Reviews (page 7 of 7)

Being Irish, I could be biased and rate it high But their music isn't what I'm into, so it's a 2

My Perfect Cousin is the standout track here. When this came out, I had a perfect cousin a little like Kevin. He didn't have a sheepskin jacket, but this song could be about him anyway. Whenever I hear it, I think of my cousin. The rest of the album isn't great, just plodding along punk/pop that all gets a bit samey. Two stars seems a little mean, but it's not quite a 3.

Minus one star for ripping off Talking Heads

There's nothing objectionable here, but it leaves me saying "So what?". Maybe I am ignorant to the historical significance and it pioneered a sound that became common afterwards, but I'm not getting it.

Here and there, there are moments of really good hooks. "Wednesday Week" has a really good riff. "Whizz Kids" was also fun. The rest was bordering to annoying. Sure som of the punk songs were ok but the lows were pretty bad (the "Under the boardwalk" cover particularly sticks). Not really my jam.

Not at all interesting.

Having never heard The Undertones I only had this album cover to go off of. Not gonna lie, it pre-disposed me towards them. And yet, on my second time around the record, I continue to be unimpressed overall. It is perfectly fine pub rock with some hints of a punkier approach to songwriting underneath. But it's also kind of unremarkable listening with over 40 years of history between it and me. I does not strike me as a necessary or vital record when trying to craft a list of 1001 albums one must hear before they die.

i wish i hadnt heard this album. this album does indeed make me go do you have the fucking maturity of a 5 yr old. they seem kinda misogynist. i cannot BELIEVE the last song on the album is that. idk maybe im just a bitch who doesnt have fun but like bro. uhhh anything good at all the last notes of wednesday week (yes ik its generally in the song) and the opening of tearproof. uhh the bit at like 1:54 of 9/10 (and by extension the bit immediately before). opening of girls that don't talk ig. this makes me think that if they had a darker sound and were less fucking annoying i could enjoy it. i think i dont like some of the things they do musically which unfortunately means i should relisten and pull up the stupid fucking sheet music+/ tabs to jot down what they are so special fuck u to the undertones for making me do that 2 bc im sure its crafted perfectly well i just hate it

Early 80’s British rock.

Bass work is pretty good. Otherwise underwhelming. Solid 2.

One-hit wonders and their one hit isn't even on this album. Seriously why are there 2 Undertone albums on this list? You don't even need 2 songs. A few good songs but in general mediocre, uninspired indie punk.

Not my jam. Not bad, just nothing grabbed me.

Doesn’t do anything that really makes me stand up and pay attention. ‘Hypnotised’ is a pleasant enough pop punk record, and it’s fine when it’s on, but it’s just not something I ever see myself seeking out to listen to again.

Painful

I had not heard of the Undertones. Creative lyrics, interesting subject matter, but not 'my lane' of music. I skipped thru most and stopped at "Hard Luck".

Had a few solid moments, just had trouble really getting into the album as a whole.

no favorites to report>_<

This felt very "just fine" to me at first, not anything I'd put on again, but it's really picking up in the second half. Starting with "Wednesday Week", which was great. Probably a 2 for me overall. I wouldnt go out of my way to turn it off, and there were a few good songs, but nothing that really grabbed me.

This may be one of those situations where since this has been released, there’s been so many albums of the same genre released since that are much better. I found this to be generic, boring and uninspired. The humour they were going for, well I just didn’t find it funny. They didn’t lean into the punk or the pop enough and seemed to just play it safe and boring. I’m gonna listen to a Jeff Rosenstock album to wash taste of the Undertones away. 2 stars

Eh, not my jam.

The last song on this album contains an ultra-high frequency that channels the Men in Black memory wipe device and makes you immediately forget everything about this album once it is over. I don't remember anything about this, and I just finished listening. The singer could have been a Bulgarian 80-year old woman for all I know.

I could see how some of these songs might be considered catchy and likable - if they weren’t all on an album together. It’s just repetitive track after repetitive track, and I was over it about a quarter of the way into the album.

Not really a big fan of punk. It was alright.

Reckon I'd have been into this when I was a teenager but it just wasn't really doing anything for me as a grown ass 35 year old woman. I found the vocals a bit grating and some of the songs felt a bit repetitive and lazy (in my opinion). Or maybe I'm just a philistine+

Listen to the first song and you've heard the whole album

18 lyhyttä ja iskevää kappaletta, jotka osoittavat huumorintajun lievää hallintaa, taitoa kasata tarttuvia melodioita ja brittivittuilua joka erottuu rockin tasapaksusta valtavirtatarjonnasta

Didn’t really pay much attention. I did like some songs but overall a 2

Quite sexist, outated lyrics

nondescript with no lasting impression. half the songs are about girls or boys. very weird.

good energy but boring compositions for the most part, some good choruses but the music ends up being mid, but the lyrics are so simple that you pay attention and I kinda like that One of the first time the UK-ness of an artist has put them off, their diction and attitude and all that ends up being repulsive lmao. I normally like anything that seems low-brow like that, but with those lyrics about boys will be boys and girls all the time, its just a bad combo. Maybe I just would not like Irish (punk?)

It was just music? I don’t know how this made the list because it was nothing special, just generic garage music with misogynistic lyrics. I give it 2 stars because it’s listenable, I just don’t want to listen to it.

Algumas doses de diversão via punk.

This wasn’t too bad of an album. I let it play in the background while doing housework and wasn’t inclined to turn it off, so it was alright. Typical 80s radio music, but there were a couple songs that reminded me a lot of Billy Talent! Listen again: probably not Purchase for my collection: no Favourite Song: none stick out to me

Immediately forgot 100% of this album. I don't think it was bad, just had not memorability. Going back for a second listen the next morning. It's kinda fun, like groovy Irish punk?

This album is just fine. Personally, i think that there isn't anything interesting happening here. Maybe If I had listened to this album the year it originally came out I would think it was more unique, but at this point it was just a whatever album. I do like their lobster shirts

Just not a fan

It was fine. 2.5/5

Wasn't really for me this. It took me a while to get through, didn't find it very interesting. On the one hand, that the songs were in general a bit daft I liked, but on the other, it didn't offer anything musically. My favourite song was the cover of Under The Boardwalk. Just a really meh listen.

I am getting sleepy. Very sleepy

Brit pop-rock, nothing too notable

Biisi silloin tällöin voisi toimia, mutta levyllinen putkeen alkaa puuduttamaan. 2,49*

Ei kolahda erityisesti, vaikka ihan vekkulia settiä.

Not very interesting

Skipped through the last few songs. I didn't hate it but only one song I like

Listening to these guys for the first time. Kinda dull and monotonous. And too British for my taste. Fav track is Boys will be boys, but it's nothing too outstanding.

Ammattitaitoisesti melodioihin keskittyvää, mutta valitettavasti melko koukkuja säästelevää rutiinisävellystyötä.

If I had grown up listening to this album I would probably have enjoyed it. As it is, I'm bored and I don't like the singer's voice.

Quite basic punk rock

When I was listening to The Jam last week, I was thinking how much better their songwriting was compared to many late 70s bands, and the first band to pop into my head was The Undertones. Their teenage angst themes sound stale fast - like a 50s band who only sing about surfing and drive-ins and are trying to milk it for all they can. I should give them a 3 because Sharkey and the guitar player are talented but I'm annoyed 1001 would deem 2 Undertones albums worthy

Unremarkable. Dork pop punk.

they share my deepest core principles - girls, teenage dreams, and dumb entertainment unfortunately no grooves get under my skin, and their tones do nothing but bore me

Eh, it was alright I guess. Nothing earth-shattering.

If I were in my teens and had the same taste as then, I would probably like it more

My problem with punk albums is that they all sound the same for the entire runtime, generally. This isn't an exception, but I do like the sound a bit more than other punk albums. It started to drag in the second half. Do all punk singers sing like that? In a lot of the punk albums I've gotten, the singer's voice is shaky. I like it, but it's odd that it's a trend. I didn't really care about this album. My favourite song was See That Girl, I guess.

It had a cool cover of Under The Boardwalk I guess? Also the vocalist gave me Dead Kennedy's vibes but this ain't no Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables

I'm guessing that the selection committee for these albums was mainly old white English dudes.

Not really feeling ti's to be honest

Nothing on this really was exciting for me. I respect that this sound was new in the 80s and that this sound influenced pop punk music of today but instrumentally it feels boring, the mix is horrible (even in the 30th anniversary edition), and lyrically it's cringey. I'll not be revisiting this again. Favorite track - Boys will be Boys Least favorite track - My Perfect Cousin

Chill listen. Nothing really stood out to me. Heavy surf rock influenced, which is cool. Seems like this is more of a summer album. I could see myself revisiting this on a beach day with a few Landsharks. With that being said, I'm usually not too crazy about albums that seem "situational". Decent album though, don't get me wrong. I feel like I would enjoy this more if I was into stuff like Pet Sounds.

Fun kind of English rock

bien ig 6 / 10

rubbish

Pretty fun pop punk, nothing super memorable though - 2.5 stars

hat mir nicht taugt. textlich gar nicht und auch musikalisch nicht besonders.

Meh…

The underwhelming Undertones. They fell into the gap between soft punk and new wave. This isn't a bad album, but it's just very.....forgettable. And whoever came up with the idea for the video for "There Goes Norman" should be flogged.

Some fun, punky songs on this but there are just too many of them. 15 tracks is a bit much, even when they clock in under 40 minutes. There are a few standouts though, even later in the tracklist.

Not as bad as the first, but so many of the songs just feel too simple or underwritten. Not my genre to begin with but it’s compounded by the lack of interest anything in the music. 3/10

Album cover. Is this the worst so far. 0/5 Not as good as their 1st album. Don’t think it is worthy of the list.

(2.5) Alright?

Pretty bland, innit?

I wish it didn't but his voice just grates me. I miss teenage kicks...

Quand même sympathique comme album Je connaissais zéro ce band Trippe pas sur le vibrato chevrottant du chanteur mais c'est pas si dérangeant. Assez simple et to the point. Ça m'a fait pensé à weezer. Les compos sont assez originales mais finissent par se ressembler Pas mauvais mais pas malade non plus

couldn't finish

It was fine.

😴😴😴😴😴😴😴

Far from exciting. A nice album to have on in the background perhaps? But it’s kind of a monotone undertone.

Distinctly British. Rather ordinary, which is part of the charm.

Not my type of genre - but can see how this album is liked

some tasty licks here and there but overall terrible.

It’s not really my thing.

I can Envision the exact type of white boy that would love this album. So in other words I’m going to stay away from it

Get me out of these punk albums.

Indierock, madnessish

I like the singer’s weird voice but the album is repetitive and kind of boring.

CALL APOGEE SAY "AARDWOLF"

unpolished rock. Irish? lead singer

Meh? Its not great. not sure what makes this one of the best albums of all time

Undertones = underwhelming. Probably ahead of the curve for 1980’s ska/pop bands, but seems simplistic and repetitive. Moments of fun do bring it up to a 2.5, but I can’t bring myself to give this three stars. Crabby old man strikes again!

Lacks any sort of substance in the lyrics, mostly just repeating the same words over and over. Chorus in most songs is just a phrase repeated.

Buen disco, muy agradable rock clasico pero no hard, muy the clash, canciones ligeras, buen sonido

Low quality songs

Pretty good album. Bit skater-y. Almost like the Beastie Boys.

singer kiiiind of sounds like the panic at the disco guy lol. oh can't stand it when they sing in unison. music sounds okay, repetitive though. i'm bored.

punk bejzik, veoma 2/5

Annoying voice and forgettable lyrics.

Highly overrated- passable noise

Quite a boring album. Lyrics were meh and musis seemed repetetive.

Original class of pop punk. Best Tracks: More Songs About Chocolate and Girls, There Goes Norman, My Perfect Cousin

It was ok, it didn't really grab me but there was some decent songs on there 2*

Meh was OK

Top Top cover. Shit Irish band trying to copy a shit American band. Like it when my punk bands have a bit more to say then this. 2/5

Second Undertones album generated in 3 days. Not as fun or bouncy as the last one. Only 38 minutes long, but still managed to bore me a bit.

Not really my style

I must dislike punk

Eh, it's fine.

Some nice bouncy pop-punk but mostly doesn't really grab me.

Catchy 80's pop punk. Didn't finish.

Not bad. Had some alright tracks.

It's like...some songs start super cool, like Hard Luck...and then they fade quickly, like Hard Luck. Oh well.

A few high points, but the style references wear a bit thin. Does much to reinforce the theory that Irish bands sound better with the accents.

Kind of dumb and not very interesting. Felt like one continuous track aside from ‘There Goes Norman’ which was a fun little detour. Whereas listening to The B-52s and understanding the kitsch of it all, this didn’t feel like it had a personality. This is maybe the first album I’ve struggled with understanding its place in the list.

never heard this before. interesting how it sounds so far ahead of it's time. not for me though.

What a stupid, annoying album. I feel like two dorks in dumb bibs are rambling nonsense to me from across the dinner table - constantly reminding me that "boys will be boys" and "girls will be girls" for some reason. 1.3/5 -> 1/5

Esse eu não ouvi.

Schrippischrappi. Bla bla. Etwas albern

Didn't like this at all

Trash pop

This might be the most embarrassing album on this list. I'd wager even the members of The Undertones don't know why they're on this list.

Not my style of music at all. Was never a fan of the 1980s era British punk sound or scene.

nothing special about it

Another annoying mouthpiece of the Israeli Government. Wait, you're telling me they're just British Rock'N'Roll artists?

1/5 Had high hopes from the album cover and name, but unfortunately didn’t deliver like i expected it to.

It was okay.

135/1089 this genre of music just isn’t a bit of me, lyrically, instrumentally or vocally… Under The Boardwalk in particular was quite annoying i appreciate that the songs are mostly shorter and to the point, Wednesday Week is the most bearable along with What’s With Terry? 18/100

A few mildly catchy riffs, but why does every song have to be about teenage kicks?

Not for me. 1/5

I’m curious

Lyder lidt som noget musik man har hørt før, men man har ikke hørt det før, lidt meh tsk

Oof not for me

so unbelievably boring

(1/5) Not really my flavor. Fun "Under The Boardwalk" cover.

Why is this here? Moderately successful British pseudo punk? I'd give it a 2 for just not being abjectly horrid, but the warble is just too cringe. And the lyrics? This sounds written by my tweenager.

Underwhelmed by The Undertones. Seemed like completely pedestrian punk rock. Maybe I would feel differently if I grew up listening to their stuff, but I can’t recover whatever it is that made them special.

?? naja Nord-irische band pre-pop-punk. c

Opening track is better than the entirety of their first album. It goes downhill from there. 1 star

idk dude

Just doesn't grab me, tried a few times

wtf why does it sounds like the beatles with the television wtf? sounds like mom jeans with something else idk it sounds annoying quickly ngl why is it so fucking repetitive i hate the vocals tf i fucking hate it

Absolutely not my jam

Ok alters and. No recognizable music.

Come on. This stuff is NOT something anyone needs to listen to

80s British power-pop is boring. Fight me.

Extremely not into this. The songs are structured well but I do not see much value in actually listening to this. The intro riff sounded like the Backyard Baseball OST.

Boring. Repetitive. Way too long. 2/5

Wow this was bad

Nothing really that good.

This just wasn’t it for me. Not a terrible album but I have no desire to listen again.

Not their best album but was a nostalgic listen

The Undertones - Hypnotised Yea... This isn't for me. I get that they were the pioneers of this genre they were doing, but it just sounds the same. Nearly every song here feels the same. I'm not complaining about "some" of the lyrics here, but most of them sound pretty dull by comparison. There are like 3 or even 4 good songs on here, most of them are just the same thing like said, very repetitive with very few ideas to bring on the table. Hell, even The Clash were able to make punk music better than them a year earlier with London Calling... 1.- More Songs About Chocolate and Girls = 5/10 2.- There Goes Norman = 6/10 3.- Hypnotised = 5/10 4.- See That Girl = 6/10 5.- Whizz Kids = 6/10 6.- Under the Boardwalk = 7/10 7.- The Way Girls Talk = 4/10 8.- Hard Luck = 6/10 9.- My Perfect Cousin = 7/10 10.- Boys Will Be Boys = 4/10 11.- Tearproof = 5/10 12.- Wednesday Week = 6/10 13.- Nine Times Out of Ten = 7/10 14.- Girls That Don't Talk = 5/10 15.- What's With Terry? = 6/10 FINAL SCORE: 5.6/10

Dull, boring.

Shut off after My Perfect Cousin

Just Wasn't happening.

feels a little bloated and repetitive. i guess i dont understand why this album made this list because it is just fine with absolutely nothing new to provide. the old material it recycles is not particularly my taste anyway

Boring. Music for boomer men. Didn't mind the one about a guy called Norman though, but only because I have a kitten called Norman.

I wasn't hypnotised by this :(

joo eiköhän ole aika selvää naamalärveistä, kotimaasta ja vuosiluvusta että mitä vitun katastrofaalista ripulia on tulossa... vittu vihaan iso-britanniaa niin vitusti. tämmöset pitää laittaa riviin ja vittu litistää kunnes on kuollut. miten helvetissä porukalla on näin alhaiset standardit... good bass work... mitä vittua selität? musiikki on paskaa!!! 1.00 pitäisi olla average. imekää piliäni kusipäät. seitsemään sataan ja yhteentoista melkein jäi homma siihen.. niin saatanan lähellä että koko touhuun laitetaan nyt stoppi.. mitää VITUUUUUA. ja niillä on jo yksi albumi takana voi hyvä luoja. ette vittu laita ylläpito lisää tätä under the boardwalk

just skipped through, not my thing

Day 26 - June 27, 2024 I fucking hate punk. 1/5

I had come into this record having heard their debut, and having come away from that record wanting more complexity/songcraft, I thought their second effort would be much improved. I'm sad to report that I didn't enjoy this record as much as I thought I would. None of this album's 15 tracks offer much to remember it by, and the production is worse than the debut, in my opinion. It's just not a memorable record, 1 star.

Sounds like a local bar band that kind of has their shit together.

I kinda wonder if maybe I just don't get new wave? I have seen debate on if The Smiths are new wave or not, but I don't get them (at least not the album I got so far on this list). I just barely got the B-52s and I think that is just because I was already just a little familiar with them. Anyway, I feel a little bad giving them a 1 star because I really didn't hate them, but I also just did not get anything from this.

Hard Luck was okay. The rest was the rest.

Not a big punk fan, but I liked the singer

You never know if you're going to get godlike or crap when you see weird album covers like this. But something made my spider sense tingle, and this time it was definitely the latter. There wasn't anything technically wrong with the album really, but more that it was 0% musically interesting to me. I initially thought I had found originators of 'Under the Boardwalk', but nope. This was just a sucky version. After finishing it felt like a 2 star, but the more I thought about it I realized I didn't like anything with it, so 1 star felt more fitting.

Holy.... this album was so long that I could barely go through the whole thing, it took 45 minutes to go through the whole thing (well, I took break, so it took me a few hours). It's not bad but the whole thing sounded like a very generic album, which could've been fine for its time but it was too much for me. It started off alright but by the end, I had already understood their whole thing. The most exciting feeling that I felt today was when I realised that the album had ended.

I'm going to make a point in saying that a 1 on this website in particular is not bad every time, but sometimes its just me saying "This album is just alright and I don't think it belongs in the 1001". Hypnotised is a good listen for someone who follows the history of The Undertones sonic development but anyone looking for a cultural touchstone may find it more difficult to latch onto than their self-titled. Songs are less poppy, lyrics are sardonic but still a bit cutesy. The melodies don't land as well here.

I've never enjoyed this type of music.

Favorites: none Not my thing

Late 70's British Pop, no thanks.

Feo feo

Not for me. The voice is too warbly and the music doesnt excite me. Sorry

I do not like this album. Let me explain why. The sound of the album is just kind of okay. It is passable early 80s punk rock. The bass is good at times. The singing is fine. It does nothing for me, but it's not inherently bad. Those are the positives. I don't like anything else. This might just be the most repetitive album I've ever listened to. Why does there need to be 15 songs if they all sound the same? All of these songs are practically the same thing, both in terms of sound and lyrics. Three of songs (20%) have the phrase "Boys will be boys", including a song of the name "Boys Will Be Boys". That should tell you what this album is like. Most of the songs are just about girls. That's it. I couldn't discern anything else! This album has absolutely no lasting impression; not just on me, but on culture as a whole. This album does not deserve to be on this list. I. Don't. Like. It. 1/5.

Not my fave, I can tell that it’s creative but honestly it just sounds like a couple of high school boys coming up with noise in the basement for me

…What are we even doing here, man. I'm on an educational journey here when it comes to punk and punk-adjacent, but you can't show me groups up to actually interesting stuff (X-ray Spex, for example) and then expect me to be interested in something that's this tepid.

🤷‍♂️

Why do you do this to me 1001 albums

What the f@&$ is this?

Not my thing

Didn’t wow me and I’m kind of over all the punk on this list. Good bass though.

This was so annoying I didn’t finish it lmao

i get it it’s 1980 but can you stop singing about how you hate women for like 2 seconds.

If I ever have to listen to this album again, I will turn the volume up so high in hopes that I go deaf before too long Although I was quite upset when I listened to this so maybe it deserves another one day

Uninspired, sounds like every other 80s punk album in existence.

09/07/2022 Here’s the deal: I’m super picky about music that sounds like this. For the most part, I hate all this weird 80s pop punky shit. The dead kennedys are probably the only exception that I can immediately think of. But yeah, this album was severely lacking in just about everything for me. Felt no compulsion to listen to it all the way through bc the songs all sounded the same to me. — Today was fine. I looked cute today and studio was sooo long. We got assigned our first project, which I’m not nervous about, but am worried about how I’m going to navigate my other classes while doing work for this class. It begins….

boring album...

I'm not a fan 1 "Wednesday Week" was good

Du punk pas punk, avec un cover pas bon.

1980. Hypnotised

Didn't finish this one. It's bland, uninteresting British punk without a lot of energy to it. Not my taste.

Not sure how this made it on the list.

So bad

Really don't like his voice, the sound or the songs

Catchy toxic masculinity. I made it to the song boys will be boys.

could not get through the whole album

Well, can you name one song by the Undertones? Maybe "Teenage Kicks?" This album has 2 songs that some people listen to. This is pedestrian power-chord rock with an unusual vocalist. Generally forgetful.
