Reviews (page 11 of 12)
You can tell they’re running out of ideas.
Meh. I don’t know what it is but I’ve never enjoyed this album all that much. They have better stuff. I liked maybe 1 song here. Maybe not even enough for 3 stars. Hmmmm
oh so this is what the folk revival bands were smoking circa 2011. not as good as I thought it would be
⭐️⭐️.5/5. Never been a huge Arcade Fire fan, and this album helped me define why a bit better. Too rocky and evocative of other bands and eras I don’t enjoy, and none of it new or different. Felt like something I’ve heard a million times, and not in a good way. I did enjoy the lyrical focus on religion and struggling with it.
You know, I wanted to be at least OK with it, but I just didn’t like it.
grand production but left no memorable impression. the entire album sort of passed me by despite its density. 2/5
day 10: this feels like an album a dude with a beanie who drinks oat mochas would rave about. always hurts a band when their debut is far and away their best album. like, where do you go after funeral??? i suppose at least this isn’t pink elephant. anyway it sounds nice, is still an art rock album and has the same lovely intimate vocals and melodies on the lush orchestral backdrops as funeral. the tracks just feel loose to me?? like any of them could fit anywhere on the album? also just a bit boring otherwise. also the only album i’ve had to listen to twice now before reviewing because the first time i played it it finished and i thought alright i suppose it was an album. also sucks that the lead is an abusive cunt since it makes me not want to enjoy this. anyway, first half is dull as a brick, second half has some good songs which do make up for it a bit. the well and the lighthouse stretch until the last song sounds nice. at least the band picked it back up for the suburbs!
Decent but generic hipster music. Not bad listening.
Some really high highs and some pretty bad stuff
As a general rule, indie sucks. Ok, a couple songs get the sandals sliding and over-tatted arms a swaying. Decent. But when it goes all Anthem Indie, it’s just annoying. Arena Indie? Who does that? Pass.
Clean and cool pop album.
Very anthem-ish but without much substance
Lame. 1.5/5
I thought I would love it but it all sounded the same.
Mid
I never liked arcade fire, i always thought they were incredibly bland and incredibly overrated. They got lucky with that one stupid song in 2009 or 10 and they should fade off into the distance and certainly not be mentioned in any lists of important records
I thought this would be way cooler than it was. I only like when he sings in his upper register and when the songs are fast. The only song I liked was The Well and the Lighthouse
Było obiecująco i coś w sobie ma ale finalnie jednak nie da sie tego sluchac
indie rock, man. did Arcade Fire ruin it? no. that's wayy too harsh of an idea to humor. but they do represent a lot of the trends it had in the 2000s that i'm less keen on. but they had their moments and they could put together a decent song. i just don't think there's that much compelling here, really. Funeral at least i can understand the romance of. the lyrics are good but there's not much pathos in their presentation idk deserves to be one of the 1001? maybe i guess. b-b-b-b-but i don’t like arcade fire!! wahhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!
Critical darlings but I can take or leave this tbh.
Can't get on with these guys not sure why.
Wow. They are like a modern day Bruce Springsteen. But nearly twenty years old now, I guess. So .... Like Bruce Springsteen. Hmmm. I'm not much of a Bruce Springsteen fan come to think of it.
Bad Christmas songs
A bit confused. Typical Canadians.
Not mine
Yet another album that nobody needed to hear before they died. Utterly derivative music without bringing anything new to the table paired with insipid lyrics. Keep The Car Running and No Cars Go are ok. The rest is anywhere from dull to irritating
Lowkey dreary.
The first half sounds like a low-go attempt taken over by a Bowie acolyte. The rest just sounds like Bowie. I did enjoy one song.
2,4/5
Definitely the least favorite of the first 4 albums. Felt like the B-sides of all the other great stuff.
meh
Jeg likte albumet. Mot slutten ble det veldig majestisk, som jeg synes minnet meg om æraen da den kom ut. Samtidig ga den meg kanskje ikke så mye, noen av låtene var litt meh.
How does Arcade Fire have 3 albums in the 1000 most important albums list? Nothing interesting happens, and nothing innovative is tried. It's not bad, but it's not exactly great either.
meh. not my bag. some groovy kicks.
Millennial music that did not really grab me.
Maybe it might change later, or I might need to listen to other projects from them. But I just couldn't get into this album at all. It doesn't sound bad, but it sounds bleak. I feel like I'm listening to U2, which is not bad by itself. But is U2. 2.5/5 ⭐⭐⭐
Nothing stood out to me.
Indifferent to this type of indie
95/1001. Never knew Arcade Fire too well (never bothered to listen to a full album that is), but it seems I didn't miss too much. A sort of a 1990s U2 of 2000s? And that is not a compliment. If this is Indie, I wonder what mainstream commercial rock / pop music is then, Coldplay?. For me this sounds bland, calculated, uninteresting, uninspired, dishonest… Nothing that would light my fire. Well, I didn't totally hate it, so 2.
I like Arcade Fire, and I like this album okay but the religious allusions in this album fall flat for me. not bad, but there's not a lot that I'll seek out specifically
blah
Yeah let’s knock all of these out at once. There has been a tragic fire at Rucker’s. Ruckers? Is “Rucker” a person? Why am I referencing an obscure south Calgary arcade from the early 2000s. Listen. I have that era on the brain after limping through Linkin Park. Emphasis on the “L.” I am hoping this is a stark left turn from the aforementioned nu-metal cringe and I’ll be able to breathe once more. Black Mirror - The song about the show. This may come as a huge shock, but I make it my goal to avoid shows that the general livid clamours over until years later. Then I feel better about myself for enjoying it. Gotta live insufferable contrarians. Actually, you don’t. Anyway, this song is really mid. Keep the Car Running - I’m not hating this, but there isn’t all that much to sink my teeth into. The vocals are slightly annoying and almost reminiscent of Bruce Springsteen, which should be an automatic zero, but I’ll give this a chance to elevate beyond this. Neon Bible - These quirky fellas making the title track the third song?? Wild. This is the kind of craziness you get from mid 2000s hipsters. That term used to mean these people! Intervention - An ode to the sniper rifle from Call of Duty Modern Warfare II. Long may its scope be steady and may the silent shot killcams ever be “dank.” Black Wave/Bad Vibrations - Beach Boys diss track. FUCK surfing. NOBODY is learning how. EVERYBODY hates it. This is an alright track actually. The French is a cool touch as they are a Montreal band. Not bad. Ocean of Noise - This is a sweet song. A little long, but it’s a gentle indie track that appeals to me greatly. Excellent work, problematic band. The Well and the Lighthouse - This is that restaurant that has the 25 dollar brunch. At least the line cook has stick and poke tattoos and it’s in a formerly vibrant neighborhood. I think these days, we’re skipping this step and going right to the chain restaurants. I love real estate investing!!!! Decent song. Nothing crazy. (Antichrist Television Blues) - (don’t tell anyone, but I also don’t want to work in buildings downtown and I really can’t tell if I like or hate this album) Windowsill - Another perplexing journey through independent rock and/or roll. Highly repetitive and one of my least favourite refrains thus far. No Cars Go - See they’re touting the incredible walkability of their gentrified community. Those heys are pretty suspect. I feel the brim on my millennial hat expanding. Oh god, my man bun is getting more quirky by the second. ERRRRRRM NO. Make it stop. My Body is a Cage - Same, brother. Same. My cage is a body. My car is a cage, my motorcycle is uninsured. My insurance is a cage. Cages are my cage. Nicolas Cage is my insurance. The Declaration of Independence is in my motorcycle. Governmental artifacts are my insurance policy. My motorcycle remains uninsured. The louder vocal passages can be too reminiscent of Kings of Leon or some such tripe. The quiet portions oscillate between mildly enjoyable and mildly grating. There is a germ of stomp-clap music that is beginning to percolate in these 11 tracks. I can almost smell the barn weddings that will plague our earth in the late aughts/early 10s. I am spinning my wheels here. I don’t think I enjoyed my time here, but that’s could change as I move forward in this interminable slog. How much can I handle in one day? We shall see. 2 HIGHLIGHTS: Ocean of Noise, My Body is a Cage
Good band. Good music.
meh...
Not my vibe
Wack
This is #day361 of my #1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie challenge, and… this week marks a year since I started this project, which is kind of crazy. But I'm hell-bent on continuing the journey, despite stumbling across pebbles like this one. I mean, this is my second Arcade Fire record. As I've said before, I don't get why this band is represented with three albums while other artists aren't on the list at all. This is peak inessential indie-schmindie. "My Body Is a Cage" is the only highlight, and it's far too late in the tracklist. Alright, I can also relate to "Windowsill," I guess. Otherwise, this is a 2 out of 5. Looking forward to #day362.
Pretty standard late 2000's indie fare. I've never understood the appeal behind indie darlings like The National, The Strokes, Wilco, or Arcade Fire, or why music magazines like Pitchfork bow to them for making, for all intents and purposes, mild mid-tempo rock for aging hipsters. While Neon Bible probably doesn't deserve my initial jab (I do have to admit "Keep The Car Running" and "Intervention" caused me to thaw a little bit), the rest of the album kind of matches my original description. I'll admit to enjoying the variety of instrumentation and some of the songwriting, but this to me, Arcade Fire just screams "Please take me seriously. I am an adult with complex thoughts and feelings. I am mature. I am an adult. Please take me seriously"
Not my favorite of theirs, but a very solid album with a couple of excellent songs.
Is k. I realized that this stuff is the precursor to the hoot holler stomp nonsense of the 2010’s and it kinda took me out.
Cool grandiose rock sound with rich orchestral, folksy and twee elements as well as booming dollops of Springsteen and church organ. Absolutely withered husks of songs with wafty microgram melodies that mean to build somewhere but just don’t turn into anything memorable or interesting. Wan Butler’s quivery waily delivery gets pretty annoying as well. The best song is probably No Cars Go which is recycled from their debut EP from 2002. Other than that this is a perfect follow up album to Funeral.
reminds me of the killers if they were a christian rock band with a little folk, a little techno, and a bad recording mic
mid
I’m not sure if I like the vibe nature of this album, like it was alight but not my thing.
A bit like Mountain Goats, I know they have a devoted following but they don’t really do anything for me.
I liked it ... but I shouldn't look at the lyrics.
Arcade fire n’est vraiment pas pour moi.
Another day, another 21st century indie rock band. And .. not a lot to say about this one. If I had been the right age when this was new might have been interesting at the time, but I am not and had already listened to what obviously influenced this. It’s a bit too full of itself and overblown, and in my vacuum, never heard a note by them before, seems a little soulless and an empty sounding recording, surprisingly given their name lacks any real fire, like they are a shoe gazing poetry recital without any actual emotion. Springsteen is one of the keywords, really? That’s a wannabe stretch, if you squint real hard at a thousand yards at twilight on a moon less night. Just meh to these ears, 2 Star
Indie’s worst impulses. Yuck
Doomy-gloomy but ultimately didn't leave much of a mark. Only on the third playthrough did it really start to leave an impression. The lead sounds like the Boss really straining for extra emotion. (probably a 2.5)
Not my style but to each their own.
No me dijo nada. Podria ser una bandita en festival que mire antes del show principal
Pretty boring
kinda disappointing and im an arcade fire fan. this was a step down from their previous work but it makes for good lullaby music also im not even religious get away ..
Oh my god. That is a great disappointment. I never listened to a whole Arcade Fire album and it is horrible. The melodies are too cluttered, most of the lyrics are shallow and simple, and the delivery of Butler on the vocals are tiring after a while trying to mimic Bowie.i dont see the hype, really.
There was so much hype around arcade fire when this album came out. I didn’t like it then, and I still don’t think it’s all that great. Their next album, The Suburbs, is solid, and Funeral was good. Everything else they’ve made, including Neon Bible, is mediocre.
It's going for Springsteen-style catharsis, but it comes off as a little much. (I guess I could call that "trying too hard", but I think trying is a good thing and am loathe to look down on it.) Some of the sonic embellishments are more annoying than effective. There's a baffling 'ding' sound throughout a lot of these songs that irked me, and "Black Wave/Bad Vibrations" has this string motif that was also bothersome (and the female vocals on that song are mixed like she's singing at the end of a padded hallway). "(Antichrist Television Blues)" is a straight-up Springsteen impression in a manner I do not find charming. I feel like if I heard this when I was much younger I'd be into it, but unfortunately is seems like this kind of labored, classic rock-indebted indie rock rarely does it for me these days.
This band was huge in the 2010s they had 3 number 1 albums in a row and a couple top tens before the 2010s then Covid happened... and someone accused the lead singer of some type of sexual abuse (I don't think he was ever charged or even if anything came from those allegations) and their latest album (2025's Pink Elephant) did not even chart in the Billboard 200, and I mean AT ALL whoever the accuser is/was did a lot of damage. Was the damage earned? I have no idea. To me the above is the most interesting thing about Arcade Fire. Neon Bible isn't a bad album but to me it's a very boring one. Inoffensive as warm milk. It plays and then it ends and makes no impact, good or bad on me. Boring indie rock that exists for seemingly no real reason like mildew or Mayim Bialik.
Meh! Boring pretentious indie. Två!
Boring
A band and album I desperately tried to get into to be cool back in the day, but I just can't do it.
Pretentieuze rotzooi David Bowie kloon
2/5 takie nudne
Weak
Second AF album in a fortnight. This was considerably inferior to Suburbs. Liked the organ and church vibes, cool they recorded in a converted church, but this was pretty boring even by 2000s indie standards
Idk man this just bounced right off me
I'm starting to think Arcade Fire is overrated.
Just did not like it, don't enjoy the lead singer's voice, and didn't enjoy many of the songs.
Unfortunately disappointing. I have loved Intervention and My Body is a Cage for many years, but now I get why those are the only two I knew. Not a lot of other gems on this album.
It's ok. Not their best but ok
Yeah it was ok but one to hear before you die? I don’t think so! I’ve never really got into them to be honest, a friend bought me an album of theirs for my birthday 20 years or so ago and I’ve listened to it twice maybe.
Mm ok don’t love
Ok... marginally better than the previous Arcade Fire album (which made me genuinely angry) but certainly not good. Just total millennial indie slop. Some parts made me laugh so that has to count for something.
It wasn't that bad, but it was pretty generic. Nothing special.
From wiki: "released around the same time as other droll shit that sounds the same during a horrible time in popular music."
The title track is 2 minutes, and when it got to the 1 minute mark I wanted to skip it. Pretty much how I felt about the whole album.
I dislike Arcade Fire, both for their music and their attitude towards others. From my memory, they act entitled when on tour and treat others very poorly. Again though, this is from memory and I'm pretty sure it was Arcade Fire that everyone was complaining about. Regardless of that fact, I don't really like their music. I don't hate it, I just don't find it enjoyable either.
Oh wow, I'm sure i couldn't die without listening to *generic album* by *generic band*. It sure sounds different than the rest of the bands doing the exact same thing
I've already heard this album before bruh
- boring -
It's like listening to paint dry
Meh
Why does a song called “Antichrist Television Blues” have a happy upbeat instrumental with claps on 2 and 4. Not as lyrically interesting as it wants to be and mostly incoherent with a handful of interesting moments 4/10
Black mirror was a waste of time. I think I’m already getting something from this experience tho. I think I can safely say that I prefer instrumentally driven tracks. I had a hunch but this song “keep the car running” I think may have confirmed it. I didn’t mind the vocals per se but they didn’t make me feel anything. The instruments were fantastic and creative, and what I would have traded for an instrumental section instead of another sung verse. Would have been amazing. Violins are gorgeous, so why let it play second fiddle in neon Bible? Pun very well intended. “Black waves/bad vibrations” was quite good. Twists and turns that kept me hooked. “The well and the lighthouse” to “the windowsill” were painfully boring. No cars go wasn’t an all-time favorite BUT after a point it gave the spotlight to its various instrument choices which was incredibly gratifying and it had a payoff even I felt. Shoulda ended the album honestly. The final track honestly felt like a less successful attempt at that.
Too indie for me. No thanks.
I know that a lot of people are huge fans of Arcade Fire, but I never really spent any time listening to them. After listening to this, I don't know why the fan base is so fervent. This album is DULL. It's not bad, but it's worse than forgettable. The songs are just... there. Not a single one stood out, and I got two songs in, looked at how long the album was, and was relieved that it was relatively short. But still, even it being a 37ish minute album felt too long. I wouldn't reach to turn it off and I wouldn't be mad if I heard it again, but it would definitely bore me again a second time.
Not my cup of tea
Sem graça, existem depressões melhores.
Wasn’t horrible but I didn’t care for this. 2.5/5
Wasn’t great. 2.5
the umpteenth time I just realize and admit that I do not like arcade fire...
Mediocre hipster bullshit
Carly had the observation that this sounds like arcade fire doing Bruce Springsteen and I concur. Fine enough to listen to but wouldn’t seek out
I can’t remember anything about this album ten minutes after playing it. Ancestor of Imagine Dragons, I suppose. That one song about driving a car or something is okay.
Ok but just kind of basic, run-of-the-mill alt-rock
4 / 10
Spaced out junk
Trash
Folksy soft rock with synthy/ambient orchestration, ahead of its time (considering Mumford and Sons and Lumineers coming some years later). Springsteen-esque in places (Intervention). Killers-like too Not enjoying much in particular though.. Best track - No cars go
Meh
Couple of absolute belters on here. Always was a shame about this band's personality. Anecdotal observation: The fact that dudes who see this type of band as the peak of indie don't like Wire and Black Flag sums up my issue with this sort of band and their sort of fans.
Felt very meh about this one. It sounded similar to other 2000's indie rock and I couldn't follow the album theme.
Knew of this band's existence, but man they lack a presence or solid sound, dope name though. Latter half of Ocean of Noise sounded awesome but the rest of the tracks just felt empty and void of personality. I'm thinking its the lead singer, his style is just not for me, its a sort of whisper yell, and its not unique enough to stand out. I really enjoyed the outro of No Cars Go too. The album should've ended there.
so lala.
An utterly there album. I just don't like arcade fire. 2nd song at least had something.
I think I've come to terms with the fact that I just don't like Arcade Fire. The idea of recording this in a renovated church with organs and big strings and whatnot is pretty cool, and I applaud it. It works with about 3 of the songs on this record and the rest sound like shit and don't work out in my ears the way I suspect the band thinks they would. Ultimately, that's just because I don't like the way they sound at all. This is the third album we've gotten from Arcade Fire and they all sound the same. I think I was just the wrong age when they were a big deal to appreciate what they are trying to do as for me the whole thing is just a gigantic effort in attempting to sound huge and serious but it comes across as a parody of that. This album is the worst offender in this precisely because of the way they recorded it. They get close - "My Body is a Cage" and "Black Wave/Bad Vibrations" can almost be called ruined post rock, but it's still ruined. I have no idea if this is true but I imagine the male singer has an ego the size of a skyscraper and I bet he's insufferable. That's the vibe I get from all this. Personal opinion of course, but I am pretty done with this band.
This was a pretty decent album, but I never really felt like it got all the way there. It felt like it was building towards something, without a finale/goal. Didn't hate it, production quality was solid, but I probably won't be returning to this one.
It’s alright. Not a huge fan.
**An ok album
Slowly started to just drag on and on. One and done.
It’s ok.
So much of this indie hipster early 2000s sound is really just ordinary pop music. This is about as experimental as Coldplay. It’s just a lot of overhyped nothing.
I did not enjoy it. The extra sounds masked the lyrics too much.
Annoying
Zwar Independent aber ohne Profil
it turns out im not really a huge arcade fire fan. listened to this on friday, and all i can recall is the back half of the album was stronger in my opinion. regarding the small blurb that showed up with this album - "Publications like NME and IGN praised the album for its grandiose nature, while Rolling Stone and Uncut opined that it resulted in a distant and overblown sound." I tend to agree with the latter.
Generally okay, but I don’t know why “We Will Fall” was included in the album, and I don’t know why it had to be 10 minutes long.
Similar to the last album. Good components but strong enough for a 3. Sorry for the weak reviews. Almost caught up!
Keep the Car Running sounds like a Bruce Springsteen song. I have heard of Arcade Fire but never really knew much about them. A little mundane and hard to immediately see why it’s on the list. I didn’t dislike it, but I wasn’t all that interested throughout.
I was kind of looking forward to this one. I'd heard of Arcade Fire and how highly regarded they and their albums are but had never heard any of their songs before. I don't really know what all the fuss is about to be honest. Whiny and dull is what I got from this album, and this is meant to be one of three of their holy trinity of work. I just hope the other two are better than this. Nothing really reached out and grabbed me, I was struggling to find a song that really stood out. Maybe 'The Well And The Lighthouse' and '(Antichrist Television Blues)' because they upped the tempo a bit after the slow tunes. I quite liked 'No Cars Go' because it sounded quite similar to the Prefab Sprout classic 'The King Of Rock 'N' Roll'. I wouldn't say I outright disliked this, but I was bored, and sometimes that's worse. At least if you don't like something you have feelings about it. With this album though, I wouldn't care in the slightest if I never listened to it again. I certainly don't think I needed to listen to it before I died.
I found this pretty unbearable, I don't know what it is about his voice but it's a cheese grater on my ears, the music I guess is fine but it seems to substandard Cali/Indie rock it just faded into nothingness for me
I just can't. I've never been able to appreciate this band.
better than expected, still not my cup of tea
not a fan
During my indie phase (circa 2014-15) I was quite into Arcade Fire, especially The Suburbs, but I didn't enjoy this return to them after many years. I found it really musically disinteresting and didn't even make it through the whole album
Boring. There’s a reason I don’t go to church.
5/10, not my type of music but still enjoyable at times. Overall super boring and not able to hold my interest. favorite track was: Black Wave / Bad Vibrations
Boring
Pretentious and boring
I just don't really fw these guys
I wanted to like this so much more than I did. Indie noise at best
que bronca cuando un album que me gusta mucho está hecho por una persona de mierda, tan difícil es ser un ser humano normal loco??
While there's occasionally a decent part of a song, overall I don't like this, and I struggled to pin down why. I was listening to this album on autoplay and then there was a song where I thought: oh, they finally cleaned it up and this one actually sounds good... and it was U2's City of Blinding Lights. Having that comparison helped: Arcade Fire sounds muddy and bombastic without resolution, the singing is alternatively breathless or whining or imploring and almost always pained. I know there are people who enjoy this style, but I don't; I expect the occasional surprise from them, but nothing consistently strong like the Dire Straits we just listened to.
Very underwhelming and lackluster. Definitely some solid moments, but most of the tracks lack an edge or interesting quality. The album never really evolves beyond indie quirky, and just feels underdone and almost grating at times. Decent, but not worth coming back to. Top tracks: Ocean of Noise, Windowsill
Feels too pretentious and artsy rather than being actually good. It's what I thought Dark Side of the Moon was going to be like before I listened to it and realized it's a masterpiece. This album is really bad and not worth listening to.
One really good song over and over
Makes sense this was recorded in a church. I'm glad it wasn't too gospelly. Never was huge into Arcade Fire even though they were huge in 2000s. Are they worthy of the list? Maybe but I'm not sure this album is. I suspect their debut will make it and I think that will be too many from the band. Neon Bible is not bad but only song that stood out was "No Cars Go" which I had heard before. Best track on the album although I didn't really like the harmony choice with 2 leads. One time listen for me...2.15.
Too pompous for me. And sad. Not in a "makes you sad" way, but in a "some guy you barely know is sharing his misery with you but you would rather be somewhere else" way
not my album
Ok
Seems a bit of an odd choice to me. I think suburbs and funeral are both better albums for sure and not sure if arcade fire warrants three albums really assuming those others are on here. "No cars go" is very good and it's not a bad album, but definitely lacks some of the juice some of their other stuff has
I've never decided if I like them or not. I don't think I do.
Music made by the type of people that appear to have written their own Spotify bio.
Do you remember being 18? Idealistic and still impressionable, even if you'd like to think you're not. You go to shows all the time because music means everything to you. And at one show, where you see one of your favorite bands, an amazing, earnest cadre of musicians who blow you away with their talent & insight, you happen to get a few great photos because you're so close to the stage. You tag the musicians and are blown away when one of them actually DMs you. But it quickly goes very very wrong. His messages are flirtatious, provocative. Even though he's married. Even though he's nearly 20 years older than you. You try to figure out how to tell him to stop, but he doesn't. & it just gets worse. I guess the album is okay. But the earnest, self-tortured stylings come across as a just a *bit* false when you know how fucking gross Win Butler is.
I don’t get the appeal of this album. Not at all. It is not at all interesting. Nothing makes it stand out to me.
Their sound is recognizable, and although I liked Funeral, I'm a bit frustrated with this one. Their music seems to have lost part of its candor, while not really renewing itself.
it's fine, general purpose hipster rock i suppose. wouldn't listen to again. 1.5
Thought I liked arcade fire... Did not like this album.
takes some doing to make me sad while making a heart and bow themed bridal shower scrapbook, well done arcade fire
I don’t like Arcade Fire. Some songs sound like Bruce Springsteen. I don’t like Bruce Springsteen either.
Yawn. The musicians are not unskilled, but this just wasn't for me.
Not a fan, something just seemed off about it. It sounded like music but didn't feel like music, I don't know how to explain it.
A solid 2 stars. 1 for effort and 1 for ending it under an hour. Nothing too memorable. Forgot the name of the band half way into it.
Pretty boring - kind of gloomy, not melodic enough to suit my tastes, and the singer has quite a whiny voice. But not actively bad
Really not my taste
..
I finished it but would not return
Groupe inconnu. L'instrumentation est originale, mais je ne trouve pas le résultat très intéressant. Aucun morceau ne m'a marqué. =>2/5
Not a big fan.
Christians have a hard time getting people to read the Holy Bible because it's deemed as "boring", but the Neon Bible isn't much more exciting. Arcade Fire's "Funeral" album has a little magic to it, and was much more exciting; this one deflates that. Maybe that was their Funeral. Favorite Song: "Keep The Car Running"
This is a band I really didn’t care for when they first came out. Trying to keep an open mind here. The first track is kinda cool. Second one not so much. From there it’s very meh. Like a pretentious Bruce Springsteen. The last track is closer to Neil Young and is probably the best tune.
my favourite of theirs, quite varied.
I can understand why Arcade Fire's Funeral is on this list. Neon Bible however the band's play on their faith and struggles with it falls flat and doesn't help convince a listener that this is a must-listen album. 2.5/5.
It was okay.
Drony whiny indie garbage
I just cannot get into Arcade Fire. I'm not sure why. I listened to this album three times and didn't save one song. It's a bummer, I want to like them!
Over. Rated.
The first Arcade Fire album on this list was pretty good and entertaining... This wasn't... 2/5
Bleh
It's fine. It's okay. I keep thinking it sounds like a bunch of older stuff, but I can't quite put my finger on who it is they're trying to sound like. Maybe it's everyone, they want to be all previous popular bands so are throwing everything at it in the hope something sticks. I get why some would really like this, but it sounds like a cheap copy of a copy of a copy.
Pas ma cam
I know the name, I am familiar with a few of their songs, but I've never understood the hype around them, so I welcomed the opportunity to listen to an entire album that's considered essential. I like the opening track, "Black Mirror", "Keep The Car Running" feels familiar and sounds like a Springsteen penned song, didn't care for "Intervention" at all. It wasn't long before I was bored. His voice does nothing for me (he wouldn't last long on the cruise ship) it doesn't make me want to keep listening and I'm at a loss for why they're popular. They feel like that band everyone tells you you need to love, but they can't explain why. Not Top 1001 for me, I don't feel it's that solid, it has no anchor songs & I can't imagine it's influential cause all I hear are other bands in their songs (Springsteen, Talking Heads, The Killers, Chris Isaak). Not worthy, but thanks for confirming what I already thought.
some of it is good, it's just like. Some of it gives fl and it feels like i was listening to the x ambassadors at times. guy has a really nice voice, but I don't think I'll ever wanna listen again. title track good
I don’t think it’s possible to make an album more forgettable than this. Music For Airports was more attention grabbing. Listening to this at times felt like listening to a bad Bruce Springsteen tribute act who for some reason refused to play any of the hits. The sound quality on this was also awful for an album recorded in the 2000s. Perhaps there’s a reason albums are generally recorded in studios and not churches. Honestly, literally nothing about this was interesting; It’s not even bad enough to merit a 1.
Nothing really stood out for me. I do like the album cover though
Exceptionally mid. Chris hit the nail on the head saying it was too boring to be worthy of a 1.
It's my sort of music, but I never liked Arcade Fire. And this hasn't changed my opinion. Not sure why I don't like it.
Eh, I don’t get it. Samey music that just sounds sad or bored.
honestly not too bad, was okay. Higher 2 I’d say.
Neon Bible, like all Arcade Fire, just ain't for me. Not a sound I appreciate or enjoy, I get a sense of the atmosphere and performance they're trying to get across, but it bores the shit out of me. A 2 based on that, they've never ever been my thing.
Aika lame, 2007 vuoden levy enkä oikeen ymmärtäny mitä uutta/erikoista toi musaskeneen
Gave it a shot but arcade fire just isn't for me. Just seemed very monotonous. Low 2.
Another pretentious indie folk rock album
Some songs were decent, some dragged out a bit long. A mixed bag but not many I'd listen to again. I didn't mind listening to it though. Highlights: Keep the Car Running The Well and the Lighthouse
Скучные библейские синты. Писюн не встал
3 - Some tracks hit: Cemetry Gates, I know It's Over, second half of There Is a Light That Never Goes Out. Despite this, many are very forgettable or just mid. The harsh transitions between tracks can be jarring. I was mostly impressed that the album kept me mostly engaged throughout the run. It definitely benefits from being a short listen.
Maybe it's because of how ubiquitous it was , maybe it's the lead vocals, or maybe it's the sound mixing, but something didn't chime with me. Feels like a parody of everything people are known not to like about 2000s indie.
Felt very meh, almost like background music designed not to be noticed
Don’t remember much. Seemed ordinary.
Couldn't get into it. Just didn't care about any of it
They could have done with sneaking a few bottles of wine into the studio. Interesting, but too sombre for me. I could hear some good influences, from singer-songwriter right through to New Order, but they all came out badly in the mix. The Killers did it better; this is too intense and misses the fun.
Arcade Fire - another of those bands people rave about but I don't get and couldn’t even name a track. Still don’t get.
Overrated
Was not excited to listen to this in the slightest. I gave it a shot and it lived up to my expectations. All around a boring listen. Sure it is well produced and uses a lot of organ, but it's so whiny and boring in its compositions.
Hipster nonsense. It has a few decent spots but I'll never get the hype around this band.
No idea. Seems very bland to me. Yes it has an original dramatic quality to it but never seems to pick up any real pace. It's not as epic as it thinks it is. Also, like the similarly incomprehensibly successful The Killers he sings like a third rate Meatloaf, and I don't like Meatloaf either. I think you had to be there or something.
Not bad, per se, but a total snooze.
Definitely went into this fairly Arcade Fire neutral, but even then was surprised by how unmoved I was by this. Wish it did more for me! Oh well!
Liked it more than i remembered but i do not really enjoy these guys and their weirdo concept
Saved a few tunes
Ok, not my personal taste.
Not really my thing..
Boring and generic.
3/10
Every song sounds exactly the same except for whether it's a man or woman singing. There's having a cohesive sound on an album and there's being repetitive. If you like once Arcade Fire song, you probably like them all.
Boring, weak vocals so drained our by the music.
These guys like Springsteen, hm? A tad pretentious, and thinks it's much more interesting it actually is. I'd give 'em a 2.5 if I could but I'll round down because Win Butler is such an ass.
Ganska tråkigt. Hann bara lyssna en gång. Kanske hade varit bättre annars.
Another one that doesn’t do it for me. I appreciate the person who put together this website but I question who originally put together the thousand and one best albums to listen to. I sure would like a different list. I’m disappointed for more often not, and I have such a wide appreciation for music. 2
Aggressively mediocre. All the non-singles sound the same.
Meh
Did not enjoy
This sounds like something that most people like because it was what they listened to when they were younger, like 17 or 22, not because it’s terribly good. And even then I have a hunch they mainly listened to it because it was “indie,” so it made them cool to be included in that scene. Now I assume the appeal here is nostalgia, because try as I might I can’t find anything of interest here.
All sounds the same
booo
- felt like it had potential but it was never realized
I couldn't get into this at all. Sounded like a bunch of moody teenagers. Made it all the way through though, so it gets 2 stars.
Not a favorite.
mid downloaded one song
Not for me
If this is the birth of Indie Rock, I am glad it didn’t end here.
Such a boring band but I have this theory that if I was 13 years old when I first heard them I would have loved them. But yes, boring. Apart from No Cars Go, which is a really good song.
Fine. Just fine. Nothing that blew my hair back. My Body Is A Cage is a favorite, there's really nothing else from this album I enjoyed.
Such a step down from Funeral.
something about Arcade Fire really bothers me. Bores me even. I find it hard to be objective in this rating.
mind numbing did nothing for me.
Not good, not bad...
Early 2000s people would hate me. I don’t like Arcade Fire.
Reminded me a bit of The Killers, the vocals are a bit annoying, production quality was mixed. + for the use of a pipe organ, but - for the excessive use of it in Intervention. No Cars Go was the only thing that stood out for me.
Singers voice is miserable
all of the songs sounded the same
i never understood the appeal of arcade fire
Meh.
I remember being hyped into buying an Arcade Fire CD way back when. For some reason I didn't think they were great then, and it hasn't aged well for me. Ho-hum pretentious rock.
to be honest, i was kind of bored with this one.
This band just doesn’t go anywhere musically for me. I just wait for it to hit second gear and it rarely does. The lead singer guy is apparently a fucking creep, too.
boring
I didn't like this. I kind of zoned out through most of it to be honest, and now its done I can't remember a single track.
The crybaby bitch award goes to Neon Bible. I just can't dig the 80's hipster sound.
Altough they came from my town of Montréal i never listen to them and in indie rock in general to be honnest
could not get into it. its just okay. desperately need to relisten
1-Black Mirror I really love the sound of the occasional piano chords in the background in this song. The change to female vocals and then back to male vocals in the song is really well done, keeps the song fresh and not repetitive. 2-Keep The Car Running This song screams “walk of shame” to me, I can imagine coming home from the club and listening to this song, good song for the right circumstances. 3-Neon Bible Not my favourite so far in this album but is also a nice song for melancholy moods. 7- The Well and The Lighthouse This song feels like what a daydream is 8-(Antichrist Television Blues) This song really suits the lead’s voice, the guitar and drums really brings out the rock genre that suits the lead vocals. Not a huge fan of the subject matter/lyrics but has definitely trumped tracks 4,5,6 in this album. 10- No Cars Go The instrumental with the bass guitar at around ~2:10 and ~3:00 is a nice listen and really redeems the song for me, definitely one of my favourites from this album. 11-My Body Is A Cage Really grandiose instrumentals on this song, very theological. This is like if Radiohead were Christian, and it works super well. ——————————————————————— 4-Intervention Really didn’t like the heavy church elements in this song (orphan, bells) When the song picked up to chorus I started to like this song, but then I didn’t- it’s too “Whiney” for me, this is possibly due to the monotonous nature of the vocals in this track and how it feels like there is no “build up” or variety in the melody(?) 5- Black Wave/Bad Vibrations Song started off good, reminded me of the B-52s, but then it got too “Whiney” for me again 6-Ocean of Noise I would love this if I actually liked the lead singer’s voice. I like the background music but not his voice (I think his voice lacks personality and distinction.) 9- Windowsill Had to skip this song, I don’t like the first 2 minutes of it, after that when it picks up it does get better but I can’t add this song to my playlist if I can’t stand to hear the first two minutes. I don’t like the repetitive nature of the lyrics (“I don’t” x50) not my style. My Top 3: My Body is A Cage Black Mirror No Cars Go
--------------- Black Mirror Keep the Car Running Neon Bible Intervention Black Wave / Bad Vibrations Ocean of Noise The Well and the Lighthouse (Antichrist Television Blues) Windowsill No Cars Go My Body Is a Cage they r all not good. not horrible enough for 1 tho
Meh
Not my thing. But, can hear that they have good lyrics and a lot of musical talent. Felt like a grand project.
Not really my style, but I love My Body is a Cage.
#134. More hipster folk. Hurray... 2/5: boo
I wouldn't go as far as to say this outright sucks, but it's definitely not as good as I remember. The late 2000's indie sound is just not my favorite any more, it all sounds so radio ready and fabricated. Disingenuous is the word that comes to mind. That all being said, I dig the organ and strings on this album.
For me, I can't get past the vocalist. His sound is just not for me. I wanted to give them a chance and I remember waiting up to watch them on SNL. So I've tried!!
Got bored 5 songs in
It was better than I expected but I'm not a fan of this band
naja
Frans canadees...
I much prefer Funeral, their previous album. Overall I'd say around 25% of the album I thought was enjoyable, while the rest I thought was a little boring.
Still can't do indie stuff
Rich sound, overproduced and just felt noisier than it needed to be. Nothing too catchy either unfortunately. I wanted to like it, just didn't :(
indifference manifested
Meh.
Mehh
Blank, unemotional and a bit boring for me
Only listened to a few songs. It was not to my taste.
Couldn't finish it, not my cup of tea. Bland indie rock.
Lavish indie rock curtains obscuring an empty room
I know this is a huge album for a lot of people, but it does nothing for me.
It's ok nothing special
-Goth vibes. -Anyone of these songs could have been in the show Wednesday for the Dance episode. -Instruments drown out vocals on quite a bit of the songs. -Would not try to listen to this again. -Don’t hate it, just not my type of music.
not great
It was ok, not my favorite
Good album
rock/pop, 2007 -> 2
Esta guay pero no es mi estilo 💀
i like how one of the songs is used in saltburn (great movie). most of the songs were good for their time but not for me
Don’t like his voice. Not then, not now
I’d say I’m a fan of Indie rock so I was excited to get an indie rock album but I gotta say there was nothing memorable about this one. The first half of the album just dragged, and the way they used the organ as a continuous drone in at least half of the tracks really killed even the songs that otherwise wouldn’t have been so bad. Disappointing album.
I was all for this one after the perfectly-executed opening track, but the whole LP gradually became more and more gratuitous as it went on. Arcade Fire has always tended towards the bombastic, and it's clear they hadn't yet learned the tasteful moderation that would see 'The Suburbs' succeed. Way too much choir/organ-infused balladry in the middle that makes the whole album feel a bit bloated - cut the fat and this would be an excellent debut.
It's not that the music isn't good or listenable. It's that it all sounds the exact same. The singer knows exactly three notes and one tone. They use the same bass line and keyboard sound on every track. And the mix is the same on every single song. It's monotonous as hell.
1.81 average per track.
I really liked the Suburbs but this is mostly a miss. Annoying vocals but could be worse for 2007; Inoffensive.
Anyways, here’s wonder wall on a ukulele
i was lukewarm on this release
Parece grandioso demais, tem muita coisa acontecendo, mas ao msm tempo parece que nada se conecta. Ouvi em 3 fones diferentes e nenhum instrumento se destaca. Muito estranho. Hipsters se dando mais importância do que merecem.
Not bad, a little try hard
Not really for me. Big Springsteen vibes if you're into that
