Reviews (page 7 of 7)
I did not care for it.
Reading into the background of Suba they seemed to be quite influential in this very niche genre of 90s house/ jazz/ Brazilian samba music.....but despite initial intrigue I quickly got bored. Might be fun to listen to at a beach party in the background
I usually like Brazilian music but really struggled to connect with this for some reason. The beats got more interesting and inventive as the album went on, so it *just about* scrapes a second star.
I think this is an okay listen, but most of the tracks are just boring. Favorite tracks are Antropofagos and Ne Neblina.
Really long and weirdly experimental in a way that didn’t pan out super well in my opinion. Maybe another listen would help do it justice but I don’t wanna sit through this album again. 4/10
The album is lo-fi electronica mixed with Latin american beats. It would be good to have on in the background at a low-key dinner or a chill-sesh. Best: Abraço; Samba Do Gringo Paulista Worst: Antropófagos 2.5 Stars
Muzak anyone?
Good Lord
Not the worst elevator music I've heard.
Encapsulates everything I hate about pop music, except maybe that screaming in death metal and all that.
Snooze fest
"São Paulo Confessions is an album by the Serbian-born musician Suba" = nah
40 seconds into the first song I know this experience is going to give me an aneurism
I'm not a big fan of bossanova or late-90s chillout music. The combination is lethal.
I'm very surprised this album is on this list. It just sounds like incidental music in a property renovation show. Not for me at all
More crappy Electronica - Now with Brazilian flavor.
I couldn’t wait for this to be over. Wrong day for me to have this shopping for clothes at structure album.
YES! Presumably more Samba music! YES! SCORE! Let me get my dancin' shoes!! Oh baby! We're shuffling good! Woohoo!! AND IT HAS A WASHED OUT GREYSCALE LATE 90's CLUB TWIST!?!?! Teehee WOOHOO!! YIPPEEE!! My propeller on my hat is spinning wildly. My cheeks have never been rosier as I firmly grasp my comically oversized lollipop and solemnly samba shuffle to this amazing (!!!) and not at all repetitive vocal scatting! Once the vocals leave, I'm sure glad that these basic melodies and rhythms repeat forever! I wouldn't want to forget a single one!! Man, this truly is a golden age for albums and thankfully I heard this one before I died thirteen seconds after the needle lifted. My heart simply exploded from the sheer excitement of hearing Brazilian uhh "Tribal Ambient" (don't yell at me, look at RYM). Apparently this guy is also just a Serbian dude who fetishized South American culture. Surely his early death has nothing to do with this album's inclusion! It's just another monolith of musical mastery!!! 0 HIGHLIGHTS: PortuJeez this album is super!
baffling album. a bit trip-hoppy but i did not appreciate this one at all.
SO bored of being bored by this list
Serbian artist? Ok now this is the closest I'll get to having some Romanian representation on this list. I'll take it honestly. If u ask me I'd say "1001 albums you should listen to before you die" shouldn't mean "1001 highest critically acclaimed albums for pretentious fucks". In my opinion this project should have explored the world's music. Like, maybe music from Latvia or Bahrain or Ghana is banging and I'll never have any idea. This is just a rant unrelated to today's album. Now, the actual album. In my country there's no such thing as a "wine bar", but based on how many people say this is wine bar music I don't have any desire to go to such a bar. This music is so inoffensive it's outright boring. I can't imagine a context outside of background music just so you fill the silence while studying or painting or something. Personally, I'm never gonna listen to this again, not for me at all. It has some groove here and there, but it's not captivating my attention at all. At least it's not a threat to my ears, so I'll give it that. Not as bad as other 1 stars I gave. Just boring. I can't sit through it all.
Latin elevator music
BORING.
Tråkigt och stundtals irriterande, till och med som bakgrundsmusik.
This must be all over, "Expensive Looking Hotel Lobby" playlists
Didn't enjoy this. Samba acid jazz downtempo electronica? Nah
Considering that astonishing amount of good music created and produced in Brazil it is incomprehensible that this makes the cut. While the album has some ok moments, I think that often combining general traditional brazilian music with electronic music is not a good combination. It takes away from the earthiness and groove of those musical styles while pushing it further into elevator music territory. If you want to listen to something from Brasil, listen to Novos Baianos, Jorge Ben or Martinho Da Vila

Na ja
Clean, detached, kinda boring. 2 songs are sorta interesting but overall i’m not very impressed.
This felt never ending and I'm glad it's over, sorry!
2/3/26. Hmm... just thought this one was boring? It didn't seem like this album could decide what it wanted to be, which ended up as tame electronica with a little Brazilian influence. Swing and a miss for me; perhaps this review will age poorly.
Bloody hell two dull listens in a row. Too repetitive for me and quickly faded into background
Like avante garde Brazilian jazz. Very weird
Lo-fi jazzy electronica is definitely not my genre. While I didn’t hate this, it’s not something I’d ever choose to listen to. Also 100% makes me feel like I’m working in coffee shop filled with late 90s global village decor

Don't give up your day job.
Back to back horseshit early 2000’s electronica. Why is this on the list? I hate it.
Not my type of music.
Not great.
I'm positive this is competently produced and arranged, but for the most part, it's very much outside my wheelhouse and my patience quickly runs thin with it. Suba's story is quite tragic, though. 1.5/5
Headache music
Eh this isn’t for me. Sometimes it’s ignorable background music when I’m working and sometimes it’s distractingly not for me.
the tragic backstory is way more interesting and notable than the music itself, which unfortunately just mills around. too texturally ambitious to work as lounge music, sound design too muddy and sloppy to work as production porn, and structured too loosely to have memorable songs. deserves to be one of the 1001? i would easily swap this pick for a more interesting electronic album. hell, if you want something Brazilian for this niche, Amon Tobin is right there
Nope, can't do it. Too Jazzy
Too repetitive and ambient, not my taste
This BLOWS, I hate electronica
Not for me, sounded dull and repetitive!
I was waiting for this one to end, it’s instrumental which is fine but being an hour long with only attempts to make it exciting lead to a messy, banal and bland album.
Didn’t get interested in it
I can't do it ... We had such a good streak going!
Not for me
Not my thing
Not for me, kind of forgettable on first listen.
1/5 Suba lost me after track 2. Once again I'm reminded that music taste is subjective. It's boring music for people who don't care what they're listening to. The fact that it's very inoffensive as well is what offends me. Music should have grit, distinguishable style and sticking sound and lyrics. This album lacks all of that.
One of the albums ever. Too minimalistic for my taste, decent background noise for working. In my opinion this album does not deserve its place on the list, but I might be missing some backstory.
Too much noise. 1/5
bland, vapid and formulaic
Här och där finns små passager som väcker ett intresse. Men på det stora hela kunde det lika gärna ha varit bakgrundsmusik på något hippt spa eller nått surdegsbageri i ett genomgentrikerat område. Musik som varken gör till eller från.
I did not like this
Distressingly failing to be any of the attempted Genres (Electronic, Latin, Acid Jazz, Downtempo). Leaving me with dull being on hold in a contact line music.
Much of the Brazilian music this project has introduced me to has been really interesting and worth my while. This one was not that…. I kept thinking it would get interesting when a cool rhythm or vocal passage would start, but it just never did. Absolutely slog to get through.
I sometimes feel like I'm being a bit harsh with some of the scores I'm giving these albums. This is a bang average album at best. If there were only 1,001 albums in existence that might mean it gets three stars... but there are obviously a LOT more albums out there, and we are supposed to be looking at the most essential 1,001 of the millions out there. So, just one star. Sorry. Bang average just shouldn't be on this list in the first place, unless it is notable in some other way, which this really isn't.
Not my genre
Really boring. Does not belong on this list. Giving it my first one.
The background sound of all clothes shops in the 90s. Not a recommendation. If this unnerving nonsense was on whilst I was trying on a new pair of chinos I would leave immediately. Less salsa dip more sheep dip
Music for wine bars, totally inoffensive and dull 1*
Never heard of before, and very unlikely to revisit again in future. Just not my thing at all. Felt like elevator music with occasionally raised BPM
Had to speed listen, again. My Serbian is a little rusty.
Not for me
Damn this week has been bad. This album doesn’t make it better either, this was so shit. It’s just noise, it sounds awful and it sounds like when in the movies there’s like a stereotypical tribal ceremony that no one wants to point out is probably depicted in a racist way. Anyway this sucks.
eh
Repetitive and slightly annoying. Is it even meant for active listening? Don’t know the music tradition it is drawing from, so hard to appreciate.
Brazilian electronic music....what's not to love! Why are there so many Brazilian acts in this list? This sounds like someone put words to the opening notes of the Pee Wee's Playhouse theme song. Electronica is not a genre that I appreciate. The traditional Brazilian samba bits are the best part of the album...makes me envision Carnival. This cannot end soon enough. This is the music of a hipster churrascaria or a nightclub in a mixed income neighborhood or the soundtrack to a Brazilian neo-noir thriller. No one in Brazil could have been asking for this...to paraphrase Hank Hill, they aren't making electronica better, they're making samba worse. Abraco hits like a car alarm with some backwards singing interludes. It continues to get worse from beginning to end.
Just elevator music
Not for me
Blind album and artist. Nope.
Couldn’t do it
Perhaps a bad artist saved by a good producer to make a hardly tolerable album. This should be on anyone’s must listen to list, except teaching what not to do.
Garbage experimental music again. 1/5
Pretty bland 90s music that would be used in the background of some try-hard small town wine bar.
En jaksanut kuunnella kovin kauaa. Ei osu.
p839. 1999. 1 star. Background music for shopping at Ikea. Why is this on the list?
Muzaaaak
1.5
1.5
Seriously boring. Lacking in dynamics and doesn't sound organic. Also I am not a fan of Brazilian music generally. 1 star
São Paulo confessions that by themselves are more wretched than the crime. All in all a bunch of noisy Latin and sterile, listless electronica and downtempo styles that don’t mesh well at all. Some tracks are technically ok whilst others are just jarring and awful. I give it 1 star for not being essential listening at all and for being murderously long and dull.
Turns out electronica drags jazz down hard
they combined discordant electronic music with bossa nova but no one asked if they really should. in all seriousness, this takes the fun, calm, and smooth sounds of brazilian music and makes it feel like a panic attack. really really not my thing.
Why is this on here
1.41
Well this was atrocious. Very relieved when it ended, although I did get a bit excited in the final song when I heard the PS2 noises that Chris pointed out.
No thanks
Man, who listens to this?
This was weird.
Elevator music
Terrible
This reminds me of the Friday night drum circles that would happen in Asheville, NC when I used to live there. Infectiously fun for five minutes, then the novelty begins to wane and it becomes droning. This is the second album this Serbian has had on this list (the other being the one he died trying to save from a studio fire), and though I appreciate the tragedy of his life cut short quite literally for his art, I just don’t see anything more than techno-laced samba. Forgive me; I’d rather that some other 90s club scene albums would have made this list.
The singer sounded a bit like a Brazilian version of Sade - absolutely terrible. The album itself was at times boring and at others downright unpleasant, the strange clicking sounds were the most annoying. At times I thought someone was knocking on my window - very intrusive. Awful music and a waste of just over an hour of my time. Thankfully I know to never listen to this abject shite ever again.
Really very dull
Did not know like
What a bunch of balloney
Listened Before? N Many of the songs on this record have less than 100k listens on Spotify. Is it an undiscovered gem or trash? I don't know because I don't have the patience to listen to over an hour of Portuguese. Added to Library? N Songs added to playlist: Tantos Desejos
Lazy, repetitive crap
What if Nujabes, but bad? Total snoozefest. Some of the vocalists were cool, but this was a slog to get through.
Entirely too repetitive and never really exciting. Maybe if you were at a dance club on acid this album would be good.
Meh
This sounds like you’re in a Starbucks and the only thing they’re serving is MDMA Not my thing
Again, not my bag. I can see how it spawned a million mass produced tracks known as ‘chillout’ and that’s a million tracks I don’t like. There is clearly skill on this work, but I want songs and lyrics, not just monosyllabic riffs
This was hit or miss for me. The first track (Tantos Desejos) the vocal on the long holds sounds couple semi-tones out of key which messes with my brain significantly. The second track (Você Gosta) is interesting but sounds like the mario star-power-up music during the syncopated bits and that's hilarious to me. The rest of the album was equally confusing. There were moments of "cool hip coffee-house-vibe" and then moments of "what the actual eff?". Not something I'd seek out and I couldn't make it through the entire album sadly.
Did this make the list because we needed a best album for the genre of background music. This is nothing more than something you hear at an upscale place and say oh that sounds cool because it fits the vibe only to never think of the song again. 3.5/10
Not my cup of tea.
Uhh, yeah, sure. THIS had to be listened to before I died….said no one ever. Latin Prog Synth Alt something or another.
Meh. Pretty forgettable. 1.5/5
good background music but some of the use of out of tune, twangy instruments was piercing. dislike.
Not for me. I feel like I should like it but I didn't. 1 star.
There's a vibe to it, but it's hidden under a bunch of stuff that's bad. Just not for me.
En ihan ymmärrä tätä, ainakaan levyn pituutta. Loppujen lopuksi tää on vain yksi ysärin elektroninen junnauslevy. Sentään vähän bossa novalle kumarrusta, joka tuo omaleimaisuutta. Aika vähän.
Musiikkia, joka on tarkoitettu unohdettavaksi jo kuunneltaessa.
Boring
Interesting to hear once but not something I'd listen to again.
Just not my thing
Not my thing at all. I thought her voice was good, but the album way too long. Some songs I thought the overall vibe was OK, but this isn't really anything I could see myself playing, other than for this list. I'll give it a 1.5. Mainly for the release date of 1/1/1999. I'm now going to play a few tunes by Prince and get my head straight. 1.5
Not really sure why this is on the list. Possibly to fill some quota of South American music maybe?! Either way it did nout for me. Coffee shop background music, minus interesting bits. Was expecting something that reminded me of being in Brazil, but this has more vibes of weak coffee and expensive Italian biscuits
Brazilian instrumental background music. Not particularly interesting to me, listened while working and only it distracted me a couple of times when there were some discordant noises that didn't really work. It might sonically capture sao Paulo really well, can't say, never been, but it wasnt a great listen so regardless it get a 1.
Antropofagus is a bit of a laugh. A hard listen.
Long and largely uninteresting. To be fair, as background music some of it wasn't too bad but there's other background music I'd much prefer. Not sure why it's on the list
1.5
I gave it a try and nope
Doesn't particularly stand out.
2.5/10. sonaba bien on paper mezclar weas brasileras con electronica y weas pero real este album es como el pico. suena cmo musica de restaurant caro pero como el dick. enbola hay algunas canciones q se salvan pero son 0 inspiradas pa mi gusto.
If I spoke Spanish I still wouldn’t listen to this album.
Did not liek.
FFS really
I thought this would be really fun, but I was wrong, dull and repetitive. Defo better Latin music out there.
Combines aspects of electronic music that I don't like with Latin music that I don't know much about. Not something I'd ever put on of my own accord.
Just bored by it.
Nothing good in here at all for me
..
Nah
Bad. A truly bad album.
