Reviews (page 7 of 10)

Entertaining enough to give it a 3

I thoroughly enjoyed this but wouldn’t just put it on, but if it was on I would he nodding my head in approval

3.5 I read a review from someone before listening who claimed that this album is the kind of thing you have to be on E to enjoy. So, I was expecting rave music, and while it’s certainly danceable at times, for the most part, this really isn’t that - it’s more chill electronic music, much like that DJ Shadow album we had. Also much like that DJ Shadow album we had, this thing consists entirely of samples, allegedly over 3500 according to one of the guys who created it, none of which I recognized (though I swear one of the sound effects here sounded just like something from Animal Crossing). While I have a hard time believing that this really has quite that many, I have learned to develop a bit of an appreciation for sample-based music after having listened to the aforementioned DJ Shadow album (Endtroducing.....) and Beastie Boys’ Paul’s Boutique. I feel like creating new music by combining elements from existing music and various other audio formats is an interesting niche that takes a certain kind of creative mind to pull off as compared to writing something from scratch. So, that to say, I struggled with my rating a bit on this one. At first, I didn’t think this album did the whole samping thing nearly as interestingly as the other two I mentioned did. But, I kept finding myself drawn to re-listen, and I eventually realized that it’s not trying to do what they had already. Rather than being a showcase of using samples in more conventional songwriting, this is more of an effort to create an operatic, concept-driven piece of art through sampling. The fact that each song segues directly into the next was something that I thought was really cool and helped prevent the album from getting too stale, even if a lot of the individual pieces weren’t overly remarkable - with the exception to that assertion obviously being the “Boys need therapy” song, Frontier Psychiatrist. It’s the single best track here and the one moment I found myself looking forward to the most on re-listens - good work there, guys, that’s a great piece of electronic music. So, while I still don’t think that this is the kind of thing I’ll likely be putting on again in the near future, I do think that what this album does is cool and will definitely get a replay from me at some point. Also has me curious to check out more sample-based music!

Since I Left You Frontier Psychiatrist

Pretty interesting messed with a couple songs

Ok, not really my music though. Was an ok listen

I've been really conflicted on electronica throughout this list. I always think there are some very interesting ideas going on, but then I always think they take those ideas and beat them into the ground, and then do it again, and again, and again. This is one of the better electronica albums on the list, and I liked Since I Left You a lot.

Good background music

I really liked this album for not knowing what I was getting myself into.

So it turns out that, for years, I’ve been singing the wrong words. Since I left you is a very different message to ‘since I met you’. It’s a whole new slant. Whoops! Maybe this girl needs therapy. Two great songs on here. The rest is unmemorable but it was fun to listen to.

It works as a bunch of tracks of samples to be sampled. It doesn’t work as something to listen to all the way through in one sitting!

Hmmm. This was interesting. Sort of dance, sort of Dub-Step, sort of DJ mixes. It was all over the place. Interesting to listen to but not remarkable.

Cool use of sampling, found it a bit repetitive after a while but not a bad listen

I liked the flow!

Here's another group I knew nothing about going in. I typically listen to these albums first thing in the morning while I'm working. This one was a perfect background music for an early Saturday morning work session. I was pleasantly surprised how much I like it. I loved how each track flowed into the next. Definitely worthy of another listen.

1. not feeling it

Nice sound

I did like their use of samples, but their overall sounds isn’t something I would usually seek out. Still enjoyable!

Really interesting, sometimes a bit too much going on.

This is an interesting one. Definitely not what I expected. I couldn't say, that I really liked it, but on the other hand it was quite a ride hearing al these samples in a completely new context. It's not going to be my new favourite, but I found it entertaining to listen to. Only it was a bit too long.

Mal nett, mal anstrengend, aber insgesamt schon irgendwie interessant

What a weird mix of songs I loved and songs I came this close to skipping

Made Monday a lil more fun

A perfectly pleasant album, but nothing to excite me.

They have a great sound but they don't quite manage to keep it interesting for an entire album. Still an amazing group with some awesome bangers!

Wild electronic music. Crazy while high - very repetitive but in a good way.

It works best when it sounds like Daft Punk. The soul vibe is great, but it gets repetitive at times.

Lots and lots of fun. Great rhythm and beat. The audio tapestry style just makes it very interesting. There is some variable consistency across the album but when it's good it's very good.

To some degree I understand the uniqueness of this album to be on this list - what seems like cobbling together samples of music around some motifs to create a new, unique composition. While reasonably nice to listen to for the most part, this seems like something better enjoyed in an altered state of consciousness. Some of the motifs in songs I like but nothing iterates out to liking a complete song. A lot of this kind of melds together as some motifs carry into other songs, but the standout that kept my attention throughout the song was Flight Tonight.

Pretty solid house-style album, just not really my taste.

Not really impressed with the album.

Cool for certain settings but feels like get shit done music or fully concentrate. Nothing in between.

cool but forgettable

Impressive? Absolutely. Replay value? Little to none

Kinda cool

Kinda a slapper of an album

Music is kind of sick but no lyrics makes it hard to want to listen to the whole thing straight through

Dance, pop, sampledelia. Está bien.

Not my style of music, but a couple of songs got my attention, in particular, "Frontier Psychiatrist", as I had heard it somewhere before and it's quite catchy.

It’s unique … didn’t love it didn’t hate it

A bit DJ Shadow-y with more focus on samples and cuts than mixes. It’s sometimes groovy and sometimes mellow, and continuous. After a while I got bored of the aesthetic (unlike Shadow).

Haven't listened to too much Avalanches previously. I knew Frontier Psychiatrist off this one, which is a funky and fun song. Title track is pretty good too, but the rest was average IMO. Personal nitpick - Album as a whole suffers from my big issue with a lot of EDM: short loops repeated. I don't need to hear the same single lyric or short 1-2 second clip repeated 20 times in a row. It's repetitive and boring. Okay, off my soap-box now.

A good jam. There's some genius here. Bit of a struggle to sit down and listen to. Works better as background music.

Patchy

Good album, just not my style.

Chill and interesting and meditative

I liked this album. It wasn’t my typical style but I did enjoy the beats and samples from literally everywhere. That being said, I did think the music was too crowded and that there were too many things going on. I couldn’t really concentrate whilst listening.

Nice, “summertime BBQ” vibes.

Fun music, bit too cheerful for me, but does have nice voices, samples and rhythms. Still more to listen to live I think, 3*

Apple Music preferred

This wasn't awful. I liked how the whole album flowed together, but I definitely could not see myself listening to this again. Some of the samples definitely seem shoehorned in, but it was kind of cool to see so many come together like a puzzle. It just is not at all the kind of music I enjoy.

Never listened to this kind of stuff, and I found I liked it. Such an interesting mash-up of sounds. I'm not a convert, but I now appreciate it more than I did. I would even go so far as to call this music. I don't apply that to a lot of rap/techno stuff.

A ok album if you enjoy disco.

This is actually quite nice and really well made. I like the groove and the seamless flow between the tracks, However, for a fan of hard rock and punk, it becomes quite repetitive and boring after a while, as I’m not at a party nor doing drugs. Why such long??? Also, quite underwhelming end to the album

A mess of cool-sounding but meaningless repetitive vocal licks, coupled with basic synth/percussive rhythms. It’s actually really interesting, bordering on soundscape-esque during some moments, and the music isn’t so repetitive that it gets boring. And it sounds, well, cool. However, even though the music is sometimes catchy, it’s disorganised and nonsensical to the point of (often) going in one ear and out the other. Maybe I don’t understand The Avalanches’ true genius. Highlights: Since I Left You, Close To You, Live At Dominoes

Alternative/electronic from 2000. Enjoying off the bat. Decent backing vibes, not quite library worthy. A high 3.

I think nothing of it

I appreciate the fact that their spund is unique among electronic bands-soulful, funky with touches of electronic beats and bent notes. Pleasant enough but not a candidate for me for heavy rotation.

An interesting soundscape but not my thing. Too much sampling. I did enjoy Frontier Psychiatrist.

This passed me by at the time. It's clever and groovy but I'm getting a bit frustrated by lots of albums that feel vaguely trippy and just wash over me. Not bad though. A true 6 out of 10.

Pretty ground breaking but the sound got rather monotonous.

Interesting, but not one of my favorites

Fun ingenious sample heavy musical travelog.

Great songs for studying / working

Album flows really well but I really can't shake the feeling that it's just a background album. Like I wouldn't necessarily sit down to listen to it, but I would absolutely have it on in the background at a party/gathering and it would compliment that situation perfectly. It doesn't really have any stand-out highlights but also no boring parts. Sampling work is very impressive.

Honestly, this is some really cool stuff. But I would be lying if I said I even made it all the way through disc 1. Two and a half hours of this is a lot.

Dance, pop, sampledelia. Está bien.

album three since i left you: 4/5 stay another season: 3/5 radio: 3/5 two hearts in 3/4 time: 3/5 avalanche rock: 2/5 flight tonight: 4/5 close to you: 4/5 diners only: 2/5 a different feeling: 2.5/5 electricity: 3.5/5 tonight may have to last me all my life: 3/5 pablo’s cruise: 2/5 frontier psychiatrist: 5/5 etoh: 1.5/5 summer crane: 2/5 little journey: 3/5 live at dominoes: 4/5 extra kings: 3/5 favorite: frontier psychiatrist i liked this album, however towards the end it started to feel really long and boring. i think it would have been better if it were shorter tbh. i liked the sampling, it felt very fresh but on some songs it was a little too much. overall this album is great and id recommend it 👍

It’s mindless EDM, not too harsh or deviating in any particular direction so as to be an annoying, contrived mess. It actually blends some solid rhythm with interesting instrumentation and the bass and drums assemble some adequate hip swaying beats. This really isn’t anything more than background music to accompany a hangout sesh with the boys or the girls, similarly it is not a casual listening experience for anyone that has left this phase behind them. Perhaps a revisit one day.

There are a few possibilities: 1. This album has been sampled to death. 2. This album samples many hits. 3. I have unknowingly heard songs from this album on the radio, thus they all sound familiar. In any case, it sounds like the type of music that comes on the radio on Saturdays when we clean the house :)

So so. It's not completely of my taste, but on the other hand it's not a bad album

There's some gems on this album, which is one of the better albums of its genre. Worth a relisten. I'm both super high on the tracks I like and pretty meh on the rest of the album. Absolutely worth inclusion as an album to listen to.

At first I thought this album would be much more to my taste, since I love this style... But I end disappointing me.

Initial thoughts on the first song are very positive, love the vibe and the samples! Kind of busy with all the different samples, but still pleasant 2 songs in. Not LOVING it so far, but it's chill. Lots of repetitive samples, gets a little old. 6/33 songs in and I'm not sure it's worth finishing the album, but I will power through for the sake of listening to see if the experience changes. 10 songs in and the vibe changed a bit, little more chill, but still pretty repetitive. I like the song "Electricity." 21 songs in - Frontier Psychiatrist (Mario Caldato Jr's 85% Remix) is a good song, very catchy and fun. 26 songs in, not very enthused about the album as a whole. Riding it through to the end. Getting stranger at the end here. Overall I need to be in a very specific mood to listen to this kind of music. It is certainly not horrible, but wouldn't be my goto.

Reichlich experimentell, nur teilweise eingängig.

Not my taste.

Easy listening, not too exciting. I came away pretty neutral on this album. Hard to distinguish between the songs.

I like sampling in music, but when I read that this single album contains over 900 samples - that’s next level. It’s not my ‘go-to’ music but it’s very easy to listen to whilst chipping away at work. This album reminded me of a cross between moon-safari (Air) and play (Moby) but not quite as good as either of them. Another album that played 3 times because one track just merges into the other.

Cool. Liked the songs with samples and dj sounds the most

I have an unfortunate relationship with this album, as I've re-listened and tried to like it all the way through a bunch over the past few years. There are some bangers and really nice tracks on here (title track, Stay Another Season, Frontier Psychiatrist obv, ETOH, Electricity, some others that I've warmed up to recently) but there are so many more misses than hits and the misses are, dare I say it, annoying sometimes. Ahh, had to- to book a flight tonight, ahh, had to- to book a flight tonight, ahh over and over is a bit grating, and there are some loops in other songs that are just as unpleasant to me. It's super unfortunate because of how cool and dense the construction of the album is, but there are some songs that remind me of being stuck on a dance floor just waiting for the DJ to move on from the current song. 5.75/10

Not gonna lie I just don't get this album as much as I feel like I should. It's got some potential and cool grooves but at the end of the day the songs themselves aren't very good imo

Aside from a couple tracks, pretty forgettable. But it was a fun album, very chill.

Sounds like 2000.

Album 267 of 1001 The Avalanches - Since I Left You Rating : 3 / 5 Favorite Track : Frontier Psychiatrist Interesting album. Though I was getting into a more electronica album but it had more going on. Some fun tracks. Couple of them good for the 'Liked' list.

Great album, recognised a couple of songs, great example of modern sampling and probably influenced a lot of hip hop that followed, just got a little repetitive so not one I’ll add to my rotation, but an album you should listen to.

Obviously a well crafted album. Little too electronic for my usual tastes, but still liked it. Fun and boppy.

I found this mostly boring

chocante.. o melhor ate agora 3/5

Reminded me slightly of the Roni Size album, enjoyed this more though. Some songs definitely gave off a Fatboy slim feel. Solid 3

I’ve listened to a couple of these songs so it was nice to listen to the full album.

Pretty good, feels good to have as background music. Has a lowfi feel to it, the electronic bits blend quite well. Some of the rap parts might've been slightly out of place.

Pretty good, but also very repetitive and too long

Notable songs: Since I left you, Frontier's Psychiatrist

56/100 Based on this scale: 1 star - 0 to 19 2 stars - 20 to 39 3 stars - 40 to 59 4 stars - 60 to 79 5 stars - 80 to 100 Hmm, electronic music again? I'm going to continue to try to like it. Y'know what? This has interesting bits. Two Hearts in 3/4 Time had me grinning. Frontier Psychiatrist is fun too.

A winding road of samples, it can be abrupt at times, but the album is best if you just let it flow and don’t question it. Since I Left You is a classic

First couple songs were good

It was alright, I liked a handful of songs but wasn’t a huge fan of it.

Average

Pretty cool electronic and sample-heavy. Nice ambient for coding/working.

I've never heard of the Avalanches before this. The first track (and the fact Apple Music lists this as just "Pop") tricked me into thinking this was a Jackson 5-esque thing. The second track was just a continuation of the first one and it became obvious is wasn't. Some of the tracks were super repetitive, some seemed to just have random sounds thrown in as a quantity over quality thing. However, I will say this is the type of album that belongs on this list. Even though I didn't enjoy everything, there were certainly sections where I was getting into it, and overall, it's a very unique sounding album. Favorite track: Two Hearts in 3/4 Time. Also Frontier Psychiatrist.

Allt í lagi tónlist sem mér finnst eiga heima í bakgrunninum á einhverjum hipp og kúl veitingastað. Ekki eitthvað sem ég myndi hlusta markvisst á.

Didn’t really get it at the time and still don’t really buy into it.

Not my favorite

Nothing special, no song stood out

Decent album for some jam songs with fun mixing. Some of the tracks feel a bit stale compared to others, but I enjoyed everything overall. Solid 3/5

Not a terribly exciting album.

Electro pop en folie

It's a vibe for sure

One of those albums that doesn't sound that breakthrough now but then you remember it came out in 2000 and realize that it had a big impact.

Daft Punk vibes and I am all for it. 4/5

Plays like a DJ set on Mixcloud. Sometimes danceable, sometimes more atmospheric, but a busier type of atmosphere.

Cool beats, good background music.

Heard before. Really like the concept they went with, as in making an entire album with samples. Appeals to me. Yet still a 3, because the songs don't stick with me. I've seen the video for Frontier Psychiatrist before. Like the album cover. + Two Hearts in 3/4 Time + Avalanche Rock + Close To You + Electricity + Tonight May Have To Last Me All My Life + Frontier Psychiatrist + Summer Crane + Live At Dominoes Okay, I get it, that's a lot of songs I liked, but still.

Just meh

I liked it.

It was alright but I think a little bland. Nothing stood out to me, though I have previously favourited Frontier Psychiatrist. Standout track: Live at Dominos

Two bangers, but the rest not as good as I remember.

Enjoyable, though the horse and siren samples throughout could be jarring.

weird but good

I read that they didn’t think anyone was going to listen to this, so they didn’t bother keeping track of the samples they were using until the international release became imminent. It really tickles me thinking about the team of lawyers trying to decipher what needed clearance and what they could get by with.

Versatile samples and nice vibe

hit-n-miss, few tracks are nice, but overall barely my vibe

Fun album, some real bangers on this one. I especially enjoyed Live at Dominoes and Frontier Psychiatrist.

I did like this.

What a gem of an album. This didn't get the airplay it deserved when it was released

pretty good for a samples

Decent.

Reminiscent of my early days playing with Acid and Sound Forge as a kid. Learning about loops and layering and planning and affectation. Definitely a high water mark for this genre at the time, and would’ve been a nice lead into my Fatboy Slim phase. I like its freshness and space. It’s nicely optimistic.

Kinda drags on, but still enjoyed it

it's got the beepboops

Not really my thing but I can see it growing on me

Interesting electronic album, lots of samples, interesting beats, something you can just sit back and chill to. Definitely took inspiration from Daft Punk and the Chemical Brothers. Overall not a bad listen

Seemed to have promise but not feeling it.

party music

Fun, but not essential

4/16, 25%

In theory, the sampling is so cool. In practice, I struggled to listen to more than a few songs at a time

This album was made in 2000, but it sounds like it belongs in the 70s. I'm not really sure why this is on the list. It's just another 70s album in the 90s. Nothing to write home about. At least the nice thing about 70s albums in the 90s is that the formula was perfected twenty years prior, so they tend to be easier to listen to and are less offensive to the ear because they already know what doesn't work. That said, there's likely a better suited album for this list that was made in the 70s rather than this album that wasn't.

A much better sound collage than the Incredible String Band. I never need to hear this again but it was an interesting album to listen to.

Helt vhilll

Helt coolt men störande ibland och lite långt

Only enjoyed Frontier Physiatrist, the rest is too experimental for casual listening

A pretty entertaining record the first few goes but, over time, the smartness of the samples and the frontier psychiatry jokes wane and interest diminishes. Still, stands as testimony to cut and paste and making something new from the old.

Get a drink, have a good time now. Welcome to paradise.

Not my thing, ok but a bit samey and boring

I like it

A good mix... Enjoyed! 3/5

Not bad

Think I zoned out with this one. I can appreciate the musicianship behind it and the title track is good but probably just not for me.

This album is certainly strange and new to me but I like it.

interestingly weird, like a modern art museum piece, but didn't speak to me

Probably would have liked this more if I hadn’t listened on a Sunday morning

I got pulled out of the trip hop vibe trying to figure out whether the lyric to “Radio” was talking about noodles or doodles and what they had to do with “sending those signals.” It was apparently just “those digital signals,” but with some kind of effect on it that made it sound strange. Same thing on another line in that repetitive song. There are some great vocals and samples on “Since I Left You,” but they are often either overused and repetitive, or have a stop/start disruption that hurts the flow of the song.

This was perfect for grocery shopping

A good energy. Not enough substance to need to revisit.

Enjoyed this more than i was expecting.

What they do with sounds is an interesting interplay. I’m familiar with the follow up to this but I’d never dived in on this album. What I found was a fine piece of experimental electronic music. One that mixes samples well and provides a unique listening experience.

Kinda middle of the road album for me, I wanted to like it more. Seems like technically very well made music but nothing really gripped me.

Cool concept, having an album of diverse sample based songs. Individually some songs are extremely interesting and catchy, but as a whole the album lacks direction in my oppinion and feels as if they created songs that were not really finished or even hit a climax. 3/5

I know this says 2000. This feels like an 80s type album with such heavy sample usage. Avalanche rock was dope, way to short. Electricity felt really jarring while listening. It goes from a quite peice to a louder cacophony and mellows out again. Tonight may have to last me all my life felt very melancholic, and the added static gave it an old time feeling of longing. Summer crane was an enjoyable track, gets very surreal at the end. Live at dominoes could either be a modern song or a song from the 70s, pretty good track overall. I think it was my favorite track off of the album.

Frontier Psychiatrist is a gem. That boy needs therapy.

Today's helping is another electronica album, so I went in not expecting much. I have been known to hate that genre of music! The Avalanches are apparently an important exponent of "Plunderphonics", which is a music genre in the electronica realm, in which tracks are constructed by sampling recognizable musical works. Apparently, it is estimated that this album alone has roughly 900 samples scattered throughout! I find this album very repetitive, and one song runs into the next, so keeping track of what song I was listening to was a chore. For some reason, the whole album has a record crackling noise dubbed over the top of everything as if you were listening to this on an old hi fi, which is odd. As weird as it sounds, this was leaps and bounds better than any of the other electronica garbage that has been served up so far. Now don't get me wrong, it sure isn't something I would actively listen to on the daily, but as background music it isn't bad. Favourite songs: Frontier Psychiatrist, Electricity, Avalanche Rock, Live at Dominoes Least favourite songs: Two Hearts in 3/4 Time, Summer Crane 3/5

Awesome new sounds, gets a bit repetitive (72%)

This was fine, but the genre isn’t for me

Well made but not really for me.

Honestly didn't do much for me. I found the random talking too distracting. The music is varied, which is cool I guess.

A mixtape album rather than an album, a collage of samples lovingly assembled but also, like the 2manydjs and cut up stuff prevelant in the noughties also exhausting.

Ok edm, nice background music, but not something I would listen to

A ratos pop, a ratos electrónico. Fácil de escuchar. Sintetizadores y efectos varios

Alright

2.5/5 It’s not bad, but normally not my type of music. Still I kept interested in this album, so I’m having a hard time to rate this album. Maybe I should try it again some time. I like how the songs flow into eachother. Favourite song: - Frontier psychiatrist

Background music

Enjoyed this, I'll be looking further into their catalogue.

3.5 stars. Different sounding electronic album. Brings in a lot of elements and sounds and samples. Standout is "Frontier Psychiatrist" which seems chaotic but underlying beat and overall mix keeps it really fun.

pretty cool/out there techno album. i liked the orchestral stuff they threw in every once in a while

Good sampling

Funky lil tunes

þokkalega skemmtilegt, gæti spilað aftur. Verður frekar langdregið, margar tilraunir sem virka svipað

Some highs & lows. Overall a decent album. In certain settings it could be a 4 star.

I liked it but also a bit too much going on here

Frontier Psychiatrist was memorable

Creative jaunt through multiple genres from dance pop to trip hop. Expectations met. Definitely not an every day listen, but hits when this genre is what you're looking for

Samples making soundscapes for working or chillin

I prefer Endtroducing…’s beat heavy Space Odyssey and Steinski’s pop culture call-and-response to this sweeping, baroque approach to sampling. Then again, I adore It Takes A Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back which is pretty dense so maybe I just don’t like the execution here as much (It Takes a Nation brought the NOISE and Since I Left You is more easy listening so there’s that bias too). All that said, this is pretty enjoyable overall, I’m just picky.

A fun listen, lots of different styles meshed together. I somehow missed this when it was new.

Likable and fun and different. Baroquely layered and danceable (if one's into that sort of thing).

Since I left you is not what I expected. Flight tonight is kinda a poopy. Quiet electronic but really feels like it could have come out yesterday not 22 years ago. Frontier psychiatrist sounds awesome. Not quite my cup of tea, but does sound like a multiple listen sorta album. Wouldn't hate revisiting.

Nice instrumental album !

gets an extra star for frontier psychiatrist, rest of the album felt like background noise as it has no flow

begynte bra men litt plagsomt i lengden

I'm of two minds on this one. On one hand, it had some great grooves that helped me stay productive today. On the other, I can't remember much about any of it, even though I listened to it twice. It's like a dream that you can't hang onto or articulate once you wake up, and it doesn't really affect your life in any meaningful way, except that you got some good rest. Also there were sequences where it felt like the soundtrack for an adolescent mind-trip montage in a low-budget Netflix show, but it also wasn't quite as interesting as all that. Best track: All of them?

The album was off to a great start, the titular song was totally up my alley. I also appreciated the seamless transitions between every song, however it made it hard to appreciate each song for what it was as I didn’t know where one ended and another started. Not a big fan of the industrial electronic vibe in some songs but overall was a decent listening experience. As a note, part of ‘Summer Crane’ sounded exactly like a Minecraft backing track.

Not bad. I could see myself occasionally listening to some of this again if I remember

Interesting music with some cool songs on the album

Frontier Psychiatrist is awesome. Loved this when I was younger. But a full album of similar is a bit much.

This was a mostly pleasant and groovy thing to listen to half heartedly

Kuitenkin oikein kuunneltava levy

I like electronic and sample heavy music in general, so I expected to like this album. While I got the vibe the most part, I think some songs had samples which were played just too often and the album itself was a good 15min too long for my taste.

Hugely enjoyable but basically vacuous since it's an album of samples and a disco beat. Appeals to Millennials who hark back to the old days....bless.

Interesting sounds, not my favourite

Much better than their later crap. Still don't really get why I was so into this album as a teenager.

Had no idea what to expect from this and found it enjoyable enough

Surprising

Interesting one today, solid 3 for me, because it's not entirely for me but it's loads better than some generic background stuff. Also can't believe it's more than 20 years old, has a much fresher sound than that.

Kinda weird and some cool moments, definitely to be experienced the whole way through.

Ah yes, the plunderphomics album. Ive always enjoyed this album, but to be honest I've never seen why it's held in such high regard by some people. I've seen this on the top of many people's personal favorites, and it just never clicked that much with me. The absurd amount of sounds and textures, while being the main gimmick of the band, push me away to an extent. On this listen however, I did notice the mid-song transitions hit a bit differently, like the title track or frontier psychologist, which continue to not only be my favorite tracks on the album, but the only two I regularly return to.

Some fun tracks on this album. Not one I plan to return to as it just didn't grab me overall, but it's good.

Honestly, good background music for work, but not sure I'd just listen for fun.

It was a good album, but not my speed.

Good work music but didn't love it.

Cluttered, ambiance loops that go on for too long. However, it wasnt fully awful enough to give it a 2

To be revisited. I enjoyed the groove and truly excellent sampling , but struggled to concentrate on individual tracks or moments enough for it to sink in.

Had no idea what to expect when I popped this one, and the first track grabbed me right away! I fell right into the groove as they replicate some 70s soul sort of vibes. That changed and it all just sort of faded into the background. Not a bad listen when you just want something in the background.

not in the mood for noise rock right now

Flows neatly plus it brings good vibes. Nothing much else to say

I do like a bit of Frontier Psychiatrist, always gets stuck in my head for the next few days.

3.5/5. listenable but repetitive at times

not their best album but not bad

couple songs catch my ear, but doesn’t hit or sustain any high points for me

A bit of fun. A bit of chaos. Not memorable

I 100% thought this was a modern release - especially the title track. It's a jam so Im stoked to see it get more love recently. As a whole I think this album aged really well. The production was modern and experimental, the tracks flowed into each-other giving making this album feel more like a mix. That said I do think the track sequencing was a bit off. Chill tracks were followed by aggressive ones with experimental timing, it took me out of my flow a few times. Standout Tunes: Since I Left You, Two Hearts in 3/4 Time. Frontier Psychiatrist

I expected to like this one a lot more than I actually did. I appreciate the originality and creativity of the sampling, and how the album flows as one continuous mix, but a lot of the individual tracks which make up that mix just didn't command my attention as much as I had hoped. The standout tracks here are strong, there's just a few too many skippable beats in-between. The artificial vinyl crackling on many of the tracks became increasingly grating as the album went on, and I can only imagine that hearing it on actual vinyl would be extra irritating in combination with the natural crackling one might experience. I suspect this album was highly influential when it released, but I definitely prefer the Avalanches' newer releases "Wildflower" and "We Will Always Love You" more than this one. Standout tracks: "Since I Left You", "Two Hearts in 3/4 Time", "A Different Feeling" and "Frontier Psychiatrist"

I think this was a really well done indie record especially for a debut album Most tracks have a fun, upbeat instrumental I enjoyed this however there were low points on it I also really enjoyed the MF DOOM remix of Tonight May Have To Last Me All My Life 6/10

Zomerse klanken.

Hey, it's that "boy needs therapy" song! Very much not my usual wheelhouse but quite good music to have on in the background while working.

Who doesn't love Frontier Psychiatrist?

A plunderporn of a crate digger's wet dream and sample clearance lawyer's nightmare. This patchwork of samples could have either become a terrible gimmick a la Jive Bunny or a stroke of genius - luckily it was the latter. Best Tracks: Since I Left You; Flight Tonight; Frontier Psychiatrist

Wow. In terms of enjoyability this was really all over the map. Some tracks felt dull ("Since I Left You" being a prime example--sorry folks, but I didn't like the title track). However, "Frontier Psychiatrist" is a fucking banger and I dare anyone to say differently. Best track, hands down. Just sitting around the house when your brain goes "That boy needs therapy!" Seriously. Very creative use of sampling. If I loved every track this much I'd give this album five stars. Such a good song and worth listening to the ones I didn't care for to find a gem.

A compelling collage of sounds that for the most part works. I just don't want to know how the sausage was made, for I fear it's just a couple of kids who've mastered Audacity or Pro Tools.

Meh - I like the general vibe, but not their best album

Middle ground on this one, interesting work, but is it one I would sit back and revisit on my own otherwise? Unlikely...although I liked the ETOH track and the first two tracks - title track Since I Left you and Stay Another Season.

Musically this album is fine and pleasant enough to listen to, easy on the ear with a bit of a retro groove and a sense of humor. Much of the sampling is overly loopy and could have been used more creatively. Bleeps, static and other noises are also done a little heavy handedly. That said, this was pretty fun. The second half of the album is top notch. Fave Songs: ETOH, Summer Crane, Frontier Psychiatrist, Live at Dominoes, Electricity, Extra Kings

Cheerful, refreshing background music that probably goes really well with a poolside or beach pub setting. But, other than "that famous track", it's not something that shakes the very foundations of music. Indeed, the entire affair sounds like it's just one song that's about an hour long (and clearly, that had been a deliberate creative choice). Not that there's anything wrong with cheery music for the background.

Never heard this in full before, though I evidently heard a lot of it on Triple J when it came out. It's good enough, I suppose, "Frontier Psychiatrist was a genius single, but it wears thin over a whole album. Something with an estimated 1000-3000 samples should be doing more with them, I feel.

Does this boy really need therapy?

Best Song: Frontier Psychologist. The selection of vocal tracks work really well together to tell a story, mixed well with nice use of drums and scratches. Worst Song: Flight Tonight. If you're going to repeat a sample that much, make sure you've picked an interesting sample. Overall: A good background album that feels almost more like a live DJ set than a recorded album. Nothing really stands out as high- or lowlights; instead the entire production works as a single flow. Feels like great music to have in the background while cooking or working.

That boy needs therapy! I am not a big fan of the Genre, but this one is good - maybe even - really good! I knew the song "Frontier Psychiatrist" from when I lived in Europe back in those days. It's a Gem. The album is really interesting with its use of loops and samples. Definitely the best electronica album on this list (so far). 3/5

A very interesting album, listed as pop, but felt almost like a jet set radio knock off soundtrack. Lots of repeating lines and synths which seems like the perfect skating/rollerblading type of music. Would I listen to it again? Probably not.

Interesting Plunderphonics experiment. Too frantic for me, but I get the artistry.

If this came out just a couple years earlier than it did I'd be much more impressed with it. But to me it's got nothing on artists like DJ Shadow, Daft Punk, The Chemical Brothers, Fatboy Slim, etc. I mean it's fun and all but it just seems to lack the depth and range of those artists I mentioned above that preceded them. And as impressive as the number of samples on this album is, I don't think they utilized them as well as artists like Girl Talk or J Dilla would go on to do a few years later. I could see this working in a much more interesting way as beats for MCs to rap over, but as is, nothing really sticks out to me, with the exception of "Frontier Psychiatrist," which I feel is a standout track.

Had high hopes for this one because "Frontier Psychiatrist" is a bop... but the rest fell flat for me. Sampling is fine but not very interesting to me.

This one was all over the map. I liked it on places, got bored/detached at others. It's easily the best album I've gotten in this genre so far. I think this album could be a grower for me.

Cool vibes

helt okej

A lot of EDM and pop and hiphop owes a lot to this (experimental disco?) record! Never heard of it before

DEXTER'S CRIMINALLY INSANE!!!

Its a cool sound for sure...good for the background

A bit too much noise for me. Some good tracks though

Boas batidas eletrônicas com melodia.

It’s an interesting experiment, creating an entire album from samples and there’s no shortage of cool samples weaved into the songs. But outside of the first track the others seem to be lacking a core.

It takes great talent to sample from so many sources and then stitch them together into a(semi) coherent whole. So I must give them credit for that. I thought Since you left me and Psychiatrist were excellent, and I may have enjoyed the disco dance beats more, say 20 yrs ago when this first came out. My reference album for sampled music is still KLF’s seminal “Chill out” though. But this was still a pretty good effort

5/10. Absolutely insane. Not to be confused with insanely good, but it was listenable, despite not really being my cup of tea. What it did, it did well.

The album was alright. It was a lot of sampling and mixing. I didn't feel the need to skip any songs, but I don't have a need to listen to it again.

Cool concept...light but with layers

Essential listening but by a narrower margin than I expected. The appeal of the album is in the pure volume of its flow, the overwhelming cascade of samples in a configuration which changes just ahead of your ear. But sound design seems largely left behind, and there's quite a bit of loud from the front and not much detail work other than the arrangement.

A 3.5 for me. I really enjoyed it because of the style and sampling. No vocals, but the way that the samples were used still helped to tell a story with each song. It did feel just a bit repetitive and long at times. Deep and complex sound without being too busy.

it was decent! As it started I wasn't really into it but it grew on me.

A Quentin Tarantino movie is the best way to describe this album. Like his movies, this album creates something original out of a plethora of preexisting media from classical music samples, to audio clips, to other samples. In addition, all of the electronica albums I've gotten so far have been very distinct from each other yet still tend to have the same markers. Fatboy Slim is different from Daft Punk is different from The Avalanches yet they are all undeniably the same genre. This felt more ambient than those other albums though. Fav songs: Radio, Live at Dominoes

Not a lot to say. I kinda liked it. It was slight better then Meh.

First time hearing the whole album, it actually holds up well. First album I'm aware of to be basically 100% samples, which was ahead of its time

29th September 2021 Listened on the living room speaker in the morning while chatting to one of jen's model boys will who stayed. Really enjoyable, innovative and would certainly reward repeat listens.

Definitely interesting in how many samples and layers exist in these songs. I feel like it has Moby Play and Kanye MDTF on steroids. Many of the songs work, I really enjoy Electricity, the vibe of Etoh, Psychiatrist and Since I Left You. Too many others feel like unsuccessful experiments.

Some of this was funkier than I remember.

A bit intense, but also refreshing

I'm not sure I'm really into the robot/bleep vibes, but it was overall not unpleasant.

Interesting

Decent enough album, very chill. Highlight of the album was the slightly less chilled out Frontier Psychiatrist.

Another one that’s not quite for me. Too many lasers.
