Reviews (page 2 of 8)
Off to a good start. Never heard of this but right up my alley. Just read about Marc Lanegan passing. I really love this. Pretty perfect.
Gratamente sorprendido
This album hits many of the notes I really enjoy in albums: multiple genres, occasionally in the same song, vocal harmonies, psychedelic guitar solos, thoughtful lyrics. Maybe I haven’t been exposed to much Grunge music but if this is how a lot of those albums sound I wouldn’t be complaining.
Really enjoyed this, good mix of grunge with straight 90s rock, with a sort of indie vibe In places too. Always hesitant to give 5 stars but this hit on a good day. 4.5/5
Very good music, great melody and a very good voice
Although I was aware of both the Trees and Lanegan prior to Dust, there’s no doubt that this was the album that got me into Lanegan. I bought it around the time of release based on the Kerrang! review as well as the hype sticker on the CD which said something along the lines of… The psychedelic rock classic that Soundgarden and Smashing Pumpkins always dreamed of making … as probably my fave 2 bands in ‘96, I had to hear this and whilst I largely didn’t agree with that particular assessment, I did fall in love with the brilliant, soulful, gospel quality of it all. Everyone is in superb form but the keys are the extra dimension here which elevates it to something really special, alongside some masterful production by George Drakoulias. Kerrang! subsequently named it their album of the year. It’s my fave Trees album and it’d be up there for my fave Lanegan album.
Excellent new fine. Nirvana meets pop.
Awesome! 90’s rock
Day 29 Was surprised to see this on here, listened to it loads back in the 90s but hadn’t heard it for years. An underrated gem 9/10 Highlights All I Know Dying Days Witness
I’m 48 and grew up with Pearl Jam, Nirvana and Soundgarden. I knew very little of those grunge bands that came before them. Only discovered Screaming Trees in the last year and I love them, so this is a biased rating!
# In-Depth Review of Screaming Trees' *Dust* (1996) ## 🎵 Overview *Dust* is the seventh and final studio album by the American rock band Screaming Trees, released on June 25, 1996. Despite being part of the grunge movement, the album showcases a distinct evolution in the band's sound, blending **psychedelic rock**, **blues**, and **folk influences** with their signature hard-edged style . Produced by George Drakoulias, the album is often regarded as the band's most cohesive and mature work, even though it was their commercial swansong . --- ## 📝 Lyrics and Themes ### Lyrical Depth and Emotional Resonance The lyrics on *Dust*, primarily penned by vocalist **Mark Lanegan**, explore themes of **melancholy, loss, addiction, and existential reflection**. Lanegan's struggles with substance abuse and personal turmoil are palpable throughout the album, giving the songs a raw, confessional quality . Tracks like *Witness* and *Sworn and Broken* delve into spiritual crisis and emotional brokenness, with lines like *"I think I'm going to die"* and *"senseless, insane, and alone"* echoing Lanegan's inner battles . ### Narrative and Imagery The album employs rich, often dark imagery, drawing on **blues traditions** and **mythological references**. For example: - *Halo of Ashes* references death and resurrection with the line, *"I been a long time away, with one foot in the grave"* . - *Gospel Plow* incorporates elements of traditional spirituals, reflecting a search for redemption . - *Dying Days* mourns the loss of friends and the decline of the grunge era, likely alluding to the deaths of Kurt Cobain and other Seattle scene figures . --- ## 🎶 Music and Sound ### Musical Style and Instrumentation *Dust* marks a departure from the band's earlier punk and psychedelic influences, embracing a more **melodic and textured sound**. The album features: - **Eastern influences**, such as the use of sitar on *Halo of Ashes* and tablas on *Gospel Plow* . - **Blues-infused guitar work** by Gary Lee Conner, complemented by Barrett Martin's diverse percussion (e.g., congas, djembe) . - **Guest contributions**, including Pearl Jam's Mike McCready on the solo for *Dying Days* and Benmont Tench (Tom Petty's Heartbreakers) on keyboards . ### Standout Tracks 1. **All I Know**: The album's lead single combines catchy hooks with Lanegan's soulful vocals, reflecting on missed opportunities . 2. **Dying Days**: A powerful track with a blistering guitar solo and haunting lyrics about decay and loss . 3. **Gospel Plow**: An epic closer featuring tribal rhythms and a psychedelic outro, symbolizing a journey from darkness to light . --- ## 🎛 Production Quality ### Strengths - **George Drakoulias' production** lends the album a warm, organic feel, balancing the band's gritty roots with polished accessibility . - The **layering of instruments** (e.g., mellotron, strings, acoustic guitars) adds depth without overwhelming the songs . - **Andy Wallace's mixing** (known for his work on Nirvana's *Nevermind*) gives the album a crisp, modern sheen . ### Weaknesses - Some critics argue that the production **smooths out too many of the band's rough edges**, potentially diluting their raw energy . - The **eclectic instrumentation** (e.g., sitar, tablas) may feel forced or overly experimental to some listeners . --- ## 🌌 Themes and Influence ### Themes *Dust* revolves around themes of: - **Mortality and decay**: References to death, ghost towns, and dying days permeate the album . - **Redemption and hope**: Despite its darkness, the album offers glimpses of light, as in *Traveler*'s journey *"from the darkness to the light"* . - **Nostalgia and loss**: The album serves as a eulogy for the grunge era and the band's own decline . ### Influence and Legacy - *Dust* is often cited as a **precursor to Mark Lanegan's solo career**, which further explored blues and folk traditions . - The album's fusion of psychedelia and grunge influenced later bands like **Queens of the Stone Age** (with whom Lanegan collaborated) . - Despite its commercial failure, *Dust* was critically acclaimed and named **Kerrang!'s Album of the Year in 1996** . --- ## ✔️ Pros and Cons ### Pros 1. **Lyrical depth**: Lanegan's poignant and introspective lyrics elevate the album beyond typical grunge fare . 2. **Musical diversity**: The blend of blues, folk, and psychedelia creates a unique and timeless sound . 3. **Production polish**: Drakoulias and Wallace give the album a rich, layered production that rewards repeated listens . 4. **Emotional resonance**: The album's themes of loss and redemption are universally relatable . ### Cons 1. **Lack of commercial appeal**: The album's experimental nature may have limited its mainstream success . 2. **Inconsistent pacing**: Some tracks (e.g., *Look at You*) are seen as weaker links, disrupting the album's flow . 3. **Overproduction**: Critics argue that the album's polish sometimes muffles the band's raw energy . --- ## 🎯 Conclusion *Dust* is a **testament to Screaming Trees' artistic growth** and a fitting swansong for one of grunge's most underappreciated bands. While it may not have achieved the commercial success of its peers, its lyrical depth, musical innovation, and emotional honesty ensure its enduring legacy. For fans of grunge, psychedelic rock, or Mark Lanegan's solo work, *Dust* remains an essential listen .
5*
Possibly my favorite discovery in this list. I have always loved Nearly Lost You and Lanegan's voice in general, but never really dug deep into their catalogue. Just fantastic all the way through.
RIP Mark Lanegan, let’s go. I have to assume I’m not the first person in history to know mark primarily from his work with Queens, so it was a little strange to hear him sing over major chords. Much more upbeat than I thought Mark Lanegan in a band called Screaming Trees would be. This is very good. Once my perspective shifted I had a really good time with this album. Stand outs being the hits of course but also dying days, that mccready solo is so tight. This is a very high 4 for me, possibly a 5.
So Queensy, I get why Josh Homme had Mark Lanegan featured so many times, natural match. This was a really good record with great guitar tones all over this thing. Songs were good, I liked the heaviness with the psychedelic influences. I'm gonna have to check out more of this band, always confused them with Porcupine Tree. Soft 5/5
4.5 rounded up spongebob levitating dot gif highlights: halo of ashes, all i know, make my mind, traveler (mar 12 2026)
This is the 173rd album I’m rating. Don't know the album or the band but that album cover is incredible. Adding to my Playlist - Halo of Ashes, All I Know, Look at You, Dying Days, Make my Mind, Sworn and Broken, Witness, Traveler, Dime Western, and Gospel Plow. Not Adding to my Playlist - Nothing. All in all I liked 10/10 songs. About as good as In Utero.
This was a pleasant surprise. They should have been treated in the top rank of grunge.
I have heard this album before, it’s one of my husbands favorite.
I have once again failed to defeat the 90s music allegations
this album is legitimately EXACTLY what I was looking for when I started this project. Words cannot express how satisfying it was to drive off the airfield listening to All I Know.
I had heard of Screaming Trees before, but I don't think I know any of their songs. I really loved the sound of this album and was grooving along the entire time. The psychedelic sound mixed with grunge was great, with lots of variation from track to track, but just a really well-written and well-recorded sound throughout. I listened to it twice, five stars.
Rip Mark Lanegan
Great album. Mark Lanegan was one of the great voices of the Seattle scene. Also love the inventive guitar work of Gary Lee Conner. This band should have been bigger than they were.
grungy & great
My ears are still ringing like an hour after listening to this in my car because I just couldn’t turn it down. I see this classified as grunge, and from reading it seems like these guys were part of that scene. But to me this felt a lot more energetic, less morose, more like an extension of American hard rock, a la Iggy pop. Full and heavy but not weighed down? Really good music to drive to. Maybe unremarkable technically, but sometimes I just want to rock my dick off on the drive home. Maybe going out on a limb here, but can o my go with my heart…
A really good listen. It's very "of it's time" with its mid 90's rock sound, which is not a bad thing. They nailed the vibe. Adding to my collection.
Great listen
This was awesome. Lots of catchy tracks that were fun to rock out to
Other than seeing Mark Lanegan open for Nick Cave once, I had nothing more than a passing familiarity with this band. I thought this album was great. Trippy and energetic songs either real pathos in the lyrics. I’ll listen to more from this band for sure.
holy smokes.. what an album! i take back my comment about nirvana being the only good grunge band…
A fantastic album from a legendary band. RIP Mark Lanegan.
This thing surprised me because I did not expect to like it. It's a grunge garage album done extremely well. It's well produced, the guitarist takes a page from the psychedelic and progressive rock of the 70s and 80s and meshes it making this really polished grunge sound. I also like that it's clean enough it never feels too cringe, it gets its nasty and evil messaging not from extreme imagery or over the top scary sounds. It's rooted in reality, the darkness of spirituality and the world. All I know is great, Witness is the best song to me and probably one of the best songs this list has brought me, the grunge mixed with the psychey guitar is so sick. Gospel Plow really ends the album strongly, the percussion is creative and the song progresses in a fun way. This whole thing is a lot of fun and it really feels like a cool kind of rebellion that was really making interesting music. A real answer to the punk music coming from the UK. This is the kind of adventurous music kids can aspire to make.
Really enjoyed this album. I don’t think I was overly aware of them at the time. Reminder me a lot of soundgarden.
Never heard of this band, but really enjoyed the album. Saved for listening again.
I loved this - specially in the context of 90s music this is absolutely incredible
Actually really good
Heck yeah. I smiled when this album came up. This one's a familiar friend. I threw Nearly Lost You on plenty of mix tapes back in the day. I've listened to these guys off and on over the last 30 years. It wasn't until Lanegan passed and I revisited their catalog that I really connected. This album is brilliant. It hits the nostalgia trip to a much younger me. This will be on all day.
Early grunge pioneer album
this is one of my favorite albums from this site in a long time tbh
Very nice!
Really good
Eine Entdeckung, solider British Rock den ich nicht kannte. Cool!
Pleasantly surprised by this. Not "grungy" at all, thankfully.
I may need another listen to this album, just in case there is something I am missing. I had heard of Screaming Trees but not heard a single note by them. This is (another) case of a band's album being in this book and me not entirely understanding why that would be. This is like after-grunge pre-post-grunge rock. I like a lot of what I heard here even if this isn't music that will shock the world with its originality. The album slows down a bit towards the end with Traveler, Dime Western and the slow fade-out of Gospel Plow. The sound is almost not grunge enough to be grunge and almost too grunge to really be listened to as a musical artifact from 1996. The sound does tickle the part of me that loves college rock from when I was in college, but I also feel like this music isn't relevant anymore. So sure, "Dust" is on the list and I like it but can't tell you why.
I really enjoyed that album
Gorgeous songs, massive sound, just a fabulous album by Lanegan & co.
I don't understand the bad reviews. Had very low expectations but I'm captivated and listened to this album multiple times. "Look at you" is a very good song
Love this album
Really good, and always interesting to see what was going on elsewhere when Britain was looking inward. Not what I expected from Mark Lanegan, but I really enjoyed it anyway
Didn’t know what to expect from this one, pleasantly surprised
I really liked this album and thought all of the songs were pretty good.
I think that I must confuse Screaming Trees for a different band, because by name, I think that I don’t like the band…and this encounter is not the only time that I had done this. But I think I just don’t really know this band. I really liked this album!
I completely missed Screaming Trees back in the day. This is really good! And I see that they're from around here and two of them died recently when they were about my age and for some reason that makes me like it even more. I really like this one.
Here is a band that I wish I had discovered in 1996 - because if I had this would have really spoken to me. The psychedelic grunge land this band inhabits is established in the opening track “Halo of Ashes” with its strong middle-eastern sound, sitar and all. It’s one of my favorite tracks on the album. Other highlights on this album for me include “Dying Days”, “Make My Mind”, “Witness”, “Traveler” and “Dime Western” (love the drumming and touches from the Middle East again!). The other contender for favorite song on the album is “Sworn and Broken.” It’s got a lot packed in there with its melancholic sentiment and that great 60s organ solo at the end. “Gospel Plow” is a fascinating way to close an album. So satisfying! The more I listened to this album today (I’m on my sixth listen at the moment), the more impressed I am. You can’t help but note the interesting choices. A 90s “grunge” band with sitar, 60s organ and flute solos… why didn’t I discover this sooner? If I had a time machine I’d go back and slip this CD into my 1996 self’s stereo and maybe Screaming Trees would be one of my favorite bands today. I guess I’ll have to be content to keep this high in the rotation and start checking out their other albums.
I can’t believe I’ve never heard of these guys
Amazing grunge album. I'd listen to this all day.
Stupidly good.
nice
Really liked this album, from a band I don't ever recall hearing about. But makes complete sense Josh Homme was a touring musician for this album. Nice hard emotive sound to it.
That's heroin for ya, folks.
It’s a solid album, can’t believe I missed this when I was growing up
Folk Metal! Yes. What's not to love!
Great album
Yes.
Great grunge record
A cracking grunge fest.
very cool
MARK LANAGANNN! HEEEY
Not totally sold on the singing, but it's still a great album filled with varied, interesting and well crafted songs.
Baita rockzao, contemporaneo grunge curti
A delightful album, good alternative sound interspersed with mellow pacifying notes.
Great
Really great record
This band is so underrated
I don't know why these guys weren't more popular. 4/5.
I really liked it. Although I’m more the type who enjoys Pearl Jam and Soundgarden, knowing that this band influenced them and that they’re contemporaries puts me in the right frame of mind to listen to this. It’s not the best of the best, in my opinion, but I’m drawn to this kind of music. Overall, a pleasant and cheerful listen ;-)
Mark Lanegan was one of the great voices, but I must admit I knew him better through his solo work and work with other bands. It’s no less great here, soulful with real grit. Musically it works to his strengths, enough light and shade for the world weary lyrics to shine through, Beatles harmonies, guitars that squall but don’t scream. But the voice, the voice takes these well crafted alternative rock songs to a different place
Screaming Trees are one of my favorite groups from the early 90s Seattle movement. This album is a little choppy in the middle but ends on a very strong note. I'm ready to re-watch "Singles"!
Pretty standard 90’s alternative rock. Album falls somewhere between 3-stars and 4-stars, but gets rounded up after having to slog through two Dixie‘s MNR albums in the past week.
A really great album by a band I had never heard of before. I would definitely listen to more by them. This is why I love this exercise.
3.5
This is a good record, though I know it does kind of hit my sweet spot sonically and maybe isn't beloved by everyone. Not a classic but def a part of a 'scene' that I did really enjoy. It's got some grungey, meat puppets, collective soul-ish vibes.
I own their previous album Sweet Oblivion from the strength of the singles "Nearly Lost You" and "Dollar Bill." It's a fine album, but not amazing. This one is slightly better and more varied. Its a fantastic start with "Halo Of Ashes", then goes on to the obvious single "All I Know." The rest is pretty good Screaming Trees fare. Solid album. 3.8/5.
8/10 Good
What a nice surprise. I only know Mark Lanegan from his QOTSA work, but this was a well produced and reasonably diverse mix of songs. Sounds like a long-lost grunge classic that I somehow never heard.
gut, hat mir gut gefallen. rockig aber auch bissi popig ig.. 4/5
i luv grunge
I was expecting something raw grunge/noise but this album blew me away with its songsmanship. Oh damn, they are from Ellensburg.
Muy grata sorpresa. Me gustó mucho
Came to Mark Lanegan late, which is a shame, because I'd have loved this back in the day. Some really good, sometimes great 90s alt rock. Recommended reading, though heads up that it's bleak as fuck: Lanegan's memoir, Sing Backwards and Weep.
Good alt rock album. “All I know”, “dying days”, and “make my mind” were favorites but pretty listenable top to bottom. Dime Western in particular sounds influential on bands like Godsmack- it’s an interesting sound ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
This was good. 4
Tuesday, 12 May, 2026 Screaming Trees have perfected the classic Seattle grunge sound into a melodic dulcet tone. And as the swan song to the true grunge era, this album is in the par example category.
3.5
Going into this, I thought it was gonna be a lot like the early QOTSA stuff, so I was pretty shocked when it wasn't a very heavy album. It's definitely rock, but I wouldn't call it desert rock like the stuff that Josh Homme became known for. It ended up being a nice change of pace though, I really enjoyed it being a little more laid back. It set a nice tone for the rest of the day. Favorites: All I Know, Dying Days, Make My Mind
See guys? There are 90s rock bands from Seattle that aren't the grunge big four! Ignore the fact that I've already reviewed two Mudhoney albums and already knew that that was the case. So, Screaming Trees? They're a band, alright. They're another one of those bands that are in the realm of "they weren't super popular, but real grunge fanatics know who they are" right alongside bands like Green River, Mother Love Bone, and the aforementioned Mudhoney. They're another pioneering band in the scene, but as you might have noticed, this album here was a bit too late to be a pioneering release. Dare I say that grunge had already died by '96? But that doesn't really matter when the album is good. Fortunately, Dust is good. I like this album. It's not quite peak music or anything, but it's cool. It's definitely got some grungy songwriting and a bit of that atmosphere, though I did notice a fairly prominent psychedelic influence in the music here. I like it. Mark Lanegan's vocals kinda remind me of some of Kurt Cobain's softer performances. In fact, this album is definitely on the softer side of grunge, which I'm not against. Still, there are some strong guitar riffs to give attention to. "All I Know" especially is pretty great. The album's a little samey, but I like how the music sounds, so I'm not upset. This is just a cool album, okay? It sounds good and it has some pretty solid writing. These guys should've been more popular. Decent 4/5.
Good old grungy rock album right up my street. Prefer Sweet Oblivion but this is getting rounded up to 4.
Also das Cover gefällt mir ja gar nicht. Aber die Musik ist nicht so schlecht.
Definitely seen this album cover before but never heard it, enjoyed the hit of grunge
Alternative with classic rock elements, and none of it laid on too thick. The first happy surprise in the 1001
Stoner rock (QOTSA) adjacent. I approve of this album.
Hadn’t heard of them before. Liked it, felt very 90s
wieder mal überraschend gut, dachte es wär metal aber es ist viel mehr als das
Decent album but quite forgettable. Could have died without listening to it. Specific rating - 3.9 Fav song - witness Least fav - traveler
This was an awesome surprise! I’ve always heard of this band, but never really listen to them. When the album started, I thought this might even be a five star project and maybe on relisten it will get there for me.
Britpop influenced grunge with a sprinkling of psychadelica? I like brit pop. I like grunge. I dont minda sprinkling of psychadelica.
Favorite Song: Witness
Veldig kult!
4!!
Rock with lyrics
I was quite a big fan of 'Nearly Lost You', but this got next to no airplay in Australia when it came out, so I never heard it before and hadn't ever chased it up. Well, that was a bit of a mistake! I loved almost all of this, with music that I found more interesting than the 'grunge' label would suggest, excellent (of course) vocals from Mark Lanegan, and overall a very good vibe. I get what others are saying in the reviews about some of the songs sounding a bit the same as each other, but when it sounds this good, why change??
Screaming Trees are an underrated 90s band.
I'm familiar with ST... but haven't spent much (enough!) time with them. I really loved this band. Really sad to have missed these dudes in the context of their peers. This is a fantastic record.
Not really a Seattle band, but if you consider them a Seattle band they're right up there with any of them. 5-star A side; 3-star B side. Meet in the middle.
I was surprised by this, having only heard Nearly Lost You before (or so I thought). The first song sounds VERY like Soundgarden, so I was wary, but after that it has all sort of unique styles. Nice mix of grunge an 60s ish, psychedelic jangle pop. It turns out that several of these songs I had either heard before, or were so catchy that I was singing along to them on the second listen. Will definitely come back to this.
Likte dette!
Kult, fengende, meditativt på et vis.
I hadn’t heard this album before but really enjoyed it on first listen.
This was a real grower of an album, listened a few times and will now be expanding to their back catalogue. I had to check back, and it wasn't a surprise to see the was released mid 90s, it harks back tp that era even though it passed me by at the time
Another album I've gone to a few times and am happy to finally give the time it deserves. I had wanted to go through all of Lanegan's work when he passed, but there is a lot of it, after all, and it is prone to a dirge-y vibe. Hard to process en masse Getting back into this one feels like I never heard it. Halo of Ashes immediately hooks in with its driving beat and eastern tinged leads. Look at You is sad and stunning. There's a certain swirling feeling, not really a wall of sound but something very full and entrancing behind a lot of this that is hard to explain. Put another way, it's amazing hearing an album for the first time despite listening to it before. I think this could have been a 5 if side B was as strong as side A. But it"s definitely a 4 and I'm glad to properly discover it. I'm a sucker for All I Know, and have been for nigh 30 years, but on this listen it's Make My Mind that is stuck in my head
This was an unexpectedly solid album. The guitar parts were all exceptional and bold. The vocals were a bit lacking in a few songs, and sometimes the lyrics were mumbled. The album was also not nearly as grunge-sounding as I thought it would be. Overall though, it was a nice surprise.
This sounded surprisingly fresh and groovy. Liked it.
3.5
Halo of Ashes - 4/5 All I Know - 4/5 Look At You - 4.5/5 Dying Days - 4/5 Make My Mind - 4/5 Sworn and Broken - 4/5 Witness - 4/5 Traveler - 4.5/5 Dime Western - 4.5/5 Gospel Plow - 4/5
Mark Lanegan Forever
There's a few good Grunge bands out there and this is clearly one of them. Happy to have the chance to listen to this!
Wow! I didn't knew about this band and I'll certainly listen to everything they did. One of the most creative and innovative grunge album I've ever heard. The songs are great, well-written and full of unexpected twists and instruments.
7.5/10
Nice rock album worth hearing. But nothing so special that it is one of 1001 albums you need to hear before you die.
Screaming Trees - one of, if not THE best band name ever - take their place in the Pantheon of Grunge. Soundgarden inhabit a place of dark mysticism. Nirvana rain down a generational nihilistic celebration of fin de siecle self-loathing. Pearl Jam, cloaked in drama, seek what is True and Right in Rock and Roll as their ancient ancestors (Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, Cream) had decreed. And Alice in Chains, ripping the mask off of our self-righteous indignity and feeding it back to us, burdensome, heavy, and bewildering. Screaming Trees appear to have little use for these aspirations. What is important is the sound. We build structures from the bottom up, literally, layering melodies over washes of simple chord structures that are comforting, furtive, ebullient. Groove above all else. Mark Lanegan is considered a god among rock singers, and rightly so. Barret Martin is he best drummer you've never heard of, who went on to become an academic ethnomusicoligist and played with Peter Buck in Tuatara. Van and Gary Lee Conner live on in this music and their own solo stuff, all brilliant. Unique. Tasteful. However, this is not the band's best work. But anything by The Screaming Trees is important, and necessary in this list or the rock music generally. They fill a hole with beauty and musical expression, where so much else can be so depressing, so serious, so ugly.
Mjög góð plata og hljómsveit. Fíla Mark Lanegan.
Wow I had only ever listened to one song from this band and they are sicklkkk. Love them and cant wait to hear more
Fed!
I've always loved Mark Lanegans voice, but I've never heard a Screaming Trees album form start to finish....
A good high energy grunge album that exceeded my expectations a lot 7.5/10
Really good album. Enjoyed start to finish. Great feel to it.
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WE'RE COVERED IN DUST!!!! This album is actually pretty good!
Very good album. I like everything I hear by these guys and I'm wondering why it took me so long to discover this. I liken them to a softer gentler version of Soundgarden, maybe. Or, that is to stay, maybe when I'm not quite in the mood for Soundgarden because it might be a little 'much' that day, maybe I'll try Screaming Trees instead.
Go, white boy, go!! Finally, rock I can stand listening to and *enjoy*. This is probably the second album in my run of 50+ albums (so far) that I'm happy to have discovered through this exercise. Favorite track: Sworn & Broken.
Kind of shocked how much I enjoyed this. Interesting guitarwork sets it apart from other 90s alt rock bands.
This is pretty great, no firm highlights yet but I enjoyed throughout 4/5
Why has no one told me I can now watch the music videos on Spotify?! That’s so cool. On my way snowshoe pretty good album not what I was expecting but in a good way. 87
Never heard of screaming tree. Grudgy. I like.
I liked this. A bit of queens of the stone age, the cult and the tea party.
Maybe not groundbreaking, just a distillation of the grunge style that was made popular a few years prior by the big 4 Seattle bands. But enjoyable to my ears.
Halo of Ashes - 4/5 All I Know - 5/5 Look at You - 3/5 Dying Days - 5/5 Make My Mind - 5/5 Sworn and Broken - 4/5 Witness - 3/5 Traveler - 4/5 Dime Western - 4/5 Gospel Plow - 4/5 Average score: 4.1/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ interesting. their sound is very reminiscent of Soundgarden. if i had to choose, i'd probably rather listen to Soundgarden over these guys. still, this was a pretty nice listen overall apparently a member of this group went on to join Queens of the Stone Age (the bassist I believe), so that's kinda cool
Another review describes this as "The Eagles of Grunge" and I can't disagree. I enjoyed the album but it's not groundbreaking or genre-defining. Solid 3.5-4/5
the lost grunge album, except melodic enough that you can actually understand the singer
Great riffs, fun vocals. This sort of relaxed, psychedelic atmosphere works really well with these guitars. The songs towards the end are kind of whatever, but the beginning is really fun, so it cancels out, I guess. I like grunge. More often than not, the riffs are very satisfying, and this album is no exception.
Its maybe not quite as good as Sweet Oblivion but its close
quite good for someone ive never heard of before
The album is a grower. Good voice and interesting mix of influences
Solidly enjoyable grunge-adjacent rock with some blues influence.
Can't recall ever hearing this before, but many of the songs sounds to familiar for some reason. 'Halo of Ashes' for example sounds like it could've been a Foo Fighters song. In a good way! I quite enjoyed this ride honestly. It felt quite like a 90s or early 2000s rock album, which for me is a bit familiar and safe. Perhaps a bit generic, but I liked it still. 'All I Know' and 'Halo of Ashes' were probably best tracks, but there wasn't really any bad song in my opinion. Wouldn't mind listening to this more in the future, so a weak 4 for me!
Excellent album. Only lost a star because a couple of tracks sounded like U2
Chill rock beats to study to!
Feels a bit 80's to start, but by the end I was digging it. Good alt rock.
Not bad! I've never heard of Screaming Trees before, but the music is great. I'd happily listen to this grungy, slightly psychedelic rock any day. It's not a bona fide masterpiece, and whether it's strictly necessary pre-death listening is unclear to me, as it does seem a bit forgettable in some ways... but I definitely enjoyed it, and it's definitely good.
Awful, awful album art. Opening track surprised me with it's groovy bass, energetic drums and eastern instrumentation. The vocals, however, sounded exactly as expected - that sort of gruff, grunge-lite 90s male vocal. Second track likewise was bouncy and unexpectedly upbeat, dragged down only by the interesting vocals. And this is how the album continued; a pleasant suprise and to be honest, even the vocal style grew on me. Amazing album? Not really, but still actually quite a good one.
Rating: 7.5/10
First time listen. Really liked.
Album 37 Top 3 favorites off the album: Gospel Plow, Halo of Ashes, Dime Western Initial response: yeah good driving music Like 2 minutes in: SITAR?!? Banger. This cooked. Loved it. Particularly enjoyed the end of Gospel Plow. Unfortunately, I listened to this at work and so have nothing profound to say. Just know I liked it.
Never got into Screaming Trees but I really dig this album. The eastern influences in late stage grunge was cool to listen to and I will be exploring more of their stuff. Not sure why it’s in the list but I’m glad I listened to it and I will definitely revisit it.
Ahh, as a Grunge boy I did like Screaming Trees. That said, I never had any of their albums and only knew a few of their songs, so this should be nice. Man, I needed this after two bland jazz non-entities. It's certainly on the lighter, nicer, commercial side of Grunge but to hear some actual songs after two days of trumpet and piano fiddling, it's like a revelation. In 1996 Grunge was all but dead and this album feels more like a generic alt-rock album. Lanegan's voice was always a standout - a non-traditional rock and Grunge tone - and the songs are just what I'd expect to hear while Claudia has a freakout in Party Of Five. It's probably a three star album, but it gets the extra star for nostalgia, for Lanegan RIPing in peace, and for saving me from a third day of people deep-throating a horn and calling it revolutionary.
Needed that album. It was a fun listen. I do wish the rating system was out of 10 and not out of five. but what are ya gonna do. Just a nice rock album that I haven't listened to before. None of the songs stood out. Just the general vibe.
Really enjoyed this! Was a bit worried based on the mixed reviews. 8/10 Most Excellent
I liked this a lot. Reminded me of a mix of Nirvana and Alice In Chains
Super underrated. A pretty stellar example of grunge, with some extra flavors thrown in there that make it more unique. The vocals are solid, but not as hard hitting as some of their contemporaries, which is literally the only negative thing I can think to say. That, and “Sworn and Broken” is a stinker. Otherwise, I kinda fucking loved this album. Sick cover art too. Edit: I think the vocals matter more than I first thought. The emotion just never quite climbs as high as you'd want it to, and every time I revisit I find myself drifting to something else instead. I guess it's a four for me.
We all return to Dust and grunge when our time is up.
Not as good as Sweet Oblivion but it still holds up well today in a kinda bluesy grungey way.
Album #37 Screaming Trees: Dust Grunge is a genre that I have barely delved into. In fact, it’s not even my favourite culturally defining, regionally locked, 90s alternative rock genre that would go on to inspire a commercially successful yet critically panned “post” variant; that would be Britpop. Although I have listened to almost every Britpop album, despite not being alive in the 90s and not being British, that same enthusiasm never extended to me for grunge, despite them being sister movements in a way. Both genres have a “Big 4”, for Britpop that was of course Pulp, Oasis, Suede, and Blur, and for grunge that was Nirvana, Soundgarden, Alice In Chains, and Pearl Jam. Of the Grunge four, I have only listened to Nirvana, due to their cultural significance, and Soundgarden, because Black Hole Sun is such a banger. But for both genres, beyond the big four, there was a series of bands coming up around the same time, who, due to how powerful the movements were, were either trying to attach themselves to the genre or being attached to the genre by the media. It seems to me that Screaming Trees, despite being grunge in name, are moreso grunge by association. There are definitely elements in the production as that was the way rock albums were produced in the 90s, but when I listen to “Dust”, I pick up on influences from a wide variety of genres, far exceeding most grunge bands. I had no idea who Screaming Trees were before listening, and from my research, I determined that they were just some irrelevant grunge band that the curator of the list must have been salty weren’t bigger than they were, so he threw them in the list. I didn’t have high expectations, like I said, I’m not the biggest grunge fan, but frankly, the album rocks. Practically every song on this thing goes hard, yet also doesn’t give me a migraine like some grunge/metal music. I almost hear post-punk elements in some of the songs, which is always a good thing. I had to listen to this one twice, because I knew I liked it the first time, but I wanted to see just how much I liked it, and the answer was a lot. So far, this is definitely my favourite album on this list from a band I have never listened to before, and it is from a band I never would have expected. Kind of sounds like if the members of Led Zeppelin formed a Nickelback cover band, which is pretty sick. Best Songs: All I Know, Look At You, Sworn and Broken Worst Song: Dime Western Score out of 10:8.5
Dust is an album that leans heavily on its amazing riffs and catchy choruses, to moderate success. It's an incredibly accessible Grunge sound that, while not doing anything revolutionary, harnesses the best aspects of the genre and puts them into a groovy package. The album definitely feels like a band's last album, encompassing all they've learned into a mature and tight final project. I want to emphasize that in comparison to other Grunge-y bands from the time, Dust feels like a very mature album without being boring. With artists that start out young and wild and eventually grow up, it's very typical for them to lose the spark and edge they originally had. Screaming Trees' sound definitely matured from their early days, but Dust has just as much energy and intrigue as Buzz Factory. Mark Lanegan's vocals work really well for this sound, sometimes venturing into Bill Callahan levels of apathy on the latter half of the album, but keeping a reserved presentation that knows the perfect time to pick up. Overall the album sounds like what other Grunge albums I didn't like wanted to sound like. The album never really loses steam except perhaps on Traveler, and doesn't overstay its welcome. I genuinely had a lot of fun with this record which is not something I can say about a lot of Grunge projects.
Alright, I enjoyed this album but I do question its inclusion. It's 90s psych rock grunge from a band I'm completely unfamiliar with. Every so often I let myself say "this slot could have gone to the Cranberries." And Dust is "this slot could have gone to the Cranberries"-ing pretty hard. Notability aside, if you like grunge (as our group tends to) then you could do a lot worse than this. Highlights: "All I Know" and "Traveler."
I kinda liked this! Classic Nirvana-esque ‘90s grunge. Stand-outs - Halo of Ashes - Sworn and Broken - Witness - Traveler
Honestly enjoyed this way more than I expected to. Gets a little stale towards the end, but I really enjoyed most of the songs here
really nice
mid-90s rock realness, this makes me want to drive down a long ass road in the desert with the windows down
Really quite a good album! I'd heard Screaming Trees a couple of times, obvs "Nearly Lost you", but they never quite grabbed me. When this came up, I thought "Meh. I'll give it a go" and it was a little better than I expected. But, if I wrote a review then, I'd have given it a 3 and not really thought much about it. Since I really do like harder rock and very much liked grunge, I gave it another shot. Glad I did! Mark Lanegan is praised by many and I thought his voice is ok, with a little gravel to it, which is cool. He just never really seemed to bring much emotion to it, though. Giving this a listen or two really opens it up. I can see this entering a pretty heavy rotation now. I've two or three on playlists already: "Dying Days" "Traveler" and Gospel Plow" for sure. I sure wish we had a scale of 1-10 instead of 1-5 stars. It would make this list better for everyone I want to give this a 4.7 because there's really not a bad minute on it. But I can't give it a 5 because there's nothing here that is astounding. No hit, no single, nothing that calls me back as a must-listen. Sadly, I'm going with a 4 because while I think it deserves to be on the list, I know it's not everyone's cup of tea AND it will require a little more effort than I think a lot of people are going to be willing to give. 5's go to albums that really evoke something or changed/influenced music in some way Sorry Trees, I like you, but I can't do it.
Outstanding. Relatable, rocking, great guitar-driven alt rock with good writing. Might be their most listen-able album.
“Yes it’s too late This life isn’t mine Lord hear me pray Can you ease my mind” Another in a recent string of albums that I didn’t know what to expect from. Dust by Screaming Trees was a great listen from a band that apparently pioneered Grunge music alongside the likes of Pearl Jam and Soundgarden but who I knew nothing about. The similarities between Screaming Trees and their contemporaries are immediately obvious and in my view they do it all just as well as the aforementioned big names of the genre. The one key difference being that there is a distinct lack of obvious radio hits that might have seen Screaming Trees get some air time. There is no “Even Flow” or “Spoonman”. However, “Dust” doesn’t suffer for this. It’s a cohesive, well written, and well performed selection of Grunge tracks that deserve to be more widely heard. I look forward to it popping up in my rotation in the future.
This is the bands 7th and final studio album. And they certainly finished on a high note. Sadly this very enjoyable album, and the two years of touring, weren’t enough.
90s hard rock, grunge. Really cool grunge rock album.
I like
I liked this. I like it better than Sweet Oblivion actually. Good album!

In an alternative universe, it is Screaming Trees that take some of the raw ingredients of grunge and become a monumental arena rock band around them. This is a very strong rock record with several great tracks - "All I Know", "Dying Days", and "Witness" to name a few. There are traces of grunge underlying the style, but this is not really a grunge album - it's a little too languorous and measured. But what it is is a great rock record, and what that was unfairly buried at the time.
Well produced and written. Songs are a lot more diverse than I was expecting. Lanegan’s voice really stands out.
Solid stuff.

This feels a lot more unique than most grunge, as much as I obviously love Nirvana and Soundgarden and the rest of them, this brings something new to the scene that makes them stand out. It's almost punkier, but somehow smoother and more polished at the same time. To be honest, I would argue that there is a strong case for this not even being grunge at all. It's more just like alternative rock, just with how different it feels to grunge and a lot of the other rock around at the time.
Never heard before. Really good. Liked very much.
in high school I had some friends who were into grunge. most of the bands sucked. the Screaming Trees stood out as one of the best of them. I don't think they stand out much in the alt rock landscape to me now. still gonna go up to 4.
Favorite track(s): Halo of Ashes, All I Know, Witness
Great album, very nostalgic
Dig the 90s alt rock sound, lead singer was just too boring
Porcupine Tree if you cut out prog and add grunge. Also today I learned that Screaming Trees spun off into Queens of the Stone Age. Muy interesante. Anyway, this is a great, fun album, I liked it very much. Oke bai bai
I'd only been familiar with the EP they did with Beat Happening, and was kinda disappointed that they didn't really sound like that most of the time. To make matters worse, I was tired and driving to Thanksgiving and looking forward to some grunge to blast me awake, except Screaming Trees are just so mellow! Lanegan sounds a bit like Bono, even! But as I slowly woke up naturally, I started to get into it more. The songs didn't really have any standouts, but I did think it was pretty cool how psychedelic it sounds! That's not something I've ever seen in grunge before, and I like it.
Why didn’t I listen to this when it came out? Good stuff.
Psychadellic grunge. I likes it.
I feel like this album, too, is generally nice but forgettable, but somethin about it really gets me. I think I really like the lead singer’s voice. Plus this is a genre I’ve always really liked.
Another good album that I'll definitely listen to at night when I want to chill and get ready to fall asleep. It's on the middle ground where it can also be listened to while studying.
Great example of the era
As soon as I saw another 90's album I gave a sigh and thought "Mr Imagination strikes again" First track started was a bit unsure but after that every track was better than the last. Some brilliant guitars and drumming. Vocal was the weak point
Eh, it was decent. Not keen on the vocal, was hoping for something a bit heavier. Dying Days really stood out though, I enjoyed that one. Then read that it featured Pearl Jam's guitarist. So, that figures. Some other good songs though not leaving me craving to hear more. It is very much suitable driving music and I happened to be driving when listening.
Very pleasantly surprised by this album. A band I had never previously not heard of. Was put off initially by the grunge label given to them but on listening it was only mildly grungy. There were a lot more agreeable sounds throughout. Particularly liked the guitar play which appeared at points across the soundstage you were not expecting. Equally satisfying was I allowed the Spotify algorithm to do its work after the album ended. It produced a great series of songs it thought connected with Sugar. Bands like Screaming Trees, Mad Season and The Gutter Twins all featured. Again previously unknown to me but now copied into a playlist. 4/5 2/11/25
Yes me likey ! Very good
I thought this was really good. Interesting mix of typical grunge sounds with psychedelic elements. Solid melodies too. Favorite songs were All I Know, Dying Days, Witness, and Dime Western.
Enjoyed this, I’d listen again
Have enjoyed them since hearing them for the first time on the “Singles” soundtrack. Mark Lanegan has such a distinct voice. This is a great album that I listen to a lot.
pretty nice
I liked this and need to listen to it some more. 4/5
In a weird way this felt like it didn’t do anything crazy or unique but they did their style well which made it a great, mostly consistent listen. Honestly I feel like the feel of the album made it great with the blanket of fuzzy guitars in a a lot of the songs which is what I liked about Ash’s 1977 so much, this is quite a bit different though as it has a more grungy feel with some folky and bluesy influence which definitely gives it a unique blend of songs throughout but unfortunately doesn’t hook me as much when it diverges into a folk acoustic guitar song like traveller compared to the more heavy ones. It’s a good album though, favourites: All I know, Dying days, Make my mind, Witness and sworn and broken. Overall, 7.5/10 (just because I was in between a 7 and an 8).
Good album that was new to me. I especially liked "Look At You" but the entire album is solid.
Underrated greatness.
Super cool album, love the style
Another band i know of but never listened to. What a great album.
Huh, the song Dying Days has a fair amount of keyboard on it. Turns out it's Benmont Tench playing keyboards on this album. A honest to god Heartbreaker playing on a grunge band album? Holy crap. Call me impressed. Really enjoying this album a lot. Worth another listen for sure. Also, Josh Homme toured with ST when they were promoting this album. Kinda makes sense, him going from Kyuss to this and then moving on to Queens of the Stone Age. I can hear some ST influences now.
Really great, and I can't believe I never got into them--such a nice mix of rock and psychedelic. Might rise, but a solid 4 for now.
Ikke for mæ, men ikke så verst likevel, altså. Men heller ikke sånt som satte sæ i øran, så æ har allerede bare en vag idé om kordan det hørtes ut etter at æ hørte det i går.
All That's Gone Away 1001 Albums Generator 125 (09/24/2025) Screaming Trees are something of the forgotten brother of the Seattle grunge scene. They never reached the commercial or critical success of the genre's big four (Nirvana, Alice in Chains, Soundgarden, and Pearl Jam), but listening to their last studio album from before their breakup, Dust, it isn't obvious why. After a week of albums ranging from crummy to really shitty, I was fearful seeing an album and artist that I had never heard of. But luckily, Dust is really fucking good. It is grunge, but it's a very unique brand of it, incorporating really psychedelic elements into its sound. These elements are most prevalent in the opener, Halo of Ashes, as well as Traveler, which is the "chill" song of the album. This album starts really strong with the aforementioned Halo of Ashes, which features what sounds like a sitar or some other Indian sounding instrument. Dying Days has amazing guitar courtesy of Pearl Jam's Mike McCready. Sworn and Broken had my jaw on the floor with its synth solo that really stands out from the rest of the album in a very good way. While there is subtle synth throughout a lot of this album, Sworn and Broken is where that element really gets to shine. The only moment of weakness is the slow song, Traveler. A really pleasant surprise after a week of real stinkers. Really strong 4/5. Favs: Halo Of Ashes Dying Days Sworn And Broken Least Fav: Traveler
Never listened to screaming trees or mark lanegan really though am aware of him. First half of this felt very 90s in the vain of pearl jam, was really solid though, feel like the ST should get more airtime as it was just as good as the other bands of the time. The stoner rock/QOTSA sound was much more evident in the second half, both music and singing style. Again stood up in terms of quality and feels pretty influential for that sort of sound. Think I'd be a bigger fan if I'd heard this years ago but still thought it was great and should listen to more.
Heard of them but never once listened!! Halo of Ashes: I liked the sort of exotic indian music side of things. very interesting All I know: wow this song is lowkey fire af idk if i like the singer so much but i dont dislike it so who cares its a little Jesus Jones x Kurt Cobain
Really like this one. Good dynamics, sounds great. Though definitely influenced by the time, it doesn't feel stuck in the era some 30 years later. Couldn't turn this one off.
Very strong
it was cool and funky
I did not know what to expect, but was pleasantly surprised by this album. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I get that it is grunge adjacent and does not epitomize true grunge, but I found it eminently listenable. 3.5 stars rounded up to four.
Unlike the Big four bands of the Grunge scene, Screaming trees clearly draws from the 80s alternative scene like REM and U2 making a more melody-centric Grunge sound. Best Songs: Halo of Ashes, Dying Days, Witness Worst Songs: Traveller Worst Songs: All I Know
Definitely sounded like 90's grunge, I was really into the music, the vocals lacked the energy I'm really into, but a surprisingly nice listen, never listened to screaming trees before.
Good hard rock album, lacks a defining single. I think I prefer sweet oblivion but very little in it.
Good album, forgotten how good, especially first 2/3
Close to a 4 but it lost me a bit in the middle. I enjoyed the hand drums quite a bit in a few of the songs, eh fuck it 4
Digne héritier du glam rock, avec un feeling résolument 1990 (guitares et voix)
Shocked by how much I liked this. Avoids so many of the pitfalls of other new-to-me grunge albums on this list.
Haven't heard of these guys before and they were great!
Definitely some pretty solid 90s rock from a band I've never heard of. One of the rare times where this list produces a good album that I'm glad I listened to before I die. Don't know how much I'll come back to it, but it was enjoyable. Liked the songs All I Know and Sworn & Broken the most. Low 4.
Vocals and drums were quite alright on this one. There were a couple butt rock sounding songs, but I have never heard of this band. Reminded me a bit of Audioslave.
That album just hit in all the right ways. Perfect 90s alternative rock that reminded me a lot of Soundgarden/Audioslave. Don't really know how to describe it any further than just being a great rock album from a band that I am not sure I have heard of
I feel like I'm pretty hit or miss with some 90's rock, but this had some good psychedelic moments in it that bump it from a 3 to a 4. Like the lead singers voice as well. The last song reminds me of another song especially the last minute or so. Gonna haunt me the rest of the day now. If anyone knows it please let me know.
This was awesome. Really enjoyed it. But not quite 5
This was great! Nice crunchy guitar tone! Reminds me of Dinosaur Jr. :-)
Reminiscent of The Bends but more grungey, quite a fan on the first listen.
Solid.
I knew the name of the band. I recognized the cover, yet I had never listened to this. My loss, really. This is good rock/grunge/hard. It has personality, it has flair, it has the hooks and the drums. Overall great!
Screaming Trees: Dust: A pretty cool album! Really good vibes, some very unique song structures, both sounding kinda like prog rock and more traditional music. I really liked it, though I think it could have had some more FLAIR. 8.75/10
That 90s sound
4/5
Thought I didn’t like grunge. Glad this album proved me wrong.
I like this one, catchy grunge rock. It didn’t have any super standout tracks for me, but I liked it quite a bit overall.
grunge / alternative / folk rock
this album rules. rip mark lanegan.
I had very low expectations going in, but am really enjoying the first track. The rest of them album held up as well.
I gotta say, I'm always in the mood for a good hard rock album with some weirder elements and Dust certainly helped to scratch that itch. The main thing that stands out about this album is all the extra stuff they put into these songs from the electronic stuff to the world elements all really give these songs their own identity. The songs that these elements are used in are absolutely great mainly due to their great melodies with each instrument giving all of these songs a really nice sound to them and still fitting in with the grunge/hard rock style. Some of the songs here are a bit forgettable but other than that, this is a really great album that i can easily recommend to a lot of people. Best Song: Traveler Worst Song: Halo of Ashes
My kinda jam. A whole world of style within the 90s generation-2-grunge realm. 4 stars, will listen again.
I actually loved this album. Never really listen to screaming trees but will definitely check out more of their music. Excellent listen!
This was great!
This isn't really anything amazing but it's pretty solid, like, grungy rock to put on and do stuff to which is a thing I like a lot. I enjoy the sound and I have lots of stuff to do, so, match made maybe not in heaven but at least a kind of broadly positive location.
I thought I was going to dislike this, especially given the dreadful album cover. But although I wasn't that sold on the first track, I liked it more and more as I listened. Although this is nominally grunge, it's doing something quite different from most grunge bands. I thought Lanegan's voice suited the material well.
One of the better albums I've never heard of. Does a great job of threading the needle where the songs themselves are not super heavy, but don't feel out of place next to other contemporary grunge albums. Felt like the album could've used a song or two that turns the heavy up more, but one of the most disciplined performances in this project. Top tracks: Halo of Ashes, Look At You, Sworn and Broken
Look At You is masterpiece
Classic grunge
I liked this album. Lush lots of musical depth.
Distorted guitars…heaven. I want to see these guys in concert. It would be amazing.
Never heard of them but would probably listen to this album again
lot of unfavourable reviews on here but i enjoyed this one
Had never heard of this band - pretty solid! Early Josh Homme band too! Enjoyed this album - and added a few songs to playlists I will listen to later. Solid 3.5 - I will round up.
I had never heard of this artist or album before, but I loved it!! Some nice instrumental stuff going on. A bit grunge, a bit Led Zeppelin. Pretty interesting, they bring in elements I don't expect. Most (all?) grunge I've heard doesn't include harmonies so that's a +1 for this album.
Un poco radiohead?
It’s fun to hear the early ideas that became QOTSA
This was really good.
Dust - Screaming Trees This album is exactly what I think of when I think of dad rock. It’s perfect for hanging out in the garage passing your dad various tools as he works on the car or sitting on the back deck watching as he grills steaks on the barbecue. It’s something I could listen to at almost occasion, as it’s heavy enough to fit into my regular rock music rotation, but not too heavy that I couldn’t listen to it with company. It’s a very pleasant album, and I mean this in the best of ways. Favourite track(s): Halo of Ashes, Make My Mind Not really the sound I think of when I think of trees screaming but it was pretty cool regardless
first listen i liked it
Didn’t mind this. Sounds more 70s to me. No song stuck out
sounds v influential
I really like this album, it reminded me of mashup between Alice in chains, audio space and a twist of country. An Easy listening album, nothing too polar about it.
It wasn't bad. There were no songs that were like "wow" or was a banger, but it wasn't a bad album and I enjoyed it as background music.
Screaming Trees has always been a mystery to me. Not anymore. Really enjoyed this album. Their earlier 90's grunge was sort of lost on the big 3 out of Seattle. They did have a nice tune on the Singles soundtrack, but this album sounds way more mature than their older stuff. Good call on this one! 3.55/5 = 4 stars.
They’re a grunge band that has never fully clicked with me, I think they last the hit factor and the psychedelic influence is the opposite of what I’m after usually. This is probably their best album though. It’s between a 3 and a 4 and I’ve gone light 4.
Really outstanding grunge that I've never heard before! Might be some growers for me in the tracklist but all I know is it's rock solid.
Such a great time capsule of 90s alternative. Every time I hear them I forget how good of musicians and what a unique singer Mark Lanegan was.
Unlike some of the other albums, this one feels greater than the sum of its parts. Only a few songs stood out, but almost every song was good to very good. I'm surprised they aren't talked about more, I'm looking forward to digging into this band a bit.
Interesting blend of "grunge" with almost Beatle-esque undertones... or a touch of sixties Psychedelia... Sitar type sounds juxtaposed with pounding punk drums and grungy guitars... you can tell the singer is about my age, because he's doing his best "jim morrison"... I was NOT a big fan of the grunge era... Nirvana were good... never dug Pearl Jam... and Soundgarden were so minor... and only a bit better in my opinion... nowadays those bands are treated with reverence... but this record, actually is a MUCH better representation of the genre... in my opinion, whatever "genre" you do, do it in a way where i can tap my foot, and maybe want to hum along... after making me want to listen to it more than once... "Look at You" is a standout track... an actual grunge ballad... and not the only one on the record... I think they enjoyed making grunge real rock n roll... Mark Lanegan, and Screaming Trees did it as well, or better than anyone... a solid four stars.

Back in 2003, a mate told me Mark Lanegan was the ultimate prog/math-rock artist and urged me to check out a local gig. Needless to say, I was pretty disappointed when it turned out to be nothing like that. I never quite got over that letdown, so this is actually my first time really listening to anything Lanegan-related. But wow, what a great record! Favourite tracks: Halo of Ashes, All I Know, Sworn and Broken (especially the emotional organ solo).
Hell yeah.
"Dust" is the seventh studio album and the last one released during the group's lifetime by American rock band Screaming Trees. Hard rock, pyschedelic rock and grunge are the Wiki-listed genres. I don't know if grunge fits them at this point but they're from Washington so that's fair game. On this album, they are equally influenced by folk and blues as they are by pyschedelic and punk rock. The bandmembers included Mark Lanegan (lead vocals, guitar), Gary Lee Connor (guitar, backing vocals, sitar), Van Connor (bass, backing vocals) and Barrett Martin (percussion, cello, drums, conga, harmonium, tabla and djembe). The album was very well-received critically with many citing it as their best. Commercially, it reached #134 in the US and #32 in the UK. Sitar and guitar slashes and rumbling drums begin "Halo of Ashes." An urgent and rockin' song. The sitar gives this a raga vibe. There's strings at the end. Are drugs Lanegan's angel of death? Their first single "All I Know" has a wah-wah wavering guitar and charging drums. Very melodic guitar and vocals. A missed opportunity of love. Off to a great start with these two songs. And there really isn't a let up of good songs on this album. In "Dying Days," Lanegan sings about all the deaths in the Seattle community at the time. Being a serious heroin addict too at the time, he's lucky he wasn't one of them. Pearl Jam's Mike McCready gives a great guitar solo and Tom Petty's Benmont Trench is on the organ. The band proves its versality in the second single "Sworn and Broken." Acoustic guitar. Drummer Barrett Martin on the cello and harmonium. It's softer with backing vocals. I don't think Lanegan is succeeding in his attempt to get clean. This is a compelling and very strong album. Mark Lanegan's baritone vocals are weathered yet strong. The sound is great so great production. Melodic and explosive guitars. Hard rock, pyschedelia and raga and everything works. There's a spirituality in the lyrics of mostly struggling to get through. I've only heard one other Screaming Trees' album "Sweet Oblivion" but this is better. It's a worthwhile album to give a listen to.
Enjoyable listen. Been a minute since I listened to this release.
Great! I love a solid mid 90’s sound. Highlights were: Look at you All I know Halo of ashes
Not a big grunge fan so surprised how much I liked this. The last few tracks didn't do anything for me but very solid overall. Rating: 4.1
Really cool little sound it’s got going on, just all round pretty nice. 4 stars
4/5
Enjoyed this album.
Dragged my feet on this one for a long time and boy do I ever regret it. A surprisingly quality album- some of the best grunge has to offer. The tracks are so hooky and the instrumentation rules. Especially on Sworn and Broken. Wow! What a track! Really enjoyed this.
Good
