It is interesting and unique, love the innovation but not something I want to listen to all the time.
Not my favourite, i probably won't listen to it again, but the atmosphere is really good
Favorite track: Big Time Sensuality Good groove, and I like the weirdness, but not much stuck with me.
Must have been a simpler time when sample libraries were much smaller.
Musically it's really great and good for background while working. Vocally this is not it for me.
3.7
She is always a bit out there but this was good
Listened when it came out. Twice I think. But no desperate need to listen again
Not as bad as I anticipated. Voice has range just not the genre for me.
Surprisingly good melodies.
not a bjork fan by any means, but this album must have been the next new thing when it came out. such a variety of sounds and styles put together!
Not bad.....not that great but i didn't hate it.
Very dreamlike, in a number of different ways. Not my favorite overall (i think the minimalism just doesn't catch me), but an intriguing album
I like some songs a lot - they have a classic sound, but others are forgettable. 3/5 #musicsky #albumsky #musicchallenge
I've listened to this before and liked it but have never loved any Bjork I have listened to despite everything about my music taste pointing towards me having her as one of my fav artists. It's strange! I feel like it's weird to be lukewarm on Bjork but here we are. Maybe the issue is I need to listen on my "jetto blaster" Fav song: Venus as a Boy tbh :pray emoji:
Much vibier than I had given Björk’s other work credit for! I first became aware of her circa 2007 when I was in my “rip music off my friends’ older brothers’ laptops” era, but I never really connected with Björk as an artist until now. The Debut album is full of passion, much more emotional than the other early-90s Euro dance stuff I’ve listened to. I enjoyed it.
A couple songs were bops, but not a huge fan overall. Influential for sure, and you can see where some later artists were inspired, but don’t think I would listen again
not really my thing but I actually enjoyed some things about it. the music was varied and interesting. I wouldn't listen to the album all the way through, but it was interesting for this project.
Strong Debut album, a bit experimental which I would expect no less from Bjork. The singles are the highlights and Human Behavior is on my favorite lists from this time period.
I'm not that familiar with specific Bjork songs, but this album was exactly what I expected.
Classic. 3/5
25/05/2025 Wasn't really a fan of it. Too wishy washy.
I wasn't as struck by this, though I appreciate that for a debut album it is remarkable. I think it is an excellent album, just is not to my personal taste.
This is actually decent. Not my style, I'd say, but not bad. I'd go 6.5/10, so 3/5.
On the fence on this one, I feel like everyone knows her music though
I thought Björk was like smart and innovative, so I found this album a little surprising in how safe it was. Everyone I've ever dated had been a Björk fan, so I've heard a lot of her stuff but without context. Ok, so I asked my wife for her thoughts on the album: "A good bridge between the Sugarcubes and her later stuff, mostly cute but nothing compared to her awe inspiring later work." Can't disagree! I think there's a few good songs on here but overall pretty much just ok.
Objectively, this is a very good collection of songs. Bjork's voice is her own, squeaky, childish at times, playful. She croons and yells and is the constant that holds these songs together. But, for me that is not enough. I like most of the songs, or at least can find something interesting in them but other than Bjork's voice there is little continuity. The songs vary in style from dance to pop standards to experimental noise to another style of dance. As an album it can be jarring. It's like she hasn't decided in which direction to go and so tries them all. I don't know her music that well and perhaps later albums find a definitive direction.
Was hoping to find this better than I remember at the time and to a degree it was. Favourite song was clearly Venus as a Boy if for no other reason than reminding me of one of my favourite films, Leon.
Well compared to the more contemporary and all far too challenging Vulnicura album we’ve already had on the list, accessibility wise this is like listening to Right Said Fred. Actually I quite like albums like this which are an artist trying a few styles which keeps you guessing what’s next. The more elec dance tracks are the winners for me. The more jazz based stuff, which I think is where she heads more in the future, certainly is not. Hit and miss but it’s OK, and definitely feels like a 90s nostalgia trip.
I liked the Electronic tracks the most as well as "The Anchor Song". Overall the album is too discordant and intellectual for me. I think I get what Bjork is putting down, but it's more challenging than I like my tunes.
One a kind genius sprinkles creativity left, right and centre like it's nothing, hopping from jazz club to night club, honking her big old horn of a voice that comes all the from the tips of her toes. It has aged a little bit - especially some of the very early 90s beats - but even the 90s-est, beats-iest track There's More To Life Than This has been produced in a left of centre way, moving between rooms in a noisy bar, that you wouldn't get from anyone else. Can’t wait for her later stuff to pop up.
Okay not terrible but not sure i would ever go out of my way to listen to her again. All i can picture is her dressed like a swan Marv: whyd you take your socks and shoes off Harry: why are you dressed like a chicken
I can see how this was big when it came out, but now it is meh
- Human Behaviour is one of my fave Bjork songs...I didn't realize that it was the first song on her debut album. - I haven't listened to this album in forever, I kinda forgot I enjoyed so much of it. Bjork isn't on many of my playlists, some of her stuff I don't like, but this album is enjoyable to me. - I haven't heard Violently Happy is so long, another song I love.
3 out of 5. There were some fun tracks and I'm starting to see why people enjoy her music.
I don't hate it. It actually started to grow on me by the end. It still sounds incredibly early-90s; perhaps you had to be there (I was 5) to get the most out of it. Might try again one day with a side of MDMA.
There are tracks I'll skip next time, but better than I expected.
point3.
2.5/5
Weird and fun. I like bjork, but not for every playlist
Never listened to Bjork so really didn't know what to expect. This seems to be what you get when you smash Iceland and Eurovision into a person. It was...interesting?
Bien
I just find Bjork okay. It feels like she's trying so hard to push boundaries it's just forced.
Too slow for my tastes. Didn’t complete listening. Better than I expected though. Way more experimental than I expected. Will definitely come back for more
3.5
For me is to nieche
I remember the first time I saw the video for human behaviour. Wasn’t the type of music I was checking for at the time and it grabbed me immediately
This isn't an instance of an artist emerging fully formed, but Bjork is very close to in focus on this album. Compared to her later works I would describe Debut as a little messy and chaotic, but the eccentric production, stunning vocal leaps, and sensual lyrical themes are all here. Great start to her solo catalog
Mostly not for me, but I liked some of the house electronic stuff!
The album can be best described to someone new to it or the artist (me) with just one of the prominent genres which shines through the album, "house pop". This album lives up to the name and gives it more complex and definitive meaning for me. This particular genre and the style to vocal and lyrical showcase isn't something I would pick from a collective of music on my own, but if presented through another agent, I won't mind listening to it in the least. The music is calming and can be classified as "easy going" which I guess describes the genre itself, but in my eyes is the testament to the art and attention behind the project. There are definitely some elements I have discovered here, which I really enjoyed and will look forward to observing in more recent works. This project and the artist have truly bridged the gap I have felt between emotions and intentions put in the production vs lyricism and vocals I have witnessed with the few "modern" works which can be classified as "house pop adjacent". But this being my introduction to the genre, serves as a really solid starting point, but it's only failing in my rating comes from my own limit in taste, maybe with more admiration of more genres of music, when I revisit this album, I will have a greater appreciation for the art behind it. I see it has potential of growing on me more than this first listen. The rating completely based on my current music taste: 6/10 -16 April 2025
Bjork is weird, I had this CD in high school, I think. I have met other Icelandic people and she is pretty weird comparatively. The music is a little off, but unique in a way that is hers and hers alone.
7/10 😜 AHHHhhhHhhhhHHH (bjork voice)
More of an experience than 'listening to music'. Not something I'd have in my normal rotation but I can appreciate the craftsmanship of the album. The amount of sounds used is staggering. Had to check my surroundings a few times to check where the sound was coming from. I wouldn't say one song stood out so it would be hard for me to go back and listen to a single song. Definitely needs multiple listens to appreciate.
I like the way she sings. It's unique and it reminds me a lot of Caroline Polachek. This album was mixed and produced pretty terribly in several songs. You can barely hear the music because it's mixed so low in those songs. I appreciate the variety on this album. It has many different sounds. Honestly I wanted to like this more than I actually did which is a bummer.
I've tried since like 8th grade to enjoy Björk. Its not that I don't think she good or influential or important as an artist. But I really just have a hard time getting into her music. Some sounds remind me of Nico and others of Régine Chassagne from Arcade Fire and then others are totally dance pop. I can see how she's important for a lot of avant garde indie, but I think its really just not my cup of tea.
Stands up well over time
We've had some other Bjork records that were a serious chore to listen to. This one had some grooves and a bit of fun. It had hints of the weirdo stuff that she did later, but it was wrapped in a more pop-oriented exterior and it was easier for me to consume. She's a talented artist for sure.
I didn’t dislike it, and I thought I might. Influenced some female artists I like.
Have on vinyl: No Fav Track: Big Time Sensuality Notes: The cover song is unnecessary.
Some decent stuff mixed in here, though in retrospect the whole Bjork schtick runs a little thin for me. Human Behavior still has that quality that basically put Bjork on the map.
Something that will need a few listens, very eclectic, but I did enjoy it.
Very good but not essential
Samtidig e da kje heilt for meg. Ikkje så fan av 90-tallstrommene/-rytmen
I got a bit burned out on Björk because my brother went through a period of playing nothing but her albums, but revisiting this now it feels really fresh and contemporary for an album released in 1993. She is a singular talent and nothing else sounds like her. It’s interesting that her debut solo album already goes the ground running with her signature sound, I expected her first album to feel more like a Sugarcubes record, but yeah I enjoyed this.
Interesting and enjoyable without feeling like it's being weird just to be weird
Can appreciate how talented she is but idk if it’s for me
Björk has never been an artist I've particularly enjoyed, but this was okay and she can certainly sing. I'm still not really into it though.
This is a bit more accessible then some of the other things I have heard from Bjork. This has it's elements of dance and electronica such as on Human Behaviour and There's More to Life Than This, but it also has more like the soft harp driven Like Someone to Love, and the melodic Come to Me. Overall good.
Kinda weirded out at first, but somehow kinda liked it
Not her best album (Post is, go listen to that one plz). It's not bad. But it's not good. She develops GREAT ideas. I really love the orchestration and the rythms. I'm an avant-garde kinda guy, so I love Bjork's work. It's just this album.... she creates all these potential-high ideas, but she doesn't go anywhere with them. They are just... ideas. 6/10
Pretty good.
I was initially exposed to this album / artist via my sister, and naturally I did not "get it" at first. I think it all clicked after I heard the sophomore album (Post) and then later revisited this one and found a new appreciation for it. I still prefer the later releases in general (Post/Homogenic/Vespertine - what an incredible trio), but it was fun to go back to the beginning with this one.
Never been a big fan of Bjorks songs but listening to the album as a whole changed my perspective. I’d listen to this again.
I know I should like this, but I absolutely hate her affectations.
There was some really good stuff on here and especially the more energetic songs were amazing and really suited her voice. The slower and more relaxed songs didn’t though and just felt a bit boring or annoying at times. I’ll give it 3 stars.
I liked 5 of these songs back in the day, mainly the singles. Bjork punches paps so she gets and extra star.
Björk is very interesting and unique. Her vocal style alone can keep me interested in a song even if I’m not digging the music. So, it’s a bit of a bummer to not like Debut as much as I think I should. I want to like it more, I really do, but I can’t seem to get there. Human Behavior and Come To Me are my favorite tracks. Then there are four songs I like, followed by the rest which are either okay, or I don’t care for at all. (So sophisticated with my explanation) I’ve landed on a 3 for my overall rating. 3/5
I really enjoyed her vocals, but the music is a bit dated
Big fan of Björk and the Sugarcubes, I was actually not wowed by this. There were some real winners here (Venus as a boy, Come to me, Anchor Song--a brilliant outro) , I was here for the Weird. I just don't feel like its very cohesive sonically for a debut album. Björk's vocals remain Björk, but the everything else can't decide what it's going for.
i wish i had liked this more…it became background noise
She’s definitely unique. The only thing I’m sure of is that I never want to see dancers in the dark again.
I think I enjoyed this more than I've tended to enjoy her albums. A bunch of cool rhythmic stuff. Kind of like dancey trip hop vibes.
Not sure what to make of Bjork. There's just something so self indulgent there I can't get past. It's definitely an audio experience though. A good one to test the earphones!
I want to like this more than I do. It’s very well-produced and there are some nice sounds. Definitely whimsical. Ooh, saxes on Aeroplane. That was the highlight track. Probably nothing I will return to. Violently Happy reminded me of Suba, who I’ve only heard from this. Ok Anchor Song brings back the sax trio and is good.
I can never tell whether I vibe with bjork or whether she annoys me. I really liked One Day and in general the album, but since I literally never choose to listen to her, i gotta give it a 3/5
For the first time I wish we could rate with halves cuz I think I'd probably give it a three and a half. Hey Jordan, more than I thought I would, but I still don't think I'll be gone back for tomorrow
Although the 90s disco dance sounds abound in this album, there is a lot to appreciate. Foremost is the vocal style that’s jarring, otherworldly and beautiful. This album contains a lot. Jazz, funk, metal, disco. And Bjork carries those banners well and genuinely.
It has hints of future things, but hasn't got really everything together 7/10 Space Ghost(RIP) & Bjork https://youtu.be/tVMPL56mdGg
bjork stars out of bjork
Debut by Björk is a mixed bag. There are definitely some absolutely brilliant hits on this record that show off Björk’s unique flair and innovative style, but honestly, the rest of the album just feels so meh. It never really brings everything together as a cohesive whole. First off, the standout tracks are pure magic. The hits are innovative, with gorgeous production and Björk’s vocals soaring over lush, intricate arrangements that make them unforgettable. When Björk really hits her stride, her voice and the creative beats blend together into moments of absolute brilliance that you just can’t shake off. The production on these tracks is top-notch. rich, layered, and perfectly balanced. proving that Björk isn’t afraid to push boundaries. However, not every song on Debut lives up to that high standard. While the best tracks shine, much of the album feels a bit flat and disjointed in comparison. There are moments where the production, although technically sound, doesn’t capture the same spark, leaving a lot to be desired in terms of emotional engagement. It feels like the album struggles to maintain its momentum, and the overall experience is marred by tracks that just don’t hit the mark. In short, the hits are brilliant, but the filler tracks simply don’t bring the album together, leaving me feeling somewhat underwhelmed by the overall flow. For me, Debut by Björk is a record of highs and lows. The brilliant hits remind you why she’s such an iconic figure in music, yet the weaker tracks make it hard for the album to truly resonate as a complete work. It’s an interesting listen, but not one that I’d say consistently grabs me from start to finish. Overall, it earns a solid 3.4/5 stars in my book. a mixed record that has its shining moments, but ultimately leaves me wanting more cohesion.

7/10 I’m sorry to those that like Björking it to this album, as great as the most iconic songs on this are, Debut feels like it still isn’t quite there in terms of a “Björk” album. There’s great ideas after great ideas here that were a great foundation for what she would achieve on the next several albums, but unlike the next several albums, this one is really safe, it’s in a comfort zone that works really well if you were looking for a Dance/Pop album to keep you busy for 50 minutes, but I would say most of these songs are just pretty decent Dance songs and not much else. https://imgur.com/a/pctzl6R
The singles from this little corker were ubiquitous in my first year at university. I always thought I sort of heard them rather than listen to them. And having now revisited this album for this exercise it's clear how little I did listen. With 30 years of hindsight and probably a quarter million tunes accreting on top its noteworthy how fresh it remains and how deep the well of musical range has been drawn. It's a charming vibrant and passionately album that doesn't actually need all the usual bjork adjectives of playfulness and diversity. It's a great pop record.
I've always loved Human Behavior but it was the only Bjork song I knew. Never thought to explore more. I think I'm an essentially uncurious person. Anyway, turns out I wasn't missing much, as that's the most interesting song on the album. The rest of this is basically standard early 90s Euro dance music with a singer trying to throw us off the scent of banality every so often with the odd unexpected key shift or some dissonant warbling here and there. She seems to be drawing from a melodic palette that often doesn't compute in my head. Occasionally it works, like Big Time Sensuality also. For the most part though, she wants to give us something new, but all I'm getting is a headache. I don't really know how to rate albums that I dislike on the whole but which have two good songs. This is probably closer to a 2.5, but I'll give her a 3 for being different (and attractive)
Definitely unique. Ive been listening to Human Behavior for a long time and would never have guessed it came out in 93 The Anchor Song is definitely my favorite. Bjork has an incredible voice and she brings serious merit to every track. Bass drum work was glorious on this album Outside of Anchor Song, I dont think any track really sticks with me. Theres a little too much variety here. 3 stars and I might dig into other Bjork albums
Not quite as accessible as Mitski but this took me to a similar place. Started out thinking I am really not a Bjork guy, but think Big Time Sensuality is where I was like, hey I could get into this. Such a crazy blend of styles. Still a little too unstructured to come back to often but liked the ride. Just walked by a bumper sticker that said “STOP HONKING. I’m trying to figure out what the Cocteau Twins are saying.” Thanks to this project for helping me understand that joke.
The only things I know about Bjork that her voice is transcendent. She's in one of the hardest-to-watch films you've ever seen. And she went ballistic on some photographer at the Bangkok Airport when the woman got too close to her son. Definitely not uninteresting, like this album.
First song starts off groovy with a nice beat. Sounds quite unusual, yet somewhat ethereal. Mixed feelings about the song. Second song starts haunting, ambient, funky, with extraterrestrial vibes. Somewhat soothing, with a myriad of emotions. Makes me feel conflicted and confused as it progresses. Towards the end, sounds a bit better than before. Third song starts off pretty nice. Relaxing and chill vibes. Not bad. Brian Eno vibes. The only 'comforting' song so far. Fourth song starts off groovy and jazzy, transitioning to house music. Vocals are giving a weird feeling. Fifth song starts off magical with the guitar, comforting jazzy ambience/vibe. Sixth song starts jazzy and funky, house music. Much better than the previous criticized song. Much easier to listen to. Seventh song starts off synthwave, really nice. Vocals are still quite odd to listen to. Melody is nice. Nothing more. Eighth song starts off jazzy and soothing, vocals are weird and make me uncomfortable. Ninth song starts soothing, relaxing and haunting. Melody progression is sustained and by that becomes slightly boring. Tenth song begins nicely. Consistent melody and beat. Could be better. Eleventh and last song starts off nice and jazzy. Overall, pretty good. I'd give a 6/10 rating, and 3 out of 5 stars.
3.5 - not my fave Bjork but she's never not interesting
I'm actually quite surprised that this list has 4 different Bjork's albums. And with the general consensus I can announce - I'm not a fan of her music. It's different, original, as quirky as it can get, but it's just too over the top for me. I appreciate her ideas and courage, but it's not music I will ever enjoy.
Weird and very innovative for 1993. I wanted to like it more than I did. My heart remains open to future Björk. Special shoutout to "There's More to Life Than This (Recorded Live at the Milk Bar Toilets)" for its unusual approach (being recorded live from the Milk Bar toilets).
Alright, something a bit different but 2 days later struggling to remember it
This was good album, I liked this one.
Deliciously bizarre as I knew it would be. Not exactly an easy or pleasant listen, but there is something addicting about her voice and delivery. I'd say my favourites are Violently Happy and Play Dead. Also rate the timpani riff in the first track haha
Bjork has such a unique sound... but her albums sound much the same. What I'd like is to listen to a number of her albums and make a choice at which one I most like. This would probably not be the one. All I can hear is, "yep that's Bjork" without noting much difference between this and other albums of hers. I really love her work on Dancer in the Dark. 3.5/5
Bjork is definitely a true artist but some of her records are a little too all over for me. There's some club songs. There's a song with only harp that's like Joanna Newsom. Definitely worth listening but I think her records only improve on her style "everything and the kitchen sink and the fridge and the garden shed and a bunch of random styles/instruments" methodology from this point forward.
I now see why people still talk about this album 30 years later. This as a proper debut album is beyond insane. It's a couple songs that miss on here, but songs like "Venus as a Boy" and "Come to Me" are very solid tracks that stand the test of time. I have no idea what she was on when she made the hits on this album, but I need some of it.
Original, eclectic, sometimes nonsensical. There is nobody like Björk. Her music reflects her creativity and her unique, poetic mind. I love the clarity and rasp in her voice, they both balance each other out well.
Good, though kinda aimless, so I doubt I would listen to it again.
Quirky is a good word to describe Björk. Mostly dance/electronica/house music that was quirky, but OK to listen to. Human Behaviour and Play Dead stuck out for me. The Anchor Song was unique with the saxophones (I think they were saxophones). I can understand why some would not like this one, but I did not mind listening to it.
I like the voice, but whether the song hits or misses is down to the backing behind it. The clubby techno vibes of songs like big time sensuality work better than the more scaled back and experimental sounds. I took a little diversion into the sugarcubes after listening to this so it made some impact.
Quite a debut. I had no idea Nellee Hooper was involved. What works well is the pace of the album. The running order is perfect, an often over-looked feature these days.
Human Behavior, Venus as a boy and There’s more to life than this was interesting. I enjoyed those. The rest was not bad. Definitely better than Vunicura 1001 album worthy: Yes - 43/75
Björk's vocals - or the music itself - don't resonate often enough for me to love this, but this is undoubtedly singular and when it does strike a cord it strikes a totally unique one.
Yeah. Björk just ain’t for me.
I see the vision. Was a journey. Ultimately a little too out there for me to dig the music
Intriguing.
liked songs: Human Behavior, Aeroplane, Come To Me, Play Dead I really like Björk's voice on this album; there's very heavy Kate Bush influence which works well. The sort of house music underneath, unfortunately, isn't really my thing. I appreciated the more adventurous tracks. 3
Never listened to Bjork. It was weird, in a good way.
Mostly weird and experimental. Some tracks are called music only because an instrument is being played. As someone else commented, the backing tracks can be great. It starts to fall apart when she caterwauls, wails, and croaks the vocals. For all that, it's not as bad as I expected it would be based on her public persona.
For alternativt til tider. Fin stemme! Klagete stemning.
An alright album, a mix of songs I liked and those that I didn't. I liked Aeroplane the most.
Love a bit of jazz, just wasn't completely for me.
Interesting but not to my tastes
Zanimiv ampak ni to zame
• 3/5 • liked it better than I remembered from the original release • I like the overlay of her sensibilities over the house/dance influences
Liked the ending
cool
Elektro Pop with quirky singing style, strange tempo, frequent langourous drift that fails to deepen mood and instead the longer it goes undermine the themes. Still very different to the 400 something albums on the list so far.
Classic Bjork album.
I seem to like the idea of, and the artist Björk, better than her music. I really like her eccentricity and she’s got a great voice. The album starts with the banging Human Behaviour, and that’s the absolute highlight, along with Come to Me. Not too much into clubbing.
I'm not mad at it.
3.5
Not as good as I remember, but still great.
So many interesting tidbits here. Not sure it came together for me, though.
Not my favourite Björk. The quiet tracks are nice, but the percussive ones mainly sound dated.
Blind album, know the name and had another album on the list first. I expected so much more since I so many people bring Bjork up, and I was let down. Unbiased rating, honestly a 3. For the hype behind ti's artist and me being let down, I would give it a 1.
I’m honestly torn on this one. Do I like it? Is it irritating? Is it catchy? Is it excessively quirky? The answer seems to be yes, or no, depending on the track. Björk has a way of creating music that’s impossible to ignore—her voice is undeniably unique, and her fusion of electronic beats with organic sounds feels ahead of its time. There’s no denying the boldness of her approach, but at the same time, it’s easy to find myself wondering if it crosses the line into being excessively “quirky.” Some of the tracks really pull me in with their infectious rhythms, while others have a somewhat grating, experimental edge. It’s a challenging listen, not in the sense of being difficult to appreciate, but in navigating whether I’m fully embracing its oddities or finding them a bit much. At the end of the day, I think I’ll settle on a 3/5. It’s an album I respect, but I’m not sure I’m ready to call myself a full-fledged fan just yet. Score: 3/5
The range of influences is so wide there's bits of pop, electronica and jazz. Some of the tracks are avant-garde ballards and some sound like house tracks written by poncey art students. All the different elements are all linked by Björk's really distinctive voice, which provides a nice consistency to the album. I can see some people turned off by her vocals but once I got used to them I found them very enjoyable.
Seems cool. Not all great
liked parts, but couldn't really get into it
More like a 7/10.
Interessant musikk. La til to låter på min spilleliste.
This was fun to listen to. Inventive and unique. I especially loved the title, “Violently Happy”
Aurora did it better
The music is good, but Icelandic Yoko Ono strikes again.
I think I can remember many beautiful things by Björk. But somehow I can't think of any at the moment. Well, I didn't particularly like the debut album Debut. Björk's voice is great. But I'm not impressed by the music. The piece Violently Happy got on my nerves at the end. 3/5
Very different and strange, but not altogether horrible.
Jazzy, electronic vibes. Not baf
The first two songs were so good I was very hopeful for this album. The first half was solid then it turned into more Bjork bullshit in the second half.
Simple and wierd, just how i like Bjork, just can't enjoy it to its full extend, since i felt like i should just relisten to Vespertine
Not as wacky as I was expecting.
3 stars for the 3 songs I liked. Hated the rest
It’s good. Holds up well. Has some great songs. But is definitely an acquired taste.
There are certain albums that you need to be in the right mood for. Today I am in the right mood. Love the voice and the overall quirky feeling
This was an ok album. I was hoping for something a bit deeper but felt is was pretty straightforward euro pop music. I didn’t have time for a second listen so maybe I missed some complexity. 3/5
I liked it! It's not on the same level as the rest of my 4 stars as far as personal enjoyment goes so I had to give it 3 stars. But it's a good album!
I liked this better than Vespertine. Still not really my thing but it was alright.
I don't love Bjork. She's clearly very talented, and this album is varied and interesting, but I'm not sure that it's actually that great
warm, deep, and lustrous - not too many memorable songs, but some lovely vibes and grooves
Beautiful voice. Very choppy singing style where she seems to sing against the beat of the songs instead of with it. In some ways it's hypnotic. In some ways it's abrasive.
Definitely not boring. Always interesting. Sometimes it works. Sometimes it doesn't. Kind of have to be in the mood to listen to Bjork.
I first heard Bjork when she was with The Sugarcubes. Life’s Too Good is a phenomenal album and should be included on this list. There is nothing like her voice and it sounds phenomenal on this album. I most enjoy her upbeat songs like Human Behavior. Good stuff!!
This is my third Björk album to review, after Vespertine (4 stars) and Medúlla (2 stars). I really have no idea what to expect from this album, but I think Björk is incredibly talented, so at least I know I'm going to hear something interesting and unique. As an added bonus, I think this will be something nice to listen to on Election Day here in the states, as I resist the urge to eat my weight in cookies and ice cream to ease my anxiety. I thought this album was pretty good. My opinions of Björk as a musician are still very much positive. This album is 100% her creative vision, and for a debut solo album, she took a lot of stylistic risks, which I applaud. Those risks didn't always pay off for me personally though; I enjoyed the songs that were more heavily influenced by dance music than the songs that were more art pop in their sound. Songs like "Crying" and "Big Time Sensuality" were really fun to bop along too; their melodies were really infectious, and Björk's vocal style gave them a unique sound. "There's More to Life Than This" was my favorite song on the album. I loved the crowd noises, and the way the music would fade in and out was absolutely brilliant. It felt like being taken on a journey, and I loved every minute of it. Songs like "Aeroplane," "Violently Happy," and "Venus as a Boy" weren't really my jam; I think I got so used to the other songs that were driven more by traditional hooks that it was tough to enjoy songs that were a less structured. Still, this was a nice album to listen to, and I'm curious as to how I'll feel about the last Björk album that I'll get to review.
Venus as a Boy and Human Behavior are awesome. The rest is ethereal björk vibes that I would expect. Never really heard the sexual undertones to her songs until I really listened lol
I feel like im traveling in different worlds. Maybe there is like a story through this album but idk. Something about love and wishing to have a child? Dont think ive ever listened to Björk and im guessing she has a spesific singing style? Come to me was probs fav Venus as a Boy also good The last song???
I liked it well enough and suspect it should’ve gotten more of my attention than I was willing to spare.
It was ok
Nice voice, delivery similar to Billy Corgan
Some good beats
All over the place and very much of its time. But it’s a good start. I prefer Post from this period.
I am pretty sure I need to listen to this 5 more times to properly opine. I've tried to get into Bjork over the years, and this was the closest I've been to "getting" it. I can see why people like her, but it still didn't quite blow me away. This rating may change with time, and if nothing else, a closer listen has intrigued me enough to try again soon.
One of those odd albums. Pop but done a lot of different ways. Slow ballads, dance stuff, songs I can’t really describe. Overall I liked it, but probably a little weird to give a raving review.
Odd but good. Didn't really blow me away but enjoyed it all the same.
Okay
I LOVED this at the time, but on reflection it isn’t an amazing piece of work
👍
I respect it, I don’t enjoy it.
Bjork is such a talented song-writer. Every song she writes is unique in it's own right. So many interesting beats and timbres. Each song creates a different world encapsulating a myriad of instruments. "Come to Me" invents trip hop before it was a thing. "Like Someone In Love" is straight out of a 1960s movie score. "Big Time Sensuality" is an 80s hit. "Violently Happy" is 90s trance. Pretty sure there was a sea shanty in there somewhere, too. Issue is... I really don't vibe with her voice or vocal melodies. And if that's not right, then I can't fully get into it, as much as I love the instrumental elements of every song. Still couldn't put it lower than a 3 for how revolutionary her sound is and I bet this album alone has inspired countless future producers. 5.5 / 10 TLDR; really impressed, probably won't listen to much of it again.
I much prefer this album to her more recent music. Im gonna sound a like an old fart when I say that her earlier stuff is more accessible to older ears! Her voice is so beautiful, and her music sounds unique, but it's just not my thing. 3 stars
The moody and tense music is good and Bjork certainly brings plenty of drama to the table. It's quite left field unconventional although there's a club friendly sensibility. There's some interesting song titles, although I'll be damned if I can hear her lyrics. The jury is also still hung over how good her vocals are; I personally find her singing style grates to the point it's tediously annoying.
ok
I listened to this and the words that came to mind were unconventional and dissonance. Bjork is a unique person with a unique singing style. Her timing almost seems off sometimes on what she sings, but it's not. Her note selection sometimes seems to fall a bit outside of the chord structure of the backing music, but all of that serves to keep things interesting. I like the tone of her voice also when it sounds a bit raspy. This is definitely a 90s sounding album. This was my second time listening to it. It didn't blow me away but then it wasn't bad either. Human Behavior and Come To Me were standouts.
I really like her voice I just think the instrumentals are a bit sparse for my taste
good album! i like bjorks stuff, but sometimes its not what i need. 3.5/5
Some great tracks
It's Bjork bjork-ing out. Odd, lovely, and interesting. The first three songs are bangers, but then things get a bit spotty. Her voice becomes part of the lush soundscape at times. Highlights: "Human Behaviour" (cool percussive backing track to Bjork's mutters and wails), "Crying" (catchy piano line running through the song), "Venus as a Boy" (almost sounds like gamelan music rhythmically, I like the swooping strings), "Aeroplane" (the swinging horns give it a different flavor) Notable: "There's More to Life Than This" (the part where the music randomly lowers in volumes and her vocals are loud is off-putting)
Liked it, very 2000s/2010s indie teen movie. Probably wouldn’t play it through again but I didn’t mind it while it was on!
Very interesting album, not the best I've heard from bjork
Not my cup of tea really but enjoyed Violently Happy
There is only one Bjork. Some great ones on e here but not every song killed it.
2024-09-21...
About half of the album is great, the other half is awful. Favorite song: human behaviour.
I like Bjork, didn't really like the album.
Maybe because I’m not familiar with her work and it’s from a long time ago, I fail to appreciate the hype. But she does have a nice style of alternative music
Sometimes I like Bjork and sometimes I don't. This time I did.
It was alright.
More digestible than the last two. Still weird though.
6/10 - This bjork album really had the energy of bjork sings and then someone in a different room plays whatever they want on an instrument or two and then someone else finds some nature sound to throw in the background. They then submit the music without listening. Like someone in love is the epitome of this. I liked Big Time Sensuality and Play Dead. Somehow Bjork always makes something I like.
She has a great voice, though the child voice on certain songs was not necessary. I enjoyed the variety on the album.
She has a distinct voice and I thought the instruments she used was solid and unexpected
I thought Bjork was more slow, so I was a little surprised of the electric dance beats. I really enjoyed Human Behavior and One day. I was sitting outside on a beautiful day watching the clouds and that was the perfect setting for Venus as a Boy. Overall though, I don't know if I like her voice and vocal style with the techno sound. I love the voice and the sound separately. But I would love the songs with more folk sound to match her voice better. But she really has a beautiful calmness to her music that I appreciate.
No logro disfrutarla.
Some good tracks, with the standout being Human Behaviour for me. Will always suffer a bit from a slightly abrasive vocal style, so I can only enjoy it in small doses.
At first, got kind of whimsical/ chill vibes- like i would listen to it on a rainy day to relax. Towards the end some of them gave a disco/dance vibe that i liked
2nd half saved the first half. Favorite Track: Violently Happy
Legal, vou ouvir mais
Not bad, best Icelandic i heard
Part performance art, part dance album. Bjork really did something unique and interesting with this release. I listen to Human Behavior and Venus as a Boy a few times a year when it comes up in my mix.
Different in a good way. The album covered a range of emotions, and the singer matched that powerfully with her voice. I am impressed by how emotive she was.
3/5
I really wanted to like this a lot more than I did. Definitely preferred the Sugercubes' album, but I possibly need to try this again, but on first listen it's pretty repetitive and fairly grating with it.
I very much respect Björk’s work and sound, but I do not enjoy listening to it very much. She has such a unique sound and voice, so I am glad it is made, but it is not something I would revisit. Not to say it is bad, but it is exactly the sort of thing I would listen through and remember without ever feeling the urge to seek out more.
No. 225/1001 Human Behavior 3/5 Crying 3/5 Venus As a Boy 4/5 There's More To Life Than This 2/5 Like Someone In Love 3/5 Big Time Sensuality 2/5 One Day 3/5 Aeroplane 2/5 Come To Me 3/5 Violently Happy 2/5 The Anchor Song 3/5 Average: 2,73 I expected this record to be more experimental. More so it is a whimsical pop album. Didn't have a lot of songs that really excited me.
Idk this one kinda missed the mark for me. I felt about it the same way I’ve felt about other Bjork songs I’ve heard in the past. They’re weird and sometimes it works but sometimes it doesn’t. Some of the tracks here came off as though she was trying a little too hard to be weird. It wasn’t unenjoyable, but I just found it ok. I probably listened through this album 4 or 5 times seeing if maybe it would start to pay off, but it left me feeling about the same each time. Just meh. 3/5
3+ Stars (9/15)
Play Dead, Violently Happy, One Day
i knew her a little from later work, and a little from her time with the sugarcubes, but this is my first proper introduction. i was surprised at big time sensuality - that sound definitely existed in 1993, but it wasn't at all what i would've expected, based on the rest of the album. it was a fun change of pace. her voice is, of course, super interesting, and the fact her accent comes through so strong only adds to that.
Mildly interesting and inventive.
Björk is, and effectively always has been, one of my favourite artists. But this album has always evaded the ability to fully justify that. Yes, the three albums from her that followed this are undeniably excellent (particularly Post and Vespertine, which I believe to both be masterpieces), but Debut is also often lumped in with those releases, albeit to a slightly less exaggerated degree. I can see why, but I just find it dated in a way that for me, someone born over ten years after this album released, doesn't fully click. The synths sound like music you'd hear on a PS1 demo disc. There's More to Life than This, while the shift during the second verse is genuinely a really cool idea and adds very specific imagery that I don't actually hear in very many songs, just sounds kind of dire outside of that. It feels like parody of 90s dance music, but without any irony. There's also something like Anchor Song, and while Björk would go on to make some really beautiful minimalist closing songs on the next few albums, Anchor Song just feels quite empty. All that being said, Human Behaviour and Venus as a Boy are excellent songs that set an early precedent for Björk's talent as a musician and composer. I know I've spoken about things about this album that I dislike more than like about this album, but I do want to make it clear that for the most part, this album is perfectly fine. It's just difficult to talk about "perfectly fine". This album is very clearly overall more good than bad, but as a debut from an artist whose album streak after this would be consistently 9/10s at worst, it does feel underwhelming. 6.5/10
finally listening to bjork LETSGOOOOOO i didnt know her first album was in the 90s i thought she started out in like the 2010s im so uncultured lord mitski and bjork are two different people mitski and bjork are two different people mitski and bjork are two different people mitski and bjork are two different people mitski and bjork are two different people mitski and bjork are two different people mitski and bjork are two different people i love her voice it scratches my brain so good the album is ok but it is too slow for me my favorite song: crying
Much better than her more recent stuff. Listenable!
A bit more electronic-y than I typically enjoy, but I could see this one growing on me if I give it more listens.
Are all Björk albums one long song? This one and the other one we've had felt that way, but it isn't a bad thing. It was weird and mostly enjoyable which is about what I'm after from Björk
Apparently I gave our previous two Björk albums 3's also, which is a real shock to me. I thought I liked this one more than the previous ones and was planning on giving it a 2.5-3, but I guess I just have to do 3 and then this message. The danciest of the tracks were fun. It's still a lot of Björk.
It switches between not bad and a bit exhausting to listen to.
Wasn't very attracted to this one which was disappointing because I really loved the Sugarcubes album I got a little while ago and I was looking forward to hearing some of her solo work. There's still many of hers yet to go, so I'm looking forward to that. 2.5/5
Interesting album. I enjoyed it. Not something I would go back to though
I enjoyed the whole album. Very complicated and original. I'll listen to it again to understand it better. But I don't know that I will listen to it much more than that.
Very good voice, music is too experimental and weird for my taste. 2.7 stars
Her best album for sure
Me gustaron mucho Human Behaviour, Crying y Play Dead
Best Song: Human Behaviour. Björk does a lot of the lilting, rolling, and growling that I find so enchanting about her voice. Worst Song: The Anchor Song. A not altogether bad, jazzy song, but it feels more like a performance than a song. Overall: I'm once again struck by how powerful and diverse Björk's music is. That being said, this album has less passionate, revelatory music when compared to the previous ones on this list, and sometimes degrades to relatively standard club music.
Rock, 1993 -> 3
Interesting album, very different from much other types of music. In general I was not a fan of the dance up-tempo tracks. I think the rest was decent, but those felt out of place and didn't add anything since they weren't really any good. I mostly like Björks singing, it could as well have become too much and too weird, but it stays just on the right side of the line. Very melodic and exciting. I didn't really find any particular song that really stuck with me, which was what I was missing.
closer to 4 probably could i write poetry to this? n
I can take Bjork in small doses
Human Behavior is such a good song. I listened to it on repeat after I finished the album. Bjork's voice is amazing, but unfortunately the stars rarely all align like they do on that song. Lots of meandering with little structure to the rest of the album.
Enjoyed the nostalgia of this - from a time when you had to listen to your CDs over and again. But by god the girl still sounds a few shillings short of a full bag
Out of all the electropop albums on this list, this one is really solid. The first track is pretty epic and the ones that follow are solid as well. Björk has a really strong singing voice and shows it off really well here. Also the album is a reasonable length which I appreciate. I can't imagine going back to it, but it was a fun experience nonetheless.
Un pò particolare....
VIOLENTLY HAPPY
It was better than I was expecting, but it wasn't for me.
Initially I struggled with this album and I would still say it isn't one I plan to just put on and listen to. That said, I thought the album got better as it went on and the music grew on me. Definitely an interesting album.
A bit too electronic at the end
Not her best. But not her worst either.
Very interesting!
Not my mug of milo. Some good sounds, but very eclectic and weird.
I feel like one day Björk is going to click for me but she just hasn’t yet. I think this album is a good starting point though and I may return to it and give it another chance some day
Her voice is super unique and the songs all have different sounds. but still not my cup of tea. i’ll give a 3 tho bc it def belongs on the list and i respect it
Some standout tracks on the album, but would be interested to hear some of her later albums to get more of an appreciation
Although not the best Bjork album, we enjoyed this.
Absolutely timeless until a baseline hits and it’s dated instantly. I like Björk. Her voice is pretty incredible. So individual. But some of her music (most of it?) is objectively difficult to enjoy. Clever for being clevers sake. This isn’t too bad, though. Mostly pretty straight, with nice 90s house low key bangers.
Quirky album, lots of variety. I enjoyed the disco aspects on a lot of the songs. Bjork's voice is definitely unusual and a little off-putting at first but once I got used to it I enjoyed her style. Favorites: Venus as a Boy, One Day
By far the most enjoyable work by Björk that I've come across.
3-
It's alright. The big hits are great and "Venus as a Boy" is a genuine 10/10 song, but it sort of feels like something's missing. It's a bit too generic art pop for me. This was before she went insane and decided that one trillion bleep-bloop sound effects = good music (everything past Vespertine), but also before the Post/Homogenic golden period where she really hit that artistic sweet spot of "just weird enough". And wanna know the evil fucked up thing? This isn't even her debut. She's a liar. Re-release the album where she sings Beatles and Stevie Wonder covers as a 12-year old - Bjonk you coward.
In general I'm not a huge fan of Bjork, but this album is pretty good. She's really a remarkable weirdo, and I love weirdos.
Enjoyed Debut very much
Kind of meh to me. Not bad but not something I’m interested in.
This is my first Bjork album and it contains songs in a variety of styles that don't sound too bad. Some songs are calm and some songs are upbeat.
Hard to rate this on one listen (though have listened many times). Entirely enjoyable, perplexing, and otherworldly. 3.5
Björk on the road to Björkdom. A solid Debut.
Thought I'd never heard a bjork song before, only to be extremely familiar with Venus as a Boy from the chill playlist I listen to on repeat.
She's got a cool voice. Not my type of music though.
This is better than the other 2 Bjork albums this site has given me. Being her debut, a lot of it sounds like the Sugarcubes, who I liked a lot. I gave Medulla 3 stars, but I can't go to 4 with this one.
I like Bjork and this album is no exception.
It's Bjork. You either love her or hate her. I fall in the latter camp. I see why this is on the Must Listen to list, though. It is to ensure we get exposure to the best of every kind of genre, or non-genre, out there. Bjork is a non-genre, which means I need to be completely out of my mind to enjoy her. I'm not, so she gets a three for being really good at what she does. (She's probably the only one doing what she does).
Cool album but I couldn't listen to it regular
I thought this album was just okay it had some interesting melodies and it is definitely the perfect album for a club night but I just didn’t really connect to it. That’s not saying it’s bad but I think it’s just average.
Good debut
Very Chill
I had only known Björk via parody but man that parody was on point. I feel this is the music of a girl who would intimidate me in high school half because she's alluring and unique and half because I'm just so genuinely confused as to what's going on. This is odd but makes sense to be on the list.
Interesting for sure, inoffensive, tho I understand some are put off by her vocals. I don't think I will be convinced that this belongs on the list. I like what's happening, but I'm not of fan of these synths, I enjoy her voice. Okay, I changed my mind, this belongs. But still a 3 for me.
I like this, but don't connect to it as much as I had hoped. Very good album, but not doing quite enough for a four from me.
i like the way the boopy sounds feel in my brain if that makes sense
I like Bjork, but I like her in small doses.
We used to own the Sugarcubes debut album, so I'm very familiar with Björk's vocal sound, but have never listened to any of her solo albums. I guess Debut is the right one to start with. Most of the album is too electronic and experimental for me.
I liked this album, but didn't love it. Several of the songs started to click in for me on my 3rd listen, but it generally felt like a less fully relaxed version of Kate bush. The harp work, however, was awesome.
Some good, lots of meh
Mmmm, ok I guess
I liked this album some, kind of different 3 stars
Realized that I remember this album so fondly partly because of 1) how much 'Human Behavior' is still such a great song, and 2) my general love of Bjork. Otherwise, was shocked to find how thoroughly 90s a lot of this sounds, even with Bjork's always amazing vocals - and doesn't necessarily hold up all that well. To my ears, Bjork really let go of trends with Post, Homogenic and Vespertine, while staying within the parameters of typical song structure - (before she got really esoteric & jettisoned things like instruments entirely) and those 3 albums are much stronger for it. This one, while good, didn't really stand the test of time.
A very unique voice, that's for real. Besides of that i didn't find anything that makes this album special, but it good for a debut album.
First listen Saved 5/11 Top track: Venus as a Boy
Bjork has a hauntingly beautiful voice. She makes odd songs. They are not all pretty - some are even uncomfortable. Some are strikingly beautiful: melodic, rich, and well orchestrated. This album ranges from incredible songs, to the odd side of avant-garde. It is certainly memorable, and interesting, but may not be great...
Mellow
Iceland’s very own was far ahead of her time in 1993. Probably too far ahead, but nonetheless this record still carry’s its own weight in 2024 with songs like “Venus as a boy” and “human behaviour”. Listening through this album at times I felt like I was in a grimly lit back room of European warehouse waiting for an interaction with a Slovenian drug lord, and yet at other times I was just on the other side of that warehouse in an early 90s dance club dancing my worries away high on mescaline. Either way, this album is a bit of an anomaly for me. Not quite 4 stars because of its weirdness, but not quite 3 stars because it’s got these pockets of opal and excellence. 3.5/5 if I could vote it, I would
I liked this better than I thought I would. Eclectic and quirky with some interesting lyrics, it was a fun listen. I would listen to it again. Bright spots..."Come to Me" and "Violently Happy".
listened to again vastly artistic and still hard to listen to sometimes due to asynchronous composition techniques
Musik meist ok, Gesang nervt schnell
It’s cool
