Reviews (page 5 of 12)
Rocked then. Rocks now. Jack White is a true rock and roll star.
So THIS is the album that song from Paranorman is from? Great album.
Great stuff from only two musicians.
Was dreading this one to be honest, after finding the other album of theirs bland But this one was much better, I liked it! Still don't think it should be on this list though 4 ⭐️
This record holds up so well. I remember listening to this obsessively when it first was released. It was fun to revisit.
It's great cause it's the White Stripes and I love them, but being critical, it's definitely not their best album, it's got some bangers but not at the same high level as others are.
Not the best stripes album but a stripes album nonetheless. Satan bless jack and Meg.
I quite liked this, and will return!
This is one fun ass LP. It's classic, yet modern. It's rock 'n' roll, yet very pop in places. It's rough and grungy, yet has slick production. It feels like Jack White wears his heart on his sleeve, but has no problem moulding it into something that fits the band. My knowledge of this band has been strictly what the radio and/or television has presented me with over the years. So I had a rough idea of the sound of 'The White Stripes’. But I didn't expect an entire album to surprise me with its versatility and depth. I often hear about the genius of Jack White; so it's nice to finally experience at least a taste of it here. I may just dig deeper into this discography.
I didn't expect this to hold up as well as their previous albums, but it really does. This kicks ass. The marimba is great. I want to sing along to Little Ghost over and over.
Pretty sick album. I gotta say that the flow from track to track is pretty impeccable here. There are some great vibe shifts, particularly the ones into The Nurse and Passive Manipulation. I've not listened to much of the band before, but I liked how a lot of the tracks had more of an acoustic approach, and I think it emphasises the bangers even more. Best Track: Take, Take, Take Worst Track: Forever For Her (Is Over For Me)
Best Song: My Doorbell Worst Song: As Ugly as I Seem
Fun
Ok, only my second album from this list, yeah I've got some catching up to do. I like these guys and certainly worth another listen down the line, just not quite a 5 for me. Fave: My Doorbell
Hmmm, my third White Stripes album, which feels a bit superfluous - they're not really doing anything on this album they weren't doing on their earlier albums? 🤷 I don't have much of a history with this album so it doesn't enjoy as much of a nostalgia bump as the others, but it's still some competently executed biz. Fave tracks - "The Nurse" is fun, for the xylophone or xylophone-adjacent usage. "The Denial Twist" and "Take Take Take" were both standouts, too.
Good album, but not as good as my favorite White Stripes albums. Much slower. Still enjoyed it though. 3.6 stars
None of the hits but still a stellar album
A great follow-up to Elephant, a little more distorted and blusey
this is fucking incredible???? didn’t like little ghost but everything else is going on my playlist and I will be listening on repeat 🤞🤞
The first time I listened was kind of disjointed since I kept having to pause and I didn't love it. I went back and listened again all together and it really worked a lot better for me.
"Little Ghost" is my favorite song so far. I also loved "My Doorbell", it sounded a little bit like Cee Lo Green somehow. I'm not sure what the right away to describe these songs is, but they seem almost funky? They make me bop my head for sure. This album has such interesting and varied percussion. I've heard so many different noises throughout. It's cool. This album was good. Not a long of songs I loved, but also very few I didn't enjoy. It's going to be a lower 4/5 for me. 7/10
It's easy to fall into the trap of thinking The White Stripes only have one sound. Listening to this album was fun because I had forgotten that these guys have more than one sound. They actually have two!
A solid album.
A bit too sparse instrumentally. There is an entire song that is just marimbas or something. A few solid rockers though!
Absolutely adore The White Stripes. Even though I find this to be an excellent album, there's 2-3 others from them I would put ahead, if only by a little.
Turns out I really like the White Stripes. Jack is an unbelievable musician and guitar player but it’s amazing the restraint he shows to develop such simple and catchy riffs. A most solid listen.
White Stripes is def a band I've grown to appreciate more with time. I think this is a step back from Elephant, but I still enjoyed it and rounding up my rating. 3.75/5
Solid White Stripes offering -- top notch instrumentalism backing Jack White's high pitched voice singing their quirky lyrics. Bunch of good tunes on this one, highlighted by Blue Orchid, My Doorbell, Take Take Take, and I'm Lonely.
Jack and Wade have no idea what they are talking about
Love the White Stripes!
Really good album - some catchy songs.
a four because the ones i didn’t connect to i really didn’t but it has bangers could i write poetry to this? y
Another fab White Stripes album. As I said before - the perfect mix of classic influences with a twist, and very cool. Nice to hear the beginnings of some of the crazy piano which comes into its own on Blunderbuss. Jack White always draws me in both musically and lyrically, and leaves me with a smile on my face, fancying a glass of bourbon.
Y'know, while to me The White Stripes are very much, definitionally, garage rock and blues, I did really enjoy hearing them explore sounds outside of that. Playin' around with marimba and more piano... And, hey, there's the song from the PARANORMAN credits. At my core, I'm still more a "Ball And A Biscuit" girl than anything (except maybe "CNR", honestly), but still, I'm happy they went ahead and tried all this out.
Besides some more rocking tunes here and there, this is a more acoustic side to the White Stripes' catalogue that still has those Jack White tendencies to it. 4.5 rounded down to 4.
That’s a very good 4. This is my first proper White Stripes album, and all I can say is… I really wish Seven Nation Army wasn’t the big song for them, because it undermines their talent as a band that can cover this wide of a musical net. The variety of instrumentals and genres and soundscapes covered here is incredibly cool and really enjoyable to me. Blue Orchid, ironically, is sort of a bad tone setter – it makes the album feel like it’s gonna be a full rock album, but when it immediately jumps into xylophones and marimbas and maracas and all of these other instruments, it really unlocks the potential of the album. There’s great stuff on here, but I think my favorite one was The Denial Twist; it felt like a damn Cage the Elephant song a few years early, and I loved that a lot. Little Ghost is a close second for me; it’s a goofy country style song, and I’m a sucker for that kind of sound. Overall, though, this is a pretty damn good album. It’s not a 5 off of a first listen; I think there’s just a few too many filler tracks in here (Red Rain, in particular, is egregious about this) to make the entire album feel as satisfying as it could have been, but it can absolutely grow on me. It’s a VERY good 4, though.
not what I thought they sounded like tbh but I liked it
White Stripes can do no wrong, great album
At first I thought, “Ugh, another White Stripes album,” because I’m not always the biggest fan of their minimalist style. But it actually really worked for me on this album.
Ææææðisleg plata.
Excellent album with a few of my favorites from this band. Overall stellar!
Get Behind Me Satan is a solid album that features some standout tracks, though it doesn't quite match the impact of their previous work. Songs like Blue Orchid and My Doorbell are catchy and showcase the band's knack for memorable hooks. The production is polished, and the duo's chemistry is evident, but the album's pacing is uneven. While Get Behind Me Satan offers plenty to enjoy, it doesn't quite capture the same magic as their breakthrough releases. It's an interesting evolution in their sound, showing growth and exploration, but it leaves me yearning for the raw simplicity of their earlier music. NUMBER OF BANGERS - 6 STAND OUT TRACK - I'm Lonely (But I Ain't That Lonely Yet)
opening with Blue Orchid sets a great tone. I still cant get past Jack White making music for Steampunk Snake-oil Salesmen in a saloon or late 1800's slave traders. such a weird manic energy to everything he makes, BUT for what its worth I liked this album kinda. Some songs I couldnt wait to end, but some grabbed me and I enjoyed quite a bit. I'm Lonely being one of them. Also on the album cover Jack White looks like a Dracula.
Well colour me surprised. I was wrong. Turns out there is a small sliver where the White Stripes rock and Jack Whites goofy carnival shit intersect that actually sounds pretty good. This album is that intersection. I enjoyed most of the songs on it!
78/100
Thought this was pretty solid until the last cut....then I knew it was. I'm Lonely...
8/10. I liked it more than Elephant, and it had quite a few fun tracks on it. :)
I liked listening to this record and got a copy when it first came out. I'm generally a fan of the band. I don't know if it's as strong as some of their other material, though. The more rock and roll the sound, the better, I think.
love me some White Stripes
Not a perfect album trough and trough, but it had a bunch of bangers
Using the Apple Music Star rating for each track. I rated this, on average as a 4.5 out of 5. The stand out tracks for me were Blue Orchid, My doorbell and Take, Take, Take.
I forgot how different this album is to the other ones that came out before it. If this one had come out in the 60s or 70s it'd have blown minds. As it is, there's a few really strong tracks, some that take a bit of getting used to and some that just don't quite hit the mark which is probably why I'd forgotten about this album since owning it years ago. Shout out to Meg White's drumming that, I think, is the key ingredient in making The White Stripes sound like The White Stripes and not the Raconteurs or other Jack White projects.
Love it!
Ok but not great, nothing besides the singles stood out.
The highs are really high on this one. Unfortunately, there is a lot of mid and low here as well. This is still a banger. But it's not the most consistent White Stripes record.
So many highlights including denial twist, instinct blues. Enjoyed this one
Another very pleasant surprise
Little bit folk little bit blues little bit rock. An interesting album with my favorite song of their’s “My doorbell”. 7/10
The band that spawned the garage rock revival
Although I can't say I enjoy it as much as White Blood Cells from a few years prior, I do appreciate the duo's ability to change up their sound and experiment just a bit with some funky new instruments. I don't think there's a bad song on this album, but many just do not hit as hard as those off WBCs. 7/10
Starts strongly, fades a little but it's a good listen
Another surprise, I really like this album. I think it is because of the variety and and always being surprised, pleasantly, at what comes next. I could handle listening to more Alternative Rock if it delivers what White Stripes delivers!
Fantastic garage rock album by White Stripes. It does not contain their best songs, but the overall kevel of quality is stunning. Compared to Elephant it is more varied, raw and daring.

There’s only two instruments in every song and they really do make it work! “My Doorbell” and “The Denial Twist” are awesome. Who knew piano and drums make such a good combination?
Enjoyable album - worth a listen
Jack White doesn't need a guitar to rock your ass. He'll rock your ass with a piano. He'll rock your ass with a mandolin. He'll rock your ass with a marimba. He does, however, need Meg White in order to rock your ass; or at least he still did back in 2005. And rock your ass she does. And when he has to, Jack White rocks your ass with a guitar too. But this is mainly the album where Jack White proved that he didn't need a guitar to rock your ass.
esta bien cool, aunque esperaba algo distinto considerando que ellos hacen rock algo pesado, me gusto tho. strong 7/10
This is a much different vibe than Elephant. Not that it's bad, but I do miss the grunginess of the previous album. Like, if I heard this first, I would think they're just an odd rock band. Jack White's voice does carry the songs that aren't as musically interesting. I spent the first few songs just getting used to the less grungy/lighter style, but once I got use to it, this album is pretty great. There's a couple of songs that blow me away, but the whole album doesn't have that same quality.
Pretty good. A lot better than I remember it being, and I liked this album when it was released. Can something be all over the place but also cohesive? This? Album? This one.
8/10
It's pretty great but my expectations for The White Stripes are bigger
Good
Solid White Stripes album, probably my second favorite of theirs
Miksi tällä listalla on järjestään kaikki White stripesin levyt? Tämä on hyvä kokonaisuus ja hyvin suveneerin tasainen suoritus, mutta ei aivan täys mestariteos. Melkein tasapaksu, jos Whiten mikään juttu voi tasapaksu olla (ei).
Very good... would listen again. 4/5
Love the White Stripes and this album is no exception. Saw them tour this album, incredible start to finish. Fav track: Take, Take, Take.
I'm not that much into The White Stripes which might be why I really enjoy this often shunned album. It has such a great musical sensibility for making nearly every track go groovy and wild altogether. The lyrical themes might be special and deserved some polishing here and there. And I don't think the last tracks are as great as the beginning. Still, I'd really recommend this album.
Solid album
Funky, raw, fun!
For some weird reason this reminds me of going to the circus. Unlike the circus, this does not have exotic animals like lions and tigers and elephants. Also unlike the circus, they do not have clowns. Tightropes and trapezes are mysteriously absent. There is no over priced popcorn, no ringmaster directing our attention to a specific point of interest. No big overheated smelly tent, no cheap bleachers as sets. So yeah, for all those reasons, this is just like going to the circus.
Maybe my least favorite of the white stripes albums but it has a couple of their classics on it (my doorbell, blue orchid, little ghost and white moon). I will say, I have a distinct memory of dj-ing once and playing “instinct blues” and, at the end with the incessant repeating of one note and crash symbols I changes the rq to emphasize the low vibrations and slowed it down and then played “the end” by the doors and it sounded like that scene from apocalypse now with the chopper blades.
Jack White ist irgendwie immer gut.
very good album, they are unique and diverse in their sound.
Garage-blues-rock alternativo. Un 4.
Reifes Album von den White Stripes. Die wilderen Vorgänger gefallen aber besser. ~3,5
I love this. It's bold, loud, shouty, distinct, fun, raucous.... Good stuff, more please!
Loud, explosive, at times vulnerable. Lots of variety, I felt like rock and blues influences came through clearly. I've always loved Blue Orchid, stoked to see this album on the list.
Pretty good White Stripes album
I think I would like other albums like them. I generally enjoyed the sound but struggled to connect to this
Original and catchy country rock
You know what you get with the stripes great stuff. The Spotify radio after the album is superb what a bonus.
As I get older I appreciate the White Stripes more and more.
Listening this album on high-quality headphones does not work - the other White Stripes albums sound much better. On computer speakers it is less noticeable and probably the album sounds fine on proper speakers as well. Song quality: solid - it is White Stripes so I like it but there was no reason to make this album a (temporary) 1001-album. score in 2005: 8/10 score in 2024: 7/10.
Listening to this after many years I was a bit disappointed initially, but upon a second listen I could appreciate it again. I think a solid four stars is in order here.
Why don't we get the early WS albums? This is still more than ok (narrow 4 stars) but the raw edge is lost a bit.
7.5/10 That’s 2 WS albums now, and they have pleasantly surprised me These are genres that I typically don’t enjoy so much, but the songs are so well-written and all seem to put a slight modern twist on them Excellent production and vocals Best: The Nurse
Damn this is a lot better than I remember.
Favourite songs: Blue Orchid, My Doorbell, The Denial Twist, Instinct Blues, Little Ghost Least favourite songs: The Nurse, As Ugly As I Seem, Red Rain (fucking xylophones should be left in the kindergarten classroom) 4/5
Great! I especially enjoyed the opening track.
Not as memorable as other WS/Jack White albums but still excellent
Did not love his voice, but I enjoyed the music. I liked the 11/4 section in “Take Take Take” bc I love when songs play with the time signature.
I know it's an undercurrent in all of their albums to some extent, but the faux incestuousness in this one started to become a bit too much. That aside, it was still a great folk rock album with the white stripes signature sound. I liked blue orchid and little ghost and not to contribute to another talking point, but there were couple tracks that I really disliked and I realized it was because the production, mainly drums, sounded worse than all the other tracks.
Get Behind Me Satan is, I think, the second White Stripes album I ever bought, but the last one I got into. When I was young and impatient, I listened to Blue Orchid and loved it, but was always put off from the rest of the album because of The Nurse and it’s marimba. It’s an odd album, and less immediately satisfying for that oddness, but it’s also the White Stripes album I think merits the most replays, because it reveals more of itself over repeated listens. And their is a lot to enjoy, from the gorgeous piano balladry of White Moon, the acoustic guitar work outs Forever For Her (Is Over For Me) and As Ugly As I Seem, and just a straight up Country heart break song in Little Ghost, the best song on the album. But I agree that it isn’t without it’s flaws. Blue Orchid, much as I love it, does feel out of place, and that’s a complaint I have with the other harder songs as well. I also find some of the songs a bit difficult to differentiate by title alone, but the reason for that is that I spend most of my time with the album just letting it wash over me, rather than obsessing over the track listing. I was reading a discussion about the Like feature of Letterbox and the gulf between a moderately reviewed film with a like and a perfect or near perfect review without one. Get Behind Me Satan is a four, but it’s a four with a like. It’s not the best White Stripes album, and I’m sure the other ones that come up on the list will be better rated. But I do have a sneaking suspicion that it’s my favourite
Messy and lo-fi and chaotic, but you have to hand it to Jack and Meg for not letting the fame and money from "Seven Nation Army" go to their head, and just carrying on with what they do best.
vibing, not their best but still vibey
It took me a long time to appreciate the White Stripes style but now I am all about it. The raw, seemingly unorganized format is awesome and I am happy that we have had 3 albums now. Blue Orchid absolutely rocks as the beginning of the album with the iconic guitar riff. And I'm Lonely is a great way to send off the album with just the piano and singing. Everything in between is great as well.
Nice
Top top songs
Solid album. Blue Orchid, My Doorbell, The Denial Twist, Instinct Blues, and Take, Take, Take are my favorites. Probably a couple songs that I really enjoyed at the end of the album too, but I'd have to give it another listen. Overall a solid 8/10.
Guitar was pretty sick, enjoyed the album a lot 8/10
Always like them
This was very pleasantly surprising! I really liked the range of styles and the variety of sounds used.
Hard to find a Jack White album less than listenable to, and this sees them stretch their sound with more piano and instrumentation beyond the blues guitar and drums. My Doorbell is - a banger - and it's great all the way through.
Huge fan of the white stripes! It's unfortunate they chose this album - I would rank this as their 4th best album - and I assume it'll be the only one they see. Very unfortunate. Overall, this is a great album! Blue orchid and denial twist are great songs, the rest are decent with some filler. If I had to choose one album by the white stripes, it would be white blood cells or elephant for sure!
Greatness
This is good stuff.
Talk about judging a book by its cover. I proper enjoyed this and thought it was gonna suck.
On sait que les White Stripes maîtrisent leur popolopopopo mais on aimerait les entendre chanter autre chose ou au moins d'autres onomatopées que po et lo.
Weird little album. Every time you think they’re about to play it straight some more weirdness breaks out. The instrumentation, percussion and mannered singing are jarring but in a good way. A jagged little anti-pop, almost-masterpiece.
bastante darks alternative. definitivamente es una fase y estos dos ahora regentan una granja de conejos algo así
Groundbreaking, interesting, crazy talented. Fantastic!
It opens strong tales off a bit but I enjoyed the variety
Cool production and sound-panning. The vocalist reminds me of early-career Robert Plant (a la Led Zeppelin III, 1970). Tracks like The Denial Twist and Instinct Blues really capture this classic-rock energy, which is also present in other tracks with a really nifty modern spin. Some unusual instrumentation in The Nurse incorporates this modern spin especially effectively. Add to that Blue Orchid, an excellent, catchy pop-rock track, and you have a pretty darn good album. One issue that prevents this from attaining a 5th star is that the filler is noticeable (Forever For Her, Passive Manipulation, Red Rain) because you notice several weaker hooks being haphazardly thrown together to make up for the fact that they're weak (think "Jet" by Paul McCartney + Wings). The instrumentation is also a little inconsistent, making it hard to recall the band's sound other than "modern garage rock with, uh, some guitars and pianos? I think?" Other than that, though? Fire. Key tracks: Blue Orchid, My Doorbell, Little Ghost, The Denial Twist, Instinct Blues
A good album from generational talents. Get Behind Me Satan is quirkier than Elephant, but no less interesting.
This is a White Stripes album on this list??? Why? White Blood Cells and De Stij better be on here too or I’m going to flip a table. I mean this one’s fine, but the other two are masterpieces
Rock n roll, every song has stuck in your head/sing a long potential, the pure simple drum feels like you could play it, jack shreds
Genre: Garage rock, alternative rock, blues rock 2005 Standouts: Blue Orchid, My Doorbell, Denial Twist, I'm Lonely (But I Ain't That Lonely Yet) Excellent: 4/5
Solid.
I don't know why every time I listen to Blue Orchid I think of Seven Nation Army. Dig this album.
I liked most of it
4/5. While Jack White’s high pitch voice usually annoys me, I really enjoyed many of the songs on this album. I thought there was great diversity between tracks and showed a well-rounded White Stripes.
Tough to follow up one of the decades best. I still love the drum work especially on this. The slow drumming is what makes White Stripes great. Jack White is free now to use whatever the most talented session musicians to make whatever music he thinks he couldn’t do before. I just do not care about it. Constraints breed creativity.
Very good album, enjoyed most of the songs
Very good. Liked just about everything.
Dissonant in a good way
Blue Orchid opens exactly as you'd predict for a White Stripes album, and from there it explores a bunch of new places. PIano, marimba, bluegrass etc. Great all the way through.
Woah now, piano? Little bit high production now for them isn’t it. Calm down
Just, so great. I've never listened to the whole album before, but I'm so glad I did, it tells a story that I've obviously missed out on. Love you, Little Ghost.
Missed this one of theirs at the time, but really enjoyed. A mostly successful, occasionally great, experiment with their sound and songwriting.
It's in the lower half of White Stripes albums, but that doesn't mean it's bad. Four absolute greats and some toot basically.
A jaunty little album with some good tunes. A lot more piano than I was expecting
different than the rest of the band’s stuff and very charming as well
Own and enjoy this album - hard to give it a fresh listen, but I managed. A style change for the duo, but White us the master of many genres, styles and instruments. What other artist goes from punk rock to producing grammy winning country albums. He is a master and I really enjoy this stripped down, rocky musicality. Great live show with him and Meg.
I was really surprised at how much I liked this album. It is not something I would have likely listened to on my own. I put it with a group like the Black Keys….I could put songs from that album in my rotation and enjoy them. While I can’t pick a favorite, that might take a couple of listens, I enjoyed the album as a whole.
Pretty enjoyable album. Little rocky and feels very 2000s. A couple songs I really liked, but it fell off a little at the end.
Solid.
The drumming varies far more between songs than on their previous album, making it less one-note and monotonous. Meg's vocals add more texture and harmony than before as well. Despite not knowing any of the tracks, actually enjoyed it more than Elephant.
Great listen and album.
Loving this! It's so stripped down and raw, but does so much with just a guitar/piano, a drumkit and a voice. The syncopation and playing on the offbeat always keeps you interested and on edge, and the rhythmic modulation just shows how in tune this pair were. Very distinctive sounds, very unorthodox approach, but still with those classic blues rock influences clear and present. I'm sad that I missed this the first time around, but I'm glad I'm getting to discover it now for real.
Very creative album. Knew the title but never listen to before.
I prefer Elephant- but there are some jams on this album too. Little Ghost has always been a song I loved.
Liked this more than their debut actually, but I’m glad the editors of the book realized 3 White Stripes was a lot early on. Aka, I don’t mind that this was removed. White & White try a lot on this album, and pretty much all of it works. Special s/o to the country “Little Ghost” and the supremely catchy “Doorbell” HL: “Blue Orchid”, “My Doorbell”, “Forever For Her”, “Little Ghost”, “Instinct Blues” Also January 21st, 2024
Richtig angenehm, mit kräftigen, nicht immer üblichen Sounds.
Niceee
Not a new album to me, I was a huge fan of the White Stripes in high school and in my early 20s so this took me back.
I do love the white stripes but not my fave album .. I feel like Meg can unleash way more drumming prowess
This is a White Stripes album I wasn't familiar with before listening, but I am really pleasantly surprised and liked it much more than I initially thought I would. It is different enough from the "famous" White Stripes sound (which isn't bad, just majorly overplayed) to be interesting. Loving the marimba – who knew the White Stripes have range. After listening to it 3+ times, I would even go as far as to call it my current favourite White Stripes output just because of its energy, originality, varied sound. Since this came after White Blood Cells and Elephant, the albums with some of their most well known songs (hello, Seven Nation Army), I really admire the fact that they didn't just go the "copy paste" route that some musicians sometimes go just trying to reproduce their famous sound to infinity. I'm not familiar enough with the complete White Stripes discography to comment on this more in depth, but this was an unexpected and a very welcome discovery.
A pleasant surprise today as an album I know well from when it was new. It’s not quite ‘White Blood Cells’ but the White Stripes in their prime were exciting and consistent, bashing out their unique brand of blues-rock. Equally capable of creating a catchy rocker like Blue Orchid or My Doorbell as a tender but accomplished piano ballad like I’m Lonely or Forever for Her. Great album and very close to a 5. Comfortably a 4.5.
It’s ok I guess, nothing special but I like it.
Some pretty good tracks.
Not his sister!!!!!!
Previous Familiarity: High. Bought this album when it came out. My first exposure to the White Stripes was their 3rd album "White Blood Cells". That album, to me, sounded like a mix of Led Zeppelin and the Violent Femmes. I loved it! A unique take on the blues-rock genre and not only fun, but excellent display of guitar and drum techniques. This album expands the sound a bit to draw in a few more folky sounds like haunting marimba, plunky piano, and Appalachian jug band jams. The crashing stomper of "My Doorbell" is a top-tier Stripes song, featuring Jack White's folk-blues lyrics and distinctive wail and Meg's balls-to-the-wall percussion. Perfect simple-sweet chaos. This album isn't the White Stripes most concise work of art, but the direction is still there. Still sounds like a band that's trying to push themselves and still sound unmistakably like the White Stripes, and that's good enough for me.
I like its feeling of immediacy and somewhat throw away nature, the feeling that it was put together quickly and spontaneously. It’s no world beater, or as polished as say ‘Elephant’, but ‘Get Behind Me Satan’ is still charming in its own way, and certainly better than a lot of this type of album from the 2000s. 3.5/5, but feeling generous today and rounding up rather than down.
Starts really strong and fades. Good album overall.
Having heard more now from other acts ascending in Detroit around this time, White Stripes even more solidified as an oasis in the desert of mid-aughts pop culture
GREAT Album. Big Fan of them, but I've never heard this one before! Singles: ----------------------------------- Blue Orchid (UK #7, US ALT #9) My Doorbell (UK #10, US ALT #13) The Denial Twist (UK #10, US ALT #5) Standouts: Blue Orchid, My Doorbell, The Denial Twist, The Nurse, I'm Lonely (But I Ain't That Lonely) 4/5
Listening to the style of this album reminded me a lot of one of my favorite alternative rock bands The Black Keys. There's a nice mix of piano and electric guitar. I'm not in love with the amount of pacing bread downs throughout the course of the album where the songs would slow down to a screeching halt like in White Moon. I much prefer the more up tempo songs like Blue Orchid and My Doorbell.
A more adventurous White Stripes LP with what I believe is the best WS track ('Blue Orchid'). Outside of the pitch-shifted madness, though, this was a big step for the Stripes instrumentation-wise and a preview of Jack White's solo career to come. Lots of varied tempos, track lengths, and marimba make this a lively, breathing LP that's still definitively a Stripes product, just a bit more fluid and out there. Great album, wish we could return to this rock revival era where guitars were cool again.
Love this album. Great guitar parts and sound, with a lot of variety in genre, as far as rock goes.
Terrific. Musically spans numerous genres but each song is stripped down to its core essence. Thematically from highs to lows and back again. A great American rock album.
The more I listen to it the more I like it. Strong 4 stars.
Ok gute Gitarre
Very solid album.
There are some real rocking songs on this album - Blue Orchid, My Doorbell, The Denial Twist. They are some of my all-time White Stripes faves. And then there are a few real strange ones - The Nurse (the musical arrangement), Instinct Blues (rocking, but the lyrics...??), Passive Manipulation (stop letting Meg sing). You know, the kind that Jack and Meg White like to have on every album. Why I don't know - maybe so they're not seen as formulaic? Just give me more rockers. That's not fair. I also like some of their slower tempo tracks like Forever for Her (Is Over for Me), White Moon, As Ugly As I Seem, Take, Take, Take, and I'm Lonely (But I Ain't that Lonely Yet). They generally have clever lyrics (two songs about Rita Hayworth that don't sound idiotic) and strike the right balance between off-kilter instruments and straight ahead rock. I'm pretty sure I had a copy of this album at one time. It doesn't feel old despite being almost 20 years later. Not perfect but real solid.
rock solid retro blues rock. some real killer tunes on here. a classic. highlights: “blue orchid”, “my doorbell”, “instinct blues”.
These cats just keep on hitting. Another solid offering.
Eu curto pra caralho mas eu ainda acho que as melhores são mt diferenciadas
Très cool
8/10. I like the White Strippes, so I liked this album, even though it wasn't the best I've heard from them
bought this when it came out, it's good
Got very excited when I saw this album!!! I have an unfair advantage on this one given how much I listened to it when it came out. Still holds up, I really enjoyed this. Favourite track - doorbell. Been stuck in my head for 3 days now
When push comes to shove The White Stripes are probably my favourite noise makers. Get Behind Me Satan is not my favourite album, that’s probably White Blood Cells, but it’s still full of great examples of the Stripes work with several track that could make it on to their Best of. Loads of blues soaked whimsy mixed with fire and brimstone guitar torture. Just how I like it.
The Whites' work stands out against a lot of the similar era alternative rock as bringing some genuinely new material to the game. This is a great album.
Love this album!
I like "Get Behind Me Satan" and "White Blood Cells" a lot, I just don't think they quite measure up to "Elephant." Jack and Meg are a powerful combo, and each White Stripes album has plenty of instant classics and experimental whimsy, but as a whole package I think only "Elephant" hits the mark consistently throughout. When we listened to "Blunderbuss" I was thinking through the distorted lens of nostalgia that I preferred The White Stripes to Jack White's later work. But now that we've gone back through it all, I think the solo work and The Raconteurs may be stronger in some ways. Nevertheless, the recognition shown to Jack White and The White Stripes on the 1001 is significant and not undeserved. There are two White Stripes albums on the list, another one that was on the list and later removed, and one Jack White solo album. Four total albums on the list from the 2000s is something no other artist has achieved - a clear sign that White's impact and influence on rock music in the 21st century are unrivaled. Though with that said I'm surprised I'm not personally giving White & co. more stars.
Listened to half with my coworker and his joy about it was kinda infectious.
Jack White is a musical genius, no doubt about it. When the song construction is focused on the listener, see Blue Orchid, the result is incredible. However for several tracks, see The Nurse, it’s as if Jack was experimenting for himself without a listener in mind. The sound comes off as esoteric. I fully support this approach for artists because ultimately the art should be what stimulates them. The audience is just along for the ride. But it does feel like we are peeking into his world as opposed to him bringing his world to us. As a listener, this approach makes it a bit more difficult to fully get into the art.
Pretty interesting. I did quite like this.
4.5/5
Has a few of The White Stripes best songs but a far cry from their best work.
The piano focus on this album is cool. It’s not better than Elephant but still pretty good
The White Stripes as a whole is an incredible project. Jack White is such a masterful musician with a really distinguished lyrical style - to say nothing of Mary's masterful drumming. That said, I think this is one of their weaker albums and I'm surprised to find it on this list compared to other White Stripes albums. Several of these tracks are quite good - Blue Orchid, Denial Twist, The Nurse, Red Rain, My Doorbell - and this is quite distinguished from the White Stripes usual sound because of the heavy emphasis on piano, but an album like White Blood Cells or Elephant feels like it would be a more appropriate representation of the Stripes. 3.5 stars, rounded up because I do think it's a good album, but wish it was removed to make way for other albums more deserving a spot on the list.
I love the Stripes butnever gave this album a listen previously. Not sure why as this album has the usual collection of strong song after strong song. The opener, while lacking the power of either Seven Nation Army or Dead Leaves on the Dirty Ground is still a hook filled tour de forrce. The album is more varied in arrangements than either Elephant or White Blood Cells with piano riffs showing almost as much as guitar power chords. Another strong effort from Meg and Jack. 4 stars
Love me some White Stripes!
Some incredible songs on this album, My Doorbell and Blue Orchid are stand outs for me. I found the track order slightly jarring but as a whole the album is a combination of lots of Rock fused to together to make a unique sound. Great album!
"Get Behind Me Satan," The White Stripes' 2005 release, is a departure from their earlier garage rock sound. The album experiments with various instruments, prominently featuring Jack White's raw vocals and Meg White's minimalistic drumming. Standout tracks like "Blue Orchid" and "My Doorbell" showcase Jack White's songwriting prowess. While the departure from their established style is commendable, the album's diverse experimentation may feel less cohesive compared to their previous work. Nevertheless, "Get Behind Me Satan" is a bold exploration of musical boundaries, earning a solid 3.5/5 for its creativity, though it may not resonate with all fans of The White Stripes' earlier sound.
Remembered not loving the pivot from their typical sound when this first came out , but find this to be a solid folk inspired album with strong tunes ! 4.5
Solid album.
Pretty good. I like this guy.
I love the music making artistry of Jack White, and this album is at it's best when the piano is driving. Less guitar-riffing which makes this less enjoyable for me than a lot of his other work, but still creative and implements lots of interesting instruments. "Blue Orchid" and "The Denial Twist" are the standouts.
Super album.
Um bom álbum indie, com muita originalidade e influência do blues. Para a época, algo bastante original.
Interesting, creative, but sometimes a bit too wacky. Liked it overall.
Pretty good blues rock. Not as good as Elephant. Album 300.
This album never quite reaches the highs of the first track, 'Blue Orchid' but there is something to be said for the experimentation on this record. Jack White dials back the post-punk/garage rock aesthetic in favor of a more subdued approach featuring piano and marimba. This doesn't always work in their favor though it is an interesting change of pace. Nevertheless, this album is still distinctively White Stripes. What I really love about this band is that you can hear where they're from in their music. They are devoted to the great Detroit garage rock of the past and incorporate it in a way that sounds new and wholly their own.
its good
Really liked this one. Had only heard his heavy electrical guitar stuff so was a nice change of pace. Rating: 4.3
Nice
Nice album, don't remember having to listened to this one all the way through before but solid. 3.6/5
I'm behind this fully.
Musically and stylishly awesome. Just not my cup of tea
Sounds of Modest Mouse and the Beatles 😊 I've been wanting to listen to some of their albums aside from the songs that made it to radio. This one was a good one 😁
Hard to give any White Stripes less than a 4 but, this may be the weakest of their albums. Other than that, good stuff as always.
liked the first song. the first half of the album was kinda boring but the second half made up for it
8/10 - Great Album (1 popular) so many great rock songs - only one or two bad songs The duo is amazing in their complexity to fill this album with folk and rock tunes that make you wanna move. Such a unique sound in this group
I like it since I was 13 energetic, folk-y love the sound of drums of white stripes
Some familiar bangers as well as some good songs I hadn't heard before. Occasionally devolves into just noise which is not my favorite, but overall a strong album that I thoroughly enjoyed.
It's aa bit experimental Buty a good album.
tbh ocekivala sam nesto vise seven nation army al cute je
Always happy with Jacks work.
Much better than I expected, quite fun
Not the best album of theirs but I do appreciate it and the style. Definitely another good project with Jack White.
The White Stripes album with the big production. Terrific tunes as usual.
liked the style. blue orchid is amazing.
Raucous, noisy. Borrowing from folk, soul, post-punk, classic rock. Voices are not professionally trained but used as a tool to evoke emotions. Their aesthetic was also widely imitated. I loved the song “dead leaves and the dirty ground.”
Great folk and alternative rock album from the White Stripes' Jack White. Although some of the tracks I did not care for, overall it is really good! Favorite song(s): Blue Orchid, The Denial Twist, Little Ghost and Red Tain.
I really enjoyed this album. I'd only ever heard their singles before so it was really nice to hear a wider selection. Lots if different genres hit in their unique stripped back way. Favourite track was Little Ghost.
Not my favorite by the White Stripes but it's always fun to see what these two come up with. It definitely has some stand out tracks, particularly "Blue Orchid" and "My Doorbell".
Nice collection of songs for sure, only really knew the singles but enjoyed the others too. I imagine the albums which came before this are better though?
Typical White Stripes, raw and simple yet still catches my attention and sticks with me all day. It’s a magic touch.
8/10. It's The White Stripes
4 Metallica releases is overkill, but 4 Jack White releases is acceptable. This one mixes up the genres a fair bit and introduces the piano as a lead instrument. The songs with occasional heavy guitar bombardment are less interesting. Jack sounds a bit Robert Plant-ish at times. Meg's singing is on par with her drumming.
First song is great, solid album
Great album!
Very good album
Solid record, picked up a few more songs.
It was good. I liked most of the songs. Some were meh
Couple of songs were ok. Overall I thought it was a mess.
I love me some WS
Another fun Jack White installment. They have a bit more mature polished sound here, but they're just as chaotic as ever with Meg acting like a toddler playing with her percussion toys (apparently Jack plays the marimba). We have some new styles here, with the heavy metal "Instinct Blues", bluegrass "Little Ghost", folk "As Ugly As I Seem", and a couple piano ballads. I find this to be their most innovative album. A lot of cool tricks and styles on here you don't really see on any other album. It's not as rough or energetic as the rest of their catalog, but still fits their insane personality. I feel like this album was a way for Jack to express his creativity. The downside is the songs don't hit as hard as the rest of their catalog. They feel a bit incomplete, as if there's more to execute to make the songs lovable by audiences. But I found plenty to enjoy out of every song, and makes me excited to see what else Jack White has in store.
Better than I remember; Perhaps I got many of the tracks confused with Icky Thump. I put both in the 'lesser Stripes' category but I may have been wrong about this one.
Falls off at the end but enough bangers
3.5+/5
Good album.
Great
Excellent album. I don't think there was one bad album in the White Stripes discography.
Another exercise in doing more with less. Nicely done
just thinking bout the doorbell!
I love the characters and story of the band even more than the actual music. For instance: -Jack and Meg met in high school, got married in 1996, he took her last name, and as they launched their musical career they pretended to be siblings for the first 4 years. -They recorded many of their albums in their living room or garage, one album was recorded on an 8 track. -They wrote and produced this entire album in 2 weeks, and then it went on to win a Grammy. What?!?!
typically when a band departs from their down and dirty roots, i take the grumpy old man position, pining for their glory days of "true" sound. But this turn for the white stripes away jack white's garage-blues jam sessions on their previous records is a big step forward for them, IMO. This album really broadened the scope of what they were doing artistically from their full reliance on jack white as a riff machine. (not hating on that, white blood cells still takes top position for me for white stripes albums) I dig it.
Apparently i really like the White Stripes. who knew?
I'm not sure the addition of piano is the fundamental change to The White Stripes' sound that has been suggested. However, this is a moot point as whichever way you cut it, this album is ace. It's way more consistent and, in my opinion, head and shoulders above the other White Stripes albums on this list. The first half largely comprises 2 to 3 minute garage rock bangers, whilst the second half has a bit more space. It's all great, though. Rating: 4.5/5 Playlist track: My Doorbell Date listened: 13/09/23
It may not be his best album, but Jack White is a musical genius and you can't hate on him! Great listen!
Fun catchy album. A lot of little riffs and melodies that got stuck in my head
Get Behind Me Satan is peak Jack White, so it's telling that the record was part of the White Stripes period. Odd drums start the record, and, while the sound is clean throughout, the band adds new touches here and there to keep things flowing. That's perfect for the first half to two-thirds: Variety that avoids becoming the grab bag of Blunderbuss from earlier this week. Momentum slackens just a bit for fifteen or so closing minutes; I might prefer the vinyl sequencing.
Pretty solid rock album. Really good chemistry as usual when it comes to this band, and they deliver another collection of bopping and bluesy songs to chuck on a drive or while studying. Strong three and a half. Fave track: My Doorbell
No stand outs but I feel I could listen to it again and again
I forgot how good this album is. This is definitely one of, or hell maybe it is their best album. Regardless this is White Stripes really hitting it out of the park. It's just not good enough for a 5 you feel me?
Excellent different Jack White.
Favourite tracks: blue orchid; my doorbell; denial twist; instinct blues
I really enjoyed the variety of styles in this one album. Fun!
I enjoyed the eclectic collection of songs.
Love this. Really good stuff. Doorbell is an ear worm for sure.
Rating: 8/10 Best songs: Blue orchid, My doorbell
Really good.
This duo is enormously talented, and Jack White is truly remarkable on many instruments, especially guitar. I always like the way they -- and then when he went solo, he -- seem to stay very true to themselves and enjoy creating music. I haven't listened to enough of their work, so I'm glad this album came up. I didn't expect this, but at times they reminded me a little bit of Prince (in a high compliment way). Very good album.
pretty good but i personally could use a few more jams
Heard before Saved 8/13 Top track: Blue Orchid
Not really familiar with the White Stripes, but I liked this a lot. Good variety. Loved the drums and piano.
Some good songs could be into if I knew them better, a little repetitive at times
I love the white stripes. Constraints yield creativity. Just not their best album.
Nearly perfect
un très bon album rock/blues, ils ont un son les white stripes et c'est tr`s bon. 4.75
Curti um bocado, pois não reconheci hits e deste modo não me pareceu datado. Impressionou-me especialmente as guitarras.
There's a reason the only hit from the album was the Denial Twist. It's not a bad album, but that's a transcendent song, and the rest is pedestrian. Still enough to elevate to another listen.
dude i had severely underestimated the white stripes - this is as good as elephant
The greatest guitarist of the 21st century makes a piano album and it’s fine. Some good songwriting but not really what I listen to the White Stripes for.
11. jul 2026. 15.33h ponekad 5 ponekad 0 ponekad 3 best: instinct blues worst: my doorbell, little ghost
How does an album that starts so well get so boring?
i got this when it came out, having liked “elephant” quite a bit, but i didn’t really like it at the time. it’s better than i remember, but it doesn’t get better than the opening track.
Not sure to which extent I will listen again to this record, but I enjoyed the energy of the songs. Favorite track : Blue Orchid 3.5/5
Not the best one they did
Doorbell ended up an earworm for the day
a little repetitive but not so much that it's a bad listen
First complete white stripes album I've heard and it's very good
Bands need to change in order to stay relevant, but here the Stripes seem to have jettisoned their foundational principle of simple music done well in favour of overly-experimental music done badly, although a few songs still slap.
Muy buen disco, alternativo clásico de los 2000's
Some good songs, and quintessential White stripes “sounds”. A decent listen but rare I would throw it on.
I think I prefer The White Stripes I'm doses of single tracks rather than full albums. I like them but after a while Jack's voice begins to grate.
Jack White was always an eccentric at heart, but his peculiarity finds new flower on Get Behind Me Satan. Some of it I love, such as the marimbas balancing the crash of guitars on “The Nurse,” the woozy Zeppelinism of "Red Rain" or Meg White’s out-of-tune vocal turn on the brief and bizarre “Passive Manipulation.” But overall the album has less impact than its predecessors. I give the White Stripes credit for trying new things, but — and I feel predictable saying this — I want more guitar-and-drums bombast, not piano ballads.
Since removed from the list because there are TWO othe white stripes albums on the list, both better than this one.
There are a few catchy songs on here, but overall I found this album pretty uninspiring. The highlights are obvious. “Blue Orchid,” “My Doorbell,” and “The Denial Twist” they have the hooks and personality you'd expect from the White Stripes, but there's a lot of material between them that just doesn't leave much of an impression. It's not a bad album by any means, but compared to the band's best work, it feels surprisingly flat. I never found myself bored, but I also never found myself thinking, "I can't wait to hear that song again."
I was surprised to see that there are 3 WS albums on this list... you could easily argue their shouldn't be any! I liked them quite a bit when this came out and so I know the album really well and I did enjoy it, particularly with that nostalgia baked in. I also appreciate that they tried to do something a little different here, leaning in on an expanded instrumentation and away a little from the traditional garage-blues of earlier albums. But ultimately, this is just a good album and not a great one... no need to hear this before you die, but if you do, you'll probably have a decent enough time.
Yy
Blue Orchid - 4/5 The Nurse - 3.5/5 My Doorbell - 3/5 Forever For Her (Is Over For Me) - 3/5 Little Ghost - 3/5 The Denial Twist - 3/5 White Moon - 2.5/5 Instinct Blues - 2.5/5 Passive Manipulation - 3/5 Take, Take, Take - 3/5 As Ugly As I Seem - 3/5 Red Rain - 3/5 I’m Lonely (But Ain’t That Lonely Yet) - 3/5
After LOVING the first 3 White Stripes albums I started to tire of them by Elephant, and then GBMS kind of passed me by. Nice tonal shift and some decent tunes, but wasn't mega keen.
