2 There’s some thing about 90s R&B that I just don’t like. It’s not quite R&B it’s not quite rap and it all sounds the same. Really not a fan of the lyrics on this one either, could’ve used a touch more nuance.

2.5 Having never listened to D'Angelo but familiar with the name in the context of great albums, I expected more. This is a fine R&B album - It incorporated some elements of funk I dug, but overall it lacked versatility and didn't offer me a ton of memorable moments. Some of the songs felt longer than they needed to be, which left me a little bored by the end. Musically and vocally it's airtight, just not very interesting. Favorite songs: Shit, Damn, Motherfucker, Cruisin'

Every song seemed to be the same. Back up singers came across stronger than the lead.

For some reason I thought I was going to like thos more than I did. It was ok

90's R&B to the max. It is the "ahhhs", "owwws", bass, falsetto, and ranging of anything to come out of this genre around the turn of the millennium. And.... it's boring. So many came ofter and did it better. If this is a cornerstone, then it is one hidden and structurally great but the real magnificence of the building is everything on top. I appreciate this album but didn't enjoy this album--I would have expected the opposite.

Now I understand why I keep seeing women on YouTube losing their shit over Johnny Mathis, Tom Jones and the Righteous Bros...This is what’s been passing for “romance” all this time. No wonder Buble is getting the bag...the bar’s been set so low. Thought it was overrated then, still think it’s overrated now.

Panomusiikkia jota ei kyllä levyllistä jaksa putkeen kuunnella.

Textbook kutumusaa. Siinä toimii, muuten ei

zzzzzzzz

Have tried this previously, don’t get the hype.

Ironically Spotify played a Curtis Mayfield track after this album, which was a great track. It wasnt a D'Angelo track though

ok R and b with a jazz influence.

This album is very smooth and well-produced, but not really my bag. I didn’t connect much with with the themes of the songs. The music was well done but I got bored well before a song ended and found myself waiting for the next one. Not long into the next song the feeling repeated. The talent on this album is really high, and I wouldn’t mind hearing this played somewhere in the background I guess. It isn’t something that connected with me really at all and I have any desire to put on again.

Not awful, but not my jam.

Not exactly the best part of the 90s

Sadly, this is really boring. I'd never heard anything besides the infamous video of his and I gotta say...meh

Little to slow for my liking. Good melodies though.

I’ve never quite grasped where best to listen to Nu Soul. It’s not for the club, it’s not for the car, it’s not for house parties, it’s not for dancing in your room. It might be background music - study music? A whole gig’s worth seems like a chore… It goes without saying he’s got a great voice. But I can’t stand the organ wail and the artificial finger clicks that have to be on every track. It’s just not a style of music I’m ever in the mood to reach for.

First listen. Ok for me.

Freakin music lol

Lite mer jazzig.

Jazzy hiphop. Too mild for me.

Whole album passed me by. It’s an acquired taste maybe? Not my thing at all but I’m sure there’s some folk would buzz off it. Two stars for me though. Never likely to ever want to return to it.

Not what I like, but it was consistent. 6.1/10

Good job of not being my thing.

Sounds like a Space Jam OST b-side album, admittedly with more mother fuckers and bitches. Decent album to ball to but nothing more.

Didn't offend me but it just ain't my thing. Best track: Brown Sugar

Really boring. Not annoying as such, but I can't imagine this as anything else but background music.

Too smooth, not my flavour

Was a little underwhelmed by everything but the title track - I enjoyed how the album sounded and really liked the soul influences, but lyrically it felt lacking.

Not my kind of music

Not really my type of music but fairly inoffensive

Not as bad as I thought it would be, but still not my vibe.

Not for me.

Better than expected but not my cup of tea

Verstreute 2.3

i can appreciate this but it just isn't my genre

Smooth but a little same same

This definitely isn't my thing. I mean I guess it's okay for what it is, but I still didn't like it.

Fine early R&B, I bet it was influential for the genre and fans, but just didn't do much for me.

Not really for me. Not enough old soul or 90's hip hop.

Is this a stand out R&B album?

This is sexy time music

Bland unengaging RnB. Inexplicably popular

Will Circle Back.

Was very bored with this and didn’t really like anything on this

Not for me. 1 star

I’m learning that I don’t have a lot of love for traditional R/b. Which is funny cause I love blues but for some reason this type of music just doesn’t do anything for me. I have noticed that it works better for me when the singer is female, but something about this album just didn’t click with me at all. It’s definitely not a bad album, it’s very soothing and incredibly smooth. But at the end of the day it’s like trying to sell the most luxurious and smooth chocolate to a diabetic, it just doesn’t matter how smooth and creamy it is, I’m still gunna need an insulin shot for this.

How does one listen to this and say to themselves. I did good?

Not a fan of this soul / R&B style. Just not for me.

Sickly sweet.

Do you ever get the feeling somebodies taking the absolute piss. Well the fact this album is on this list is doing exactly that- the best thing about it is the deceptive name- I almost want D’angelo to be a superstar DJ because anything would be better than this. Best track- ‘lady’ Worst track- ‘Jonz in my bonz’ 0.5/10

D'Angelo Every Song Sounded Like The One Before 🤷 Favourite - the first track Least favourite - the first track 1/10

There's very little soul in this neo-soul. It's really basic lo-fi beats to relax study to with a guy whispering softly about how he's going to sexily sex you today, tomorrow, and forever.

Ritmo cansino. Todas las canciones iguales

I know people praise this - I just can’t stand this type of soft, buttery music. It bores me

Not my kind of style.

soort van Prince Very Very Light... bijna doorschijnend Light... wie iets spannenders wil, zoek dan op internet naar The Tenth Drop

R&B ist nicht so meins

Little to no variation within each song.

This is just going to be another one that I don’t understand. I like some types of soul like The Spinners, Quincy Jones and Isaac Hayes but I don’t see the appeal here. My biggest problem is that there’s no melody, listen to Marvin Gaye’s What’s Going On and compare. The notes seemed to be going mostly in a straight line never bothering to go up or down . I did however enjoy the beats and production. Just need to kick it up a notch.

Not a good listen, the overwhelming bass hid any traces of decent vocal arrangement and the droning rhythm didn't help

A bad and stressful day today for the family prevented my full attention to this album. But so far managed not to miss one single day of this process so determined to keep that going. Unless it’s 60’s classic soul this genre of music will never get my attention. I found this album instantly dislikeable and tedious. Awful. 1/5 19/3/26

God this is just so vacuous. 'Music to have sex to' shite

Nothing to interest me here

Like almost every 90's US neo-soul release, it fails the music test: take away the vocals and what have you left? The only redeeming positive from listening to this is that I'm still alive, although why it is thought that I needed to hear this before the inevitable is beyond me. After a while it got switched off. Heard before ❌️ Listened this time ✅️ 60% Revisit ❌️ ★☆☆☆☆ (2/10) Total reviewed : 234 Already owned : 53 Purchased : 12 To buy list : 3 Nope : 166

Not for me. 1/5

I really don't like this style of music, modern(ish) R'n'B. The soft singing, tedious groove guitars. The second track Alright really annoyed me, it went on for much longer than it should have, and When We Get By was basically just that line sung again and again for 5 minutes in a falsetto. About the highest praise I can offer is that this is at least better than Maxwell's Urban Hang Suite but almost anything would be.

I just can't with this one. Every song sounds the same and isn't something I really vibe with.

Unfortunately it did nothing for me.

Reduced my IQ by 17 points

The irony of this being put out on Virgin Records.... smooth vibe and great voice, but I just hate this kind of music. Same tempo the entire album. This was a real struggle to finish. 1/5

All the songs sounded the same.

Unimpressive

<Pulls out spray bottle> No! Bad! Stop It!

point1.

Langweilig! Shit!

Worst for me.

Dieses Gefrickel… geh mir weg!

well deserved 1

Not good. Generic slimy RnB

meh.. r&b... not my thing.

Lame r and b.

If you wanted to simulate the experience of waiting in a long endless queue, this album would be that. My brain screamed for some stimulation, it couldn't take the monotonous drone of this same same album for another minute. If this was innovative in any way I can't see it, its an evolutionary dead end imho. Hard Pass.

Boring.

This sounds nothing like the Rolling Stones classic I was expecting. Rock legend Mick Jagger tries his hand in a falsetto register while the band seems to be just about pulling off an RnB flava. I'm disappointed that this one doesn't include their popular hits Bump 'n' Jack Flash or (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction, Motherfucka.

It is this stuff which makes this process unpleasant. Lazy low fi, languorous, lacking in invention and or innovation. A pastiche of a pastiche, I don't think this is what Marvin Gaye had hoped for. How's the snare rim tap drumming going? Seriously, it sounds like Jack Black taking the piss. Awful. And I listened to the whole thing. Dimery death freaks: don't bother.

This album is an incredible accomplishment: it achieves a level of uninterestingness that surpasses even that LTJ Bukem drum and bass compilation album. 237 albums rated so far and this would be in my bottom 3.

Odiei.

Ooh, yeah, I love you so much girl, slide over here cos I'm sexy, mmm, yeah like that, uh uh, yeah over here girl, that's it girl. Uh huh. Why did you walk away girl? So sexy. Now I'm lonely, uh uh.

The opening track had a good groove, then spiralled into the blandest RnB I'd ever heard!

I mean this guy has a good voice but this is just not music that I enjoy. I basically hated every minute of this. Nothing else really to say about this one. 1/5

Den lilla torsken...

Eh, not my jam. Good R&B I guess.

No jednak nie

None of these songs should be over 4:30 minutes Its always: verse, chorus, verse, chorus, chorus, chorus, chorus Monotone

The Emperors New Soul?

I fell asleep one minute and 22 seconds into the first track. The bus I was driving plunged over a cliff and took 13 lives in the crash. You’ll be hearing from my lawyer, D’Angelo.

Even if I was in the mood, I still wouldn't listen to this. Smooth though.

Not for me. Too syruppy and sweet.

Definitely not for me.

1 Star (2/15)

Featuring nonstop vocalizing over repetitive jams, this album wore out its welcome *fast*. There's so much going on in the vocals that there's no real focus to the songs. On top of that, the verses and choruses (within the same song) often share the same chord progressions, which robs these songs of any sense of forward motion and causes these already-long songs to drag on even longer. D'Angelo pulls off the one-man band stunt well, and the production and execution are well done, but ultimately this album seems like a stylistic exercise, an attempt to make something that *sounds* great. Too bad the same amount of effort wasn't put into fleshing out the songs.

Irgendwie stimmt beides.

You know it’s a one star when you’re checking how many tracks are left from song 3 onwards.

I just don't like R&B

I don't get it. Every song is 2-3 minutes too long. His voice is fine, but most of the songs are just him doing his best Michael Jackson impersonation. I hate giving 1 stars, but this is about as bad as it gets. Would be a 2 if the songs weren't 5-6 minutes each.

I'm sure this is great but unfortunately this genre of music sends me to sleep.

All these songs have the same energy, same emotion and little variation. I'm not a big fan of heavy falsettos either. There's no crescendo.

Not my style

There was nothing about this that I enjoyed.

Almost unbearable. So cloying it made my teeth hurt!

Apathy is the only word that comes to mind. I don’t exactly hate it, but I definitely don’t need it in my life.

This was unbelievably boring to me. Couldn't wait for it to be over.

Buuffff

Awful, generic mush. There was literally no reason to listen beyond the first few minutes, as there was no variety whatsoever. Every song involves lots of "wooing" and "oohing", with some bland instruments playing in the background. The singer sounds like someone has a tight hold of his testicles and is squeezing hard on them. I was expecting (and I quote) "earnest lyrics about love and romance", but what I got was "oohh, wahh, oohh, wahh, baby, oooh, yeaah, oohh, whoooo, waah, oohh, fly away, oooh, baby, ohh, oooh, oww!". It's drivel so bad that it goes through the stage of being so bad it's good, then back to being just bad again. It's so extremely bad, at times I thought this was some sort of parody, but sadly it's just fifty minutes of utter shite. One star.

Really like Sexual Chocolate (Coming to America)

In a nutshell: fuckboy music D'Angelo tries to vocally flutter like Mariah and croon like Prince. With minimal success. It sounds bland and try hard rather than sexy. If I was of dating age in the mid 90s and the gentleman taking me back to his place drops the needle on D'Angel's Brown Sugar, I'd make an excuse to leave. Call me shallow and judgemental - I don't sleep with people who listen to boring music. Overall: 2/10 *Music is a topic I love to talk about. You have my attention if our tastes align, you stoke a passionate debate or you pique my curiosity about your playlists/collection. Never underestimate the power of melolagnia. If you're in luck, you might pick me up ;)

Awful. That’s all I have to say about that.

Does music come any more beige than this? So bland.

Every song is 4-6 minutes of the same two lyrics until you jam a screwdriver in your ear and scream about how you’ve done nothing to deserve this torture.

fy fan vilken dålig skit

I am sure this is a good record for the genre. But I just can’t get on board. Sure, it's peak 90's R'n'B but is that really saying much? For what it is, it's good. It's just that what it is isn't my thing. This is a genre I just don’t like. There are many genres where I can find something that's interesting. But unfortunately 90's R'n'B/soul I just find so dull. D'Angelo may be a very good singer, but he is also a boring one. No excitement, the same energy the whole way through. The songs are okay but they’re all of very similar tone and they also go on for a minute or two longer than necessary. This album could have been cut in half easily.

Too samey

What an awful album.

Get fucked. Tedious, at best

My god, this is so shit. An album of music to have disappointing sex to. I ended up listening to this on YouTube because I didn't want to fuck up my Spotify algorithm. Perhaps the worst album ever thought of, recorded, and produced (very badly).

There are probably some very good 90’s R&B albums. This is not one of them.

I understand that at the root of R&B, this album is the epitome of what sets apart the boys from the men. The silly little attempts at sounding sexy versus those who FUCK. This album is 90s soul above all other albums. D'Angelo is smooth, rich, and probably what your mom and dad put on to conceive you. But, frankly, I think it sucks. Now, is this just a situation where I think 90s R&B production is second worst only to late 80s pop rock? Maybe, but save for some jazzy (yet simple) bass lines this album offers nothing to me but sleep inducing ballads where D'Angelo spends a quarter of each song MAX coming up with lyrics that attempt to say something, anything, before devolving into repeating the same five to ten words for the last three to four minutes, which feels more realistically like an eternity. The instrumentation doesn't bother notably changing between any of the ten songs over the course of an hour, and whenever I wasn't groaning for the song to end, I'd instead tune into to find lyrics about sex, sex, I'm sexy, I stabbed my significant other to death, and sex, and I just had enough by the end. I completely and utterly believe D'Angelo is a sex machine who knows his way around a smooth track or two, but I just personally can't be bothered to care. If this is something you adore, whether it be for its hints of funk or for the sheer energy (or lack thereof) more power to you, but this is not for me.

This sucks right? Am I missing something? What am I meant to do with this?

His ability to sing makes this not nothing but not by much. I don't get it. The arrangements seem kind of weak.

Beige flour.

drowning in molten treacle

Dullest album, wimpiest voice.

That's over.

Really did not enjoy this one. The music felt so purposeless and each song just seemed to repeat the same idea monotonously throughout. Not for me

An entire album that grated on me. Shit. Damn. Motherfucker.

possibly the most egregious example of 90's rnb I've heard. Reminds me why I hated it so much during this time period. trying so hard to be "sexy" music. 1 .4

Entirely forgettable. This is a genre I just cannot get into. It all sounds exactly the same to me, but D’Angelo does have a good voice.

Not the music for me, of course it was made in Sacramento

Terrible

A dreary music genre is not going to be lifted by this example of its oeuvre. the first song drifts into a repetitive phrase, the second song drifts in with incoherency and I desperately want this to end. The third song barely makes an effort. Christ some of this is total rubbish. Randomly repeating words over dreadful substance free plinky plonking. Starts very badly and gets much much worse.

there's a track on this album called Shit, Damn, Motherfucker Shit - my review of this album Damn - I can't believe I listened to this album Motherfucker - D'Angelo I would also like to know what the fuck Jonz In My Bonz means - sounds painful

Hated it when it came out, still hate it not my cup of tea at all

Not for me

Sounded like the same song over and over. Can't understand why this should be listened to, other than as a warning of how bad R&B can be. Utter rubbish.

90's R&B... not for me

So, about song 2 my mind wondered. Song 3 (Jonz) I stopped paying attention. If I was attempting to get laid in my 20s, I could see throwing this one so I could feel the swagger and pray she was into it. However, just for a listen in my 40s feels…well, too “Shit. Damn.Motherfucker” for my tastes. I’ll pass.

Neo-soul/R&B/soul/funk/jazz = pretentious crap.

This sucks.

Not for me

Not really my kind of album. I can hear the quality in the musicianship and the smooth neo soul production, but it just does not connect with me in the way other genres do. The laid back grooves and mellow vibe never quite build into something that grabs my attention. If I had to pick a highlight, the opening track Brown Sugar is the most engaging. It sets the tone well and has a nice groove. Beyond that, much of the album blends together for me. Coming straight after listening to Meat Is Murder, this felt like a big tonal shift and perhaps a bit of a comedown. Completely different mood, different energy and not one that suits my taste as much. Favourite song: Brown Sugar Least favourite song: The overall sound feels too similar throughout Album artwork: Clean and understated, fitting the smooth tone of the record

What rubbish

Opening cut, BROWN SUGAR, boring and repetitive; don't want to hear his thoughts on having a menage a trois. Or his constant use of the word "Nigga." D'Angelo seems to find a groove, fit in a lyric, and put it on repeat for 5+ minutes per cut. While he's at it, he throws in as many "Ooooohs" as he can. Reminds me of Marvin Gaye, Curtis Mayfield, and Lonnie Liston Smith, all of whom I'd rather be listening to. I stopped listening in the middle of SHIT, DAMN, MOTHERFUCKER. This album would be much better without the vocals. ⭐ __________________________________ 🎧 LPs reviewed: 35 🎧 LPs left to review: 966 🎧 LPs I found great/relevant enough to be mandatory listens (5): 9 🎧 LPs I *might* include in my own list (4): 12 🎧 LPs I will certainly *not* include in mine (1-2): 10

The guy can sing but R&B doesn't do much for me. It has the same sound on many of the tracks and just reminds me why I don't like R&B.

Did not listen to much. Sorry, just not my thing.

This was just painful to try to get through all of the songs. Some of the least creative lyric writing I have had to endure, especially 'Jonz in my Bonz' and 'S,D,MF'. Stunned it would even make a top 10,000 album list.

Did not like it at all.

Just not the type of music I like.

Endless repetition, but some interesting soloing. Couldn't get past the 4th track.

as enjoyable as a prison sentence

Not for me. It was pretty boring and it seems like it doesn't have actual lyrics and instead it's just repeated phrases sung in fancy ways, which could be cool, but the background is too boring to hold my attention. 1.49/5

Hmmmm not hot

Not my type of sugar.

This was not for me the album just kinda lingered on and could not wait for the end. .5/5

I was not impressed by this at all. Every song had essentially the same beat and pretty much the same story of mumbly singing without much tone change. Nothing exciting or worth returning to. 1/5

Boring

I'm sorry, but I'm not able to be neutral in any way when rating rnb albums. DAngelo might be one of the greatest in the genre, but it's so physically painful to listen to it for me, that it's basically impossible. I survived 15 minutes in total, which is a nice achievement itself. Really not my type of music.

1.2 - I just hated it. Not saying it’s bad, just not for me at all.

Man this album just wasn’t it.

Not my vibe

3 songs in and I am bored to tears. Really quiet basic 4/4 beat. Nothing interesting at all about this album. This shouldn't have been included in the list. Found a decent part. There is a neat little guitar run in "Me and Those Dreamin' Eyes of Mine".

Not my thing

Oh dear, really, rather not.

Nope. Shite.

All the songs are the same

Just not my type of music

Peurile AND putrid.

Not my vibe

Brown Sugar drags on and doesn't really separate itself from loads who tried this genre and didn't stand out. Super dull, not interesting, somewhat offensive. 1/5.

I have probably only heard one or two complete songs from D'Angelo. I don't follow the kinds of entertainment that might include this music. My impression of D'Angelo is that he's more than content to be D'Angelo, but I don't like "I'm so cool" as a theme in any genre of music. Some of the music on thsi album is... okay..., but why would I ever want to listen to the content? I don't want to listen to a guy sing about how much he wants to get physical with the ladies. Bleh.

About as musically interesting as listening to a bubbling pot.
