Reviews (page 5 of 8)

-1 star for using lowercase song titles. You're not 17.

I think this is a pretty decent album. But, why are the songs so long?

Weakest album by them, still really good. But yeah doesn’t reach that level.

LCD to me never has amazing albums, which is funny because they have some of my favourite songs of all time but I can never fully embrace every song on one of their albums and here is no exception. Pulse feels like a weird end to the album but who knows what I'll think on next listen. I'm sure there's more to like here. Anyway there's a couple bangers here so I'm gonna listen more to this but as a whole I'm not there. Highlight: how do you sleep?

Highlights - Other Voices, a bass driven track that has a persuasive drive and force to it, that keeps the song moving and allows for interesting musical motifs to be littered throughout. Call The Police, lyrically this is a really solid song, littered with melancholic guitars and synths, I enjoy the pacing. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Some good songs

Great vocals and songwriting … I’m too old some of the backing “music” sounds like noise 3 stars

I think I get it. Somewhat innovative but pretty out there. Cool sounds. Kinda sounds like Talking Heads. Love call the police

I like them so this was probably never going below a 3, but I think this is too long and not up to their usual standards. “I used to” and “American Dream” were favorites. A lot of the rest could have been cut.

Not as good as the other LCD album but still a solid listen. Bit long and some of the songs lingered a bit too long. 6/10

A bit too electronic for me

Experimental as always from LCD Soundsystem. Kinda weird, but in an endearing way. This album drags its feet though. Didn't need to be over an hour long.

The rare album where I was really into a number of the longer songs. That's not true for all of them, though (black screen was something of a dud as the closer). There are a handful of songs I'll hopefully return to often from this, even if the full album doesn't hit quite as hard as I thought it might have midway through the album.

Pas d’affaire dans la liste. This Is Happening est 1001 fois meilleur.

Back when my group got LCD Soundsystem's second album, I spent a fair chunk of my review comparing it to Grape Nuts. Yeah, I'd seen some review calling the album "techno music for grown-ups," and it inspired me to go off on this whole cereal-based metaphor. The short version was, if this was techno for grown-ups, gimme a box of Froot Loops. Froot Loops don't bore me. And it sort of bummed me out. I'm pretty well aware of their legacy, and, I'unno, I felt like I shoulda liked them more than I did. Which, to be clear, I don't **have** to. Just because a band has a legacy doesn't mean they deserve my love or whatever. But I'unno, from what I remember hearing about them, it seemed like I woulda been big on them... And I just wasn't. Before hopping into this album, though, I took another look at "New York, I Love You But You're Bringing Me Down", and I really liked it. Truthfully, it could have been because I was thinking about the mashup with Miles Davis freestyling over it, but still: it's pretty good. Maybe I've grown a bit since this past January; maybe I'm more open to liking LCD Soundsystem now. So here we go with 'american dream,' the band's big comeback album after they'd disbanded five years earlier. Good things never last, eh? But no, seriously, it's their fourth album... And only their fourth? I woulda sworn they'd be more albums deep by this point... But whatever. We're on the other end of this band's career from 'Sounds Of Silver'. As such, I must ask myself: how does it fare? Is this where I come to love LCD Soundsystem? Mmrgh... LCD Soundstem, I wanna love you, but you keep bringing me down. Like, look, it's not **all** bad. "Call The Police" reminded me a lot of U2 and David Bowie — and I'm maybe the only person who'll **compliment** the album for that! Plus, there's scattered moments where I can nod and be like, "Yeah, no, that's not bad at all." On the whole, though... Jeez. Y'wanna talk about Grape Nuts? "Techno for grown-ups?" This has a bit of that stink of "You listen to this to feel smart and like you have good taste," except with a bit of sarcasm that helps take the edge off things. The whole thing largely feels like it's moving at the same mid-tempo pace the entire time. Even when they toss in some different styles, it doesn't really spice things up too much. It's just a whole lot of, "OK... Is that it?" I mean, if I was looking to this album to give me a good reason to love LCD Soundsystem, this just isn't it. I gotta wonder if it was propelled onto this list just because it was LCD Soundsystem's big comeback record. An otherwise fine record gassed up and boosted on "They're back! And they're doin' all the sounds and stylings we love to hear!" Kind of like the suspicions I had about David Bowie's 'The Next Day.' Like, I'm trying to figure out how exactly I'd've wanted this to sound if I'm not such a big fan of how it is now. Well, I suppose for one it would've been shorter overall. Especially that closer — it did **not** need to be twelve minutes, my goodness. But about the sound... Maybe if it'd been dancier? Like, don't tease me by going halfway. I mean, it's **so close**, but it just refuses to make that final push in tempo, and that really, more than anything, is what makes this really feel like "Music to listen to if you wanna feel like you have good taste." Is LCD Soundsystem even a dance band? I always kind of assumed they were based on that one song they did about Daft Punk, but the more I listen to them the less I can imagine actually dancing to any of this. Is this kinda stuff banging on the dance floor? Unless I see it for myself, I wouldn't think so. So... Yeah. Another LCD Soundsystem album, another one leaving me pretty underwhelmed. Like I said, if I was using this album to convince me to like this band... This just ain't it. Though what's funny is that in the middle of writing this review, I went back and listened to a couple of songs from their first two albums to compare — and wouldn't you know it, I actually liked them a lot. Like, goodness, they actually had a bit of actually dance-y energy back then. Placed next to what they were doing on 'american dream'... I mean, I'unno if I'd say if I'd ever listen to one of their albums in full again, but at least on a song by song basis, yeah. Maybe I do like LCD Soundsystem after all. And this album had very little to do with that. Go figure. I suppose the real American dream would've been if this album had been. But I guess the dream is over.

This was an OK album. I would listen to it again.

I quite like the sound of this album 'for and electonic/ dance oriented album' which is not my style generally. A few nice hooks and some songs remind of Talking Heads. Not unpleasant but quite featureless and it leave me stone cold, it just 'exists'.

6 /10…indietronica / dance punk

Meditative. It's good, and the trademark sound is still there, though for me doesn't hold up against the energy of their first couple of albums.

I just don’t think this caught me at the right time. The songs are too many songs in one and I only want to listen to like one song from each. Probably deserves a relisten when I’m more in the mood

nothing outstanding, very bearable

I generally enjoy LCD Soundsystem but I don't understand why this album was included in the list. I don't think they're good enough to include 2 albums so one of their other albums would have been better to include.

not as good as sound of silver and this is happening but i enjoyed some qualities of this record, had a more rock sound to it but i found it lacked some qualities that made his previous works more special, songs dragged more

Good! Found out a song on one of my fave tv shows is on this album ha

Interesting

This is a hard album to rate, because there were songs I really liked, and others I hated. The best ones had a strong beat that made me want to move, but interspersed with these were songs that were discordant and noisy. In the end, I can only rate based on how much I enjoyed listening to the album as a whole, and on that basis I'm going straight down the middle

My least favorite LCD album? I’m a fan. Each before this had at least one song that grabbed me that I still listen to. Maybe I got bored of them? Or thought the magic was gone after they “retired” and then suddenly came back.

Pretty good, but also missed the mark for me. I would say that my favorite song was the last that was instrumental. I would listen again, if someone convinced me. Otherwise, shelved.

This album was very hit or miss for me. I was into the opening song (oh baby), but then was getting bored until I got to "how do you sleep?". That kicked off a nice 3-song stretch that was capped off by a song I've heard somewhere before, call the police. That is a great song and by far my favorite. The rest afterwards was pretty bland except emotional haircut, which just felt like a terrible song. I think this lands somewhere in the 3 spectrum, probably on the higher end if this was a little shorter.

I danced my house clean to this

I don't think I've ever heard this one and it was better than I expected.

Solid album. For 2017, nothing transcendental for me.

I love Sound is Silver and This Is Happening but not really this one. It just sounds like a more mediocre version of those. It doesn’t branch off in a different way to those so honestly scratching my head why this is necessary. It did grow on me a bit this time compared to whenever I first heard it at least. Still one of my least favorite album covers ever. Rating: 2.6

interesting inclusion of a comeback record.

Chill vibe, decent background music. Would probably not listen to more by LCD Soundsystem but I do not dislike the album

Känner nog samma som sist, det är bitvis rätt bra. Men lyfter inte helt för mig. Tycker nog oh baby, fösta låten är bäst

About halfway through this album, I started thinking it sounded like I was listening to someone who was losing his edge - who was sliding from "musical genius" to "running out of ideas." Then track 4 hits us with this lyric... I've just got nothing left to say I'm in no place to get it right And I'm not dangerous now The way I used to be once I'm just too old for it now At least that seems to be true Well, it was a good run while it lasted.

Tykkään bändistä ja kuunneltu päivän mittaan muttavtämä ei ole sitä..

It was alright a 2.75

decent

American Dream finds LCD Soundsystem returning without reinventing themselves. Instead, they refine their established style - sarcastic, self-aware lyrics, hypnotic grooves, and a heavier focus on synth textures that give the album a colder sheen. When it works, it works well: “how do you sleep?” builds slowly into a tense, driving peak, as does the opener “oh baby”, while the title track “american dream” blends melancholy synth layers with one of Murphy’s most affecting vocal performances. There’s also a strong Talking Heads influence here. “change yr mind” sounds like a Remain in Light B-side, complete with Adrian Belew-like noisy, eclectic guitar lines. But too often, the payoff isn’t worth the wait, with some songs unraveling so slowly that they lose their grip. Several tracks run past seven minutes without evolving enough to justify their length, circling around ideas that eventually lose momentum. Murphy’s lyrics dwell on aging and nostalgia, still sharp at times but occasionally too on the nose, as with “tonite,” which lacks the layered subtlety of his best writing. It’s a solid album with flashes of brilliance, but also one that feels overlong and under-edited. The synth work is richer, and the themes are relatable, but pacing issues and an uneven tracklist keep it from reaching the heights of Sound of Silver or This Is Happening. All in all, american dream is still an enjoyable listen. It may not rank among LCD Soundsystem’s best work, but there’s enough here to reward repeat plays, with moments that reveal more on subsequent listens. Even if it doesn’t fully justify its length, the album offers a mix of sharp writing, rich synth textures, and occasional emotional weight that makes it worth revisiting. 3.5/5

Favorite Track: oh baby

Interesting. Not what I expected. Eclectic and keyboard driven. Bowie influences and good melodies. Like it.

Easily the most recent album I’ve received on this list thus far, so I didn’t expect much. (Sadly, I’ve grown weary of modern music. Guess I’m old.) That said, it was surprisingly good. Not necessarily something I’ll listen to again, but I would t mind if it’s on.

Better than any LCD I had heard before almost a 4 from me… kind of shocked because I really hate their other albums. I still think they lack a melodic quality that makes them feel aloof.

i’m a huge LCD Soundsystem fan, like huge. but this is definitely their weakest album by a mile. that being said i still like it but it doesn’t even come remotely close to their last album (which is their best album and genuinely the best album of the 2010s)

so this is good but it went on forever (writing this not including the japanese bonus track) and doesn't feel quite as focussed and vital as the earlier work. Light 3.5*

Oh Baby How Do You Sleep? Tonite Call the Police American Dream

This was way too long, some really great bits in it but needed 30 minutes cut

It's ok but it's deffo not as good as this is happening which for some reason isn't on this list. All the tracks are decent but no real standouts.

I was a little confused when this one came up. Based on it's presence I fully expect S/T and This is Happening to pop up. Otherwise, the world makes no sense. This is a decent album, though comparatively it feels like a phoned in regurgitation of ideas that were better executed on literally every album that came before. Earns stars for gnarly synth bass stabs. Even more stars for Oh Baby, which sounds like the theme from Reading Rainbow.

I thought I was going to hate this album but I was pleasantly surprised. There were elements of New Order, Talking Heads and other bands in this and it was a pleasant surprise. It drags a bit though. Is my life forever changed by listening to this? No. Did I hate it? Nah

I love LCD Soundsystem and this is a solid example of their work. Really my favorite of their albums is This is Happening, but it doesn't seem to be among the 1001.

This was pretty good! Not amazing but moderately enjoyable.

= The Beatles Kinda post modern Talking Heads

What I would call electro-pop, not bad though. Reasonably average so a 3

17/06/2025 I didn't realise that I knew their most famous song. It's an okay album, I'm glad I listened, but I don't think I will listen again.

listened in caribou while doing anki cards like the vibes a lot maybe a 6/10?

Perfectly fine background music for an hour

Would give a 3.5 if I could. Not a bad album, but doesn’t quite have the heft of previous LCD Soundsystem.

Yeah most of this is just ass. Many other artists wouldve deserved this spot. I liked the opening track and thats about it. I think since they established a style back then, other artists have perfected it and elevated it while they’re not just stuck in their past, but also made it spmehow worse. I think it’s mostly just boring and only sometimes annoying tho, so i can’t give it a bad 2. It’s a veery low 3 for me

The production is cool, but some of the songs can get a little repetitive and long.

++: Other Voices, How Do You Sleep?, Tonite, Emotional Haircut +: Oh Baby, I Used To, Change Yr Mind, Call the Police, Black Screen +-: American Dream 7,3/10

Decent, not as good as their previous albums.

Sounds a bit pretentious. Reminiscent of Talking Heads and Bono. A bit underwhelming. 3.2

Decent new-wave. But not really my jam. Too discordent and not enough upbeat. 3/5

I didn't dislike it. Much better than I was dreading. I sometimes struggle with New York bands, not always. Too much self conscious 'cool'. But this was absolutely fine. Quite good in parts

Putting a well liked bands worst album?

I wasn't crazy about it, but I didn't really get the hate here either. If you want to be upset about long meandering songs there are far worse albums on the list.

Bell'album un po' techno.

Not as good as I remember in my australian dreams

Jag gillade "how do you sleep" och "american dream" men i övrigt var jag oväntat otaggad på detta. Det känns som något jag borde gilla men idk. Kanske bara är på dåligt humör. Den får en trea iaf för säkerhets skull.

Pretty boring. I really enjoy early LCD Soundsystem (I got Sound of Silver earlier and that was a very easy 5) but this wasn't it. I don't think this belonged on the list and there could've been room made for something more contemporary.

Helt okej.

Interesting mashup of Gang of Four/Talking Heads/80's New Wave synth references with a bit of disco. I found "Emotional Haircut" and "Black Screens" to be especially entertaining, but some folks at my party thought it was a bit of a drony downer. Maybe too intellectual, and seems kind of self-pitying? Everyone gets older... I dunno, maybe a little self-centered and relies on a relationship with the listener, or some prior knowledge of James Murphy himself to create emotional connection to his material.

This lot passed me by to the extent that I had no idea what kind of music to expect. There's enough here to warrant another listen, but a post break-up, comeback album is probably not the best place to start. Elements of Talking Heads and New Order in places, which is no bad thing.

Synthy electro. First track reminds me of OMD but with that modern closeup breathy vocals. Kraftwerk a clear influence. Very 80s in sound and feel. Ooh I like the end of I Used To, with the guitar! Some indie elements too, like Change Yr Mind Some of the synth lines are so good (back half of How Do You Sleep), but they're too sparsely placed for my taste. Vocals are reminiscent of The Cure Best track: I Used To or How Do You Sleep or Oh Baby

pretty interesting i think its a pretty high 3/5

I was really excited to listen to this because I love Sound of Silver. However, this album was a miss for me. The songs objectively sound good, but they just droned on and on. It had me missing the lyricism and storytelling of songs on Sound of Silver which was pretty much entirely lacking here

01) Oh Baby - 7,5 02) Other Voices - 7,0 03) I Used To - 7,5 04) Change Yr Mind - 6,5 05) How Do You Sleep? - 6,0 06) Tonite - 7,5 07) Call the Police - 7,5 08) American Dream - 7,5 09) Emotional Haircut - 6,5 10) Black Screen - 7,0 TOTAL: 7,05 (71/100) Current ranking:

Probably the worse lcd album they made and I’m a fan of lcd! This list is real sus.

Dude whatever idk I didn't care

Much like yesterday's Hot Chip selection, I own a few of LCD Soundsystem's earlier albums, so it's nice to get a band I like and music I haven't previously heard by them. And unlike Hot Chip's "In Our Heads", I enjoyed this album just as much as I've enjoyed their earlier albums. I particularly enjoyed "oh baby" (in part due to the impressive and sad video by Rian Johnson and starring Sissy Spacek and David Strathairn), "i used to", and "call the police". A solid album, and fun to get newer material from them in this collection, but not their strongest work; perhaps they felt a bit rusty (and clearly more subdued) from their long hiatus before this album was released.

Kind of nice although I kinda couldn't listen in one go with interrupts at work Will I listen to again: 33%

Неожиданно фоном играло хорошо, в конце только нудновато. 6 из 10.

I had another of their albums before (Sound of Silver). They are like a 00's indie rock/electronica band. They sound like a modern day Talking Heads Favorite songs: Call the Police, How Do You Sleep?, Tonite, Other Voices, Oh Baby Least favorite songs: Black Screen, Change Yr Mind 3/5

Not always a fan of the indie dance punk genre but I didn’t hate this. You can hear the influences of the 80s post punk bands and even U2 on this. Album cover is terrible though

Sometimes maybe good, sometimes maybe shit

not their best work - but solid

pretty fun. jammy, upbeat. a solid listen, even if i feel dead inside. 3 stars

A nice listen, has a summer-like vibe to it and comparatively similar to M83’s style of music. Would listen to again properly (listened on a commute and I forget I’m listening). 7.4/10.

A little bland, but listenable. "call the police" was decent, but that's as good as it gets. Not enticed to listen to more.

James Murphy is in that class of genius who I never want to meet.

It's fun to see what the individual songs remind me of, Joy Division, Talking Heads, Bowie in the Berlin era, Tusk. At least all the songs are different. The Cure, Gang of Four..... 3*

sonically i quite enjoyed this a lot. american dream, the title track was really lush sounding. but lyrically not much of an album for me.

Ganz nette Sachen dabei, zieht sich manchmal etwas find ich

It was okay, im not a big fan of his previous work and i thought most of this to be decent but nothing crazy, the ocassional track that does grab you, however.

Other electronica I’ve heard were structured more as atmospheric house music that grows by layering, whereas this album was more polished tracks with vocals, and I enjoyed this more. Maybe this makes it fit less in electronic music box than something else? 3.25/5

Sounds a lot like a modern day Talking Heads to me. I've grown to like Dance-Punk quite a bit more since starting this journey. This album has some nice loud Drums and Synths throughout that really bring the energy. The album itself is a bit on the long side and some of the songs were quite long winded overall, but nonetheless a pretty enjoyable listen.

A bit too electronica for my personal tastes, but good for what it is. 3.3

Good, not a favorite.

While I did enjoy this album, I find this the weaker album LCD Soundsystem has released.

I like the song titles

Simply alright.

FAVO: Oh baby, other voices, how do you sleep?, tonite, call the police

Supreme white boy, but at least some variety

drei bis vier. American dream

This was my introduction to lcd and I was not disappointed

I want to check out Four Horsemen next time I'm in NYC

The first track is wonderful. The second track is obnoxious. That about sums up LCD Soundsystem. Most of the album follows suit, alternating between delightful and annoying. Sometimes it depends on my mood. But generally not a fan of “other voices,” “change yr mind,” or “tonite,” but I dug “call the police” through the end of the album.

The sound ranges from neo-80s to alternative rock. I’d rather they stick to the broody synth sounds.

Not bad. But the parts I liked most were things I’ve already heard from the Talking Heads and contemporaries the Killers and AWOLNATION. I wouldn’t change the station if this came on again, but probably won’t seek it out either.

I don't have a lot to say. This is enjoyable chill background music.

It seems like good dance music.

I think this list isn't showing the best 1001 albums tbh as then I'd hope for only 1-2 albums per huge artist and nothing from ones that are okay. I don't want to sound mean because I did enjoy some songs on this but I wouldn't consider it something people need to hear... This gives very much soundtrack vibes which is nice but not ground breaking as it just drags for someone listening for the first time. Also why do I never get women artists on this? Maybe I'm unlucky.

The Good: The American Dream! The Bad: misreading the bands name and thinking that we will be trippin’ a little… The Ugly: the fact that LCD is old tec by now… When the album showed up my initial reaction was “I’ve already listened to this…” because i recalled the band’s name… I even had to go back and read my comments about the other album I listened to, to read that I had actually enjoyed the experience… And I again enjoyed the experience, however, there are a couple of comments I’d like to make: While the first time I was exposed to LCD Soundsystem I was pleasantly surprised, this time around I had a higher level of expectations, and though I found several of the tracks enjoyable, having to sit through 60+ minutes was a little taxing for me. It also dawned on me why I did like LCD Soundsystem the first time I listened to them, and that’s because they are, to a certain extent, a modern version of the Talking Heads… but only to a certain extent. Having said all this, I don’t understand why this band has 2 albums (I hope only 2) on the 1001 list… 3*

I liked this one more than I thought I would. I wouldn't say it's my jam, but for an 88-minute techno (to my ears) album, it was not half bad.

Re-listen and feel slightly more positive than years ago but still missing some juice

I went into this album with some preconceptions. I dated a girl in college that was very much into the early 2000s indie scene and we frequented house parties where it seemed like LCD soundsystem made up the bulk of the Playlist. Never liked them or hated them back then. This album was a pleasant surprise compared to what I'd heard.

Always found to be a bit overrated (I think I bought a previous album to try and be cool), but enjoyed the 80s synths of track one so felt optimistic. Then some tracks were boring and some were funky basically

This is the kind of music that I kind of like but for the most part if I never heard it again it wouldn't phase me. 6.8 ★★★

Competently made, but a lot of this does little for me, but the three best tracks, "How Do You Sleep?", "Call the Police" and "Black Screen" are really cool. This was heading for a 3, but those three tracks lifted it to a light 3.5 stars

Dancy, electronic, post-punk-esque. Quite enjoyable.

Started eh, but really liked the back half.

Some songs are really catchy, others no so much. Also, a bit too long of an album but I do appreciate the sound of it overall

Ok so this was released 2017, it is electronic and indy sounding. It sounds like its from the 90's kinda. I feel like this artist was influential in the scene but unsure about this album in specific

I largely ignored this one at the time. A bit strange, because I was a big fan of the breakout singles a decade or so earlier. Listening to it now I think I was right to pay not too much attention to it. Maybe you get more out of it if you listen to the words but it doesn't half go on a bit, does it? The production is nice. Bit Human League. Bit Bowie. But my god, those songs are long.

Some strong tracks (oh baby, call the police, american dream) but some overly long bland stuff as well. Would definitely be a 7/10 but limited to 3 or 4 so went for the 3 option

Surprised this was imcluded, think they have a big drop off after 1st 2 albums. I did attend a listening Party for this though, back in the day. A couple of bangers, but overall a little too mid, too plodding..

I dislike something about it but I don't know what it is. It makes me feel like I'm not real.

The worst album of one of my favourite bands of all time. Hey, at least it works as an excuse to return to it since I haven't done that in a while.

M,eh, some tracks ok but a bit boring

I really can't tell if it's a 2 or a 3. The songs themselves are pretty good but sometimes the lyrics are just bad and singing is mediocre throughout. I'm going to settle on a 3 as it's something I could go back and listen to but I wouldn't go out of my way to.

A pretty good comeback album from a great band that unfortunately just doesn’t get close to the dizzying groove-packed heights of their earlier records. There’s no Daft Punk Is Playing At My House, All My Friends, or Dance Yrself Clean on here but it’s still a pretty fun ride. It’s also overshadowed by the more energetic Electric Lady Sessions which has live versions of predominantly the same songs

like a bad U2

I love LCD Soundsystem. They’d probably make my top ten, certainly top twenty, bands of this century list if I had to make one. Sound of Silver in particular is a masterpiece, but their first three albums are all absolutely fantastic. american dream is their fourth album, and I think it’s a pretty decent record. It’s definitely my least favorite of their four proper LPs, but it’s still pretty good. I don’t think I’ve come across any of their other albums on this list, but hopefully at least Sound of Silver is included. american dream is a fine sounding record and taken on its own it’s very good. oh baby is a great opener, and probably my favorite song on the album. call the police is another highlight, as is the title track. I think one issue with the album is that it’s 20-30 minutes too long. There’s probably a masterpiece within, but it’s really easy to get fatigued listening to it all at once. It’s still filled with great beats and some of the best idiosyncratic vocals this side of Talking Heads, but there’s so much of it and the high points are farther apart than needed to keep the listeners attention. Still a very solid, good record that I’m torn between 3 and 4 stars on.

3 eh uh huh ok

I got into LCD Soundsystem after their breakup. I fell in love with their unique fusion of dance music and indie rock, especially on Sound of Silver and This Is Happening. When they announced a reunion and, subsequently, a new record, I was estatic . My first listen of American Dream in college was a massive disappointment. I was heartbroken to find that James Murphy and company had lost their special spark after their final concert at Madison Square Garden. It was a more annoying retread of This Is Happening without any of that record’s emotional potency. After stewing with my negative feelings towards this album for years, I finally listen to it again for this project, and am sad to report that it’s a bit better than I remember. It’s not the disastrous dumpster fire that I had built it up to be in my head, but it still pales in comparison to the best of the group’s music from the decade before its release. With another LCD Soundsystem record finally on the way as I write this, I’m glad to have found some closure with American Dream. It remains skippable to me, but I don’t think it’s as legacy destroying as I once thought.

A little U2ish

Fun low key album

oh baby is the hit to lead off the album. The music matches the album cover. I could do without the sci fi lab noises in other voices. I do like this album. change yr mind is not good. It sounds like those human body songs on Kids Learning Tube on YouTube. how do you sleep? is like bad electronic U2. Their other albums are better. black screen sounds like the soundtrack to Blade Runner, or maybe Blade Runner: 2049. The ee cummings titles is a stupid affectation.

Easy listening. Was enjoyable to work to.

-was a little unremarkable at times but had a few hard hitters. The genre and music style is really interesting, kind of post-punk but also synth pop? Definitely a solid 3.5 -Also as an album from 2017 I think this is the latest one I’ve gotten on here so far -Favorites are how do you sleep?, tonite, and emotional haircut

It had a good vibe but not really a fan

Because of the nature of this list I don’t get to spend a lot of time with an album. I need to return to this because I liked a lot of it. But I do think it’s a tad too long. They being said I also have never listened to any other LCD Soundsystem album so maybe I just don’t have context. 3.5/5

I know very little about LCD Soundsystem so I was looking forward to this. The album has an 80's-like feel. The songs are all fine, but nothing really hooked me. Looks like some of their other albums had more catchy songs (e.g. "Daft Punk is Playing at My House").

Pretty good

Interesting sound. Not very great, though.

A couple really good songs with some other boring ones. The last song is cheeks.

I liked it better than the sound of silver, maybe just cause it feels like a middle aged manifesto, and I'm uncomfortably close to fitting that demographic. Still, fun, but not as earthshattering as some folks try to act like this cat is.

not bad but not for me

i liked this one; it had some funky vibes

mid. Thought that this would be more groundbreaking and interesting because of good things I've heard about LCD Soundsytem. Guess it's not for me.

Massive fan of their first few albums. Haven’t listened to anything since then. Bands which are so uniquely raw just never seem to age well. They always seem to get slightly over produced and slip into this trap where they are determined to make some sort of anthemic masterpiece that just lacks all the raw energy that they once had and is also far too long! Sadly this album feels a bit like that. There are definitely glimpses of old LCD in it but it just feels like it’s trying a bit too hard and doesn’t live up to their early brilliance! Theres even a track that sounds so much like modern day U2 that it almost made me vomit. Anyway, that’s U2s fault, not LCD. Really glad I listened to it but not sure I’ll be heading back too soon. 3.1

LCD Soundsystem are a band I keep meaning to check out. I found this album interesting and original. Think it will take a few more listens for me to really appreciate. 3/5

A few tracks in I feared this one could be extremely annoying and meandering, but the vibe got really cool after a while. Not bad!

This is a weird one for me. I don't hate it at all. But, having been into indie music at the time lcd was treated as God makes me want to give it a lower score than is fair. I just always found the level of hype unwarranted. I'm going I just say I think it's solid enough and give a 3.

Not a bad album, but it kinda drags a bit. Cant quite get to 4 stars. 3/5

this is not quite as happening

These guys are very hit and miss for me overall.

Traditional instruments, electronic instruments, living together. Mass hysteria.

Not my favorite LCD Soundsystem, but I still like it

If the Talking Heads or Bowie made am LCD Soundsystem album it might sound like this - this was intentional apparently, at least the Bowie influence. I do like some of the songs, I Used To on the first half and Call the Police and the title track on the second half. There's lots of good bass and the production is slick. I'm left wanting more though. This feels derivative and a bit empty.

I expected to hate this. But it wasn't bad. It dragged here and there and was too long at the end but I kind of looked this one.

It sounds like the dude from the strokes woke up and decided to play with GarageBand on his iPad. I don't love it. I will say it's unique-ish, so that's something. I'd give it a 2.5 if I could. I'm going to give it a 3 because even though I don't *like* it, per se, I don't think it's *bad*, it's just not for me.

Can’t believe I tried to hate this man

I'm not really an electronic music guy. I'm usually too busy listening to non-electronic music. But I get it, it's cool. Synth bass can be very satisfying.

Not the best I’ve heard from LCD Soundsystem, it was ok.

It's not my favourite sound but I can see what they are doing. Pretty long and repetitive but I imagine that's the point. 3/3.5 for consistency even though it's not fully for me. Would like to revisit it sometime

This is just diet Talking Heads, which is fine, I adore David Byrne and I’ve heard worse rip-offs, but I don’t see what makes this essential. C

The worst lcd soundsystem album but since the first three are classics that is not meant to be a diss. There are some great songs like tonite and how do you sleep and oh baby. It was annoying since they made a big deal about disbanding after three great records and then came out with this which was fine but after years going on and after seeing them live I ended up liking this one.

I’m left slightly amused and very confused

Oh Baby and American Dream are great tracks but the rest of the album is just ok. They have better albums and I don't know why this was included on the list. 3.5/5

Less internally repetitive than Sound of Silver, and groovier - but not by much. And based on some of the reviews, I suspect a great amount of the "creativity" here is blatantly copy-pasted from other original artists. The genre itself - seemingly combining retro-EDM with elements of post-punk and hard rock - is fairly good. I'm just glad they didn't commit to the whole "repeating 1-2 bars of theme with very gradual and minute variation spread across seven minutes" again. Some of the tracks, including the heavily rocking "tonite" and foot-tapper opening trio "oh baby" "other voices", and "i used to", are really strong. In most cases, these have a hook that's just catchy enough for me to not grow tired of it. I also have to hand it to LCD Soundsystem: the tracks I just mentioned, along with the title track and a few others, have some fantastic thick textures, what you might calls "highs". Often there aren't any "lows" to create contrast and emotion, but then this is meant to be an idle atmospheric album, isn't it? My main issue is that a few of the songs are just not interesting or memorable, and this effect is exacerbated by the long track lengths. The song "how do you sleep?" tries to take a prog rock approach but it's not convincing at all. There's no rise and fall of energy, just a few disparate song sections. The '10s decade has better to offer. But this is still solid. I like to think Sound of Silver primed me for LCD Soundsystem's style, and that I'd also give it a 3/5 if I came back to it. 3/5 Key tracks: oh baby, other voices, i used to, tonite

Enjoyed this one. Good music to listen to when working. Has a bit of an Arcade Fire feel with Trent Reznor/Atticus Ross mixed in.

It was alright… nothing special. I didn’t really like the guy’s voice to be fair.

It's not that the album is too long (I mean, it is.) It's that there's so many tones and moods in the album I can't tell what the album is supposed to be. Is this supposed to be an electronica band? Is it an EDM band? Is it a rock band? It's all over the place. You listen to a song like "black screen," and it starts off as one type of song and suddenly it's something else. And a lot of times, I am fine with that. But there's something to be said about transition. It's also fine to vary what kind of songs you have. When "oh baby" came on, I figured it was going to a band that plays this kind of music. But then you hear a song like "emotional haircut," and the predispositions you had from the beginning were all shot to hell. The beginning songs were very noodle-y, and then you realize that although there was some noodling, there is a band and not just one person. And they're all jamming together as opposed to one guy in his basement putting this stuff together. I mean, I _GUESS_ that's better? The band could argue as to what's better, what could be cut? (I have to wonder what they thought was too rambling?) So yeah, I guess I just feel like the band could be more concise and precise as to the sound they're going for. Top tracks: "emotional haircut," "how do you sleep?"

с 5 трека становится лучше, даже прикольно

5.5/10

Really good, kind of experimental music. I have heard this album before, it's interesting. I'm not sure that I could listen to this one in a group setting if that makes any sense. It's something I would listen to on my own and sort of contemplate it.

Pretty decent I’d give it a 3.5. Not something I’d listen to everyday but it wasn’t miserable

this album is aptly named as listening to it felt like a bad dream. i actually liked the majority of this album but it suffers a good bit due to the length. there were some cool musical ideas presented but most of the songs meandered far too long and there was one or two weaker songs that should've been cut completely. ultimately this causes what otherwise wouldve been a nice listening experience to feel like a slog

Intressant sound. Kanske kommer tillbaks tills honom någon gång.

Nice techno, like dark syrup enveloping me. Heard his other albums are good too but this one was nice. 3.3

What is it with electronic artists thinking their songs can be 6+ minutes long of repetitive sounds and everyone is going to love it? That being said, the songs on this album weren't too bad, but some did drag on. I'd say I generally could vibe with what was going on, but don't think I could classify this better than good background music.

Good if not a little sterile.

I think I’d need to listen to this a few more times to really rate it fairly. I enjoyed it, but not to the level of prior albums. Still good, though.

If you could give half stars this would be more of a 2.5, a bit hit and miss

Dancy. Some fun tracks, but not as good as his earlier albums.

3.5 really

Some good, some bad. Overally fairly middle of the road

Wasn't a huge fan of this one but it wasn't bad.

really liked sound of silver by him, but this is just to long and just not as good as sound of silver.

Good album, kind of a mix of 80s electronic with EDM/trance tracks as well, the latter of which could get repetitive and kinda boring.

I prefer Sound of Silver. It wasn’t a bad listen.

Two top tunes, the rest are okay.

I only really liked 1 song from this album

This album is super inconsistent, loved some songs and others were just weird and off putting.

I like this better than their other record on the list. Usually I don't like songs this long, but in this case it doesn't really bother me. Only the last song is too long. Favorite song: Emotional haircut.

It was ok but I didn’t really “get it”

Not the best one but a good one. He has a weird compelling sound it balances between good/awful exiting/dull. I guess it's this tension that keeps you listening.

There are many parts I like about this album, but I think I like the idea of listening to LCD Soundsystem more than I actually do enjoy listening to them. Maybe I'm never in the right mood for them? Why I intend on persisting it's a "me" problem, I dunno!

I like a lot of LCD Soundsystem but this was a LOT of LCD Soundsystem. Maybe a little too much. Feels like if there was a great party, and then somewhere during this album the party ended but the DJ was still feeling himself and so just kept going? I don't dislike any of it, but I was done with it.

LCD Soundsystem is the offspring of The Talking Heads. The song "other voices" has the same vibe as "Once in a Lifetime"

6.5/10

Not bad, one song I can genuinely say I liked (how do you sleep?), but it just overall didn't do it for me.

Started great, loved the first song. Then... things got boring.

I liked a lot of the songs , not all the beats, but over all strong album

Eletro dance rock, this sounds like a blend of Duran Duran, Pet Shop Boys and U2. I know a lot of people are really passionate about this band. I enjoyed this album in general, but for some reason they don't click with me. Rating: 3.5/5 Playlist track: oh baby Date listened: 03/04/24

Hm easy listening but also felt like hollow pop music idk not notable

They wish they were in the 80s. Not bad, though.

A decent listen. Drags a bit at parts, but also has some really nice parts. Not an album for regular rotation but it'll do every now & then.

I like LCD Soundsystem but I don't love this album. I found their previous efforts to be a lot more dance-y and while there are some solid ones on this album (Call The Police) there's too much slow stuff for me. I prefer Sound of Silver or This is Happening.

Sembrano un po' gli U2, si fa ascoltare

Liked it more than I expected to? "Oh Baby" a surprisingly pleasant opener, and "Black Screen" a surprisingly genuine lament. In between, I mostly forget.

Bara fínt ... margt gott

a decent revival from lcd soundsystem, american dream had a more art rock/synth-pop feel. littered with themes of depression, societal issues, fear and endings of friendship and love felt more subdued than other lcd soundsystem outings. best: call the police worst: black screen 3.5 stars

Same experience I always have with LCD Soundsystem - I look forward to listening and a like what I hear but I’m not rapt. It is amazing in places and I get it. I get the hype too. But I’m always having to remind myself to pay attention. 10/10 for vibes, inventiveness and making something clever that you can dance to too. Not 10/10 for enjoyment though.

I like this band a lot, but like a lot of electronic dance music it gets a bit repetitive. Say what you need to say in 3 minutes and move on.

After a long hiatus and reforming, the album was pretty good.

First time hearing this, I kind of lost interest after their initial hiatus. Found the elder statesman archness quite trying at the start and it felt like a weaker retread of earlier work, but gets much better as it progresses

When this album originally debuted, I wanted it to be as good as Sound of Silver, and the self titled album. But it wasn’t, and it’s still a dud.

Fine. A lot of words very little rhyming. Not for me

Was ok

Inoffensive but largely bland, fine driving music but can't remember sod all about it now I'm several hours removed from it

This record is giving me "Talking Heads" vibes, and that ain't bad. I suspect that if I cared more about lyrics, it would be even cooler. But that's OK. A few tracks in ... I'm digging it. By the end of the record, I'm still digging it. I could return to this as background music or if I'm in the right mood. 3.5 stars but I don't love it enough to round up to four.

Sounds like the talking heads

Perfectly acceptable background music. Probably won't listen again

I didn't mind it. Good in the background

Like an edgier, less commercial Talking Heads; this album = heavy synth ode to the 90s Added: I Used To

Mäßiger Synth Pop.

It's like a journey into a space type fantasy world. Worth a listen but won't revisit it much.

I'm in the middle of my LCD Soundsystem obsession as we speak, and while I'd heard American Dream is a long shot from Sound of Silver and This Is Happening, I was still hopeful American Dream wouldn't disappoint too much, and I was kinda right. There were some very enjoyable cuts, though I definitely see why many were left disappointed: it's not bursting at the seams with exciting new ideas like it's predecessors, and it meanders more than even the self titled. emotional haircut and change yr mind were two personal highlights, though I'm sure further listens will shine more light on the best parts of the LP.

It's pretty sad when I'm only one or two songs into an album and I already know I don't like it. It's even worse when said album is over an hour long, with a few tracks that run for 9 minutes or 12 minutes. I guess it gets points for bearing a few similarities to Talking Heads, Joy Division, and other bands of the genre, but it just sounds like a supbar version that goes on for too long. There /are/ moments where it develops a sound of its own - particularly with the title track which is the clear standout here. For the most part though, it's like LCD Soundsystem tried to modernize their inspirations but instead created a soundalike that just was not as good.

Wikipedia wants us to believe that this is Rock music. It isn't. This is dance/electro pop. Which wouldn't be a bad thig, if the songs weren't too long and too monotonous. 3/5

*** Not my favorite of their work. Prefer This is Happening and Sound of Silver!

Fun album.

Feels a bit like you need to be on drugs to fully appreciate this sound. That electronic sound is unique & interesting for the first while then just becomes a little grating, it doesn't help that the tracks are each pretty long...or do they just feel long. It's ok.

This was fine. Surprised I didn't recognize any of this, honestly. It seems like music Pandora would have added into my stations based on how clearly influenced they are by the types of 80s goth rock and synthetic rock I love. But it didn't give me much new, just kind of made me want to go listen to Joy Division instead. 3.5 but rounded down to 3.

This album and band have an outsized reputation that neither really meets. What’s good is pretty good, and what’s bad (when they go full talking heads, my disdain for which is already stated in these records) is pretty bad. The rest of it is fine, but nothing revolutionary or legendary like I’d been led to believe

lcd soundsystem was like, THE band you got fun of for liking at the college i went to for some reason? which is a shame, my 20yo, pre-SSRI self would have been into this, but it didn't particularly hit for me

I feel like I've heard most of this incidentally and it's fine. generally I like covers of lcd soundsystem more than the originals though

Good background music.

First song is by far the best. Also, dance yrself clean is iconic

Fine. A decent album.

I used to think I didn’t like LCD Soundsystem and now I know I’m OK with LCD Soundsystem

3- Stars (7/15)

Pretty fun. Like that one band

3 - I went in expecting a repeat of Sound of Silver, which I did not really like, but I was surprised that I didn't mind it. I liked the 80's vibe it was giving off and I found his voice more enjoyable this time around. It might have been because I was busy, but I didn't even really mind the lengths of the songs. I could see this rubbing off on me eventually and getting a higher score.

This was a decent album, with a mix of listenable grooves and awash with all kinds of musical influences. Not especially memorable though. On paper, this feels like something I should like, but it mostly lands flat with me. Fave Songs: Change Yr Mind, Call the Police, How Do You Sleep?, Oh Baby

Too long but decent I guess. 2.5? Maybe a 3

I mean, it's cool to have James back but this is still the weakest LCD album so I don't know why it's included here.

Songs on the first half of the album are insane, songs on the second half are boring. Maybe this was, again, a too long winded album for the content it had to offer. Anyway, I like LCD, just can't understand why this specific album must be one of the best 1001 albums ever.

Keywords: Naked and Afraid meets 70's synth Notable song: change yr mind

Not as inspired as their earlier work but an enjoyable listen.

american dream was a really weird album for me. The songs, like every other electronica album i have done, sound like drug trips and are mostly really long. But for whatever reason, I found myself enjoying it. The electronic sounds somehow found a way to actually work really well together and could make for some pretty groovy tracks. It is a tough album to get into but if you can, you will find a pretty good album. Best Song: how do you sleep? Worst Song: other voices

Hear a ton of talking heads on here. Enjoyed it but not sure I’d come back to many of the so gs

I can definitely hear the Talking Heads influence here but also maybe the Killers? I do have a better understanding of why LCD Soundsystem is considered a rock group generally though (the ending of “Emotional Haircut” making the best case for this argument). “How do you sleep” sounds like Drums/Space which was amusing to me.

LCD Soundsystem always reminds me of my ex.

When this album came out, I was against its very existence. LCD Soundsystem had just had a very dramatic and pre-meditated dissolution accompanied by an epic farewell tour and all-time great concert film. To come back a few years later like nothing had ever happened felt like a betrayal and a cash grab. That having been said, I did quite like the album at the time, which served to piss me off even more. Now it’s time to revisit it several years after the fact, and I think it’s still a fun listen. It is definitely bloated and overblown, but I enjoy that this album does experiment with the band’s sound quite a bit. In fact, this time around I find myself gravitating more towards the atypical tracks. Songs like Other Voices, Tonite, and Emotional Haircut were among my faves when this record came out, but now they represent a dimension I don’t particularly enjoy. They sound like they were written in a session where the band sat down and said “let’s write some LCD Soundsystem songs”. They’re almost a parody of the classic sound in how they try to sum up all the major parts of the sound. All in all though, enjoyable. I wish it were trimmed down, and I wish it didn’t still make me feel betrayed. Certainly far from their best work. Top tracks: Oh Baby, I Used To, Change Yr Mind, How Do You Sleep?, American Dream, Pulse (v.1)

i love the bops (oh baby, american dream, call the police, tonite) the others i dont care about

This one was tough. There are some really great hits on this, but to get them you have to get through some bland songs. Especially given how good they were before this album, I think I have to give it 3

3.5 This was fun. Like a modern day talking heads with a little Hotline Miami thrown in for good measure

love these guys, but not so much on this album - other stuff is amazing, live in particular this feels like an epilogue

'Change yr mind' sounds like Bowie, as if it was an unused song from the Heroes sessions. That must surely be Robert Fripp on guitar. Otherwise, nothing to report on this album. No idea how to describe it. There are guitars but it has an electronic feel. It's not rock or hip hop. Beyond that I really can't say what it is, but I'm not interested.

“Call the police” might be the best song they’ve ever recorded but in general it isn’t nearly as good as their earlier work.

oh baby, american dream, emotional haircut petey esque backgrounds, good lyrics

I like this American Dream but it’s not even the second best LCD Soundsystem record. I’m surprised it’s on the list.

This was new to me, which is good. It isn't very good, which wasn't.

I love LCD Soundsystem. this is arguably their weakest album, no idea why it's on this list.

Listened Before? N Pretty cool. Tons of obvious Talking Heads, Bowie and Cure influences here. Multiple times I forgot I wasn't listening to some obscure 'Heads album during this one. Some of the songs drag on, but it's mostly a pretty unique sound and fun to listen to. I have heard another album by these guys, but it didn't stick out as much as this one. Added to Library? N Songs added to playlist: call the police

Ok. Nice beats. Good sounds. He means it.

I can appreciate a good electronic album. It all, once again, kinda sounded the same.

Fun! Some tracks very like U2, except good. Semi intelligent dance pop. Not something I listen to much but when I do I’ll certainly check this out again. Forgettable, but in a good way.

Would you look at that? The first album I've listened to so far from the 21st century. Neat! Anyway, this album's alright. I think the general concept with what American Dream wants to say is pretty good. The subject matter is quite modern and the writing does good at showing these themes at times. The song "black screen" is a pretty good and a nice tribute to David Bowie. I think some of the instrumentals are pretty groovy. The bonus instrumental track "pulse (v.1)" really shows that LCD Soundsystem knows what they're doing. I do have a few problems though. Even though some instrumentals are really good, others have some weird decisions at times. My other problem is that it could've been a bit shorter. I don't really think this needed to be nearly 90 minutes. Because of this, it kind of dragged a bit at points. Overall, probably one of my least favorite albums for this project so far, but I wouldn't call it bad, and I see why others like it. I can definitely see this being subject to change, as other albums that show up might be a lot worse. light 3/5.

James Murphy sonant més pop que mai. Indietronica de primer nivell, però allunyada del so que va fer de Murphy un dels herois de l'electrònica dels '00s

I thought I really liked this but Max convinced me otherwise. I gotta start reading up on these albums.

I actually enjoyed about the first half of this album, and then did not enjoy the rest very much at all.

BL: thought this was a weird one to feature. As in my eyes it was always the weakest of the LCD Soundsystem records. I suppose it was a big hurrah reunion album but besides it being in the zeitgeist when the list was made I can’t see why it would feature. But maybe my thoughts will change on the relisten. AL: while I do view this album slightly more positively on the relisten. My thoughts still remain mostly the same. There is much more use of ambient tones and repetition within this record, which maybe makes it an objectively better dance record, as a sit down and listen electronic record it doesn’t stand to the same standard as Sound of Silver or This is Happening FT: “how do you sleep?”, “call the police” 3/5

if the entire album was like the last 4 minutes of Black Screen it would have been a way better album.

OK electronic album, a bit more repetitve and derivative than some of his other work.

This album is not good enough to fake breaking up over, but my cat liked it.

It was enjoyable but not as good as Sound of Silver. Leans into the Krautrock side of things a bit more and some songs packed direction, my favourite tracks were ones like emotional haircut that had an indie side to them. Might grow on me with a few more listens, right now it's a 3.

Enjoyed most of the beats. "i used to" was my favourite song. I cannot get away from finding some of it a bit daft though. Music for music's sake, I didn't get the point of the album.

I didn't think this album was that different from the earlier Sound of Silver. I have the same complaints of the repetitive nature of songs that I think go on too long. It's not a bad album, just not particularly for me. Highlights: Oh Baby Call The Police American Dream
