Reviews (page 5 of 7)

It was fine, nothing really grabbed my attention much.

As someone who prefers female rock groups, somehow Sleater-Kinney slipped through my radar back in the 90’s. I only have heard The Center Won’t Hold, which I thought was fine. Still I was kind of hype because this was the 90’s, my favorite decade in rock… Yet I just didn’t really get into this album at all, and came away feeling meh on it. Probably like a 2.5 out of 5

I thought I wouldn't like this, but I enjoyed the warbling and the discord for the most part.

Feels like singer is just screaming all the time

# Album Name: Coat of many colours # Artist: Dolly Parton # Rating: 3/5 # Comments: Bang average. Just OK. # Top Tunes: No idea # Would I listen to it again? No

Think this more stands for Riot Grrrl bands than this album, it’s alright but not even my favourite Sleater-Kinney - none of the songs really stand out

Ok indie rock! hard and tough jams!

Good noise!

her voice is very indie

A little too screamy for me, but it definitely had some kind of appeal that I really can't put my finger on. 3.5 stars

cooler sound aber nothing outstanding to me leider

Favorite Track: Turn Me On

Good late 1990s punk-rock album, though the vocals weren't my favorite.

Pretty good

Ok don’t think I was in the right mood for this one so I’ll give it another listen on another day.

Good album. But not really my jam. The dissonant vocals with the intense vibrato on them were odd sounding to me.

The songs are pretty cool, although a little repetitive. I couldn't get passed the warbling. Sorry.

I found this an energetic romp through some garage rock, often peppered with nice guitar riffs. But ultimately much if it is all rather average - with no discernible reason this would ever be on the 1001 albums to listen to ahead of death. There were several real enjoyable standouts. It's plum in the middle threes.

Late riot grrrl. Some echoes of their voice in Sister Wives

Fine. A little monotonous

Listened Before? N Interesting. Noisy. Chicks. Those are the three words I have for this one. It was fine. Probably needs some more polish but that would probably ruin it. Maybe the perfect hipster album? Added to Library? N Songs added to playlist: Heart Factory

Nice, quick, energetic album.

My suspicion is that Sleater-Kinney would be amazing to see live. As a recording I only mildly enjoyed it. But I doubt I’ll return to this anytime soon. 3/5

pretty good, nice grungey sound

guitar-rock band.. Favorite track: jenny other picks: dig me out, turn it on, words and guitar

There's an interesting post punk/new wave blend to what I would consider straight indie rock. The singing is intense. The playing is firey. It feels like what sex-bobomb wanted to be. or what cloud nothings is embodying now. Really loud. Really in your face. Cool record.

I think this album would grow on me more if I listened again and again. First pass through it had a cool punk sound. I didn’t have particular tracks that really stood out to me but overall I enjoyed it. No complaints, not blown away. Might try it again down the road. 3

I feel like there are a lot of influences on this band and other artists they’ve influenced themselves, I just can’t put my finger on it. Great mix of rock, punk, and grunge. The lyrics are very topical for the era they came out in and are still relevant today. Overall, a solid album.

Feminine Indie. First 3/5 Again? 3/5

angry girls with guitars...kinda good tho

Decent guitar work. Very vibrato vocalist, to the point where it was sheep-like. 1997...at that point lots of other similar grunge albums out doing similar things, arguable w better writing so not sure why this one was on list compared to similar others from the era. Still liked it all things considered.

Not a fan of the vocals

Not offensive, a few decent songs. Largely uninspiring

I didn't feel much listening to this. Just a little bit too nosy to stay in the background.

Somehow missed the whole Riot grrrl thing. The vocals on a lot of these tracks are just a little too shrill for my taste but I love “Buy Her Candy” and “Things You Say” …

Crazy to think this is the lady from Portlandia. She rips!

I really like people who love Sleater-Kinney, but I’m not sure I love Sleater-Kinney. Maybe I need a few more listens.

Definitely worth a relisten. Quite a lot of samey sounding songs. Good find.

Not my style but good

Mid to high threes, a very good SK album

This was an enjoyable enough record of fizzy riot grrrl punk rock songs. Not a lot more to say about it.

OK punk album, easy to listen to

I went from enjoying this to not enjoying this multiple times during the album. I love the vibe of female punk vocals but at times also found it unpleasing to my ears.

Who? American Riot Grrrl (Underground Feminist Punk Rock) band from the 1990s. Unlike a lot of punk bands, this group can play. I guess it was cutting-edge in its day.

Nothing really here

I think I like "All Hands on the Bad One" more, but this is still good.

Would have been a 4 if the vocals were less shrieky

Excellent missed this first time around and well worth a listen

Good solid indie rock

Heard of them but never explored. I liked! 90’s punky girls. Great memories of being one.

Day314 - i’ve tried a few times over the years to get into sleater-kinney even though they haven’t clicked with me yet ill keep trying

Chunky, great listen and probably 3.5 stars but it's enjoyable but not earth shaking so 3 it is.

I liked it, but it's not something I could listen to an entire album regularly.

I'm all for riot girl, I just don't think this album is really enjoyable to listen to.

The vocals dig me under my imaginery grave

After the Woods....their beat

pretty decent, liked the singers voice

It's got words and guitar.

It’s fine. Better than a lot of the shit I’ve been subjected to lately.

just generic indie rock, wouldve fit in on the Garden State soundtrack or something like it. Just a little off-kilter and edgy enough to set it away from mainstream sound, but it kinda borders on annoying (Words and Guitar in particular), like being different for the sake of it.

I just don’t think I’m a big fan of this kind of indie rock. They’re all talented but it’s just not for me

Hated it at 1st, but it really grows on you. Pretty solid imo. Would've really been into this when it originally came out & probably would've rated it higher.

A couple good songs

Angsty Brit pop-vibes. Brit thing may just be the singer's vocal fry but that's the feel I get an I'm not gonna Wiki it to see if I'm right or not. 3.5

Fun not going on the playlist tho

Another alt album that’s just so so

Never fancied myself much of a riot grrrl so I'm not the target audience. I like the punky indie garage rock sound but the vocals were just too much after a few songs.

I have never heard of them before. I’d give them another listen for sure. Overall it was good. 3.5

Pretty nice sounding music however many songs have repetitive lyrics.

This band is okay. Nothing too spectacular from my perspective. The vocals were not that strong.

It’s okay. I mean the lyrics are solid, the instruments sound good, like the punk overall feel but I am not a fan of her voice. It’s just too much, can’t understand what she’s saying, it doesn’t really sound good, just very eh for me. That’s my only big complaint for this album. I also don’t really feel like it does anything particularly awesome that makes me go wow so I don’t really know why it’s on this list but you know I’ve said that a lot so it is what it is.

it was ok, a bit samey

Early S-K like angry, young Indigo Girls. Liked the energy and feminism angle, felt like they were singing out of their range on all songs except Little Babies (which is the best song on the album.) They get better (2.7*s)

Not familiar with Sleater Kinney but I liked what I heard. A handful of quick 2-3 minute pop punk songs with female vocals. By the end of the album it devolves a little and starts to get a little one-soundish, but it is a sound that works. Either way I give them credit for bringing something mostly unique and different to the table. One of my main takeaways was that I would like to see them live. I imagine they would put on a good show in a smaller venue. Solid entry. I'll likely check out more of S-K's stuff. 2.83 stars

I understand why this album is important. I understand why people dig it. It's just not for me and, as a white guy in his 40s, I'm pretty sure it's not meant to be.

I saw Sleater-Kinney twice this summer at festivals and they were fine. Same with this music. It's fine. A little better than average but nothing super amazing. However it is short which is always a plus. 3.5/5

I wanted to like it more than I actually do. Alas!

Surprisingly fun and well-made, but not something I imagine myself drifting towards.

Not sure how I felt about this. Enjoyed bits, didn't care for other bits. Maybe need to listen to more from them to really make my mind up.

Liked some, not others

Love the energy. Love love love the guitars. Sometimes okay with the vocals.

I'm pretty familiar with Carrie Brownstein via "Portlandia", but never took much time to dig into Sleater-Kinney. The lack of bass guitar on this record is really noticeable, making it sound a lot more raw, and leaves a lot of space. Brownstein's voice takes a minute to get used to, with a ton of vibrato, but the passion behind it wins out in the end. Not anything I'd personally revisit, but nothing I overall hated. The latter half of the record is much stronger than the first half. Favorite tracks: "Turn It On", "Dance Song 97", "Not What You Want"

Pretty decent, but a bit too grating for me. I know I know - this is just what punk sounds like. But that's why I don't really like most punk. Some decent guitar stuff and the vocals are sometimes ok sometimes too much. Not for me but I can see why people would like this.

So tempted to go with a 4 on this. It's great, and ends with a cracker, either high 3 or 4 but it needs me giving it more attention in future

Volume 683 of “I wish I liked this more”, but still really good. 3.5/5

Punk rock.

While I was excited by the idea of some strong punk women’s voices in this project, I found this to be pretty one note and grating without being able to hear any interesting lyrics.

I've heard of this band never listened to their stuff. I do know that an actress is in this band, forget her name. She was on SNL. Not my style. I dig the rockness.

Nondescript, can’t remember it other than it didn’t annoy me too much.

Great sounds and solid rocker when you're in the mood, but the songs weren't that interesting to me.

Thanks in part to Portlandia (and also growing up in Seattle, albeit before their rise to fame), I knew of the band as well as the near-Olympia interstate exit that their name came from, but I'd never really listened to them before this. I enjoyed the album more than I expected to, which was nice, especially "Dig me out", "One more hour", "Heart Factory", and "Little Babies". I also appreciated how compact a lot of the songs were, but I guess I question why this album seems to be labeled punk, given when they emerged. They kind of remind me of a different version of Mary's Danish (but more distortion and a more muddy mix and a little less variety in the lyrics). It didn't occur to me until reading the Wikipedia entry for the album that they didn't (don't?) have a bass player in their songs. I like it that it made for an interesting production puzzle, and that it him/them make the guitars even bigger-sounding, but for me it also explains why the album sounds a bit flat, dimensionally, or maybe just more tinny than I'd prefer (although that's also a function of the type of distortion they used).

High energy with raw lyrics, but lacking in earworms. It’s got everything I should like but for some reason, it just doesn’t grab me. It sounds like it should come from the late 80s like post punk stuff, but it’s 10 years later. It kind of reminds me of Sonic Youth.

Claire Fisher from Six Feet Under would love this!

Punk-rock femenino. Ni fu ni fa.

Punk rock.

Dig dug dead

Stripped back guitar noise. Nice, but not noticeable, grunge.

Good fun. I dig.

Later Skinny.

Exactly what I expected it to sound like

Musically, the instrumentation on “Dig Me Out” was slightly better than average. The production was raw, featuring a lot of distorted guitars that added to its gritty feel. As for the lyrics, they sounded like the musings of people half my age, full of angst and still trying to figure things out. While the album was a decent listen, it’s not something I would revisit.

listened to this one twice because I didn't like it all that much at first but it's good overall

There's a punky vibe that I liked & a couple of really nice tracks but I found her voice irritating at times. Worthy of another listen though & my 3 stars might be a tad harsh

Fun album Standout songs Words and Guitar Not What you Want Things you say

Huh that's who sleater spinney are

Good stuff

The warble wears me out.

One of the few proper punk bands still going strong. Sleater-Kinney are cool as fuck, I feel I need to be cooler to listen to them. I struggle a bit with the vibrato-style vocals, but that’s just my personal taste.

Pretty ok

Not something I'd seek out but very palletable

niet slecht... maar kon beter...twijfel tss 3 en 4 en bij twijfel steeds het minste nemen...

I’m in love with Corin Tucker’s voice - just the most expressive punk voice. I knew of Sleater-Kinney but had never listened until now. What’s in the water in Olympia, Washington? Same thing as in Athens, Georgia, methinks.

Punky fun

Good girl punk band, never heard of them before hits hard, but does get a bit samey, so don’t think I’ll rush back to it.

Best I can say about this is that it is only mildly irritating but thankfully short. Not even worth writing a scathing review about. So like all the albums on here I don't give a crap about it gets 3 stars.

I didn't really care for the vocals so much but the music itself was pretty alright.

Fun 90s punk album

Naikkos. hudattaa itteensä.. jaha..

an all women punk rock band?! i'm obsessed. these songs have so much punch and energy! these lyrics are of the kind that are created with a female perspective, which gives more prominence to sleater-kinney in sharp contrast to every other band in the nineties. it makes for a refreshing listen! and writing a song like "one more hour" for the break-up of the two leads? i love their boldness. i wasn't a big fan of the vocals, though they grew on me enough that i didn't mind them as much. i wouldn't call them grating or intolerable. the backing music, however, is so solid and amazing, the guitar work in particular and in every single song. that's what won me over, because that solo brash guitar sound opening the album? i loved it! 3.5

The 1990s alternative scene was overrun with men, so I can really appreciate the presence of another female 90s alternative act on this project, this time in the form of an indie punk type sound. As a result of the male domination, 90s female bands were steeped in feminism, and this album is no exception. Delicious! As someone who really likes 90s alternative music, I feel like my personal enjoyment of punk music is yet another thing that is increased as a result of it getting blended into the 90s soundscape. The guitar work here is KILLER. Also, the warbly vocals? That really does it for me when paired with this particular overall sound. Maybe I don't have the "ear" for punk music, but a lot of it sounds the same to me (and a lot of it sounds unlistenable to me); Sleater-Kinney finds a way to both stand out AND be listenable in the punk space. Sleater-Kinney is definitely known for being among the top female-led punk acts of all time, and hearing this album makes it obvious as to why. Great inclusion! (Also, Carrie Brownstein is fantastic in general.)

This one is okay. I like this band in theory, more than I do in reality. The singing is intentionally abrasive. It’s supposed to get a reaction from the listener. It’s probably super fun to blast and scream along with. But it can be a challenge to get into this. The music is pretty solid, though.

- vocals are definitely an acquired taste. i don’t think i’ve acquired the taste yet! - ‘not like an organ, like a valentine’ is a killer line to me - the guitar is just so insane and locked in - feel like i want to listen to this more to try and get it. i don’t really like it on first listen but i think i’d get used to the vocals and i’d be able to really soak in the lyrics - 3/5 because i like the lyrics

Pussy Riot OG

Another one that would probably get rated higher with some repeated listens. Earnest, punky.

Girl power rock, borderline punk. I think the power chords and yells hit some strides here and there. Like most punk, the screaming can get old and takes an acquired taste, the vibrato can get old. The music is well thought out and produced and mixed.

I liked this album. It has the energy of Yeah Yeah Yeahs, but is less poppy, more rock. Seems related to PJ Harvey in the feminist beat. I'm guessing if I listened to it a few more times it would bump up to a 4.

Perfectly average punk for me!

Wasn’t keen on all the warbling in some of the songs but an otherwise decent album. Jenny was a great track.

I wouldn't throw all the accolades they seem to have thrown at this band but it's pretty good. Energy, passion and integrity. I reckon they were pretty good in concert. A good album.

The start of an indie-rock titan and the genesis of their feisty garage rock sound (which later releases should have stuck with, if we’re being honest). While the tracks are very similar instrumentally, some strong songwriting and forceful vocal hooks give each track a unique identity while serving the album’s overall feel. Wish more of these upstart indie albums made it on here, the 2000-2020 additions seem biased towards rap and hip-hop while leaving out some indie heavy hitters.

Pretty solid effort here. Her voice got to me after awhile, but - otherwise - this has all the trappings of a 90s grunge/punk album. I dug it.

Decent 90s indie

Punk rock.

carino casino mega da ascoltare con oki a portata di mano

One can appreciate Corin Tucker's low-register guitar lines, but they fail to supplant what a bonafide bassist could bring to the mix. You're left with a light version of what should be a high-octane musical elixir.

Cool sound

one of the most 90s sounding female group albums. 3/5

Good Music and I like the band okay Just wouldn't listen to it because the vocals are screechy chalkboard to me. I can take a couple of songs, just not a whole album 3.5 stars, rounding down to 3

Decent

A 36 minutes mid 90’s album?there must be something wrong!! Energetic and entertaining but invariant. Actually feels quite longer than just 36 minutes.

An interesting listen but nothing stood out to me.

Sleater-Kinney is a tough one for me. The vocals are so shrieky that it's hard to look past. I realize that punk vocals are supposed to be a little rough, but S-K's often sound outright unpleasant to me. Theoretically, it's up my alley. Musically it's solid. I've just really got to be in the mood for their brand, and today, I can't say I was.

Their messy, bassless punk is fun, but their vocals are too affected for my taste. All-female punk band: into it more in principle than in practice. 3.2

A nice rock album and, once again for me, something new.

I’m starting to lose faith with this process. I mean, we get total unknown bands like this yet I still haven’t had any of the Boo Radleys Albums. 3.4

J'ai bien aimé le premier son, aprés j'ai pas eu trop le temps d'écouter le reste

I was not expecting to like this album as much as I did, especially after my first impressions. Candidly, I almost passed on the whole album after the first few seconds because of the singer. However, it slowly started to grow on me and I enjoyed most of the album. Except for Words and Guitars. That song was not good at all. It alone drops it to a 3 from a 4 in my book, whatever that’s worth ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Netter Punk-Rock

I don't think this is particularly inspiring music that I just had to listen to before I croak. It's rather simple and it's definitely repetitive. But given I'm a sucker for heavy guitar sound, I will give this album the benefit of doubt.

Late 90s grunge rock, some songs were better than others. But there were times I wanted to rate this lower because of the wailing vocals.

I like the opening track but the rest do begin to wear after a while.

Would have definitely liked it more if it wasn’t for the goaty vocals… [0107/1001]

Pretty good

Some good female punkish rock.

2.5 maar kon hier lekker op opruimen. Voor de rest niet heel bijzonder

Kinda like paramore

Sounds like angsty girl pop. Not my fave but not really bad

Nice lyrics with great energy, but an inconsistent tracklist with few ACTUAL highs. Many good songs tho

I actually like the singer. Wikipedia says people either love or hate her voice. On the other hand, the band sounds like the first time they played was when they recorded this album.

It sounded like it should be on Scott Pilgrim. Pretty good, but a whole album was a bit much at once.

A bit whatever really

Really enjoyed the first track. The rest of it kind of became shouty noise

Female punk with an energetic sound. The music is upbeat and inspiring. Would listen again.

When Alanis Morrissette spent a week listening to PJ Harvey's first 3 albums, then called in her mates to bash out some rock music.

90s garbage alt. Some ok lots of not great. Lost lyrics. 60%

Classic rock closer to punk a bit. Pretty cool. I like the singing! The guitar sound is quite muky. I'm not a big fan of the mixing. Overall a pleasant experience but not my thing even though I love rock.

I feel like I would normally give something with this sound a 4 but it’s just missing something. There’s talent and emotion but the energy kind of stays at the same level and desensitized me a bit. My favorite part was when they slowed it down for Not What You Want. Love Portlandia though.

Liked the first few songs but the album began to get repetitive. I think that tends to happen with this genre. Dig the all women line up though.

This is fine, post-punk, indie garage rock. I'm a little surprised by all of the critical acclaim this band gets. Maybe I need to listen a few more times to say I really like it? Very interesting to have a power trio without a bass guitar, so that's a plus for me.

OK rock. Vocals started to be annoying though at points.

Decent

This was pretty alright. Great guitar sound. 7/10 but 3 stars because the singing gets grating by the end.

this tribute to jello biafra is acceptable.

I think I'd enjoy it more live.

Not as rough as expected, but fast vibrato. Probably better in context. 3.

Initial Thoughts: Oh! All girl rock band from the 90's? Sign me up! Final Thoughts: Sick. Very garage band energy, where the vibe is very raw. Some nice blends of rock and punk. That being said, not all the songs here were bangers. But when they hit, they hit.

One More Hour and Heart Factory are the only good songs. A few other okay songs. Alfa drums.

Enjoyable indie rock 3.5

some good songs. but nothing special.

Som honesto, vocal interessante. Audição única sem render empolgação para escutar mais.

Not my style, but worth a listen once.

Favorite was "Little Babies".

This is okay but I was really hoping for hooks. Every song I'm waiting for the hook. And by the end, there were none.

This kind of thing wasn't really my jam back in the day but I enjoyed this one more than I expected to

Decent album but nothing special

I don't know what to make of this. On the one hand I was really impressed with the guitar interplay between Carrie and Corin, the riffs are really exciting and there's a real urgency that jumps at you right from the start and it just doesn't let go. I'm writing this and it makes me want to come back to it, but I must admit that I got exhausted by Corin's (or is it Carrie's?) vibrato voice toward the end. I guess that makes it a real punk rock record.

Very cool indie/punk album from the 90s. Very nice guitar works on this. Powerful songs! A true 3.5.

Decent. Good energy. Too bad Carrie Brownstein's voice is so annoying. Don't need that much tremolo.

Shouty US fem punk rock. Strong in most areas TBH. It's just not my thing so find it hard to judge/compare. Washes over me.

good nineties music

Its not terrible, but the vocals can be a bit grating at times. Torn between 3 or 4 stars. Would give 3.5 if I could

Female punk. Short. Fine.

Dig Me Out is the third album by the American rock band Sleater-Kinney. An all-female band created as a rebellion against gender roles and the rock industry's male-dominated hierarchy. This punk rock album was critically acclaimed and is considered the band's breakthrough record. It has a heavier sound than their previous album and this may be a result of the new drummer - Janet Weiss - who would become the band's longest-serving drummer. The vocal interplay between Corin Tucker and Carrie Brownstein was amazing and has been praised by many. This was an awesome album! It was rockin', but also had moments of beauty where I was just enthralled by the noise the band was able to produce through their instrument and voices. I'm surprised I have never heard of this band before.

I enjoyed it. Didn't love it, but just the perfect 90s riot grrrl adjacent punk album

Strong start to the album, and ending, but the middle dragged on for me. Hella amazing punk rock / riot grrrrl energy, beautifully dark closing track, but I really have some problems with how the album was mixed, maybe that's just me. 3.5/5

Pleasant surprise, never even heard of this band.

I enjoyed the album, haven't listened to a full Riot Grrrl album before, and I feel like this album had to have been a defining part of that movement.

I've always wanted to listen to this band, but never could bring myself to actually do it. I wasn't blown away, but I also didn't hate it. If I had heard this maybe 30 years ago, I might have been more into it.

It's a good album with a cool vibe but sounded very much like the Grates in parts and I would rather listen to them.

A bit too raucous for my tastes but this album had its moments

Wasn't wowed by this, but I might have to give it a closer listen at some point.

Sleater-Kinney is from Washington, USA Genre: Punk rock, blues rock Singles: --------------------------------------------- One More Hour (#153 UK) Little Babies (#147 UK) I like the guitars a lot, but the singing not so much! Borderline annoying voice. Standouts: Little Babies, One More Hour. Rating: 3/5

Carrie Brownstein is funny. I like the Kinks album cover. Philosophically I like this (I think). Sonically it’s alright. Some of these reviews are pretty sexist.

The songs are well-crafted, they are skilled musicians, and I like the lyrics. I just found it difficult to listen to more than a couple of these tracks at a time.

Would like more without the jello biafra warble of the singer every time

Favorite song: “Turn It On”.

I really fell for Sleater-Kinney with the One Beat album. I didn't know what it was about, I only knew that a girl I liked liked it, so I listened and then found a bunch of songs grappling with 9/11 and it just had me, all the way. Still love every song on that one. That said, I think the vocals are an acquired taste with SK and if you can acquire that taste, you're good as gold. But if you can't, it's just never gonna work out for you two. I like the vocals, but this one still doesn't hold me in thrall like One Beat. Still, it's a welcome bunch of songs that I might like more if I listened a few more times.

Enjoyed

Great instrumentals, but her voice gets a little repetitive/grating.

Genres: Punk rock Formed: Olympia, Washington in 1994 Run time: 13 songs, 36 min 34 sec 36 minutes is a short album. I enjoyed the album. It was well written with excellent musicianship. It’s on the list of 1001 albums to listen to before you die. If it came out 20 years earlier, it would be considered revolutionary. While it is a good album, and the group are talented, I wouldn’t personally have included it on this list, but then again most of the albums on the list aren’t that revolutionary or trailblazing. I will probably listen to this and other Sleater-Kinney albums again. My Rating: ***

This is good—I recognize some influences here.

Assertive, energetic sound that rocks hard, but loses steam a little in the middle. I have a limited tolerance for the vocals. Fave Songs: One More Hour, Dance Song '97, Dig Me Out, Not What You Want, Turn It On

Okay for what it is.

Riot grrrls

Me gustó, pero escuchándolo en el 2023 no hay nada que me llame la atención o que lo distinga de otros albums indie

Nothing very original, but the energy and female vocals give this punk some life that I did enjoy. Would enjoy this live for sure.

Enjoyable although at times a bit too screamy punk rock

Really not into it but I’m also u willing to give a bad rating to the feminist punk gals

I really want to like this album, but I really don't jive with Corin Tucker's vocals.

I really like the instrumentals. I wish the vocals had more power behind it, a bit too whiny for my liking

i enjoy later sleater-kinney, but tbh a lot of these songs were a bit overwhelming. i like punk, but i need songs to like.... take a break sometimes. hearing the same guitar do the same thing for an entire song is a little tiring. later sleater-kinney does that and i appreciate it anyways hell yea pnw riot grrrl

I wasn't overwhelmed with the sound.

Punk rock, kinda enjoyed it. Her voice was tough to get used too

Raw, rocky, lively, I liked it. Rating: 3.5/5 Playlist track: Little Babies Date listened: 10/01/23

Yes. She was better on Portlandia, but this wasn't horrible either. Maybe it's the fact that I'm used to women yelling in my ear or maybe it's the intense feelings of self hatred contained within me, but the raging hemorrhoidal lady in my ear was kinda comforting as I sat at work trying to not fall asleep. Dig me out was good. 2.5/5

En mode punk hivernal

Honest clean fun. My (perhaps uninformed) pov on the Riot Grrl movement is that they were largely uninterested in what anyone else thought about them – their concern was what they thought about themselves. Which is cool.

One time album, nice punk music…

A very focused emo/punk album that leaves you wanting to start a fight. As a listening experience, it is definitely unique

It was alright. The songs were upbeat and sounded good, but I just really wasn’t a fan of the lead singer’s voice. Her voice just seemed grating to me.

3.5 stars. Enjoyed the instruments, especially the guitar. But the vocals were a bit grating at times.

I think if I came across this band playing this set live, I would be ecstatic. Really interesting and at times compelling use of two guitars (downtuned) & drums without bass. Some welcome variation in styles and textures - songs like "Buy her candy", "Things you say" and the awesome closer "Jenny" (among others) particularly catching my ear. The B52-esque "Dance Song 97" also appeals. However, applying my "would I come back to listen to this album again" criteria, it's not quite hitting my 4 star threshhold...just a bit more punk angst and angularity across (most of) the set than I'm ever in the mood for. I am, however, looking forward to exploring more of the band's work - a quick look at some recent videos suggests they've evolved in really interesting ways. 3.5 stars for this one.

There’s a lot of this I loved - the opening (title) track is great & sets the tone, although I found some of the rest just a bit repetitive. I liked Turn It On & Words & Guitar, but my favourites were the very poppy Little Babies and Dance Song 97, which I thought was outstanding. A good listen.

I'm not an indie rock person unfortunately. Cool songs just not my thing really. Bonus points for lesbiabs :)

Dig Me Out - 3.1/5 One More Hour - 2.1/5

Liked it. Not very special album tho

The vocals were a bit too whiny for my liking

Listen

Enjoyable

Love the music, don't like the vocals

If I had to compare them to the far more commercially successful Pac NW band Hole, I'd take Sleater K any day. They have a good energy level and attitude.

The first 2 tracks are catchy. I especially like the second one with it's guitar lick and background vocals. In fact there are good guitar riffs throughout, the intros to some of the songs are Gang-of-4ish and at times the vocal interplay reminds me of the B52s. The lead singer can be screechy. It would have been an epic 1976 release.

Nice melodic grunge. 6/10

Pretty good. I’d never heard of them before, but they have that sound that I was sure I had heard before. Definitely will listen again.

Struggled to really enjoy this one and I'm not sure why. It's got energy but somehow felt like a slog to get through despite being 26 minutes long. Dance Song '97 was my favourite, I guess it stood out from the punkier, scuzzier tracks. Jenny is nice and moody too actually. There is some good stuff here, so I'll round up from 2.5.

So so riotgrrl punky rock. Interestingly the vocals sometimes sounded like Patti Smith. Not enough to keep my interest, sadly, but not terrible. A low 3.

C'est pas pire, c'est rock quand même et la chanteuse se donne. Certaines chanson mon accrochées mais en bout de ligne. ce n'est pas vraiment pour moi. C'est pour une autre époque. 3.

Top punk album, erg vergelijkbaar met bikini kill

Some decent songs but a bit repetitive and occasionally screechy.

6/10. Sleater, Kinney.

Listening to this, I thought, I get tones of Luscious Jackson. When the album finished, Spotify continued into Naked Eye.

I'm also listening to the Rolling Stone top 40 punk albums of all time. This one is number 14 which means it's better than Dookie, Milo Goes to College, 13 Songs, and Enema of the State (spoiler: it's not). I like this fair enough. I really like the instrumentation but I'm not in love with the vocals.

Not really my style of music. I might like it more if they put a bird on it.

Decent but wears a bit thin after about 4/5 songs.

Lead singer's voice is annoying but appreciate their motivation, and sound is ok.

I really enjoyed this - having recently been listening to their "The Center Won't Hold" album and wondering where all the thrashy guitars and waily vocals went, this was an interesting comparison - I just can't believe I missed this the first time around.

Great guitar work in this album. Kind of got into it 3.5/5

I like bits of it but I don't love the overall thing

Fun energetic record. Some interesting moments and definitely some bops, the vocals do grate on a few tracks though. High 3/Low 4

solid punk

i had not heard of this band before but i seem to be getting a sequennce of 90s Indie famale led rock. Some of the tracks are a little manic/ punky and repetitive for me but overall i liked the sound and the vibe, and would go back for more.

I like it. My favorites are heart factory, buy her candy and jenny

Hey, what are you listening to? Feminist punk, I guess. Whoa? How does that sound? Uhm... punk.

This would have been a 4, easily. But the constant vibrato on the vocals killed me.

Didn’t have the time to listen properly to every track but I enjoyed what I heard which surprised me. 3*

This is ok… very of its time! Struggled slightly with the vibrato on the vocal… but overall average.

Grrrl punk is a genre I wish to know more about, this was a fine introduction although at times I found her voice a bit wobbly

3.5 - very cool

What if pixies let Kim sing more??…

see I can tell what sort of “sound” this music is supposed to be but I don’t like it. her voice was jarring and the songs were almost monotone. instrumentally songs were strong like “It’s Enough” I had just had enough of her voice. 2.9🙂

bit samey but a good racket. And never heard em before which is always nice. 3

Not really my bag, but didn't dislike it. Singer sounded like Grace Slick and Pat Bennatar had a baby.

Better the second listen around.

Another chick punk band. Can’t argue with the aesthetic, love the retro touches/Danelectros. But this vocalist is grating my last nerve. She’s too glissando. Clean it up a bit and call me back. And in doing so, rob Sleater-Kinney of everything that makes them unique. Maybe don’t do that just to impress one “fan”. Keep rocking, ladies, you’re doing just fine. I’ll be over by the bar, sulking.

The band rocks but I don’t love the vocals. An interesting voice that I can only handle a little bit of at a time. I liked the last song “Jenny” though.

Sax on track 7 makes it. Shows why bass is needed in Punk. Overall pretty good, right for it's idiom.
