Not a style that I think I need to listen to do before I die. 80s punk - music is simplistic and predictable. listening to the one album is enough for me.

Much better than I had expected it to be!

I liked this album-good songs

This was an unexpectedly fun album! Saved the first song and under the board walk which I swear I’ve heard before somewhere. Just your classic British rock album but it was short and sweet.

I like this one quite a bit. Maybe my favorite of the punk records that we've had on the list so far. The vocals are fun, the riffs and melodies are consistently pretty good. I didn't pull too many tracks away, but as an album it definitely works well. Favorite tracks: The Way Girls Walk, There Goes Norman, Wednesday Week. Album art: Hilarious. Two cheeky lads at Red Lobster? Smile for the camera, mum wants to snag a pic. 3.5/5

I think it's a high 3. Standout being My Perfect Cousin, as the "I've heard this one a million times" if this album. Generally pleasant but not banging enough to earn a 4, but just misses.

Pretty fun aside from some incel vibes.

It's pretty bland but not an unpleasant listen. A pretty generous 3 mics, might've been a 2 on a bad day. Under the Boardwalk is the highlight.

Decent album.

Punk beats and a warble! I can feel the angst!

Eh, it was a fun album, but there wasn't much about it that sounded different than any other punk band (including contemporaries). I hear that later albums branched out a bit more, but I haven't gotten a chance to listen to those albums. I'd say 2.5 rounded up to a 3.

cool upbeat punk album, but got a bit boring because all the songs sounded the same.

Not bad, but kinda bland.

Good album. Kind of average but good to listen

Better than I expected. Ended up enjoying this a reasonable amount, though I probably won't be itching to listen to it again any time soon.

Brand spanking new to me. Never heard of the band, the album, the lobster bibs until this very moment. Enjoyable, warrants repeat listens. Nice "Under The Boardwalk" cover. Good power pop, similar to "Get The Knack" by the Knack and some of the better songs by The Raspberries (speaking of which, looking for both on the list).

I get it, but not for me

overall thoughts: there were like a couple songs I could maybe come back to like hypnotised, hard luck, & wednesday week. I like the high energy kinda punk vibe to their sound, tho not too crazy bout the lyrics. pretty silly vibe to their writing & very high-schooley if that's a word lmao. OK album, don't think it's trash tho just not my cup of tea. I give it a 3/5.

Sounded like Tilt at times, pretty good.

Some really catchy songs on this.

This has a Dead Kennedys meets a new wave Beatles sort of vibe. Nothing really stood out to me. I do appreciate the Northern Ireland representation :D

As a prime example of more approachable punk music that would lay a template for future pop-punk and ska revivals. The Undertones even bring in covers of classic stand-by's, a hallmark of the genre.

Finally some punk! I'm familiar with their first album ("Teenage Kicks" era), but never went any further. The first album is a decent early example of pop punk, with some of the sneering energy of punk mapped onto catchy songs about girls. I'm not a huge fan of the band, but I can see why that one made the 1001 list. This follow-up album has a more precise, controlled sound with less punk edge - so it's crossing further into "power pop", and parts of it have a hint of retro 1960s pop rock. It's pretty competently done, and I quite like the singers voice, which has a slight vibrato when he occasionally holds a note. However, the song writing is boring and the tracks get samey. I've never massively liked the first album, and I like this one a little less. From Buzzcocks to The Jam, there are so many bands that do a similar thing much better. Even staying in Northern Ireland, Stiff Little Fingers - Inflammable Material (1979) would be more deserving of a place on the list. So to me, it's unfathomable that The Undertones get two spots on the 1001 list. Presumably just because John Peel liked them.

This was okay.

Fun listen made me happy

This was a decent album but not one I’d really return to all that much. Shades of Arctic Monkeys in there at times.

It was nice enough but ultimately a little uninteresting. 5/10

Good fun.

No teenage kicks but some fun tunes, especially the first half of the album

Like belle and sebastian’s bratty younger brother

Fun, zips along at quite a pace....but i probably won't return to it

This was a good album. Nice to hear punk ditties with accomplished musicians. Well produced and does well to conjure an image of how young lads think. Loses a star for terrible under the boardwalk cover

This album is strange because sometimes it sounds like a bad Beatles imitation and sometimes it remembers me something of green day in their good days. At least, is a curious album

never heard of these dudes before. They sound kind of like pansy division. Fun light hearted punk. Doesn't feel like "before you die" music, but an enjoyable listen.

Solid 3.5 album, can sound very samey though

Pretty fun album, some of the lyrics dethrone tunes from being better

Simple punk rock and a little bit of pop album, liked it but nothing special, only the vocals stood out

Energetic. 5/10

I was only able to listen to about half of this, but the stuff I did listen to was a solid fine

It's a fine album, but I really don't see why it was included on the list.

I had to remind myself whether I actually listened to this yesterday, so i guess that says it all. Its not bad, just sort of forgettable.

Great album. Didn't know two goofy-ass looking dudes could drop such great music. Excellent, fun rock-n-roll, the way it's meant to be played.

Not bad but I’m not a huge fan of the lead singer. Just preference.

feisty.

Loved his voice!

Some cracking tracks, always really good snappy hooks. But quite a lot of filler tracks that sound like a 14 year old wrote them. And what were they thinking with the under the board walk cover...told you so, my perfect cousin, there goes Norman are the standouts

Cool. Eighties feel. You could tell the punk scene was just starting

light soft rock - good bg music but weak on vocals

Fav Song: The Way Girls Talk

Pretty good album. Nice riffs, cool bass. Everything is good but nothing mind blowing 3.5

Standard stuff. Maybe if I was a teenager in 1980 this would be exciting for me, but I’m not so it ain’t.

Peppig, spritzig, toller 80er Jahre Sound!

Fun if a little juvenile. Last song was the album save for me.

Good fun

Didn't listen in full

Definitely a fun album, about as raw as it gets

girls!

Just about every song had a really catchy hook, with solid british rock vocals. About every song had the name of the song as part of their hook. All instrumentals were really solid, and could be listened to by themselves. There are a few songs in there that did not have much in terms of lyrics other than the hook. I liked this album more than I thought I would.

I like one song from the Undertones and after listening to this album, I still only like one song from the Undertones.

It was meh

Probably sounded good in 1980. Sounds like like very safe punk, or a more punky power pop. It's pretty light and non-threatening, which is fine. Like, it's good to not be threatening as a person or a group of people, like totally preferred honestly. But when your music is loudly advertising just how utterly non-threatening you are, I don't know...it gives nice guy vibes. This is like nice guy music for dudes in the early 80s. It's like The Jam but super-sterilized. Not even sure why it's here. Quite forgettable.

Early Brit-punk album that never really got off the ground for me. Some okay songs and doesn't drag on, but failed to capture my interest for more than a few moments at a time. Top tracks: Wednesday Week

Too close to Dead Kennedy's but not near as good

Tytöt sitä tytöt tätä yap yap yap. Ei mun juttu. Mutta ei mahoton.

Favourite Songs: Hard Luck

I'd rather not listen to an off brand gel dessert.

Would've been 3 stars, but that Under the Boardwalk cover was actually a crime.

An assortment of kind of pop rock with maybe some punky or garage-rock tones. I didnt love it- songs were all similar in subject and sound, and no real standouts hits. Overall- fine, 2.5/5, not quite a 3

Pretty meh album

Kind of dumb

Eh, I feel like this should be a huge hit for me but I am not really about it. I love the album cover though. 2.5/5

Alright. Not the first Clash-lite album/band/artists on this list.

That was pretty banal.

I love me some 70's/80's UK punk, but this one misses the mark in pretty much every way possible. They have "a sound", sure, but that sound is not really catchy, not really energetic, not really clever, not really fun at all, and occasionally even rather grating. Give me The Clash, XTC, The Jam, Wire etc. any day of the week over even the best song of this album.

Hadn't heard this before. A bit of fun. High 2s.

Relatively boring vanilla punk that I may have enjoyed as a ten year old. Some high points, but few and far between.(the last 40 seconds for example) 1.5

For whatever reason, I've never been able to get into this particular sort of punk-y sound. The instrumentation is pretty repetitive and unmemorable -- all the songs kind of blur into one. Not a huge fan of the vocals. The themes covered feel pretty surface level. (Based on my research it seems this band liked to stay out of politics, which I find disappointing, especially for an IRISH band within the PUNK umbrella, though I suppose people are allowed to make whatever music they want.) Not unpleasant to listen to, just underwhelming overall.

Best Songs: There Goes Norman

This album is really fun, but I find the main singer's voice annoying.

Unwichtig.

Mid Punk album; that vibrato is out of control annoying. Under the boardwalk cover shoulda gone under to sleep with the fishes.

If I'd heard this at 16 it would have blown my mind, but now not so much. It's catchy and has some interesting moments, but way too long, and everything here has been done better by other bands. Listen to Buzzcocks or DEVO instead.

Just kinda mid

The album feels 50s. Happy go lucky but also naive. A simple time with primary colors and a cookie cutter experience.

Hooks, humor and apprehension. A good distraction from until it's not. 2.5

Weak sauce

yeah idk

In terms of sound, this is like a full album of the least good REM songs. Aside from that the lyrics are pretty juvenile and make it feel like it's pandering to a teenage audience to sell records. I don't particularly care for it, but it's not actively bad

i am not hypnotised

So far it's not really exciting. I mean, it's kinda nice but nothing is staying with me as I'm listening to it. The preformenses has some nice energy and groove. It's a fine rock album. But nothing exciting. As it progressed it felt really long although it's a relatively short album (12 is my favorite here) I won't be going back to it. Kind of a flat 2

I love the wiki page that says this is noted for being musically more sophisticated than their debut. FFS what were they playing, a toy xylophone and triangle on that one?! This is by far the least sophisticated music we’ve had in 500 albums. Only saved by Feargal having a decent voice. It is what it is, a bang average 6th form band.

This album received some reasonable reviews, not by me! I thought it was a bit gimmicky and juvenile (probably the point of the album, but this was missed by me!) I liked the album cover.

Pretty dull

Disappointed with this. Too same-y and much better punk/new wave out there.

Fun for sure and they’re self aware right from the first song. Don’t feel that strongly towards the album however.

This album was very fun, and lighthearted. It was so refreshing to listen to an Irish band from the 80’s who wasn’t so serious and full of themselves. (I wonder who he is referring to?)

High‑energy and catchy, but the speed and surface‑level vibe keep it from delivering the depth or emotion I usually connect with.

Extremely mid "i'm just a boy girls suck" music- just made me want to hear the Buzzcocks instead.

This is the soundtrack to a movie in the 80s where the nerdy kid gets hot because they got contacts instead of glasses and the braces came off.

1: Wednesday Week 2: Boys Will Be Boys 3: My Perfect Cousin

It's sort of like a big Mac. It's fine, but there's a world of food I'd prefer.

18 two and a half minute pop songs (on average) by a bunch of lads from Derry. There's not much "punk" about this though. Totally insubstantial.

Mild post-punk, similar but not as cool as the Ramones. 2/5

Well, the album cover gets a point from me. Creepy yet funny. I’m hearing a bit of The Clash in this. Nah, this is play it safe pop punk. Middle of the road, near the end of the so so pack.

The Undertones are musically and lyrically OK, but I just can't get on with Feargal Sharkey's high pitched warbling singing. I know it's distinctive and probably what others like but it's not for me.

Very 80's

At first I felt like the sound was kind of outdated, but by the second half of the album it had grown on me and become more charming. Still, it does feel a bit repetitive throughout and there was not really any standout songs

I have to say, I did not enjoy this album. Wiki said it's punk......it is not punk. It's all new wave. It is so new wave, that I thought it was some hidden band with Elvis Costello singing and I instantly hated it. I hated it. I really hated the stupid electrocution vibrato of the singer, Feargal Sharkey. Yes that is his real name. I'm giving it a 2 because it was catchy enough and it wasn't actually Elvis Costello, but they probably deserve a 1 for attempting to emulate him.

It’s always such a bummer when summary and reviews of an album imply it might be right up my alley and then it just. Isn’t.

Pretty unique, too pop to be punk, and vice versa. Overall found this to be pretty middle of the road, not something I can see myself running back to. And too many songs.

I never thought I would call something "too dumb for power pop". Maybe incel anthems were just cuter in 1980, but I was entertained the whole time, and even checked out their debut. But, yes, the charm wears thin quickly and I can't imagine revisiting this.

quite the set of nothing-burger tracks, innit?

Thought I’d like this more

“Hypnotized” is a professional but otherwise unremarkable punk pop album. Feargal Sharkey is a pretty good singer, the band doesn't just strum chords, and the production is fine. But what The Undertones lack are good songs or truly inspiring ideas. It sounds like a music school band that is professionally coached but stands for nothing. Irrelevant.

A 2 because I enjoyed the first song or two. But then it was straight meh.

This sucks nothing remarkable whatsoever

Gear: ZMF Bokeh Closed Artwork: 🍽️🦞😬 Production: 🎧😐🆗 Music: 🏃‍➡️🧱💥 Rating: 😵‍💫😵‍💫/5

An album of mediocre pop punk that is undistinguishable from hundreds of other bands. The one positive is the heavy influence of the band Sparks.

Okay? I guess?

Not bad but not sure if listen to again

Their second album. Pop Punk. Pretty average. I was soon bored and it's not even a long album. I didn't like the Under The Boardwalk cover either. Overall a bit dull.

The fact that there are two albums by this band tells me all I need to know about this stupid list. That said this is more refined and more well produced. And longer. They clearly have their own sound now. But I don't think any of that actually makes for a better album. Another meh for me

Pop-punk, new wave, Dead Kennedys, Dead Milkmen. Just no teeth. Like none. Kinda dumb.

Meh punk album. None of the "lightning in a bottle" magic from the Teenage Kicks single.

The songs are pretty dumb, but they probably knew that. Solid execution. Not for me.

Didn't finish the album, the warbly vocals very much didn't do it for me.

Poppy, punky, nerdy garage rock… It’s fine, 2 stars.

Eh, it's ok. No issue with the music. But nothing stood out - just bog standard punk rock.

just boring.. the two blokes on the album cover look like kids from school that I would have avoided.....

Pretty underwhelming album. Not a lot of defining songs, and it was pretty monotone to me for most of the listen. I actually really liked the last song on the album, but otherwise it was pretty meh

Kudos for including a bit of post-punk on the list. Unfortunately, it’s nothing to shake much of a stick at.

This band sounded almost exactly like I imagined they would, even though I have never heard them before. The one surprising thing, however, was the flavor of sixty’s rock mixed with new wave. They almost hooked me but not quite.

Just not sure why this was included. It’s not bad but it’s not awesome either.

This album is a roller coaster for me. Some songs I enjoy and find to be fun, others I find to be boring and tired. It weirdly inconsistent for me. It does fit the new wave sound well though.

This album is like playing hide and seek in a mirror maze with your friends. You’re having fun, but there’s a frantic undertone and you are scared of being caught.

Why is this album here? Nothing on Wikipedia suggests it belongs on this list. The music is fine, I just question why I "must" listen to it. What great album was sacrificed to make room for this one?

It's good to know that not all music on this list is amazing or awful. Didn't love this, didn't hate it. Just a pleasant listen. I don't understand why we need 2 albums of these guys on the list though? Surely we just need the debut that has the hits on it?

Fav: Under The Boardwalk Least Fav: Hypnotised Couple of good songs in a sea of mediocrity

Wouldn’t be made if someone were to throw this on. But after listening to it yesterday I can’t recall a single thing about it. 2.5/5

This was decent until it hit the very unfortunate cover of Under The Boardwalk. Yikes. I recommend checking out "True Colours" by Split Enz instead for your 1980 post punk new wave fix.

Started off Meh…. then got worse.

The album is ok. I’ve never been the biggest fan of The Undertones. Their music just feels bland.

Formulaic. Sterile. Forgettable. 1.5 stars

Boys music for boys. Not in the mood. Terrible lyrics. They're lucky I'm not giving it 1 star. - 90s beach boys? - Clearly the authors of this list love casual whimsical white boy music. bet Weezer is their favorite band. There's a big reward for 'witty' 'satire' lyrics over real emotional music. What a waste (clearly I'm cranky)

Not my favorite for sure, and I really disliked their version of "Under the Boardwalk" but a 2 star album for me.

Quite goofy and weird. Short and snappy songs. Some of the lyrics are creepy…

This album did very little for me. First few songs sort of ok, but went downhill quickly!

During the time when Feargal Sharkey was their singer, The Undertones put out a stellar string of singles, from their beloved debut track "Teenage Kicks" all the way through their 1986 swan song "Save Me". Their albums, however, are much spottier affairs, and *Hypnotised* is no exception. It's fifteen tracks worth of competent pop-inflected punk that's just a little on the ordinary side, with only a few tracks like "Tearproof" and "Wednesday Week" standing out from the pack (and pointing the way towards the more "pure pop" direction the band would pursue after this album).

Jittery fun for a Friday afternoon .

2- Stars (4/15)

Best Song: My Perfect Cousin. How lovely, a song about me. Worst Song: See That Girl. What an obnoxious rhythm. Overall: Yet another mediocre (at best) album that's inexplicably included on a list of only 1001 albums to hear before I die. It is incredible to imagine the mountain of creative works that were left off this list to make way for another forgettable UK band.

Another one that has no business being on the list. Best thing about it is that it's short.

"Soft" Punk is the best term I can use. Not bad, not good... best things the cover art.

Blando non lo ricordo nemmeno

Relatively uneventful, but it’s kinda hilarious, that every british band seems to have at least one song, that is so very clearly inspired by the Beatles. This time it’s "Wednesday Week". Probably the best song on the record, for that matter.

Maybe I’m missing the point, but I think it’s weird that the entire album is trying to get at some teenage nostalgia.+1 for some tight instrumentals, but I thought the vocals were annoying and i was happy when this one was done.

favs: - more songs about chocolate and girls - under the boardwalk

My perfect cousin is cool shoutout Kevin lol !!! Ive always been luke warm on the undertones and this album didn’t do much to change my opinion…

Old school 70s UK rock and rollish type thing. Not my jam and his constant trilling when he sings is meh. Some bops but a one time listen mostly.

Fun, but disposable punk rock with some new wave leanings. The singer’s distinct warble can be a bit grating.

Thr Undertones are a band I will happily listen to on the radio when they come on, but i wouldn't chose to listen to a full album. After doing so, I haven't changed my mind.

Zzzzzzz Nota: 2.0

I wasn’t a big fan of this

Very very samey

It's not bad, but I think I got the point across by listening to one Undertones records. We didn't really need this second one.

Not good. Not that bad either, but definitely not good. 1001 ways to say you like girls

This didn’t do much for me. There are better examples of punk from this time period. I was underwhelmed by the Undertones. 2⭐️

not my thing

Really pedestrian 80s sound with dumb lyrics and indistinguishable tracks.

80s rock with some 90s hints.

Gotta be one the best albums with two guys eating lobster on the cover?

This 1001 endeavor is funny because one day you’re listening to To Pimp a Butterfly and the next day you’re listening to some random, nondescript British band where I can only assume some of the band members are relatives of the original list author.

Some good. Some same same

Fine effort. Listenable. Never rose above background for me. 2 stars just because I’m becoming a harder grader with 1001 classic albums. Below average for those, not for all albums ever.

Listened Before? N Did we really need MULTIPLE Undertones records on this list? I think not. This one is basically the same as their first one. Stuttery post-punk with goofy lyrics. Meh. Added to Library? N Songs added to playlist: My Perfect Cousin

Fun but not ground breaking, up tempo, almost a little surf rocky in sound

A couple of songs may be a 3, but overall a 2.

It is a repetitive pop-punk fun with whiny vocals, catchy melodies and riffs while being far from a unique sound.

2 sterne

If I stumbled into a bar in northern Ireland in the early 80's and these guys were playing I probably would have loved them. Today, this album feels like it's made up of 20 tv commercial jingles. The guitar sounds like it's played through a tiny amplifier and the goofy, quirky lyrics can only go so far. Don't doubt their sound was an influence on bands I love now, but this album didn't do it for me.

At least they're having fun eating. ⭐⭐1/2

I have never heard of them, but it's pretty good. Not too aggressive, easy to listen to. Seems like nice lyrics and music. Kind of popish rock. It's not something that I regret listening to but I probably won't listen again even though it's not bad. There is just so much in this genre.

Not for me

I mean it's okay, but got boring and repetitive very quickly.

Not a fan of this one. Felt boring and the voices were grating at times.

It might as well have been one 38 minute song to me.

The warbly voice is a bit much. Don't mind the new wave 80's sound but the vocals are a no for me

Second album by them this month. Still just can’t stand this guy’s voice!

decent enough fun , wouldn’t listen again

pretty unremarkable and occasionally annoying

not impressed at all.

My Perfect Cousin is a great song. Rest sound to similar for me. Was gonna give 3 stars, but marking one down for Under The Boardwalk cover 2/5

It’s fine. Nothing overly interesting, but nothing bad either. 2/5 Probably won’t listen again

Apon first listen to this album. I'm not sure how I felt about it. Not a fun fan of the singer and lyrics. The whole album felt odd to me. Strange album artwork too

Mediocre power pop. About two or three decent songs.

Yet another UK centric 1001 inclusion that makes no sense in the broader picture. So many more worthy possibilities.

A+ cover art. Some interesting elements of punk in this but still somehow bland.

tolerable. barely.

I just felt bored listening to it.

It's ok, but not by far a life-changing album that I'd hold onto beyond this listen.

Andrebbero durissimo se fossero in Phineas e Ferb

This was kind of fun but it was unexceptional punk/pop at best. There's a lot of same-y songs and by the half way point I was getting bored with it. I also found the lead singer's vibrato to be pretty annoying.

One of those albums where I don't have anything to nitpick, but after listening don't have any moments from the album I remember. Bang average.

bleh. probably a 3 star album but it got so boring after 15 minutes i can’t give it anything above 2. one good thing about finishing this project is that i’ll stop having to listen to punk

Ehh it was lien soft core English grunge. Not my cup of tea

There goes Norman, indeed.

Okees New Wave Album.

Not exactly ‘Blundertones’ but having this on the list is definitely a bit of a bungle. Really ordinary. Not catchy enough to be pop. Not cool enough to be punk. Ugly cover. Their one great track Teenage Kicks isn’t on here and apparently not on their other 1001 album (???) and I don’t even like the song that much. Maybe the debut is a more legitimate entry but certainly not this. A bit sad that the best thing by miles is an average cover of Under The Boardwalk.

I think one Undertones album is quite enough for this list. We get the idea, Feargal!

This was fine, but not very exciting. Even for what it is, it feels undercooked. Musically my favorite was Girls That Don't Talk, but the lyrics are dumb. Even not taking them seriously because that's not what kind of album this is, I still think they are dumb. I randomly chose the song that would go on my playlist - What's With Terry. But then I read the lyrics. Damn, what a mean song. Wow, writing this I'm realizing I strongly dislike this album. I'll stop here before I drop to 1 star, because surely that's unfair.

I failed to find this music in any way hypnotic; it was serviceable but not an album I would ever see myself seeking out again.

I don’t care for it

meh. Forgettable

its aight

boring punk

off-brand beetles put on eyeliner and tried to be punk(?)

Not for me

The Undertones? More like... bad!

Hard to be mad at this because these guys seem to be having an earnest good time playing short, punchy songs about teenaged love (including a cover of "Under the Boardwalk"). There's plenty of Ramones-style punk and at times they reminded me of The Who in their early days (there were flashes of The Beatles too). But the album was a bit repetitive for me and I found myself checking to see how many track were left.

Total dorks but totally cool with it.

Not horrible and catchy to a point.

Just a fun listen. I didn't like the weird shaky thing on the vocals.

I just dont want music like this anymore dude 😭 it’s starting to piss me off so i wanna rate everything low. It just all sounds like the same type of old music

I find the vocals quite annoying and really dislike the take on Under the Boardwalk. 1.5

could i write poetry to this? n

Me : Mom, can we have The Dead Kennedys? Mom : We already have The Dead Kennedys at home. The Dead Kennedys at home :

Mid 80s punk rock straight in the forgettable field of my mind.

A little too punk rock for my taste, but not an unpleasant listen.

Nope, didn't like this one, pop-punk isn't my sort of music and I didn't like the vibrato in the singer's voice. Rating: 2

Felt generic. Who knows, maybe all the bands we know stole their sound in 1980, but how would we know. Not very interesting, is fine. Feed me uniqueness. I'm hungry.

meh i dont really dig rock n roll

Sounds like Ben Folds.

For an 80s album, it's got a crisp quality to it. That's one of the biggest plus points of the album: not being underwhelmed by the toll of age and new sound. I was faintly amused by these lines: "You said you don't know how You're such a stupid cow" The rest of it does underwhelm. The teenage angst about girls and envy for peers were charming at first listen. But, it did not stick. The music felt repetitive. It definitely overstayed its welcome for me. As an experience, the album became mushed, all blending into this one claustrophobic guitar tone. It's opener, "More Songs about Chocolate and Girls" was a strong kickoff. But everything I got from that song, I got more out of it than any of the other tunes on the record. I got all that I needed to know from the opener and that was it.

Not as good as the first album

Forgettable

Never listened to the undertones before. What a weird wobbly voice the main guy has. Might be the worst cover of "under the boardwalk" I've ever heard Lots of teenage angst here. His wobbly voice is really getting on my tits. Teenage Kicks is good but its not even on this album.

The Undertones’ Hypnotised is like a cup of lukewarm tea—pleasant enough, but not exactly what you were hoping for. It has all the ingredients for a good time—catchy riffs, energetic beats, and a sprinkle of punk attitude—but somehow, it just doesn’t quite brew up to full strength. Tracks like “My Perfect Cousin” might get your foot tapping, but others fade into the background like that awkward conversation you’re trying to escape at a party. It's not bad, but it’s not quite hypnotic either. More like mildly distracted.

Typical 90's rock

This felt like a social experiment, an alternate reality when The Strokes weren’t as cool and were actually a bit weird.

Annoying voice, boring music. Not outright terrible but just didn’t have anything that made me want to listen again.

Yeah this is just okay. Drums and bass have interesting parts, singer has a recognizable voice, and the guitar tone is fucking awful. Not sure how to rate this. Some stand out songs I guess but mostly just mediocre. Very high 2

Kinda gives me my sharona vibes. Overall i have mixed feelings but I did like certain songs, under the boardwalk is good. Nothing to write home abuut but i still like the vibe

It’s never too late to enjoy dumb entertainment

Arvoin kahden ja kolmen tähden välillä. Kallistuisi kolmoseen jos olisi hieman lyhyempi.

Punk, but with softer vocals. So I think this is kind of like punk light. Guitars are running strong and excellent sound quality. Drums are on point and timely. Overall, well received and enjoyed. They probably could have done it in 15 songs instead of 18.

I’m hearing some undertones of misogyny and incelism from The Undertones. But I’ll just let them tell it themselves: “Boys will be boys,” the name of a song and a line on two other songs “The girls are laughing, they're very cruel” (Norman’s always running after girls, but they just laugh at him) “I've never kissed a girl before/Too shy to go outside the door/Can't listen to the way girls talk” “Girls that don't talk/Still can't see/When they come home from work/I wish they'd talk to me!” But who are we to question lobster-bibbed pop-punkers from Northern Ireland who’d rather whine about girls than confront the Troubles? Punk is so political and confrontational, but the Undertones wanted none of that. They wanted to escape from that. They wanted to just kiss girls. But they were too shy to leave the house?? How did these guys get credited with pop punk alongside the Ramones and the Buzzcocks? There are some great punk hooks and riffs early on “Hypnotised,” but by the back half it descended into boring pop songs.

2 stars

There's an Undertones album on the list and it doesn't even have Teenage Kicks on it. The most popular track according to Apple Music is "My Perfect Cousin", which has one of the dullest and least rock n roll subject matters imaginable. I find it strange the way they reference the lyrics of Teenage Kicks on a number of the tracks here; sounds to me like a band desperate to remain relevant by rehashing what they know works. Doesn't work for me. Weird inclusion on the list. 2.4/5

2. It wasn't very good. Almost like a PG Dead Kennedys without the wit.

Boring pop

I never liked The Undertones, mainly because I could not stand Feargal Sharkey’s voice. Sure, Teenage Head is a great track, but it’s about their only track that qualifies, & it ain’t on this album. It’s not a terrible listen, but it does nothing for me. And it could be the worst cover of Under The Boardwalk I’ve ever heard. Two stars.

Meh. Some songs were kinda fun but it started to sound the same after a few songs. Not my cup of tea.

This has a great start but kind of couldn't keep me interested.

Decent, but not noteworthy

I was unimpressed by this. Nothing about it stood out. It was just an ok album that I got bored of after two songs.

There has to be 1001 better albums than this.

This their second album on the list. It is just kind of there. It's a pu k album Relatively short but no desire to listen to it again.

Hypnotised isn't good. It's not so bad as to warrant a 1 but it doesn't do anything special, remarkable, talented or memorable. We've had better examples of punk or pop from adjacent bands from the same era, and there are better left off here. It's so inexorably bland, the lowest of 2s.

# 196 : I don't love it. I don't hate it, it is ok if kind of dull. Fav Track : There Goes Norman

What a mediocre album. Nothing special, nothing outstanding. All kinda samesies.
