but not their greatest. Blue Orchid is great though.
As a white stripes fan this album is very different. Features a lot of piano as opposed to jack white's signature guitar. Fantastic music, key takeaways are Denial Twist and My Doorbell
I know and like the White Stripes. I currently have 22 songs liked by them on Spotify - but most of them are on other albums. I have only 2 songs liked so far on this album - "Blue Orchid" and "My Doorbell". So, I'm hoping I discover many more cool White Stripes songs on this one. Thoughts after listening 3 times... "The Nurse" is cool. I like the experimental nature of this one and the use of marimba and piano. I'm digging the more piano based sound of several of these songs. "Forever for Her (Is Over for Me)" reminds me of a Stones song - but can't place it. One of the Stones ones where the piano is driving the song. "Little Ghost" - has a country sound, kinda funny lyrics Also liked "Denial Twist", "White Moon", "Take Take Take", "Ugly As I Seem", "I'm Lonely (But I Ain't That Lonely Yet)" I ended up liking 10 of the songs - all of the ones mentioned above. I like that they expanded their sound with different instrumentation on this one. I like their other albums too - but it's good to change things up. Cool that I got to add 8 more "new to me" songs to my Spotify library. Great job Jack and Meg! Liked songs on Spotify: 10/13 Rating: 4/5
Can't go wrote with The White Stripes
I was excited to see this come up as a White Stripes fan, though it confirmed my view that it wasn’t their best work. Blue Orchid is a great opener, and the start continues pretty strongly with the building intensity of The Nurse and the lively My Doorbell and The Denial Twist. But on the whole, this is a bit of a difficult follow up to their breakout Elephant. It just doesn’t grab you in the same way that that album and my favourite White Blood Cells does. It especially shows in the second half, where there aren’t many standouts amongst a fairly standard blues rock sound. Still a good listen, but not their best.
This is often considered to be the White Stripes' weakest record. I'm here to say that I thought that at first and avoided it because I believed it was such a weird change of pace from how awesome Elephant was. Years later, I've actually come to like it. It's very out of the equation for the White Stripes - it only has 3 electric guitar songs - but the addition of acoustic instruments adds this exotic mystique to their repertoire. I admit it's hard to swallow, but once you get it down and think about it, it's not bad at all. It's a diversion that Jack and Meg wanted to take as artists. Artists need to change when they've reached a certain point; there was no need for Elephant 2. I recall Springsteen doing a similar move when he went from The River to Nebraska or more obviously, Radiohead with OK Computer to Kid A (though this record doesn't come close). White Blood Cells is the album I should objectively enjoy more, but that one fills up with weaker tracks near the end. This is a more matured duo - not at their best, but at their most adventurous. I also think Jack White loves Rita Hayworth. (8/10, 4/5 on this scale)
Fun getting albums from my era of music. Was in high school when this album came out, and The White Stripes were among my few favorite bands. I’ve definitely still had them in playlists in my rotation, but been a while since I listened to this album in its entirety. Man, love that White Stripes sound when it’s working. Blue Orchid kicks it off great. I love the more widespread sound of this album. It’s bluesy at times, country at others. Just good alt rock. My Doorbell is a great catchy tune that isn’t a guitar heavy rock song. As a whole, you realize how less guitar intense this album is as a whole, which is impressive it’s still so good considering that’s Jack White’s forte. Mostly it’s piano forward. Take, Take, Take is an underrated song on the back end of this album that I really like. Really enjoying this on relisten. Always enjoy this band even if this isn’t necessarily their best album. I think because of its variety in the sound, it feels very unique. Definitely a 4, debating up to a 5. Surprised me a little how much I immediately remembered and recognized. I think that’s a sign of a really successful album to stay with you years later. It’s really different for them as a whole and it still all works for me.
BEAUTIUFLDLDLD
Not their best record, but still pretty great
The type of album that shouldn’t be on here because it’s the White Stripes’ 4th or 5th best offering. But it’s the White Stripes 4th or 5th best offering, so it still comes in at a low 4.
A low 4, it's not one of my favourites of theirs
Solid stuff!
great time all around. really catchy songs that are cringe in a satisfying delightful way
Let me tell you something about Jack White. In my Midwestern hometown, he visits from time to time. He still plays the small venue that helped get White Stripes off the ground. In fact, he donated a large sum of money to help that venue install a wheelchair ramp permanently. On top of that, he donated $15k to a gofundme for a bartender who served him once before she was severely injured in a hit and run. He's a real one and doesn't put it on blast. All that said, I think GBMS ranks 4th or 5th in the White Stripes discography. It's got timeless bangers on it, but not quite enough Ball and Biscuit vibes that I crave. We get a bit of that on Instinct Blues but it's limited. Elephant really is the best in the bunch.
I'm in with the in crowd.
Really fun album. Probably not my favorite White Stripes album, as their experimentation in this album doesn't all land for me. But it's still very good.
Rough sounds and does a lot with simple riffs and rudimentary beats.
4 Some great songs on this one, feels like a bit of a random collection though rather than an album that flows together
I’m always impressed with what Jack White comes up with. Suck limited resources, but a great sound and album. Blue Orchid My Doorbell The Denial Twist Take, Take, Take
Thoroughly enjoyed this album, which I otherwise would have overlooked as it sits right in the middle of the more popular white strips records. Nothing stands out as a single to me, but the whole album is tinged with a certain stank that I sorely miss in other post 2000 rock albums.
I think they were finding their feet with this one. There's nothing quite like them and Blue Orchid is one of my favourite songs of theirs, but I think they have done better
Great. Some of my favourite White Stripes songs.
i love the first song obviously. i like whatever that percussion is in the second song, marimba or something? it feels very high school band which you don't see too much in real music i guess but we rock with it. my doorbell is very rocky. there's quite the vibe change in little ghost. it's like almost bluesy but it feels not genuine and i don't really like it. overall it's pretty good though
I didn’t like this as much as Elephant but it’s super solid and some really tracks throughout.
Get Behind Me Satan is probably the least essential White Stripes album on this list (according to most of the reviewers on this site, i can't say for myself since i haven't gotten to Elephant yet) but overall, i found it a fun listen. I really liked a lot of the blues elements on this album as they definitely felt different from White Blood Cells. Jack White's vocals are definitely weaker here than they were in White Blood Cells but other than that, they were pretty good and Meg White sung on a song here too well which is cool. Other than the weaker vocals, i really can't think of many bad things to say about it so all i'll say is that it is a worthy addition to their discography. Best Song: Instinct Blues Worst Song: The Nurse Side note: Is it just me or does Jack White kinda look like Johnny Depp on this cover?
Não é o melhor álbum, mas é bom.
There are more keyboards, more traditional song structures, and I liked this album more than the previous ones. Maybe I'll even start listening to the White Stripes
8.5/10
This doesn’t blow me away like Elephant, but I’m not sure these two were capable of making an album that was less than four stars. It could have been another white stripes album, but they mixed things up a bunch here, and it’s all for the better.
The less garage album of White Stripes. Could be the more original?
solid, early White Stripes
Antes no me daban más. Será que he madurado o que me influyó ver a Jack White en directo. Pero muy bien.
Opens with one of my favourite White Stripe tracks. Great mix of blues and rock
Have enjoyed this for years
Some great iconic songs here. A fair bit of filler too. But overall it left a positive impression.
I am officially a Jack White Stan.
I prefer earlier White Stripes. My Doorbell is pretty fun though.
I loved everything about this album. I’m sure it’s the first time I’ve ever listened to the whole album and I felt disappointed in myself for never having done so before. Every song was unique, with great lyrics and awesome guitar riffs and drum beats. And unlike most on this list, I was genuinely disappointed when it ended. I had no trouble listening to it three times back to back. I could revisit this score. 4+
Not my favorite White Stripes album, but still very good. They blend roots, rock and roll, light metal and other genres seamlessly. Jack White is just an odd duck!
shit forgot to save again. it was a bop. doorbell stood out for its simplicity (and yet not feeling like a drag of a song at over 4min). i took lunch halfway thru which was not conducive to listening. i dunno, somewhere in the 3-4/5 range.
an interesting entry for this list because this one is maybe the least white stripes-y white stripes album. for a band that is famously "only guitar and drums" this album has quite sparse use of the guitar, instead opting for a primarily acoustic instrument set, most notably featuring piano and marimba, and lots of interesting percussion. song for song, it's not my favorite album from jack white, and i think it's a little bit of an odd choice for this list, but this was also a big album for me at the time, as a tween first exploring music outside of my parents' tastes, so i am a little nostalgia blind for it.
Singer reminds me of Led Zep slightly. I enjoyed this.
Standard white stripes stuff
Many styles which is good, some special instruments make sounds like “ ding-“ it’s interesting but seems like not so matched. 3.5/5
Big fan of Jack White but I was never really into the White Stripes. I'm excited to give this a proper listen through. The album has a haunted feel to it that I like. They play with tempo changes and melodies and rhythms that shouldn't necessarily go together, but do really nicely. There's a varied use of instruments, which is cool and makes the album seem like it has many more than two musicians. The fact that they recorded the whole album in their house is really dope too. The negatives: I don't like Meg's voice. Sorry. Thankfully she's not the main focus. I can't really rag on her without also saying that Jack's vocals are also kinda whiny a lot of the time. The drumming definitely shines through when it comes into play, but its often overshadowed by the wealth of other instruments present on the albun. Get Behind Me Satan just doesn't quite click with me all the way through, but I really like most of it. Standout tracks were "The Nurse" "My Doorbell" and "Little Ghost." There's a lot to unpack here and I feel like there will be something new to discover each time you listen. It's a 4 for me.
I liked it!
**Get Behind Me Satan** (2005) is arguably The White Stripes' most divisive and experimental record—a deliberate rupture from the guitar-drum minimalism that had defined their first four albums. Released at the height of their fame following *Elephant* (2003), it finds Jack White largely abandoning his signature squalling Airline guitar in favor of piano, marimba, and more baroque arrangements. The result is an album that is simultaneously their most ambitious and their most uneven. --- ## Production & Sound After working with Liam Watson on *Elephant*—famously recorded with no technology made after 1965—Jack White returned to the producer’s chair for *Get Behind Me Satan* . The production is sparser and more deliberately artificial. Where *Elephant* sounded almost live, this album flaunts its studio trickery: backwards vocals, dramatic stereo panning, songs that end in mid-note, and a general sense of constructed unreality . The most radical departure is the instrumentation. Jack White plays guitar on only three of the thirteen tracks—a fact loaded with symbolic weight, given the band’s obsession with the number three (Third Man Records, the red-white-black color scheme, the traditional three-instrument setup) . In its place, piano dominates, with heavy use of marimba adding an almost exotica, 1950s-lounge quality to several tracks. "The Nurse" is the most extreme example: murmured vocals and tropical marimba are violently interrupted by sudden bursts of drums and distorted guitar, creating a sense of genuine unease . The production has been criticized by some as "hollow" or "thin," with drums that sound like they were recorded in another room . Others praise its analog warmth and the clarity with which each element—piano, percussion, voice—can be heard in isolation . --- ## Lyrics & Themes Jack White described the album as an exploration of "characters and the ideal of truth" . The title itself—*Get Behind Me Satan*—is a biblical phrase (Matthew 16:23) that Jack explained as a declaration of putting troubles behind him: "Satan is the end of any unhappiness I have" . The lyrics are overwhelmingly dark, paranoid, and accusatory. "Blue Orchid" opens with the image of a flower corrupted ("You took a white orchid and turned it blue"), a metaphor for innocence destroyed . "The Wreck" features direct confrontation: "You think not telling's the same as not lying, don’t you?" . "The Nurse" drips with suspicion ("The one that you’re trusting’s suspiciously dusting the sill"), one of the rare drug references in the White Stripes catalog . Two songs explicitly reference Rita Hayworth. "Take, Take, Take" is the album’s dramatic centerpiece—a piano-and-tympani-driven narrative about a fan pestering the 1940s film siren in a bar, asking for an autograph, then becoming outraged when she won’t pose for a photo. The chorus ("Take! Take! Take!") reads as Jack’s commentary on the vampiric nature of obsessive fandom, filtered through his own discomfort with celebrity . Meg White’s vocal turn on "Passive Manipulation" (38 seconds) delivers the eerie line: "You need to know the difference between a father and a lover"—continuing the band’s long-standing, deliberately provocative incestuous subtext . The closing track, "I’m Lonely (But I Ain’t That Lonely Yet)," is a country waltz of contemptuous resignation that Loretta Lynn could have sung . --- ## Musical Range The album’s stylistic breadth is genuinely startling: - **"Blue Orchid"**: A falsetto freakout built on a relentlessly repetitive fuzz riff, weirdly reminiscent of contemporary Daft Punk - **"My Doorbell"**: The funkiest song the band ever recorded, driven by twin piano-and-drum percussion, with Jack almost rapping the tongue-twisting chorus - **"The Denial Twist"**: Adds bass guitar for depth, making a melody reminiscent of "Fell In Love With A Girl" feel heavier and more menacing - **"Little Ghost"**: Fiddle-driven hillbilly country - **"As Ugly As I Seem"**: Meditative folk with bongo drums, compared to the quieter moments of The Beatles’ White Album - **"Instinct Blues"**: The album’s concession to blues-rock traditionalists, though even here the structure is loose and unsettling --- ## Influence & Legacy *Get Behind Me Satan* is best understood as a transitional record. It represents the moment Jack White began to outgrow the self-imposed constraints that had defined the band—"the aesthetics, and the methods we use, and the instrumentation have always been purposely constrictive," he had told NME, arguing it was "tougher to stay in the box" . This album is him stepping out of that box. It prefigures Jack’s later work with The Raconteurs, his solo career, and the genre-hopping eclecticism of Third Man Records. The heavy piano presence and narrative songwriting pointed toward *Icky Thump* (2007) and beyond. For a generation of indie rock bands, it demonstrated that "stripped down" didn’t have to mean "guitar only"—that minimalism could accommodate marimbas, tympani, and country waltzes. However, critical consensus has been mixed over time. Some listeners see it as the beginning of the end for the duo, arguing that Jack’s worst instincts—self-indulgence, lack of editing, pretension—began creeping in once he abandoned the rigid limitations that had forced discipline upon him . --- ## Pros - **Fearless experimentation**: The band deliberately destroyed their own formula, risking alienation of their fanbase - **Narrative ambition**: "Take, Take, Take" and "The Nurse" represent genuine artistic growth in songwriting - **Piano-driven reinvention**: Tracks like "My Doorbell" and "The Denial Twist" prove Jack could rock without a guitar - **Atmospheric cohesion**: The album maintains a consistent mood of paranoia, spookiness, and unease despite its stylistic variety - **Strong closing stretch**: "As Ugly As I Seem," "Red Rain," and "I’m Lonely" form a powerful final act ## Cons - **Uneven quality control**: Several tracks feel like sketches or filler—"Little Ghost" and "White Moon" have been singled out as underdeveloped - **Overuse of similar piano patterns**: Multiple songs rely on the same rhythmic piano figure, creating a sense of repetition - **Marimba overexposure**: The instrument, charming in flashes, can become grating across a full album - **Deliberately alienating**: The lack of guitar will disappoint listeners who came for Jack’s virtuosic riffing - **Pacing issues**: At 13 tracks and roughly 45 minutes, the album can feel longer than it is, with momentum sagging in the middle --- ## Verdict *Get Behind Me Satan* is not The White Stripes’ most essential album—that title still belongs to *White Blood Cells* or *Elephant*—but it may be their most *interesting*. It is the sound of a band with nothing left to prove choosing to risk everything anyway. For every "Blue Orchid" or "My Doorbell" that works brilliantly, there is a "White Moon" or "Little Ghost" that feels like an unfinished experiment. Yet the album’s very messiness is part of its appeal: it captures Jack White at a moment of genuine creative restlessness, unwilling to simply repeat the formula that had made him famous. Whether that restlessness represents evolution or the first signs of artistic drift depends largely on how much patience you have for marimbas.
I had a pretty healthy obsession with Jack White for a long time, but I kind of skipped over this album, likely because it didn’t have the same guitar riff focus of previous albums. Listening to it now and I’m surprised at how weird and experimental some of these tracks are, especially those featuring the marimba.
I loved this. Has never listened to this album before and I wanted it to never end. Great stuff!
I was reaching a point with these two where I thought fuzzy, distorted guitar riffs were all they had to offer. The deep cuts put holes in that theory, and show why listening to an album in its entirety can be such a treat.
very good, didn't feel as tightly focused as Elephant, made me reminiscent of 2005
3,5 a 4 sterretjes.
4/5
Surprisingly not bad Forgot to save the songs, but definitely some to like
This was fine to listen to while doing spelling words with daughter.
Meg White for life.
A good, solid album. People who say Meg White is not a good drummer need to listen to the listen to this album, though! She really shines through on it! It's an album with good songs, but some songs can fall off. But in all, a good album.
This one is hard for me because there are some songs that I really like and some that I really don't like at all. Their style is kind of everywhere, which I appreciate. Overall it's good.
This is tied for my favorite Stripes record. While I generally skip around on their albums, there's not really a bad song here, just ones that I need to be in a certain mood to enjoy. Come on, do the twist.
I've always had a soft spot for Jack and Meg's music and this album is no different. Four stars.
Didn’t like the back end so much but loved the beginning!! 3.75
Yeah, fine. It is good, but doesnt do a lot for me. It very nearly does quite often but never quite makes it. Decent enough. 3.5
It's the white stripes so of course it's good but it's a bit too piano lead and cleanly produced to really showcase them at their best. Blue orchid is great and there are still enjoyable moments throughout but I want a few messy dirty blues tracks. Good album but not great. 3.5.
A rollicking ride - as usual, quite surprised how many tracks I know, despite not being a White Stripes fan. Blue Orchid, The Nurse, My Doorbell, Take Take Take, and As Ugly As I Seem were the top ones. I think I like it as I'll take this sort of alt rock over most other genres any day of the week, but I understand the criticism of the band and this album - it is quite simple overall, just lots of distortion and space between the drumming, and while I believe it was meant to be themed, I do not perceive a theme. I think I'm happy we've heard enough White Stripes for this list, but throw another album on and I'll be surprised again at how many I know.
Not sure I've heard this album before. As it is the white stripes, my expectations were high, and I think this exceeded them! I might put this above white blood cells..... Not as good as elephant though imo. My favourites were: Blue orchid My doorbell Little ghost The denial twist 4.5, not quite a 5
We listened to this laying in the grass in the front yard. It was a lot better than mommy expected, she really like the song "Forever for her"...she kept listening to it over and over so you kind of forgot what the rest of the album sounded like. I liked it well enough...I know Daddy likes Jack White a lot so I am sure I'll be hearing more and more of this.
Best Songs: Blue Orchid Little Ghost I’m lonely (but I ain’t that lonely yet)
I have a real human friend who thinks this is their best record. (Something about the piano I think?) At their best, the Stripes' performative schtick toes the line between clever and cute, and they're dancing all over that in the first half with songs like "My Doorbell" and "Little Ghost." I also think the vocals on "Forever for Her" are a pretty grating. But the back half is a run that competes with the best stuff of their discography for me. "White Moon" sends the vibe into a more contemplative space, which pays off on moody career highlights like the self-effacing "As Ugly as I Seem" and blues ragers "Instinct Blues" and "Red Rain," either of which could have been on their more blues-y early releases. It's a helluva run and it saves the album from being a notable step back.
This is some good shit.
Better than I remember 4/5
Lightning in a bottle, except of course they did it again and again.
The best White Stripes album
What a range
Pretty solid overall, blasted through though, will look back at it
Had a decent time with this album. Not my favorite but it was enjoyable. Overall only had one track I want to come back to - The Denial Twist. Jack White certainly tries to do everything he can think of when he makes music
I like the White Stripes, but I feel like this is their weakest album. I prefer their first three albums to their last three. They feel a bit more homemade and less produced
Oh man. Starting off strong with Blue Orchid. A marimba on track 2?! I used to LOVE My Doorbell. Overall, I enjoyed this album. Not all bangers but a good album.
I don’t normally dig The White Stripes but this is a solid record. I enjoy the songs they don’t sound like typical Stripes the most.
The White Stripes are so fucking good. Told album was great and Blue Orchid and My Doorbell are definitely in my top 5 songs that Jack White ever did. Although this isn't my favorite album of theirs it's still pretty solid.
A really good album. The front half is kind of overloaded with all the best stuff, and the second half kind of waffles a bit. It does have a strong ending number though. It’s got some bluesy elements mixed with that indie folk nonsense.
First of three White Stripes albums in this experience. I remember some of the singles from this album on my iPod growing up. These included "Blue Orchid" (a killer way to start this album) and "My Doorbell" but I was surprised that I recognized more songs than I thought, such as "Little Ghost" and "The Denial Twist." The songs other than these are a fun collection of various styles that make for a fun overall experience. While far from perfect, and far from The White Stripes's best album, I still had fun with it and I can't ask for much more from an album on a Monday. 3.5/5 rounded up to a 4/5
once again a strangely good album that i cant really define
I have listened to this band many times before when their albums were released so this was nostalgic if nothing else. I used to like this music a lot and it seems like I still do since I really enjoyed this album. Nothing that stands out as an absolute hit to me but a solid album with good music that I wouldn't mind coming back to or picking some songs along with some from their other albums and listen to from time to time.
Love but not quite White Stripes best...
Woo! This rocks.
Love the white stripes. Great album but not my favourite of theirs. Really like their use of piano, acoustic guitar, and marimba in contrast with the electric guitar and drums - the blend of genres is done so well with each song bringing something slightly different Favourite song was hard to choose but I’ve gone for Denial Twist - takes me back to listening to that on repeat in the school bus. Shout out to Poppy for introducing me to Jack White on said school bus
mostly all enjoyable with a few really good ones. nostalgic.
The band continue to experiment and evolve their vintage sound to the point that it sounds cutting edge. Just listen to the guitar tone on opener 'Blue Orchid' for proof of this. The burst of aggressive drumming paired alongside the haunting use of a marimba on 'The Nurse' is another example of their experimentation paying off. The more blues-flavoured tracks don't sound derivative due to Jack White's guitar tone sounding more loud and raunchous than ever compared to previous White Stripes records. Songs like the piano-led 'My Doorbell' and the folksy 'Little Ghost' show a band that aren't afraid to embrace retro styles, even if they are way out of fashion. This is a band that is simultaneously both old and new.
I don’t know what to make of this one. Initially found it rather boring but then it picked up intriguingly in the middle, with hints of folk country and late Sixties/early Seventies, only to taper off again. Probably leaning towards 3, but rating it 4 because I needs to listen to it more, but also the project paused itself again and I want to move on… 3.5
Can’t believe it took me so long to listen. Worth a revisit
This is an awesome album, its raw sound and folk-type songs make for a great listen. This may be my favourite White Stripes album. It was also a good opportunity to read about the VERY odd relationship they had sister/spouse, etc!
Such a strong album. I marked 7 songs. It’s more varied in style. Most songs are less guitar, more piano. They are so good at blues. The album has songs in other styles and most of them are good too, though I could do without Meg’s singing - sounds amateurish.
Not their strongest outing, but still strong than a lot of this list.
Just doesn't hit the way their earlier albums do. Still fantastic in parts (My Doorbell esp.) or even in parts of songs (Take, Take, Take). Compared to some of the dreck on this list, it's great. Compared to the near song after song brilliance of White Blood Cells or Elephant, it suffers.
Not your typical white stripes album but interesting and a new direction. Fun listen.
Quite a few of them that were very catchy. I liked it
Love the upfrontness of this stuff. Very honest, very authentic, very creative. Good stuff
Better than i thought it would be with that cringe cover
I’ve hear this one before but I do not own it. I thought I bought this back when it came out but it doesn’t appear in my library, so either I lost it or forgot to upload it. It’s been forever since I listened to this last. This starts off like your standard White Stripes album where there are 3 or 4 really good songs and the rest are not bad but unremarkable. However, the unremarkable songs are mostly front loaded and there aren’t many of them. Most of the deep cuts are good and have interesting things going on, where they branch out beyond the garage rock sound they stuck to in previous albums. All in all I’m pleasantly surprised.
a great album, doorbell is a great song
Nothing will compare to White Blood Cells. But this is a good album and I’m thankful for Jack White in all of his forms.
Excellent
A very good album. 4stars. Fave track - as ugly as I seem.
It doesn't really feel like a Whote Stripes album but it's a good album.
Not amazing. Almost three stars. 7/10
Very enjoyable new album for me.
Lo fi goodness
8/10 Best songs: The Denial Twist, Little Ghost While this album probably never should have been on this list (it was later dropped, and the first two White Stripes albums are certainly better than this), it's good rock. Nothing really stands out, but it's solid all around.
I'd forgot how good this album is. I'd forgot how good jack White is. Damn.
Jack White is a great song writer, lyricist and musician. The album has a variety of songs. I really enjoyed it.
Definitely wore this one out in college. Very atypical from previous harder albums (at least in terms of the hits), Get Behind Me Satan is eclectic in the best ways. And catchy as fuck.
I’m a fan of the white stripes. Just wish I’d seen them when they played Harvesters in Palmerston North before hitting it big
Wow, Blue orchid is an insane opener to this day!. To think how massive they were in the 2000s fresh new alt-rock scene for how short they lasted... even though their music chemistry is undeniable. These two were just meant to play together and every song here is proof of it; that chaotic guitar-drum combo is what made their sound unique. Definitely a product of its time but still a solid one, there seems to be a lot of organic instruments present on the production/arrangement for the album (something not that common nowadays, sadly) and you can tell where's the influence from other bands, so i see why people discussing their impact say that this is their most underrated work. It was a nice listen, i liked it.
Yeah Jack White is cool, but he’s nothing without his sister / incestuous lover drummer!
Sometimes it can be so easy. Fav: Blue Orchid
This is my favorite White Stripes album. It starts out so strong, and the first 6 songs especially are just so good. Forever For Her (Is Over For Me) has been one of my favorites since this came out. It drags a little in the middle for me, but it still ends strong and Red Rain and I'm Lonely (But I Ain't That Lonely Yet) are solid closers.
Really cool, fun album. My Doorbell was my song of the album with Forever For Her (Is Over For Me) being my fav first listen with Instinct Blues and Red Rain being my other highlights
Хороший альбом, но не всё понравилось
Day 191 Actually hadn’t heard this before despite playing other white stripes albums loads back in the day, knows how to write a tune like. Highlights Blue Orchard My Doorbell Denial Twist
This was a forgotten album for me. Like . . . I forgot they had an album between Elephant and Icky Thump. It's a good. I should have paid it more mind. There are tracks on here I know, of course, but in many ways this felt like listening to a new White Stripes album. What a kick!
I like most everything the White Stripes did, and most everything JW has done solo, but some of it is weaker than others. I'd lump this under the weaker side of his work. I think that opinion is mostly a testament to my personal limitations as a music listener rather than to the White Stripes' work. I'd rank this a 3.6, so rounding up to a 4.
I guess this means we are getting a minimum of three White Stripes albums since this can't be the only choice from their discography. It's a better record than I give it credit for and I enjoyed revisiting it since I never listen to this album. While I think they hit their peak a few years earlier, I appreciate that there are a lot of different styles and ideas here. The Nurse is a very strange song, at least from an arrangement standpoint - marimba and art metal guitar. Pretty unusual, especially leading into the single from the album which is straight from their playbook. That was an intentional pairing. There are a few too many misses on this album but I appreciate swinging for the fences.
4/5 - Nobody is here for the marimba; let's be honest. It's hard to ding any album by The White Stripes, but this wouldn't be in my top 3 by them, so a 4 it is.
Well it’s safe to say this wasn’t what I expected from The White Stripes, but I really enjoyed it! There were some really catchy tunes on this album that kept me pretty hooked from start to finish. Only slight downside for me was the excessive ‘crashing’ from Meg on The Nurse. The diversity on this album was a pleasant surprise that kept me engaged with it during my drive in to work this morning!
Loved this
Started out just good, but then quickly got great.
This was actually the first white stripes album I remember owning, I think I asked for it for my birthday and I owned it on copied CD! It still slaps, I love it so much. Some tracks I still listen to semi-regularly like denial twist and so many others I love that I’d forgotten about. I love this album because it feels experimental in that it plays with so many genres but (imho) does it expertly. And as a lover of talented freaky lil dudes™️ I’m probably always gonna make time for Jack White. Definitely one you’ve gotta hear in my view.
Really nice! Not what I thought their music was like, in the best way! Definitely added a few of their songs to my liked. 4/5 ⭐️
Easy to forget how good their songs are
Great Songs: Blue Orchid, My Doorbell, Forever For Her (Is Over For Me), The Denial Twist, White Noise, Instinct Blues, Passive Manipulation, As Ugly As I Seem, I'm Lonely (But I Ain't That Lonely Yet) Good Songs: Little Ghost, Take, Take, Take, Red Rain Mid Songs: The Nurse Bad Songs:
Another great entry by the White Stripes...probably if I knew there were 3 WS entries prior to starting I wouldve believed it quite excessive. I stand corrected
This album is great, wish I'd listened more when it came out.
This one rocks Jack white knows how to make an album
思っていたよりもドラムとギター以外の楽器が鳴ってるけど、依然として制約の中で良いの音楽をやろうとしている姿勢が伝わってくる。
Big White Stripes fan. Not my favorite of theirs, but I still enjoy it. I'd probably only put this above Icky and their debut. That said, this is still a solid 4/5.
I think The White Stripes were always a couple of years out from when I really got into music, so this is a joy of a new listen to me. Jack’s voice is so layered to me, the instrumentalism is fascinating
I love the blend of different genres, it kept me forever engaged and excited.
It's a huge switch up from Elephant, but I enjoyed this album much more
More varied than I expected
Not every song here is my cup of tea but overall very much enjoyed this
i like it. this is a good one
I prefer the more alternative songs to the melodic ones. Interesting use of instruments.
I've never been a big fan but this was quite enjoyable.
Good album
Incredibly good. Changed music. Stands the test of time.
My first four star white stripes review still undeniable and unmistakable. They could write songs and play in a style all their own. Jack finally had some weirdo money on this album so it really gets big but there’s also a few snoozers that are present on the other albums. Overall another interesting and great musical statement from one of the greatest bands in the last 20 years.
This is just great rock music. It’s got that minimal, stripped-down style that cuts right through the noise. Jack's singing is a highlight. I really dig the experimental side of this one. Spins: 1 Playlist Additions - Blue Orchid - My Doorbell - Little Ghost - The Denial Twist
I really enjoyed the first few songs of this album (especially the leading track Blue Orchid) and thought it may end up being a 5 for me. But I thought the rest of the album lulled, until the last track which I thought was great but did not feel like the same album as the stuff at the beginning I enjoyed. This was right on the 3/4 border for me, barely sliding into 4* for how much I liked Blue Orchid
One of the best recording by the Whte Stripes. I play some of these songs here and there but it is not one of those just sit there, put it on the turntable, and chill out. It is quite energetic so it is like cake, only can have it some of the time.
Perfect simple thrashy melodic songs I love her drumming oatterns
Class.
The White Stripes were a unique and special band the likes of which I doubt we'll ever see again, unfortunately. I love this album. It's their quirkiest album, and to me it's the album where Meh shined brightest. I really hope she's doing well. Only knocking it down to 4 because they have two better albums on the list, and I've tried to stay consistent in only giving the best of the best 5/5
Great sound. Standout track: My Doorbell
-love the vibes! The mix between rock and folk. Fav Song: My Doorbell
Liked the mix of old style WS guitar and drums with new stuff like Doorbell
I went back and listened to the other White Stripes album I’m familiar with, White Blood Cells, and this album does sound a little lacking compared to that. Doorbell was my standout favourite track, but I liked Little Ghost as a quirky little bluegrass song, and Take, Take, Take was a memorable little story about meeting Rita Hayworth. Overall, I really enjoyed listening to it, so I think it deserves a 4.
Jack White never fails.
7/10
I was expecting more of the Seven Nations Army vibe. This was quite different though but you could still tell it was The White Stripes. Fun short album! The White Stripes played a secret acoustic set on a Winnipeg Transit Bus back in 2007. I’ve yet to meet someone who was there to experience it. But I’m down with artists doing random pop-ups. They of course played the wheels on the bus.
it's pretty okay
It was good.
Wonderful nostalgic album!
The voice is a bit too whiny, but there were a few fun songs in the album, such as Blue Orchid and My Doorbell, that I couldn’t help but enjoy.
On vient pour Blue Orchid et Instinct Blues, on reste pour My Doorbell et The Denial Twist.
I really like the first half of this album. 8 am indifferent towards the second.
If you combine The White Stripes and The Black Keys, you get a full piano and a funeral for Patrick Carney.
It's not as iconic as their prior albums, but it's still good stuff
This is the album that got me into the White Stripes and it holds up!
Amazing what a little variety and distinction between tracks can do for making an album more interesting to listen to.
iconic and for me nostalgic
Never listened to this one beyond the singles before. Not their best album but pretty good.
I remember not liking this that much after elephant as a teen but that's obvious now because it's definitely a much more mature album and I was a wee soft child. I really liked it and while it doesn't have the same level of bangers it just showcases how strong they were.
Some fast and slow ones. Overall a solid vibe.
Jack and Meg get weird - how is their least cohesive album still this good?
This album is like going out for your first beer at a university pub. The pub is grimy, and you’re not sure if the glass your beer came in had been cleaned before your drink is poured. It wasn’t expensive though, and the people you’re with seem used to this experience, so you act like you don’t mind either. This crowd is a far cry from the people you’re used to from home. Back home you’d go to an overpriced waterfront bar filled with St Cuths and Dio girls dressed in expensive skirts and tops, armed with their dad’s credit card and an elitist opinion that they were hotter and therefore better than everyone else in the bar. Here, girls are wearing track pants and Kathmandu puffer jackets. Only the stupidest women would wear heels in this place, the grotty floor was best handled in some Etnies skaters. You are in jeans and a collared shirt, and you feel like an idiot because you are overdressed compared to the t-shirts and hoodies that surround you. The jukebox is loaded with a bizarre selection of underground hip-hop, heavy metal and 80s synth pop. There’s no tvs showing the rugby which was the entire point of going to the pub in the first place, but you had a good night and got pissed as bits for only $45.
Good album, few highlights but Jack White's voice just isn't for me. 4/5
A real surprise, a wonderful album. "Nurse" is fantastic.
Üpriski isikupärane rokkalbum. Mulle kohati istub, kohati mitte. Vahepeal viskab see marimba või kõlapulkade või misiganes pillimäng üle, aga siin on päris lahedaid rokikäike ka. 3.75/5
There are some real bangers on this album and some songs that are just meh. Overall, a fun listen.
Excellent
Nice album, a couple of good songs, a few suffering from poor production and a bit amateurish musicianship. But way better than jacks solo music.
The album reminded me of my teenage years in high school. I have to admit, listening through. It was somewhat embarrassing as I experienced visions of myself completely enthralled in The White Stripes and emulating and attempting to be B Jack White essentially but regardless, I still love this album. It’s maybe the middle child of all of their albums I think it’s the Album that goes underappreciated, but I think the softer moments on this album are the strongest comparative to maybe other albums where the highlights are the the big songs, the hits, etc. but I feel like this album shines in the smaller moments so the piano ballads I think his writing is strongest in those moments so yeah.
Maybe not my favourite white Stripes album, but still pretty good.
This one was much better than White Blood Cells. A few stand out monster hits. Jack at his near best.
2 piece bands are bullshit
Better than White Blood Cells. It's a 3.5/5 for me. (I still think that TWS are overrated)
Great discovery for me. Again, sounds innovative, lots of different sonorities, good use of the piano, electric and acoustic guitar, the telephone (😅). I'll get back to this one. Red rain sounds like a rock opera !
Great album. Mix of hard rock and softer rock sounds, even some country and bluegrass styles mixed in. Notable tracks include Blue Orchid, My Doorbell, Little Ghost, Forever For Her, The Denial Twist, Take Take Take, As Ugly As I Seem, Red Rain.
Dynamic rock album
Meg is such a vibe. Opens strong, ebs and flows, solid album
In this album as White Stripes sound may sounded predictable already,Jack White plays with different technique, replacing electric guitar with piano, mandolin, and acoustic guitar on most songs,as his usual riffs are also replaced by a more rhythmic approach.Let alone his experimentation with marimba in 2 songs. Songs that intrigued me: The Nurse, quite experimental with marimba, piano, snare bursts and sparse guitar.Artful. My Doorbell, innovative singing,Beatles vibes.great soulful, bluesy piano playing. Forever For Her(Is Over For Me),nice vibes from the beginning with guitar, piano and marimba!Genius. Little Ghost is a country song with a mandolin! How creative can they get from that? The Denial Twist, power R'n'R blues! This is funky as hell!Nice video as well. White Moon, great lyrics and bursts keeps it highly interesting.Outstanding piano.Abrupt ending as in most songs. Instict Blues, not much of a Blues fan,but this is fire!Hendrix vibes.I can ''see'' them smashing the guitar at the end! Passive Manipulation, great singing with a meaning intervention. Take,Take,Take.Absolutely fantastic song.As soon as you feel bored, you get a change of rhythm in the ''take, take, take''lines. As Ugly As I Seem has great acoustic guitar playing rhythmically along with percussion only but alas my head was boping the whole time. Red Rain, hard rocking playing bluesy guitar and a bicycle bell?Hell yeah! Some progressive vibes also in the singing? No? Creative and innovative as hell, kept my interest throughout except 2 songs!Out of 13!Fairly they won the Grammy that year. 4/5
Although I like this album a lot (and bought it!), I'm not that surprised to read it was dropped from later editions of the book. If you've already got Elephant and White Blood Cells, then the White Stripes are pretty well represented on this list. That being said, this has some great songs and I like that they are trying a different sound.
Loved this beginning to end.
Love this one for nostalgia reasons - came out when I was in Russia and went to see them on this tour in Moscow.
Lošiji od dva prethodna i dalje jako dobar
I like the White Stripes. This is slightly atypical for them, what with the marimbas, etc., but it's still just as listenable. Perhaps not quite their best, but a solid high four.
3.5/5
A fantastic album. I have The White Stripes throughout my playlist, but I've never sat down and listened to so many of their songs in sequence. I've never realized just how simple yet experimental their songs really are. These tracks have some of the most basic drums I've ever heard, nothing particularly special about the guitar, and the singing isn't particularly beautiful to me. However, each and every track has a very strange assortment of sounds. The White Stripes really shows absolutely no fear of experimentation on this album, and it really created some interesting combinations. I'm going to give this album a 4/5 but I really enjoyed about 50% of the songs, and absolutely despised the other 50%. Hell sometimes I loved 50% of a song, and hated the other 50%. What the hell were they thinking when they wrote doorbell? I can tell, they were thinking about the doorbell ringing, and when you're gonna ring it. Over and over again. The better question, why did I enjoy that song? Overall The White Stripes have me questioning my sanity and whether or not you should just slam random sounds into a loop, record singing over it, add a few strums and beats here and there, and call it a song. I don't know how they do it, but I thoroughly enjoyed that mish-mash experience. 4/5
The opening hit "Blue Orchid" wakes one up for a fun and diversified album. Not that iconic as "Elephant" but in total much better than "White Blood Cells". Because of a few weaker songs it makes a weak four stars album for me. 3,5
This album is better than Elephant and it's not even close. Mad that this is their FIFTH album but it oozes the coolness that White Stripes (and Jack obvs) bring. Blue Orchid is a banger of an opening track too.
Insanely good to start but by the end gets ever so slightly repetitive. Fantastic album though
A classic, used to be obsessed when I was a kid!
Look, I love Meg and Jack, but this is not essential listening. Not even close. The piano adds just a lil extra where needed, Jack's nasal voice is the voice of a generation and those understated drums tie the place together. Good, not great.
molto forse troppo blues e grassroots, meno aggressivo di elephant e icky thump
It was good, some of their very strong songs overall very enjoyable
While Elephant remains the pinnacle of The White Stripes' discography, Get Behind Me Satan marks the onset of a gradual decline. The production, though polished, feels slightly overdone compared to their earlier, raw recordings. There's an obvious ambition to replicate the success of "Seven Nation Army" with "Blue Orchid", but it falls somewhat short. The album is well-crafted and consistent, but it ultimately feels like a rehash of previous ideas, lacking the same spark as their earlier work. However, "My Doorbell" and "The Denial Twist" have stood the test of time and remain staples in my playlist.
I never get tired of Jack White. Clever lyrics, clever arrangements, and I enjoy the bombastic approach to the classic rock ‘n’ roll format.
I thought Red Rain was a true highlight of the album. Doorbell has always been a favorite MP3 also, just so jolly and catchy. Im super stoked they will be inducted into the rock n roll hall of fame soon by Conan Obrien whom hosted their last performance on his final show in 2009. Great album, catchy, poppy, always rocky but with some quiet intimate moments too. Id give this an 8 out of 10.
Back in my 20s, a group of us were out on a "12 pubs of Christmas" pub crawl. Things had (expectedly) gotten a little drunken, and the whole group ended up having a serious shouty argument over whether Meg White was a good drummer or not. It got so heated that we split up over our differences, moved to different tables, glaring and scowling across the bar at each other, no longer on talking terms. Of course, we forgot about it all by the next pub, but for the record, I was firmly sitting at the "Meg is a great drummer" table. "Get Behind Me Satan" might not be as iconic as the previous two albums, but it still has all the energy and brilliance of a White Stripes album, this time with more piano and xylophone. And that energy has a lot to do with Meg's punk style drumming. The whole point of The White Stripes was to pair back music to three core elements (vocals, guitar/piano and drums), and this raw approach is what made their music so interesting, and, especially at a time of heavily polished and over-produced music, very refreshing. I could talk a lot about Jack White, his brilliant songwriting, musicality and, frankly, his genius, but this album in particular is energised and leveled up by Meg's symbol-happy drumming.
I liked it
Standouts: Blue Orchid My doorbell The denial twist
Not the best White Stripes record but a fun one anyway.
From a first listen, it is clear that this album has been very influential. Bands like The Black Keys, Mumford and Sons, and others have taken inspiration from this album. I didn't dislike any single track, and while the album felt somewhat repetitive, each track added to the album as a whole. I really wanted to give this a 5, but it was a little too repetitive for such a rating. 4/5.
I know that one song by The White Stripes. Now I know a lot more and they were mostly really good. This album is right up my alley. There was a solid variety of songs as well, whether it was loud and heavy or soft. I will definitely come back to this album after listening to their other albums whether they are featured on this list or not. The White Stripes could become one of my favorite bands.
The greatest rock band of my generation, with one of their biggest commercially successful albums. What’s not to like about this album, really just one thing and that’s “little ghost”. It’s just a personal taste thing but I hate it and I can’t stand it. It is always an immediate skip. But that being said, despite not liking that song, it happens to be a great example of the variety on this album. Like there’s the classic “white stripes” sound that flows throughout the album, but there’s also pretty bold swings like “the nurse” and “I’m lonely (but I ain’t that lonely yet)”. There’s even a really cool interlude near the end of the album that I enjoy. And I don’t normally even comment on interludes which says something. Really the songs I was the least interested in were the songs that “sounded like white stripes”. For example, I find the most forgettable song on the album to be “instinct blues”. But I digress, this is a CLASSIC album. This album is easily one of their best and a culturally important rock album which is saying something considering it came out in the early 2000s.
Super!
This was cool to revisit because I remember when it came out and I was a young teen and I thought Blue Orchid was soooo coooool. Now that I've lived some life I appreciate the musicality more. Enjoyed!
More like a 3.8 but certainly a very good album. There aren't many better openings to an album that this
Fab group....fab album....fab songs.....just FAB! Love them!
good Album but not my favorite White Stripes album
From the opening chords of "Blue Orchid" this one comes out blasting! I dig The White Stripes, so this was a welcome addition after suffering thru weird experimental and boring jazz albums the last few days. They're cooking with gas and rocking the house with "Blue Orchid", "My Doorbell", "Little Ghost" & "The Denial Twist", all of which get radio play. Then you add in glue tracks like "Forever For Her", "The Nurse" "I'm Lonely" & "Take Take Take". Not sure I can put this in my Top 1001 though with the weak second half of of this release. There are some true throwaway songs, even for a fan like me, including "Instinct Blues" & "Passive Manipulation", and weak filler songs like "White Moon", "As Ugly As I Am", "Red Rain". Overall, this is worth listening to, breaks some new ground and has the radio hits. The listen count is impressive, no song has under 3M listens and "Blue Orchid" tops 160M, "Doorbell" is at 50M and "Denial" is at 40M, this is a popular album. 3.5 stars but I'm going with 4 out of respect.
Classic album from the white stripes!
Definitely sounds like a white stripes album. They make good music, and definitely have a very recognizable tone/vibe. Easy to pop on
Great, straightforward rock and roll album.
Loved it!
A fun time was had by all. 4/ 5
Music that draws you in and you listen to a deeper song inside. Creative apex for the duo
One of the best of 2005, The White Stripes prove once again they can make noise sound like art. Piano = joy. Smash-smash = mild headache. But overall a solid album from a great time in my life. 4/5.
Cracking album with some real bangers on it
This is the 3rd White Stripes album from this list that I have reviewed. I really liked the first two, White Blood Cells and Elephant, and I really hadn’t listened to the band before, outside of the theme from Napoleon Dynamite. After listening to the first song on this album, Blue Orchid, I didn’t think I would like this record…but as it progressed, I found that I really enjoyed it. I will have to listen to Blue Orchid again as I appear to be in the minority. I have come to the conclusion, however, that I really do like the White Stripes. 4 solid stars.
It's a fun album, with a great opener. It's sort of a fun take on blues I find. Funny to hear Meg sing on the one track, I never realised she did on this record. Still wonder a lot about what happened to Meg. They were definitely one of the most iconic bands ever.
really awesome song elements; hooking; cool lyrics
I like the White Stripes Elephant is my favorite album hopefully that shows up in the list
Probably White Stripes at their pinnacle.
Love The White Stripes but never really listened with a critical ear. Powerful in its simplicity even though we’re beyond the earlier rawness at this point.
People crack on Meg for drumming like a dinosaur, but else can you do when Jack is blasting out caveman rock at epic intensity? White Stripes just want to get to rocking and they don’t wanna complicate it! BANG BANG BANG! THUD THUD BANG YYYEEEEAAAAHHHHH!!!
I know that this is far from The White Stripes' best, but I will never understand the insane amount of hate that this album gets. It's still got so many of my favourite moments in their discography, Jack is still showing off his amazing guitar skills, and Meg's drumming is as punchy as ever (Meg slander will absolutely NEVER be tolerated, fuck you she's one of the greatest drummers of all time). "Ooo ahh I don't like the production, ooo ahh too smooth, The White Stripes need to have a more raw and gritty sound" NO THEY DON'T, they are actually allowed to do what they want with their sound, and something I love about this album is how they have a much more polished production style, they use more instruments like pianos, but it's still unmistakably them. Just the opening few seconds on Blue Orchid as smooth and slick as that song is, still sounds so White Stripes. And is that not the best way that a band can expand their sound? By changing it in a way that shows them trying things that they wouldn't typically be thought to do, but in the process still staying true to what makes their sound so iconic? Because that's exactly what's happening on this album, but for some reason people just completely ignore that.
This is my least favorite White Stripes album, but it's still worth listening to every now and again. I love Little Ghost. 4/5
Good stuff. I way underrated this album apparently. It's real solid.
This is a good album, but not a great album. There are a few misses (My Doorbell springs to mind), and a few fun ones (Little Ghost must be the inspiration of Wolves of Glendale's "Olivia"). But overall, White Blood Cells is a better album by The White Stripes.
Very good album. Solid rocker, couple of weird songs. Lyrically interesting.
Always thought this album was lesser then some of the others in the White Stripes catalog, even though it was probably my most listened to. Coming back to it, I think it is just as strong. Has an epic first half, tapers off a little, but so good and listenable
There's a guy on Instagram who makes videos slightly parodying artists under the names of e.g. "What Pearl Jam Sounds Like to People Who Don't Like Pearl Jam" or "What The White Stripes Sounds Like to People Who Don't Like The White Stripes". That's what a lot of this sounded like to me. And yet at the end I was left with the question, wait, do I like The White Stripes? Although given that none of the huge "hits" were on this, now I'm a little nervous that every White Stripes album is going to be on here.
Ingen Seven Nation Army och verkligen inte i närheten av The Elephant. Det börjar bli underligt med alla band vars sämre material hamnar på listan. Men det kan aldrig vara dåligt när The Whites är inblandade. En fyra
Name a better riff than Blue Orchid
- very good album - not exactly what i expected, i thought itd be more gothic based on the cover - very clearly inspired by led zeppelin and other bands from that era at least in some songs - others were more upbeat with a fun tone which i enjoyed very much - it sounded empty at some points due to no bassist - a stand out would “forever for her (is over for me)” - i would listen to the album again if not just the songs
I don't think it's possible for The White Stripes to possibly ever miss. There's a great mix of upbeat and mellow tracks here. I enjoyed the energetic tracks and didn't really enjoy the mellower ones. Favourite Track(s): Blue Orchid Least Favourite Track(s): Little Ghost, White Moon
Bit up and down as all white stripes albums are, but so many crackers on here. Some of my favourite songs on from them here
I won't claim it's all bangers ("little ghost" followed by the timeless "denial twist" is a wild sequence) but when it's good it's incredible
They do the retro sound really well, no idea Doorbell was their song
I get why ppl didn't care for this album as they were expecting more The White Stripes. But it's fun and quirky and an interesting listen. Fav song: Blue Orchid
