Underrated band

Fun mix of psychedelic and early alternative/grunge.

I'm surprised that I wasn't already familiar with these guys. This sounds like pretty solid grunge rock to me, so I'm not sure why they weren't more popular in the 90's. I guess they just never had a breakthrough single on the radio. 4.1

Hat mir ganz gut gefallen, war nichts besonderes, aber fand ein Paar Songs echt gut.

Day472 - i think screaming trees should have been bigger than they were

The most underrated band of the Seattle scene. Solid llsten. These guys should have been bigger. RIP Mark Lanegan.

I’m not sure how missed this one back in the day, but I wish I hadn’t. It actually lives up to the hype.

This was really good. Have heard of Screaming Trees before but never really listened to them. It was just a bit too long to get the full 5 from me.

Rock and roll confirmed.

Unfortunately, I've never even heard of these guys. What a pleasant surprise! A collection of really thoughtful, well-written, well-played and engaging tunes. Sometimes psychedelic, grunge, and hard rock played to perfection.

Love Narks voice. Some nice stuff here

Grungegaze Inject all the 90s rock right into my veins. I don’t care how mid it is, just the fact that it came from the 90s makes it COOL and AWESOME anyway. There’s a certain veneer to these albums from this time period that scratches an itch in my brain. Ty Kurt Cobain for saving us from hair metal and synth-pop and carving out space for bands like Screaming Trees and Sponge and Sugar

Nice surprise! I didn't know this band; they seemed boring when I read about them. But this had some pretty good quality grunge, kind of like your favourite grunge band's favourite grunge band vibe. I can't give it 5 because they didn't change the genre or do anything super unique, but this is a good, engaging album. Much better than Soundgarden.

The riff in All I Know is straight-up classic rock. It gives me a warm, fuzzy feeling, thinking back to times when the Venn diagram between good music and popular music was nearly a perfect circle. It's such a darn good track, with subtle synths underlying a thickly layered guitar-bass arrangement. Plenty of distortion, a solid chord progression, good singing, active, driving drums... what more could you want from a track? Dying Days has a nifty acoustic-to-electric transition that's reminiscent of Led Zeppelin's Over The Hills And Far Away. I'm almost positive it was intentional. Regardless, another rock-solid track, with some great layered guitars and drums giving a heck of a lot of energy to the sound. This isn't the only time Screaming Trees tries out this idea of acoustic-electric contrast between two different sections. There are at least two other tracks on the album with this kind of transition. And it’s cool every time (though it starts to become predictable by the lengthy closing track, Gospel Plow). I noticed a Mellotron in several tracks, including the beautiful Traveler and country-spy-esque Dime Western. Reminds me of 60s and early 70s rock, as well as some other 90s material that was released partly as a 60s nostalgia trip. (Mellotron was featured heavily in Radiohead's OK Computer, for example.) Lots of nods to psychedelia, blues, classic rock, and retro country throughout the album, which is a fresh take on the grunge movement I don’t think I’ve seen before. And yet I do kind of understand why critics place this record below some of its contemporaries – including Pearl Jam and Nirvana. It isn’t fresh-sounding for its time, even if it is technically a fresh combination of genres. And many of the tracks sound similar to each other. A feel-good record, not unlike the Eagles (or whatever the grunge equivalent may be). But in the 90s, most audiences were looking for something more cutting-edge. 4/5 Key tracks: All I Know, Dying Days, Traveler

Das war überraschend gut. Diese Gitarren haben mir echt gefallen.

This was a nice surprise. I enjoyed it a lot!

A good album, I like Halo of Ashes the most.

Knew a couple songs by Screaming Trees back in the 90's when I was a teenager, but didn't expect such a great album.

I’m a huge Mark Lanegan fan. This record you can start to hear where he would end up post the Trees. I enjoy this but have always preferred the previous record.

I have two concurrent “projects” on this site and have already heard this album. I gave it a 4, and I uphold that rating. I didn’t review it however. It’s a good grunge album, vocals aren’t bad, musically decent. Some good tracks I can listen to again. Enjoyed it for the second time.

Rockzinho mt bom

While Lanegan is a great songwriter, and has an instantly identifiable voice, this album walks a line between good and okay. It's lacking a big hook song, but none of the songs are bad. I like the way some of it feels like a reinterpretation of 1960s psychadelia through a grunge lens.

Overall good album avoids the cliche grunge sound. Would like to listen again.

Really enjoyable album. Nothing mindblowing but still a very happy experience

Album 667 of 1001 Screaming Trees - Dust (1996) Rating : 4 / 5 Good album. I like the jangly guitars. A nice blend of hard rock, psychedelic rock, and grunge. Will certainly listen again.

A great rock album — nothing more, nothing less but its enough!

I really enjoyed this. It has aged much better than some of its contemporaries and doesn't feel as dated as some grunge bands of the era. I think it's down to the melodies and clarity of the vocals, which are surprising and pair well with the messy and swirling music. Great guitar work and solos. Got a swagger and doesn't get lost in dirt and murk. Quite Pearl Jam in places.

Kinda folky grunge, i vibe with it heavy

A new discovery from me, it's a great late 90s grunge mixed with psychedelic rock. There are no hits but it doesn't matter if the album flows together well and it's well written. The first part was more grunge-y, the second part more psych rock which I liked a lot, the albums was closed with a nice traditional spiritual song as a closing track.

A great album of the era that I honestly didn’t realize was as good as it is

This album is shredding pretty hard. "Dying Days" is my favorite song. I liked it a lot. There's enough variety to keep me interested the whole way. 7/10

Really fun and catchy post grunge

pretty good actually

Proggy grunge? It got kind of boring towards the middle but was still enjoyable

Classic 90's grunge, but with a twist. There are layers of 60's psychedelia and even melodic, love-letter ballads like "Look at You." If you like the genre, this will be your jam. If not, will not differentiate from their cohorts of the day.

Very fascinated that this is the only Screaming Trees album on here (Sweet Oblivion is bigger, and better, though not as fascinating), but not mad about it. It's still a great album, and Lanegan sounds as good on it as he ever did.

it's kind of funny that two of the biggest indie rock trends among younger bands right now are grunge revival and shoegaze revival because basically no one combines those pivotal 90s rock sounds to sound like this (I'm sure someone will point out 800 regional bands that do but on a national level imo only julie comes close and sounds nothing like this, basically). I only bring up the fact that few, if any, bands sound like this because I think maybe more bands should try for this sound! What do they have to lose?

Love Mark.

I wasn't sure about this album when I pulled it up on my app but I was surprised. I enjoyed it and had to go back to my history if I had listened to Screaming Trees in the past but didn't remember. I'll check out some of their other stuff.

A seriously under-rated Seattle grunge band. This is their second best album, but still quite good even if they never reached the heights of the big 4.

Must listen again

This album is awesome, just the sort of thing I was hoping to find with this list.

Finally getting around this one after owning the album, it's less the sound of grunge I expected and more general 90s rock with some western esque sounds? This album manages to sound pretty big without working too hard for it and its great. I might need more time listening to some of these songs but other than that its pretty cool, of the better "grunge" things

Von wegen eine schreiende Band, von wegen death Metal, auch wenn das Cover so wirkt. Melodisch, exotische Anklänge, virtuose Gitarrenkunst. Applaus

Really fun 90s Alt Rock. Approved.

Hadn't heard anything by these guys before. It's a well-produced album and I'm surprised that it came out in 1996. It's instrumentally more diverse and mellow than the grunge music my parents liked, and sounds a lot like what I was listening to in the 2000s. Really liked that little baroque bit in 'Sworn and Broken' and then how that song moves onto something harder with 'Witness'. Good vocals.

Favorite tracks: Halo of Ashes, Look At You, Make My Mind, Gospel Plow. I like music like this. It doesn't necessarily stand out among similar albums of the era, but it's clear to me that this was a talented group. If I heard one of these songs on the radio, I'd make a note of it, y'know? 4 stars. (On a streak of 4 stars lately!)

I liked this album a lot, very good guitar and lyrics. Drums were good too. Some spots were a little lacking but it’s ok

Surprisingly a good wave from the tsunami of grunge and alt rock from the '90s.

I enjoyed this album. Not a 5 but better then a 4

Nice one

90s mellow grunge - very enjoyable, although nothing particularly stood out

A little bit like Tool.

First time listening, I actually like this? I don't know how to describe...is decent a good term? I don't want to use the word average because there are some diversities and a couple of "oh that's kind of cool" moments at least...plus it's close to the music I enjoy and listen everyday...so Around 4/5?

I can't remember a thing about this now but I think I didn't hate it

Very 90s. Pretty good tracks. Just missing a little something. Hard to tell but you can understand why they weren't as popular. It seems like everything they did well, someone else did better

great album enjoyed it a lot

This album I listened to a few times and there isn’t much a can pin point about it. I just liked the overall sound and would definitely keep this in rotation 4/5

Nice enough, although not really groundbreaking. Reminded me a lot of Kingston Wall's "II" and Dog Society's "Test Your Own Eyes".

a pretty cool combination of psychedelic rock and grunge. sometimes it works really well and sometimes it's a little towards middling. i still appreciated its ability to thread between the loud and the ornate. not my favorite in terms of execution, but overall a neat sound concept that i really enjoyed at points.

J’ai été vraiment surpris d’aimer ça, considérant que ça sonne borderline comme du rock alternatif générique qui jouerait sur le CHOM 97.7 MONTREAL SPIRIT OF ROCK

10/1/24. I already have a favorable bias toward 90s rock and grunge, so really enjoyed this album. I have to describe this as Screaming Trees doing their best Zeppelin impression, as well as including all their favorite influences. But the results are fantastic.

I often only listen to my album of the day once. If I listen to it twice, that's a good sign, typically means I haven't heard it before and I find it interesting. I gave this three listens. Really cool stuff overall. I don't know if I've ever heard anything from this band, though I've heard their name here and there.

Pefectly cromulent 90s

Bangin!

I quite liked this it was nice and chilled. Good vocals and the guitars were pretty nice to listen to

Despite not having the biggest range in the world, Lanegan is such an expressive singer, and he fits this band so well. This is such a musically adventurous album. Room for this one to keep growing on me. 4/5

Like anything Screaming Trees or Mark Lanegan, it's extremely solid and quite good, but for me there is also something about it that is kind of forgettable. Still a cool listen! Don't think I have ever heard this whole album before.

Very impressive.

As a very occasional listener of grunge music, I came into this completely unfamiliar with Screaming Trees’ music. I didn’t really know what to expect with “Dust”, but I didn’t have particularly high hopes. It was actually the band’s seventh album, coming some four years after their most successful one (“Sweet Oblivion”). It didn’t perform anywhere near as well, and led to the band’s break-up in the early 2000’s. All that said, I’ve been pleasantly surprised: this is a solid album, and almost a revelation. Screaming Trees may well be grunge pioneers, but the classic rock purist in me was kept happy with a healthy dose of 70’s influence throughout. Acoustic guitars are all over this album, adding a nice crisp touch of definition. “Traveler” is introduced with a Mellotron, opener “Halo of Ashes” comes bursting in with a psychedelic sitar riff, and the main solo in “Sworn and Broken” is delivered on a gloriously hammy synth organ. The harder riffs rarely descend into noise unless for effect, and singer Mark Lanegan doesn’t howl, or roar: his vocals are fairly soft, always sung, often melodic, and very often harmonised- what a joy! In one hand, this is all a big positive: I’ve always found the harder edge of grunge unpalatable, so it was nice to have something to latch onto. But, on the other hand, the lack of hard edges or abrasion mean the album feels fairly safe. I can see why grunge “purists” may dismiss it as staid, or dull, or diluted. And indeed, my biggest disappointment here is the final track, “Gospel Plow”. It begins in really promising fashion, with a mantra-like refrain over a long pedal note. I was expecting a slow burn into chaos, so it’s a bit of a shame it gets fumbled with an abrupt swing into just another guitar-rock song. Still, there are enough highs here to save it: in terms of my choice cuts, “All I Know” and “Make My Mind” are both absolute stompers, while the ballad “Sworn and Broken” is a definite stand-out. Pearl Jam’s Mike McReady is drafted in to deliver a blistering solo in “Dying Days”. It’s a 7/10 rounded up to 4 stars, simply for being a grunge album that surprised me.

Mark Lanegan sounds incredible as always. He has one of those voices that’s instantly recognizable, road worn and soulful. If you love his voice then no need to worry he has a seemingly endless amount of solo projects and repeated features for bands like Mad Season and Queens of the Stone Age, and almost all of them are great. But as far as Screaming Trees goes Sweet Oblivion is my favorite with Dust not far behind.

Even though I kind of hate the cover, I liked this more than I was expecting to for not knowing much about them other than that song from the Singles soundtrack. I kept finding myself doing that raised-eyebrow cocked-head nod as if to say, "Not bad, not bad at all." I grew up on grunge in the early days of me forming my own independent musical taste, and I embraced the scene with the ardent fervor of a cult convert. I mostly embraced it from a distance since I was too young (and apparently too female) to really go to concerts or be exposed to more underground figures. But it all was so integral to my nascent self-identity at the time. And like a cult that builds in intensity before its leader self-destructs in some horrible, dramatic way, the Seattle music scene itself seemed to explode in ubiquity before exploding in a shotgun blast that fragmented it, never to feel quite the same again. The spell was broken, and it was honestly kind of emotionally painful for me to really engage with that music with the same intensity I had before. I was twelve in April '94, a baby. I thought of all of this as I listened to this album. How much music from that era have I never heard? Screaming Trees was a Washington band through and through, right in the middle of the grunge phenomenon, and yet I'm mostly ignorant of them. Yet I think that early exposure to music of that era sort of primed me to find this music comfortable and accessible. Yet there was enough interesting stuff, like the Indian elements, to keep it from sounding horribly stale to me. It seemed to have an air of maturity. Or maybe it's just that I'm more mature now.

New to me! I wasn't expecting much going into this as I've never heard of these guys. Although not the best music I've ever listened to, I found this to be enjoyable compared to many other albums on this cursed list. I liked the elements of grunge and psych that are mixed in.

The Tom Petty influence I get from this is pretty strong. It's like someone took some southern rock, and added a little grunge and psychedelia. It's a dope record. "Gospel Plow" has a little bit of what I'd love about Queens Of the Stone Age in it, as well. Favorite tracks: "Sworn And Broken", "Dying Days", "Traveler", "Gospel Plow"

With all the talk about the “Big 3” of grunge (Pearl Jam, Nirvana, & Soundgarden), I always felt Screaming Trees belonged in the conversation as leaders in the genre. . Although I liked their Sweet Oblivion album better, this is a great selection for this list as well.

Good representation of 90s rock. The upper side of 3.5 and worth listening to again.

I've heard a number of Screaming Trees songs over the years but I don't think I've ever heard one of their albums in full. Pretty great listen though.

Surprisingly good alternative rock. Hell yea.

I very much respect Mark Lanegan, and I do like is voice in many ways, but I've never really gotten attached to Screaming Trees or his work. The album I listen to the most with him on it is when he was in Queens of the Stone Age. Overall, "Dust" is a very good album, but it isn't that memorable to me besides a couple of the singles/catchier tracks. It is solid music, though. So, while I may give it a 3.5, I'm going to round up to 4.

This album is GREAT! I never listened to Screaming Trees as I always lumped them into that grunge also-ran category of downtuned grumblings, which I am not a fan of most of, but this album is tuneful, even poppy at times. Catchy and very fun to listen to. I'm a fan.

A bit lighter take on grunge, not mind blowing but solid all the way through

This made me wish I had older siblings that listened to things other than Alicia’s Attic - how did these guys pass me by? Really enjoyed it! 4.1

God gets mentioned more than I remembered, so sad about dear Mark

Y'know, I can't exactly hear what's so "grunge" about this, but for harder 90's psych rock that keeps in a lot of that folksiness—dang, it's good shit. I wish the group coulda gotten one of the albums that led to this group being named one of the earliest pioneers, alongside people like the Melvins and Mudhoney—'cuz otherwise I have no idea why this is here—but still, good tunes are good tunes, and these are good tunes.

Pretty damn good Seattle alternative.

That’s a 3.5 that I’ll round up to a 4. Sometimes, the music just sounds good to your ear. This album doesn’t do anything too special, but I… kinda just liked it a lot. Pretty consistent level of quality from top to bottom, and while there’s only one or two songs that especially stood out (for me, that’s Make My Mind and Traveler – they just kinda clicked well for some reason), there’s not really a bad song here. At worst, the first song makes for a really shaky first impression, but it recovers itself pretty quickly afterward with All I Know. It could have certainly been a little better, and while I’m not necessarily sure this has to be on the list of albums, it’s a pretty solid showcase of the middle ground of 90s rock; not big enough to be Nirvana or Pearl Jam or Metallica, but just big enough to have a willing audience and a decent spotlight. Frankly, the real miracle is that there’s not a single swear word on the album. It’s just good enough for me to give it a charitable bump up to a 4, and it’s certainly no less than a 3.

Grunge, rock. Bonita voz.

Asfett album. Jag tyckte låtarna var bra och inte särskilt repetetiva. Roligt att lyssna på och bra band i allmänhet. Bästa låtar: Halo of Ashes, All I know, Make my mind

Great album

Four stars might be a bit generous, but I liked it the more I listened to it

Interesting album I missed b/c I was at the Air Force Academy when released. It's nice alt rock. Song 1 Halo of Ashes is great. Song 2 All I Know is radio played. 4/5

Solid Rock Album Standout songs: Dying Days Traveler Dime Western

I loved Mark Lanegan (RIP) already for his contributions in Queens of the Stone Age, so I was excited to start this. His vocals soar more than I expected and are a high point in this record. And my, do these songs _soar_. "Sworn and Broken" was my favourite

Well call me pleasantly surprised! If only all the random albums I’ve never heard of were as decent as this! Loved the sound, loved the vocals, just the kinda thing I like to listen to when I’m in my rocky throwback mood. This is the reason I’m enjoying this experience so much, sometimes you find a totally unexpected gem!

I knew absolutely nothing about this band going in, and I will happily check out the rest of their music. Was this life changing? Not really. Did I enjoy it? Hell yeah.

Dang, all of these are bops. Super solid 90s rock.

Pretty standard 90s rock - I liked it

Good album, certainly gonna come back to it.

Surprised I liked this album. “Look at You” and “Dying Days” are real standouts: long songs, but no filler.

Really enjoyed it ngl

Good mostly

I had previously heard some Screaming Trees but not this album. I really enjoyed this. While much of this sounds like it is pure rock straight out of the 90s (and I don't mean that in a bad way), what pushed me to really liking it is the use of more eclectic sounds on some tracks. I was hooked from the beginning all the way to the end. I will definitely come back to this one.

Not super familiar with the screaming trees but a really good album.

Pretty firmly up my alley but I’m a huge QOTSA fan so the story checks out

I like the sound but it’s still very typical 90s rock music. Some songs were really great though.

Nothing groundbreaking about this album, it is just well executed alternative rock. I always considered this grunge, but it actually came out 5 years after Nevermind, so not exactly part of the “wave” and definitely a less angsty than some with that moniker. This album has some really great songs and hooks, not a single bad track. Mark Lanegan’s gravel voice is spot on and he kicks it into the next register at just the right times. It sometimes lacks the emotional intensity of its peers, at points even sounding monotone, but there are a number of beautifully crafted moment.

Liked this more than I did at the time, Lanegan has a voice for the ages.

This is like cooler U2. The witness was a good track.

Excellent. Just grunge enough to rock and not enough to be a turn off. Big fan of this band. Appropriate that they are on the list.

Hadn't come across these guys before, now I know they exist I'll listen some more!

surprisingly good. sidnt expwct to like it as much as i did. ailid album showing a lot of range.

I hadn't heard of Screaming Trees and after the first listen, I didn't know what to think. This isn't normally my kind of thing but there is something about this album that intrigues me. The drummer hooked me right away, I loved the drumming. I ended up listening to this a second and third time and it's really growing on me. The vocals and guitars are just right and I like their use of eastern instruments, strings and woodwinds which added an interesting dimension to those songs. (Beatles influence?) I was getting more drawn in with each listen. I was initially thinking this was a 3 - 3.5 star album but after repeated listens I can comfortably give this one a 4.

I think I remember Screaming Trees a bit from long ago... enjoyed the sound. Nice rock, folk. I'd listen again!

This was a great album I really enjoyed it Top tracks: All I Know, Dying Days

I enjoyed this one. Nice easy listening rock music

I wrote a review for this but I guess it got erased oh well (my dumbass prob just forgot to hit save). Maybe it's a sign that I should just get more to the point with these reviews. Here's the summary: - I was conflicted at first but by the end, I really dug it. - I was taken aback by the deeper, and smoother vocal delivery paired with the overall generic, but well-done grunge instrumentation. Grew on me though. - Enjoyed the psychedelic and folkier elements near the back half. - Best songs are "Witness" and "Sworn and Broken" - I think this album works best when you're not thinking too hard about it. Screaming Trees might have a new fan.

Surprisingly good

Much better than I thought it would be. The hard rock/grunge transition sounded pretty great to be honest. 3.5

Really diverse set of influences on this I think - far beyond the grunge that I'd assumed I was getting. Bits of Zeppelin, bits of the more psychedelic end of Britpop, bits of heavier rock (unsurprising, given Josh Homme's involvement). Overall, a real treat and a pleasant surprise based on the artist name and album cover, both of which scream 'horrible noise'. Will definitely listen again.

7.70/10 Top 3 Songs 1. Gospel Plow 2. Make My Mind 3. Witness

Surprising choice. Must have been >twenty years since the last time I listened to this album. I would have picked a different ST/ML album, but this is still a very good psychedelic grunge rock album. score in 1996: 4 stars score in 2024: 4 stars

decent 90's grunge

Never heard of this group, but I enjoyed the album

i like rock music

Surprising enjoyed this album. When looking at the cover not sure I would have thought that haha.

Hadn’t listened to much Screaming Trees, but had heard of them. I liked this album enough to want to check out their other albums

Decent Seattle band

I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed this album, realistically just shy of 4 stars. Felt like clean cut grunge rock. All I Know is such a banger

Was not familiar with this at all but it immediately demands a repeat listen. I guess I was expecting something bleaker or more earnest but it's really good

As a fan of Queens of the Stone Age who isn't familiar with Mark Lanegan's other output, this was a fun listen! Sounds to me like a grower -- I enjoyed it quite a bit, but as a first time listener to the band, I spent most of the runtime just acclimatizing myself to their sound. This certainly sounds less intense than either QotSA or other "grunge" artists of its time. The songwriting is solid. I don't know, it was a nice listen for a morning at work! I want to hear it again!

Lyssnade lite på skrikande träd i samma veva som Pearl Jam, soundgarden, Alice in Chains etc. Fastnade inte för det då. Denna skiva har jag inte hört. Bättre än det jag hörde då.

It was alright.

Ellensburg's own! Weird they picked Screaming Trees' last album, rather than one of their albums that put them on the map. I've never listened to this one before (with the exception of All I Know) so, cool I guess. This was maybe a 3.5 but rounding up

This Screaming Trees album feels to me to be one of their more inward-facing and most accepting of themselves. This album often sounds to me like a band confronting the truth of their unpopular influences and choosing to honor them anyway as they indulge in heaps of folky, wah-wah psychedelia around the gravity of Mark Lanegan's vocal performances. There is something I respect about this album more than Sweet Oblivion (which feels more externally directed and caught up in the times). DUST is a very Screaming Trees record it to my ears. By that I mean you can play it next to Uncle Anesthesia, Sweet Oblivion, Invisible Lantern, Buzz Factory, Even If and Especially When, or Clairvoyance and see just how the band got here.

Liking this so far. This is quality. Idk if I’d call it super influential or worth of being in the list, but it doesn’t make me wanna rip my ears out like offspring, it makes me wanna run this back. If this was in the cd deck I wouldn’t be upset. I see people saying this isn’t anything new in the “Washington sound” but I’m not super familiar with that aside from like nirvana and Pearl Jam (?) but fwiw I like this lol. Maybe just an indication I should check out this style more. Either a 3 or 4. I’ll prolly look back and regret this but this is a 4, I like it!

This album is like a Sunday drive. No real destination, but a pleasant journey.

I thoroughly enjoyed this. I was hearing things that reminded me of Pearl Jam (in only good ways) and The Cult (might be because I was listening to them today as well), but I kept warming up to the band with each song. I'm not in the headspace to get too descriptive, but I've always liked the name of this group and can't quite tell why I never checked them out before. Another for the "listen to more" pile.

I like this way more than the grunge bands they were lumped in with, though i'm not sure this is quite 4 stars. it came, it was pleasant, it went, and nothing sticks in my head. But it's a good 3.5. rounding down seems harsh. ah, fuck it, let's round up. You're welcome, Screaming Trees.

Pure 90'. Worth a relisten. Radioacktiva music

Yesterday I thought of this album as enjoyable but unremarkable. I didn't quite get finished, so when I listened to the rest today, and especially the last track, I found I liked it quite a bit more. I liked the genre-crossing in this.

This has been a pleasant surprise. I knew nothing of Screaming Trees and didn't even know they comprised later members of Queens Of The Stone Age. This is a great melodic grunge album from a time when I was listening to a lot of this kind of music so I'm surprised it passed me by but maybe I just had plenty to keep me occupied at the time. I'm glad to have found it now though. It's nothing massively groundbreaking but I am definitely keeping it on my radar for the future.

Never heard of this band. Each song is different. Wouldn't know it was the same band. I like this band! :)

Love that

Easy to listen to, though a few songs missed the mark. I liked the vibe though and want to hear more, so this gets a bump above 3*

Oli kyl hyvä 4/5

Fresh and riffs with guttural expressions that only a 90´s Seattle band could conjure.

Pleasantly surprised by this, it really rocks

Я, видимо, слушала немного в фоне. Было неплохо, но мне как-то не запомнилось, если честно

not bad at all

Slow start for mine, I sometimes think I like the idea of liking the band more than the band... the album gathers speed though and ends up a pretty good listen

Anfang langweilig wird aber immer besser ab der Hälfte

I enjoyed this! 4.

Blind album and artist. Apparently I have listened to them before but I cannot recall. Blown away for sure though. Some tracks were meh, but some indicidual tracks were very catchy and impressive. I actually liked Witness the most, not a single and not in the band's top 10 tracks on Spotify.

okay ended up really liking this! Super solid 90s grunge sound. Love it

I somehow missed Screaming Trees the first time around. But I really enjoyed this.

RIP Mark Lanegan... This is some proto-grunge amazingness right here. Another example of the need for a half-star. I know he did at least two more albums that were even better.

Quite good, got a little old after a while.

i judged this book by it’s cover and thought it was gonna be another bad grunge/punk album. thankfully it wasn’t! it was a super solid rock album through and through

You could say it's nothing special but I'm a sucker for grunge and to me this is a great grunge album with a folky twang.

MARK LANEGAN RIP

Really cool, varied sound. Will definitely listen to more from Screaming Trees

Extremely good. I can see why this would have been a big album for the time

Screaming Trees is a new one for me. A big chunk of early 90's rock is outside my wheelhouse, but I enjoyed listening to this album quite a bit. The overall slow soulful brand of grunge / folk was a treat. Highlights: All I Know - This is a great song. Very catchy. The verses and chorus are slow, with a juxtaposition of quick syncopated pre chorus bridges. Look At You - I loved the melody on this track. Dying Days - Heavy instrumentals with slow vocals work great here. Dime Western - I'm a hoe for bass, and this songs bassline is top tier. Lowlights: Traveler - This track didn't appeal to me a ton. I like the sound but it gets too repetitive. Final Thoughts: Overall quite an enjoyable album. Nothing really groundbreaking or genre defining here, but nothing objectionable either. I'd definitely listen to it again.

Great music, next to one of my favourite voices in the grunge genre

Pretty good album. I need to pick this one up.

Loved it. Very very relaxing

Great guitar hooks, okay vocals

Cool album. Need to revisit for sure

Pretty good!

I knew exactly one Screaming Trees song before this, "I Nearly Lost You," which I liked well enough. This album was not amazing, but pretty darn good. I might listen again.

I liked it

not bad

Another one that kind of surprised me

Halo of Ashes- 3.8/5 All I Know- 4.4/5 Look at You- 5/5 Dying Days- 4.6/5 Make My Mind- 3.7/5 Sworn and Broken- 4.8/5 Witness- 3.4/5 Traveler- 3.6/5 Dime Western- 4.9/5 Gospel Plow- 4.2/5 Total- 4.2/5

This album was made at the height of Grunge but it has many stylistic elements, especially in instrumentation, that reminds one of psychedelic rock. They use Indian instruments or the mellotron, popularized by prog rock. In some way you might think this album was created by time travellers. Then again often some of the typical vocals and - how should I call it? - singing styles of that time break through. Overall a pretty cool album with a better later half I find.

Was putting this album off for a while and i immediately regretted that. Very good

I enjoyed this a lot, I wasn't expecting. Nice surprise.

Grunge, rock. Bonita voz.

Loved this. Vocal and lyrics were so smooth, plus solid musically. Album cover was misleading. My first full listen to this album. Not sure why.

Grunge, rock. Bonita voz.

<3 screaming trees

I’m as surprised as you are, dear reader, that a grunge-adjacent record from 1996 is getting a 4 from me, but the powers of Mark Lanegan seem to trump any of my genre or decade biases.

It says a lot for the over simplification of the grunge genre that Screaming Trees, Melvins and Soundgarden were at one point under the same banner. Mark Lanegan's voice is smoother than silk and is the main reason you should listen to this album. But the band also has some real chops and this is a real slice of early 90's rock/alternative.

Based off the band name I thought this album would be a bit more intense but turned out to be a nice collection of consistent rock songs. My issue with this album though is that there’s not a lot of variation, the songs are nice for the most part but I find it hard to distinguish some of the songs, especially in the middle of the song, when casually listening. Apart from that I do have some standouts, in particular the guitar playing on ‘Dying days’ is great to hear and overall the lyrical performance is very nice too especially on ‘Look at you’. Only song I wasn’t a big fan of is ‘Traveler’, felt as if there was going to be some climax to the song but never really delivered

Never heard of em before but this is a solid listen, very 90s grunge riffs. Would listen again, 4.5/5

I liked this a lot more than I expected to. It's pretty standard grunge on the poppier side, but it's well executed. I don't love the vocals but they're not the most grating I've ever heard and the music makes up for it. Favorite track: Dying Days

I came into this expecting something similar to Kyuss or QOTSA because I had heard the band worked with Josh Homme a bunch, but never checked them out. This comes across a lot more chill than I expected. - my favorite song from the album is probably "Make my Mind" - Really didn't expect a random organ/synth solo in "Sworn and Broken"

Very very 90s. That’s not a bad thing, it’s good 90s sounding music. Just sounds exactly like the 90s. Sounds like it influenced many late late 90s early 2000s

Nice find

Solid 90's alternative. Can't give those less than 4 in general, and this was good, but not like all time good. Not hearing Lanegan as raspy when he does other projects.

I don't think I've ever heard of Screaming Trees before, which is a shame, because I think I would have really enjoyed a lot of the songs on here when if I had listened to it when it came out. I listened to a lot of classic rock as a kid, with psychedelic rock being some of my favorite stuff, and I really love how this album incorporates that sound. The vocals, lyrics, and instrumentation are all really great. 'Halo of Ashes,' 'All I Know,' and 'Sworn and Broken' were my favorite tracks. I think this a standout for the grunge or post-grunge genre, and I would definitely listen to it again.

very good. Not my day-to day type but tres bon!

Man, I don't know that I've ever heard an album that sounded so much like the year it came out. Everything about "Dust" screams 1996. It's a nearly perfect blend of Soundgarden, U2, Alice in Chains, and Collective Soul. It's kind of wild that I've never heard of them before, honestly. I enjoyed it way more than I should have. Probably going to need to revisit it, in fact.

This band is very often overlooked in the shadow of grunge towers like Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, Alice In Chains, and so on. But this band is equally good in its own right! They're quite the powerhouse, fusing, bluesy hard rock, psychedelic and grunge. Mark Lanegan's smoky soulful vocals roaring on every song. But Gary Lee Connor's guitar work is also very impressive! The song themes range from addiction, to unreachable love Should've given this band a spin a long time ago! - Glorified in the dying of the sun. - Her ghost hides in my eyes, in the night. In a way she's haunting me, I'm wanting her still. - Because you're this dream I'm hanging on. And I'm trying to make the dawn. Key tracks: Halo Of Ashes, All I Know, Look At You, Dying Days, Sworn And Broken, Witness. 7,5 out of 10

Look At You is a good track. Witness is solid. All I Know...very 90s.

Really enjoyed it with very little expectation. Will listen again for sure.

Had never heard of this group but I liked them. Good mix of grunge + folksy-ness.

Not heard before and ended up listening 4 times back to back. Could hear it's influence on other records since. Really good.

Can’t believe I didn’t know 1 song on this. I haven’t listened to a ton of Screaming Trees, but thought I’d have some familiarity. I’ve always revered Mark Lannegan despite not knowing his/their catalogue well. This album did not disappoint. It took 2 listens to catch, but there are some fantastic songs on here. Very underrated in comparison to everything else that was big in 1996. I’d venture to guess that this is their most accessible album, and I wouldn’t call it grunge. But it’s interesting and unique. Great melodies. Lannegan’s voice is amazing. I’ll be coming back and I want to explore more of their back catalogue. P.S., so I went and listened to ‘Other Worlds,’ their first EP from 1985. Simply astounded at what they put out then. Wow, this band will be getting much more of my ear. 1 = bad 2 = average 3 = good 4 = great 5 = outstanding

Pretty good, not much stand out but works well as an album

Awesome.

Quite nice this. I like his voice. It seems pretty solid all the way through. I'll have to check out their other albums, as I hadn't really heard of these guys before.

Emaciated court jester album cover.

Sounds like 90s rock. Overall nice, nothing screamed out as a great song, but would like to relisten.

I'd never heard of this - and really like it.

Luistert prima weg, 3.5 ster.

I wasn't sure what I would make of this album having never heard of Screaming Trees and expecting it to be a bit too chaotic/punk for my taste. I am enjoying the opening track surprising amounts with the Indian sound I love so much from tabla and sitar. I also really like his voice and the general sound and feel so far. This whole album has a vaguely familiar sound and feel to it somehow... It makes me think of Eddie Vedder music even though it doesn't sound exactly like it, similar voice maybe. But also it reminds me of a 90s soundtrack, very familiar and comforting. I've not intently listened to all of the words on this album but Look at You is extremely poetic and it's stunning, a real highlight! There's good variety here too, I prefer the more unusual tracks to the more basic rock ones like Dying Days for example is not my fave.

Gonna have to go back to this bad boy. Such a wild ride.

Great band, guitar and voice switch so good.

I really enjoyed listening to this album. It had songs with a variety of energy and tempos. But all of it was pleasant to listen to and not abrasive or noisy. That sounds like damning praise of something bland, but it isn't. It is creative enough to avoid being nondescript. I would definitely listen to it again, which puts it into the 4 category. Scale: 5 - My absolute favorites. 4 - Albums I like. 3 - I enjoyed listening to it but wouldn't seek it out. 2 - Didn't like. 1 - Absolute shit.

Its a bit Rock for Radiohead fans, but you cant deny its well written

Solid 90s classic.

This album’s a GEM!

How did I miss this at the time??

I didn't expect much from this, but I actually really enjoyed it. These dudes kinda combined all of the 90s bands into one, unique sound. There were shades of Nirvana, Collective Soul, Our Lady Peace, REM, and a few others. Really interesting listen. I didn't know a single song before I hit play but ended up humming or singing along to almost all of them.

This album was a big surprise. Great vocals on top of wandering melodic guitar, each song was uniquely addictive in its own special way. I played it twice and had never heard it before. It’s one of the albums I’m sad that took me 26 years to discover when I should have been listening to this in college.

Classic grunge, can’t believe I’ve never heard of them before

A throughly enjoyable, rocking set that doesn't overstay its welcome and leaves plenty of marks along the way, with one foot out the grunge door and another foot in the post-grunge one. A pity this was the last one, for they could have done greater albums if they went down this route. Favorites: All I Know, Look at You, Dying Days, Sworn and Broken, Traveller, Gospel Plow.

I expected a lame QotSA imitation, but it was so much better than that. Very interesting and unique arrangements. Best track: Traveler

RIP Mark Lanegan. One of the most interesting figures of the 90s Seattle scene. Such an incredibly versatile voice with an equally incredibly versatile career. I really haven’t given this band in particular enough of my time, but this album is very good and deserves more appreciation. 4.5 stars.

Miss you, Mark.

Beautiful album

RIP Mark Lanegan

Wow, this album kicked some ass. I am truly shocked at how good this was. Halo of ashes was a good opener but the next song, all i know, blew me away. Thats one of the best songs I've heard on ANY of these albums. I was just lost in this album after that song. Great rock vibes and great guitar work. Rockin' 8/10

enjoyed very much

I know a few Screaming Trees songs (not any from this album) that I've thought were really good but I've never dug deeper into their discography. After listening to this I feel like I've made a terrible mistake that I'm going to have to rectify immediately. This is as good as any 90s music from the Pacific Northwest that I've heard. It's grungy (for whatever that is worth) but the little psychedelic touches and pop hooks make it really stand out. It's a shame or at least confusing to me that they weren't bigger.

A rock record that shows the power of holding something back and staying in control, of embracing the mid-tempo, as opposed to playng every note as fast and loud as possible, and amping up every song to be the ultimate in epic-osity. "Sworn and Broken" is best cut on a clunker-free collection. The interesting touches of strings, bells, synths, acoustic instruments, etc. sparkle up the textures and add to the interest. The playing is solid all the way around, and frequently inspired (without being over the top [bears repeating]) and the vocals are state-of-the-art cool. Yes, it's got a distinctly mid-90s vvibe, but the highly effective execution makes it worth knowing today.

This is the first i’ve heard of Screaming Trees so i’m not expecting much. Being labelled as ‘grunge’ is something i can enjoy about this record as i rather enjoy grunge music. Tracks i liked: all i know, dying days, sworn and broken I liked this record but there wasn’t many standout tracks. They all sounded similar. Despite this i still enjoyed this record and probably would revisit it. 4/5

Kinda grungy, kinda pyschedelic, all round enjoyable

This album kind of snuck up on me. I was initially not impressed, but by halfway through started really paying attention and immediately played it through a second time. Really good overall. There are hints of gospel in lots of the songs, and I love how smoothly its integrated with the rest of the alternative rock sound of the late 90's that's pretty unmistakable.

This album was very good. It has a bit of the Pearl Jam - Ten sound, but with a lot of other things going on. I listened through twice and if it were 1996 it would be in my regular rotation. 4/5

My Lanegan experience will probably differ from most. I heard the big Screaming Trees songs and some of his solo stuff before, and of course his QOTSA material, but I only really gained an interest in his work after reading his book. His stuff with Queens was clearly their best and I really like his solo work (Bubblegum is a 10/10 record), but the Trees are mostly just good. From what I recall, their previous album is the one he was proudest of, and the group was largely disconnected here. There are some solid ideas here, and I think everybody gives a solid performance, but it does sound like a band who’ve expired their need for each other. It’s a good listen, likely not their best. B

Didn't finish the whole album but sounds like so SOLID psych rock

Loved when the keyboards augmented Lanegand voice. Really atmospheric and quite quiet for how I remember the era.

Vraiment bon album. Le mélange d'influences grunge et alternatif très 90s est super bon. Les compositions sont très bonnes.

Pretty good album. Definitely a 90’s grunge band which I tend to enjoy.

Pretty good - very similar to Pearl Jam.

Ordem natural para sentir a força do grunge com um dos vocais mais impressionantes.

No wind up, the first song puts you in directly in the middle of their sound, in media res. I’m really digging this. Grunge-y, alt-rock. Strands of Pearl Jam, Soundgarden.

Cool new find from the mid 90s. Lots of interesting sounds mixed with heavy grunge guitar--- with a little sitar and middle eastern vibes. Fave tracks: Look at You, Witness, Dime Western, Sworn and Broken (cool organ solo), Gospel Plow Heck there is something to like on all the tracks. Feels a bit disjointed but enjoyable.

Didn’t expect to like it but it was great.

Solid dive bar rock from QOTSA vocalist Mark Lanegan.

I hadn’t heard this one, but I liked it a lot. Mark Lanegan had a way of writing these pop gems that they managed to dress up in a coat of indie-cred. I like it.

A sound I am familiar with but surprising and not a band I recall but apparently was on the Singles soundtrack so must have heard them at one point. Quite liked it ...added a few tracks to my growing playlist - Sworn and Broken and Traveler were my personal picks

Man, you guys are coming out swinging today. I like Love Battery, too, but I don't think there's many from this era who can touch Mark Lanegan's voice. I guess you either like it or you don't. I love it! First three songs here are fantastic melodic grunge, and actually maybe I'll take back what I wrote on Neil Young. In some ways I can in fact hear shades and tendrils of "Ragged Glory" in this album. The rest of the album doesn't have the same hooks as those first three tracks, but I think they're a good precursor to where Lanegan was going with his solo stuff. Again, I'm won over by the voice and even when the songs weren't the strongest it still felt like I had a comfy blanket in my lap. In the off chance Alex likes this I'll recommend The Gutter Twins collab Lanegan did with Greg Duli of the Afghan Whigs. It's darker and smokier. And of course he's one of the standout components of the Queens of the Stone Age's classic "Songs for the Deaf." Also, guys he's dead! Lanegan died in February of this year and I feel like it barely made a blip in the news cycle. It makes me sad and really surprised, given he seems like a dude who other musicians adored. Where's the memorial concert?? I blame stupid Covid. Oh well.

Grunge. Hard rock. Muy bueno!

Pretty good, been meaning to give the screaming trees a try

Really loads better than expected, thought it would be Pearl Jam sequence moaning but really enjoyable.

I listened to this a week ago and forgot to write a review. All I remember is that I was keen to explore further.

This is one of those 90s bands that I never really got into when they were actually around. The sound of this album certainly takes me back. The Screaming Trees are definitely a gentler sort of alternative rock band than many of their more popular counterparts. It's a shame they didn't get more attention. The songs are well-composed, and the lyrics were good as of my first pass. Definitely worth a listen, particularly for those of us who came of age during the 90s 4/5

Musically speaking the initial references to Indian music were the most prominent. But the rest is also solid, or the strings are digging their way into my brain and convincing me of as much. Screaming Trees don't have the harmonic depth of Nirvana, but I much prefer the singing and country influence evident here to the band's contemporaries. The eruption of pleasant surprises like the organesque piano licks helped me be sure in another discovery.

Fantastic album. How people don't talk about this in the same breath as Ten or Nevermind is beyond me.

jag tyckte det va cool typ hela albumet höll. Witness är favoriten.

Grunge’s forgotten hero’s

I don't know why I wasn't already a fan of this. I should have been. It's slap bang in the middle of my wheelhouse, right time, right sound, just like all my favourite bands. Anyway, I love it, and have wasted the past 26 years knowing nothing of it. This will be remedied asap.

An excellent and varied heavy rock record without a single weak track. A wall of noise that stays just the right side of the line to avoid becoming a dirge. The record is further elevated by Mark Lanegan's unique and soulful vocals. Really enjoyed this and will likely return. Rating: 4/5 Playlist track: All I Know Date listened: 18/04/22

Big, blowsy and beautiful, this is state-of-the-art late ‘90s rock from a fully mature band. No real clear hit jumps out but it’s solid from top to bottom, with every track offering something of interest. The mini-solo guitar flourishes in nearly every song are grace notes amid very interesting instrumentation and production choices (strings, bells, synths, acoustic instruments, etc.). The mood and tempo stays in a comfortable middle range with both hard edges and mellower moments to up the drama. This just sounds great, and is well worth knowing (not to mention another listen). 3.7 / 4

Surprisingly good album. Great stuff from Lanegan

interessante

4/04/2022 Today's Album: "Dust" by Screaming Trees - This album takes influences from multiple genres in a really appealing and well-assembled manor. This grungy, psychedelic, folky, bluesy, and hard rocky LP at points sounds like early Radiohead, Red Hot Chile Peppers, Doves, early Pink Floyd, and even Lynyrd Skynyrd or CCR. It is obvious though, that this is a group of talented musicians that are using these inspirations to create some amazing tracks. Not only do these ideas seem to flow from one to another very seamlessly, but the production of these tracks is great and there are a bunch of really great instrumental performances throughout the mix. Despite the different genres used throughout the track list, the instrumentation stays relatively similar throughout, which gives this project a great feeling of consistency. The vocals sound really nice; the album cover is really cool and interesting; the chord patterns may feel a bit re-used, but the soul and energy is there and every track ends up feeling unique. Some tracks don't catch my attention as much as others, but those who don't serve as nice interludes between some of the really dazzling moments, like at around 2 minutes into Sworn and Broken with the dazzling synth solo it has. Given this album came out in 1996, I think it might be fair to assume that this sound inspired many other bands (most obviously Doves from my perspective). The final track, Gospel Plow is a little more experimental than the others and it runs for about 6 minutes, but I think it's a really fantastic track that incorporates a lot of the sounds they were using in the rest of this album. It almost sounds like if Tool in the best way, with these really cool chugging bass lines and some eerie synth notes. It ends the album in a really killer way and cements this record in my mind as one of the most solid albums of the 90s, showcasing everything that was big in that era from alt rock to grunge to even classic rock revivalism. I think this album is a must listen for anyone who likes moodier 90s rock with excellent performances and a lot of melodic character. There are some points that aren't for me as much as others, but I can still see the value in what they were creating and their hits make up for it all 10 fold. Score: 8.5/10 Highlights: Halo Of Ashes, All I Know, Look At You, Dying Days, Sworn and Broken, Traveler, Dime Western, Gospel Plow

-"Dime Western" has a riff that sound like a Dream Theater riff -Actually I think it sounds like the riff from "Heaven On Their Minds" from "Jesus Christ Superstar" -Very cool psychedelic-Beatles-esque-sitar-like stuff going on in "halo of Ashes" -"Gospel Plow" starts spooky and then picks up in quite a cool way -Overall nice album with some cool spooky-slowish rock with some nice heavier moments throughout

Pleasantly surprised. More musical than muddy: maybe grunge is the wrong classification? Better a 3 and a 4 but we’ll round this one up as I was expecting a much more miserable ride.

Pleasantly surprised to see some love for this band and this album in particular. While not popular at the time it 's a good album, Witness is such a great tune and maybe my fav Trees tune.

Album was really solid. It is a classic 90's Alt Rock album for sure.

not band at all

Never heard the Screaming Trees before but I had heard of them. I'll have to check out more of their music.

The alternative side of grunge era. Much better in my opinion.

I really liked this.

Pretty good!

Really charmed by this. There are occasional quiet moments that keep it from being just thrashing guitars the whole time - and those moments help us hear and appreciate the thrashing guitars. Interesting to know that Josh Homme toured with them for a couple years. You can really hear how it may have influenced him - I especially hear it in Mark Lanegan's singing style. And I'm sure the influence went both ways since Lanehan joined QOTSA.

I genuinely enjoy this album. The first few songs are very grunge meets alternative of the mid-90s, but at Dying Days it starts giving me 70s rock vibes so I like the shift in tone! Super easy to listen to. I’d say the opening song is my least favorite.

Pretty good discovery from this genre that I hadn't heard before. A death album that doesn't sound like death.

This is an album that I should've been more familiar with than I am. It must have come out right when I was getting out of listening to new grunge, and just completely missed my radar. I liked it, though, and will isten to it again!

I really enjoyed this! Note to self: Can’t judge an album by its cover…

Enjoyed it a lot. Bunch of different sounds that make the songs stand out. There's some grunge, some psychedelic rock, some experimental. My favorite songs were the ones that went like "bwowowow". The instrumental on Dime Western is great. Not for everyone, but it's a yes from me.

pretty art but expecting a 3 was better than i thought. went quickly

Not actually terrible!

Pretty good. All songs are enjoyable but not mind blowing.

Ik kende dit niet. Wel goeie muziek, maar mocht misschien iets minder 'braaf'

Old school grunge. Great vocals and I particularly like All I Know and Dime Western

I loved this, this feels so foundational

Criminally underrated album Witness is a masterpiece

I had never heard of this band beforehand, but I really enjoyed this. A great mixture of psychedelic rock and Indian instrumentation. Really strong production. Shame they didn't keep going.

Transported back nearly 30 years by the distinctive sound

A good mature rock album but not as good as their previous album Sweet Oblivion

not my kind of music but still a decent listen - enjoyed the 2nd half more

Pretty enjoyable.

Goeie indierock oosterse invloeden, heel sferisch Nirvana achtig

Solid 90s grunge

Good stuff. Managed to surprise me more than once.

Not bad, but very 90s. Not much my style. Well mixed and good instrumentals, though. The album is valleyed, with the best songs at the start and end.

Good album

I'm way more familiar with Mark Lanegan's solo career, so it's interesting to hear his voice sounding a little younger. This was apparently their final album? I should dig into their back catalog. Fave track - "Make My Mind" or "Witness", I reckon....
