Reviews (page 12 of 14)
I respect it. I do
Only a few catchy melodies, spectacular instrumentals but didn’t love the songs themselves. Couldn’t stand the singer. Would give 2.5 stars but feeling generous
The Clash is fantastic. Lot of good music comes out of London.
Hyvää albumia tradeillassa ja pyöräillessä karjaan yössä ei paljoa tässä kuitenkasa huomatti sitten noh
3☆/5 09.16.2024
Un tanto pesado al final. Le hubiera dado un 4 si no.
I think every song by The Clash is very much the same song but I liked this album a lot more than I thought I would, so I guess that makes it pretty good
I'm not a fan of punk, and this site has made that clearer than ever, but for some reason I can tolerate The Clash better than most punk groups. Still, though, this one took me a while to get through, and I had this paused for ages, just because I'd rather listen to styles I'm actually into! This is the second Clash album I've got on here (the first was their self titled) and at first I thought this was going to be way worse. The first few songs were really annoying, and seemed more polished than their self titled (was it their debut? I can't remember...), which in this case wasn't a good thing. However, later on in the track list there were several songs I really liked, and in the end I felt positively towards the album and that I liked it more than the other album. It's still basically punk, but there are other influences in there as well now. You really get the sense that the guys are having fun even as they tackle serious subject matter. The lyrics were also really good, although sometimes it could be a little hard to tell what they were singing about. It seemed like they kept singing about hypocrisy in the music industry, and I liked that, but according to Wikipedia that's not the case. The songs I thought were about that.... weren't. Oh well. Highlight: Lost In The Supermarket. Honestly it was a great song, with really well written, thoughtful lyrics.
To be honest I think this is just a fine and simple punk album. I can understand how in 1979 this was a banger since it was early on in the genre, but for my first listen in 2024 I just felt like this album was decent. I didn’t find anything super impressive about it, and at just over an hour long, it definitely overstayed its welcome.
Loved the composition Couldn't get into it
I expected to like this one more :(
I liked this album quite a bit. Even though I expected more from the Clash. Not saying this album is bad at all. Haven't had a single classic album (in my eyes) this week. I hope next week will be awesome. 3 stars for "London Calling".
london calli g rieeese banger. brand new cadillac sehr rockabilly aber cool. sochli hässig aber nöd ungrichtet. haha jimmy jazz isch lustig es isch echt so en swing mit walking bass und so aber halt rocksolo giti. hateful sötti de text glaub besser lose aber lustige song. rudie cant fail isch reggae :( nöd sooo geil. spanish bombs cooli chords. guuete song. the right profile au sehr cool, genauso wieni mer clash vorstell. triibende rhythmus hässigi vocals guete kritische text. umeschreie im refrain. lost in the supermarket gfallt mer au recht, sehr relatable. clampdown sehr cool soundtechnisch de bass isch allgemein sehr geil. riese fills. uuh jetz macht d gitarre so single note funky stuff ziiimli cool. guns of brixton isch wieder reggae aber glaub linke scheiss? wrong em boyo isch wieder en retro ding und denn macheds neu und s wird sochli ska. ok weird. seeeehr UK new wave ska. meh. death or glory gfallt mer besser, rockiger. immerno seehr basic rock aber het öppis mit chli hässige lyrics. kola kola nix brunders. the card cheat isch defür wieder seehr geil. lovers rock au no cool aber scho immer s glich. four horsemen checki glaub nöd. min vater hetmer irgendwenn mol gseit wie legendär das album seg, aber bin glaub z wenig brit zums voll checke. im not down isch wieder super catchy und seeehr cool. revolution rock het müese nomel en reggae song sii? train in vain mega disco? meeega cool. schellechranz immer guet. tönt irgendwie bitz andersch als de rest vom album. isch glaub au böd plant gsi dases ufem album isch sondern als einzelni singe.
London Calling was nothing like i was expecting. From it's album art, i expected a much heavier album out of this (Like come on, there is an electric bass being destroyed there, what screams heavy album more than that?) But it seems that this one is pretty unique with all of it's influences. There is everything from some fast rock-out sort of stuff to some more i guess British sounding music (I can't think of a better word for it) and also some Mexican Fiesta sounding music. These all worked pretty well and help this album be better than this band's self titled album. This album isn't the greatest thing ever but it does it's job as well as it can. Best Song: Train in Vain (Stand By Me) Worst Song: Jimmy Jazz
I couldn't decide what I liked more - that I thought this album was okay, or that my son really loved it. I really enjoyed the variety. 3/5
When I saw the glowing reviews of this album, I was naturally quite excited to give it a listen. However, to my surprise, I had trouble differentiating between different songs- the album just felt like one hour-long song. It was good music, just all very similar.
really like the first half of the album, less bothered with the second half
Having spent my life having old heads tell me that the Clash are one of the best punk bands, and that London calling is one of the greatest punk albums ever, I have been socially shamed into nodding my head and agreeing. It's not true. The Clash are massively overrated and this album isn't even their best.
Typical punk rock.
Mun mielestä tässä on aika paljon filleriä - joskin nekin kaikki biisit ovat biiseinä ihan hyviä. Kaikki perustuvat kyllä hokemille, mikä käy vähän tylsäksi tunnissa. Eli siksi osa kuulostaa filleriltä. Kiva tasapaino kuitenkin levyn kummallakin puoliskolla (a-puoli kyl paljo iskevämpi).
good, classic, punk album
I mean, it’s the Clash, and the hits are legend. But the rest is non hit stuff sung by the Clash rather than something I’d want to hear again.
Listenable for sure with a couple of stand out tracks
These guys are punk, but not punk. Multiple styles represented on this album. They are set apart from the other bands of their time and place. London Calling is my favorite on here.
The Clash isn’t my favorite but it was fine.
Solid early punk album.
This was much more "friendly" and mainstream music than I remembered. I was expecting something more angry, loud and harsh. I liked it and I'd listen again. 3.5/5
I have struggled with this album over the years, it feels a bit overlong and repetitive.. but let's try again. Still the same... I can see why people like this, but for it gets rather repetitive rather quickly
Dai dai bellino ma l’hype è esagerato
Ja. Hörbares Album.
Overall this is fine, not necessarily my cup of tea.
I liked a few more songs than I expected. Ranges from ska reggae to typical punk to post punk. 3.5/5
London calling, das waren noch Zeiten ...
I’m not sure how I feel about this album. I’ve never been a huge clash fan, I like some songs but not huge on most of there music. I’ve heard this album before and didn’t much care for it. This time I was surprised to find myself not hating it. There’s not much I will return to but I didn’t mind most of the songs, and still enjoyed the songs I already liked. Best songs are Train in Vain, Rudy Can’t Fail, Revolution Rock, and Lost in the Supermarket.
Interesting. Genuinely punk. Engaging blend of genres. But not my thing. Learned some about history too.
I think The Clash falls into that bucket of “I really like the songs I like”, and then everything else is just alright. I also find especially for The Clash that there isn’t a ton of variation. I found that this album did have a few tracks that did stick out, namely Train in Vain and Jimmy Jazz. Overall, this album as a whole is fine, but shout out to the few songs that stand out.
This is yet another album that I feel I’m *supposed to* like, but do I? Not particularly. I honestly felt pretty neutral about it.
London Calling is best song. Album cover is more iconic than the music.
I don’t know if I would go as far as saying this is the best album ever recorded or that it defines The Clash as the best band of all time, but I’ll admit it was alright! Overall, they did have a wide range of musical styles, and to be honest, everything from this point on is where I enjoyed The Clash the most. Although The Clash is known for their punk roots, their punk tracks are my least favorite songs. It’s everything else on this album that I enjoyed the most.
Meh, guess it's alright, one or two great songs.
Some nice songs
A very good album. It was fun to listen to, especially the title song 'London Calling'. That's one of my top songs. 3/5
A little better than the other punk albums but ultimately no more than average.
This was a disappointment to me I must admit. The rockabilly I liked but the reggae vibes just weren’t doing it for me. It all got a bit samey and long. London Calling is such a banger too. Oh well
Decent album, flows well, just not interesting to me.
The album is just to long and drawn out for me. I think that some of the songs are here are absolutly rootin, tooting and you best believe flootin. But with such a long album the majority of the songs on this record started to just sound the same. I enjoyed it overall though.
This album was not what I expected based off of the two songs I know from it. It was an enjoyable listen through, but I won't be adding it to my normal rotation.
One of the greatest British Rock/Punk Bands. Train in Vain (Stand by Me) timeless!
# 235 : They've done a pretty decent job. I think Its OK, I could listen to it, but it was kind of ordinary for all the hype. Favourite Track : Train In Vain (Stand By Me)
Classic, but not my favorite style of music.
Yes, it's a good album and I enjoyed it, but I like my punk a little bit more ... punk.
“England called; they said you’re overrated.” Punk? Hardly. A couple of silver spoon babies acting tough, exposing societal flaws as if weren’t aware, as if they cared. It’s an age thing, not mine, but already done. Nothing to see here.
decent but forgettable
I'm not a huge fan of this band but the album wasn't too bad.
I liked it well enough. It had that early punk playfulness that I'm always fond of. But though I felt generally positive about the album overall, I can't say I was particularly fond of any individual song. It certainly wasn't as dynamic of an album as other contemporary ones, like Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables. The cover art is cool as hell though, and maybe there's more to dive into with the lyrics.
A fun punk album, I thought it was a bit too long but it had some bangers
Not great in terms of singing, but the music is not too bad.
Ironically, what apparently characterizes one of the best, if not the best, punk album of all time is how many non-punk tracks it features. I get it. Too much of a good thing and so on... But in true rebel fashion this principle is also immediately broken, considering the length of the album. Sadly, this is about the only instance in which I got something that resembles rebel/punk vibes. Besides all that: Solid album. Just not what I expected or what I like personally.
Prima. Begint lekker met London Calling en wordt erna weer heel Britpopperig
Was prima, beter dan ik had verwacht
Following the song “London Calling” is a nearly impossible task. So maybe don’t lead off the album with it? I think front loading the hit singles was common at the time? It’s lucky the album is as long as it is, weirdly, as it gives The Clash a chance to rebound from the steep drop off after the opener. “London Calling” actually came out a lot later than I had thought, and played a much different role in the history of The Clash and punk rock than I imagined. The first half of the album has a lot of very un-punky stuff, as the band was apparently moving a bit away from their punk roots. Lots of horns, with hints of ska and reggae. Bits of blues and rockabilly. But the punk tracks that become more prevalent on the second half are clearly where the band shines. I think my impression suffered a bit from the unexpected, and I feel like multiple listens might find some of my less favorite tracks growing on me.
I expected punk. I got a weird mishmash of other styles. Probably wont be revisiting this particular Clash album.
I really liked it. Super unique and a great variety. This album would have a ton of value in the 6 cd changer challenge. Multiple vibes and even genres throughout the album. This album felt like it took more risks and was more innovative than some of its contemporaries. At the same time, it had a handful of awesome hits. I’m a sucker for montage type songs and this album has them. A lot of the riffs are so familiar. I would like to see a family tree from this album of all the influences.
Coming in looking for punk and hearing influences from all different genres was a huge surprise. I liked the album, but there were parts that seemed to blend together in the middle. I also thought the bookending of London Calling and Train in Vain was a great way to start and end the album. And shoutout to the mid-2000s NCAA Football games for having great throwback hits on their soundtracks.
Pass me the pipe.
Went from 4 to 3 to 4 to 3
I think Rock is just not my genre. This was fine.
A punk band with semi-competent musicians, how original. Don't hate it but don't love it either.
6/10
Great album. I love how these genre-defining albums are always way softer and more melodic than I expect.
Hitovi su 5/5, al album je 3.5/5.
I can’t explain exactly why, but The Clash have always seemed to uptight to be taken seriously to me. I’m still not sure they’re not uptight, but it seemed like they were having fun on this one at least!
Some really great songs, Train In Vain Guns Of Brixton, In The Supermarket, Spanish Bombs etc but a few I personally find quite samey. Still very good though.
Classic stuff. Nothing radical but a good listen.
I never could get into the Clash. 3/5
London Calling is a album you listened to a lot in 1980 and thought it was great but when you start listening to it present day that 1979 was 45 years ago and it's extremely overrated and the only good songs are London calling and train in vain, which in themselves are pretty okayish. If I had to i'd listen to this album but not by choice. 3/5
Some interesting songs that clearly draw playfully on other genres.
Classic album. Great songs
I will acknowledge how diverse and rich this album is, but it's not my cup of tea. This album is probably amazing for someone else, but to me it's a labyrinth of random styles and I just have a hard time connecting.
It's good, but much too long.
Good music, this album just not all my vibe, but I do like the clash, and this album is good.
Some brilliant stuff here but like with many double/long albums suffers from ‘Use Your Illusion syndrome’. Could have been a shorter 5 star album but instead is a 3.5 star long album.
This was actually much more interesting a listen than I expected. I was expecting an album of back-to-back punk songs. My expectations were subverted. There was jazz, ska, funk etc. All in all not a cohesive album, and too long given the content. But not horrible. 3/5.
I was today years old when I listened to London Calling. I was a little underwhelmed. I think having heard so many rock stars state how great it is lead me to believe it would be the pinnacle of modern music, when it was just a decent album.
Idk actually like 3.5. I liked it more than The Rolling Stones album from yesterday. It’s still just TOO DAMN LONG. Why is a punk album over an hour and has 20 tracks? I can cut this down to nine or ten great tracks and this is an easy 4. You can hear ska coming from this sound, and I liked that.
I remember listening to this as a kid and loving it. Now I still like it but find it to be a mixed bag. I still think it's a good album but can be random at times.
That wasn’t bad, but I also wasn’t super engaged.
El sonido es fresco. La voz es rebelde y punk, lo que la hace interesante y llamativa, pero pierde en términos de buen gusto.
I like the albums influenced by this way more than I like this
some cool musical ideas, and their sound is good. not a huge fan of the vocals
I only knew 1 song on this album - the titular song. The album was okay.
I really wanted to love this album but it was just okay. I don’t know that I would choose any of the songs to listen to again although they weren’t bad. And I like the style of music and this genre but I just wasn’t feeling it.
I am groovin. It was good, got funky at some parts. Favorite is the opening track London Calling
Clash Some cool stuff on here. Definitely my favorite “punk” album we’ve heard. Good rhythm section for a punk band and I like how the albums has some variation of grooves and styles. Feels a bit long “lost in the super market” feels like it has a dozen chorus. Wish they had better vocalists and I think they probably could have cut some of those songs. I wanted to like it more and was into it in the beginning but found it tedious by lovers rock, but then Revolution Rock was cool. I was ready to give album like a 3. But then “Train in Vain” that song is great . Overall I do think the album might be a bit overrated. 3.5
2.5 - would’ve been a 3.5 if it weren’t a double album. An hour of this was too much for me. Is this punk? There were a few songs I liked alright but it’s all just kind of silly and stupid sounding to me. It is better sounding m than some other similar stuff we’ve had.
Musicalmente superiores. No lo compraria, lo escucho y me gusta. Gracias.
I like them you can tell they have character and have fun making their music
Best Songs: Clampdown, I'm Not Down Listen Again: Yes
Has a few good songs but I feel it is over hyped by many.
I enjoyed this one more than I thought I would.
Okay so like not my fave but still fun
Late 70s rock. Not bad, but nothing too interesting.
This reminds me of Dan Coats, who has undoubtedly been the main source of The Clash reaching my ears.
London Calling song is epic. Rest of album is a 3
Classic! but it falls off in the second half.
Monumental album, I get it, but it doesn't reach me in that way.
I've tried many times to love this album, but I have a hard time understanding why those songs are so great. The reggae/pop/new wave/ska vibe of this album is nice, I guess, but the songs themselves are kind of lame. I'm sorry... I'll give this a 3 stars because of peer pressure.
It’s ok. I just don’t really like the clash.
Not my fav Clash
duplicate
Didn't finish the album, not the biggest fan of The Clash but there were some hits in what I heard, 6 out of 10
I was a progressive rock fan in my late teens when this album was released. I was not overly enthralled by the punk scene or the music, generally speaking. However, I have a greater appreciation now for The Clash and this album after giving it a thorough listening. It’s actually remarkable how the punk scene was really retrospective to the U.K. mod scene and music of the mid-60’s. Overall, it was a pleasant listening experience.
The title track sets a high energy punk rock tone, but the album quickly branches out, bringing in more relaxed jazz and blues vibes. Was not expecting so many horn sections on this album which is pleasantly surprising. Almost every song consistently between 3 and 4 minutes length. The Clash are more upbeat than I had previously thought, and most of this album is so far removed from modern punk music that it's hard to even think of them as a punk band rather than a 70s folk group (especially on Train in Vain). Solid album overall, not many standouts between the first and last song but no clunkers either with a fun variety of sounds.
Solid 3. I was expecting more head thrashing and less lyric. I liked it.
Fun album, always viewed them as a Punk band but there sound spans many different influences and are more than just that. Some great Reggae and Ska sound as well as the classic songs I remembered off this album.
Listened to half of it, it’s pretty long. I enjoyed it, I think I would like it better the more I listen to it.
Rad album but not a fan of some of the reggae influences or whatever. But some obvious hits on here. More of a parts > whole situation
So so,
3.5
It was okay
It was alright
Easy British punk to listen to. Very distinct and notable sound.
Quite a bit I can say about this one. First, it was long. Also, it was varied. There was clearly a lot of varied musical influences here. Also the lyrics were pretty impactful. I didn’t find the lyric writing to be particularly good, but there was a variety of social and political commentary, as well as repeatededly using characters in the songs. Overall a pretty strong album. I kinda wanna try it again with good headphones to hear some of the small details. Low 4, maybe 3.5
A good example of actually enjoyable punk rock, coming from a person that does not enjoy this type of music typically
It’s ok, plus points for being a huge relief after listening to terrible Portishead
A landmark album, reflecting the mood of Britain in the late 1970s - at least that's how the album is viewed through the lens of history, by people who weren't there. In truth, most of Britain was indifferent to the Clash by 1979: they were an interesting diversion from the more musical sensibilities of Elvis Costello, the Police, and Joe Jackson. The only people taking them seriously were weekend anarchists and public-school poseurs. The real working class preferred the Mekons and Gang of Four. A notable work, but not the seismic artistic statement its reputation suggests.
you know what, i didn’t expect to like this as much as i do, but it’s pretty darn good and eclectic, there’s some songs i don’t care for, but then they grow on me or i just like them from the jump. idk if i’d listen to the whole album again, but i’d listen to individual songs for sure.
Liked this album enough! Pretty fun album with some less serious songs. Reminded me a lot of like early 2000’s pop-punk albums. Probably wouldn’t go back right away and listen again, but I did enjoy it!
This is supposed to be a landmark post-punk album. For me, it's just okay.
The Clash is one of those bands I've always thought was overhyped. There's just too much better punk and post-punk out there for me to want to listen to this.
“Punk”
This album has something for everyone: punk, pop, rock, jazz? Reggae? Ska? and a not insignificant amount of haunted house noises.
The title track, "London Calling", defined a generation, but the rest of the album - which is a strange mix of various musical styles - doesn't live up to the promises made by the title track.
Iconic cover it's true but I never bought into the Clash. Maybe I was in the wrong place at the wrong time? I bought 'Give Em enough rope' and loved that but 'London Calling' is all about the title track (part from maybe 'The guns of Brixton' which was ripped off for Dub be good to me.) and the rest are a bit nothingy. They had gone past their best by this time.
I enjoyed listening to the last clash album from the generator. It was better or at least more enjoyable than this one for me. London calling is a classic song but I prefer a handful of others so ultimately this album isn't my fave but likely a fan fave for others.
Some classics but too many duds to really enjoy
Es un muy buen disco. Tiene detallecitos que hacen la diferencia y aportan calidad. Pero es muy largo y sobre el final, se pone cansador y algo monótono.
The classics on here remain classics, but I was... pretty disappointed by a majority of the lengthy runtime here. The ska adjacent songs are an absolute bore, but the innovative punk tracks still hold up. 3/5
Probably did not give it a good listen, but very similar to other albums
London Calling // I’m Not Down //
My understanding is that The Clash were punk. London Calling is not a punk album, it’s much more than that. Pop, jazz, piano and obviously reggae influences are all over the album 7.4/10
I've tried to give this one more time based on reputation. After ~2.5 listens I don't think anything is going to seem more appealing than it did. The title track is very good and there's a few others that are pretty good. Overall I don't care that much for London Calling. If I was in the mood for a song with similar vibes it wouldn't be anything from this album. music: hated. (⌐■_■)
Ok,
Pretty good
I feel like all the 80s music I grew up on somehow came out of this album. All it's songs sounded so familiar. The more I listened to it the more I enjoyed the music, you can hear the band's raw talent bursting through. Still, I don't understand how Rolling Stone rated this among the top ten albums ever made. It's good, but not that good.
I like it..
Die hits bleiben hits. Bei den anderen; take it easy mit dem saxophon…
A lot of talent shines through in this; it feels like every track has a goal and it’s executed well. Everything comes together cohesively and it sounds much cleaner than some of the other rock I’ve been listening to (purposeful or not). I liked the variety in genre influences – it kept listening fresh (the reggae was very unexpected). Albums like these are the best chance for getting me to listen to more punk and hard rock. 6.5/10
For a punk album, this was pretty good. Usually they're pretty rough, but this was mostly enjoyable. I could listen to more. 3.5/5
It was ok I guess... no songs in particular stood out to me. Fun album regardless.
Ei kamala, jos nyt ei hyväkään. Sentään ei ärsyttänyt kuunnella tätä loppuun asti. 3/5
Throwback Friday for me. Was not my genre back in 1970-something, but a very good listen for today
Jimmy jazz I liked as soon as it started, melody is nice. cool to know this is some OG British punk rock, hateful kinda sells it Rudie can't fail has a pretty chorus that felt a little RCHP-y lost in the supermarket is a jam guns of brixton has a cool dub feel to it wrong em' boyo reminds me of streetlight a bit death or glory has a cool hook, drums feel good in it stand by me is a classic
I like much of the album but not something I will come back to listen too that much. I'm not down I had not noticed before and I really like that, the remaster sounds great too one of those If i could give 3.5 I would.
London Calling, Brand New Cadillac, And Train in Vain. The rest - meh
London Calling is the third album by English rock band the Clash. This is a double album that combines the band's traditional punk rock sound with their growing interest in new wave and rock & roll. Critically acclaimed, it's considered one of the greatest albums of all time - especially within the punk genre - and it's been certified gold in Canada & France, and platinum in Italy, the UK, & the US. London Calling has been inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame, sits near the top of many "best of album lists", and is one of the most influential classic punk rock albums of all time. You can't get more rock & roll then this album. London Calling is an awesome album that will entertain listeners the whole duration of its hour-long double album. This may be the epitome of the punk rock golden years, and I'm glad I had the chance to listen to it.
This album is really good and revolutionized the ganre
They have a very specific recognizable sound. I imagine if I grew up around this period, with their new/unique sound, I would have been a fan. Some songs sound very similar - same structure (?) as their more well known songs- I.e- I fought the law. Think some of the songs could grow on me, others I can appreciate the composition/message, but they sound a little generic to a modern/uncultured listener. I'd still say the music has aged well. Reggae/Ska/Punk-rock influences. First listen 6/10-better than average. Could climb on repeat listens.
Like if a british punk band decided to be a reggae band instead. Somehow it works
Overrated but still monumental
Remastered doesn't sound as good a original
It was a ok.
Haven't listened to the album in full before. The title track is a snarling masterpiece that you *all* know already of course and the rest is........ kinda underwhelming until Train in Vain.
Lyssnat på den flera gånger, har absolut sina guldkord.
My friend likes this a lot. I don't really know why.
Decent album with a few good songs
I have to be missing something, right? Like, there's no way I like their debut MORE than this? Well, I guess I do, but I reslly don't know why. I mean, this one is decent, but even the good songs I can't remember after finishing them, and his voice feels really grating when not doing proper punk tunes. There is enough here to be enjoyable, but that's probably because it's a double album that goes much longer than it needed to. Really mixed on this way, but I for sure don't see the hype.
okii 7.5/10
I think this album's just a little too close to Ska for me to really love it, but it ain't bad.
Better than I expected
The album grew on me as it went on...
Interesting, varied, doesn't quite do it for me
Punk lyrics sprinkled over various genres including reggae, rockabilly, blues, glam, and more. Can’t say I’m personally a huge fan of the album as it doesn’t really tickle my fancy sonically, but it’s easy to tell The Clash was definitely on to something interesting here. Favorites: London Calling, Lost in the Supermarket, Clampdown, Train in Vain (Stand by Me) Least favorites: I would say Death or Glory but the lyrics are really good so none.
You know me, punk is not my genre. But I do enjoy the Clash and they have some iconic hits here.
B- London Calling 5 Brand New Cadillac 2 Jimmy Jazz 3 Hateful 4 Rudie Can't Fail 3 Spanish Bombs 4 The Right Profile 3 Lost In the Supermarket 2 Clampdown 2 The Guns of Brixton 4 Wrong 'Em Boyo 3 Death or Glory 3 Kola Kola 2 The Card Cheat 3 Lover's Rock 3 Four Horsemen 2 I'm Not Down 4 Revolution Rock 3 Train In Vain (Stand By Me) 3 Good work The Clash, you're not The Trash.
The highs on this record are very high. The lows are filler at best. It goes on for a little too long, but ends on a high note with 'Train In Vain'.
The variety of styles on this album is pretty fun, although some of the more rockabilly and straight forward rock style songs weren't my favorite. Never been super into the Clash, but still enjoyed this overall.
Some catchy songs but overall I couldn't connect with their anger and melody.
The title track is one of the best songs of all time, but I don't really care for the rest of the album. I think the genre change made sense for the band, and the exploration of different styles within this one record is impressive. But I just cannot get behind Britpop. Plus, many of the references are time and country specific, so I can't really enjoy them.
Wasn’t bad, but I honestly expected more. It was more tame than I thought it was going to be that again I’m not super familiar with the clash lost in the supermarket. Always bangs. The transition from four horsemen and I’m not down as smooth as butter. I’m noticing a trend with these past couple albums where they all have a really solid back half
I liked some but didn't like all, it was alright but maybe just not my type.
This one took me a long time to get through, resulting in a long pause from this project altogether. While it was bad, pretty tiring to get through. Maybe one day I’ll like this kind’ve punk but it just didn’t take.
3,5
Its good but could have been better in my opinion! Maybe a few more listens?
Somehow I expected something different, but I'm surprised in a good way
it definitely started off mid but got better
The Clash's London Calling Somewhat surprised me. Thought it would be a little harder rock/punk, however the majority of the double album sounded more like a pop rock/pop punk album. It is clear to see that there are many other albums that have taken influence from The Clash. Best: London Calling Worst: The Right Profile 3.5 stars
The album where The Clash came of age (i.e., not just another punk band, but rather a punk band with depth). That said, I still think The Clash is better experienced these days through compilation albums. There's too much fluff in the album.
a cover speaks a thousand words
As an album it’s great energetically. I love how each song goes into each other but that’s also a con because sometimes it gets a bit too repetitive and boring. It also drags a little bit in the second half and loses some momentum. Overall though it has great replay value. There’s not a lot I can see myself coming back to individually but as an album it will be getting a lot of replays.
Rating is only based on Train in Vain because I did not listen to the album. 3.5/5
Given how iconic the title track and album cover are, I'm both surprised that I didn't know more of this, and surprised that I didn't find it that interesting. Possibly a grower though, if I gave it a few more listens.
This album has made me realize that maybe punk isn't for me 🤷♂️
I really like the first song a lot. I have listened to the first song several times and was excited to listen to this album, hoping there would be more of that dark punk sound. Instead the majority of the album is happy and almost silly at times The rest of the album was still good, even though I didn’t like the ska (is that what it is?) type songs as much. Still easily one of the best punk records, if not the best. Probably better than the Sex Pistols, and definitely way better than the Ramones This album could grow on me still, so I should listen to it again sometime
Atypical. This album has such a variety of influences. Musically and vocally superior punk.
pretend this is a 3.5/5
Not my cuppa but fun
Wow. So many recognizable styles/genres incorporated into this album. Punk, ska, reggae, new wave, to name a few. Enjoyable listening on a sunny afternoon in early March.
The b side was actually really good.
Un tanto pesado al final. Le hubiera dado un 4 si no.
I expected more out of this. London Calling is incendiary, Guns of Brixton has that iconic intro, and of course the album cover is one of the greatest pieces of rock art out there. But I felt nothing for the rockabilly influence and - perhaps this is another case where you had to be there at the time - I didn't feel inspired by much else. I'm sure it's me not you.
This is obviously a quintessential, influential, landmark punk album that everyone loves but honestly I wasn’t super impressed. It’s miles better than most of the punk albums I’ve gotten on here but there still weren’t many songs aside from the first and last track and hateful that I was really struck by. Maybe I just prefer the more sneering, aggressive Sex Pistols because a lot of this was honestly kinda lame. I can definitely see this having a death grip on like all of the 18-25 demographic in 1979 though
In the 9 days it's been since my last Clash exposure nothing much has changed in my opinion towards them. This album sounded better but dragged onnnnnnnn. Sigh. Please, no more punk for a while?
I thought this was okay. It felt like they kind of all blended together.
Oh, the world's most over-rated band. Good cover though. I own this on vinyl (from back when records were cheap and easy to pick up second hand) and on in the expanded CD form (cheap from Cash Converters). Have tried so many times to get into it and surprisingly this was the time where I found myself enjoying it. Maybe it was listening to it on noise-cancelling headphones? But then I got a bit bored in the second half
I still don't get the fuss, though there's some cracker tunes on here.
Honestly some bops in here. Surprised myself
good music. Different than what I expected. Different styles (ska, punk, pop-ish too).
it’s not specifically bad but there’s just nothing really special about it. i actually liked a lot of the songs too but again it wasn’t anything special ig
Less punky, more groovy than I expected. Good variety of instrumentation though the album (some horns, I think?). Recognized the last song
I like the bass, but the vocals are kinda unintelligible
London Calling is such an iconic track the rest of the album is fun the listen to and I'll say Lost in the Supermarket is my fave from that bunch.
interesting little album. nothing really caught my attention but it was still an enjoyable listen
Never been a huge fan, but it was okay.
Not much to say other than that the hooks are great
decent, like lost in the supermarket. train in vain is amazing
Never really got into The Clash. A bit average imho
Don’t think I’ve ever sound down and listened through this whole album. Also don’t think I will again. Don’t get me wrong, love the clash and love the big hits on this album. But that’s enough for me really.

The good tracks I've heard a million times although I'll never get tired of Lost in the Supermarket. I bet at the time it came out it was the equivalent to when The Strokes released Is This It?
I don't hate the clash, I think the title track is a legit good song, but this was way too long for that "not quite punk anymore, not really new wave yet" sound. The UK music scenes just don't interest me, I guess. 3/5.
Dit leek me altijd zo'n toffe band om eens in te duiken als ik tijd had, maar dat blijkt ijdele hoop.
Hier had ik echt veel meer van verwacht. Zeker niet vervelend maar uiteindelijk een magere 3 sterren.
Leuk!
This album has the best final B-side track in “Train in Vain (Stand by me)” of any album I’ve ever heard. The whole album is a “reverse hit sandwich”, with the meat acting as buns and the middle being a bit soft.
This album is kind of all over the place :-)
Für BritPunk okay.
Probably every genre of music except punk! But accomplished and catchy throughout. 3.5/5
listened to again better than i originally remember, but still kinda ho-hum for me
Ive heard the title song many times, but not the rest. It was pretty good.
The most listenable old punk on this list so far, and probably only because it's just The Beatles with more distortion and weird vocals.
Day 3: London Calling - The Clash - listened at 1 am on the next day - london is calling me at this hour - punky sound - kinda rock n’ roll at times - low effort voice but it fits - jimmy jazz moodswitch, is it a beatles album? - like the feeling of all of them singing - feels oh so british - don’t really like punk rock - repetitive drums - favorite: Lover’s Rock - 5.5/10
enjoyable!
It was alright. Voice was not my thing
Not bad, but not awesome either.
Pretty nice!! I like the way they talk lol.
Some good songs
Very classic, great time
It has now been 8 out of 9 albums in a row from the UK. I'll explain below exactly why that's a problem. First, as far this album goes, we have the anthemic title track the album and indeed The Clash are so known for, that sounds VERY different from the rest of the album. What follows are two disks worth of second-wave ska and rockabilly. As others have said, the songs feel samey and different at the same time. For me they range from very good (Jimmy Jazz, The Guns of Brixton) to the skippable (Spanish Bombs, Koka Kola, Lover's Rock). There is enough quality here for an easy 4, but I think this may be a case of too much of a good thing. The second disk just drags a bit too much. Now for the UK problem, I really dig 2-nd wave ska, and indeed 3-rd wave too, but how is it possible that this list completely ignores ANY and ALL 1-st wave? Don't go searching for The Skatalites, they're not featured. Jimmy Cliff? I checked, not here. Toots & the Maytals? Prince Buster? Desmond Dekker? Forget it! A shame, a downright shame.
Was decent.
Ska aikakauden tuotos. Levy on ylipitkä: jos tää olis tiivistetty tuplan sijaan puoleen olis kysees vitun härkänen platta! 3/5
liked the music
Oh fuck yes I have to say... There was more filler than I remembered. Death or Glory is still the best song ever though
I actually hadn't heard a lot of these except for the first and last song, which were great. The rest of the album was pretty meh, tbh.
Not really my cup of tea.
It sounded okay, but I expected more from this supposedly classic album.
Fine. Never caught me. Double albums are a chore sometimes.
Think we can file The Clash under 'bands I don't like as much as everyone else'. This is definitely better than the other one that we listened to, but it's not a showstopper for me. Title track is a classic, but it's pretty much all downhill from there (although Train In Vain is also great to finish it off). A lot more variety than the previous album (which is good) and it hangs together quite nicely, but loses points for being too long with too much filler. 3/5.
Bass stands out, very groovy
Punky rock. London Calling is an absolute belter, but some other good stuff here too
Genre: New Wave 3/5 The Clash are the punk/post-punk/new wave outfit who found themselves as the figureheads of nearly an entire movement. London Calling represents something bigger than just a double LP released by these Brits, it was a ripple in music that was felt for quite some time. You can hear Dexys Midnight Runners, REM, and Green Day before they had even showed their faces, you can hear 2-Tone and other different "world" influences making their way into the music, a big time 80s trend, and you have what is one of the best rock singles of the 70s, even if it was at midnight of the decade, the title track, London Calling. But, for me, beyond the absolutely ass-ripping opener, the rest of the album left me expecting and wanting much more. This has never been an album that I had taken a deep, deep dive into until now, and what I found upon my dive was a rather lackluster collection of semi-interesting pop experiments. I can hear why this is heralded, it hits the right 80s-listener's buttons I'm sure, but beyond a few decent tracks, this album is littered with over-long, over-produced songs that beg to be revised and massaged. I guess that's supposed to be the draw, but prior double LPs that weren't afraid of their mistakes (The White Album, Electric Ladyland, Physical Graffiti) still landed better for me.
At least a 3. Probably a 4, but I’d need to spend some more time with it. More ska elements than I would have guessed.
its the one with the famous cover kinda funny how the cover doesn't match the music London calling and lost in the supermarket are good
Was easier to listen to than I expected. Thought it was going to be “harder.”
Favorites: London Calling Death or Glory The Guns of Brixton
First time listen, but have heard multiple songs on the radio through my years. I thought The Clash was a punk band. This album does not scream punk to me. I found it a enjoyable listen. Above Average musicians.
Classic tracks aside this album earns points for how varied and experimental it's willing to be - no two songs seem to rely on the same structure or tempo, and as a result things stay relatively fresh throughout the LP. While the guitar tone could be a bit more pronounced in the mix and the tracks a tad more memorable, the project still sounds modern and engaging enough to warrant a re-listen.
really fun album. I liked the energy and the instrumentals. definitely feels like one of the OG ska albums but I don't know in what situation I'd seek this album out again.
Lost in the supermarket est très bonne. Les lignes de basses sont intéressantes. Au final je peux comprendre que c'est un album populaire mais j'ai vraiment aimé ça, je pense pas que je vais vraiment l'écouter à nouveau.
p436. 1979. 3 stars. Strange mix of punk and garage rock and reggae and ska. Vague Springsteen undertones, which isn't a bad thing. Excellent production values. However... don't like Joe Strummer's voice, and other than title track, nothing stands out. Goes for on far too long - it's rare for a double album to actually hold up without spotting the filler, and this fails the test. Saggy in the middle. Can see why this was influential in the punk era - far more sophisticated that most of the offerings of the time - but it hasn't aged well. Would have made an excellent single album. Glad I've listened to it but just doesn't do it for me.
clássico que me lembra friends mas nao é o estilo de som que considero bom de ouvir
Some very recognizable.
a classic of its time, a smorgasbord of rock and roll, rockabilly, bluebeat, reggae, ska, soulful ballads and poppy punk. 3 stars because its good but I don't need to hear it again - there were no surprises hiding in there for me.
Not my thing, but it was a surprising album from a punk band: musically very competent and a broad range of styles. Definitely not your average punk band.
Really great
I like the music and the general vibe, but I can only endure the singer's voice for a short while. I would listen to them in a mix.
London Calling is an amazing song! A lot of the rest of the album kind of all melded together for me and was too long in my opinion, but an enjoyable listen with a great punk rock sound
I enjoyed London Calling a lot but I don't think I remember any specifics from the following songs. They weren't bad but nothing really stuck out about them.
London Calling is still stuck in my head this AM. I like the energy but probably not an album I'll listen to on repeat.
Classic.
Sheer variety of influences are interesting but can be jarring. Length of album doesn't help. Title track is still an all timer, along with "Lost in the Supermarket"
Not even my 2nd favorite Clash album...
Really fun and engaging album. Very simple instrumentals, not a ton of creativity musically but vocally and lyrically definitely unique. 7/10.
A lot of people consider it peak punk. I don't not a big fan of the sound. Definitely prefer the American punk scene more so than the British one. Solid album just not super for me.
Брекзит колс
classic
it's meh
Vrolijke engelse muziek met leuke melodietjes. Ik vind het wel aangenaam om te luisteren. Het orgeltje op de achtergrond geeft ook iets speciaals. Geinig. ***
One really well known song. The rest were alright.
Interesting dive into the evolution of 70s/80s punk. A little repetitive.
Notable: First post-punk album. Pulls in some rock, roots, ska, .... Highlights: London Calling * Brand New Cadillac Lover's Rock - funky breakdown midway
Hadn't ever given this a front-to-back listen. I felt underwhelmed, especially given how iconic this album is. Felt a little bloated with songs and not super focused, but I did like a good amount of what was on here.
Some dope songs, pretty long album.
I can't say I was familiar with the Clash before listening to this but I feel like this definitely sounds like the time it was created in. Was in for some heavy head bopping. I feel like moshing. I have NO idea what they're saying.
I like my punk a bit more bouncy, but some nice tunes. Liking the ska influenced tracks
I like the singers voice and the general energy, though some of it seemed a bit fillery.
nfm
Nice to hear a whole album
Good fun album, has some really memorable tracks
