3.5 stars. Fun and catchy New Wave that borders on too poppy but is still overall enjoyable. The leadoff track "Hanging On The Telephone" that really does a good job of setting the tone for the album. Other standouts are "Heart of Glass" and the earworm "One Way Or Another/"

Didn’t really get into any of the songs other than the hits I already know.
Struggled to rate this one tbh. On the one hand, Debbie Harry and crew are absolutely iconic of the post-punk era. Also, there's no denying that there are tracks here that nomadic desert tribes in the Kalahari are familiar with - even they sing along to "One Way or Another". But somehow, I never *quite* got it. I don't hate Blondie by any means, but I can't think of an occasion where I've though - ooooooh, that would hit the spot right now. I'm going "3" but feels VERY harsh
The bangers are all timers. Heart of Glass, Sunday Girl, One Way Or Another, Picture This, Hanging On The Telephone are brilliant songs Such a shame that what is in between them is so forgettable

Really good sounds but lyrics are so weak. I like the drummer and Harry has an interesting voice, so I'll move it from a 2 to a 3

This had 2 written all over it, but it really surprised me. 11:59 was fantastic and I’m excited to come back to it. Other than the hits, it was a solid album and a refreshing listen compared to the sh** I’ve endured recently.
good album for the time and some memorable hits
I've heard Blondie's hits before, but have never listened to an album cover to cover, so this should be an interesting day. Blondie are a pop rock band from USA. They are a female led group, and they influenced so many female led groups that came later such as: Madonna, Paramore, and Garbage. This album is their third studio album, and is apparently the album in which they changed from a new wave band to a more pop oriented band. This album still has a few rock forward songs (One Way or Another, and Hanging on the Telephone), but the bulk of the album is closer to the pop side of the spectrum. Debbie Harry had a very interesting vocal style that is instantly recognizable. She has done some living too! Apparently she was a go-go dancer, and a playboy bunny for a short period of time, she was an actress (leading role in the movie Videodrome as well as other movies), she almost got kidnapped by serial killer Ted Bundy, and she was a self proclaimed New York Dolls groupie. For this album, the band worked with record producer, Mike Chapman. Chapman saw the band as sloppy, and spent a lot of time trying to hone the skills of each individual. This didn't sit well with some of them, causing bassist Nigel Harrison to throw a synthesizer at Chapman. Overall, a fairly average album today. Nothing really caught me by surprise or jumped out at me. Just a normal run of the mill female led pop band. I probably won't listen again, but can certainly see how big of an influence they were on pop music today. Blondie- has some catchy hooks. Robert Fripp on radiate and fade away. I liked the buddy holly cover. Heart of glass is so great. I like her vocals. 3.5 3

A bit pop-y for me at times, but, hey, it was the 80's. So I'll forgive them because this album was fun!
there are enjoyable parts all through the album and they ruin it by being poppy right after or during. almost good like a lot of old bands I don't have nostalgia for. one way or another, heart of glass
every song sounds like a blondie song. its catchy but i wouldnt listen to it outside of my local record store playing it on the speakers.
2 huge hits and a bunch of strong pop-rock songs. Certainly not the worst thing to come out of the 70s and I can assume the influence this had on other artists was huge. It’s not something that I would casually listen to, but I won’t turn it off on the radio. That feels like a 3 to me.

They're fantastic
As cool as I think Blondie are, I don't know if they've ever stuck the landing on a whole album. Their first album comes close, but there's a reason why most people encounter this band via their greatest hits. Parallel Lines is a good example of this. I've always thought this album was basically 4-5 excellent songs, plus a bunch of fairly unmemorable ones. When the band gets it right, they are riveting, with that wonderful late 70s new wave/power pop energy that just doesn't exist in music anymore. But for what is actually a pretty brief album, there are way too many skippable tracks. That said, "Heart of Glass" is simply one of the prettiest songs ever made. You can't listen to that song and not want to put your platforms on and dance. Bonus points for bringing in Fripp, but still a high 3. I don't like the 80s.
Blondie's "Parallel Lines" is a classic rock/pop album that shares similarities with other music of the era. While influential, some tracks lack energy, and the sound hasn't aged well.
Bloodies vocals carry this one in front of a fairly bland band. It’s inoffensive Pop Rock and it’s good but aside from the two obvious standouts and maybe I know but I Don’t know, there’s nothing that really grabbed me here. Blonde and the Blandies get 3 stars

Has some songs and some attitude, but I was surprised how much acclaim this album garnered, it just didn’t do it for me. Hanging on the Telephone holds up with some of the better punk songs of the era and Heart of Glass was a disco jam, but punk and disco are like oil and water to me. Couple other solid songs, but nothing that memorable. Overall a solid meh.
The hits are bit, but there's a couple of tracks that are just merely there. The Buddy Holly cover, I'm Gonna Love You Too, is really fun.
3/5. A great pop album with the singer really guiding the album. Some classics for sure on here but definitely some misses. Will pick and choose but not listen all the way through again.

What a star Debbie Harry was-- is maybe-- I think she's touring right now. All the songs that were great still are and the ones that weren't a part of her greatest hits album were better than I expected. It's fun to imagine what the scene must've been like with Harry in the Green Room for a show of this album. Bet it was wild!
"Heart of Glass" and "One Way or Another" was pretty much all I knew of Blondie, along with a vague sense of Debbie Harry as a frontwoman. Unfortunately, though "Heart of Glass" is iconic, I kind of hate it. "One Way or Another," and the rest of the first half of "Parallel Lines," are much better. But it seems like most of the time there is just a little something missing. Sometimes the guitars are great, sometimes they are forgettable. Sometimes Harry's voice finds the edge and the attitude, but too often it's missing. Things start to go downhill a bit starting with "Pretty Baby," and by the time the aforementioned "Heart of Glass" arrived I had nearly given up. The cover of Buddy Holly's "I'm Gonna Love You Too" almost brought things back, but overall I'm left curious about whether Blondie's earlier albums delivered more bite.
Hard to argue against this album as a classic, as you can hear so many things that inspired bands that came after, but not something I would personally ever have in heavy rotation. Stand out for me were the drums, which were killer on nearly every track. I was surprised Heart of Glass was buried so deep in the track list, but I guess you never know what’s going to be an enduring pop culture hit.

Ooh I am glad this album was suggested to me. Did not listen to the whole album in one go, but I repeated parts of the album a couple of times (first halves only, last halves only). All in all, I enjoyed the album and am looking forward to explore the band in the future. 3.8/5
Decent album
Good album. I love Blondie. Heart of glass is the highlight here. But the album as a whole doesn't grab me.
The hits on this album really hold up the rest of it. It started to feel a lot longer than 39 minutes by the end. It did seem appropriate that the last track on the album is titled "Just Go Away" though.

The second best Blondie album, behind Best Of. Which sounds like a Partridge thing to say, but this doesn't quite reach the heights of hit after hit. The singles here are outstanding. The rest of the album keeps the very tight rhythm section running. Plus that silk voice. Debbie Harris actually sounds like she looks in all those early 80's sugar pop lush videos.

3.5 stars mostly for “Heart of Glass”. The rest of the album is pretty good? Nothing crazy though. I wish it was more punk.

Great start to this music/listening project. I really only know Heart of Glass and One Way or Another. Glad to have heard the rest of the album that I, otherwise, wouldn’t have done. Some caught my attention right away, others were easily forgotten after hearing it. Those that stood out and are new favorites are: Hanging on the Telephone and Fade Away and Radiate. And Heart of Glass, of course, is a classic and remains my favorite of all.

It’s ok. There are some timeless classics here that everyone knows, but it’s somewhat of a boring album that lacks any wow.
This one I have heard a few times. More depth than just the singles.

I liked the hits - even the disco song! The rest was mediocre though.
The first two songs are serious bangers - Hanging on the Telephone and One Way or Another. Debbie Harry has a killer voice here, full of spunk, verve and attitude. I think Telephone is their all-time best song actually. The rest of the album, including Heart of Glass is fine, but not as outstanding as the first two killers. Along with the Cars and Devo, Blondie was part of the big trifecta of American new wave bands in the 70's.
Ah, this is why I know of them. Pretty decent stuff even outside the hits honestly.

Pretty good new wave album. Some amazing hits and some meh deep cuts. Overall it's fine but it's not something I'm gonna add to my constant rotation, but I'll be glad to return to it from time to time.

As albums go, this one is one of those typical “some songs are awesome, some are fillers”. However. This is one of those albums that make me mourn what had happened to pop music over the years. Why did it deteriorate from this incredibly musical, powerful, wonderful voice and personality powered incarnation, into the dreary repetitive boredom of contemporary pop?
Overall solid, the B side is way better than the A side

Best Song: Hanging on the Telephone. Just enough of that gruff quality to the vocals, and everything is quick and uptempo enough to stay interesting. Worst Song: One Way Or Another. Maybe it's just overplayed, but I find the chorus (especially the getcha-getcha-getcha) very grating. Overall: The vocals are the best part here, and they're best when pushed into a throaty, rock direction. Unfortunately, those rock moments are not as frequent as the plain, fairly basic era pop. Also, the album absolutely didn't need to be 16 tracks.

Fun party pop punk pop lite. This album has a dark edge with contrasts of hope and light. Guitar is much heavier and distorted than I would have expected. Many surprises on this album. Hints of 50s pop and show tunes can be heard in some tracks.

Have to admit that New Wave is a bit of blind spot for me. As a 90's alt rock fan, it always felt a bit too mainstream (and 80's) despite a lot of these bands coming up in CBGB with the early punk rock bands in the 70s. Been listening to the "Ongoing History of New Music" podcast's history of alt-rock recently though and I feel like they did a good job of describing them (and New Wave). They said something like "They don't sound like punk rock, but when you hear them you can tell that punk rock had happened." This record definitely feels like that. It's very commercial sounding and there are some big hits on here that probably feel more tame than they did when this came out because they've been played so many times. But there is an edge to the playing that probably wouldn't have been there without punk having happened. It's a fun record and I can see why people like it but probably not something I'll revisit very much. Solid 3 stars for me.

One Way or Another and Heart of Glass are such great songs and showcases of this genre and Debbie Harry's voice, but the rest of the album kind of underwhelmed me.
Some very strong songs here and excellent moments – starting with the very promising opener. But despite a decently high level of quality throughout, there’s a vintage quality to this, a feel that makes it seem more of its time than truly timeless. Debbie Harry has a very distinctive voice, without necessarily being a great singer (one finds her a bit all over the place, excessively talky one moment and then given to yelping the next). “Fade Away & Radiate” and “Pretty Baby” are both interesting without quite being fully affecting. “Picture This” has a great (if too short guitar solo) and “Sunday Girl” and “11:59” are engaging. “Heart of Glass” is pure pop-disco fun. Still this is mainly enjoyable rather than inspirational. One wonders if maybe they were better live and figures that this might be just about the replacement level for deathbed records.
I am unfamiliar with Blondie besides they biggest hit "One Way Or Another", which is such a classic song. "Heart of Glass" is another song that I recognize and that I appreciate. Overall the album is alright, I'm happy to have listened to it, but I don't think I will add it to my regular listening rotation.
Hmm I wasn’t really a fan of this, but it was okay.
Not bad at all but I feel like this album came out during a time where it was a bigger deal and the sound was newer and fresh. As of now it sounds like most pop rock artists so I don’t really get it.
Good but I've heard some of these songs quite a bit already on the radio which kind of diminishes enjoyment for me. Great songwriting/arranging.

Getting away from the recognizable hits like Hanging on the Telephone, One Way Or Another and Heart of Glass, Parallel Lines by Blondie spans the multiple genres that came crashing together during this era. When you blend Post-punk, new wave and disco to make it work, it works. Sadly, filling an album with songs that don't make this sound work gets a little repetitive. This is a very good album and does what every Blondie album needs to do, blend a few of the recognizable hits with the sound currently working its way through the NY clubs. 3.5/5
I'm honestly a little let down. Debbie Harry is a great singer, and there's a couple really good songs (I'd probably say that the first and last songs were my favorites), but it's mostly pretty bland. Not bad, just forgettable.

'One Way or Another' and 'Heart of Glass' doing some supremely heavy lifting here. Most of the rest isn't something I'd choose to listen to again but those two tracks alone raise it from a 2 to a 3.

Probably a 3.5. There were a lot of tracks I liked but probably an equal amount that I was pretty meh on. The time changes on Heart of Glass are always welcome though.

I love "One Way or Another" but it is (objectively) not a great song. I could say that about most of the songs on this album. They're fun. They kinda sound like they were written by a band of middle-schoolers - both the music and the lyrics. Blondie seems to me like the No Doubt of the 70s-80s. A female lead singer who is versatile enough (Debbie Harry strikes me as a poor-man's Stevie Nicks - with a little bit of Joan Jett mixed in there), but is definitely the selling point of a mediocre backing band. Everything in me says this is a 2, but I'm going to give it a bump because I can definitely hear how Blondie's sound (especially on this album) likely influenced a lot of 80s pop - as well as several female-fronted bands that would follow. So, Kudos.

Not sure the context of Blondie’s Parallel Lines in the pantheon of rock and roll but as a punk new wave band I can see why she’s still relevant today.
I want to like this more than I do. It's like a mish-mash of 70s and 80s and it doesn't work quite as well as you remember.
I actually knew a couple songs from it, which is a testament for something so old! Album was diverse and had a decent sound to it, not my cup of tea though

This one ripped! Blondie is fucking iconic, punk attitude with a glam veneer.
Some of it was great, particularly the classic singles, but other stuff just didn’t do much for me. A classic 3 star if I ever heard one.

Somehow much more post punk than I expected. Nice moody songs as well as the big ones like heart of glass. I liked opening of "fade away and radiate" and there were songs like "I know but I don't know" and "will anything happen" where I thought I'd really grown to like the album as a whole. But songs like "I'm gonna love you too" and "picture this" kinda tainted it for me. There's something about the slickness and upbeatness that maybe inherently puts me off. I think a lot of the lyrics felt a bit surface level as well and slightly derivative compared to songs like "one way or another". Maybe I'm just in a grumpy mood. I still like the big songs on this album and found some new ones to enjoy, but very much don't feel the need to listen to it all the way through.

Do I not like Blondie that much? It's too much basic standard pop for me. I think I enjoy covers of the best known songs of the album a lot more than the originals. Other than Heart of Glass, that song is great!
3.7 + A fun, light-hearted blend of new wave, surf, disco and punk digested for a pop audience. Out of context, it's a little dull and suffers from filler tracks. But Debbie Harry remains a template for pop starlet and she brings the vocals to back the look. \"Heart of Glass\" by itself could carry this record, it's a forever favorite of mine, but there are a number of other highlights - \"Fade Away and Radiate\", \"Sunday Girl.\" Definitely overrated as an album but good nonetheless.

lol @ the hair on this album cover. I thought "I Know But I Don't Know" was going to be an underrated favorite until 56 seconds in and then it fell off; that guy coming in to harmonize sounds horrible

Extra points because I’ve always had a crush on Debbie Harry. Heart of Glass has been on repeat for me for years. Solid album. Very digestible. Somehow it all feels 80’s vital, maybe not hits, but all contributing to the sound of the era, well produced and technically sound. A genre mashup between pop, punk and reggae. It’s the missing link between the talking heads and Ramones on the way to the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Great drumming throughout. There are a few meh songs and every song is about love. Pretty good. B
I really want to like Blondie, and I think I do, but it just feels so time bound. Have to be in the right mood for this.

I didn't mind this, but I still would change the channel I think if it was on the radio. its 2.5 stars for me but ill give it three because its one of the more different sounding 80's albums I have heard.

Looking at this bbn playlist I wondered if I was going to recognize anything other than One Way or Another. Heart of Glass was the only other familiar song. This album came out considerably earlier than I would have thought. The musical style of many of the songs I didn't particularly recognize surprised me

Some high highs and low lows on this album. The Blondie hits on this one are good, but there are a lot of songs that don't really need to exist on the album as well.

Better then I thought it would be. Lots of songs on there that I knew of but didn't know they made. Lots of classics on it. Some songs were a bit dated/weren't my style but most of them still bangs.

Great guitat album and awesome vocal performance (Fade Away and Radiate is my favorite) but i'm really getting tired of Heart of Glass. Some tracks are a bit skippable and are not that unique.

A slight disappointment. The two big singles stand out and a couple of other undiscovered gems but otherwise a slightly bland and forgettable album overall.

I really like her voice and the background vocals in heart of glass but I'm not the biggest fan of the growling that she does in One way or another and at least once in every other song in the album. Fruktansvärt dålig musik. Introspåret var okej, likaså hearts of glass som ändå håller. Den klyschiga one way or another kände man igen men fick en samtidigt att vilja skära sönder sina trumhinnor. En dålig start på den här hemsidan faktiskt. Ger det 4/10, återkommer helst inte.

Słuchanie albumu jest bardzo przyjemne. Z tego albumu bardzo dobrze znam jedną bardzo popularną piosenkę która znajduje się na wielu moich playlistach. Po odsłuchaniu go spodobało mi się kilka nowych. Głos wokalistki jest niesamowity, a zespół bardzo charakterystyczny.
Blondie's Parallel Lines is a decent, fun new wave album often brimming with character, largely thanks to Debbie Harry's personality shining through her spunky vocals. The album comprises fairly consistent pop rock throughout but seems to be the kind of record that's made by its hits; no song is bad, but everything aside from a handful of standout tracks feels a little samey and ultimately forgettable, one punchy song blending into the next without truly distinguishing itself. The album's aforementioned highlights stand as opener 'Hanging on the Telephone,' 'Pretty Baby,' and mega-hits 'One Way or Another' and 'Heart of Glass.' Blondie is no doubt a talented group of musicians, but aside from a few fun tracks, this album is merely palatable. This is probably one that hit a lot harder on release than it does decades later, but its most well-known tracks still hold up well. This would ideally get a 2.5 stars (low 2 / high 3), but that's not an option here so I'll round down. Rating: ~4.5/10 _____ Album 9 / 1001+

There are pretty solid and thrilling songs in here, but at the end of the album I was waiting it for it to end -not a good sign. I have been guided by my intuition and emotions rather than a rational analysis of the melody, lyrics, whatever the hell is supposed to make an album 'good'. Perhaps this is an insult to my intelligence, but throughout these days in which I have listened to these different albums I have noticed a lack of enthusiasm and vivacity in songs. I am not only writing about Blondie, but I want music to excite and make me feel the widest, sharpest, and deepest parts of my own self, and unfortunately this album could only capture a fraction of an atom of a glimpse of that in a couple of songs. I am not a critic nor a musician, but I am someone who desires to encounter an album that can shake me to my core. Is that too much to ask?

This is just kinda boring. Yeah alright fun 70s rock. It has a woman so it gets a pass. I mean good music but just kinda unremarkable. Idk just I don't care. It's not anything crazy. A little bit musical esque. If you told me this was a rejected grease soundtrack I'd believe you. Some hits definitely just not much else. I'm going to be honest, the first 2 songs were really annoying. I think it's the vocals, they're very bombastic and repetetive. Since they're well known songs I was surprised I didn't care for them. Picture this was really good, very much enjoyed that. Fade away has interesting sounds but not a lot of substance. Pretty Baby is meh. Nothing special. Same for the next song. It's more heavy and energetic, but still. There's a lot of boring throwaway songs on here. Sunday girl is lovely. Heart of glass is really good. The last 2 songs are ehh. Mixed bag here. Mostly mid with a few diamonds. Not essential.
I'm the problem, this just wasn't for me
A couple iconic songs and a list of girl power music - a bit reminiscent of GoGo girls (who came after) in many places! Likeable.

I was exposed to Blondie in the early 80s and so I don't think I ever heard this whole album, which came out when I was 9, although I certainly was familiar with the radio play given to "One Way or Another" and "Heart of Glass". I'm a little surprised by the pop sound of so many songs on this album, many are "tamer" than what I think of with this band. Besides the two singles and "I'm Gonna Love You Too", I wasn't crazy about this album.

This record tries to answer if a moderately okay new wave/pop punk record can be saved by having 1-2 bangers. The answer is sort of. You are listening and One Way Or Another just slams, but maybe that's just jingle staying power. The record does improve by the time we get to heart of glass, but it never reaches the same heights. I like the sound, and having a female vocalist is a nice addition to the other brit pop records. However, it still remains samey through most of it, and I never got a sense of what they were meaning.

Debbie Harry’s voice is undeniably impressive, but Parallel Lines doesn’t fully land for me. It feels overly polished, leaning toward commercial appeal rather than offering something truly bold or innovative. The same happens with The Police: technically sharp, but the records often lack the raw force or originality that would make them more compelling
Definitely an iconic album however one that I feel sounds particularly dated nowadays. From the throwback to the1950s rock and roll cliches to the grating sound of what sounds like a Casio keyboard synth playing overlapping Melodies, this album has some clear standout hits such as heart of glass, hanging in the telephone and one way or another l. However the resto of the album songs sound like a lack of effort has been giving to them and were more filler than anything else. I have always thought I liked blondie but perhaps I like there selected songs but maybe they lack a back catalogue that really gets me going although I will absolutely be putting that to a test outside of the list 4.5/10

I am not really a huge fan of Blondie. I find their music is always so radio friendly and lacking any real substance, just very generic 70s/80s music that I associate with cringey film montages. I think in general though, I find the pop rock genre a bit shallow and went in already not loving it. Technically, the production on this is good in terms of it being super polished, but I think it leans too much into being accessible, and you can tell saleability was the main priority, making it very forgettable in the process. I don’t think vocals are particularly special either and could be easily replicated. Lyrics are prudent, sticking to generic themes focusing on catchiness and lacking depth. I’m sure this album was influential in its own right, hence the tonnes of great reviews, but it just wasn’t my thing. Despite being catchy and well produced, I just thought it prioritised accessibility over depth.

It was 80s vibes which i dont really like and thats why i didnt listen to the whole album but i did save one song to a playlist to give another chance and recognize some famous songs so it was pretty cool.
To be honest, I just wasn’t into this. Iconic band and songs. But really for me I didn’t think it was up there. I’ve never been a huge blondie fan anyway but, yeah, something wasn’t engaging with me on this one. Hanging on the telephone is probably the one i listened to a few times.

Eh. I respect the snark and the riffs but every song is the same take on generic garage rock except for the disco song that is cooler than 85% of radio disco at the time. It's a perfectly acceptable album but it doesn't really move the needle a whole lot. Debbie Harry is cool but overall pretty bland.
340 albums in, and I have grown to at least appreciate genres that I hadn't given much thought to previously. The biggest holdout so far is New Wave. A couple of recognizable songs here that I've never been a fan of. There wasn't anything to change my mind about this genre.
Crazy how a few of these songs are so fucking good and so popular, and the rest are so fucking mid. As an album, not the best. But the couple singles on here slap. 2.5
Not a huge fan of this. To me it kinda epitomises everything I don’t enjoy from the 70s-90s. I felt the lyrics were fairly corny, uninspiring, rhyme schemes predictable. Similarly the chord progressions and melodies followed a similar pattern, predictable and corny. The vocal performance had a lot of conviction but felt like it was pushing a little hard and was over the top- which stylistically I wasn’t into. The beach rock feel wasn’t a winner for me. Taste wise not into it. The synths and electric pianos were interesting at times. Nice enough analogue mix- no complaints there but also nothing inspiring. Nice to place those well known songs in a context- heart of glass and such. But also don’t feel strongly about those songs either. I don’t know why but this reminds me of cruise ship music. Music they’d perform on cruise ships.
