Reviews (page 6 of 7)
Kind of interesting, but some tracks overstay their welcome and a couple hours later I'm already forgetting it.
Different to what I’d usually listen to. Odd instrumentals. Vocals are repetitive and equally as weird. Looong songs.
Not for me
Helt chill men inte så memorable, bra bakgrunds musik.
I confess. 2 stars.
🤷🏻♂️
Oli erikoista ä. Kivoja rytmejä mut no
Ei oikein lähde. Välillä ihan kivaa biittiä.
Ihan jees taustamusiikkia mutta 6min vieterisambat meni vähä yli.
Didn't start bad, but drifted into annoying territory by the end. I ended up not finishing this it got on my nerves that much. Not a fan and will happily never listen to this again. 2/5
Not usually into this type of music, but was great in the background while I got housework done.
This is the epitome of background music. While I appreciate that the melding of Brazilian sounds with electronic beats into a downtempo world beat stew might have sounded fresh in 1999, it’s stale now. I liked the couple of times the rhythm switched up and foregrounded drums or guitar. Otherwise, it just didn’t capture me.
1.5/5
Call waiting music
I’m guessing that the reason that this is on the list is because it’s Serbian, and from a time of major conflict in the region. However, it’s still a bit shit and nondescript, and for sure doesn’t need to run over an hour.
The opener was fantastic, it perfectly guided you into the universe of the album. This album unfortunately wasn't exciting to me.
Eternal Whispering Winds, Rough Discordant Seas 1001 Albums Generator 6 (04/10/2025) São Paulo Confessions is the fourth studio album by Serbian electronic musician Mitar Subotic, released under the stage name Suba. Tragically, Subotic died during the promotional cycle for this album as he was rushing into his burning studio to save the recordings. He was only 38 years old, and he has since been honored in both his birth country, Serbia, as well as the country he moved to and produced this album in, Brazil. This is an album and artist that I had never heard of, but the genres excited me. Acid Jazz is a genre I am unfamiliar with outside of Jamiroquai's incredible Virtual Insanity, which I love, and the bits of Bossa Nova and Samba I have heard are great. The album cover is striking and really feels like a candid view of the streets of Sao Paulo. I have never been, but I can say it reminds me of (and makes me nostalgic for) some streets I saw in southern Spain when I was there. This is a slow burn of an album, but there are moments where this slowness works to its advantage. The vocal tracks, especially those featuring Cibelle's sultry vox (Tantos Desejos, Felicidade, and Sereia) all stand out, and the chill production melds well with her voice. The opener particularly rocks, and had me very excited for this album. The live-sounding drums, jazz-y piano riffs, and bassline that reminds me of A Love Supreme at points, along with her voice, transport me to the streets of some big city in the wee hours of the morning (maybe Sao Paulo, but I wouldn't know). Antropofagos is potentially the most upbeat song and has the strongest groove on the album, although it does overstay its welcome just a bit, which is a theme for this project. The consistent pace of the album, as well as its length, cause the whole thing to wash over me. The songs, even the ones I enjoyed, never really build anywhere and the lack of real dynamic change throughout makes the album a bit of a slog to get through. It's hard for me to even point out specific songs I disliked, since so many of them blend together. Upon a second listen, I particularly noted the last four songs as being unremarkable to me, but maybe I was just starting to get a little tired of the album by this point. I will admit this issue may be partly due to my musical bias, as electronic music in general is not something that I have a lot of experience with, but reading other reviews, it seems I am not alone in my feelings here. Suba was undeniably a talent taken far too soon. While this is not an album I see myself coming back to as a whole, the creativity shown here feel more like an artist rising towards their peak than one that has said all that they need to say. Unfortunately, as a piece of music, this sits somewhere around a high 1.5/5, rounded up to a 2/5. Favs: Tantos Desejos Voce Gosta Sereia Least Fav: Pecados Da Madrugada
So this is some sort of electronic jazz or samba? Takes a genre I don't really love (electronica) and combines it with one I don't really understand (jazz). Doomed from the start. The electronica was annoying AF.
Verry usual electronic Bar - Lounge Music. Not exciting, not outstanding. **
Wow, what a tragic story - Suba died a few days after this album was released because his studio caught fire and he was trying to save the material he'd been producing with another Brazilian artist. (He was born in Serbia but was finding much success in Brazil.) I like some electronic music, but 1 hour of this was too much, and songs like Um Dia Comum (Em SP) with that repeating "wah" sound make me want to pull my hair out. Still, I respect anyone experimenting with blending different sounds and genres to make something unique, and sometimes it just hits. Samba Do Gringo Paulista is my playlist pick. The drums are so cool on that track. And the transition into Abraco is really nice - actually the whole run of the last 4 tracks is nice. I just really couldn't vibe with most of the rest of it as consistently.
custom_rating:5
A mix of uninteresting and not good electronic music.
If Trent Reznor was hired for production duties on a Stereolab album, it would be something like this, but that would be significantly more interesting than this is.
This style is not for me. Low-key ambient, electronic, meandering. Some cool rhythms on a few songs. Not really sure why this is a top 1,000 album I need to listen to - but OK.
Like listening to hold music or waiting room music. Complicated, lots of repeating and chill vibe but nothing to grab me to make me want to listen again.
To me it just felt like a compilation of noises 2/5
I guess?
As background music I guess it would be OK but it just doesn't do much for me. The only standouts for me were "Samba Do Gringo Paulista" and "Abraço" but not enough to give it any higher than a 2.
Chill brazillian inflected electronic beats - some good grooves but also some clunkers that distracted from the mood of the overall album flow for me.
Just kind of exists without eliciting much emotional response. It doesn’t really call on me to listen closely, nor does it speak to my subconscious.
“D’ya like jazz? 👈😎👈” Weird listen! The production was frozen in time, in all its 1999 glory - not really my thing but I can respect it. Back half is far more acid jazz and intriguing than the front.
Vinbar stemning, hyggeligt sin baggrund, men skrald som album.
Det er ikke sådan her elektronisk musik gøres interessant for mig
RIP to this guy, who died in São Paulo the same year this came out
2.5 - like every electrónica album the songs loop for way too long. The added Latin flair did make these a little more interesting than your average electronic songs
Not terrible but not good either.
++: Samba Do Gringo Paulista, Abraço, A Noite Sem Fim +: Felicidade, Um Dia Comum (Em SP), Sereia +-: Tantos Desejos, Você Gosta, Na Neblina, Segredo, Pecados da Madrugada -: Antropófagos 5,0/10
Very vibey but not my fave
At turns pleasant and unpleasant, getting more unlikable as it wears on. I wanted to like it because it combines two things I usually do like, but by the end I was entirely over it. I suppose an argument could be made that it is interesting enough to be on this list.
Somewhere between pop jazz and electronica lie whatever this is... I have no use for it (4.2) ★★
This is one of those albums that's tough for me to rate, because I don't think it's bad, but it's also not something I would ever voluntarily listen to. Like if this was playing at a trendy Brazilian steakhouse or used in a commercial for a luxurious day spa, I wouldn't think twice about it. It's totally fine. But, it's also pretty boring. No one except for Robert Dimery is going, "Hey, you gotta check out this Suba album!" It's the definition of inessential music that somehow made into a book about the most essential music ever made. 2.5 stars.
Not sure why this is on the list.
It felt a bit generic beric despite its brazilian roots.
This sounds like every song from a turn-of-the-millennium movie scene in a European nightclub. It's okay, but I don't really feel like the work wants me to listen too closely.
4 electronic albums in a row. I’m on a roll. And I don’t like it.
Not wholly unpleasant but also not particularly inspiring and got annoying after awhile.
not my cup of tea - chilled out samba rhythms etc
Interesting but not for me
It was okay, but not really my jam.
mid
There is a yeah yeah yeah’s album that belongs on this list, but it’s Fever to Tell.
A few songs were interesting but overall was a bit slow. Probably lost something on me due to lyrics in Portugese.
First listen. Ok.
Really not my thing. Another album I really struggled to get all the way through, found the songs way too long and way too dull.
Combination of samba and house music. Could have been good, but it's boring. Somehow it didn't feel as long as it is. Alright for background music.
Mildly entertaining mix of Brazilian and Electronic music. Interesting combo…..background music, at best.
Tedious.
Background music; interesting enough, but no really distinct song. A big 2.
Não, obrigado
Just boring generic background electronic music. And too damn long.
I plan on re listening. Very cool stuff but i didn't give it the Attention it deserved
This album seems to have really influenced someone at Sony because I kept hearing the PS2 start up noise. Unfortunately that’s the only interesting thing about this album
That was a slog tbf. But at least melodic. Not sure any band can have a must listen album if they only get 6k monthly listeners on Spotify. Me and Dan got more views during our brief Vine careers. Simpsons: No
Relaxing breakbeat music. Loved the two samba tracks. C
Jazz electronica bossanova? Not quite my cup of tea, but I don’t hate it. Okay background music. It’s quite long, though, so by the time track 9 has started, I’ve had my fill
Dull, repetitive, inoffensive background music. That's unfortunately all I have to say about it. 2 stars
Relaxing background music. Like if my dentist gave my a glass of white with my cleaning. Which would taste bad.
There's some fun ideas of songs here but it gets kind of repetitive.
meh
Was hoping the Brazilian theme gets explored abit more. But didn’t feel a strong presence other than the first few tracks.
This genre is not my favourite, but it was OK.
I really like listening to music in other languages, but not so much this time. It's definitely nice for a chill evening, but not in any other context. It wasn't one of the worst I've heard though. The traditional instruments mixed in are quite nice.
Hello ChatGPT, please generate a 90s electronic album with female vocals, thank you. Best song was the final one, because it sounded fucky.
Достаточно аутентично, но недостаточно захватывающе. Лучшая песня - Felicidade.
Too ambient and aimless to really be noteworthy. It isn't bad, but for an album released just 25 years ago, only the most influential/important music should genuinely qualify for "1001 albums you must hear before you die", and I don't see anything particularly influential here. Clearly (judging by number of listens), Spotify listeners don't either. In fact, São Paulo Confessions feels mostly like a vague and uninspired continuation of Latin American music from decades prior (with a little electronic sound sprinkled in to remind you that this ain't no 60s throwaway – it's a 90s throwaway). Props to Suba, I guess, for capturing this sound accurately. Felicidade is probably the track that intrigued me the most and had the more enjoyable electronic contributions. Those quiet pulsing synths are fun, and the singing is solid. The opening track, Tantos Desejos, is good for similar reasons. Most of the remainder of the album blended together for me. 2/5 Key tracks: Tantos Desejos, Felicidade
Sau paulo... maaninen kaupunki... conseptual.. paskinta paskaa.......
22/09/24 Not my cup of tea.
👎
A first I thought this was a pretty cool vibe and the kind of thing I could enjoy. Trip hop beats, jazzy bass etc. It got boring quickly though - I lost Wi-Fi at one point and I’ve no idea how long it had stopped playing for before I noticed. The rapping could have saved it and kept things interesting but too little too late.
Very much a product of its time and didn’t have enough interest within the songs to hold my attention.
Coffee table music for dinner parties in the mid-nineties. There's thousands of albums that sound similar to this one - and they're all bland background music. Wallpaper for your ears. I have no idea why I had to hear this album. Best Tracks: Tantos Desejos; Felicidade; Um Dia Comum (Em Sp)
Väldigt weird, vad är det ens.
The music wasn't awful, but I was not a fan of the Spanish lyrics. Would not seek out again.
I have no interest in this at all. It's not horrible, it just means nothing to me.
Alternates between exciting Latin-infused electronica and elevator music. Samba Do Gringo Paulista and Abraco were the best songs. Good late night driving music, but thats about it.
Okay, this is a bit mid - it's great for having it in the background or playing it in a street art gallery that focuses on indie pieces of work, but if you really sit down and try to listen to only this, you might go crazy from the repetitiveness and eeriness sometimes. Art gallery background - 5 stars; actually listening to it properly - 2 stars.
two of the cardinal rules for a musical act: don’t be boring and don’t be redundant. this album violates both of these.
Dude put electronica music overtop of Brazilian pop. It's interesting, but still electronica. So the album suffered (like all in that genre it seems) of being too long, and boring Favourite songs: Antropofagos, Na Neblina Least favourite songs: Pecados Da Madrugada 2/5
I’m conflicted about this album. Honestly, I felt that it was ok to me but not amazing. However, if I’d heard this before Caetano Veloso or Os Mutantes, I’d probably have had a higher opinion as it would have opened my eyes to a genre I hadn’t come across before. The reality is that I’d often find myself zoning out and not paying much attention. I’ll admit that it took a few minutes after it finished before I realised that music was no longer playing.
Nice sound but a bit too repetitive for me
Sao Paulo Confessions by Suba is a captivating blend of electronic music and Brazilian rhythms, showcasing the late artist's depth and ambition. It features a unique fusion of genres that highlights Suba's innovative spirit and potential for greatness, tragically cut short by his untimely passing. The tracks are richly layered and offer a glimpse into Suba's creative mind, but the album as a whole feels a bit lengthy and heavy. Despite its flaws, it presents a distinctive soundscape that stands out in the electronic music genre. Suba's work on this album hints at a promising career that could have soared to great heights. The production quality is top-notch, and the cultural influences are seamlessly integrated. Sao Paulo Confessions is worth a listen for its artistic ambition, even if it doesn't invite multiple replays. It serves as a poignant reminder of what could have been for an artist on the cusp of a major breakthrough. NUMBER OF BANGERS - 0 STAND OUT TRACK - None

Heard this one before when I dropped into an Old Navy to get a couple pairs of their unbeatable relax fit denim shorts
Works well for background music but didnt really enjoy it more than that. Standout song: voce gosta
Dozed slightly on a plane while listening to this, so maybe this review isn't entirely fair; I found it to be pleasant but a little uninspiring.
liked this but don't know if I'd ever seek it out again 4/10
I rated this album lower because I am not a fan of the genre. As such, I lack the competency and the vocabulary to speak to its importance or greatness. The musicality is undeniable, but I struggled to maintain interest while listening. I also couldn't distinguish well between tracks. If this is your genre, I am confident you will enjoy it as it is pleasant enough, but I didn't get it. Perhaps I will revisit this album as I develop a greater ear for the electronic side of the musical house.
not really my thing
There's a good track on here. Can't remember which one - it wasn't that good! Mostly this is repetitive, monotonous and dull.
Feels like I’m sitting in a cafe waiting for my drink to arrive.
Weird fucking album. Seems like it was scores for a shitty scary movie. Not a fantastic listen while working and trying to focus. Last song is aggressive. 2 stars
Electronic bossa nova? Not quite as good as I hoped it would be. Alright background music but nothing you'd seek out to listen to.
This is hotel lobby music, why is this on the list?
I didn’t like the electronic aspect of this album.
It was alright but didn't excite.
Music to clean your house by.
Sadly, this got boring very quickly.
Not a big fan of electronica and this album didn’t connect with me. His work with Bebel Gilberto was more vibrant. 2/5
Nota: 3,5/10 02/06/2024
Eh..it was ok but nothing spectacular
🎧Interesting genre change up here: Latin, acid jazz, downtempo, electronic. Antropofagos is a cool song. All in all, this doesn’t feel like a record I’ll return to. Pleasant listen though.
chill, ethnically ambiguous lofi-esque vibes, well placed funky / upbeat intermissions, and a sprinkle of white noise. // study soundtrack vibes
I think this mostly stunk. Felt like someone was trying to hypnotize me with no chance of success. Not sure why this made the list.
I don't know. It didn't offend me. Did I need to listen to it? Maybe, time will tell? Maybe it changed my life and I don't know it yet. An album was made. Some Samba of the future... A look at the future... All the way to the year 2000.
Waaaaaay more boring than it needed to be
Didn't really do anything for me... absolutely fine background music though.
Some decent stuff but some annoying bollocks
It's OK. It's probably what I'd expect to hear in a swanky hip boutique. Like American Eagle or something. But I don't really know why it's listed here as the 1003 album that I need to listen to.
There's a bit of a cool vibe that starts this, but it all falls apart pretty quickly. The songs don't really go anywhere... they just get started and do the same thing pretty uninteresting thing for 5 minutes. There's a couple of songs that are a bit experimental and interesting, but it tends to not be in a good way. All seems pretty skippable.
Decent album, I like the sounds and textures, very cool rhythms. Woul dbe a three but the album is too long, should have been shortened by 15-20 minutes. You start out thinking this is a great, unique sound, but it gets very repetitive.
Better than expected after the first track... still not great though. 46/100
Not really
Meh album.
Baggrundsmusik i en forfærdelig bar
Godt arbejdsmusik, men overhovedet ikke essentielt
Overhovedet ikke min stil.. Men mystisk nok rimelig trance-agtigt når man hører hele pladen..
Electronic music with a good singer on top of it. Like the vibe, not the execution
Just not really my thing - every song got repetitive quite quickly and while it did mix things up a bit between tracks not a lot it really worked for me. Você Gosta was fantastic but otherwise I just got nothing out of this
I don't have time to spare to start giving a damn about this album.
Not my jam.
I wanted to like the salsa influence but I got bored.
A little too electronic at times for my taste. Otherwise, relatively enjoyable
Almost pleasant but nothing really stands out. Low 2.
Alright bud.
Ambient background cafe music. Kinda pointless.
Strictly background for me. Not terrible, just background.
I go to a festival called Love Supreme most years - jazz and soul, with a smattering of that patronising term 'world music'. This album is the sound of a sparsely attended mid afternoon DJ set in a tent you've stumbled into to get some respite from the sun. Or possibly the post-headliner DJ set where you're narcotised by pricey beer and fatigue. One of the friends I go with is earnest in his love of this stuff.
Interesting vibe, didn't hate it
not my favorite
I thought I was going to enjoy this more from the first track, which reminded me a bit of Laura Nyro and LaBelle. But that was as good as it got, the rest was all very forgettable.
4/10
This is a fun pace change. It's not really innovative but it doesn't fit in a genre either which I like. It's a little like a bar band with synth. But then the last three tracks are just crappy dub.
Album 267 of 1001 Suba - São Paulo Confessions Rating : 2 / 5 Doesn't really do much for me. It isn't the worst thing to listen to, but just doesn't make me want to hear more. The language barrier is part of it, I'm sure.
Sort of neat blend of latin and electronic styles, but not my thing. If it were, I'd probably be voting this way higher. If I could avoid voting at all, I would.
Not really into lofi chill and if I was this wouldn't be it.
There are various sounds and sometimes a pleasant sounding woman sings in a foreign language (I will guess Portuguese), sometimes in reverse. Also, a guy with a deep voice talks in one of the songs. I wish it would have ended a bit sooner.
Album #: 331 issued, (289 rated) first impressions: this might be funky fresh after listening through: this is like the portuguese version of that red snapper album; vaguely ominous/sexy/cool hold music. post-reading reviews/wiki: . I can't believe I gave that Red Snapper album a 4. I would be inclined to 3 this one bc at least there's some fun world-music influence on it, but i'd have to take away a star for the whistling and for being at least 10 minutes too long. recommended for: someone interested in getting zooted and pretending its the 90's
Not too much to say about this one. Certainly, it escaped the Gilberto style samba albums and brought some new atmospheric sound. It wasn't terribly exciting to me.
What would happen if you were to take samba and make it wobbly? This is what would happen. It isn't great, I'll be honest. There's a lot of production choices that I just don't get - like the overly repetitive beats and riffs. The sound seems compressed, with not all that much in the way of dynamic range and the preponderance of frequency around the 100hz mark makes this actually quite tiring. When the kick drums break out and bring you some low frequency to drag you away from the floor toms, it's a blessed relief. I'd have preferred some of the vocals to be more prominent, as the balance against that incessant 100hz muddy murk is just too damn low. I guess if this were produced better, had tighter focus on the distinct and stripped out a lot of the padding I'd like it a hell of a lot more.
It was fine. It's in a different langu5,it didn't really hold my attention
It's pleasant. Almost too pleasant, to the point where I don't really care about it. Not sure why this is on the list, since it so easily blends into the background.
c'était pas de la bossa nova .
this album felt too long. i've heard much worse before, for what it's worth. on the bright side, suba created electronic music that was pleasant and not grating to my ears, especially for someone who isn't the biggest fan of electronic music. the infusion of experimental, jazz, and ambient aspects kept suba's são paulo confessions interesting. then out of left field, suba throws a fiddle in for a folk-y feel. the fiddle was a choice, is what i'm saying. still, in the end, the album as a whole just seemed to never end.
Very chill, jazzy, electronic Latin-infused music here. I wanted to like it more, but I think maybe my appreciation for Latin sounds was overrun by my indifference on this style of jazz and electronic music. Either way, it was interesting, but I didn't really feel blown away by this.
Started ok, a bit much by the end
Meh.
somewhere in a midwestern coffee shop the baristas are begging to play their own music and the manager is saying “why make me vet your selections when we already have São Paulo Confessions on repeat all day?”
A few tracks you’ll bop along to in your living room, a few tracks you’ll wish would hurry up, not really best in class for chill out dance and its place on this unwarranted.
Not as good as Busta Rhymes though, is it?
Average.
Inoffensive but seriously bland
Sopi hyvin videopelin taustalle kevyellä tunnelmallaan. En ehkä muuten kuuntelis.
Nooh, tää oli taas tällanen perusihanokkuunneltavamuteimitäänsuositeltavaa
I wad hoping for a but more out of this one. I wanted some Spanish vocals to be more of thw focus. It's alright though. Repetitive but nit bad sonicly.i liked it and saved a song so there's that 2.5* if I could but I'll probably have to give it a 2* sadly
2.5 I’m not sure exactly what Suba is confessing to here, but it sounds to me like he’s admitting to being a pretty average electronic musician. That’s not to say I disliked this - in many ways it feels like the natural evolution of the mellow electronic sound that Air had started experimenting with a year prior on Moon Safari (another album I gave a mediocre score to), but here, it’s hit with a dose of Latin-fusion, courtesy of Suba’s recent immigration to Sāo Paulo. And I would argue that’s the album’s biggest strength - the mixing of genres makes this a unique listen and encapsulates a “late night in a South American metropolis” vibe so well, even as someone who has never been (the album cover does great job of that too). I also really enjoyed singer Cibelle’s voice and thought they were a pleasant addition to just about every track they were featured on. Yet, despite all of that, I wasn’t really hit with any kind of lasting impression. There’s nothing here that I think I would go out of my way to re-visit, and the only songs that stick out to me looking back now are the closing track A Noite Sem Fim, which I found kind of annoying, and Samba Do Gringo Paulista, which I feel would fit perfectly in the soundtrack of a racing game (I could see it in a modern Mario Kart). Not much else to say on individual songs, though there was one track in there I swear sounded like Cibelle was singing “my dick”. Maybe I could learn to appreciate this album if I ever get around to seeing São Paulo firsthand, but as is, I would say I found it okay. That being said, apparently Suba’s next release Tanto Tempo would go on to become the highest-selling Brazilian album outside of Brazil - an album that he apparently realized was that good because he literally died in an effort to save the recordings from a studio fire (a few days after this album released). So, I won’t write off Suba just yet - hell, maybe that album’s on this list.
A Serbian playing Brazilian music! Zzh zzh
Interesting to hear some experimental Brazilian music and there’s some decent beats on here but I didn’t really enjoy it all that much. Might be better as a sound track over the right scenes in a movie
I just did not connect with this at all. It feels like a cop-out but I really don’t have much to say. I guess I’m wondering who it influenced to deserve a spot on the list?
Nice and atmospheric, very backgroundy though
Another weird electronic album that does nothing for me. I enjoyed the tracks where there was a female vocalist but I thought the pure electronica was rubbish. Ok as background but wouldn't listen again. Highlights: Tantos Desejos Segredo Felicidade
Not my thing.
It’s sometimes pleasant!
A little repetitive
São Paulo Confessions shows that modern Brazilian music isn't necessarily better than all the other Brazilian music we had on here. It's different but no more interesting or able to connect with it.
This was better than I expected, but still not really to my taste. It's a lot more modern and electronic than most of the rest of the Brazilian music we've had. but still retains a bit of that repetitiveness (fine for dancing to, but not so good if you're just listening to it). Definitely outstays its welcome, although I think it improves towards the end - could do with a bit of pruning of the first half of the album. As it is, a strong 2.
Not something I'd normally listen to, but it was nice enough.
Inte särskilt roligt!
I have a confession to make... this was pretty shitty
Not a fan but I don't hate it
The vocals in the start are disgusting. 2
Not that it's terrible, I either wasn't in the mood for this, or, just didn't like it. 1.5
I've never heard of Suba before, and honestly, I'll probably never think of them again. This album was fine, and I thought the first thirty seconds or so of the first track showed some promise, but things didn't ever really take off for me. I didn't find this album bad, but there was nothing about it that stood out to me as an album of importance.
Latin acid jazz by a Serbian-born musician. Of course. I don't hate it, but I just wish that the album was as fascinating as Suba's story.
I tried. I really did. Weird Muzak garbage with a slightly Latin flavor? Not sure why this is on any list of “must listen to” besides for someone looking to play some atmosphere music at a mediocre brazilian steakhouse
Basically, upbeat Brazilian muzak. I want to say that I found this interesting, but truthfully, it was kind of boring. I'm glad I listened to it but I have no plans to listen to it again.
I hate electronic music and i’m so sick of it and everything it surrounds. I can see why some might like it because occasionally some of the songs were okay but it’s so ugh and boring. It was okay sometimes though so 🤷♀️🤷♀️🤷♀️
A very atmospheric album with jazzy beats. The tempo is mellow and kinda drones on.
Not great.
A blend of Samba and Electronic, New Wave, World Music - this album is a varied experience with a cacophony of unique rhythms and sounds. While there isn't anything too memorable or remarkable, this album and entry are fine if you are into this type of music.
Extremely laidback. Some pleasant Latin bits mixed in with the modern production, but quite muddy and messy electro-trance which becomes more and more aimless through the album. Not very good.
Meh
A lot of songs on this album give off the feeling like they're building up to an absolute breakdown that would be in place in the cutscene of a video game before a boss fight, but that "boss fight" music never comes. If not that than it's just basic bossa nova. None of it is bad, just elevator music with flare, and I generally like "elevator music". I also think it's funny many are saying it gets better as it goes but some of the later songs made me laugh out loud at how ridiculous they sound.
This album started off as s strong 3 for me but then quickly became redundant and a bit boring.
Ambient cocktail bar music.
This album was a bit of a letdown. I usually get excited whenever I see a samba album come across but the late 90s electronica infusion just doesn't cut it. Just doesn't stand the test of time like all electronic music of this era, IMHO. Would've been way better if they just stuck to the traditional samba sounds. 4/10.
Not as bad as I thought it would be, but still don’t see myself going back to it in the future
I got into the groove a few times.
Ikkje så glad i syrete 90-tallsmusikk
Subs, was it? I’m sorry, it’s not you. It’s me. I heard some of your beats, I listened to a groove or two, and I just know that I’m not the listener for you. You’ll find someone better, someone Serbian even, who can treat you right. I wish you well, but I’m moving on.
Just noise. Not interesting enough to listen to intently. Not relaxing enough to have on in the background. Maybe if you were on mind altering drugs it would be interesting. Was hoping for more of a chill bossa nova vibe, but nope.
I was with the album for the first couple of bops and then it turned into 40 minutes of looping elevator music.
Meh
nah
Latin-fusion, hypnotiserende, halv-mørkt
I did not enjoy this one. I could not relate to the music any more than I could to the Portuguese lyrics.
No. Nope. Not for me. I wish I understood the appeal of such music but I just don’t. Like steak and red wine, my palette has just never warmed to electronic music.
Not what I was expecting at all.. there were some good ideas, but it's really top repetitive
For me, it takes something special to get over the language barrier. This didn't clear the bar.
Aside from a couple of songs & that one samba, I didn't care for the album. Just not my thing.
Seems to be a common trend of combining stereotypical electronica with various music genres, and in this case we see bossa nova (with elements of funk and Latino in specific tracks). A lot of it is trash and it's too long, but the vocalists meet my expectations, and some of the songs work super well. There's also a bit of versatility while still maintaining coherency. That is, some tracks like the first two flow super well, and nothing is too out of place (maybe in mood, but even the techno "Samba do Gringo Paulistica" fits with the spirit of the genre). Favorites: Tantos Desejos, Segredo, Felicidade
Take a slow and rather uneventful/boring genre like Bossa Nova and then inexplicably combine it with shitty electronic music and out comes this
Not much to say here, except that it was nice. Might just be tired, but it was nothing too stand out for me. Favorite track was Abraco because of the vocals.
Uh... well, it's different. I'll give it that.
Not for me.
Sade was better cut more mainstream.
interesting Serbian and Brazilian, instrumentals were better, could be half as long, maybe less.
Meh
I'm not sure about this one... very easy to have on in the background. Maybe I'm uncultured but it's not really my jam.
Weird album, not bad background music though
Hm. Suba's death story is a sad one, but I can't say I enjoyed the album all that much. Not my genre anyways.
It's fine. Good for background music. Listened to it several times today and nothing stuck. 2/5.
I did not care for it.
Reading into the background of Suba they seemed to be quite influential in this very niche genre of 90s house/ jazz/ Brazilian samba music.....but despite initial intrigue I quickly got bored. Might be fun to listen to at a beach party in the background
I usually like Brazilian music but really struggled to connect with this for some reason. The beats got more interesting and inventive as the album went on, so it *just about* scrapes a second star.
I think this is an okay listen, but most of the tracks are just boring. Favorite tracks are Antropofagos and Ne Neblina.
Really long and weirdly experimental in a way that didn’t pan out super well in my opinion. Maybe another listen would help do it justice but I don’t wanna sit through this album again. 4/10
The album is lo-fi electronica mixed with Latin american beats. It would be good to have on in the background at a low-key dinner or a chill-sesh. Best: Abraço; Samba Do Gringo Paulista Worst: Antropófagos 2.5 Stars
40 seconds into the first song I know this experience is going to give me an aneurism
I'm not a big fan of bossanova or late-90s chillout music. The combination is lethal.
I'm very surprised this album is on this list. It just sounds like incidental music in a property renovation show. Not for me at all
More crappy Electronica - Now with Brazilian flavor.
I couldn’t wait for this to be over. Wrong day for me to have this shopping for clothes at structure album.
YES! Presumably more Samba music! YES! SCORE! Let me get my dancin' shoes!! Oh baby! We're shuffling good! Woohoo!! AND IT HAS A WASHED OUT GREYSCALE LATE 90's CLUB TWIST!?!?! Teehee WOOHOO!! YIPPEEE!! My propeller on my hat is spinning wildly. My cheeks have never been rosier as I firmly grasp my comically oversized lollipop and solemnly samba shuffle to this amazing (!!!) and not at all repetitive vocal scatting! Once the vocals leave, I'm sure glad that these basic melodies and rhythms repeat forever! I wouldn't want to forget a single one!! Man, this truly is a golden age for albums and thankfully I heard this one before I died thirteen seconds after the needle lifted. My heart simply exploded from the sheer excitement of hearing Brazilian uhh "Tribal Ambient" (don't yell at me, look at RYM). Apparently this guy is also just a Serbian dude who fetishized South American culture. Surely his early death has nothing to do with this album's inclusion! It's just another monolith of musical mastery!!! 0 HIGHLIGHTS: PortuJeez this album is super!
baffling album. a bit trip-hoppy but i did not appreciate this one at all.
SO bored of being bored by this list
Serbian artist? Ok now this is the closest I'll get to having some Romanian representation on this list. I'll take it honestly. If u ask me I'd say "1001 albums you should listen to before you die" shouldn't mean "1001 highest critically acclaimed albums for pretentious fucks". In my opinion this project should have explored the world's music. Like, maybe music from Latvia or Bahrain or Ghana is banging and I'll never have any idea. This is just a rant unrelated to today's album. Now, the actual album. In my country there's no such thing as a "wine bar", but based on how many people say this is wine bar music I don't have any desire to go to such a bar. This music is so inoffensive it's outright boring. I can't imagine a context outside of background music just so you fill the silence while studying or painting or something. Personally, I'm never gonna listen to this again, not for me at all. It has some groove here and there, but it's not captivating my attention at all. At least it's not a threat to my ears, so I'll give it that. Not as bad as other 1 stars I gave. Just boring. I can't sit through it all.
Latin elevator music
BORING.
Tråkigt och stundtals irriterande, till och med som bakgrundsmusik.
This must be all over, "Expensive Looking Hotel Lobby" playlists
Didn't enjoy this. Samba acid jazz downtempo electronica? Nah
Considering that astonishing amount of good music created and produced in Brazil it is incomprehensible that this makes the cut. While the album has some ok moments, I think that often combining general traditional brazilian music with electronic music is not a good combination. It takes away from the earthiness and groove of those musical styles while pushing it further into elevator music territory. If you want to listen to something from Brasil, listen to Novos Baianos, Jorge Ben or Martinho Da Vila
Gear: DCA ÆON 2 Noire Artwork: 🚘👤🌃 Production: 📈🐍😖 Music: ⁉️⛔🔇 Rating: ☕/5
Na ja
Clean, detached, kinda boring. 2 songs are sorta interesting but overall i’m not very impressed.
This felt never ending and I'm glad it's over, sorry!
2/3/26. Hmm... just thought this one was boring? It didn't seem like this album could decide what it wanted to be, which ended up as tame electronica with a little Brazilian influence. Swing and a miss for me; perhaps this review will age poorly.
Bloody hell two dull listens in a row. Too repetitive for me and quickly faded into background
Like avante garde Brazilian jazz. Very weird
Lo-fi jazzy electronica is definitely not my genre. While I didn’t hate this, it’s not something I’d ever choose to listen to. Also 100% makes me feel like I’m working in coffee shop filled with late 90s global village decor

Don't give up your day job.
Back to back horseshit early 2000’s electronica. Why is this on the list? I hate it.
Not my type of music.
Not great.
I'm positive this is competently produced and arranged, but for the most part, it's very much outside my wheelhouse and my patience quickly runs thin with it. Suba's story is quite tragic, though. 1.5/5
Headache music
Eh this isn’t for me. Sometimes it’s ignorable background music when I’m working and sometimes it’s distractingly not for me.
the tragic backstory is way more interesting and notable than the music itself, which unfortunately just mills around. too texturally ambitious to work as lounge music, sound design too muddy and sloppy to work as production porn, and structured too loosely to have memorable songs. deserves to be one of the 1001? i would easily swap this pick for a more interesting electronic album. hell, if you want something Brazilian for this niche, Amon Tobin is right there
Nope, can't do it. Too Jazzy
Too repetitive and ambient, not my taste
This BLOWS, I hate electronica
Not for me, sounded dull and repetitive!
I was waiting for this one to end, it’s instrumental which is fine but being an hour long with only attempts to make it exciting lead to a messy, banal and bland album.
Didn’t get interested in it
I can't do it ... We had such a good streak going!
Not for me
Not my thing
Not for me, kind of forgettable on first listen.
1/5 Suba lost me after track 2. Once again I'm reminded that music taste is subjective. It's boring music for people who don't care what they're listening to. The fact that it's very inoffensive as well is what offends me. Music should have grit, distinguishable style and sticking sound and lyrics. This album lacks all of that.
One of the albums ever. Too minimalistic for my taste, decent background noise for working. In my opinion this album does not deserve its place on the list, but I might be missing some backstory.
Too much noise. 1/5
bland, vapid and formulaic
Här och där finns små passager som väcker ett intresse. Men på det stora hela kunde det lika gärna ha varit bakgrundsmusik på något hippt spa eller nått surdegsbageri i ett genomgentrikerat område. Musik som varken gör till eller från.
I did not like this
Distressingly failing to be any of the attempted Genres (Electronic, Latin, Acid Jazz, Downtempo). Leaving me with dull being on hold in a contact line music.
Much of the Brazilian music this project has introduced me to has been really interesting and worth my while. This one was not that…. I kept thinking it would get interesting when a cool rhythm or vocal passage would start, but it just never did. Absolutely slog to get through.
I sometimes feel like I'm being a bit harsh with some of the scores I'm giving these albums. This is a bang average album at best. If there were only 1,001 albums in existence that might mean it gets three stars... but there are obviously a LOT more albums out there, and we are supposed to be looking at the most essential 1,001 of the millions out there. So, just one star. Sorry. Bang average just shouldn't be on this list in the first place, unless it is notable in some other way, which this really isn't.
Not my genre
Really boring. Does not belong on this list. Giving it my first one.
The background sound of all clothes shops in the 90s. Not a recommendation. If this unnerving nonsense was on whilst I was trying on a new pair of chinos I would leave immediately. Less salsa dip more sheep dip
Music for wine bars, totally inoffensive and dull 1*
Never heard of before, and very unlikely to revisit again in future. Just not my thing at all. Felt like elevator music with occasionally raised BPM
Had to speed listen, again. My Serbian is a little rusty.
Not for me
Damn this week has been bad. This album doesn’t make it better either, this was so shit. It’s just noise, it sounds awful and it sounds like when in the movies there’s like a stereotypical tribal ceremony that no one wants to point out is probably depicted in a racist way. Anyway this sucks.
eh
Repetitive and slightly annoying. Is it even meant for active listening? Don’t know the music tradition it is drawing from, so hard to appreciate.
Brazilian electronic music....what's not to love! Why are there so many Brazilian acts in this list? This sounds like someone put words to the opening notes of the Pee Wee's Playhouse theme song. Electronica is not a genre that I appreciate. The traditional Brazilian samba bits are the best part of the album...makes me envision Carnival. This cannot end soon enough. This is the music of a hipster churrascaria or a nightclub in a mixed income neighborhood or the soundtrack to a Brazilian neo-noir thriller. No one in Brazil could have been asking for this...to paraphrase Hank Hill, they aren't making electronica better, they're making samba worse. Abraco hits like a car alarm with some backwards singing interludes. It continues to get worse from beginning to end.
Just elevator music
Not for me
Blind album and artist. Nope.
Couldn’t do it
