Fun!
hold up…. i actually really liked this
This was fun, hard, and fast. I know now why all the boys in junior high and high school loved this band.
I remember this one well. Not the best Megadeth album, but it's still really good.
Good clean fun. Turns out I really like Megadeth!
I prefer some of their later releases to this one, but it’s still excellent.
Oddly tame and actually quite sweet 🩷
Good stuff. Slightly childish lyrics from time to time, but the overall sound is good enough to carry it.
Metal is the music style I use when I need to feel good, so I can say that it is my favorite genre. Despite the surprising number of metal records on the 1001 list, most of them are classic metal rather than modern releases, so it's hard for me to evaluate them. On the one hand, I love almost all of them, but on the other hand, in the list context, they usually are not astonishing enough to be so well evaluated. I'll vote with my soul for this one, even though I know this Megadeth album is far from perfect.
a pretty solid metal album. i'm pretty new to metal and i'm still trying to figure out what i like and what i don't like in the genre. what i do know is that i enjoyed the musicianship here. the music sounds pretty good, fun, and aggressive, but the clean production left something to be desired for me. the songs were alright but sometimes were a little on the light side for me. really don't know how i feel about the cover of the blues classic 'i ain't superstitious.' i also can't help but feel like i would have liked this album better with a different singer. he's not bad, but i think his voice just isn't totally my cup of tea.
Musically, a technical masterpiece. Vocally, it's Dave Mustaine which knocks it down a star.
Rocks pretty hard, don't love the live half as much but a great energetic listen.
- I might be cheating here, but the video for "Peace Sells" is so fucking good that it boosts this from a 3 star to a 4 star album by itself. - All of this is fun. But "Peace Sells" truly is the standouts. (I also like the instrumental "Good Mourning," too, though I am not a huge fan of "Black Friday.")
The metal community was blown to bits by the apocalyptic thrash of Megadeth's Peace Sells... But Who's Buying?. By all means intense, foreboding and unrelenting in its dark underbelly of world building, Peace Sells... But Who's Buying? firmly established Dave Mustaine's band as one of the most intriguing new faces of the increasingly evolving and growing metal genre and things for them would only get better from here. Favorites: Wake Up Dead, The Conjuring, Peace Sells, Devil's Island, Good Mourning/Black Friday.
Face is melted.
I surprised myself by enjoying this a lot more than I thought I would. I’m not usually a big fan of thrash metal, but I found myself really enjoying the fast paced tight rhythms, the soaring guitar melodies and the riffs. The lyrics felt a bit neither here nor there, but overall a good experience.
Like a sledgehammer to the face, musically and in some cases lyrically. I wasn’t expecting the Jeff Beck cover but it was a nice surprise.
These guys are quite underrated and unfortunately I think it's because Mustane vocals come across as a bit whiney.
A Thrash Metal classic - I liked it a lot. Great cover of Willie Dixon's "I Ain't Superstitious".
Raaaaaaaaaggghhhh!
Great 80s metal album! Not tap as Metallica but still amazing. 4/5
Brainless thrash metal I'm all for it hell yeah. Stand-out: Peace Sells
3.6 2x
love it
I always thought of this album as a natural extension of Rust In Peace (or the other way around), so the only logical choice is to give it the same note. Peak thrash metal, great solos, good riffs and amazingly terrible vocal. Recipe for success.
Essential thrash. Really impressive bass playing and Dave Mustaine very wisely kept the band together to make an excellent album. They seemed to do pretty alright after shilling the druggies.
Fierce, Very Hard Rock - not for every day, but a great listen for when you need that testosterone blast
I went in to this listen as someone who scoffs at metal and it doesn't do much for me, even though I was surrounded by it growing up. This album is making me re-think my ways. I still don't like weirdly crunchy guitar, or what feels like performative bad-assery. Howevah, there is so much technical proficiency here that I was able to really appreciate the leads and songs. Still a bit silly at times, but this must be a high point of the genre.
The definition of ‘pretty good metal I didn’t love but enjoyed listening to’.
++: The Conjuring, Devils Island, Good Mourning/Black Friday, I Ain't Superstitious, My Last Words +: Wake Up Dead, Peace Sells, Bad Omen 8,5/10
Rating: 8.5/10 Fast and technical. A lot of great riffs and songwriting with a few underwhelming songs. The highlights are incredible and are some of the best Megadeth and thrash metal songs in general. Favorite songs: Wake Up Dead, The Conjuring, Peace Sells, Good Mourning, My Last Words. Worst song: Devil's Island.
This is the classic heavy metal I love. It's so dad rock and of it's time but I love it all the same. Good Mourning/Black Friday is my favorite track I love the guitar and drums. Great album, i love it!
Metal album art is so cool man. And the highlight of any thrash metal (or any metal) album, for me at least, is those fast-picked, high-pitched guitar solos that sound like a fluctuating current running through a stray wire. I've heard Megadeth's 'Rust in Peace' before, though I can't say I remember much about it. Were the vocals also this cheesy? Lackluster vocals aside, this album's still kickass on the instrumental end - certainly more heavy and immediately punchy than most Metallica albums I've heard - with personable basslines and scratchy riffs that huff and puff these monstrous songs along. I love the little interjective role the upper-register guitar plays on 'Peace Sells', a song that throws any subtly out the window when it comes to its messaging - at moments it's even punk-esque. The band throws in the typical thrash "slower dramatic" cut here with the first half of 'Good Mourning/Black Friday', a song that also happens to be my favorite here. The fantastical imagery here works incredibly to backdrop the chaotic, wartorn playing - I think I generally prefer this writing style. Short, punchy, and dynamic yet consistent - I by no means have a super-refined palate for thrash or anything, but to me, this is exactly what this genre should strive to sound like.
Rad! I love Dave Mustaine and his little ego-gremlin voice and guitar playing. I was a little surprised to be reminded a little of some Facelift era Alice in Chains on a few songs on here. I'm not re-spinning this one often, honestly, but it will be a good time when I do. 3.5/5
Very good album. I just assumed i didn't like Megadeth, but they have a few real banger albums. I like Rust in Peace better, but this isn't far off. 4/5
Of the two Megadeth albums featured, Rust in Peace is the stronger one, something you could show to someone who doesn’t like metal and they would appreciate it, but this is probably a better thrash album. This also shows how strong Mustaine’s songwriting and guitar skills are and how he had a unique (if not necessarily better) ear for melody than his former Metallica crew. If he had the Rust crew behind him, this could be their best. B+
I had never heard this album, but I enjoy Megadeath. Just a good, fun, loud album.
Riffs.
Would not have expected to like this as much as I did.
Knockoff Metallica is still good.
CD
This is one of those albums that I'm glad is great musically, because both the album title and the artwork are fucking awesome, and it would be a huge bummer if the music was mediocre. No worries here, this is a spectacular thrash metal album from soup to nuts 4/5
Classic ripper
great players, solid songs 3.8 - you need to be in the mood tho
One of the big 4 of 90’s thrash metal! Awesome band. \m/
Dave Mustaine spitting green globs of phlegm into my ear while gargling salt water. Sick riffs, dumb lyrics (that's a plus in thrash metal), dumb fun. What more could you ask for, except a million dollars, which is a very silly thing to ask for from an album. Also notice how both Megadeth and Metallica have a dark-blue album cover for their best album, and a dark-orange album cover for their second-best album.
Not really a metal fan but found this more accessible than Slayer. Despite being a bit gimmicky in hindsight it's still very good with highly competent musicianship.
Where do I submit the claims for all of the office supplies I destroyed while listening to this album?
I love the snarling spoken word vocals that kick off “Peace Sells.” Great hook. I vibe with the anti-authority lyrics too. Really great song. Man, these songs move fast! I can’t believe the intricate solos the guitarist is able to do playing at this tempo. Ooh I like the rock n roll swagger of “I Ain’t Superstitious.” I like that they change the style up a little and keep it fun. This was a blast. Definitely interested in hearing more Megadeth.
Please don't just have "Peace Sells" for the sake of having a Megadeth album and please reassure me that you'll have both "Rust In Peace" and "Countdown to Extinction" on this 1001 list. You'll have those on here too, right? Megadeth are great. Consistently meme'd on, joked about, vocally mimic'd (Dave Mustaine... what a vocal tone), and laughed with. But man, what a band! They were always seen as a bit behind Metallica as they didn't have that slight "pop" tinge to their music that made it so approachable like Metallica has, but that shouldn't discredit them for a second. They are masters of songwriting, and geniuses when it comes to incorporating incredibly impressive riffs into the non-stop action of thrash metal. The music must be like a playground for Dave Mustaine and Chris Poland to shred over. This album is a classic and gets more eclectic as it goes on. I actually kind of wish the track listing was a little bit different because I feel like it takes a little too long to get to the more dynamic tracks. Overall, it's a really solid effort, and "Peace Sells" is a top 100 metal song of all time, but they have two better albums.
Love Megadeth! Not my favorite album but still really good.
This is like my autism soothing music - high bpm, high energy, repetitive rhythm. The patterns/layers are like fractals fitting together in my brain. Surprised I never really got into Megadeth/thrash metal more for this reason. I like the sound.
At the top of 80's metal for sure. Great tunes.
Had recently listened to this for the first time a while ago because I wanted to dive into the Heavy Metal genre and get more familiar with it. The big four seemed like a good place to start and Megadeth was one of the few big names I hadn’t listened to yet. I was very surprised with how much I enjoyed it and its heavy metal like this that I find myself gravitating towards more and more! Was really happy to have this pop up also I had an excuse to listen to it again!
I loved this at the time but haven't heard it for years, so was expecting it to sound dated. It does sound repetitive at times. They hang on a riff for too long - but live that will have been awesome, especially when it a new sound. Ultimately it's a 3 star album with Peace Sells.... on it, which is a great track. Wake up Dead still stands up too.
Pretty great thrash from back in the day. Focus on the musicianship, not the words, though.
Hmm, I'm not a metal fan, but I liked this one. I liked it better that Rust in Pieces, and I think I'll be playing this one again.
This is a very good record. Makes me want to break shit, which is what a good thrash record should do. Though Dave Mustaine frequently chooses to act like an complete asshole, we must separate the art from the artist. And to be fair -- if I dropped a banger of an album like this and everyone said "meh" because Master of Puppets had just dropped a few months before, I'd have a pretty big chip on my shoulder too. Sorry you got mogged by your former band, Dave.
Feels great to a contrarian Metallica hater when I can listen to this and confirm that it is indeed marginally better.
4/11/24. Another band I've slept on and only know a couple songs. Even though thrash metal isn't a go-to genre for me, I enjoyed the songs on this one! Great arrangements, excellent guitar work, and each song brought something different to the table to keep me engaged. Will be listening again.
What a blast from the past. Good ole Vic Rattlehead and this thrash metal album were part of my high school years. My headbanging days were back for a day. The title track made it into my daily playlist. A great album for sure perfect sample of the genre. I really appreciate the guitar work.
Megadeth rips lol, not the best music, but full of energy and killer guitar work. Fun time
4.5
\m/ \m/
Megadeth have always been so accessible for metal, the lyrics are so unserious it almost feels like parody. But that doesn't stop the music from being the most engaging riff heavy non-stop thrash. There are only a few moments on this album where the formula doesn't quite work. The time sig changes really get to me, so good.
I enjoyed it more than I thought I liked but it made me feel sort of anxious
Much more enjoyable than expected!
3.5
dark and heavy. this is the sophomore effort by megadeth, and the anger and vitriol is still there. i forgot how prominent the bass guitar was in the mix, and i am here for it. this album over all has a great groove. and i realize that dave mustaine as a vocalist is an acquired taste, but with this band, it works. highlights: “the conjuring”, “peace sells”, “good mourning/black friday”
This album kicks you in the dick from the get go and doesn’t really let up until the ballad like tune Good Mourning. I fucking loved this, it’s theatrical, it’s fast and hilarious without swaying too far into cornfield. This starts so strong too with Wake Up Dead, The Conjuring and Peace Sells which has such a rad fat bass to open it up. The only lame track on this is Superstitious but aside from that, this rips. 4.5 stars
The singing is annoying. The music is a better version of Metallica. This was a big improvement over their debut (not on the list), but they peaked a couple of years later with Rust In Peace (also on the list). Favorite song: wake up dead.
very cool, sound gets a bit redundant though. enjoyed the lyricism quite a bit too :)
i really enjoyed this album o not typically a genre I listen to but the songs have very intricate and original arrangements I will liasten again. I tend to ignore the lyrics, I think th music is excellent.
antiikin ajoista mahtava retorinen kysymys albumin nimenä, aivan mahtava antiikin ajoista tuleva retorinen kysymys. ai en mukamassa maksa laskuja, no miksi sitten olen persaukinen. heh vokalisti dave mustaine huonoin ääni koskaan keksitty. ehkä dylani voisi mennä frontmäniksi. paskempi versio metallikasta niinhän se on heh onneksi ei löytänyt samanlaista menestystä olen iloinen tästä my last words
High energy. Thrash Metal. The album that defined Megadeth. But, lacks polish of the time.
This is probably the first metal album I’m listening to, and it’s a lot of fun to listen to. A lot of the songs are long (8 songs with a 36 minute run time) but it’s okay. The instrumentals do get a bit repetitive though, even if Mustaine and Poland trade solos. 4.4/5 Fav: Wake Up Dead Least Fav: Bad Omen (solo absolutely rips, though)
Wertung: 4/5 \m/
An album packed with thrash attack that still maintains the punk-ish attitude of the debut. One of the best Megadeth albums for sure.
One of the good classic Megadeath albums. I had this tape when I was 12, it still rocks!
A lot better than expected. Not a fan of thrash metal or death metal but this was a pretty great listen.
It took a couple of tracks in to get into this, and I'm not a big fan of the vocals, but it's pretty good. Devil's Island, Black Friday, I Ain't Superstitious, Peace Sells are all good songs. Didn't care much for the last track My Last Words. All in all, it rocks, though it made me want to listen to some Anthrax.
Awesome!
What a group. Although I prefer the Rust in Peace album, Mustaine is just so good
I don’t know that much Megadeth. I remember hearing Hanger 18 - I want to say it was on Guitar Hero but I’m not sure - and not being much of a fan, although I did really enjoy Symphony Of Destruction. I think this could go either way. Here’s hoping it’s good! Songs I already knew: none Favourites: Peace Sells, I Ain’t Superstitious This rocked my socks! It was a raw and juicy half hour of power and was great fun from front to back with no songs that I felt like skipping. If it was longer then it may have lost me a little, so it feels very purposefully short and that worked well for me. Big Dave’s voice sounds great, and the guitar playing is fantastic throughout. I’m not usually the biggest fan of this type of metal, but I liked this a fair bit more than I expected.
This album goes hard. Very upbeat heavy metal that doesn't slow down.
Even in my greasiest metalhead stage I never spent too much time with Megadeth - Dave Mustaine's voice just sounded too gimmicky and I felt they didn't hold a candle to Metallica. A few decades later and my prejudices have cooled off somewhat, and this now strikes me as being a perfectly serviceable thrash album. What were Metallica doing in 86? Oh, "Master of Puppets"!? Yeah, Metallica are still winning this contest by a mile! 😆 Fave tracks - "Peace Sells" is legit great. "Good Mourning / Black Friday" was a stand out too...
Doesn't really stand out texturally (seinfeld is unfunny?), but I could definitely listen to it.
Pretty good for a goddamn car wreck of a band. 4 stars.
Solid classic metal album
I'm buying
Every song in isolation rocks pretty hard but it gets a little too much to hear them all at once. Still, great stuff.
Before listening: peace sells is one of my favorite songs so I'm excited for this one Yea that's bangers only. We hate the lead singer though so 4 stars 🤩
Awesome the face of perfect Metal
Great metal album from the 90’s
What do you mean, "I don't believe in God"? I talk to him everyday What do you mean, "I don't support your system"? I go to court when I have to What do you mean, "I can't get to work on time"? Got nothing better to do And, what do you mean, "I don't pay my bills"? Why do you think I'm broke? Huh? If there's a new way Oh, I'll be the first in line But it better work this time What do you mean, "I hurt your feelings"? I didn't know you had any feelings What do you mean, "I ain't kind"? Just not your kind What do you mean, "I couldn't be the President Of the United States of America"? Tell me something, it's still "We the people" right? If there's a new way Oh, I'll be the first in line But it better work this time Can you put a price on peace? 4/5
Face = melted. Best track: Devils Island
Very enjoyable for an genre that isn't 100% my cup of tea.
I saw Megadeth headline Christmas on Earth 1987 in Queens Hall, Leeds, a couple of years before the venue was demolished. It was an "interesting" day. Me and my friends had to sit out most of the support bands, as we had decided to start the day with a bottle of vodka each and needed to sleep this off in a corner of the venue. However, we were all okay by the time Dave Mustaine hit the stage. The band played many tracks from this album and they pretty much all sounded better than they did on the original mix of Peace Sells. The first album was really badly produced, but this one also has a bit of a muddy sound, particularly the vocals. Megadeth have always been the lesser of the "big four" for me but this is probably one of the high points in their career. There's a couple of stand out tracks (Wake up Dead and Peace Sells), with everything else a bit forgettable. Definitely a strong 4-star, not quite enough for the full 5 stars.
4.0
I'm surprised at the low score (bang on a 3) and the negative reviews here calling this \"typical metal\" etc. I think this is one of the more fun metal albums you'll hear in your life. It breezes past at around 40 minutes, and is just alive with wild technical ability and fun songwriting. I can understand not being a fan on Mustaine's voice though, I guess i'm just used to it after knowing about Megadeth for so long. Can't quite bring myself to give it a 5, but it isn't far off. I do have a slight complaint about the remastered version I was listening to. Just seems like a slight mixing error but often the drums were very loud and the vocals seemed pushed back a lot.
Accessible hardcore metal — surprisingly enjoyable. Not my favorite music, but a revelation nonetheless.
Riffs for days. A lot of classical influence thrown in here, just played at warp speed. It's a solid overall record, but the one thing that's kept me from being a huge Megadeth fan is Mustaine's voice. Nothing personal. Favorite tracks: "Bad Omen", "Peace Sells"
4 and a half would be the go for me, i enjoyed this way more than i thought i would but it still doesn't come close to metallica's disc. for me. still a banger tho and awesome guitar parts
Megadeth come out swinging on this decidedly speed thrash record. The riffs are solid and the music is about as satisfyingly crunchy as they come. Unfortunately, Megadeth is no Metallica. In a world without Metallica, perhaps Megadeth would reign supreme, but the fact of the matter is, Megadeth isn't as melodic, and even with the fantastic guitar work, just isn't up to Kirk Hammett's mastery. It seems a bit unfair to rate this album by comparison, but if we want to situate this album within the history of popular music, such a comparison is necessary. Nevertheless, this is a wonderfully executed and tight record and one of the best of its genre.
Fine thrash metal album. No bad tracks and runs together well.
Classic metal. The title track and the closer were stand outs imo.
I've never listened to a Megadeth album before, but I'm slightly familiar with the band's founding. I don't listen to a lot of thrash metal, but I do enjoy it from time to time. I enjoyed this album, and it was a very interesting slice of rock history to listen to something that has influenced hard rock for nearly forty years. The guitar riffs are absolutely incredible, and it's evident just how talented these guys are as musicians. I can't imagine how physically demanding it must be to make music like this, much less play it in a live show. I imagine you'd have to have the power of a sprinter with the stamina of a distance runner. But I digress. The songs on here that land really land ("Wake Up Dead," "Peace Sells," the "I Ain't Superstitious" cover, and "My Last Words), but for me, everything else just kind of blended together. This is still a great album, but based on what I've heard, I'm looking forward to Rust in Peace more.
8/10 - Solid thrash album
4/5. Not a perfect metal album with some misses but Black Friday and The Conjuring are great as well as most of the other songs. Fast and angry, short and sweet.
Nice a brutal. I've not listened to this for over 25 years and didn't appreciate how good this album is. Thrash with a bit of a Sabbath influence is not a bad thing
Megadeth? Mega Fuck Yeah!
Super fun. Melted my face.
This album made me smile.
I can hear the hard drugs pumping though my speakers.
I've never been a Dave Mustaine fan but I've managed to be friends with folks who are. This means that while I have a track record of loving metal, I'm not a Megadeth aficionado. My impressions: - I can't stand the vocals some of the time on Wake Up Dead and I think that will continue to be true over the course of the record. - A little too much room in the mix means that even their most punishing riffs don't feel monumental to me. - There are some fine breakdowns and a few choice riffs though. - You can see why Peace Sells But Who's Buying is famous: it's a riff with a groove, a classic 80s first-person cynical, anti-establishment subject matter, catchy repeated chorus/refrain, soaring guitar solo and a double-time outro. It's a vibe. I don't think that single represents the totality of the album very well. - Best stretch of songs is from Peace Sells to Bad Omen. That's 4 songs for about 20 mins of music. - I Ain't Superstitious should be struck from the record. - My Last Words gives me some Maiden vibes and that is not a bad thing, just a little surprising that the closer reminds me of another band so strongly. Overall, 3.5 stars. It's a weak four, but better than most threes.
The similarities between this and Metallica are pretty obvious, even if you do not know the history. I wish the drummer was better, though. He seems more of the thrash standard. He sounds more mixed to the back, probably because he did not have a lot to do. It's trying so hard to be like "Ride The Lightning," but it's not as melodic to me. There's more of a sludge and crunch to it. Still, I enjoyed it for what it was. But between the two bands I am going to pick Metallica.
Never listened to this before. I loved that transition at the end of “Wake Up Dead.” What a way to start an album! “The Conjuring” kicked ass too. I guess I’m in a metal mood today. “Peace Sells” is a classic and the one song that I knew off of this album. Overall, it’s a good thrash album except for “I Ain’t Superstitious” which doesn’t seem to work as a bluesy thrash song.
I remember my cousin blasting this out loud in the 90's when I was a wee lad. It stil evokes flashbacks of that time, but in hindsight it was a perfect prelude to their better albums. Brilliant interludes, I love mustaine's guitar sound. Cigarette bass boggles me mind I it's crispiness, but it seamlessly blends into the background to create an orchestra of madness as you trash your way onwards. Never been a fan of Mustaine's vocal, but hey, never been a fan of Ozzy as well and here we are with over 10.000 scrobbles of BS. Must hear- good mourning/black Friday, just because I've always been a sucker for acoustic intro and arpeggios. Meaty rhythm guitar, clean distortion but man how crispy it sounds sometimes.
4/5
I think I've said it before but I've been pleasantly surprised by Megadeth in this list. Not always (or to be honest, often) in the mood for metal, but this is good stuff, classic speed dynamics, actually pretty smart lyrics with even some actually decent singing.
Bloody hell what an album. Mustaine's voice fits the vibe perfectly and the harmonizing guitar riffs are astounding. Some tracks like 'Devils Island' and 'I Ain't Superstitious' feel a bit bland, but the two-punch of 'Good Mourning/Black Friday' and 'Bad Omen' along with the closer 'My Last Words' are all incredible.
I don't listen to a lot of metal, especially "thrash metal" as this band and album are typically categorized, but I've heard the name Megadeth since they emerged in the 80s, and I am very glad to have the chance to listen to this one. It's really, really good. These musicians are incredibly skilled. I know from my own clumsy attempts to learn and play music that it is very difficult to play at high tempos and in tight synchronization. Super-high energy, and so on. I know that kind of sonic attack is exactly what they went for. This band pulls it all off in spades. I usually don't understand what the vocalist, Dave Mustaine, is singing, but I have a strong feeling that's intended. And I know if I tried to sing like that my throat would give out in the first line, so I imagine it takes some training, time, and skill to perform like he does. Yet another example of why I truly love this project. I doubt I would have made the effort to listen to any of Megadeth's music were it not for this project. So cool.
From the very start, Megadeth is right in your face with wild chaotic instrumentation, full of overlaying loud and speedy riffs, basslines, and drum patterns. Sets a new standard for prog metal being so technologically advanced, and serves as a precursor to death metal for its ferocity. A lot of the songs tend to blend together, and I especially got bored by the latter half. It tried to spice things by starting out slower and melodic but then cranks up the speed to max which got a bit tiresome. The rockabilly-infused "I Ain't Superstitious" was a cool surprise though. Favorites: Wake Up Dead, Peace Sells, Devil's Island, I Ain't Superstitious
Highlight: Peace Sells
Yep its metal alright. The back half had me more interested than the front bit. My Last Words has a pretty amazing bass line. This album is probably worth a revisit.
It's not rust in peace but it'll do. Peace sells has a really fun baseline to play.
Ok
Kun Biisin laittaa soimaan.. paskalta kuullostaa.. kun antaa soida.. Jumalauta... Soikin... Sitten albumia kun soittelee.. Noh Jooh ON HYVÄÄ! 5:teen ei yllä..
Like it
Not my favorite Megadeth album but still pretty rad.
Peace Sells and I’m definitely buying!
Great album! No wonder they copied themselves for the last 10 years
Classic Megadeth right here. Love the thrash and love the cover art even more.
This album is just full of energy right from the beginning. This is my 2nd megadeth album and i liked this one way more than the other. I thought it was going to go crazy the whole time, but they knew when to slow/quiet it down. Electric 7/10
Album dropped you off in hell 15 seconds in and left you there for 50 straight minutes
This is cool mix of some modern stuff but really heavy rooted with blues. Got some chord progressions sound like something I’d make and I make great stuff
Two things The List has taught me: 1. Fuck jazz; 2. Megadeth aren't half bad. Thank you The List.
first listen blistering guitar
Pretty solid thrash record. It is an early contributor to the genre, so kudos for that. The tracks kind of blended together, I had a couple moments where I thought I was hearing songs for the second time, other than I Ain't Superstitious, which was a bluesy track that came out of left field. Enjoyable, fast, driving thrash metal that grows on you with multiple listens. As a big fan of early Metallica and Iron Maiden, this album has shown me that I will have to pay a little more attention to the early releases from Megadeth. Fave tracks: The Conjuring, Good Mourning / Black Friday
This is a fun album, classic thrash sound, good political messages with a bit of devil worship and face melting guitar licks. I found the songs and lyrics to be varied enough that I didn't get bored with the sound, and the shorter playtime also helped with that, definitely a strong entry in the thrash genre. Fav Tracks: Peace Sells, Good Mourning / Black Friday, My Last Words
I think this one has grown on me. I first listened to it coming right off of Rust In Peace, and I compared it unfavorably to that masterpiece. But seeing it in its own light, its a damn fun thrash album.
I think my main issue with Megadeth is a lack of diversity in their sound compared to the other 3 of the Big 4. I'd listen to it again, but not while focusing on it.
Struggled to rate this. Its pretty cheesy metal but it was fun! Squeeze a sympathy 4.
A very solid metal album from the 'Deth
Rating: 7/10 Best songs: The conjuring, Peace sells
A highly dramatic and unified thematic work (the forms of evil). Epileptic, stormy and satanic. Metal... (7/10) FT: Wake Up Dead
Good speed metal sound
Easy listening!
My least favourite of the big 4 but still love them. This is among their best albums.
I was taken by surprise at how much I enjoyed RUST IN PEACE from Megadeth earlier, but even so I wasn’t jazzed to have this come up at first. Guess I’m still not quite completely comfortable with my thrash metal side… take a deep breath and hit play… This is unmistakably Megadeth - it rocks hard and has several songs that frolic in what I was warned about with heavy metal. Just one listen to “The Conjuring” and I’m doing an Yelp search for nearby black conventicles... There are some pretty interesting lyrics that I really enjoyed. The title track “Peace Sells” is pretty great (‘What do you mean I ain’t kind? Just not your kind’). I love that sassy vocal delivery. Of course then there’s “Good Mourning/Black Friday” that seems to revel in gory murder. Not really my favorite subject and it wasn’t for me… although the guitar really is impressive. The demonic imagery seems poured on thicker on this album than on RUST IN PEACE. I didn’t like this album as well, but I’m still surprised at how listenable I find it.
I liked this a lot. Some songs dragged a bit and felt too long, but most of it was great.
Hadn't heard before and really enjoyed it. The lead track I listened to a few times. Maybe I was just really in the mood!
This is our second Megadeth album. Like for the other one, I surprisingly like Megadeth a lot more now than when I was a full-on metal head but just wasn't into old school thrash metal. Funny how tastes change like that. This one just wasn't quite as good as 'Rust in Peace' though, which got five stars from me. It's really solid, but not an amazing standout album.
4.1 - Apparently this album stands as a milestone in metal, and that esteem is well deserved. The guitar is undeniably awesome and the rhythms are crazy advanced without sounding pedantic.
Great example of the genre. Some unusual elements too, which makes it even better.
Loved it
Heavy metal. Guitarras potentes.
Heavy metal. Guitarras potentes.
Killer \_ _/
Love a good metal album Not sure what stands out to me here. But I found this to be a very solid listen.
Heavy metal. Guitarras potentes.
A lot of fun, good background
There's only one 'a' in 'Megadeth' because there is A LOT of death. (That makes almost no sense... I'm also trying to make sense on why now, 40 years after listening to this once and hating it, that it's now listenable and borderline enjoyable.) At the time, Vic Rattlehead, the Megadeth mascot, seemed like a poor execution and ripoff of Iron Maiden's Eddie. Somehow Maiden was more respectable and Megadeth was inferior. Today, this conjures memories of getting baked while watching Beavis and Butthead which inevitably brings a smile to my face. A relic for sure, but happy to have had an excuse to revisit this.
Sou Metallica e tals... Mas respeitamos
Fuerza, riffs y contundencia. Interpretada a la voz magistralmente.
I'm not so sure that Metallica didn't hear this album and decide to change direction based on this. Awesome 80's metal! Favorite Tracks: "Peace Sells" "Devil's Island"
🤘🎸
Somehow I never listened to this and I really liked it.
A lot better than I expected. Really nice bass lines. Lyrically it's pretty sound.
Wake Up Dead и The Conjuring, Devils Island, Bad Omen звучат душно. Good Mourning / Black Friday I Ain't Superstitious My Last Words снова маленький шедевр. So Far, So Good... So What! Peace Sells… but Who’s Buying?
Great album!! 😄😄
Love the almost military groove at the end of wake up dead. It's really good, however the vocals don't gel with me.
Partial listen
Great metal album. Thudding drums, interesting vocals that swap between growls and almost glam levels of yelling into the stars, and wild even at times sporadic guitar riffs make this an overwhelming experience in a good way. It's not as punishing as a lot of metal albums can be, it's more just a wild, propulsive and energetic good time.
Great but not their best
When this came out, I was just starting my journey through heavy metal and did not know Megadeth... unfortunately. Beautiful album!
Saved Prior: None Off Rip: Wake Up Dead, The Conjuring, Peace Sells, Devils Island, My Last Words Cutting Edge: None Overall Notes: I considered myself a metal-hater, but it seems I have a soft spot for thrash. Probably stems from my time listening to the Madden '10 soundtrack every weekend as a kid, but I liked this. Do I get metal? No. But I get thrash. Wouldn't want anyone to know that I listen to this when I'm driving down the street, but it's great in doses.
seems like this was intense in the 80s, but now it's more like a gritty catchy metal. raging against society and feels good while doing it.
accidentally listened to this out of order whoops. the music rips hard and it's not too long. as with most metal i like it better when they're not singing. 8/10

I still have my copy of this around the house, somewhere.
Not my fave Mustaine & co., but I do like a bunch of these tunes. Dave’s voice is in full snarl at times, which just sounds cooler than the infamous nasal-whine he so often resorts to. But dang… “I Ain’t Superstitious”? Yeah, that should have never been put on this record (or any, perhaps). I have a sneaking feeling that when it comes to metal we’ll be seeing more from Maiden, Metallica, and Megadeth. We’ll get some Sabbath and Slayer. Maybe - *maybe* - one Anthrax record. And that’s probably it. If there’s anything metal on this list that was recorded after the year 2000 I’ll be stunned.
actually pretty sick
Great album, especially on a US holiday. Feels patriotic.
\m/
Great album up and down, first Megadeth album but I really really enjoyed it. Perfect exemplification of the era and the genre. A little more diversity in style and it would be a perfect 5.
Rockin’
This album is all killer no filler. Every track is fucking huge. It’s a shame it’s so poorly produced. The drum sound is shit The bass sound is shit The guitar sound is shit Dave Mustaine sounds like a pirate (this is merely an observation, and is in no way a negative) Interestingly, the original Randy Burns mix is significantly better than what was ultimately released. It’s well worth a listen.
Good stuff. I don't listen to metal, but this is some good music here. Pleasantly surprised.
Decent.
At the end of Rust In Peace my primary thought was "this is a very cool, well put together, album that is simply not my thing. At the end of Peace Sells... But Who's Buying? I had the exact same thought word for word, but maybe with less songs I actually enjoyed. I think the only song on the album I really got into was Peace Sells. Everything else is good, but simply not my thing. I still have nothing but respect for Megadeth.
wat een heerlijke gitaren !!!
It's fun, it's thrash!
Listened to on my Bose AE2 Soundlink. Megadeth is a pretty rockin' band, one that I'm fairly familiar with due to exposure from Guitar Hero and an appreciation for their album Rust in Peace. Peace Sells..., which came out two albums prior to that great release, sees Megadeth find it's footing as one of the four horsemen of thrash metal after Dave Mustaine's early departure from Metallica. Peace Sells... has some good tunes, especially it's title track which has been a favorite of mine for years, but sitting down with this album as a whole, I didn't find myself particularly blown away. The album starts out strong with Wake Up Dead, with it's fast energy and heavy ass riff/solo section leading the second half of the song to it's end, and it doesn't take too long until we reach the title track Peace Sells, which is just an all time metal classic, with it's iconic bass opening, great riffs, and fun vocals from Mustaine, which are both entertaining in it's content and it's delivery. Unfortunately, there weren't many other highlights on this album outside of these for me. It's all well-produced and impressively played rock, but it just doesn't excite me too much, and Mustaine's vocals on the whole felt bland lyrically and often a bit grating in it's delivery. Even in moments where the band find themselves exploring the creative boundaries of metal, like in the blues-metal fusion of I Ain't Superstitious, I don't find myself very surprised or engaged. Peace Sells... is a good set of metal, and I wouldn't mind throwing it on, but it doesn't stand out very strongly to me against a lot of the other monumental 80s metal releases that really capture me.
This was better than I was expecting. Was catchy for the most part, even tho only one song is going to make it on a list of mine for now.
I don’t think I have listened to Megadeth since I was a kid. A friend of mine was big into thrash - Metallica, Megadeth, Nuclear Assault, etc. I didn’t mind some - mainly Metallica - but my tastes weren’t really into it, preferring goth and early industrial/ebm even back then. So, this is probably the first time in almost 40 years that I’ve listened to these guys… It’s funny how tame this album feels now.
Breakdown in Wake Up Dead was cool I Ain't Superstitious was suprising
Solid
Technically excellent, there's some very good instrument playing happening here. I don't really know enough about thrash as a genre to say whether or not this was a good representation of the style, but I liked it well enough. It was very similar to Metallica, which I see from the Wikipedia page is because Dave Mustaine was in Metallica.
Not much of a metal fan but this sounded fun.
Run of the mill thrash metal. It's not bad just not special.
Not my thing (I don't like Metallica either), but good for what it is.
Rust in Peace is a solid 4-star effort from the heavy metal crew. So what does PSBWB bring to the table? (Answer: One less star and a truckload of music that is clearly not supposed to be taken seriously.) Angry, harsh, and blisteringly fast. The lyrics are probably good, but it's the way they're delivered that really resonates with the listener. In a good way or an extremely bad way, depending on which part of which song you focus on. The beginning of The Conjuring, for example, uses such a horrifically bad vocal tone that I'd rather tear my ears off than listen to it again. Wake Up Dead contains a fun extended riff – in fact, it's so extended, across so many bars, that it departs from riffage and becomes something more like a weirdly mixed solo. The false finish and complete tempo change near the end gains some bonus points too. Megadeth also manage to squeeze three solid guitar solos into a 3:37-long track. Pretty impressive. Or gutsy. Or overzealous. Take your pick. Next we have The Conjuring, which I'd hope the band is self-aware enough to notice that the singing is absolutely godawful. The rest of the instruments, though, are pretty good. And I enjoy the doomy atmosphere, especially with the instrumental at the very beginning. The title track's rhythm guitar chugs along, with its melody almost making the band sound like the thrash equivalent of Black Sabbath. (Am I crazy?) The much clearer-sounding lead guitar does wonder during the solo that essentially runs underneath the entire track. Cool. Vocals are a bit repetitive, though. Devils Island... now that, I can dig. Even if clearly lacks an apostrophe. It becomes clear after a certain point in the album that... well... Megadeth is not particularly good at coming up with hooks. Good Mourning / Black Friday is a sign of things to come, but at least it still kind of rocks. Bad Omen is the real bad omen. (Hence its title.) I Ain't Superstitious is the exception, being way punchier and catchier than its streaming numbers would suggest. 3/5 Key tracks: Wake Up Dead, Devils Island
nothing stood out on this record but it was fun anyways
I've never been a big metal guy, but this is a lot of fun. It's really just a lot of noise, but whatever, it's better than half of the list as is.
This was pretty good actually - maybe not quite as hooky as Metallica, but solid nonetheless. Favourite tracks: Wake Up Dead, Peace Sells, Devils Island, Good Morning / Black Friday.
I guess it's okay for a thrash album. I suppose I was never really into it
2026.06.08-09.
The guitars shred, expected when you put on thrash metal. I was surprised how good the bass is throughout! Dave's singing is a bit hit or miss for me, sometimes it is great and other times it is grating. Cool record but it all blends together and I can't really tell them apart, just 8 songs at 36 minutes so that isn't terrible.
Not my cup of tea but there were hints of Iron Maiden in there for sure.
Sounds like, and very much is, an album by a guitarist with an axe to grind. Super technical, constantly changing hyperactive songs full of high tempo.riffs and squealing shredding solos.
IM KIND OF INTO THIS TODAY
6.5/10 - I like thrash arguably more than the next guy, but I think full thrash albums are hard to wade through because of their pacing. It’s all gas in a way that less might be more. This is a good album for the genre and has one of a Megadeths biggest songs, so its inclusion makes sense, but this isn’t one of the best thrash albums. Good but not great.
It's fine, metal isn't my thing and this doesn't move the needle one way or the other. 6/10
mega mid
I'm buying that this is solid metal. But seriously folks, this album is not my usual jam but I enjoyed it. Good psych up/workout soundtrack to get the heart thumping. Top tracks: "Devils Island," "Good Mourning/Black Friday," "Wake Up Dead"
I hear a good riff -> it becomes white noise -> the song ends -> repeat.
Inoffensive but not my thing.
5/10 Generally not a fan of metal, but there's nothing wrong with this album. Not my type of music but it's not so distasteful that I feel repulsed. Middle of the road.
High school flashbacks. Don’t think I’ve listened to this since then. I don’t remember Dave’s vocal being so low in the mix. My memory is that they were/should be more prominent. Still rocks.
5/10
stamina, pure 80’s metal, gone are the flourishes and riffs and blues of 70’s rock, this is just pure intensity
Actually a good album, but it gets a bit monotonous in the long run.
The guitar playing is really technically proficient
a well played well written album, but thrash isn’t really my style, those who love it will see it as a classic. But for me, i can respect it and understand the appeal, just doesn’t strike right.
People say you can’t dance to this kind of music but clearly they’ve never seen me in my kitchen listening to this album. The second half of this album blows but that first half is gold.
Pretty average to be honest I could just be that I'm numb to thrash metal at this point but this album feels really uninspired. Theres a few good songs here and there but nothing to make a cohesive experience 5/10 Favourite: Wake Up Dead Least Favourite: I Ain't Superstitious
It's pretty decent. It's quite full-on, but accomplished and fun enough.
I met the guitarist from Megadeth a few weeks ago. I'm still not listening to this record though.
They are the pathfinders of a whole genre and kind of define heavy metal. This is typical fare - honestly I find it so repetitive after a while that it loses any power it might have to jolt or shock…
Peace Sells is Dave Mustaine at his Mustainiest. A bit less polished than his former brothers in Metallica, a bit less practiced at song craft, a chip on his shoulder and something to prove about his own chops. Also, starting with a song about getting plastered and sleeping with another woman and having to not wake up his partner. Again, Peak Mustaine. But then, has Metallica ever been so puckish as to even write a song title like “wake up dead” or “peace sells… but who's buying?” The closest would be titling a song about a sanitarium “Welcome Home.” Dave leans into the less serious side of thrash and metal, despite being probably as big an asshole as the genre has. That title track walks that line. We know Dave is exactly the person who would give a line “I go to court when I have to” and be both sarcastic and sneeringly honest. But that petulance is framed by the anthemic shout along outro and an intro that will forever just be the MTV news theme to me. Maybe cruel that the most memorable riff on this album isn't from Dave's guitar. It's trite to view Megadeth in Metallica terms, but it's not like Dave doesn't invite it. How can we not hear Good Mourning/Black Friday and not hear an intro that is trying to outshine Fade To Black's? That's probably the defining aspect here… Dave's single-mindedness to out-thrash his peers, albeit a little later. Countdown to Extinction comes just after the Black Album. Cryptic Writings comes in the wake of Load. So it's interesting that Peace Sells includes something totally unique: a blues cover. I Ain't Superstitious is pretty intriguing here… not only does it pre-date Metallica covering non-punk and metal songs by a decent clip, it ends up being both an earnest take as well as arguing that the blues structure could accommodate metal shred. Thrash isn't really my metal, and metal isn't often my jam, but you can see a lot of what people see in it. Especially in songs like My Last Words, which might be my fave here, or Devil's Island, which i liked the guitar work on. 3*
Not the production quality of Metallica. Some of this sounds like a home recording in a garage. That adds a little bit of authenticity/a cool factor though. The song structures are not as epic as Metallica either. But, notice how I (and everyone else) compares Megadeth to Metallica? You can’t separate the two, and it’s not just because they threw Dave out of the band. The two not only source from the same thrash metal scene, they share an essential ‘sound.’ But, one can hear the proof in the pudding- as talented as Dave is, he’s not the sharp, precise, machine that made Metallica into the gods they are. He’s a free spirit, Halloween renegade.
Perfectly cromulent 80s thrash metal!
Classic speed metal. Great song crafting and musicianship performed with sophomoric lyrics. Dave M is an ass, but I feel like this band gets overlooked.
I do enjoy metal, but this is just kinda background metal. I like a little heavier guitar sound I think. Not bad, not great. Good to have on while I'm doing other stuff.
I'm a metalhead myself and I do appreciate this album, especially the excellent riffs. Unfortunately I've never been particularly into thrash metal or Megadeth. Good album, but I want more lyricism out of my music.
It was cool to get some metal after a lot of R&B and stuff on my list recently. This started strong for me, but honestly faded into "more of the same." I'm fine with thrash and Megadeath is definitely a heavy hitter in the space, but an entire album is a bit too much for me to enjoy all at once. I could see really digging a few songs, then moving on. 5/1/26
Not a bad album, but since this one is hailed as one of the icons of thrash metal, I expected more. The interludes of speed drumming and a-million-notes-a-minute guitar were too few and far between. Very sludgy at other times, with fairly crappy vocals. The band’s oddly placed cover of “I Ain’t Superstitious” isn’t going to make anyone forget the Jeff Beck group.
First time ever listening to Megadeath. Some Great shredding, and some good riffs. Overall, not for me, but appreciate the musicianship. Highlights: “Bad Omen”
Me, after three cups of coffee. Bursts of long, intense, jittery, laser focus insanity. It’s on and it’s bot turning off for hours. It will return in full for e at 3am. Relentless pounding.
In 1989 I was enrolled in night school at UGA (long story for another review). Night school is a peculiar mix of people. You have your slightly older students who are paying the bills who are focused and have a goal. These people do the best. Then you have a large body of light at souls. Kids who aren't quite sure they want to be in college but what else are they gonna do. Chris was one such kid from the latter group. We chatted after class. He was from a town about an hour south of UGA. Turns out he lived in my apartment complex. We started to hang out at his apartment. He had a room mate - Greg. Im sure anyone my age knew a number of Gregs and Chrises - maybe even in your friends and in your friend group. G&C were not in my friend group. They were not quite ready for prime time. But I did like to hang out (for set amounts of times) mostly because they loved loved loved metal and it cranking up some big dumb metal was a great way to decompress before returning to the drama of my apartment (another long story I'll save for a future review). So we would gather occasionally and crank up tunes - most of which I knew - but one album I just hadn't f*cked with was Peace Sells...G&C were big fans. I knew the title track form high school but never pursued Megadeth further. What better atmosphere to appreciate some righteous shredding than in a 4th apartment of a buddy from night school. I too brought things to them to try and explain their worlds. The one thing they really bit on was Goat by the Jesus Lizard - arguably the best album of the 90s but that is discussion for another time. There's a certain undeniable joy in bouncing around an apartment with a couple of knuckleheads with reckless abandon - for a while. See - I had a life outside that 4th floor apartment. G&C hung out together. A lot. And they're favorite hobby was to accompany the aforementioned slam dance party with a bottle of Robetusin (roboing). No judgement but not my jam. So as evening approached night I would depart and go out into the world leaving G&C to their hermetically sealed environment. That is the last time I saw Gregg. He and Chris kept hitting the Robo and things devolved into a scrum that ended up with Chris getting stabbed. It was minor wound but more than enough to break up the band. Gregg went back home. Chris followed at the end of the quarter. This all lasted about 2 months. But I still think about those guys. People who pass through your life. You generate a few memories. Maybe have a keepsake (the blank cassette on which I taped this album might be in my attic). I hope those guys found they're way. I can't separate this album from a moment in 1989 where the future looked large if generally unnoticed, bad decisions weren't necessarily a knock blow and a big dumb riff accompanying a bad attitude seemed ike it really mattered. And maybe it did. I raise a glass to Greg and Chris. Thanks for sharing this album with me. As for the album itself - the remaster sounds so much better than my crappy cassette dub of my youth. When they are on (about half the album) they cook. Now go listen to Goat.
Enjoyed some, some not
LOUD but loved the line "you say I hurt your feelings, didn't know you had them"
(60/100)
Was OK, love the technical guitar and drum work but the songs aren't strong enough to warrant very good status.
Actually better than I was expecting
I don't know why I was expecting a heavier sound. It didn't disappoint, but I've been hearing about Megadeth being super hardcore and a lot of their songs felt melodic. Maybe this is my ignorance with metal showing, but I enjoyed the album nonetheless. Highlight: Devils Island
I like Megadeth, but I don’t love them. This album rocks though. I think my favourite aspect is the prominence of the bass guitar. That being said, is it just me or is the sound a little thin? It has the sound of a thrash band playing through an am radio. Not a deal breaker. Just curious.
My boss likes megadeth. This is still corny but I don’t mind listening that much
Surprised by how much I enjoyed this one.
I was less annoyed by Mustaine's voice in this than I usually am
I respect the technical capabilities of the instrumentation, particularly the drums. While this isn't an album (or genre) that I'll revisit any time soon, I respect that it exists and there is a passionate fanbase.
Fast pace but nothing to write home about
Aggressive/thrash metal. Good if in a headbanging mood.
The title track is a genuine thrash masterpiece with amazing riffs, but the rest of the record feels inconsistent and Dave Mustaine's vocals are definitely an acquired taste for many listeners who enjoy metal.
Mega - energy !!!
We had a friend who loved Megadeth and he got teased. “Not normal death, not big death, it’s Mega Death. Death that is MEGA”. It was funnier at the time. The joke needs lots of repetition and about 10 people joining in to work. Anyway, I actually think this album goes pretty hard. Not Mega hard, but pretty hard.
Heavy metal archetype. Not really for me. Interesting and entertaining though. Gothic, over the top, they know their game. Can definitely see these guys as a huge influence for Angine de Poitrine.
Osrednji album.
Cool and fun listen looking forward to see what other metal albums I come across on this list.
Classic metal
There are some really amazing guitar riffs and drums throughout this album. For metal the yelling isn't that bad (much better than I was expecting!). But the yelling and repetitive lyrics of the genre just don't do much for me. Of metal its actually not awful, but it just not my thing.
I always expect to hate metal, and often I do. Maybe it's the state of the world, the state of my own mind or the state of this particular metal...but I didn't hate this. I even added the title track to my playlist. That being said, one time through was enough.
5.5/10
3/5 - Enjoyable metal, would listen to again but nothing really stood out to my ear.
I love metal, and Megadeth is great, but this is a lot with your morning coffee.
Kind of fun if you're in the mood
Whilst the guitar playing wows me, as it should anyone, I don't have the same engagement with the singing or the group as a whole compared to many other metal groups on this list. Fun and impressive, but not as much of a reaction to this as I hoped for.
6/10
Stilgetreuer Metall mit erkennbarer musikalischer Qualität.
Fine, but not my thing.
Enjoyable heavy metal
Serious hair metal. Album is too long and a lot of filler but a good listen
"Peace Sells" is an AMAZING song. However, I know Megadeth has MUCH better content. This isn't bad, but not their best. Dave Mustaine's voice is definitely not my favorite, but it works here, HOWEVER the fact he sings and plays these riffs is so impressive. I think the riffs get better, vocals get clearer, and solos get crazier later. Still a strong album tho. Actual rating 3.5 Liked Songs: "Wake Up Dead" , "The Conjuring" , "Peace Sells" , "Bad Omen" , "I Ain't Superstitious" , "Rattlehead" , "Devils Island"
Solid! Obviously not something I’d ever listen to again, but some really good guitar throughout. Not as cringey as some other albums of a similar genre.
This is a cool album for sure and I did not expect it to snag my attention the way it did, and then I spent 40 or so minutes waiting for it to do something else and it didn't.
Overall not bad but not my favorite either, pretty close to my 3 star opinion of Metallica
Better than I expected. A lot better. Not my kind of music as per usual but this one is pretty good. 🤘
Unpopular opinion. Megadeth is really April Wine crossed with AC/DC. Myles Goodwyn vocals attached to a slightly sped up version of AC/DC. Similar guitar tones. I recall this album being released having just arrived in Los Angeles to begin a first career as a high school teacher. As a Canadian from a small town moving to LA was like landing on the moon. An alien landscape full of disorienting features. What was comforting and anchoring was a fervent punk rock music scene. The sounds coming from Megadeth were not knew. There were already many hardcore bands playing much faster than what was on Megadeth 2nd record. But Megadeth were metal and playing faster. And at least on one song they had borrowed from punk rock the idea that metal could communicate a message. For a band composed of 2 acknowledged severe drug addicts and 2 homeless individuals this album was pretty much the definition of a metal/punk crossover. Peace Sells is the political track that takes the album out of the metal norm. Little known fact - the next single released after Peace Sells was a cover of Anarchy In The U.K. The fascination with the occult? See Black Sabbath. The Conjuring and Bad Omen were played back to back on this tour. Cover of I Ain’t Superstitious is interesting but essentially a throwaway. This is not to knock Megadeth or this album. I will note that the self-titled Megadeth (2026) is actually a great final record. Dave is only a year younger than me so to put out an excellent record when you are 64 years old is pretty amazing. But I digress. In the band’s Discography this is kind of a mid tier record and when compared with other similar band’s records released in 1986 - Metallica’s Master of Puppets, Slayer’s Reign in Blood, Cro-Mags Age of Quarrel, Dark Angel Darkness Descends and Metal Church The Dark, I’ve got Peace Sells in the middle of the pack. You have to remember these records all are excellent compared with the wave of glam metal (Poison, Ratt and their ilk) shit that was being released. Peace Sells and My Last Words are my favorite tracks. This was a nice revisit. 3/5
Megadeath is kinda "meh" as a whole, but those phenomenal, artistic guitar riffs are their bread, and butter. The opening, and closing tracks delivery to the fullest extent. It's hard to buy peace, but millions of people continue to buy this album for some reason, so give it a go. Favorite Track: "My Last Words".
Megadeth always seemed scary to me growing up and seeing other kids with the band's patches on their bags. It's amusing to me now I know how not scary their music is. The talent of the musicians is evident throughout this album. The rhythm section in particular is fantastic, and the lead guitar has some great moments. I see the drummer got fired for drug abuse after this album, but whatever he was on was working during recording. That said, bar a couple of tracks in the middle where the album really hits its stride, this album didn't do anything for me. Heavy metal might not be scary, but it also doesn't fire me up or energize me - it just kind of washes over me. There are also too many songs with very similar, predictable structure.
Peace Sells still rips, by Megadeth matured into a better band without "selling out".
Not as good as Metallica
Typically not a fan of the genre, but I am glad to have listened. Dare I say megadeath > Metallica -Ruby I enjoyed this more than I thought I would. Riffs are cool and the whole band is playing well. —Noah
It was fine.

Not gonna lie, some of these songs are almost unlistenable due to Dave Mustaine’s occasionally torturous vocals and cringey lyrics. However, the instrumental performances pretty fun and technically impressive, which kind of balances everything out. My favorite track has to be “I Ain’t Superstitious,” which is apparently a cover of an old Willie Dixon song. I would have never expected blues music to work in a thrash metal context, but the result legitimately borders on brilliant! My rating “rules” would normally put this album square in the two star camp (since I’d never willingly listen to the whole LP again and I’d be mildly annoyed if someone else put it on in front of me), but considering half the tracks ended up being highlights for me, I reckon a light three is warranted this time. Highlights: Wake Up Dead, Devils Island, I Ain’t Superstitious, My Last Words
3.5 Decent.
