Reviews (page 7 of 12)

Nice jazz album (sounds like jazz to me). I can see the influence the album had for the movie Whiplash by Damien Chazelle

Really solid jazz album. Not much more I can say Favorite tracks: “Part of a Whole” and “Maseru”

Ya like jazz?

More instrumental jazz. I enjoyed it, but I couldn't tell the difference between this, Miles Davis, or Thelonius Monk.

Really enjoyed this. Cool jazz, with occasional synth vibes.

Really upbeat nice jazz

This was a fantastic album. Completely new to me but will be listening again very soon

Very nice and moody, all the songs feel like one big song and I like that.

Alternates between: Funky, violent, groovy, mournful, cinematic, and bluesy. Like late-era Coltrane + Funk with 70’s instrumentation.

I liked this one a lot in some spots and not as much in other spots. I’m not a huge fan of the jazz improv thing where a soloist goes on and on and on and on… But I generally liked it.

All instrumental experimental jazz- very technical. Had a feel of a film noir detective movie. Really enjoyed the drum solo on “blues for Huey” and the weird twist of “ingo pow-pow” at the end

This was a fun one. I feel like I need a few more listens to soak it in though.

I don’t know if it was due to the inauguration and us having a new president, but this album made me feel great, like the sun was shining a little brighter.

Didn’t listen so listened to Camelphats album instead

Lekker jazzy, goede wakker worden muziek

Thought this was great, usual I'm too dumb for jazz caveats I can probably take as read from now on.

I can dig it

Really liked it - kinda funky.

Huh, Jazz! Welch‘ willkommene Abwechslung in dieser populärmusiklastigen Liste. Gefällt mir gut bis sehr gut. 4 Sterne, hart an der Grenze zu 5.

Never heard of this guy but it was great, had a lot of hard bop elements and catchy grooves which I like

what a fun change of pace. i don’t usually listen to jazz but this is pretty dang good, and will be added to my regular albums.

Meditate

What an album, fantastic jazz, Ali e and bright loved it.

Beautiful

Jazz bem animado.

I didn't mind this but nothing really stood out either

Meh, not the best Jazz album on this list in my opinion. But I know nothing about Jazz so it's probably objectively great

I don't really like jazz , but it wasnt bad

Pretty decent jazz fusion stuff, the first three songs are definitely the best but there's a couple of other good songs strung about but this is definitely a little too long

Twas the day of Confessions II releasing, so I had to listen to this album earlier in the day. It was a good listen, but too long for me on that day, coulda streamlined it (although I think that's going against the vibe of jazz)

205. not bad

These are all nice-sounding tracks that really showcase the talent and musicianship of jazz. The main issue for me is the length. I do like jazz, but 76 minutes is a bit much, and there were definitely moments where I felt the album stretching on. Still, I really enjoyed the tracks that lean more into Afrobeat, because they give the music more identity and make it more interesting to listen to. Overall, it’s a solid album with plenty to appreciate, even if for me it works best as good background listening.

Undeniably a good jazz album but not one of my favorites

He's a very talented trumpet player. This is another one where I really think that the venue that you hear the music will impact your view of the music. I would probably love to hear this live in a club with low lights but it's not as fun in my car driving my kids around. I was impressed with his talent but it's not one I'll be adding to a playlist.

Enjoyed ! I like jazz but usually when it leans into the more chaotic rougher sound that anything too smooth, this was probably a bit in-between the two for me

Good vibes 😎

I'm not the biggest fan of jazz, but I respect the genre a lot. I feel a lot of the experimentation and musical theory goes way over my head, and honestly, I would very rarely sit down to listen to even some of the more accessible greats, but I still have a high level of respect for these proper musicians. The majority of this album feels quite accessible. But it does border on experimental at times, culminating in a proper nutty piece of afro-jazz experimentation, the strangest children's song you'll ever hear. But overall, it's great. Will I sit down and put it on again? Probably not too often, and that's the only reason it's losing a star from, because of my own personal preferences around jazz. But, I can respect that there's some great music on this album.

The afrobeats bits are excellent but the rest is pretty standard jazz

Yup, it’s jazz.

Never heard of Hugh Masekela before (as far as I know!?). This album rode the line in terms of the jazz I prefer -- I am more of a "mellow" and "melodic" jazz guy personally. But, while being mostly upbeat, this has a nice balance of melody and tempo and wasn't all wild and crazy dissonance. Overall, an enjoyable listen -- not one I will be returning to regularly but one I'm glad to have heard!

3.5/5. Solid jazz record. The way it’s produced and played makes it feel quite smooth and easy on the ears, without sacrificing the power of Hugh’s horn playing which is consistently pretty great. I also enjoyed a lot of the piano playing throughout. I will say though, it picks up significantly for me in the second half, some of the tracks early on in the album drag on just a bit too long. But once you get to the chaotic drumming of “Blues for Huey” or the catchier and faster paced “Maseru” things become real good.

Jazz album, enjoyed this one, smooth and not too all over

nice relaxing music.

Jee jatsia.

I normally talk negatively about the jazz albums on here but I actually thought this one was nice

This was pretty good. A lot of this kind of jazz can be too self indulgent, and this was in parts. But there was some really nice stuff in there too

sounded nice. good background music while cooking

Excellent bit of Jazz, very enjoyable

Vast majority of the songs are a pleasant listen and enjoyable background music. I don’t know if I’d come back to these songs as anything but a musical backdrop, but I felt the groove and life in each track. Some songs didn’t click for me (“Blues for Huey”, “Ingoo Pow-Pow”), but the ones that did (“Part of a Whole”, “Minawa”, “Maseru”, “Inner Crisis”) made the record worth it. A solid three. STAND-OUT SONG: “Part of a Whole” HONORABLE MENTIONS: “Minawa”, “Maseru”, “Inner Crisis”

Very good jazz album, I don't listen to much jazz so this was a different venture for me, but quite enjoyable. Fav Songs Inner Crisis The Big Apple Part Of A Whole Is it Top 1001 Worthy (is it essential)? Probably a yes, very good jazz record

I like it, but I am also not a huge jazz-person, so while I understand why people love it, it is a bit too slow for me.

Most of the time I felt like I was on an elevator. Songs were way, way, too long. Worst song: "Unhome", I can't say why but I really don't like this song. Best song; "Nomali" mostly because I liked the addition of the piano and the trumpet was tempered by the sax. I had to change my mind the absolute worst song was: "Pow-Pow (Children's Song) the addition of the voices and repetitive bongo drums did nothing for the song other than make it worse than it was without them.

Quite a lot going on!

I don’t know enough about jazz to properly rate this album. As far as jazz goes, this was pretty enjoyable. I got to read up on the life of Hugh Masekela, which was interesting.

I liked it, definitely something I have to be in the mood for. But great for studying.

Good jazz

Fine but not for me

I so not have the ear for jazz.

Ha, zanimiv začetek, in medias res. (Sm se pa že podučila, da me spet na petek čaka več k 70 minuten album - očitno moram nehat si tok stvari schedulat na petek, ker me algoritem konsistentno presenet z najdaljšimi albumi - sj mi zmer uspe, sam sm za brezveze živčna, da mi ne bo & who needs extra stress?) Anyway. Fino spet dobit neki totalno nepoznanega. In so far, enjoyable. "Maseru" je fajn. Bl hiter, poskočen. Ma na splošno, isti problem k ga mam ponavad pri albumih kot so ta: zelo očitno objektivno dobra glasba, kompetentna; just not for me.

This was an easy listen but I did find it a bit repetitive and not really expressive enough for me. (Cultured jazz listener now)

It's pretty good for what it is but not something I would listen to but good enough

Perfectly fine jazz. With a little flare. I enjoyed it. Don’t really plan to listen to again. But it’s good.

Groovy soundtrack jazz

I’m not sure I love jazz. This was fun though, sometimes it was too jazzy, but can appreciate the artistry.

One of the better, more structured jazz albums

24/05/2026 I have no real great feelings towards this. Take it or leave it. Spotify listeners: 359.6k

groovy, cool. felt nostalgic in a joyful way listening in bed on a rainy saturday morning. read the wiki article after and didn't really square the sound with the resistance music thing, but you know what this is a vibe and if you have a good aura and your enemy's is bad then you will win. fave track maseru

Definitely Jazz. Very intense jazz and not my vibe of Jazz. Love Jazz tho. Mmm jazz

It’s Jazz…..nice! Actually ok as background music, but not my thing really.3

One of the better jazz albums I've listened to but still mostly background noise.

Not a huge fan of Jazz but it was a nice experience and an enjoyable listen

Squerk! Skronk! Keraang! There is a time and place for harsh atonal jazz, but now is not the time and my ears are not the place. Not enough groove for my listening needs. But if you like the jazz guys being jazzy for their jazz fans, this album will levitate you.

Might smooth......mighty jazzy. Great listen.

Some damn fine jazz

Something I could listen to while writing or drawing I guess. I'm too lyricspilled I need to songwritingmaxx to enjoy anything.

Album #155 Hugh Masekela: Home Is Where The Music Is I thought that the length would hinder this album more than it does; when I saw an hour-plus 70s jazz album, I prepared myself for a snooze-fest, but to be honest, the music is far more enjoyable than I expected. I find that I don’t even know what I want out of jazz, and my enjoyment of it is seemingly random. Sometimes I find it to be a great enabler of atmosphere, and other times an overwhelming nuisance. Every track here either fades into the background nicely or catches your attention in a good way. The only track I didn’t like was the last one, which was more of a tribal song than the traditional cool jazz on the rest of the album. Though this album is definitely an undertaking, and if you’re not treating it as a soundscape for your evening, than it’s presence may annoy you. Best Songs: Minawa, Part Of A Whole, The Big Apple Worst Song: Ingoo Pow-Pow Score out of 10: 6.5

Part of Whole - Really Good Minawa - Pure Blissful Jazz The Big Apple - Saxy Unhome - Subtle Maseru - Beautifully energetic Inner Crisis - Really Good Blues for Huey - Huey and I don't have the same taste unfortunately Nomali - Decent Maesha - Decent Ingoo Pow-Pow - Not my cup of tea

Great jazz album. Masterful playing. Most jazz albums I listen to are slow and a bit too same-y the whole runtime but this was nice and varied. Not much of a jazz person myself but it made my journey to uni enjoyable. 3.5/5

A jazz album I enjoyed more than most on this list.

Endeavoring this list has forced me to listen to Jazz. I find that Jazz I like is piano and/or drum driven. On that, Minawa is nice, even with the brass that follows. I still had a hard time sticking with it. Maybe I need to do psychedelics to Jazz or something, expand my mind or something. I dunno, but this isn't bad even for a jazz idiot like me.

Decent Bebop music, but didn’t understand what made it distinctly South African. Or Afrobeat. Great jazz horns, but basically copied American jazz of the 50s & 60s. 3 stars

Really fun, I enjoyed this one quite a bit

Honestly, I love the influences and sounds on this, the groove is great, but didn't stick with me unfortunately. This was the closest to elevator music of jazz that I've listened to so far.

Not a jazz listener and this album didn’t change that fact.

Really nice funk-y fusion. Maybe a little overlong to be something I come back to too often, but the range of styles and moods explored here does somewhat justify the length. It's worth a revisit, that's for sure.

Jazz, cool but not chill or class. More like popular

Classic Jazz

Great musician, but I can't quite get into it.

This was a great jazz album, perfect for listening at work. Nothing outstanding, but good, solid music throughout.

Very pleasant listening experience.

Good jazz music. Once again, not what I want to always listen to but I still enjoy it.

⭐️⭐️⭐️

Entspannter Funk-Jazz.

Solid jazz album, but not very mellow.

Pleasant surprise. It was interesting and engaging.

Again, technically impressive, but instrumental only albums can personally be a slog

I’m sure music aficionados will love this. I found it easy to like but harder to love. And I must admit a slight sense of dejavu as I listened through

Relajante, no invade mi tranquilidad

I have never heard of this guy before. Seeing a double album on this list always makes me sad, but it's not his fault! Sounds like jazz, nice jazz, cool jazz, long jazz. 3.5 rounded down Heard before? No Owned: No: 68/276 (24%) Will I get: No

An interesting mix of jazz and African rhythms. Had some stand out tracks and some that washed a bit over me. But overall a good, catchy listen

Good jazz, I wouldn’t say smooth. Seemed unpolished, in a sense. Still, a good album.

I’m no fan of jazz, but this was ok. I didn’t hate it, and that’s an achievement for a jazz record.

Basic jazz.

Without lyrics

Not huge in to jazz, but I'm kinda digging this one.

Decent jazz…

A nice, easy listen after gangsta rap the day before! I see Hugh Masekela's work listed as Afro-Jazz, but to me, it just sounds like jazz—the horns, the piano, the bass, the light percussion. There's a drum solo in one of the later songs, but it's not aggressive. It was smooth accompaniment to my workday until the final track, Ingoo Pow-Pow, which did a left-to-right-channel back-and-forth amid its repetition that just annoyed me.

More background jazz. This time of the South African variety.

I don't think any particular tracks stood out as memorable here but whereas this might be a criticism I have leveled at other albums, here I don't mean it as one. Rather, this felt like a cohesive hour of jamming and I do like a solid jazz jam. The introduction of vocals in the final track however, is a jarring misstep.

Not really my choice, but far from bad

I famously dislike jazz

Like being in the middle of an intense thriller from the 70s

coffee shop vibes i love

i like it hehe

3.7 stars

Sure is jazz

Pretty good jazz

Yet another album I would've never discovered, this whole genre I probably would've never found

Pretty solid, jazz album, I definitely enjoyed most of the hits off of this! Not something I would necessarily go back to either, but I appreciate it for what it is.

Upbeat and enjoyable Afro-jazz with plenty of horns. A little light on the "Afro" but still very good.

Never been much of a jazz gal but hey it was actually kinda nice having on in the background!

Almost serenaded me to sleep.

I'm gonna fall asleep this jazz is too smooth!

Better than expected, even the heavy brass parts didn't break me.

It was fine. I lay down with headphones on to listen and was lulled to sleep. It’s a nice album to while doing something else like cleaning the house or sitting by the fire with a glass of bourbon. It certainly not something that should belong on a list like this.

All that jazz! Enjoyed it!

Have I listened to this album before? No How familiar am I with this album? Completely unfamiliar How do I feel about this artist? I do not know who this is Favorite song(s)? Maseru Overall Thoughts: I don’t normally seek out jazz, but I don’t mind it. I tend to prefer music with words over instrumentals (that goes for all genres). I listened to this while putting together my new office chair and it was nice, but not something I’m likely to revisit.

Really interesting jazz! In all honesty, I only listened to the first few songs, so I'm not certain my rating is a fair one, but I did hear enough to know that I liked it.

Lovely soundtrack to cleaning up first scorebook (Phillies/Rockies) of the ABS era in Denver airport on 4/5/26

reasonable

Pretty jammy. I liked it. Sort of gave me older Chicago vibes at times. 3.5⭐️

My only experience with Hugh Masekela was through Paul Simon’s Graceland, and based on that mini-glimpse, this could not have been further from what I expected. Where I was expecting some African fusion, I was a bit deflated by what seemed very much like an American jazz record. Not bad by any means, and perhaps it will grow on me over time, but today, not all there.

Had some high points, had some other points that had Christmas music energy.

Pretty good but a bit too long

I've had quite a few instrumental albums now often in this sort of genre. This was another good one I found myself enjoying more than I expected. It does have a long runtime but it holds its own for the most part. Top picks: Minawa, Maseru, Nomali.

Good album but I’ve heard better jazz from others that aren’t on their list. Maybe it was the Afrobeat parts that’s wasn’t for me - not sure why it didn’t resonate for me more since I usually love jazz.

Interesting jazz, nothing too earth shattering to my ears but worth a listen. I find jazz hard to rate, I liked it but I'm not sure I'd ever go back for another listen.

Great Songs: Good Songs: Part of a Whole, Minawa, The Big Apple, Maseru, Inner Crisis, Blues for Huey, Nomali Mid Songs: Unhome, Maesha, Ingoo POW-Pow (Children’s Song) Bad Songs:

It was neutral. It didn’t offend me to listen to it, but it’s not something I’ll remember for long.

He plays beautifully, but I only have space in my heart for one flugelhorn master. This album feels more like jazz for jazz people, not jazz for the audience.

Top : Inner Crisis Flop : Unhome

Pretty chill album, would be good to have on as background music at a party

Legit jazz but I didn't feel like all of it

This album surprised me. Now, I am not much of a jazz guy. I don't listen to much jazz because it never appealed to me. I have listened to a couple of jazz albums like Bitches Brew by Miles Davis and A Love Supreme by John Coltrane. Bitches Brew is an outstanding album and A Love Supreme was decent IMHO. However, I found this album to be very good. It's not meant to quicken the pulse or wow you. It's meant to be relaxing and serve as some great jazz. Hugh Masekela shows exactly why he is so talented on the flugelhorn and the other band members do a great job as well. Will I go back to this album a lot? No. Am I happy I listened to it? Yes! Highlights: Part Of A Whole The Big Apple Unhome Inner Crisis

I just don’t really know how to consume jazz as anything other than background music. It’s a genre that has never really connected with me. I like some of the grooves of main ideas here, and it all sounds well-played. But nothing got me excited enough to give it a high rating.

Best of luck to anyone whos gonna take an hour out of their day to listen to this

Favorite songs: Minawa, The Big Apple, Nomali Feels like 70's game show music or incidental music from an 70's NYC police movie.

Very cool vibe will come back to this

Jazz is not really my thing but the album was still enjoyable :)

That did not feel like a children's song to me

well. it's jazz. the last song was the most interesting

Jazz stresses me out man. Kinda good tho.

I did like a lot of sounds throughout, but something about it all just didn't land well. All of the songs are longer than average, but they really felt like they dragged. I'd give this a 3.5, but I'm not okay with a 4.

Some good melodies on here. This feels more structured than the other jazz albums I've listened to which I appreciate. The weakest sections were the ones with heavy improvisation.

Jazz still feels like a wasted genre on me, with it's intricate arrangements and soulful playing. I really appreciate the music, but the lyrics are a sore absence for me. Ironic, considering I listened to electronica for years (which largely doesn't have lyrics and has synthesized soulless sounds). Masekela's trumpet playing is beautiful and controlled throughout the album and his supporting band on keys (I have to put in a special word for Larry Willis, as his piano on Minawa was simply gorgeous) and bass can be given the same praise. I am grateful for each Jazz album that comes my way, as I'm hoping it will further deepen my appreciation for the genre. Favourite songs were "Part of a Whole", "Minawa" and "Inner Crisis".

Some nice easy listening Afro Jazz. Listened to it mainly while walking at night and it set the mood just right. Always love these little obscure album inclusions.

I wish I could connect with this more but I guess I just don't properly 'get' Jazz. Nice enough background music.

I’ve grown into jazz over the years and do not dislike it as I used to do. Problem is that I try my best to get into it like this album, in the forlorn hope that the penny will drop and all the opposing improvisation’s going on will come together in my head. Never does so whilst I know that there’s good things in there somewhere, up to now it is proving very evasive. But the search of the lost chord will go. Which reminds me of the Moodies who are so much easy to get along with. 3/5 13/2/26

Not a fan of jazz, but given the genre this firmly sits in I actually enjoyed some parts of it. Not enough to revisit, but ok.

Not my cup of tea and appreciate the talent

Never heard of this artist before today. Pleasant enough, a good listen.

Had it on in the background and it settled into a warm, steady groove, but it never reached the clarity or pull of a gold‑standard record like Kind of Blue, even though “Part of a Whole” and “Minawa” offered the album’s most engaging moments. Pleasant overall, just not as compelling as the jazz classics that usually hold my attention.

Pretty good background music. I'm evidently not able to appreciate jazz enough to go deeper than that.

Probably a jazz lovers dream but I’m merely an enjoyer

I don't listen to jazz so often but this was quite nice

Smooth and accessible + a rhythm section that brings it.

I’m impressed by the musicality but not really my vibe.

Somehow missed listening to this album when it was generated. New jazz artist I've never heard of.

It was fine at first, then got boring. Mainly the percussion, It felt erratic.

Nice jazz, can’t say it wowed but it’ll go in my rotation. I liked the first song.

It's fine. Nothing special. To be fair, I'm not a fan of jazz with too much high pitched horn playing. I'm not sure that's what it's called but I just don't like high note jazz.

For the 25th time or something, I'm not a huge fan of jazz. It's fine. Not great, not bad, not entertaining to me really. I don't like when his trumpet or whatever makes that squeaking sound. Other than that, sure it's fine. Probably better than most jazz on this list so far.

2 much jazz

It’s a well produced album.

A 70s-era jazz-fusion record with some decent songs and arrangements. Features some Rhodes work, some upright bass, sax, and of course trumpet. The first couple songs I didn't care for the solos - they were kind of sloppy and loose, but the rest of the tracks' solos were better.

Incredible background music, but just not my thing tbh. Just too long and repetitive for my taste, but ik it's objectively good. Maseru was my song of the album and fav first listen with Unhome and Minawa being my other highlights

its good, it gives vibe of 1970 in a cafe full of smoke, didnt listen full album but liked it from what i heard

Random thoughts: * This was jazzy groovy. Solid listen. * I definitely need to listen to this one again. I didn’t fully soak it all in. This will be one to revisit. * I don’t feel qualified to critique this album but am sure glad 1001 introduced me to this artist and album.

I liked this less than I have other jazz albums on the list so far. Can’t put my finger on why though.

Jazz makes me feel dumb I think that sometimes it requires more technical knowhow than I have but it does sound pretty sometimes.

Don't really know what it is, but I'm not feeling this one a ton. It's got a little too much of that "70's city" feel when I normally look for 60's cocktail club vibe from my jazz. Like the first song could 100% be used in a scene of a character running through the city, doing chores/tasks while montaged to this music. It's very good, don't get me wrong. But it has a clean-ness to it that I'm not really vibing with.

Nice jazz, very little Afrobeat.

Pretty nice piano jazz.

Not bad but I'm scratching my head as to why this album is included. Hugh Masekela isn't bad but there's at least ten trumpeters not anywhere on this list I would put ahead of him. Even if you want to stick to early 70s jazz fusion trumpet, I will take Red Clay and Straight Life from Freddie Hubbard, Live at the Lighthouse from Lee Morgan and Black Byrd from Donald Byrd just off the top of my head and I bet none of those are on this list anywhere. FML

I'm not well versed in jazz, or Hugh Masekela's music and background as a South African exile, so I feel a little too uninformed to say much about this album except that I enjoyed it, even if it felt a bit long in the tooth at times, and I definitely didn't catch most of the pan-Affrican references and tributes. The most interesting tracks for me were the opening "Part of a whole", "The big apple", "Inner crisis" and "Maesha". Also interesting to find out that Masekela contributed a trumpet solo to another album in this collection: the Byrds' "So you want to be a rock 'n' roll star" (from "Younger than Yesterday").

Nice...

Rolig jazz, litt bakgrunnsmusikk

Música para unos vinitos y cigarro

Really pushing it with the run time

I wanted to have more to say here, but it was alright, good background music. Trumpet go brr 51/1089

Pretty chill and bette than I expected, would work great as some background music while doing something, that requires more focus

Way too long. The second track was nice.

Not an artist I was previously familiar with. Nice jazz groove. I'm a novice jazz listener, but I liked this.

If the jazz you like is Miles Davis's Dark Magus or Ornette Coleman or Sun Ra, then this is not going to attract you. But if you like Chuck Mangione or Spyro Gyra then this is the album for you. Smooth with a touch of African rhythm this would grace any department store background music playlist. As an early example of a pervasive sound that eventually devolved into muzak this is, I guess, influential.

Great jazz album, although not something I'll re-listen.

It was kind of a mediocre jazz album. I liked Maseru, Maesha & Blues for Huey. It was fine but I've heard better ones on The List. What the hell is flugelhorn? A different kind of trumpet. 3

Funky and Jazzy, rambles from time to time but generally great .

Lot’s of different tones—not one note as I thought it would be.

Overwhelming but good at times.

not my type but it was decent

Great soundtrack to the day. Perfect energy!

I liked it, but too damn long! Also Maesha feels like Animal Crossing music...

Begynner å bli litt seig i andre halvdel.

This is generally quite good and smooth. There are some horn parts that get a bit loud and wild but it's not too bad.

Great background music that occasionally moved to the forefront. A little long on play time but overall a good listen.

This is objectively great, but it doesn’t really move me. I think I like Jazz for what it is, but I don’t think it’s a genre that’s gonna grow on me.

Actually a somewhat enjoyable jazz album, who would have thought?

this is my kind of jazz music

the truth is I really like jazz but I limit myself a lot to listening to the oldest one. I liked this album.

3 1/2 Stars: Some nice riffing and although the album stays connected to it's African influence, I prefer my jazz in the BeBop lane. Regardless it's a nice introduction for me to a man I've heard of but who's music I never heard.

Nice dinner party music.

Albums like this is why lists/websites like this are made; would've never known about it if not for it so that's a win in my books. Probably won't save or come back to the album, but i'm happy for the time i spent with it

respect!

Damn this is funky

This is nice enough, but it works as background music for me: I'm not really engaging with this sort of jazz. It's possible this album might repay some further listening, but for the time being, I'm scoring it 3.

I can’t say I’m a jazz fan, but I did somewhat appreciate the first several songs on this album. After that, it kind of dropped off and became kind of annoying. (3)

Good listen, great background noise for the work commute.

Not sure what that was all about...

An enjoyable pleasant surprise. Makes me want to put it on some real speakers to fill the room. not quite as dissonant as John Coltrane. I do like my jazz a little more discordant than Hugh, but this was a nice balance on the softer more listenable than some of the wilder jazz musicians. Would listen again, especially to play at a party or while working.

This was on in the background for me, but in the best possible way. A solid listen all around, though I don't have the musical vocabulary to say much about it, other than that I enjoyed it.

Perfect study music!

Classy dinner party album

Very enjoyable and would certainly listen again.

It was quite sparse in the beginning, so a bit difficult to give an actual thought about. It has this sombre feel to it, which is a nice sound when mixed with jazz. Some of the main horn parts in the first quarter of the album kind of sounds like the main horn part to "Zombie" by Fela Kuti. Highlight Song/s: "Part of a Whole", "Maseru" and "Nomali"

Pleasant for eating.

It is good, but not much memorable. There are better jazz out there.

A very warm, calm and smooth jazz album with some fun and moody moments, but that overall feels long and uninteresting. What I liked the most about the album is the piano. It has the most interesting solos and does a few incredibly wonderful intros to some of the songs, like 'Minawa', 'Inner Crisis' or 'Nomali'. The next instrument that I liked the most was the 'Flugelhorn', the instrument played by Hugh Masekela. It accompanies very well the piano with some nice melodies and also has several impressive solos. The main withdraw about the album is how lengthy it is. The average length of the songs is approximately 7 minutes and a half, and most of the times, they don't do anything interesting enough to maintain my attention, so the tracks end up dragging a lot. The best example is the song 'Blues for Huey', which features some very tasteless drums solo. In the end, I think this is great background music, as I appreciated it more when doing something else and I did get quite bored trying to give this an active listen.

Not my favorite, fine background music for a cold weekend inside

A free flowing, adventurous album that's a bit too long for the number of things it tries. The first song is great, driven by horns and covering lots of different rhythms and melodies. The second track slows things down and explores empty spaces, and the piano there is lovely. Much of the rest of the album covers the same ground in different ways, and the keys especially have diminishing returns. The big surprise is the final song, with African rhythms and vocals. It's definitely an outlier and it may be the best song; if it's not, it's at least the most hypnotic. Nowhere else are the drums as exciting as on that track, not even on the drum solo about halfway through. There's nothing bad here, but to justify the runtime I would have loved to hear more surprises like that last song.

lovely jazzy record. some really strong tracks, look forward to coming back to it

Nice tune, but I like music with lyrics

I can tell it’s good jazz but I can only listen to so much jazz.

Interesting jazz/world music mix from the 70s. Might rate higher upon a second listen.

I had never heard of Masekela before now. Let's see how South African jazz sounds... ... And it sounds very early-'70s-jazzish. Sort of reminiscent of Weather Report. The occasional siren whistle blasts are kind of jarring. I liked "Maseru." A lot of the second half of "Maesha" weirdly kind of evoked Richard Wright's stuff with Pink Floyd from around this time for me. I liked this - it was good music to have on in the background while working (no lyrics to try to pay attention to...)

6.5/10 - Jazz is still hard for me to enjoy, but I thought this was on the more enjoyable end of the spectrum.

It's a good jazz record, nothing more, nothing less. It's nice to have a record on here that isn't from the USA, Western Europe, or Australia though. 6/10

Album #1001 Jazz/Afrobeat double album from the mid-1970s, he is a talented musician but often I can't get into jazz and this album is also a bit too long.

Much better than I was expecting. The description calls it Afro beat jazz but that really only applies to the last song. The rest was very down tempo cool jazz. Worth a listen!

Jazzy lots of horns I remember this getting airplay on FM radio in 70s not really my jam

He is really talented. All these songs got a good melody. The trumpet, drum, and piano solos are all really good I cant fully enjoy this album tho cause I need at least some lyrics to follow along to. If this had some lyrics, I probably wouldve liked it as much as I liked The Meeting Place This is still top tier jazz tho My favorite probably Inner Crisis

I am in awe of how talented he was. This is something I would love to have playing in my apartment at all times. I would have to be in a very specific mood to intentionally listen to this though. Instrumentals aren't really for me. I can still greatly appreciate the artistry.

Vibey, fun jazz. I'm a jazz amateur so I don't have much more to say than that.

i typically am ok with jazz, but i think i prefer more structure to the songs. I liked them in the beginning but they just kept going for like 5 minutes after i felt like they should have ended. this is probably more like 2.5 but ill round up to a 3

The pianist and the drummer are both so crazy. I have no idea how this is so obscure

Good, solid jazz. Nothing stood out to me individually but I really enjoyed it.

Great album

A nice jazz album

Was great. Good while concentrating

I really wish we could do half ratings because this isn't a 3 but it's not a 4 for me either. Either way, I tried listening to this last night while cleaning. Wasn't connecting. Listened during work today: definitely a vibe. Didn't favorite anything but there really wasn't a track I disliked, either. 3.5/5

Nice, but nothing too special

Seemed like a good jazz album. Honestly, this is supposed to be a fusion album but I can’t really tell the difference here. I liked the two horns and the mix, but this album was a bit too long and monotonous for me. 3/5

Very good, just not really my genre. Excellent background/ ambience

Another double! Cmon England!

I don’t care for jazz but this was pretty solod

super long songs which i don't usually mind but listening to this straight i kinda zoned out. maesha is my favorite. so beautiful.

Home Is Where The Music Is - Hugh Masekela This one hits different. It’s long, for sure (I’m not complaining, like, I enjoyed music within 6 or more minutes). But it has some tunes to it. Great percussion and horns, the instrumentation is definitely something. You gotta get some time and vibes for the whole thing. For me, it’s good! Period.

It’s a fine jazz album but not essential. It doesn’t sound unique enough to make a list of 1001 albums you must hear in my opinion.

Nice easy grooving sounds. Trumpet and keyboard especially good. Great music for working out on the treadmill. A strong 3 from me…

For how little I normally like the jazz albums on here, this one was pretty nice. It had some good grooves and the musicians sounded really good together. Despite not having vocals until the very end, it still was interesting enough to keep my attention most of the time. It probably helped that I listened to it on a long drive, so I didn't have much else to distract my ears. That said, I think the longer runtime was one of the biggest negatives. If I hadn't been able to spend 76 minutes to listen uninterrupted, I doubt I would've been able to keep it in my attention. Even having that chance, it still felt like it was a bit too long. I think this was pretty good, especially considering my typical dislike of jazzier works. Not sure I'll listen to it again, but I enjoyed hearing it this time. Overall: 3.2/5

Good instrumental album. Interesting and low key at the same time. Great background music.

good during work

My first time listening to an album just full of instruments. A great new experience! The music was so catchy and relaxing at the same time.

3 out of 5 Smooth jazz. Not a genre I normally listen to, but I enjoyed this album. Very chill and relaxing.

African jazz brought to America. If you love jazz, this is a must hear

The albums length worked against it IMO -- Part of A Whole and Minawa were such a strong start but the middle dipped for me.
