Reviews (page 6 of 13)
8 Truly one of the greatest power groups ever for me
8.5
Terrific tunes. I wish I could have witnesses the 60s first hand.
Another good record, a pleasure to listen to although the title track got a little bit on my nerves (not a fan of tracks which have a bit of a beach boys like approach to singing). Well polished and great songwriting I think.
nice calm vibes
4 a mani basss
Awesome album. 4 out of 5
A classic.
folk with a snarl
As of today, I'm officially 50 days into this thing. While I'm less than 5% of the way through the full list, this feels like my first significant milestone – the last time I attempted to make it through chronologically, I only got about 30-40 albums deep (right around the time the Beatles started showing up) before I called it quits. Needless to say, I've enjoyed my experience infinitely more this time around, even if listening to the albums in random order has resulted in some annoying instances of jumping into a particular artist's discography at a weird point. While part of me was hoping that the big 5-0 would be something more sentimental to me or one of the top 20 rated albums globally, I suppose it's fitting that such a milestone is accompanied by an artist I couldn't have named one song from (as that has been my experience for most of this challenge so far), with an album that I actually found to be pretty enjoyable. My first thought upon seeing that today's album was going to be Déjà Vu by Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young (featuring Dallas Taylor & Greg Reeves) was "wow, that's a lot of names." The volume of musicians present here is reflected in the music, which often features quartet-style singing and layered instrumentation. The boys also switch off on writing/vocal duties frequently, with each member of CSNY doing writing and lead vocals at least once on each side of the LP. While it might seem jarring on the surface, I personally love how effortlessly Déjà Vu jumps between folk, country and rock & roll – the variety on show almost gives it a compilation-like vibe, while still managing to keep things tight and cohesive. Other reviews have called it a perfect inflection point between the '60s and '70s, which I think is a completely fair assessment – it was quite cool hearing hippie music that features tempo changes and straight-up guitar solos (an element of rock which hadn't quite reached its peak just yet), such as on the opening track "Carry On." This certainly isn't my favorite kind of music to listen to casually, but I spun Déjà Vu twice in a row and started to let it play through a third time before I decided to cut myself off and get started with my work day. It's a pretty good album and deserves at least a four star rating, even if it's not something I can see myself coming back to super frequently! Highlights: Carry On, Almost Cut My Hair, Helpless, Woodstock, Déjà Vu, Country Girl
- it's listed as rock but it sounds very country to me (but maybe that's because it came out in 1970) Likes: - Helpless may be one of the saddest songs ever
Nice vibe for a Tuesday morn.
Great album. I realized on this listen that CSNY doesn't know how to finish a song! 3/4 of the tracks here end in fade outs
Classic. Brings back a lot of good memories. Just good music.
Nice easy listen with some good hits in there
Obviously it's a classic. Each member gets to show off a bit, and they're even greater together.
I was nervous about this because a friend also doing this challenge complained about getting these guys all the time and clearly hated them. But actually, I thought the songwriting was really interesting, great construction and a bunch added to my playlist. Nice surprise
I saw Dr. Dog and Clap Your Hands Say Yeah at the end of a tour in early 2000s. To close this last show together, both bands came out and covered "Helpless." I still get chills.
Enjoyed this much more than I thought I would, harmonies galore, lovely. Apprehensive about Neil Young’s involvement but he’s thankfully kept in check by the others here, although the tracks he leads probably make me mark down slightly. Still a great listen.
So many great songs on this album. Like this shit ain't fair and the runtime is only 36 mins. There's nothing to hate about this album at all. Some great folk rock. Top 5: Carry On, Teach Your Children, Almost Cut My Hair, Helpless, and Our House no bad songs 4.50/5
Wasn't really excited for this. Aside from Neil Young's solo stuff, I hadn't really been able to get into any of the other guys' stuff or what I thought I've heard from CSN&Y. That said, pretty shocked when the first two songs I recognized and regarded as fantastic, along with Woodstock. This is some primo Upper Peninsula driving music. The second half of the record does let up a tad (although Country Girl is fantastic, but its to be expected with Young singing), and I'm not the biggest fan of the more country tinged stuff, but this is a fantastic record.
Dad music, I get why. I haven't looked up the lyrics yet
Great album. Full of classic tunes and rich folk harmonies. I’ve become quite the fan of CSN(Y) in recent years.
This is pretty fucking great
Smooth sounds. Groovy vibes.
It's got Neil on it. Always worth at least 4*
favs: teach your children, almost cut my hair, helpless (letra)
On the song ‘almost cut my hair’ they sings about letting their freak flag fly - is that where the saying comes from!? Regardless, I enjoyed this! Felt like it had the right amount of variety between tracks and some definite hits as well.
I dig it and found the full album listen very enjoyable. The hits are still pretty great.
Fav Song: Our House
Ruv it wholesome
Some truly 5 star songs, some let downs (looking at you, title track)
Lovely without a dull moment, they make the 36 minutes of runtime the epitome of delightful and quaint, the harmonies are nice, the album carries enough variety to keep interesting, the rotating lead vocals per song helps that case Overall a joy
For no good reason, I've always had a sort of bad feeling about CSN&Y. I never particularly disliked any of the guys. I think Neil Young is a genius and I very much like Graham Nash's work. Crosby and Stills I thought of as middle-of-the-road, 70's, light rockers with nothing too interesting about them. That's not fair and I don't know where I got that from. This album plays like a Greatest Hits album. I was surprised that I know like 6 out of these 10 songs. I guess it's because they trade off on the vocals and play in slightly different styles. While none of it gets me Super Jazzed and jumping around the room, I do like most of it and would definitely listen again. "Carry On" is a great song. I had heard, but didn't know was from here. I'd heard "Teach your children well" but thought that was as solo effort. I generally hate steel guitars, but it's not as Western as it usually presents. People seem to know and like "Almost cut my hair" but I don't think I ever heard it and I'd be Ok not to hear it again. The music is pretty good, fire-y, but I think it's a bad vocal performance. "Woodstock" is a great song. Happy to see someone take the horror-show of Joni Mitchell and make good music out of it. When I first saw this pop up, I was thinking this was probably going to be a 2 album, but after having listened a couple of times, I have to give it a 4. Not my favorite type of music really, but so well done, I gotta do it.
Great album. Some of the songs have almost become parodies of hippie culture. They're better when they have Neil Young.
4 out of 5 Take me back to Woodstock. Essential classic rock from the flower child era.
Wasn't sure I would get much from this, but found it really enjoyable. I feel like the variety of each song throughout the album which comes from the different songwriters/singers really works, whilst still making a consistent overall product. Neil Young's songs stand above, alongside Our House which is a classic folk-pop singalong. Goes out on a bit of a drab note with the last song not on quite the same level. Want to revisit, but after two listens this is a: 9/10 Update - downgraded to 8/10
7/10
Love this. Surprisingly tender but also just really cool and bluesy. Big fan
Enjoyable Blues/Rock, all killer no filler
With two cats in the yard 💪
Crosby, Stills, and Nash were very good. Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young are even better. The slower songs were decent, but the more upbeat songs were gorgeous. Very pleasant album
Deja vu Woodstock Carry on Teach your children
It had a soul to listen to so I liked it
Was nice
“You had to be there maaan”. Another album (and dare I say that this comment applies to the ‘artist’ too) in this collection, that I have never made time to listen to, even if their reputation — or cultural ubiquity — is commonly taken for granted. “Our House” — it's CSN&Y, who knew? now I do — and I have decades of kids TV, insurance companies and banks who have used it as a jingle to thank for reducing its homely and earthy feel of a simple hope. I guess that's an unmistakeable aspect of this album now… listen to it fresh 55 years after it was released and it's impossible to miss the references to the state of mind of the musicians and the audiences that loved their music. Alongside “Our House”, it’s impossible to miss that the lyrics are always pointed away, out from the band, within their observations of the things that are changing and the things that they hope (wish?) to remain the same. Whether that subject just outside of their field of view, or whatever is passing by their window as the road unfurls (the freedom that “Helpless” suggests is another unruly idealistic tale of untamed roaming), or the view is outside, within that yard featuring 2 cats or the ‘children that must be taught’, the harmonies feel nostalgic… mourning a time that it seems almost impossible to imagine was any reality at the start of the 1970s let alone in 2025. Like ‘icon’, ‘myth’ is a easily overused word these days, but “Déjà Vu” reeks of mythology… and “Woodstock” should speak to any new season of optimism as much as it may have been as slightly wistfully seeking a memory that was disrupted as the smoke drifted on… And… another album that doesn't last long enough to appreciate all the fine tuning and collaboration put into it… so of course some tracks require revisting. It's not (referred to as) a concept album (?), but the pull of the road butts right up against the open-minded gaze — how can you miss the still contemplation up against the option to glide down the pathway of choice? I may have to stop listening to this, otherwise I too might also become one of those haircut requiring adherents of anything Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young related.
Hugely popular to this day, giant listen count with the hits getting over 100M to 200M listens. Radio staples "Carry On", the uber catchy "Teach Your Children" and the timeless "Our House" would get this into the Top1001 but then you add in classics "Helpless" & "Woodstock" plus the fan fav "Almost Cut My Hair". The harmonies are undeniable and the staying power is pretty amazing considering it's over 50 yrs old. "Country Girl" was the only track I didn't have any love for. Solid 4 stars, thanks for making me aware it was such a loaded album.
This was cool, worth another listen
Fun album, I really enjoyed some of the musical choices they made. There were often subtle decisions that really added to the piece such as just briefly switching to a minor harmony when singing about something sad during a happy song or giving a song a waltz feel but in 4/4.
Beautiful collection of songs that exemplifies the transition rock was taking between the summer of love and the rise of the gritty 70s sound
Tasty tasty tasty vocals and licks from the offset. CSNY the super group was a combo I hadn’t heard but goooodness pleased I have now. I was a bigger fan of the faster paced rock songs - the piano and slower songs less of a fan. Country girl was a split one for me - I didn't enjoy the start but the longer i listened I really got into it Favourites: Carry On, Everybody I love you, Almost cut my hair, Woodstock
This is the third time I have had Neil Young in some form on this list in under 100 albums and this is probably the best record of the 3. Harmonies have always carried CSN(&Y) as a group and the same is true with this album. Right from the start, two great songs in Carry On and Teach Your Children have excellent harmonies. But there’s more to this album than just that to like. Carry On was interesting in that it had almost a Doors like feel with the organ late. Almost Cut My Hair is harder than typical CSN music, but I think that’s what makes this record so interesting, is it feels like a much more diverse sound than other CSN work. What takes this album to another level is Young’s guitar playing, which adds an extra element to CSN’s already great sound. It’s true that not everything is amazing on this album. Helpless features Young’s trademark voice, but that’s not really a good thing, as it’s probably the weakest part of the record. Woodstock picks back up, the playing here is very good as it is on Deja Vu, the latter of which had some Yes-like vibes to it. Liked that it sounded pretty different than other stuff on this album. Our House is an instantly recognizable tune. A classic rock staple. 4 + 20 not so much, an instantly forgettable track. Country Girl was much better than the last. Liked the piano on this and, as usual, the harmonies. Young’s voice as lead here works because of the backing CSN vocals supporting. Finally, the closer Everybody I Love You was a good way to wrap up what proved to be an excellent record. All in all, an energetic and really good effort from CSNY.
Great album all the way through.
This was a lot lighter and brief than I expected. I enjoyed this and would listen to it again. I recognized a couple songs.
Good stuff. Will listen again.
Good 3.8
Had no clue this existed. Liked it from start to end.
Love hearing TikTok songs in the wild, but I liked this a lot
So many good songs on this album, especially almost cut my hair
Pretty good
Have some great songs. Side A is the best. With it has Suite Judy Blue Eyes on this album and it would have made it the best.
What a great album, especially side 1.
84% Best: Carry On; Woodstock; Country Girl Must-Hear? Sure
Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young have always been a band I've sort of judgementally avoided because for some reason I had it.in my head they were the kind of guitar-plucking, soft singing 70s folk group that would put you asleep behind the wheel of your car. Much to my surprise, I actually really liked this album and have heard their stuff before without realizing it, it's just really solid folk rock with some great vocal harmonizing and total earworm choruses. Definitely gonna be coming back to this one.
Enjoy yummy
3.5 stars, rounded up because I listened to it all weekend and did not get sick of it This was not Deja Vu for me because it was my first time listening to a CSNY album. What stood out to most was that Neil Young sounds really distinct from the rest of the group and his song sounds like his own solo work. Helpless is a real standout. Re: Almost Cut My Hair, it’s interesting that long hair was such a rebellion then. I knew that, but it’s funny to see it so explicitly stated. I was wondering if CSNY originated the phrase “let my freak flag fly,” but apparently that was Jimi Hendrix, and they were picking up on it. Do I like Our House because I’m old? It’s just a nice glimpse into an uncomplicated domestic moment.
Enjoyed it,
𝘋é𝘫à 𝘝𝘶 captures Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young at both their most inspired and their most fractious. The vocal harmonies are gorgeous, the songwriting contributions distinct, and the mix of folk, rock, and country remains a defining sound of the Laurel Canyon era. It’s telling that drummer Dallas Taylor and bassist Greg Reeves — both credited and pictured on the cover, a rarity for session players — may have been the only ones actually holding the group together during the sessions. 𝘌𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘺𝘣𝘰𝘥𝘺 𝘐 𝘓𝘰𝘷𝘦 𝘠𝘰𝘶 makes for a rather underwhelming closer, but when 𝘋é𝘫à 𝘝𝘶 hits its stride, it’s a masterclass in late ’60s/early ’70s West Coast rock.
LOVELY listen, this was a goodie. Highlights: Carry On, Deja Vu, 4 + 20
Another great album! Fav songs: Carry on, our house
So classic, but I wouldn't call it timeless. I love it, but it sounds dusty? Does that make sense? TIL Jerry Garcia is the slide on Teach and that makes a TON of sense. I think I'd still go 4.5, but dropping because it's never a go to ...
Great album.
The harmonies are so ingrained in the sound of CSN&Y that it could be taken for granted, but this isn't what one would consider "normal" for a vocal group to make it seem so natural. Listen to the a cappella harmonies at the 2:00 minute mark on the first track, Carry On-- just so much fun. But the music is more than the singing. On the same track, the guitar solos are like a call-and-response with the vocals, while the percussion and bass drive the tempo. The lyrics, providing a blend of rock and folk sensibilities, motivated a generation of singer/songwriter groups that followed. I love listening to Our House paint a picture again and again, while Teach Your Children still holds for the social commentary, as we still wait for parents of one generation to learn from their children of the next! All the hits from this album have received plenty of air play for more than 50 years, so it it was good to listen to the whole album to experience the other tracks. I don't think it's a perfect album as some tracks are weaker than others. Maybe being on the border between Boomer and Gen X, I can appreciate this music, but still be honest about its shortcomings. As visions of Mind the Gap (a generational trivia game) flash through my brain, I have to give this album a 4 instead of the 5 I was leaning towards.
I'm not even a casual fan of CSNY, but this is an incredible album. The gold standard for folk rock, or it should be. I was amazed at the number of songs that I recognized and genuinely liked. Almost all killer and no filler. Let your freak flag fly
Calm Vibes. Acoustic Rock, Folk Core and gives off proper 70s vibes.
For as twee as this is, I really love a lot of the songs on it
was good
Great album. Contains most of their biggest hits. Really displays the mix of talents and perspectives of the four members. Ranges from soft and sweet folk harmonies to Young fueled heavy blues guitar rock. Hit songs include Carry On, Teach Your Children, Helpless, Woodstock, Our House. Other notables include Almost Cut My Hair (for classic Young guitar).
4/7
4/5
Great tunes.
csn&y invented stoner rock?
I was familiar with Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young already. I’ve Teach Your Children and Our House many times. But there were also some new songs I hadn’t heard. This was peaceful and relaxing to listen to.
02/08/2025 For me nothing really stood out. It was a strong album though.
Great songs, tight harmonies, great album.
Pretty good!
Of its time but still timeless. Love the harmonies. Favorites: Carry On, Teach Your Children Would I listen to it again: Yes
Great album. Very nice vibes, love the guitar and vocals. Sounds like drinking craft beers at Paddy’s house
HELL YEAH DUDE! I listened to this a few days ago for the first time so I was happy to go ahead and give it a relisten so soon. This is so close to a 5 for me and not being able to give it a 4.5 feels very weird but, this album was truly amazing and set the tone for the genre as a whole when it was made.
++: Carry On, Almost Cut My Hair, Helpless, Woodstock, Déjà Vu, 4 + 20, Country Girl, Everybody I Love You +: Teach Your Children +-: Our House 8,8/10
good vibes
Joni Mitchell's Woodstock is superior
Definitely some enjoyable hits. But as a cohesive album, it's just pretty alright.
Didn’t realize there were so many radio hits on this one album. Like this as a whole more than the individual songs.
good album
plasnt :-) highlights: carry on, woodstock, our house, everybody i love you (aug 19 2024)
Classic.
SO GOOD
Some strong tunes on this record, still feel like skipping the most bonfire kumbaya ones unfortunately.
Likte det
It’s fine
favorites: teach your children, our house Classic
Pleasant listen. Blissfully short.
Song were generally good and I liked what was going on for the most part. Have to deduct a star for the Neil Young-featured vocals songs though.
Carry On and Almost Cut My Hair are boppers. Lots of slow and sleepy songs as well that seem to drag. Love the harmonies. Mixed bag altogether. Very close to a 5 star album but just didn't have enough consistency.
Good! A folk rock album I really do love! I’ll come back to this record!
I’m a little embarrassed to like this band. But man I’m a sucker for harmonies. Especially if you add some milky rubber band bass underneath. I saw them live with my mom before she lost her mind. “Love is coming to us all.” Maybe. Hippie shit but the real hippie shit.
This is just a really enjoyable album. I let it play on repeat probably 5 times.
A real surprise. Very influential
Folk rock classic. This one time the stars really aligned for this quartet. Nothing much to say about this that haven't already been said many times. Solid stuff.
First song slaps. I like the genre change halfway through. Cut my hair was my least favorite cause it was talk singy. Gave me cake vibes. 🤢 Woodstock had a sick guitar solo at the beginning. I like the “rap” in Deja vu. Our house was so cute. My favorite. Reminds me of one of my favorite Fun. songs: The Gambler. I wonder if it is a reference cause there’s a lyric that sounds very similar. 4+20 resonates with me. The beginning of country girl sounded like gambler singing with the piano chord thingy.
Liked this more than I thought I would, it’s basically a better version of the byrds when they turned country but with more rock n roll and a combination of moody blues like harmonies. Lots of catchy songs and a great cover of Joni Mitchell. Some really nice guitar playing throughout aswell. Favourites: carry on, helpless, Woodstock, our house and 4 + 20. Overall, 7/10.
Fav: Country Girl Least Fav: Almost Cut My Hair Neil Young always finding a way to feature in this list, just when you think his solo career isn’t enough
Had no idea this is where our house came from. This was lovely, would listen again.
A pleasant listen! Very nice!
ourrrr house is a very very very fine house didnt know that was this band! pleasantly surprised! this is one i'd definitely come back to!
Good
i loved this album more than i thought i would :)
My house is a banger Outside if that its fine, easy listen
Enjoyed the music
Neil Young is a nice inclusion to the dynamic
I’ve owned this on vinyl, cassette and cd. One of my go-to listens for decades. I love Almost Cut My Hair and Our House. Skipped Country Girl whenever possible due to Young’s voice.
Классно
I really enjoy this album! I love the sound, the harmonies, especially love that each song feels and sounds different front the rest. "Our House" from this album has been one of my all time favourite songs for a long time. It just makes me so cozy and happy! This would be a 5 aside from a few songs that aren't my favorite. 4.5/5!
Good
Makee on makee.
But it’s almost 5. Just few songs that wen meh lowed the rating
Better
Great! Great harmonies and overall really interesting and complex musically. Always loved Neil but hadn't listened to much CSNY. Very psych rock and reminded me of Yes with vocals and keys.
Fire album. Best Crosby stills Nash album but fuck Young, pompous liberal fuck. Every song is pretty much a hit. Jsut isn’t a five only because other ones that I love deserve it more
Amazing album, amazing band. If So Far appears on this list, it's cheating and will be a 5, but tough to give this higher than a 4 even with how great it is because it's missing my two fav CSNY songs. Even so, there's like 4 bangers and no song is bad, great album.
**** Great harmonies, a number of good songs, legendary album
Really good, started out especially strong
My favorite Crosby, Stills, & Nash album... because it has Neil Young. Great moody and "post-hippie" songs.
The mixing is ridiculous. The harmonizing gives me chills. The second phase of "Carry On"... living me breathless with that tom/bongo transition. The lead guitar woven in so nicely.
Great album. The 4 of them together make some seriously stellar music. Sometimes you just gotta let your freak flag fly!
Such a classic. The harmonies together followed by the distinct vocals separated. The album is an example of a pleasant folky, peaceful, acoustic sixties album. I just wish some of the lyrics weren't so corny.
THE supergroup of their era, what an album. While I really enjoyed every track, and the uniqueness of each member and their contributions, I think I need a few more listens to gain deeper appreciation for the whole project to really take it to the next level, which I do think is there.
Strong opening of first track, upbeat but tailed off into feeling derivative. Most likely it was not at the time of release. Our House stands out on first listen as familiar songs often do. A couple more listens (it's a short album) and the harmonies & musicianship shine through
So many great songs on this album. Really excellent
A bona fide classic, those harmonies are killer. Kudos to whomever was wrangling the egos on display.
Wonderful album. Classic harmonies. Laurel Canyon all the way. Still I hope to never hear Our House ever again
Darned fine folk rock. But sadly I don't have much else to say than that. I enjoyed this album but I don't expect to be seeking it out much. It all works, it's just not my favorite thing in the world. I've been a fan of Neil Young's music so his contributions are noticed and appreciated.
Carry on Love is coming Love is coming to us all
Harmonies. Hits. Lyrics. Just a great time.
Certainly one of the classics of pop music, which you can always listen to.
Not all great but too much interesting stuff to rate low. FS: Our House (mainstream) or Helpless (turns out I love Neil Young)
Mye fint her.
Really enjoyed this one to be honest.
Sure, it's old dad music, but that's not gonna stop me from enjoying the cheesy sounds of 70s crap rock that's supposedly super influential. I mean, 'Our House' and 'Carry On'? Fun stuff, man.
Very lovely, this group got me into the folkier singer/songwriter genre. Trying to analyze why this time, the vocal melodies reminded me of Yes a little bit and maybe that was the through line that grabbed me (3.5/5)
I liked this one. Great musicianship, tight harmonies, enough variety that you can tell different people were the lead writers for each song. A couple of the big ones stood out to me, but heard the title track for the first time and most of the others. I really enjoyed just about everything on this, but not sure it would become part of my regular rotation. Did add to library.
good vibe! sonzao. ouvir mais!!
Great album, some iconic songs.
Way better than expected. Not the typical csny forgettable bs. Some variety and lot of good tunes
Quite good
Would be a 5 if it weren’t for a couple cheesy AF Graham Nash songs.
Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young....the original super group? Carry On is a solid opening song. Teach Your Children is in the running for the most overrated songs in history. Followed up with Almost Cut My Hair which is one of the most underrated songs of all time. I heard it on one of those "deep cut Saturday" radio promos and loved it. It is probably my favorite CSNY (or CSN for that matter) song. Neil Young has to center Canada of course. Our House is terrible too. The rock songs are better than the folk songs.
Amazing. 4 Stars.
classic folk music
Excellent
Standout Songs: Almost Cut My Hair Woodstock 4 + 20
ELSKAAA helpless:,( Neil Young:,(
This album is wild, starts off with hippies singing about love. Drops into a blues tune that starts off with him having the thought of cutting his hair. Then a song about wanting to move to Canada to escape the draft but being told no. The whole time you're listening you can just feel the 60's. It is a capsule of time in an album.
Classic Rock, the best album from a group of talented guys, theres something lowkey and honestly stripped back that i love about it that i cant quite decide on
I really really enjoyed this! I wasn't a fan of every song but the ones that hit, HIT! Some songs have this epic feel to them. Also great harmonies on everything!
Reminds me of my parents
Great stuff from a legendary quartet. Definitely a staple of 70s rock and deserving of its fame. Favorite track: Almost Cut My Hair
Classics
One of those bands I tend to think of as too folksy for my tastes, but honestly this album was really great. Classic tunes.
Solid album, very pleasant and great songwriting.
Absolutely beautiful harmonies and some true classic songs. Starts strong but ends a bit weak.
Yep enjoyed this one
I Almost Cut My Hair after listening to this one. Had some Deja Vu for sure.
Really good songs, great sounds and shoutout to the bass player.
This was excellent but probably deserves a few more listens. My favorite was “Our House”. 4.5/5
It's a good album, if very much of its time. Not that that's a shortcoming - it's what gives many works of art their poignancy. And any album that contains both "Almost Cut My Hair" and "Woodstock" is destined to have some sort of place in the history books.
4+20 is now my favorite CSN&Y song.
This album probably hits super hard if you're smoking cheap 60s weed. Jokes aside, I appreciate this album, even though I'm not a super big fan of this era's folk music (or really any era, now that I think about it). Some bigger hits on this and everyone sounds great. Lots of talent going around. 7/10.
chillig 3 - 4
four kings slaying and serving a whole album
This is music.
Really pretty
I will never not love "Suite: Judy Blue Eyes."
I really enjoyed it. 4+20 was my favorite
Goede storytelling/teksten. Our house goed nummer. 7.8/10
Very good guitar riffs
Great album, reminds me a lot of what my dad would play in the car. 4.0/5 Fav song: teach your children
Only recognise one song but great album!
3.7 3x some classics on here and a good time
Lotta classics, I think this would have got 5 stars on a Monday, 4 stars on a Friday
Carry on is immaculate relate heavily to "almost cut my hair" Our house to end of album is masterful entire sound is rich and folksy, familiar but fresh
Maybe a 5
A CSNY album is always a great choice for a long road trip. I can just imagine myself as a trucker or a beat up cop driving through 70s America with this blasting from my car.
Some iconic stuff on here. A couple skips for me though which brings it down from a 5.
A lot of pleasant songs
Amazing songwriting, but still uneven. I don’t think these guys could make a perfect album because they just have different styles and don’t feel super unified. Still, this was very good. ML #92.
Skönt album Bästa låtarna: Helpless, Our house
Amazing record. I love the blending of the voices. Our House is a classic. Very close to 5 stars!
So I love them….and have my whole life. I always listened to “So Far” and not this cut of this album. They share a lot of the same tracks though. Some of my favorite songs of all time are on here. It’s great to be able to listen to them with the good headphones, with especially the harmonies. I’m gonna have to listen to the last few tracks which I’m not as familiar with again, I got distracted and listened but didn’t REALLY listen you know? Overall, love it.
Awesome. Classique. Makes me want to go on a road trip to the desert and have an emotional microdose experience next to a campfire.
85/100. Déjà Vu by Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young is a beautifully produced album that truly captures the magic of legends at work. The record features lively instrumentation and harmonious vocals, making it a joy to hear these iconic musicians jam together.
Perfect inflection point between 60’s folk/rock and what was to come in the early 70’s for rock. Everybody was for a moment in that band totally together and making a near perfect album. 4.5⭐️
7.5/10 Fave track: Deja Vu
This album is mad. Like, Teach Your Children Well and Our House are lovely little songs, but what are they doing on an album with Helpless, Almost Cut My Hair and Country Girl on? It's not dull though, and much of it is brilliant.
Exceeded my expectations. Expected more mellow/ all folk and it was more dynamic than I anticipated. Some catchy tracks and good songwriting
Truly heavenly harmonies. I do wish I could easily differentiate their vocals (besides those of Young). One of the better folk albums I’ve heard from this time period. Standout track is: “Woodstock”
I can see why this album is the best selling of any of their other albums either as a group or individually. I never realized there were so many of the classic CSN&Y songs came from one album.
Excited because I've never listened to one of these all the way through.
Always great 👍
“Teach Your Children” and “Our House” are the type of songs that you’ve heard so many times that you can’t really have an opinion on them. I mean, do you like or dislike “Jingle Bells” or “America the Beautiful” or are they just part of your musical DNA that is too deeply embedded to have an opinion on? In addition to those two “too big to like or dislike” songs, “Carry On”, “Helpless”, “Woodstock” and “Deja Vu” are all good. This is an impressive album. I don’t play it often but I do like it.
Perfect!
This supergroup came together for one album, completely knocked it out of the park, and went (roughly) their separate ways. Whether it’s fast-paced, clattering folk rock, heartfelt moral ballads or bass-heavy psychedelic controlled insanity, C, S, N and Y all hold up together to produce an incredibly cohesive and strong folk rock classic, entering the 70s with a near-unmatchable bang. Stop me if you think you’ve heard this one before, but Déjà vu is another of these albums that can’t be described further than what I’ve poorly attempted to say in the previous paragraph. A largely heralded and respected folk rock record, for all the right reasons. There’s nothing that hasn’t been said before. Just sit back and enjoy, I suppose.
Simply fantastic. Four massive egos fighting for musical dominance. Neil youngs music is still boring and whiny though lol Also the last two tracks don't quite do it for me, but the first 8 (except helpless) are incredible..... I just noticed that track 9 is also a Neil young track. God he's so overrated lol
I enjoyed that, more bluesy thank folky.
I was clearly in the right mood for this because I really enjoyed it.
A near perfect album, with the fantastic harmonies as expected from CSN, an extra heap of grit added by Young's, and superb songwriting as usual throughout. Best Tracks: - Our House - Helpless - Carry On Worst Tracks: N/A Rating: 9/10
I always forget how much I like this until I listen to it.
Absolutely beautiful and powerful. If it wasn’t for one dud song this would be a 5
Favourite album so far - really enjoyed this.
I had no idea what album this was and until I saw the cover and realized I'd listened to this album my whole life. It's impressive to see so many talented musicians get along as well as they did while each contributing to each other's work. Really just pulls you back in time
3.5 rounded up
Love this. But, man I don't like Neil Young
such a classics, great album
4 out of 5. I've only recently began to appreciate their music and this was a good start for me.
Enjoyed! 4/5
Klassiker.
This album was fun. The vocal harmonies were pretty amazing and the guitar parts are so good. I really enjoyed this album. It has that "old time" feel to it. "Everybody I Love You" , "Carry On" , and "Our House" are AMAZING. Liked Songs: "Everybody I Love You" , "Carry On" , "Our House" , "Teach Your Children" , "Almost Cut My Hair" , "Deja Vu" , and "Country Girl"
liked songs: Carry On, Almost Cut My Hair, Woodstock, Deja Vu Honestly, Our House isn't that good but the rest of the album is pretty neat. Lots of cool vocal harmonies, and good variety (probably because the songs were written by 4 different individuals). Very good. 3.75
Honestly banger of a album
Pretty good, classic stuff
Excellent. Favourite songs - cut my hair, our house.
Definitely the kind of music I like though not a top favourite—low 4 or high 3. Unfortunately I overdid it listening to Neil Young ‘Harvest’ as a student and haven’t quite recovered!
Good bass lines. More of a coffee shop vibe for me. I would have enjoyed the concert back in the day.
Well, I've gotten an album from Crosby, Stills & Nash, and I've gotten plenty of albums from Neil Young, so surely the combining of these talents is bound to make something great, right? Right indeed! This album's great! I really like it. All four band members get their own songs to shine, though between "Teach Your Children" and "Our House," I think Graham Nash is the clear winner of this album. Of course, Stephen Stills, David Crosby, and the then-newly-added Neil Young are also great. The sound is nice. There's a nice mix of acoustic and electric folk rock. The pacing is good. This is just a very strong folk rock album with lots of talent behind it. Amazing album right here. High 4/5.
Carry On, Almost Cut My Hair, Woodstock, Deja Vu, I really like and have listened to those on a compilation album a long time ago. I love their harmony of voices. I never cared for the slide guitar on Teach Your Children. Overall a really great album with just a few misses for me, 4 star.
When it comes to CSN (and sometimes Y), the vocal harmonies are the draw. This album doesn't disappoint on that front. The classic rock radio hits are almost all here. The deep-cut highlights are "Helpless", "Déjà vu", and "Country Girl". I'm not a big fan of Neil Young's voice, so I would have preferred Helpless and Country Girl had different lead singers, but even still, they're great songs. 4 stars
This is a very different album, but I think I kind of feel similarly to how I did about The Who's "Who's Next" album. It has one of my favorite songs of all time ("Our House" in this case), and is generally strong overall, but falls just a little short of a perfect rating for me. This is the follow-up to Crosby, Stills, & Nash, which came out the year before (and was album #192 on here for me), this time adding Neil Young to the mix. The harmonies are as clean as always, but they still manage to rock a bit at times too. "Teach Your Children" is another great track on here, but they lose a half point because it's also on their previous album (kind of weird to recycle a song so quickly). I actually read up on "Our House" a bit here, and I didn't realize that Graham Nash wrote it while living with Joni Mitchell. It's such a simple song, but one that just perfectly captures the small moments of living with someone you love. Anyway, this was generally great. You kind of know what you get from these guys, but this is almost definitely some of their best work, whether individual or as a group. Favorite song: Our House Other: Carry On, Teach Your Children, Almost Cut My Hair, Helpless, Woodstock, 4 + 20, Country Girl 1/12/25
Easy 4/5 for this super group of talented musicians.
Still sick but this album is good. Obviously know and love those hits - Helpless and Our House - but especially hearing the later this time really had me tearing up
The Neil Young songs are peak
today i was in the car with my friend Mani and we both got so excited cuz we saw a licence plate that was labeled CSNY XXX and it made me sad that ill never own the CSNY 420 licence plate ... anyways its always been weird to me that neil decided that the best use of his time in the early 70s was to form a super group with these three guys who were already making records together ... i love crosby, and think N & S are totally good musicians but yeah there is super super killer tracks on here and Ohio is just an all time neil track ... ultimately Teach Your Children is my fav one ... its beautiful :)
I'm a fan of this sound, so I really enjoyed this album!
Great! I grew up to my dad playing CSN on the guitar
a classic!! our house, helpless, teach your children are my favs from this one
A staple. Our House is my favorite from the group. If you have not watched the Laurel Canyon series, the parts about Graham Nash, Joni Mitchell, and their relationship really put this whole era of music in a new light.
Very good
I love their sound. But a bit repetitive
I've never listened to this album, but I knew a few of the songs (Helpless). Each of the CSNY dudes has their own thing going on here, the tracks alternate between leads but they all work and flow together. Beautiful harmonies and nice guitar work are the name of the game.
Kinda biased here cos my da loves this album so I grew up listening to it Better than most of their other output I reckon.
it was cool
Not my favorite but I love the harmonies and Helpless is my favorite CSNY song
Can't believe how many classics are on this album!
Woodstock/Our House the Best. Liked the album conceptually more conceptually than in actuality.
Every track with Neil Young is amazing
One of the first things that caught my attention about this album was the cover. It’s unusual to see Dallas Taylor and Greg Reeves receiving second billing, a gesture that, while unexpected, speaks to the collaborative spirit of the record. It feels rare for non-frontline members to get this kind of recognition, especially on such a high-profile release. As for the music, it’s excellent—a soothing blend of folk-rock that feels both timeless and comforting. Each track brings something unique, yet the album flows seamlessly as a cohesive whole. It’s exactly the kind of music I’d reach for on a quiet evening or when I want to unwind. I decided not to pick a standout track this time. It feels almost unfair, given the collaborative nature of the project, to highlight one song and risk sidelining the contributions of the others. Score: 4/5
when young is added to an already good group it gets better
It's weird. When I first heard this album, what, three or four years ago, I really loved it. Jus', goodness, the harmonies. I'd heard tell of them, and they lived up to every expectation; they were beautiful. I can't even remember anything about it other than that — which, hey, that alone was enough to get me excited to hear this again. So, yeah, it's three or four years later now. Fittingly, I was expecting to have a sense of déjà vu in regards to my reaction. And yet... I don't know. I'll say that, absolutely, this is a great album. These four men are great writers and composers. They play great, and their singing, especially their harmonizing, can be incredible. (And, yes, I don't have a problem with Young's. It's different, but it's fine.) I do believe it deserves the acclaim and accolades it gets. However — and maybe it was because the way I was trying to listen to it (on my back with my eyes closed) didn't really work as well as it did the last time I tried it — I wasn't exactly as wowed by it as I was before? I can't really put my finger on it, or what could've changed since I first heard it... Or if it just caught me on a bad day, who can say? Whatever the case, I kind of found it a little bit tricky to really engage with the album like I wanted to. The best I can figure is that, well, I've heard a lot of new music in the interim. I've especially heard a lot this year, thanks to this Randomizer. With my expanded palette, maybe this album just doesn't sound as special to me as it used to? There were certainly a lot of spots where, despite my praise for their harmonies — and I do still believe it, despite what I'm about to say — I ended up thinking, "These just sound like 70's harmonies. Put on another random record from the decade, I'm sure I'll hear something else like it." I didn't think that often enough to find it a problem, but I think it's still relevant to how I engaged I ended up being. And I'll tell you, I really didn't expect there to be as many rockers as there are. Even if there's only two, it sure goes against my perception that this group only does varities of acoustic folk. Like, goodness, this arrangement of "Woodstock"? And what do you mean this arrangement was originally meant for Jimi Hendrix? And that they actually pull it off? Crazy, man. And here I thought they were just "Carry On" ("Suite: Judy Blue Eyes" without Young). Big points for rocking, I suppose. But on whole... I wanna say, if I thought I would've had the time to write this review tomorrow, I absolutely would have. It's entirely likely that tomorrow I would've been in a better state of mind to focus on and actually talk about this album. And certainly, I'll tell you, if I was asked to rate and review this album all that time ago, I would've given this a 5 straight. However, I can only talk about what I got out of this album today, and today... Eh, it's still a 4. I don't believe it really deserves to go any lower. But, yeah, I'unno. I'm probably gonna look back on this review and regret writing it the way I did, but, hey, that's just how it breaks down sometimes. At least Weird Al's pastiche "Mission Statement" remains one of my top three originals from him. Great stuff if you haven't heard it before, goodness.
liked some songs on this one and reminds me a bit of steely dan.
Some all time classics on here Carry on and Joni Mitchell’s Woodstock are stand outs. 4.25/5
Woodstock!!1!1!
Great harmonies from the boys. I really enjoyed this. 4 stars
This was pretty good. I already knew one song off of this album and I was surprised to hear other ones that I liked. Wasn’t expecting the different sounding music.
Carry On 3.3 Teach Your Children 3 Almost Cut My Hair 4.3 Helpless 4 Woodstock 3.8 déjà vu 3.4 Our House 3.6 4 + 20 3 Country Girl 3.5 Everybody I Stills Love You 3.6 Score: 3.55
A classic that holds up well. Most underrated song on the album is clearly Almost Cut My Hair. But if I'm nitpicking, I would definitely have picked 4-Way Street over the studio album.
They really ceded this one to Young and it worked! Nothing really stands out to me but the whole thing is an excellent listen.
Quite liked some of the songs, but the style just doesn't really hold up for me as much as some of their contemporaries
A very member berries 4 but any iteration of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young reminds me of childhood. Holds up
Another album that I listened to a lot as a kid. Everything still holds up to me except the song Almost Cut My Hair which now feels like a song by the sports guy
No nostalgic connection for me, CSN(Y) occupies a sort of background folk rock that comes on adjacent album radios but I would never specifically identify nor seek out. That made it a perfect candidate for a deeper dive and Wikipedia research to understand what I might not be appreciating. It good.
Low effort review as I'm busy today, CSN are generally good, I still prefer Crosby on his lonesome but there's joy here. I know none of these songs but basically everything here is very good. Feel sure would reward repeat listening.
Simply a solid folk rock album that is elevated by Neil Young’s fantastic guitar. Helpless is always a welcomed listen but really the opening 5 tracks are all excellent, the whole group is demonstrating they got harmonies down as well. It’s funny, I always thought Our House was a Beatles or Beatles adjacent track but I was wrong, still don’t really care for it all that much but the sentiment is nice I suppose. 4 stars
Had no expectations for this but loved it! Amazing voices, didn't expect to recognise a few too
Really solid. Great length. Some great tunes. Not quite 5 but somewhere in the 4s.
Didn’t know what to expect going into this album, but I see why it’s a classic. A superpower of rock/folk music geniuses collaborating on a punchy 30-ish minute album. Great lyrics, great beats. Perfect for a Saturday morning or a sunny summer day. Definitely going to be throwing this on again at some point.
Quite liked it.
Second half slaps
Classics
Love their vibe. Would definitely listen again!
Good album from a good band! Got a good bunch of songs in 'Carry On', 'Almost Cut My Hair', and particularly 'Our House' which we played at our wedding and holds sentimental value to me. Their vocal harmonies are definitely what makes them stand out as a group, and also coincidentally most present on the tracks that are the best, like 'Our House' for example where it almost makes the entire song. I've read a lot about how this group had troubles getting along, especially with mr. Young who was only part of the group for quite a short while. It's funny how his most noticeable appearance here is on 'Helpless', where it almost feels like he's singing solo. Overall, solid album for sure, but lacks some "better songs" to really punch through. Weak 4 for me.
Last time we had a "Crosby, Stills & Nash" album I thought it was going to be a 4 or 5 star for sure, but I ended up a bit disappointed. This album however really delivered. Of the bat you get a chill songs with harmonies in "Carry on". A few tracks later a surprisingly heavy blues song "Almost cut my hair", the latter part of the song made me think of heavy rock and was probably my favourite part of my whole album. "Our House" was probably the only song I'd heard before and it is a good song although a bit odd. I still don't know why it works but it really does. With its runtime shy of 40 min it is the perfect length for an album for me. Clear 4 stars.
Straight away, the bridge in Carry On features a tempo change and an eerie organ melody before the guitar solo, super neat. I like Almost Cut My Hair as well, midpaced and groovy with great guitars. The moody title track has another quick-to-slow moment and nice bass parts too. Our House is the biggest hit, it's poignant with its vocal harmonies and I like it quite a bit. The organ returns on Country Girl to great effect. I thought I might find this too folksy, but there's a grandeur to it and enough diversity in the songwriting to keep me engaged.
"Déjà Vu" is the second studio album by Crosby, Stills and Nash and the first with Neil Young. The album was self-produced by the band members and most of the songs were recorded in individual sessions by those band members. The time frame for the members was dark with a death and break-ups with girlfriends. Critically, it had mixed reviews but, commercially, it was a huge success hitting #1 in the US and #5 in the UK and has been the biggest selling album in each member's career. In 2023, the album was selected by the Library of Congress into the National Recording Registry for its artistic significance. Acoustic guitar thumping opens "Carry On." Stephen Stills at the helm and lead vocals. A song broken into two parts. Those familiar harmonies. Part I finishes with the lyrics "Love is coming to us all." Stills gets the wah-wah guitar going in Part II and chases a girl. The second song switches to a Graham Nash song in "Teach Your Children." This has more a country feel with Jerry Garcia on steel pedal guitar. Nash wrote this after seeing a photo of a kid playing with a gun and questions the societal messages that parents are sending their children. Neil Young's vocals come to the forefront in "Helpless." It's slower with a background acoustic guitar and piano. The harmonies really take this song home. Young was inspired, so to say, by having polio as a kid and suffering permanent damage on his left side. One of my favorite Neil Young songs. Joni Mitchell wrote "Woodstock" without ever being there and the band captures the spirit. More harmonies and nice electric guitar. "They got to get back to the garden" A great Young lead guitar solo outro. The album needed a nice, happy song and Graham Nash delivers in "Our House." Simple vocals. The catchy "La-la-la-la" chorus. An ode to counter-culture domestic bliss living. Neil Young combines two Buffalo Springfield songs in the three-part ballad "Country Girl." A melancholy vibe. Some more harmony highlights and actually each band member takes turn on vocals. I have no idea what this song is about; there's a waitress, country girl and celebrity mentioned. There's no doubt denying the high level of very good to great songs on this album. Neil Young seemed to play a major part in the ones I liked. The harmonies and vocals are mostly at the forefront with the instruments in the background. This album is similar to their debut, in that besides the harmonies, this seems like four solo albums. The mood definitely has a darker edge though. Most of these songs have had lots of airplay on classic rock radio in the US and most these songs deserve it. This album sounded really good to me today and will do so for most people too.
What a pleasant, harmonic listen. A bundle of fantastic tracks and a steal at only 36 minutes. Misters Crobsy, Stills and Nash sure can lay it down. Neil Young's voice is like in a live recording of Bob Dylan where he starts blowing a gale into that fucking harmonica and it feels like you've suddenly met the same fate as Lev Trotsky. I genuinely forgot he was involved in this project until "Helpless", where to my displeasure his whiny fucking voice shot straight through my ears. I greatly enjoyed every track on this album where Neil Young was not the lead vocalist.
Very good
