Reviews (page 7 of 13)
Excellent!! Rock & Roll, Garage, Blues, hell even Folk and Country mixed together to create a bevy of iconic songs. 4.5/5
I say this a lot. Great album, not my favorite by them. But really, doesn't all but one of their albums fit that bill? Need to stop saying that. End of the day, great album.
Dang, that jam at the end of “Loving Cup”! Delicious! I like how you feel like your in a garage with these guys, listening to them play. I never listened to whole Stones albums before this, and I’m grateful!
No highlights. Literally can't remember a single tune. But it was a fun time the whole thing through! Charisma and energy and lots of participants (somewhat) well-wrangled. Haven't had that experience since one of my first albums on this, from the Clash.
The Rolling Stones, nothing can go wrong.
Bit bloated but the highlights are special l. Loving Cup, Shine a Light, Let It Loose.
Better than I thought. I hated the stones
first listen stereotypical background music rock and roll
Somehow the Rolling Stones always sound like they are in an extended jam session, and this album is the epitome of this. Perhaps that is one reason why they are one of the greatest live acts ever. This is not their best album, but it is a good sample of less well known Stones music. Most people will only know Tumbling Dice from this.
This was good. I know there's a lot of history/story to this album.
Unknown band
A seminal piece of ‘70s rock this is The Stones crowning moment. Mixing their blues rock with that undeniable swag. It is a too to bottom great piece and one even casual fans can enjoy.
Best of what they do. Bluesy and raw.
Fijne plaat! Die mondharmonica is leuk. Lekker bluesy.
Strong album, not quite five stars
I like Let it Bleed more.
Fun classic rock with a lot folk influence and some jazz. Definitely plenty of material to listen to in this album.
I actually really liked this album, some country/blues mixed with brass and rock super well. Would never guess it’s a British rock group at all. It sounds like I’m listening to a road-trip through the countryside, while drinking, and stopping at small towns to get wasted. Ups, downs, and in-betweens.
Pretty good, a bit too repetitive
There are the big four records of the Stones (Beggars Banquet, Let It Bleed, Sticky Fingers & Exile On Main St.) and this one is like the Beatle's White Album. And for me that means it's a bit too long and the real fans adore it. I like it. It's rock 'n roll and the band really feels like they know what they're doing at this stage. They're pulling off every genre within the Stone's repertoire. It's a really good album, but I'll let other persuade me why it would be their best, because I can't hear it (yet)
The victory lap in a golden race, Exile on Main Street is generally considered by most music fans as the last all time great Rolling Stones album; the one with the most mythical status, a most gargantuan collection of songs so bountiful it had to be split into two records. Here is where the band were at their most boisterous, most rollicking like true outlaws. There are moments where they could have veered down a strange path but always find a way to get back up to where they excelled best. It can't all be loved, which is what makes it still appealing fifty years on. Essential listening. Favorites: Rocks Off, Shake Your Hips, Tumbling Dice, Sweet Virginia, Torn and Frayed, Loving Cup, Happy, Let It Loose, All Down the Line, Shine a Light.
This was a fairly difficult album to rate. Absolutely enjoyed listening to it and there were no duds on the entire, nearly two hour long, album. That's impressive. But nothing really stood out either. I didn't "fave" any individual songs, but did "fave" the entire album so maybe that explains how I feel about it better than I can express. I'm going to assume that was intended so even though it's probably a 3.5 star album for me, I'll give it the benefit of doubt and push it up half a star.
Will listen to later.
Love this album by the stones. I’d call it their magnum opus. It’s pretty long but none of the songs really drag on. The lyrics are a bit stronger and more unique than their bluesy other albums. I could listen to this album all the time. 8.4/10
Cool as
I enjoyed this album. This definitely was a more blues centric album which explored some exciting themes. Is it my favorite album on this list? No, but I think it is a contender.
Might have liked this more than 'Sticky Fingers' but I will have to listen again to figure that out for sure. Great album from the Stones, give it a listen if you haven't
Man, this is a huge album, not just because it's just under 2 hours of 4 minute rock and roll hits, but because it's kind of rock and roll distilled. Not a huge amount of Stones hits but an album of immeasurable quality.
I really didn't get how going back to traditional roots and blues rock made this a top Rolling Stones album. I wasn't into this lof-fi production, specifically the vocals being so hard to hear. Exile on Main St. really clicked on the second half however, especially with the bass. I understood the more light-hearted and passionate take this was approaching. It modernizes old rock-'n'-roll tropes even if not all of it is in my wheelhouse.
I'm not sure I've ever listened to a Rolling Stones album start to finish, so this was a good start! Firstly, I was surprise how much poo came up in this album but overall I thought it was a great listen. I drove to it which was definitely a good vibe. Sweet Virginia was my fave - I think there was a good metaphor in there about just getting on with it and wiping the shit of your shoe. Turd on the Run was a good follow-up I guess. Some of the 12 bar blues ones didn't do much for me. BUT overall this was great
This was a goodun, proper. Good to hear some Rolling Stones that isn't the classic bangers
Yep. The Rolling Stones!
Love how bluesy this is.
didn't know many of these tunes so I didn't expect much, but this is way cooler than most Rolling Stones I do know...fully bluesy cool without too much pop or cheese. 4.5 for me, but can't round up
The fourth Rolling Stones album we got so far. This one's a lot bluesier than the previous ones. It's quite good, although not amazing. It would surely be better if they'd cut some of the less exciting tracks, as the album is very long. Giving this 3.5 stars but rounding up because it's better than the previous album I listened to today and gave 3 stars.
Like an overused toilet brush going in for one more dunk and somehow, against all odds clearing out the bowl.
Stones will always be great
Huh it's considered one of their best works, and best albums ever. Rocks-off had some nice distorted section and horns piece. Liked Sweet Virginia backing singing and sax. ZZ top feel to Ventilator Blues opening guitar and Shake Your Hips. VB is a good vibe with that buiding sax and brass. Stop Breaking Down very like Led Zeppelin! Wailing, baby, hard guitar and harmonica. Great sound.
Love the Stones and am always impressed by the breadth of their catalog. I hadn't heard most of this. There's some stuff that I really wasn't expecting. The 'Shake Your Hips' track sounds a lot like La Grange (?) by ZZTop. Rocks Off is great. Rip this joint sounds like a loud throwback to some 50's dance music. Mostly this is great. Put it on in the background and got busy (doing work). Great tempo and rhythm, also that jagger...what is it about that jagger...?
Classic stones but not single heavy.
I am surprised it took me this long to get a Rolling Stones album. I was not familiar with the album by name and surprisingly I was not familiar with many of the songs. After listening to the album, I cannot say that I have desire to go back and listen to it again, nor can I point to one song and say that someone should listen to this particular song. This album does not have any of the mega hits that the Stones are known for, which is fine but something to note. The album had more several country songs in addition to the blues and rock and roll songs. The second half of the album is better than the first. The album is a little long, close to 70 minutes. The album is better than some of the 3s that I have given. It should probably be a high 3, but I will round it up.
Not familiar with any of these tracks before, but I'm having a good time with this album. Incomprehensible hollering and then a piano and a guitar do something wonderful. Highlights are Tumbling Dice, Torn and Frayed, and Ventilator Blues.
Very good
It's a very well crafted album. Lots of Rolling Stone original music that inspired other musicians.
Yup, they are still good...
4/5 this is a nice one!
i know this album very well, as a long time stones fan, and have also seen the great documentary movie that covers its creation. this is an iconic sones album and also kind of marks a transition of style / maturity in the stones’ very substantial journey. this one is right up there with their best and as a double album was probably quite a statement at the time.
Essentially, rock n roll as a double album. I dig it.
I ignored this album growing up outside of the singles (at least compared to other Stones albums). Dig it a lot Fav tracks: Sweet Virginia, Tumbling Dice,
Nelonen.
Perhaps the Stones most consistent album across 18 tracks, so a very solid four stars. But there's no track here that would get in a Stones top tent. So four stars.
Okay, finally, listened enough of it... Not my taste, but not as bad as i thought ;) Good variety, but not a fan of the overall sound..
Not the Stones' best work, but nevertheless a great album and good example of the 60's sound.
Liked Torn and Frayed,
7/10
A really good blues album that's missing anything really memorable. Songs are good but not 'next level' like some other Stones stuff
One of my favourite Stones albums - loose and raucous.
Surprisingly liked this more than the "classic" stones sound - probably because this sounds more raw and authentic before they became icons.
The Stones most coherent album. This album is widely regarded one of the greatest rock albums of all time and I agree to an extent. This album distills rock down into its necessary elements and delivers it in a soul/blues/country package. The songwriting is tight as well. I just am not seeing much experimentation here or with the Stones in general.
Not normally my kinda thing but clearly a great album, more folk/country inspired than I thought it'd be. Saved a few tracks. 4/5
Starting to get the RS hype
Great album Stones
This might be my favorite Stones album of the ones I've heard so far, but that's not saying a whole lot. This album feels like a good houseparty, with Mick Jagger as host. It might be a bit long and meandering, but it always keeps the groove going.
Exile On Main St. marked a point of decline for the Rolling Stones, but it was a decline from a trilogy of albums so great that it would take a decade before the Stones would truly settle into mediocrity. There were a number of 70s albums still amazing, but nothing would come close to touching Beggars/Bleed/Sticky. I would say it's a shame, but the Stones had more great albums than most bands. The fact that only three are perfect five stars is still a great accomplishment.
Very fun, very stones.
The music is good, but the album is too long.
Well it's a GREAT album and has some of favorite Stones song, which means some of my favorite songs period. Sweet Virginia, Tumbling Dice, Happy, Rocks Off, Ventilator Blues. Having said that it doesn't hold my attention the whole way through which keeps it just shy of a full 5 star rating 4.5
Knew the album already, good but boring at times
Loved hearing this again. The songs for the most part sound pretty loosely structured, but the grooves and chord vamps underpinning them are so good.
I enjoyed practically every song on this album, I just felt it was a bit too long for me. This has to be my favourite Rolling Stones album that I've heard through this time that I've been generating albums (and I've heard most of them).
It's the Stones. For a double album, it flows by relatively quickly. Not sure what else can be said about this record aside from, "I enjoyed it." Favorite tracks: "Tumbling Dice", "Ventilator Blues"
Rock n roll my friends!
Solid Stones album. Not my favorite but very listenable.
A bit embarrassing but I haven't heard much Rolling Stones beyond random songs here and there, but this was pretty damn good. I think you could easily rate this a 5, but in terms of enjoyment for me it's a 4. You can feel the energy on this one, I'm sure lots of these are great live.
Ágætis blúsívaf. Áheyranlegasta hingað til með Stones.
It‘s a grower on me, und ein Denkmal für Charlie Watts. Faves: Let It Loose, Rocks Off und Shine A Light.
Very bluesy. Would make great background music
Bluesy.
Absolutely classic. A few weak tracks and a lot of misogyny pull it down from a 5 to a 4, but this is a pretty iconic album.
solid stones album
Double album with 18 songs from the Rolling Stones. Much more bluesy vibe to the album, not as much in the pure rock that some of their more well-known tunes have. Funny that there is an 18 song Stones album and I haven't heard a single one of the tunes before, despite growing up on classic rock radio.
Nice blues rock that sounds like a big jam party. No Song really stands out and carries the album, the album is a rad bit too long but still good rock
Lots of people get super horny for the Stones. Not this reviewer so much. Good album - calm down
Listened while setting up my room. Pretty good, I haven't really listened to much of the stones but it had some pretty sweet grooves. Would listen again
Lots of bluesy filler which unfortunately dilutes the overall quality of the album which is a damn shame as there are enough great tracks here to make it an absolute classic. The best tracks are invariably the ones where they more overtly breakaway from standard rhythm and blues. Favourite track: the atmospheric 'Let it Loose' or the soaring 'Shine a Light'
Rating: 7/10 Best songs: Happy, Shine a light, Following the river
Honestly, I don’t get why this album gets praised as one of the greatest ever made. It’s still an amazing album, don’t get me wrong, but I just don’t see it as being superior to albums like Let It Bleed or Sticky Fingers. Personally, I feel it could’ve been a solid 12 track album that didn’t need to be a double.
I’m not the biggest Stones fan in the world…but this is FUCKING good man! I may just find myself investing more time in them! Great album, funky, bluesy, sexy rock!
Ok now this is what I'm talking about. Dirty, swaggering, rock n roll. Telecasters and bowl cuts and STD's. I've heard this one when I briefly tried to get into the Stones in my early 20's. I dunno why I never revisited this one because I distinctly remember liking this album the most out of all of them. First track kicks you in the fucking nuts; it might not be as loud or as crushing as modern rock music production wise but somehow the raw attitude sells it and it feels so much heavier than your run of the mill "rock" band these days. Suck my dick Royal Blood, Danko Jones, or whatever. This was when it was still dangerous and it was ok to be a self absorbed white guy with a guitar. I already love the song Rocks Off, let's hope that I don't suddenly remember why I stopped listening to the Stones in my initial attempt. Ok. I remember why I stopped listening to the Stones. Look, I love Bo Diddly's rhythmic guitar lines (to be fair the palatable context was provided by the first track off of VU so not that I'm trying to allocate any cool points here), I don't mind older rock n roll, but I just cannot fucking STAND the Chuck Berry dunga dunga dunga dunga guitar riffs. Fuck that shit. It's so fucking corny. But honestly it's not that bad here. I'm just not a blues guy, thanks to my dad who used to torture me with some of the worst examples of the genre (eat a dick Bonamossa, you're the blues version of pretentious metal guitarists that are more interested in speed and technicality than musicality), but maybe without that my guard would be down and I'd just stop being a hipster fuck and just appreciate it. Anyhow, it's all the more apparent how lost that glossy, but "clean" (by today's standards at least) tube amp sound isn't really prevalent in any kind of rock music that isn't indie or is trying to lean more on the masculine side of rock music. Perhaps I'm wrong because I've likely heard it in the afore mentioned shitty blues music my dad used to blast, but its swagger was probably completely ruined by the pristine production compared to this, which is a little grungier and rough around the edges, which is exactly how I like my standard guitar, drum, bass, vox album to sound like. Sounds organic and dirty and that shit hits my g spot. I'm more open to the classic country and blues guitar tropes these days, and now I get why I hated it so much in my early 20's despite being fond of guitarists that loved this era of the Stones, but yeah it's not rocking my world. Wouldn't call it average, it's just not singing to me. Except that first track, my God that shit gives me goose bumps. Intense attitude and swagger on that one. It's fairly difficult not to listen to this and hear it as a boring cliche'd classic rock album, but that's likely due to its age and my own ignorance on the subject. It's just hard to see it as a seriously creative thing, and it's not like I even believe that myself. Some of the tracks on here feel like they're meandering into obvious turns that I've heard a million times. Blame my generation's dopamine fatigued brain I guess. It's not horrible at all or even bad or even mediocre, it's just not for me. The piano riff of Loving Cup kinda rips. I gotta admit for how many songs are on this thing it doesn't feel for a moment that anything here was really uninspired, despite my previous remarks of how cliche'd it can sound at the same time. Ok, I'm nearing the end of the album and it kinda rips a lot harder than how I felt about it my first time hearing it. That's just how I am, either albums rip right out the gate or it takes me several tries before I can come up with an opinion.
I thoroughly enjoyed this album. Usually I like more contemporary rock albums, but it genuinely surprised me on how it created a cohesive sound throughout the entirety of the album. Instrumentals were good, they were par with other rock albums.
Stones, both attention grabbing and slight forgettable at the same time
Good album but I feel it's a bit to long. How ever it's got some rockers on it and who can dispute the stones!
Solid as a rock rock. Great guitar riffs, classic vocals. Not too much more to be said about an album that probably has a million words written about it.
Really enjoyed this. Not as familiar with these songs as other stones albums but it checked al their boxes. Tumbling dice, sweet Virginia, happy
Everything that made the Stones great - great hard rock soaked in blues. Favorite Song: Torn and Frayed.
Can’t go wrong with a stone’s album
[Rocks off] Опять студентота. [Rip this joint] Пампит. Keine Songs, die besonders herausstechen, nicht etwa weil wir hier keine guten Songs haben, sondern weil alle ein ähnlich hohes Niveau haben, gutes Album, sehr old school, sehr Blues-lastig, I like it
Probably better than Sticky fingers, but still I think (hope) that Rolling Stones can be in even greater shape.
Pretty enjoyable but entirely too long
Me gustó Rip this joint y soul survivor. Mood: cosmic highway music on drugs
Muy bueno, pero muy largo
Having just reviewed London Callling, it is extremely appropriate NOT to just say the same thing about an album that most critics think is the best issued by the Rolling Stones. What makes this special is the constant presence of Richards and Taylors guitars -- riffs and solos. But I'm going to step back and NOT give a 5.
This album is heavy on American blues and gospel influence and each song carries a deliberation to it that can only be described as the spirit of rock n roll. At over an hour long, this album contains its fair share of toe-tappers with mediocre songs interspersed throughout. The background singers alone are reason enough to like this album. Listening while under the influence is recommended.
good stuff
fun listen
Bastante bastante bueno! Rock, blues.
Good stuff!
Great soft, upbeat rock. Good driving music to sing along to.
Classic, good afternoon sun album
Raw blues rock. The Stones at their most elemental - despite being disjointed they still managed to produce a rock classic
So, I'll admit it, I've never listened to a rolling stones album before. For my first time, I have to say that I really enjoy this album! I love how bluesy this album is, but in a hard-rock kind of way. It sounds so rough and abrasive, it really makes me realize why its called "rock and roll". It makes me feel like I'm on the road, in a freeing sense. I can clearly hear how much this album has been influenced by previous works, but perfected it, which explains why this album holds up so well againts modern bands that have clearly been inspired by the rolling stones. As far as blues-inspired rock goes, this is the best that I've ever heard. Also, I want to point out that there is no Stuart in this band, but there is an Ian Stewart which maybe counts towards our Stuart marathon.
Perfectly stones
Cool
the Rolling Stones will always be great even if some of the blues stuff is a bit bleurgh. saying that, ‘Ventilator Blues’ is one of the best tracks. I hope they have other albums on here.
Lovely bluesy sound
Before I listened to this album the first time (late 80s), the Rolling Stones were mostly part of the background radiation to me, a ubiquitous presence I was always aware of but thought about little. A friend turned me on to Exile and it captured my full attention immediately. Hardly any filler, compared to most double albums.
Very cool. A party I definitely want to be part of.
Another reminder as to how the stones have been relevant for half a century
Some brilliant stuff, prob a tad long.
super bluesy - enjoyed the raw feel to some of the tracks
Liked the album overall.
Fav Song: Shake Your Hips
Good, just good
Loved rocks off
Blues/rock mix. Rocks off = love it
Not my cup of tea but I can definitely hear how early blues influenced their sound. Additionally interesting to hear how the sound from the Stones influenced modern rock
Very good album, but not their best for sure.
Its amazing that a British band can make some of the most American music.
The songs were okay, I know they have much better albums
Talvez tenha sido a inspiração inicial deles fazerem música.
Another Stones album. A long album and not any tracks that I’m familiar with. It was ok, but I’ve never listened to it before and probably won’t again.
There's a lot of good stuff here like "Rocks off" and "Tumbling dice", but also loads of filler. As a single disc this might have been the one and only perfect Stones record, but this just drags on far too long.
Meh
Already know this one
This band has a handful of songs I like. None of them seem to be on here.
This is good but not great in my opinion. None of the 18 tracks here are bad by any means but there are no real hits either. Did expect more coming into it so maybe I liked it a little less due to that. Favourite song was probably Tumbling Dice.
I really wanted to like this but it just ran over my head and I can’t even remember anything about this album. I’ll have to be a 3
the more full albums i listen to from the rolling stones, the more i think that their big hits that everyone knows, don't necessarily represent them the best. their roots in the blues and like hard rock really shine through when you listen to them for an extended period. its not a bad thing by any means, but sometimes i don't think they match the "persona" that they have. that said, its a solid album and its a lot of content. i would be so stoked for a band's 10th album to have 18 tracks, all of which flow pretty well together. all in all, a solid listen.
I listened to this album a couple days ago while driving across South Dakota fighting with a new car’s cruise control/lane assist that completely shuts off with too much glare from the sun on the ‘eyes’ on the windshield. For those that don’t know, there aren’t really any large trees in South Dakota, so the sun shines freely. No huge hits on this album to keep my mind off of having to have my foot off the gas pedal for hours at a time.
- Uh it’s aight - Sorry I’m putting like zero effort into listening and writing notes
I know the mythology of Exile, the band holed up in their tax exile, working out songs until they thought they were perfect and the hitting record. But to my ears, these songs sound like a band white knuckling these tracks by the very edges of their fingernails. There's Tumbling Dice, which is my single favorite Stones song, and it's brilliant. But for every spark, there's a Turd On The Run to counter. The album bounces through 18 tracks that vary wildly in sound, style and quality. This isn't my first time giving this album a listen, but I find myself repeating the sentiment that this album does not live up to the hype. Exile on Main St is one of those albums that is consistently on the list of all time great albums, but I continue to not hear it. I think the rolling stones are a band that makes great singles (by virtue of releasing so many albums), but middling albums. Exile is no exception to that rule.
Turd in the Runs.
I haven’t got enough time to rate :(
5.5/10 i liked most of them and would be fine to listen to casually but i don't think any were particularly memorable they sort of blended into one for me but the good ones were pretty good, probably a nice driving album, tolerate his voice bit more now
Enjoyment: 7 Replayability: 6 Cohesion: 6 Flow/Pacing: 6 Artistic Merit: 7 Weighted Average: 6.5 Review: This is the first time I've listened to a Stones album all the way through. Of course they're a phenomenal band that has become synonymous with the idea of Rock 'n' Roll itself, but they're right on the periphery of my taste in rock. I've never heard any of these songs until today, and most sounded like filler to the point where after five songs in, the music all blended together. I liked the blend, but nothing stuck out as exceptional like I would expect from this band. Liked Song(s): Rocks Off, Rip This Joint, Sweet Virginia, Loving Cup, All Down The Line, Shine A Light, Soul Survivor Disliked Song(s): Shake Your Hips, Turd On The Run, Ventilator Blues, I Just Want To See His Face Recommend? Yes
more like the rolling mids lmao. yes grandpa you're soo subversive for putting a harmonica in your songs now let's get you to bed. it's not bad, per se, just kind of boring--at its best i get fun jam band vibes, and at its worst it's bob dylan (the most scathing critique i can levy). shine a light is a clear highlight.
More straight blues-y than I remember it being.
3/5 I don't really get the hype for this album. This is considered one the best albums of all time, but to me it just seems like a pretty good blues album. Most of the songs have a pretty basic structure, chord progression, and melody and lyrics aren't bad but don't seem incredible. I really enjoyed the brass and choral sections of some of these songs and there were some good guitar riffs, guitar tones, and drum fills, but nothing that made me go, "wow this album is incredible". Ventilator Blues was my favorite song. I also really hate "Sweet Black Angel", and even though it had good intentions the lyrics are trashy as hell. Rocks Off 4/5: A solid blues rock song, I like the horn section. The middle "hyponitized" section is cool and a nice way to change up the song. Rip This Joint 3.75/5: I like the blues piano in the background and the topic of the song is fun. Shake Your Hips 3/5: Almost sounds like ZZ Top got this riff from the Stones, but after doing some research sounds like the Rolling Stones also got this riff from John Lee Hooker. Pretty boring song other than the catchy riff. Casino Boogie 3.25/5: A pretty typical blues song with some crytpic sounding lyrics. A fine instrumental part at the end. Tumbling Dice 3.5/5: I like the background vocals. "Call me the tumbling dice" is a cool hook. Sweet Virginia 3/5: The guitar riff and harmonica are nice at the beginning but this song gets kinda boring for me. The melody is kinda interesting but not a fan of the chorus, the vocals just sound alright. Torn and Frayed 3.5/5: The melody is repetitive but the instrumenation is good (especially the guitar tone and guitar solo) Sweet Black Angel 1/5: Musically, the song is fine but honestly pretty boring. And the lyrics... aged like milk. I get this is supposed to be for Angela Davis, but the are you a kidding me? "She's a sweet blank angel, no a sweet black slave" ew. Loving Cup 3.75/5: I like the drum fills and the interesting middle section. Started out pretty boring but builds nicely. Great horn section at the end of the song. Happy 3.25/5: It's fine but not very memorable Turd On The Run 3/5: Funny song title and the guitar riff has a nice rhytmn but doesn't really go anywhere after that. Ventilator Blues 4.25/5: Cool sliding guitar riff (with an interesting tone) and a pretty funky beat. Favorite song so far and glad it varies from the other songs. I Just Want To See His Face 3/5: I thought the song was just gonna start the way it did, but it had the weird effect the whole time. Seems like a filler song to me. Let It Loose 4/5: Cool guitar tone and some nice piano riffs. A lot of interesting instrument tracked at the end At this point I got tired of rating each song. Soul Survivor 4.25/5: I did really like this song as the last song. Cool chord progrssion and great chorus.
I'm not a massive Rolling Stones fan, and this is definitely not my favorite record by them but it has been a long time since I listened to it and I think it fits my taste a lot more now. This isn't one of their records filled with their hits, and it is pretty much just a blues record. It followed two albums with massive impacts (Let It Bleed, Sticky Fingers)but while there was nothing on Exile that I was blown away by, I did find it incredibly consistent. It was easy to listen to the whole way through without any moment taking me out of it. One stand out for me is the cover of Stop Breaking Down. I will love almost any version of that song I hear, from the 1937 Stop Breakin' Down Blues by Robert Johnson to the very noisy 1999 cover off of The White Stripes self-titled album.
You know, I like that this made Exile in Guyville possible (if that is the case) but just didn't love this one. Some Stones I dig (2000 Man, hello Bottle Rocket 🚀) but this just didn't start me up.
Great blues rock combination. May not have the anthems of other albums but good with bbq & a beer.
It was very groovy, I think it can really see how its impacted later artists
MUCH more enjoyable than my other stones experience on this list. I get it a lot more now. This is a great rhythmic driving dancing band. There is some blues and there are riffs too, and even some songs.
Good listen. Great shop music. Didn’t blow me away. Tumbling Dice
Listen out of order since Spotify licensing shenanigans
It started good but kinda fell off.
one of my favorite stones albums, though i’m just not huge on the stones. hard to rate for me really as my enjoyment depends on the day
Consistent album in that there is no real highs or lows in it. I was expecting a bit more given the reverence some folks have for this particular RS album so slight disappointed that's it isn't amazing
let it bleed was better
Have I listened to this album before No How familiar am I with this album I know this less than any other stones album How do I feel about this artist? I really like the Stones Pre-Listen Thoughts: My mom is questioning why this is on the list, maybe it’s not their best work Favorite track(s): Stop Breaking Down Post-Listen Thoughts: This was pretty basic. It wasn’t bad at all, but it didn’t seem up to par with their work. I personally would swap this out for Some Girls any day.
The Stones aren't my favourite of the big bands of their era, but I like them well enough and I quite like this album. The songs are solid throughout but there aren't really any towering standouts for me. The miscellaneous sprawling approach has its appeals, but ultimately eighteen tracks of Stones sleaze is far more than I ever need in one go. (I could've at least done without Sweet Black Angel, regardless of how people bend over backwards to explain that it's so cleverly political and well-intentioned and Angela Davis would've totally appreciated the condescension, actually.)
Surprisingly enjoyable! Cannot stand Jaggers voice but the blues rock vibes were entertaining. The album is far too long and a bit samey so could easily have been a single not double album. Particularly enjoyed Let Loose and Sweet Virginia … I think … they did kind all blur into one.
I just don't think it's that good.
Was fine
Good
Now typically I don't like old rock and roll, kind of more bluesy stuff but the way they experiment and changed certain things up intrigues me, like with the heavy flanger effect on the guitar on Let It Loose or the canned sounding recording style of the vocals on I Just Want To See His Face. Without these effects and production choices I think it would be much more forgettable to me, but in pairing with the dense instrumentation and original song writing it goes well with me even though it's not my type of style.
definitely had a handful of songs i thought were good and that i enjoyed but i just don’t think it needed to be this long….. could have done without a lot of those songs
Nice bit of rhythm and blues
a nostalgic feel to it, as if im living a distant memory i never lived, one where i am friends with dad and we are the same age, although it is not necessarily my cup of tea, i do like the mood it puts you in. overall its 6/10
The two singles, “Tumbling Dice” and “Happy,” are two standout songs on this album. “Happy” has Keith Richards on vocals, a change up I always appreciate. A song called “I Just Want to See His Face” has another change up: a positive reference to…Jesus? Am I hearing that right? I’m not a huge Stones fan to begin with but it’s a solid album. I’m also really glad that, having received this album, it’s the last I’ll see of them for rest of this 1001 journey, and perhaps forever.
This record ended up being fairly okay. Favourite Track(s): Shake Your Hips, Let It Loose Least Favourite Track(s): Sweet Virginia, Torn And Freyed
Probably one of their better ones I've heard, but it still wasn't anything hugely spectacular
my first time listening to this one. super underwhelming. this is one of those albums that I've heard about since I started paying attention to music and expected it to live up to its place in the canon. not so much, to my ears anyway. I'm finding with The Rolling Stones that their "rock" songs I'm down with (but not blown away), and then the rest just appears to be blues for people who like blues when it's coming from white people? in other words, mediocre. maybe there's something I'm not getting here. at least I enjoyed it more than Aftermath.
mono
It was good. Nothing ultra memorable but I liked it.
Rv
Familiar with The Rolling Stones (kin duh!). Though, not with this album. First Listen, This album is immediately better than my last listen to an RS album (that being Let It Bleed). Rocks Off was a good start but the following track, Rip This Joint, is a favourite for sure. Personally, that should've opened the album. Casino Boogie and the bass performance from Keith Richards is chief kiss type shit. Keep elderly white women away from this song. Let's go! We got some Marimba in Sweet Black Angel! Let's go! We got some N-Word in Sweet Black Angel! The marimba dominants my attention pretty heavily. Good? I don't know. What also dominants my attention is the line "Ten little @#$%@#^&%$#%#$%$#" AGH! Really like the marimba. I think there's a reason why they only performed this song once live. Maybe I spoke too soon. I'm not really connecting with this album as much as I thought I was going to be. The middle of the albums tracks are not working for me. Though, the last third seems to be bring back some of the aspects I was enjoying from Rip This Joint, it still isn't really enough for me. Highlight of the album, All Down The Line is really the only track in the later half of the album that I found myself really enjoying. Overall, I'm feeling exactly how I did with Let It Bleed. There really are only a few songs from this album I found myself wanting to repeatedly go back to. I can 100% say that the performance are stellar, RS's kind of rock only sometimes works for me. T3: Rip This Joint, All Down The Line, Casino Boogie
Gillar det man hör men minns inget efteråt.
Saaks kõrgema, aga mul tõesti pole tuju sellise muusika jaoks praegu
Never listened to this and never thought I would enjoy it but it was pretty alright. Solid 3 stars.
First 2xLP of the project! I terms of which disc is better, it's easily disc 1, as disc 2 kinda didn't have a lot that jumped out at me, at least from what I've heard so far. Not bad, but could've been cut down into a strong 1xLP. Highlights-Rocks Off, Rip This Joint, Shake Your Hips, Tumbling Dice, Sweet Virginia, Torn and Frayed, Let It Loose, and Stop Breaking Down.
Took a few listens to get into it. There were a few songs I enjoyed, might come back to it. Top Songs: Tumbling Dice, Torn and Frayed, Sweet Virginia, Loving Cup, Let It Loose
Not my favourite Stones album
It was okay, seems generic from my 2020's perspective of rock 'n roll, but would have been cool to hear in the context of when it came out, and maybe with more listening I will gain that context! This was released in 1972, and was the Stones' 10th album.
This one felt a little bit of a chore unfortunately. I just don't think I'm a massive fan of The Rolling Stones, and once I had heard the first few tracks, I knew what the rest would be like. Not that there's anything explicitly had about the album, it's completely fine. Favourites: Tumbling Dice Torn and Frayed Ventilator Blues
Ok so it's the Stones, we all get it. I can't he too critical BUT I have my own gripes. Firstly, Tumbling Dice is an excellent song, and Happy is fun. Secondly and mainly, I know that the Stones (and a wide swath of other British bands of the time) are heavily influenced by and love Blues music. Now when you make your hour plus long album, and then give me a bunch of super bluesy tunes in your fun lil romp, it's frustrating. I get you like it but make some original stuff too
I think project is starting to challenge my previous music habits. I’ve always been a self-described classic rock lover, although admittedly the Stones were never my favorite. Happy and Tumbling Dice are great but the rest of the double album, while fine, just didn’t grab me like I thought it would. Good, but not great. I’ll be interested to see if my ceiling for the Stones is any higher.
Number 14 greatest album of all time? I’m not buying it… well I haven’t and I won’t. Sounds like a bunch of drunken blues rockers jamming. There are, at most, half a dozen keepers and even those are mostly just OK. This band was capable of so many awesome licks & hooks but there’s not many to be found here except maybe on “tumbling dice“. Humbug
I am not a fun of country music... I can say this is an acceptable country album 3/5
This is really a 3.5 - a fun little album!
On second listen, I tried to imagine I didn’t know it was a Rolling Stones album. It was more enjoyable as a blues/rock&roll experience. However, I struggled to really see how it has been widely received as their best work. OK but no revisit.
Really drives home the Stones’ bluesyness, but kind of dull.
Listened 14 May 2006 Back to their R&B roots
i like "tumbling dice" & "i just want to see his face". extremely mixed thoughts on "sweet black angel". everything sounded sort of samey. didnt hate it. back half better than the front.
Behagelig, passe variert. 3-4
I liked the sound and vibe; however, too many songs sound like uninspired, never-ending jam sessions over the blues progression.
Unexpectedly bluesy, flows well, never had the urge to skip, no songs stood out to me though
A perfectly serviceable blues rock album, there are 2 songs that I genuinely enjoy but besides that it’s a long album that doesn’t blow me away and at times overstays its welcome
Messy, drunk, dusty blues rock. Sometimes too long, but the vibe is great. Some tracks like Sweet Virginia or Rocks off work very well, but too many don’t. Still, it’s probably the Stones at their dirtiest and coolest before becoming shit.
there’s not a single reason for it to be over an hour
Never been a fan and this record does not change that...
Better than the kinks with some good songs but does just sound like a standard rock and roll album to me
Highlights: Rocks Off, Rip This Joint, Tumbling Dice, Sweet Virginia, Loving Cup, Let It Loose, All down the Line, Shine a Light
I always felt like the stones were over-emulating blues to the point of making a bit of a joke of it. Like, their fans weren't in on the joke. I will say there's some great tracks on here but I can't shake the feeling and I have definitely listened to some stones as my close friend has ever been a massive fan.
I've always been more of a Beatles guy than a Stones guy (the two genders of early rock music). This one does nothing to convince me - most of the album is pretty generic, slightly raw and sloppy blues - well executed, but nothing special. The few exceptions ("Tumbling Dice" and "Shine a Light" being the standouts) are a little more interesting, but still nothing exceptional. It's fine, I guess.
Feeling this one is super overrated. It’s like they went back 20 years and stole all the American music from that time and before. Not great. Might dock it a star for the dated, thieving.
It's too long. I'm surprised that a lot of people think this is their best album because I've liked a couple of their others from this list more. It's ok.
I’m a single Stones fan. Never listened to a record until now. It was good.
I thought it was alright, most of the songs were nice
It is pretty bluesy. Definitely not my drama but i can agree that its a good album. 2/5 personally for me.
The Best Stones album.
i mean its okay
2.75
Some classic Rolling Stones. I'd never listened to this one cover to cover before, and I have to say that there weren't many standout moments or songs for me. Overall I think I could have died without listening first. 5/10
The rolling phones CALL FOR SOME HELP
Upbeat album, not what I expected given all of the classic songs that I was aware of. Felt very Bluesy
Good songs, but why does every Rolling Stones song identical?
very good. some good songs but not entirely my style. would like to know them by hard to get to sing them
Pretty good as a whole, and enjoyable to have in the background. Didn't end up adding any songs though
It was fine. That Rocky-Blues kinda sound worked well for the time period. I did not recognize a single track, however. Which, considering it's the stones, is kinda weird. I guess that's why the album is only, "fine".
Meh. The Stones are kinda boring.
This was good to me but not great, never really been the biggest RS fan though.
fun!
Way more “just ok” than I was expecting.
i have to be in a really specific mood to listen to the rolling stones, and i wasnt in it :(
Rocks Off - 4/5 Rip This Joint - 4/5 Shake Your Hips - 3/5 Casino Boogie - 3/5 Tumbling Dice - 4/5 Sweet Virginia - 3/5 Torn and Frayed - 5/5 Sweet Black Angel - 3/5 Loving Cup - 3/5 Happy - 4/5 Turd on the Run - 3/5 Ventilator Blues - 5/5 I Just Want to See His Face - 2/5 Let It Loose - 5/5 All Down the Line - 3/5 Stop Breaking Down - 3/5 Shine a Light - 4/5 Soul Survivor - 5/5 Average score: 3.7/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️ honestly, this is probably the most i've ever enjoyed a Rolling Stones album. i don't think i liked it enough to round my score up, as there was still quite a bit i wasn't crazy about, but there were a handful of tracks i'd easily come back to listen to
I liked this one better than Beggar’s Banquet, but I still cannot believe how much these British dudes were just parodying Southern/black American music - not a bad thing, just like, woah. The Beatles did it but introduced enough other influences that you didn’t notice as much and it felt more global, but these Brits are purists! None of us American could sing or write as well as Jagger? Anyway, I know where I stand in the Beatles vs Rolling Stones debate.
I guess this was peak Rolling Stones and then afterwards they honed the sound and surfed on through the decades with that. It's alright.
probably their most enjoyable album ive heard so far some hit or misses though
I’m sure this was groundbreaking at the time, but my today ears hear the sounds of a classic rock radio station doing a marathon of Rolling Stones songs when Keith Richards ultimately kicks the bucket. 2.7/5.0
It definitely seems good in general but to me specifically I don’t really like it? Like you can tell someone cool would definitely like this album, or that it’s well made, but it doesn’t specifically speak to me
Yet another album of the Stones revisiting blues. It's nice and cool but once again it's not exactly my kind of stuff. Favorite Songs: Shake Your Hips ;
Never really had much of the stones on my phone. Album was catchy but no must haves for me.
This is typical Rolling Stones for me: not great, but not terrible either... 3 stars :-)
Was alright. Maybe I need to revisit it but I didn't love it too much.
not bad, pretty easy listening
Rating: 7.5/10 Review: I mean, the Stones are good. This isn’t their best album, but it’s by no means bad. I just don’t think these British dudes were the best at making this kind of American music. I would probably choose to listen to other artists in a similar style before putting on this album again. Listen again?: Sure
Prima
This was okay. Not something I’d gravitate towards usually, but good for expanding my music palate.
I just don’t get the hype. I have yet to be impressed by a full album of TRS. This is one of the better ones, but not by much.
- generally upbeat - longer album than the last few - kind of samey -
Maybe their best one, they're just so boomer coded Will I listen to again: 25%
All fine enough, but little in here I can grab on to. And I've tried so many times. Just blends into the background in a harmless way, which I'm pretty sure is not the intention.
Who but the Stones for honky-tonk rock. Credit as always for folding in horns and backup vocals to make a good song great. I think Steel Wheels is their best "album", but though Exile wasn't entirely cohesive, there was a lot here to get into: - Tumbling Dice (✅✅✅) is a one of all-time favorite songs of theirs - Sweet Black Angel was ???? - Rocks Off is the same story as Satisfaction – someone prescribe this man some sex therapy!
Musically speaking it is a fine qwork, but I don't know. The Rolling Stones just don't do it to me.
I like the blues sound underlying some of these tracks, and the loose sound of the album in general. I can see this playing the in background at a party, but none are songs that I can really retain after listening to the record.
Nothing inherently wrong with it. Doesn't really go hard. Pretty boring, honestly. It is good. I dont like it.
yes queen
Every Rolling Stones album really solidifies that I do not understand the hype. I truly cannot comprehend why they are put on the same level as The Beatles
¡Increíble álbum! Tiene mucho estilo.
Rock / Blues 2,8
This is pretty good. Not my favorite Stones record. Not my least favorite either. I’d put it on par with The Black Album
I'd say better than the last one but still not as good as I want it to be. Maybe a little too honky-tonky.
Welp I didn't care for this as much as the previous album, Beggars Banquet but still fun.
Another one of the Stones.
I have always enjoyed listening to rolling stones' Hot rocks compilation album, and I suppose it is about time I listened to their later work. This album was actually not too bad, although I wasn't really paying attention since I was concentrating on drawing, but I may give it a proper listen some other time.
Really wish this hadn’t come up as my first Rolling Stones album but it was a good listen and perfect for a long walk on a nice day. Maybe my dad had a point after all!
lost most of my interest after hearing gratuitous use of the n word! also, it should have been half as long. despite these things, there was some of it that i enjoyed.
Not bad just not for me
alright
i mean, it's fine
Demasiado R&B
Was ok I guess. 3.2
It's okay, but that's about as far as I'd go.
Never quite understood the hype on this one.
okay vibey danceable
Good ole’ blues album.
