Reviews (page 3 of 14)
You oughta know that all I really want is perfect album. You’d be forgiven thinking it is ironic that this gets pretty close. Sometimes I wake up to this album and the songs just go right through you. You learn to come to love this LP , and no one can tell you otherwise, certainly not the the Doctor. I saw her live on this tour but there was no crowd surfing, you know - the head over feet kind so common at metal gigs. More the hand in my pocket tapping away whilst singing along to Mary Jane. In short, top album. 5 stars for Jagged Little Pill.
A 90s classic. We saw her perform the album live in 2021 and every song still sound great. You Oughta Know and Ironic remain classics but some other standouts include All I Really Want, Right Through You, and Forgiven.
Amazing album, one of my faves.
Love her
This really is a great album. It was a rocket in the mid-90's. The songs were all played on repeat everywhere you went. And, given all that, I still like it! "You Oughta Know" has guitar by Dave Navarro and bass by Flea of Red Hot Chili Peppers! And the other songs have Chris Chaney on bass. That guy is on about 100 albums in different genres and is always good. She has an interesting voice and she adds a lot of little inflections and embellishments. In most singers I'm annoyed by too much of them (Looking at you Mariah Carey and the ilk!) but I very much like most of Alanis's choices. I sure do wish that "All I Really Want" was a little deeper in the album because I don't think it's the best presentation of her various vocal quirks/choices. I like the song, but I think most folks would be better served to hear some of the other songs first, then when you get to this one, you'd be be better prepared for those bits. I very much like "Perfect" because I don't know any other song that delves into that particular emotional scarring. And it's well done. I know "Ironic" doesn't contain many ironies, but let it go! It's a good song anyway. Definitely will listening to this one at least 10 more times in my life.
Nobody does bitter quite like Alanis Morissette. The perfect break up album.
Like one of my favorite of all the times - love listening to this
Already heard, already love. Personal pre-teen nostalgia of dealing with emotions and personal relationships from an angst femme perspective. Was unaware of the bonus track at end with vocals
this was such a fun album - clearly 90s, but also has some really deep meaningful subject matter, incredible vocal passion coming from AM, and also some really tasty rock instrumentation that encompasses the 90s pop element and also ties in to a lot of the female fronted rock bands today.
I am so glad i got to listen to this album again, such great tracks. The hits like you oughta know and ironic still slap. Also like the uplifting tracks like hand in my pocket and perfect. Forgiven is such a good deep cut and just such a good song about religious trauma. I like all the songs in some way or another, even the more annoying "you learn" song lol. Sharp lyrics, great music and range of emotions, good flow of album. And i dont know just has that quality that classic albums have that after a couple listens it feels like its always been a part of my life. I dont know how to explain it lol, same feeling I have with Rumours by Fleetwood Mac. 5 out 5 stars!
Seth McFarland nailed it, "This thing was unstoppable. This... this was the soundtrack my '95. To my '95 and my '96, actually." Six of twelve songs on this album were released as singles. I'm sure that wasn't the plan originally, but "unstoppable". It's fun to dunk on how popular this album was, but everyone had this album. All I Really Want is a good lead off song. Followed by the greatest song ever made about giving a blow job to a sitcom star in a movie theater. Well, the best one I've heard, I probably haven't heard all of them. Dave Coulier, you dog. Also unbelievable that Ironic is waaaaaay bigger than You Oughta Know. Hand in My Pocket is one of my favorite songs off this album. Honestly, the album tracks, what few there are, are still pretty good. Wine, dine and 69? Catholic priests? This poor girl was done wrong. Head over Feet is good too. This album is good. Ironic, even without considering her not being super clear on the meaning of irony, is overrated. Not the Doctor is good though.
Classic album that has been a mainstay since my teenage years. The soundtrack of the late 90s and early 2900’s. First concert I took my wife to and we got great seats for the 25th anniversary tour. Not a single skippable song on the album.
This album is full of bangers and has to be one of the best albums in this genre. Morissettes vocals really are excellent and she's able to control the edge in her voice in a way I can really appreciate. As someone who is completely outside the target audience for this other than age, I still love it.
Favorite tracks: You Oughta Know, All I Really Want This album is absolutely iconic for female millennials everywhere, so raw and full of angst. As a married woman who hasn't experienced a breakup in 13 years I still unashamedly sing/scream You Oughta Know whenever it comes on.
A classic album!
My face before seeing this was today’s album: 🥱 My face after seeing this was today’s album: 🤩 She’s such an artiste I love this whole album so much
What can I say, it formed my personality lol
Just an unbelievable album. You oughta know, hand in my pocket, you learn, head over feet, ironic. 🤯
Absolute fucking banger.
Among the best that Gen X had to offer.
I remember my cousin bought this CD when we were 11 and we played the hell out of that thing, we were blown away. Great album
Unquestionably 90s in its production and writing but damn, if this isn’t the best of its time. Perfect and complicated pop songs delivered with as much force as a runaway truck, Alanis nails every second on this album. It’s just extremely good!
Summer of my wedding including a fly in my Chardonnay
An easy 5 for me, the songs still feel so fresh and furious.
So many bangers on one album
So angsty in the best way. I really felt this album as a teen as many did I'm sure, and it still holds up to this day. Her voice is so infectious.
Pure 90s feminine angst 10/10 would recommend Also Uncle Joey you dirty Canadian dog
A fantastically raw and refreshing album that perfectly captures the 90s sound, as well as the personal experiences of Alanis. As far as I'm concerned, it is a no skip album that deserves to be listened to at least once by anyone worth their salt in music. Even during my first listen, I was eagerly awaiting the next track in anticipation of what was coming.
Oooooooooh shiiiiiiii! Man this album was everything to me when it came out. I was in love with Alanis. I saw her on this tour in 95 at the Greek. Right Through You was always my fave. One thing that I don’t like about this record is the bass tone on a few songs. I can’t stand that funk tone. But overall it’s an iconic album.
Easy money
If you lived in the West between 95' and 05', you were most definitely influenced by this. Millennial DNA right here. I cant add much to the conversation other than a big recommendation for the Jagged Little Pill musical. Its a fantastic adaptation with a serious story thats filled with self aware jokes
This is one of the first real albums I had heard once I started paying closer attention to music as a kid. An absolute time capsule of the 90s. That wah wah guitar tone throughout really dates it. Such a unique voice, surprised in a good way by how much commercial success this had - it pushes pop conventions, even by today’s standards. Saw a review that said Ballard kind of botched her vocals in production and to check out the acoustic tracks - on Spotify - worth a listen! Between a 4 and 5, rounding up for the nostalgia.
Early college memories, Kristin's fave. A classic 90s album that is probably on par with Carole King's "Tapestry."
Ironic god
Great album, lyrics choices, vocal performance choices, mixing is all top tier. Love it all around.
Excellent album. Raw, emotional, but controlled. No wasted songs and really great lyrics. Loved this when it came out and realize now I didn’t understand it at all at the time.
I remember the summer of listening to this well. Still enjoyable to sing along to.
I forgot how iconic this album is
Easiest 5 so far - yes, I am of the age that this album caters to. But to me, as 90's as it might sound, it doesn't sound dated. Everyone knows the jokes (Dave Coulier, 'that isn't ironic', etc.), but Alanis was the biggest deal out there for a time, this side of Kurt Cobain. After all, she played GOD in a movie, and everyone was like 'Yeah, that makes sense'. For me, this is one of top albums of the decade, and anything less than a 5 would be a shame. But WHYYY do they keep putting one of the best songs, the acapella Your House, as a hidden track at the end of a bonus track remix? Come on man, that's ridiculous! Plus, I saw her perform two years ago, and she still sounds perfect and puts on a great performance. 5 stars, zero doubt.
So 90s, but its to its benefit!
A cultural touchstone. It's hard to express just how ever-present this album was at the time, and the stranglehold it had on the people. It's an incredibly 90s-sounding album, but not in a bad way.
Very enjoyable album
14/1089 harmonica can be very hit or miss for me* but i’m enjoying this angsty start, i can already see how it’s influenced artists i love like Chappell Roan and Olivia Rodrigo. Early Katy Perry too. I definitely know the chorus of You Oughtta Know and parts of it sound similar to cadences in My Number One by Helena Paparizou *it’s a hit on Hand In My Pocket Lots of learning going on Realising that Ironic is THAT song was a great feeling, what a smash hit also liked Wake Up, it reminded me of Lamb (Gorecki specifically) not sure the You Oughtta Know remix needed to be included it’s dated 90s alt rock in the absolute best way, i love albums that capture a very specific moment in the culture i’m thinking 82/100 with 5 stars because i had a great time and will definitely be going back to this faves: Ironic, Wake Up, Right Through You and You Learn least faves: Perfect, Mary Jane YOK remix
One of the sounds of my high school years. Really amazing to hear then and fun to reminisce about now.
One of my favorite albums from my high school days. Used to listen to this one on repeat, and it is still holding up today. Funny that I never really enjoyed Alanis’ stuff post this album nearly as much.
Lowkey reminds me of fiona apple
Me flipa. Lo compré hace unos meses en vinilo. Se cumplen 30 años
Zapomniałam już jak dobra jest ta płyta. Kwintesencja lat 90 i pozłamaniowej goryczy. Dla mnie tak zwany no skip album. Tu siedzi wszystko: wokal, melodia, teksty! Te teksty! 9/10.
Truly a masterpiece. Dark and light, the imperfect vocals make it even more perfect. Relatable for anyone who grew up in the 90s when this album was huge. It truly never gets old.
It is one of the classics of alt rock.
What a classic album! Has so many good songs and she definitely got famous from it more than she was already! Definitely a classic 90s album!
Isn't it Ironic
Repeat listen
Clásico de mi época de bachillerato, tenia el CD y use muchas canciones en varios mixtapes
Absolutely stunning.
Awesome classic album, my daughter loved this album when she was little, You Learn is our favorite song !
One of the greatest albums of all time 🙌🏼💜
i absolutely loved this one. finally something good (amazing actually) after albums that sounded almost the same
I already knew I would love this! Country meets alternative meets concept album meets musical?
A 90s pillar. Musicianship, vocals, lyrics, and rock out are all top
Fave
What an angry bitch. 10/10. Phenomenal.
This has to be one of the most consistently high quality albums on the list for sure, the grungier elements might date this album to some but give it such an identity while also creating a fond, nostalgic sound. Her vocal performance was also fairly unique and while I had a few spots where I was worried she might get into a bit of over-enunciating which I find irritating. It’s something that is easy to look past after a song or two into the album.
Astounding vocals and songwriting on display by Alanis. I enjoyed the instrumentals all around, despite them being very much a product of their time. The sentiments expressed in the hit songs on this album are timeless, even if that probably gets lost by the average listener of the Totally 90s Throwback playlists. Giving these songs, particularly the hits, a proper listen, rather than just absorbing them over a car radio, has been a pleasure. Highlights; All I Really Want, You Oughta Know, Right Through You, Forgiven
Listening to this album really got my noggin joggin about a few things. First of all, this chick is MAD. Secondly, this is a very interesting example for me in terms of the cultural phenomena of music which is looked down upon or otherwise rubbished due to having a primary audience of young women/teenage girls. This is the first time I have listened to anything by Alanis Morissette outside of the big hits (which are coincidentally on this album), and the entirety of my prior knowledge of her as an artist had built a mental image of “rubbish whiny teenage girl music for crying about your fuckwit boyfriend” - this being based on any mention of her generally via other media being as the butt of a joke regarding the above. This is of course anecdotal, but coming into this with that as my foreknowledge it was pleasantly surprising that Alanis Morissette is a VERY good musician. Thirdly, the lyricism in these songs really speaks to how pervasive misogyny was throughout the 90s and 00s, I distinctly recall several lyrics which essentially fantasise about being treated with the bare minimum of human decency and care? (In head over feet she is saying how nice it is that they “ask how her day was”). Just a comically low standard that apparently was not being met by most men in year of our lord 1995? Further to the point, if you contrast this lyricism with the content of contemporary artists which catered more to a young male audience, (bit of a stretch here but slim shady LP came out in 1999 for example) it’s even more stark. Regardless of this however, I still had a little palette cleanser afterwards by listening to limp bizkits greatest hits.
My main association with Alanis Morissette is hearing Gen X women sing Ironic at the karaoke bar that I frequent (shoutout Blute's Bar), I have heard some renditions of this song that should be referred to the ICJ. I was also shocked to learn none of Morissette's music ever featured in Charmed, which seems like it would have made a lot of sense? I don't know if the vocals were abrasive to me at first because of the sound itself or my association with the drunken patrons of varying talent of the aforementioned karaoke bar. Long way of saying I found the vocal style needed time to gel with me but when it did, my enjoyment of this album increased A LOT. Some albums on this list have been incredibly dated (not a bad thing) due to their production and choices in instrumentation, Terence Trent D'Arby the most prominent example that comes to mind, this album is probably the 90s equivalent of that. Again, that's not a bad thing, I feel like this definitely encapsulates a certain moment in time very well, and instead of feeling like this would be a kitschy nostalgia trip for a certain cohort of annoying people, this feels like an angsty, charming and well written time capsule. I was going to give this a 4 based on my quasi-criticisms but I then realised I had listened to this three times in a row and only skipped the last song on repeats. I think it would be dishonest to rank it lower given that. Highlights: All I Really Want, You Oughta Know, Right Through You, Forgiven, Ironic
Lots of 90's bangers, loved it. Like a guilty pleasure album
Oh the angst. Great album in its time and holding its own.
Exceptionally good album. Forgot how good it was. Except incorrect examples of Irony which I wanted to mark down, minor in the scheme of things. Love the edginess of the songs. Great guitar and harmonica.
track 1: Okayy 90's beatt! Love this opening track. The way Alanis sings is my fav, really defined 90's music quality track 2: Oh I know this track hahahaha One of my fav. THE ANGSTTT!!! A break-up bop i'll never stop playing track 3: I love the meaning behind this track. to all parents out there, STOP PUSHING YOUR CHILDREN SO HARD TO BE PERFECT! LET THEM LIVE ON THEIR FLOW. track 4: I Love this trackk! Alanis voice, the way she sings, the meaning behind this track, live your life at your fullest peeps! track 5: THE CHORUSSSS IS CHORUS-INGG!!! Waitt the meaning behind this song is so dark wtf is that 2nd verse?? track 6: AARGHH THIS TRACKK!!!! THE GUITARSSS!!!! THE DRUMSS!!! THE LYRICSS!!!! track 7: AGAIN WITH THE 90's BEATSS!!! LOVING THE LYRICS SO MUCH!!! Okay, a little interruption here, but I envy those 90s kids living their lives on the same timeline with this record. Imagine being a millennial kid vibing with this record on the aux or the radio. Must've been a great time to live a life :') track 8: A sweet track that nothing much to say honestly track 9: SINGGG GIRLLL!!!! SINGG!!!! Please appreciate the female service worker people! track 10: Also one of my fav track. THE SONGWRITING ARGHH I ADORE THIS TRACK SO MUCHH, WORD PLAYING AT IT FINEST!!!! track 11: THE CHORUSSSS!!! PLEASE DON'T BE CO-DEPENDENT track 12: YESSS ENDING THIS RECORD WITH ANOTHER 90's BEATSS. LOVE THIS TRACK!! (9/10 might give it a 10) This is one of the record that fully defined the 90's Decade. Alanis delivery is so magnificent in this record. One of my fav of all time.
I really appreciate the production on this album. Alanis is right on top of the mix, loud and clear. I just can't understand why this isn't the norm. When I say Alanis has a great voice, I mean her singing voice and also her narrative style. Even as a middle-aged man, there isn't a single song on this album that isn't highly relatable to me. I think she has a way of connecting to pretty much everyone, even if they haven't had the same experiences. It's incredible to believe she wrote and recorded this album at 19. I listened to this in my mid teens when the album came out, and I really don't think I was prepared for what I was listening to. I liked the music and thought she had a great voice, but none of the experiences really resonated with me at the time, and she's only 5 years older than I am. Wise and perceptive beyond her years, for sure. I wasn't this perceptive until I was probably twice as old, and I still can't articulate these feelings so simply and impactfully. Alanis deserves every bit of credit and hype she ever got. That first belt of "It's like RAAIIAIIN" gives me goosebumps every time (and for this, I can absolutely forgive the misuse of the word 'ironic") ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
In 95 I was deep into hip-hop, had no time for the likes of Alanis Morissette. Wasn’t for me, wasn’t my thing, wasn’t good. Now here I am scratching 50 and I’ve taken the time to listen to jagged little pill and it is good very good in fact I’m gonna actually give it a 5. Isn’t that …..
I hadn’t listened to this in many years. However, after listening to it today, I realized what I had been missing. This is really a great album.
Best breakup album of all time. So many emotions and they are all right on the surface. No one sings like Alanis
I remember sitting at Hungry Jacks (the Aussie equivalent of Burger King) with my family, circa 1995, when Hand In My Pocket came on the restaurant radio. I'd been made aware of this new song via my group of friends, largely due to the fact that it featured a very naughty lyric. I waited patiently to see what would happen, and much to my disbelief, without the tiniest bleep of censorship, Alanis exclaimed at the top of her angsty lungs: "I'm brave but I'm chicken shit". My 11-year-old mind was blown.
The power force of the 90s that sparked a revolution.
Estupenda artista y magnífico álbum.
Most people are likely unaware that Alanis first hit the music scene as a dance pop diva. But I remember her first hit Too Hot in 1991. Ugh. All kinds of cheesy 80's faux instruments and sounds (carrying into the 90's) - like a Rico Sauve or Marky Mark effort. Which is what makes this self-chosen alternative rock transformation so remarkable. There's still a tinge of pop sensibilities at times on the album, but it is an edgier rock sound. And her vocals no longer sound like she's trying to emulate Paula Abdul but there's maturity, grit, and a hardness to it. And then there's her lyrics - talk about edgy, but also sardonic and clever as hell. Sort of a big F you to all the celebrities and industry folks who just wanted a piece of her (often literally) when she hit the scene, as well as a commentary on all of life's complexities. And in the latter it's a bit softer and she expresses vulnerability. I really love this album, have for a long time. It's got depth, it can be tender or it can rock. On the tender side, I think Perfect, Head Over Feet, and Mary Jane are sweet and powerful. And on the rock side, All I Really Want, You Oughta Know, and Right Through You bring the energy (and the F you attitude). Hand in My Pocket is a different style of rock, almost a Dylanesque sound (and poetic meter) and commentary, but one of my favorites. You Learn and Ironic are softer rockers but solid rockers nonetheless. Again, I really love this album.
The 90s were a fantastic time.
A standout album by an original artist and voice (often shrieking).
The song writing is so good, the voice is absolutely one-of-a-kind, the production adds flavor. She's obviously a soul singer influenced by 70s rock and whatever was on the radio. Its hard to imagine what happens on this album that didn't happen on any other album she's made. This is a gem of an album and the rest of her catalogue is pretty ho-him. Which is sad because it's an incredible debut.
You can't deny it, 95% is really fricking good. Despite the ironys just being poor luck. Was great to listen to it again all the way through, it's been a few years. Every single song is brilliantly produced, some beautiful words throughout and a top voice.
Yeaaah
There are some clunkers…. But overall a great album
Like Taylor Swift but really angry.
Serieuze banger
*Fistpump This album came out when I was 12 but didn't really grab the attention of radio until I was 13 or 14 and then it was absolutely everywhere. I was an edgy teen who was in to Nirvana and therefore this kind of music "was the enemy" I recently bought a copy of it for my wife on vinyl for her birthday (she loved the album when she was a teenager) and I have grown to appreciate how damn good it it is. Lots of highlights... All I really want, Head Over Feet... actually there isn't a bad song on here.
Ah, Alanis Moriessette: teaching people the wrong definition of 'ironic' for 30 years now.
Temazos : You learn, Ironic, Hand in my pocket y obviamente You oughta now. Otro estupendo disco suyo fue el posterior Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie con Thank you como puntal.
En till klassiker. Ett mästerverk i en mix av singer songwriter traditionen och alt rock/indie. Femma
Fantastic album! Love every song on this album.
I didn't realize how great this album was until I heard it in its entirety.
So good. So many hits. 5/5
YES! A classic
Didn’t need to listen to know this would be a 5. So many memories listening to this album growing up. An early “name that tune” mishap where dad asked me to fill in the lyrics for “Hand Over Feet” and I said “baby” and listening while playing in my closet with Mary and the Benage girls. So many bangers! I didn’t know the music videos but Joe showed me a couple, notably “Ironic,” which was apparently mind blowing in the late 90s.
Pure and powerful 90s rock/pop, perfectly emblematic of the musical landscape of the time period. Absolutely gritty, with a (strong) touch of cynicism - but still just so much FUN to listen to. This album is an icon of the 90s, but still has a timeless quality to it.
Love this album, seen her perform it live. Listened to the original and acoustic back to back, thank you for that excuse.
Love it
This shit sounds terrible in hindsight, it just sounds old af but it’s still a phenomenal album with classic records that will never go out of style!
love this album, one of my favorites
I love this album, the passion and the unfeigned anger; it grabs you and flings you about the room and by the end you're lying on the couch, exhausted from all the emotions.
clasicazos, voz mega iconica, mu bien
Very obsessed with this album, love that it sounds incredibly 90s, I am obsessed with the lyrics and Alanis’s voice is perfect. Standout tracks (all 5/5 completely perfect): - All I Really Want - You Oughta Know - Hand in My Pocket - Right Through You - Head Over Feet - Ironic
A wonderful female rock statement, influencial for other female artists.
Obviously
perfect album
O disco do ano em 1995, sem sombra de dúvidas!
90's classic
It smacked everyone in the face when it debuted and today it still....sigh...slaps. Already had 5 songs in my library, I can remember both of my sisters playing the shit out of this album growing up.
5 stars
I was born the year this album came out and I didn’t listen to it in full until I was 16. It was transformative for me then and I still love it today. I’ve seen Alanis live twice and she’s an incredible live act.
I’m old enough to remember the Too Hot, Too Cold Alanis. When she came bursting back onto the scene it was a welcomed sight. this was really the worlds first taste of angry woman music. Sure there were others before her but they were all mostly relegated to the underground scene. Alanis kicked down and burned that door. This album touches on all of the feeling a woman, showing signs of being on her period, would exhibit in a turbulent relationship. You’d be hard pressed to not like this album. Don’t get me wrong, there are some weak songs on here, like Perfect and Not the Doctor, but all in all it’s too hard to deny it’s greatness. And let’s face it, you don’t need me to explain this album to you. Even aliens who haven’t been on this planet yet know of this album. Choice cut: Head Over Feet
Feels like a greatest hits album when it isn't, there are so many classic songs on here. The mix isn't great and some songs didn't work for me - the vocals on Perfect sound pretty out of tune at points - but not enough to lose points.
Takes me back! So many great songs
A perfect album in my opinion, love it
Great song writing, great production, great performances (Flea and Taylor Hawkins played on this album.) Top notch.
This was awesome! Nicolette and I watched her documentary this passed Saturday. I was wondering if this album would come up here. I’m sure you can imagine my shock when this album was revealed on Monday 😊. Nicolette told me to think about her as an 8 year old listening to this album and learning to be fierce 😊. This is just an album of bangers. It is terrific. Kieran I think you and Hannah will love it. Dad 🧑 I’m guessing you are a fan of this record? Five starts. Awesome album.
I’m not sure how or why, but the second I saw the name of this album it struck a nostalgia cord for me. I knew, of course, the big hits off the album. Morissette is an incredibly talented singer and songwriter, and her vocals were phenomenal on this album. She’s a powerhouse, but there were also songs where she dialed it back and sounded like I’d never heard her before. She’s wildly talented. I would add any song to my everyday playlist without a second thought.
Amazing album and a blast from the past. I really enjoyed this one
Loved it then and love it now. Great storytelling with young woman angst in every note……had me singing/yelling along at 52!!!
She's the best.
Excellent album. Hit after hit and for good reason.
Half the songs on this record are standard 90s anthem singalongs.
What a great album. Almost every track is a proper 90s tune and there are so many hits as well. This is one of those albums that you expect to be on this list. Morissette has such a unique voice that is easily recognizable and fits the music so well.
enjoyed this immensely. i grew up hearing this album though the only tracks that I really remember are the singles. ironically the album cuts are just as good if not better than the singles.
I wrote an actual review the first time I listened to this front to back. Great album. Life changing to consume.
Just fucking talent. Another album where every song is a single. And man, the bass player! Absolutely dominating with a warm, mid-forward bass tone like Jaco on a P-bass. Something out of an earlier era that works on every track. I'm not the single biggest fan of this sound, but goodness the artistry and tracks are a consistent banger.
Brilliant album
Not my kind of music but it's absolutely classic. 6 singles I hear all the time. Every women I know loves this so ot must be good. 5 stars.
wow, reaaly interestin’z
🎧 Review of Jagged Little Pill Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ / 5 Cry-Screams This album is a time capsule full of jagged feelings, diary entries written in Sharpie, and the sound of a woman who found out you cheated and wrote a platinum-selling album instead of texting you 87 times at 3AM. It feels. And it makes you feel. Loudly. Messily. Perfectly. Alanis didn’t just make an album—she gave us all a permission slip to be emotionally unhinged and poetic at the same time.
You don’t have to ask me twice. Exquisite, no notes.
great album. it reminds me of chris cornell’s solo debut and i mean that in all the best ways. so many iconic tracks and the lyricism on this record are just so raw. fav tracks: forgiven, you outta know, ironic
Fucking love this album
LFG
Isn't it ironic that I have never heard this album until only last year? No, I guess that's not a definition of irony, but that doesn't stop Alanis. One of the greatest hits from 90s, a really solid record to come with it and my absolutely favourite You Oughta Know. Amazing song, transcendental, epic, essential, worthy of adjectives. Very emotional song that perfectly encapsulates a certain mood in one's life. Let's go Canada, best singer from the country by far, Celine Di-who? But seriously, really good album that has a nice spot in my small collection of vinyls on the shelf.
Okay, so "Jagged Little Pill" by Alanis Morissette? Huge deal, right? It's basically a massive dose of pure, honest feelings, especially when it comes to being a woman and just being pissed or vulnerable. The music itself is a cool mix of rock and pop, making it super catchy. Yeah, some people nitpick about her singing or how "Ironic" isn't, well, ironic, but honestly, who cares? This album hit a nerve, changed the game for female artists, and still feels real today. It's like a time capsule of 90s angst, but in a good way.
This one's part of the music during my childhood. Hugely influenced into it by my elder sisters, I think. Favorite picks: "Ironic", "Hand in my Pocket"
I remember when the album came out. It was very popular among my friends. And I loved it too. Rarely before have I heard such a powerful female voice. Unfortunately, especially in the first track, there are a couple of squeaks that are vaguely reminiscent of yodeling. Perhaps this was a must at the time, dictated by Michael Jackson, who does it unbearably often. Anyway, a great album, nice to have heard it again. (And whenever I hear Alanis Morisette I think of her performance as God in the movie Dogma. God has spoken) 5/5
amazing, did not realize how many songs ive already heard off this, great listen
she is so angsty and cool I love her. I can't believe uncle joey drove her insane smh
Many standout songs. Great voice. Stellar album
ironic is not even in the top 3 tracks from this album. really good
This was the first commercially popular album that allowed a women to express rage.
One of the great groundbreaking albums. It always has a position on my top albums list. Every song is great.
Gotta love this iconic album from Alanis - powerful lyrics and vocals, easy to jam to.
A near perfect pop punk album
Fantastic album. I have nostalgia for this album, it came out when I was 5 years old. I heard these songs on the radio, my parents owned the CD. My DAD wanted to listen to this. I get her voice isn't for everyone, but you're insane if you give this album a 1/5. That being said I was stuck between 4 and 5 here, so I'm rounding up just because it really holds up, and if you listen to the 2015 remasters rather than what is linked here, it just sounds a bit better for those complaining about the dated mix.
Man this is such a good album
This was the album of my youth and continues to hit and be completely on point 30 years later. Every song is raw and and makes such an indelible impression. The secret track will always be to blame for my big emotions in my early 20s.
Absolute breakout album. One of the top first albums and albums of the 90's. Most has aged well, like Alanis herself.
The only thing wrong with this album is nothing of those things technically meet the definition of irony. Alanis you are a beautiful female soul that pulled together an album that shares the complexity of the female soul. We are complex, see the beauty in simplicity and have a right to be angry. Just a few things to note....Perfect reminds us that we are expected to be perfect and yet that perfection is usually completely contradictory making it unattainable. See Right Through You, what women has that had that relationship and wanted to scream at the man like You Oughta Know. Forgiven is a lesser known song, but dang does she rock out and dig deep on the emotion. There's is a little of Mary Jane in all of us, using toxicity to hide the real pain and never fully healing. Then we move into the opportunity for love Head Over Feet and looking at the small positives in the world after dealing with the bads You Learn. Alanis you are a queen <3
This was a great album when it came out. It's still a great album. Every song! There's not a bad song on this album. Forgiven is my favorite non-hit. But All I Really Want is still my favorite song on this album if I had to pick a favorite. It's just really great songwriting that can flow from quiet introspection to seething rage, backed up with great instrumentation, groovy beats, and stellar recording.
Obviously a 5! This album was so unique and fucking awesome when it first came out, and it has aged like a fine wine. Alanis kicks ass.
An absolute classic. This is one of the defining albums of the 90s.
I loved this album; the music isn't perfect, and the lyrics are weird, but it made me want to get a group of friends together for a Jagged Little Pill karaoke night.
I was not a huge fan of Alanis, but this album is pop-culturally significant and the hits are pretty fuckin fab - I still love Head Over Feet. 5 stars for taking me back to a time when all scorned women blasted You Oughta Know.
This album is both nostalgic and still so timely. Loved it when it originally dropped and love it now.
As a nineties kid, this hits hard. I still remember endlessly watching Alanis screaming her lungs out while driving through the woods in the Ironic video. I’m sure that I’ve listened to this album before though I don’t really remember the album tracks. They’re great though. This is really a classic of nineties pop rock. Grungey guitars, Alanis’s unique vocals. It’s all so much of the nineties and I love it. It’s super dramatic and big without feeling over the top. It feels very personal and is very easy to relate to.
This album is raw. I love it
I’m 5 mins in, and easily 5 stars. This is what this project was made for. I don’t even to this type of genre, but I loved this.
10/10. This album helped remind me that there is a lot of great 1990's pop music out there. This album reminds me of P!nk, for some reason. I love the vocals. I love the lyrics. I love the music. I probably would have loved this song when I was around six years old.
Queen!
YASSSSSS. 100/10. This album is perfection and will forever have my heart.
YUP
# Album Name: Jagged little pill # Artist: Alanis Morissette # Rating: 5/5 # Comments: Wow, this really reminds me of the 90s. Alanis has good vocals on this record. Very edgy. I like it. The singles on this album are actually very strong, good songs. Its a bit cheesy, the album has aged a tad. Definitely of the time but this album has plenty of great tracks on it. Really enjoyed this listen. # Top Tunes: You outta know / Hand in my pocket / You learn / Head over feet / Ironic # Would I listen to it again? Yes
whole album was a vibe right up my alley for 90s alternative. I got into the hype of this artist and really saw why people rave ab them.
Thank you
Album 686 of 1001 Alanis Morissette - Jagged Little Pill (1995) Rating : 5 / 5 A near perfect album. About as close as you can get. Great from beginning to end. Writing, performance, instrumentation, production....all top notch. Whether or not it is your genre, you can't deny its excellence. It was and still is a banger.
My first memory of this was listening to it in art class. Freshman year. Steven, the kid who sat in the back, waved me over. "You gotta listen to this. She talks about giving a blowjob in a theater!" The meaning of "You Oughta Know" has morphed for me over the years-- I didn't really get it when I was 15, but I get it now. My feelings about this whole record have changed as well. It is not just the record with "You Oughta Know" on it. It is a record that shouldn't have been successful in the fickle, misogynist music industry of it's day. It's a truly genuine record, the good and the bad, and it's a record that the industry tried to copy but just could not.
Great 90s stuff
Between this and Mellon Collie yesterday we're going through the greatest hits of my teens. This is a very 90s album, but it still hits. Alanis is a legend.
One of my favourite albums ever. My first concert ever (that I wanted to go to) was a couple of years ago to see the anniversary tour for this album.
Loved it. Plain and simple. Timeless.
My dad called her his god after this album came out. Then Dogma came out and he became a prophet. This is in the conversation for best album of the 90s for me
With all albums on the list that I already know and love(d) I start out assuming it's a 4/5 when put in the context of some of THE great albums. Sure, I loved it when I was 14 and hadn't heard that much music, and I'm sure I'll still enjoy it, but it's no longer going to hit the same now. Surprisingly, this album absolutely holds up for me. It has hits spread throughout (I'd forgotten that Ironic is at track 10), and the album tracks all contribute variety and depth. It struck me that word perfect 14 year old me didn't really appreciate the subjects Alanis Morissette was singing about - I was able to enjoy this on a different level today.
Nostalgic listen for me, as this was one of the first CDs I ever bought in the 90s. I haven't listened to it since probably middle school. Still holds up, great album, good mix of dynamics and tempo.
no better album in the world
LOVE LOVE LOVE IT. This album is one of my favorites, top 10 for sure
beautiful album, very unexpected combinations. songs combine melodic and at the same time not very trivial. head over feet hits you in the heart.
An iconic album
What a hit. Loved it
fuck to the yeah. can't believe i'm only just now hearing this.
Excellent album
I tell you what is ironic. Lenneth Houmous getting sick off some chickpeas during our tour of Greece in ‘06. 4.5
Always thought I should give this album a try, glad to finally have. This was great. There's something special about her delivery, a bit unhinged and raw, but deep and real. Just the right amount of grunge to feel rough. But a really good listen
This was one of the first CDs I bought
Wow - the anger is intense and barely controlled throughout. These are great songs and lyrics. Her vocals are amazing and often right on the edge of falling apart. You don't see too many artists trying to copy this style - it’s a lot harder than just learning a few quirky diphthongs - I'm talking to you Indie-girls.
Alanis is so judgey and I’m loving it. “And all i really want is some patience”. Me and my boyfriend were JUST talking about how I have no patience?! I’m truly connected to All I Really Want. Her vocal delivery is what makes this, she’s so recognisable as a voice which is a hard thing within pop. The cut to silence is amazing. She definitely understands human nature. You Oughta Know, every woman has been through the pain she’s capturing in this. An ex has told you, you were the one, however the person that has replaced you happened just a little too fast. She is direct with this lyricism, no sugar coating is happening. The production behind it is fabulous, Glen Ballard and Alanis make a good team. The angst that is in this song is really connecting to how I felt at 21, just like she was. Perfect, not to quote hannah montana, but nobody’s perfect, that’s what i feel Morissette is getting at. She’s got power in her delivery here, but also contrast of basically whispers right after. “love you the way you are, if you’re perfect”. An amazing way of communicating that if you’re not right for me you’re not the one. Hand in My Pocket, I know this one. A song about being multifaceted, and that being the most frustrating thing about being alive. But what it comes down to, is everything will be alright. What a masterpiece. 21 year olds needed this in ‘95 and I can tell you I am happy this song exists for the people in 2025. Right Through You, the raw feeling of not being taken seriously. The epitome of being a young woman. Especially when being a creative. “Now that i’m a zillionaire, you scan for your name in the credits, wonder why it’s not there”. Never underestimate the memory of a woman that you turned away from. She sees through you. Forgiven, well she wrote this for me. And every girl that grew up one way. But live out another. This is a true confessional, written so well. And the performance, the borderline shouting, the minor keys, the creepy sound surrounding her doubt, her confusion. This song is about the cult that catholicism can be, and what a subject matter to attack and kill it. You Learn, the title is used in this song. It’s a song about living life to the fullest. Because what else are we here to do, if not try and try and fuck it up. There is always redemption in carrying on. There is love and hope and happiness eventually just by being here. Alanis wants us to stop being soo serious, remember we are all just doing it “the way a three year old would do” really. Head Over Feet, I completely feel this way about the love in my life. He just came into my life and turned it upside down in the best way. And i constantly remind him that “i couldn’t help it, it’s all your fault”. I really really understand Morissette and feel para social towards her. I’m not the first and i’m sure won’t be the last. She really was a genius at 21. Mary Jane, now i’m taking this as falling out of love with smoking weed. That’s because I personally have. We don’t get along anymore, it did really bad things to me in the end. And I think Alanis feels the same way. Also using it for a metaphor for herself. Talking to herself trying to encourage her to be honest. Not censor her feelings, or cover them up by getting high. But truly longing to find escapism in it, instead of paranoia. I personally cannot get over what a power house this woman is. Her voice is impeccable. I’m almost ashamed that this is the first time i’m listening to her properly. Ironic, i know this one too! To me it’s her Joni Mitchell track. With much more late 90s grunge thrown in. She can write a pop song, good god. WHAT A CHORUS. This alone is her ticket to the hall of fame for me. Her relatability is off the charts. Timeless is hard to do, while being catchy and meaningful. Not the Doctor, do not give this woman a boy instead of a man. She is not having it. Her standards are set and they are as high as they should be. Do not do/be everything to someone, losing yourself in the process. What a song to live by. Last song, Wake Up, this song builds tension very well. It gets you to a point where you think it’s gonna break, and release you to a full chorus, and it won’t. Complimenting the sentiment of the song. Ending this album saying the words Wake Up feels right. I can now understand who Avril Lavigne, to name one, idolised. This woman must have created so many careers without even knowing it. I feel I haven’t spoken enough about Ballard, but it’s almost like he’s done such a good job at producing it’s impossible to pick it apart. I cannot imagine these songs sounding any different, that surely is perfect production. This to me is 5/5.
Loved it!
BANGER after BANGER after BANGER 5/5
Yeah it lives in 1995. But it played on pop stations and rock stations. There's something about this record that hits so hard it can't be ignored. It's honest. It's gen-x. It doesn't care what you think.
Classic and stands the test of time.
Jeg sled den CD op i 90erne og kan stadig langt mere af teksterne end jeg troede. 5 store nostalgiske stjerne
My first concert was Alanis. This album was pivotal to my youth. It carried me from kid to teenager.
If this album were released today, it's likely that Alanis would be accused of being an industry plant. Fortunately, it was 1995 and social media would have to wait. Regardless, "Jagged Little Pill" was an unstoppable hit machine and cultural touchstone. Already an easy 5-star record, plus a little extra for the "secret" track hidden at the end of the CD.
The sheer number of hits on this album make it nearly a five. The non-hits make it lose just a little. I'm torn between a 4 and a 5. I'm going to round up because women are underrepresented on this list.
Absolutely one of my all time favorite albums!
Love her
👍🏼
Surprisingly enjoyable and way more "rocking" than i expected it to be. Sounds like the Perfect sum of 90s' pop rock
this album is full of contrasting concepts. anxiety vs. confidence. vulnerability vs. power. perception vs. reality. fragility vs. strength. pretty heavy stuff for a nineteen year old. there is very little filler on this album. even with the album’s shortcomings (i know, there is no irony, ironically enough, in the song “ironic”), it really is a killer album. let’s talk about “you oughta know”. regardless *who* the song is about, it really is a well crafted song. but if it is about dave coulier (as has been heavily speculated over the years)… FUCK. THAT. GUY. she was nineteen when she wrote this album with the greatness of glen ballard, which means that coulier was (checks notes) thirty four. oof. that’s creepy and predatory. and he was clearly (assuming that was him the song was about) in another relationship. tis interesting that according to wikipedia, coulier was divorced in 1992, when morissette was eighteen, so there’s that. coincidence? and for my money, i have yet to hear anything close to the venom behind her words “and are you thinking of me when you *ever so slight pause* fuck her”? do me a favour and listen to it again. trust me. at the end of the day, this album launched alanis into the stratosphere. it transformed her from a teen bubble gum pop princess with marginal success in canada to an alt-rock goddess. she became a “girl boss” before that was even a thing. literally HALF of this album was on the radio and it has sold over 30 million albums worldwide. it is literally one of the top selling albums of all time. highlights: “you oughta know”, “right through you”, “forgiven”
Heerlijk album. Ik kan me nog herinneren dat ik het veel geluisterd heb in de jaren '90. Het heeft ook enkele bekende nummers. Leuk om weer eens te horen.
Crazily self assured album for her age. Even so far as to make the breathiest song first.
Some brutally honest lyrics and excellent songwriting. Hooks for days.
Iconic lp from an iconic woman.
I have loved this album since it came out. I remember jumping on my bed and playing it on my stereo as loud as I could. Super cathartic album.
Iconic
There’s only one criticism I have for the album and that’s the fact that all I really want is a grower so it feels weird being song 1 but at the same time I couldn’t imagine anything else being in its place now. The best song is forgiven, it’s so filled with drama and the lyrics are just beautiful. Even when I was younger and didn’t ‘get’ the album I liked forgiven. The singles are great I actually prefer the less popular ones (you learn and head over feet) to you oughta know and ironic. One hand in my pocket is amazing though! Not the doctor and right through you scream underrated both of those songs could’ve been hits too. Wake up, Mary Jane and perfect are great slower moments they work very well for the album, I don’t necessarily listen to them on their own too often and my only excuse is there’s so much good music in the world. I refuse to count the other version of you oughta know and your house, they’re not on the vinyl version and they feel tacked on, if I included it it would diminish the quality of such a good album!
Incredibly solid album. I feel like I forgot how good of a singer and songwriter Morissette is. Every bit of anger, sadness, hope and humor pours out in these tracks, and it's hard not to bob your head and sing along.
Every one a hit!
Amazing voice and lyrics backed by a 90’s signature band. Such raw energy. Nobody sounds like her.
- All I Want and then You Oughta Know... Wow! - Now there's an intro - You can see why she's a household name for my generation - There are so many great tracks on this album - She's lyrically raw and unapologetic, which is refreshing to hear
Banger. Probably in the top 5 best albums of the decade. The hits are killer. The deep tracks are killer. 5 stars all day.
The most perfect of perfect albums for me.
Love it.
No private session used for Spotify. I remember when this album came out, there was a vast sea of angry white men rock, angry white women rock was a welcome change and this album was embraced with constant airplay. Now, I will admit I have spent too many hours discussing the song "Ironic" and how none of the stories in the song were ironic at all, but it's still a nice song.
This is almost post grunge. The vibes on this album are absolutely immaculate, and the perfect lens to view this period in time through. Almost every song on this record is instantly recognizable as Alanis Morissette. There’s also no bad tracks on this album either, in my humble opinion. I’m a huge fan of her voice, and the distinct vocalizations present were definitely both novel for the time and trend-setting going forward. Nothing but good things to say here, 5*
Perfect and Forgiven still gut me all these later.
What a gem. I think all 5 of these stars are nostalgia-related, but whatever, this album is still great. When I was in middle school, I had to pick a biography to read for a book report and much to my surprise, my local library had one on Alanis Morissette. I don't doubt that I had the coolest book in the class hahaha.
Robin daggers 90s masterpiece
A classic from the 90s! It's really interesting how the sound of this album remains fresh to this day. It feels like it was released yesterday! There's not much to argue with. A classic 90s rock album, with really good songs... 5 stars!
this is the queen
Awesome!
God herself, great album.
Brilliant album. I just love the bitter rage of You Oughta Know and coupled with All I Really Want, it’s one of the best opening to an album, ever. It did ride a little closer to a 4 than I was expecting though. At nearly an hour long, it lost a bit of power in the middle and the irony of completely missing the meaning of irony in Ironic is no longer funny to me, it just seems straight up stupid - like, do 10mins worth of research before releasing that? But it’s an absolute banger and still an easy 5.
Iconic 90s album.
So powerful, so alive, so good 4.8
Alanis Morissette - Jagged Little Pill This album is the epitome of being heartbroken. I heard about this album before but never really took the chance to listen through it until now, it caught me off guard, because it really has that "don't judge a book by it's cover" vibe. I expected it to sound like an average"pop" album from the 90's, but in the end, I underestimated how catchy and good it sounds, especially with the riffs and melodies that it has to offer. Almost every song here is a highlight, that's how good it is. Words can't even describe how amazing this album is, specially to those who went through what the album is talking about. 1.- All I Really Want = 9/10 2.- You Oughta Know = 10/10 3.- Perfect = 8/10 4.- Hand In My Pocket = 9/10 5.- Right Through You = 10/10 6.- Forgiven = 10/10 7.- You Learn = 9/10 8.- Head Over Feet = 10/10 9.- Mary Jane = 8/10 10.- Ironic = 10/10 11.- Not The Doctor = 8/10 12.- Wake Up = 9/10 FINAL SCORE = 9.1/10
Really nostalgic. Really enjoyable. So many hits.
Great album
I didn’t really care for this so much when it came out initially. Maybe because it was just overplayed on every radio station you can ever think of. But over the years I really come to appreciate this album. And she clearly never repeated this again. But she didn’t really need to. Since she probably made so much money on this first album.
Landmark album of my early teenage years. My dad had it. My brother got a copy from my uncle. I got it too. Alanis Morissette is the reason I wanted to become a singer-songwriter.
Easy 5. Monster of an album, captures the nineties easy.
Fuck yeah bud I love this album! My cousin made me a cassette that had most of this on one side and the Space Jam soundtrack on the other. If you have a more 90s thing than that you can shove it up your ass with your Talkboy! “Get outta here you nosy little pervert or I’ll slap you silly.”
Oh hell yes, Alanis goes hard. She sounds so raw, a hoarseness that I never noticed before. I love it. Easy 5* Highlights: ironic, hand in my pocket, you oughta know, all i really want, right through you, forgiven (chills during the chorus), you learn, head over feet Ok, I think I just don't like the soft fillers (mary jane, perfect, wake up), but otherwise enjoyed the whole thing.
This album is perfection of 90s. Some true anger and heart put into this. A raw emotion and music just is perfect 90s sound.
One of the great albums of the 90s. If it was possible to wear down a CD mine would be gone.
Incredible voice, and exciting tunes.
Enjoyed this since I heard it the very first time when I was 11 or 12
love
I think I know all these. I lived this album in real time. I forgot about the opening track. But once I heard it it came back. I love the expressiveness of her voice. The more I listen the more I remember. This album is phenomenal.
Beethoven? Mozart? Chopin? Never heard of them. All I know is Alanis Morisette. The Vibe: 90s teen flick soundtrack
Thank you, Uncle Joey
I was prepared for a dull singer-songwriter thing, but I found myself getting really into this! Some songs I didn't realise I already knew, and the others were mostly really poetic and enjoyable. Thank you Alanis hehehe (Dary from Letterkenny did ruin this for me tho lol)
Obvi one of my faves!
Bought it, loved it, played it to death. It’s aged phenomenally well; as emotionally galvanizing to a 56 year old full of menopausal rage as it was to a 27 year old who had just entered into a short and very ill-advised marriage. Not a duff track on it and it’ll get played to death again over the coming weeks.
honestly really good album already knew several of the songs alanis can be a really insane vocalist
Jesus, this is almost 30 years old. I feel old now. This was revolutionary in how it gave voice to a sort of female anger. Definitely not the first, but incredibly influential and successful at the same time. Pity that the most annoying song on this album - Ironic - became its most successful track.
This is such a classic album
I definitely hated on this as a kid (I mean, I still chuckle a little at that Canadian pronunciation of “it figures”), but listening to this in full, probably for the first time, I realize that Alanis create a true masterwork with this album. It’s crazy how many hits this had, her sound was in the right place at the right time, but it’s also aged well (maybe not the drum machines). You Oughta Know is a badass break-up song. Perfect is a beautiful sweeping ballad. You Learn, Head Over Feet, and Hand in My Pocket are all great 90s singles, and of course the smash Ironic. The non-singles are all pretty good quality too. I convinced myself this is a classic, it figures.
Aw hell yeah! This was the first tape cassette I ever asked for and received as a kid. I was 9 when this album was released, but I think I got it a year later, in 1996. In retrospect, 10 is pretty young for this type of content, but my parents were always cool about that sort of thing. As long as it wasn't costing my parents time or much money, they DGAF what we did, watched, or listened to. However, I admit I had NO IDEA what this album was really about at that age. When Alanis bemoans "the mess you left when you went away," 10 year old me always envisioned someone leaving her apartment messy and she had to tidy up after them. How rude! And yes, I was absolutely scandalized when I found out it was Uncle Joey she was cursing. Anyway, this album is full of bangers from start to finish. Obviously I'm biased since this was a seminal album for me, despite my youthful innocence about the content matter.
YEAH
An absolute no skips album. So happy to have this appear on this list. Easiest 5 stars yet!
HELL YEAH!!!! I cannot be objective about this album. I haven't listened to it in decades, but this was one of my very first cassettes (!) as a kid, and I listened to it and read all the lyrics over and over. Honestly this album changed my life, and might have been the reason I became a singer. Every god damn song on this is incredible. I can't believe how many singles there are! And the non-singles are just as good. I mean I am almost in tears listening to Forgiven, and just remembering scream singing along to it as a 10 year old (catholic) girl. Thank you 1001 for including this album and reminding me of this part of my life. 5/5
Groovy, angsty, heavy, singalongable.
All time favorite, need something new.
I have always been a little sad that Alanis's career didn't unfold better. This is such a good and strong album. It is pop, but it also has a lot of depth to it, and Alanis unflinchingly faces demons that so many women face at the hands of abusers. Despite all of that, she has a hopeful tone that finds it way out in song. Brave Alanis. Great album.
I was only 8 when this came out but still somehow managed to absorb so many of the songs, given how huge this album was, all the radio airtime for the singles etc. It's easy to see why it was huge though, her writing really taps into the angst of being a jilted lover. It's a common trope in music but I can't think of many albums that capture this better. The vocals deliver the big hooks with an emotional punch, you believe what she is singing
So unabashedly 90s; this is what I imagine that era to sound like whenever I think of it. You just can't get tired of this album.
What can I say? I love this album...the drama, the heartbreak, the Joy that comes out of it. I love listening to it
I knew a lot more of these songs than I would have guessed. There's a cohesiveness that made them blend together a touch but generally just works. Morissette's voice is so strong and distinct and it's used in a bunch of ways. She utilizes lyrical rhythm really well (typically throughout the verses). Production, mixing, etc. is also really strong. There's flashes of the Jeff Buckley album on a handful of songs. It's fun to see the content flash between immaturity and deeper thoughts. It captures that early 20s timeframe really well.
A 90s classic. Lots of recognizable songs and Alanis Morissette really has a unique sound. Don’t know if I’ll listen to it again but glad to have given it a listen. Hits : You Oughta know, Hand in my pocket, You learn, Head over feet, Ironic, and Wake Up.
Hvað get ég sagt? Alanis bjargaði mér með þessari plötu. Fyrsta sprungan í grímuna mætti þegar ég stúderaði plötuna og textana í fyrsta sinn. Gæti spilað hana í hausnum á mér nótu fyrir nótu frá upphafi til enda án þess að fara sekúndubrot út af taktinum eða tónhæðinni. Elska Alanis.
The soundtrack of my youth🤘
it was great
Man, I remember when this album came out. Alanis was everywhere. Knowing this album was like the way for people to know that you were cool back in my 6th grade days. It's still a great album, but as others have said it does sound a little dated 30 years later. But so do a lot of other albums on this list. I remember the first time 12 year old me heard You Oughta Know, "man this lady is pissed off and she's a fucking badass!" I still love that song. Really, most songs on this album are great. I enjoyed listening to again, it had probably been like 25 years at least since I heard the whole thing all the way through. This record is probably one of the best mainstream albums of the 90s and I don't think many would argue. Perhaps not a solid 5/5 in my book but damn close enough.
Great album, multiple tracks I knew and really enjoyed. Very neat voice. Alanis morissette walked so Paramore could run
Damn!! I have this album on cd at home, and I never listened to it. Of course I already knew 'You Oughta Know' and 'Ironic'. But this album blew my socks off. I actually really enjoyed listening to her voice, the female rage and yes, I really do think IT'S LIKE RAIINNNN - jokes aside, I do think it's a masterpiece of the 90's.
Absolute banger, Ironically (and incorrect usage of that word is permitted in this context) I would have dismissed this at the time as "too poppy" and "grunge lite. But wow, it really dated very well. Thought provoking and intelligent lyrics, delivered with conviction, power, and THAT voice. Hard to pick a best track from this. Much less compressed than productions of the time and the band is really great. Listened 3 times and will plan on big speakers over the weekend.
What's to say that hasn't already been said? As I listened to this yesterday, I'm still blown away by her powerful performance and delivery. Oh, and the dogs are great and have depth and meaning behind them. This one is unforgettable.
Alanis said what women were thinking. Until this point, men were calling it like they saw it in songs but women were expected to be sad and soft creatures when relationships ended. Jagged Little Pill showed the world we were pissed off and not playing fragile little flowers anymore.
En su tiempo no la soportaba. Pero ...
One of the best albums of the ‘90s.
Stunning. Close to perfect album. 97/100 imo
This album brought back some really good memories for me. I didn’t realize how many hits she had on this one album. Some may knock it for sounding a bit dated, but for those of us who were coming of age when these songs were playing on the radio, it will always be a blast to hear. Alanis is awesome and was such a cool and strong figure for girls in the 90s.
Great album!
This album gives off young celine dion trying out alt pop rock. Amazing album with stunning vocals and instrument usage. REALLY enjoyed the feel and such rawness of this project. Favs: All I really want You oughta know Perfect Right through you Forgiven You learn Head over feet Ironic Not the doctor Wake up My most favourite song on this project is: Head over feet
This really is a great album and a time capsule of the time. with that being said, it is still relevant and an excellent album. There is a reason it was made into a broadway musical. It tells a great story and has great music.
This has probably been my favorite album on the list so far. Some iconic songs, but all of them are so good.
Man what a delight to find something I loved in the 90s that still kicks ass! I’d been starting to think I was wrong about it all back then. At least I wasn’t totally off musically, and seems like my celebrity crushes were on point.
I'm a sucker for 90s alternative.
Angry girl pop rock from the 90s? Inject it into my veins. No skips. This album is iconic.
Few albums manage to sound so of their time and so fresh all at once. Morisette is unapologetically herself, unloading all of her “ugly unladylike” emotions, and it just works. (Even if she doesn’t know what irony means.)
Something about Alanis Morissette's slightly unhinged vocal style is very compelling
Bangers on bangers. 5.
Some of the most iconic songs of the 90s are on this album. Personal enjoyment: 4/5 Relevance to this list: 5/5
I’m very familiar with this album. This was my sister’s favorite back then, and it gets listened to in my household to this day. Usually just a song or two, but I’ve listened to it all the way through within the past couple years. Its highs are VERY high. Its lows are …pretty high. I came into this knowing I’d give it higher than a 3, but like “What’s The Story Morning Glory “ this listen reminded me: Even though this “sounds like the 90s,” it’s a goddamn masterpiece.
Amazing talent
Terrific album. Even better as a complete album than the hits by themselves.
Perfect!
This album is all the hits! I didn't realize every single song of hers I know is from this album. But even songs I didn't know were amazing. Definitely want to listen to this again, probably a lot. I also noticed how some of my favorite artists were likely influenced by her.
Old favorite! Still love it!
This was one of my absolute favorite albums of all time when it came out, and I still adore it. This may be a nostalgia vote, but it gets 5 stars from me. Every single song is amazing.
One of my most played albums in my college years. Still holds up And songs make more sense to me know than they did back in college. This album helps me cry when I need to and helps me feel better that Im not as fucked up as alanis.
7/23/24. Coincidentally just saw Alanis perform for the first time two days ago! She sounded great that night and it feels like this album hasn't aged and will never get old. Pretty incredible album with its powerful lyrics and grunge like sound. This will forever be one of my favorites.
What is there left to say about Jagged Little Pill that hasn't already been said. This album is iconic and timeless. This is definitely a top 1000 album.
This was almost as groundbreaking as Nevermind or Versus. A mainstream female artist that was singing about life in a raw, open way. Pop just didn't do that before.
mais um que não é clássico a toa
No skips. 10/10. First album I ever bought at a used CD shop in middle school. Perfect then and perfect now.
