Reviews (page 9 of 12)
this is the most three-star of all the three-star albums to ever grace this list. it's fine but uninspiring. lackluster but not frustrating. truly, unapologetically mid to the end. favorites: search and destroy, gimme danger, penetration
Classic American rock. Nothin too transcendent on a first go.
You can tell that this is a group that is really trying something new, as they've got that unrefined kind of sound. It does get credit from me for that, but ultimately, I don't think it goes far enough.
Good but repetitive Some good songs should give it another listen i think
Bit rough around the edges, but still had a good time listening to it. Songs were very hit and miss for me though. F.s Your Pretty Face is Going to Hell
I defo think they put their best song first. Rest of the album was okay but the first song is a classic. Still a great song.
good background music: incomprehensible lyrics, changes around enough to be interesting, not depressing, sort of feel badass, which helps me feel productive(?) or disappear into myself internally(??)
Not bad
Lo volveré a escuchar.
This isn't my jam but can see why kids would have like this kind of raw straight ahead punk in your face kinda stuff when it came out.
Not bad, but today wasn’t really the day for it. I think I’ll need to revisit it.
is all 70s rock the same? but it's clear how impactful records like this really are. without this era, there's no Green Day, Strokes, Nirvana, Foo Fighters, etc.
Raw Power? More like boomer power. Not my vibe
Ok
59/100 Based on this scale: 1 star - 0 to 19 2 stars - 20 to 39 3 stars - 40 to 59 4 stars - 60 to 79 5 stars - 80 to 100 High three stars. Fun punk rockish album.
Sounds like The Hives and at time The Rocky Horror Picture Show or The Foo Fighters.
this album was redeemed by Iggy Pop going "uhuuuuuaaa nya nya nya nya nya nya"
How is it possible for Iggy Pop to look in good shape but disgusting at the same time? Anyway decent listen, 3 stars.
Solid mid table album.
You can instantly tell its iggy pop. Which give me some bit of comfort. Never really listen to the stooges stuff. Don't know what I was expecting, but I wasn't disappointed. I'm just so relived that I could actually listen to this album without waiting for it to end like I have for the last couple of albums. Although why spoil it by having a song at the end that was 2 minutes too long.
The album wasn't bad, but I felt like it could've been better. I ended up listening to both the Bowie version and the Iggy version, and I think the latter was better.
Decent punk
not terrible. will I listen to it again? maybe. 3/5
Listened to the Bowie mix and started the Iggy mix. Interesting
omg, like half of this album's Wikipedia page is about the various mixes. I'm not a big fan of any of them -- it does kinda sound like it was mixed in one day from three tracks on a mixer from the 1970s -- but there are some good guitar solos here.
Emh....too raw!
not too into it
Not my cup of tea
Good album, fun, raw very punk. Doesn't really go much more than surface deep. Riffs are very rudimentary Repeats: search and destroy, your pretty face is going to hell
Iggy has some good energy. The songs are alright
I liked it, but wouldn’t want to listen to an evening of this music.
Sure. Fine. Just think of Sawyer w/number one, though. In a good way.
Music from another generation. I can rock to it, but nothing catches my ear from this album.
I get it. I get Iggy. I get the Raw Power single. I know it's importance. But it doesn't move me.
Just too much going on for my head
In context, quite excellent, very important and groundbreaking work. Upon listening though, it's good. I liked it.
Nice driving beat and guitar, definitely a fun listen
This was a pretty rad record and was easy to listen to for me. I can definitely see how this could have been such a big influence on the punk scene. I bet for the time it was really crazy but listening to it now it's a good punk record but there isn't anything that really stands out as unique or exciting. Without the context and history I'd just feel like it was a pretty good punk record.
Didn't love for running, the sound mix seemed off with one headphone in. Pry should be running with both headphones but then I worry about not hearing cars so I guess that's the world I'm living in.
It's all kind of the same. But a good same if that's what you like.
I try to imagine the context of this record with the brash and irreverent Iggy Pop brandishing his animal aura. The music itself is solidly a rock/punk romp with sneer and attitude. It's also kind of quaint considering how far the boundaries continued to push from that point in time and history. To be fair, Iggy did continue to progress gracefully, or in a punk sense, right haggardly.
Get songs....raw power search and destroy and penetration with the Bells
By all means, this album should be a 2/5. However, when considering historical context, it's a begrudging 3. Overall forgettable.
eeh
Best punk so far
Decent, you can hear what it led to, but nothing particularly compelling.
I like it. I don't love it. The Sex Pistol and Black Flag obviously listened to it. The 50th anniversary edition is too long. Just listen the Iggy mix songs. Everything else is filler. Favorite song: Shake Appeal.
kao dobro al nis posebno
A muddied, distinct sound of garage rock that is as dysfunctional as it is original
Very cool album, but a lot of the songs are quite simple. I know this is some of the charm of old punk, but they do this better on their self-titled album.
Un poco rollo.
Total rock album. Kinda faded into the background for me.
Loud, early punk.
It's rock and roll with the lead singer sounding like they were the early precursors of metal. Not in my alley but can tolerate it
For whatever reason I expected this to be much more straight-ahead punk and not nearly so glam as it is.
Best song - Search and Destroy
Old school rock vibe, exactly as you can imagine that.
nesaprotu, kurš labprātīgi klausās šo mūziku
proto punk is so polarizing, and i'm surprised i even enjoyed this album when proto punk is typically straight up loud and brash and unappealing. to be fair, this album didn't only have proto punk, and a good thing too because gosh that genre usually leaves such a bad taste in my mouth. i think part of it was the lyrics, which seem to be more substantial than a lot of punk (of any time or variant), but they still have that punk attitude--i sure did laugh at the title of "your pretty face is going to hell." also, raw power doesn't have the same unpolished sound as a lot of other proto punk bands. i wonder if that was david bowie's impact? as a final note, i felt there were some the replacements vibes at times. even though they were more post-punk, both band did infuse rock and focused on their lyrics. "i need somebody" almost sounds like a song the replacements could've created.
For proto-punk, this was super palatable. It wasn't quite as noisy or discordant as a little of proto-punk is, but it still certainly carried the spirit. It was a very quick album coming in just a bit over 30 minutes; it went hard and left it all on the table in that short period. The production doesn't sound great, but that honestly adds to the punk charm of this album. All in all, I was happy with the listen, which I wasn't expecting, given the genre!
A little bloated and I wasn't entirely sure which version I was meant to listen to, but it was a pretty good album. 3.5/5 Fav track: Search and Destroy
Fun and energetic, easy to enjoy this. Not sure I'll be playing it over and over again, but a solid album. Three and a half. Fave track: Search and Destroy
its good. Iggy been doin this since ever but it had nothing mor too offer than good. I liked it
Better than I thought it would be but still not my vibe.
A pretty straight forward old school punk album. It was a decent listen but not my go to by any means. I enjoyed it enough but probably wouldn't reach for it again. Stand out tracks: Search and Destroy, I Need Somebody
Very raw indeed. Very loud, but contains some very cool songs.
little bit plain not terrible not brilliant
Started with the Bowie remix before switching to the Iggy mix, which just felt fuller and more powerful
Good album but not my favorite
Uneven
Have not listened to this album for a long time and really enjoyed it. 3/5.
Pretty punchy and some great guitar work.
Didn't know any songs beforehand. It was alright.
Hard to get past the recording quality. Jarring changes in volume that have nothing to do with dynamics in the composition. Sloppy playing doesn’t make it “punk.” The song “lRaw Power” could be half as long. As Pru lLeith would say “it’s a bit rough and ready.“ I “Need Somebody” is a template for STP, definitely get the feeling they listened to this stuff a lot. Just not a big fan of Iggy Pop. I sort of get what he’s trying to do but the drug-addled bad boy with no regrets schtick just isn’t that appealing, especially in a historical context. Do like the heaviness and riff sensibility though.
I like some tracks but most are meh
1 song added, good discovery
Loud and crazy rock album. Enjoyed it overall, but have never heard of the group before.
its was alr
I know that the Stooges are regarded as one of the founders of the punk movement, but I just have never been a fan of Iggy Pop. "Search and Destroy" I had heard before, and it was interesting to listen to both mixes. Iggy's made it sound more like a band from the 70s, where as Bowie's mix made it sound like a band from earlier, interestingly enough. The new members of the band did a good job; I should have listened to the whole Legacy Edition to hear how they played some of the older stuff live. Iggy's noises and such never impressed me, though. It just sounds goofy in this day and age. I guess then it worked but now? Not so much. Maybe if I heard it back when I was more into punk I would have appreciated it, but now it just sounds like garage DIY rock to me. Ok, but not mind-blowing.
Still not blown away. I feel like The Stooges got too many albums on this list (one likely would've sufficed). No doubt this is a big album in the evolution of punk, and I liked a few songs a fair bit (Search and Destroy, Penetration, the title track, Shake Appeal). But I can't quite get to a 4.
Iggy doing what he does best.
Never really listened to the Stooges, new of Iggy's influence and can def hear in this album.
Sounds to me like standard Brit punk pretty much. Fine
Honestly didn't give this the attention it probably deserves. Enjoyable enough though.
Loud, preferred the Iggy versions.
Proto-punk. Powerful, but limited in lyricism.
Sympa, classic rock 7/10
very avant garde!!!
Decent album, but I'm less taken with this one compared to most stooges stuff. It seems less energetic to me. 3.25/5
Gimme Danger and Search and Destroy totally hold up. Old school cool and timeless as well. The rest of the album suffers from some dated sounds, like the weird Robert Plant style sex vocal sounds, but other than that, really solid record. Not a routine re-listen for me but I'd re-visit it every 5 years or so gladly.
3.5 Funny, just a couple days ago Gimme Danger was shuffled into my Spotify session, and I was like “Damn, this is a good song, wonder if we’ll be seeing more Stooges on our list?” Well, ask and you shall receive. One of the most aptly titled albums out there and so incredibly influential on the entire punk genre to come (Kurt Cobain even once named it as his personal favorite of all-time). I find it kind of interesting that The Stooges are considered a precursor to punk considering that they arguably go much harder than many of the bands claimed to have invented it - though there are definitely similarities (tell me Your Pretty Face is Going to Hell couldn’t be a Misfits song). A lot of that raw sound can be chalked up to Iggy’s studio production inexperience, which I think simultaneously does both wonders and a disservice to the songs here. For that reason, there are apparently two different versions of the album - the Iggy Pop mix and the David Bowie mix, who was brought in by the record label to try and save it. Normally when an album has a remixed version, I feel like it’s not too drastically different, but man, in this case it’s a tale of two producers. Iggy’s is loud, messy, and sounds like the audio is clipping half the time, but embodies the uninhibited punk spirit so well. Bowie’s on the other hand is much cleaner and highlights the individual personality and technicalities of each song a little better. I listened to each multiple times to try and compare and contrast, and sitting here now I still couldn’t tell you which version I like more. Regardless of which one you’re listening to, I think this album starts phenomenally and slowly becomes less remarkable as it goes on - the opening tracks are amazing and among the best of Iggy’s career, but I really didn’t care for the stuff closer to the end like Shake Appeal and Death Trip. So, that being the case, I think I prefer Iggy’s mix for the first half of the album, which makes a punk song like Search and Destroy sound absolutely EXPLOSIVE and a ballad like Gimme Danger feel absolutely gritty, but when you get to the stuff closer to end that has less flavor or personality to it, it just feels kind of unlistenable. So, point Bowie on Side B, as he was able to take songs that felt like skips on Iggy’s mix and give them a life of their own, giving me the realization of, “Oh, there really is a song buried in there.” Either way you slice it, this is a good album, but I just don’t feel like it finishes anywhere near as strong as it starts. Could probably be a 4 from me on a good day, but I really only see myself regularly coming back to the first two tracks.
Love Iggy’s energy and the subversive nature of it.
Not as layered as I’d like it to be, very raw voice but other than that the spirit of the band isn’t doing it for me, there aren’t many layers to it in the sense of John Paul jones level of d’orchestraux + page guitar skill playing and bonzo drums it ends up feeling a bit otherwhelming but the character of it is very entrancing and it’s mainly iggy who’s doing it all for me as I listen
A fun energetic album with the starts of punk rock in there. Will save a few songs for the 70's and punk rock playlists.
Starts off quite strong and was like this could be great. Now I've finished it I am not too sure. I think the title track kinda sucks but there is some great stuff here....its arguably better than a 3, but not too sure I can justify a 4...
More Iggy Pop! I gather the album is a major touchstone in the history of Rock music--and it sounds like a perfect reference for the classic rock sound--but the music didn't hit for me. Lots of shreddy guitar strumming and vocals that were simultaneously cool and felt kind of limp. Put a copy in the library but not in your personal collection if you ask me.
I bought this ages on a whim as lots of musicians rate. It’s ok. Some gems, some meh. It does sound quite murky though.
The remaster can't disguise this had aged pretty badly but I can appreciate the energy.
3.75
production is rough
Some good guitar riffs, but verges on evil - slash - screamy.
Hmmm I already listened to this one? Weird. Maybe it's because I started a couple days before starting the group. Anyways this was my review last time.... Punk rock bro.
Un poco rollo
Okay - not my favorite, but there are elements in it that I like
Fifth Iggy Pop album. Feels like it’s intentional at this point. 3.5/5
I liked it
I recall being more impressed with a prior outing by this band. Nothing against this, but I'm not convinced I was all that innovative in 1973.
This was fun, would listen again
I enjoyed “Funhouse” more. Maybe because it was better produced.
The stooges/Iggy always have moments for me where they sound awesome but sadly just not consistently through their albums. Maybe it's Seinfeld effect though where they invented the sound and now it sounds generic after so many acts have followed and copied them
it’s okay i guess.
Not my favourite genre of rock, but a solid album. Iggy Pop has a unique voice that makes the album interesting. 3/5
3/5. A solid collection of rock songs and lot heavier than previous albums but there is something missing in the energy. I don’t feel the passion from Iggy like I should. It’s still good but can sound generic at some points.
Fave songs: Search and destroy, Gimme Danger, Penetration, I need sonebody, shake appeal
Ok album, enjoyed the two listens. None of the songs really drew me in so I'm rating it a 3.
Indeed: This is raw power! But that means that the music could have done with some work here and there. Certainly not as good as other album by The Stooges.
One of those LPs that recalls a misspent yoof. Hard to love sometimes but hugely influential.
Un poco rollo
Okay
Raw Power is a fitting name for the album. It is indeed very raw and punkish.
I know Iggy is the founder of punk or whatever, and this is a solid punk album, but I'm still not convinced he deserves as much credit as he gets. It's good, but it's not THAT good.
Good album to listen to when tired, stressed or in a need of a bit of energy boosting music. Amazing guitar solos. Good stuff.
Search And Destroy! The whole thing sounds dated and beat to hell but i guess that's its appeal. To me this is another museum piece.
Sex, Drugs, and Rock'n'Roll. All starting with capital letters. Isn't it what Iggy Pop and The Stogges are known for.
Album van de Amerikaanse hard rock/ punk band (Iggy and) the Stooges.
I like it, Your Pretty Face is Going to Hell was probably the stand out track to me. I liked the growling and aggressive sound. Pretty simple instrumentation, not over produced, it’s a really solid rock album.
Good album
It was catchy and raw but the production was terrible and a lot of what was probably fresh about it then has since been done to death
Definitely see the production value and musical experimentation but just not for me. The vocals are a little grating. Also didn’t give it the time it deserved by playing it in the background of a video game
the dumbest parts of the stooges turned up to 11
Good, not great
Not bad
Classic.
Me gusta musicalmente, a veces vocal y liricamente raro
Nothing really impressed me about this album. It was pretty standard fare
It's punk, alright. The band members feel like they're all playing different songs and the energies are all over the place. Also, there's maybe 3 or 4 different mixes of this album for some reason? Just stop trying. Leave it be. It's just fine.
Solid

a good record but I think just a 3 from me. I like the 'raw'-ness of this record but also found it made things feel a bit... lazy? (production-wise) anyway a good record overall
Second The Stooges album on this list, but it feels like I've listened to the same record twice. Not much change in style, still "Raw Power" garage rock from seventies, which just seem to be grossly outdated at this point. At now I also know what to expect from Iggy Pop, so no reason to double down on my antipathy for his singing. Probably a great album in its time, full of energy and raw emotions, but 50 years have passed, and with it out idea of how to show those emotions in a more modern way.
It's alright
A weak song collection
I liked this more than the self-titled album, even though I prefer “I Wanna Be Your Dog” to “Search and Destroy”. (I think.) I’m not really sure why.
It seems The Stooges steadily improved with each album - this one is in solid 3 / 3.5 territory. Arguably Fun House actually had more 'raw power', but maybe this album has more 'fun'? In the sense that tighter song structures and a greater variation in tempo and dynamics are more fun to listen to, right? I maintain that Iggy's solo career (including his very decent recent albums) has the better material, but accept that for pure, feral energy and influence on music history The Stooges had something about them.
Good
It was good but feels kind of basic know. I would give it a 3.5 out of 5 if I could.
Score: 70 Album art: 70 Nothing says raw power like 4s with people clapping along to the entire song I really loved the first 2 songs. After that there wasn't as much that I enjoyed, and I feel like the album devolves into better than average punk music. Just a bummer it didn't go more in the direction of the first 2 songs. Also there is a song where he starts meowing so that's fun. I listened to the iggy mix and I liked it, I thought the messier production was interesting and made each song more unique. The performances are good and they elevate this higher than just basic punk/rock music. It's closer to a 3 than 4
Pas dépaysé
on se surprend plus Robert ....
The background noise of a crying kid next to me at the airport really tied together this album for me. Because Iggy Pop makes kids cry. Because he touches them. I still stand by the fact that this is good music and I would like to see him in concert. Maybe in the future, once we’re both in hell.
Good
Punk Rock Bro
Not bad. Keep me in it all the way through but nothing made me hit repeat.
The album is a bit of a musical mess, by design probably. The songs grew tiresome after the second listen, but there was a couple of highlights. As for what mix is better, it depends on what kind of sound you are more looking to listen too. Bowies mix is slightly more pop oriented while Iggys remix is more rough around the edges. They both have their upsides. Album is not bad but not one I am looking to listen to again. FAVORITE SONGS: - Gimmie Danger - I Need Somebody 2.75/5
Good beats, not a huge fan of the vocals on all of the tracks
Ok, not bad. Not my favorite.
3.5
- Out of tune singing and nonsense words are really rad. Love the emotion - Guitar riffs clearly has it's influence still today hearing from songs like - Penetration on the current rock and indie sounds - Drums are driving, wish I could hear a little more cymbal - Not a huge fan of a few of the guitar solos but some are really sick - I Need Somebody is a good song but feels slightly out of place, can't tell if I like the juxtaposition. Riffs are really awesome though so I'm leaning on I like it. The off beat entrances before the beat and the arpeggiated riffs on the guitar are nice - Shake Appeal riff is not my cup of tea - Death Trip as well not really my vibe at the beginning. Feels a bit messy and lacks the chaotic but catchy quality of the rest of the album. As the track develops it gets a little better as the energy picks up. I dig some of his shouting vocals on this. Feels like proto metal screaming vocals
This was a unique album, I didn't know anything about the stooges and was surprised that 1973 could be that aggressive. I could see this being useful if you're struggling in the gym or something, it's like a big kick up the ass, all raw power and energy. But for me, it's probably a bit much, a little too raw and by the end I was grateful that it was only half an hour. It's an interesting one, but I don't think I can go higher than 3 because it's not an album I'm likely to come back to. Favourite track is gimme danger
Instrumentals are great, but the vocals don't do it for me at all. I feel like a lot of the value here is in pushing comfort zones for lyrics and style for later rock, punk, and grunge artists.
Solid rock album. Probably would like it more with time
First Listen: -Performances: This is one of those albums that keep telling me you don’t have to have a great voice to make great music. Iggy’s voice really rides the guitar in most of tracks, the wails in “Your Pretty Face” and “Penetration” are just awesome! I also love how he uses a lower tone in “Shake Appeal” and “Death Trip”. -Production: Iggy’s mix of the album can really turn some people deaf, not gonna lie. While I think his version of mix goes well with the tone and overall sound that the goes for, his wails and the guitar solos can really be a turn off to the album. It’s not a big deal, just a little nitpick. Comparing that to David Bowie’s mix, it’s not even a debate that Iggy’s version is superior. Bowie’s mixing takes away many of characteristics that make the album “the album”, I can appreciate that he was attempting to make The Stooges seem accessible to the but all it does put the band down for most pf the record, have the guitar and Iggy’s voice only heard, just to have them EQ’d the shit of them. Still didn’t stop me from enjoying the album again though. Score: light to decent 7
first listen definitely raw and loud
Good
Inoffensive. Which as a review is probably offensive to the Stooges.
Straight forward rock. Fairly distorted guitar, vocals have a bit of a whiney sound
Classic
Not bad! I didn’t like this as much as I thought I would, but I didn’t mind it.
It's Iggy Pops Band and featured Search and Destroy. May grow on me over time.
Oh Iggy. A little slow, but enjoyable.
Heard it before?: No Enjoy it?: Yeah, it’s got a gritty feel to it, one you feel an instant connection to Favourite song: Track 6 - I Need Somebody
This is what I thought punk rock was. Instead, we got the mainstream bands like Devo and B52s
It's a problem. This album was clearly revolutionary and (with the Monks) one of those proto punk albums that was revolutionary at the time. The problem is it's been recycled by every scuzz rock yawn fest that bought skinny jeans and leather jackets since and it's made the whole thing sound BORING which is the opposite of what I imagine this felt like at the time. The Oppenheimer of punk I guess? I am become Kings of Leon, destroyer of good music. Crying shame. It's clearly great but I've came at it through 50 years of boring imitators.
decent
Gave an extra star out of respect for Iggy, but I can’t listen to a whole album of this music since I stopped being an angry teen
Lite sådär. Bra produktion men inte så intressant.
Very raw proto punk. Not high on sophistication and has a brutal production. Its not for me but you have to admire the gusto.
A decent if somewhat rambling hard rock LP. Would've liked most of the tracks to be a bit more concise in execution, but they at least have enough energy to make their minimal ideas pop.
A little to Raw for me from time to time, but overall quite enjoyable.
Too raw
Classic rock! Or I guess more punk than rock but it felt very rock at the same time. A good friday album to listen to while working. Despite enjoying this album, when it comes to stooges, I prefer mine in pairs of 3.
This is the second or third album that I've gotten of The Stooges. I strongly disliked the other albums but this one has some promise and I enjoyed it way more than the others.
Search & Destroy is amazing, the rest is fine.
It is a punk rock album. I do not care for the screaming. The music itself is alright. Lyrics are meh. It was 37 minutes long which is good. I do not have a desire to relisten to this album again. It is better than a 2 but not really a 3. I will round up but it is a close call.
Pretty much what you'd expect from a punk album
Liked this one a lot more than the solo album I had last week. Fun energetic early punk rock
The album you get when you triple distill testosterone. It's attitudinous, loud, and unapologetic. Iggy the man
This album kind of felt like it went in one ear and out the other. I'm sure it was really impressive at the time, considering it was 1973. But, for me, it doesn't really make an impression, except for some of the vocals and guitar. My favourite song was I Need Somebody.
Great garbage band sound, very similar sounding songs tho. Raw power got me moving
Super rockin album. Reminds me of the sex pistols a bit with the guitar work although iggy sounds a million times different than Johnny rotten. Good vibes on this record. I definitely wouldn't say these songs are great but not bad at all. Decent 5/10
Decent punk album. Starts out strong but falters near the end.
Good rock album, guitar shreds, oozes sex and drugs
Hauska tykitys. Iggy ihan syystäkin hehkutettu, mut pitäis varmaan livenä nähdä, et sais sen 4-5/5 kokemuksen
The songs are good, but the recording/mix is very muddy. Heard 1 version of the David Bowie mix which I preferred a lot more
Good energy. Sometimes a bit too fuzzy
I will not deny that the guitar on this album is obviously very ahead of it's time, but save for that, I don't really get the specialty. I think the album cover is more iconic than the music inside of it. Again though, guitar is great, and is really carrying this score itself.
Alas, this does not stir my soul.
Nota fa of his early work.
Punk. Was interesting to hear the roots of punk
Not up my alley for punk but it’s solid.
This is so punk rock, was surprised to see it's from the 70s
Old school punk. Sound is janky, even for punk.
I loved the guitar work and the fact that this is punk rock in 1973 before the genre officially had its name, but the raw production of the time made it hard to enjoy.
Interesting to hear the early stages of punk, not as aggressive as punk became a few years later but certainly a departure of the rock that was prevalent in 73. The album was decent, good runtime, surprisingly preferred the faster songs over the slower ones at the end of the album
Top 3 Songs: 1 - Gimme Danger (2) 2 - Raw Power (5) 3 - I Need Somebody (6)
Not melodious Too noisy
I saw in the Wikipedia blurb that this had an impact on a bunch of other artists and I can definitely tell because it sounds like it would have influenced almost every major rock movement from 1975-1995. From punk to grunge this album has notes of all of it. I feel like I’ve been harsh on punk so far but this proto punk is actually pretty good
Iggy Pop in top form. The essense of garage rock. For sure. Only due to the poor recording I have always wondered why so many people are referring to this one as the best one by Iggy. Personally I hav always found it a bit disapointing compared to the first 2 Stooges albums. Anyhow classic tunes are on it that since then have never failed to get the crowd going crazy when played live
Listened to on 8/10/22 3.5/5 Favorite song: Search and Destroy Great head banging 70s rock energy but nothing super memorable
Raw power indeed
aight iggy
It's a little lightweight compared to their previous classics but still rocks like an MF.
Short album, but enjoyable. Liked the lyricalness of “Gimme Danger” contrasted with the rest of the album.
ok wow i'm still shifting my mental model but i'm feeling there are multiple punk, uh, lineages(?) the clash, sex pistols, the smiths.. those are punk sure but they don't feel punk to me. throw the ramones in there too? stooges led by iggy pop? this feels in the lineage of punk that leads to the pixies, nirvana, mxpx, five iron frenzy, less than jake, good riddance, nofx but iggy pop will always be a problematic listen because with stardom came statutory rape of young teens
Meh
I only know that Iggy Pop is a musician; I don’t think I’ve listened to a single Stooges song that I can remember. I had no expectations coming in, aside from that I tend to like proto-punk. It feels more like punk than I was expecting, especially lyrically. The music isn’t as harsh or fast on a whole as punk tends to be, which I feel clashes a little with the sometime incomprehensibility of the lyrics. It’s very interesting to see the evolution of one of the genres I like a lot. Fav Track: I Need Somebody 3/5
Not a full album of greatness
A nice album all around. Though I am not familiar with much of their work aside, this is an excellent hard rock punk album. Once again I will be giving The Stooges more of a listen.
Very kick-ass, classic punk.
This is the "less" punk of the Stooges albuns that I've listened to on this list. I miss the crazy Saxophone from "The Fun House." Altough this is already a preview of Iggy's solo career that I tend to like, I must classify it as a good album, but not excellent. "Search & destroy" is the best song, but the rest of the album is good.
There are songs that stood out to me, but ultimately I just didn't really click with it. The Stooges mix is what I listened to so will have to try the Bowie mix too.
Dope protopunk 3
Much better than their self-titled. Still meh 3
fine but cool
Raw and punchy first half, snoozing on the back.
Does exactly what it says on the tin
This album caught me on a good day & I really it.
Highlights: Search and Destroy Gimme Danger I Need Somebody 3,5 / 5
Overall good album. Iggy never quite did it for me, but I can appreciate the songs.
Too harsh for me
A bit boring honestly. Just loads of the same track after track.
I like some bits but overall not quite what I'm after
Not too bad for music from that era
Favorites: Your Pretty Face is Going to Hell Raw Power
This album is wild. Just so much energy here. It's loud, it's unapologetic, and it's kind of a mess. It feels like a live album. Maybe it is. Maybe it's not, but it doesn't sound polished. Driving guitars all over the place, and Iggy Pop's vocals are turned up to 11. I'm not sure how re-listenable this is for me. I am glad I heard it, I've heard Iggy Pop songs that I like and those I don't, and this album has both. Not bad, not great, so a perfect 3.0 stars.
OK but i didnt like the dirty sound to all the tracks.
Definitely early alternative? Kind of reminded me of the clash or cure? Not bad, but I am not sure I would listen again.
About two-thirds of a fantastic record, but I suppose the fact that it was made at all is something. Another record where the track listing has always struck me as a bit off; Iggy's mix (at least in its more reasonable vinyl mastering) might be an improvement on the original in terms of consistency of sound.
very short good
mais um rock classico aprovado
100% cool.
A haiku: Raw Power is loud, Can be fun, or a bit much, Overall not bad. 6/10
Not really what I was expecting, but gimme danger seems to be a nice track to hit on the road.
Raw 2.9
Better than expected
This is alright, nothing amazing. I liked the other Stooges album (self-titled) I listened to on this list.
It was OK
Similar thoughts as the other Stooges albums we've listened to... probably much better to have seen them perform live, and being less sober. 2.5
Ágætis rokk og ról
Fast and straight to the point, I like this Iggy better I think
Decent protopunk fare from Iggy and the lads, spanning 60s influences with more forward-thinking elements
Very hit and miss.
Pretty good, doesn't really go anywhere though
I enjoyed this more than I thought I would!
decent punk rock album
Didn't do much for me, sorry.
Great songs, attitude and charima sabotaged by its production. Its quite annoying when I'm turning up the music (which is fantastic), Iggy's loud vocals appear out of nowhere and it has to be turned down again. Can't fault it too much as apart from it's production, this album certainly is an enjoyable case of Raw Power
Enjoyed it - not an album i'm going to listen to loads. Think I enjoy iggy's solo stuff more
This is good punk rock, uh, music.
Kurt Cobain's favorite album of all time. It's the seminal garage rock band The Stooges made at it again for the third banger of an album. It's important to know there are two mixes of the album to listen to: the '73 Bowie mix, and the '97 original Iggy mix (released as Rouge Power and linked by this website). Where the Bowie mix is more accessible and well-polished, it muffles the instruments and Iggy's grunts. A lot of people prefer the nicer Bowie mix over what they consider to be a busy mess. Yet others, myself included, prefer the raw, angry original. Personally, I found this to be the weakest of their three albums. It doesn't have the charm and catchiness of their first album, nor the degradation from pop to jazz madness that defined their second album. What does define this album? Well, first of all, even though I prefer the Iggy mix, I think both are bad production efforts. The Bowie mix feels dull compared to the other. Yet the Iggy mix is too busy. And just hear all the production mistakes on the first song in both mixes... how is this the album's most played song on Spotify? Oh yeah, it was the lead single. I like the second half of "Gimme Danger," everything from the vocals to the guitar trying to pull of its own thing, and the crazy bass taking control. I like the contrast of the celesta in "Penetration." Iggy's grunts and vocal sounds tend to be my favorite part of these songs. My favorite song is "I Need Somebody." Not sure if it's because it sounds like "The Passenger" or what. But one thing's for sure, this song and "Gimme Danger" are the two ballads... so maybe I just don't like their punk as much as I thought I did? Now, I admit the songs in themselves are really good. There's all sorts of influences of rockabilly ("Raw Power"), blues ("I need somebody"), and proto-punk all over. There's a lot of diversity here it's impossible not to like anything from every song. But someone seriously needs to run this into a better production attempt, more like the Iggy mix, but fixing up the bad sound when it gets too loud. Both "Search and Destroy" and "Your Pretty Face..." are in desperate need of better mixes. It does hold up to the album's title, being such a raw album but with excellent instrumental work and powerful vocal delivery. But overall, Raw Power did not stick out as much to me as their other two albums did.
pretty cool
Actual rating 3.5
Tricky, while I recognise how influential and ahead of it’s time this is, I also found it pretty unpleasant to listen to.
The first time through I found this a little “raw” for my tastes, but on second listen it seems like I may have been overly influenced by the songs “Your Pretty Face is Going to Hell” and “Death Trip”. In looking for the missing link between rock n’ roll and punk, I would put the Stooges at the top of the list. I like the guitar and Iggy’s voice seems to change with every song, like his vocal chords were damaged from the previous recording. Raw Rower lives up to its name.
Pretty good album. The punky style is not what I would listen to every day, but occasionally fits my mood. This one sits at a solid 3 stars for me.
Scuzzy, glam rock n roll. Not bad, I can hear Bowie and I can hear Joy Division, so quite influential.
First time listening to them. Could hear how iggy was an early influence in the pop punk genre. To me these songs didn’t really resonate. Maybe it was just before my time to understand. Pretty neutral here. 5.8/10
This must have sounded pretty wild after 10 years of listening to The Byrds. Attitude, swagger, nutso energy; invigorating as a cold jet of water straight up your swanny.
Fuzzy distorted proto-punk with some surf elements. I can see the influence it had on later punk.
Straight up Punk. Love this album cover. Standout Tracks: Your Pretty Face Is Going To Hell, Penetration, Raw Power
Punk - in this case proto-punk - is not really my thing, but this album has a couple of tracks I can relate to (Search & Destroy, I need Somebody). That said, I recognize the power and attractiveness of the raw sound. Live they must have been a powerhouse.
6.5
This album is not something I would exactly listen to but there are some songs that I do enjoy. The energy of the album is electric and that is my biggest takeaway from it. Highlighted songs: Penetration, I Need Somebody
Liked it. Urban and upbeat. Correct title.
Great attitude and some great tracks. I don't like the production though - it's just a bit weak for me.
Was okay
Pretty alright. I enjoyed some of it.
Fun but no replay value
Title cut killed it, opening track also really good.
The beginning of the album was great, but towards the end the songs felt as if they were dragging on.
More background music, but not bad
12th July 2021 Listened on the way in to Covent Garden having missed listening yesterday. On my last day of working in the GCF! Still raw with energy, iggy is a legend.
Nota:5/10
The voices are reminiscent of something. Classic rock parodies maybe. The solis were sick.
