I like the viba of this album, but the first song kind of satisfies that style with the rest of it being unnecessary fluff. I enjoyed what I heard, though.

From RYM Mbalax is a popular genre of Wolof Music that was developed in Senegal in the 1970s. It was rooted in njuup, a Serer ritual tradition. In addition, it incorporated influences from Cuban, Congolese and American popular musics, and soon became the predominant style in Senegal and the neighbouring Gambia. In the following decades it has grown to be one of the most popular styles of West African Music, aided by the global popularity of Youssou N'Dour (leader of Étoile de Dakar and later Super Étoile de Dakar) and Thione Seck (ex-member of Orchestra Baobab and leader of Raam Daan), as well as a younger generation of successful artists such as Alioune Kassé and Alioune Mbaye Nder. The group Super Diamono, featuring Ismaël Lô, also played a significant role in the development and popularization of the genre. Mbalax is traditionally characterised by the rhythms played on sabar drums, although this traditional drum is occasionally replaced by a trap set or even a drum machine. In the 1990s, a keyboard-driven style of mbalax dubbed "marimbalax" was pioneered by the band Lemzo Diamono.
That was good but rather linear. The second half didn't grab me as much as the first half did.

Before listening to Immigres, just about all I'd heard of Youssou N'Dour's remarkable voice was his magnificent contribution to Peter Gabriel's 2002 track, "Signal to Noise". Described by Rolling Stone as "the most famous singer alive" in Africa, N'dour's also collaborated with Paul Simon (percussion on "Diamonds on the Soles of Her Shoes"), Neneh Cherry, and many more besides. He's become a "gateway" into Africa's popular music for many a sheltered Westerner (me), and so it feels difficult to argue with his inclusion in this canon. "Immigres", N'Dour's sixth album released the year before "Graceland", showcases the mbalax style, which I'd never heard of before today. It's a term N'Dour coined to describe percussion-heavy dance music from Senegal, emerging in the 1970's. As such, this is an album to quicken the pulse, galvanise the body and lift the spirit. The four tracks here are all extended jams showcasing syncopated rhythms, constantly shifting and overlapping grooves, N'Dour's voice ringing out triumphantly on top. There's frequent improvisation at work, giving every member of the band a chance to shine, but usually returning to a strong central melody. It's far from the music I'm used to listening to, so I'm rating on a tentative first impression and won't attempt to analyse it in any more depth just yet, but it's very well performed and it's always great to have the chance to hear something new. "World" music albums on this list are few and far between, so I appreciated the chance to hear N'Dour without any Westerners involved.
Exactly the kind of thing I want to get from this project. Good but not one I'd revisit, and I'd probably enjoy it more as just instrumental pieces. A chill warm orange sunset. 28/03/23

Good drums/rhythm
Quite a bit more smooth jazz in this than I expected, which was welcomed. It was nicely fused with the African drums and some synthesizers for the pretty cool I really sound. The longest song didn’t quite do much for me which made the album a bit of a disappointing listen. 6/10

It's alright I guess
This is one of the things I love about doing a record a day. This was so different than what I'm used to and so much fun to listen to. I never would have know about it.
Known for collaborating with Paul Simon on his masterpiece Graceland, this record showcases Senegalese mbalax music, characterized by overlapping percussion rhythms and a distinctive chamber aesthetic. It's pretty dated, even for its time. They have the most basic synths that don't incorporate well, but they do add atmosphere in "Pitche Mi". I prefer these long groovy pieces over a series of shorter tracks, but they still suffer from repetition, especially the 3rd track. I found his vocals to be excessive and grating, but he has his moments in the first track, and he does a stellar dreamy performance in the second. The polyrhythmic grooves kept me engaged for the whole album. I wanted to be more critical of this album, but it's unique, has its moments, and honestly I did enjoy most of it.
I’ve been a fan of world music (focusing on percussion) since hearing Mickey Hart’s Planet Drum. This record is great. Really groovy. The percussion rocks. Solid.

It’s some good world music
One of the joys of this album list is that it gets me to listen to things of which I was completely unaware, and have no preconceptions. This was such an album. I enjoyed it but am not sure I'd listen again - the sections I really enjoyed started to become repetitive quite quickly, and I am not sure if my inability to understand the lyrics setracts from my enjoyment. Overall, I'm glad to have found "something new"

Al fin un álbum que no es ni británico ni estadounidense, porque quien escribió este libro pareciera que piensa que lo único bueno es la música de esos países y es más que obvio que música buena hay en cualquier lado del mundo y ninguna es mejor que otra. Es bueno este disco, es distinto, y nos fuimos por un rato fuera del rock y del pop, y eso es importantísimo.

There are far too few non-western artists on this list, so I was already feeling good about this album, just to see it here. But this is absolutely not just a token of diversity meant to appease. Rather, this is a testament to the universal language of music, which I hope will open the eyes and ears of listeners touring this list. I personally enjoyed the vibrant vocals and horns, the hypnotic drum chorus, and the iterative verse-over-verse permutations of the opening track 'Immigres/Bitim Rew' and the closing track 'Badou'. The central two tracks are much more mellow, but similarly rich in their musical texture. This is a wonderful introduction to the music of Senegal and I look forward to exploring the artists and albums of that country and region further; with or without this list's recommendations.

A fun, vibrant LP - the longer track lengths and relative lack of vocals means this one falls into the background music category a bit, but not in a negative way.

Giving this a fairly safe 3 stars and thought it would be great as bkg music in a film but as for me listening to it over and over, unlikely.
"World music" is a dreadful term for various reasons, and it's also something that, frankly, I don't really have much experience with. As such I don't really know what I think about this cos I'm not really sure how to respond to it; I'm giving it three stars cos that seems fair, I did find it pleasing to listen to.

Again, it's amazing how difficult it is to judge music when I know so little about the history, culture, and language from which it was derived. However, this was pretty jammy. It reminded me a lot of when I used to play in the high school jazz band - it has that kind of free-formy vibe. Also, I'm real impressed with the producing and engineering. There is a lot going on, but all the "stuff" came through crisp. Really dug it.

Timeless album that certainly doesn't sound like its from 1984, and holds up really well today. I like how compact this album is, only 4 songs, no fat. I also like the joyous vibe from this album, really chill guitar especially on Pitche Mi and the brass isn't in your face like some of his contemporaries, eg Hugh Masakela and Fela Kuti.
Look I can appreciate it—it was interesting—but I’d say not my cup of tea.

Nada malo como disco de Afro-Pop, incluso sin ser la música que acostumbro oír me pudo parecer entretenida y hasta mejor que lo de los Zombies que no muerden que oímos hace algunos meses. Conocía el nombre de Youssou porque participa en un tributo a Lennon en el que hace su version de 'Jealous Guy' que es bastante buena.
Really struggled with this one. Loved the beats and the melodies but because I didn’t understand the lyrics I felt I was missing out on half the song. Also felt that the tracks were too long, again if I knew what the subject was or what they were singing about it may have made more sense.

Youssou N'dour's voice is very distinctive; I've never liked it. The music is very rhythmic, very percussive. Interesting guitars and brass. Unfortunately, I don't like this mix at all, and N'dour's voice is the key element. It has something cartoonish about it. Not what I want in a good song. Don't get me wrong, the album is certainly something special, interesting for a European listener, but I just can't connect with it.

Uh oh. I dropped my late-stage capitalism deflection propaganda in this fresh concrete. Must use French scapegoat instructions. Immigrés?!? What the hell is that?? Nyahh. Another day, another uhh slay. Yes, we have our token world music entry as the author of the book is fidgeting in his throne waiting to tell us all about a lousy electronica outfit from Clapham tomorrow. This was fine. I tend to enjoy music from Africa when I do have the chance to hear it, but this felt a little repetitive and vocal heavy for me. Not a bad record, but I can't help feeling as though this could've been a stronger day. Maybe we could've ditched a couple Bowie albums and added some more Malian music? How about some Springsteen bites the dust in favour of, well, anything. 2 HIGHLIGHTS: B.U.M Equipment branded coffins (?)
I remember Youssou N'Dour on 'In your eyes', 'shaking the tree' and 'seven seconds away', thinking he had one of the most distinctive voices in World music and the whole Peter Gabriel/WOMAD scene. This 1984 effort was apparently the recording that opened the ears of the wider world to his music. It doesn't do a great deal for me but its polyththmic displacements can be intriguing, it's four long tracks that repeat a lot with Youssou's unique improvisations. Clearly fine music of its kind but I regrettably prefer his contribution to western music.

However, including this banal collection of whatever ethnic drumming/fluting/etc. on this list is yawn-yawn. Better than Paul Simon doing the same though. Not my thing... Too repetitive and droning. Points for keeping it short. Variety is important to me, within an album and especially within a song. At first you might think "oh this is interesting" but if you're really LISTENING to this, and not just having it on in the background, your brain might go a bit numb. Likely never listening to this again, it's a no from me.

Not really my jam, but glad to hear new sounds to me. Would be happy to come across this while sunning boat side, but I can't recall exactly what I've heard only just a few hours ago. 2-3 rats.
On the plus side, the rhythmic interplay on this record is interesting and the musicianship is excellent. On the minus side, the vocals sound like they are just drifting over the music without any organic connection and the songs have little harmonic movement, making them seem like they are going in circles.

It’s always interesting to hear music from a different country and culture but this does nothing for me. Listening to Desi Arnez playing Babaloo has the same impact.
Ik sta hier normaalgesproken op geen enkele manier om te springen maar zo tijdens het werk is dit best een prima album om een keer aan te hebben staan. Zeker na die onzin van zojuist (Kapitein Rundshart). Moet ik er een cijfer op plakken (en zoals we inmiddels weten is dat wel onderdeel van het bijna dagelijkse luisterritueel) dan zit dit voor mij ergens tussen de 2 en 3. Ik denk eigenlijk dat een 2 dan toch het meest realistisch is.

The world music just doesn't do it for me.
Immigres is just another world album in the sea of world albums. Apparently, N'Dour's Wikipedia page says that he helped create a genre known as mblax. Well, this new genre certainly sounds a lot like all the other genres I've heard from Africa. I am a bit sad that i have to be so harsh on it because the musicianship itself is alright and that is the big reason why i can't justify a 1 star review here. But this album was still just really boring. It was just that kind of music that goes in one ear and out the other and the one that i just forgot about once i finished. The album itself doesn't sound bad and i get why people would enjoy it but its just not something that was able to keep my interest. Best Song: Immigres / Bitim Rew Worst Song: Taaw

This up made me want to sip on a Pina Colada and watch the sun set into the ocean. I can't sit here and tell you this is my music of choice. Nor would I stop and listen if I ran across this on the radio. But this wasn't to bad and I'm sure I'd have no complaints if my toes were in the sand. I'm happy he kept is relatively short too. 2.5 for making me think of the ocean. 2.5

Album #46 Youssou N'Dour: Immigres Pretty cool album, definitely not one I ever would have listened to. The album is pretty short too, so it doesn’t outstay its welcome despite the song lengths being a bit long. Sort of falls into the same category as Vento de Maio for me, an enjoyable album, but since it’s in another language, it doesn’t have too much re-listen potential for me. While it’s on though, it is quite fun; the horns especially were good. I do wonder if there is a non-English album on this list that will truly captivate me; I feel like a lot of my enjoyment from music comes from the lyricism and being able to sing along, and since I’m a pathetic monoglot, I’m resigned to English albums. So though it isn’t bad, it’s gonna be in the 5 range for me, which isn’t a bad score per se, just means not much desire for a reslisten. Best Tracks: Immigres/ Bitim Rew, Badou, Pitche Mi Worst Track: Taaw Score out of 10: 5.5
I couldn't find this exact album on Apple Music. But this artist was entirely new for me and a sampling of songs certainly added variety to my usual listening. I'm not sure its something I'll think to seek out again in the future, however.

I made it all the way through. I can't comment on the lyrics, I haven't got a clue what he's trying to say! I didn't really enjoy the timbre and tone of his vocals either, I've heard better singers doing karaoke at the Fox & Goose on a Friday night. Musically I also find it quite jarring. All in all, not the best album I've heard ;-)

A cushy bus ride across the Polish countryside, somewhere between Warsaw and Krakow, when I start thinking back to my brief introduction to Youssou’s music the previous evening. Not a lot to remember… African caterwauling comes to mind. To be honest, my head was filled with Vodka at the time, my belly full of Bigos. The polish busker playing Nirvana for tips in the Old Town was far more compelling. Fuck Russia! Nostrovia!

Not sure why it is on the list. A well known session musician but I found the album to be rather obtuse and not really worth a listen. Did not have catchy Afro or Latin beats.

Sounds like Busch Gardens music. I feel like I can't give these African Albums a fair shake since I know nothing about the culture and don't speak the language. I did like this one more than Djam Leelii. It is good but I'm rating based on my own taste.
Wow my first album of 1001! While I would not purposefully put this album on again, I did not mind listening to it at all. My favourite song was the first track, Immigrés / Bitim Rew as I found myself dancing along to it. Although this album was not a keeper for me, it was the perfect one to start with, it was fun but certainly outside of what I would normally pick!

Absolutely unqualified to say whether this is in fact excellent or merely good background listening. Suspect for me the answer is somewhere between the two.
I respect it culturally, but musically? Felt like I was stuck in an airport waiting for a flight that never boards.

This is one of those intellectual inclusions. It's a style of music that we should be aware of rather than one that is iconic or influential. And it is a pleasant there is nothing to complain about but it's not my bag. I wouldn't buy it and will probably never listen to it again. But I don't feel poorer for having listened to it unlike some of the other offerings on here. (Adelle, and Slipknot) 2
It was ok for what it is, I could have seen him at Glastonbury 92 but didn't have a clue who he was and there was artists much more to my liking to see instead. Now I've listened to him, I feel I made the right choice.

Some of the instrumentation was really cool, but when that voice starts singing, this album dies a quick death.
37/1001 Slickly produced, pleasant to listen to, and nothing really I can fault about it in those respects. Ultimately, though, this is not an album I would ever choose to listen to - which, I suppose, is the whole point of this exercise, but in this case, Immigrés does not expand on my understanding of what an album is and can be conceptually. It is just a recording of some music from a different culture.
Interesting. I got Latin and big band vibes mixed with African drums. Not something I’d listen to regularly though.

I can appreciate the cultural importance of Immigrés and what Youssou N'Dour represents, but musically, this just didn’t do much for me. The rhythms were interesting at first, but the album quickly started to feel repetitive, and I found myself zoning out more than vibing. Maybe it's one of those “you had to be there” albums—or at least understand the lyrics. I respect what he was trying to do, but overall, it didn’t connect with me.
While I appreciate that Youssou worked with Peter Gabriel on “In Your Eyes” this album isn’t it. It's great to see diverse artists and different languages on this list, but I find that they are hard to connect with. This album is not technically bad but it’s just so far from anything I like and I didn't find any part of the songs that stood out. The songs were also ridiculously long. It's getting to the point where I now dread seeing fully African language albums on here because I don't hear any memorable melodies or refrains or anything to get me into the album. Not a fan.

It's all in Senegalese ... I have no clue what is going on ... But it sounds like Animal Kingdom.
I prefer my world music to be Latin and not African. But this was enjoyable. Once. 2.5

There's plenty of other African recordings out there that I find moving, this one just didn't do much for me. Not to say I disliked anything about it, just didn't get much out of it and likely won't revisit in the future.

Didn't expect id actually finish listening to this, but it got better with some great melodies and guitar. One extra star when it's just instrumental.
This was fine to listen to, but nothing really grabbed me. Perfect for being on in the background of an unfamiliar place, but not something I would return to of my own volition.

I did not hate it, but I don’t know when I’d ever listen to it again.
So. Of all the Youssou albums I must listen to before I die, why in earth this? His voice and the occasional inspired arrangement aside, this is just space filler.
