Soulful voice with jazz and blues music. Enjoyed this album a lot more than I thought I would
lovely
Wel oké. Blijft echter weinig in het hoofd hangen
quirky album, would like to listen more.
Small Hours is a phenomenal song and brings the album up a whole star on its whole, but the rest didn’t do anything much for me. Definitely a great album musicality-wise, and Martyn’s guitar effects make this a very sonically-unique album for the time, but many of the songs come out a bit too same-y for me. Small Hours will absolutely be in regular rotation from now on, though!
This was a pretty groovy album and John has a pretty interesting voice, dare I say what that weirdo Tom Waits wishes he could be. 6/10.
legalzinho mas nao muito empolgante
Enjoyed more than expected but was ready for it to end. First song really bangs and the voice is distinctive.
One day, I won't be bored by a John Martyn song. Today is not that day.
This one was just okay for me. I can appreciate most of it - he's a talented composer and musician, but I couldn't really get into most of it. Big Muff was the standout track. Worthy of the list, but not for me.
cool album, thought it might have lost its touch over the years but still very cool material
New one for me.. Nothing great but a enjoyable listen.
Smiling Stranger has a groovy creep to it I liked, the strings and sax had a definite 70’s vibe and it worked. I especially liked Dancing, but Martyn creates some interesting atmosphere in most of the tracks. As well, I liked quite a lot of the record although some of it is forgettable. But I’m surprised I was completely ignorant of this artist. Enjoyable.
Didn't mind it. Was really enjoying it till the last track which wandered aimlessly for 8 minutes. Between a 3 and a 4.
First few songs were very strong. I could see them on a playlist of other easy listening songs and fitting in quite nicely. Then it got a little weird in the middle and end. Not terrible, but I thought it started out stronger than it finished.
It was fine - I much prefer Solid Air. The porny guitar effects were a bit distracting
I'd like to go on record being a giant fan of Big Muff. Well, maybe not 'giant' but it was one of the better songs. Based on the first track I thought this was relatively new, not from 1977. After it plays it shows its age and the rest of the album kinda drifts off into the sounds of trippy yesterworld. Ray LaMontagne must love this guy, as he's tried hard to emulate John Martyn's voice. Didn't love this the first listen, but a couple of tracks have grown on me, those being Dealer and Big Muff.
This one is hard to nail down, is it blues? jazz? pop? Sometimes his voice really worked for me (Couldn't Love You More) and sometimes it really didn't. Overall, I am more intrigued than turned off.
A medium bodied selection. I detected notes of Michael McDonald, Nick Drake and a hint of Eric Clapton with a mellow finish. Pairs nicely with running errands on a grey day.
Well, my second listen wasn't as enthralling as the first when it comes to John Martyn. I was, more than once, annoyed at the vocal delivery (and placement in the mix). Has something radical changed with him or did I just miss this the first time around? His voice was graveled and not very dynamic and the music was like a jam band without the jam. It wandered and never delivered. So, there were moments of enjoyment, but overall, not an album I'm planning on coming back to.
Small Hours was fantastic. The rest was a'ight.
John Martyn's previous folk album Solid Air grew on me over time, and I was pleasantly surprised by this one as well. His voice is calming, and I can see how the ambient instrumentals may have influenced 90s downtempo. It's pretty captivating (especially on the echoey guitar), embracing a bit of funk and jazz (including samba). Embodies the spirit of his good friend Nick Drake in songs like "Couldn't Love You More." Doesn't impress me much, and there aren't any songs I'd specifically return to, but I had a good time with this one.
give it Woy until the end of the season.
Funky and weird, probably very unique at the time; it still feels unique now. It’s hard to listen to these songs and not be distracted by John Martyn’s vocals. He oscillates between a deathbed Huey Lewis and Michael McDonald on LSD. On the list to listen again - “Dealer”.
A nice mood and of some interest but lacks grit and heft for sustained interest.
Liked it, not too spectacular
Best Song: Small Hours. A beautiful and gentle song that uses sparsity and quiet to great effect. Worst Song: Big Muff. Awful title, longer runtime without doing much with it. Overall: A nice, quiet little album. The vocals are pleasantly raspy, a bit like Ray Lamontagne. Nothing particularly exciting, but also probably no designed to excite.
Some nice jazzy, laid back vibes. Martyn's voice is a little rougher than I cared for, but overall this was an intriguing listen. Fave Songs: Small Hours, Dancing, Certain Surprise, Dealer, Couldn't Love You More
Generally liked this, though I have to say a lot of it felt slack and sloppy. Though it runs counter to some ideas of the artist I think many of these people would have ended up stronger musicians if they'd managed to battle their demons more successfully.
Dreamy and definitely carries dub influences. The last track didn’t need to be 8 minutes long.
Not bad to work to. Fairly relaxing and upbeat. Not something I would necessarily pick again.
Ensimmäinen biisi on oikein hyvä, loput jäivät taka-alalle mutta mietityttämään. Sopiva mitta!
I think I liked it but I can't remember much of it to be honest. I'll have to get back to it but yeah, good but unmemorable.
Felt sleepy...Album to listen too while drinking a coffee
Cool and smooth album, very pleasing and enjoyable. There's nothing that really stand out here, except maybe the songs Dancing and Certain Surprise. Nothing innovative or amazing, but certainly nice.
Second John Martyn album in consecutive days. I think this is more accessible than Solid Air and has a more pop feel about it than the blues/jazz/folk of Solid Air. Not bad. John's gruff rock voice is growing on me, but I still prefer his more natural pretty vocals.
Short album, has some variety, nothing really stands out but I enjoyed the slow, chilled tracks, especially the last one.
The second album of his that I've gotten and I listened to it twice to give it a fair rating. I believe that I enjoyed this one more than the other. Nothing specifically jumped out but it was pleasant enough to listen to.
Never heard of John Martyn. Is he like the Arther Russell of Eric Claptons? Or the acid casualty of Paul Simons? I like that this guy has done way more of the right drugs than Clapton. The story of being lured to Jamaica to work with Scratch to get him back into music is pretty ridiculous. Not a bad album. Still all a bit too adult contemporary white guy world music for me, even though I mildly like it. I’d like to hear a totally underproduced album of he and Scratch and no one else locked together for a month. I heard the geese and the squealing train in the outside ambience of Small Hours. Shout out Ethan AD on the title.
👽🫦
Really quite enjoyable instrumentation, particularly the synth wobble bass and calypso percussion
Sounds like it was the inspiration for Dave Matthews Band. Not bad, just kind of jam music. I didn’t mind it
Enjoyable, easy listening album with a surprising range of instruments. Ultimately just falls short of 4 stars though
Good background music for study but didn't spark much interest
very interesting
Interesting but not special, pretty nice job.
Didn't hate it. Distinct voice.
JMC WILL RELISTEN 👂
Listens: 2 Enjoyed Meh The music is excellent and creates such a relaxing vibe. I'm just not really a fan of his vocals especially over this type of music
I enjoyed this album, though not quite as much as the last John Martyn album we had on this list, “Solid Air.” (I thought the songs were better on that one.) There’s a lot of great music and the production has some interesting choices. Occasionally I felt the production gave the music a kind of muddy sound but just as often I found it hypnotic. Same goes for Martyn’s vocals — he’s an excellent, emotive singer but chooses to bury it on a few of these tracks. “Dancing” is a particularly fun song. Overall I like it. I ended up going back and listening to “Solid Air” a bunch of times after the initial listen so I’m expecting to do the same with this album.
I didn't love the singing voice but I gotta admit by the end of track 1 I was groovin and jammin a bit! "Couldn't Love You More" is such a wonderful song. I used to listen to a singer named Marcus Foster sing that song a lot and I hadn't heard it in years before this album came up on this list. It was really nice to be reconnected with that track. Interesting album cover. I love the composition of the diagonal line going across the artwork. 3/5!
Listened to on 10/30/22 3/5 Favorite song: couldn’t love you more Beautiful ballads with some beach vibes and easy background music
Background acoustic guitar music
Not going to be my favourite record but surprisingly listenable. Has a good flow too.
nice music, not a fan of the vocals but a reasonable album
This was completely new to me, and I liked this quite a bit. Sort of R&B meets progressive rock. I like the song about the big muff. Planning to listen more. 3 stars.
A few songs I wouldn’t care if I never heard again but some redeeming tracks.
Interesting album. I kind of liked it.
The first track tricked me into thinking I’d like the album more than I did
The vocals in the opnener are a bit rough but they mellow out as the album continues. Small Hours feels very ahead of its time. Overall not really my thing but pleasantly listenable throughout.
This one was a bit of a head scratcher for me. This album had interesting moments, but when placed within the history of jazz fusion and ambient music I feel like there are much better and more influential examples from this time period. It wasn’t unpleasant though and I’m certainly glad to have heard it.
Tough call... on the one hand, this was pretty cruisy something-or-other and went well with a Saturday morning walk. It wasn't loud and obnoxious, it was nicely produced and all instruments/vocals were well played. On the other hand, it's yet another artist from the UK I honestly didn't need to hear. Will they stop with the constant pushing of the UK here? Not a fucking chance. If I want to make it to 1001 I'll just have to put up with that, but it's taking me a while to learn some tolerance. 3/5.
It wasn't as good as 'Solid Air' but a fine follow up to that album nonetheless. 3.5/5
Small Hour and Dancing were the best tracks. The rest of the album was boring.
Such a cool mix of influences on this that make for an interesting listen - though there aren't many tracks that I'm really gonna want to revisit so for now i'll give this like a high 3
Like a funky, sometimes folky remix of Anthony and the Johnsons.
Sounds like Martyn was aiming for a lot on this record. Pretty odd production with a heavy focus on synthesisers, combined with rock, jazz and some funk. I enjoyed it but won't be coming back to it
Gave this one a couple of listens but still don't have much to say about it. I think I enjoyed it?
Really good album, didn't expect the level of serenity there was in the last song, but goddamn that was so nice. 3 I'm sure the whole thing is going to grow on me, just like Solid Air
-Opening track, "Dealer" is probably the strongest on the album. Solid fun synth-y-ish stuff going on. reminded me of some parts of stuff from the 'Who Are You" album by The Who. -Most of the rest of the album is kind of boring and low-energy. "Dancing" is nice, and "Big Muff" has some okay bits. -Most is pretty slow, boring songs. -"Small Hours" borders on like, AI-generated soothing ASMR music. Just nothing happening at all.
Couldn`t Love You More é
Never heard of this guy. Pretty chill vibes on this one. Not super amazing, but totally music I could relax to.
Well produced and played, MOR adult music, more for the background
Interesting album. Liked it more than I thought I would. Very varied and, as a result, a bit patchy.
I really like ”Couldn’t Love You More” and ”Small Hours”. Had an interesting sound otherwise, Martyn’s voice was a bit coarse on most of the songs
I didn’t hear the whole album but I was underwhelmed. It didn’t hurt my ears and was inoffensive so low 3*
Don't know, why it is a AYMHBYD.... the only track that really justifies the album is the progressive jam Small Hours. (5/10) FT: Small Hours
Liked ‘certain surprise’ . Not as good as Solid Air album
Didn’t really like the first half but he recovered nicely for the end
Cool guitar effects and very dub influenced style. Feels kind of like world music-influenced pop.
Lacking the talent of Van Morrison (the most obvious comparison) or the Neville Brothers (perhaps the less obvious comparison, but still, this reminded me in places of Yellow Moon), Martyn works the same white blues territory as the former with similar love for its black roots--not just in soul but jazz, too. His voice is silly, no doubt, but malleable enough to attain the tender devotional quality he's reaching for. Some of the arrangments have a delicate muscularity. One of those is called 'Certain Surprise'. Another is called 'Dancing'. Yet another is called 'Big Muff'. I repeat: 'Big Muff'. I can't even.
Hi- Dealer, Certain Surprise Feels like an alt-universe Dinosaur Jr. where J.Mascis got his start opening for Jimmy Buffett. I like it a lot more than I expected I would, but I will say...John is not a great singer. Guitar work here is amazing, though his vocal work...is definitely not. Jimi Hendrix was also known as a guitar god, while not being completely vocally complex, so this is not an antipattern for this time. Dealer is a strong opening number, and the rest of the album is pleasant and easy to listen to, with Certain Surprise being a standout. Closing out with Small Hours evokes early morning sunrises over the ocean, it's very pleasant and a great way to send off the listener.
Not what I expected at all - enjoyable enough. Vocals were completely unexpected.
Some quality songs on here. The amusingly titled 'Big Muff', 'Dancing' and 'Couldn't love you more' which made it onto my Spotify playlist for 2022 and made a tear come out. I don't know what genre this is, but seems a big ole' mashup of whatever worked, and his raspy voice is nicely unusual.
Nice chill and groovy record.
I liked the first album we heard from him more
Jazz and funky beats on the moon. And a tune called “Big Muff,” which I want to look up the meaning of. And some ambient.
First listen to album and artist. Quality stuff and worth a listen.
All the different styles. Santana, sting, the list could go on.
Pretty easy listening at times, but some moments
Interesting. I had never listened to John Martyn before. I'm not a big fan of his voice.
Enjoyable, sounds like a precursor to 80's synth.
Easy breezy - apparently this album was written after a visit to Jamaica revitalized the artist. It’s not Reggae, but it’s on island time.
Boring. I found myself just not listening to it at times. Normally when an album pops up here that I’ve never heard of it’s some British oddball stuff that has/had no US impact. Feel like this is one of those. Evidently people claim this to be the original trip-hop and led to Portishead etc. for that reason I’ll round a 2.5 up to 3
Nothing special / not bad I'll probably forget all about this album in a day. Oops, I already did
Love the music, but not a huge fan of the vocals on most tracks, I might even like this record better with no vocals. That being said, John Martyn clearly has an extremely unique and distinctive voice so more power to him and those who appreciate it, especially when used interestingly in this world music western fusion context. I also thought on certain songs like “couldn’t love you more”, the vocals were extremely beautiful, but in that case the music was pretty basic. Can’t have it all on this record, so 3 stars.
Ok. Above average 70s soft rock. At its best, it sounded a little like upbeat Grateful Dead. Uninspiring and inoffensive.
Cool but SO BORING
Pretty interesting. Prefer Solid Air. 6/10
Rating: 6/10 Best songs: Dealer
Never heard of this guy before. This is pretty low-key with some interesting arrangements and overall quite a fresh sound for 1977. Nice working from home background music, which I suppose both is and isn’t a compliment.
This is definitely not my thing but but it was a pleasant listen.
Fairly middle of the road to my ear. Not a bad record though… listen-able! Good last track!
Enjoyed this more as it went along actually! At first I thought he was a bit Paul Simon then I got into his own stlye. Particularly the last v low fi song
Not too bad but a bit repetitive in places.
Funky, a little psychedelic, jammy. I enjoyed this record, don't know if I'd ever revisit it but while it was on I was into it!
Experimental ambient de pop - folk -rock- blues - rock. Agradable
Couldn't love you more.
smooooooooooooooth (great closer)
Nice, Need to listen more
This album could be an album to vibe out to. The synth is mellow and the singer's voice is very airy and quiet, adding to the overall feel of the album. Personally, I thought it was alright, but it's a bit too "quiet" for me. Favorite track: Dancing
It was ok.
I expected folk, not dubby cosmic funk (for the most part). Interesting in places but not something I'd listen to again. Can't say I'm a fan of Martyns voice either, sounds like a drunk old bloke down the pub. 2.5, making a generous 3
Deece but was hoping for better given his other stuff I know
Quite a nice listen. Nothing special but felt a lot more modern than a 1960s album. Quite a bit of Gomez in there. I liked it.
Didn't like this after the first track or two but it really grew on me as it went on. Really nice chill vibes. 7/10
Better than the last two albums. Was hoping for a bit more of a dub feel to it.
Yeh decent I’ll go back to this
Actually not bad
I enjoyed it at times. Very very mellow. His vocal style was sort of different, I’m not sure in a way I appreciated. The last track seemed a very odd addition.
This had some great textures but nothing grabbed me
Tranquilo y suave. Sin estridencias
Another "acquired taste" but at least its better than Billy Bragg
Not as good as Penguin Orchestra Cafe, but I liked it and the album cover was dope
- Learned about the genre "folk-jazz" - it's got some funky prog in it but the vocals and mellow melodies are along the line with folk. Very interesting mixture of genres, almost feels surreal. - Good album but not hooking me, which somewhat has to do with the raspy voice
nice background music
Neither good nor bad. Entirely forgettable.
i really like the noodling and atmosphere on small hours to finish the album. the rest is fine... seems like a sedated eric clapton or joe cocker.
not so bad, a bit slowish for me
There are parts of this album that I like *a lot*. Especially the parts where John Martyn isn't trying to sing. When his voice blends in with the music, it's really good. When he grates, it's REALLY grating. Luckily, that doesn't dominate most tracks, and I enjoyed the album overall. 3 stars.
Important and influential, but I wouldn’t seek this out
Got some like ZZ Top vibes from this album. Pretty good album, it's like smooth jazzy / soul. It kinda felt like John Martyn was whispering sweet nothings into my ears for the entirely of the album. Oh. OH. This is fuckin' music, isn't it?
Pretty interesting, funky ass bass. No standout songs for me, but makes nice background listening.
It was alright, I definitely was not blown away by it, and I definitely won't listen to it again.
Lee Scratch Perry helped him write Big Muff. Good song!
Was rather boring 😴
Listening session: june 30th, while chilling at home Listened to before: no Thoughts: this didn’t stand out to me and at times I disliked the singers voice. Can’t really understand why this album made the list Favourite track: Certain Surprise
i don'llike how this guy sings
2nd John Martyn album from the generator and I'm disappointed. I absolutely loved the first one and it was one of the biggest discoveries from this list for me. But this one's vibe was just off. The songs were maybe ok but lacked something that'd make them special like his other album 2/5
Melkonen sekasikiö. Kuunnellessa mietin että mikä kuvailisi tätä levyä. Menin sitte ruokapuolelle ja tästä voisi tulla mieleen raikas kesäsalaatti, jossa käytetään kastikkeena läskisoosia.
A little dull. 2/5
Not quite like Solid Air which is very important to me - still cool but lacks the soul of what I know as John Martyn
Day898 - probably would have been a better album all around if steve winwood did the singing too
At least this British guy isn’t trying to ride The Beatles coattails. Instead he’s ripping off infinitely better African-American funk acts and sucking ass at it. This sounds like it would soundtrack a porno
This made me want to go listen to proggy music, but not this one. I was intrigued by the whole thing but never really connected. New name for me so good to know.
Absolute garbage. I could easily have gone multiple lifetimes without hearing this and would be happier for it.
No thank you!
So forgettable that in the afternoon I had forgotten I had already listen to it in the morning
Sums up the 70s. Trying to invent new genres, mostly drug fuelled, and 90% if it not really hitting the mark. Fairly easy listening and blissfully short by 70s prog standards, but I won’t be playing again.
2.25
-yeah idk, i just… couldn’t get into this. the whole thing felt sort of cheesy and overproduced, and i couldn’t remember what any individual song sounded like -his voice is interesting, i don’t think it’s for me but still cool to hear i guess. Solid Air was pretty good so i don’t think John Martyn is incapable of making good music. but this was not it to me -Favorites: Smiling Stranger, Big Muff
There’s probably other people who do this better, right? Dancing and one other were cool but a lot of this felt like an extra chore on top of the room cleaning i was doing.
With a voice like this, just give up music bro. Its like his voice is comming out of his ass. The song "I couldnt love you more" started prety aigth but then his awfull voice came and it just sound stupid. The whole album is just boring, weird and definitively not something you need to hear before you die. When he isnt singing, some instrumental part sounds decent (especially on the last 3 songs) so it saves it from being a 1/5.
2*
i don’t really have much to say about this one. the sonic landscapes are nice and lush but it all kind of blends into the background for me
Yeah, not really for me. Felt a bit wishy washy and never captured my attention.
Smooth and a little croony, a solid if forgettable album.
I really enjoyed "Solid Air" from Martyn, but this one lacked a lot of the best elements from that record, without replacing them with something of similar value.
Speak up man
Meh. It sounds like an early effort at a 1 man band + resampling. Couldn’t get into it & it became annoying. A 2.
p381. 1977. 2 stars. Not his best work. See "Solid Air" for that, which is also on the list. This strays into hippy-ish noodling with no focus far too much, and he sounds half-cut on most of the tracks.
A real pet peeve of mine is when an album has rad cover art but dull music. See also: The Healer by John Lee Hooker, most Weezer albums.
4/10: music - 🌊😎☀️, vocals - 🚬💊🧟 I liked some the soundscapes of this album, but I really didn’t vibe with the whole Lemmy-meets-Louis Armstrong-meets-Nick Drake delivery of John Martyn’s vocals. I can hear the influence on later, better music but my god do I wish this was an instrumental album. Also, calling a song ‘Big Muff’ is absolutely hilarious.
Like if ZZ Top did yacht rock in the 80s.
This does sound like the 70s to me, in that the musicality is quiet, subdued, and smooth. I prefer louder and more raw and did not enjoy this.
Not really for me
Nothing here for me
Pas trop ma came
Some really cool and different songs on here and while John’s voice is definitely unique, I can’t see myself coming back to this very often
Boring.
aburrido
Pretty forgettable. Not bad, but just didn't stay with me in any way.
I expected folk rock. What I got was half an album of interesting musical compositions with a weak grating voice and half an album of folk rock.
His seventh album. Folk / Folk Rock. Interesting vocals. Dealer is quite a funky opening track, it sounds like it's performed by Whisper from Live & Let Die at times. Big Muff is a hell of a title for a song, the lyrics could be construed as a guy who's at his wit's end with muff addiction 😃 The album as a whole was unremarkable until Small Hours which is very cool.
Vage stem heeft die gast, 2 reten
Not great
Decent 2,5
This was about as exciting as watching "Survivor: One World". Oh, longtime U.S. "Survivor" fans know what I'm talking about. When one watches that season, one starts to wonder how that show is a product of the same show that gave us "Pearl Islands". We only have one world, so don't waste too much of it with quiet easy listening music. Favorite Track: "Small Hours".
Okay I guess.
Odd songs. I liked the song towards the end about dancing or whatever, the follow up was good too. Not my slice, though.
Not as bad as the other reviews made it out to be, but it was certainly boring. I enjoyed Dancing and that was about it.
oh, well, lovely harmonies, however, Martyn can hardly sing.
This album...wasn't very good. It was mostly inoffensive, but its just kind of not good either. I don't need to listen to John Martyn or particularly One World again.
I didn't know it was possible to sing as if you're falling asleep while in terrible pain
Big Muff!! Fave track: Big Muff
I don‘t know. I like some Echo effects on the guitars, but that’s about it. The Album is often described as esoteric or ambient, I think it’s pretty boring.
Meh.
outro reaally saved this from being a one
What the h*ck is even this?
whatever
Haven't listened yet but I took one look at the album art and I'm ready to give this guy a full fiver. Update: I listened to it and didn't like it that much.
Not my thing at all. Annoying vocals, slow, ponderous music with very little of note. The last track in particular drags on far too long. Big Muff (lol) was alright, as well as some of the more experimental sounding stuff.
Bof. Sans relief, rien de bien exceptionnel. Ce sera un 2 bien mérité.
Some of the songs were decent, but most were not great.
There was a part of me that thought that I would be giving this a higher rating due to the overwhelming negative reviews, but I don't think I like this. I also don't get the experimental genre on here unless you're talking about using a pedal.
Album #79 John Martyn: One World This album has the misfortune of breaking my 10 album 4-star minimum streak. I've never heard of Joh Martyn so I wasn't sure what to expect, and after listening to this album I still feel like I've never heard of John Martyn. This album left no real impression on me, some decent instrumentals, but I wasn't huge on his voice. Maybe it just seems extra mediocre because it followed non-stop peak, but either way not an album I'm interested in returning to. Best Songs: Couldn't Love You More, Dancing, Small Hours Worst Song: Big Muff Score out of 10: 5
Good instruments but the singing really starts to annoy by the end. What is he doing with his voice?
Just. So. Dull.
I do like John Martyn, just not this album. The production is too dated. It aged poorly. Give me 'Solid Air' over this one. But the last song is fantastic, though. Too bad the rest of the album does not keep up.
Just there. Nothing memorable.
I tried to get into the historical context of the album, but man the songs are really boring and drag for too long. I mean, they are not repulsive, but wouldn't want it for anything else than background music. 5/10
In common with other John Martyn albums I quite like the dreamy instrumental stuff but find his voice annoying. Bearing in mind his best album Solid Air is also on the list don’t think this album should have made the cut. 2/5 16/2/26
Idk
Never really listened to John Martin and after this won’t be rushing to listen to more. Found it really uninspiring and struggled to get through the whole album.
Pretty dull. I could maybe stick it on for a nap. I was getting dressed to it this morning and it just turned into background sounds. Nothing of note here.
Can't tell if he had to be closer or further from the microphone
An echoing, often slow soundscape, evoking images of the outdoors where nothing really happens. It is an album essentially driven by its ambient sound and Martyn's slurring, whispering voice. "Couldn't Love You More" and "Small Hours" are the standout tracks here, although the album is fairly consistent throughout.
Boring. But not bad.
A bit uneven, and I don't like his voice, but it has interesting moments. I like experimentation, especially in "Small Hours". 2.5/5
I felt gross listening to this.
I'm not sure how to feel about this album. Sometimes I think I'm liking it and sometimes I think it's boring or unpleasant to my ears. I doubt I would listen to the whole album again. Maybe a song here and there. But you have to get used to the voice and that's easier on some songs than others. Unfortunately, I think there's barely any songs that I would call good. Honestly, the more you get into the album, the more awful it gets.
Solid Air
Ingen ny favoritt
Might have been good if it wasn't simply boring.
Too mystic for me
there's a lot to like here, but unfortunately i would rather chew my own arm off before listening again to John Martyn doing whatever faux blues bullshit he thinks he's doing with his voice
Meh.
Eh? "Chewbacca sings to a vaguely pornographic 80s soundtrack"
I enjoyed the music - a quirky mix off weird and funky - but the vocals, not so much. Martyn seems to like singing through his nose and not fully pronouncing words. Maybe that was his style, but it did nothing for me. Shame because like I said I liked the music.
It was early days in the list the last time we had John Martyn. Forgot all about him, didn't think to see him again. I was young and naive at that point in the list. This album will be forgotten like the last.
last song was cool but overall it really did not blow me away
Jazzy folk world fusion kinda thing with some experimental leanings. Martyn’s voice and playing gets some peculiar, textured sounds with the use of echo and reverb. Some pleasant rhythms to be found. It’s overall a unique sounding record with some interesting bits and parts that lose my attention. While I found myself occasionally grooving or thinking “that’s interesting”, the highs weren’t that high for me and the lows weren’t unpleasant, but forgettable. I certainly haven’t heard much like it, but I doubt I’ll revisit it.
This album is a great example of high highs and low lows. Unfortunately, I heard more lows than highs. Six of eight songs were forgettable for me. The other two hit me right in the feels. One World is a beautiful song about finding purpose. Small Hours is a ethereal experience centered around loving as fully as possible. I didn't want that song to be over. I can certainly hear the effort in this album. However, John's vocals just do not do it for me at ALL. I do not like the raspiness nor do I enjoy not understanding a word he's saying. Nothing super memorable in the instrumentals. I thought it was well produced, but I also really got thrown off by the trombone solo tossed in there. Did not fit the vibe of the album for me. The closing track really was something special, but I don't feel like it redeemed what kinda felt like a waste of time. I kinda want my 25 minutes that weren't the two tracks I named back. 2.3/5.
His voice in the first song made me scared about what I was in for. And that fear continued at moments throughout the album. However, I appreciated the back half of the album, especially the final ambient instrumental track, Small Hours. It gave War on Drugs vibes. A varied and searching album, but not one I needed to listen to before I died. 4/10,
2.5 Title track was great. Rest was not
Fine, not good, not bad, a bit boring.
enjoyed some of the instrumentals, love the album cover, vocals were a hard listen. not for me
Mixing drugs and alcohol… the album! (2.5)
it is oke
Favorite songs: Dealer, Couldn't Love You More, Small Hours
I wasn't wild about this one, but I appreciated it as an album to "live in" rather than an album to listen to. Immersive soundscapes (apparently pretty revolutionary for their time) make for a very pleasant 45 minutes, and the last track is basically straight off of Brian Eno's "Music For Airports" (another album that I reserve for only my most stoned or my most stressed out moments). I'd be interested to hear more albums from different points in Martyn's discography, because it's extensive and this sounds like an album full of sonic experiments to me. Wonder what he wound up sounding like in subsequent decades.
“Dancing” and “Dealer” saved it from a 1
Poco para decir. No me generó nada. 3/10
4/10
Really odd voice, low in the mix and lacking in substance. Some good technical playing, but not really for me.
It reminded me of early Police if Sting had chronic bronchitis
Not for me.
Interesting artist. I enjoyed some of this but his voice is weird.
Very dull, but chill. 2.75
Never heard about this guy before, in theory I should really like it but it's kind of boring, some nice moments maybe and music is not horrible but I don't really care for it, can not see more than 3 stars, but will probably give 2
The conversation that should have happened but never did. Record Company, 'John, find someone else to sing on your album'. 'OK', John replied. 2/5.
Better than I expected. Never heard of John before, but I was impressed. Raw unique vocals. Not my favorite album but I can appreciate what it was trying to do.
Album No. 0082 on my list. Eh, I don’t really know what to make of this album. It’s kinda groovy, but I didn’t like the songs themselves for the most part and didn’t enjoy John Martyn’s singing in particular. I guess I’ll add only “One World” (the title track) to my playlist. The rest was not necessarily bad, but rather a bit… well… forgettable. Sorry to say that, I guess this one is just not for me. A narrow 2/5 stars.
I heard it through and through- from the first to the last song. I did not like it. I will still give it a 2.
I listened to this twice and nothing really sticks in my mind a few hours later as I go to rate it. There's some quite interesting and textured sounds here but overall I just found it a bit flat
01) Dealer - 6,5 02) One World - 5,5 03) Smiling Stranger - 5,5 04) Big Muff - 6,5 05) Couldn't Love You More - 6,0 06) Certain Surprise - 5,5 07) Dancing - 6,0 08) Small Hours - 5,0 TOTAL: 5,81 (58/100) Current ranking: 620/749
Extra star for Couldn't Love You More the rest of this sucked ass
Not my thing; dig the album art
I really don't like his voice, and find the music, apart from "Small Hours" to be quite bland. 2.5 stars
Funky but chill. I liked that one song.
Change the vocals and this could be something special. Like a lot of the ideas and music, but just cannot stand that voice.
Occasional interesting parts but didnt enjoy it overall. Standout song: Dancing Small Hours
2.5
Eh, this was fine. It was music. It was boring. It had no energy. He mumbled the entire time. It wasn't bad, but it just was.
Let's be honest, no one has ever heard of this guy and this album really has no business being on this list. First off, I cannot stand his voice, there are some okay instrumentals but this guy cannot sing. Also I have no idea what they are talking about with the trip hop comparison, I don't see it at all. High 2.
so meh
Decent music but the muzzy vocal recording really got under my skin for some reason?
nahhhh.... this is definitely not my bag. That said... I can't help but wonder if John Martyn's music and singing style has influenced Cameron Winter of Geese fame. I'm hearing some similarities. Anyways, I can't rate this higher than a 2.
This album cover reminds me of Arc of a Diver by Steve Winwood. That wasn't a good start to listening to this one. Thankfully, this album isn't as awful as Steve Winwood's album, but not by much. I did like Small Hours, but the rest of the album is mostly forgettable. Solid Air is the better album on this list.
Not good, but not actively bad either
Mouef
The vocalist needs a fat glass of water ASAP.
naja
It's fine. Just nothing I could latch on to.
I liked the ‘vibe’ of some of these tunes eg Small Hours but overall I will not be re-listening in a hurry:|
Midt på treet, litt slitsam stemme i lengden.
so experimental but damn that was a weird one
Ok 2/5
When talented people make new age music?
Little boring
It has a strange mix of genres, with elements of jazz, blues, funk, electronic and folk-rock. The one consistent element between songs is the echo on the guitar. I enjoyed the variety and most of the music itself was decent, but I really didn't like his mumbly singing.
Like, is this guy just going to whisper from across the room for forty minutes? It drags. No spark. Spins: 1 Playlist Additions: - Couldn't Love You More - Small Hours
Quick and final. Mediocre is the best word to describe this. The guy's voice is pretty mid for the average singer but unironically is just interesting enough that it gives the album more seasoning. Still there's really nothing to sing praises about apart from the decent end track. Not my thing but it wasn't awful. Top 1: Small Hours Everything else is MID 2.25-2.50/5
I didn’t hate it, it’s just nothing I’d ever actively seek out to listen to again.
2 stars for the cover art; Really disappointed by the album. Questioning if this is Really in 1001 albums you must listen to or 1001 you should avoid. Total Fail for me.
It’s fine. The dub influence is clear. I don’t mind anything on here, but I probably wouldn’t listen again.
No idea what that was about.
Has a couple of potentially interesting components, but they ultimately don't really go anywhere or carry the record in a long-term fashion. Really quite bland and uninspiring overall.
It was better than solid air. Personal enjoyment: 2/5 Relevance to this list: 2/5
One of the best albums? Doubtful. One of the best album covers? Absolutely. Just wish it was used on something way more cerebral or flamboyant.
