More Specials

I laughed when I saw the title. “More Specials.” Our group in particular didn’t love “Specials,” so now we’re treated to “More.” This will be fun. For their first album... I think I gave it a higher rating than it deserved, just because this type of skinhead punk/ska was new to me, and “A Message To You Rudy” is undeniable. A fun record. It doesn't have a lot of the *crunch* of reggae records. Nor the really insane pockets that those players have, the ones that make your whole body bounce. It's more clean. Nothing wrong with this. I mean, this kind of cross-pond ska and reggae was so pervasive when I was younger, I get the reason they're inspired. I certainly didn't mind this record, and the parts about it that are funny, strange, campy are things that I also like. I also like the library records, the really strange and creative ska and dub records of this period that these guys are clearly inspired by. If this came out today, it'd actually be pretty prestigious... this kind of thing is championed by some big producers today. It would also probably lean into its influences more, sonically. They'd get the bass tone dead on, they'd have more pocket to their rhythms. But it's also a little... boring? The music is very full and generic for a listener today, or anyone familiar with ska or reggae, and it kind of just rolls of you. It's not surprising. A lot of more generic instrumental tracks. Also the drop off in energy for the 7-minute "Stereotype" track is real. That track just goes on... forever! I have questions. That's what my two's are for. 2/5

Listen, I'm never going to be into ska. It's just not going to happen. The Specials on this album, in particular, embody just about everything that I dislike about the genre. It's silly at best and vapid at worst. There's very little substance here. It's mostly just goofy horns and gang vocals and it gets annoying really fast.

Ik ben geen fan van koperen blazers, dus ska is een lastig genre voor me. De zang is bij sommige nummers aardig lelijk en vaak zit er ook nog teveel reverb op, wat het nóg lelijker maakt. Her en der is het best catchy. "Pearl's Cafe" vind ik bijvoorbeeld best leuk, tot huismerk Astrud Gilberto op 1:28 te fanatiek mee gaat doen. Later op het album krijg ik nog meer Astrud flashbacks bij het nummer waarvan de titel dan ook perfect gekozen is: "I can't stand it". 'International Jet Set' was m'n favoriete track; een soort lichte koortsdroom met een soundtrack van The Strokes. Dit album doet z'n best om 1 ster te krijgen maar daarvoor gebeuren er toch nog teveel leuke dingen.

This was going pretty well until they decided to stop in the middle and poorly appropriate a bunch of cultural music they couldn’t/shouldn’t have executed.

I don't know man, I think this one had more variety to it than the previous Specials album (hence the name "More Specials" I guess?), but I didn't get much out of it, and ultimately may have liked it less. Any time we get multiple albums from a band that I'm certain we'd be fine getting just one album from, they turn out to be British. Favorite tracks: Do Nothing, Stereotype. Album Art: Band photo I presume? Just a group of guys, maybe a girl in there too? I don't even know if I'm looking at the band here. This seems like one of those greatest hits platinum collection type of covers. 2.5/5

Goofy in an annoying way. Their first album with Elvis Costello behind the boards is alright, but this is just unfocused mania. I can see how this influenced bands like Blur, but Blur used much more discretion in the way they incorporated this type of playfulness. Sounds like a band in the midst of an identity crisis.

Not that special.

I don't get this. It is bad. There are some parts where it's actually decent, but then I feel like the Artists intentionally make it bad. The instrumentals are fine, but with the lyrics on top of them, it becomes bad.

Nothing about this album sticks out to me.

Songs that sound almost like novelty tracks. A peculiar mix of party music, social commentary and comedy, The Specials were certainly talented but all ideas made it to this album and not all are great. An album to endure rather than enjoy.

I have a hard time trying to objectively understand the value of ska as a music style – or at least this variety of ska. Descriptions that popped into my head as I listened to this album: too upbeat, unusual hints of Caribbean music, happy vomit, jamming that someone recorded.

This is Ska and I’m not a fan. I’ve heard worse but this just not really my kind of music.

I was a bit disappointed with this album, not the polished ska sound I was expecting. It's very evocative of singalongs in a pub in the early 80s (at least I would imagine so, I was only in my infant years at the time) - see "it's all a load of bollocks!" for example.

I saw this was labeled as "Ska" but didn't feel that way to me. The second to last track (International Jet Set) was the only one I sort of got into. Caity listened to some of this one with me and commented "Do we have to listen to the whole album?"

It was Specials! For real, it wasn't terrible just not something I would reach for or revisit.

I honestly feel like a broken record. While this was not nearly as bad as the album from yesterday. It is not something i would listen to willingly. It does not get 1 star from me for two reasons. There was a track in there rather catchy unfortunately not catchy enough for me to remember the name but it was towards the top. And all of the album was tolerable to some degree or other. But it's definitely not my cup of tea

I was enjoying this and its use of an early ska sound with the brass and then I started getting annoyed with the album at Stereotype Pt 2.

I like the Specials but this didn't need to be on this list.

Back in my day Ska was upbeat and in your face. That's a weird comment considering that this incarnation predates the Ska of my youth. Anyway. It's fine. I don't dislike it. But I don't like. It had an okay sense of humor.

Interesting because the influences seem to span multiple decades. But also it's still very ska and I couldn't get into it.

J’ai eu peur quand la première toune est partie. Je me suis dit « ok, the Specials, c’est le diminutif de enfant spécial ». Mais bon, ça s’est placé après. Il y a du bon et du mauvais. J’ai bien aimé International Jet Set. Des fois c’est faux, des fois c’est croche (je ne parle pas du Feel Ska ici). Dans l’ensemble, c’est un beau party de monde qui ne se prennent pas au sérieux.

I like the Specials, but this gets on my nerves not even half-way through. In doses, the Specials are great, an entire album will drive you to hate them.

I've never understand why ska music is so popular. I can't take more than 5 minutes at once, or I became violent. The song "Do Nothing" was nice, at least. "Stereotype" has something special, but was way too long.

Not a whole lot to say about this one. It is pretty weird and all over the place, and while I did not hate it at all, it is not something I would necessarily want to come back to. You can tell the band was inspired by 50s/60s pop music while incorporating some unique reggae/post-punk elements. The vocalist and musical style kind of reminded me of Dexy's Midnight Runners, but I am not too familiar with their work. Overall, there were some catchy moments and fun ideas here, but it was a bit too strange for me. 2.5/5.

I love the Specials self titled debut. It's a great album. This album is not. The songs sound as much like novelty songs as serious music. Maybe it would I.prove with further listens however nothing in this initial listen is sufficiently interesting to warrant a deeper dive.....accept Stereotype/Stereotype Pt. 2. Can't give it more than 2.5 stars

It gets better, a bit grittier, the longer you leave it on. Heading towards their signature, downbeat, negative sound they were most noted for. Perhaps harshly.

Based on reviews I had read prior, I expected something more eclectic and interesting. Its not terrible, but I found it very dissapointing, and I dont think it needs to be on the list.

Not my style

My only familiarity with The Specials is from their appearance on Saturday Night Live back in 1980, which I really enjoyed at the time--it was fun and high energy. So, on to More Specials, the Specials' second album. I loathe pub singalongs, so album opener Enjoy Yourself (It's Later Than You Think) left me cold with it's overly busy, fumbling arrangement and belted choruses. Fortunately, the Specials are more competent than the opening tune would indicate. Man At C & A demonstrates their mastery of the dub style, with some spaghetti western affectations. With Hey Little Rich Girl, they're back to ska. The vocals and lyrics are very punk -- it's an interesting combination. For me, the Specials' version of ska is a little clumsy and on the nose compared to the Jamaican original, but I understand the appeal. Clearly The Specials love, love, love Jamaican music and have made a real effort to understand it. It's an extension of Britain's appreciation of Jamaican music, exemplified by the absolutely fantastic Tighten Up series, which I highly recommend if you have even a passing interest in Jamaican popular music of the late 60s and early 70s. The rest of More Specials proceeds along the same lines, a British working class take on ska and it's variations. For me, it's largely superfluous. I'd rather listen to the real thing.

Not horrible, but noy really that good. The music tries to be upbeat for the most part, but it’s a bit of a ska, reggae, pop- rock mess. 2.5 stars, and rounding down because there isn’t one song or riff that I want hear again.

I am not a fan of this one. They sound like their competent musicians(especially the keyboards, which sound amazing and the horns were good too) but it seems like this is a bunch of friends jamming in a dive bar for the free drinks.The singing isn't too good (and is washed out at times " do nothing" by the instruments)and the whole Ska idea is lost on me. I mean it's not terrible but it seems the song all pass through me as backround music and there isn't anything of note for me here.

Kind of strange, not really my cup of tea, kind of goofy and bouncy.

If any of you are gamers, there's a game called Psychonauts. For anyone who hasn't played it, the game's premise is that you are a psychological warrior - literally. You have psychic powers which allows you to enter people's minds and experience and literally battle their personal demons, their baggage, and their trauma. The soundtrack is very similar to this album and the second song in particular "Man at C&A" sounds like it heavily inspired the music in that game. Unlike the game, however, this album is not enjoyable and only has a few shining moments. "Do Nothing" is okay and is one of the better songs on the album and "International Jet Set" was at least musically interesting. Most of the songs are just highly repetitive ska/reggae tunes with the most snaggle-toothed pub crawling British mofo singing/talking over the tracks. I guess this was album was added to this list because you have to hear what bad music is to understand what good music is. I gave their first album a 4/10, I'll give this one a 2/10. Thank goodness I'm done with this band.

This album reviewed itself on "Pearl's Cafe" - "It's all a load of Bollocks" The "singing" is rubbish. I can't tell if it's intentionally that way or this album is a parody of something and it's designed to be bad. At times the music is better - "Sock It to 'Em J.B" had some good brass and bass work but oh dear god someone tell the vocalists to leave... Shouting out names of Bond titles is meh at the best. Whoever decided this should be on the 1001 to listen before you die was probably giving a clue to someone he wanted to buy it. To quote track 9: "I can't stand it" "International Jet Set" is perhaps the best song on the album. The reprise at the end is a waste of time and recording space. 1.5 stars... Gonna round this one down

546/1089 - This could've been Special Beat Service or I Just Can't Stop It. Mirror in the Bathroom, Tears of a Clown, I Confess, and Save it For Later are so good and showcase the potential of 2Tone way more than this wet fart of an album. Stereotype is kinda neat though I guess, at least for the first bit before it turns into vamp nonsense. Mainly I have an issue with the voices being pretty weak shouty and pitchy and the melodies sticking to one or two notes for a majority of time like a lot of 21st century pop.

It's so strange, there are so many aspects of that *should* work, but they just really really don't.

This was truly awful to listen to. I had no idea how this got made and who thought anyone else should listen to it. It's like they took the worst part of some different genres like SKA, reggae and pop and blended it together with terrible voices. I wish I could get that time back. The not so specials

How do I describe this....weird vibes, blahhhhh, generic, trying too hard to be other music genres?

The Specials as a band, as a concept, and as a historical group all are a group I support 120%, and the same goes for what ska meant as a cultural off-shoot of punk. But man….I really hate listening to ska. I didn’t like their first album, but I understood why it was included. More Specials, though…….no, absolutely not. This is a cheese grater against my ears. This is hokey and annoying and cheap and watered-down reggae, which I don’t even like that much, and the songs here all fucking suck. I didn’t need a second album on this list from The Specials, but having it in my hands, I now also wish it wasn’t in the world period. I don’t know how anyone could listen to these songs and be into it. At its best, it’s boring reggae; at its worst, it’s 80s British pop music with too much horns and bad vocals and cheesy, cheesy, cheesy songwriting. This was a pain for me to sit through. I went in with an open mind because of who The Specials are as a group, but I really dislike who The Specials are as makers of music. Hated this so much, unfortunately.

I really am at a loss. I’m not sure what this is. I was glad to hear some trombone in the mix and was moderately horrified at the rest! It’s like a bad reggae group decided to listen to a bunch of Jonathan Richman and then take some dissociatives.

A SKA band that is BRITISH??? Literally I would rather you just stab me. I can't believe this band has (at least) two records on this list when I could think of five records from the past 6 months that deserve it more. The first track is 3:41 in length and I was checking how much time is left before it was half over.

That voice does sound pretty special. How dare they tell me to enjoy myself right before showing me the most obnoxious near hour of my life. Maybe if we tell them to like it they'll like it? "It's all a load of bullocks," Yeah I'd be inclined to agree. Who let the most stereotypical British chaps into a kindergarten music room anyways? They sound like they're trying to mock a British accent yet be even more disappointing. The tunes are fairy-tale like, but not the fun ones. Not the ones with cute dogs and rainbows. The ones where the child gets horrifically eaten because they didn't eat their vegetables but with the veneer of troubled kid's play music. A fate better than listening to this album. You do have to get give them props for being so daring to stray away from what makes music good though. It's a solid 1/5 and if I could give it lower I would. Giving themselves a 2 in the corner is pretty generous I think. Less Specials please.

"Enjoy Yourself", along with its reprise, are like the song "It's a Small World After All": songs that will drive one to insanity if played on a loop. This album could go on the list of albums that I could have gone a lifetime without hearing. Ladies and gentlemen: The Mundanes!

Ska is just not for me. I tried

I put up with the first Specials album (gave it 3 stars, when I probably should have given it 2). I'm currently four songs into this album, and I hate it. And it never got better. Pearl's Cafe is a war crime.

Reminds me of shitty Christmas songs

The music is fine but the vocals are AWFUL and the mixing seemed to be done by an amateur. Half the songs sounded "muddy", the music overwhelmed the vocals (which may have been a blessing) and the other half the vocals and the music didn't blend together and sounded like a bad demo tape. Also the female voice that did "harmony" on some of the tracks was just horrendous.

This was a particularly bad album. The songs were pretty bizarre and it felt that they were unpolished. All this makes sense when I read they were an early ska style band. Ingenuitive to some they may be but to me this was pretty tough to get through. 3.3/10

Eccentric album, a song about James Bond? Reggae? Feels very British, sounds semi-Caribbean. Not particularly my cuppa.
