Reviews (page 7 of 7)

Really was just kinda there.

Nonsense electro-prog, with way too many bonus tracks. Even the core album is poor, only one or two songs that evoke any emotion (other than "is it done yet?"). Not my kind of thing at all, really not sure this deserves to be on the list.

I really thought I’d like this more. Godfathers of synth pop so aill give them that and a couple of good songs, but not an album I’d go back and listen to much, if at all.

Interesting

Outside of the context of the scene this music was made for, it's hard to understand it. I just don't get it.

The album was alright. Synth poppin to make the 80’s proud.

One is a classic

Early 80's vibes but nothing that jumped out

A little out there - there are poppier songs that are pleasant but they go on orchestral interludes that just don't vibe

New Wave is totally up my alley, but this was not for me. Kinda boring, not very creative, just heavy synthesizers.

Ок за музику у позадини, ништа довољно дистинктивно. 4/10

I recognise a few tunes but not really my thing

Ordinary Monotonous Disappointing

I appreciated it. Not crazy about it though.

Had trouble getting into and enjoying this and I kind of like bands in this sound even. 2/5

Pretty new genre for me. I liked the initial songs but I lost interest after a few songs.

More electronica that I just dont vibe with, but I'm learning how big this genre is in the UK

Cat: dancey and weird and goth

I didn't hate this but particularly as compared with other albums on this list, I don't get why it's relevant.

Atmospheric pop, not too interesting to me

If you'd like to discuss architecture or morality, do call in.

Welp, I guess vacation's over because I did not enjoy this. Nothing particularly catchy nor interesting. If you put it on at a party, I might not notice, but if I did, I'd be mad at you. The nerve! Next!

These songs all blended together. Dull.

Not a fan overall, but I felt it had potential. 80s synthy/dancy kinda sounds.

Im not in for this album rn

This is so fucking boring

Didn't do it for me personally. Was probably cutting edge when it came out but now seems a little dated and dull

Feels a little pretentious. Starts a little noisy with synth-pop elements, but eventually drawls out to long, repetitive instrumentals. Kind of had me in the beginning, but eventually lost the flavor, and lost me as well. Favorite track: "She's Leaving"

Some songs I really liked but overall didn’t enjoy as an album especially the first song, truly awful

early new wave, ok but not that engaging to listen to

New Stone Age opens the album on an interesting note. There is this pervasive atmosphere permeating these songs. Even upbeat ones like Souvenir have this wispy, ghost like textures. The banging on an empty grain silo at the end of Sealand is really tonally upsetting because its just so damn loud. the rest of the album is sort of a wash out for me.

That was not the worst album of the list. Here, that's all of the positive things I could write about it. Additionally, some more experimental and instrumental parts of album were pretty interesting, but usual post punk stuff is terrible. That's all.

Not for me, too 80s

this band name and album name are quite the mouthful. orchestral manoeuvres in the dark (shortened to OMITD) created a very specific ambient tone on architecture and morality. this album is a great example of creating music that flows seamlessly, one song into the next, while remaining different songs. all that being said, my overall reaction was "eh." omitd's album is easy enough to listen to, but kind of boring.

Definitely not as bad as I expected (given the week I’ve had). I think it was a little longer for my liking and a tad snoozy but I think all in all it was pretty good and lifting?

It's a bit stiff, innit...? More 80s than most other 80s synth bands, it's just too cold, too plodding, too fey, too mid-tempo bland. Not objectionable or bad whatsoever, but it sounds like synth music made for pre-schoolers. Any song would be ok in context of some period piece television show but any 4 song segment of this is exhausting let alone an hour.* Not my fave. Gimme Echo or New Order instead. 4/10 2 stars. *[n.b. i listened to the extended version - didn't know the original ended after 9 songs. might upgrade to a 2.1]

Didn't really get into this at all.

This is right down the middle for me really, some interesting sounds that were probably very new at the time but do sound a bit dated now. The vocals didn't do much for me either, but most of the songs were pleasant enough to listen to. Having said that, I listened to it fully through twice and can't remember any of the songs now!

Architecture And Morality. I don't get it. The music I mean; it's just a bit shallow and pointless? 2.

Don't quite get it. It's perfectly pleasant to have on, but doesn't grab me at any point. Starts off well enough, but goes downhill pretty quickly and doesn't really recover. 2/5.

5/10, but admittedly I wasn't paying too much attention.

Well, it's certainly a vibe.

Something of a drag, but mostly boring. This is not quite the "If You Leave" version of OMD, and some might prefer that. But NOT DADDY!

Unless one was listening to this album through the ears of nostalgia, I fail to see what makes it worthy of being on this list. Maybe it's here because of the blending between electronica and new wave, but to me that only makes this record worse. The poppy, shimmery, but edgy sound of new wave is present in glimpses, but it gets bogged down by the atmospheric and somewhat mechanical sound that the electronica adds. It probably would have been a bit better if they leaned into the "architectural," futuristic sound of the title track, but the combination of genres just didn't create anything special.

This was mostly tedious. There are a couple of okay songs, but a whole lot of filler. I remember OMD being considered as cutting edge with the use of electronics, but even back in the day they were a pretty tedious band. Even the title of the album smacks of pretentiousness. Save for two, maybe three, tracks I did not find this enjoyable.

Much of this was just annoying. Other parts seemed representative instrumentation for the time, with limited vocals.

A band I was never fond of. I didn’t mind Enola Gay but I found none of their output after that at all inspiring. I didn’t mind Souvenir on this album. But the band sound the same as so many British bands from that period sounded - boring.

I was a bit excited when we kicked off with The New Stone Age. "Ooh," I thought, "this is a bit more rockin' than I was expecting. I thought it would be all bleak, tuneless landscapes and dirge interspersed with moments of fey synthpop". But, alas, my expectations were not incorrect. This is a tedious album, an "onslaught of emptiness, ... a new brand of meaninglessness" (Lynden Barber in Melody Maker) , an album that "gives off the dry stench of self-importance" (M. Howell in the Boston Phoenix). I feel like I could have been more into this in the 80s when I listen to a lot of quasi-experimental synth-based music. But now, I yawn, and move on to the next album.

More of a background music kind of thing for me.

Meh - kind of harmless plinky MOR with a few "experimental" bits thrown in to try to make it edgy.

2.5 stars. i listened weeks ago and barely remember anything about it except going "oh, that's an odd and interesting choice" on a couple songs, so half-star for that.

Fairly nice and relaxing music but it really isn't anything special and the vocals don't really add anything.

Nothing too offensive in the first few tracks. Not thrilling, but fine. Could do without the ambient stuff like Sealand. Everything feels just a little out of tune. The random droning and wailing at times doesn't do it for me. As we progress, there is less "music" and more noise (the title track especially). Many tracks that are more musical include very long outros. Souvenir is probably my favorite track. Romance of the Telescope is exceptionally dissonant. Overall, not an album I'd listen to again.

Not my type.

Pretty dour. Was interesting to hear what they used to sound like, but don't think I'll be returning soon.

Honestly a bit boring and overrated

I found this tedious and boring. It's the British 80s electronica version of landfill indie in my opnion

Even on an 80s curve this one falls flat. The orchestrations are messy, the performances are all over the map, and outside of the first few opening tracks none make a strong enough mark to ride above background noise.

some good but mostly meh weird 80s brit new wave electronic hold music

Okay background noise. Maybe I need to listen to more to gain a better appreciation but it all blends for me. I WANT to like it but ehhh.

enjoyed my listen thru, but don't expect a second play

With a band and album name like this, I was expecting something a bit more ambitious than yet another record that sounds exactly like every other new wave turd that came out in the UK at the time. Just more shit that no doubt featured on top of the pops. Cheap, dated and far too regional to be here. 2/5.

80s/synth sound. Tears for Fears/Haircut 100 vibes. Some interesting/strange sound effects/sounds throughout. A different & interesting listening experience, however don’t see myself coming back to this one.

I kept waiting for some kind of payoff but it never came. Felt very pretentious somehow.

You’d struggle to accrue a motlier thirty minutes of sound. All a bit airy and no punch

Corny 80's keyboard shite.

While I’m a huge (early) Synth-Pop/New Wave fan and think OMD’s first two albums are pretty good, this album is not one I would choose to showcase. I’m being generous with ⭐️ ⭐️

This is the third album from English electronic band Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark. The album was inspired by religious music - specifically choirs - and it became a predecessor for synth-pop music. It is now seen as a classic in the synth-pop and new wave genres. OMD did a great job of putting together a cohesive album that speaks to the emotions of the listener, and every song compliments one another. In my opinion the album wasn't spectacular, but it held my interest throughout. I appreciate being able to listen to it.

The tracks are spatial and moody and strike me as a group doing their level best to take the harsh edges off of their nascent electronic instruments. The vocals mostly blend into the crowded early 80's emo/electro scene, but there are moments where the singer's snaps out of the act, which I found far more sincere and engaging. Honestly, my impressions on the album are all over the place. Tracks like 'Motion And Heart' show how bad things can get, whereas 'Extended Souvenir' and 'Of All The Things We've Made' work way better. Then there are tracks somewhere in the middle, like 'Sacred Heart', where I think the synthwave backtrack is great, but the vocal track just kills it for me. I am curious to see where the group went from here, but I probably won't end up coming back to this album in particular.

Not their best stuff. Pretty typical 80's fair, though.

Just so long and boring. Droning on and on with random music playing and "singing". 3/10.

There are some truly memorable parts to this album, and some entirely forgettable parts. Great and rubbish in equal measure.

Well.. No..

2/5 nope

more like architecture and mundanity...not a very exciting album. Honestly thought the band were one hit wonders and was surprised to see that album on this list. Would much rather listen to Kraftwerk. 2/5

Put me to sleep. Nothing else to say.

Nothing new.

Sounds a lot like discount Depeche Mode. Not bad but I don't know why I'd listen to this when I could just listen to Depeche Mode.

The most interesting Song is The New Stone Age. And much of the rest - I have not remembered

Spotify doesn't even have the full album! The two singles they did have were alright. But I couldn't give this the full listening experience. Spent the day listening to I, Jonathan by Jonathan Richman instead.

Average...dated

The familiarity of the singles probably keeps them fresh. The general sound of the album and how different it was at the time soon got passed by. Others took it on developed it much further.

Very electric and very new wave. Did not have any re-listenability. Some songs were OK, but I was bored through most of it.

The New Stone Age is such a banger but the rest of the album just drags after that.

Frankly, it's just boring to me. In the over-an-hour it takes for this album to wrap up, there's only a few tracks that caught my ear - Georgia, Architecture and Morality, and Motion and Heart; and even at that, A&M is over before it gets going (oddly enough given the problem with the majority of the album is the opposite), and the carnival-style novelty of Motion and Heart wore thin on me by the end. I understand and generally appreciate the appeal of an album that works as a whole, rather than as a collection of singles; however, I just didn't find the sounds on this appealing for the best part, and was ready for every song to end by the time it finally did. The crafted hooks weren't enough to get past the overly repetitive tracks on this, and the vocals grated on me. I respect the craft, and synthesized experimentation... I just really didn't find that this one hit the mark

Has some interesting moments, but generally fairly bland, and not very unique. On the higher end of 2 or the lower end of 3

I definitely know I know something by this band. They have a big hit I think. My guess is it is not on this album. One of those John Hughes songs. These guys are exactly what I thought they were. The Smiths, The Clash, The Cure, that whole vibe. The New Stone Age - Electronic Emo. Experimental Kraftwerk stuff in here for sure. Depeche Mode feel, but less polished. More punk. She's Leaving - This one starts with a Joy Division sound. Souvenir - First of the "singles" off this album. Nice song. How was that a single? It was pretty "care-free" to me. Sealand - Avant Garde to say the least here. And it's a long one. Feels slightly pretentious so far, but for its time, this might have been a true demonstration of something. 4:00 before vocals set in. I just don't feel that this song held up as the anchor it apparently was designed to be. The industrial noise part made me laugh. Like now I'm expecting animal sounds like a goat or something to mix in...and if they do - I'll pee my pants. Joan of Arc - Second single off the album. First thought is, "Why?" but it's more of a metaphorical comparison I think. This has a stronger single feel than Souvenir. Maid of Orleans - So what's with the Joan of Arc motif? The music video for this one is...something. The message being, "we're smart." We read and play chess and know things about Joan of Arc. Also, here's a cross, so keep your faith? Architecture and Morality - Title track. And as title tracks go, it's a let down. More loud, industrial noises, all building to...nothing. I know this was inspired and inspiring, but without context, it's not something I want to listen to. Georgia - This one sounds like Devo. Or Donkey Kong? Some kind of commentary on Russia and the USSR? The Beginning and the End - Honestly, the guitar was a welcomed sound. These guys got a little too self-important I think. Give me synth pop, not a lecture. Sorry. Overall, experimental, somewhat interesting, but ultimately all over the place.

Mostly boring and drawn out for no apparent reason. However, I can see from where some of the later 90s electronic music was inspired. Worth a listen. Once.

Not notable really. Some songs were alright, but I don’t see myself coming back enthusiastically for another listen

pretty meh. stopped like halfway through because it was boring. at least it was in English

Electronic rock. Seems really good, unfortunately just not my taste in musical style. Joan of Arc is a straight bop though.

I enjoyed it, but I listened to another orchestra focused album and didn’t like it as much as that.

i like the whatever you call the music in the background it's so dreamy, especially in "she's leaving". actually scrap what i said before all the songs have a nice tinkle to them but souvenir is something else

Alright but wtf was the first song

With such bombastic band and album names, I found the music disappointingly minimalistic. I can see it being enjoyable when in the right mood or how this album may have been a strong influence for many new wave bands to come. But as an album, no, I definitely didn't like it. Mostly boring and occasionally annoying.

Best wel ok.

Right okay, what's this?

Begon best aardig, maar toch afhaakt na 4 nrs.

An interesting album, not really my thing though.

Somehow I had heard Georgia before and that song is weirdly endearing. However, most of the album (especially the more experimental parts) was borderline unlistenable. 4

Can't say I enjoyed this 80s album.

Mangler enola gay :(

A few nice songs

Instrumental, relax

honestly, I couldnt get into this album, unlike something like Dexy's Midnight Runners, thought i cant outright compare the two, this also had a bit of The Cure feel to it. I know this band's biggest song was "If You Leave", but this album just didnt resonate with me.

Monotonous synth pop, very stereotypical 80s pop sound.

og synth pop

Very boring I wasn’t really into it

Only 3 songs available in Canada. DNF but not really my thing anyway.

I’m not sure if it was because I was listening this in bed, but I got a bit bored listening to the album about halfway through and felt that sleepy lofi suited me much better. Then I realized I’m really bad at sleeping with headphones on, so I turned off the lofi as well. The ending to the intro song felt a little random, I remember thinking. A discrete piece of randomness that didn’t feel significant, like any child could have created the piece. For an album with the word “architecture” in the title, it could be perceived as ironic. Maybe the value of the album lies in its lyrics? I’ll check it out later.

So weird

Not a fan.

Todella outo levy. Välillä ihan lepposaa menoa ja välillä WTF

No tää oli tällanen. Ajoittain hyvää, mut muuten ei oikeestaan. Ilmeisesti joku 80-luvun pioneeribändi ja joku musiikkipervo dumaa mua siitä ku en tienny

Not for me

Dull in 81, much duller now. This is not Dare.

Finding a way to listen to this was a pain in the ass. The music is 1.5 stars, but the experience less than 1.

More 80s trash

It's not terrible for what it is, but it's hardly memorable or noteworthy. Early 80s synth pop that has clear derivations from Jarré or Eno, but unremarkable tunes that sound more like pharmaceutical commercials than anything else.

Is this AMSR for europop enthusiasts?

Boring and boring

🐌 this was a grind

Listening to this felt like homework

The 13 year old girl in me wanted to give this a 5 star rating BUT the ears on that same girl 40 years later said "fuck that was terrible". One of us did not hold up well

Not for me. 1/5

Favorite Song: None, they all suck

I gave up

Very not for me

I couldn’t get on board with this one. I’m not a fan of a lot of 80’s music in any case, but OMD doubled-down and played right into all of the 80’s stereotypes I don’t like with this album.

Really nothing I liked about this album

Complete ass

Just awful. Try hard nerd music for that era.

This is nonsense from the title to the songs. Everything is so so and nothing more than that.

Kind of reminded me of the Smith’s but with cheesy 80s synth.

not a fan. some interesting soundscapes but Motion and Heart alone is enough to give this album one star

Simply Having a Wonderful Christmastime without any of the fun of the holidays.

# 594 : Architecture And Morality Architecture and Morality – More Like Wallpaper and Passivity This album is very ordinary. Nothing special, nothing memorable. Some tracks are okay, some are just there, and the whole thing feels like it’s trying to be profound while slowly lulling you into a nap. It’s drawn out and boring—slow enough to forget it’s even on. The 80s synth pop here is fine, but if you’ve heard one, you’ve heard them all. OMD doesn’t do much to stand out from the melodramatic crowd. In all seriousness, does anybody still listen to this? If you haven’t heard anyone mention this album in the last 25 years, you probably don’t need to hear it before you die. Best Track (if you must): Georgia – and even that’s like picking the least soggy crouton from a bowl of synth soup. Verdict: ★ for effort. File under “albums that sound like a fax machine trying to feel emotions.”

Not my jam

Hard to articulate how boring this is.

Not a fan. Super repetitive

Pretty chill rainy day listen. Very typical 80s music imo. Stereo mixing was fun but nothing overall complex. Probably won’t ever listen to this again.

Joan of Arc

What is the British fascination with mediocre new wave/electronica? At least prog rock bands can play instruments (not that it makes their self-grandurizing noise more pleasant to listen to, but they have put effort into it). Many others, far more articulate than me (glances at Neil Young), have explained how the shift from analogue to digital and the proliferation of the synthesizer and keyboard have done more damage to music and music culture than about anything else in history, so that's all I'll say on that here. This album itself is just so damn boring. The entire pooled musical "talent" of this band amounts to a dude that sounds like Robert Smith. That's it; that's the highlight. I honestly couldn't tell when one song ended and the next began. I get that this was recorded when synthesizers and the like were new and exciting, but just because you can doesn't mean you should. No hits, negative influence, and it bored me to tears.

Nope! Don't know what this was, 3 songs in, 80s jazz is how id describe it.

What a load of nothing, the first few tracks have some ok moments, but after that it turns really boring. It's synth-pop without any pop. It's doing a worse version of what bands like Kraftwerk and Ultravox did before them. I never really enjoyed the major hit they had and I didn't like listening this album when I got it on LP from a large collection. I'd be fine with never listening to this again, I'd want to never listen to it.

Several attempts at being artsy that bored me to death. At its best it's very bland 80's music

# Playlist Track - Souvenir # Notes - Most tracks are either boring, annoying or uninspiring. And there are 16 of them. - I might have enjoyed a few during the listen, but how could I know? There's always a bad one after. - Not recommended.

Why is this on the lost seriously, trash- just like bowie

decided I’m just not gonna bother until it’s an album I’ve at least heard of, I’m not arsed about new experiences right now I want familiarity team fuck off/5 FTW x

And there was me thinking I had a soft spot for OMD. This album is utter toss. You’ve got a bloke with weak vocals and some of the most agonisingly basic synths and beats I’ve ever heard. Compared to what Eno was doing before and around the same time (which are on this list), this feels like some child has put it together. If simplicity is the supposed charm, for me they’ve just taken it to the extremes of minimalist tedium. Toss I say.

First song nice, the rest shit.

oh no, new wave again? I'm starting to develop a deep aversion to this genre.

1 - boring and soft. How does every new wave band have the same vocalist

Not for me

De cara achei a capa tediosa. Orquestra? Não pedi isso. The new Stone Age - Caralho, isso não é orquestra convencional. Gente? U2? Curti, parece a abertura de um álbum enérgico. Tem um elementos bem experimentais. Babado. Shes Leaving - Tem uma vibe rock do anos 80. É legalzinha. Trilha sonora de As vantagens de ser invisível. Souvenir - Música de karaoke. Quero passar. Passei. Sealand - Ai de novo musica de karaoke. Jesus, que depressão. Joan of Arc - Trilha sonora de filme dos anos 80. Joan of Arc (maid of orleans) - Desisto, esse album não é pra mim. Uma crítica a plataforma que fica indicando uns álbuns que não tem nada de eletrônico, mona eu não pedi isso.

119/1089 - I don't care how influential this was to synth pop. I'm not rating midi saxophone above 1 star. The other songs on the album were also awful. In order to not make my 1 star notes too negative, I decided I'm gonna recommend albums I like that aren't on the list (like my Charlatans note). Toto - Toto (1978) A band of solid session musicians making some cool genre-blending songs (mainly rock, pop, soul, some synth stuff). Some stand out songs are "I'll Supply The Love" "Georgy Porgy" and "Hold the Line" but I like pretty much every song on this album.

Means nothing to me.

Total pooh

Me too 80’s

I don't remember here I first heard it, but there's a saying that media can be good or bad, but the worst sin a piece of art can commit is to be boring. Listening to this hour of interminable samey electronica almost-music, there were multiple points where I looked at the queue and thought "Jesus, is this still not over?"... So no, I can't recommend this.

Part of me feels it's unfair to give this one a 1. It didn't necessarily sound bad, but it was so unbelievably boring. Considering I didn't enjoy a single track, I have no other choice.

Music made by people that like smelling their own farts.

I don't really find much to connect with here.

No thanks .

Shout, derivative.

Never a big OMD fan. Listening to this a couple of times didn't change that.

Pushing for the worst so far

This was not as good as I remember OMD being and I do not remember them being good

Shit was ass

Boring. It all sounds like same.

Not my favorite. Felt very slow and boring for my taste. Maybe wasn’t in the mood to listen to it

I really did not like this album at all. I was desperate for it to end. His voice, the electronics, the lyrics. It was all horrible. 1/5

As I am no fan of the brit-pop sound, I have less than good intentions listening to this. Turns out I was right. Not for me.

Boring stuff

This band has some great tracks but this album ain't got none

Never heard of OMD, but this album was released Nov 8 1981, one day after I was born, so I was optimistic and hopeful I would love this. Overall very underwhelming, didnt really enjoy at all. Definitely some quintessential 80s beats, but other than that, ready to move on.

I really tried to get through it...I failed. I'm sure there's an audience out there for this. I am not it.

I didn’t like a single song. Bad!

The worst of the early 80’s. Zero stars.

EWkki fyrir mig ..

Avand guard, post punk, 80's synth pop? No, thank you.

Too much electronic drum and soft sounds.

No thank you

Boo 👎

Boring.

Not a fan

An entire album where almost nothing notable happens at all. Yay.

Not an album I would’ve listened to on my own, and one I’ll probably never listen to again. Sounded like it could’ve been in the background of a John Hughes movie set in a high school in Anytown, Illinois.

Ah geez this album was very damn long idk wasn’t horrible wasn’t great. Putting this in the never listening again bin 1.75

Overall : 4/10

Another snoozer.

Seems like they got a new synthesizer with bell and other sounds and were just trying it out.

p476. 1981. 1 star. Dreary and soulless synth pop. This is the soundtrack to every dull grey wet Tuesday in Liverpool in Thatcher's Britain. Most the album is the band farting about with synths on songs that outstay their welcome - who the fuck needs a 7 minute "moody" instrumental, it's like punk never happened, eh lads? And what the fuck is the album title about? Pretentious wankers.

Tried a few times, just don't get it

Couldn’t even hear anything

Maid of Orleans ken ik wel en vind ik wel aardig, maar verder kan ik hier echt helemaal niks mee...

What an awful thing

Some alright tracks on this one, not a huge fan to be honest.
