Reviews (page 4 of 8)
This album started off fairly promising, but it fell off into generic territory pretty quickly. There are still some great and interesting elements, but it's not much to write home about. Definitely reminded me of Coldplay towards the end. Favorite track: "Words"
Doves veers between inspired English indie rock band and slightly more interesting Coldplay. Songs like "Satellites" and "Last Broadcast" actually remind me of what Coldplay was doing in 2016, so in ways, this album was way head of its time. These are big, anthemic songs written for stadium tours, which on some level receives a big eye-roll from me, but listening closely reveals some decent songwriting with interesting instrumental and production choices that keep the record feeling ambitious. Highlights: "L.A.", "The Sulphur Man"
"Words" is kinda corny and repetitive. It feels like a words of affirmation type of thing. "There goes the fear" is familiar, I like it. Is it in 500 days of summer maybe? I just checked and it actually is. I'm so locked. They're very classic 2010s and also are literally just Coldplay
Some of the songs I liked, and some sounded discordant. Kind of felt like two disagreeing genres.
This was not objectionable.
Felt like a pretty run of the mill new millennium British pop rock album. I did like There Goes the Fear and Caught By the River. A few interesting production touches were too few and far between. Vocals were average. Nothing here that will draw me back, but decent all the way through. Quintessential 3/5.
Solid indie rock, which is kept interesting by changes in tone and pace. Good musicianship and it’s very well-produced.
Musically quite varied across the album and mostly pretty good. Vocals were OK but a little on the bland/droning style for me, but not awful.
Clearly, Doves was one of the swarm of bands trying to capitalize on the popularity of Radiohead by returning to the more radio-friendly sounds of The Bends. But unlike acts like Coldplay, which ultimately provided enough of a departure to achieve some form of mass appeal, this album feels somewhat stuck in a sort of purgatory of moderation. Doves included some experimental elements throughout the album but don't commit to them. As a result, the album doesn't step out from the shadow of the Britpop movement, or achieve anything near as interesting musically as Radiohead. This impression is reinforced by the generic lyrics that run through most (but not all) of the songs. At the same time, this isn't an album that wholeheartedly embraces the pop airwaves. Coming in at almost 7 minutes long, the lead single from the album features a structure and some of those interesting sonic experiments that you don't typically hear on the radio. Meanwhile, the intro to Friday's Dust sounds like it could have been an outtake from Kid A. So, what is this, all things considered? I can't avoid the feeling that this is the sort of album that results when a band and a record label are trying to hit it big but don't quite have their formula nailed down yet. I can imagine the thought process - people love Radiohead, but the new albums at the time (OK Computer, Kid A) are offputting for anyone who doesn't want to listen more than twice through. So they split the difference between Radiohead and Britpop, and here we have it. Ultimately, this was a perfectly fine album. There's nothing offensive here, nothing that would make me turn it off. But by the end, it was also pretty clear that Doves had nothing much to say.
Highlights: Pounding and There Goes The Fear
enjoyable
None of this stands up to the brilliance of There Goes The Fear.
Not bad, this was a band that passed me by despite being around a lot in my youth. FIFA main menu vibes, not a bad thing. Enjoyed it a fair bit but would need to listen more to get into the songs
Groupe inconnu. =>3/5
Not a group I'm familiar with I quite liked some of the tracks. Some of the vocals reminded of the group Elbow, whom I quite like, a bit more keyboards and synth than the aforementioned, but again I don't mind that. I wasn't blown away, but I didn't mind it.
Not bad
Just ok
Nice sound but lacking in oomph.
A decent album, enjoyable enough to listen to, never offended my ears. There were occasional moments that I found interesting, but on the whole, it sounded like run-of-the-mill Coldplay-adjacent pop. I'm not convinced I needed to hear it before I die, but I didn't mind listening to it.
I had no idea what to expect from this album and the doves and I enjoyed for the most part. Some tracks were a bit slower with dragged vocals which wasn't my favourites but all in all. I enjoyed
Bit elbow for me tbh
A lovely album that's perfectly listenable. I might go back to listen to it again at some point.
Sounding like a more disparaged early-Coldplay, The Last Broadcast is heavily atmospheric with some dreamy and otherworldly production, but with vocals about as interesting as a house salad with no dressing, and not a whole ton of songs that stick out as being exceptional, this whole thing feels like early-aughts bookstore wallpaper. It's not unpleasant, just doesn't really leave an impression. I liked "Words" and "There Goes The Fear" however.
I don't really have anything to say. S'ok. Glimmers of more than ok at times. Promising opening. Have listened a few times. It's perfectly acceptable example of the genre. 3 Total number tracks: 12 Fave Track: 6: N.Y Others: 26/02/26
I think I might recognize the song "There Goes the Fear" by the title alone, but otherwise, I don't think I know this artist at all. This is neither great nor terrible. I can definitely tolerate it, but I don't feel compelled to listen to it again. The few songs where Jimi Goodwin is not singing lead make it apparent why he _is_ the lead singer.
Pleasant I guess but extremely mediocre.
Rating: 5/10 I'm comprising a list of mid in the 1001 Albums book and it's all 2000's rock Mercury Prize nominees. My beating of a dead horse aside, it's fine, it's not bad. It's got a sleepy and dreamy night time atmosphere and feels very closely aligned with Coldplay's music when they were developing at the exact same time. Doves feels distinctly different enough here with more of an indie rock sound and a touch of psychedelia. It has a bit of a warmth and coldness to it. All around this feels like a commercialized radio friendly version of lots of better dream pop and indie that was made before the turn of the century. I definitely like N.Y. the most and really wasn't into The Sulpher Man. Crazy how this hit #1 on the UK Chart. Times really were different even 25 years ago when rock music could still chart.
Reminds me of U2 but maybe 10% more interesting to listen to. The whole album had a few cool moments where songs really meshed well or included interesting ideas, but it was pretty chill and vanilla otherwise 5.8/10
Apparently this album was a smash hit in the UK. Upon its release, it shot to # 1 on the UK charts but once again I just don’t see it (…or hear it may be a better way to phrase it). It’s not bad music, but if I was in my car and any of this came on the radio, I would change the station to find something better. At times, the rock beat really comes through and the song is enjoyable, but that flashes away quickly and the rest of song is numbing. This might also be the first album from this list of 1001 to include an oboe in its repertoire, so bonus points for that variety.
If Coldplay’s Chris Martin kidnapped Bono and then became the frontman for U2, this is the kind of hyper-pop, not quite rock you might get. Doves sound like a less melodic Coldplay or U2 without grit, nether of which is a good thing. There are worse things on this list but this doesn’t stand out in any way.
One cracker, rest mediocre
Tried a few times but couldn't really get into it
I liked this well enough.
This wasn’t groundbreaking and honestly it sounded a lot like the pre-landfill indie bands that were influencing all that crap that would shortly come after, BUT, it’s a decent alt rock album. The downhill slide of radio rock in to the unlistenable pretentious horseshit of the late 2000’s in to the 2010’s was sort of beginning here, but it hasn’t lost all of the charm of the better 90s stuff yet. This is all nicely performed and arranged and has some genuinely good songs on it. “Words” was my favorite of it, which is a shame because it’s the first track. Nothing else got added to any playlists but neither did I want to stop listening. You can hear the old man Crimson and Genesis influences (M62 Song, most obviously), but they don’t particularly add anything super compelling to it. Just the fact that there are enough interesting chord progressions and time signature changes is a lot for the genre at the time. The middle of the album becomes overly melancholy and basic, and that really brings it down. Through 30+ minutes of the runtime they sound like bargain bin Blur or worse. It sort of returns by the end but nothing matches up to the opening tracks. Shame.
This is the second of the 2 Doves' albums on this list that I have had, both of which have shown up in the last month. I didn't like this one quite as much as Lost Souls, as though they had clearly matured a bit as a band (e.g. more lyrics), I didn't think their sound on this was as great as on their debut. The short story is that this album started and ended very well, but waned quite a bit in between. When Words first came on, it reminded me of the Futures album by Jimmy Eat World, which is a record I love. There was almost an atmospheric quality to this track. In short, Words was a winner for me. There Goes The Fear followed, which evidently is the most popular song on this album if the Apple Music dot means anything. It was just ok to me though. Pretty straightforward song, nothing terribly interesting though. M62 Song was another step in the wrong direction. Stripped down is not something this band does well, mainly because the singer doesn't have a great voice. Meanwhile, Where We're Calling From is just filler, no need to comment. N.Y. is a sweeping track, which was cool. Nothing amazing though. The back half of this album was better, at least to my ear. Satellites might have ran a bit long, but that says more about the beginning of the song than the end, as I thought it built well. Friday's Dust appealed in part because of the symphonic nature, including the clarinet (which my daughter plays), which is incredibly atypical to hear on a rock album. Enjoyed this, especially through headphones. Pounding was a good driving rock song. It is let down by the lead singer's voice, which is a touch weak on a track that is otherwise solid. The title track didn't do much for me, but it wasn't bad. The chorus was at least interesting. Meanwhile, The Sulphur Man is easily the worst song on the back side of this album. A bit of a letdown given everything else that preceded it. The album closes well though with Caught By the River, which might be my favorite track on this record. While I've felt the lead's voice has held certain songs back on this album, I thought his vocals fit great on this one. For the first time, I kind of heard almost a Coldplay level of potential in them. In short, if you've made it this far into the album (and this review), at least they finally paid it off with something that was excellent. All in all, not an amazing album. However, as I said in my review of Lost Souls, given how many shitty no-name English bands are unnecessarily on this countdown, Doves are miles better and are at least worth exploring.
Decent Brit rock album that mixes alternative with some subtle electronics to create a more atmospheric and ambient backdrop. Highly produced and cinematic, it’s a very polished commercial album designed to appeal to the masses. Overall, it was an enjoyable listen and slightly better than average. I probably won’t go out of my way to listen to it again unless I want something easygoing and non-offensive to play with a group of people.
Some hits but definitely more misses...
actually not that bad for the most part, although a fair few songs feel like a "how similar can i sound to chris martin" contest
first half is interesting, second half is too much coldplay for a non coldplay enjoyer
This started strong and was more varied / interesting than I was expecting, but the second half becomes a bit more sedate and boring, but it's not all bad.
"Words" and "NY" are pretty sweet songs. The rest of the album is largely fine. Some of the vocals and instrumental choices kind of bog it down a little bit for me. Particularly on "There Goes The Fear" and "M62 Song". On the whole, fine but pretty unmemorable.
There's some quality here, but some songs are forgettable. Three is the perfect rating. Liked Songs Added: Words Caught By The River
enjoyed this, some good songs on it
#847. I am a cabbie, and I mostly listen to these at work in the car. I say that not because I think that anyone that might possibly be reading this would give a shit, but because even though I though this was generic music flavored music, the smelly hippie chick that listened to the second half of this album with me was really digging it. 3/5: smelly hippie chick approved
Strong 3, especially with there goes the fear. Bit long and a lot of the songs get lost in the production
Didn't think I knew this band, but eventually recognized there goes the fear. Rest of album reminded me of other indi bands that sound somewhat familiar. It didn't feel like 53 minutes had passed, I don't remember much of the words or beats, but I liked the vibe and wasn't ready for it to end.
Never heard of this group. The album is ok. The upbeat songs are much more appealing to me. The mellow or slower songs were not enjoyable. I also want a bit of whatever the person who made their music videos had while making them because they are a ride.
I was going to write that this is the first of two Doves albums for me in this collection, only to belatedly realize that I'd already heard their debut album nearly 400 albums earlier. Given the fine-but-largely-forgettable nature of this album, I'm not at all surprised I'd completely forgotten "Lost Souls", and my notes for that latter album pretty much confirm the same impression for both albums. I like it that "Words" got--and still gets--lots of airtime for Manchester FC games, and I'm impressed that they chose to work in an adaptation/cover of King Crimson's "Moonchild" in "M62 song". I'm also happy to see/hear that my impression of the first album--trying to be the "soundtrack for some sort of indie film involving long car rides and heavy conversations in coffehouses and large parks at night"--largely carried over to "The Last Broadcast", albeit with a better focus on discrete songs.
A little shoe gaze-y: it plays and I don't really track much but every now and then I hear a line or a phrasing I like. Maybe if the vocals were more forward in the mix it would stick more with me? I did like the song "Words" though.
Like Coldplay, only without the whiny vocals. Adequate millennial rock.
Touches of psychedelia and prog. There’s both Floydian influences and a nod to Hawkwind in some of the sounds and let’s not overlook the track M62 which has more than a passing resemblance to Moon Child by King Crimson. Quite enjoyed this
First time to hear this group. Pleasant nd non-descriptive. Not sure where it lands...
That semi-ambient rock/alternative sound that reminds me a little of Coldplay. Pretty chill album, listenable, but didn't do much for me.
It's true that they sound like Coldplay, but definitely a blander version of them.
Not that this was bad, but I also don't know what's great about. Only here because its British. The most 3 star album of all time.
With all of these multi-album artists appearing on this list, the question arises of which among them is the least deserving of having multiple albums on the list. I can't say that Doves are at the very bottom of that list, but they're not high on the priority chart in the slightest. Why are they on here twice?! They're not a band bad, don't get me wrong. Both The Last Broadcast and Lost Souls are solid albums, but I can not imagine any good justification for them being on here twice! Maybe you just had to be there in early 2000s Britain, I don't know. I don't have a ton to say. It's passable early 2000s indie rock. Not bad at all, but not impressive either. I don't know why, but I'm kind of annoyed by the vocals on this one. No clear reason why, I'm just not a fan. I didn't realize this with Lost Souls, but these guys really like make songs that are longer than average, don't they? Not crazy long songs or anything, but there are multiple 5-6 minute songs on both albums. I don't really think it works with the band's style. Maybe if they were more experimental it would appeal to me more. The writing isn't bad. There are some solid musical moments. The album's a little repetitive though. This album isn't offensive in the slightest, but there's nothing here that I really love. It's good, but not great. 3/5.
nice to listen to, but complexity to keep interest; my type of music but more listens required.
Reminds me of Coldplay
words hit and i ascended very pretty the decisions in some moments are a bit rough for me don't really appreciate the sudden jumps of energy between songs ok the plot is found again later lost it again kind of confused about the overall impression of the album
I enjoyed Lost Souls more than this one. I feel like this one got caught up in some sort of Coldplay/Travis type of song mood and structure. The songs are pretty dreary and they tend to feel too long. You can hear what the Doves are doing on other early 2000's post-Coldplay albums that are better than this one. Enjoyed Lost Souls but this one is just a drag and the material just isn't as strong here as it was on their debut album. I do not see this one as vital and would instead check out the debut album. My favorite tracks: Words There Goes the Fear N.Y. Pounding Caught by the River
There Goes the Fear N.Y. Pounding Caught by the River
I could literally cut and paste a review of one of the (way too many) other 90's - 10's Brit pop indie bands in this project. What I cannot fathom is why the editors - who must clearly love this type of music - would want to make a list of 1,001 albums to listen to before you die. Do they think they have great taste? Do they think that if everyone gave this drivel a chance, it would be great? I seriously don't understand the motivation here. Influence 1. Hits 2. Quality 4. Intangibles 3. It's not offensive 3.
I bought this when it came out, listened to it once, and filed it away. I like it better now. It's very pleasant. Nothing wrong with it at all. But there isn't a melody, a lyric or an instrumental passage that stays with me.
Again, I have no idea why Doves have two albums on this list, let alone one. It's fairly generic indie from the early 00s. Some occasional half decent tunes, but it is infuriating seeing this group who made no real cultural impact on the UK music scene have two entries here. As I said before, nowhere near as much fun as the drugs they're named after. Best Tracks: There Goes The Fear; Pounding; Caught By The River
Many people comparing Doves to Coldplay (both positively and negatively) which feels fair, I suppose. Not sure how to evaluate this one, as I listened to it once and thought "mid as hell," but listened again later and enjoyed it much more. Going to go with 3 stars for now, but might give this a bump later on upon a re-listen.
So harmless I didn't even realize when it ended, tbh. Might listen to it again at some point to see if I missed anything.
5.5/10
Words // There Goes The Fear // N.Y. //
Bara mjög allt í lagi
Bara solid 2000s rokk. Ekkert spes en alls ekki lélegt heldur.
Solid 00s indie album. Questionable choice of opening track, but the King Crimson interpolation (cover?) and There Goes the fear keep attention. Great run on tracks to end. Have always liked this album, but in the company of others on this list, it’s hard to argue that it is more than 3 stats
A bit same same for my taste but the good songs are great
This is sort of dreamy space indie rock. Reminds me of Slowdive, Mercury Rev or Cocteau Twins. Pretty cool but kinda boring. Was big for a second in indie rock circles. Let’s say three stars.
Enjoyable
Pretty good.
New band for me. Ok
Вполне приятный альбомчик
ok
3,5
It was just alright imo, I prefer lost souls!
Me liky aber isch mer au ned mega mega viel blibe. Mit meh konzentration hets es vlt uf es 4i gschafft
Zmli normals album. Hed mi weder berüehrt na gstresst. 3 last broadstars
Dream pop was better before this album and dream pop was better after. Not sure what this adds.
It's fine.
- Apesar de serem de Manchester, tem bastante influência do Trip Hop de Bristol e do indie rock de Brighton. Tem muito brit pop tbm. - Mais pro final eu achei as músicas meio parecidas com o que conheço de música inglesa desse período.
Solid
Coldplay but marginally more listenable. I have some amount of nostalgia for this "sound" so I will graciously give it a 3 >:)
Decent britpop album that feels kind of sluggish
Songs can be a bit long yet soothing.
Could listen to this again. Nothing extreme going on but good sounds.
Wish there was half points for marking, would’ve got a 2.5
= the Beatles
feels like the songs i would hear on older fifa games. 3.5
06/12/2025 It was very bland and quite boring. Spotify listeners: 641.2k
A sordid tale, where the first few songs made me believe something cool could happen, and I was getting into it, until it turn in typical 2000 mush by the end. A lazy album in a way, not all bad, but yeah not needed to be heard
When I started listening to the first song, I thought, "Oh no" another group which I'm not going to like; however, the second song, "Words" was better and I liked the beat. I liked the way that "M62 Song" started. Worst song: "N.Y.". Best song is "Friday's Dust" as the music and lyrics really captured my imagination. After listening to "Pounding" I could understand why it chartered in the top 30. On the whole I enjoyed listening to this album in spite of its unusual first song.
That was a nice relaxing album. Good vibes. I sat down this morning and did a terrible job at Wordle, but playing wordle, sipping coffee, and listening to The Doves was a serene experience I would absolutely recommend to start your day. 3/5
My first thought when I saw The Last Broadcast by Doves was that it had to be older than 2002. I remember hearing tracks from this album back in the going-out days! This is a solid indie record, full of atmosphere and promise, but it often feels like it’s building towards something it never quite reaches. The Last Broadcast has so much potential, yet it lacks a true standout hit to anchor it, and it dips in quality at points with a few tracks that don’t add much to the overall experience. That said, when this album gets it right, it really gets it right. Favourite track: There are some great indie moments here, especially “There Goes the Fear,” “Words,” and the brilliant “Pounding.” Least favourite track: The album drags in places, particularly with “Friday’s Dust” and “The Last Broadcast,” and the intro didn’t feel necessary. Album artwork: A very cool album cover, striking and memorable.
It was ok, nothing really stood out a great to me.
Pop rock sympa avec des titres un peu plus calme
C'est plutôt pas mal, ça s'écoute mais j'ai quand même trouvé ça basique et un peu oubliable. 3/5
cool sound design can't save this from being pretty uninteresting overall
Fine to good. Nothing super remarkable. Some songs way too long without doing anything interesting. I did like Words, Satellites, and Caught By The River best.
As I learned with Lost Souls, Doves has a very unique, well-produced sound that's just not quite for me. I thought this one would be different because it starts off with a VERY strong couple of tracks, but they lose me once they're back to their regularly scheduled indiepop programming. Standouts: Words • There Goes The Fear • Pounding
Sure
I thought it was nice. Good album with that late 90s early 2000s vibes. I still remembered their names today so that's bonus points.
Nicht besonders interessant. Verträumt harmonischer Rock ohne viel Spielerei, dadurch tendenziell etwas langweilig, aber vom grundsätzlichen Klang her sehr angenehm.
Every song on this album sounds like it plays at the end of a movie about a white dad finding meaning after a mid life crisis. That being said I was vibing
Decent I guess
Typical early 2000s indie rock.
nice enough
I quite enjoyed this album as a whole! My favorite songs on the album would have to be M62, with its atmospheric quality and NY with its crashing guitars and psychedelic vibe.
This one isn't in the 2018 copy I have. I get it.
Aggressively fine. Nothing too good or too bad, just fine.
3.5
Lots of truly creative sounds on this album. I wouldn't say that I love it, but it's quite respectable. Comparing it to Coldplay would not be unfair--their sound is same flavor of bland. With some more edge to the lyrics, the Doves could have been just as huge.
It was alright but nothing really stood out here for me.
There was nothing bad about this, but it was kind of forgettable and nothing stood out about it.
Pretty well produced and played. Not my style of music, but they are talented and it was nice to listen to.
No offence to The Doves. They're a good indie band that I don't mind listening to occasionally. But I really cannot think of any reason for them to have a place on the list, let alone two. I enjoy listening to it again but there are loads of more deserving albums out there.
An ok album that I do not remember much of the day after. Background music for my email reading after work yesterday. 🤷♀️
Just a non-descript British alt-rock album from the Aughts. Was an inoffensive listen that I rather liked when I was paying attention but that was hard since it didn't really grab me.
I was on the same flight as Doves to the US once. Their manager said they were super pumped because it was the first time they'd ever flown business. Nice guys. However, given the other music from that era, I can't really say why this made the list. It's nice, it's well made etc but it doesn't really ignite anything in me. Apart from "There Goes the Fear". Which is an absolutely glorious slice of jangly rock.
File under: Coldplay
Brit pop. Reminded me of coldplay
A solid 3, maybe a 4. Overall pretty good!
I think they like Radiohead... I feel this album teased the potential to be something really cool, but they just don't quiiiite hit the mark
Like Coldplay if it was good. I don't think it's good, but if Coldplay was good, this is what it would be.
I like Doves, but this isn't their best album. That said, nothing wrong here. Good, solid, 6Music indie fodder. It's on my shelves. Heard before ✅️ Listened this time ✅️ Revisit ✅️ ★★★☆☆ (6/10)
Good stuff here. Some songs felt a bit long. Caught By the River is a beautiful finale. 3.4 outta 5
Very, very feathery 3 stars. It might have been on the higher end of 3 stars if not for the final four songs, which I found to all be pretty over-earnest and lousy. Up until then, I like the skeletons of most of these tracks fine enough, but a) almost every single one of them lasts at least a minute too long and b) the overall sound only does so much for me. I don't see how this record is essential in the least and, after hearing two albums by Doves, I haven't heard anything to convince me that they are interesting or remarkable in any way. 3/5
It was fine. Not a standout album from that era tho…
Man. I remember this group. Loved them back then. Great to hear them again. 3.5.
Different.
Inoffensive rock. Like none of this was bad, but also nothing stood out or was memorable. It’s an album that just went from start to finish and will never be thought of again. 2.5 / 5
some of the most straight down the middle 00's less-alt rock, nothing to complain about really
Not bad
Soft 90’s rock
The Coldplay comparisons are funny. I would say they're a little bit more experimental tho... but they don't ever quite grab me. I was wishing for better
Very easy listening. A couple of tracks sounded familiar, but only vaguely. I'd have no concerns if someone put this album on in my presence, but I wouldn't ever think to seek it out for a re-listen. That's a standard 3 star rating for me.
I liked this quite a bit better than Lost Souls, but it still lost me near the end. I really enjoyed the first few songs, specifically "Words" and "There Goes The Fear" but as the album goes on, the songs start to sound the same and are somewhat boring. Honestly I should have given Lost Souls a lower rating, but it was early in my album journey, and it doesn't feel important enough to change. That being said, The Last Broadcast is also getting a 3 from me, and a middling 3 at that, but Lost Souls' 3 stars is more like a 2. I'll probably forget about this album before long, but it was nice enough to listen to once.
We had Doves' first album already, and as I noted on those listening notes, their style is right up my alley. It gives a little bit of The Antlers vibes, just less electronic. Ethereal and floaty. I did eventually do a re-listen of the first album, mostly because I noted, I thought it would be a great listen for driving on the freeway, alone, at night. But I was wrong about that, and I ended up walking away from that thinking the album wasn't as good as I first thought it was. And I think that kind of revealed the man behind the curtain, so to speak. I still really like the style, but I don't think it's that great. It's an album that I would say that I enjoy, despite its mediocrity. Because of that, it ends up with an alright rating from me, but if it were, let's say, 80s New Wave, I'd probably be giving it a 1/5. Favorite Song(s): N.Y., Caught by the River
Didn’t finish. I need to listen to the rest of it. I can’t review.
Indie rock with a britpop influence. It was okay.
It’s a little bit lightweight, definitely on the pop side of indie. I was leaning towards rounding it up to four stars, but then I realized I listened to this album several times in the past 24 hours and still can’t remember a single tune. Pleasant listen, could use more bite, forgettable.
Don’t really know what to say about this one. It does what it does pretty well, but it doesn’t do much. Although I can’t say this album is generic, it didn’t stand out to me in any way. Still enjoyed it, though. 7/10
Decent
Indie rock with a pop sensibility. Nice use of guitar delay and reverb to create ambient soundscapes. Notable songs include Words, There Goes The Fear, N.Y., Last Broadcast. Easy to get lost to while listening.
I listened to this album 3 years ago. I really liked it. Especially NY. When this came up here I thought: I know this album! But I didn't recognise a single song. The songs all have a pleasant atmosphere but are generic. It lacks good songwriting.
Not terrible
I know someone whose favourite band is Doves... I respect them, and at their best I can almost see why someone might rate them that highly, but they're just not a top-tier, two-albums-on-the-generator kind of band, for me. There Goes The Fear and Pounding are great singles, and the band do a pretty good job at maintaining a lush, atmospheric vibe throughout the album, but the magic isn't there consistently. 3 / 3.5
Overall, The Last Broadcast is a fine listen, but it’s not even their best album, and nothing on it stands out as particularly great. It’s solid, but ultimately unremarkable.
I wasn't sure which band Doves reminded me of, then I got to Satellite and got punched in the face with Coldplay. 2.5/5
Quite good - in parts. There are attempts to do different things, but none of the actual songs ends up being very original, and at least four of them sound just like Coldplay (not a compliment). My interest was piqued by the instrumental Where We're Calling From leading into NY, but then it all went a bit meh again. Accomplished, with some interesting instrumental twiddles (mainly outros and intros) but didn't grab me overall. As I lived in the area for a long time, I can safely say it's all a bit... Wilmslow. (Shout out for their hit as Sub Sub, though - I hadn't made that connection.)
New to me. Album improved as it progressed. Some interesting instrumentation and chord progressions for indie rock. Quite a bit better than Coldplay, though nothing earth shattering here.
3.5
I had heard one other song by Doves before this. Alright, bright sounding.
Okay. Not bad
What a weird album. They went through so many different genres and then just ended on a very competent Coldplay album? It was wild. Interesting but not necessarily great? I don't know how to take it.
IT’S NOTHING LIKE COLDPLAY! 😤 with that out of the way; i rly love Words, and Caught By the River, the latter has been an iconic song to me for many many years. the album in general is kind of a same sound which makes the 53 mins too long. it’s hitting me nicely today tho, i struggled the first time so just goes to show some albums needs to be tried at different times. fave songs; words satellite friday’s dust last broadcast caught by the river
This is a pretty one, though by the end it might feel like too much of the same, it was a nice early-Coldplay-esque 53 minutes to me
solid
Generic early-2000s radio music. Inoffensive and perhaps a little bland for 90% of the time. What is that techno section though?
Vokalerne var lidt so-so men musikken var superfed.
Not game changing or anything I had to hear before I died, but just generally enjoyable and nice.
Decent. A bit too Radiohead-lite at times (and not reminiscent of the best Radiohead albums at that). Though as someone pointed out they also sound like Coldplay at other points. (Then again, Coldplay are often said to have been Radiohead-lite in their earlier years, so it's an almost redundant point I guess.)
Me: mom can we Coldplay? Mom: we have Coldplay at home The Coldplay at home:
Did listen to this album at the time, and loved "There goes the fear", have not listened in years. Singles are still great, the rest not quite on this listen. 3.5 rounded down Heard before? The singles Owned: No. 8/1001, 8/34 (23%) Will I get? No Recommend: Maybe
I’m an unabashed Britpop fan, and I had three Doves albums I hadn’t listened to in decades bouncing around in my collection, so it was with some curiosity this one popped up on the listen list. Doves follow in the late Britpop style that was inspired by early Radiohead and have a sound that is reminiscent of Coldplay and to a slightly lesser extent Muse. The neutered, safe, adult contemporary stylings that are irritating in Coldplay are present here, but to a much lesser degree. The record is far too sterile to inspire much passion, but it is a solid ‘down the fairway’ mix of pop and light art rock. If you like Coldplay, you will probably love this.
Nothing really caught me and not really my genre, but made for unobjectionable background music.
Really good. 3.5
The Last Broadcast is atmospheric, polished, and full of big, swelling choruses that are clearly reaching for stadiums. It is all very pleasant to listen to, but it is also hard to shake the feeling that you are basically hearing Coldplay’s slightly moodier cousin. Tracks like “There Goes the Fear” and “Caught by the River” have strong melodies and some nice emotional lift, yet they stay firmly in that safe, middle-of-the-road zone where nothing ever feels too risky. There are moments where the production shines and the band hints at something darker or more ambitious, but for the most part it blends into the crowd of early-2000s Britrock. It is polished, it is listenable, and it goes down easy, but it rarely leaves a lasting mark. The Last Broadcast works fine if you want something in that vein, but if you are already familiar with Coldplay, you will probably feel like you have been here before.
DNF
Like Coldplay, but less shit.
This week has just been one mid album after another.
i knew that this kind of music would be controversial is this over the top? are they trying too hard? in my opinion they tried to combine the music which they'd like to play with the music which was heard back then it's a pity cause i'd like to hear their 'real' music the sulphur man reminds me of coldplay
Good background music
Not bad; better than Coldplay
nice enough album. too many dull sections to consider it good. heavily has the sleek veneer of genericism, which cheapens the britpop-esque sound they were going for. if this album had a little bit more bite, i'd probably bump it up a star in my esteem.
i like this more than i thought i would.
Solid britpop.
The music is enjoyable enough, though its close resemblance of other similar-yet-better bands makes for a predictably frustrating listening experience. Definitely reminds me of Coldplay's early material – at least, the instrumental does. The vocals have a croakier and more retro/classic-rock (almost punk) quality to them than Chris Martin's, especially when they're harmonising in the first few songs. The first full-length track, Words, has a full and densely packed texture with a bright, optimistic feel. Reminds me of an alternate-reality No Surprises if the lyrics were more positive and encouraging. Really feel-good and a solid way to begin the album. (Later edit: never mind, this song is arguably just as depressing as No Surprises. So are the others. Whoops.) The subtle riff in There Goes The Fear is taken directly from Bowie's Sound and Vision. But I'll let it slide, because the song is pretty good. What's less forgivable is the very next track, M62 Song, being a shameless cover of King Crimson's Moonchild but with a seemingly inconspicuous title to hide it. (Again, the song is really strong, which I hate.) N.Y. stands out as one of the most engaging tracks on the record, for its energetic drumming, alt-rock-style guitar picking, and slow, dreamy coda section. Also, man, that bass part! Shame that it's followed by one of the weakest tracks, Satellites, which drags on for nearly 7 minutes and has nary a hook to speak of. The Sulphur Man is similarly dull but has a more reasonable duration. Three tracks on here – namely the three singles Pounding, Caught By The River, and There Goes The Fear – obviously pander to a wider pop-loving audience with Coldplay-tinted glasses. They don't take many musical risks in those three, unfortunately. 3/5 Key tracks: Words, There Goes The Fear, N.Y.
Enjoyable, but I probably will not listen to it again.
This “we got Coldplay at home” ass album.
Du rock anglais indé typique du début des années 2000. Tu remplaces le nom par Coldplay ou Radiohead, t'y vois que du feu : donc c'est éthéré et un peu chiant.
I saw a review that said early Coldplay, I think they’re exactly right
More generic British alt rock from the late 90s/early 2000s. I don’t understand this lists obsession with the most mid British bands, like do I really need to listen to this before I die? Having said that, this is one of the better ones I’ve had but it was still nothing special. Reminiscent of early Coldplay, specifically reminding me of Yellow, it’s not terrible but it’s not amazing.
This is another early 2000s Britpop band that is in the list because the author likes them. Good, but not anything that is unique. To my ear sounds a lot like Coldplay from the same time. In fact, in an alternate reality I could easily see Doves being the hugely famous mega band instead. 3⭐️
Sounds quite a bit like Coldplay. Easy to listen to. Doesn't leave a deep mark. 3.3
It’s pleasant music but like someone else said, it seems like they’re always so close to doing something interesting and then they don’t.
Great start to the album but kind of falls off a cliff after that
Album je v pohodě, klidné pomalé. Můj oblíbený žánr, nejspíše zkusím i jiná alba od této kapely.
Fun songs. Interesting sounds, but didn't hold my attention.
1) Intro 2) Words - featured in Geek Charming (Sarah Hyland), haters gonna hate, let em. 3) There Goes the Fear - makes me feel free, on a road trip, overcoming darkness and finding hope and seeing with a sense of yearn and relief 4) M62 Song - MOONSHINE!!!! WAITING FOR MY LOVE ..... yearning.... The lyrics tell a story of someone traveling to meet another person, only to find that the other person has also traveled to meet them, resulting in a somewhat futile but ultimately meaningful journey 5) Where we're calling from - Heavenly, cosmological (music only) 6) N.Y. - Young and reckless and rebellious in New Yorkkk 7) Satellites - Start like Queen's We will Rock You, fight at home and you go out for a drive 8)Friday's Dust - Dejection at workplace, crushed dreams and hopes 9) Pounding - YOLO, Carpe Diem, escape from life misfortunes. Aa chal ke tujhe mai leke chalu 10) Last Broadcast - Breakup. relationship hurt 11) The Sulphur Man - Climax start, Pills or something Idk, weird, a reflection of the band's feelings of guilt, shame, and depression 12) Caught By the River - surrender!!! acceptance and melancholy with an undercurrent of hope
This sounds like an album from a random NZ indie band from the late 90s. But I guess Doves isn't too far removed from that. I didn't think I'd heard the Doves before, but a) they are the ones who did "Black and White Town" (not on this album) and b) I guess "Caught By the River" was a minor hit because I'd definitely heard it before, but in a passive way.
Interesting but not good but not bad either. Id say a solid 2.5 maybe but Im gonna round up cause it just feels like something is there still I could be missing.
Like a lot of music from this era, EVERYTHING IS SO LOUD. The sound is crisp & clean, but every instrument is RIGHT THERE in my ears. It's the era that subtelty missed. Old man yells at cloud aside, the music isn't bad. The album has some highs & lows, but overall didn't particularly grip me.
Found this one pretty enjoyable. Didn't blow my mind or anything, but was nice to listen to.
I went into it expecting very little and was surprised that I actually didn't mind it. Decent background music.
Just not my thing. Kinda dreamy buttrock
Brit pop with some emo vibes.
Ei tää nyt jotenkin lähtenyt.
No tämä oli joku köyhän miehen coldplay ja ymmärrän miksi ne toiset ovat rikkaita
Ei tämä huono ollut.
Almost forgot this was on. Very forgettable but not bad, per se.
It was good. Reminded me of Coldplay at times
Yup, coldplay
The early 2000's radio friendly "indie rock" bands really kind of all blur together for me; this album has that exact sound. Apparently it's "post Britpop". Late in the album, starting with Friday's Dust, there are a few songs that did manage to get my attention by breaking from the Coldplay/Snow Patrol/Keane sound and doing some more interesting things, so I wouldn't turn those tracks off, but I don't think this is an album I'll be seeking out anytime soon. 2.5/5
British Indie Rock band Doves ... Nah. Indie MOR bland. Like Coldplay's less exciting brother. Nothing on the CD stuck me as remotely inteesting.
m62 song
Pre-listening thoughts: ugh god their last album was a BORE im not excited for this at all Post/during listening thoughts: It’s like if elbow and Coldplay had a baby. And when they were raising this baby and singing lullabies to it in the crib, it would cry vehemently when a song would end so elbow and Coldplay would drag out the song for way too long. So when this baby grew up to be their own musician, they had no idea a normal song wasn’t supposed to go on that long. 6/10 DID I NEED TO HEAR THIS BEFORE I DIE: nope Fav tracks: now these I actually really messed with. Words and Pounding. Great songs. Least fav tracks: I didn’t outright dislike any of it but just like their last one it was mush
I liked this at first, but the singer got drony. I'd pick songs off it to listen to, but not the whole album.
This wasn’t bad but not something I’ll listen to again
Started off strong, but kind of petered out in the second half
I liked how this album started; the transitions were good and the songs maintain a characteristic sound. But I found it kinda repetitive after listening to half of the songs. This album had good songs nonetheless, although it was not my style.
CAN YOU JUST STOP HATING BRITPOP. 3.5/5
Nothing new.
Two Doves albums in a week was not on my bingo card. They’re clearly pretty good but just not the kind of band I’m gonna get out of bed for. Best song: Caught by the River
There is something in it Some alternative in this rock
Almost something kind of good, but never quite gets there. Not the worst of the myriad mediocre britpop albums, at least? M62 Song, The Last Broadcast 2.5-3
Enjoyable big city soundtrack with all the dark shadows.
Listenable
drei minus there goes the fear caught by the river
Nice build art rock , enjoyed listening to it. Fades into the background for me as it lacks on novelty
Mellow rock. Easy listening
Good to listen to this as a first album, reminds me how patient I used to be with songs, a lot of slow build up and eventual release into soaring choruses here, a good post Brit-pop example.
Surprised me. Didn't recognize any tracks though
Eh
Doves came up on a playlist yesterday and I caught myself thinking 'how many entries do Doves have on the 1,001 Albums list?' I had a feeling the first album was on the list but wasn't moo sure about this one. Turns out it was on the list but was one of the albums which was subsequently cut. I saw them live as a support act and like the singles but it's not really intrigued me enough to check their discography. They are like a greyer Elbow, another Manchester band with more interesting lyrics and a stronger emotional weight, who deserve more records on this list than this lot.
I was surprised to see this here. Its right in my wheel house but with the exception of a couple of decent singles, its not a stand out. I enjoyed revisiting it, but if this was significant it wouldnt be such a blast from the past
Not bad. Liked it.
It's like The Wonder Stuff tried to make a pretty decent Coldplay album
This one was a surprise- I never heard of Doves before. I actually enjoyed it- it had some good moments and a nice indie style.
A top album by an underrated band. They are a bit of an outlier when it comes to my regular go to artists. At least it's not Sub Sub par.
Listened on 5/26/25 3/5 Favorite songs: Caught by the river Great background music but none of the songs really stood out to me
Best: Caught By The River, Words, There Goes The Fear
This is Britpop with a post-hangover glow. Clean drums, chiming guitars, a light fog of melancholy, but nothing particularly sharp. Feels like it came from the same Coldplay/Catherine Wheel universe, just without a breakout moment. You can tell they were going for cinematic, but it never quite lifts off. Comfortable. Not inspiring. You’ll forget what you were listening to, but you’ll enjoy it while it plays. Spins: 2 Playlist Additions: - There Goes The Fear - M62 Song - Pounding
I like the music but the way the tracks are laid out doesn't allow one to establish a mood.
This was shortlisted for the Mercury Prize. It seems like there is a huge overlap between albums shortlisted for the Mercury Prize and albums on this list. Probably just a coincidence right? Definitely not a British bias. This album is fine. Second album from this band on this list, and the first one was fine too. Essential? I think not.
5/10 I can't imagine a band that takes less chances. It's like listening to paste without the fun of eating it. 5-15-2025
3.5 stars. Quite enjoyable, nice big sound.
its ight. most of the songs are good but the majority sound the same. no new territory being explored or anything. not unenjoyable tho its a pretty nice album just basic for my current tastes. that sounds pretentious as hell but whatever its true.
Decent
Pretty good 00's chilled indie but nothing memorable other than the couple of singles they released
I was pleasantly surprised by this album. At times they did a U2 vibe, other times they hit a nice progressive note (their reimagining of King Crimson's "Moonchild" was a particularly nice moment).
Liked a few songs
Interesting but I probably won’t return
A very early 2000's album. Budget Coldplay, which isnt necessarily a bad thing. 3/5
Coldplay if it was a shoegaze band
Meh
I wasn’t really interested at the beginning but I slowly started to vibe with it. I found some songs interesting but a lot of it was identical to Coldplay and not even the good Coldplay.
500 days of summer core
3.5 stars really
Kinda sounds like a knockoff mashup of so many pop artists from the early 2000s
3.5
One of the better post-britpop albums I have heard. Quite enjoyable, but uneven. 3.5 stars
I can't say I really get the appeal of Doves. They're not terrible, and pretty inoffensive overall. But as a result, they're very boring. They're offensive in their inoffensiveness. Most of the time, they just kind of come across like a dollar store Coldplay. Very light (much like a dove) 3 stars.
Started OK but then seemed to coast
Someone said this was like bland old Coldplay and I agree. Vocals were aight, instrumentals were good but there was too much going on for their own good. See the potential though
I'm actually very into this!
Really was enjoying the first half of the album but then find myself skipping through the songs, bored. Each song feels like it could be cut by at least a minute with little to no loss. It is a shame as a lot of the songs use unique sounds that tickle my brain.
Kind if made me think of Coldplay at times. Deserves another listen as I was a bit distracted. 3.5 Stars
Clearly very effort and thought went went into this very great and thoughtful testament to mediocrity 6/10 Unoriginal and bland
I wasn't able to listen to all of it, but what I heard, I did like!
I listened to about half of it. It’s fine. Nicely played UK pop rock. Boring mostly, it made little or no impression on me. I listened to a bit of their 2025 record after this where they sound more grizzled and tempered by the woes of the world- and it’s an improvement.
The very epicentre of good-enough indie It sounds great, his vocals aren’t really up to it It’s very fine A high 3 but never touching a 4
Not your everyday record, but a good chunk of songs in it. There is one hit but the rest are not very memorable, still good to listen to, and to appreciate it better, requires a few listens.
Mira, There Goes The Fear es una de mis favoritas de la vida, pero incluso con esa opinión puedo decir que este disco no necesita estar aquí. Y además, la portada es fea.
Not a bad album. 'Pounding' and 'Caught by the River' sound a lot like early Coldplay.
Very generic? But fine. Just anonymous
Nice Britpop
I like when the list introduces me to albums like this. It's nothing mind blowing, but I enjoyed this album. It's definitely got an early Coldplay feel to it, but a bit more experimental.
I am the exact same person after listening to this album that I was before listening to this album.
Started off strong instrumentally - some cool ideas with the intros and outros - but by the middle/end of the album, their sound felt more or less like a clone of early Coldplay. And mind you, IMO early Coldplay is best Coldplay... but it's still a bit too similar for my tastes. But overall, not a bad listen, there's some pleasant ideas scattered about.
Some nice tunes
- Temu Coldplay. Which sounds ruder than I intend, especially because I do not love Coldplay. - Nothing here is bad; in fact, I find a lot of the diverse instrumentation legitimately interesting. But these tracks are fairly generic, which is not helped by Goodwin's vocals being the beigest of beige. - Enjoyed "N.Y." and "Pounding."
Ambitious albeit anonymous alt-rock.
Decent listen
Has its moments.
6/10 This list sure has a thing for mid-tier British indie of the 2000s. I remember this from the time and it wasn’t one that made huge waves Playing a little in the territory of Radiohead, Spiritualized, early Coldplay, but not as good as them. Nice enough but extremely forgettable Best: Here Comes the Fear
I’ve been aware of Doves for a long time, but had never gotten around to actually checking them out. I liked them! I most likely won’t be running out to listen to other stuff of theirs, but I definitely enjoyed this more than most of the other selections I’ve gotten so far!
for me this is the definition of an average album, didn't hate it but also wasn't blown away by any of the tracks, it drifted by in the background and then Spotify took over after the album finished and played Shed Seven which was when I focused back into what I was listening to.
Great production. Solid wall of sound. Quite repetitive. Too long. I don't mind listening to this album. Not essential, of course. Nothing that hadn't been done before. Kind of like Oasis at times. Favorite song: N.Y.
Two albums into my Doves journey, I get it. The long songs where they can really build are the highlights. I just wonder if they ever get confused about which song they’re playing live: is it the soaring long one or the other soaring long one or the other soaring long one? “The Cedar Room” was my favorite track from the other album and I honest to god thought they were playing it again 2-3 times on this one.
Any plural-bird-name band without a definitive article is gonna be unfairly compared to Swans in my mind. Doves are no Swans. They remind me of the Mighty Lemon Drops, a perfectly fine band I saw open for three different touring acts one year in college: affable, nice texture, but if you stuffed any calendar page from their year into a CD player, 2002 in Doves' case, this is what it would sound like. I like the percussionless "M62 song" and "Where We're Calling From" the best, so maybe the drums are the key to their blending in to the woodwork. "N.Y." betrays a grunge inclination masked in synth strings, winding into a nice arpeggiated guitar. But a lot of nice, not a lot of wow.
Oh hey, an album I was vaguely interested in but had never actually heard! Considering that my first impression of this is somewhere in the realm of "it's the Coldplay it's okay to like!," I'm surprised at how much I did in fact like it.
This is nice enough, but I also have no idea why it's here. Is it notable?
Kind if made me think of Coldplay at times. Deserves another listen as I was a bit distracted. 3.5 Stars
im sure coldplay reheated their nachos multiple times so that steals some of the excitement in this sound but im sure this felt fresher when it just came out as there's several songs that are pretty good
Follows the lineage of british pop/rock music of the 90's and early 2000's, where Radiohead, Oasis and Coldplay were kings while being distinct from eachother, the twist is that instead of shakers seen in Paranoid Android, they used the cuica and the clarinet. In theory it should be up my alley, but it feels like a second grade replacement, I would like instead the real thing(is FNM in the list?) please. 5/10
This would be incredibly influential if you'd never heard any of the bands that influenced this band, or bands influenced by this band. Not happy medium and the center cannot hold; 5.00/10
6/10 Aggressively all right, fantastically ok, epitome of “nice while it’s on”. Yeah Americans might be self centered, egomaniacal, xenophobic pieces of shit with unreasonably high standards regarding the quality of Rock and Pop music, but maybe we aren’t easily impressed by your Britslop! Down on our knees in awe at the sighting of “Coldplay but more Radiohead-y” Britpop, we’re not ‘avin it. It’s nice though I’ll be real. Anyways, here’s Wo
Deutsche Coldplay, zweite Hälfte ist deutlich besser als die erste. Manches klingt schön nostalgisch
