Reviews (page 5 of 8)
listened to this album a few times and i still dont know what to make of it. rating: ⭐⭐⭐ [61/100]
This wasn't bad but I have a really hard time believing this is one of the 1001 albums you must hear before you die... To me this is album is the epitome of a CD you had in your car in the 2000s where it would autoplay on your commute and you were like "oh this is solid!" but you never gave it any thought past that. Driving background fodder. Coldplay vibes too
Ok budget Coldplay lets go. Words into There Goes The Fear is really weird but I don't hate it. Satellites is a nice song. Yea a budget coldplay album
A couple of decent songs - especially like "There Goes the Fear. The rest were unobtrusive. 3/5
It was fine.
Good background music for a department store.
I have their first album, but this is the first time hearing this second one. Maybe it's familiarity bias, but I prefer their first. It's good, but hasn't really gripped me. Just some straight up indie-rock from the early aughts. The sales success of this album seems to have been on the back of the prior more than on the quality of this specific release.
Pretty nifty when they're going for a more artsy, atmospheric sound, but it loses me a bit when they're doing that mellow, early-2000's post-britpop thing. If their melodic talents had matched their knacks for setting up these spacious, building songs, this might've been a real knock-out.
This started off really nice but by the end felt pretty grating.
No idea how I missed this album, but these guys are good. I feel like they'd benefit from having one more guitar on most of their tracks.
Very reminiscent of Cold Play, but with 7 less Grammy’s
Has its moments
I always thought I hated Coldplay, but this Coldplay imitation makes me appreciate them a little more and see how their talent for melody differentiates them. I actually probably like this band’s sound more than I like Coldplay’s, while also docking it points for being clearly less original and interesting than Coldplay. I’m all fucked up. This album doesn’t suck but also doesn’t do much else. 2.5 but rounding up to 3 because I’d never heard of them and there’s a little novelty there
I didnt get any traction this album until track 6 (N.Y. - and it was my favorite song). This band feels mine a strange middle ground between U2 and some pop rock in the 00s (Coldplay - listen to Pounding and get back to me) Not a fan, but I didnt hate it. 2.5 stars and rounding up
This was good, it was fine. I enjoyed the album throughout, a bit long but overall fine.
听惯了酷玩,听不来这玩意了
Besides the hits, forgettable. Like a dad band version of oasis. Maybe walked so coldplay could run? Run far away. 2.5/5. Caught by the River is fun.
This has some great sounds, is quite pleasant to listen to and is good background working music. But the songs themselves are a bit boring. Nice but boring. Best songs: There goes the fear M62 Song Pounding
Very interesting and unique, the blending of genres make this a very interesting album. Not the biggest fan of the production, but it works on songs like "M62 song" that really feells sad and happy at the same time.
Interesante sonido, mas le falta algo para considerarlo más destacable, creo que tengo que escucharlo más
Another of those albums that loads of my friends loved and I just didn’t get - it’s alright and there goes the fear is a cracker of a song bit it never quite reaches the greatness of that tune. It’s a solid 2.5 out of 5 but I can’t give half points.
They gave AI 1,000 generic indie albums from the early 2000s and said, add some occasional synth for a little extra spice once a track - this is the shit it came up with. It's just generic as it comes. It's not that I don't think there isn't any merit to it, but I'm just really bored listening to it.
Decent
Introspective low mood walking music. Reminiscent of M83 but feeling down instead of up
For those not aware, Doves is a progressive pop-rock band from the early 2000s that also got categorized as Britpop in the vocal cadence. I'm sure their style sounds like a sell for some people, but after listening to their second album The Last Broadcast, I'm not sure it's for me. This is a generally solid album where the combination of hazy blur of guitars and neat bass interplay goes down smoothly, making for an overall agreeable sound. The problem comes when there aren't a lot of tracks here that have a distinct hook or melody to keep in memory as these lads tend to get lost in the haze. Aside from the singles, the nasally sung "Words", and the mild bombast of electric guitars and orchestral accompaniment on "N.Y.", there isn't much else to remember here. At least compared to their contemporaries, Coldplay had the hooks, and Muse had the wild creativity. The Last Broadcast is a fine album to play in the background but it doesn't rise above that observation. It's cool that Doves is still active with their sixth studio album coming out later this year, and they certainly have an audience for it. Just don't count me amongst those ranks.
If your album is going to be this long, it should be better. 2.5
It was OK. Some songs were good, some kinda boring.
Parts of Coldplay, Radiohead and Britpop. Nothing really memorable but at least it’s not terrible.
What can I say about this? Interresting at times but on the whole not interresting enough.
Enjoyable, replacement-level indie rock but There Goes The Fear was very good.
An album that of its time and moment in music- decent, though!
So this is so people who are embarrassed to like Coldplay can still listen to Coldplay? Cool!
Much echo and reverb, pleasant vibe. Just nice to listen to
it was all right. kinda cute at times I replayed the "Where We're Calling From --> N.Y." combo so many times. That first song and the transition into the second one was heavenly
3.2 2x
I liked this a reasonable amount but it didn't grab me in quite the same way as Lost Souls did.
Never heard of this band before. The cover art had me thinking it would be either some synth thing, or metal/hardcore. In theory this should definitely be a sound for me, but I have a bit of a hard time being too excited. 'Caught By The River' was my favourite song on this record by far, and the other hits in 'There Goes The Fear', and 'Pounding' were alright too I guess. For some reason it just doesn't hit home completely. I think I might have to give it another swing sometime, but also kind of feel not to at the same time.
coldplay
It’s okay. Mostly mediocre with some unexpected elements - kind of psychedelic. Really enjoyed M62 song. 2.5
generic at times but better than i was expecting! 3.5
Up beat and hopeful brit pop. Kinda cool, kinda generic too. The song "there goes the fear" is an iconic early 2000's alternative anthem. I've heard it many a time since its realease and I've always wondered who penned it. Doves, here in the flesh. I seem commentary comparing them to Coldplay, I agree but subject matter of the Coldplay songs are much more tender and sensitive where as these guys, Doves are pretty unique in their own way. That of course beings said its not bad music.
The first track wasn’t the best while the others were decent due to the first track it’s a 3 and the rest being alright as well
Pretty meh sounding generic britpop. Particularly boring and forgetful music.
Really enjoying this one. It is subtle but engaging. Great upbeat music to accompany soft vocals
It seemed short, even though it wasn't.
Now I know where various sitcoms and ads during the 2000 got their music from! Fairly lack lustre stuff, another one for the why is this on this list pile 2.5*
It was ok.
Not a band I ever fell in love with, but a band I had some of my best ever times to. I don’t think I ever saw them live. Listening back now they sound surprisingly baggy & lead singer like Tim Burgess. Doves are like a funky better Elbow. It’s brilliant to hear this again. ‘There Goes The Fear’ I played on repeat when drunk dancing with Australian & Scottish friends, happy days. I just love the break down & amazing build back up. I can’t explain why I don’t love this band more, especially after their reinvention from the amazing Sub Sub. (Check out ‘Space Face’ quality rave dance music) Possibly can sound a bit middle of the road & bland, lack of edge ? M62 song is a timeless classic, will always live with me this song, I love the fact it’s named after a northern motorway. As the LP goes on it does turn Elbow-esque too sincere for me. Grey dull afternoon vibes makes sense they are from the north west. Yes by the end of this I know why I never fell in love with them, Sulphur Man for example is so bland, a shit B side at best.
This feels more like an early 90s pop-rock band than an early 2000s band. It's like Oasis-lite. This reminds me of something I can't place, something much later. They sound like a band Zach Braff would feature in one of his films. M62 Song sounds like Guster's Satellite. This is not bad, but it isn't a standout either. There's a song called Satellites on this album! Friday's Dust is bad. The Sulphur Man is cool, good use of the glockenspiel . I have never heard of this band so it's hard to know what the hit off this album was, or if there even was one. This isn't a terrible album, but I am glad it's over.
Well-made pop music with enough originality and variety to keep me interested.
Deutsche Coldplay, zweite Hälfte ist deutlich besser als die erste. Manches klingt schön nostalgisch
Для меня из одной песочницы с Coldplay
Not my thing.
Not bad but not amazing. Standout songs: There goes the fear The Sulphur man
I liked the beginning of the album a lot more than the end where it felt a bit more ethereal and experimental. I think towards the middle and end it became pretty generic soft rock -would probably have given it a 2.5 if there were decimals. Really great album name.
As many have commented, the Coldplay vibes here are clear; on some of these tracks I could've been tricked into believing it was them. It's enjoyable but probably wouldn't outrank any actual 2000s Coldplay album for me.
this was fun - i'm natively a fan of the kinda dreamy feel, and this has plenty of that. overall, this was just a fun album. doesn't feel like it's trying to be more than that - maybe it is and i just missed it, but it's decidedly both fun and easy.
Not my thing, but pretty good overall. Satellites hit me hard for some reason. I liked it overall. 3.5/5
What I heard was OK
Bit of a yawner. early 2000s alt rock that's a bit soft.
Enjoyed the vibe, but I couldn't name any particular song that stood out to me.
This is....fine... i guess. Kinda bland and inoffensive. I don't hate it but I don't really like it either. 2.5/5
Every now and then a Doves album really delivers for me. It's not every song, but then there's a sort of build up to a moment and then everything comes together. This is kind of like that.
Kashmir, Tim Christensen, Robbie Williams. = Ultra solid 3er
Decent. I would listen to it again. 2.5 stars
Favorite Track: Friday’s Dust
3/5
Very 2000s indie. Lots of reverb and shimmery sounds. Nothing really stands out.
This one is going to take a few more listens before I land on how I really feel about it. I’ve enjoyed listening to it and will add it to my library, but I don’t think it will get too much play. Not sure yet though, it feels like it might grow on me. Highlights: Words, N.Y., Pounding, Caught By the River.
Mixed album. I liked the melancholic but upbeat vibe to the album. I also liked how they used noise to convey the radio/broadcast theme. The songs were a mixed bag for me. Some of them good, some were a bit annoying, and I wanted the interludes to be full songs because they sounded cool. Standouts: There Goes The Fear, N.Y., and Pounding.
A kinda Brit poppy indie rockish thing with some spacey influences. Feels in the same trajectory of earlyish Coldplay but a little trippier (maybe I’ll even give Radiohead in their more exploratory efforts), maybe with some Blur mixed in. Lots of atmosphere, reverb, and some psychedelic sounds mixed in over fairly simple but catchy guitar riffs and poppy vocal melodies. Decent listen but didn’t really hook me other than a few standout tracks (Words, N.Y., Caught By The River).
Album 513 of 1001 Doves - The Last Broadcast Rating : 3 / 5 Kind of a poor man's Coldplay. Also brought to mind Oasis and even a little Green Day, in a spot or two. A nice listen but doesn't really leave me looking for more from them.
There's a lot of intricacy to the instrumentation in some of these, and I really really enjoyed some of the vocal work--particularly in the latter half. Feel like this one lends itself well to late night listening. Not too many highs or lows for me, just an okay listening experience; might need to try again in the future, but I couldn't make it through a second listen for now. A 2.5/5 that I'll round to a 3, nothing offensive but nothing special.
not great but not bad. like a slightly more interesting coldplay at times
OK, more early aughts brit rock. It is nicely melodic with more instrumentation than electo synth, and feels like springtime, festival, twirling in a field fare. Letting it play while going about my work, I caught myself thinking \"why does Chris Martin's voice sound so weak here?\" then to remember this isn't Coldplay. Overall a very pleasant listen that lands between awful and brilliant... a solid 3.
Nice, solid Counting Crows style stuff. The musicial journey that N.Y. takes is lovely! Some real emotional, broader lyrical stuff here that feels like the kind of lyrics I’d write if I wrote good stuff. Yeah..I’m into this! Gotta hold onto this band!
I enjoyed the first album from Doves and this one moves on slightly from the previous shoe gazey sound with nods to prog alongside some bouncy, radio friendly numbers. The highlight is M62 Song which takes elements of Moonchild by King Crimson layered with traffic noises recorded under a motorway flyover in the middle of the night.
Decent indie rock from the early naughties. It has some dream-pop/shoegazy quality on some songs that makes it a bit more interesting that the average indie rock album from this period.
Very average stuff here, nothing special in my opinion.
Like a not as good version of Coldplay. 2.5
Closing track is excellent. Uses similar chords to the first song which gives it a nice symmetry. I'm not sure this album is a must hear before you die, at times its quite plain, but it's never bad Pounding sounds like a song Coldplay would go on to rip off a thousand times
There is some technical skill here, but if I wanted to listen to Coldplay (which I never do) I'd listen to Coldplay. 2.5/5 -> 3/5
Pleasant jangly guitars, crescendos and wooshy noises. I don't think there's enough here to hate.
Yet another ex-1001 album!™ http://1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie.wikidot.com/album-artists-a-z-ex Doves' debt album Lost Souls is still in the 1001 book, which is probably enough to experience Doves. This album is fine, but it's more of the same.
I tend to like this kind of vibe. And there are a couple of songs I really liked. But it slightly overstates its welcome. Still solid but not great. 3/5
They sound like Coldplay, or does Coldplay sound like them?
it's okay, nothing really stands out, quite low-key
Not my style
Very Coldplay-esque. A couple of songs stood out that I'll save.
post-Oasis? Coldplay-ish? I vaguely remember these guys. I think the only song I recognized was Words. This was wholly unremarkable but I didn't hate it or anything. 2.5, rounding up... but only 'cause I'm nice.
I was looking forward to this album when it popped up. I remember when they released their singles from this album. Sadly, it didnt live up to the hype. There goes the fear, pounding and caught by the river are tremendous but the rest of the album was forgettable.
I was not previously familiar with the artist or album. I like it. It's indie rock with a nice atmospheric backdrop. The songs provide a nice variety of sound. I liked this enough to listen again.
We have Coldplay at home:
Best Song: There Goes The Fear. A nice distillation of that classic, early 00s rock feel. Worst Song: Friday's Dust. I really hoped for less of this kind of forlorn navel-gazing, and more of the fun 90s rock from the beginning of the album. Overall: A bit all over the place, although all distinctly late 90s early 00s (and therefore a bit dated). Truly nothing that stands out though, making its inclusion on this list a bit strange.
Cool British Rock. 3/5
fell asleep while listening i believe, should probably have relistened but ah well 3 for fairness sake
I'm surprised I never heard of these guys, but I guess the "indie" label probably meant more in 2002. Sounds like a Guster / Coldplay hybrid but less catchy. I don't mind it.
New discovery
Found this one to be pretty underwhelming. Not a whole lot to say here unfortunately.
Nothing really stood out to me about this.
Ok. Enjoyed. The music included some channeling of the Edge.
this was a really interesting listen. i really liked the more instrumental first half, and didn't find myself as interested in the second half. that said, i overall enjoyed this sound and could see myself picking it up again. don't think its strong enough for a 4, so it will sit here at a 3.
First few songs sound more modern than they should be. Fizzled after that.
its ight nothing special
Listened to this on the couch after supper, cuddling with the dog while it thunderstormed. That was my setting, and it worked so well with this album. Especially with M62, Where We're Calling From, and Satellites. It was pretty good. Very early aughts lofi indie sound. Would I listen again? Maybe. Good for background chillin. Saw some reviews saying it's a better Coldplay, and I definitely agree. So if I were to get a hankering for this genre, I'd pick them.
I was into this at the time and saw them live around the release of the album, but I can't say it's still capturing my interest - they were a bit more interesting than other Britpop/post-Britpop bands on release as they came from a dance music background (which they played up a bit more live), but relistening in 2024, it leaves me a bit cold - just sounds like Coldplay.
Just because you're first album is great, doesn't mean the second one will be.....so why is it on the list ?
Ihan kohtuullinen nollari-indielevy mut eipä kyllä jää kauheesti mieleenkään. 2.5/5, menköön nyt ylös
This hasn’t held up so well. A couple of bangers but honestly the rest is a bit forgettable. Disappointing relisten. And this was nominated for the Mercury music prize. Oh well
Another band that for some reason I've never heard of that I could like. This is what I'm here for.
Pretty good
Sounds like a even more bland Coldplay
Like this.
3.5+ quite enjoyed
Is it a compliment or is it an insult to say they sound a lot like Coldplay?
Another Brit pop/rock indie band. Musicians were ok but song wise nothing really different from its peers, and the recording suffers from poor production
The music was pleasant, played unobtrusively in the background and was not distracting. But it wasn't particularly impressive either. I probably won't listen to it again so soon. 3/5
Very U2 reminiscent, not bad but not my fave
Meh felt Radiohead adjacent
There are some really cool moments in here that connect with me, but also quite a bit that quickly retreats to the background. Favorite track: There Goes the Fear
Fínt vinnustöff 3.5
Ekki jafngóð og fyrri platan með Doves sem við fengum. Ágætt inn á milli en voða mikið af veikum hlekkjum.
The album is fine. Unremarkable.
Good
More British alternative on this list. Either my algorithm just coincidentally is giving me these, or this writer is really biased in favor of British alternative bands.
The most neutral album I've heard.
This didn't do much for me. Not bad, not terribly interesting either.
Quite downbeat for a weekend. Not unpleasant but I probably wouldn’t listen otherwise. 3*
I almost want to deduct points for a cover this bad. Did someone copy & paste a picture to MS Paint and print it on an HP laserjet? I'm guessing it was a choice to go grainy here because it would be wild to let this pass any other way. ANYWAY This one feels like a bunch of brits got together and said, "You know, OK Computer was great, but didn't get a lot of radio play. Let's just do that again but make 9-5ers happy!" Overall I do like most of the offerings here, I just think it's trying to be everything else that was popular at the time. Coldplay did the whole mass-appeal indie songwriting thing better in my opinion, but I'd revisit this. It feels like a grower, not a shower. Are shower and shower spelled the same?
Totally serviceable British indie rock but not a second of the album sounds unlike the band’s more original, more talented inspirations.
Realmente parece Coldplay, un poco zzz pero lo recomendaría para mindless listening
Bright and encouraging opening with the riff from Words. Similar vibes with There Goes The Fear. Remaining tunes weren’t quite as ear-wormy but it was a decent album altogether.
I enjoyed but I don’t see 1001 here.
Classic masterpiece
2000s indie - nothing exciting
This album was okay. I think if I would have heard it when it came out in the early ‘00’s I would have loved it. Now it just feels too familiar, like reruns of Friends. Pounding is a pretty good song I could return to but nothing else really grabbed me in a way that would draw me back again and again.
Oh yay, another British pop/rock/indie band. (/sarc). This topped the UK charts, and barely cracked the Top 100 in US (#83). I mean, it's ok... but nothing really special. Certainly nothing to separate it from the pack of early 2000's indy stuff. the vocals are OK, a bit low in the mix. Lyrics are OK, nothing special. The music tends towards a little dense, wall-of-guitars kind of feel, which is OK. A couple of the songs are pretty good, none stink. All in all, OK sums it up. 3/5
Really good three for me, enjoyed the chill kind of spacey vibes to each song
This mostly passed me by. I don't miss it.
This would have sounded different from what was coming out at the time but now it sounds banal.
Nothing too remarkable, it was an OK listen.
ne lose, ali dosadno ngl, won't be revisiting
nije me motiviralo da brze ocistim stan
cvrsta trica. Okej mi je, ali dosadnjikavo, mozda jedna dvije pjesme interesantne
This was OK, bordering on good.
this album was so inoffensive i've taken to calling them tepidplay. the songs are all extremely average and abundantly fine. just generic-sounding early 2000s soft pop-rock, destined to be the background music of a grocery store or shopping mall. there's no meat on these bones, but the bones are all anatomically exact. does this make sense the biggest mark against them (other than everything I've written above) is that the songs are all like 1-2 minutes longer than they should be. i mean honestly, the big single, there goes the fear, is just under 7 minutes???? why tho favorites: words, there goes the fear, m62 song, pounding, last broadcast
Ágætis indie. Mun alveg renna henni aftur í gegn.
Olet pimeässä huoneessa jossa ei ole mitään ja haluat pois, mutta et voi tarttua ilmaan. Yrität kammeta tyhjyyttä, mutta se ei pidä sinusta kiinni. Lattia on tahmea etkä pääse pois. Albumi porautuu päähäsi muistijäljeksi. Ihana alku tällä, mutta loppu muistuttaa hetkistä joina halusin pois.
Ehhh... I'm not crazy about the singing, but the instrumentals are fine. I doubt I will remember this album by the end
Other bands/ singers this band sounds like - Richard Ashcroft -Oasis - Leonard Cohen - U2 Every song sort of sounded different, but every song sort of sounded like someone else. It’s not breaking any new ground, but it’s a pleasant enough album. 3.5
Hadn't heard of them, pleasant surprise.
I'm not really impressed, but I’m not disappointed. Had fun and all, but don’t think I’ll be able to recall any of these songs except for vibe a month from now. 3/5
Sounds like what would happen if Oasiis or Coldplay decided to be indie bands. Slightly more likeable, but still kinda “meh.”
I enjoyed A lot of this album without it having a particular song really sticking out to me. It's really good running music due to its pace and beat and just general feel. There's a lot of Coldplay and it's interesting that this early 2000s UK Rock really does have a particular sound to it.
This is a strange album for me since, on one side, it should be perfect for me. It's precisely the type of thing that I usually enjoy. On the other hand, it was okay during my listening session for some reason that cannot be explained. Just ok
Generic. Bah.
I think I prefer Lost Souls but Caught by the River was a bright spot for me.
I liked There Goes The Fear. Some of this sounds sort of like Coldplay (could just be the British lead singer). And I’m not sure if that’s a good or bad thing.
There were interesting textures and production on this album, sometimes crossing into over-production. I thought it was sometimes difficult to tell where one song ends and another begins. I enjoyed the soundscape in general but nothing stood out as particularly catchy or poignant. Enjoyable to listen to, but not very memorable.
Leuk. Crimson king shout out!

I've gotta say Lost Souls is a better Doves record.
Rating: 6/10 Best songs: There goes the fear
favourite song: M62 Song least favourite song: last broadcast was already a big fan of kingdom of rust so had high expectations for this album that werent quite met. all the songs kinda sound the same but thats not too bad since they sound pretty good and the album doesn’t seem to drag despite being nearly an hour long.
An interesting album that resembles what might happen if Coldplay and a Radiohead joined forces. Worthy of possible future listens.
I likes this better than thier first record. Side A is listenable
For being a dreaded post-2000 british alt-rock album this is quite decent! Found myself enjoying a fair few of the songs. Strong 3
HL: "N.Y.", "Satellites", “There Goes the Fear” The intro and album cover combined suggest a different, scarier album than what it actually is: nothing too out of line with other British 2000s indie, e.g. The Verve and Coldplay. Although Doves seems to have more of a flair for musical experimentation than their contemporaries, those diversions are mostly contained either when a song is ending or about to begin. someday, I’ll relisten to this on the highway late at night and probably love it a lot more. Special shoutout to the woodwinds in “The Sulphur Man” & “Friday’s Dust”
Rating: 6/10 Decent album overall. Pleasant to listen to but pretty forgettable. I liked almost all of the songs but nothing stood out too much, wish they took a lot more risks since I like their sound a lot. Favorite songs: Words, N.Y.. Worst song: The Sulphur Man.
Rock indie
Oh - I know these guys. I listened to their other albums Lost Souls and Some Cities back in 2005. I thought they were good, while I searched the British music press for bands as good as Radiohead or Coldplay. These guys were held up along with the Magic Numbers and Badly Drawn Boy as the new, mature, pop-rock for a new millenium. But listening to this now, as the middle album, I'm not sure. I might have listened to this before, but put it aside? It feels muddy and indistinct and not as iconic as the album directly before or after. It's not bad, just unremarkable.
quit good
Reminds me of early Coldplay. I like it. Nothing super game changing though.
Nothing wrong with it but not very gripping either.
It was decent, nothing really stood out to me though it felt a bit vanilla
An alright record with some good vibes and a good overall sound. Reminds me of a band that was local to me in the same time called In-Flight Safety. Also I dig the big jangly guitar backdrop, nice instrumental harmonies, Oasis vibe with that Supergrass stomp, a bit of Coldplay, that sort of 'americana' pop vocal harmony style... interesting stuff. But not 'amazing' enough to warrant a 4 unfortunately haha.
At times I thought this would end up being better than it actually was, but it was still fine
A couple of songs I’ve heard before but nothing groundbreaking
Kinda nice.
Like a warm, deep bath. But I wanted a cold shower. The band that Coldplay could have been.
The Last Broadcast thrilled at the time - Pounding and There Goes the Fear especially grand and grandiose, channeling transcendent dance style epic sound scapes with an indie rock sensibility - but the album has lost a bit of steam and momentum over time.
Pretty chill, reminds me of when when I was younger listening to indie bands
Meh
Ce n'était pas mauvais, un style assez intéressant, mais en même temps j'avais de la misère à voir en quoi ça se démarquait. C'était un peu unidimensionel. Il y a une bonne musicalité, mais manque un peu de mordant pour em garder captivé. 6/10
Eh it was alright.
Nett, aber mehr nicht. Kann aber verstehen, warum Menschen das Album fühlen.
Top 3 Songs: 1 - There Goes the Fear (3) 2 - Satellites (7) 3 - Pounding (9)
J'entends du coldplay par bout. Sinon ça sonne assez pop de ces années là mais l'écoute a été bonne. Meilleur que beaucoup d'album dans ce style 3.80
Classic British New wave meets shoe gamer. Solid stuff.
Pretty good album that was very easy to listen to. Has some very good guitar at points. During some times in the album I was thinking of giving it a 4, but then other points were quite boring and kind of all blended together. So this is a high 3. I did really like the last song Caught By the River that had pretty high energy and was probably the best song on the album.
This one started out pretty strong for me. Definitely kept my attention for most of it but ultimately just blended into one giant song. Not bad by any stretch but just longer than it needed to be. I think that was the problem I had with the last Doves album too. Swayed back and forth between 2-4 so I'm going a solid 3 here.
I thought it was pretty ok, just not my thing for some reason I could not pin down.
It's good Brit Indie rock, but that's about it.
A really good listen. 3+ stars
Pretty good.
Felt like this is what Coldplay wishes it sounded like. 3/5 Would maybe listen again
I'm honestly not sure period I need to reless into this album period I think I would have loved them in high school.
Meh
yeah nice enough music, would put them above Coldplay who they remind me of but wouldn't seek out more of their music 2.8
I was apparently not into indie anymore by 2002. A bit of the drone of Embrace and Elbow. Recognised a couple of tracks. Fine but not sure what sets it apart.
Used to like the Doves a lot, maybe too much. Although the tuneage is still great, the vocalist grates my ears these days.
63/100
I have heard their later stuff which I preferred. Quite an uneventful album and I’m surprised it’s on the list.
Interesting listen, there were some elements I enjoyed - the stadium-style depth of the music for instance - but others that I didn't get so on board with
Very Manchester, very early 2000s.
ну есть пара бенгеров + довольно качественно слеплено. За пару песен, которые добавил (Last Broadcast и N.Y.) добью до 3
3/5. While many people criticize the author of 1001 albums to listen to before you die about the amount of random British albums included in the text; I felt that this album was actually fun and well done. That’s just me.
Love it... I had heard one song from this band before (their hit "there goes the Fear"). But this album was a great discovery. I loved The Sulphur Man, Their use of atmospheric sounds at the start of the songs makes it a cinematic experience. 3 stars :D
honest pop
Couldn’t quite get to a 4 on this one, but I did really enjoy it and lingered on it. Sounds on the surface very similar to Coldplay, but after a few listens I hear more depth in the music and lyrics than I’ve ever heard from those soulless bastards. There is a gospel feel on some songs, but then others merge electronic elements effortlessly. The singles that effectively bookend the album are both outstanding.
Pretty good, but pretty forgetable.
This is exactly what I imagine a Coldplay b-side disc would sound like. It's all Coldplay track but missing that something extra that set them apart in those early albums. This isn't bad. A little boring. But fine.
Yet another album where many individual pieces sound more appealing than the album as a whole. Not at all bad, but not knocking your socks off good either.
It's not necessarily forgetful but it didn't really move me in any direction, technically good but I doubt I'll spin it again
Some nice tunes, but did not listen to them all
вроде хороший но уже мало верю грустным англичанам. надо потом ещё на нормальных колонках попробовать
Meh
kinda cool tbh!
Sounds like made for TV music
When this first started I was intrigued. The more it went on, the less intrigued I was. Was never bad but never hit that next level. I’m the end was just ok. Might listen again though to see if I just wasn’t paying close enough attention.
Too pleasant. Very well orchestrated and well-articulated themes, thought provoking. But I didn't FEEL anything.
Beaucoup plus soft, ça change le mood du métal. Rien d'absolument wow, mais j'aime le vibe calme et tranquille.
I was happily surprised by this. Felt like old Coldplay. Will definitely revisit this album
Saved from two stars by the OC vibes I think...
Yeah it was nice
Some songs sounded like Coldplay, some songs sounded a bit more unique Unexpected “Moondchild” cover Solid indie alt 2000s rock 3.5
Never heard this band before. Enjoyed it
Fine indie rock album, not my favorite in the world.
This album was more of the more confusing choices on this list for me, not questioning why it was included just more the sound and personality of the album more than anything. I say this because the sound of this album feels like something I should like but yet it also feels incredibly stagnant. Don’t get me wrong songs like ‘There Goes The Fear’ and ‘N.Y.’ do sound great but when there’s an album full of these sort of songs I think the instrumental choices get a bit bland. What I mean is the continuous pounding of the same instruments to create the instrumentals gets so dull, this is seen on the song ‘Pounding’, excuse the pun, where the guitar in the back gets so incredibly monotonous it puts me off the track entirely. So really this album was alright but I’m disappointed in the lack of variety at times, there wasn’t much that was distinct for each song and it made the album seem way longer than it actually was.
Good, inoffensive, background music. But not groundbreaking or anything.
I knew a bunch of songs by ear but not by name, it's good in places but lots of it remind me of a Jimmy Eat World record but without the up tempo rockier bits, so I found it lacking there.
This is really solid early 2000s indie, without ever really hitting a mega high point - There Goes The Fear is as close as it gets, but that'd be nothing more than a strong album track from the real stars of the era. 3/5, I liked it having not heard it before but it's not outstanding. Minus points for a having a song named after a motorway.
Doves are pretty much the epitome of 'wouldn't turn it off, wouldn't seek it out either' for me. They're completely fine, and good at what they do, which is to be a bit like Ride crossed with U2. Tbf it does contain one bona fide banger in Pounding, which I've only just found out the name of, this is the first time I've not heard it passively. Fun to learn they recorded the King Crimson cover version under the actual flyover 5 minutes walk from where I used to live in Northenden. Surely it's the golf course end one and not the wythenshawe end, I can't imagine that ever being quiet enough. Oh yeah, the loud one is under the Parkway not the M60.
Pleasantly surprised with this. Way better than I anticipated. My memory of them was that they were just another one of them early-mid 00s indie bands with haircuts and tight clothes that all merge into one. Only knew There Goes The Fear which I really like, mainly from 500 days of Summer. But these dont deserve that category, theres a lot more to them. Friday’s Dust reminded me a lot of every Nu Metal band of that era’s ‘slow sensitive’ song they all seemed to do. Looking at you Staind / Stone Sour / Puddle of Mud. But aye, good this, probably wouldn’t return to it as a whole, but will definitely return to the tracks I liked. 3.75.
Enjoyed it more than I expected to, the acoustic tracks in particular were great and the guy has a pretty good voice. In general I find Doves a bit bland and I've glossed over them in the past but they on this showing they probably deserve more of a chance. Will listen again.
pretty name for a band. IDK if ill like it. Its very 90s. but could be worse, definitely, although it didn't make me feel anything I bet if I listened to it enough I would.
Hmm... I quite enjoyed the use of ornate instrumentation, but this is an album I probably need to try to find time to listen to again at some point to really decide whether I like it or not.
I liked this whole album, it was nice and relaxing in an indie way
Very Coldplay-esque. The music/singing is all fine but nothing memorable that makes me understand why it's on this list. This one is barely eeking out 3 stars just because it doesn't deserve a two since it was a pleasant listen at the very least.
I don't mind long songs, but jesus some of these songs drag on for so long.
"Mom can we have Radiohead", "No sweetie, we have Radiohead at home: Radiohead at home: Doves I don't know why, but this album just reminds me of better bands. Yeah this album has some good songs, but it mainly just reminds me of better bands. Some of the songs I get a weird Coldplay vibe but idk if thats me. I liked the album alot until about the halfway point where a lot of the songs became one note songs. Most Memorable Songs: M62 Song, There goes the Fear
Not great, some interesting moments.
There's a couple pretty good songs here and there, but for the most part this is just like. The dictionary definition of indie rock without much personality.
I used to like this album a lot. It has its moments.
This had some moments but was pretty boring. 6/10
hmmm quite boring but not so bad
What is Doves? In 1991, the Williams brothers and one Jimi Goodwin started a bank in the UK known as Sub Sub. They would make dance music. Then, in 1996, their studio burned down. LIKE A PHOENIX RISING FROM THE ASHES, DOVES. They're a rock band now. The Last Broadcast is their second album. Being an alt/indie rock band from the UK in the early 2000's, it certainly slots in with the post-britpop bands of the day. Coldplay, Snow Patrol, Travis, etc. It's fairly well-done and even ambitious at parts. I do think it can be over-indulgent at times but the overall product is one worth praise.
Interesting use of sounds o.o Pretty depressing tunes
Like U2 meets Coldplay with a dash of M83
Reminds me of the OC
What an interesting time for music due to digital downloads, legal or not, and the power for word of mouth to really propel bands to reach listeners. Not to mention certain TV shows spotlighting such bands. (cough cough, OC, cough) Although a lot of this kind of music sound the same IMO, I credit Doves to bring some kind of segue way from the 90s to the 2000s in their tunes. Enjoyed this one!
Nearly a 4 for me I think because you can feel the concept is well delivered but it is just a bit too boring
This was decent. I'm not familiar with Doves, though I swear I've heard "Here Comes the Fear" before (but I'm unsure where). They're a fairly good early '00s indie rock band, judging on this release. I'd probably give this 3.5 if half stars were permitted.
I'm a big fan of the debut Lost Souls which has a woozy hypnotic feel. This follow up has some great moments but some of the slower songs feel a little tired in comparison. 3
Very middle of the road album, a few pieces grabbed my interest but most of it was just background noise.
There's something here, I think, but I have no urge to come back to any of these songs. Probably good if you like indie rock, but I've never been too crazy about indie music from the early 2000's. Saw a lot of comparisons to Coldplay, but I'm not very experienced with Coldplay, so. I like the Coldplay songs I have heard more than this album though. It felt like it dragged on, but that feeling might have been more because of me than the music. My favourite song was M62 Song.
The back half was better than the front. There were a few songs I liked but overall it seemed kinda generic. Nothing stood out as particularly amazing or groundbreaking.
Gave me proto arcade fire vibes. I like it, but there wasn’t much particularly great about it. Good focus music. 6/10
more britpop kill me, better than average
3/5 I think I like Britpop. It all starts to sound a little same samey but it was giving me Coldplay vibes. It had good elements and was well made. I was a little annoyed that when I did zoom in and pay attention, the lyrics were total bullshit jibberish. Lmfao 😆 Oh well. Can't win them all.
Really enjoyed parts of this but on the whole I found it average. Nothing annoying or repetitive but nothing that was stand out perfection. I like this genre but not sure this is the best example of it. On to the next one...
I really liked this album! It felt like something influenced by Coldplay (or maybe they influenced Coldplay?) with a dreamy like sound, but some moments of orchestral greatness. Add in a touch of lovely harmonies, and I would put this as one of my fave albums listened to so far. Doves is a British indie rock band, and you can tell they spent a lot of time crafting their sound and especially lyrically, wanting to make consistently good music. Favorite Track: There Goes the Fear
Some interesting ideas. But the sings could stand a little editing and the vocals don’t always mesh.
Incredibly mid album. Not offensive but not memorable either, the one exception being Friday's Dust which is entirely too good for this meh album.
Way too long but not bad. There Goes The Fear was good. I do think there are far too many of these kinds of similar sounding albums though. High 3.
S'alright

Another one I've never listened to but know lots of people who've loved it. Britpop's never been a huge go-to for me, so it makes sense as to why I missed it. I enjoyed the first half much more than I expected - "M62 Song" reminded me massively of King Crimson's "Moonchild" but then things kinda flagged in the back half for me. I would definitely consider giving it another chance sometime.
Interesting but not intense enough to my taste. A little boring. Sorry about this.
I liked this more than I thought I would.
Doves are decent. I feel other albums are better than this one, but this one has some enjoyable (but maybe less memorable) moments. 3/5
This was just okay. A little dull.
The Last Broadcast — like many a pop-rock album swarming the airwaves in the naughts — is a majorly bland, cookie cutter collection of overly saccharine songs masquerading as something deeper. don’t get me wrong, none of the songs are bad: “There Goes the Fear” is a show-stopping seven minute long beast born of the most innovative country-tinged rock compositions. “Pounding” also feels like the kind of song that informed a generation of faux rock bands (the Coldplays and Imagine Dragons of the world). but beyond those high points (and trust, they are deliriously high), The Last Broadcast is burdened with terribly trite lyrics that border on infantile. Doves’ brand of sunshine positivity doesn’t land as often as it should, and each song overstays its welcome for minutes longer than they ever should. even at just 53 minutes, the album feels sluggish; but even in all that needless fluff, Doves still manages to produce some gems that rise above their indulgences. this here is an album that’s been done many times better before, and just as much as after.
This kind of reminded me of Oasis? Am I crazy?
3.3 - These guys sound like the quintessential opening band at a concert. The music is decidedly inoffensive, with mealy-mouthed songwriting that waivers between hope and melancholy. I picture myself sitting in a half-filled stadium, letting these songs wash over me as I look at my phone and wait for my buddy to return with our beers. Standout: "Friday's Dust"
I liked this album. Varied instrumentation and energy. Did quite catch my attention enough for 4 stars though
Fine but definitely not exceptional and another waste of a slot on a list like this. It sounds like Coldplay but it’s not Coldplay. Again, with so many rap, r&b, and country albums missing this shouldn’t be here.
Quite an average album for me, listened to it a couple of times - I wouldn't turn it off it it came on again in rotation but nothing to really engage me.
Good shit, fun 2000s pop rock
I’m not crazy about this album. There were some high points scattered throughout, like the intro and out to of NY or the lonely sounding M62 Song, but the album as a whole is a weak concept album about the end of the world with a stale early 2000s alt rock sound. Favorite track - M62 Song Least favorite track - Pounding
Can't really complain about the album. It's a sweet listen with a lot of nice production and quality hooks but that's about it for me. I don't love the arrangements and a lot of the songs were pretty forgettable for me. I did really like Words and Caught by the River for basically the same reason, that being they both pull of the concept and aesthetic of the album the best, and had a really grand production that caught my attention.
Decent album. I listened through it 1.5 times. Heavier songs like N.Y. I really enjoyed, but there were other tracks that felt like early Coldplay - which is fine, but it did feel a little disjointed. Overall 3/5.
Overall it was enjoyable, nothing spectacular. It reminded me of early Coldplay. Which, after seeing when it was released makes sense. If this received radio play in the US at the time, it might have been popular.
Not bad.
I remember the excitement after hearing 'There Goes The Fear' for the first time and expecting this album to be amazing. Some other nice moments aside, it wasn't that good, and my opinion hasn't changed much over the intervening years.
Meh
This was quite good. Nicely textured sound that elegantly blends a pop sensibility with some moodiness and depth. I enjoyed it. Fave Songs: N.Y., Satellites, M62 Song, Last Broadcast, There Goes the Fear, Caught by the River
I respect what they're going for, but it falls flat for me. Kind of a post-britpop 00s brainchild that was all the rage.
Does the world need a *second* Coldplay, even if this one is a little more imaginative in its atmospheric arrangements? Isn't *one* Coldplay more than enough already? Just like Chris Martin, and minus two or three good moments, the singer from this band is often stuck in a maudlin mode through the course of this record. Some of the vocal lines are a little dull, almost none of them are catchy, and the performance is a little lackluster as well. And why, oh why, are the songs so f*cking long? You could cut most of them in half, and it would basically be the same thing. How about a little self-editing, Doves? Some of the build-ups justify the length used for certain tunes, true (case in point: "There Goes the Fear" and its nicely surprising samba outro, expertly carried out without you even noticing where the thing was actually going for all along--clap clap clap, a very skilled move here). But not *all* the tracks deserve to last for six minutes or so, c'mon! Admittedly, this album is still a little better than the pack of post-brit-pop LPs this list subjects us to on a regular basis (by the borderline-boring Elbow, for instance, or by the criminally overrated Wild Beasts). Yet by 2002, Radiohead had already shown a way out of that innocuous-indie-by-the-numbers-sort of record, and this through bolder electronic experimentation and the use of more extreme, abrasive dynamics--both during the songwriting process and the recording of the songs. Unfortunately, not many acts had the skills or the ressources to follow the Oxford quintet. What we got instead from Britain during the naughts was a bunch of Coldplays, for better or, quite often, for worse (heavy sigh). And maybe it would be better to forget most of them twenty years later, and leave room for truly *exciting* or *groundbreaking* music, at least. Number of albums left to review: 720 Number of albums from the list I find relevant enough to be mandatory listens: 140 Albums from the list I *might* include in mine later on: 68 Albums from the list I will certainly *not* include in mine (many others are more important): 77 (including this one) PS: Listening to Doves' first album right now, *Lost Souls*. The arrangements are even more impressive and pleasurable on this one, but the "songs" still sound like overlong jams or dirges as well, just as in "The Last Broadcast". Doves' musicians are good I'm not arguing about that. But as "songwriters", they're not exactly among the top-tier of those tunesmiths everyone remembers about today. And in a genre like the one practised by this band, it is a flaw that is quite unforgiving, especially for a list of 1001 "essential" albums. Sorry, Dove fans. *One* exception, though: "Catch the Sun". Is it because there was the word "catch" in the title that Doves suddenly remembered they could also try to be... catchy?
A fair 3
I had fun with this album. I found myself singing along by the end of some of the songs. Had a really productive morning with this in the background. My mind drifted and came back to ocean waves or guitar that was a little too loud but quickly fell back into a poppy melody. After a day or two I can’t remember a single song but would listen again.
Competent
