Reviews (page 4 of 12)

Good album, though not their best. Love Blue Orchid, The Denial Twist, Instinct Blues, and Take Take Take. Good variety of sounds too.

No private session used for Spotify. I love The White Stripes, this isn't my favorite of theirs, but it still rocks!

Como que la de los créditos de Paranorman es de los White Stripes

Very good album. Some all time classic songs 4/5

Other than the stadium anthem and the music press ramblings about the Whites, I’m not really aware of actual Striped Music. This was a good ear opener.

Great band. Solid album

With every White Stripes album feeling like a mixed bag, this particular collection of songs is one that I think will really grow on the listener. I like the blend of lo-fi songwriting and the more accessible punch of their previous album. Overall, it's a very strange vibe with some well crafted songs. I'm further convinced that Jack White was always reaching to recreate something akin to Zeppelin III.

Not in the top 3 albums of the white stripes. Hits outshine the totality of the album.

Another White Stripes album! The entrance with Blue Orchid really caught me in. It has an interesting texture to it that seems almost kind of futuristic and synthlike with whatever effect it has on it along with that beating heart like drumbeat staying steady throughout. Then with the track The Nurse, a surprising difference with soft mallets and piano (and crash cymbals) really shows just how diverse The White Stripes are. The speed up and build up really get you on the edge of your seat with what will happen next. It doesn't go anywhere far, unfortunately, and ends very suddenly. Then there is My Doorbell- very Robert Plant like vocals and a groovy sounding song. With piano, shaker, and drums. Nice! I liked it. The vocals also seem distant at times- and I assume that is a stylistic choice for the more garage rock feel, although I'm unsure how to feel about it. The album seems to become more marimba and piano centered as it goes on. This isn't neccessarily a bad thing, but more guitar would have been nice considered Jack White can come up with catchy, bluesy riffs. A few songs seem quite filler to me, such as Little Ghost. The album also starts to become less interesting around halfway through to me, as I think the piano is overused for a duet where one of the members is a guitarist. Overall, I enjoyed the variety of genres, especially at the start, but my interest started wearing out around the halfway point. I would have preferred more rock n roll sounding tracks like Blue Orchid over bluesy piano with crash cymbals scattered around. The last few tracks pushed it from a 3.5 to a 4/5. 4/5 Favourite songs: Blue Orchid My Doorbell The Denial Twist As Ugly As I Seem

Álbum bem legal, momentos variados. Celest Phoenixcall.

Although I only really enjoy a little more than half of this album, I really really enjoy that more than half!

Standout Songs: Blue Orchid Little Ghost The Denial Twist Instinct Blues Red Rain Pretty solid album. I have heard a few songs from this band before but nothing off this album, although it has a similar vibe to stuff I’ve heard.

Hard to decide between 4 and 5, but I'd say "not a classic"

Great album, really easy to listen to and enjoy. Use of a marimba was not expected …. Kinda cool. Also, Meg White is criminally underrated as a drummer. She’s more important to the White Stripes sound than people give her credit

Fucking love the White Stripes, and this is some of their best work.

Intro to Blue Orchid is just sexy - the solid drum line, jacks sexy vocals the riff of guitar - honestly nailed it. To paraphrase the song “how dare you” do such a song as the intro to the album. I’m a fan of the white strips and of this album. Very enjoyable listen and introduction to some new songs The nurse was a slow build and a tease of the guitar throughout The Denial Twist for a new favourite too. Enjoyed Instinct Blues can see the Black Keys inspiration from this song. There were a few misses on the album little ghost was a shocker. Also I was less of a fan of the slower moving songs including White Moon.

Fun album! I don't think I really have much to say about it though, other than that I enjoyed it and have enjoyed it for many years.

I don't mind the direction they took with this album. Red Rain is the one song more reminiscent of older material. Without their usual noiser approach this album feels more homey, something you may find in a southern or Midwest dance hall as apposed to an underground blues / garage bar.

Sometimes found the lyrics too repetitive, but enjoyed most of them and liked the instrumentation. Would listen again. Thought there was a good variation across the album. Fav song: The Denial Twist Least fav: Red Rain

In the last 3 years I really became a fan of Jack White with some of his solo albums, but never actually listened to The White Stripes, other than Seven Nation Army. It was kind of a given how much I was going to like this. And I'd completely forgotten about 'My Doorbell'. Shocking I know.

I liked this one quite a lot. Hadn’t heard anything from the white stripes besides seven nation army. Am a big fan or alt/indie rock, and this one delivered. Didn’t like the bluesy tracks as much, but was immediately hooked by the first song. Also liked my doorbell, denial twist, and as ugly as I seem.

Hmm I was never a fan of the White Stripes, but this effort struck me as much more interesting. The outsider ethos seems integrated, not even potentially poseur-produced, the practiced simplicity openly inviting. He could seem show-offy to me. Not here.

I like this album and it’s got some bangers on it but most of it I’ve forgotten a few hours later. It’s somewhere between a 3 and 4 but because I would definitely listen to it again I’m going to be generous. I always love Meg’s drumming too.

Absolutely loved this album. It had sound diversity and totally rocked my time in the kitchen yesterday.

One of the greatest drumming records of my lifetime

Excellent. Never much of a fan, but can't deny the talent.

Almost a perfect album

A fun album. Very enjoyable to listen to. Blue Orchid was probably my favorite song off this one. Maybe not the White Stripes best, but certainly still worth a listen.

pretty good! I can see why they're popular. 4/5

Throwback, love the heavy stuff and the lighter brighter sounds as well, 4-5

A lot of people dismiss the take that Jack White is one of the best guitarists but I’ll be damned if the man isn’t creative as hell. He is 100% one of the best

Such a distinctive sound. Theatrical and thrilling. A solid album.

Very innovative and catchy tunes. As always expect the unexpected from Jack and Meg. Fun and provocative.

8/10 pretty great! not my favorite White Stripes album, but I sure did enjoy it!

Enjoyable record. Worth noting though that this ended the first edition of the book but was removed in later editions

This record is so emblematic of a time and space in music. Punk was becoming pop, so pop had to become punk. This is one of the best-sounding records recorded for under $10,000. It transcends the gritty, crusty, bluesy garage rock of their previous material with bits of psychedelia, americana, and gospel. The piano on this album fills out the sound in a very organic way and lends some sophistication to the White Stripes' simple sound. Standouts are "Blue Orchid", "My Doorbell", and "I'm Lonely (But I Ain't That Lonely Yet)"

We get it, you don't have a bass player

Garde son son de garage, tout en se faisant plus expérimental et éclaté

For as good as they were at it, the first 4 White Stripes albums had a pretty simple thing going on. Their powerful, scuzzy and loud interpretation of blues rock simply rocked *hard* (and their impeccable eye for aesthetic didn't hurt). As such, Get Behind Me Satan feels like a very intentional series of left turns and odd tangents. We kick off with Blue Orchid which very much feels like a normal White Stripes song, and a particularly good one too. It is catchy, groovy and heavier than you'd think, and starting here feels like a very intentional play to lull the listener into a sense of security. Immediately afterwards, we get The Nurse, which is *very* far removed from a normal White Stripes song, maybe more-so than anything else here. This song is built around a marimba part which is occasionally punctuated with a noise freak-out, and I think it's awesome. My Doorbell jerks us once more, into a piano and percussion led song with some incredibly catchy vocal melodies. With these songs, we experience most of the territory Get Behind Me Satan Takes us to. And this was probably a good idea, by defining a ball field to play in with these new textures, The White Stripes still give us a really cohesive sounding album. Not to say there aren't surprises from here on out. Little Ghost is pure, earnest Americana executed without an ounce of cheese and it's a highlight here. White Moon and I'm Lonely (But I Ain't That Lonely Yet are pleasant, well written piano ballads. Also, there *are* some more conventional White Stripes songs here: Instinct Blues, along with Red Rain, and the aforementioned Blue Orchid are all highlights. The scarcity of this sort of song here makes me think they made sure that any they attempted hit. And these three songs *hit* especially surrounded by chiller sounding material. I think these songs along with a lot of material here honestly, are really held together by Meg. Her thundering stomp really gives this album some impact. I think every song here is pretty great, and aside from some minor nitpicks and maybe a song or two I could have done without, there really isn't much for me to complain about here, and I could see myself spinning this again. The White Stripes played around a little here, but I think they really stuck the landing.

Quite nice

More varied and interesting than expected. The mallet percussion and piano all over the album really help. 4 stars

Much better than the other White Stripes album on the list.

Raw fun energy

4.5 stars. I'm not sure why I was never more into the White Stripes when this album came out. I liked the singles, but the songs were 'just' good - they didn't have that extra special something to really draw me in. Revisiting this album in 2025, however, is different because I can really appreciate how good the White Stripes were, especially as compared to a lot of current popular rock bands, who don't much appeal to me. These songs are relatively simple, with only a few parts at any given time, and many of them end abruptly - nothing here is unnecessary. The drums are crisp and clean, there's a great range of vocal styles from Jack White, and each song just comes together easily. This is the kind of stuff that reminds me that music can be innovative and exciting without a million tracks building on each other or using overcomplicated song structures. It's the type of stuff that makes music feel open and accessible and makes me want to make it myself.

Pretty good not bad

Great album. Had no idea Jack White would be playing piano through most of it.

pretty interesting blend of genres and instruments

It'll be tough for me to give anything less than a 4 for a Jack White project.

Such a unique sound, such a great opener. This is White Stripes 🤘🏻 Nice variety, great songs, experimental, unique and engaging. Feels there is something new in every song, whilst keeping the distinct White Stripes sound. Great video for ‘The Denial Twist’ I hadn’t seen before as well. Very enjoyable listen with a good amount variety. Looking forward to the next ones

Get behind me Satan is a wild name for an album but this album would make him proud.

Sólido, full nostalgia. No le doy 5 estrellas porque la versión de los caminantes blancos de GOT es más fuerte.

Muy bueno, es una banda que me gustan 2 o 3 temas, genial para conocerlos

Favorite: The Denial Twist

simpel en toch goed... meer moet een mens soms niet hebben

I generally like The White Stripes but have never ventured too far into their discography. This album was a shock after having listened to just their big singles. It was so diverse in sound and feel and has me wanting to explore more from The White Stripes. Jack White is a talent, of course. Meg White is an underrated drummer in that she has an unmistakable sound that drives many of their songs.

Pretty good.

Not sure if this is more progressive or self indulgence. Still has some great songs on it. A generous 4.

The white stripes draw you in and keep you engaged , the lyrics are witty the instrument make playful and musicianship is on display

It swings and it rocks...

A decent, solid record

Held my attention the entire time and the amount of variation was a big part of that. For not really having any of the hits I already knew, I really enjoyed this album. Worthy of a four and something I’ll come back to eventually.

Wow! Fun rock! Who knew. Detroit rules. FO SHO

As a White Stripes fan from the beginning, this album really stood out when it was released. Elephant perfected their style, it couldn't be topped. Get Behind Me Satan takes a side step and adds a lot more dimensions to the White Stripes sound. It's not their best overall, but I find it too be very relevant in their catalog.

★★★★½

Happy 20th anniversary! I should listen to this more often than I do. I should listen to the White Stripes more often than I do. That's on me.

Literally spent all of last week listening to this album in my class with my year 6 pupils as it was celebrating its 20th anniversary. Blue Orchid is a banging start and it's pretty good tracks all the way through with a good range of tempo and musicianship on show. Actually prefer this to Elephant and their others.

Pretty good

Perfect start to the week. Jack White is my all time favorite musician. However, I have to say, generally, the albums he's been a part of are very rarely perfect as a whole. There's always some stuff on his albums I don't absolutely love, and this album is no exception. However, as usual, the songs that are really good here are some of my favorite songs of all time. In particular, "Blue Orchid" "The Denial Twist" and "Take, Take, Take" are my favorite songs on this album, and rightfully so. They all freaking slap and are extremely earwormy. Every band that Jack has been a part of is golden, The White Stripes, The Raconteurs, and his solo career are all consistently great, so I hope we can get at least one of each if not more for this project. It's always nice to go back to his early stuff so we can get some of the ever reclusive Meg. I hope she's doing well. Oh, and I LOVE this album art. The posing, simple but effective story telling, and clever use of a 3 color scheme are all very interesting to look at.

The evolution of the white stripes. Great songs. I would share with most people

Dude can shred. Love that you know it’s him from the sound of the guitar

gets kinda sloggy in the back middle half but take take take saves it

It’s a good White Stripes album. I’m not a big fan but it’s still pretty good.

Its the stripes? 7 nation army. That song that's at every sporting event ever now. Who doesn't know some of this. Jack white is a sick player and his voice fits the bluesy thing that he loves so much. But Meg white is insane. She rules. I think its not even close to the same thing without her. She uses everything she can. I love it. She even sings a teeny tiny bit on this record too. Its very good

the "less electric guitar" album. blood cells, elephant, and de stijl may be superior, but this was still realer, weirder, and better than most music coming out at that time, and frankly, most since. they still had the juice, baby. plus, we know what not having the juice sounds like because we have jack’s solo work since, oh, let’s say, lazaretto. his most recent album got some plaudits, but it didn’t stand up to my bullshit detector. the shambling piano, acoustic guitar, vibraphone, and mandolin of side one make the midpoint "instinct blues" hit harder. then these two sisterbrotherhusbandwives put all that innate satanic horniness behind them (“even the strawberries get it, so why don’t you?”) with a side two collection of mostly sweet and mostly acoustic songs, the relapse of "red rain" excepted. i don’t care that this has been dropped from the list because this list is sometimes dog crap, and i don’t care that there are perhaps better white stripes albums on here. this wasn’t some death knell where they outpaced meg’s abilities. every song hits, and it’s nice to have a fully formed change of pace from one of the greatest bands in my lifetime.

My first White Stripes encounter on this list. I’d never listened to this whole album before, and you know? It’s pretty good! Maybe great? Certainly not perfect, but I dunno, as someone ambivalent towards this band, maybe they can do better, I guess I’ll see since reviews mention 2 or 3 other albums coming up. I did used to enjoy Icky Thump back in the day. If this was the sole Stripes album on here, I think it’d be a worthy choice. Still, probably not a must-listen.

This was a real treat. I did not realize how varied of music the white stripes put out. Thought it was all garage alternative rock stuff. But this was delightful

I was genuinely startled by the first guitar hit on The Nurse, don't if that's ever happened to me when I've listened to music. They're able to cut their own path and respect the many rock traditions they're working in without being a purely derivative band like their fellow Michiganders Greta Van Fleet. I've always thought of the White Stripes like Detroit-style pizza, hometown heroes fiercely defended because they're local and it must always be Detroit vs Everybody. However, unlike Detroit-style pizza, I've sampled this and found it actually matches the hype.

Jack White's talent shines through a diverse set with plenty of crunch. I really enjoyed coming back to this album

Great junks.

A lot of different instruments were used throughout, which kept things interesting. Nice album overall.

Good album!

It’s a joy to go back to this album after so many years! As I’ve said in at least one previous review, I love this band, and they opened a lot of doors for me musically. I can remember delivering pizzas, listening to the entire discography on repeat. And while GBMS was always the least played, in some ways, it stands out from the rest of the bands catalog as being maybe the only time they truly experimented outside of their comfort zone. And while not every song here hits like on previous albums, GBMS is a breath of fresh air for the band. And it’s neat to see what Jack would take from this album and apply to his future solo attempts.

Like I know it's not this good, but I like it

Oh wow. So this is no way as good a record as some of The White Stripes, or even a few of Jack White's other projects' records - it misses the kind of set of bangers that create cultural shifts - ooh oh oh oh oh ooooh oooh.. kind of thing. But that's because the standards The White Stripes have created are so high for themselves, that a genuinely sweet, short, and honest record does stand as high in regards as the rest of their body of work. Yet Blue Orchid inspires me, and quite a few of the songs are memorable if not super-pop-hits - and this is where the genius shines through - good song writing, well performed and heart felt. Not to mention the most awesome badly played solo in Instinct Blues... you can feel the emotion aout of the choked guitar - when you Jack White can knock out any blues solo perfectly out of the park. Ok I sound like a fanboy, but this album was a revelation.

I enjoyed this. VERY different for the most part to the White Stripes I know, entirely informed by Elephant / Seven Nation Army. I liked the creativeness and the stripped back nature of it, could really appreciate the drums and guitar when it made an appearance. Would have been a 3.5 but more a 4 than a 3.

Very different at times to previous album. I think this has more depth as sometimes old Jack can be a repeat monster. Certainly some classic songs in there with distinctive sound but I enjoy the broader pace and sounds. Not going to blow anyone away but above average.

This is the album where The White Stripes tried to run away from being The White Stripes. Trading in the guitars, for pianos and folk instrumentation, but still delivery quality material. I know the overall view on this release wasn't very positive, but I have a strong attachment to it as it was the first album from the band I heard. To this day, I still play "Blue Orchid" in my head every time I want to count two/two and a half minutes. However, I can't say I like it as much as the two preceding it. Key tracks: Blue Orchid My Doorbell Forever for Her (Is Over for Me) Little Ghost The Denial Twist

Yeeees - this is such a great album!

Very good album. Interesting lyrics, musically diverse. Fun to listen to.

First time ever taking time to listen to jack white. A lot more variety than I was expecting. Exceeded expectations a lot.

I have listened to this before but not for a long time .Only a few tracks stand out in comparison to other earlier albums but it is still a solid listen .

I remember when this came out, I wasn't really into it, but it grew on me, and now it's probably my 2nd or maybe 3rd favorite White Stripes album. I like all the weird shit they tried on this one. 4/5

I do like the White Stripes. They're very much outside of my wheelhouse, but for some reason, they work.

Very cool. Ofc i knew only one song from them and tracks from this album differ from it, and I wouldn't say that I like them more, but still they're worth listening. I really really liked the vocals here. A little bit of weird songs here, but overall very unusual rock album experience. It's sound i so unique, not like anything I've heard before. Also the cover on this album is so beautiful. Songs saved:7/13

I loved this when it came out - I think I might still have the CD stashed away somewhere. It mostly holds up for me.

i used to listen to early white stripes all the time when i was a teenager but never really paid attention to this era apart from the singles (ugh my doorbell is still so good). i feel like i don’t like their piano stuff as much as stuff like elephant etc but this was still really good and weird and fun. also it feels like it aged really well? like it doesn’t sound dated at all. so yeah this wasn’t my main great.

Actually really good

My doorbell !

Very funky!

I was always lukewarm on The White Stripes. Jack White is a fantastic guitarist and decent songwriter, but a lot of their stuff sounds pretty similar, with vocal lines and chord progressions that are sometimes indistinguishable from one song to the next. My favorite Jack White project is actually the indie supergroup The Raconteurs, which (as you might expect) are more sonically diverse and draw more on classic rock than the blues (Rich Kid's Blues from Consolers Of The Lonely is their magnum opus, IMO). That said, this was a solid release. There's some of that Jack White sonic repetitiveness, but there are also some diversions from this, most notably on the gospel-soaked closing track, I'm Lonely (But I Ain't That Lonely Yet).

This was fun. A very versatile album overall. The marimba sections weren’t the strongest, but the rest was thoroughly entertaining.

Great rock tunes. Catchy AF

A pretty solid record out of the Stripes, it’s got some really solid riffs here that feel very bluesy & 70s inspired, which work really well with the Stripes’ usual style, the piano on tracks like “I’m Lonely” also works really well as it also feels inspired from a similar era as the guitar work is, Jack’s vocals are also just as great as they usually are, having that perfect amount of 70s sleaze to them that I love, they sound really crispy which matches nicely with the music, there are a couple lesser tracks though, especially tracks 8 - 11, which are decent, but nothing great, especially compared to the best tracks here, which definitely brings down my overall enjoyment, but it’s still great for the most part, so it’s not too bad, still, not the best I’ve heard from them, but still enjoyable, as their records usually are.

Very strong songs on this album

Jack White is a tour de force in rock n roll for the 21st century....

Some fun tracks here. Jack’s vocals and guitar are solid. Meg’s drums are simple at best, but do the job. A fun listen, but not their best.

I really loved the rock songs but the ballads didn't really hit for me. Blue Orchid of course but I had never listened to take take take before. Overall a great listen

I had so much fun listening to the album dancing around the apartment. The songs were distinct which kept things exciting. I didn’t connect much with the lyrics and a few of the songs got a little annoying, so 1 star deducted for that. Would maybe listen again.

I actually enjoyed this a lot more than I thought I would

underrated and understated White Stripes album. First 6 tracks are fantastic, falters slightly in the second half

If punk rock was the 90's and the 00's and the 10's were pop, The White Stripes would be the gap. There music is new and innovative and therefore mainstream but at the same time takes influences from the rock n' roll era that make this such a great album. My only complaint is it was a bit too long and started to feel repetitive. Otherwise it was a great album, 4 stars for me. I am now a white stripes fan!

Trash pick up in the morning. Date night at night. Hell yeah Blue Orchid brings back a Taco Bell run with Cody

Not my favorite stripes album but good nonetheless. Blue orchid one of my all time favorites

I thought it was a good pop album. Nothing to crazy to wrote about I enjoyed the use of Marimba and other percussion equipment.

A lot to like here. I particularly liked "As Ugly As I Seem" and "I'm Lonely (But I Ain't That Lonely Yet). Neil Young all over that shit! 4

This is a fun White Stripes album. There’s less hard rock than some of their other albums, but there’s lots of loose folk rock and blues rock with nice production flourishes. What’s that mallet percussion that shows up on a lot of tracks? Xylophone? It adds a playful tone to the music. Okay, there’s still some hard rock on this album too. I guess what distinguishes the sound of this album is a sort of stage-y theatricality. I don’t know how else to describe it, but they sound like they’re performing in a small theatre rather than an arena. Highlights: “My Doorbell,” “The Denial Twist,” “Take, Take, Take”

This is a textbook 4 for me. I liked it, but i won't be returning anytime soon.

Bursting with creativity. More mature, a bit on the depressed side. Nothing seems to make Jack a happy boy this time around. Still shockingly spontaneous, off-putting, heavy, and inscrutable (for the most part) as anything they've done. Jack White seems to be seeking something. Or coming to terms that he won't ever find what he's looking for. That what this sounds like to me.

An interesting diversion from their usual sound enjoyable but not their absolute best 4*

Count me so very surprised. Based on the album art and look of the music videos I went into this dreading the experience, and found myself pleasantly surprised. Loved the piano heavy songs.

Call me pleasantly surprised, this album was really good! Going into it I was a little disdainful as I’m not really the biggest White Stripes fan, but I found myself through the whole album vibing along with pretty much every track. And it wasn’t just enjoyable but it was like actual quality music and lyrics and everything too. Really impressed and taken away by this record, good stuff.

Super solid white stripes album. Not their best but no complaints.

> the Beatles There was a time when I couldn't stand Jack White. His voice bothered me for some reason. This is the first time I've listened to anything he's done in at least a decade, other than his bond theme which I still say is bad, but something changed. This hit. It's great

2 songs worth saving for me!

Pretty fucking fantastic. I love how much they do with so little. Simple songs that sound so much more complex.

Some good tracks, but plenty that I skip. Still haven’t picked it up on vinyl for this reason. Better than most of White’s solo stuff, but that’s a pretty low bar.

Schöne melancholische Texte. Lädt zum sinnieren über das Leben ein.

Strong, challenging album. Kudos.

Not the best White Stripes record but it does again showcase his amazing guitar. And his vocals are pretty great too. Highlights: Blue Orchid, Little Ghost, My Doorbell, I’m Lonely

I like this but it's not my favorite White Stripes album. It doesn't have a stand out like 7 Nation or Fell in Love. It also loses steam at the end.

This isn't my favorite White Stripes album, but it's still a pretty good effort. It does get repetitive in some spots.

Good but a little repetitive

Ez dump. One of my favorite bands. 4.5

I love the White Stripes but was a little surprised this one made it into the list. It is a slight change of direction for them and the mix of styles makes it a slightly disjointed effort that is let down by some of the songs. This makes it less accessible than other albums. It has some great tracks namely: Blue Orchid, My Doorbell, and Take, take, take and all in all, another great album from the prolific Jack White.

This is probably a generic White Stripes review as I don’t really remember any of their albums being particularly different. For me, they’re great for a short hit of riffed up blues rock. It’s fun and never fails to improve my mood. And the usual weirder oddball numbers always worth a listen. Is it groundbreaking, yes in a simplistic way, but not in a way that makes me pick up an album with any regularity and wonder at its invention. Glad they existed though. And for those who gave up on Jack White’s solo career. Thoroughly recommend the recent ‘No name’ album; much more of a return to White Stripes vibe, and wonderfully meatier.

Did not listen that much to this album when it came out except for the singles. Didn't really like it in the beginning now, but it grew on me. Between 3 and 4 but leaning towards 4.

Starts off with the absolute banger Blue Orchid, then has a jarring cut to marimba in The Nurse which fits the vibe of the album better. I always like The White Stripes, but this one just doesn’t have the same ability to hook you in and keep your attention the same way a good riff can.

Back in the early 2000s, I went through a brief White Stripes phase, but by the time this album came out, I had already lost interest. I kept reading about how this was supposed to be a polarizing album that marked a bold stylistic shift, but honestly, I couldn’t get past how much it still sounds like everything else they’ve done. If there’s one thing you can say about The White Stripes, it’s their commitment to sounding exactly like themselves, so much so that when you hear a random track, it’s nearly impossible to tell which album or era it’s from. The only real evolution I noticed was in the production quality, which naturally improved as their fame grew. Other than that, this just felt like another White Stripes album, cut from the same cloth as the rest.

So good!

Loved this album when I was younger, it's still great, but I have to give it a 4 because of "Instinct Blues". That song really rubbed me the wrong way, though I love parts of it. The noodley part at the beginning is fine, it's that solo(?) in the middle that I really didn't like, and I can't imagine what possessed them to put that on the album. Otherwise great album, Little Ghost is a longtime favorite of mine, and over the runtime of the album I was just reminded of my teenage years several times.

Interesting

Experimental White Stripes.

I am not quite sure why, but I liked this album quite a lot. 4 stars or B.

This is about when Jack White really started to make weird music, and the oddness feels fresh. And, while the record is a bit all over the place, it works as a whole. 4.0/5.0: Great

Surprised at how much I like this album. Shows really good range of style.

White Stripes are interesting, the production value and instrumentation was novel at the time but seems like a forced hipster vibe with the last two decades to reflect. In the end the songwriting is very good and it all feels honest.

Not their best album but good

4.5 - very close to a 5, this one's a goodie that gets stronger as it goes along

The thing about the White Stripes is that they're not exactly heavy w/ riff but they are heavy w/ groove. That's a major shoutout to Meg White. I'm not convinced by every song here, but heralded by 'Instinct Blues,' which feels like a reworking of Cole Porter's 'Let's Do It, Let's Fall in Love' - now: 'well, the crickets get it, / And the ants get it'; then: 'Birds do it, bees do it / Even educated fleas do it' - this album is a successful amalgam of bookish resolve and bare power: 'The one that you're trusting suspiciously dusting the sill'; 'And the truth, well you know there's no stoppin' it / And the boat you know she's still rockin' it.' And vulnerability on 'As Ugly As I Seem' and 'I'm Lonely (But I Ain't That Lonely Yet).' Doorbells, too, ringing or unrung.

they were good. He's better now.

Get Behind Me Satan is what happens when The White Stripes get tired of being everybody’s favorite garage rock saviors and decide to kick their own sound down a flight of stairs — marimbas, busted pianos, and all. The guitars don’t disappear, they just sit in the corner nursing a hangover while Jack and Meg throw a vaudeville seance. Blue Orchid still kicks like a mule, but My Doorbell and The Nurse prove you don’t need a fuzz pedal to get weird. Is it their best album? Not even close. But it’s the sound of two musicians torching their own playbook, dancing through the wreckage, and daring you to follow. Call it uneven, call it indulgent, but boring? Not for a second.

Love the Stripes! Wasn't too familiar with this album but listened and was not disappointed.

She Can Be So Cold, Pacewon and Mr. Green). Defenitivt en fyra. Kanske starka. Men hade nog behövt lyssna lite mer. Vilket jag kommer att göra!!!

Love me some White Stripes. This isn't my fave album but still scratches the itch

Really solid album. Really love the White Stripes and hearing this again made me appreciate the eclectic instrument choices.

Fuzzy guitar, thick riffs, loud and splashy cymbals..... alot to like here! Still a good album.

Enjoyed this - lots of guitar work. Nice vocals too.

I saw this tour. Was awesome.

Favourite tracks - My Doorbell, The Denial Twist, Take, Take, Take

Love this album. Jack White slightly wandering outside the self-imposed White Stripes template but the bangers are still that loud sparse style. Blue Orchid, My Doorbell, Little Ghost all great

3.5/5. Good, just what I'd expect from The White Stripes.

Fuck me sideways, that was really good. This is the second album of theirs I've had on this list, and both were significantly better than I expected. I had a re-listen right after it finished the first time, and it was just as good second time around. I preferred it to White Blood Cells marginally.

I liked this album a lot. The same thing I have said about a few albums here recently is still true. The first track made me think "Okay, I have heard this before", but then the full album was really quite enjoyable. I think I prefer the simpler, softer songs from White Stripes. I especially liked the marimbas on "Nurse". You don't hear enough alt percussion in rock, yaknow?

The good songs are really good and the not good songs are....not good. For the most part, the songs were good. Some really good rock tunes on here, including some popular classics (that's right, White Stripes is now classic). Jack White has a great voice for upbeat rock songs, but his voice gets annoying on the slower ones.

This is a tough one to rate. Doorbell is a certified banger, along with probably Denial Twist and Instinct Blues. But they also mixed in some balads and funky ones that felt like filler. I really enjoy the simplicity use to make awesome sound.

I saw Jack White live twice this week!! Even his weirder albums (like this one) are great.

One of the best album of music history!

This is where I dropped off from listening to The White Stripes. I liked this album and I think it’s strong and consistent, I’m just not really into this sound anymore.

I have another album of theirs but this one is new to me. I like it.

I've listened to a few White Stripes albums and always thought a couple of songs were quite good but the whole album didn't click for me. Surprisingly, considering I'd never heard of it before, I enjoyed this one a lot more than others I'd previously heard. Solid indie rock start to finish, will definitely come back to this again. Fav tracks: My Doorbell, Forever for Her, The Denial Twist

Really good - creative rock with a heavy guitar beat backed by soft drums and piano

Hard to find an album of theirs I don't like. 4/5

A lovely album, I listened to it all day long.

Some great songs, very different to seven nation army everyone knows. Really enjoyed

Listened 1/25/25

Welp, I have now gotten one White Stripes album for each of the band's members. Cool. There's still another one on here. I don't know if the White Stripes really need three albums. I'd probably go with one, maybe two. Of course, this brings us to the question of "Which White Stripes album do we cut from the list?" Probably this one. Look, I do like Get Behind Me Satan quite a bit. It's a pretty good album. But in comparison to what White Blood Cells and Elephant represent for their career, Get Behind Me Satan feels like the least necessary inclusion on a list like this. There are definitely things to like here though. I enjoy the variety that this album brings in its songs. The opener, "Blue Orchid" is probably the highlight. The theming of this album is certainly interesting and cool. The style here is definitely a bit different in comparison to the other album of theirs that I've heard, White Blood Cells, but I think it works. I'm not sure which album I like more. The singing and writing are solid. This album's good. 4/5.

The white stripes make a lot with a little. Well produced to sound not too produced. Some really good songs that are unique and instantly recognizable as theirs. I enjoy them and feel they fill that I’m feeling sorry for something vibe. Definitely will continue listening to them and this album

One of my favorite bands. Not my favorite album, but I need to say that making a completely different album in comparison with their other release has its value.

Not sure I had ever heard a White Stripes song other than Seven Nation before! Huge fan of solo Blunderbuss though, and off the back off that was maybe expecting to like this perhaps a little more - but seems a little more Lep-Zep-y-derivative. Still pretty strong, but doesn't have me plunging and plundering the rest of their catalogue like I half expected it would..

Solid album, enjoyed this very much

I do like Meg and Jack. I know there are their faulters but I like the sound. I like this album. Case in point is "The Nurse": strange and odd but it's good. There. I said it. Good

The Nurse has always reminded me of the theme music from True Romance. Also takes place in Detroit.

Hard not to get into. Cool and driving, toe tapping fun.

Had to call up The Nurse after listening to this one. Seems I’ve been diagnosed with Passive Manipulation.

Not their best but still good

Broadening their musical palette was an interesting trade-off for the White Stripes. I find myself missing the primitivism of their early work, but I also see how that's unsustainable. This is quite good.

I have a lot of sympathies for White's and the Stripes' music, but I started skipping pretty quickly. Weak 4.

If it weren't for Detroit, would there even be any good music? It seems like every decade/generation was inspired by (or aspired to be like) something that came out of Detroit. Jack White (and, Meg to a lesser extent) were that something for the 2000s (and 2010s).

Great stuff. A lot of it I had never heard before. I need to listen to more of The White Stripes. I like Jack White’s solo stuff. And it doesn’t hurt that Meg White is hot.

Didn’t realize how much of this had stuck around

The Nurse is so weird but I love it. A very cool blend in and departure from the usual White Stripes sound. The Denial Twist and I'm Lonely (But I Ain't That Lonely Yet) are both good times.

Jack White’s career is a fascinating study of how restraint can make great art. This one isn’t his best, and it’s the first one post-Seven Nation Army, with more resources available. The best songs here are the most bare-bones ones (although “My Doorbell” is great). The album is good, but it’s not as hard or as cohesive as other White Stripes albums.

Jack is allergic to electric guitar and Meg is allergic to drums. What The White Stripes lack in garage rock bangers on this album they make up for with child like curiosity and experimentation in their chosen instrumental pallette. Favourite tracks: White Orchid, Take Take Take, Red Rain

Admittedly this is my first real experience with The White Stripes outside of the obvious one. I think I need to listen to something else to get a real feel for the band. I like Meg’s drumming, and as other reviews note, the marimba usage was choice.

Kind of felt like a letdown at the time after the two masterpieces of White Blood Cells and Elephant, but in retrospect, this album is very good in its own right. Some interesting instrumentation experimentation that younger me didn’t really appreciate. And the songwriting is intricate, obscure and mature. A great entry in their nearly flawless discography.

This is pretty great, never thought I’d like The White Stripes but here I am. Favs: My Doorbell, Forever For Her (Is Over For Me), The Denial Twist

Garage-blues-rock alternativo. Un 4.

F yeah

Had owned and listened a lot to White Blood Cells and Elephant back in the day. But had lost interest by time GBMS came out and have not really listened to them since. Initial view was that this was more of the same - with the two piece format of the band rather limiting their musical range . Have been listening to this in the car and was surprised by how much a grower it it is and how the strength of the songwriting allows it overcome the limitations of drum/ guitar. Favourite track is My Doorbell.

When The White Stripes embrace their eccentricities, it makes their neo-traditionalism a hell of a lot more interesting. Get Behind Me Satan really pushes both Jack and Meg’s talents, and it’s for the better overall. Sometimes, the path this leads them down is a little silly and not something I see myself revisiting, but the majority balances it out. I never thought I’d hear myself saying that I’m cool with The White Stripes. And yet, here I am.

The White Stripes works for me. Get Behind Me Satan is no exception. Although, while they certainly deserve to be on this list, I'm not sure this specific album should be.

A good listen, but a bit too much filler. It starts off with the masterpiece that is Blue Orchid, but it can never quite match those highs again. Blue Orchid, The Denial Twist, and Instinct Blues the standout tracks.

Really good. I loved Red Rain, I’m Lonely(But Ain’t That Lonely Yet), Forever For Her(Is Over For Me), and The Nurse. The rest like Little Ghost took a few replays to grow on me but overall it was a pretty good album. I really liked how the genres would change throughout the album from garage rock to alternative/progressive rock.

You better believe this fucker rocked my powder blue volvo speakers all through high school. Last great rock band? White Stripes fuckin rule. Justice for Meg.

Did you know they were actually married

Innovative and unique with some classics. Some of their bad songs are so bad though lol 3.75/5

I love the Raconteurs, but the White Stripes are hands down the quintessential band of Jack White. Shout out to Meg White!

Solid White Stripes album. Not my favorite, but a handful of classics and the rest are enjoyable.

Raw, for better or worse. Some of my favorite white stripes tracks come from this album; see: Blue Orchid, The Denial Twist, Take Take Take. The pure creativity and ability of Jack White really shines through. On the other hand, some of the other tracks probably could have used a bit more time in the oven. But that’s always been White’s style, and that’s why we love him.

If being loud was an album, it would be this.

Doorbell is a firm favourite

This is just my kind of thing. Totally get if people are turned off by Jack White. But his melodies always sound right to me. And his vocals match the music. 4/5

Finally, after days of stuff that I did not care for, I finally got a really good one. Meg still pounds on the drum kit in her signature minimalist style and Jack lends plenty of riffs like their earlier work. But this album is definitely not a repeat of \"Elephant\". Is there anyone as prolific as Jack White? The album is still very much garage rock but White adds some piano and acoustic on several tunes which I think shows his versatility. Fun ride! I hope there are more White Stripe albums in the future.

Maybe half the songs were good, great overall sound. 3.5

Pretty sweet album. It's very unique in a white stripes kind of way. Would listen to again.

the latter two White Stripes albums deviate from the pattern established by the first four. this one may be their most varied, in terms of both style and quality. after a strong but misleading opener in their signature noisy, bluesy element, the tracklist takes all kinds of detours. the bulk of the material here alternates between acoustic (piano or guitar) and electric blues, but there's even more left hooks than just the piano. immediately after "Blue Orchid" comes one of the Stripes' most experimental songs, "The Nurse", which encompasses all of this record's sonic elements into a very strange four minutes. there's also "Little Ghost", an attempt at a country vibe that failed to connect with me. despite the quality control being all over the place, more than a couple of these songs are actually pretty great! "The Denial Twist" is probably the most successful of the piano-led numbers, with an infectious groove from Meg White while Jack White pumps out power chords on the keys. the electric "Instinct Blues" pumps up both the volume and the intrigue, with a start-stop pace that lets Jack control the flow of each section to make things feel askew. and there's a reason everyone likes "My Doorbell" so much! the deeper cuts don't really hit quite the same as they do on other White Stripes albums, but there's more than a few highlights here that fit right in with their finest, most classic material. light 7/10.

It's never a drag to listen to The White Stripes. After the breakout success of *Elephant*, Jack and Meg White sure didn't disappoint overall with their *Get Behind Me Satan*, which nicely expands their initial garage sound with all sorts of imaginative touches going from weird pedal effects and dreamy marimba to a LOT of piano playing from Jack (instead of the usual bluesy guitar, still found in half of those cuts, though). All of this partly explains why this record is a firm favourite of a friend of mine, who is admittedly a die-hard fan of the Stripes. That said, I'm not 100% sure I'll have room left for this record in my own personal list. You have great moments in this LP (namely "Blue Orchid", "My Doorbell", "The Denial Twist", "As Ugly As I Seem" and "Red Rain"), but do they add to the cultural touchstone the band represented during the noughts in really significant ways? Let's just say that the jury's still out on the one. *White Blood Cells* and *Elephant* will be in my list for sure. Any other White Stripes album is in the waiting room as of now. We'll see. After all, it's still an encouraging sign when you are in purgatory instead of heading straight to hell. Especially when the word "Satan" is in the title of your album. 😉 3.5/5 for the purposes of this list of essential albums, rounded up to 4. 8.5/10 for more general purposes (5 + 3.5) Number of albums left to review: around a hundred, as I've went over the 1000 line and this generator is including albums from all editions of the book Number of albums from the list I find relevant enough to be mandatory listens: 433 Albums from the list I *might* include in mine later on: 257 (including this one) Albums from the list I won't include in mine: 317

I do not like punk, so I expected not to like this, but damn, it’s a damn good album! I’d like to give it a 3.5, but given how surprised I am, I’m going to bump it up to a 4!

not my favorite white stripes album but an excellent album nonetheless

I don't know exactly what the feeling is that I get when I listen to The White Stripes but I do know I never tire of experiencing it and I only appreciate it more with time. Not their best album, but that doesn't mean anything to me because i love all of it. 4.5/5

pretty gud

Great stuff

All right, this is the last album from The White Stripes and Jack White, in general, on my journey. I have heard "Blue Orchid" on the Guitar Hero 5 soundtrack and still consider it a bop. How does the rest of Get Behind Me Satan stack up? Well, it's rather interesting in contrast to the opening track because this album is a largely piano-driven affair. Songs like "My Doorbell", "The Denial Twist", and "White Moon" were written around simple but effective piano lines from Jack alongside Meg's pounding beats, leaning more into their blues-rock roots. In that regard, this album has a more nostalgic feel than previous efforts, and I respect that. There are still a few deviations that led to an uneven experience. Some are fun like the raucous buzzing guitar riffs of "Instinct Blues" and "Red Rain", or the folk adjacent adventures of "Little Ghost" and "As Ugly As I Seem". The one off-putting track for me just happened to be the second track "The Nurse" with its use of marimbas in the hook and spare off-kilter bursting guitar and drumwork. Overall, I had a good time with Get Behind Me Satan. One thing I can take away from this journey is that Jack White is consistent in his work, and much like his other works here, this album is getting a solid recommendation from me.

The White Stripes, hell yeah.

I love the White Stripes, and this album was no different. It's funny you said you hated how The Nurse ended cause I felt the same way about most of the songs on the album, that they just seemed to stop, and didn't have a satisfying conclusion.

What a fantastic album! I listened to it twice, back-to-back. It's not a perfect album, but I enjoyed the heck out of it. I absolustely hate how "The Nurse" just abruptly ends, literally in the middle of a riff. Not even at the end of a 4/4 bar, just right in the middle. Why? Grinds my gears. What I love about Jack White is how he can incorporate blues in this Garage Rock style, and absolutely rock its socks off. Great album 4/5

Great album. Good songs, but they work better as an album. Love The White Stripes. Love how they’re always experimenting with new instruments. Not as catchy as their other albums. Not their worst, though. 4/5

They never dissapoint

Great album

Favorites were Blue Orchid, Little Ghost, I'm Lonely

A fantastic white stripes era

What a record! I’m not sure I ever spun this in full before, but I remember many of its tracks fondly from its high Triple J rotation back in the day. A year or so ago I stumbled upon My Doorbell after not hearing it for yonks, but I’d totally forgotten about other classics like Blue Orchid and Denial Twist until today. This was a great trip back to 21 year old me. My level of respect for Jack White has increased a notch.

Solid but not blowing my socks off either.

A rock album not quite like the rest, got quite a few bangers on it and those that aren't are still very good.

"Blue Orchid" kicks off Get Behind Me Satan just as I would expect from The White Stripes, but "The Nurse" tells us early on that they have no issue breaking away from their normal guitar and drum approach, though they kick you in the head unexpectedly just to remind you where you're at. The country, front porch jam of "Little Ghost" has some timing surprises and a brief harmonic a capella moment. "White Moon" replaces the guitar with piano but loses none of the edge. The relaxed stream-of-conscious "As Ugly As I Seem" replaces the drums with what sounds like a shoebox while Jack White shows a clean precision on the acoustic guitar. "I'm Lonely (But I Ain't That Lonely Yet)" adds gospel while Jack stretches his voice prefectly. I have White Blood Cells, and Get Behind Me Satan seems a natural progression of their sound and style. I assume they have a bigger budget by now, since they are bringing in more instruments and they are going beyond what two can reproduce live. The melodies and songwriting were always present, and they remain the main draw here too; musically, there are innovative ideas weaving in and out of the song structure. Both comfortably nostalgic and refreshingly new.

Jack White is such a student of all the Americana-adjacent genres, like blues, country, gospel, and those elements are here, but the great thing is that the reverence doesn't restrain his creativity. He can travel in these well-trod spaces but still bring out new dimensions. For instance, The Nurse pricked up my ears with that unusual marimba (I'm a lover of retro Exotica like that of Martin Denny and Les Baxter), but then those oddly timed crunches came in and made me feel like I was taking crazy pills. All in all I found this offering varied, engaging, and solid.

If only I had listened to this during the day I would have opined that the title of this was an omen for the election in the US today. This was a great album, just like their others. As I say on all the White Stripes, I really enjoy their music and stripped down style. Jack White's voice reminds me of a mix of Robert Plant and Gerard Way. I really liked the exploration in this one, lots of twangs and riffs that go a little bit before bringing back to the song.

Are the siblings? Are they Exes? Either way, they make great music!

Not my fav White Stripes album but it has some of my fav tracks from them.

Þessi hljómsveit hefur verið í smá uppáhaldi. Einhverskonar blanda af vel blúsuðu rokki og fölskum þjóðlögum. Ég hlusta reglulega á hvítu rendurnar og mun alveg halda því áfram

It was fine probably would have to sit with it longer to fully appreciate it, but a couple songs had really fun things they did with changing tempos that I liked

Maybe my least favorite from them - seem very experimental lots of xylophones and other interesting instruments. Still better than a lot of trash in this list. Favorite is as ugly as I seem. Jack white is awesome.

Fantstic

A bit of a mixed bag for me. I like the White Stripes but this one has more duds on it than their other albums. Still, especially the harder rockers are great songs. I loved Blue Orchid and Instinct Blues. As Ugly As I Seem is a beautiful slow and simple song. A lot of the other songs range from unmemorable to not that liked by me. Still a well liked and nostalgic album for me though.

As performance art, it’s pretty good…as music it’s not good.

you shut up this is good

Old Jackie boy sounds a bit whiny on this one, but the guitar on 'Blue Orchid' alone more than makes up for it.

Gear: Hifiman Arya Artwork: 🔴⚪️+⚫ Production: 🎧😘🤌 Music: 🎸🥁🎹⚡️🤘 Rating: 🔴⚪️🔴⚪️(⚫)/5

The White Stripes were a band that got the most from their self-imposed limitations; guitar and drums and that's it but, on this album they broke their own rules and added some bass, piano and a few other select instruments that Jack felt like fiddling with. -Jack White is a superb guitarist and vocalist, Meg White is an average drummer, but gets the most from her minimalist style -starts with Blue Orchid one of my favourite songs by the White Stripes and ends with I'm Lonely (But, I Ain't That Lonely Yet) another of my favourites. In-between there's the fantastic My Doorbell and the Denial Twist, but the majority of the album sounds very rushed... Which it was; recorded in only two weeks. - The Nurse sounds like the theme from the Rugrats 😆 -There is enough here to keep me listening, but certainly not my favourite WS album

I really enjoyed this one! I was pleasantly surprised because I saw The Raconteurs live a few years ago, and they weren’t my cup of tea. I appreciated the diversity (and sometimes weirdness) of sound on this album.

Very good indeed.

Good album solid 4/5

Very solid album.

More interesting than the other White Stripes album on here

I like how experimental they are, the lyrics are a bit too random sometimes and songs can sound quite similar

great stripes! Jack White really keeps Rock N Roll alive!

First song sounded familiar as White Stripes, but the rest of the songs were very interesting, a lot of piano and song more melodic use his voice than what I know. Still has the distinct Jack White sound with his iconic voice and slide guitar.

Jack white really did something special back in the day

I saw The White Stripes perform two songs from this album live on The Daily Show when this album was released and those goddamn earwigs were in my head for weeks afterwards. Now, thanks to this damned list, they’re back in there. It’s a good thing I like them there.

Rings my doorbell.

Very unique sound!

Some good songs, some silly ones that's the white stripes but musically always very fun

It's a bit all over the place and he has a silly voice but it's pretty good

While I consider myself a big fan of The White Stripes, this album seems like a bit of an off beat for them. Half of the album is great singles, the other half is sort of filler, and yet the vibe is constantly changing from song to song rather than keeping some sort of consistency. It’s still got their iconic sound, but one that doesn’t feel as finely tuned as their prior ventures leading up to this.

Very up and down one song is like amazing and the next is very meh but when a good song does come on its GOOD

The white stripes rocked

Seeking to crawl away from the claw of the Seven Nation Army, The White Stripes set out to prove that they are more than what they've been perceived as on the stylistically diverse Get Behind Me Satan. While not fully jettsoning the tried and true guitar and drum pairing, Jack and Meg do their best to incorporate more out-there arrangements into their palate and, for the most part, they succeed. Get Behind Me Satan may not encourage a stadium to get up off their feet in unison but it portrays one of the best groups of the 2000s at their finest, which is more than enough. Favorites: Blue Orchid, The Nurse, My Doorbell, Little Ghost, The Denial Twist, White Moon, Instinct Blues, Take, Take, Take, As Ugly as I Seem, Red Rain.

3.8 - Still liked it, but wish Jack White had been spaced out a little bit.

When you think about it, it's pretty impressive that this is probably the worst / least consistent White Stripes album, because its only real flaw is that it just sort of peters out.

How can you not be fond of a band that follows up "Blue Orchid", a hard rock stomper with a great riff that wouldn't have sounded out of place on any of their last few albums, with "The Nurse", a fucking marimba piece? There's more than a few things that don't really work here, but I at least admire them for going for it, and it's got 4 songs I've listened to 100+ times, so.

Actually enjoyed that album

Good album. Forgot how much I liked Doorbell and Denial Twist. Hadn't listened to them since mid-2000s.

Good stuff

My Doorbell is one of my favorite White Stripes songs but otherwise I wasn’t familiar with this album. I love the White Stripes’ sound, so hard to imagine anything by them being less than a 4 for me. I liked the first half of the album better than the second half, especially Blue Orchid, Forever for Her, and Little Ghost (in addition to My Doorbell).

The White Blood Cells - Elephant - Get Behind Me Satan run is incredible, but this is the weakest of the three.

Thoroughly enjoyed this

Colorful songwriting, tight and loose at the same time.

This is a fine and quite eclectic collection, ranging from familiar riff-driven tunes, to more melodic songs incorporating piano and other instruments. For me this variety makes for a more listenable experience than other White Stripes albums

I will try to be objective about this one, but kicking the album off with Blue Orchid is gonna have me PUMPED UP. Listening notes: Fist pumping to Blue Orchid then sliding into the marimba for The Nurse.. wonderful. on into My Doorbell! When ya gonna ring it?! Forever for Her - solid. Little Ghost!! Love how old timey that track is. The Denial Twist.. Man. Going to a party where the DJ just played this album straight through would be a ton of fun. Perfect first half of the album IMO Slowing it down with White Moon, Instinct Blues. Passive Manipulation - Meg's brief interlude! Take, Take, Take! As Ugly As I seem.. a little bongo action. Red Rain.. spooky toy piano. and I'm lonely, but I ain't that lonely yet. Beautiful piano. Just read on the Wiki that this album was removed from the 1001 Albums list in the 2007 edition. I'm sure glad they kept it on here because this might be my fav so far! Summary: Perfect first half of the album, almost had me leaning 5 stars. But the sleepier, more restrained second half pulls it back to reality. I would still listen to this album any day any time. The musicality is great, the lyrics are interesting. It feels timeless. 4.3/5

Always enjoy some white stripes.

Even though there weren’t any real stand out songs I really enjoyed this and found myself wanting to listen again

Favs: Blue Orchid, Forever For Her (Is Over For Me), The Denial Twist, Instinct Blues. Least fav: Little Ghost
