Reviews (page 6 of 7)
É difícil avaliar uma album assim. É bom, mas não é meu estilo.
Not something I would actively choose to listen to, but very interesting to hear once. Enriching to know about this music, but I won't listen to it again.
Enjoyed this more than I expected.
Ok but not really my type of music
Nice, mellow African music. There's only 4 tracks on this album so I'm going to pick 2 tracks for best ones. BT: Immigres/Bitim Rew, Pitche Mi
Not trash, but doesn’t stand out from any other world record I’ve heard in the past
Enjoyable but wouldn't rush to listen again
Músico senegales. Ritmos
Música africana animada.
cool one
Interesting to have something different
no hate no love.
Mezclas interesantes
Good world music but not my particular taste
Great, groovy world music
I’m pretty sure the black panther score samples this
I appreciate that this list doesn’t solely focus on western music in. Never would have listened to this otherwise and it’s really interesting
Pretty good. The only standout for me was Pitchie Mi, but the others were good.
More less.
Sen verran eksotik ettei tästä kauheesti saa irti.
It’s always interesting to hear music from a different country and culture but this does nothing for me. Listening to Desi Arnez playing Babaloo has the same impact.
An okay album, i liked Immigtres/Bitim Ree the most.
The world music just doesn't do it for me.
Immigres is just another world album in the sea of world albums. Apparently, N'Dour's Wikipedia page says that he helped create a genre known as mblax. Well, this new genre certainly sounds a lot like all the other genres I've heard from Africa. I am a bit sad that i have to be so harsh on it because the musicianship itself is alright and that is the big reason why i can't justify a 1 star review here. But this album was still just really boring. It was just that kind of music that goes in one ear and out the other and the one that i just forgot about once i finished. The album itself doesn't sound bad and i get why people would enjoy it but its just not something that was able to keep my interest. Best Song: Immigres / Bitim Rew Worst Song: Taaw
Some nice rhythms and soulful passages but this is a hard album to get into and some of the tracks are long even though the record running time short.
Eh. Not for me.
Just not for me
It's not really my thing. I dont think o am the right person to give a review. Interesting though
Listenable, but ultimately irrelevant and stock sounding record.
Interesting listen. I don't think I'll listen to it again, but this was fine.
nothing special imo
2.5
What in the Putamayo World Music is this token shizzle. 2/5
It was decent fun, I wouldn’t mind coming back to. Rating: 2.5
this would make good hold music. actually I’m listening to it as I read the Wikipedia article for hold music, and it’s pretty good background for that too.
Raro pero alegre
Short n' sweet. Easy listening. 2.75 rounded down to a 2.
I didn't connect with this at all, but it didn't seem bad for what it was. Just wasn't for me.
Some interesting sounds, but a lot of repetition.
4/10
2.25. There are some cool or interesting musical moments, but the language barrier makes it hard for me to really appreciate the songs.
4 songs, 10 min each, did i listen the whole thing? no. was it good? meh
Interesting, first ever Senegalese music I have listened to. Did not blow my mind though
It was interesting to have the opportunity to listen to some non-western music. I was, however, glad it was only half an hour…
Zzz música de ascensor
Expectation: -> A percussion album. Keeping an open mind. After listening: -> This could have unlocked a new genre for me but did not. Appreciate the music, the talent. Track ranking: Pitche Immigres Badou Taaw
It's fine, just not something I'm ever going to listen to again or really appreciate.
Would listen to this at a music venue, not an album for me.
aardig
The vibes were good, but the repetition made for a somewhat boring listen IMO.
wow . thought I'd really like this. Not the case. 2 stars for effort and for what I know came after
definitely not my style not really into World Music, but its good background music
4 songs in an album means each song is a few minutes too long
01) Immigrés/Bitim Rew - 5,5 02) Pitche Mi - 6,0 03) Taaw - 5,5 04) Badou - 5,5 TOTAL: 5,63 (56/100) Current ranking: 723/851
was not really my thing, Don't want to give it a 1 cause it wasn't terrible. Just not for me.
This up made me want to sip on a Pina Colada and watch the sun set into the ocean. I can't sit here and tell you this is my music of choice. Nor would I stop and listen if I ran across this on the radio. But this wasn't to bad and I'm sure I'd have no complaints if my toes were in the sand. I'm happy he kept is relatively short too. 2.5 for making me think of the ocean. 2.5
Upbeat
I really wanted to like this more than I did. Unfortunately I found it a bit boring.
Immigres/Bitim Rew - 2.5/5 Pitche Mi - 3.5/5 Taaw - 2/5 Badou - 3/5
Ehhhh. Not bad, not for me.
The most different thing I've listened to so far on this list, good different for sure. Enriching but not something I'm going to come back to regularly sadly!
It was pretty decent, I like some of the tracks here and there. Nothing I’d go out of my way for again, but definitely an interesting listen, two stars.
Wasn't really notable but pleasant enough I suppose?
some nice tunes with some great riffs, im just not sure there enough to bring me back to this. i do kinda think that if this was in english it would be a lot more popular but as an ignorant english speaker this is less accessible to me 2.5
Album #46 Youssou N'Dour: Immigres Pretty cool album, definitely not one I ever would have listened to. The album is pretty short too, so it doesn’t outstay its welcome despite the song lengths being a bit long. Sort of falls into the same category as Vento de Maio for me, an enjoyable album, but since it’s in another language, it doesn’t have too much re-listen potential for me. While it’s on though, it is quite fun; the horns especially were good. I do wonder if there is a non-English album on this list that will truly captivate me; I feel like a lot of my enjoyment from music comes from the lyricism and being able to sing along, and since I’m a pathetic monoglot, I’m resigned to English albums. So though it isn’t bad, it’s gonna be in the 5 range for me, which isn’t a bad score per se, just means not much desire for a reslisten. Best Tracks: Immigres/ Bitim Rew, Badou, Pitche Mi Worst Track: Taaw Score out of 10: 5.5
I couldn't find this exact album on Apple Music. But this artist was entirely new for me and a sampling of songs certainly added variety to my usual listening. I'm not sure its something I'll think to seek out again in the future, however.
A music
Nah
2.5 Fine, very much not my thing.
I made it all the way through. I can't comment on the lyrics, I haven't got a clue what he's trying to say! I didn't really enjoy the timbre and tone of his vocals either, I've heard better singers doing karaoke at the Fox & Goose on a Friday night. Musically I also find it quite jarring. All in all, not the best album I've heard ;-)
Might have been a 3 if I could understand it.
Soporific
Soulful, melodic, energetic, rhythmic, good music.
I couldn't really get on with this album. Despite it only being about 35 minutes long, I was counting down the minutes until it ended.
Two
i can respect it, but i can't sincerely love it
Extremely tame, in my opinion. Nothing new or exciting that made this an enjoyable listen.
Not my thing
Not a bad listen, but I won’t be revisiting.
It's OK, I don't understand it, but I didn't hate it.
Not really my thing
2- Stars (4/15)
7/10 Favourite: Pitche mi Least Favourite: Badou
Ist mir etwas zu unruhig.
Not really my thing but it was over quickly enough
Really not my thing. Might be better live, but not too listen to on an album.
Hm, hat mich jetzt nicht so angesprochen. Halt viel afrikanisches Klimm-Bimm.....
OK, I tried, but World Music is generally not for me. 2/5
It was interesting but definately not for me.
Just not my taste in music
Interesting. Ended up skipping ahead on most songs.
Litt kjedelig kanskje?
Pretty boring….thought I was listening to the same song throughout the whole album
1988. Interesting sounding Senegalese album that carried good beats
Noty style but soothing
A cushy bus ride across the Polish countryside, somewhere between Warsaw and Krakow, when I start thinking back to my brief introduction to Youssou’s music the previous evening. Not a lot to remember… African caterwauling comes to mind. To be honest, my head was filled with Vodka at the time, my belly full of Bigos. The polish busker playing Nirvana for tips in the Old Town was far more compelling. Fuck Russia! Nostrovia!
Would it be awful to say it’s quite pleasant? However, not anything I’d listen to again.
World music. As "world music" as that genre comes. It's not bad. But not something I'll be looking to listen to again. Not my cup of tea. Honestly closer to a 2.5 for me.
# Album Name: Immigres # Artist: Youssou N'Dour # Rating: 2/5 # Comments: Not for me. Im not gona lie. A lot of world music doesnt hit the spot for me. This goes in that bucket. Wasnt offensive. Just OK for background and thats it. # Top Tunes: None # Would I listen to it again? No
Not sure why it is on the list. A well known session musician but I found the album to be rather obtuse and not really worth a listen. Did not have catchy Afro or Latin beats.
Really? Next.
Not for me
podobaly im sie instrumenty
I appreciate the musicianship.
it's fine. not a must listen for me. also 80's... cmon
I didn't really like it that much.
Not tor me
Not really my thing
Lively and upbeat. Just the right amount of Afro-pop to hold me until I die.
Nothing for me here
Sounds like Busch Gardens music. I feel like I can't give these African Albums a fair shake since I know nothing about the culture and don't speak the language. I did like this one more than Djam Leelii. It is good but I'm rating based on my own taste.
Wow my first album of 1001! While I would not purposefully put this album on again, I did not mind listening to it at all. My favourite song was the first track, Immigrés / Bitim Rew as I found myself dancing along to it. Although this album was not a keeper for me, it was the perfect one to start with, it was fun but certainly outside of what I would normally pick!
Very good but not my thing.
Starts strong, ends mid. I could do without the middle. I’ll listen to that first track any day.
Didn’t give me what I wanted
This reminded me a bit of the music we’ve been dancing to at Zumba class. 2.5 rounded down.
Liked track 2 but not the rest. Not a style I care for much.
Eh
At least it was short
4/10 - it wasn’t bad but I don’t plan on relistening to this anytime soon
Not great
Absolutely unqualified to say whether this is in fact excellent or merely good background listening. Suspect for me the answer is somewhere between the two.
I respect it culturally, but musically? Felt like I was stuck in an airport waiting for a flight that never boards.
It’s nice I get it, I’m just not moved by it won’t listen again
This is one of those intellectual inclusions. It's a style of music that we should be aware of rather than one that is iconic or influential. And it is a pleasant there is nothing to complain about but it's not my bag. I wouldn't buy it and will probably never listen to it again. But I don't feel poorer for having listened to it unlike some of the other offerings on here. (Adelle, and Slipknot) 2
It was ok for what it is, I could have seen him at Glastonbury 92 but didn't have a clue who he was and there was artists much more to my liking to see instead. Now I've listened to him, I feel I made the right choice.
Ok
Probably nice but not my thing.
Mid. Guess this list needed some Africadabra
Some of the instrumentation was really cool, but when that voice starts singing, this album dies a quick death.
37/1001 Slickly produced, pleasant to listen to, and nothing really I can fault about it in those respects. Ultimately, though, this is not an album I would ever choose to listen to - which, I suppose, is the whole point of this exercise, but in this case, Immigrés does not expand on my understanding of what an album is and can be conceptually. It is just a recording of some music from a different culture.
Interesting. I got Latin and big band vibes mixed with African drums. Not something I’d listen to regularly though.
2.0
Definitely not my cup of tea, but it was pretty interesting to hear something that I've never heard in life! I can see why it would be influential but again it's just not for me!
Not my type, and not that good.
Sounds exactly as what the term ‘world music’ envisages.
Solid international album listened to by a classless fuck that has no taste for international music
just not my bag
I can appreciate the cultural importance of Immigrés and what Youssou N'Dour represents, but musically, this just didn’t do much for me. The rhythms were interesting at first, but the album quickly started to feel repetitive, and I found myself zoning out more than vibing. Maybe it's one of those “you had to be there” albums—or at least understand the lyrics. I respect what he was trying to do, but overall, it didn’t connect with me.
While I appreciate that Youssou worked with Peter Gabriel on “In Your Eyes” this album isn’t it. It's great to see diverse artists and different languages on this list, but I find that they are hard to connect with. This album is not technically bad but it’s just so far from anything I like and I didn't find any part of the songs that stood out. The songs were also ridiculously long. It's getting to the point where I now dread seeing fully African language albums on here because I don't hear any memorable melodies or refrains or anything to get me into the album. Not a fan.
Gear: Hifiman Arya Artwork: 🟧😁🪘 Production: 🤯🙂👌 Music: 🪘🎸🎺🌍💡 Rating: 🌞🌞(🌞)/5
It's all in Senegalese ... I have no clue what is going on ... But it sounds like Animal Kingdom.
I prefer my world music to be Latin and not African. But this was enjoyable. Once. 2.5
Not my cup of tea but glad to have my listening expanded.
There's plenty of other African recordings out there that I find moving, this one just didn't do much for me. Not to say I disliked anything about it, just didn't get much out of it and likely won't revisit in the future.
Kid A was een 2. Alleen How to disappear Completely sprak me echt aan Ik hou niet van Frans, maar wel goeie vibes
Didn't expect id actually finish listening to this, but it got better with some great melodies and guitar. One extra star when it's just instrumental.
This was fine to listen to, but nothing really grabbed me. Perfect for being on in the background of an unfamiliar place, but not something I would return to of my own volition.
Oh. Was excited about this but didn’t deliver. Don’t really know why.
Not my thing
not something i would usual listen to but i enjoyed it. the songs kind of all sounded the same to me but im not sure if thats because im not listening attentively enough
World, 1984 -> 2
Alright like
That's about what I expected.
World music
Meh
Senegalesiske popslaskere, lidt svært at vurdere, men god nok stemning
I did not hate it, but I don’t know when I’d ever listen to it again.
So. Of all the Youssou albums I must listen to before I die, why in earth this? His voice and the occasional inspired arrangement aside, this is just space filler.
Might be good live?
Much too ethnic
Mehh
I like African vibes but this was a bit rubbish
Absolutely fine but no impact on me.
Not bad
Felt like a Mexican taxi driver
Niet echt boeiend, ook niet heel slecht
This is OK ish.
Wish I could understand this.
Not really for me
Awful
Listened Before? N Pretty neat African beats. Not really my style but I didn't hate it. Added to Library? N Songs added to playlist: Immigres
No not my thing.
This was some pretty decent world music all things considered. I enjoyed listening to it all the way through yet still didn’t find it to be something worth revisiting. Compared to the other world music this was definitely one of the better albums. 4.3/10
2 - I don't really remember anything about the album, if I'm being honest. It kinda went in one ear and out the other.
Bouncy stuff.
Still not a world music fan
Not for me
Another album expertly played that just ain't for me.
I appreciate the variety that this album brings to the list. I don't see this going into my playlist rotation, but a fine entry none the less
That was entirely forgetful and pretty disappointing. The songs were ok. 2/5.
Pleasant enough. Was in the background while working, so maybe needed more focus but didn't really hook me in.
Mmm…nice background music
Well, that was... Something. I'm not sure what it was but it was definitely something. I'm honestly unsure how to rate this. I didn't, on any level, enjoy listening to this. But I also didn't hate it on any level. I think, at the end of the day, the synths were just too much for me, dropping the rating from a "I don't know" 3-star to a "no thank you" 2-star rating.
Irgendwie immer das gleiche...
Musically I thought it was fine but N’Dours vocals were grating and I didn’t care for it. It’s a 3 if it’s an instrumental but the vocals drag this to a 2
I enjoyed almost all of it
Every song was definitely too long. I enjoyed it, but it felt repetitive. It was a nice change compared to the rest of the albums though.
With all respect, I didn't enjoy this 4 long songs album.
I didn't hate this album but it really tried my patience. The songs were so long! Before I made it to about the half-way point of each song I was growing bored and I got everything I was going to get out of the song.
Not terrible. Not great.
Interestinf
Never heard this type of music before. Definitely a new experience.
Intresting first foreign language album, was like african reaggae jazz
Not a fave. Couple good songs 4/10
I know Youssou N'Dour from other songs. This is a African style and sounds like world music. I don't like it very much.
Sounds nice enough but not worthy of a place on this list.
As Tim said, it's musically quite fun and good background music, but you lose a lot by not being able to understand the lyrics. I think it's not in French that much, and mostly in Wolof, which is totally incomprehensible to me. Still amuses me that 20 years of all time classics equals four songs. 2/5
I don't know much about African music, so I've never heard of this album or artist before (I just learned that he did the percussion on Paul Simon's "Diamonds on the Soles of Her Shoes," so shame on me, because I love that album). I had pretty high hopes for this album based on what I'd read, but this fell pretty flat for me. The percussion was really good, but that was the only interesting thing about this album. The songs were all pretty long, and none of them really went anywhere. This album wasn't bad, but it certainly wasn't good. I get that Youssou is pretty influential, especially in Senegal, but I'm still not sure why this album is on the list.
The album was ok to have in the background. However, in contrast with other African albums we have listened to here, I could not appreciate the sound performed on this one. It may be due to not being used to it, something that does not prevent me from saying it is good music.
Didn't love the African style but not awful. 1.8/5
Although I liked the music itself, I can't resemble the spark. Maybe just there isn't any. 2.5/5.
Looks like this is, more or less, the only type of non Western music allowed here. As far as I am concerned, I am happy to sample this genre from time to time, but I can't say I love it. I also fail to detect the special spice here, but then again, what do I know.
I didn't turn it off but it wasn't my thing.
Not for me. Didn't connect with it. Didn't really need to turn it off, either.
Ok
mmm I have to be in a very specific mood to enjoy this
Yeah, better than most of the international offerings on this list but that doesn’t mean I’m going to listen to it again. Maybe the shortest album on the list - that’ll get it a bonus star.
Meh
Not my jam
Honestly a pleasant listen. Had it on while working and it was never distracting. Kinda kept me in a zone. Probably won’t listen again, though.
I have no idea what's going on, but it's got a nice beat.
Often felt disjointed and wouldn’t allow me to get properly into it. One of those that feels like it was thrown in to beef up that “World” category.
I went in with an open mind and it wasn’t too bad until the vocals came in, as instrumentals these wouldn’t be bad but being the pale Caucasian b#tch I am I can’t get down with this
That was interesting for first two minutes, something way different than usual. Then extremely repetitive.
2-3
some cool rhythms and some guitar, some nice things
Oh come on, simply don't believe those giving this 4 or 5 stars. not completely unlistenable but was actively trying to block the vocals out 1.5
Yeah this is another “whatever” international album. I have no I’ll feelings toward this album except that I was bored by it and was glad it was only 34 minutes. In other news: I finally connected the dots that war pigs on the pigs no more album was a cover and I realized that it’s basically the same as the original but not as meaty so that album takes a hit cuz I dislike covers that are basically a copy of the original. It’s one of those where you discover you only like the sound of it because it’s near identical to the original that you also like.
Nice bit couldn't get too excited.
"20 years of all-time classics"... distilled down to 4 tracks, eh? It's all fine, decent enough African/World music, but nothing particularly grabbed out at me.
Not for me. Nice background but not much.
Not available
the rhythms are a bit choppy if you are not in a 4/4 mood
Poor production:Tinny, almost no low end, so you only hear the slap on the percussion, the top of the vocal range, the high horn, guitar, keys notes; it sounds like I’m listening to this on cheap headphones someone took out of their ear to talk to me. It distracts from the actual music, which seems like I’d like more, but it’s hard to say bc this is my first listen
Um, I'm not sure what this is all about.
Hmmmmmmmm. Couldn’t dig this at all. I understand vaguely why some people might like to hear these weird musings but I’ll avoid for just now. Not my gig at all.
It was good but very long and repetitive songs.
LOL, I complain that this list is too US/UK-centric but then I get a little world music and I'm like "meh..."
Was not a huge fan. There was not anything that grabbed me
I really don’t have much to say about this. It was alright, but nothing really caught my attention about it.
I've thoroughly enjoyed some great world music albums during this little exercise. That's been one of the joys from listening to over half of the albums appearing on the list. Unfortunately, this isn't one of the better world music albums listed. Maybe I just expected more after getting so many gems.
I respect it
Thie suffers from one of the pervasive problems of 'world music' - the melodies are so subserviant to the rhythm that they may as well not exist. And if you do fight through the almost impenatrable layers of percussion to get to the tunes they are not worth the effort.
p527. 1984. 2 stars Well done of its kind but left me cold. Bonus star for the guitar work of Mamadou "Jimi" Mbaye.
The Queen's dead, mate
Decent album, but I feel it was below average for the afro-pop I have listened to on this list so far. 2.5/5
Nah - not for me. The voice didn't work for me on this album.
Esperava mais.
African music - not for me. 2 stars
Ikkje spesielt interessant
This was fine. 2 stars.
Musical syncretism. I'm sure a lot of people will rightfully find something compelling herein.
“Moving” muzika. Slažen se
Didn't enjoy it as much as some of his others.
boring
Interesting but very niche
Not great
Interesting rhythms. Not into the vocals.
Definitely mixed feelings on this one. This is definitely different from my usual listening. Overall, it's not too bad. The instruments are quite good at times but sometimes I found myself getting bored with the length of these tracks. I didn't really care for the vocals either, not because I didn't understand the language but just the overall style. I hate to shit on this album too much because it seems like something I'm just not accustomed to. I can't lie and say that I really enjoyed it though.
Not for me
ethnic music but doesn't really sound too interesting
5/10
Don't like it
I didn't like it very much, but it was cool to hear something totally different, and it made perfectly fine background music while I was playing a board game tonight.
Not on my music streamer. First time that's happened. Boo.
Not really my jam
First listen. Interesting African music. I did enjoy it quite a bit after listening to it all day. Very strong 2/5.
cool music but whiny vocals!
Meh
Not bad, but not interesting.
Eh. Probably innovative or soemthing. Not for me.
first song is good and warm but nothing impressive. Female vocals are fine. Didn't care for the chill song Pitche Mi. I understand this is a good live performance feel but I'm just not engaged.
not really into this. second and third song were nice.
Youssou N'Dour's voice is familiar to me through his work with Peter Gabriel on various albums and live performances. The music is mostly okay. I wasn't sure how to rate this album, so I listened again. At almost the same spot in the third track out of four, I checked to see how long until the album was done. There are a few points in the last two tracks where I'm done listening. I guess that makes this a 2.
idk i can’t give a good rating bc it’s just not my fav genre
Technically an EP, ain't it
I wouldnt mind this if I was walking past the West Holts Stage at Glasto.
Nothing dislikeable but forgettable background noise for me
First track is great. The rest is ok. Tough for Western ears to get. One star for the musicianship + one star for my white guilt.
2/5 Tribal sounds, but not my cup of tea

Not my cup of tea
Not really enjoying this music
Very niche. Listened only to a couple of tracks, which I found inaccessible. I’m sure it has its audience. I’m just not part of it.
sorry prince but no
No, sorry. It's not to my taste. 1 star...
In my humble opinion it was added just because of cultural diversity, I just really don't like the sound of this album
Not my vibe wouldn't listen to it again 1.7/10
I listened to this whole album and honestly don't have much to say about it at all. I'm thankful to hear new music from artists and cultures I've never heard music from, but this album left no positive or negative impression on me. It's a lukewarm 3/10. I will likely forget this by lunch today.
