Reviews (page 5 of 8)

This clearly isn’t his best. 10 min songs? Come on, Neil.

decent album, couple of really catchy songs and nothing bad

The first Neil Young album I got I said I wasn’t a Neil Young guy but liked it, last album I got I said I was becoming a bigger fan, and after this one I guess I am a Neil Young guy now (3.5/5)

That’s me over halfway for Mr Young’s albums on this list.

Very strong album for Neil.

3.5. Bottom of Neil Youngs top tier by my ears. Some good, great, and a lil monotonous at times.

I'm always praying that I've listened to my last Neil Young album on this list, and am always disappointed. Another basic-ass boomer rock album. 2.5/5 -> 3/5

就那样

I like these songs, but I don't like his voice.

Neil young

Never heard this album before. It's a good album, and the band sounds great. But the songs don't seem to resonate with me like the best Neil Young songs do. "It's only someone else's potatoes if you're pickin' someone else's patch"

Not one of my favorite Neil Young albums. Kind of an interesting choice to include in the list.

Last few songs were good, others were a bit forgetful. 3/5

A lot more rock, and a lot less folky than the other albums I've heard from him. I am liking it, but nothing has stood out to me so far. It was fine.

I find this deeply generic, Neil can and.has done better

love ya neil but no thanks…

Kinda bounced off me

Stoked to check this album out. Only listened to some of his tunes. not all. Pretty blues-rockin. A little too mellow for me. I respect it. Don't know much off this record so far. Pretty good

Bigger fan of the instrumentals than the singing.

Lots of jangly guitar, not his best songwriting

Grandpa Neil !!!!! Really good record, has some long jams and memorable guitar lines.

I rip on Neil Young all the time because the previous couple albums I’ve heard from him were just slow and whiny, so I was impressed to hear him sound more rock like and strong voiced. It was a nice album however a little too long for me and I also didn’t click with it much. There’s nothing blatantly horrible or even bad about it I think I just found it boring.

Funny how polarizing Neil is - ppl that don't like him REALLY don't like him. I cut down the middle - he's fine, some of his songs are absolutely all-time epic - but his rock stuff is often just unremarkable to me. I don't dislike any of it here, but in the end it sometimes feels like just a barn full of I-IV-V-vi type progressions with some nice harmonies. Harmless and nice. Also Neil might be the most annoying guitar player of alltime jfc. OK - it's easy to knock things if you want to but there are a lot of positives here too: it's a good sounding record, very garage-band with good production. And my initial thought about the simplistic progressions ...while sort of true, it's the subtleties in this music that puts it a bit past something mundane. e.g. the harmonies aren't Simon & Garfunkel but they're very distinct and absolutely add to what could otherwise potentially be plodding songs - e.g. "Mansion on the Hill" I think it's utterly impossible at times (always?) to separate the art from the artist in terms of historical impact - like, that's an obvious statement but I have thought a number of times on this exercise - if this particular/exact album was recorded by Gordon Jump and the Turkey Drop would it still be considered classic? 6/10 3 stars.

Did you know they still made late 70s albums in the early 90s?

It’s ok

Very mid

Run of the mill Neil Young album. Decent

Lots of neil young on here

It was good, but not quite my thing

Remember the dance sequence in the sunny high school reunion episode where Fat Mac just rips and tears shirtless? Pretty much what this album sounds like.

Isn't my favorite Neil Young, and I won't likely gravitate towards it when I'm feeling like a Neil fix.

6/10. Somewhat underwhelming, and not as interesting as I thought that it would be. I prefer "Harvest". :)

Not a bad album to listen to.

Not bad, not great. Distinct impression they were steaming drunk while recording Farmer John. Too much guitar for me. What's with the last note of every track being 30 seconds long?

His voice isn't pleasant in this album. Crazy Horse did a good job though.

Not bad

this album might have the purest “drinking a beer during a dusky summer evening” vibe I’ve ever heard. There’s nothing groundbreaking going on, but with the strength of the guitar performance there doesn’t really need to be. The guitar shines on every track but rarely references the exact same timbre or style from another track. Vocals were flawed but still work and song subject matter had more depth than I expected. Listened to: walking through prospect park. Favorite tracks: White Line, Days That Used to Be, Mother Earth (Natural Anthem)

Compare to other Neil Young albums, there's something lacking here. Part of it is that the tracks are definitely too long for a non-live album. I felt like, with the longer track lengths (over 6 minutes on average per song), the "good stuff" was diluted and hidden underneath a thick layer of relatively empty jamming on lead guitar. The vocals, while fine, are not up to Young standard. And the strongest track (narrowly), F*!#in' Up, is solid, but barely more memorable than the other songs in the setlist. That being said, the atmosphere is pretty badass, and I assume the lyrics were strong too (I wasn't paying much attention to them). Even for some of his worst material, you can't go (too) wrong with ol' Neil. 3/5 Key tracks: Country Home, F*!#in' Up, Love to Burn, Mansion on the Hill

It was ok

Neil Young’s voice is grating.

It’s okay… perfectly fine country/rock/grunge. Without anything to standout.

At a few points I thought it was OK

Country Rock

Kind of what I expected. Good album

This is the 5th Neil Young album I've gotten and really this wasn't needed. Did I really need to listen to 2 10 minute long jams from a 90s Neil Young? No. No I didn't.

Not his best album. Sounded like a lot of Neil.

Rocking

There is a lot of Neil young on this list. I've started to warm to his acoustic stuff but this was the first with crazy horse. I'm still a bit meh about him to be honest. This was still full of the Americana songwriting chops you'd expect, but his voice is still thin and the band are fine.

Am I hearing things or is Neil having FUN on this album? Some of these tunes sound like pop songs. Maybe there's a little bit of Matthew Sweet grunge-power-pop going on?

Listened to most of this but there wasn't much differentiation between songs, so I feel like I got the message.

His reputation precedes him but I was a bit underwhelmed at times.

Like it, although the songs get too long towards the end 3/5

Pretty much the same in every song, nothing really special about this, but it has a bit of potential, just a bit.

Moderately fun dad garage rock. Absolutely on board with the insanely long guitar drone at the end of F*!#in' Up though. Favourite tracks: White Line, F*!#in' Up, Love to Burn.

Liked like one song but I could see how people would love this 6.5/10

It’s good! I like Grunge Neil Young. There were no standouts, it’s just a fun record to listen to, clearly just a good time to make, low effort but that’s his vibe, and I’m at the point where I’ll probably get a kick out of anything he does. 3/5

Tylsin Neil Young tähän asti, biisit ovat liian samasta muotista, Youngille tuttu saman aineksen monimuotoisuus tuntuu puuttuvan. Ehkä tää kaipaisi syventymistä sanoituksiin? Jos ne ovat vain näennäisen yksinkertaiset? Musiikki tosin kannustaa aika suoraan, kirjaimelliseen tulkintaan, koska sekään ei sisällä kommervenkkejä. On siis miellyttävää kuultavaa, vaikka Neilin äänen naukuvuus vähän korostuu. Tekis mieli kuulla tästä live-versio, josko energiaa ois lisää.

Diminishing returns from the sound he honed on Rust Never Sleeps.

I've reviewed Harvest and Tonight's the Night, and I've listened to Psychedelic Pill on my own, but this is my first time listening to this album. Neil Young is pretty hit or miss with me, so my expectations for this album were pretty middle of the road. I wasn't wowed by Harvest or Tonight's the Night, but I do love Freedom (I'm so pissed it's not on the list), and I thought Psychedelic Pill was pretty good. Overall, I thought this album was fine. I know Neil Young's voice isn't a lot of people's favorite, but I like his voice, and there were some nice backing harmonies on this album too, which is something I love about CSNY. I liked the garage rock sound of the album, although it did feel like there wasn't a lot of variation in sound from song to song. Granted, most of the songs were fine, so it wasn't a huge detractor. "Country Home" and "Over and Over" were my favorite songs on the album, and they had some of my favorite guitar playing on the album as well. That's three Neil Young albums down, so I think I only have 15 or so of his albums left.

It was....fine, I guess. Not sure that I am a Neil Young fan.

Surprisingly good. Is this country?

I’ve never listened to Neil Young before. This album told me that there’s probably an album of his out there that I would love. Just not this one.

You know, it was a pretty good listen.

Vintage NY, good listen. Enjoyed the long jams. Farmer John and Mother Earth should have gotten lost in the woods (and left off the album - both are just artsy filler for the panel.) Album would have been even better if it was 9 minutes shorter. (2.9*s)

I like this version of Neil. Not exceptional, but good stuff.

It's decent dad rock but wasn't worth skipping YouTube ads every 5 minutes for

Enjoyable, although a little "preachy"/didactic for me ("Mother Earth"??). But Neil Young knows how to sequence power chords.

This may be getting a little higher rating because of the dislike of recent album selections but I enjoyed hearing a little rock.

5.5/10 There's way too much Neil Young on this list. At least the singing here isn't as bad as some of the others. Highlights: Love to Burn

Found on YouTube. Unbelievable music.

I really like the instrumentals and solos, I’m not sure I dig his singing delivery.

Pretty generic mid period Neil, not bad but not great

Decent

loved the instrumental, but the singing started to feel painful to listen to. :-/

I liked this album quite a bit despite its muffled, unpolished, gritty sound. The guitar really shines here and there's something about the whole thing thats very carefree. Maybe they didn't give a fuck how it sounded and that's what's good about it. The fact that it came out before "grunge" and "garage rock" were even a thing is pretty monumental. It feels dirty and natural, like you're there just hanging at a jam session with friends. There's no golds on here but it's full of truth and passion. Worth a listen.

I'm going to try again with this. But my first thought was that this era of bluesy rock only sounds good at the back of the Roadhouse, with Laura Palmer dancing. I can imagine sitting at a show with a tall beer and getting an incredibly warm feeling from the atmosphere and music. But this alone was not enough to get me there.

a long album and Neil young’s voice is somewhat hard to hear in certain songs but decent Top tracks: Mansion On The Hill

It's fine, though this is not the Neil Young I think of when I want to listen to Neil Young.

It was fine, but a lot of the same thing over and over. I got bored and was ready for it to end. It wasn’t bad music though!

Garagerock, niet slecht, niet bijzonder.

I like Neil Young but never heard this one before. Guitars sound great as they always do but not his strongest songs

Album was okay. Can see how this album influenced later grunge themes, but didn’t enjoy the album itself really

I enjoyed this but not quite a 4 for me.

Not as good as his other stuff, but still good.

I love Neil, and this is a good album, but it's a bit too country/twangy for my taste. I prefer it when Neil is giving us the business by ROCKING. Tonally and lyrically there wasn't much that moved me on this one, I guess I just generally prefer his 70's sound over this. Love the album name and cover art though.

Enjoyed this. Some good tracks.

Farmer john is so cool. Last song is pretty cool too

Something about this light folk and Neil’s voice just really hits me. I’ve never really listened to Neil outside of like “heart of gold”, but this hits me in a way that Tom Petty does and I find it relaxing and reassuring in a “we’re all gonna die, so relax” kind of way. 4/5?

The old goat creates quite a racket here. I say old goat - he was only 44 at the time. I remember back in 1990 thinking that he sounded ancient. There is a great live feel to this record. The mix is spot on with the reverb rattling away and some highly tuned guitars to add to the balance. It's also a proper collection of songs. This feels like an album, and not random ideas. It's driving music. It almost makes me want to learn to drive.

didn't blow me away

Once again Neil Young not being on Spotify loses him what might've been a very weak four from me and instead gets an indifferent 3. This album wasn't as good as the last one of Neil's I got and definitely felt more hippyish with tracks like mother earth that just kinda made me roll my eyes.

Not on Spotify

Mellow music. Not my favorite Neil Young album but overall was pretty good.

As much as I like hearing an aging Young ramble on about his nice country home, this one missed the mark a bit. The jams are pretty fun, but become sort of stagnant after a while. Far from his best, but by no means bad.

Pitää yrittää respect neil young vaikka ylikorostettuina listalla... kivasti loppuu biisit tässä :) ilo suupieliin..

Fiilis vaihteli kyl levyn myötä. Välillä aikamoista sontaa, välillä kovaa kamaa. Tasapaksu ihan jees kolmekauttaviis.

Unfortunately still not on Spotify

Great guitar tone and good chops at times. I really enjoy live recorded albums and this likewise captures friends having fun jamming together around loosely defined songs. Few song moments to write home about but the focus is in the jam, and who doesn't like jam? No song writing to write home about but a solid album all the same

not on Spotify

Too long. All the songs sounded the same. Didn’t hate it though. Instrumentals were better than the vocals.

More country than I prefer but I am appreciating Neil Young more than I did before

Good for its time I suppose? The lyrics and phrasing of them were kinda basic mostly

Not Neil’s finest work, but certainly an admirable addition 20 years past his glory days. A few of the songs on it are really solid.

Harvest 2/5 After the Gold Rush 3/5 Tonight's the Night 3/5 --------------------------------- This one is better than all the above for my taste. I liked the hard rock sound more, and Neil's voice wasn't as annoying. I didn't love it though. The songs were too long, and there were ten of them, making the album itself too long. It's almost as if he didn't realize non-fans would be listening to it 30 years later but still wanting to get through it as quickly as possible. Also didn't care for the hippie-dippie final track, Mother Earth. Favorites: F!#in' Up and Farmer John.

My stinky other half didn’t believe me that Neil Young is the same person as the one in Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young. She couldn’t understand how the “Keep On Rocking In The Free World” guy was also the one from the famous folk-rock band. And that’s totally valid, to be fair. Songs I already knew: none Favourites: Country Home, Mansion On The Hill The only previous album of Neil Young I’d heard (outside of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young) was Harvest which didn’t really do much for me. Today’s album is completely different to that, being a straight up dad-rock album with long guitar solos and anthem if choruses. My main gripe with this album is that it is far longer than it needed to be, with more than half of the tracks being over 5 minutes long (and two of them being over 10 minutes long). It definitely does overstay it’s welcome at times and makes you wonder how the same song is still playing, but the actual music itself was still fun. Overall, I liked it, but would have liked it more if it was shorter.

I do like Neil Young, but overall, something about the production or the combination of his voice and the repetitive sound just drones on in my mind. Maybe it's because he says his lyrics more than he sings them or that he is focusing more on lyrics than feeling.

Not a fan. Nothing actually wrong with this however I find Neil's singing too nasally and tuneless and his songwriting to be entry level.

Check to listen to but not my thing

Fairly generic. Maybe it's the mixing or the simplistic drums. Young's voice sounds thin and not in the same room. Some decent guitars sprinkled throughout.

Another album that I would have guessed that I would find unbearable that wasn't. It also was not all that interesting to me...

I think I might’ve overdone it on the Neil Young today. Or maybe 1990’s era NY just isn’t my thing. These songs are long with lots of guitar jamming that didn’t appeal to me at all this afternoon.

This loud, rough and ready, and quite garage-style album was _really_ out of step with the prevailing production style for major (and major-label) artists at the end of the 1980s. No drum machines, minimal overdubbing, noisy guitars, all creating a real garage rock vibe. It's pretty raw and immediate, which I like. In hindsight, we can see this was prescient of the changes that grunge ushered in a year or two later (although, the undergrounds scene had always embraced this kind of sound). it was only really revolutionary if you were a long established major label artist. But, Neil Young's flannel shirt wearing, feedback embracing, live in the room sound certainly resonated with many of the major rock artists that came up in the early 90s. But I don't think Young really heralded the way; there were plenty of bands that are more influential on this movement. Young seems almost completely uninterested in musical fashion, and his (understandable) rebellion against he then current sound of corporate rock and roll accidentally coincided with a whole movement. It made him temporarily relevant, even if still a long way from the cutting edge. So, I quite like the sound of this record; the guitars are loud and the live-in-the-room immediacy appeals. It rocks, although I wish Young would embrace brevity. There is no reason for songs as long as these (there are 2 over ten minutes!). It's just indulgent. But I do like Neil Young when he turns up the amps (my favourite Neil Young album is the Deadman soundtrack, no lie). But I find Young's baby boomer, old hippy bullshit lyrics incredibly annoying. Worst offenders are "Mother Earth (Natural Anthem)" and "Days Used to Be". His subsequent railing against the mp3 format and spotify (and seemingly any technology since the steam engine) are wildly out of touch. OK Boomer, you had a good time living a yurt with your old lady in the 60s. Glad to hear it, now fuck off.

Didn’t listen because the tracks were unavailable. Don’t mind some Neil Young so gave it a 3.

It was an ok album. Neil's voice is very hit of miss for me. His songwriting is top notch as always.

Neil Young really revitalized himself when he joined up with Crazy Horse and later Promise of the Real. The longer compositions really shows of his strength as a rock composer but too many of the shorter songs never gets me interested.

This is what I call cool country: I have come to terms with liking some sort of country, mainly this genre of rock country with the guitar which actually sounds decent and strong vocals which are so much less annoying than the twang of traditional southern songs. Overall I'd say this album isn't the best but I wouldn't immediately turn it off or skip the songs if they came up in playlist. To conclude Neil Young isn't awful but ffs just get him back on spotify.

Not on Spotify so I can’t listen . 2.5/5.

Ok album but not a re-listen for me, saved a couple songs into a rock playlist.

Non male.

Meh. Not bad, but nothing that stood out to me. The guitar was very uninteresting and Neil Young was mostly singing loud (which I find to be whiney) rather than singing softly (like For What It's Worth or Old Man).

Not bad but still can’t really stand abril Young’s voice most of the time. Love the distortion tone of the guitars though.

Rockin’ tunes. Good stuff all around but I swear one of those nostalgic songs sounded just like My Back Pages.

Finally some rock n roll. Great to hear The Horse ride again, but not nearly as good as their original albums. Just a good ole fashioned American rock album to have on in the background while you polish off some Miller High Lifes and change the oil in your El Camino

Solid rock and roll. Nothing very special stood out to me. Good background music.

Good old fashion rock and roll by Mr. Young

This is some good ol fashioned raw shit. Lots of guitar solos weeeeee. Love and Only Love rocks

Nothing really new here for me. Really solid album, and maybe slightly poppier. But it doesn't really deliver what Sepultura has.

Great guitar album. Was dreading the long songs, but I actually found myself vibing to them and being lower on the shorter, more vocal numbers... and the reason for that is probably Neil's voice. I'm not a stranger to him and I think there's a certain resonance to it, but that tends to hit more on his acoustic stuff. With this kind of backing, he mostly just sounds weak and thin. Not many melodies to speak of, either, despite whatever's being attempted on that last song. Band is consistently pretty great though. Best song: Love and Only Love

A somewhat frustrating listening experience. Most songs had something that drew me in, but they also had a section that I found grating or the songs would be undeservingly long. I enjoyed this most at it's noisiest, bar the guitar solos. I'm just not huge on guitar solos they always lose my interest sorry bout it. 2.5 Favourite song: White line

A nice rock album, that's perfect to listen to in the background, of course if someone is a rock fan. I'm still not a fan of Neil Young's vocal, it just doesn't resonate with me. "Ragged Glory" has no bad song, but instead is filled with a bit better than average songs, that let you move your leg to the beat constantly, but without much thought or deeper interpretation. Interesting position on the list, but I will probably forget about this album in few days.

A good garage rock album. 3/5

Back to back Neil Young. This one is okay, not as good as yesterday. This list didn't need this or about 15 of the other Neil Young albums of his that were included.

Pretty good Neil Young stuff. Nothing stands out on this record for me, just some predictable, common Neil Young sound.

Not my favorite Neil Young sound - this doesn't really do much for me. Some of it's pretty good, but most is pretty bland.

Not on Spotify.

Some good jams in here

I knew this album would be trouble the second it wasn't on Spotify. I hunted it down and found it on Youtube, which is not an ideal way for me to listen to anything. Anyways, it's not because this is country rock that I found it kind of mediocre. It's because when I see a song...and it's like, 10 minutes long, I know I'm entering into place where I'm going to zone out because I'm sure the band is having a blast but if you don't have anything else to say (or I'm not high) move on with it. For the record though, I did find some of the songs genuinely great. I would listen to this again. Probably not anytime soon. Also, put it on Spotify.

Fine, not my fav

Ok another Neil Young record and another clichéd dad rock album. At least his storytelling is strong. A decent record.

The boys play good The man sings great The songs are fine (if overlong and samey) But this ain’t no Harvest

I like Neil Young and the band Crazy Horse; both together and separately. This is an okay album but nothing earth shattering. I'm not sure why this album needs to be here. Neil has a vast catalog and I guess any of his albums could fall into the group but not necessarily be anything more than exposure to Neil Young and his rock and roll side. Sounds like Neil Young.... meh.

S'alright. Every song goes on too long. They all kinda sound the same. Some nice harmonies. I think this probably got (and is still getting) more attention than it deserved due to Neil being older but still being able to rock as hard as the grunge guys. But again: s'alright.

It's fine, but there is absolutely no need for some of these songs to be ten minutes long.

Couldn’t listen on spotify

Good road-trip tunes for the ride home for break

Neil Young never disappoints, a very late album in his career but still so good and so different. The definition of garage rock. First time listening to this album and I enjoyed it! Not is best but sure not his worst! Crazy Horse is always good to see behind Young. Good album!

I used to argue with people on message boards in defense of Neil Young. Not sure why. This album is fine but not worth getting worked up about

I appreciate the garage rock aesthetic and its importance to the burgeoning Grunge movement but the songs become a little long and repetitive. I find Young most effective with his quieter songs.

Most of this was good Neil Young but most of it was not exceptional.

Highlights: "Fuckin Up," "Love to Burn," "Mother Earth" This is Exhibit A for the fundamental overlap of 90s rock and country. Sure, the album is samey. The songs are all overlong. The lyricism can have shocking and bitter moments of candor, but is mostly some blend of sappy and creepy. The most common first impression on hearing Neil Young's wan voice is "you've got to be kidding me." But that guitar, and that surprising juxtaposition with those CSNY vocal harmonies, carry on in the best grunge and alt music. Young's solos here can evoke the 80s and 90s, but sit somewhere outside of them: cascades of pinch harmonics like a hair metal stunt man, but no buzzsaw chugging or hyperactive peddling of rote exercises; waves of feedback and sputtering, but not the flat terrain of distortion pedal waveforms. His technique here is through the dynamics of the amplifier, and you couldn't get it any other way. The decade's timbres are just chasing a facsimile. Worth the listen just for that.

5/10 more ragged than glorious

This is nor one of Mr Young's better works.

It’s the Kermit The Frog guy! This is ok. A bit meh. I liked Farmer John, which I understand is a cover. Decent songs, some nice rock guitar sounds… worth a 3… probably

Beter dan verwacht, ruiger, paar vette nummers.

Lot of solos with a small amount of main sections. There's some things to love in this album. Young crafts perfect chord changes and makes a good listen, but not certain it's something I'll listen to again.

nothing too spicy, but the dad rock is getting a bit monotonous

a classic. Not my style though

3/5. A call back to awesome jamming songs. It’s a little long to be a 4 but it definitely is a good time. An album to play really loud for sure.

For every pro is a matching con to take this record down a level. First, I quite like the country rock sound - when done properly the two genres really mesh well together, moreso when you add a tinge of grunge. But, most of the songs go on for too long. Some of these songs did not have to be 8-10 minutes long. Second, Neil Young is a beast on the guitar and is rightfully up there with the rest of the greats. The contrast between the insane guitars and the simplicity of his melodies (and voice) makes so much sense too. But he can't really sing, can he? It's a perfectly average voice, like this is just some guy doing Neil Young covers as best as he can. I guess one man truly can't have it all. Overall, it's still a high-three star effort. Standout tracks are Mansion on the Hill, Days That Used to Be, and, despite the length, Love and Only Love.

Not bad, but not a standout either.

Not Neil at his best, but it's still good

It was okay, some good songs in there, and some that were just too long.

Bit lame

The one song that characterised this album was Over and Over: it went On and On. I liked Young's unique guitar work, but it could barely compensate for an otherwise rather underwhelming set of often dragging and unimaginative songs. I guess the closing track saves it from dropping below 3 stars.

The usual spun-out NY rock, nothing remarkable here.

Well, Neil Young apparently sings on this album. I like Neil Young in general, but Ragged Glory was all new music to me. It took all the way to the final track ("Mother Earth (Natural Anthem)") before I finally heard something that took hold of my attention. The rest of the album will probably fade from my memory fast. I'm not sure why THIS album from Young was recommended. for me it felt "okay" at best.

The tunes are jolly, but is he flat?

Pretty good overall

One of the better Neil Young albums

I feel like I owned this at some point, near to when it came out, I certainly am very familiar with the material. Whatever the case, I haven’t had it in my collection for many years. Which about sums up my feelings on it... A decent enough album, though lyrically nowhere near the top of Young’s game. And the loose, recorded live feeling that serves to benefit a Rust Never Sleeps becomes a liability here, giving some songs a slack, lazy feel. It doesn’t make the cut for Neil Young on this list in my book (he’s over represented even without this one).

A totally pleasant, energetic and fun album, but by no means essential or reference. Return-to-form albums have this catch, perception and context make them seem so much better than they actually are. In any case, rocking out to gritty Crazy Horse albums is a given and always a satisfactory experience.

Nice ending. Nice and consistent all the way through.

Far from Young's best albums (and my god has he had some great ones) Looking forward to seeing some of his other records come up, but this one's only getting a 3

Ihan kelpo rockia

Decent album. I liked it more than I expected. Sorta like folkier Dinosaur Jr. The songs were overall too long though, and meandering. I also didn't care too much for Neil's vocals. 3/5

Carino ma un po' troppo MAGA (make america great again)

ragged glory contains a different genre for neil young, while still containing some of his folk roots. some of this album was full of what i'd call jam sessions. there seemed like there were more than usual amount of instrumental interludes, and neil young just wanted to rock out with the crazy horse--which is not a bad thing! the guitar, bass, and drums are positively bangin'. i do think that young lost some of his spunk he had earlier in his career. granted, i don't know very much neil young music, but when most of the album is written by him, i assumed more political topics would have been covered. but none of us need to be political all the time, so that's just a passing note.

I liked this okay, but I will say that Neil Young just sounds kind of odd when his vocals are put on this genre. On some tracks, it's passable, and on others, it's downright bad. His voice just tends to be more bearable when he sings folk, for whatever reason. In some ways, this album feels like jumping back in time. Some tracks sound straight out of the garage rock era of the 60s, and others sound a little bit more fresh. Either way, garage rock was definitely not a thriving sound in the 90s, so this album definitely delivers a fresh twist on something old. This album is no doubt a tribute to the genre of what came before. While labeled as garage rock, I can definitely hear the subtle hints of 90s country music in this work, as well. This would no doubt continue to feed into Young's own influences, as he would go on to explore country rock even further in following albums. The guitar work on this album is the REAL MVP here; it is forward, clear, and audible, but still manages to be as distorted and as imperfect as one would expect from a garage rock album. I would listen to this album again just for that guitar.

Du rock solide, qui livre la marchandise.

If I had a nickel for every Neil Young and Crazy Horse album on this list I’d have two nickels, which isn’t a lot, but it’s weird that it happened twice.

You can definitely hear how he was so influential to Nirvana and Pearl Jam. The raw, live element is great, but NY’s vocals totally overshadow everything else.

Listened to like part of one song, it was ok

It's a decent sounding Neil Young album but nothing too spectacular. One song sounds a lot like "My Back Pages". Still available on Amazon Music!

Love Neil Young and remember liking this album more than I did on this listen. Ita a bit all over the place content wise...Still don't hate it, but not one of his best

After listening to some Neil Young albums on this list (apparently, he is essential for the 1001 book's authors), I confirmed that the Crazy Horse band songs are the best version of Neil Young songs. "Rust Never Sleeps" is far away better than this one, but it's still an adorable listening session.

Neil young is one of the greatest singer songwriters of a generation. This early 90s album may be 1 of the first grunge records recorded.

Rating: 6/10 Best songs: Farmer John

Rock on and Yeehaw

Better than 3, not 4.

I know he's very talented but I've never been a fan of Neil Young, so my feelings about this are... lukewarm

Really good. 3.5

Dammit! Why are Neil Youngs albums not on spotify?! Gets boring quite quickly, and all Neil Young fans have this circle jerk that he is the best artist of all time, and he can do nothing wrong. I don't get that.. Good songs though.

Too many albums on this list from an artist who still stubbornly refuses to allow his music to be made available on the most popular streaming service in the world. Of course I love Ol' Neil, but according to my Amazon Music algorithm, I now love him more than any other artist and listen to him exclusively. It's a good thing the majority of his albums are great. This one is merely very good.

ok, but just ok to me. Album had some good tracks but no standouts to me.

I absolutely hate Neil Young's voice, but the songs and the rock is pretty good. Overall the vibe of the album is good, very jam-band esque.

3.5 I really liked this record more than I thought I would. The homemade, garage rock sound of this record does wonders for Neil Young, especially this deep into his career. It really captures the feeling that you're listening in on Young's private jam sessions rather than a polished set of studio recordings, and it makes the album that much better. While I don't think the songs spoke to me much on a personal level (hell maybe Fuckin Up), this was a really fun jam-out rock record. I could see myself returning to this one. Favorite songs: Fuckin Up, Over and Over, Love to Burn

While I tend to prefer the older folkier Neil Young, this album is pretty rad. I love how much room to breathe they give the songs. Very jammy.

Pretty good classic rock. Nothing special but enjoyed most of it.

Very country rock.

Solid effort by Neil Young. I would definitely continue to listen to this one. I think as I get to know it better I will enjoy it more.

Compared to Young's other work, this was a little underwhelming on account of the lack of creativity in the vocal delivery, which was one of my favorite elements of his songs. It's still solid, though!

Listened Before? N Hey this was alright. I remember the time period this came out, and it was largely praised. It does have a good sound, like the reviews say, it's "garage rock" sounding. Pretty jammy. Here's the thing for me, though.. I don't like NY enough to really love it. His style is pretty same-y on every song. Its good, but it gets old after a while. Added to Library? N Songs added to Playlist: Country Home

Coming back to some I missed so this was after a LOT of Neil Young, and Ragged Glory is probably some of the more enjoyable stuff we had to listen to. It's dirtier and heavier, Country Home, Over and Over, Love to Burn are all good, the music dominates rather than his voice. The rest is meh filler but 3/5.

I actually enjoyed this a lot more than I thought I would... Basically, it's better than the previous Neil Young albums because there's a lot more to hide his voice than usual (the songs suit it better, there's more backing vocals, and there's much more weight given to the instrumental parts). Still not exactly mind-blowing, but scrapes a 3 as I'm in a generous move and it is better than the two other Neil Young albums we've had.

Not really a favourite of mine among Neil Young albums. Seems kind of a generic sounding rock and roll album with few memorable songs. Mansion on the Hill strikes me as one of the better tunes but besides that. 3 🌟

I know he's a legend, so it's a little embarrassing to admit that I've never really enjoyed his music much, and I'm afraid this album didn't change my mind.

Totally average latter day Neil Young record. I appreciate the idea of keeping it loose but not sure if I like the results. I'll give it a 3 because it's palatable to me, but I certainly don't think it belongs on this list. He's just taking up room that could have been occupied by a more deserving, younger group from this same time period.

Much prefer Neil Young solo over the rockier style. But it's fine.

I think I have a weird relationship with Neil Young. Sometimes I think he's brilliant and other times I think his lyrics are sophomoric. His writing is generally pretty good. This album encompasses all of that.

I love hearing Neil Young with some electric guitars behind him. This album has a few songs that come across as kind of podunky dad rock though, which isn't always the case with Neil Young. "F!#*in Up" isn't one of them and I appreciate how Neil comes across as a bit cooler and less caring in that track. Production wise this was pretty great for 1990. It's got a ton of grunge tones in the fuzzy, scratchy guitars, and I think it was probably a breath of fresh air for rock and roll fans trying to get away from the 80s. I also like how loose some of the tracks feel. There's a lot of room to breathe and the foundational elements - the bass and drums - tend to be pretty tight throughout. I do think the drums can be a little boring at times, but I think that for this period of rock music there isn't much exploration going on for drummers/ drumset players, so I'm looking at it coming from a place of modernity in rock music where percussion elements tend to be a little more exploratory and a little more engaging. These drumbeats sound like the first ones you hear when you open up a programmed drumset application as a music producer- "Rock Beat 1" "Rock Beat Ballad 3" "Mid Tempo Rock 6" etc. Overall I like the album! Neil Young is great and I love hearing him in a rock setting with Crazy Horse.

Lekker hoor, prachtige stem

Raw, very cut loose but tight performances. Lovely harmonies throughout. Not my favorite of Neil Young's, but the spirit is there. Favorite tracks: "Love to Burn", "Mansion on the Hill"

All very admirable, but not really my thing

Fine I guess, better than Rust Never Sleeps.

Not the hottest of Neil Young's albums, but it definitely has that particular Neil Young sound that I like so much.

Somewhat listenable

achei genérico. não me tocou ou me empolgou em nenhuma música.

I am much more a Neil Young solo fan than a Neil Young & Crazy Horse fan... But this is pretty solid.

We've had a few from Neil Young so far, and I'm not sure where I stand on his music. Definitely enjoyable, but not a whole lot that jumps out at me. There's a cool spaciousness to this album though, the tracks run long and let you sink into them. I definitely liked this, but wasn't super impressed. Still waiting for the Neil Young project to flip that switch. Favorite tracks: Over and Over, Mother Earth, Farmer John. Album art: Fisheye band photo? That's it? 3/5

Finally got round to listening to this on Apple Music. Good album deserves to be on the list, but not sure Neil Youngs voice is well suited on this album. Glad I listened but would rate other NY and CH albums higher.

⭐⭐⭐

Neil the rocker returns with this grungy set of tunes. Fuzz peddle is in overdrive - it's a shame that it's a real mixed bag of tunes. Probably top draw for most other artists but for Old Shakey here it's mediocre at best. Best Tracks: Country Home; F!#*in' Up; Mansion on the Hill

This album was alright. Had a few good songs, but I wasn't that much of a fan of the more grungy sounds.

A really fun listen, Young sounds great and band is solid. A great album? Maybe more of a really good record but short of “special”.

Splendid country-boiled rock, wry lyrics and commentary on life and growing older that doesn't get in the way of the chunky guitar sound. Would listen to again.

good grunge album, the second half was a little bit worse imo, nice heavy sound, 3- because it lasted too long for me

Not bad! Have definitely heard worse!

a by the numbers rock album. Fine but not something i'd just put on

It's okay. Pretty straightforward. I liked it but not sure why it's on this list.

I don't think I hated this as much as others in the group but I can completely see why. I guess I was able to just enjoy it as face value but it's nothing special, especially from Neil Young.

Han har lavet bedre tbh

Gotta love and respect Neil Young and the gang’s fire and passion. An interesting, saucy batch of tunes. 5/10

I can't get past Young's voice. I really tried. I'm sorry. Didn't add.

Even as a Neil Young apologist, this was a bit much for me. Best track: White Line

Country met een twist

I wouldn't say this was Neil's best. Still has some great tracks on it

Pretty decent.

Final notes held too long and it’s a bit Dad rock but overall enjoyable.

The verse melody of Country Home is very similar to Jingle Bells. Which is odd. It's very much the Neil Young that put me off Neil Young in the 90s before I discovered his earlier stuff. A bit sludgy and AM rock sounding. In hindsight, it still has some of that underlying melancholy which I love about Neil Young. But it really sounds like Jingle Bells. White Line is pretty average. But I think maybe this album is more about Neil Young discovering the joy of playing again. I think rough and ready is what he was aiming for. And I can see how he ended up a kind of elder statesman of grunge with this sort of heavy, maudlin, uptempo rock. Fuckin Up is better. His voice is finally going near the sort of registers it really has impact in. By Over and Over I'm getting a feeling there isn't going to be a ton of variation on this record. Think I'll just mention any notable tracks and let it wash over me otherwise. Noel Gallagher must crap himself every time a lawyer hears Love to Burn. Everything he didn't nick from John Lennon's grave can be found here! There follows three back to back great, or at least fun tracks. Farmer John bounces along with a cheeky grin, Mansion on the Hill feels like the blueprint for every b listed Britpop band, and Days That Used to Be is lovely, especially as it feels like he might just be being snide to his former bandmates... Back to rock chuggers after this, but that little window may have just bumped the review up a star! Quite fond of the last track too. It's a good album, I'm impressed at Young at, what, about 50 making a slightly sludgy, but mostly enjoyable new version of his sound - I didn't realise he did reinvention so well.

A nice folk album that's easy to listen to. 0RS

While this album had its moments, it was not my favorite effort by Neil Young and Crazy Horse. Certain sounds were very dated and though I enjoyed the garage rock feel, there are much better examples out there

I'm not much of a Neil Young fan. I've only listened to Harvest and several of his hits. But apparently, he has a long career of doing whatever genre he wants. That being said, I can only hear him doing folk / country rock. But here we have a forerunner to grunge, an album that Cobain would cite as an influence for Nevermind (of course Young didn't invent grunge: Bleach came out a year before). But here we have a garage rock style of rawness and high level of distortion and feedback. That being said, all the songs are just decent. The first few are pretty good, but nothing spectacular. Certainly, no hits with the lengths of several of these tracks. The last three tracks were also good but somewhat forgettable. Regarding the lengths, I think it does more harm than good. "Country Home" and "Over and Over" worked out well. I felt like "Love to Burn" could have been cut a few minutes short in the middle, but I did enjoy the end solo. And I was not a fan of "Love and Only Love," so I felt its length was not welcomed. Best overall track: Country Home Classic Neil with a twist: White Line Best riffs: F*!#in' Up Grungiest: Farmer John Catchiest: Mansion on the Hill

Good rock album. I liked the guitar sound. Songs are all a bit too long. One or two are dreadful (farmer song).3.5 out of 5

Me han gustado: Fcuking`Up, Over and Over y Mansion on the Hill.

American with a capital A garage rock, some good stuff, but overall a little underwhelming. Strong finishing songs though.

Another great collaboration, great jam session

its alright i guess

Love the rockin' guitars, the vocal harmonies, and the live feel, but I struggle with a lot of Neil Young and this is no exception. Some good songs, but his voice always seems quite weak and whiny in comparison to the music. This album also feels far too long, and drags in places. Rhythm section is mediocre at best. But the aforementioned rockin' guitars definitely bring it up a notch. (2.6)

good instrumentals/lyrics (sometimes), weird vocals

So Neil young it hurts

Sounds a lot like a garage band, happily experimenting and bringing a lot of energy to the table. Smells of old times included. I enjoyed listening, may end up listening again.

good message, not my style

loud and unexpected. not to my taste but not horrible.

Pretty ok, again I'm understanding more how people like Neil Young but seems like more the bridge to modern country here.

ehhhh... 3 stars or 2 so far?

3.5/5 interesting album, i'll have to relisten though

its good - not spectacular, a bit of fluff (farmer john?), but good

Honestly I was too busy today to give a full breakdown of the album and my thoughts on it but fortunately I didn’t really have many strong thoughts. I didn’t hate any of it and I didn’t particularly love any of it either. Favorite songs: Over and Over Days That Used to Be Decent 6/10

Didn’t really do anything for me, sorry Neil

I like Neil Young but never heard this one before. Guitars sound great as they always do but not his strongest songs

Yeah decent

3.5 - Simple, heartfelt songs that unfold unhurriedly. Lots of Young’s characteristic guitar work - notes sustained with tremolo and loads of gain. Great for an extended road trip. Comforting as a home cooked meal, fills your soul though it may be a little bland.

Apparently, there are 17 Neil Young appearances on 1001, including CSNY & Buffalo Springfield - more than any other artist. So therefore, with a number of #4s & #5s on the horizon, I’m going to give this one a #3. Crazy Horse rocks as always. I like the way they seem to be playing for themselves - I can't see them doing multiple takes to get it just right. I love the two guitars no keyboards, but some of the compositions aren't Neil's strongest and his voice is strained at times.

not that crazy and also not that horse
