Reviews (page 6 of 8)
This grows on me over the course of the album. Talking Heads 2.0. They have the same effect. The lyrics snuck up on me- I was halfway through before I realized how lovely and sarcastic they were.
I waved goodbye to death metal a long time ago to take on this style as my jam, so stuff like this is always a treat. I like most of this, finding it to be something if a mix tape in terms of styles.
This grew on me as I listened through it. I don't really know LCD Soundsystem though and I can't imagine 2017 was the peak of their relevance. The dense synthy stuff was great but I didn't find the lyrics or the vocals particularly great
Interesting album, reminded me of OMD and Joy Division, but some tracks were more dance than electronica. Really liked "emotional haircut", and quite liked "black screen".
Not among my favorite LCD Soundsystem albums, but good nonetheless.
Good stuff. 3.5/5
I enjoyed it. Listened 2x.
This gay has great ideas but doesn’t know when a song must end before it becomes utterly boring
I was ready to hate this album after the first 4 songs. Luckily, after that the songs got better and overall I did enjoy the rest of it.
I can see why James and the gang wanted to come back. Don't think it's their best work, but a great collection of lcd songs with a slightly more moodier tone. Definitely a story they wanted told.
Singles are the weakest part of this album and it really doesn't belong on this list, but a solid album nonetheless. 3/5
Day 99 As someone who's contemplating the possibility of dramatically trimming down their record collection, I wonder if this is really essential. I haven't heard much from LCD Soundsystem but I understand that the one to go is their first album? I haven't checked the book yet, but I am curious as to why the authors picked this one. Most of the songs sound like U2, a couple other songs sound like Talking Heads (these are the ones that I enjoyed more), on one song he seems to be impersonating David Bowie (not the one that is dedicated to the White Duke, black screen); the title track is dedicated to the late Alan Vega and sounds like Suicide in a vague kind of way. The last two songs were more ambient oriented and the ones that I found more interesting, even if they do sound late 90s; elsewhere it's all very pleasant if derivative, which doesn't mean it's a bad album, only that it doesn't give me enough reasons to get back to it. Rating: No idea, Mate.
I want to like LCD Soundsystem more than I actually do. It was OK.
3.5, didn’t like the last track but leading up to it with quite good. Very distinctive sound but still would prefer an older album of theirs
Kept waiting for this to get interesting but no go. Enjoyable listen. Not a 'Poor mans" but a "middle class suburban mans" David Byrne. I haven't heard the three albums from thier heyday.
It's fine.
This dance-rock hybrid is surely something worthwhile to listen to, on a drive or a when you clean your house. But if you inspect it closer it's all a bit too similar.
I can't decide if this is a Eno/Talking Heads rip off or good homage to them. Some good songs for sure but as a album it doesn't work as well as the older stuff. It's a 3.5.
Band sounds like a Talking Heads cover band but not done as well. It's fine, but nothing that I'm looking forward to listening to again.
Heavily indebted to Bowie and New Order. Mostly good fun indie electro-clash dance music.
Kinda dig it, then kinda don't.
This is a David Byrne cover band that decided to record their own music. Is what I would have told you if you played this album for me without context. I keep waiting for it to become compelling. A fine example of the subjective nature of music.
Not a classic, but fine as an album. The hype is mostly self-created by LCD themselves. Stick to Sound of Silver and This is Happening
Quite enjoyable, but no tracks to love straight away, so 3*.
Very synth-heavy new wave and alternative dance album. It’s a little inconsistent in quality in my view; I really like some of the more atmospheric tracks such as the title track, however the some of the more upbeat ones where he’s talk-singing a little don’t have the same effect for me. The highlights are very good though and the low points aren’t terrible.
It's fine. That's about all I can say.
Ok Album
Surprisingly enjoyed some of this. Never heard of this group before.
The last LCD album I’d put on this list is the only LCD album on this list. There are individual tracks here I love, but the whole thing goes overlong (which is strange to say for an LCD album).
Same old same old. Not worth reforming for, though.
Considering LCD have at least 3 classic albums that seem universally loved and that I haven't heard, it feels a little lame for this to be their first LP I listen to in full. It's like, fine though.
A pleasant listen, not usually what I would listen to, but enjoyable enough. I can hear a lot of different influences and musical styles, so it was interesting, though I had it on mainly as background music.
Like a modern ELO
Weirdly I do not hate this
3/5 I enjoyed the synthetic sound of this album, and the first song, but the rest just blurred together. Wasn't a stand out album for me, but it wasn't terrible either.
Whoops, missed a few... Break aside though, this had some interesting parts but dragged on waaaaaaay too long. 90 mins does not a good album make. On to the next one(s)!
I prefer led
LCD soundsystem is great, no idea why they picked this album and not the first one with all the hits.
Seemed to be a bit of a chore to listen to the entire thing but almost every single song has a payoff near the end. I was surprised to enjoy the lyrical content so much as well. Overall a really good listen. I'll be coming back to this band more often for sure.
It's the 2017 version of Talking Heads. I liked it, I just wish the songs weren't so looong
eh
Not bad
I remember listening it when it released, didn't really live up to the hype, but there's some good songs in there anyway
3/5. I’ve listen to LCD sound system’s earlier stuff and this doesn’t have that kick and punch that the others have. Sure I may like it better if it was the LCD album I listened to but even then, not awesome. Still good but nowhere near perfect.
Good album gets a bit repetitive
Wasn’t a thorough listen but enjoyable and promising for a second listen
Another one I enjoyed. Had my attention from the start and lost me at certain bits, too. Tonite and American Dream were the stand outs for me. Giving it a high 3
I thought there were a few bangers on here but it needs trimming down. 68 mins is just a few too many songs for me.
First track was kinda cool, I like the retro synth vibes but ultimately I will forget that I listened to this
This would have gotten a 1 from me if not for the title track. I liked that a lot. Everything else should have been on the cutting room floor.
Quite liked it. Different.
I have never listened to this band and never really got the hype. This album was enjoyable enough to listen to while doing things around the house.
While it was nice to get another LCD Soundsystem album in 2017, I struggle to think of anything particularly remarkable about it. It was decent, but not about to win over anyone who didn't already like them. So its inclusion here is just baffling to be honest. Especially considering how few albums per year post-2000 are allowed into the book. Sound of Silver is here elsewhere so LCD are accounted for. All the more egregious when I recall I've already had the XX album nobody knew existed from this year (now removed) I'm just thinking about other things released in 2017 that are more deserving. Breakthrough albums for artists, albums that move music in interesting directions. It's perhaps not a vintage year, but you have St Vincent- Masseduction. Richard Dawson - Peasant. Run the Jewels. Heck if you want a comeback album there was the Slowdive and Sparks albums. Anyway, this is still good. Takes a good while to get going but its got some decent tracks on it.
Not bad but honestly drags for way too long. Saved tracks: oh baby, how do you sleep?, tonite, american dream
it's ok
01 - 7 02 - 8 03 - 7 04 - 6,5 05 - 8 06 - 7 07 - 5,5 08 - 7 09 - 6 10 - 7 Instrumentaly, it's very intersting, the production is very good on most tracks, but the sing is not my style.
The beats/instrumentals are really cool. The lyrics leave much to be desired though. Favorite track: tonite
6/10 a few really good tracks, but overall pretty weird and weaker than I expected
Fun and Dancey! I knew their earlier stuff, but this album had passed me by. I found a lot of it quite derivative, but that did not detract from how easy it was to jiggle along to. It surprised me how much I found this a rollicking fun ride. It actually made me want to go back to the earlier albums again. Definitely an easy and enjoyable listen! Not quite a 4 but 3 doesn’t quite do it justice. Pretend it’s a 3.5.
I didn't get to listen to this album in its entirety. I do like electronic music and how the sounds and rhythms are combined. I like the vocals but they don't always seem to fit. This is definitely an album that I need to be in the right head space to enjoy. I'll probably revisit this album at a later date but I don't think it's a necessity.
the 80's, now
Not a 2 or a 4 for me. Strong 3. Was alright. I could listen to it.
Good album - 3 stars
Decent
The production is fantastic and the beats are damn good. It's dreamy and atmospheric, and the songs take their time to find their groove and dance around in it. I don't think it's LCDS's best crop of songs, but it's got a lot going for it
Sounds like straight outa the 80’s. My wif would like it.
interesting album, definitely not something i would normally listen to, but i did end up enjoying it a lot.
it's self-reflexive, derivative, and juvenile, but it's honest and it's got some hooks
3.5
Some bangers, mostly meh
its fine
This album had several songs that were very good.
This was ok. I like most of the songs, but don't really love any of it. Very quality production though. The album feels older to me than it is and I got a strong Talking Heads vibe from it. I feel that I should enjoy it more, but it doesn't move me to much. It is passable as background music for me, but I'd probably never choose it.
The bears/instrumentals are really cool. The lyrics leave much to be desired though. Favorite track: tonite
A warning for the faint of heart: at some point towards the end of track number 9, and this without any preliminary precautions or foretelling signs, LCD Soundsystem decided to use a *different* chord from the one they'd been using since the start of the 5-minute song (or is it since the start the whole album? Or maybe their whole discography?). It's, for all intents or purposes, a devastating twist. The history of modern music might never recover from such a bold move. Consider yourselves warned here. All sarcasm aside, this is *not* a bad album. The overall tone is pretty dark, which is a good thing, actually (and justifies its "monotone" nature harmonically speaking). James Murphy channels his inner David Bowie and inner David Byrne in quite effective ways, and if some of the lyrics are a bit on the nose, they are still painting a compelling picture of what growing old means for all of us. Some of the flaws soon become endearing here, they are part of the entropic nature of the subject matter, and as such, they make sense somehow. That being said, this is definitely not the best entry point into LCD Soundsystem, because the line between endearing flaws and ones that can break the charm in a second is still very thin overall in *American Dream*. And to be honest, the whole context around this record makes it somewhat suspicious. Always found it weird that James Murphy publicly announced the end of the band during the early 2010s, to then suddenly change his mind about it only five or six years later. Murphy has obviously never been a "reliable" storyteller, as his art proves now and again. But just like the music on this record, there's something a little superficial and hollow in such a last-minute decision. If you're in the right despondent mood, the blatant sense of desperation Murphy might have felt when he changed his mind again may talk to you. But there are other ways to appreciate music than wallowing in complacency or self-indulgence. And this, even for the darkest sorts of it out there... Number of albums left to review: 754 Number of albums from the list I find relevant enough to be mandatory listens: 122 Albums from the list I *might* include in mine later on: 61 (including this one) Albums from the list I will certainly *not* include in mine (many others are more important): 64
Electric acid Talking Heads. On paper I should like this band, but I find them a bit annoying.
I enjoyed this album much more the first listen through rather than the second time. I think that's because once you've heard it, you've heard it you know. Its definitely not my preferred genre, but regardless I thought it was decent. When I listened to it a second time, I found myself much more bored. I don't think there is much more to discover after first listen. The best track is the title track for me, along with 'black screen'. Probably won't listen to it again. 2.75/5
Lots of good sounds mashed into long songs, not bad
Miellyttävä saundi ja ihan jees sanatkin. 3/5.
why is it two albums? the electronic album is fun, the punk rock record is okay. it feels try hard. it feels like he wants me to believe hes a very clever boy cause he can put a really long post punk song next to a really long dance pop electro song. its not. its lazy. make a record with two sides or a double lp with two sonic profiles. silly. anyway. it sounds like an lcd soundsystem album. except with less energy. wonder why?
-ish.
Was at a wedding in the Cotswolds (Penny) when this album came up so didn’t have time to give it my full attention. I liked what I heard
A sad voice you can dance to.
I saw them that year at Coachella, to me this album was not as good as the previous ones, maybe it was just the over expectations. I like the Bowiesque sound
Completely forgettable 80s sounding album from 2017. Ridiculous and unnecessary entry on a must hear list of albums.
Sounds like Bono found out about electricity. Nothing special
"It's got a good beat and you can dance to it" Do you love a massive synth bass sound? I fucking do and this album starts with one a great one. However... the rest of the album sounds like LCD Soundsystem. "i used to" has some more cool synth sounds that remind me of the artists and albums that the band seems to draw inspiration from: British character-driven-post-human rock from Bowie and Numan and German robot bands like Can and Kraftwerk. What I find missing in this album -- and other work by LCD Soundsystem -- is a compelling narrator for the trip we are taken on throughout the course of the record. Maybe I'm distracted by the music and the way all of the instrumentation is mixed so carefully to create lush tracks that demand attention. The final song is the exception to this rule and fits well as an album closer.
This is kind of a tough one because ... it's interesting. It's weird, it's different. A lot of homages to 80s synth pop. But I'm not yet sure how *enjoyable* it is? I very much enjoy a lot of Brian Eno and this is definitely giving me an Eno vibe so it might be one that requires patience? The leadoff track "o baby" is a nice melodic start, although becomes a bit repetitive, and doesn't necessarily tip off the listener to the rest. I did notice a huge Talking Heads feel to a bunch of these, including "other voices" and "change yr mind" I will note that "call the police" bucks the challenging trend; it's immediately accessible and is a great tune if not a touch too long. Labeled a few places as "dance music" but it's way more challenging overall. I feel like you put this on in a random group of 10 people and 4 will call it an all-time greatest album, 4 will call it the worst garbage they've ever heard, and 2 will just be confused. Kind of an accomplishment, actually. Even though it's occasionally a hair too abrasive for my likes ("emotional haircut" for one) and I prefer the less-aggressive tracks, this is worth a few listens at minimum. 6/10 3 stars.
Intro overshadowed the rest of the album. Amazing track. The rest of the album is musically very interesting, but the vocals feel like a bad 80's impression.
A bit of an oddity. It SEEMS quite good but its also very samey and needs an editor
Rhythmic and bassy, slightly drawn out. Arcade fire reflector mix. Emotionally normal-sadish
fine. a little too indie for my tastes.
Expectations were too high and this album was a disappointment.
not my favorite of theirs but some hits
Use of "oh baby" in Booksmart is one of my fav needle drops. More cowbell! I like the swirly whirly "american dream". Not my favorite of theirs but still several songs I really like, mixed in with some pretty annoying ones.
Enjoyed the synthy and more experimental stuff. Felt very talking heads to me in a good way.
Ok. Love the early LCD albums. Saw them twice then really went off them. Mostly because they made such a big deal of breaking up with big farewell gig, film, live album etc etc. then reforming a few years later. It all sucked. The 3rd album gave indication that they were running out of ideas and the magpie-ing of other artists was getting a bit wearing. Anyway. Play. I guess i wanted to really dislike this but its ok. There are lots of Berlin era Bowie references and slow Talking Heads funk. It doesn't have the killer tunes of Sound of Silver but its as good as the 3rd one. Decent.
I've now listened to the album 4 times and I still don't know how I feel about it. It's got all the ingredients for me to enjoy it, but it has all gone past me very easily and nothing has stuck. A few times my ears pricked up with interesting parts of the (long) songs, but overall it just failed to hold my attention. Enjoyable listen, would never turn it off if it was playing somewhere, but not groundbreaking for me.
I was listening to NASA recordings from space before this - they went together well. A new album for me which I enjoyed.
It’s pretty good, few very good songs, just wasn’t really my cup of tea on a first listen. Feel like it would probably grow on me with a few listens though
The album got better as it went along. Couple gems on here. 3/5
surprisingly boring even though electronic alternative music is some of my favorite
Could do with some editing to make a shorter, tighter and better album. Lose the first and last tracks, for instance.
I like LCD Soundsystem, and I was happy to hear they're back, but: I don't think this album merits inclusion in a list of "records to die for". At the time I listened to it, got the point, and moved on. Now, several years later, it sounds fairly unremarkable. I prefer their older albums.
I liked the album, sounded a lot like music my buddy sends me so I am not sure what made this a "must listen." Also points lost for the uninspired album art but maybe I just don't get it!
Started off hoping it was more like Kraftwerk, motoric and repetitive. Disappointed the more it reminded me of U2. Idk.
I love some of LCD Soundsystem's work but this just washes over me. A decent listen but I will go back and give their other albums a relisted instead
Mezcla de pop y algo de electrónica. Instrumental. Quizás para escuchar en modo reposado.
It’s a little long and definitely not LCD’s best album, and there is still a sour taste in my mouth after the whole retirement controversy.
Not bad. Not amazing. Some tracks hit harder than others but overall I liked it.
It was fine. Idk. There were since good parts done bad parts
3/5
I am and remain LCD Soundsystem neutral
3.75
Dit vond ik echt heel tof!
Talking Heads/Echo and the Bunnymen style, electro pop. I really liked a few tracks...and had to skip a few as they were too repetitive and purposely out of key. A mixed bag.
forgettable
it's aight
it's okay, very repetitive to be honest
Passable, not their best
Just ok really. Not something I’d put on, but wouldn’t necessarily turn it off either.
I like this one better than Sound of Silver. Catchy and more interesting with a good vibe - but also still nothing to make me say "I've got to listen to that album again!". Thus, it doesn't rise above a 3.
Sort of alright. Quite pleasant background music for work. Can't say that I really understand what merits this album's inclusion on the list.
Moderne disco-rock, elektronisk new wave, blanding at uptempo og ballader, stemningsfyldt
It's not bad, but I personally enjoy LCD Soundsystem's earlier work. Still an enjoyable album to listen to.
Pretty chill, liked it the most when a track sounded as if it could fit well into a video game soundtrack.
Good overall. Some very Talking Heads bits throughout. Not one that I would listen to with regularity.
Pretty good, very 80s feel. I’ll probably listen to these guys again.
Solid but nowhere near their prime.
This is the only LCD Soundsystem albums I hadn’t heard before. When I saw the recommendation I listened to it once but I was out of the house so I couldn’t dance. I figured I didn’t love it as much as other projects because I couldn’t really get into it physically, which other albums of LCD have called for. So I excitedly listened to it again, and started dancing. I made it half way through and turned it off. I was bored… Eh. I really really like LCD Soundsystem. I do. I really hope that their other albums are on this list because there is NO DAMN WAY that this beat out the others. Like another user said, it’s too “this” to be “that” and too “that” to be “this”. I want to dance, but it’s not groovy enough. I want to appreciate the weird post-punky guitar stuff that is more upfront than others albums. But they aren’t focused on enough. It’s in this really weird purgatory limbo situation. It just doesn’t have the vibe. It just doesn’t have.. the vibe. Still not offensive.
I mean... it's alright? There were a couple of fun tracks. A couple of stupid tracks (I'm looking at you, "how do you sleep?"). When it was all said and done, I realized that it really hadn't left much of an impression on me. And that just doesn't seem like something you generally want out of an album, does it?
Didn't hate it. Pretty good writing. Not really my style, but wouldn't likely listen again.
Better than I expected it to be. With a few exceptions (Kraftwerk, Air, Daft Punk, Royksopp) I'm not really into electronic music. This didn't make me want to add this lot to that list. It was interesting enough, but it reminded me of other things I'd rather be listening to.
Decent
Liked the sound of this one and some tracks have the potential to be growers, especially 'how do you sleep'.
Normal
Fine
Average, gets better towards the end
31st January 2022 Listened in the morning on my phone while working. Had a chilled evening watching the Witcher. LCD go full talking heads with a little of their old indie spark left in for the older fans. 3.5 if I could.
techno alternative? It's a nice-ish sound. Some of it is more over synthesized than other songs. I'd listen to it again, maybe. I'd say it's more decent than most.
it's pretty cool... has an simple electronic vibe combined with a david bowie/fashion esthetic. you definitely need to be patient as it ventures deep in repetition and droning. still i can listen to pretty much everything but "emotional haircut"... i don't think it's possible to repeat that phrase multiple times and have a good song. pretty interesting.
I love LCD Soundsystem but this is an odd choice to include in 1001 albums. I'd place any of their other albums above it. It's still a good album but nowhere near their peak. I'd argue it's the only one NOT justified in being here.
This was a really good album, didn't know what to expect and was pleasantly surprised!
I'd avoided the LCD Soundsystem for so many years and tbh I was expecting something a bit self-indulgent. This is that but it's not a bad album. There are some good songs in the mix - and honestly, the shorter ones are the better. Also, sometimes they feel a bit too much like a Talking Heads tribute band. Again, not necessarily a bad thing but the Talking Heads already exist.
few good songs, but most of this album i cant listen to anymore
Their weakest album but still pretty good
Dragged a bit
i'm not 25 anymore
Not LCDs best album but it’s still a decent listen. Like all lcd albums there are plenty of interesting beats and some long strands of instrumentals. Not much of a standout track on this one. It felt a bit long and could’ve been shorter. 5.9/10
6/10
It was okay, I guess. A bit more normal than I'm used to from LCD Soundsystem.
A solid LCD Soundsystem album not as good as Sound of Silver (5-star) or This Is Happening (4-star). I would rate it somewhere between a 3 and a 4 as it contains quite a few 4-star songs and not any real weak songs, although the closing track Black Screen is a bit tedious.
I liked it.
A more modern but more boring take on Echo and the Bunnymen
Talking heads for a new generation
I’ve never been a big fan but found myself nodding along at times. That said, it went on way too long near the end
Listenable........but I would seek out again 3*
Strange one. Very 80's revival. Liked the electro-sounding stuff like American Dream, Black Screen and some of the rest passed me by.
See, this is still weird but it's not the weird like the other album. There's something more palatable about this one. I still don't love it, but it's better.
Sort of Synthwave vibe.
OK but not the best LCD Soundsystem record by a long way
Oh, the revolution was here That would set you free from those bourgeoisie For some, electronica rock makes everything clearer But my review exposes my age - or taste
oh baby good rest bad
I'm not much into electronica, but this is a great album to just throw on and vibe to.
I didn't think this was outstanding and probably not my favourite in LCD Soundsystem record. Too long as well.
I've never wanted to hate something as bad as I wanted to hate this album. I wanted to hate it so badly that I almost refused to even listen to it. It wasn't just because of that infernal album cover. As if that wasn't enough, all of the songs are titled in all lowercase letters. It all made me want to hate it with the white hot intensity of 1,000 Suns. I was all loaded up with thoughtful zingers like "Bad U2 cover band" and "The Talking Heads without David Byrne". And wouldn't you know it: This damn album became Green Eggs and Ham. It grabbed me from the first song and seemingly never let go...Until they ended with a monotonous 12 minute song that basically destroyed all the goodwill the previous 9 songs had built. You couldn't fool me, LCD Soundsystem. Go sell synth-pop somewhere else. We're all stocked up here.
Synth game 10/10
Listen when high
Not my kind, but fair
This is just reflektor but 4 years late and not as awesome
Rating: 5/10
indie background music
Sounding like a nostalgic tribute to the neurotic new-wave of the late 1970s. Like Talking Heads, Bowie etc.(6/10) FT: oh baby
Feels too recent to have any perspective. A good comeback and has some great tracks, but too much filler to be up with their earlier albums
I largely ignored this one at the time. A bit strange, because I was a big fan of the breakout singles a decade or so earlier. Listening to it now I think I was right to pay not too much attention to it. Maybe you get more out of it if you listen to the words but it doesn't half go on a bit, does it? The production is nice. Bit Human League. Bit Bowie. But my god, those songs are long. 6/10
not my favorite, but not not my favorite. music for boys
Interesting. Dynamic. But terribly engaging but I enjoyed the music. Lots of moods.
Definitely enjoyed this. I liked the first track so much I thought this might make it to a 4, but alas the rest of the album wasn't as memorable.
I was initially quite captivated, but that gradually decreased by the end of the album. That being said, I still would give another listen. The vibes were interesting here, and this was my first try at LCD Soundsystem (after hearing SO much about them).
I love LCD Soundsystem with my whole heart. James Murphy is god's gift to music lovers and I'll stand by that. Truth be told, I was late to the party. By the time they had released three spectacular studio albums, broken up, and gotten back together again, I was only just getting around to trying Sound of Silver (easily in my top 5 favorite albums of all time). So when this album came out, I experienced it at around the same time I experienced the rest of LCD's other albums. At the time, I found it very underwhelming. Compared to weight that Sound of Silver and This Is Happening was pulling, American Dream felt like an album made out of necessity. As if "okay, we got the band back together and now we need to get enough songs for an album. We've got a few great ideas here but still need some more things to flesh it out", which leads us to a somewhat underwhelming tracklist. The opening songs, Oh Baby and Other Voices, feel like they're trying to approach prior LCD songs, but never quite reach the same heights and end up being perfectly acceptable. Not bad, not great either. Just acceptable. However, other songs on here, like Change Yr Mind and How Do You Sleep?, are clear standout tracks with fantastic production and dynamics that hit different. Though I still believe that LCD mastered the art of song dynamics on Dance Yrself Clean, these songs can still hang with the best of em. Worth noting, I think, that this album partially exists because of David Bowie. James Murphy had the great opportunity to play on Blackstar and talk with Bowie before his death. His discussion with Bowie led Murphy to become inspired about his own music and it drove him to contacting the other members to kick-start the band again. To what extent Bowie's influence is on this album, I can't really say, but I appreciate a good story nonetheless. Anyway, Tonight is also a clear standout track. Probably the most pop-y on the album, it's got a great synth bassline and motorik drums to keep the pace while James Murphy muses (as he does so well) and the other elements of the song build in and drop out. Of the many tools in LCD's toolbox, repetition is probably the one used the most. And this is because repetition legitimizes. And when repetition legitimizes, the song has a solid foundation for build off of. It is the essence of LCD Soundsystem's sound, so if you can't get down with that then you probably can't get down with most of their catalogue. THAT'S DANCE-PUNK, BAYBEE. The run from Change Yr Mind to Call The Police is great stuff, but it sinks back into being just acceptable by the title track. I think that, at the end of the day, I'm always gonna love LCD Soundsystem through thick and thin. Even if I don't love every album or every song, they're a band that has done so much great work that I can't not give them credit. This album, though, is definitely the low point in their discography. I can't wait to listen to the rest of LCD Soundsystem on the list.
Tried maybe 3 times but just nothing on here gripped me. I was looking forward to it as I like previous singles but this was a bit underwhelming.
Some of it was good background music for work, kind of chill and trance-y. But overall not really my favorite, not enough of a catchy tune
2 liked songs: - emotional haircut - i used to
Well-produced album, brought down by dated sounds and mediocre lyrics. If this had come out in 1997 or even 2007 I'd probably have a bit more of a favourable opinion, but given the very recent release date of 2017 I was expecting something a bit fresher. The lyrical content is overly cynical and sounds like a middle-aged man whining about how much kids these days suck. The songwriting is very good though, with tracks like tonite and how do you sleep? being able to keep me interested in the progression while the repetitive base elements don't change at all. The length is also an issue, by the time I got to the last few tracks I felt like not much new was being added by including more.
Some nice; most mediocre. // Favs: oh baby / american dream / black screen Score: Light 3
-"other voices" is reminding me of the Talking Heads, also has pretty cool guitar and stuff at the end -I liked the grooving on "change yr mind" -Cool Bass in "how do you sleep?"
A bit out of my usual listening material. Some quirky songs but I wouldnt call them bad. Didnt dislike anything but didn't feel much else for it either.
ok
the worst lcd soundsystem album
A mediocre album by a great band. Why is this album on the list? Are you assuming everyone has already heard their other albums? Then the reasoning would be "you've heard their other albums; so, go ahead and listen to this one". But, that's a big assumption. If you are reading this and are not familiar with LCD Soundsystem DO NOT listen to this album. Listen to their first one or "Sound of Silver".
Some noteworthy lyrics and good sounds, but also some cringe lyrics and boring musical passages
It was much better than expected. Not my usual style but the album is an easy listen.
Enjoyed this album.... reminded me of DRIVE soundtrack
Thought this was very decent.
Decent but not their best album
I remember Coralette loving this group, and hearing that they were super loud and good (like The Faint at that concert at Jannus that one time), but the other album didn't knock me out. Might need to listen louder.... First song -- I keep waiting/thinking there's gonna be a loud climax, but 2/3 of the way through it sounds like it'll just finish as a mid-tempo love song. Yup. It did. So, maybe LCDS is like Modest Mouse -- mostly mid-tempo, atmospheric stuff, with a few rockers or catchy songs thrown in. Solid 3 so far after 3/10 songs. Ended up the same.
There were songs I liked and songs I really didn’t like. I liked “how do you sleep” a lot. At first I thought it might be good background music but concluded it is not.
The album cover is cool except for the typeset hindering the view. Definitely liked Tonight and Oh Baby. Their path of famous to forgotten to famous is intriguing and worth listening to.
pretty cool, better nad better as it went on. a journy
Was alright
Not there best album but oh baby is a tune
Now this is how you do synth-pop proper! Not like that Chemical Bros crap I just listened to. How do you sleep, Tonite are standouts.
This was okay. I liked the last LCD album a little better, but this wasn't bad.
Got bored with this one...
Whoa, gotta be the newest we’ve had on this list! I’m not a big fan of LCD, but I actually saw them in concert with Andrew and Alden, that was really fun. I’ve heard this album before and only really liked one song (“oh baby”), but this time around I liked some more. This is a good album, but it doesn’t hold my interest all that much. Still, some solid hits to get you dancing. Favorite tracks: oh baby, other voices, how do you sleep? Album cover: So simple that it feels cheap. Getty images-level of effort here. I love looking at the sky as much as the next guy, but give me a break. 3.5/5
I liked this record. Never listened to it before.
I always appreciate James Murphy. Maybe this’ll be better on a second listen-thru. I still liked it.
Decent vibe album, lyrically lacking but I don't think that's necessarily a point against it.
Takes a sharp nosedive after the stellar track 1 but later on redeems itself.
Ok, few songs kind of enjoyed (emotional hair cut, oh baby), energetic background music. 6/10
nice electronica
Started out a little weak but got progressively stronger with each song. I like the synth-heavy rock style that they got going on.
Pretty clean production, good songwriting, like the atmosphere/feel of the album Reminds me of !!! and a little bit of talking heads Not super groundbreaking Kinda long, 7 tracks in and its starting its getting less interesting Got pretty boring by the end of it. Not sure because it was first listen, but either the album is front loaded or very samey throughout. 6/10
Retro new wave
Average overall. Annoying at times but ok
Was never my style but I appreciate how good this particular record is.
Not my cup of tea.
I can dig it
bruh this is happening jest takie lepsze
This feels very Remain In Light inspired. Long, drawn out grooves. Feel like it’s not quite as much a hodgepodge of sounds and soundplay as This Is Happening or Sound of Silver. I think it’s really cool background music. The vocals could be mixed a little higher imo. Some songs I think maaaybe overstay their welcome a little, I think some of the vocals are just a little TOO trying to be eccentric. I think it sounds really good but I’m not in love with it. I don’t think it’s BAD, but Idk I do think the magic isn’t quite here on this one
I enjoyed the album but this is not my favorite LCD album.
I've listened to a bunch of LCD before but never actually sat down with this album. I think it loses steam somewhere near the end; especially on the last two tracks, which are a combined 25 minutes. It's not bad, just maybe trimming the fat would have made this a great album. Favorite tracks: "how do you sleep?", "other voices", "tonite"
Listened before
If you’re gonna make a bunch of 10 min songs they need to be interesting and good. This was not that. Like over produced worse version of future islands.
very very meh. don't like the sound.
Et bien non
beliebiges synthie-geklimper.
1.9
the first song was okay but the rest of the album was a bit too repetitive
How did THIS make it? I love LCD Soundsystem’s earlier albums but this one is booty.
The less singing there were in the songs the better they were to me. The rhythms and synths going on were mostly really good but the slow talking/singing that I associate mostly with 80s synth isn't something I really like. A few songs were okay to good but overall not for me.
Why this album? Ample choices under the LCD Soundsystem discography. I guess that means I'll see him again later. *Sigh* this list is getting tiresome. 2.5/5
Well that's very disappointing!!
It’s a maybe for my the instrumentals sound nice but they don’t combine with the vocals or lyrics as much so a 5/10
Meh
Was expecting banger after b …not this album IMO
no reason for songs to be this long and go absolutely nowhere
It was initially a 3, but ughhh some of the tracks really drag on (I’m not a fan of 8+ minute songs, sorry)
i like all the stuff this is clearly inspired by. gang of four, new order, early human league, so on and so forth. this just misses the mark for me. it's not particularly interesting, i didn't mind how do you sleep but i found the rest pretty forgettable.
I do not care for this band but I begrudgingly occasionally have to hand it to them but also maybe I should give this a 2. Actually I'm giving this a 2 because I think it is "ehh" rather than "good."
meh
2nd album I've gotten from them. No matter how hard you try, you can't get me to care about these guys. Even less worth engaging with here than Sound of Silver.
Interesting…2.5. Kind of grates after awhile.
dreamy
I was originally excited when I saw LCD Soundsystem. I was then disappointed. Not sure why this warranted a place on the list. Sound of Silver deserves a place. The what happens next albums don't. This fat list needs trimming. 2/5.
Partially ok
Just like the American dream, this is overrated and, much like their other effort, miles too long.
I went to my first music festival about ten years ago. The group tenting next to us was usually rolling face or coked out of their minds, but they are fairly nice and we spent our mornings smoking and trying to make the comedown from the night before not hurt so bad. They were traveling all summer following this guy called LCD Soundsystem, they said one morning, dried blood hanging from their nostrils. At first I thought, these guys must be fucking nuts, but I wanted to give them the benefit of the doubt having never heard him myself. I didn’t want to doubt the wisdom of these elder millennials. They would rave of the many nights spent candy flipping, wooking out the majesty and wonder of this one man to whom they devoted their entire summer and perhaps 50% of the brain function. Who was I to doubt them. The festival ended, I never got around to seeing LCD, nor had I ever bothered to look up his music. But the thought always lingered in the back of my mind, what were these guys onto that I wasn’t? The thought faded over time and I always slightly regretted never looking him up. After all these years, having finally listened to this album, I can confirm, those guys were just a bunch of drug addict losers with awful taste in music.
You ever have that thing where you hear from everyone that a thing is good? Like universally its a thing that people just like. Candy, pizza, a fresh fallen snow. Well I dont really like any of that stuff and its the same with this album too. Like those 3 things I dont hate them but I really never seek them put. I feel exactly the same about this music. Its just too indie bs and syrupy. Idk I just dont like it much at all. I will give the song emotional haircut a nod cause that song has some get up and punch. Everything else is just spacy and boring. Its all vibes with no substance. At least thats how it made me feel. I was checking the track list constantly trying to see when it would end. And thats not a good sign. I 100% understand that this is someone, if not a majority of peoples, thing. I get it. I just dont share that view even a little. Its just not for me in every sense.
This dude wants to be David Byrne so bad. This is apparently their big comeback album. Probably should have kept this project on ice.
There are some good LCD songs but not in this watered down Duran Duran rip-off
Love call the police and obviously Bowie was a fan but still just okay for me
This isn’t at all anywhere close to the first album from them. So much so it might get docked an extra star. Not good. Boring and long.
It was decent
**An ok album
if i were a fan of this genre, perhaps i'd like the album more.
The best parts are derivative (Talking Heads, New Order), the worst sound like the music used for the "emotional" scene at the end of a bad tv drama. Ugly cover. 2.25 / 5
Only listened to a couple tracks
Nudne. 2
nostalgic, kinda futuristic but a mix of y2k. sounds funky, not my preference tho
Out of tune 2nd division Talking Heads.
Oh buddy, not a lot for me to like here. This album sounded like Nick Cave and Coldplay mashed together (this is NOT a compliment). Bad minimalist sad boi “rock” with a lot of electronica backing. One song was just OK and will save it from the Hall of Shame, but it’s still a low 2/5.
I always see their name come up and think “they’re supposed to be good” and then am underwhelmed. Worse talking heads kinda
The last few days I've gotten albums to listen to that I was excited about ahead of time. These were ones I'd heard of, but never listened to. I was happy to report that I really enjoyed all of them. When this came up today I was feeling the same level of excitement, as this is a band I thought I'd really get into. I've seen snippets of videos that have looked pretty cool, and maybe heard a song here or there that I also liked. As the album started I was getting into it. oh baby was a great start and I hoped it would keep me interested throughout. Unfortunately I started getting a bit irritated rather than interested. The songs weren't as catchy and the vibe was darker than I'd hoped for. I do love lots of post punk and electronica, but version wasn't doing it for me. And the length of the songs and album as a whole just made me wish it would end sooner. I knew my positive album streak was going to come to an end soon, but didn't think it would happen with this record. Oh well....there's always tomorrow.
#903. This one isn't it boys 2/5: meh
This one is not for me. Boring, uninspired, and insubstantial
Previous LCD Soundsystem albums sound like the party you wished would keep going. American Dream sounds like the music played to tell people that the party is over. Stand-alone, this is a decently made album, but it drags and meanders.
LCD Soundsystem – american dream (2017) On Day 101, I started the second century of this challenge with a project that fell short of its goals. While the electro-pop compositions are spacious and unafraid to push the tonal range, they ultimately feel musically mechanical and soulless. The "doodad wizardry" and droning chord progressions don't translate into a real connection for me. The whole LP feels like "wannabe karaoke songs" that a boss would play to try and act cool in the office. It’s technically capable in its production, but it lacks the "immaculate" soul or the energy needed to be memorable. It’s not a completely bad album, but it’s definitely a passable experience that doesn't warrant a revisit. A definitive 2/5.
Honestly got kind of bored of this by the end of my listen. Some cool songs and sounds throughout, but I definitely think some of LCD Soundsystem's earlier work is stronger and more interesting. Favorites: i used to, call the police
The best song was "call the police." The rest didn't grab me. "how do you sleep?" and "black screen" ended up pretty good, but took too long to build up to it, in my opinion.
It's an interesting sounding band but it's not my favorite style. It reminds me mostly of CHVRCHES but is a mish mash also with 80's inspired synth. It's not my favorite but I can get why others like it.
Did not enjoy listening to this. Just some weird uninteresting music imo.
Tedious. Why is it so long? I quite like the early stuff but this is inessential and overlong. Makes me doubt the quality and decision making of the list compiler. Worst one yet.
Plodding, synthey, Alt pop
the impression I powerfully received is a record full of songs 3 times longer than they need to be, desperately trying to build out "repetition and references" as a theme to conceal that there are only 2 or 3 original ideas hanging around
I don't know why I am always so surprised when indie rock albums use synthesizers and other modern electronic instruments. The album is okay, but definitely drags on a bit and becomes a little boring. I enjoyed their earlier album more. 2.5/5 Won't listen again
Lots of synth noises that all sounded the same to me.
Yes
