Raw Power

It's a problem. This album was clearly revolutionary and (with the Monks) one of those proto punk albums that was revolutionary at the time. The problem is it's been recycled by every scuzz rock yawn fest that bought skinny jeans and leather jackets since and it's made the whole thing sound BORING which is the opposite of what I imagine this felt like at the time. The Oppenheimer of punk I guess? I am become Kings of Leon, destroyer of good music. Crying shame. It's clearly great but I've came at it through 50 years of boring imitators.

Very raw proto punk. Not high on sophistication and has a brutal production. Its not for me but you have to admire the gusto.

A decent if somewhat rambling hard rock LP. Would've liked most of the tracks to be a bit more concise in execution, but they at least have enough energy to make their minimal ideas pop.

A little to Raw for me from time to time, but overall quite enjoyable.

Too raw

Classic rock! Or I guess more punk than rock but it felt very rock at the same time. A good friday album to listen to while working. Despite enjoying this album, when it comes to stooges, I prefer mine in pairs of 3.

This is the second or third album that I've gotten of The Stooges. I strongly disliked the other albums but this one has some promise and I enjoyed it way more than the others.

Search & Destroy is amazing, the rest is fine.

It is a punk rock album. I do not care for the screaming. The music itself is alright. Lyrics are meh. It was 37 minutes long which is good. I do not have a desire to relisten to this album again. It is better than a 2 but not really a 3. I will round up but it is a close call.

This album kind of felt like it went in one ear and out the other. I'm sure it was really impressive at the time, considering it was 1973. But, for me, it doesn't really make an impression, except for some of the vocals and guitar. My favourite song was I Need Somebody.

Super rockin album. Reminds me of the sex pistols a bit with the guitar work although iggy sounds a million times different than Johnny rotten. Good vibes on this record. I definitely wouldn't say these songs are great but not bad at all. Decent 5/10

I will not deny that the guitar on this album is obviously very ahead of it's time, but save for that, I don't really get the specialty. I think the album cover is more iconic than the music inside of it. Again though, guitar is great, and is really carrying this score itself.

I loved the guitar work and the fact that this is punk rock in 1973 before the genre officially had its name, but the raw production of the time made it hard to enjoy.

Interesting to hear the early stages of punk, not as aggressive as punk became a few years later but certainly a departure of the rock that was prevalent in 73. The album was decent, good runtime, surprisingly preferred the faster songs over the slower ones at the end of the album

I saw in the Wikipedia blurb that this had an impact on a bunch of other artists and I can definitely tell because it sounds like it would have influenced almost every major rock movement from 1975-1995. From punk to grunge this album has notes of all of it. I feel like I’ve been harsh on punk so far but this proto punk is actually pretty good

Iggy Pop in top form. The essense of garage rock. For sure. Only due to the poor recording I have always wondered why so many people are referring to this one as the best one by Iggy. Personally I hav always found it a bit disapointing compared to the first 2 Stooges albums. Anyhow classic tunes are on it that since then have never failed to get the crowd going crazy when played live

It's a little lightweight compared to their previous classics but still rocks like an MF.

Short album, but enjoyable. Liked the lyricalness of “Gimme Danger” contrasted with the rest of the album.

ok wow i'm still shifting my mental model but i'm feeling there are multiple punk, uh, lineages(?) the clash, sex pistols, the smiths.. those are punk sure but they don't feel punk to me. throw the ramones in there too? stooges led by iggy pop? this feels in the lineage of punk that leads to the pixies, nirvana, mxpx, five iron frenzy, less than jake, good riddance, nofx but iggy pop will always be a problematic listen because with stardom came statutory rape of young teens

I only know that Iggy Pop is a musician; I don’t think I’ve listened to a single Stooges song that I can remember. I had no expectations coming in, aside from that I tend to like proto-punk. It feels more like punk than I was expecting, especially lyrically. The music isn’t as harsh or fast on a whole as punk tends to be, which I feel clashes a little with the sometime incomprehensibility of the lyrics. It’s very interesting to see the evolution of one of the genres I like a lot. Fav Track: I Need Somebody 3/5

Not a full album of greatness

A nice album all around. Though I am not familiar with much of their work aside, this is an excellent hard rock punk album. Once again I will be giving The Stooges more of a listen.

Very kick-ass, classic punk.

This is the "less" punk of the Stooges albuns that I've listened to on this list. I miss the crazy Saxophone from "The Fun House." Altough this is already a preview of Iggy's solo career that I tend to like, I must classify it as a good album, but not excellent. "Search & destroy" is the best song, but the rest of the album is good.

There are songs that stood out to me, but ultimately I just didn't really click with it. The Stooges mix is what I listened to so will have to try the Bowie mix too.

Un album intéressant qui met en scène les membres des Stooges en pleine réflexion au sujet d'un prochain déplacement en avion que doit effectuer le groupe. Le point qui pose problème est le prix des billets qui n'entre pas dans leur budget. Ils doivent alors trouver une solution pour prendre cet avion tout en payant un nombre de billets inférieur au nombre de membres. Ils ont soudain une idée. Arrivés à l'aéroport, les Stooges se présentent au portique de détection avec leurs valises. De manière surprenante, Iggy Pop ne fait pas partie de la troupe. Chacun pose donc sa valise et ses effets personnels sur le tapis roulant. Le premier membre passe le contrôle sans problème, idem pour le deuxième, le troisième, etc... Soudain, au moment de scanner le bagage cabine du dernier, l'agent de sécurité est stupéfait : « Ça par exemple ! Viens voir ça ! » lance-t-il à son collègue. Celui-ci s'approche et n'en croit pas ses yeux. Coincé entre un pyjama et un sèche-cheveux, Iggy Pop est contorsionné dans une poche latérale et regarde fixement l'objectif. Les Stooges seront finalement raccompagnés à la sortie de l'aéroport et devront annuler leur concert.

Iggy Pop nous propose ici une nouvelle performance artistique de haute volée. En effet, non content de nous avori déjà ébloui avec la désormais célèbre apparition de Woodstock, Iggy revient ici encore plus fort. L'album commence par quelques apparitions assez classiques, Iggy sortant succèssivement d'un demi-cercueil puis d'une boite en plastique. Mais dès la deuxième piste, Iggy va sortir le grand jeu. Le titre de la piste laissait entrevoir de ce qu'il allait se passer: "Alternate "Violent" Iggy Mix". On lance la piste rempli d'adrénaline, et là l'irréel se produit. Une boite a outils remplie de cutters, scies et autres objets contendants est ramenée sur scène. Il n'y a evidemment aucune place pour un corps humain dans cette boite à outils, sans peine de se retrouver rapidement sectionné par l'un des instruments. Mais Iggy commence alors à se tordre, faisant fi de la peur génèrale, et viendra s'immiscer entre les différents objets à dents de la boite à outils. Une fois cette dernière refermée, Iggy parviendra à s'en extraire dans un héroique coup de hanche, avant de se présenter, indemne, devant nos yeux ébahis. De très loin la performance la plus technique des Stooges.

This album is wild. Just so much energy here. It's loud, it's unapologetic, and it's kind of a mess. It feels like a live album. Maybe it is. Maybe it's not, but it doesn't sound polished. Driving guitars all over the place, and Iggy Pop's vocals are turned up to 11. I'm not sure how re-listenable this is for me. I am glad I heard it, I've heard Iggy Pop songs that I like and those I don't, and this album has both. Not bad, not great, so a perfect 3.0 stars.

About two-thirds of a fantastic record, but I suppose the fact that it was made at all is something. Another record where the track listing has always struck me as a bit off; Iggy's mix (at least in its more reasonable vinyl mastering) might be an improvement on the original in terms of consistency of sound.

Great songs, attitude and charima sabotaged by its production. Its quite annoying when I'm turning up the music (which is fantastic), Iggy's loud vocals appear out of nowhere and it has to be turned down again. Can't fault it too much as apart from it's production, this album certainly is an enjoyable case of Raw Power

This is good punk rock, uh, music.

Kurt Cobain's favorite album of all time. It's the seminal garage rock band The Stooges made at it again for the third banger of an album. It's important to know there are two mixes of the album to listen to: the '73 Bowie mix, and the '97 original Iggy mix (released as Rouge Power and linked by this website). Where the Bowie mix is more accessible and well-polished, it muffles the instruments and Iggy's grunts. A lot of people prefer the nicer Bowie mix over what they consider to be a busy mess. Yet others, myself included, prefer the raw, angry original. Personally, I found this to be the weakest of their three albums. It doesn't have the charm and catchiness of their first album, nor the degradation from pop to jazz madness that defined their second album. What does define this album? Well, first of all, even though I prefer the Iggy mix, I think both are bad production efforts. The Bowie mix feels dull compared to the other. Yet the Iggy mix is too busy. And just hear all the production mistakes on the first song in both mixes... how is this the album's most played song on Spotify? Oh yeah, it was the lead single. I like the second half of "Gimme Danger," everything from the vocals to the guitar trying to pull of its own thing, and the crazy bass taking control. I like the contrast of the celesta in "Penetration." Iggy's grunts and vocal sounds tend to be my favorite part of these songs. My favorite song is "I Need Somebody." Not sure if it's because it sounds like "The Passenger" or what. But one thing's for sure, this song and "Gimme Danger" are the two ballads... so maybe I just don't like their punk as much as I thought I did? Now, I admit the songs in themselves are really good. There's all sorts of influences of rockabilly ("Raw Power"), blues ("I need somebody"), and proto-punk all over. There's a lot of diversity here it's impossible not to like anything from every song. But someone seriously needs to run this into a better production attempt, more like the Iggy mix, but fixing up the bad sound when it gets too loud. Both "Search and Destroy" and "Your Pretty Face..." are in desperate need of better mixes. It does hold up to the album's title, being such a raw album but with excellent instrumental work and powerful vocal delivery. But overall, Raw Power did not stick out as much to me as their other two albums did.

Tricky, while I recognise how influential and ahead of it’s time this is, I also found it pretty unpleasant to listen to.

The first time through I found this a little “raw” for my tastes, but on second listen it seems like I may have been overly influenced by the songs “Your Pretty Face is Going to Hell” and “Death Trip”. In looking for the missing link between rock n’ roll and punk, I would put the Stooges at the top of the list. I like the guitar and Iggy’s voice seems to change with every song, like his vocal chords were damaged from the previous recording. Raw Rower lives up to its name.

Pretty good album. The punky style is not what I would listen to every day, but occasionally fits my mood. This one sits at a solid 3 stars for me.

Scuzzy, glam rock n roll. Not bad, I can hear Bowie and I can hear Joy Division, so quite influential.

First time listening to them. Could hear how iggy was an early influence in the pop punk genre. To me these songs didn’t really resonate. Maybe it was just before my time to understand. Pretty neutral here. 5.8/10

This must have sounded pretty wild after 10 years of listening to The Byrds. Attitude, swagger, nutso energy; invigorating as a cold jet of water straight up your swanny.

Punk - in this case proto-punk - is not really my thing, but this album has a couple of tracks I can relate to (Search & Destroy, I need Somebody). That said, I recognize the power and attractiveness of the raw sound. Live they must have been a powerhouse.

Aquest disc és una patada al cervell, quina potència, quina textura més crua i esbojarrada. M'ha agradat molt, era el primer cop que l'escoltava i m'ha sorprés. El més destacable és la seva potència, i pel que he llegit és un dels àlbums que es van avançar al punk, i van ser-ne una de les seves bases fundacionals. Molt bon dics, potser li falta algun tema més destacable però el conjunt en general és molt notable.

Lives up to the title. Filled to the brim with grainy/tinny whining guitar licks & energy flowing from Iggy with every scream. The production seems intentionally rough. Title track is cleaner and catchy. The final song, Death Trip is a wild, chaotic & loud ride

Something that I just don't understand. It's raw and full of truth just not enjoyable to me.

I think my biggest problem with this group is Iggy Pop, which I "get" is the reason why they did so well. He just comes off as a bad cover band sounding singer. I've heard better singers and covers at my local bar on Monday nights. The music is solid for the most part, and there's a lot of proto-punk, glam, metal feels that I'm sure have influenced a ton of bands. So musically, I like The Stooges, I just don't like Iggy Pop. There we go. 2.38 / 5 stars

i got Fun House a while ago and gave it 1 star. i'm about 300 albums in and i've only given seven or eight 1 star reviews, so that's an indication of how much i HATED Fun House. i don't care guys, it sucked ok. so when i got this today my heart sank and when i learned there are two mixes and it's not clear which mix is the definitive one my heart sank even further because i thought it's only fair to give both a go................ anyway this is better than Fun House. i didn't want to rip my own ears off my head. there's a xylophone or something in Penetration (lmao what a sentence). that was my favourite part of the album. by the end of it though i was Stooged Out and i decided not to listen to the Bowie mix because i remembered i have free will and life is too short. ok bye.

The instrumentals are great, lyrics are fine, nothing revolutionary, but I despise the main vocalist's voice. The album is definitely innovative for its time I just can't get over the strange vocal style. Not a pleasure to listen to.

For most of this album I was hating it and thinking "put a shirt on, you disgust me." With all the weird noises he was making "ngyah, ngyah, ngyah". The last few songs were a bit better though. At least it was a short album.

This album oozes testosterone and honestly, I’m not into it.

The mixing sucks and the drums sound like shit, also not a fan of the vocalist. Basically it's some of the most ordinary dadrock especially with the guitars that kind of randomly decide it's time for a lick or solo that doesn't really fit with the rest of the songs.

There was nothing special about this album to me at all. It was all a bit boring, with nothing interesting me in any of it. It was all kind of just noise to me, and unless I was concentrating to my highest level, all of the songs would just sort of mush together with nothing memorable in between. I wasn't a fan of this; however, it wasn't the most horrendous thing I've ever listened to. There were no real standouts to me...

A Classic - I've never listened to Iggy Pop prior to this album; I can hear and feel the early brit rock style in this project. A lot of the tone and vibes of this project reminded me of the background music of a tony hawk or skate game Best song - Death Trip

Didn't really connect with this one. Very loud, agressive, unpolished. Foundational proto punk album but not one I see myself revisiting in the future.

In a decade absolutely bursting with perv rockers, Iggy might have been the king. You can practically taste his weird goop all over this record. I get why this was a big deal at the time, but listening with a modern ear there's not really anything that makes this album stand out beyond Iggy's lecherous vocal fry. It's a 2.5 from me.

tossed up on which mix to listen to- listened to search and destroy once with the 2023 iggy mix, once with the 2023 bowie mix, then again with the iggy mix and stuck with that one. guitar loses a bit of the edge but i do like the loud bass. its nice in my ears. i should read about the loudness wars classic rock album. nothing for me to write home about honestly, this kind of rock isnt really my style alas i need somebody is nice. i would love to learn how this kind of slow rock is done because i tried composing some recently and it was hard!!!! highlights: penetration (crazy vocals!!)

The Iggy mixes are better than the Bowie mixes but the songs are still mediocre. Billy Idol owes a lot to Iggy for the trail he blazed.

Meh! I am not as into this as I would think I should be.

This is a meh for me. I know my ratings are trending harsher, but I'm simply uninterested in this much guitar! Disclaimer: I listened to the 2023 remaster, which I guess is a different mix than the original (which I could not easily find). So, maybe my rating has an asterisk (but I kinda doubt it).

I've heard worse but my ears are still bleeding a little. If I have to listen to this whole thing it will be a bit torturous

Ganz gut, wenn auch matschig und auf geistlose Weise monoton

Two diff versions of this record - I mostly listened to the Bowie mixes but comparing a few songs from the Iggy version was interesting. The whole thing is mostly not my jam though.

Found this one tough to get through. Listened to the Iggy mix. It’s just not for me this early punk stuff. Like learn to play guitar and sing you degenerates?

The first Stooges album of three in this collection (first for me, last chronologically of the collection), and I must admit I'm a little disappointed that we got more Stooges and less solo Iggy Pop, if this album is much like the previous two Stooges productions. "Search and destroy" is an interesting choice to start off the album, as it set me up to expect that the album would be kind of a harsh proto-punk sound, but other tracks are mildly more entertaining--"Gimme danger" has an almost Doors-like sound (assuming the Doors chose to record in a wind tunnel from far away), and "Penetration" is another promising direction. Unfortunately, despite Bowie's efforts to recover from Pop's apparently abysmal mix, the production quality is really mediocre (even with the 2023 remastered version), so much so that it distracts from the music, such as it is, and I'll admit I would never have guessed that Iggy Pop was singing the songs (except for "I need somebody" and bits of "Death trip", he sounds a lot more like Darby Clash from the very recent Germs album, which isn't a good thing). I'd be inclined to give them the benefit of the doubt and an extra star (and respect the apparently unanimous critical love of what this album represented) if there weren't two more Stooges albums ahead of me (and one Germs immediately behind), so two it is. Sorry, Stooges!

Best Track - "Gimme Danger"

Went for the Bowie Mix, opinion seems strongly divided which is better so went for the OG. Raw Power is certainly apt. I know Search and Destroy quite well but hadn't heard any of the others. Didn't do much for me unfortunately. If you want rawer power "I Wanna Be Your Dog" is a crazy sound for 1969

I really thought I'd like this one more than I did. I think I might have to come back to it some other time and re-evaluate how I feel about it but yesterday it was not hitting.

I've never really "got" Iggy - the lyrics are great but just not a fan of the sound. I think I'm missing the context that this music was likely novel when it landed.

Fun listen, i really enjoyed the instrumentation on this album, the voacls though... they were very interesting. dont think ill ever revist since its not really my cup of tea. favorite(s): search and destroy least favorite: your pretty face is going to hell

Oh good another rock album from the 70s, such diverse music choices

Really like the bass in the mix. Talented player there. The general instrumentation is good, minus a few widdly wah parts. One too many widdly wahs. Lower overall sound quality but it fits that early punk tone. The vocals—way too over the top for my taste. Rock and roll clown vibes. But he does kinda have a Morrison vibe on a couple of the songs. The drunk shouty thing. AAHYEEEAaaaaaahhh. 2.0/5.0

There really isn’t anything about this album that I enjoyed.

Not as jarringly bad as I thought it would be. Wouldn't rush to listen again though.

I definitely have not listened to this album. As much as I want to enjoy it (due to his connection with David Bowie), I just don’t have a connection to Iggy Pop or early punk. I’m glad to have listened to it once. I probably won’t reach for it again.

Punk rock and stuff

Feels like unlistenable noise at some points. You are better off listening to their self-titled album.

I get this was instrumental in defining a new genre and musical direction, but I just can’t get there. Not for me. The production is also super weak, and doesn’t live up to the ‘Raw Power’ title at all. No low end to be heard.

I wish steve albini could be revived and go back in time to produce this album. The awful production (on both versions) ruins what could be a decent experience. A major standout is penetration, which could genuinely be a throbbing gristle song. Most of the others though were quite miserable.

Not a huge fan of Iggy's presence on these tracks and the mixing is extremely intense which you have to be in the mood for (in fairness I listened to the Iggy version which I hear may not be the best move necessarily, I may revisit)

I'm not big on rock of any sort; i have childhood songs that i adore, but new ones have never appealed to me indeed. Still, i heard it all and I can say some solos were very much to my liking, but they aren't worth sitting through the whole song for me specifically-

I get that it's supposed to sound noisy and terribly mixed, but I still don't like it. I still don't like punk. Can I still appreciate what this album contributed to the rise of punk music despite this? Of course.

*1973 *Two Stooges albums in 2 days is too much, so it took me a month to listen to this... *Short album - 35 minutes. *Just not my vibe. It's not bad, just not into it. RATING - 5.5/10

I don't really have much to say about this album. I didn't really like it other than the song Gimme Danger. A lot of the other songs just sounded like the same song over and over again.

Probably a controversial opinion, but I think this album is just mindless 70s rock. Poor production, even the Bowie cut, and lyrics that get pretty degenerate and unintelligible at times. Penetration probably knocked this down a whole star for me. I can see the influence, but it's not for me. More junk for the bucket.

Guitars sound thick and dirty which I like, but I find Iggy gets lost over the top.

Man, this sounds like shit in both mixes. I gave Fun House 5 stars but didn't really enjoy this. It sounds too far towards standard rock or Bowie's glam rock to be anywhere near as fierce as the previous album. And it sounds awful. Did they record it on a dictaphone?

Making his fourth apperance on this list in 600 albums, it's Iggy Pop. This, for me, has crossed into overrepresentation. These guys are good, I like them, but MAKE SOME ROOM, oh my God, please, give me some albums which are new and fresh and interesting. This is fine but it's not amazing, and I've basically heard it before.

Every song sounds the same. I enjoy the sound. But it gets a little old after a while. Understand Iggy’s place in history. Album likely deserves to be on the list. But still not an all time great album. 2.5

More metally / hard rock, less punk than I was expecting, though the generator is teaching me that those lines were very porous in the 70s. I can’t say I really enjoyed most of these songs, though.

1/3. Most of this just didn't really grab me, pretty muddy-sounding production, and just not really my vibe. Raw Power and Shake Appeal were my favorite tracks, solid riffs on both, but the rest just passed me by. I do like the unadulterated hedonism and rock and roll spirit of the lyrics though.

Never had much exposure to Iggy Pop's music but I can understand how he made a name for himself in the rock scene. Unfortunately, none of the songs on this particular album really piqued my interest.

This album really doesn't do anything special for me. A new guitarist at the time and has a few good riffs and solos. Can see how this album could be influential to those in the punk scene. The music just doesn't speak to me.

Search and Destroy rules. I haven’t really listened to the stooges much. But the sound is pretty good, gritty. Everything else on the album kind of sounds like a worse version of Search and Destroy. Some songs are fun and I know this sound is pretty formative for bands that came after, but It’s not blowing me away.

This just sounds so ... thin? I'm aware there's a different mix by Iggy which is supposedly louder, but I was suitably unimpressed by the original version I have no interest in trying it again (at least at the moment).
