Immigrés

One of the joys of this album list is that it gets me to listen to things of which I was completely unaware, and have no preconceptions. This was such an album. I enjoyed it but am not sure I'd listen again - the sections I really enjoyed started to become repetitive quite quickly, and I am not sure if my inability to understand the lyrics setracts from my enjoyment. Overall, I'm glad to have found "something new"

Bueno! Al fin un álbum que no es ni británico ni estadounidense, porque quien escribió este libro pareciera que piensa que lo único bueno es la música de esos países y es más que obvio que música buena hay en cualquier lado del mundo y ninguna es mejor que otra. Es bueno este disco, es distinto, y nos fuimos por un rato fuera del rock y del pop, y eso es importantísimo.

There are far too few non-western artists on this list, so I was already feeling good about this album, just to see it here. But this is absolutely not just a token of diversity meant to appease. Rather, this is a testament to the universal language of music, which I hope will open the eyes and ears of listeners touring this list. I personally enjoyed the vibrant vocals and horns, the hypnotic drum chorus, and the iterative verse-over-verse permutations of the opening track 'Immigres/Bitim Rew' and the closing track 'Badou'. The central two tracks are much more mellow, but similarly rich in their musical texture. This is a wonderful introduction to the music of Senegal and I look forward to exploring the artists and albums of that country and region further; with or without this list's recommendations.

So exotic and cool. It's a pleasure to mix up my music listening and get into some afro beats.

World spanning vocals and grooves equally pacific, though not as astonishing as he'd create later on.

Was really nice to have some Afrobeats playing as I tried to bake a cake yesterday afternoon. Some lovely stuff on here. Always happy to listen to Youssou.

A fun, vibrant LP - the longer track lengths and relative lack of vocals means this one falls into the background music category a bit, but not in a negative way.

Enjoyable. It's not a style I'm familiar with, but this was a good listen.

Giving this a fairly safe 3 stars and thought it would be great as bkg music in a film but as for me listening to it over and over, unlikely.

"World music" is a dreadful term for various reasons, and it's also something that, frankly, I don't really have much experience with. As such I don't really know what I think about this cos I'm not really sure how to respond to it; I'm giving it three stars cos that seems fair, I did find it pleasing to listen to.

Again, it's amazing how difficult it is to judge music when I know so little about the history, culture, and language from which it was derived. However, this was pretty jammy. It reminded me a lot of when I used to play in the high school jazz band - it has that kind of free-formy vibe. Also, I'm real impressed with the producing and engineering. There is a lot going on, but all the "stuff" came through crisp. Really dug it.

Timeless album that certainly doesn't sound like its from 1984, and holds up really well today. I like how compact this album is, only 4 songs, no fat. I also like the joyous vibe from this album, really chill guitar especially on Pitche Mi and the brass isn't in your face like some of his contemporaries, eg Hugh Masakela and Fela Kuti.

Look I can appreciate it—it was interesting—but I’d say not my cup of tea.

Nada malo como disco de Afro-Pop, incluso sin ser la música que acostumbro oír me pudo parecer entretenida y hasta mejor que lo de los Zombies que no muerden que oímos hace algunos meses. Conocía el nombre de Youssou porque participa en un tributo a Lennon en el que hace su version de 'Jealous Guy' que es bastante buena.

Really struggled with this one. Loved the beats and the melodies but because I didn’t understand the lyrics I felt I was missing out on half the song. Also felt that the tracks were too long, again if I knew what the subject was or what they were singing about it may have made more sense.

Nope. This is not for me. For those of y'all who like this sort of authenticity, good for you. However, including this banal collection of whatever ethnic drumming/fluting/etc. on this list is yawn-yawn. Better than Paul Simon doing the same though. Still, only 2 "but somewhat better than Paul Simon" stars.

Not my thing... Too repetitive and droning. Points for keeping it short. Variety is important to me, within an album and especially within a song. At first you might think "oh this is interesting" but if you're really LISTENING to this, and not just having it on in the background, your brain might go a bit numb. Likely never listening to this again, it's a no from me.

Not really my jam, but glad to hear new sounds to me. Would be happy to come across this while sunning boat side, but I can't recall exactly what I've heard only just a few hours ago. 2-3 rats.

On the plus side, the rhythmic interplay on this record is interesting and the musicianship is excellent. On the minus side, the vocals sound like they are just drifting over the music without any organic connection and the songs have little harmonic movement, making them seem like they are going in circles.

It’s always interesting to hear music from a different country and culture but this does nothing for me. Listening to Desi Arnez playing Babaloo has the same impact.

Ik sta hier normaalgesproken op geen enkele manier om te springen maar zo tijdens het werk is dit best een prima album om een keer aan te hebben staan. Zeker na die onzin van zojuist (Kapitein Rundshart). Moet ik er een cijfer op plakken (en zoals we inmiddels weten is dat wel onderdeel van het bijna dagelijkse luisterritueel) dan zit dit voor mij ergens tussen de 2 en 3. Ik denk eigenlijk dat een 2 dan toch het meest realistisch is.

The world music just doesn't do it for me.

Immigres is just another world album in the sea of world albums. Apparently, N'Dour's Wikipedia page says that he helped create a genre known as mblax. Well, this new genre certainly sounds a lot like all the other genres I've heard from Africa. I am a bit sad that i have to be so harsh on it because the musicianship itself is alright and that is the big reason why i can't justify a 1 star review here. But this album was still just really boring. It was just that kind of music that goes in one ear and out the other and the one that i just forgot about once i finished. The album itself doesn't sound bad and i get why people would enjoy it but its just not something that was able to keep my interest. Best Song: Immigres / Bitim Rew Worst Song: Taaw

This up made me want to sip on a Pina Colada and watch the sun set into the ocean. I can't sit here and tell you this is my music of choice. Nor would I stop and listen if I ran across this on the radio. But this wasn't to bad and I'm sure I'd have no complaints if my toes were in the sand. I'm happy he kept is relatively short too. 2.5 for making me think of the ocean. 2.5

Album #46 Youssou N'Dour: Immigres Pretty cool album, definitely not one I ever would have listened to. The album is pretty short too, so it doesn’t outstay its welcome despite the song lengths being a bit long. Sort of falls into the same category as Vento de Maio for me, an enjoyable album, but since it’s in another language, it doesn’t have too much re-listen potential for me. While it’s on though, it is quite fun; the horns especially were good. I do wonder if there is a non-English album on this list that will truly captivate me; I feel like a lot of my enjoyment from music comes from the lyricism and being able to sing along, and since I’m a pathetic monoglot, I’m resigned to English albums. So though it isn’t bad, it’s gonna be in the 5 range for me, which isn’t a bad score per se, just means not much desire for a reslisten. Best Tracks: Immigres/ Bitim Rew, Badou, Pitche Mi Worst Track: Taaw Score out of 10: 5.5

I couldn't find this exact album on Apple Music. But this artist was entirely new for me and a sampling of songs certainly added variety to my usual listening. I'm not sure its something I'll think to seek out again in the future, however.

I made it all the way through. I can't comment on the lyrics, I haven't got a clue what he's trying to say! I didn't really enjoy the timbre and tone of his vocals either, I've heard better singers doing karaoke at the Fox & Goose on a Friday night. Musically I also find it quite jarring. All in all, not the best album I've heard ;-)

A cushy bus ride across the Polish countryside, somewhere between Warsaw and Krakow, when I start thinking back to my brief introduction to Youssou’s music the previous evening. Not a lot to remember… African caterwauling comes to mind. To be honest, my head was filled with Vodka at the time, my belly full of Bigos. The polish busker playing Nirvana for tips in the Old Town was far more compelling. Fuck Russia! Nostrovia!

Would it be awful to say it’s quite pleasant? However, not anything I’d listen to again.

World music. As "world music" as that genre comes. It's not bad. But not something I'll be looking to listen to again. Not my cup of tea. Honestly closer to a 2.5 for me.

Immigrés ist tief im senegalesischen Mbalax verwurzelt, doch die Umsetzung wirkt unausgewogen. Die dominanten Synthesizer überlagern oft die traditionellen Rhythmen und lassen die kulturelle Tiefe verblassen. Wow my first album of 1001! While I would not purposefully put this album on again, I did not mind listening to it at all. My favourite song was the first track, Immigrés / Bitim Rew as I found myself dancing along to it. Although this album was not a keeper for me, it was the perfect one to start with, it was fun but certainly outside of what I would normally pick!

And it is a pleasant there is nothing to complain about but it's not my bag. I wouldn't buy it and will probably never listen to it again. Some of the instrumentation was really cool, but when that voice starts singing, this album dies a quick death.

37/1001 Slickly produced, pleasant to listen to, and nothing really I can fault about it in those respects. Ultimately, though, this is not an album I would ever choose to listen to - which, I suppose, is the whole point of this exercise, but in this case, Immigrés does not expand on my understanding of what an album is and can be conceptually. It is just a recording of some music from a different culture.

I can appreciate the cultural importance of Immigrés and what Youssou N'Dour represents, but musically, this just didn’t do much for me. The rhythms were interesting at first, but the album quickly started to feel repetitive, and I found myself zoning out more than vibing. Maybe it's one of those “you had to be there” albums—or at least understand the lyrics. I respect what he was trying to do, but overall, it didn’t connect with me.

While I appreciate that Youssou worked with Peter Gabriel on “In Your Eyes” this album isn’t it. It's great to see diverse artists and different languages on this list, but I find that they are hard to connect with. This album is not technically bad but it’s just so far from anything I like and I didn't find any part of the songs that stood out. The songs were also ridiculously long. It's getting to the point where I now dread seeing fully African language albums on here because I don't hear any memorable melodies or refrains or anything to get me into the album. Not a fan.

There's plenty of other African recordings out there that I find moving, this one just didn't do much for me. Not to say I disliked anything about it, just didn't get much out of it and likely won't revisit in the future.

Dit zijn toch de albums waar ik nieuwsgierig naar ben. Wat valt er buiten het bekende terrein te ontdekken? Tegelijk merk ik dat ik best wel moet wennen aan de zang en de rommelige opzet. Leuk om eens mee te pakken, maar plezier beleef ik er niet aan.

Onderhoudend stukje wereldmuziek. Veel typische percussie en toeters, lekker pielend gitaartje er doorheen. Ik ken hier allemaal te weinig van om het echt op waarde te kunnen schatten. Het is van die muziek die op zondagochtend in het muziekgebouw aan t IJ wordt gespeeld en uitgezonden op een themakanaal van de NPO. Prima dat het er is, ik heb er ook geen probleem mee dat het in onze snoblijst staat. Leuk om een keer te horen, maar daar blijft het ook bij.

This was some pretty decent world music all things considered. I enjoyed listening to it all the way through yet still didn’t find it to be something worth revisiting. Compared to the other world music this was definitely one of the better albums. 4.3/10

Well, that was... Something. I'm not sure what it was but it was definitely something. I'm honestly unsure how to rate this. I didn't, on any level, enjoy listening to this. But I also didn't hate it on any level. I think, at the end of the day, the synths were just too much for me, dropping the rating from a "I don't know" 3-star to a "no thank you" 2-star rating.

Every song was definitely too long. I enjoyed it, but it felt repetitive. It was a nice change compared to the rest of the albums though.

With all respect, I didn't enjoy this 4 long songs album.

I didn't hate this album but it really tried my patience. The songs were so long! Before I made it to about the half-way point of each song I was growing bored and I got everything I was going to get out of the song.

I know Youssou N'Dour from other songs. This is a African style and sounds like world music. I don't like it very much.

As Tim said, it's musically quite fun and good background music, but you lose a lot by not being able to understand the lyrics. I think it's not in French that much, and mostly in Wolof, which is totally incomprehensible to me. Still amuses me that 20 years of all time classics equals four songs. 2/5

I don't know much about African music, so I've never heard of this album or artist before (I just learned that he did the percussion on Paul Simon's "Diamonds on the Soles of Her Shoes," so shame on me, because I love that album). I had pretty high hopes for this album based on what I'd read, but this fell pretty flat for me. The percussion was really good, but that was the only interesting thing about this album. The songs were all pretty long, and none of them really went anywhere. This album wasn't bad, but it certainly wasn't good. I get that Youssou is pretty influential, especially in Senegal, but I'm still not sure why this album is on the list.

The album was ok to have in the background. However, in contrast with other African albums we have listened to here, I could not appreciate the sound performed on this one. It may be due to not being used to it, something that does not prevent me from saying it is good music.

Looks like this is, more or less, the only type of non Western music allowed here. As far as I am concerned, I am happy to sample this genre from time to time, but I can't say I love it. I also fail to detect the special spice here, but then again, what do I know.

Honestly a pleasant listen. Had it on while working and it was never distracting. Kinda kept me in a zone. Probably won’t listen again, though.

I have no idea what's going on, but it's got a nice beat.

Often felt disjointed and wouldn’t allow me to get properly into it. One of those that feels like it was thrown in to beef up that “World” category.

I went in with an open mind and it wasn’t too bad until the vocals came in, as instrumentals these wouldn’t be bad but being the pale Caucasian b#tch I am I can’t get down with this
