Reviews (page 10 of 13)
great music, but the quality was constantly distracting me. an unfortunate aspect of older music
I liked a few songs
Hmm - I like Cream. At least, I was quite sure, that I like Cream ;-) But this album sounds oldfashioned. Nothing, what needs a spin on my player. As it does not hurt, 3 stars
Some massive hits, but super disjointed as an album.
Pretty solid psychodelic rock!
Some of the songs are kinda boring. Others are pretty good.
Sunshine of your love- 60ziger halt.
Virkelig fed tråd. Sangene er lidt hit or miss.
70s (psychedelische) rock sound, niet slecht, niet bijzonder.
IN THE SUN-SHINE OF YOUR LOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE super hippy dudes wowzers 3.9/5
I have not historically been a fan of Clapton and his various projects but I'm older now and more patient with this project. For me, this album benefited from a few listens. It's a good blend of blues rock and psychedelia. I prefer "Sunshine of Your Love" in the context of this album way more than the classic rock radio stations of my childhood.
J'aurais adoré être un boomer pour apprécier cet album à sa juste valeur.
Azucun souvenir de cet album si ce n'est sa présence notable dans la bande son des Rois de la Glisse
Sunshine of Your Love was on the first set list I played after learning drums. It's a delightful song to learn on. A lot of flexibility in Ginger Baker's drumming. His performance here is among my favorite drum performances. Eric Clapton, even taken before his current assholery, has always been an asshole. He learned the blues well, but he's not the best. He learned to sing, but he's not the best. Yet he acts like he's god's gift. Look, it's sad his kid died, okay? I just don't like the man. I understand why this album is "important". Several tracks are mainstays on all the classic rock stations. Strange Brew, Sunshine of your Love, and Tales of Brave Ulysses (aka Sunshine of Your Love, part 2). Much of the rest of the album is really really *okay*. Feels like it's chasing the tail of the Beatles much of the time. It's not even groundbreaking psychedelia for its time. It feels conservative in its nature -- like the band is dipping its toe into the zeitgeist, but doesn't want to commit.
That was fun, some I'd heard before.
Guitar Hero 3! Sunshine of Your Love has one of those riffs that you feel like was always there. It’s so simple, yet so iconic and catchy. One of the best riffs of all time. I feel like there were a couple of other good songs on the album, but it was mostly forgettable otherwise. I will give it a 3 star for housing an all time song.
The genius of Eric Clapton is hard to deny, but I don’t find much that stands out too much in this album from other 60s psychedelic rock. Sunshine Of Your Love is a classic and by far the best song on the album. Strange Brew right before Sunshine makes for a strong opening. I don’t think it’s a bad album by any means and it wasn’t hard to get through. Overall, a quick, solid album. I still think I’ll stick with listening to Clapton’s solo stuff before I get back to Cream, though.
Some good songs, but like a lot of psychedelia prone to a lot of meh. The drugs really are needed to fill in the boredom, apparently.
The singles rule, the rest I could take or leave, but I enjoyed it. Very catchy writing, and the tracks are simple in a good way.
Good, un 3 o 4.
7/10 quizás? Qué sé yo loko, está bien.
Inizia fortissimo e finisce blues… ni
A few good songs, but a lot of filler.
Cream in my jeans. Not bad.
I like Cream...I'm just not "in like" with Cream.
Solid psychedelic rock album.
Solid block of blues rock. I feel like the production isn't helping this one as much as it should, it feels pretty thin in places where it should be slamming you with these chunky chords. Dad's everywhere are pumped for this one.
3,1
Good start meh rest. The blues/rock/psychodelic i dont like
Three very talented musicians, but only two great songs. A bit underwhelming
Some good songs, mostly the well known ones.
Some 60's classics, some OK stuff and some dreck. I've never been much of a Clapton fan. I'm feeling a 2.5 but I'll be generous and round up for those classics.
Liked it and knew some songs from it.
Fuzzy guitars, some good songs, some ok songs.
3 Not bad it was ok
A good but ultimately forgettable psych rock experience. Some absolute highlights but equally as many meh songs. Favs - Strange Brew - Sunshine of your love - SWLABR
Enjoyable, but didn’t really stand out to me.
Real 60s rock shit
Good but fuck Clapton
Great moments, good album
As if there wasn't enough already, it's time for some more 60s British rock. Cream was never the biggest band, but they garnered a pretty good reputation during the short few years of their formation, as well as the decades since. You know, aside from Eric Clapton being... Eric Clapton. With that said, this album is alright. It's not the most special album I've listened to, but it doesn't really have too many major faults for me to knock the album down much. The instrument playing is quite good. The sound is somewhat different in comparison to other bands of the time, which is rarely a bad thing. I lightly bashed Eric Clapton earlier, and while I stand by that when it comes to him as a person, he was a pretty good guitar player, I'll give him that. The wah-wah usage was apparently unique at the time, so that's cool. The writing doesn't stand out much, but it definitely isn't bad. Some of these songs are pretty cool. "Sunshine of your Love" is iconic for a reason, and the other songs are pretty decent as well. Overall, while this album doesn't stand out to me much, it nevertheless deserves its inclusion on this list for being decently significant for pop culture and also not bad. High 3/5.
It's a good album, a bit weird towards the end but overall a good listen.
I generally dig it, appreciate it, but not entirely in love - probably need more time with it!
Started strong - nice bluesy psychedelic music. Petered out towards the end
Easy going tiene un temazo
"Sunshine of Your Love" is iconic. The rest of the album was OK. The final track, "Mother's Lament" sounds like a bunch of British public school boys having a laugh, and not really in a good way. Also getting a Clapton album on MLK Jr. Day probably colored my opinion a bit.
Decent classic rock album Some Jams and good songs
First off, I have to admit that I have been too hard on this album in the past because I misheard a few important lyrics. I thought they were saying "Strange Brew, girl what's inside of you?" Now I see it's "kill what's inside of you." That is much cooler. Also, in SWLABR I thought it was "the vicar has a mustache" but its "the picture has a mustache," which is not great but at least it isn't so off-puttingly British as using the word "vicar" in a rock song. I think I also like this album a little less than I otherwise might because "Sunshine of Your Love", like Jefferson Airplane's "White Rabbit", has been overused in film and television to let the viewer know that the scene is set in the 1960's and possibly hippies and drugs are involved. That has made it harder for me to appreciate that song, and that song is definitely one of the tentpoles of the album, along with Strange Brew and Tales of Brave Ulysses. All in all, this is a pretty good album, but I think it is overhyped. There are some really great songs, but there are also some duds. I have no issue with it being included on a list of 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die, but I would not rank it as the 87th-greatest album of all time as VH1 did in 2001. Some other lists put it in the high 100's of greatest albums, which I think is getting closer to where I would put it, but still might be overrating it as far as I’m concerned.
****Stop Now**** and go watch the doc “Beware of Ginger Baker”. Regardless of how you feel abt the album or Baker’s drumming. Album started off strong w the only 2 songs I knew. This music had its place and time but no room for it on my playlist. Probably would be a solid 4 on shrooms b
Solid 3. Really love the old school guitar freedom and sound. Eric Clapton just fun to listen to
Tandon Scale Rating: 3.5 Standouts: Sunshine Of Your Love, Tales of Brave Ulysses, SWLABR, Take It Back Foot Notes: 1 Eric Clapton is so underrated 2 Sunshine of Your Love is a Guitar Hero classic Would I Listen Again: a majority of this album was groovy enough to put on Album Cover Rating: (1-5) 5
I kind of like Tales of Brave Ulysses
solid album with a monumental song.
meh
Half the album was really good, some was fine, and some I really wanted to skip. I enjoyed the band throughout but found the vocals to be weak on quite a few songs. "Take It Back" was my favorite. 3/5
“You’ve got the rainbow feel… but the rainbow has a beard” That lyric is so weird but I like this album. Not the best but worthy of a 6.5/10. Blues rock is not really a genre I listen to, but I liked it all the same.
Classic sounds with amazing guitar riffs. Not my favorite vocals though the lyrics are good.
Not bad, nice vibe to it. Worked as background music, not much more notable than that.
Classic although slightly generic. Overall not bad music, but nothing really stands out. Notable songs: Sunshine of my Love
"Bad" and "Smooth Criminal" are by far the best songs on this album. By far.
Good album, but not my favorite. It does have some great songs such as sunshine of you love, strange brew and take it back. Unfortunately, the psychedelic sounds of the 60's have been mocked so much that this album feels like a parody album. Also, to say that Cream is a blues band is a stretch. Cream is a 60's psychedelic band that played some blues music.
That guitar tone is still a benchmark. The vocal tone doesn’t hold up quite as well for me, but, still, what a sound.
Didn't like it - probably didn't listen as clearly, but not as interesting as I like
Handful of amazing tracks. At some point it gets repetitive, and it’s hard to believe how much Hendrix blew Clapton out of the water once he showed up.
Could go the rest of my life not listening to it
alright. starts off strong, gets boring in the middle, and ends ok.
Appreciate it but not my bag. 6/10
A mostly easy-listening psychedelic rock album with some classic tunes. And then there's Mother's Lament, which I felt was an off-putting way to end the album. That one song bumped the score down from a 4 to a 3 for me.
Some of the better dad rock for me. Will I listen to again: 30%
pretty good
Solid. Strange Brew is a jam
Soured to cream over time. Eric Clapton may be a good songwriter but he's a total twat. Ginger Baker fucking rocks
Bluesy psychedelic rock. My Dad loved it and always trusted his taste in music but Eric Claptons guitar playing has always left me cold. Never ceased to be amazed by Ginger Baker on drums though.
There is so much talent in this band, one of the most talented of all time and lot of time it almost seems wasted. Strange Brew, Sunshine of your Love, Tales of Brave Ulysses ads great, the rest often sound like really bad Beatles songs. But when they are good, they are great. 6.3/10
I enjoyed the album. I'd of course heard Strange Brew and Sunshine Of Your Love. I like SWLABR and Outside Woman Blues as well as Mother's Lament. 3 stars.
I don’t hate it, I don’t love it. It’s somewhere in between. I know it should be considered quite good given the members, but yea
Jack Bruce and Ginger Baker are so talented.
Generally speaking, I can't argue with the lineup - the group that probably prompted the creation of the term "Power Trio". Strange Brew and Sunshine of Your Love Deserves all the accolades, but this album didn't blow me away based on how much it's talked about (I'm hoping I will get a different result with Dark Side of the Moon but we'll see). I would say that the second half of the album overall is stronger than the first half (the first 2 songs excepted). All the songs from Tales of Brave Ulysses through Take It Back are all good, but SWLABR is my favorite.
Listened Before? No Back to Clapton we go. Some good ole psych-infused blues rock. Amazingly busy album cover that looks like the late 60s throwing up. They waste no time in letting Clapton's blues guitar take center stage on Strange Brew. Serviceable, if forgettable song. Mixing is okay though the drums sound very distant. Sunshine of Your Love is a classic jam. One of the most recognizable guitar / bass riffs of all time. Great, more throaty vocals that always make me think of Hendrix. Tales of Brave Ulysses is a jam, as is SWLABR. The latter being more a more energetic and guitar-forward. All around, fine psychedelic blues rock album with a few notable standouts and solid production throughout. Not among my favorites from this era, but it is very alright. I would say this is a middle of the road 3 / 5 for me. Songs Added to Playlists: - Sunshine of your Love (Sunny-vibes)
Sunshine of your love and strange brew are jams. I'd give the album 3.5 stars.
Perfectly fine album, but for some reason Cream just isn't for me. I don't mind listening to it at all but I wouldn't choose to.
First two songs are absolute jams. As is Tales of Brave Ulysses. The rest is pretty solid but nothing to blow your socks off. Going to give a solid middle 3.
good songs exactly what i expected coming into the album
1967. A few great tracks, aside from that about every other song was pretty good. Has some Jimi Hendrix influence I thought.
Good vibe, not many hits but good songs overall.
Yeah yeah, Clapton is God and all that. Sure. But where's the love for my man Bruce? Seriously, I feel like we hear so little about how Jack WAS this band; at least, he was responsible for most of what's worth listening to with Cream. Anyway, I don't have a lot to say with this one. It's probably their best record, but I always liked Wheels of Fire more.
kinda spooky, also some nice blues
Solid Cream. (cheese?)
Pretty decent all around, but it sounds *so* of its era. The quirky British-ness of it all gets a little overbearing.
Always a fan of this genre
A definitive album for Psychadelic rock and of course with Clapton it's with a blues base. So, of course the songs are simple but solid structurally and the guitar and such are perfect for what they are going for. Songs range in quality greatly. Sometimes their voices bug the hell out of me. Heh, memory of Strange Brew. Take off, eh. Oh yeah, Sunshine of your Love! Forgot. One of those first songs to learn on guitar. Probably would not listen to casually often but I would not be instantly reaching for the off button either.
3 great songs and a bunch that sound like typical 60's psychedelic bullshit
Some classics on here with decent guitar tones.
3/5 - enjoyed this album
Looking at the 3 people making up cream you would think they would be able to create something better than this which, whilst decent, didn't blow me away with the few good songs (SWLABR, Tale of brave Ulysses & sunshine of your love) being greatly outnumbered. The mix for this album has always sat weirdly with me too. I know Ginger is one of the best drummers ever but he didn't need to be so present in the mix. High 2/low 3.
Ginger Baker’s weird snare tuning and signature Tom sound. He also sings a song on this album, which was possibly not a great idea. Everyone was under the influence here, including the producer, how else to explain “Mother’s Lament 😭” The best songs on the album are the ones you’re familiar with - Sunshine of Your Love, Tales of Brave Ulysses, Strange Brew. Which are great. Except for these standouts, it feels a little low-effort. Clapton was beloved back when this came out, but his style never touched me all that much. And apparently he was just as much of an a*hole in his early years as later (citation: A History of Rock Music in 500 Songs, episode 126 - For Your Love by the Yardbirds, Andrew Hickey) so anything he could say now to turn people against him is pretty irrelevant now. Ultimately for me there’s a lot to love here (Sunshine of Your Love, Jack Bruce’s falsetto) and a lot to just forget (Blue Condition, bearded rainbows).
Strong 3/5. Sunshine of your love a highlight
Two great songs. The whole album sounds very epically psychedelic but the lyrics are not great. It's maybe too much of its time to relate to. Also Eric Clapton, blech.
This record was good, but nothing extraordinary.
I'm sure this was a landmark album in its time, but it was just OK for me. Some good bluesy rock
yeah its psych rock. i get it already. theres about 900 psych rock albums on this fucking list. give me something new.
Rock. Blues
I like: Strange Brew Take It Back Mother's Lament
Good stuff. Sunshine of your love, tales of brave ulysses, and SWLABR are all classics, rest are kinda filler. Still a fun album.
Didn't impress me too much. If I want to listen to a british rock album from this era, I prefer Led Zeppelin
A really great album that I hadn't listened to since I was a teenager. Solid, with some classics. An easy listen whilst working.
2.72
Not bad music (poor recording quality or source for the Spotify stream).
Fine album! Just not much of a fan
Some iconic 60s music here, know and enjoy this album.
Wanted to like it so much but alas it’s fine.
Sunshine of Your Love, Dance the Night Away and Take it Back are great, but the rest is uninteresting, mediocre assembly of songs.
That's some serious dirty hippy vibes. A couple songs were alright, but it's not my style of psychedelic 60s music.
Sunshine of Your Love is really only the song that I enjoyed from this album. It does have a strong cohesive sound and I think it holds up well. But it didn't stand out a lot for me. Decent album, would not mind listening again.
overall a solid album
It's fine.
Wasn’t a huge fan until We’re Going Wrong. I like the less psychedelic songs
I liked it, I think Sunshine of your Love is definitely one of the best songs in the world, and perhaps Clapton's best, but the album was a bit too monotonous for me. I enjoyed it and I wouldn't mind listening to it again, but maybe in small doses
When i started the album my first thought was "oh this is some Clapton shit, isnt it." Didn't hate it as much as i thought I would, all things considered. One of those considered things is Eric Clapton though, and the other is repetitive blues riffing, two big "nopes" for me.
Quintessential 60s classic rock sound
Unsurprisingly, great guitar work, but a lot of tracks felt quite same-y to me. Nothing I mind listening to but didn't blow me away by any means. Favorite Track: Sunshine of Your Love
Sunshine of Your Love is still a banger. Eric Clapton is an antivax asshole. 3.5 rounded down because of Clapton ruining his own legacy.
I'm more of a fan of the slower Cream songs like World of Pain and there aren't very many of those. The guitar throughout is great. I refuse to believe Mother's Lament isn't a spoof. I'd probably rate this 2.5 stars if I could.
It was fine! Nothing really stood out to me, but I found it enjoyable. The last song was unique, but not in a bad way, just unexpected.
Ima dobrih stvari i onih koje nisu
Chill vibes, though wasn’t entirely my scene
It’s cream
Great album from the 60s
Average. That's all.
This is a perfectly adequate blues rock album that isn’t mixed very well. Clapton is Clapton, and Ginger Baker’s drum sound sucks. Also, Jack Bruce can’t sing. Not terribly annoying, except for that one song about the poor baby in the fake accent. Probably I should give it a relisten but my stomach for this type of crap is pretty limited. Strange Brew is a good single and Sunshine of Your Love blah blah blah. ToBU doesn’t really hold up though, does it?
A classic this time. Even though it has some individual hits, the whole album is not very special in my opinion, however it has a nice aura and it is ahead of its time when it comes to rock music. Overall really good experience and a good listen. (74%)
Ok. Has some pretty decent tracks, and good bass.
It’s pretty decent, but I prefer the music this album inspired (zeppelin, Hendrix, etc). Better than average, not quite good. 3.5 stars.
Nice blues rock
Couple of recognisable bangers.
Not my favorite style
Great guitar jams. Maybe I should look deeper, but lyrics strike me as trying too hard to be deep. Hear some Robert Johnson influence near the end. Plus a Scottish tune?
Decent. Some good songs. Excellent rhythm section. Eric Clapton is an asshole.
6/10 highlights: sunshine of your love, tales of brave ulysses
Fun psychedelic rock
73/100
“Sunshine of Your Love” brought the nostalgia, and the rest was alright. Maybe I made a poor choice listening to these on bike rides, but I couldn’t listen a second time on the way back; I needed something faster and heavier.
Ok, without even listening this album gets 3 stars for the first two tracks but after that point it didn't really take me anywhere else. I'm a big fan of Clapton but I think it's clear why I was only familiar with 2 of the songs. I would listen again but I think I'd rather just pull out Crossroads and listen to those versions.
Bluesey, sometimes groovy, obviously great guitar jamming (showing my ignorance, I didn't realize Clapton had anything but a solo career.) This is good. Favorites: Strange Brew, Tales of Brave Ulysses, Outside Woman Blues (only for that electric guitar lick and accompanying bass.)
This was hit-and-miss for me, but not bad.
The mixing of psychedelic rock and blues felt unnatural during my first listen. But that is my problem. I was trying to impose my will on something that was finite. My favorite tracks were Tales of Brave Ulysses and Sunshine of Your Love. Luckily those two tracks are on a greatest hits collection.
Little bit overrated I think, not bad though
I love Sunshine of Your Love, the rest of the album is pretty good. It makes me sad that Eric is so talented but also an anti-vaxxer.
I get why this album has the reputation it has. I think for a lot of people this is one of the first flags planted in psych rock mountain. My biggest issue with it is the production. There are tons of cool riffs and grooves, all of which are kept at a very tame volume so that Jack Bruce can sing in a bell clear tone over the whole thing. I think that’s what bothers me so much about it. Whoever had the final say felt like boring 60s faux psychedelic lyrics were much more important than any of the instruments. Seriously this thing is a bingo card for dumb cliche psychedelia. Idk I have very mixed feelings about this record, but it remains a classic.
Overall disappointing for something regarded as such a classic. There were some good and bad though. The good: I liked how minimalist it was for something so rooted in psychedelia. Generally bands will have tons of overdubs and layers to make things sound bigger. Here there were the distinct three-piece band parts with usually just two vocals over them (Clapton and Bruce), with just the occasional guitar lead tracked over it at parts. It was a nice change of pace from what I usually imagine in the genre. The instrumentation was great, and most of the back half REALLY rips after a pretty okay front half. Clapton is the legend in the band but Baker and Bruce in the rhythm section so some heavy lifting (especially Ginger Baker, such a unique tom-heavy driving style out of him). The bad: I just don’t fuck with Clapton as a vocalist. He really brings it down for me. Jack Bruce takes lead for most of the back half and knocks it out of the park. The only other reprieve we get are two songs with Baker on lead which are WAY worse. The other thing is the mixing which Mister Tunes mentioned in their review. It’s very quiet and underwhelming, even though there are some heavy backbeats getting churned out as I mentioned before. So yeah, overall glad I listened, but not what I expected nor what it should be capable of.
This one is a classic of psychedelic and blues rock. Its combination is what makes this thing outstanding and for historical reasons, every music nerd should've listened to this. I do say though that there's more interesting stuff from alle the people involved. And, yes, Eric Clapton also did some more interesting work in other capacities.
eric clapton is so unbelievably overrated. That being said, some fun songs on here of course, he wasn't famous for NO reason. I think the novelty of this sound was one of the biggest things it had going for it and that most of this album is a little boring
Some classics on there, but not sure the album as a whole is up there as on of the 'greatest of all time'.
Liked the first 2 songs then got less into it.
Psychedelic vibes but also some songs were whack Similar to Beatles I guess but also completely different
I don’t think this album is bad, I just don’t think it’s for me. When I’m listening to their music, I just feel like it’s missing that extra, something! Like if they just adding one more thing, this could have been a fantastic song but instead it feels like they said they were happy at “Good” but they really should have strived for “Great”
3 I’m not usually much of a Clapton man, but I enjoyed this more than I thought I would - blues meets psychedelia, and it’s a solid combination. My reaction to each song went from about as low as a “meh” to as high as a “that was pretty good” - which nets out to about a 3 from me. Sunshine of Your Love is of course a classic and one I knew I would enjoy going into this (shoutout to Guitar Hero III and School of Rock), but there were a couple of surprises for me here as well, including Tales of Brave Ulysses (which admittedly sounds just like White Room) and SWLABR (which admittedly has a really dumb name if you look up the acronym). Not much else here left much of a lasting impression, but there was nothing that ever broke up the flow of the record at any point - except for maybe the last track, Mother’s Lament. It was kind of a goofy conclusion, but I really can’t say I hated it - feels like the kind of thing that would be a hidden track if this album had come out 25 years later. Not life-changing, but enjoyable classic vinyl.
In the moments I even heard the subtle 'The Doors' sound. Very primal rock with great vocals.3.5/5.
Alright
I enjoyed this one, …Ulysses and Take it Back (which might be the first song with a harmonica I didn’t instantly hate) being the stand outs. I figured Mothers Lament was a secret track or something that I’d have happily kept secret though (I could look this up but won’t)
Obligatory fuck Eric Clapton. 3/5
Already heard
I don’t like Cream and even though this is a classic making bluesy riffs wind into catchy choruses, it has a frosty coldness to it. That 60s fuzz on here, so often imitated afterwards, is quite draining after a while. Finally given this record is by that arch racist Clapton it’s sometimes hard to get out of my head his clear skill from his vile views.
Feel transported back to the 60s. Sparked the desire to rebel against the system by gathering a bunch of unwashed shaggy-haired long-term students to sit around on the floor with, consuming God knows what from Serenity's garden. 3.5/5
Naar de ene helft kan ik dagelijks luisteren. De andere helft is leuk om het een keer gehoord te hebben. Wil eigenlijk 3,5 sterren geven
Enjoyable
Fuck Eric Clapton.
Kinda cringe bit it's got sunshine of your love
Top 3 songs: 1. Sunshine of Your Love 2. Take It Back 3. Strange Brew
Some Blues bangers but fairly repetitive. 6.93/10.00
Early Clapton and some heavy psychedelic rock. More rock than psychedelic but this is a pretty solid album with one of the most known guitar riffs with sunshine of your love. This was an easy album to listen to several times through and the balance between psych and rock was what made it fun and unique. 7.3/10
Sunshine of your Love is foundation in classic Rock, but the rest of this album doesn't do much for me. I find the sounds very repetitive in a disengaging way.
Other then Sunshine of Your Love, nothing especially stood out. It was good psychedelic rock and a fun listen, but that's all it was
A pretty solid bluesy psychedelic rock album with a great rhythm section and really strong vocals from Jack Bruce. Clapton’s vocals are less appealing and kind of ruin Strange Brew for me which is a shame because it’s an otherwise brilliant song. It does get very samey after a while and the songwriting is kind of mid for a lot of the tracks, though the weird music-hall-esque Mother’s Lament is an unexpected and fun (if somewhat disconcerting) way to close things out
Was ok musically
Imagine being in high school and a friend suits down next to you and without any context asks "do you like Cream?" Only to find out that this is what he was talking about. My answer is "it's ok." Clapton is a great guitarist, but as a whole, this misses the mark. It's definitely not bad, just not something I'd return to. 3/5
Nice to hear the Strongbow advert song in context. Glad I listened but probably won’t listen again.
the taco bell mild sauce of psychedelic rock
Rocking, psychedelic, a bit mopey in the middle, but also weird and silly.
Powerful toms on the drums. 60s aesthetic. Clapton kills it on the guitar with great blues riff. Loved: Sunshine of your love, swlabr, strange brew. Hated: mothers lament
Perhaps being Cream's well-known album, including hits such as Sunshine of Your Love, and Strange Brew among others, I was expecting an album full of late 60's psychedelic bangers, and while this was mostly true, it wasn't that much of a banger to my ears. Sure, there were such songs that I like including the obvious hits and the underrated We're Going Wrong, which showcased drummer Ginger Baker's chops, I was not a huge fan of the rest of the album, as it really didn't captivate my attention much. Was honestly kind of disappointed.
Great tracks - enjoyed the psychedelia and the Music Hall tribute Mother’s Lament made me chortle. Couple of absolute classics - Sunshine of your love and Strange Brew. Not one I would want to put on repeat but I appreciate the range and diversity of talent.
Standout: Sunshine of Your Love.
Yes, powerful and they were obviously the most advanced/skilled purveyors of British power blues, and one could listen to Ginger Baker all day, but there's a dullness here, likely a result of it being a bit too one-note and too overdetermined (primarily as a showcase for Claptonian riffing).
it was ok
it was ok its like a 3.5 stars, i gave it 2 listens and i can see how this would be culturally significant but it was not very significant to me..
It was alright, I don't think it was really better or worse from the last album but unlike Beastie Boys it didn't make me wanna relisten, this one just didnt feel anything super special to me. There is few songs I'll continue listening. 6/10
Heard before. I randomly hear that one part of Outside Woman Blues in my head sometimes (cooking your food, doing your dirt, cooking your food, doing your dirt...). Sunshine of Your Love is like the guitar center version of the jazz lick. + Sunshine Of Your Love + We're Going Wrong + Outside Woman Blues
Pretty dang mid. didn't hate it though
Such a talented band. So few top tier tracks from them though.
"Sunshine of your life" the best, most popular song on the album. Very psychedelic sound and not bad at all. The album cover art probably matches the sound perfectly. 7/10.
Favorite song: “Tales of Brave Ulysses”.
It's alright. Kind of floaty and jangly. I like the playing on this, but not so sure about the main vocals. It sounds like he's being gently haunted by a ghost throughout. "ooOooo a ghhooOOooost"
Hit & Miss
I really liked the beginning but it seemed to unravel by the end. In a kind of funny way HAHHA
It was alright. Psychedelic rock isn’t a huge favorite of mine, but it’s not bad. 3.5/5
Here we go again with more classic rock featuring Eric Clapton, literal human trash. I have a bone to pick with a song from this album. It sounds so absurd that it can’t possibly be true, but it is. In 2016, I lived in a not-bad-but-not-nice apartment building for a year. My next door neighbour didn’t seem to work and spent all day, every day playing his electric guitar. I’m talking starts around 9-10am and shuts ‘er down around 9-10pm. Every single day, at least when I was home to hear him. It wasn’t so loud that it was disruptive, but I could hear it clearly in my apartment. The problem? He literally only played “Sunshine of Your Love.” That’s it, just that song, over and over again for 12 hours a day, every single day. No other song. Just that stupid guitar refrain ad nauseam. He seemed to only take breaks to smoke a cigarette on his balcony, which would blow into my apartment. Obviously, the song is beyond ruined for me at this point, and that’s saying nothing of my sanity. The album was okay but I feel a little burnt out on classic rock lately.
Sunshine of your love. Classic Hippie
Shout out Eric C. I like this album. it’s an easy 3
Sunshine of Your Love was the only one that really stuck out but the rest were still a solid listen
This album is not meant for the sober mind. Pretty similar-sounding songs throughout and not much really stuck out other than Sunshine Of Your Love.
If I liked psychedelic rock more I know I’d enjoy this more. Nothing but respect for Jack Bruce, Ginger Baker and Eric Clapton, but overall I thought this album was just fine. I needed more jams like Sunshine of Your Love to bump it up a notch.
It was aight. Kinda short.
3.5
Bluesy, psychedelic rock. Just not my thing, however, a few good tracks I enjoyed. 3/5
prefer wheels on fire but not bad. clapton is a fuckin schmendrick but i cant deny his ability, in general the term Supergroup is rarely more apt for sheer collective power
Good
Great stuff, can tell it’s Clapton on the guitar
This album gave me its dark surprise. I didn't really have an opinion of Cream going into this; psy-rock isn't really my thing. About halfway through, psy-rock still isn't really my thing. You can't watch your wife and your outside womens too. Well okay. Yeah, it's gonna have to be quite the psy-rock album for me to get on board. This wasn't it. Erica: I liked it.
Wasn’t too familiar with Cream besides a few songs. I didn’t love any of these songs, didn’t hate any of them, either. It’s just sorta there. Screw Eric Clapton, though, and I’m sure Ginger Baker wasn’t a great guy, either.
This was aight, rock done in a somewhat interesting way with twinges of the psychedelic in there. Ngl though, did not wow me. It's fine, certainly prefer it to the stuff that's purely a blues rip off. This is only MOSTLY a blues rip off. It's an improvement, 3 leaning 3.5.
Heavy guitar
I feel like I should like this more. Just not into the genre.
este album me dio ganas de conprarle lsd a un jipi en denver mientras uso unos levis 684
Was hoping to like this more. Overall it was fine but a lot of the songs just felt like they were missing something.
The first 2 songs are great, but it's a little uneven after that. That said, I'm sure this was groundbreaking when it first came out
Sunshine of your love and some noodley hippy bullshit
Cream goes from blues to psychedelic. Not the best Cream album, not the best Clapton album. Highlights are Strange Brew, Sunshine of Your Love, and Tales of Brave Ulysses (the most 60's of 60's songs). I felt like I should like it, but phychadelic rock was so short lived (and weird), I could not like it enough.
Had a lot of ups and down. Liked how short of an album it was. Sunshine of your love and take it back we’re the two biggest high points. Wish it had more blues undertones
66/100 no songs were over 7/10 cool L/R stereo stuff great bass lines much corniness lots of dumb lyrics nice mix of lack of urgency style for faster beats
a fairly low three. some great great songs but overall not amazing. drumming and guitar was so good though
nice first listen songs: strange brew sunshine of your love world of pain tales of brave ulysses swalbr were going wrong mothers lament idk, songs are ok, but also not that great. 5/10 second listen was a bit better. 7/10
Good
One hit song, I really don't think the song writing is great, but maybe I don't get music.
that cockney shit at the end has just made me wretch.
Jack Bruce's bass playing on this album is brilliant. It bounces along, keeping all the mystical hippy shit tight, stopping it from straying into never, never fairy land. There are some strong songs, but even at 38 minutes, there's not quite enough to make it outstanding throughout
Right down the middle I get why it’s here, didn’t blow me away
Decent, not in love with it, but my grow on me.
Starting with the trippy-laden drumming and short-bluesy guitar licks of Strange Brew; it’s a perfect toast to start this psychedelic album. Work of Pain sounds like a backdrop of a steady rain that is ultimately comforting within its melancholic theme. Tales of Brave Ulysses, SWLABR, and We’re Going Wrong we’re deep cut standouts to me among my listening experience. Oh, and HA! Mother’s Lament is fantastic. Overall, though, I personally rank it as a 3 out of 5 stars album. It’s certainly enjoyable, I think I prefer other bands like Big Brother, Grateful Dead, CSN&Y, and Jimi of similar style when listening to Cream.
First few tracks are brilliant, but tails off
Big fan of Jack Bruce and enjoy Cream's tracks but thought they never made a good album. I may have listened to this once in the past but not compelled to listen until compelled by the 1001 albums generator now. Very dated songs, ending with the trivial very 60's Mother's Lament. Rock stars are not funny, neither, until Bruce-Brown hit their stride, were they great songwriters. Very patchy, with only Sunshine Of Your Love standing up as a classic. Strange Brew is interesting as ever but not very listenable. Some of the songs were better on the live albums, like Sitting on Top of the World, which drags here. Nice cover, I always wanted, but now realise why I don't own this album.
I’ll have to revisit but while I liked the tone of the album and the soundscape, I enjoyed the pieces used more than the outcome for the most part. There’s real creativity involved in the album, but it doesn’t quite come together in a way that’s transformative for me. A great thick sound, but I was still left wanting more and feeling like ideas could have been further expanded upon. Faves: Strange Brew, Tales of Brave Ulysses, SWLABR, Take It Back
Soupy.
Nice and bluesy
I was really excited for this one, I know their biggest hit "Sunshine of Your Love" is on this album, and that is a fantastic song with a legendary riff. However I was a bit disappointed. I will give this album another chance in the future.
Tricky one. It's greater the bluesier and Kinkier it ventures, but it just doesn't live up to the hype.
Listened Before? N I was familiar with Sunshine of Your Love, that's it. Sunshine is so overplayed I have to avoid it. This is a pretty good acid rock album, but I found some of the themes immature and lazy, and also - Eric Clapton is still a massive piece of shit. Glad I listened, I'll never come back. Added to Library? N Songs added to playlist: Strange Brew
Good album with some standout tracks (but also a bit of dross!) The iconic 'Sunshine of Your Love' is a standout mostly because I love the opening hook from the film 'School of Rock'. 'Tales of Brave Ulysses' is another standout track - although is that how you say his name?? 'Blue Condition' was a lowpoint, but still listenable track. The less said about 'Mother's Lament' the better... Overall, average to good.
A decent rock album but nothing too standout. 3/5. Favorite Track: Outside Woman Blues

mid
I'd rate it below solo Clapton, but still fine.
Sunshine of Your Love aside, this is just self regarding nonsense. Three musicians showing off.
Solid psych rock from that era. Our every Clapton project, I’ve definitely preferred cream. Really good songs present on this album, even though at times the sound may be repetitive. Even though I’ve soured on Eric Clapton in recent years, can’t deny that this a very good album. 3/5
I dunno, I understand why it’s important to Music History, but I get bored of most of these tracks halfway through. I liked Tales of Brave Ulysses, though. Fuck Eric Clapton.
Good.
One of those bands you know of but didn't really know you knew until Sunshine Of Your Love kicks in.
Mal etwas rockiger dann wieder entspannt und fast psychedelisch. 3,5 Sterne
I really love some songs on this album, but there are also some songs where I can't really decide if I like them or if they are annoying.
Dat begon lekker.
Toffe plaat hor
3 Stoned
Psychedelic rock, full steam ahead. If someone would ask you what "psychedelic" means in music, just show them this album - it's not the greatest, but definitely one of first of this kind and pulling all the string of the genre. You can hear it straight away in the opening song "Strange Brew". The guitar work on this track is just amazing, who needs drugs, when you can listen to it on the loop? But that's not everything, although drums help accenting the psychedelic parts, bass melody is extremely groovy and keeps you interested in the song. I would 100% call it a highlight of the track, and maybe the whole album? Unfortunately, I'm not a big fan of the vocal on this single and record in general. High voice of Clapton doesn't song really exciting, and although it fits the theme of the light and fun melody, it's not something I would like to listen to more often. "Sunshine of your Love" keeps a very high level of quality on the album, being a very excellent song, with even more recognisable melody on guitars and bass. Claptons voice is much better here, high class. But moving on, the quality drops, and especially side b of the record is hard to listen. There was nothing special in there that I could point at, it's rather disappointing after such a good intro to the album.
Este álbum me da muchas vibras diferentes a la vez, aunque tiene muy buenas canciones otras no son de mi tipo, aún así me parece un buen álbum a bit raro, si pudiera le doy un 3.8 o 3.5, pero no puedo, entonces un 3
I like Cream's hit songs, so I had higher hopes for this. But the majority of the album kind of just sounded like standard 60's Brit rock. So overall, just ok.
This was hard. I’m not a big fan of this type of music. Need more prominent beat pattern. Also I couldn’t remember any of songs, they all sounded same to me. Maybe I need to listen more of this to understand it.
Chill album!
The non-GH tracks just sound like filler at this point + EC & GB need to be held accountable for what they turned into.
I listened to roughly half this album drunk on moonshine, but I’m making a concerted effort to be more critical. This was a good album and I would listen to it again, but most of it didn’t stand out. Further, I don’t like Eric Clapton because he’s awful even though he’s a great guitarist.
Its mixing has the Beatles problem where the sound of any singular instrument is only ever in one ear. This creates a distracting off-balance that takes away from the music. Other than that, the sound is good, albeit a little slow for my tastes. If all the songs were just slightly quicker feeling, this would rate higher. Favorite track: Sunshine of Your Love
it is funny how when you grow up with a famous song like "sunshine of your love", you don't think too deeply about the song until you're prompted to like in this project. i didn't realize how psychedelic rock "sunshine" was, nor did i pay attention to how the guitar (clapton) and drums (baker) work so well together. "sunshine" is definitely the biggest hit of this album fifty-five years later, and what stood out to me was how the album was so very full of psychedelia. "sunshine" is a great song, yes, but this album flows so well. the psychedelic rock genre makes the whole listening journey smooth. but of course with a genre like that, there are bound to be some songs that are just too weird. i hope eric clapton doesn't take that to heart.
Tofkes
Sunshine of your love stands out a mile on here, liked the last 2 songs too “take it back” and “mothers lament”, last song jumps out as very different to the rest
Many fantastic colors Makes me feel so good
Some big hitters on there. Early Clapton.
Prefs: Strange Brew, Sunshine of Your Love, Tales of Brave Ulysses, SWLABR, We're Going Wrong, Take It Back Moins pref: Blue Condition
Some decent tracks, but not amazing.
not a genre i'm familiar with. it isn't awful but its not good either. 3.
Woah, psychadellic babay, yeah! Sunshine of your Love is a guitar hero classic so it was nice to hear what songs surrounded it on this album. Predictably very similar and with the cover art and album title, this felt like a trippy visit into the late 60's.
very nice, i like the song where it went like this
not for me
Miren, otra vez Clapton acá. Sunshine of Your Love es una favorita mía, pero no sé si el disco completo sea totalmente de mi agrado.
It was fine, fun for the first 4 songs but then it starts to get kinda same-y since it really has one style and sticks to it.
One great song and that’s about it
Good
Strange Brew and Sunshine are both great. The rest did not leave much of an impression. I can tell that it's "good" but that doesn't mean I "like" it.
I get why this is such an esteemed album from the 60s. I love the song “Strange Brew.” I understand why “Sunshine of Your Love” is important, although truth be told it has never been one of my favorites. I am glad to have listened to this album, and it is interesting to hear the blues turn psychedelic, but in the end I don’t see me listening to this too often.
ganz ok, viel Blues
Good album
The plodding, deliberate pace of Sunshine is married with eyelash-fluttering instrument tones, poetic lyrics, and flashes of tempo change. The rest of the album isn't so much... so I can see why Sunshine is the standout. The rest is just ok, but important historically.
Cream has always been pretty underwhelming to me, despite Clapton's guitar work.
Probably the only Clapton effort I actually enjoy. The first side is some killer blues rock. The second half loses its way into jammy filler which means I rarely flip the record over an listen to it
this was so chill, really nice music to relax to
The rest of "Disraeli Gears" unfortunately stands squarely in the shadow of "Sunshine of Your Love." That song is so epic and iconic that living up to it would be hard, but nothing else here really comes close. It's also the song where Jack Bruce's voice sounds best, and avoids overdoing the higher register. "SWLABR" is the next best song with Bruce's vocals, and it's decent enough but they must have been on some stuff when they wrote that. The Clapton-led "Strange Brew" and "Outside Woman Blues" are good, and more of his blues influence might have improved the album (Cream was apparently moving away from blues and towards more psychedelia.) And that's about all that's worthwhile. Ginger Baker may be a terrific drummer, but he should've stayed away from songwriting and singing - "Blue Condition" was awful. And the less said about the closing "Mother's Lament" the better.
2 really excellent classic rock standards (Sunshine of your Love and Tales of Brave Ulysses), 4 really good bluesy tracks (Strange Brew, SWLABR, Outside Women Blues, Take it Back), 3 really meh tracks that were too psychedelic for me (World of Pain, Dance the Night Away, We're Going Wrong), and 2 real stinkers (Blue Condition, Mother's Lament) leave me squarely in 3.5 territory. Sadly, I expected more.
I’m very disappointed in this album. Not because it’s terrible but rather because I had high expectations. Sunshine Of Your Love is awesome. Tales Of Brave Ulysses is good. The rest is so so. The last track is weird AF.
An obvious classic, though the music never especially impressed me
Ok
I guess I just don’t love psychedelic rock that much.
Pretty solid, more variation on album than expected
one or two rockers.
Some really good songs. Some OK songs. And some really bad songs that almost ruin the whole thing. Wish I could give 3.5 but can't so 3.
Eric Clapton back again (fuck him)
It's fine.
