Reviews (page 7 of 7)
It's underwhelming. Somehow lacks energy even though she screams for the whole duration
Not a fan.
I did not like this. It was too shrill. Thing is, it should be up my street. I’ve heard so much about Sleater-Kinney over the years in relation to bands I’ve loved. This was a surprise to me.
Some noises I can stand....
I dig the punk feminist energy; I do not dig the incessant warbly vocals expressing that energy.
The singer's voice makes every song sound too similar. She's a cross between Natalie Merchant & Belinda Carlisle trying to sing a mix of punk rock. Not for me but I appreciate the music.
too centred on rock, not much else happening
I can see plenty of bands in the late 2000s that would say this album is a massive influence, especially The Grates. Average album in my opinion though.
It's like Nirvana, but Nirvana sound much better
I've been bad with my 1001 Albums project the last two weeks, so I'll keep this one short: This is girl rock at it's finest. Sleater-Kinney was famous when I was in HS. They were the darlings of college rock. Progressive. This album was merely okay, though.
A step above pure noise. Lyrics don't speak to me although some of the songs might be more enjoyable if they were being sung by someone that sounded like they were having some fun. I do like the guitars here and there but not the production. Best song: Words and Guitar. Yeah, listening to this once was more than enough, but I'm willing to grant this album does belong on the list. 2
I WANT to like these guys, but they just don't grab me.
90's rock song, okay
Background noise
This is full of energy, pop punk style stuff. Feels a bit short of edge and a little lightweight, plus the vocals are quite grating, there's not enough variety there. Still, a tight 35 minutes, we've had much worse albums. 2/5.
things you say is literally an anime song and that is prob why its the only track i actually like album is just so loud and I GET IT but its hard to look at it and be like hell yea i got my tea in my comfy seat and BOOM SOUND AND DISSONANCE some of the guitar work on some of the songs are really good. HOWEVER the vocals have this weird vibrato that i cannot get over. i do not like it 2/5
This album could’ve been really good for me if the vocals did not have an EXCESSIVE amount of vibrato/just shakiness to them. I like to female vocals over hard rock/punk, but this killed it for me. Songs have good grooves though. 4/10
Mikil vonbrigði.
Didn’t like the album. Vocals detract from the punk comp’s.
I got a headache
I hadn't even heard of this band before and I sort of liked it in a curiosity way but it didn't have any stand out tracks and I don't think I'd listen to it again
4/10 just averagely punked
I'm not a fan, it all sounds a bit one-note and not drawing me in at all. I'm not liking the vocals, lots of shrieking and it's just too much.
The "Girl Punk" band Sleater-Kinney. Genre: Punk Rock Reminds me of the old punk-rock Go-Go's before they became a pop band. Singles: ------------------------------- One More Hour Little Babies Overall, I think it has a good sound. I think I'd enjoy it more after I've heard it a few more times. Rating: 2.5+
Mercifully short at 37 minutes long. I was hopeful that I’d be into this band but I just found listening to this album a chore.
Good driving music but not really my style/genre
Nah, didn't really do it for me
An absolutely okay listen. Some decent hooks here and there; political message I’m greatly sympathetic to and really good production. And yet, this album quickly became background. The sentiments of the Riot Grrl movement, while of incredible social importance, lose a lot of their edge in favour of lyrical tropes. Yes, their preoccupation with women’s empowerment was vital, but I guess there’s only so many ways you can articulate that without recurring to extremely ham-fisted preaching. Similarly, (I think) Corrin Tucker’s voice sounded totally incongruous on this record. For a genre which advocated sincerity and conviction, her sanitised warbling conveyed anything but that. Overall, a decent record which has aged well in some respects, and poorly in others.
I like their energy but after awhile the vocals became quite shouty and annoying. Someone else here mentioned quite aptly that its like your girlfriend yelling at you for an hour. After this album was finished, Spotify continued to play similar riot grrl style music by the Breeders and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and I must say that I enjoyed them much more.
I would probably quite enjoy seeing them live, however would immediately forget them and any songs on the walk home.
Those monotone vocals suck what little energy this album has out of it. It's especially annoying when they talk over each other. It was too poppy and childish most of the time. Plus, I wouldn't give any riot grrrl anything more than a 2 on principle.
Ikkje spesielt bra
Ikkje nåke for meg
Not much for me to enjoy here, I couldn’t really get past the bleating vocals. Sounded a lot like Patti Smith to me but 20 years late, what’s the point?
p805. 1997. 2 stars. Average white girl punk band with nothing to add to what The Runaways and The Go-Gos have done before. In fact it sounds like the Go-Gos. Well done of its kind but not essential listening. Why is this on the list?
I don't get this at all. Must be influential or something. Kat described it perfectly, the go go's with screaming.
Good guitars and drums but not keen on the singing.
Not bad per se... but sounds like any run of the mill rock band you'd hear down your local music venue
A few interesting songs but nothing particularly great.
I’ll take more dark/grunge sound (Jenny) and less shrill/punk sound (Words and Guitar). 2.75.
Nije mi sjeo album nažalost. Većinski mi je bilo iritantno ga slusat.
3 1/2
textbook 2
I was pretty excited to get this album as I've been meaning to check out Sleater-Kinney....but I hated it haha
Wasn’t great, wasn’t terrible. I understand the influence they had, but I felt like it was the same song, with the same dissonance and muddled vocals, track after track.
Decent
It is a punk rock album. I don't really care for punk rock. I don't see myself listening to this album again.
I find this album a bit boring. It may be important politically, but from musical point of view it is very standard.
Their influences are clear but there is a lack of identity. For the most part this is just messy but fleetingly there is a glimmer of cohesion.
Don't like at all, very whiny.
I really wasn't a huge fan, taste is subjective I suppose. I found some of the guitar work interesting, but to me it felt like a throwback to 70's punk, which is cool, but the band really didn't seem to bring anything new to the table. Singer is always yelling, even on quiet songs, which became irritating.
Sleater-Kinney? I hardly know her-Kinney!
pas fan
Not really my jam, at all.
Tror aldrig jeg kommer helt op at køre over det her.
udmærket punk
90’er punk rock, politisk, energisk
Pretty bad, yeah. I think thats it. 2 or a 3.
Real simple and just ok
My god, Carrie Brownstein's frail and shaky voice is so incredibly annoying it ruins this record for me. It's such a shame, as the guitar work is stellar, but I really would never consider listening to this again. 2/5.
i very much disliked this album. the singing was just horrible and not good to listen to. however, the music was good so if it hadn’t had that god awful singing i would probably have enjoyed it.
I like the idea of this record...but I don't like this record. Trying to objectively figure out why... I think it's two-fold: the mix is too low-fi/"indie" for me (at times it sounds like it was recorded in a bedroom which...hey, personal taste, but it sounds cheap especially with the drums). But mainly it's that the main singer (the one singing in the higher register) is abrasive as hell and just gets worse within each song and as the album goes on. There are a handful of songs where I found myself starting to bop my head (e.g. "Turn It On") and then the vocals just move more and more towards the same damn timbre and limited frantic-at-the-edge-of-a-shriek and it kills the vibe. It's like she works herself to this frenzy and gets to the peak note and just stays there the rest of the song. That being said, I can see why people would like this and I imagine Sleater-Kinney being a fun live band; pretty sure I would enjoy a solid hour long set in a club. Big points for the aggression fueled melodic content - and there's enough musical variety and talent to make it quite interesting - but the vocals and that 90s DIY sound make this album a miss for me. 4/10 2 stars.
Stop yelling at me please.
Bäst: "Dig Me Out"
Forgettable late 90's alt-rock.
2/5
good drums
This album is a long string of similar sounding songs with OK music and the singer’s voice annoys me. I do enjoy the two guitar, no bass setup. Little Babies is my favorite song on the album, partly attributed to it having a high proportion where both singers are singing together. I just can’t get over the voice.
Not that great. She had a good energy, but all of the songs sounded the same. I grew tired of it After the first track.
Not my vibe, but it doesn't sound bad. 2/5 stars.
Very ehh Forgettable Two good tracks, that is it Final Thoughts: 2/5
Not for me
I don't like rock
Hard work, jarring angular chords
Interesting vocals... but really didn’t like this one
I like the genre, but too grating for me. I'm not even sure why.
I have a mildy interesting theory that every vocalist has a note they naturally sing over a given chord. A default pitch. Something to do with they way they hear music. It's the same with lead guitarists who often begin solos on the same note. The vocalist for Sleater Kinney takes it to the next level and sings the same note, at the same volume, at the beginning, middle, and entirety of every song. There doesn't seem to be any consideration for melody or dynamics or the music the rest of the band is creating. I'm pretty sure she only sings 2 or 3 different notes on the album. No dynamics. Just full throated and quivering every time. It's too bad because the guitars are really interesting and angular and melodic at times. See "Bring Her Candy" for the clearest example of the only 2 note vocals over interesting guitars. Break free from your default pitch. Give some new notes a try. At this point I should also do a self check for mysogyny and musical conditioning. If the vocalist were male would I find it less irritating? Would it sound like Sonic Youth? In the words of Shaquile O'Neil: "WE'LL NEVER KNOW". C
Despite Carrie Brownstein being in this group, I was actually not a huge fan of this album. I don't think I liked the main singe, not sure if that was Carrie but her voice rattled as she sang and it didn't sound good to me. The music was fine and some of the chorus' were catch but then that rattley voice would come back and I'd skip the song. Glad to see a female rock/punk group!
As noted before, I’m not huge into 90s alternative rock. This was no exception to that. The vocals were grating and some songs it honestly sounded like the guitarist barely knew how to play. Not my favorite Favorite track: “Jenny”
I don't know what I'm supposed to get out of this. They've got some nice sounds at times, but it's droning and repetitive and I just don't especially enjoy it.
Noisy thrash guitar.
could not listen to much. the lead vocalist's voice is just weird and is not enjoyable to listen to.
Ok
Lots of strong points in this album but the vocal assault ruins all of it. Wanted to turn it off halfway through the first song.
More screaming than singing. Did not enjoy. ⭐
When it starts out, I feel like its ok but just not really my thing. But as it goes on, their voices just grate on me. And they keep talking over each other so I don't know what either one is saying. Best song: Buy Her Candy
This must be the DEI portion of the list
Now what can I say about this? Basically this is what I expected The Slits to be, and to be honest, I expected these to be like what we got from The Slits. So, ok then how do I some this up? It was crap, no redeeming features.
the singer sounds awful
I cannot stand the vocals "Jenny" was good though
I'm sorry, I'm old. The distortion gives me a headache.
Insoportable la voz de la cantante
All of these angsty, early punk rock bands are really taking a toll on me. It could've gone one of two ways, either I appreciate it more or I hate it more and unfortunately (fortunately?) it is the latter. The vocals on this are terribly painful.
I've heard the name Sleater-Kinney - but have never heard anything by them. After listening to this 3 times... * most of this was not memorable and the shrill, shrieking, atonal voice(s?) were really pretty annoying most of the time * I think the lack of bass and any other instrumentation contributes to making this all not very interesting musically. Although I believe the White Stripes do a similar super stripped down sound with just one guitar and drums - but they make it sound so much more interesting and enjoyable. There were a couple of songs that I thought might grow on me but after repeated listening - nope they just got more annoying. After doing this album a day thing, I feel like there is probably a line to be drawn from Patti Smith (70s) to Sleater-Kinney (90s) to Yeah Yeah Yeahs (00s) - but not totally sure. Also - props to them for mimicking a Kinks album cover - because I love the Kinks - but these guys not so much. I went back and looked at what else I like that came out in 1997 and there were so many other albums that were SO much better and SO much more interesting and enjoyable than this album - such as: * Radiohead-OK Computer * Spiritualized-Ladies and gentlemen we are floating in space * Yo La Tengo-I Can Hear The Heart Beating As One * Chemical Brothers-Dig Your Own Hole * Modest Mouse-Lonesome Crowded West I'm glad this was only 36 minutes long. There is nothing on this album that I'd want to hear again. Liked songs on Spotify: 0/13 Rating: 1/5 (should be Zero)
The singing on this was so grating. This style of vocals is just not for me. The instrumentation was fine, I guess, but it wasn't enough to cancel out the bad singing. If anything, its averageness made the singing all the more apparently worse. Favorite Track: Dance Song '97
Sux
Screaming with that vibrato and a shrill voice was rough. I had a hard time making it to the end.
A three who don't fill out the sound, that or the producer didn't know how to dial the drums down. One of the greatest albums of all time? Well it's nowhere near and instantly forgetable
Terrible.
Awful noise.
not my thing
Was so hard to finish
schwach! irgendwelche queers, die handwerklich schlechte Experiemente machen
Stop shouting!
3/10 - Punk rock, not my thing
listened to the first song in the shower and it annoyed me so i turned it off lol
Hot stinky dog turd of an album. 1/10
it was okay, i really only liked Dig Me Out. the rest got a little on my nerves
Again annoying vocals and the instrumentals made me feel nervous at points.
Punk. Didn't get thru it.
Not an fan. Marks for a consistent and cohesive sound. 1.25 /5
Abbruch
This was not my thing at all and the lead vocalist's voice was really annoying.
One of the worst music listening experiences of my life. Like battery acid in my ears.
nah
Fuck off.
I wanted more variation in vocal lines. The punky music was fine, maybe even a little enjoyable but I ended up wanting to skip towards the end because it felt like the same some. More anger would have made it better I think
Early 90s rap was different, not a fan of this album
Cacophonous. Some songs sounded off key. Shocked this album was on the list.
Just no. This was a waste a 36 minutes. The screeching hurt my ears.
I could not get into this album at all. The vocalist's voice sounded like nails on a chalkboard for me.
Lärm!
The definition of ‘noise’. Girl cannot hold a note. A nooOOottTTTTteeeeEeEeE
I just don't like their voices and find them grating
Vocalist is really annoying. Nothing was hooking me in. Very bland. Maybe it's their style but I fucking hate it
Not for me. 1/5
Had to speed listen, again. Have never heard Sleater-Kinney before and hope to never again; Alternative music is not in my wheelhouse; gives me a headache.
This is what putting a CAT in a dryer sounds like. HOW TF is this on any MUST HEAR list????
Olen pahoillani mutta tämä on paskaa. semmoseen genreen päättivät tyttelit uppoutua jossa maksimi on se kaksi kautta viisi. tämän lisäksi pysyttiin siinä kliseiden ja geneerisyyden raiteilla eikä edes vilkuteltu kahdella pyörällä samalla kun kolikeita tulee toiseen käteen. istutaan vaan sisällä ja pohditaan. + lammas laulanta klassikko naistoimintaa taas kerran.. en pahemmin löydä mitään hyvää tästä ja haluanko?? haluanko etsiä.. haluanko svedu vastarannalla reisiin asti mölviä mudassa ja paskassa toisen kerran päivässä? luulen että en halua.. the schism betewen et taju viela project and 90's american rock music is hullun hulvaton but also seriously fucked up.. dig me out
Annoying punk replica
No va
Dig me out and bury me 6ft because her voice killed me.
Gross
Lot of yelling, musically not my taste
The vocals took a full star away
WORDS AND GUITAR AAaaaAAoooAAAOOooAA
Angry punk girls. Vocals too quivery and not very musical - lots of yelling. Almost borderline tolerable. A healthy portion of fuzz, so there's that.
Not a fan of this album but mad respect
Now I have a headache.
Never heard of this beat combo so wondering if they never made any impact here in UK. I Paused here whilst I consulted the internet for any major UK references. Not much at all apart from reading Half Man Half Biscuit name checked them in a song of theirs. So that’s an interesting fact and probably the best thing I can say about this album. I’ve heard the likes of this album so many times done by artists a lot more musically competent. 1/5 3/12/24
Painful.
Neh
not my cup of tea unfortunately :/
First all girl band album to make the list? Probably the only reason why too. I did not dig this. The lead's voice was super annoying and the instrumentals were amateur at best. Very skippable album from a music standpoint but maybe had an impact on young, female, aspiring rockers. Glad it was a quick one...let's press on...1.3.
I don't know why I'd have to listen to this album at all. There is nothing special about it.
Pat Benatar type music, but the songs aren't as good.
Really annoying whining
Muss man mögen. Zu viel Geschrei. Politisch sicher wertvoll.
Not for me
Is there a less than 1 option
Women whining is not my genre
these vocals are like obnoxiously bad, turn it off
Definitely one of the worst albums ever
Not a fan of her voice
This album is not for me. The sounds of the album are dissonant in an intentional way and I can recognize that. Punk has that way of making you a little uncomfortable and forcing you to sit with it. But, you don't get much relief from the vocals. No matter who takes the lead singing duties, the results are never particularly pleasant on the ears. Though it doesn't fully resonate with me, I can appreciate the energy that comes through and there are some catchy earworms underneath the chaos. "Little Babies" is my favorite ditty of the bunch.
Not my music at all.
First song sounds like a goat being choked. Or maybe a chicken being choked. Oh, that's just the way the lead singer sounds. I can't listen to an entire album of this.
I really don't like when all songs on an album sound the same to me. I get that this band is going for a certain sound -- lots of electric guitar and scream-singing from the vocalists -- but it's just that I don't care for the sound itself.
Yuck
Never liked this band
I really really wanted to like it I just didn't like her singing:(
Lost me in the first 10 seconds and never got me back. Dischordant, jerky guitar and shouty vocals with tune I can remember. Really not pleasant to listen to at all.
Not really much audibly diverse on this one, rough sounding
Don´t like this music.
Flink zijk album, niet helemaal voor mij
feels like satire
musical dumpster fire jenny
Punk has been one of the genres I've had a more difficult time enjoying throughout this project, and this is no exception. I like the energy of the instruments, but the singer's constant shrill vibrato is grating. Makes it a hard listen.
No no no, absolutely hate her vibrato. All the songs sound exactly the same. How did these guys get an album?
not for me
Meh
Rubbish
Utter tripe - how does this ever get into anyone’s top 1001. Shows how subjective this whole exercise is. Scraping the barrel.
I like good Punkrock, this is not. Terrible voice.
Untitled2 can sml by baiting me like that. I could not tell if he was being genuine or if he thought pointing out that I was listening to ANOTHER punk album sung by two lesbians would make me teehee like a hyena (I did not). For reference, I historically do not enjoy punk and untitled2 has falsely accused me on numerous occasions of dressing like a lesbian. Turns out he were a day behind and was actually referring to Trafalgar, which was sweet because I did really like that album. I have nothing to say about this one though, since all I heard was ear splitting wailing that really did not feel fervent or angsty, just pathetic. God that hurt to admit, because untitled2 is a misogynist and this just gives him more fuel to add to the fire.
This album made me a misogynist. I audibly laughed at some songs. There is such a thing as too much vibrato.
Wow. You know usually I love these random albums, kind of like one loves a puppy. It’s fun, it’s exciting, but every now and then it takes a shit on your carpet. This time, the shit was taken inside my ears and lasted 36 minutes too long. Her shaky voice made my skin crawl as I begged and pleaded with father time to make the album end already. Fuck. That. Shit.
Holy shit, it’s the chick from Portlandia! I never knew she was a “musician”. Also, I found a Sleater-Kinney song already in my library and it’s actually somewhat good, unlike this album. Maybe she should stick to acting…
The first album generated that i could not push past, I found the playing repetitive, the vocals absolutely terrible. No melodies. There are simply no redeeming qualities for this style of music.
What happens when you are too late to the grunge party, but decide to go for it, but throw in a little punk so that you don't get accused of being posers who missed the grunge party boat? One star: that's what.
First reaction was - what an uncoordinated mess. As this is their debut album I can only hope that they improved with time - well actually they would pretty much have to as getting worse is nigh on impossible and staying the same just highly unlikely. Post punk normally displays the same attitude as punk did, which this does, while demonstrating some degree of technical competence - which this does not. Individually they may have reasonable ability - but the concept of playing as a band seems to have escaped them entirely.
It's like listening to a screamin goat.
This one is bad.
not a fan of the voices. music is ok.
Ouch!! that just hurt my ears!
Power to them for being an influential chick band but to shrill for my likings
This album was difficult to get through. A prime example of how a bad singer can ruin an album. The instrumentals weren’t entirely that bad but it was hard to get past the rough voice. Wouldn’t not re-listen. 2.3/10
the Go-Gos evil twin.
Sounded like the Offspring but female and worse
Niet echt mijn ding, ongeinspireerd
didnt like it
Nope
Not for me. The vocals were hard to stomach, and the music was pretty blah.
It wasn't bad, but I didn't enjoy it very much. I think I would have enjoyed it in 1997 but it didn't do much for me now. A couple decent songs, but a lot of the songs sounded the same to me.
Bad
Wow, I hate it. It's just chaotic noise to me. Most of the singing was just annoying to me and really not much else than that. I soldiered through about half of the album and gave up after the sixth song.
Angry loud grungy without the redeeming qualities.
Not for me.
Lead singer reminded me a little of the Go go’s. Na it’s a hard pass.
Just laughably bad. Shreiking voice, mediocre playing. 2/10.
Awful. Really not something I enjoy listening to. The vocals just frustrated the hell out of me.
