Reviews (page 11 of 12)

Malament no sona. Segurament representa a la perfecció uns cànons que en el seu dia eren trencadors, que jo ara no sé valorar, i que valen molt. Però m'ha dit ben poc.

Felt like a lot of noise and not a lot of music.

Raw, visceral, and unafraid. Not in my normal listening arena, thus the lower score, but I see what this is accomplishing.

guete morge, bin entschiede nöd ready gsi für sone hochi dosis sex, drögs & rock‘n‘roll, sogar en microdosis wär mer glaub z‘vill gsi hot, aber mood verfehlt vo de musikalische qualität probably scho es 3 aber hed sich gester nöd so ahgfühlt, sorry iggy & co!

A little too much for me. Gave me a doors vibe at times and a little Bowie vibe but nothing memorable/songs that stood out.

I didn’t really care for it. The more lurid parts felt kind of like parody?

Meh a bit shouty not for me 5/10

point8.

I'm just not a huge punk fan, and this wasn't doing it for me.

It was ok, fairly generic rock. Decent guitar work, some of the songs were fun. Only real breakout was Your Pretty Face Is Going To Hell, that one was a blast. Penetration was really annoying. Death Trip was fairly good too. Rest of the album was just mid. Best song: Your Pretty Face Is Going To Hell

no thanks i’m good!

Some of the album drags on a bit in my opinion, just a bog standard hard rock and punk rock album that wasn't anything special

Of it’s time. Seem to recall these being a deeper sound than this.

Relativ lang und langweilig

This is very rough for an album from 1973. Was probably a fun show to go to live, but I don't really care for it in this form. Still, more zazzy and fun than a John Lennon album.

i started off listening to the iggy mix. “i need somebody” has a cool sound and beat. probs the song i enjoyed the most. in general did not like, it’s not an album for me at all. now listening to the bowie mix, despite it flaws, i enjoy it a bit more. i can’t explain why, tho the first song “search and destroy” sounds a bit awful in the ears haha. honestly bowie mixes of the last two songs sounds more pleasant than the loud, muddy iggy mix. fave songs are “gimme danger” and “i need somebody”. 2.5/5

Search and Destroy is the only really good song on this album. It has that cool glam-punk vibe. The rest are meh and very rough. And honestly, Iggy is a terrible vocalist.

Vocals sounded like he didn’t care and wasn’t even trying. Not a fan

not interested

Eh, it was OK

This album was definitely raw but I did not feel the power. I listened to 3 of the 4-disc 50th anniversary edition (Bowie Mix, Iggy Mix, and Live, skipped the outtakes) and wasn't wowed by any of it. A lot of it sounds the same, sloppy and indiscernible. I can see this bunching some undies in the early 70's but I needed more from it. I liked the Iggy Mixes better for the danger and weirdness but overall not as good as Fun House. 2.0 for the sludge rock.

Alright, first off. I did listen to both the Bowie and Iggy mixes, and I preferred the Bowie one. The Iggy one felt like he muddied up the instrumentals and made his voice the focus, which I'm sure is good for Iggy Pop, but it wasn't good as a listener, as he's definitely the weakest link in the band. Instrumentally, it was better than I expected. There were definitely some real jams here, but for the most part I think this will just fade back into the background as an album I've listened to but don't have a ton of interest listening to again

I'll admit, it was better than I thought it would be. But that's not saying much since I'm just really not a fan of Iggy Pop. I thought the song structures weren't too bad, I thought the overall tone and vibe was pretty good. It's punk, it's rebellious, it's raw, I can see people who enjoy this album. But that's not me.

The title says it all. Nothing subtle here.

This was probably something great in a live venue, but did not land well via laptop speakers mid-Monday

Music was OK but not really my kind of lyrics

I'm probably missing something but I didn't enjoy this at all.

boring. nothing unique

Didnt do much for me. I hate this 2-3 range because the music wasnt bad but I think a 3 is something I could maybe see myself coming back to. This I cannot so its getting 2.

As the album title describes, raw music - but I miss the power. That was certainly seen differently in the 1968s.

new to me but great guitars 5/10 but raw power is sick! all these oldies make me feel like in a movie they were horny in the 70s lmao

I ran this twice to make sure I was not missing something. I wasn't. The first and last track were decent. 2.5/5

It’s never a good sign when you recognise the opening song by a superior cover. The entire record is a band and a man hurtling fast towards sensationalist for the sake of it. I can see why this did well in its time. My god it’s of its time.

Don’t know why I can’t lock into The Stooges. But everyone I try I bounce off. The punk attitude is great but I simply don’t enjoy their songs. 2.5/5

Liked some of these songs but probably not the ones that Iggy is best known for. I Need Somebody and Gimme Danger are great - but style better done by The Doors and the blues. Not a fan of the screech that is a bit old rock and roll and also the inaudible lyric - even if the guitar is great.

Gritty and too raw, with occasional screechy vocals. This was not a pleasant listen. Stand-out: Search and Destroy

Yea proto punk or whatever. Ok in small doses I bet. A whole album was a tough, noisy listen, even at 35 minutes

The Ignacio Papadopoulos was initially thought to be a creature of Greek-Mexican mythology. Despite the belief that the Ignacio Papadopoulos (which loosely translated means "noisy hermaphrodite with a guitar") was a being of fiction and fairy-tale, sightings for decades have been reported.. with accounts of this leathery-skinned, weather-beaten humanoid consistently cropping up. "Iggy" as it is more affectionately known is apparently native to the USA, and Swift Cover insurance adverts. Its thick, leathery skin helps protect it from the harshness of the elements, the projectiles I have no doubt are thrown at it, and—hopefully—the criticism I'm about to unload on it. I’ll admit, I’ve never listened to Iggy Pop before. My first real introduction to him was, unfortunately, through those rancid Swift cover adverts. The ones where he’d prance around on the screen, predictably shirtless, with his trousers practically down by his ankles- telling me to get insured and act like a rockstar... whilst his fossilised pubis throbbed at me. He must have been in his late sixties, early seventies at this point.. and he looked like something cobbled together from the chicken skin left on the bones at the bottom of a KFC bucket. Going back through the years to this album, I have to admit, he hasn’t really changed much. I suppose there’s a kind of admirable consistency to that, but I can’t shake the feeling that, whilst he may have pioneered the bad-boy rockstar persona, a lot of it comes across as crude, crass, and garish— and a way to cover for the fact that he’s a bit of a shit singer. Now in fairness, I’ve only listened to Raw Power, so I might be speaking out of turn. Some of the music was okay- I might even be starting to enjoy some rock music. But Ignacio's voice left me wanting a lot more. Ironically, for an album called Raw Power, I felt Iggy’s voice was actually quite weak. It sounded like he was standing miles away from the microphone. Maybe it was poorly remastered?.. or maybe it’s just the chronic pneumonia he almost definitely has from never getting dressed properly. Music aside, I can’t shake my unease for his image/style. He looks like a Barbie doll that Sid from Toy Story has taken a blowtorch to, namely the face and torso. Face weathered and barely hanging on... with the tits completely melted off and slopped into a nasty mammary puddle on the floor.. leaving this bizarrely ragged, gaunt, and effeminate husk to feebly shout lyrics at me for thirty minutes. That’s not my idea of music. So, while I might appreciate some of the guitar playing, I don’t think I’m a fan of Iggy Pop in any sense. Do yourself a favour, Iggy: grow up, put a shirt on, and pull your fucking trousers up. (2 stars because to be fair, I did get a decent deal on car insurance.)

Just wrote a fucking review and it disappeared ffs. In summary... I like Iggy pop. Don't like his music all too much. It isn't bad. Just isn't for me.

un peu intense pas fini

I know the band name and some of Iggy's solo stuff but I've never listened to any of their albums in full. I instantly recognized "Seek And Destroy" from Pearl Jam. That's a really strong song. I could hear Danzig at times with "Gimme Danger", after that there's a lot of noisy punk energy ("Your Pretty Face...", "Shake Appeal", Death Trip" ) while "Raw Power" is good but it's a "Seek And Destroy" clone. He was channeling Van Morrison on "I Need Somebody". I got the feeling Iggy wasn't sure what voice he wanted to use as a singer, or he was trying to give each tune a different vibe, it didn't feel cohesive because of this. I am glad I tried it but outside of the influence some of these songs had on grunge era bands I'm not sure I see the need to include it on the Top 1001.

Too amateur sounding to be a good rock album but not enough edge to be a good punk album. Some good guitar parts though.

Not terrible but not good either. Not a huge fan of this type of rock. Sounds like something amateurs would make in a garage

Meh. I didn't enjoy this album. Not awful, but not good. Most of the songs weren't memorable and I was a fan of the singer

Interesting, but not for me.

Nahhhh

Surprisingly this album was only so-so for me.

E nok ikkje heilt for meg

This record is filled to the brim with raw punk rock, which can be a cool aesthetic; Especially if you enjoy the dirty sounds of fast and loose rock n’ roll. Others should enjoy it, but the vibe isn’t there for me, personally. Maybe it's the mixing or the singers voice? Hard to say. Favorite track: Raw Power

Iggy Pop has his moments - there are a couple of tracks that shine on this album, but not much more.

Kinda annoying tbh sorry Iggy. It's giving wailing in the garage. Made me feel cool for listening to it tho lmao. Fav Songs: Raw Power

Lots of energy but not my type of music

Simply put - not my jam

May be the fatger of punk but the kids are better looking.

Rock, Punk, 1973 -> 2

мех

"Edgy" 80's rock, Iggy Pop

Imagine a blender on full blast, and that’s Raw Power. It’s raw, all right—raw, obnoxious, and completely void of anything resembling structure. Iggy Pop sounds like he’s yelling over instruments being thrown down a staircase. The production quality is somewhere between “broken radio” and “trash compactor.” This isn’t punk; it’s just noise pollution. By track three, I realized I’d rather hear my neighbor’s car alarm going off all night than endure more of this album.

Couldn't really get this as anything other than a garage band tuning up.

I am really torn with this rating. I originally did not connect with the album at all, but decided to give it another quick listen later in the day. I felt the second listen, it was a better all round experience. I don't know the significance of the album so can't feature this in my scoring so this is scored on personal listening experience. Overall, I can't find myself actively choosing to listen back to this but it's not quite a 3.

Its ok. I respect that this was a pioneering piece of music for punk, but the genre has never really appealed to me in its raw form like this.

This music is not good enough to get away with fucking thirteen year olds.

Felt a bit “meh” about this album. Even gave it a second listen, but just didn’t seem to be able to connect with it on any level.

I love the Stooges but I've never enjoyed this album other than Search and Destroy. Yeah, the mix is famously a mess (and it's still a mess no matter how many times they try to fix it), but i think at the end of the day, the material isn't as strong as it is on Fun House or their debut. Also, I don't love Iggy's performances. The band is going full-tilt, but it's hard to get too excited by it because the arrangements and the mixes are so cluttered. 5-star album cover, though.

This wasn't a good album. At all. The mix was horrible, and unlistenable. The songs were not so bad, especially the guitar solos, but the mix was so utterly horrible that everything just sounded like jumbled up crap. I know this is from 1973, but this doesn't hold up in 2024. There are tons of other artists that do hold up to this day, but The Stooges isn't one of them; well at least this album isn't. I don't think I am ever going to listen to this album again. A couple of songs would have been good had the mix been better, or if it had been recorded a decade or so later, that's why I'll give it 2 stars.

I guess now we know the answer to that age old question : “If you give an infinite number of monkeys an infinite number of electric guitars, what do they make?” A Stooges album.

Honestly didn’t hit as hard as it once did. Loved some of the songs though.

Thought I would hate it and I didn't, but I also didn't like it. Probably not listen again, but wouldn't immediately turn it off it it came on,

Meh, don't love the stooges

Not for me, but appreciate how ground-breaking it was and how it paved the way for Punk Rock

I didn't hate this, but I also wouldn't listen to this again. 2/5

this wasn’t for me. I’m not really into punk music so i feel like I can’t really judge this one because I don’t have a frame of reference or appreciation for it. but I can see why people would be been into this I guess

Sonorità agghiaccianti che fanno muovere il culo.

Expected more

I get that they didn't hit their prime popularity yet but this album feels painfully underproduced. It sounds like Iggy is either yelling from down the hallway or that he's trying not to wake up his parents in the next room. I can't tell. The songs are punchy early punk inspiration material, but I did not enjoy it.

I thought I’d like this more given the type of music I like. This was okay.

I get the title raw power (which was my favorite song on it I guess)...for me it was just a little too much. It was a little all over the place at times. I didn't get or like I Need Somebody. For what it was it was good, but just not my thing exactly.

Not my thing

Starts innovative and cool, descends into noise. I’m sure it was groundbreaking, but isn’t very interesting.

cutti, kalori defisitti.. yritån vähä vähentää painoa pikkase rajotetaa syöntiä... våhä lisää metamfetamiinia ehkä nälis lähtee ehkä ei ois nii nälis mahdollisesti.. jea jea jea rokki rokcl and roll.. ledt 3.... rigt 2... left 4... right 1.... 30 vuotta myöhässä tuli tämä paska album kettä vittu kiinnoataa 1972 tämå ainainen kitara jankutttamime vittu ku tylsää yur pretty face is going to hell

Pretty dull, overall. I don't recall a single interesting track on it.

oh! 😃

Don’t care much for any of the songs here except Penetration (and I Need Somebody, to a lesser degree).

Sometimes I scan the reviews as I’m listening to try and support the vibe of what I’m feeling, and sometimes it’s the complete opposite of what I’m feeling and it throws me. Most comments seem to really dig this and rated it highly but I found it to be fairly mid rock and roll. Not my bag, but I’m happy so many people could rate it 5 stars 😅

Fijn man, echt net waar ik zin in had... Nee, ik snap deze muziek echt niet, vind hier echt bar weinig aan. Jammer, want het begon echt best wel vet, maar dit is weer zo'n album waar 1 of 2 hits op staan, maar de rest echt toch een flink stuk minder is. FAVO: Search and destroy

first song is pretty iconic, rest kinda falls short. not my music, but some songs went hard ig 2/5

1972. Iggy Pop and The Stooges. Produced by Bowie. Kinda loud guitar and blah vocally

just not my thing.

Je ne connaissais de ce groupe que le nom. Rock bien énervé appréciable, et plein de chorus guitare. Search and Destroy++ Par contre j'aime moins les morceaux plus calmes, et très peu le chant. => 2.5/5

I seem to be in the minority. Not enjoyable. 2 stars

'Nother group I never heard of.

Good and rockin, I just want more poppy?

I listened to this 3 times (the Iggy mix once and the Bowie mix twice — and I still can’t discern a difference between the two). To be quite honest, I liked it less and less with every listen. This take feels hypocritical having just given Korn a 3, but the grunting and groaning all over this album was kinda… cringe. That said, I can hear how this album influenced the grunge music of the decade that followed, so, 2 stars.

Slow moving and had nothing standing out to me.

Raw sound

it's so average theres nothing funny

Listened to the Bowie Mix, 2023 remaster. Search and Destroy is a nice opener, catchy and energetic. Gimme Danger is more toned down and psychedelic, some acoustic guitars in the mix. It's weird but I'm enjoying it. Then straight back into hard rock territory on Your Pretty Face. Good riffs and solos. I wish the mixing was a bit cleaner but the guitars still sound good. Penetration is... strange. Sums up this record, a bit of everything, but not all good. The second half is weaker too. It's a miss for me.

Never really been a fan.

Was not a fan of this, something about the singer just puts me off. Middling 2.

Slightly disappointed it wasn't just Curly whooping around here, but Iggy Pop was an artist I've wanted to give a fair shake. The few songs I'd heard through complications were not my favorites, but he has a reputation for the influence in Punk. I can respect the contributions he made, and for this to be a 70s album you can still see some of the lasting impressions he had on the genre. Unfortunately, it's not super exciting in 2024. I had played the deluxe edition with multiple copies of the songs, and when Search and Destroy came up for the second time I thought 'oh, this one sounds familiar and not too bad'. So maybe had I had a couple listens it could grow a bit more on me. Favorite track "Search and Destroy" 2/5

This probably blew minds in the 70's. Now it just blows ass.

I really got into the stooges a while back. I read the biography, I immersed myself in their music. I was really into it. That being said I always felt like this was their weakest album. Search and Destroy is amazing, but the rest of the album does nothing for me. For the record, I listened to the 2023 50th anniversary remaster this time. I feel that it is the best mix of this album.

Bit obvious rock for me.

Not particularly my thing. There's another Stooges album or maybe it was an Iggy solo record that I liked a lot more.

I made it through the album but was not a fan of the music at all.

It was nothing to write home about

Meh. I didn't enjoy this one, but not because it was unskillful playing, it just wasn't my thing. I listened to the Bowie mix, and I scrubbed through a bit of the Iggy Pop mix to hear the differences... nothing can save poor quality original recordings apparently.

Early punk is too chaotic for me. I appreciate it, as well as its fans, but I am glad it has been refined.

Didn't dislike it, but I prefer a bit of distinction between songs and it sort of all ran together for me.

Recording is horrible which makes this album close to unlistenable. The music is ok and nothing I'd listen to again.

Rather dull at length, but no denying this was influental as hell.

I found this disappointing to be honest, after really enjoying Iggy earlier on in the project. The production felt weirdly thin and weedy, and it was all just a bit blah all round. I daresay I'm missing its vital role in the canon, but for me it just wasn't that interesting or pleasant.

I can see that this album was a starting point for the whole punk genre. I didn't listen to the Bowie mix, but the Iggy mix is even for this kind of music of low production quality. The technical possibilities were better at that time. Maybe this is intended, but it makes my experience of this album worse. Iggy was never one of my favorites, and it didn't change with this album.

Not my type of rock 2/5

drivel

Can only go on what I’ve seen on TV but I think Iggy and his Stooges are very much a live act. Can never imagine putting this music on at home to casually listen but when live and with Iggy’s stage act is probably amazing. 2/5 5/4/24

Screamy. First song is awesome, ready is just aiight

Not a fan of this record. I know it is considered a forerunner of several styles but I just couldn't get into it after three listens. I see the energy of the band but maybe the recording is just that terrible, even after a remaster.

I don't remember connecting over it.

I get it.

My rating depends on why I "must" hear an album before I die. If it's based, at least in part, on understanding the history and influences in rock, I'd give this a 3, possibly even 4. But just based on the sound... it's a 2. I see how it influenced punk rock, and I appreciate the raw power (no pun intended!), but if I want to listen to something with similar energy, I'm going to put on Wire or New York Dolls. Since music is mostly meant to be a visceral experience, I'm going with the "sound rating": 2

I can hear the influence these guys had on so many bands that came after. Its raw and in your face. I listened to a lot of punk rock in my day, but I still just didn't love this. I completely understand why it's on this list, just not my cup of tea.

60s punk rock. not for me

Really loud and i hate iggys vocals but it's a product of its time. 2/5

- Okay, but not his best.

Awful, demonic. The forst couple of seconds were ok butit went downhill from there

It was alright. Had a listen to all the Iggy masters and then one or two of the Bowie masters. Not really appreciating the "genius songwriting" or whatever that wikipedia bangs on about. Other 70s acts like the Clash are much more interesting.

It was interesting and I can see why it's a classic but wasn't particularly compelling for me.

This album isn't doing much for me. I can appreciate the energy on this album. It's raw and frenetic, and Iggy bounces from song to song with different vocal inflections and deliveries on each one. It's an album that sounds like the artists were having a blast putting it together. There's a clear aesthetic to this thing that I wish resonated with me a bit more. The intro "Search and Destroy" is probably my favorite track.

Nee deze rock was niks voor mij hoor

It’s okay

This is a bit too heavy for me :D

Too noisy / raw for my delicate sensibilities. I didn't hate it / it didn't give me a headache, but I could tell pretty quickly that this wasn't for me.

I usually like this style of music, but not of these songs were very impressive to me

So... I just didn't like or maybe "believe" his voice. In almost every song, it felt like he was imitating someone else's voice and not well. Weird?

I really want to like The Stooges, but I've concluded they're not really my type of band and I don't think they're very good honestly. I mostly like 'I Wanna Be Your Dog' from their self titled album, but that's it. Haven't really found any other song I like, and that goes for this and their other albums I've heard. I'll give this a strong 2 as it's something I will never return to most likely, and the supposed more popular songs were not to my liking either.

This is a mess. None of the instruments and singing seems to match up. It's chaotic. A lot of the tracks are just generic strumming and some guy screaming about something, I don't know or care what. I just want that idiot to shut up. 2 stars only for some of the guitar playing.

1. zearch and deztroy - 1 2. gimme danger - 1.5 3. pretty face - 1 4. penetration - 1 5. rauu pouuer - 1 6. i need zomebody - 1.5 7. zhake appeal - 0 8. death trip - 1.5

I wanted to enjoy it, but Punk just isn't my scene.

Raw punky sorta thing. Not super into it

Entertaining for one listen, musically limited a band that realistically can only be enjoyed live.

I'm listening to the 50th-anniversary version. the first song is kind of just a basic 60s rock song. it's alright. starts to pick up towards the end. pretty mid tbh.

Another album that's famous for the acts it inspired rather than as a stand alone product

Sounded a bit messy. I get the tone they were going for but it wasn’t for me.

Where Iggy Pop started

I guess I can see how this was a standout at the time. I like the Iggy mix the best, but both have such a weird sound to me. The vocals sound way too clean and subdued for the rest of the musical context, and there's not much musically or lyrically to get excited about.

Each song sounded similar except for two.

Meh. I can see how it was influential, given the times, etc. But I just don't dig it much.

I have been so thankful for the countless albums I’ve discovered through this project that I probably never would’ve run into before. Then there’s some discoveries like Iggy Pop that I wish had remained undiscovered

It starts great but there’s so much better psychedelic rock and i just couldn’t get into it. The first few songs were okay and it’s well made but not for me

Gimme Danger had a bit of an interesting vibe, but otherwise I feel like I would have missed out on absolutely nothing musically if I never listened to the album. The only song I knew already was search and destroy which is annoying at best. Horrible mix, just noise for the most part really. 2 stars intead of 1 just because Iggy Pop is a fucking character, but that's it.

Boring and repetitive. I felt only relief that is was over.

I don’t really know, it was fine. Nothing really stood out as really good or really bad.

That's not my taste in musik.

gimme danger

Not particularly good.

Liked three songs. Mostly, the album was blah: my mind kept drifting.

Very simple and sloppy. The kind of music you make with your first band when you’re 14 years old.

Kannste nicht anhören bei die Qualität, aber krasse story

Yeah, ok

Favorite Tracks: Search and Destroy

just super bland. it’s only a 36 minute album but i found myself just waiting for it to end. the rock songs were better than the blues but can’t say i loved any of it

Sounds very... raw. Not the deliberate, constructed, delicacy kind of raw like sushi or carpaccio. More like half cooked chicken breast on a salad without dressing.

Poco aterrizado. Lo único que tiene de bueno es la confluencia de los estilos de The Doors y Bowie de una manera muy particular, pero como obra independiente no tiene mucho valor.

I am to old for this shit.

Jag tycker det finns något där. Vissa låtar är sköna, men överlag ojämnt och oslipat.

Nåt i mig vill gilla Iggy Pop. Trist. Vem sjunger på första låten? Iggy? Låter väldigt annorlunda.

Didn't care for it unfortunately, and I was quite bored. Maybe it had something to do with me being in the library, but the sound was quite tired *old British lady accent*

This is just not my music. I tried and couldn’t do it.

Ok but not my genre

twas oka

太吵了不喜欢

bija ok, bet otrreiz neklausīšos, next plz

Not really my cup of tea, but can appreciate its place in history.

Not a fan of this genre or era of music

provavelmente é o tipo de som que vem na mente quando falam de "rock paulera", achei meio paia mas é importante pro punk, então meh

Niet voor mij

feel ko may potential pero baka wala ako sa mood

Couldn't get into this one. Some good guitarwork though

I do not like the stooges anywhere near as much as I thought I was going to Search and Destroy is a banger The rest left no impression 2

Not my favorite.

This just sounds like someone trying to make a punk Velvet Underground but with goofy lyrics. Iggy wanted to be controversial so he uses song titles and lyrics like Raw Power! And Penetration! And Your Pretty Face Is Going To Hell! And he just repeats those words over and over! It’s just really, really fucking goofy. I really like Seek and Destroy (although it’s got goofy lyrics, too, but at least they’re not as bad as most of the rest of the album). I Need Somebody is a pretty good haunt of a blues song, though.

Punk isn't my thing, so bleh. I did like "Gimme Danger" as it sort of fell on folk-bluesy motifs.

Maybe I've just listened to too many of these today but this is booooooring. How much of this is gunna be 70's rock? I can only take so much before it all runs together. This sounds like the T. Rex album which sounds like the Joplin album. At least the other two seemed to be having more fun with the whole thing. This album was a chore.

Nicht mein fall

Bowie mix or Iggy mix...Bowie mix or Iggy mix...? I chose Iggy mix. As a whole I'm not the worlds biggest Iggy fan. I like the Tony Hawk song and a few tracks off of The Stooges s/t album. So I went into this with middling expectations and I believe that because of that reason I found myself enjoying this a lot more. It still wasn't mind-blowing or earth shattering for me but there was a little something in each song for me to grab onto and enjoy. Except the title track. That was the only one that did nothing for me. Not sure if I'll go out of my way to listen to this again but I probably won't skip any of these songs if they pop up in shuffle or something. 2

E nok ikkje heilt for meg

It's fine. Nothing spectacular, but a fine punk album

Iggy poop.

Glad we got this one out of the way first. Although not terrible to listen to, I won't go out of my way to listen to a single song from this album again. Sorry Iggy Pop

If you like old school rock this is for you. Personally not my cup of tea.

With older albums I'm always annoyed by the fact that Spotify doesn't have the original versions. Instead they have three different remasterings / mixings with extended tracks... end rant. For the purposes of this review I'm listening to the 50th Anniversary Legacy Edition. I'm not sure why, but I half expected Search and Destroy to lead with the riff from the Metallica song of the same name. Instead we find a super generic and flat mixed pop-punk-rock song. Some raw fretwork going on throughout that sounds similar to The Stones and deserves credit. Gimme Danger gives a soulful performance from Iggy Pop over an otherwise moody and wandering instrumental. I appreciate the interlude around the 2 minute mark that gives the guitarist some room to noodle and explore the space. Feels like a good song to roll a joint to. Your Pretty Face Is Going to Hell is the most intriguing so far. Vocals are delivered in a metal grow that almost sounds like George Thorogood over top of a standard rock progression littered with some face-melting fretwork. Penetration has some of the weirdest mixing here. The instrumental is as if it is being played in the basement and Iggy Pop is standing right next to me on the second level whispering in my ear. Not a fan. Feels like a sloppy mess to me and has some of the weirdest, drugged-out ad-lib groans / monkey noises that call vaguely to Axl Rose in the breakdown on Welcome to the Jungle. Title track features a power riff front and center. Its a rock song. I Need Somebody mixes things up with a slowed down tempo. I find I prefer their slower songs... The instrumentals shine and breath a bit more freely and Iggy can still hold down the center. This one contends for my favorite on the album. The album closes out with Death Trip, which, while it is a fun song with some awesome shredding in the midway point, reminds me heavily of a Doors song in the vocal delivery (I think LA Woman?). Overall, I'm pretty meh on this album though I might have felt differently back in 1973 when it was released. I know Iggy Pop as a rock icon, but not for why. He comes out here as a commanding frontman who could hang with the likes of Morrison or McJagger, but all in all I don't see much interesting in most of the songs outside of I Need Somebody and Your Pretty Face is Going to Hell. I'm all for lo-fi, but the mixing here is just generally poor putting too much emphasis on the vocals and not lending enough space to the individual instrumental components. You could claim the technology of the era, but I've heard better mixing from earlier works. All said I'm a 2 leaning 3 here.

Don't really like his voice and some of the songs sound like each instrument just played their own song and smashed them together and hoped they worked. Also I was not sure if I was supposed to listen to the Iggy Mix or Bowie Mix so I just listened to whatever version came up on Youtube

boring boring boring boring n n n n n na nu n n n n n na nu boring boring boring boring la lu la lu la lu fu cking bo ring (except penetration what a fucking chayooon)

Underwhelming for how much it was kind of hyped up. Search and Destroy is decent. The rest I could take or leave. Brings to mind Alice Cooper’s album from a year earlier.

Meh…

Matiggggg

meh punk, can't get into it

I’ve like the stooges stuff before but this was not Monday morning listening. I’d listen to this if I had just done a bump of coke because I needed to get the tranny out, fixed and back in before sunrise. All by myself without a lift.

pff nee niet wauw

Not a fan.

I kind of enjoyed this album. I'm not a huge Iggy Pop fan so it was nice to listen to something I wouldn't seek out on my own accord. That being said, he looks like Brandon Rogers on the cover of this album.

didn't feel memorable

Kinda boring

It must have sounded extraordinary once upon a time but it doesn’t stand up particularly well now Feels like a great sound but not enough for a song let alone an album

Not for me.

Just the sort of raw noise that has long given rock and roll a bad name.

Too angry for me

I wasn't too familiar with The Stooges, but on first listen Raw Power is a good name for this cause it is rough and rowdy. You can hear the really early punk sound. The mixing is kinda shit, but I feel like it fits? Interesting back story on the production of the record. Iggy Pop is keeping it real in how he sings and screams. He just kind of does his own thing, like he's improv-ing. The song Penetration sure is an interesting one, he's really horny and it kind of leaves you feeling scared. This genre is not my favorite, but it was short so I'm okay with it. It might have too much raw power for me.

Not a fan

Search and Destroy is the only song I enjoyed

Early punk, not horrible, but without any appeal whatsoever. 2/5

Dadests of rocks

This was more melodic than I was expecting. But it was still a bit of a bloody racket. I've never really bought into Iggy. Sorry. It's too crude for my sensitive tastes. The man needs a good a good shirt and jumper.

I need somebody is interesting, the rest of the album sounded like a mess to me. I guess I just don’t like this kind of raw power.

Puissance brute certes mais un peu trop. Trop bruyant, trop fouillis.

Too rowdy for me.

Nothing really appeals to me

Not a huge fan

Not for me

not feeling it.....

“Raw Power” is rough, savage, primal, the sound of some missing-link creature emerging from a swamp and throttling the listener for 33 minutes. It’s usually just as painful and agonising as it is intriguing and compelling. I went between both mixes of the album before listening in full. I ended up sticking with the Bowie version to reflect the original release, but I’d like to put the debate to an end with my two cents: on a technical level, they’re both terrible. Over-compressed and heavy-handed or pulled taut and thin like glass, muffled sludgy low-end or drums made of paper… you decide. The Stooges aren’t out to be virtuosos, so instrumentals are rudimentary: this is fine, if the songs can leap out and attack, which some do. “Search and Destroy” is certainly an attention-grabbing opener: serrated, forceful power chords, strangled drums, as much of a hook as we’re likely to get here. “Shake Appeal” crashes in like the twisted ugly stepfather of “My Sharona”, immediate and full of character. Iggy’s persona is on form throughout: snarling, sneering and soaring. Unfortunately, for me it just doesn’t feel enough. For such a lean, tight running time of 33 minutes, an awful lot of the tracks end up outstaying their welcome. “Gimme Danger” saps out the momentum as early as the second track, with its cloying tempo and squalling strings trying to be Velvet Underground. “I Need Somebody” feels interminable: respect to Iggy for giving the slow, swampy blues a go, but he gives himself nowhere to go after the first minute and they really don’t do a lot for him. By the time Iggy was rasping and rattling his way through “Death Trip”, I was willing it to end. I don’t want to discount Iggy Pop as a performer. His stage presence and showmanship is undeniably mesmerising, and would have given these songs a real lease of life. But sadly, that’s not how they’ve been immortalised here, dogged by a weak sound and awkward sequencing.

Ok. Couple fun songs

It was okay I guess

You can feel this is the birth of punk. Dirty rock&roll rockabilly kinda stuff. Iggy Pop doing what Iggy does. The bad sound quality kinda ruins the whole thing for me though, I get it, this was the 70s and all, but yeah.

Gimme Danger was alright, everything else was painful to listen to. Maybe that was the point? He did yell, "OWWW!" a lot.

DNF. Too loud

I guess I'm not into the Stooges. What I really can't understand is why this group would be on this list more than once, given all of their work pretty much sounds the same.

Olipahan tylsä

Probably won’t come back to this record but I enjoyed checking it out. Iggy pop reminds of Anthony Keidis sometimes and I can definitely hear the influence on some of RHCP punkier stuff. I liked the distorted sound that saturates everything. This “proto-punk” sound kinda just sounds like 60’s Rolling Stones or early Who to me. I think the appeal in the stones thing was a rock feel that was super sloppy and felt like it could fall apart at any point but never did. It’s actually super hard to get right and I think the stooges totally get that thing better on this album than any stones band could. It definitely has that rock thing (“raw power”??) that I thought the Smiths were really lacking. 2.5

If this record was on at ethyls or rocka rolla, I’d be into it. Great background music for a Brooklyn bar. I usually get bored by anything in this genre and this was maybe a little bit more interesting than some. I want to like punk more than I do. Just kinda sounds like mediocre rock n roll

I didn’t like this.

Sounds like a cover version of itself. It’s half an hour of rock and roll noises.

Some of the sounds are nice but the overall mixing feels so muddy and samey.

Didn’t really enjoy it but I Need Somebody was ok

Mediocre in every way. Niet slecht, maar niet goed. Saai.

More like raw noise. This has moments – but feels more like acting out or rage-y posturing than any important musical artifact. Iggy was all in and the guitars squall just about like you'd expect. Sure it's touch and gritty, but there isn't much beyond "Gimme Danger" to actually, you know, enjoy. The reissues are startlingly better engineered so one can at least hear a few instruments, but still ... one sincerely hopes there are better (and more elevating) things to hear as one approaches one's demise.

Gimme danger - Screaming fuzzy guitars are great. Not a huge fan of the vox. Penetration - like the groove. Really nice disassociation as the song flows. Vox are much more tolerable. Overall: not my cup of tea. Low relisten value. 3 mics outta 5

It’s not bad but there are definitely way better albums out there. For what it is, it’s not terrible.

not for me

4/10. I zoned out and didn't hear the lyrics of 'penetration' until like 30 seconds from the end, so I think that was a win.

On the concluding song of 'Raw Power,' when lead singer Iggy Pop, a self-professed ‘sick boy (both physically and emotionally)… barely(?!) losing grip’ invites us to accompany him on a ‘death trip,’ I don’t think he’s speaking figuratively. 'Fun House,' The Stooges preceding LP, almost wore me out, but remained fun nonetheless. 'Raw Power,' by contrast, reveals a band no longer having much fun, but only wanting to ‘Search And Destroy’- ‘I’m the world’s forgotten boy, the one who’s searchin’, only to destroy, hey!’ Charles Manson was looking to do the same thing a couple of years before with butcher knives and guns. Iggy’s intent, however, is simply to fuck you to death. I don’t believe his goal, necessarily, is murder. But you might beg to differ after hearing his vocals on ‘Penetration.’ No tender love there, just straight-up predatory animal lust. Someone’s bound to get hurt. And anyone who would choose to stay in his presence after hearing this song is probably on their own ‘death trip’ as well. ‘I needed love but I only lost my pants, and that ain’t all,’ he recalls on ‘Your Pretty Face Is Going to Hell.’ On ‘Shake Appel,’ a fifties sounding rock n’ roll number, if it were to follow a couple of pulls off a meth pipe, he describes his paramour as having shake appeal, and the ‘Fit’s so tight… I gotta bite.’ Perhaps the title track best sums up Iggy’s petulant state of mind: ‘Don’t you try to tell me what to do. Everybody’s always trying to tell me what to do.’ Yeah, well, somebody’s gotta assert some kind of discipline to keep this thing in check. The whole band is out of control, as well as the folks recording and mixing on the other side of the broken glass. 'Raw Power' in a word? Frenetic. Why the odd inclusion of two ballads (‘Gimme Danger’ and ‘I Need Somebody’) in the midst of this bedlam is anyone’s guess. Maybe to calm things down? Fat chance of that. The Stooges easily pick up the pandemonium on the next song. And truthfully, these are the better numbers anyway, when The Stooges’ handlers just give up and let the boys run free- wild guitar soloing by James Williamson, the brothers Asheton assaulting their respective instruments while Iggy howls at the moon and grunts at women and snaps his teeth at everyone else. I loved The Stooges first two LPs. This one, however, I neither intend to search for again (at least any time soon), nor to destroy. I doubt there’s much left anyway, as these things typically tend to self-destruct.

Two good songs at the start with a load of shite afterwards.

Mmmmmm not my favorite. I could see how it was groundbreaking in its time, but I just can’t get much from it. Also the recording or compression through streaming makes it sound pretty awful. 4/10

Best Song: Search and Destroy. Liked the wild ending. Worst Song: Gimme Danger. Feels like Iggy Pop is cosplaying as Jim Morrison here. Overall: Plodding, punkish music that slips frequently into different genres and attempts to do what others have done much better.

É bom para quem gosta de rock n roll, mas não é muito meu gosto.

Sounded a bit flat and samey.

This is the third album from the Stooges. The band took more of a hard rock approach for this album and recently it has been considered a forerunner of punk rock. The album was not immediately popular, but gained a cult following over time. The name "Raw Power" suits the album well because its music is loud and proud. This album influenced rock, metal, and punk music at release and for the decades to come. I appreciated the classic sounding hard rock / punk music on this album, but the songs can be so chaotic at times that it's hard to really absorb the whole thing. This album may take me a few more listens to really comprehend the entire piece of music history.

Absolutely meh.

I've never been a fan of Iggy Pop and I did not enjoy this album. Search and Destroy is a good track and Gimme Danger isn't bad depending on the version of it. But the rest of it is just growly and displeasurable. Giving it a 2 because I'm very picky about what I give a 1.

Raw Punk. Simple and in your face. Not a fan of the opening track "Search and Destroy", but quite enjoyed the others. "Gimme Danger" has that mellow start that gets offset at the end of the song with a strong, driving guitar. "Penetration" (my favorite on this album) has a nice xylophone sound in the back that holds the line and gets stuck in your brain, jumping octaves and just ever present. Solid album that I enjoyed. Wish I had uncovered back in my high-school days. B- (as an aside ... Spotify rolled into "Down on the Street" off of The Stooges "Fun House" album. Fantastic song.)

2/10/2022 Today's Album: "Raw Power" by The Stooges - This album definitely exceeded my expectations, with the title and album causing me to expect some overblown and out of control punk outfits. However, this album is able to do what the earlier pink flag record couldn't and that is to implement subtlety into their hard rock. The first song didn't blow me away, but was still quite listenable. The vocalist sounds more grungy than the usual heavy punk act in the early 70s and I quite like it. The second song Gimme Danger is actually quite laid back with a generally great vocal performance. And okay yeah the third song, Your Pretty Face Is Going to Hell is more of what I expected. His vocals sound disgusting and the instrumentals sound like such generic hard rock aside from what is fairly decent guitar work. Penetration takes things back down a notch and is definitely enjoyable. There's a mysterious guitar and keys riff that accompanies fairly strange and eclectic vocals that match the energy of the album quite well. Very creepy vibe which matches the title and subject matter of the track. And going right back to shit, the title track Raw Power is so boring and generic and offers little to nothing in terms of a cohesive melody. The instrumentation doesn't change it up enough to make the boring lyrics and vocal performance listenable and it actually sounds like the singer is bored singing this track. The only saving grace is somewhat decent guitar playing again. Yet again, this next track strips things back and really offers a solid bluesy track about needing somebody. I don't understand how this band is able to switch between sounding so terrible and then pretty decent, but I Need Somebody is a pretty great track. After skipping around the last 2 tracks I decided they were similar to the louder, shitter songs that are scattered throughout this record. This album has 3 decent songs and 5 that are borderline unlistenable. It is disappointing given how much the highlights on this LP show promise, but it really isn't enough to save this album in my eyes. Score: 3 Inconsistent Highlights: Gimme Danger, Penetration, I Need Somebody

so that's who iggy pop is. forgettable, but at least it's short.

Was ok, didn't do too much for me

Overrated.

There's a couple of iggy pop songs I really like passengers, lust for life etc, but I haven't really listened to a whole album. When this came up I was very excited to listen to hidden gems or the hear the vision in full was a but disapoi ted it was all a bit dull. Right sounds attitude etc just a bit dull don't know why. Soz Ìgger

Didn’t really listen too much because it was making me really sleepy driving home.

I think I liked a couple of songs, the rest I found almost unlistenable.

Only a few good songs, which were ruined by poor recording quality. Other songs were just plain repetitive, either in the music or in the lyrics.

Sounded a bit messy. I get the tone they were going for but it wasn’t for me.

Er meh. Guitar is really good, but not a huge fan of Iggy.

Begon erg sterk maar na een paar nummer verviel het in alleen maar geschreeuw en scheurende gitaren. Jammer.

Ik had Iggy een hoger cijfer gegund maar dit vond ik gewoon herrie.

not to my taste

Decent punk album.

Decent enough but nothing to write home about.

Raw, nasty, visceral energy. I wouldn't know that Bowie produced this if I didn't see it in Wiki. Although this was highly influential proto-punk its not my jam.

Second Listen. 2/5 for me this time. I think it's good, but need to hear more.

IP: What’s that needle bouncin’ back and forth on the board there? Engineer: That’s the volume unit meter… if if gets into the red, things may get a bit distorted. IP: You ‘erd him boys, keep it in the red.

Couldn’t really get into it, mix and master sound really bad

I didn't get much sleep and I'm really not in the mood for the FUCKING stooges. Jesus Christ how does this list always know just how to piss me off? "Proto punk" can go fuck itself up its own arse. 2/5.

This album is like really relevant for punk history, I just don't quite like it.

Just not my bag, really.

I can see why this was popular at time. It's gutsy and energetic. However, I wasn't that into it, not really my cup of tea

I was completely taken aback by the awful mixing and everything clipping, and thought there must be something wrong with my headphones at first. After reading the wiki page it seems this is intentional, and there are multiple mixes of the album out there with varying levels of distortion. I went with the Iggy Pop mix anyway and it was basically unlistenable, which is a shame because some of the songs sounded like they could be good if they were mixed well. I get that this is an "important" album in that it basically started punk as a genre, so have to acknowledge that, but I wouldn't listen to this mix of these songs again. Out of curiosity I went and tried the Bowie mix, and it's also bad but in a different way (levels all over the place). But it's at least a lot more listenable.

Pretty good rock and roll album

Little variation

I can see the influence from this album, but didn’t find it particularly catchy in anyway for me.

Very old sounding. Not very special imho? Kinda typical melodies. Audio feels a bit too sharp and overblown. something Gijs would love? Not for me. Second half of the album a bit better.

Sorry this was just noise that sounded all the same. I tired to like it but found myself drifting away.

Hmmm. It kind of sounded like I thought it would. I bet it sounded great / amazing / different in 1973, but I guess I prefer all the people who were inspired by it...

A less refined Iggy and album in general. Not great. Bet the Bowie mix was epic though.

Zeker raw power! Ik houd daar niet zo van.

My favorite track was "Gimme Danger" -- The rest was a little too raw and powerful for my tastes.

Crazy punk music. 4/10

I can get into some Iggy stuff. This album, not so much. I find most of it sophomoric and tiresome if I'm being honest. Just sonic testosterone.
