Reviews (page 6 of 10)

This was an odd and interesting listen.

I was hoping to discover some more gems on here bit nothing else quite reaches the heights of Frontier Psychiatrist

I bought this when it came out as I loved Frontier Psychiatrist - remember being underwhelmed at the time and that is still the case - time has not healed. Its a perfectly listenable album - but I'm struggling to understand why its on this list as not really sure its essential listening.

Excellent electronic music out of Australia. I can’t believe I was totally unaware of this group.

Another genre I'd never really come acroos. Actually ok to listen to for a while but not particularly soul stirring.

cool for da club

Pretty cool, but I don't appreciate the hectic sound as much as other sample-based producers like PE (there I do enjoy it) or Shadow (less hectic).

This album is a very pleasant curated time capsule of music old and new with The Avalanches as sonic narrators and tour guides. Despite tapping my foot throughout, it feels a little like a beautiful experiment rather than something that is timeless or even sustainable . I wasn't sorry to go through the entire album, but I was ready to move on by the third track.

I enjoyed this album. I think some tracks had too many repetitive samples at certain moments, but it was a great first listen. Interesting instrumentals and great production overall.

A fun romp through hip hop, club tunes, soul, and library music. At times it felt like I was listening to a DJ mix rather than a traditional album, which was maybe the intention. It sounds like a spiritual companion to Deltron 3030, an album which precedes it by just half a year. Once I got to the track “Frontier Psychiatrist” I had (slightly unpleasant) flashbacks to our old friend Dr. Octagon. An enjoyable album, if not the most memorable.

Another really fun background music album, like how the core sample follows through the whole album, giving a wordless album a narrative arc. Could have been a classic if they had someone decent rapping over a handful of the songs. Almost a 4

Mixed feelings, the songs sometimes had really nice grooves and other times kinda repetitive or artificial

Part lofi part obnoxious radio show

Not familiar with this album or artist. Enjoyed it. A cool project, gets a bit boring by the end. They probably could have made this 20 minutes shorter and stopped at 700 samples. I would queue this up again to have on while working or otherwise occupied. It blends nicely and is not distracting. Not something that really blows my mind, dead middle of the pack, 3 stars. Maybe if I spent the time to really dive in I would get more engaged by the depth and layering, but I don't want to. Fav - Frontier Psychiatrist

It was a decent listen, good background music while I was doing some work. Will mostly have forgotten about it by tomorrow though.

Interesting for the first few tracks but was kind of over it by Track 3. Got better in the second half again but was kind of samey.

Time to eat a little crow. I have repeatedly complained about dance records on this list, stating that it's boring to sit on your couch and listen to music intended for a club. But really, that just means it's not very good music (at least for me). The Avalanches prove me wrong with an eclectic collection of beats and samples and generally fun dance tracks. It goes on a bit too long and some tracks are not quite as good as others, but overall, I enjoyed this one

This is something I respect, but can't love.

I liked the two famous songs on this album and I quite liked the rest...but it was just very background-y. Maybe if I listened to it a bunch more times, I'd get into it.

favorites: radio; a different feeling; electricity

bom pra ouvir quando não quer se estressar escolhedno alguma musica

I liked it then I was bored by the repetitions. But I really wanted to like it more. What are you gonna do?

It's not ambient but it's definitely passive music

Very busy but I like it

Oh, they are starting the album with a kitschy opening. Oh its the whole song... Oh its the whole album... Good for what it is.

It’s not bad, but it’s not my bag, and it feels more like a DJ set rather than a traditional album. Frontier Psychiatrist is the highlight, and is entertaining enough, but I’m never spinning this again.

Now in the work album rotation

It's ok. The sampling heavy electronica is fun, but gets a little old quickly. 3/5

like a parfait. Started off nice with really good textures, like ice cream and something crunchy. But as i progressed through the album the parfait became more deranged. Do not put fried chicken and soy sauce in my parfait. However an interesting experience and I keep thinking about this album.

Definitely started off strong and went downhill. Clearly they had something going with the first track so I'm not sure how they managed to lose it for the rest of the album. I did like the overall vibe of it though. I felt like a changed person in a good way. It was like eating one of those super sour sweets when it starts off just sweet, most of the time is like sensory hell in your mouth, but afterwards you're left with a surprisingly pleasant aftertaste.

Honestly thought we were headed for a 5 star album after that first song but those hopes were immediately cut short as the rest of the songs unfurled. I understand there are certain conventions to this type of music but I do kind of feel like some parts were akin to exciteable primary school child on the electronic keyboard sound effects function. Also, some of the adjacent songs appear to be a literal continuation of each other - same lyrics/beat/everything just under a new name...why? Some of its kind of a vibe though.

Interesting, but doesn’t hold my interest for the whole album.

Nice cut & paste job of samples but doesn't leave a lasting impression

There's some genuinely interesting stuff here. I have a hard time saying a favourite track, as there are movements of a song I'd get into, then it'd change and I'd be taken right out. I've always enjoyed the extensive sampling done in this kind of electronic music, like George Clanton's stuff or DJ Pogo... but sonically I wasn't really loving how The Avalanches did it. Decent listen. Mad respect for the influence it had on the subgenre, but overall not my favourite.

Couldn’t do it

Surprised that I liked this as much as I did.

Rätt spännande men stor variation i hur bra jag tyckte det lät.

nghe rất thú vị nhưng hơi trôi, không thích bài nào specifically cả

pretty good. honestly too long for me as an album with no real vocals. I found myself wanting to hear something else towards the end.

Strangely I liked this less on second listen, it’s usually the other way round. Guess I have to be in the mood. It’s like they threw everything but the kitchen sink at it - it works really well sometimes, at other times it’s too much, busy and overwhelming

I’ve never actively listened to The Avalanches, though I’m sure I’ve heard them in passing. I recently reviewed (and was underwhelmed by) Massive Attack’s debut album Blue Lines, which is cited as the origin of trip-hop. I appreciate this isn't strictly trip-hop, but I think this record shows how far the idea developed in its first decade. I love hearing the evolution of sub-genres. The Avalanches used almost 1000 samples on this album, which seems like it would have taken absolutely forever to compile and arrange. That's an impressive feat and maybe explains why it took 16 years to make a follow-up record. My biggest criticism is that the repetitive vocal samples get a little tiresome over the hour-long runtime. It's listenable, but more dynamic vocals - or less vocals all together - might have punched this up for me. They figured it out for 2016's Wildflower and 2020’s We Will Always Love You, which are both great records.

3.44/5 Stars Top Songs: Close To You, Stay Another Season, Frontier Psychiatrist

Ok album with smooth transitions from one song to another. Listened to this while doing other stuff and it seems like it is perfectly made for "background" music. Best track was Frontier Psychiatrist. Shout out to Radio as it was close second.

Enjoyed the samples, and scratches all over the album. However, some of the loops are redundant at times. A few tracks are strangely familiar and I’m having trouble placing them. Overall, decent album for background work in my opinion. 2.9/5.0

There are some good moments here, and I think a lot of people consider this an iconic album, but I honestly liked 2016's "Wildflower" better.

Esse estilo de música eletrônica não me pega muito, mas é um álbum interessante por experimentar bastante mesclando com outros gêneros. Entre acertos e erros, tem coisas de valor. Melhor do álbum: "Electricity". Pior do álbum: "Radio".

Too much repetition without maintaining my attention, Frontier Psychiatrist however is amazing

3.3. A lot of the beats were cool, but they were a little too repetitive at times.

#784. Since I Left You and Frontier Psychologist are good, but the rest is pretty meh. 3/5: fine

I really thought I had heard this earlier on this list, but it's the only Avalanches album I have had (so far, at least). Of course the standout track is Frontier Psychiatrist, the rest are pretty forgettable although pleasant enough. Reminds me of Lemon Jelly and Chemical Brothers.

Heard Frontier Psychiatrist before. Was a bit disappointed that no other song on the album matched its chaotic vibe to me. But I was really impressed how all the songs were connected and yet didn't sound the same/repetitive. A very cohesive album 3/5

Really good album but I have never really loved it as much as its reputation

This is a really well respected album in a lot of music communities that I've followed throughout my life and it's my first time listening to it. It's cool, I dig it. Sometimes I struggle a bit with very sample-heavy music though, I think my brain will try to pull the sample apart from the "new" layers and it ends up trying to be a subconscious game that I don't really want to play. Kind of takes me out of it and it's hard for me to just sit and enjoy it. I think that's why I like sample-heavy artists that are a bit more frantic and high energy (like death's dynamic shroud gets) because it doesn't let your brain sit into a groove for too long. There are some cool ideas in here but right now it's only a 3 for me, like a 3.3 rounded down. It's dynamic and it goes places but I'm not exactly totally blown away by it. I'm sure there's reasons why it's so universally loved and I just need to listen to it more.

Another band where Im aware of them off the back of one song. Frontier psychiatrist seemed to give them a more alternative following you wouldn't expect for an electronic band, I guess as its the sort of sampling you'd expect from hip hop. Didn't mind the album but don't think psychiatrist is very indicative of the rest of it, was expecting a bit more tongue in cheek but it was fairly down the middle. Tracks did have beats and samples slightly more interesting than groove armada say, it definitely wasn't house, but it wasn't particularly interesting.

I wouldn't have placed this as in the 90s.... Would've said closer to 2003 ish. This wasn't really what I expected, but I quite enjoyed it. I thought I only knew frontier psychiatrist, but knew since I left you too. Didn't realise that was by them. Those 2 are the highlights. I think 3.5, likely won't be rushing back though

This was a fun listen for about half an hour. Past that point I started to lose interest. Creating an album like this in 1999 is way more impressive with the constraints of technology at that time. In 2025, it doesnt inspire the same because a teenager can now make this on their laptop with modern technology.

It was good.

Good background music. Hard to actively listen to

Kind of a weird one, Frontier Spychiatrist was pretty great but overall not one I'll revisit

Very creative and eclectic. A little too chaotic for me personally but I appreciate the variety and skill of the mixing.

When I was in junior high I pirated a techno mixtape from my sister’s friend’s cousin. One of the songs on there was called Stylophone by a band called Three Little Boys and other one was called Kiss the Razor Edge by Digital Diggers. This album reminds me of those days listening to early techno on my over-the-head wire headphones. I did my the listen. Some of reminded me of mid-20s martini bar days. Overall, I didn’t find anything revolutionary or new here. The song Radio was a favorite. I could come back here but I don’t know if I will…

Random thoughts: * I already knew this group. Can't remember how I discovered them but definitely have Since I Left You in my rotation for a while now. * I really dug Frontier Psychiatrist as well. Just a funky fun song. * Also check out "Because I'm Me" which is on a different album. * There seems to always be a new electronic sample artist who comes sort of out of nowhere and has an awesome album like this. I'm kind of thinking about Girl Talk and Modest Mouse and other of their ilk. Just seems to be a recurring trend. * I like this album and it should be regularly in my rotation but it's more of a 3.5 than 4

Electronica I missed from the time period I was listening. It was fine.

Has some good classy songs but a lot of lesser songs too. 3.5

No sabia que esperarme pero ha sido muy refrescante, mucho ruido pero bien ordenado, tiene algo que me encandila

This mostly fell in the background for me while I was working, but Frontier Psychiatrist was incredible. Especially the "Can you think of anything that talks" drop.

Fun album with some entertaining tracks. 3.5 stars

i didn’t hate it ! i just sort of thought it was a bit background music-y. i can see why people rave about this tho, i can see its influence

That was interesting and I didn’t mind it. Old school hip hop vibes in the beats, wasn’t really a rap album though. I liked it, can’t quite explain why

iznenađujuće solidno

Fine in the background. Bit repetitive but a few bangers

6/10 - decent album but too long, good to hear more electronic/dance music

The thinking man's electronic music. Less ¨robots fucking,¨ more ¨collage of sound.¨ Not even sure what it means but much easier to listen to than most electronic music I've heard. I'm biased.

Someone had played me the title track on this about 20yes ago, and always liked it. Never visited the whole album because it’s not typically my thing, but this is pretty listenable for the genre

I usually see electronic and think it is an auto 2 at best... but I actually enjoyed this one. Impressive they sampled over 1,000 tracks but it isn't in your face "look what we can do" type of BS. Just a cool tapestry of vibes. Assumed I wouldn't recognize a song...until Frontier Psychiatrist. Not sure how or why I know that song. Probably one of my least favorites on the album. This doesn't rise to the great level IMO, but still solid. 3.25/5

Albums that amount to a glorified DJ set are tough to rank. It was a fine listen and a bit of fun, but hard to care about. If I only ever listen to 1001 albums my whole life, is this really one of them? I was thinking 2 stars, but I don’t want to be ungenerous.

Komplett unbekannter Artist für mich. Hat größtenteils Spaß gemacht, auf Dauer aber etwas eintönig.

Grundsolide - nicht mehr, nicht weniger.

Not bad. Not great. Some interesting songs.

I want so bad to like this but it just kind of disappeared into the background for me. It feels like good study music-- no hook to distract me from my thoughts.

Jeg er nok 20 år for sein til denne, men er et par høydepunkter her. Spesielt Frontier Psychiatrist. Knall.

Since I Left You is a wild collage of samples and moods - dreamy, funny, and sometimes downright weird. It’s like flipping through radio stations in a half-remembered dream. When it clicks, it’s magical, but other times it drifts a little too far into its own haze. Still, there’s a real charm in its messiness and warmth - a record that feels alive even when it’s uneven.

Meh. 2.5 rounded up.

Not sure why I liked this but thought it was pretty decent. Not quite 4 worthy.

A bit of a mixed bag - the tracks I liked, I loved. At its best, this is a really fun and inventive use of sampling. However, some of it just kind of washed over me.

Fun but I think Fatboy Slim did ut better

it’s an interesting album, not one of the best, but not one of the worst. there are some bangers in this one though

Eh? alright? Fine?

Wasn't for me. Reminded me of RJD2 but lacking in depth. Instrumentals with lots of vocal samples. A bit too repetitive and grating.

A good album, I liked Two Hearts in 3/4 Time, A Different Feeling and Frontier Psychiatrist the most.

Probably the closest I’ll get to enjoying a live DJ set. (3.5)

Oof. This was a bit tiring. I prefer Lemon Jelly.

I like it, but there's this 'distraction' quality about it that annoyed me.

good but also annoying

I enjoyed it, I would be lying if I said I didn't - but this album feels... Pointless. There is no payoff, the whole thing feels like 60 minutes of - a pleasant, causeyes, it was pleasant - interlude. Plus the fact that 100% of the sounds I heard were just samples, apparently around 900. God damn, that's a lotta work, that's for sure. But that's probably what made this album feel so pointless. It sounds nice, it feels nice, but it's empty inside. Towards the end I got more interested in when it will end rather than what other samples will be creatively used in this record. It's an interesting concept, I got invested in it, but I won't be coming back to it. Quite an experience, but I think it'll stay a once-in-a-lifetime experience. At least for now.

genialidad

Lyrical parts are worlds better than the pure instrumental or synth bits.

Taking influence from Daft Punk, hip hop, R&B, Motown, electronic music and maximalizing on it. They pack a lot of samples from all sorts of sources into each song, which can range from an aural delight to an attack on the senses. The album can feel a little repetitive at times, but it's mostly fine. I am very exhausted by "Frontier Psychiatrist". I have heard it too much, so now I find it a little annoying. I see Since I Left You on many "essentials" lists and I agree that it belongs there, but it's not an album I particularly like. Highlights: "Tonight"

I doubt I will return to it, but it turned out more engaging for electronic record, than I've expected. Nice sound collages. I doubt I will return to it though, at this amount this kind of music is kinda tiring to me.

Couple cracking tunes, bit chaotic at time bit that's the nature of album of sample. Original for its time.

An original of its time

I've come across the Avalanches a few times throughout my musical journey. I remember liking what I heard, and that feeling sort of remains after listening to this album all the way through. This was definitely intended to be listened to continuously from top to bottom. The singles are standalone for the most part, but each track flows into the next, exuding a (very heavy) sample-based dance and instrumental sound. Now, I don't know if you can "dance" to most of these tracks per se, but they are crafted well enough that the listener can enjoy in an atmospheric sense if they so desire. That being said, these sorts of albums that fall under the "sampledelia" umbrella tend to drone on a bit too long for my liking. Maybe I'd enjoy it more if I just submitted and went along for the ride.

I had never heard of plunderphonics but it makes sense. I love the statement the brazen thievery makes. These sounds are for us all! Who hasn’t found immense joy in an artist sampling the very best part of a song and looping it again and again to scratch that itch? This album was good but doesn’t add too much to the pile that others haven’t already covered. Great working/focus music though!

I'm pretty sure I've never heard anything from The Avalanches or this album before except the fantastic "Frontier psychiatrist", which is kind of a nice change of pace after several albums in a row with very familiar artists and/or songs. I wasn't sure what to expect, but I guess it wasn't exactly this sort of happier-than-average electronic/trip-hop/disco atmosphere. At times they even reminded me of a more electronic-oriented sample-heavy Jamiroquai (plus bits of Fatboy Slim, Portishead, and even Daft Punk), which made for an enjoyable experience, even if the album was a bit long in the tooth at times. And they got off to a great start with the title track, largely on the strength of the quirky miners-discovering-a-dance-studio video. "Radio" is another strong track, as was "Electricity" and "ETOH" (in addition to the excellent "Frontier psychiatrist" with its almost hypnotically engaging video). It was also impressive to read how much time and effort (and eventually reworking of the album) was involved in tracking down and (largely) getting clearance for their thousands of samples--a shame that the eventual international edition version wasn't as complete as their original release, but kudos to them for getting an apparently very elusive release from Madonna for the "Holiday" bassline in "Stay another season". Also interesting to discover that this was a product of Australian DJs, not that there's anything obviously Australian-sounding about it. This would have been an easy four stars if it had been about half or two-thirds as long.

I like this. Don’t love it and I’m not sure it’s a must listen but it’s good. 2.5

Some people really like this, I… get it’s existence

Ech. Ja i elektronika nigdy się nie polubimy. Ta była na granicy słuchalności. Nigdy nie wrócę do niej z własnej woli, ale te momenty z kojącym damskim wokalem były nawet przyjemne. 5/10

Interesting sounds. Beachy pshyco techno sound

I need to buy a plane ticket

weird but good

There’s something beautiful about this, that I can’t quite put my finger on

This was alright on the whole. A few parts where it got super repetitive, but the rest was ok as background noise 3 ⭐️

Overrated and very messy, but has it's moments when it settles down. Most of the time its sounds like a trainwreck DJ mix.

acc enjoyed an electronic album this is crazy

One of my favourite songs of all time is Frontier Psychiatrist. This album has some good songs, but most of it is just samples. I mean, that’s what it is. I can understand how some people really like this album, but for me, I prefer more structure. Fun album, but not really my thing.

Ah, this is that. Knew the title track aaand ... bit baffled here. Not about this album, but the 3.28 rating and the ratio of upvoted 5 star VS less than that reviews. Are y'all new to music, from roundabout that time? Sample music? This isn't "amazing". This is - to pick only albums from this 1001 list - Moby Meets Fatboy Slim, after Moby or Fatboy Slim. With a generous handful of french house/disco as popularised by Daft Punk sprinkled on top. After Daft Punk. This isn't innovative. This is 4 years after "Endtroducing...". The only thing that stands out here in a comparison with other works like it is the sheer quantity of samples which means jack shit as I'm generally more impressed by people doing more with less. And so should you. It works as a creative crafting achievement, it really does, but - here's a sample for ya - 𝘪𝘵 𝘭𝘪𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘯𝘴 𝘭𝘪𝘬𝘦 𝘢 "nailed it" 𝘮𝘦𝘮𝘦.

Interesting concept, that is inginius and creative, yet being a complete collage, it is a paradox, as it is creative in that aspect, while at the same time exposing the incapacity of the band members to, at this point and perhaps on purpose, create without cut and paste. A paradox indeed and an intriguing listen

Really interesting sample work here. Creative, dreamy, and, dare I say, full of vibes. I’d give it a 3.5 if I could, but we’re dealing in absolutes here. An hour is a long time for a vibes-based album, so I must rate accordingly, although I do think this is very well made and nice to listen to.

That boy needs therapy

There is more electronic music on this list than hip hop...that's not a good ratio. I find that electronic songs with just the music is often ok. But the need for these electronic groups to put one line of a song or dialog over and over and over and over again in a song is not. It gets annoying so quickly. This is background music at a salon that has hair cuts that cost as much as a car payment. This could be the alternate soundtrack to Punch Drunk Love. All the random cuts of dialog feel more like a display of how much media they consume rather than adding to the song. These songs are like 15 second loops that are then repeated for 5 minutes.

I appreciate what they’re doing here. If you’re a musician who has ever tried to create a song out of samples you realize how hard this is. It’s so much easier to just MAKE the part you want. The songs they make are complex, and fun! There is a joy here that’s intoxicating to listen to. My main issue with this is the repetitive vocal phrases. I listen to people repeating themselves constantly all day so I don’t enjoy it when listening to an album.

Never heard of this band, but then I don't listen to much of this type of music. I did enjoy it though.

This is kinda like an aussie version of shibuya-kei. Bit too long and repetitive, but nice enough vibes

it was fine! a little tedious but i enjoyed every part of it just not a lot

This is a beautifully crafted record. The samples are creative and interesting, and most of the beats kept me engaged. However, it’s still too long of an album and there’s lots of repetition.

Pleasantly surprised with this one. I was expecting another boring electronic album, but this was nice, all the sampling going on and beat switches made this enjoyable and less repetitive than a lot of electronic music sounds to my ears.

I wouldn't actively listen to this ever, but it's good background noise, on low volume preferably.

Thoughts before listening: I believe that the schtick for this album is that the songs are all made from samples. ..or at least heavily rely on sampling. This has definitely made a ton of indie rock/cool music site best of lists, but I have never tried to listen to it. Mainly because I am turned off by the idea of songs built fully from samples. I will feel pretty silly if I play this now and I was completely wrong about the album 🤣 Review: Yeah so I was right about the schtick here. Its definitely an electronic dance album made up entirely of samples. There is a certain joy that I can get from this type of an album, but it also tends to slip into background music very quickly. Especially without any vocals to latch on to. The approach here is similar to something like the Beastie Boys (especially on Paul's Boutique) that I love, but again its the lyrics that draw me in as opposed to the backing tracks. This is perfectly fine, but likely not destined to be a re-listen for me. 3-stars

Always interesting sometimes thrilling album of that appears to made entirely of samples. Would spin again!

Couldn't get into it

I like electronic music, but this album is too repetitive and has too many sound effects for my liking.

One notch above ambient, occasionally I thought something interesting might be about to happen

Some nice blending from one song to the next

A kaleidoscopic collage of samples, Since I Left You is a dreamy, genre-blurring journey through lost love and joyous rediscovery. The Avalanches stitch together disco, soul, and forgotten vinyl into a seamless, nostalgic groove equal parts melancholy and euphoria. It’s not my cup of tea, but I can understand the love for this long player

It was very good! But also repetitive. Too marks for vibe

The album feels a bit too long, because when listening to it as a whole, the gimmicks start to wear through. The way they get a one sample and rhythmically play with it. "Frontier Psychiatrist" is still great, and it seems to have more richness to it than other tracks. I also like how each track is mixed into the next, but it also turns the album more into pleasantly cool background music than something more engaging

I usually like music that’s “a bit much” and will listen to industrial metal or thrash to held drown out thoughts if I need to focus. There are so many samples that take you out of the music and overload your senses that I got a headache from listening to this. If it was toned down by even a small amount, I would have probably given this a 5

This feels like if you gave Pure Moods a small shot of adrenaline.

Decent album, but far too long

Dexter is criminally insane.

I'd be curious to know if there are people whose favorite album is this one. I'd like to study them.

nagy csapatás volt rá főzés közben, jól össze van rakva, táncolható meg minden, de nem szerettem meg ezt sem.

I've heard worse! Seriously though, this isn't a bad album. I would go 6/10, so it's a 3/5.

It's alright.

cool but got repetitive

Summery r&b sounds

Hip hop techno feel

Probably way more interesting to listen to on Ketamine.

Bought this on the day it came out and played it a lot at the time. I never truly loved it though and revisiting it l these years later I can see why. It has some great tunes in it, but it is so messy, it sounds like a live DJ mix not a studio album. It is restless throughout, and ultimately the relentless kitchen sink approach is irritating. It's compared a lot to Endtroducing on here, but the difference with DJ Shadow's approach is that everything seems to be done with great care and precision, whereas this has a throw enough shit at a wall approach. A lot of the time it sounds like a trainwreck.

should be up my alley... but it was a little too repetitive. still nice

ehhhhhhh

Electronic music is not my forte. Must sound the same with same rhythmic patterns over a long period of time. Although I didnt love this, these was a unique type of electronic music more like a construcction of sounds sampled from known music and turned into a mixed media collage sort of speak. Creativity gets a 10 the music by itself is just not my thing but obectively I can appreciate their work.

Unlike any album made before. A new approach to music. Is it one of my favorites? No, but I still like it quite a bit.

funky, enjoyed

This album is very much of a time along with other white boy hip hop/sound collage stuff i listened to like Mr Scruff, the Books, Scratch Perverts, DJ Shadow. It's a lot more messy and arty than I was expecting from their singles. The inclusion of various scene setting samples gives it a real narrative / concept album feel. Despite being of its time it rarely sounds dated, due to the timelessness of the samples used.

I’ve actually discovered this band only recently. Had no idea they’d been around for as long as they have. I’ve been into editions and sample-based music since the 90s, but never came across these guys. I think it’s good, but not as good as some of their peers. I’d rather listen to Caribou, who I think they share a lot of DNA with. Still, not a bad listen by any means. 3.5/5

Happy jolly drum and samples. Raw expressive vocals ?

I knew the 2 singles, and they're both bangers. I was hoping the whole album may end up the same. Was left disappointed. 3 stars but they're for frontier psychiatrist though as that song has given me lots of joy over the years.

Feels like an influence for Jungle today. I miss words sometimes but I like getting lost in an album that feels like a morphing emotion. Cool vibe for a spring day.

It sounds nice, but something about this style of music feels incomplete. It's like they're almost songs but not quite

Not necessarily my jam, but it moves quickly through its tracks with pace. I'll always appreciate club music that respects the aim is to move the body in space.

It’s an oft mentioned classic in Aussie music circles, it’s not really my thing but I appreciate the skill required. Good to have some Australian representation on the list anyway

Dancey, fun. Very much a product of its time. Touches of Daft Punk and Girl Talk and everything that made partying out at dance clubs in the mid 00's the best. That all said, it got a wee bit grating towards the end. Fun listen but may not come back to it over and over again. 3.5/5

Eh. Electronic.

I can appreciate just how difficult it must be to create an album from around 1,000 samples and to have it flow so smoothly, but ultimately this is just cool background music to me. I tried to really seek out what makes it "great" since it's in the Top 100 of all time on RYM, but it just didn't pull me in. That said, go check this out on whosampled.com - I went through all the samples featured for Frontier Psychiatrist and it was a lot of fun - helped me appreciate the artistry a little more, but unfortunately still wasn't enough to make me want to rate the album higher. Favorite tracks: Radio, Flight Tonight, Frontier Psychiatrist, Etoh.

There is a lot to digest here so I would need to spend more time with it to really get an idea of my appreciation, but I like plunderphonics in general and there were some nice moments that grabbed me right away

I think I'll have to come back to it to really appreciate it to its real value. Still, the sample work here is just truly amazing. Here's a 3 that might get to a 4 in a close future.

That one is a real oddity. So much is going on for an hour long. I found myself totally lost in it, but I think it's a good thing. I can't explain, but I enjoyed it!

It’s fine background music. Not something I would think to put on.

Better than the other electronic albums I've received so far on this list. Not by a whole lot though, as the genre still sucks.

I got the gist of this pretty quickly. One of those "if you like it you like it" albums but I lost interest right away. Not bad, but I don't see how this is different from any other EDM.

The singles are amazing but I have never heard so much filler on one album before.

How good is Frontier Psychiatrist, though

For a band called The Avalanches, this sounds an awful lot like beach music! It begins by drawing strongly on the late 60s and early 70s with soulful samples and a detailed wall of sound which ebbs and flows throughout each track. The album then gradually shifts to more distorted production, more break beats, more electronica and a bit more of a paranoid mood as those retro samples and vibes become increasingly ironic and subversive. Love the low end. Favourite tracks: Stay Another Season, Radio, Close To You, Electricity, Frontier Psychiatrist, Etoh, Extra Kings

Some interesting samples but got a bit annoying. “Frontier Psychiatrist” is a great track.

This is not my jam, but I appreciate it anyway.

Since I left you is such a jam- but the remaining samples and songs fall flat for me. Also the disc two remixes- I could do without almost all of them.

Los origines de la música electrónica actual. Muy bien disco para poner de fondo mientras trabajas.

3.5 stars i like the banger tracks the best by far!

Pleasant on the ear but not quite enough so to come back to. Like the coherence of the album but maybe lacks a high. The 6music Moby

An album that is kind of a mixtape? Some songs are nostalgic and really good. Too bad for the on-going sound of the vinyl cracking in the back.

Have to admit I enjoyed it - wasn’t sure I would - dragged a bit towards the end but decent stuff

Some songs are wow, some are repetitive and boring. Depending on my mood I might enjoy listening or get irritated.

Decent

Interesting.

I don't like electeonica at all but this was pretty fun

- auch wenn einige nervige Parts dabei waren, fand ich es allem in allem ganz cool. Viele Experimente dabei, die irgendwie aufgehen

Feels like a DJ spinning at a chill beach party, but the transitions don’t always hit right. The sound is playful, like a mix of Air and Beck. It’s enjoyable, though it doesn’t always hold together as well as it could.

The problem with this kind of album is always the repetitiveness, but that aside, I enjoyed it. I found it worked much better as a soundtrack to a walk than to sitting and working. “Frontier Psychiatrist” was fun. 3.5

repetitive music

Favorite Track: ETOH

The Good: “Since I Left You” instantly makes me feel like I am part of the Avalanches multiverse, as they are talking to me… The Bad: Though I might be part of the multiverse, they are kicking me out The Ugly: Nobody likes being left… Yes, I am unable to be as imaginative with my above, as The Avalanches were with all the samples they used for their opus. And an opus it is… After the second listen to my conclusion is that a) a 10 for effort and creativity b) as background music it is un-intrusive, which is really nice c) at times I felt like being part in a quiz where you’d have to blurt out which actor was saying which line from which movie! Originally I was going to rate this album 1 - 1 1/2 * But they’ve changed my mind… 3 1/2*

Kinda reminds me of RJD2

Int it trippy son

Had a little too much going on in some tracks. The melodies were prtty good but yeah sometimes it felt like a child was given a soundboard. Overall though, not bad

Bizarre, but in a fun way.

Impressively built and shows a rich and varied soundscape. Some of the songs are a bit much. Best Song: Two Hearts in 3/4 Time Worst Song: Flight Tonight

it was really good and pleasant to listen to. But I wont put it on if I wasn't studying.

Listened Before? N A pretty well done electronic album. Not really my cup of tea but as far as mostly instrumental albums go I didn't mind it. A bit reminiscent of Handsome Boy Modeling School with it's heavy media samples. Added to Library? N Songs added to playlist: Frontier Psychiatrist

This was overly long. Interesting enough as background music, but nothing more than that

Repetitive samples are a bit annoying in some songs, cool and vibey in others. Favorite track: Frontier Psychiatrist

Interesting concept

Been digging them for more than 20 yrs - I love the Avalanches!! Australian kings of sampling - it's almost like a journey through their subconscious, how quickly you pass from one to the other. I actually have Since I left You in my collection. However.. 40 min of this can get tedious. They're electronic and not really singing, so I find myself wishing for one of them to start belting it out but alas..

Interesting. It was fine & unique. Would listen to again on drugs.

Buena grabación pero no emociona.

I thought this album was not bad. It was nice background music. I enjoyed the variety of mixes in the music.

Not bad.

Very fun record. All over the map, exploding with creativity. Most of the time I felt I did not know where I was or what was happening. After a while, I become a bit unsettled and disoriented: as if in a room where there is no floor, ceiling, walls. Do I belong to myself?

Quite interesting, I randomly recognised one of these songs but can't remember why

I didn’t know what to expect going in to this one, and it’s not a bad album at all. A lot of sampling, hip hop beats and breaks, mixed with some electronica. It was a pretty cool vibe for the morning while having breakfast, and getting ready. It can get repetitive, which isn’t too annoying, except the album went on a little too long. By the time it got to around 45 minutes I felt like it could have easily been finished, but instead it keeps going for about another 15 minutes. That’s where I finally felt like I had heard enough.

I like the way this album flows, it feels like you're at a party. Unfortunately it's the sort of party where the vibe isn't for me (although I can appreciate how people are having a good time) and I want to go home and watch a film

This album gives me "Sonic Adventure" vibes, and instantly took me back to the early 2000s, sitting in my living room, eating pizza, and playing my Gamecube Nintendo. Other than that brief nostalgic trigger, the album wasn't too impressive. Favorite Song: "Frontier's Psychiatrist"

Wack maar niet verkeerd

Solid enough album, definitely one I can see growing on me. It's one of those weird ones where even after just one listen, I thought it was nothing more than decent, but for some reason I feel like I can predict the future here and I just *know* that it will grow on me. But it isn't the future yet, so I'm going to have to say that it was just ok.

Super interesting. I liked it a lot.

Disco and dance! Fun tracks 'A Different Feeling' and weird video for Frontier Psychiatrist but love that scratching...!

Strange at times but fun overall.

A wild, creative, and mildly disorienting mix of dance(?) music. The whole concept doesn’t totally click with me, and neither do some of the songs, but there are some great moments here. Best song: Frontier Psychologist

Nice production (which is the main appeal of the album) vocals from the samples aren't bad but haven't blown me away or anything, love the seamless transitions. Song are a little boring at times but I can appreciate them. Finding it rlly hard to rate as I probably won't relisten to any of these songs, but they are objectively impressive and interesting for now. Most of these could be samples into the most insane Mf Doom beats holy (Frontier Psychiatrist sounds like one already). One of the only albums I've listened to that gets better towards the end. Overall an enjoyable first listen, but I know this won't have much replay value for me.

An absolute masterclass in sampling but gets kinda repetitive. I don't think it's overrated but not on my personal rotation

Chaos of instruments and sounds and lyrics but I loved it.

groovy

I can see how this is influential, but yeah not for me

This is like the album equivalent of a Baz Luhrmann film, kaleidoscopic, full of mashed up references, a gazillion textures crammed into every frame... Something was in the air in Australia at the time, it seems. I was not at all familiar with this artist, but I read about their creation process, which sounds ambitious and extensive. What they made here seems well done. However, it didn't really grab me, and I found it hard to truly get into it. It didn't have a lot in the way of hooks or emotional depth. It would be good background music, I guess. That's not necessarily a bad thing. But I feel like when it comes to electronic music, I can think of many more albums I would prefer to hear than this.

Dance, pop, sampledelia. Está bien.

It was ok. Lotta noise but some good times too

Interesting electronic visit to the dance club

Funner than the ignorant mylo/beta band contingent. A little less interesting than pauls boutique say in the sampling realm, I like the psychotherapy one, and really anything with lyrical content. More energy than aforementioned electronics but still kinda fades to background. Just did a crossword to occupy my mind during the last few songs.

Crazy that this thing is even good, much less half as great as it is. Walls of Sound

I do not understand the album.

achei bom, o maior pre cursor do lo fi

Not bad for this era. 3/5

i didn't like how it constantly repeated itself. just found it quite boring tbh.

Didn’t hate this, but too long and repetitive to be good. It looks like they had fun making the music video to Frontier Psychiatrist. I wish I could say I had fun listening to it

Listened to the extended anniversary album. Some interesting sounds but long and repetitive

Not heard this for donkeys. It's well done for sure, really decent record to just bang on in the background and not think about it while you get on with something active. The title track is the best thing here by a distance, the rest is entertaining enough, but it's definitely a bit repetitive in places (Flight Tonight is about 3 and a half minutes too long). A lot of it kinda slipped by until Frontier Psychiatrist, which grabs your attention again but definitely is on the novelty record end of the scale. The rest of the record after this slips by just as before, at one point near the end when the Madonna bassline rolled by again I thought it had looped back to the start. Good for audio wallpaper, but not good for music you want to actually listen and engage with.

I really appreciate the craftsmanship of The Avalanches. How every song is woven into the next, how the samples mix and match. It must've taken years to put this together, and only therefore is an album for the ages. It swings, it dances. Only it does so little for me. I think I would want to like this more than I actually do.

Despite not being the type of album that I can take in one sitting, there are two absolute standout tracks here.

A continuous jamming funk/hip-hop beats/R&B album. Not bad, but can get a hair repetitive.

This is not what I was expecting at all. I'm not usually a fan of electronic albums that much, but this one I actually liked a bit. It's a bit longer than I'd like personally but there are a few cool tracks on here. Fav songs: - Since I Left You - Two Hearts in 3/4 Time

Alright

It's not hip hop... it's electro...

I was slightly familiar with this album. I love Frontier Psychologist, both for the intricate mix of dialogue, score, and beats, and because it’s just funny. The title track is pretty good too. The rest of the album kind of blends as interesting techno, but not necessarily something I would find myself humming to myself.

Somehow I never heard this one back in the day...

1. meh/bra, 2. meh, 3. meh, 4. meh, 5. meh, 6. meh, 7. bra, 8. meh, 9. bra, 10. bra, 11. meh, 12. n/a, 13. bra, 14. meh/bra, 15. meh, 16. n/a, 17. banger, 18. meh Mye trekk pga rare og irriterende lyder i mange av sangene. Overall: 6.5/10

I love Frontier Psychiatrist, but the album together felt like overly busy early 2ks. I still enjoyed it, but for the most part I preferred the deluxe edition extra tracks to the original releases.

Not really my kind of music but I can see it’s appeal

I loved their two videos from 20 years ago (Yikes). However, the bulk of the album just seems like random noise. I don’t get it.

Perfect for: background music for an early 2000s themed game night

The sound and overall vibes of the individual songs are great, and each song can easily be dropped into a playlist without breaking the flow. There are a few songs that I knew and liked even before hearing the album. But listening to the album as a whole gets tiring. The flow between the songs is well done, but listening to 60 minutes of samples flowing from one into the other with the same vinyl-scratch-and-pop buzzing in your ear gets too much. I wish I could give half stars; the album would be a 2.5. I'm rounding up instead of down because I like a lot of the songs for themselves, just not as part of the album.

So-so.

Frontier Psychiatrist is a BANGER, and Etoh was pretty great as well. The rest of the songs are kind of plug and play, paint by numbers, generic "electronic" music that I have trouble connecting with.

Too many lyrics

I had a really tough time rating this album. I picked it up and put it down probably 10 times. I think it just has a little to much fluff for me. The top songs are incredible, no doubt. Bu as an entire project I think it's a bit much.

By no means bad... but do not see myself coming back to this one.

I thought the production was cool at first...but got tired of it after the first few songs. 3/5

Had zero expectations coming in, but fun and interesting.

An achievement in sampling as far as that goes. I didn't hate it & grew tired of the repetitiousness less than while listening to Fatboy Slim. Guess that earns a 3.

interesting

This is not what I expected. I thought they were some rock band along the lines of The Strokes. Very pleasantly surprised but I don’t know if it’s intriguing enough to come back to very often.

This feels whimsical and fresh. More of a vibe than something that hits at my soul, but it was a fun and groovy listen. It started off a little meh but got better as the album went on. Lots of fun samples.

Never heard anything by the Avalanches except the silly hit Frontier Psychiatrist. It was some kind of novelty passed around as an mp3 in junior high, and I'd assumed for a long time that the Avalanches were either a one off or a novelty group. The best moments of this album are really good. It's got sections that are too much repetitive dance music for me & that holds it back. (⌐♼_♼)

Definitely a rounding up, based on my taste. Just that here, I can really imagine liking it a lot. But I’m not the guy for liking it a lot.

I didnt particularly disliked it but i didnt reAlly like it either

Albums that rely so heavily on sampling typically feel repetitive and irritating to me. This album was less so.

I went into this knowing the hit song Frontier Psychiatrist, but hadn't listened to anything else. The rest of the album is interesting and intriguing, yet it falls short of the refined chaotic brilliance of the hit.

Before I say anything else, I just need to note that I don't like this genre or style of music. I generally find repetitive electronic music boring and uninteresting. That said, this album does actually do some really interesting things, even if there is a lot of boring repetitions still. Bending of pitches. Manipulations of samples already introduced. Using non-musical samples in musical ways. I didn't love it, but it wasn't offensive to me, like a lot of other electronic/dance albums have been, and there were some occasional really good things happening!

What a great surprise , very chill and pleasant album , like IT

Didn't listen

Pleasant. Maybe overly so... Barely a 3, but a 3.

Good enjoyable fun. How many samples is too many samples? Arguably, it's the amount the Avalanches use every single second of this album, but take nothing away from them, they now how to create complex and interesting songs that also get your feet going. Frontier Psychologist is a great song.

Dig Frontier Psychiatrist. Overall pretty chill and something I never listened to when it released.

I like mix albums in general and the flow of this one is nice. These guys did some great work with the samples and production in general. I remember this album being played a lot the summer before I left Europe; lots of good memories associated with it. It's not groundbreaking and I think it's not nearly as good as some of their genre "Pair of DJ's or one dude making anglo pop dance music" contemporaries (The Chemical Brothers, The Crystal Method, Moby, Fatboy Slim, etc) but it is a fun album. Unchallenging dance music for a good time.

This was a little all over the place. A little techno, a little funk, a lot of wishing they were one of the bigger sounds of the time. I thought it was fine. The music video for Since I Left You involves dancing miners.

oku! 6.5/10

Very danceable and poppy

Knew the hits but hadn't heard the album. Jigsaw puzzle music, fascinating approach but seems like a lot of tedious work.

I remember loving this album as a kid thinking it was so clever. And the sampling is dtill done very well. But the album doesn't resonate with me as well nowadays and I expected to enjoy this more than I did. Frontier Psychologist is still the obvious best song here, but I also liked Two Hearts in 3/4 Time.

I'm a little amazed by how much I dig this. I'm having a similar reaction to this music as I had with The KLF.

Lekker dance sample album chille nummers

Not something I’d probably listen to again but some good stuff here

Not bad, the single Frontier Psychiatrist was a jam back in the day and still is.

interesting...

Not what. I Was expecting. Nice sounds

2.9 - There was some great parts to this album, but it just feels like it's stuck on repeat mostly and drives me insane. I wonder if that's to do with how much I focus on music in general, but struggled with this. However I really loved Frontier Psychiatrist.
