Reviews (page 10 of 13)
At first, I was struck by how '80s this sounded. Really wasn't expecting that. Overall, this is OK. There were a few songs and moments that kind of swept me away, so that's cool. And maybe if I gave it more spins I'd be more into it. But at the same time, it all feels very safe and very much like other things I've heard before. So, right down the middle.
Heard this a few times...although each time I listen to it I don't remember the songs at all. It isn't bad and there some well known songs on the album. I think I just need more time. Most Notable Songs: Red Eyes, Under the Pressure, Burning, Eyes to the Wind, An Ocean in Between the Waves 3/5
There is so much good music in the world. And this is good. Really good. But not really special.
I've never heard of this band before and I'm pleasantly surprised by this album, little bit of Bob Dylan mixed with some Tom Petty overall very solid album.
2010's hipster indie rock, sounds like Dire Straits and Springsteen. It has the potential to grow on me Best Song(s): Suffering, Burning Listen Again: Yes
i'm torn on this album. on one hand, musically, lost in the dream is solid. they've got this dreamy ambient vibe that's a little spooky--perfect for october listening. in that regard, i can't say i'm surprised this album was written by the lead singer while he was in the throes of depression. but the thing is, i'm not sure i heard much new music on this album. "eyes to the wind" had bruce springsteen's sound, bob dylan's voice. "burning" was full springsteen. the title song was very dylan. "red eyes" sounded like "touch of grey" by the grateful dead. i could go on! but you get the point. mostly, i felt like the war on drugs brought nothing new to the table. i say mostly because their instrumental "the haunting idle" was unique and was creatively interesting. i'll give this a 3 and we'll call it even.
This was a good listen, but maybe underwhelming in terms of this project. This psychedelic, folky, Americana indie rock was really easy to listen to. A lot of indie music leans into folk sounds, but it's not everyday that you hear something in the indie space that does Americana and does it well. They're clearly heavily inspired by acts like Bob Dylan and Bruce Springsteen. I found this more pleasant than most Bob Dylan, so there's that, but still not sure on what makes it so special for this project. Liked it, didn't love it, found it interesting, but don't understand why it's on here. Just gonna even it out at a 3.
not my bag, man
Had never heard of them but liked it. However, none of the tracks really rose above solid.
This album is like a solid 3.5 for me, and I really enjoy the war on drugs. It just sounds way too same-y for a full through listen
Folky but also rock pop. Calm listen all the way through. Standout tracks: Burning
own
it's nice, not my style
Liked it, not loved. Just didn't really stick with me
Not really my thing, a little to 'indy'
Sounds a lot like Springstein. OK but not outstanding.
Very atmospheric, very Americana, kinda like revamped Springsteen to me. Not bad, would listen again in the right time and headspace.
Really enjoyed the first track but subsequent tracks weren’t as good. Overall 3*
inoffensive
Underwhelming: I felt this whole album was just a little mid. No songs I particularly enjoyed and neither many I absolutely hated, just meh. It was a very forgettable affair and just for that it may be on the lower end of ratings. I just felt it was on the end of high two to a low three, I'll round up but this was just a little unimaginative.
Very bland and one-dimensional. Not a bad record but not a memorable one. Don't really understand why its here, I can't figure out what new its bringing to the table, if any.
Rock indie
Quite nice
This was okay. Pretty cohesive as an album. Some of the songs went on for much longer than they needed to. The War on Drugs aren't always my favorite, but I liked this well enough.
Under the pressure was my introduction to The War on Drugs. Amazing album that I still constantly listen to.
3.5/5 enjoyed this one more than I thought I would
3/5 Best: Under the Pressure Worst: In Reverse
i think if i had listened to this album around the time it came out, i would have been into it. this was the kind of music i was into at the time, and i'm surprised i missed this one. where i stand now is i appreciate it, but it maybe did not hit as hard as it may have back then. i still enjoyed the sort of atmosphere-y approach to the heartland rock sound, but ultimately i found this album a little dull. there are some nice moments here, but you have to sit through a lot of the atmosphere to get there.
Sounds really good but its sounds develop too slowly for too long to be a complete album listen.
Overall pretty good. Some songs were unnecessarily long and a little too repetitive, but it's much better than some of the albums this website's given me.
Coole Sounds, aber insgesamt ein bisschen lahm
Synchronicity! I just added Under the Pressure to my playlist last month! Great song! The album as a whole is pretty 2010s alt-rock-y. I think I would've liked this a lot more if I'd heard it then, when that was 'the Sound'.
This is okay at first. It has this heavy, old school Americana feel to it that I can kind of get behind. But it never really goes anywhere. And by the back half of the album it's just fine in too long.
Pretty good throughout, a bit too slow for me for an entire album and some of these songs lose a bit of Steam after a bit, otherwise not bad at all.
"Mom can I have Bruce Springsteen?" "We have Bruce Springsteen at home"
This album is already in my regular rotation only because it’s a recent album I like, it’s good and I agree it should be on the list, but of albums Iv enjoyed in the last few years it’s just a bit samey for it to be more than a 3 star album. It’s not one I openly recommend to people.
Had never heard this band before. Really interesting songs, vocals straight out of the 70’s (Wiki namechecks just about everybody as an influence - for me, Granduciel’s vocals remind me of Steve Forbert). But it’s the music that rules here. The ethereal sound of the guitars is a knockout. Well worth the trouble.
I have never consciously heard anything by the War on Drugs. It's got a strong influence of Americana-ish, but with a hazy spaced out production. It doesn't surprise me that the guy was largely writing about his own depression. It's a fair record, but didn't set my world aflame.
Unimpressed
Beautiful chords and immense lyrics. Love the rock tone tempered with that voice 7/10
like springsteen with better guitar and worse writing
Lost in the Dream is the third album by American indie rock band The War on Drugs. It is an indie rock album inspired by Americana and psychedelic rock, with themes about loneliness and depression. This critically acclaimed album performed well commercially but was only certified gold in the UK. It's an inviting and comforting album that contains a collection of dreamy vibes and changing moods that can only be truly realized with repeated listens. I appreciated the soft and slow rock sound present on this album. It was a touching record that has a lot of greatness to be discovered if you listen closely. Lost in the Dream is nowhere near my favorite album, but I'm glad I had the chance to give it a try. Now it's your turn.
Better than I expected it to be. The echo/reverb works really well for their styling, it has a momentum and a passion to it, An Ocean In Between The Waves is my favourite but piqued my attention to learn more. A high 3, not into very good territory, but could get there on more listens.
It's not terrible, but a little boring. Same level of intensity all the time. Sounds like one very long song. Favorite song: under the pressure
I don't see the influences from Bruce Springsteen or Neil Young and Crazy Horse - more like a mellow Bob Dylan. But I quite like the album.
The first two tracks are familiar and I like them. Listening to the rest of the record... Mellow. Nice sounds. A decent record.
Individual songs sound nice but this album feels more like two mixed albums than one coherent
Good
enjoyed this album, chill vibe- perfect for study. the run in for the first track genuinely hurt my ears and was tempted to not listen- the rest was lovely
It's the same and the same and the same for the entire album. There's one banger a couple of tacks in, but besides that it's a snooze fest for someone like me. However, if you really enjoy the sound and are not easily bored, then I guess it's alot of the good stuff.
Many of the reviews have commented on how pretty much all the songs sound the same at some point, and it's not much of an exaggeration. It's perfectly pleasant to listen to, but I never understood why it was so widely critically acclaimed. Looking at my four star ratings, most of them have some five star tracks, and this one has none anyway near that score. So, 3 it is for this samey wamey album.
First half great! Second half boring…
I actually enjoyed this album. It felt strange at times because there seemed to be an incongruity between the 70s rock n roll sounds and the indie baselayer but for the most part I think it worked for me.
Perfectly pleasant without standing out as anything more than that. Maybe if it were a band you were into this would be something to love, and I’m sure there will be albums on here that I feel that way about. Pheasant’s not bad. But it sort of passed me by a bit.
nice vibes I thought
Springsteen
- Never heard this album in full before - Always thought TWOD were decent, but nothing incredible and this kind of fits that - Good album though, just not higher than 3* - Fav songs: Red Eyes, An Ocean in Between the Waves, Eyes to the Wind
While I like this band sonically and at their "rockier" moments. I find them incredibly dull when they try to soften up. And this record definitely went on too long. I think, but I'm not convinced this band might benefit when you go see them live. Maybe I will one day! 7 out of 10
Not bad, but nothing ground breaking, got a bit boring at times Saved tracks: Red Eyes, An Ocean In Between The Waves, Burning
WOD bore me for the most part, but...If i forget that i'm listening and it blends into the background, i find myself really enjoying it. not sure what that says, but here we are
kind of a one dimensional album. But it was fine
This is a modern alt rock band that seems to have a lot of slower more atmospheric songs. I like them as something that I can just put on in the background and not really worry about. There isn't really much to say about the album. It's good, but not really something I would actively search for again. One detriment though is that the songs are extremely long. Would have been a solid 3/5, but is more of a low 3/5
Kinda spacy and chill. Not my usual thing but a nice listen
I've listened to TWOD's more recent songs from A Deeper Understanding and I Don't Live Here Anymore, but this was my first experience listening to a whole album by them--to be honest, I was a tad underwhelmed. I certainly like Granduciel's signature yacht-rock sound, but I found that throughout its decently long runtime (61 minutes), it didn't really flesh out the sound as much as I was expecting to. Certainly some fantastic tracks off this--Disappearing, Burning, and In Reverse were the main highlights (as well as the aptly-titled ambient interlude The Haunting Idle), but the rest didn't feel like it warranted its hour-long run time. Would've been a fantastic EP, but the padded length ended up hurting the album as a whole, unfortunately.
3.5/5
It has all the charm of indie rock that I've always loved. But tends to drag and get monotonous after a while.
Ballades, belle voix.
If I didn't know this came in 2014 it would've fooled me. They perfectly nailed the sound they were going for. They beat the Killers to the punch on making their own Springsteen album. It teeters right on the edge of me giving it a 4. Score: 70 Art: 50
It’s alright I guess. Chill.
Some great soundscapes but all a little samey to me.
Hmm, kind of like Springsteen mashed up with U2. Not my favorite, but it was pleasant enough for a single playthrough. Will have to play again some time.
That was not bad, I’m surprised, almost like if Paul Simon had Mogwai as a backing band. Almost, not quite. C
I've heard this before, and I'm not a very big fan of The War on Drugs to be honest. I can see why they are popular, but to me each song just feels too much like the same thing and becomes very predictable. The chord progressions are good, but I find the issue in the arrangements. Most of the songs it feels like there are no tempo variations, breaks or anything, and the tempo is usually way too fast for the song. Once the drums start (for which they always play use the most basic pattern there is with almost zero fills or variations) it just goes on repeat until the song ends with no finesse. Under the Pressure, Red Eyes, Burning for example is prime examples of this. In addition, I'm not a big fan of Adam Granduciel's tormented singing. His voice is unique in a way, and he doesn't sing false or anything, but I just don't like the style. Despite me being hung up on certain things, I still think there are some songs where these issues don't stand out as much, for example Suffering or Disappearing, and I usually like this type of genre. So it gets a 3 for me, but I had to revisit what I had given a 2 star rating to determine that I actually think this is a bit better than those.
Soothing Backgrounds, in part ambient Rock, very calm
while i had heard of this band, i had not actually heard any of their material. strong tom petty (wildflowers era) vibes. at times, the lead vocalist sounded like sting or don henley to me. interesting sound. solid effort.
Good chill 80s vibes coupled with some of the best 'WOO's in the game.
Reminded me of Tru Love and High Adventure at first, then dropped quickly into rentaElbow territory before becoming easy to live with once I zoned out of actively listening.
The "Americana" moniker overpowers this one. It definitely sounds like a mix of Tom Petty, Bryan Adams, and The Boss. I only like one of those three influences, which might be a contributing factor in the rating I'm giving this one.
British Sea Power meets Bruce Springsteen
Ok
And with his last breath Mark Knopfler gasped out ‘Take my haunted guitar and keep fighting the war on drugs….’
brothers in harms
Red Eyes, Under The Pressure and Burning are my favorite. I liked this, I hear a lot of Springsteen and a sprinkle of Dylan. I can see myself listening to some songs again in the future but also forgetting about this album too.
I guess I’m the odd man here. I didn’t hate this. But I look boo boo downer tunes quite a bit. Still don’t know that I’d rock out to this again.
Loved it insanely when it was first released and I still have no idea why. I'm sure it's because some music critics or Bono told me I'm supposed to love it, so I just went with it. Mainly while mowing the lawn. Did it make me mow my yard faster? I don't have to answer that. I do recall an urge to mow it in a different direction each time though. Sometimes I'd go in a criss-cross pattern, but that would only make want to listen to "Jump" by the dynamic duo Kris Kross. There was one mowing session where I only had time to mow the front yard before it started raining. Rather than going to mow the backyard when the rain disappeared, I just left to grow longer until the next mowing session. This allowed to me to tell my neighbors that I gave my yard a mullet - business in the front, party in the back. No one would ever admit this, but I GUARANTEE you some of those neighbors did the same thing with their yards and took all the credit for that lame joke. I'm done with mowing lawns for the most part now, which means I'm pretty much done with this "band" too. The lesson: Never trust a band that is actually just one dude who dicks around with Pro Tools to make albums. Plus, he's sleeping with Krysten Ritter. He doesn't need my approval.
Ladies and gentlemen Bob Dylan is floating in space. A neat little album that sounds like Americana mixed with neo-psychedelia and space rock, but not much to write home about. At least the soundscapes are chill.
Þetta er alveg áheyrilegt svo sem. Minnir mig dálítið á Dire Straits, sem er hrós, en rennur svolítið saman í eitt langt lag í hausnum á mér, sem er ekki kostur. Kannski vex þetta við frekari hlustun, en eftir þrjár er ég kominn með nóg í bili.
Defs one for Amelia but I didn't hate it
Okay. Liked the instrumentation, and the singing, it was a little too melodramatic for me, but it was good 👍
It's pretty good, I like the guys voice. Might listen to again. Songs that stood out to me, Under The Pressure, Red Eyes, Eyes to the wind
These songs are way too long. I don't usually have a problem with long songs but here it felt a bit forced
it's good, definitely of the era.
HL: "Under the Pressure", "An Ocean in Between the Waves", "Burning" 2nd WoD album I've heard, after 2021's "I Don't Live Here Anymore". I appreciate the spacey psychedelic elements in this one (they complement the album cover too), but IMO the newer album has slightly better songs. 3.5 February 23, 2023
Kinda think the same now as when this first came out. Very strong start which quickly drifts away and then picks up again towards the end. I still don’t get why this is so well loved by fans and critics. It’s decent; and had a massive influence on bands that have followed, but I don’t get why it gets mentioned in the same breath as records by The National or Walkmen.
Utterly inoffensive, some nice sounds, but won't be going back.
There was a nice sound to the album but the tracks sounded very samey. Nothing stood out it was just plesant to listen to in the background. Doubt I would listen again because the runtime is too long for the repetitive feeling of the songs. Highlights: Under The Pressure Red Eyes Burning
During 2014, this was one of my favourite albums from the year. However, I don't think it aged that well: songs I previously found mesmerising now leave me rather indifferent. Sure, the album has its moments. I admit to tilting towards the longer, ballad like tracks such as An Ocean in Between the Waves. However, in order to truly be able to get what Lost in the Dream tries to deliver, I find I need to leave everything else and truly concentrate on the music. Which, these days, is usually too much of an ask.
Heard it before?: No Enjoy it?: Yeah, it was something they really fills the room and had a very calming presence Favourite song: Track 2 - Red Eyes
Few good songs. Flowed well as an album. Songs tended to start slow and build. Kinda dreamy. 3 stats
Its ok. I like the sound of the songs in the beginning but after a while it gets boring because the sound keeps repeating and it just sounds flat. There's no ups and down. Barely and energy. Not for me but it's ok. The album cover is good though I like it.
There are two or three solid songs on this LP.
A solid 3/5 indie rock album for me! I liked the mix of folk and rock influences on it, but it seemed to keep leaving me hanging. The song structures sometimes droned on with little to no change, and the vocals didn't really drive like I would've preferred. I felt like I was left without a guide. However, I still think it has a lot of value and I absolutely understand why others really like it! In summary: pleasant and unoffensive, but not incredibly challenging or distinguishable. This isn't inherently bad, though!
Tough one to score. I enjoyed having it on in the background, but not a very memorable album. Strong 3/weak 4
A couple good tracks and great tight production but ultimately a bloated album that tends up linger on ideas far too long.
The first thing people will notice is how derivative his work is on others' work. The spacious synths look back on Dire Straits, the beat is a basic krautrock-style that was likely taken from garage revival bands (alongside the lofi vocal filter), and the guitar and vocal style shows signs of Bruce Springsteen (predominantly), Tom Petty, and Bob Dylan. Yes, all artists take influence from others, but it's never been more of an imitation than here. Of course, he's none of those artists. He doesn't have the energy, dynamic range, or personality of any of those artists, but that doesn't mean any of this is bad or underwhelming. In fact, the mellow vibe, basic beat and synths, and lofi vocals are characteristics that dominate much of generic hipster indie rock nowadays. We have a coherent mass of 10 tracks that do what we do well. Take away the sources and honestly it's hard to find a better Americana album not by The National, especially one that fits so well with the times. It's a bit long at an hour, with many arguable filler tracks like "Eyes to the Wind" and "Lost in the Dream" (the Dylan copycats), but the prolonged atmospheric synths seem to make up for what otherwise would be wasted time. The reverb synths do repeat themselves quite a bit, but not nearly as repetitive as those drum patterns which do get tiresome. Favorites: Red Eyes, Suffering, Disappearing, In Reverse
Interesting dreary, dream-like sound but ultimately the album falls short because of its rather long runtime and absence of real highlights
Quite good and calm. Easy to listen to.
Good
I tried listening to them back when they were a big deal, and didn't really get it. I was a little more receptive this time around but still not all that mind blowing
This was a pleasant listen but not much more. I’d never heard of this band so I came in with no expectations. The album started off strong and there were no bad songs, but it was pretty repetitive. I did find myself thinking “wow this part sounds like ——— (Dylan, Petty, Springsteen, Dire Straits, etc.)” a lot. This would make pretty good background music but I probably wouldn’t seek it out.
Very this century Bob Dylan, good lyrics, but every song seemed to be the same drum track and didn’t really grab me
I really wanted to like this more than I did, especially after reading on their spotify description about how many diverese genres they mix. But unfortunately all I heard all the way through was Springsteen meets Wilco. There were some soundscapes and noise that were very well made and ovbiously done with great skill but were over very quickly. The recording, songwriting and mixing on show is impressive and I did enjoy it, but I couldn't get over how let down I was, expecting something weird and interesting and just getting a big old slab of boring Americana. A complete lack of standout songs really seals the deal for me. I dont think ill be in a rush to revisit it.
So my cousin Paul loves War on Drugs and insisted I would love as well. I tried awhile back and retried again with this album. I really liked Under the Pressure, Red Eye and Lost in the Dream. But I kept feeling like I was hearing the same sound over and over again. It wasn't terrible, but the songs were long and unnecessarily drawn out. EVERY song. Again, it wasn't terrible and I think Mindy would really like this band too, but outside of a coupe songs, they were not for me. I wouldn't turn off if on, but I probably wouldn't seek out to play either. The genre it rolled into on my spotify had quite a few good songs after, including songs from Wilco and The National. Anyway, I listened at work and was OK. I wonder if I have a few beers and a couple tokes, I would enjoy more (what the hell am I saying? EVERYTHING is better after a coupe beers/tokes)? Maybe I give that a try over the weekend. Anyway OK, some good songs, but too much of the same sound. 2.5 for me. Will score a 3
Under the pressure-5 Red eyes-7 Suffering-7 An ocean in between waves-8 Disappearing-6 Eyes to the wind-8 The haunting idle-4 Burning-7 Lost in the dream-7 In reverse-8
a very smooth and easy listen it definitely overstays its welcome at times tho
dimestore bob dylan, but less twangy so an improvement for me.
Seems like another 3, some nice songwriting but not much stood out
atmospheric indie death cab for cutie rock with some 80s pop radio aesthetic
Intro, sounded like I was being abducted by a nomad isolated tribe in 19th Russia. Skins character that overdoes. I liked the long songs. The long guitar solos that you can take long night drives to, that make you feel that nothing can hurt you. Fearless.
Smooth and rolling album. All very melodic and easy on the ears, but each track is very similar.
This was... okay? Pretty forgettable. Kind of trying to be Tom Petty. Generic indie.
super chill
I love the first two tracks and I can appreciate the general quality of this record without getting excited by it. Neither Courtney Barnett or Kurt Vile are on the 1001 Albums list. Give me either of those two over this any day.
love the first 2 tracks - then goes off into sweeping introspective stuff which is a good listen.
3.5
It runs pretty long, and is pretty clearly derivative of a specific 80's sound.
It is very 80s like. Since I already lived through the 80-s, it's hard to get too excited about 80s2.1
Indie. Ni fu ni fa.
Amazing songs. Some a little too slow for me
It's like if you put Bob Dylan in a blender. I don't like Bob Dylan, but Dob Bylan right here has some nice production (and no harmonica) at least. First three songs were lovely, then it all got kind of samey and went on for far too long. I also really like the album cover. Gives me Dog Man Star vibes. I wish the music gave me those vibes as well, because you can never go wrong with some Dog Man Star vibes.
The singer feels like he is trying to be a cross between Tom Petty and Bob Dylan. Not sure which one he really wants to be. The lyrics sound like he's trying to be profound, so even though he sounds more like Petty, he wants to be Dylan. I like the soundscapes in the background of a number of the songs, which make the songs a bit... more. And The Haunting Idle was pretty good too. But ultimately I just didn't find anything here that stood out, made me go "wow!" It was still average-sounding rock. They were trying to be more than that, but I couldn't pick out anything... unique. So a big "meh" from me.
Prefs: Under the Pressure, Red Eyes, An Ocean in Between the Waves, Disappearing, Burning Moins pref: Suffering
Had not heard this band’s music before but I seem to remember their name. I like it. There’s a familiarity to the sound, most likely due to—as the Wikipedia entry describes—the influences on the style, so that feels comfortable to me. I like the way they put their songs together and perform them. Nicely done.
Pretty straight forward, decent to listen to but not stand out
Chill, but not my fav
Beetje slaapverwekkend, eerlijk gezegd.
Starts strong but kind of fades in interest. I almost really liked the album.
Definitely one for a particular meed I think.
I love The War on Drugs for their more recent albums (Deeper Understanding, I Don't Live Here...) but I haven't listened to this one. Excited to dig in! Update: Good record but a little meandering. I found myself looking at how much time was left in some of the songs to discover that while the main portion of the song had ended, there were still a few minutes of instrumental wankery to be had. I think later releases benefited from a little trimming. All that being said though, I enjoyed this a lot! The tracks sound very nostalgic like they're from some by-gone era we're all remembering fondly...which honestly could describe 2014 lol
• Nothing in the album stuck out as good or bad, though it was a calming listen. Favourite song: I have no idea, maybe Under the Pressure?
Enjoyed the album, not much to say about it though.
Slightly too somber for my tastes in the first listen through, it grew on me a couple tracks in but still not my favourite so far
very okay
I need to take more drugs
They have a wonderful sound. The combination of ultra-precise machine-like backbeat and canyon-sized echo on all the treble instruments really works. First half is extremely strong, but they’re kinda lacking in variety, so drags a little on the back half.
Took me a couple listens for this one to hit me. First pass was a more boring version of Dylan. Second pass was atmospheric, relaxing, and cool. 3/5
While I enjoy the overall style of the War on Drugs, I find aspects of this album a little boring. Sometimes it just goes too low key and is not my thing. 3/5
this is driving music (affectionate) but also sleeping music (derogatory)
Good, sometimes a little too Arcade Fire in their Springsteen mode.
Mostly enjoyed this one. Should listen again.
Started off well! Track 2 is a tune! Then it fizzled away for me!
Great vibe and melodies. The mix and overall feeling of the album is great and I would listen to it again. 3.5/5
This album got better as it went on. I liked its sound, but none of the songs jumped out at me. My favourite song was probably Lost in the Dream, but, again, nothing jumped out at me particularly.
The Springsteen influence is palpable, but I don't really think it holds up to that comparison. Springsteen, even during his ballads, has a lot more energy. There's also some notes of Arcade Fire in here, as well. That being said, the production is nice, and I like some of the soundscapes throughout the record. Favorite track: "An Ocean In Between the Waves"
Okay. Easy listening. Lead reminds me a bit of Paul Simon for some reason
"It's not that bad" - Ike I am in complete agreement with this assessment.
Not my particular cup of tea but makes for reasonable background listening.
Super chill vibes. Mix of classic sound and modern nuances.
Fretloze bass is altijd goed.
3.7
Some chill indie rock. I like this alright. Pretty sure I like their previous stuff better but haven't compared.
Listened Before? N This was pretty decent. Nice and mellow (a "vibe" as the kids say). Nothing stood out to me but it's well written and not bad to listen to. Strong U2 vibes but I far prefer Bono's vocals. This dude is hard to understand sometimes. Overall, I enjoyed it. Added to Library? N Songs added to playlist: Under the Pressure
I guess there's a need to add some contemporary albums to this 1001. This is really enjoyable but adds nothing to Henley/Springsteen/Petty who all have pioneered this sound. Still, I quite like it. More ethereal perhaps, haunting guitars and synths rather than rock.
Gods, just good
Vocals weren’t for me but instrumentals were very well done
Yawn, very dull
Musically, pretty interseting but it would be nice to understand some lyrics - maybe a little less reverb mixed on the vocals.
Best Song: Suffering. Thoughtful lyrics and this drawn out, echoey musical style. really feels like the distillation of the melancholy feeling that the rest of the album is going for. Worst Song: Eyes To The Wind. Leans a bit too heavily in the bluegrass/country domain for my tastes. Overall: Music to drive/stare out the window of a moving vehicle to. I can see how some people would love this, but it just doesn't match the type of music I typically like. It is inoffensive and pleasant to listen to, but doesn't do much to grab my attention.
Got pretty bored ngl
Kind of meh. Not a fan of emo.
Indie que entrega um clima etéreo.
Really atmospheric, had it's moments, however got very boring. Someone I bet you LOVES this band
The guitar really carries this album. I wasn't a fan of the vocals at all, but the rest of the instruments were complementary enough. The best parts of the album were the droning guitar solos, but unfortunately a lot of time was spent on more reserved indie rock type tunes that just weren't very interesting.
Guy sounds like Bob Dylan + Paul Simon
was good, need to listen to again but keen for a new album today
Dreamy and drenched in reverb, and unfortunately on too far on the bloated side to really see myself returning to much. It was a fantastic fit for this foggy morning, though; that was excellent coincidence.
Very akin to a drearier Arcade Fire. A good chunk of bloat, but it is some good rain music.
Very casual background vibe. Mellowed out music
Was OK for someone I'd never listened to before.
Reminds me of Bruce Sprinsteen for some reason. It's good, not a fan of the slower tracks mind
I didn’t know the E Street Band fired Springsteen and replaced him with someone boring
Just kinda long and consistently alright. 6/10
I have heard people raving on about this band for a while. I remember trying to get into them but never could. It is good and all but just a bit boring for me. Nothing terrible, just nothing special either
I love me some retro 80s music but this one sorta got boring by the end.
I should listen to more from them.
I loove this vibe! Wll definitely listen again
The Dire Straits it's cool to like. Reverb, motorik beats and synths. There are some good tunes here but they can start to blend together. Best Tracks: Under The Pressure; Red Eyes; Burning
Generally, The War On Drugs does nothing for me, yet I can see why this album is recognized as Granduciel's biggest achievement yet. It's just that, apart from some highlights here and there in those looooong tracks (see "Red Eyes" or "The Ocean Between The Waves", for instance), the music on *Lost In The Dream* is just too 'one-note' compared to things I usually like (okay, two-notes, as in "the same two chords" repeated and then transposed all over a song, ha ha). Lyrics are fine, with some striking one-liners here and there. Yet most of the compositions and arrangements are just too linear to seal the deal for me. Granduciel does his best Dylan impression on opener "Under The Pressure", then channels his inner Springsteen on " Red Eyes", often to great effects. But as much as I can appreciate those references, and as nice as this album *sounds* overall, its second part tends to fade away into the background as it drones on, one track blurring into the next without making much of a difference. I always try to keep an open mind, but clearly, I don't see what the fuss is all about with this borderline "bland"- band. I might reconsider that take, though, and so leave the door open for other listens. In the realm of acts inspired by Springsteen and the likes, I guess you can still consider "Lost In the Dream" as better than anything The Killers ever recorded, for instance. That's gotta count for something, right? :D Number of albums left to review or just listen to: more than 900, I've temporarily lost count here. Number of albums from the list I find relevant enough to be mandatory listens: approximately a half so far. Albums from the list I *might* include in mine later on: a quarter (including this one). Albums from the list I will certainly *not* include in mine (many others are more important): the last quarter.
Very chill and slow. I can enjoy this kind of music as background music but It didn't feel like anything more than that. Burning was probably the most memorable song from the Album but it felt like the album was meant to be listened to in its entirety. Album probably a 2.5 but ill give it a 3
Enjoyable, pleasant to the ear but didn’t set the Heather alight
I went in with an open mind, but while not bad, I wasn’t impressed. Just sounds like a modern Dire Straits.
This starts off nice and smooth. It's an easy listen, harkening back to 70s/80s singer / songwriter FM rock, Bob Segar and Jackson Brown come to mind. This is my first experience with The War On Drugs, and it was pleasant and soothing. 3/5.
From what I heard they were pretty good, I'll certainly listen to this again
Nice
A more recent band for this list. I bought this record when it was released and still go to it a few times a year. It's nice and chill, but with a lot happening. I'm glad Adam Granduciel made a record that got him a first date with Krysten Ritter, too. I think they're still together. Good job, pal. His guitar rig is incredible. Like so many signal paths routed through several very nice guitar amps. I like that his vocals are a blend of The Boss and Dylan.
Never heard of this. Thought I'd hate it. Actually really enjoyed it. I'm not sure why - it was just pleasant to listen to. Nothing earth shattering, just well-executed artsy rock stuff.
Very ethereal, but ultimately it tries too hard to emulate that New Wave-style synth sound from the 80s and ends up being forgettable in places. Standout tracks: Red Eyes Eyes to the Wind Lost in the Dream
Listening to this for a second time, I think I realised why I hadn't previously listened to this for a second time. Goddamn but these songs are just wiltingly long. I like the basic material they're made from—the tunes are good and I enjoy the crossover of 2010s indie with 80s classic rock—but they didn't need to be *quite* so much as they are...
‘Burning’ sounds like a Bruce Springsteen song but I enjoyed listening to it so three stars
Ranges between a sort of soft rock sound (meh) to a Vapor Wave sound (fuckin rules) Overall a lot more enjoyable than I thought it would be
3/5
Rating: 6/10
Didn't hate it. Album moved along and each song was as strong as the next. But in the end it's a one and done for me.
They try a few different styles, but none work particularly well. Only "An Ocean in Between the Waves" and maybe "Lost in a Dream" are fairly good tracks, in my opinion.3
I liked their sound but I didn't really hear anything distinctive.
First time with this band.
It’s nice but not for all the fuzz around it
Nothing of note, good nor bad.
Not great... 3?
This is what I wish Jakob Dylan and The Wallflowers sounded like.
I want to like it more than I do. I do like it, but it's just sort of "there". Doesn't excite me or move me. It's kind of that 2010 era of indie sensibility that is somewhat interesting and yet very palatable, which I think compromises too much on accessibility, at least for me.
Bom. Mas não ouvi muito.
Sounds like the 80s with better production. Catchy and calm.
The guy who wrote this list certainly has a type where indie rock is concerned. I liked this pretty well, but the limitations of the vocalist detracted from the music a bit for me, and rendered most of the lyrics indistinguishable. So if they were clever, they were lost on me.
Another mediocre album. It wasn't awful, but I can't imagine I'd ever go back and listen to it again.
As a guitarist the album is brilliant for painting dreamy fuzzy guitar filled landscapes, but as a listener the songs don’t really DO anything. They feel a bit lacklustre and drag on way too long. It’s a weird one, one half of me really enjoyed the loose and spacious atmosphere created by his guitar pedals, but the other half of me was bored out of my mind. 3/5 - Great music to fall asleep to.
mostly cheesy but really liked some of the more instrumental ambient tracks
When the album first started, it seemed to be a very familiar sound to me...although I don't think I have ever heard of the album nor artist. That familiarity was kind of comforting. Then as I listened a second and third time, it became less and less meaningful...kind of just bland. If I hear any tracks from the album in the future, there is a good chance that I may not even notice it in the background. I think I will have a response like "Meh, I think I have heard this before, but I don't think I really care..."
Not sure if I've never heard of the band before, or just didn't recognize the band name as a band name. The latter seems more likely. It's a pretty recent album and I really don't think it's inclusion is warranted. The singer has a good voice and the album probably takes up a particular niche in the music scene of the last years. But the reason that niche might still have been free might simply be that it's not very interesting. Previous decades had more than their fill of this sort of album and most likely with more interesting instrumentation. Yes, the minimalist bare bones approach in instrumentation and mixing help highlight the voice - but they are also very boring. Please turn that war up a couple of notches next time guys.
Trim some songs down and this could have been higher.
Not bad a bit mellow
Nice
Super easy to listen to. Good vibes ✌🏼 let's get lost in a dream babyyyy.
wasn't expecting to like it, long tracks but good listen
Yeah pretty good, nothing earth-shaking
3.5. Disco muy homogéneo y ambiental. Buen rollo para tener de fondo. Under the pressure y eyes to the wind las mejores en un primer contacto.
Indie. Ni fu ni fa.
It's a decent album, nothing really bad about it, but it's just kind of bland. Songs that seem to go on and on. Pleasant to listen to but just sort of boring. 2.5 stars, rounding up to 3 because I feel generous.
Lame indie rock. The vocals have an annoying fuzzy sound to them. On the track "Suffering", the singer sounds like that guy that took a pill in Ibiza.
One negative sign on an album, when I'm feeling thankful because it's surely about to end, and it's not even halfway through. I could appreciate the effort at the start of it, and then it went evolving and it became too modern too fast and at the same time, way too Americana. I'm not sure why this genre is choosing to bring back synth-pop, either. This makes sense on the list the way a lot of the 'world' entries make sense, because it's a weird sound and it's well executed. Best for when you're somehow in the mood for ambient/synth-Americana. Not really built for me, I found it cheesy more frequently than not, though there are some redeeming moments. 2.4/5
Nothing about this really stood out to me. It wasn’t awful but neither was it influential. This seems like mid 2000 navel gazing music by someone that watched Garden State too many times so I was surprised that it was from 2014 since that made it seem outdated to me also.
An REM with better songs, a more subdued Bob Dylan, and a lighter Dire Straits—but the conclusion remains no. Whenever I see a cover like this—a drab, mottled gray of mess, I don’t even want to pick up my headphones to listen.
I like Red Eye on release as a single. Never listened to the album and I’m glad I didn’t. This album isn’t really an album but an extended play of one song. One good song becomes serious when you hear it several times.
Chill but didn’t resonate
Not my favorite
Gets very repetitive Veet quickly. Using a drum machine on an album like this seems almost offensive.
A very serviceable, musically uninteresting experience. Lyrically, the record seemed typically depressing and had some nice moments, but with no real nuance. Musically, it was entirely bland, expressing the decent lyrics through very limited vocabulary. In a phrase: like trying to express deep feelings without speaking, moving, or having facial expressions.
There's a bit of Springsteen and Dylan in this, but mostly it reminds me of U2? And sure, I like Joshua Tree as much as the next girl, but the type of thing that's comes across as transcendently beautiful in 1987 is honestly just kind of typical by 2014?
I wanted to like this album but it was just boring. No excitement lyrically or musically
Yet another blah and unremarkable for me. I left not feeling any particular way about it other than I wouldn’t go out of my way to listen to this group again.
Meh. I wanted to like it more than I did.
There’s an old Futurama joke where the robot devil announces “Your lyrics lack subtlety! You can't just have your characters announce how they feel! That makes me feel angry!” The War on Drugs are constantly telling you exactly how to feel. The vocal delivery, the instrumentation, the lyrics (I assume - I can’t remember any) - everything points in the same direction. It’s all saying “we are trying really hard to make an album that moves you deeply”. Great art requires dissonance, a balance between tragedy and comedy. Without that tension, you’re left with mealy emotional mush with the staying power of a ‘happy anniversary’ card from the supermarket.
To much similarity, at least vocally, to Bob Dylan for my taste. Why anyone would choose to emulate Bob Dylan's vocal style is beyond me.
I got bored.
good
Not offensive. But, very derivative and boring. Nothing new or different here.
Maybe it's just me, but all of the songs kinda sound the same.
Don't know how to rate this one... It was completely inoffensive, but honestly, really just quite dull and uninspiring. The drum tracks are as vanilla as possible, there's melodies but nothing memorable, the vocals aren't anything special - occasionally sounds like a Bruce Springsteen impression. Not sure why this is as highly rated as it is and not sure why it's on the list, this was certainly influenced but I'm not convinced it's influential and I doubt I'll listen to any of it again. Favourite track: "An Ocean In Between The Waves" (and I had to go back and check it in the track listing because I had already forgotten which one it was since they all blurred together) - I guess that's maybe evidence that it's a cohesive album at least, though maybe homogeneous is a better word...
Dull
2.5 - Not bad but nothing memorable
I liked this recording. It was sort of background so I didn't give the lyrics much attention but I liked the music, the voices, the arrangements.
4/10 I've heard a few songs by this band but never delved too deep until now. My opinion: the band's name is far too interesting for such milquetoast music. This is the least adventurous, most derivative rock I've heard in a minute. Every song has a 3+ minute instrumental close, which is fine on occasion but painful when it's every single track. Ultimately this is coffeeshop background music, but like, the type that is so dull you don't even bother looking it up to see who originally sung it. I'm somewhere between offended that it's on the list and appalled that people actually think it's good enough to rate higher than a 2 or 3. That being said, there is nothing - absolutely nothing - wrong with this album. It's just painfully boring, and that, I'd argue, is worth a low rating.
While I do not think The War On Drugs is one of the more interesting indie bands from the 2010s, there is something here. Lost In The Dream is clearly supposed to be a kind of immersive, dreamy experience, and it is, sometimes. Lengthy, atmospheric indie songs abound here, and it's possible that I just need to spend more time with this band, but a lot of the time, these songs seem overlong, and I'm not sure the songwriting here can support this album's atmosphere. But every once in a while, Lost In The Dream manages to suck me in for just long enough that I can kind of see what they were going for here. There is something kind of compellingly beautiful and a little sad here. But too often, the full picture feels like a slog. I can see myself revisiting this album, but at the moment, I just don't know if I can go too high here. For everything cool that happens, there's some meandering that I can't really connect with, and the cumulative effect is on again, off again.
I'm not sure how to feel about this one, I've never been a massive fan of Americana, just the odd song here and there. It never intrigued me when it came out and listening to it a decade later I can't say I'm kicking myself for missing all the hype. Nothing horrible about but ultimately nothing memorable either.
Groupe inconnu. =>2/5
Too long
Singer songwriter stuff but it’s one note and can be found in other places.
Its fine. Some interesting tracks but not enough to keep me totally interested.
Really enjoyed their first two albums, but found this one somewhat underwhelming. Surprised it made it onto the list
I bought this when it was released idk wasn't into it these days
Bryan Adams meets The Cure
Vähän tämmöstä pusi-pruus springsteeniä, ei oikein napostellu
An updated take on Bruce Springsteen with some reverb that the hipsters loved
Not bad, but nothing really stood out either. Easy to listen to but also easy to ignore.
OK.
4/10
Nothing to see here. Move on. 2
This is very atmospheric, reminds me a lot of art rock and is great in the background. It's a mood and tonight, unfortunately, it is not the right mood for me. I did pick up on some like ambient country with some of these tracks.
That dreamy guitar style is not my thing
I somewhat enjoyed listening to this in the background but I found it very unmemorable. I couldn't point out a single song. A bit of a watered down LCD Soundsystem.
Two listens and it didn't really stick. I'm not a big fan of the kind of Americana that this resembles so it had an uphill battle with me.
boring slow music. Its well made, but its either boring or annoying and nothing in between.
So uneventful, I felt like I was listening to the same song over and over. It wasn't horrible, but very boring and uninspired.
Middle of the road listen Songs started to blend together by the midpoint
There are parts of this album I really really like- largely the atmospheric and ambient bits like the end of the first song or all of ”The Haunting Idle.” I just don’t care for these Springsteen-esque vocals very much. The world needs more ambient guitar. God I friggin hate Bruce.
I was lost in a dream. Cuz this was boring and I fell asleep.
Nice to listen to, but rather dull and uninspiring. I can see no reason why this album is on the list.
I found this record to be quite boring. It's soothing, sure, but there's just something about the production that makes it forgettable. Favourite Track(s): Suffering Least Favourite Track(s): The Haunting Idle
Another boring album. I don't get why this made the list.
