Reviews (page 5 of 7)

Trip-Hop feeling combination of drum-n-bass beats, electro beeps & boops, and jazzy acoustic instruments (lots of piano in particular and some acoustic guitar leads) with that classic airy unresolved almost a-melodic Brazilian singing. The percussion parts are cool: lots of hand-drum fills in between the beats. Wierd that a potentially unique Yugoslav new wave x Brazilian jazz collaboration ends up sounding so generically 90s chill electronica - maybe something lost a move away from synths and into digital production?

I'd say this is an above average "electronic" album. The Brazilian drum beats and odd instrumentation at least make it interesting. It's a 3.49, rounded down.

Had some nice ambient tones, overall really chill and enjoyable. Nothing overly memorable though but it was a decent listen. 3 stars

Thought this would be worse than what it is. It's still not anything I want to hear again. Take a 3, friendo.

Very 90s cyber cafe

Different

Cool and chilled out Serbian trip hop that would be suited to a trendy and relaxed late night lounge bar. Let's order some rakija and drink to the finest Balkan music I've heard since Rambo Amadeus covered the Simpsons theme tune at Exit Festival 2006. Rating: 3.5/5 Playlist track: Felicidade Date listened: 23/11/23

Not bad, inoffensive and a pleasant listen with some good moments here and there.

In one ear and out the other.

There some good parts of this album, but there were also some that were a little too strange. 3/5 Probably won’t listen again

The first 1/2 dozen songs are pretty good, sort of latin/samba sounding. Pleasant enough if somewhat background-y. But the further I went, the more the electronic themes came more forward, and the less I liked it. And by the last song I was ready to be done. Some of these songs would be good on a playlist, but others would be skips. Certainly nothing I feel the need to actually own. 3/5

Music is good but never grabbed me.

This was pretty cool. Like classical jazz edm. Nice stuff to just listen to.

Nice sounds. First listen to this crowd.

Not what I expected from an album titled "São Paulo Confessions." Suba delivered an unanticipated Brazilian album by... not being Brazilian. But a Serbian-born musician moving to Brazil and collaborating with local artists in making an album that defies prediction worked very well. Although there are hints of sounds I would associate with trip hop, it isn't electronica mixed with hip hop. Instead, Suba's electronica is mixed with jazz, funk, and soul for some kind of combination of acid jazz and downtempo electronica. There's definitely a Latin influence in parts, and some samba drums on occasion, but it all feels part of a diverse whole. "São Paulo Confessions" is very chill and a pleasant surprise. "São Paulo Confessions" could have been a breakout for Suba, but he tragically died the same month it was released attempting to save his recordings from a fire in the studio.

Fun at times. Also quite strange at times. You know. Like the sideways head tilt, raised eyebrow thing where you ask yourself, “Is thi the same thing I was enjoying a song ago.” Lots of cool fusion sounds going on though.

Nice for electronic music. Sad story about the musician dying young. Would listen again.

Nice variation, hope there's more like this. Gonna give it another listen.

Very nice, but each song seems to have its own overly repetitive portion.

Very chill, a few really cool ideas sprinkled in. 5/10

Not what I expected but really engaging, layered and compelling.

It's okay. I do love a good Brazilian female singer, but at the same time it's too long and repetitious. I enjoyed parts of it but probably won't listen again. 2.5 stars, rounding up to 3.

Not bad - probably wouldn't choose to listen to, but cool sounds

Someone needs to come along and turn 3 of the half baked tracks into one really good one. Not without its moments, but often left me feeling like it was unfinished or out of ideas. High 2 rounded up to a 3.

Extremely interesting. Like DJ Shadow's *Endtroducing*, except that *Sâo Paulo Confessions* uses its own "abstract" and nocturnal vocabulary to explore the many sides of Brazilian / Latin music, instead of the ones of hip hop. On another (sad) note, Suba's fate is simply tragic. So heartbreaking that someone so talented died so young (and trying to save tapes he had recorded to boot). Heartbreaking. I don't have a lot of time for a proper review today, unfortunately. 8/10 for general purposes (5+3), which translates to a 3/5 for the ones of this list. Number of albums left to review: 458 Number of albums from the list I find relevant enough to be mandatory listens: 254. Albums from the list I *might* include in mine later on: 128 (including this one) Albums from the list I will certainly *not* include in mine (many others are more essential to me): 162

Good album with some good grooves. But in the end none made me want to hit repeat.

-Didn’t write a BL- AL: a very compelling debut (and last) album from an artist I knew nothing about. The beats were amazing. Some of the singers were good but there were certainly stronger and weaker cuts on the album. FT: “Antropofagos”, “Felicidade” 3/5

I noticed the deficiency as I started listening to jazz: An ear-blindness to all but the stereotypically blinding expressions of Latin music. Here, it feels like a possible handicap. Suba's production is quiet, the colors of aural São Paulo don't pop, and plenty of subtlety remains to go around.

Funky world beqt vibe

Most unexpected. It started with an infectious rhythm and kept is going continuously seamlessly drifting between instrumental and vocals.

Great background music while I was working. I feel I'll equipped to otherwise evaluate this, way out of my depth

Perhaps if your a fan of the niche sub-genre of electronic salsa/mambo music, this album means something to you. To me, it's ok background music. Would choose to listen again, but it isn't a bad record. Just not my taste.

Very nice!

Some great tunes, but an album is a big serving and my appetite dropped off pretty quickly.

Very chilled vibes this passed me by without incident

Hard to not like this. Very easy on the ears

Tantos Desejos, Antropofagos, Felicidada, Um Dia Comum, Abraco, and Pecados de Madrugada. Love the Samba parts and the bongos. Feel like it went on forever and could have been a decent amount shorter. 7/10

voce gosta. ez 3

Kinda entertaining background music, but a lot of it just passed me by

Groovy and a little funky. Just fine. 3.5

I was surprised by this album because I started it and looked at its length and thought that I was gonna hate it by the end. Weirdly, while I still thought it was really long, I didn’t totally despise it even though most of these ambient electronica albums wear me down too much by the end. This one I was fine with for probably 80% of it. There were some duds but mostly fine.

Interesting

Nothing to dislike, foreign modern electronic/jazzy.

not my style but ok

Bijzondere muziek. Sommige nummers doen me denken aan "Techno Trance vol. 3" uit de jaren '90. Andere nummers zijn weer veel zweveriger. ***

Pretty chill, good morning music. Could be played at setbreak

Didn’t leave too much of an impression - I wasn’t overly wowed but didn’t find myself bored either. Warrants a relisten to make sure I caught everything this time around, but I’m not sure I’ve ever felt more middle of the road about an album here than this

Really interesting story for the artist. Latin acid jazz is an interesting genre. It started off really strong, and then the middle was kinda of forgettable, but then ended strong again. Overall I enjoyed it, and it had a couple good ones, but nothing mindblowing. 3/5 Favorites: Tantos Desejos, Felicidade, Sereia, Least Favorites: Na Neblina, Antropofagos,

Interesting Album with some good songs

First couple songs on this album were really selling the mood of a night drive through a large metropolis, which Sao Paulo is, supposedly. Melancholic, electronic downtempo beat mixed with a rather classic latino theme and portugese vocals were overwhelmingly atmospheric, and sounded very fresh, even though it's been 24 years since "Sao Paulo Confessions" debuted on the lists. I have never heard of Suba before, but his background is really interesting, a Serbian producer/composer, mostly in electronic genres, falls in love in Sao Paulo and Brazilian culture, which is encapsulated on this very unique record. I was ready to be infatuated by it, but after first great impression the mood grew tiring and repetitive, the spark was gone, only redundant noise, which I couldn't connect with. It's certainly a record that deserves to be on every list for its uniqueness and sincerity, but unfortunately I couldn't feel the album in the end. But it certainly deserves another chance in the future.

I think This album is a 2.5 right in the middle. There are some songs that I think are 4 star, Felicidade and Sereia.

Pleasantly eclectic. Some of it sounds like something out of a wet dream, which is about as high of a compliment I can give a new album. Enjoy!

Inte brasilianskt!! :(

An interesting mix of electronic music with jazz/funk and Brazilian styles. It would take more listens for me to figure out what I really think of it.

Definitely some sumptuous sounds in this Brizilian, bosanova flavoured electro dance album. Wish it was more Bossa Nova and less electro dance beat but still some gorgeous music here. Some of the vocal contributions are absolutely lush. The whole album can best be decribed as lush. 3.5 stars

Liked it much more than expected. 3/5

Very chill

I'm really not sure what to rate this. I didn't dislike it but I'd never listen to it again, given the choice. I guess it's interesting, kinda? It never strays too hard into electronica or samba to get too annoying and the musicianship is solid so there's that... It's good for what it is. I just don't know that what it is needs to exist.

São Paulo Confessions is an obvious traveling-at-night-album. In that regard I was quite lucky, as I got to experience this during an hour long train ride at night - there was even a woman that got arrested next to me. Couldn’t have asked for better circumstances for this album. Sometimes you got to learn about the true nature of a place through the eyes of foreigners. And Serbian-born Suba sure does his absolute best at providing us with a glimpse into the city that he somehow fell in love with. It’s excellent in glimpses but I still feel that it lacks in certain parts - maybe just like São Paulo does? But in conclusion… Where is that Suba biopic?!

Nice background music to the day. Got me through cleaning the grout on the shower.

Nice vibe. Great to work to; great for ambiance. There’s only a few tracks I can imagine myself sitting down and focusing on.

Decent mood music, sad back story.

It’s not insulting to be rated less than average, I just don’t enjoy it. The female vocals are pleasing. My mind wandered quite a bit and I got bored. Highlights: -

I don't have much experience or enough knowledge to talk about various genres of electronic music... but I know what I like, and I do like this. There's a chill (downtempo?) vibe that makes it excellent semi-active background music. The vocals I'm back and forth on.... occasionally a bit distracting and only works best when easing into the background and letting the groove take over. Not my forte but I would definitely listen to this again. 7/10 3 stars.

Electrónica.

This was an interesting album to listen to. Some types of electronica I enjoy, some types I find interesting but don't know how I feel about it, and of course, some that I don't like. This album had songs that fit into all three categories. I'd have to listen to it again to really know how I feel about it. Scale: 5 - My absolute favorites. 4 - Albums I like. 3 - I enjoyed listening to it but wouldn't seek it out. 2 - Didn't like. 1 - Absolute shit.

Backgroundy, loungy, pleasant enough. The music that auto played after soothed me into a nap.

A good listen in the background to get some work done

68/100: Eh, this one wasn't really for me. I appreciate music like this, and when I'm in the exact right headspace, I even personally enjoy it sometimes. I guess I wasn't in the right headspace for this album, or maybe the fact that it's also in Spanish creates yet another barrier of entry for me. Either way, I found myself forgetting I was listening to this album while it was still playing. I doubt I'll explore this artist further or revisit the album again in the future.

It's good background music, but hard to pay attention to

I was surprised how much I liked this one. I think it might be jazz? Never heard of it before. I feel like I had more to say, but I can’t remember what.

Different!

Nice atmospheric, electronic, latin sounds.

Very relaxing and chill. I'm finding I like this sort of thing more and more in today's toxic world.

Very interesting album. To be honest I would rather hear the cool music Suba is sampling, but I do think the texture of this album is very interesting. 3 stars

Why is this person whispering in my ear? This album is also fine. nothing in particular is grabbing me.

Prefs: Você Gosta, Antropofagos, Felicidade, Um Dia Comum (Em SP), Samba de Gringo Paulista Moins pref: Sereia

Was unfamiliar, but really enjoyed it.

Brazilian/acid jazz fusion by a Serbian! Who knew? Great chill sound, very evocative. Starts a little flat, but improves as it goes. By track 3 I was all in. Fave Songs: Samba Do Gringo Paulista, Antropófagos, Sereia, A Noite Sem Fim, Na Neblina

That was some weird latin lounge. Not entirely convinced by it, but there are some interesting musical ideas in there and I could vibe with the overall latin sound. I'll be generous and give this a 3.

Glad to hear this one. Never heard of it before and it was very nice all the way through. There wasn’t anything unique or surprising about it so I can’t really give it a high score but I’d listen again. 3.5 stars

Not totally my thing. I don't really know music terms so I'm sure there's a better way to describe this. I liked some of the "music" and production, but generally prefer something with more lyrics. Antropofagos gud. I might actually listen to this one again. Looking up what this means has me a little...confused at the name. Felicidade is the most listened to song of the album on spotify by quite a bit, but I was pretty meh on on it. Not really a fan of the singers part in the song in particular. I think I would like it if it were a song in a particular context, like a part of a game that matched the sound, but listening to it on its own isn't for me. I have no idea what the guy in Abraco said, but damn that guy's part of the song was probably my favorite part of the album. His voice and delivery over the music were really great to me. Random, but starting at around 1:45 in the last song reminded me of that weird cyriak cow animation: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FavUpD_IjVY Overall enjoyed the album more than I expected. Even still, I likely won't listen to it again or seek out anything more like it.

It alright as background music.

Is it just me or is it that the only deviation allowed here from the western-English speaking hegemony is Brazil? As for the music, it's of that "clean" non offending electronic genre that's probably best for background duties at one's favourite hang out place.

pretty good, i dig it

Pretty good grooves, enjoyable. Not overly memorable but nice.

Came into this expecting nothing. Never heard of Suba, don’t listen to electronica much if at all. I don’t speak Portuguese so I don’t understand a word off the album, but it is very much a nice easy listening album. I enjoy how much it flows from track to track: as a whole, very cohesive. Fav Track: Antropofagos 3/5

Pretty chill, but not very remarkable to me. I did enjoy it while working because it's not so distracting (because I can't understand the words!).

Para saber

I liked this one for the most part. Had an interesting vibe that was also very relaxing. Good music to chill out to or have on as background music.

Great production, mixing and it flow, but the lack of actual songwriting makes it hard to really get into. I respect the blend of 90s electronic music with the Brazilian sounds.

I do imagine this is exactly what Sao Paulo feels like. LOVE Pecados da Madrugada!

File under the shit they play at boutique hotel pool areas

3.3 - I like some of the rhythms ("Felicidade") and sonic elements ("Na Neblina"). But taken all together, it's too lounge-y for my taste.

1999 - Electronic music, Downtempo, Music of Latin America, Latin music, Acid jazz

Bueño

Not bad at all, quite relaxing and nice to find an artist I'd never heard of.

chill beats with lady Portuguese vocals

Early few songs gave me some Portishead vibes. Album seemed to drag on a bit too long, but had some good songs I should come to. 7/10

Interesting vibes

Suba and São Paulo Confessions were new to me. The album felt like it was somewhere in the middle of electronic, ambient, and club music. "Antropófagos" and "Segredo" were my favorite tracks, and "Pecados da Madrugada" had some interesting sounds. Some of the tracks had some odd sounds in repetition that kept me from enjoying the tracks completely. "A Noite Sem Fim" was my least favorite, which is a surprise because I usually like longer tracks on an album more. The track had too many sour electronic sounds. For my first listen this album feels like 3 stars, but I would be interested in hearing more from the band.

Música electrónica con pop brasileño. Escuchable, aunque un poco monotemático. Voz sensual en ocasiones. Calificación intermedia.

Rating: 5/10 Bests songs:

this was interesting. no idea what genre, but hints at electronica and bossa nova. its a unique listen with equal amounts of infectious grooves but with ear piercing effects

Fairly energetic, in terms of movement rather than tempo, yet it's still background music for me.

If a speakeasy could be shoehorned into a Manhattan business tower elevator, this could be the soundtrack.

Mm okay

Another I had just half listened to so will give a rating based on little thought.

In general, I'm a fan of the Brazilian-inflected Acid Jazz bands of the 90s. I wouldn't make any of them Desert Island Discs but they're good to cook to and safe for when you're having people over. I don't know why this LP would get selected over the many others. I like the opener and Felicidade, but some of the others drag a bit.

This was a nice find. I don't usually like acid jazz, but this has some nice downtempo beats with a laid back Brazilian samba vibe and also a bit of experimental electronic so it was a nice change from the usual insipid and pretentious lounge music that’s so prevalent out there. I listed to it twice, once with headphones while spinning and also at my desk while working and I can say that it sounds a lot better with headphones on.

interesting listen but just okay for me

So - first listen I abandoned - almost 80% of the way and it did not engage me one bit - and was going to leave it there BUT then I decided to give it one more go to listen to while running and there it shone. This album wasn’t written to be listened idly in the background - it needs some form of physicality and that’s how I could appreciate it - the early 90s trip hop bossa nova rhythms and occasional dub is not necessarily my cup of tea but it won me over eventually.

This was fine, but too cool gen xer for me I think

Beautiful voice good lounge music

I'm not quite sure how to approach this album. It's good but I feel like I'm lacking knowledge of this kind of Brazilian electro bossa nova style, especially when it's come via the Balkans.

A really groovy album!

Has some moments that drone on a little too much but overall a cool record. Will definitely be in my rotation for “music to listen to when reading,” which I think is worth something.

Half latin jazz, half mediocre electronica. Best track: Antropofagos

Wasn't expecting to like this but was pleasantly surprised.

interesting latin proto-acid jazz. lots of skippable songs here but there's some interesting ideas.

This whole album is nice for city driving. Definitely captures that vibe well. Vocals are very hypnotic and sensual as well. I was gonna give it a 4 but it fell off a little for me, 3.5 down to 3.

Weeeeeeird

Is this what Lo-Fi is? Ideal for listening whilst working. Innoffensive (unless the translated lyrics are troublesome) and chilled but not particularly memorable. My ignorance stops me from identifying what makes this album stand out from a million similar.

6/10. Might be worth a 7. Liked about every other song, but several annoyed me a bit

This album gave me some mixed feelings because I dislike most of the electronic music that I listened to in this list of 1001 albums, but this one has some very good songs. Since I speak Portuguese, I'm biased, however, I'll ignore this bias and make this electronic album the first 3 stars electronic album on my list. As a side note, it's very nice to discover new things, this project is really awesome.

Some interesting Latin jazz. Some of it hits better than others, but it’s pretty cool for driving around town.

Nao esperava ouvir musica brasileira aqui mas mandaram bem!

Some really interesting ideas, but too long.

Jaunty

Reichlich eintönig und repetitiv. Auf die Dauer schwer auszuhalten.

At first I thought people were just hating on non-anglo music again, but this is just trope-y electronic music trying to emulate Brazilian music. Pretty mid and background-y, 2*

I like samba. This was nothing special.

It's never really bad, but it really drones on, sticking with the same patterns for far too long, especially when there's nothing particularly groovy about them that makes you want to stay in that groove, and there's no tension coming from moving out of the groove temporarily to give you the relief of going back into the comfortable groove. It feels almost like the work of a DJ who's trying to figure something out and lets the track play while he's trying to think of something but never ends up doing it.

I'm not sure I listened to this. If I did, it made less than zero impression

Nice album, interesting, trip hoppy record with latin influences, bit eerie

It was ok as background music for a while.

Wow. Shitty 90’s techno (it’s really more trip hop-ish, but I like trip hop and I didn’t like this, so fuck you, its techno), culture vulturing and an album that came out days before the artist died. Robert Dimery’s three favorite genres combined into one! This sucked.

pretentious wine bar music

Kind of weird background music, which i usually like - not really the case here. Has some interesting parts but is mostly just whatever 5/10

Mediocre background music to a wine bar. Feels very much like it's only in here to make up numbers and bolster the ranks with just about anything. It's got moments of light in the malaise, but they're too far and few between to really count as anything noteworthy. Didn't totally hate it, however it's honestly nothing to write home about. Eh.

This felt all over the place. Likes: Tantos Desejos; Segredo

Only enjoyed the non edm parts

Ok, would prob enjoy if I heard more Spanish music to see what they were doing with it

First Listen; 2.5; If I need some sort of unobtrusive background music, this would be a go-to. But in that same vein, there's not really anything in here that stuck with me after listening to it. It's all pleasant enough, but hard to find anything all that interesting. Seems like there is an effort to do something artistic with instruments and sounds that aren't used much (or at all). For example, A Noite Sem Fim has some weird squishy/crunchy synth thing, but it just sounds corny and takes you out of whatever vibe this is establishing. Favorite Track: Tanto Desejos

I have never heard of Suba, but glancing at the track titles I am happy because I have work I need to do today and this shouldn't distract me too much since I don't expect to understand any of the lyrics. Reading the Wikipedia page, this guy's story is tragic. This album was fine until the third track ("Na Neblina"), which sounded like an alarm was going off in the background for most of it. This sounds like something I might hear at the Big Ears Festival. I liked some of it but some of it annoyed me. I did not need to hear it before I die.

This album is probably meaningful to someone out there, but from where I’m standing it feels like the kind of thing you would hear at a swanky Mexican restaurant…

Duller than my 10 year old kitchen knife.

It’s good. I enjoyed it. But I got nothing from it that a 1001 album should give me.

another weird album, wouldn't listen to it again though

I dunno, something about this mix of samples and beats and melodies, it falls flat for me. Rather than emanate excitement or style, it feels cold and distant and pretty repetitive. I didn't really care for it.

This came and went without causing much of a stir. There were a few cool polyrhythmic things going on here, but it was produced and arranged with such a muzaky sheen that they failed to thrill.

Started well. Got weird. Not for me.

Just a few days after São Paulo Confessions was released in November 1999, a massive fire broke out at Suba's recording studio. In a heroic effort, he rushed into the burning building to save his newly recorded masters—specifically the upcoming album for artist Bebel Gilberto. Tragically, Suba died of smoke inhalation during the fire, making São Paulo Confessions his final work. Sadly, that's more interesting than the album.

Bland, boring, dull, inoffensive? Take your pick.

Quite weird in places, this album is not for me.

This kind of dance music isn’t for me but a few tracks had some interesting melodies.

Experimrntal, meh. 3/10

i think i would have loved this if i was on molly

Interesting ambient-electronic-samba-esque record. No real eyecatching song, but interesting. A bit too rhythmic for me.

2/5 Favorite Song: Abraco

I found this really boring. 2 star as I could imagine it being cool in a Brazilian beach bar. Otherwise dull.

Background cafe music. Meh

Latin American with a twist, some intriguing bits but, for me, not intriguing enough. Its ok, but not for me. 2

Interesting and annoying in equal measures

This album is nothing groundbreaking, but it’s genuinely good music. While listening I felt relaxed and transported — like I was dropped into the middle of a Brazilian TV series or a late-night drama set in São Paulo. It has that smooth, atmospheric blend of electronic, bossa nova, and trip-hop influences with soft vocals and warm production. The grooves are nice and the overall mood is chill, slightly melancholic, and cinematic. It paints a very specific picture of city life, longing, and Brazilian nightlife without ever trying too hard. It’s not an album that will blow your mind or change your life, but it’s pleasant, well-made, and has a strong sense of place. Perfect for background listening or when you want something laid-back with a bit of Brazilian flavor. Solid work, even if it doesn’t leave a massive impression.

Trop perché c'est non

Electronica practitioners have never met a sound loop they didn't love to the point of endlessly repeating it until became absolutely mind numbing. Repetition fatigue set in very quickly on this album.

It's fun. Helping me get my school work done.

Nothing overly interesting about this, very boring at points. I actually struggled to get through this, just really started to drag on at points. I usually like an ambient sounding album, but this didn't do it for me. Fav Track: Felicidade

An interesting change from the recent albums and in terms of background-music quite o.k.

Fine, quite samey after the first few tracks and I've no idea under what circumstance I would think to put this back on and listen to start to finish.

I definitely have learned that I do like Latin / Caribbean / South American music with this project. This one was good, but did not stand out amongst the others. Definitely background music for a dark bar scene. 2.5

Pretty chill album but not much to keep me coming back 5/10 5/10 Favourite: Tantos desejos (So Many Desires) Least Favourite: Um dia comum (em SP) (A Normal Day in São Paulo)

It's not bad... but I also remember absolutely nothing from it after an hour.

I confess. I listened to all of this. God, help me.

Beats were fine, vocals were not.

A combo of samba and electronic that I thought was pleasant up to the point I paused the album to do something else and found myself feeling such relief that this music was no longer playing. Almost dropped to 1 star, but at least it didn't give me a headache.

wine bar music

boring, completely inoffensive, but mind numbingly boring.

I confess. Did not enjoy.

Jazz tinged,somewhat electronic beats

Yea no bad for non English album. A real vibe

I don’t like to be judged by music and this felt way too judgy.

I certainly won’t be rushing back to listen to this album but if a track or two popped up on my playlist I’m sure I could identify the producer of the tracks but almost certainly not the titles! I suppose I feel a little more cultured after listening to the album though. Fave song- Felicidade or Segredo (the only two songs I looked for the title and played again) Least fave- Voca Gosta I thought it was going to be a long listen after this second track but luckily the album picked up after this track. Not quite middle of the road so 4/10

Sorry, not for me. Only listened to 3 songs. Again, this blend of genres are a miss for me.

Not for me but not horrible either

After the first few tracks I had hopes of liking this more. But it kinda just kept going on and on after that. I felt like I was stuck in a Serbian Samba Starbucks, and this was the music on repeat.

I guess some chill beats to have on in the background. 🤷‍♂️

Overall pretty meh IMO, but did enjoy Samba do Gringo Paulista. 2.5/5

Pleasant but does not seem in the running for the best of its genre to make it to the 1001 list.

Meh. Just too jazzy to hold my attention but I didn’t dislike it. I did learn that there’s a SUBA nonprofit in this guys name- in Brazil.

I haven’t reached this level of chillness but had a nice shower

I was bored honestly

This collection was new to me! While not a go-to, it’s pleasant for a dinner party and easy listening to enjoy a moment that needs background soothing.

Fine just not for me

Latina vibe

I liked most of the songs on this album. There were a few clunkers that brought my score down.

Oof. Started out ok but then when it turned into minimalist bossa nova trance I could hardly stand it

Boring noise.

Len Houmous hired Suba to play throughout his 16th honeymoon. Following the couple everywhere, this was Suba’s take on what happened. 2.2 6/12 Felicidade

background noise

ohh das tönt mega spannend! ich chegg schochli d atmosphäre, woner het welle mitem album kreiere aaaabeeeeeeeer ich merk scho bim 4. song, wies halt eifach chli hindergrundmusig für mich wird hahaha hmmm samba do gringo paulisto isch chli wack chegg glaub scho de reiz aber nei danke isch lieb WISO TÖNTS WIE LINKIN PARK HAHAHAH AND I'M ABOUT TO BREAK uiuiuiuiuiuiuiii glaub das wird es 2. gsehn scho, dass er au spannendi sache gmacht het aber schlussendlich hani eifach sehr wenig zuegang dezue gfunde.

5/10. Fav Track - Segredo Fun electronic beats at best, elevator music at worst.

samplers paradise Nice tunes but not much else to it

Interesting atmospheric take, but honestly bored me. It bored me but it also made me a little anxious.

Alright, this going nowhere.

I may not have been in the right mood for this. Started okay, but didn't hold my interest.

I was expecting some samba, Brazilian vibes looking at the name of the album. I was only half disappointed, as what I got instead was some lo-fi acid jazz electronica with added samba drumming on some tracks. While the tracks washed over me nicely, none were particularly memorable and felt more like background music that was attempting to hypnotise me. Then, out of nowhere, someone is speaking Balkan to me? While very well produced, I won’t say that this is my favourite album of all time. 3.5/10

Sonically very high quality mixing a Spanish sound with electric elements, but not for me

Perfectly pleasant background music in that Cafe Del Mar vibe. Best albums ever? Nah, but it's alright.

Not really my thing

Jännä. En ihan tiiä mitä tää teki täällä. Ei nyt paskakaan mutta ei auennut mulle. Vähän pikakelaten kuuntelin

Pleasant, unremarkable. Music for a Montreal hotel restroom.

Very strange brazilian electronica with a slight industrial feel. After a while it felt like background noise.

#855. I have to confess that this did absolutely nothing for me. 2/5: meh

This was very much not for me. Trying to hard to be cool.

música de fondo ok pero sin más

Not ambient enough to really play in the background and not getting distracted every 20 seconds. The remainder is Latin style music, of which I am really not a fan of. 2/5

I realize it's more than a little silly to listen to a downtempo/lo-fi album and take issue with the fact that "not a lot happened." Albums like these aren't meant to have 100% of your attention, and for that I'm willing to grant it some leniency. All the same, though, I can't lie: I **do** wish more had happened. After all, the Brazilian influences on here **do** interest me. But on the whole, I'm just not very big on its whole "dark 'Blade Runner' soundscape" thing. Fittingly, I also had trouble staying awake when I finally watched 'Blade Runner'.

It was kinda fun, but not really my thing.

Not a fan.

A fusion of two genres that I enjoy and it still fell quite flat for me. Some neat grooves but it hasn’t aged well.

Can't say that this one particulatly grabbed me, it seemed perfectly good in terms of the writing and the ideas, but the mixing it where I think it really falls flat. Which is actually quite a shame because I think there was a lot of potential here, some moments did genuinely seem really fun, but the album as a whole experience I think it just too inconsistent.

Menos confessions y mais trabaillar

Don't know anything about them and decided to not look at the wikipedia before listening. Here we go. Kind of a modern-ish take on tropicalia I guess. The electronica influence sands off the more interesting edges of '60s tropicalia though. Would work as aural wallpaper for a dinner party with your parents. I didn't bother finishing it. Eventually looked at wikipedia. When one of the more notable things in the wiki article is "...included in the book 1001..." it tells me it's most likely not essential listening.

A little too abstract for me personally

I like the vibe, but with all electronica a full album becomes background noise for me.

Elite foyer music. Perfect for people that need to concentrate on something else.

Struggled to get through it to be honest, found I was never really in the mood for this 'background music' that I feel i've heard a million times when shopping in those hippie shops for mood rings. Some really fun grooves and awesome beats, but just not my jam sadly.

this album might be good background music for dinner parties where there are too many guests to be able to talk properly and/or noisy kitchen … it’s not completely unlistenable with a few chill tracks but it has some real crap in there too.

Brazilian electronic beats. I guess. Too long for what it was.

All of these electroacoustic latin jazz albums are starting to wear on me. Not a sentence I ever expected to write. At least I'm expanding my horizons of musical knowledge.

With how few “International” albums are on this list, I really wanted to like this one but it really didn’t work for me. Uneven and repetitive.

2/3. Very cool, trancey noise music, Definitely not something I’d listen to everyday (and even less likely while I’m sober), but there were some tracks that I quite enjoyed and overall, it was the kind of music taste expanding album that I enjoy from this list.

It was nice, but got monotonous after a while

was ok, upbeat vibes. not something i'd seek out

Started cool but got kind of boring in waiting roomish after a while.

Artiste inconnu. =>2/5

It’s got that mega processed 90s fusion flavour. Like a Locos Taco or something

Funky and all. But all the 6 minute repeating rythm section makes me long for prog.

I struggled a bit with this one. Initially it was interesting but found it a drag.

I'd probably appreciate this more if I wasn't feeling ill

Curioso

Very long, and gets very boring near the end,

Different

#186/1001. When the album started I thought this would be a refreshing change to all the rock music canon this list is made of. Instead we got an album full of washed out Brazilian sounds and westernified latin rhythms. Someone went to Ibiza, soent their time hanging out at the hotel pool and bar instead of clubbing and grabbed a best of Cafe del Mar compilation at the airport, fell in love with the opening track. Wtf is this book's focus? Brazil is a fucking musical wikipedia, and an album like this gets picked up?

This didn't do anything for me

Lift music for lifts

This was so boring to me, but there were some decent parts in the second half

Not for me - didn’t really enjoy the music and I’m really lyric driven so definitely not my kind of thing

There were some interesting ideas but most of them were underdevelopped and weren't really going anywhere. This was just some downtempo with a brazilian twist

Meh. An hour of this felt like a whole day.

Soooo much of the same thing. And the thing isn't that great.

I confess, it's not good.

Halfway through Vocé Gusta I wondered when this album was released. I guess mid-90s and I was pleased to find I was dead on: 1995. The naff, plasticky effects laid over this, like a teenager who has just got access to a cheap digital DJ app, really date it and make it much, much worse, and it wasn't really any good to begin with. I guess it's contemporary samba / electronica, but I don't like that at the best of times. There are a couple of interesting tracks, but overall this is another baffling inclusion on the list. Why did I have to hear this before I die? I don't think it's especially good, and it's not opened my eyes (or ears) to new vistas and genres I would not otherwise have encountered. Thumbs down.

Not for me… A little bit too 1990s dinner party for my liking.

There was a period I listened to quite a bit of the cafe del mar, after club morning sunrise type albums and this never came up so it’s a somewhat surprising inclusion. Although it isn’t particularly bad, it’s just a bit bland and sits much more in the background than anything worth actively listening to.

The first song sound like bjork and stereolab

Background music for a cozy bar for obviously pretentious but still cool people. Nothing special and unremarkable but inoffensive and ambient with some weird electronic moments at times

It was fine background music I guess.

Genuinely video game ost music

this sounds like the soundtrack for a mid-90s psychological thriller that takes itself way too seriously and has a 40% on rotten tomatoes. favorites: voce gosta, felicidade

Mid '90s wine bar music. The Brazilian aspect makes it both a little more interesting AND even more clichéd, somehow.

Pointless

The longer I listen, the more I hate. 2/5

Yeah sure
