Reviews (page 6 of 7)

Meh. Voice was a little overkill but decent late grunge rock.

It was alright but I'm not super into riot grrl stuff.

Eh. Its ok

Nice but brickwalled

Cool, punky, rock

Little babies

sounded post-punk like a re-hash of Siouxie and the Banshees

Drive rock and roll music with women's vocals.

Liked it, wasn't expecting to. Punky, maybe post-punk. 3/5

Some catchy riffs & a decent punchy, punky sound. A solid 3.

3.5/5 seems pretty good deal, i'll relisten to judge.

This is annoying, haha. Is it actually a good album or is it just early Indy? The guitar riffs on the first few songs sound amateur, basic, repetitive. I can totally imagine Carrie Brownstein just clanging away on the guitar, LOL. The vocal delivery is always interesting. Album gets more nuanced halfway through. Actually enjoyed “Words and Guitar” and felt that “Not What You Want” rocked. This album started as an Anthrax level 1 but fought its way back to a Dusty Springfield 3.

Better than expected. Thought I didn't like Sleater Kinney but some good riffs

Neo punk alt.rock record which was celebrated back in the late 90s. It has a bunch of good songs, but now sounds a bit dated and does not feel as an essential listening

Punk-rock femenino.

Oh Riot Grrl, you rock my world. Oh to be in Seattle at the turn of the Millennium hearing this in a smoky pool hall. Carrie Brownstein's voice is warbly almost too warbly but the energy of what's going on justifies it. Surfy, punky and quick. It's hard not to groove here. Totally rad, but it hasn't aged as well as it could have. Not great at all times, but there's some gems here. The back half really shines, especially "Buy her candy"

Hey look, it's Carrie from Portlandia! I think I've heard just the newest album from Sleater-Kinney prior to this. They're a solid punk band, a bit more polished than the garage-band variety of punk, but with the same energy. I don't love the vocals, but they're good on a few tracks. Overall, this isn't an album I'd return to but it's not bad, still a couple tracks that I did enjoy. Always a pleasure to get some music from female artists on this list! Favorite tracks: One More Hour, Babies. Album art: This one's cool, I like the different panels for the three band members. Definitely fits the '90s very well. 3/5

Interesting. Sort of liked it!

I appreciate the aesthetic here. "Bedroom Production" style Punk/Riot Grrrl always works for me since it is still in many ways, a push back on the "Old Boys Club" of music. Interesting that one of the members was part of Portlandia which helped their revival. That said, I would much rather listen to this in a loud dive-venue, in my experience that's where this music has the most power. Listening to it outside of that just isn't the same. Live it would be 4/5, but recorded it's a 3/5. It is a little same-y as well, but again it works better as a live experience for me.

Bastante agradable el punkcito que traen estas morras, rolas con power y sin el mame de hoy en día

too punk, didn't love the whiny voice - needed a lil more pop

I mean, it's not a bad album, but I was not nearly as impressed as I expected to be...

Feminist Punk...I really appreciate the message and movement. Too bad I did not grow up with this movement...women are still underrepresented in this scene. Despite their strong message, their style is not very mature yet in this album. And I don‘t particularly like Brownstein‘s voice (too much vibrato).

This album would have benefited from having a different lead vocalist, but it's not bad. Maybe more misses than hits, but the hits are solid. Best track: Heart Factory

Very strong 3. Vocal performances stand out.

In one ear at out the other.

I do not like punk, and I do not like being shrieked/wailed at for 30 minutes straight. I guess the guitar work/sound is solid. But this is a no for me dawg.

Every song sounded the same to me. Not a fan.

Listened to it yesterday and don’t remember it.

Sans intérêt

Who let the sheep out? 2,5

I just can't, and it's unfortunate for had I discovered this in the 90s I bet I'd've love it

Was not aware of, and when came up was quite looking forward to. And then I played it and; 30 minutes of that voice was not that pleasant. Suppose it gets the vibe and message across in the way they want, but just found it somewhat painful. Which is a shame as the music and songs are up maybe my street, but the vocals grate and annoy so much I couldn’t tell. Sorry can’t get past that one main component 2 Star

Yeah... good on these women for making this, I can feel the feminist energy and raw passion that they have in producing this Grrrl album. But man, I'm not a fan of this overly grating punky sound.

It has all the components for me to really enjoy, but somehow fell flat.

The riot grrrl sound really isn't for me.

Weil, I can respect the emotion she put into each song, it just did not resonate with me.

Mehhh, mucho ruido

I was at first confused because I thought this band was the inspiration for a fantastically demented Canadian TV show. I was mistaken because that shows name is Letter Kinney. Check it out….so good. As for this album……it’s mid, at best.

Where do I find 1001 Albums With Good Vocals? This won't be on there.

Eipä oikein tarjoa mitään erikoista, aika perus punk/indie rokkia. Ois muuten perusvarma 3 tähteä, mutta tuo vapiseva laulutyyli on sit pikkasen rasittava. Parhaat: Things You Say, The Drama You've Been Craving

**An ok album

I wish I could rate this album higher.

no me gusto mucho la verdad, not my type of music. tiene un par de partes en algunos temas que me gustaron, pero su voz me irrita un poco, no me guta

I'm having a hard time getting past the lead vocalist's yodels to be able to properly critique this album. It seems like it has all the pieces that would click with me, but her voice is just so grating. Would probably be a 3.5/4 star album with different lead vocals

A whole lot of out-of-key hootin’ and hollering’ all over this. At least the instrumentals aren’t terrible.

I don't like the vocals.

College Rock of the mediocre kind

Definitely just hot noise to me. Like, power to these women, but I need to clean my ears out with better tunes now.

To be honest... not a fan. I've definitely heard much worse; I'm not saying that this is terrible, I'm just saying that this may not be my first choice in style of music. There was never really a point within the album where I started to connect to the music or kind of start feeling what it was throwing at me. If anything, I felt quite bored. It sounds harsh, because the music isn't terrible, but I just struggled to find much enjoyment. The vocals are really well-crafted, but there is nothing definitive that really hits emotionally or resonates with me at all. There was only really one track that stood out slightly more compared to the others, but nothing overly special, in my opinion. Stand-out track: Dig Me Out

Very generic, every song sounds the same. Sometimes I didn’t realize when it switched tracks. Glad it was short.

Wow, her voice is a lot! I found it so distracting that I almost had to stop listening. Sorry, whilst I enjoyed the music and lyrics, the singing was just annoying! A level of vibrato that should only belong to goats! I did enjoy the track Jenny.

Started with my volume at about 65%, and had to turn it down 5% with each subsequent song. Man those vocals are grating. Overall production is good, and I get what they were going for. But it just gets really annoying really fast.

Every song is OK, but they are all basically the same, and once I had heard half of them I had heard more than enough. Typical late-90s whiny American singing style, only really unusual (for this list at least) in that it's female-led. (I see a lot of people complaining about the vocals, but I was really thinking that she sounded like she was trying to copy the nasal vocal style of other bands, which I also dislike.) According to Wikipedia this is a riot grrl band? I really thought riot grrl would be more aggressive, this is very standard. Maybe I would like the messages of the songs if I they could hold my attention musically. I liked the heavier sound of the final track Jenny, but that was the only track where my enjoyment rose anywhere above tepid.

Its good except the vocal get on your nerves rather quickly.

Kom seg litt på slutten, men stygg stemme

People were doing way too much heroin in the 90s

Good album, love the music. The really high vibrato vocals really get to me after a few songs. I think it’s the combination of the vocals and the shouted way they are sung. I’m just fatigued listening to it. For me it’s really distracting - enough to go from 3 stars to 2.

I can see why people dig this but it doesn’t do it for me. I am ambivalent about Riot Grrrl music in general and this encapsulates that sound.

Energetic and annoying as hell.

too strident for my earballs :(

I don't really care for the voices. The tempo is fun. It's not BAD but definitely not my thing.

Very much a snapshot in time. Really only the kind of angst that could only exist in the suburban ennui of the Clinton administration. It was created there and there it shall remain.

The instrumentation was fine, but personally, I think that the lead singers voice was a bit annoying at times. I don't really know what it's called exactly, but the closest thing I can compare it to is when someone is talking and their voice is shaky.

FAUX !

I’d never heard of Sleater-Kinney before today’s listen of Dig Me Out, so I was genuinely looking forward to it. Going in, I’d seen a lot of really strong reviews, which probably raised my expectations. But as I listened, I struggled to see where all the 5/5 praise was coming from. To me, it felt like fairly standard 90s punk rock. There’s nothing bad about it at all, but nothing really stood out either. The guitars are probably the strongest part of the album, there’s a good raw energy and some solid riffs throughout. The vocals, though, weren’t really for me, which made it harder to fully get into the record. It’s one of those albums where everything is decent, but very little pulls you back in for another listen. Favourite tracks: Dig Me Out and Turn It On Least favourite tracks: Nothing terrible, everything is worth a listen Album artwork: Cool cover, fits the style of the album

I know the name of this band and that’s all. Listening no I’m surprised I didn’t see them live in the 90s. This is ok. Something is not sitting right with me. Can’t put my finger on it. It does get better as it goes.

Riot grrrl!

Like the music, didn't like the vocals - 2 stars

If I wanted to listen to a chick whine and bark at me, I’d take a long road trip with my wife and force her to ride shotgun. At one point I even thought the guitars were pissed at me for whatever it was I supposedly did. The lead singers vibrato grew tiresome by the third song which means there was only ten more songs of agony left to be heard. If we could lose the vocals and make this an instrumental album it would be exponentially better but it is what it is.

I didn't like the vocals at all. Too screamy, too buried in the mix just not my thing at all. The music isn't bad but not good enough (for me) to put up with vocals that I dislike. Dig Me Out is another album that I didn't hate but also not an album I will ever hear again. The album cover art is clever, a homage to The Kinks' 1965 album Kontroversy *(*⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️) cute job!

Tony hawk music

I was hyped to listen to some female-lead rock, having recently took a liking to the song "Seether" by Veruca Salt. However, I don't think this lives up to that standard. I don't particularly find this melodious in any sense for it to be catchy. A combination of obnoxious vocal delivery and pretty pointless lyrics. But yet again, I think that's the point of the Punk rock attitude. On the bright side, decent guitar rhythms and a very energetic sound. Safe to say that the Riot grrrl movement is not my cup of tea in Rock. Slightly unbearable album.

I’ve always wanted to like S-K more than I do. I saw them about twenty years ago, and it was a great show. Their records though strike me as just stereotypical 90’s angry rock. At the time, they may have seemed different and emotive, but now it’s like a trope. I can’t see any situation other than ticking off boxes on a list like this where I’d choose to listen to these vocals. It maybe didn’t help that a car alarm was going off outside my apartment for hours before and during listening to this- or perhaps those were the perfect conditions. This record encapsulates, maybe intentionally, irritation. Definitely not for me.

Хз не мое

Album was ok, really of its time. Quite a basic production.

I cannot handle the warble. It’s a shame as there might be some decent songs underneath it.

I want to support women-led bands, but the braying vocals and tinny guitars just aren’t appealing to me.

I don’t hate it, it’s just not my genre. Likes: One More Hour, Little Babies

Disappointed. Started off ok but then every tracked sounded the same.

No standouts

Yelly girl punk? No. God no. Make it stop.

Strange that I roll this album now. Granted, I've never heard of this album or artist before, though judging by the cover I expect that I'm in for something similar to Le Tigre's debut album, which I inexplicably decided to give a relisten a few days ago. These ears respect wahmen, so I guess I'm curious to give this one a listen. May as well get into it. Yeah, pretty similar to Le Tigre, albeit properly mastered this time. Hmm. I thought this was pretty shit. The songwriting brings out the absolute worst of these vocalists. I dislike warbling falsettos wherever I encounter them, and these vocals are uniquely offensive with how shrill, yet smoothed-out they are. The instrumentals are a more adept offering. The hooks are solid, and the songs segue and transform to respectable degree. Truth be told, I don't like this punky, garage-rocky sound and the instrumentals are generally pretty samey, but I respect them on account of being a competent showing from the genre. Overall, this album made for a pretty dull and occasionally irritating listen, but I salute that short runtime. Book time. "...a perfect blend of ideology, attitude, and wicked riffs." Nothing else in there of note. Wikipedia says this album was the band's breakthrough release and received a lot of attention from critics at the time. We're really doing this pick? I suppose I'm favourable to it on the grounds of it being pretty far-removed from the norm, but there's gotta be better lady-centered music than this. Granted, I'm not a patron of female punk music, so it's not like I know any better. I suppose I cosign this inclusion.

The singing wasn't my thing, but the instrumentals were nice.

Not my cup of tea...

Not my cup of tea. But enjoyed it in parts.

In a nutshell: rock your own way Sleater-Kinney passed me by as a young teen. Teen me would have liked the guitars and the beat. Adult me doesn't mind this album. I'm not a fan of staccato voices overall. Carrie (or is Corrin on lead vocals here?) is indistinguishable. Which is a shame, because the lyrics are just as important as the music on a punk rock meets riot grrrl album. Dig Me out, like Le Tigre's self titled, is one of those albums that encapsulated a movement as well as a microgenre. It's not for me but I can definitely see its worth. Overall: 4/10

When Florence Welch shouts at me, I could listen all day. When Corin Tucker shouts at me, it reminds me of Alanis Morrisette and I want to run away.

They are songs. With melodies.

no thanks.

I hate to sound like an incel, but Sleater-Kinney is essentially a novelty act. Yes, they are abrasive lesbian feminist rockers and that's neat. But there is nothing memorable about the songs on this album, other than the shouty vocals. Their inclusion as an 'important' band seems derived almost completely from their 'unique' identity among rockers. But there are so many better lesbians.

I liked Heat Factory. In general, the back and forth of Sleater and Kinney was cool. Great concept for a punk band, but I wasnt wild about the tunes. 2.5 stars Im wondering how influential this was. The wiki cites REM, MCR and Green Day

Didn’t really connect with this too much. Was ok in patches but overall listening experience was not that enjoyable.

Highlights: - Jennie

I like the feminist punk movement, I just wish they didn't all have banshee screeching vocalists

There are some Punk bands that I like, although it's not my usual kind of music (anymore). I've never heard of this band or any of their songs. It's okay-ish, though nothing remarkable or memorable.

I wanted to like this but it didn't check enough boxes for me. Sort of punk, sort of grunge, sort of indie? I didn't like the vocals even though the lyrics are good. Musically not as catchy as Veruca Salt.

Punk rock

I'm sorry but Carrie Brownstein's vibratto really gets on my nerves (assuming it's her). I didn't see or feel much depth to the songs which sounded more like a series of unfinished demos without any bass present.

I couldn’t get into this one. The music wasn’t bad, but the vocals were hard to listen to. Too much falsetto or whatever it was that didn’t fit in with the music.

Fun punk garage rock vibes with some catch ones

Sounds like a teenagers’ band playing in the garage.

Quite bad

Didn't like at all! The vocals were either dreary or screaming.

A band that I'd probably enjoy live with a couple mates but one I don't enjoy listening to on my way to work.

So so. Kind of weird

Me ha gustado en general pero sin nada que destacar

Found this to be fairly generic angry girl rock

listening to all of these albums is so interesting because i can pinpoint exactly which modern artists have taken inspiration from which albums. in this case wet leg comes to mind

ahhhh too much sound!!!!!

It was alright. Listened to on a flight and fell asleep halfway through

It was ok just not my style of music. It was just too slow

Groupe inconnu. =>2/5

It's ok. You go girls. 2.5/5

Not a fan of the screaming women in this. Nice to test, but don't think it's going to grow on me - opting this one out of my collection I think.

The vocals were too high and shrill and the music wasn’t too great either.

Didn’t do it for me.

No bueno

Ok for grunge.

Can't even remember listening to it. Didn't interest me.

Liked it at first, but then I started to enjoy it less as it went on.

I really liked the music but not a fan of the vocals

This punk rock album is like a crowded room of sparring voices—its tangled guitars and pounding drums buzz with restless energy, the vocals flare with conviction and strain, and while its tension over identity and power crackles vividly, the constant clamor can grow tiring.

Thought I might like this — all female alternative band, love Carrie as an actress. Love the energy of the band but the songs, not so much. Plus overly shouty vocals.

This is #day420 of my #1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie challenge, and… an absolute no-name for me here. Some tight fem punk rock with plenty of '90s flair. Is this what they call riot grrrl? As others have pointed out, though, and I'll echo it, the lead vocals get extremely grating sooner than you think. Guess I'm landing on a 2 out of 5 eventually. Looking forward to #day421.

Suck City.

They toured with Wilco a bunch of years ago and I tried to like them but I don’t. It’s the voice.

I really want to like SK but my god her voice is like nails on a chalkboard for me. She hits the same note in every song. I can't even hear if the guitars are doing anything cool because all I hear is her voice.

Not for me

Outside of the opening track, every other song sounds like the same bland alternative Rock. Favorite Track: "Dig Me Out".

Sleater-Kinney seems like a band I would be into. A 90's feminist, alt-rock/riotgrrrl trio? Yes, please. However, Brownstein's voice is a little tough to digest. By the way extension, the album suffers. Sadly, I'm just not into it.

Didnt listen to full album. Girls rock.

I’m ok not really liking this. Little Babies was kinda fun.

Der Titelsong „Dig Me Out“ eröffnet kompromisslos, während „Words and Guitar“ die Energie des Albums bündelt.

Not my favorite

I think the word that best describes this album is... Shit.

Hmmm, a lot of screeching vocals on this backed up by mediocre indie riffs. Not one song is memorable in my opinion.

Boring.

I love that this list included Riot Grrl music because I do think there is a heavy male bias in this list. While this isn't an album I would spin on my own, it was still refreshing to hear this.

Repetitive & whiny vocals. Still struggling to fully appreciate the more punk offerings on this list.

Album was solid, not really for me but not bad. 5.3/10

Just meh, nothing really stood out.

Especially the vocal production is a bit too raw and grating for my taste. And I fully accept that a lot of people will say that it's a sacrilege to say that because it's that grating quality that actually defines this record and makes it great. I still find this more than decent - I just find myself preferring their later records, which to me still retain plenty of rawness. But, contrary to this album, they don't sound like the've done a proper studio recording of all the instruments, but took all the vocals from a rehearsal room recording done using a cheap tape recorder.

2 stars – Dig Me Out This wasn’t the kind of Seattle sound I was hoping for. I was thinking grunge or something a little more raw and heavy. Instead, I got enough vibrato to make it sound like a goat choir. I get that Sleater-Kinney has a big following and a lot of influence, but this one didn’t land for me. Felt more like noise than music at times. Not the worst thing I’ve ever heard, but I won’t be coming back to it.

Garage band sound. Grungy punk rock. Album overall sounded the same. Leaning heavy on that garage punk rock theme. Nothing stood out since the songs all blended together in sound.

Interesting

The singer in this felt like a parody to me and I just couldn't get into it.

The music is good -- but the vocals are just too angsty

I tried to like it but it’s just not for me

Gurl-Punk

This album is supposed to tick all the boxes for me - punk rock, female vocalist - but unfortunately I didn't enjoy being yelled at for 30 consecutive minutes.

Don't get it

It’s a lot

It turns out my teenage angst is not dead, it was just sleeping inside of me, and Sleater-Kinney woke it up. Not exactly a great feeling, or appropriate for my current role in society. With true respect, I'm sticking with my standard "this is okay" rating of two stars.

Musically, the instrumentation on this album was slightly better than average. The production was raw, featuring a lot of distorted guitars that added to its gritty feel. As for the lyrics, they sounded like the musings of people half my age, full of angst and still trying to figure things out. While the album was a decent listen, it’s not something I would revisit.

Good energy but I don't like the voice and delivery.

Cutsie for the sake of being cute, is this for real?

Alright

Simply didn’t like, especially the vocals.

Definitely not for me. Found the voice shrill. Some parts I could see myself listening to.

Noisy. Vocals are quite shrill and grating. Repetitive instrumentals and lyrics.

A bit too much going on here and I didn’t care for it. 2.5/5

A little too noisy for me. 2.5

Not terrible but I’m just not really a fan of female vocals.

Not for me

Not for me!

Yelling over the loud simple chord changes doesn’t make you a good singer.

дослушала и слава богу

if you're into this kind of grungey indie-rock just go listen to Mudhoney, or something else better

I don't like the lead singer's voice. I think the main problem, the one that so many other reviewers are finding it difficult to pin down, is the extremely rapid vibrato she tries to squeeze into every note. It's... well, irritating. The melodies are also extremely basic, so there's little to make you want to sing along. But if I imagine the music without that shrieky-sounding wavering (and just a normal, high, clear vocal), coupled with some more interesting chords and melodies, it's great. Everything else about the music is straightforward, aggressive, invigorating. Nothing particularly special for its time, considering it sounds like punk releases from 20 years earlier, but it's perfectly good as punk goes. The improved production (compared to the 70s) is also a welcome addition. But if you have one bad omnipresent element, it lowers the quality of the entire album. The top-rated reviewer here seems to suspect that any dislike of the lead singer's voice in Sleater-Kinney is a result of sexism. I doubt that, mostly because there are countless male punk singers that are just as bad or worse. I've given my fair share of 1's and 2's to punk albums on account of a singer ruining a record. Dig Me Out is no different. I will also add that there's not much of an "album experience" here. No ups and downs, no changes in mood to bring the listener along on a journey. It's kind of emotionally monotonous, even if that emotion is a pretty darn exciting one. We need some ballads up in this joint. 2/5 Key tracks: Dig Me Out, One More Hour, Jenny

Bit waily for me

A solid album, though the tracks kind of blended together. There wasn't a ton of variety so nothing really jumped out but the energy and performances were mostly good. I think Carrie has a very strong voice but it became kind of grating throughout the runtime. I really liked Things You Say.

I liked the rythms but it's too screamy for me

The vocals on this are absolutely grating.

too rowdy for me

I thought I was going to like this but I REALLY disliked it. I just kept thinking it’s not melodic at all and I need a melody. Would give a 1 but I already feel like a bad riot grrly as it is.

not so much my cup of tea..

Great instrumentals but the vocal performance is…not good.

Not poorly done but not great and not my style. If this is mandatory listening I missed something in my listen.

3.5/10

Didn’t finish it. Not for me.

Grunge alt rock with terrible female vocalist

I don't care for the lead singer's vocals at all.

at first glance, i was super excited for this. all girl punk bands have been my jam lately and I was super eager for this. however, it just kinda fell flat for me. i understand that it was supposed to be punky, but the guitars came across as grating and it just didn't really pull me in.

Quintessential 2 star here.

This is a tough one. Every song has a glimpse of greatness, but overall I didn't really like any of it. The vocals are definitely the biggest drawback for me.

Fun music, annoying vocals

that voice is horrific

This album just didn’t click with me. The shouty, abrasive vocal style was a significant barrier—I found it so off-putting that it overshadowed any potential enjoyment of the music itself. That said, I can appreciate and respect the energy and message the band brings to their work. While it’s not for me, I understand why others might connect with it on a deeper level. Score: 2/5

Not for me

I like the vibe, but the vocals are just too shriek-y.

One of the singers had an Alanis Morissett vibe but in a screachy way. It was not an enjoyable album for me.

Hieno ääni laulajalla. Olisin toivonut häpeilemättömämpiä koukkuja, tarttuvuutta kuten kakkosbiisissä.

It's a pass from me. It wasn't entirely without merit, I made it through the whole album so there must be some musicality in there. The vocals were pretty awful. It just sounded like one long track, there was no discernible difference - to me at least.

I was an angry young man in the 90’s who had a brief tolerance for abrasive screechy music. But I was always a soft boy at heart. I had liked poppy-nice-sounding-with-maybe-a-little-bit-of-rock-&-roll music up until that point in my life and I’ve liked poppy-nice-sounding-with-maybe-a-little-bit-of-rock-&-roll music since then. But if you made loud angry abrasive rock in the 90’s, you might have caught me at just the right time and nostalgia may make it to where I still enjoy your music a bit even now when I’m old and soft as tissue paper. See Youth, Sonic. But I did not listen to Sleater-Kinney in the 90’s and have zero nostalgia for this and therefore it is very much not my jam. It’s too loud, too angry, too harsh and too screechy. Sleater-Kinney would go on to make an album in 2015 that I liked some of the tracks off of, especially the slow quiet one. But this album isn’t really doing it for me.

I wanted so badly to like this - it's brash, confident, feminist, and extremely gay punk rock, and I have a huge crush on Carrie Brownstein (who I didn't realize was part of this band; I know her from Portlandia). But I just don't like any vocalist, male or female, shouting at me.

I really just don't care for Sleater-Kinney, maybe I wasn't born early enough to find them as revolutionary as some people seem to think they are

A poor mans X-Ray specs!

I just can't get past the vocals. Everything else is fine, but it just sounds like a mosquito on the mic. Too much vibrato/dissonance and too constant for me.

Pop rock, with warbly vocals, reminds me of B-52s rock lobster - which is ok in small doses, but is a bit much for an entire album

Not my favorite genre of music. To me it sounded same-y throughout, but there were fun songs on there like Dig Me Out and Heart Factory. That said I bet seeing them at a show when I was young would have rocked and I can see how this album is on here even if it's not my cup of tea.

A bit too whiny and pitchy but I am not signed to a record like this band

musically this was a fun listen. but enjoying the album was way overshadowed by the vocals. just awful-way too much vibrato/pitchy. at least it was over fast.

It blends two things I already find hard to get into, indie rock and punk. It all sounds the same, there wasn't one standout song I would listen to again. It wasn't terrible.

Other than the shrieking and screaming, this has the potential to be good. Having seen them live as an opener for Wilco, unfortunately, confirms that potential is tucked firmly away out of reach.

Was not what I hoped it would be. It’s not a bad sounding alternative album but some sons. I’ve just had enough of her voice. Also, the music is nothing special so it gets old quick. 2/5.

nice vibes, but too much the same vibe all over the album

Levy alkaa kovalla poljennalla ja hiipuu edetessään. Kolmena eri päivänä kuunneltu ja aina sama lopputulos, fiilis lässähtää levyn edetessä. 2+

Meni joutavan puolelle. Ei jäänyt oikein mitään käteen, vaikka ihan kuunneltava levy kuitenkin

Go Carrie!

kinda screechy

STANDOUTS: naddda. OVERALL: 2/5; riot grrrl music...is ALSO not my thing.

Girl punk. Sounds like music made for a tv show or a movie about girl punks. Borderline video game music made to be a big moment in a video game for the female protagonist. The instrumentals are fine to good throughout but the singing is just one tone yelling. Can’t understand anything she is yelling and there is zero vocal range. The vocals really just drag the whole thing down. 4/10

I really struggled with this. I'm not sure what mood I'd have to be in to appreciate it, but it's not a mood I'm in very often. Not to my taste sadly.

Another album that shouldn't be on this list.

didn't dig it

Not my thing

If you like 90s indie rock, you'll probably love this. One of those album that sounds like it knows what it it's doing, but is not to my taste. It feels too ploddy and one-dimensional, mood-wise. The sort of thing that P J Harvey did so much better, and with more dynamic range.

This was a decent album. I remember about a decade ago or so this "style" sort of like a really raw / garage like sound for punk was really in. I was really surprised that they founded in 1994. That's awesome. Decent album, and I'd like to go back and listen to some of their other things to see how their sound has changed.

The vocals are too “shrieky” for my taste

Not my taste.

I've read that the vocals for Sleater-Kinney are love it or hate it. Personally find the vocals difficult to listen to. I can get into vocals that involve a lot of yelling at times, but the heavy vibrato along with the relentlessness of it makes it sound one dimensional and grating. Instrumentally the band sounds alright, but not particularly great. Probably a much funner band to hear live than on record

The vocals. I could happily listen to an instrumental version of the whole album. But alas, the vocals.

Rock del ruidoso y sin mucho más. Canta una mina. Algún que otro arreglito.

Nah, not for me.

I know people that would love this but i found it mostly annoying :/ sry

Not for me

Was intrigued by the first song but it got more and more grating as the album went on. Lasted till half way. Vocals got unlistenable, which is pretty brutal given some of the vocals on things I actually like. Not quite sure why it's on this list.

Eh, very same across all the songs.

I was not previously familiar with the artist or album. I found this to be a little harsh for me. The punk sensibilities are there, but I just did not enjoy it. The vocals were harsh on some tracks and the instrumentation was not particularly interesting. A bit repetitive in some parts too. Some tracks were tolerable but overall it was not for me. Won't be coming back to this one.

Some cool songs. Some not so cool. Not for me

The definition of original punk to me is ‘purposefully shit’, but then post-punk and emo came along with ‘what if we took the good bits of punk but could actually sing in tune and play our instruments’ - this is late enough that they should have taken a bit more of a cue from that movement. A bit too early punk for me - some bands need to have the guts to tell their singer they shouldn’t be the singer of the band anymore but they can stay and play guitar. I can imagine seeing them at this old venue in Croydon that I can’t remember the name of, and then never hearing from them again. But here they are? Total fluke. HOWEVER good on them for being women in this scene at that time, can’t have been easy.

No thank you...

🥱 another old rock band

Kinda shouty. There's probably a reason I didn't pay much attention to it in the 90s.

Niet echt mn dingetje

I feel like a bad feminist that I don't like this band more or at all. Just no

Hard to listen to... not bad, not great.

This was not for me.

"OK, who believes that this album should be on this list?!? I'll wait. ... Anyone?!? ... Hello?!?" (Crickets.) (Cue Tumbleweed ...) 1.5/5

Man, it only took a few seconds to know that the vocals are not for me. The music is already rough and grating, why the voice, too? The vocals did get slightly better after track one, but still.. way too much vibrato here.

Feminist punk not really my deal but cool music

Rock Musik, aber auf eine Art, die ich nicht mag. Die Sängerin klingt, als wenn sie nur rumschreit

I fully appreciate that riot grrrrl is not made for me, so all criticism is moot. Musically it’s not bad, vocals are too messy.

I could take or leave Sleater Kinney but great guitar sound. I was a bit put off by the constant vibratto vocals. Less is more with that sort of thing. I don't know how to say I love the Riot Grrrl movement for representation in punk and music more generally without sounding extremely patronising like I'm patting them on the head so I'll just stop

Little punks! I was bored.

Never heard of this band. Will probably never hear of them again

Like the music but don’t care for the singing style. It’s a bit warbley. But it’s right in my wheelhouse/era when I started loving music.

Was expecting something sloppier/unformed but it's fairly cohesive, although it sounds more early-mid 90s. I don't care for the singer's vibrato. Probably better in context. 2.8

Not a bad album, but the vocals are the biggest drawback. The lead singer's vice reminds me of the first few years a child is trying to sing with an obvious, uncontrolled, and forced vibrato. "Things You Say" would be so much better if the vibrato was taken out completely from her vocals. Side Note Words and Guitar should have been cut from the album. It would be an instant skip from me.

Very shouty, but not of the kick my heels up variety, more of the shut the fuck up, you're annoying me variety.

I don’t think the compositions are very cohesive. The production separates the instruments specially, and each instrument tends to feel like it’s doing its own thing rather than playing together. Vocal melodies are bland.

listened 2x, nothing that great to me. 2.4/5

Not bad just not for me

Almost started to like it but didn't care for the vocals, too much yelling

The songs rock but I find the vocals shriek-y, like I'm being yelled at by my girlfriend for 35 minutes straight.

This is an angsty album. Maybe iconic for its time in the land of dude bands, but not grabbing me. 2*. Great energy to it.

I listened to most of this but it was more than enough. I'm not having my Christmas ruined. It's slightly better than the 1 stars I've given but not by much.

Being < 37 minutes saved it from a one.

I don't like this one. Everything about it is discordant. The singer's voice is off-tune and gritty. They may do this on purpose, or perhaps they just aren't very good. I'm not sure which would be worse.

I dig it, but not for me sadly.

Sången påminner om Feargal Sharkey. Tyvärr låter nästan allt likadant.

About half way through this album this singers voice was killing me.

Nothing remarkable here, although I can see where Australian band, The Grates, got their influence from

Not a huge fan of this one, not sure what it is but there's something about her voice that puts me off.

This music is made up of simplistic guitar playing, and a lot of yelling. The vocals kind of get annoying after a while. By times the vocalist does this kind of warble thing that is rather unpleasant to listen to. These gals are kinda similar to The Slits, or X-Ray Spex (punk/indie rock). It reminds me of an unpolished female led high school punk band. By times I found myself tapping my foot along to the beat, but the constant barrage of shouted lyrics takes it down a few notches. Favourite songs: Dig Me Out Least favourite songs: Words and Guitar, Buy Her Candy 2/5

неинтересная музыка и неинтересный вокал. может можно привыкнуть и раскроется, но не зацепило

Zeer matig rock album voelde het totaal niet

Not too bad except I can’t get behind the banshee wailing. Jenny is a decent song, but throw Michael Stipe’s voice on it and it would fit right in on REM’s Monster.

I enjoyed the music, but all the songs sounded the same.

As somebody who has never fucked a kid, I find this record hard to relate to. It's a black rainbow of doom arching over a gang rape of a young seagull. I haven't slept for weeks after listening to this utter shit. Eat a dick. Nigel Spackman. I'M NIGEL SPACKMAN! WHO AM I?

It was okay. Songs sound similar

Yet another average indierock album, and a Singer that gives me a headache..

This album is perfect if you feel like listening to a woman yelling in a fan.

Siouxsie and the Banshees 20 years later but it's all the same song and American.

Not a big fan of this one, but definitely heard worse.

Not a fan
